from the President & CEO Dear Friends, Thank you for choosing to spend a beautiful evening with the RPO—our first Summer Season with Music Director Ward Stare! We have planned an exciting month that will take the RPO to Canandaigua, Geneseo, Pittsford, Penfield, Perinton, and several locations in the city of Rochester. In keeping with our mission to engage the widest possible audience, many concerts will be presented free of charge or with special children’s pricing, so bring the whole family! For a complete listing, visit rpo.org/summer. Just around the corner is our Magnifico! 2015-16 Opening Weekend in September, featuring Ward Stare conducting Respighi’s sonic showpiece Pines of Rome. See page 35 of this program book for full details on our opening events, and for the full 2015–16 lineup, visit rpo.org/subscribe. Over the past 92 years, the RPO has earned its place as one of America’s finest orchestras. But what truly sets the RPO apart is the depth and breadth of our community support, a tradition that continues today with an important Summer Challenge. Four families have stepped forward to create a challenge pool totaling $82,500 that will match, dollarfor-dollar, all gifts to the Annual Campaign received by August 31, the end of our fiscal year. We are grateful to Sunny and Nellie Rosenberg, Robin and Michael Weintraub, and two anonymous donors who have made these special gifts to encourage additional support for the RPO. Please consider making your own generous contribution, and double your dollars by calling us at (585) 454-7311, ext. 232, or giving online at rpo.org/summerchallenge.

from the Music Director Ladies and gentlemen—welcome to our Summer Season! Many only associate the RPO with performances in the historic Eastman Theatre, but this month we’re coming out of the concert hall for special performances throughout the Rochester region! There’s nothing like summertime in Rochester, and I’m absolutely delighted to be spending the season right here at home. Orchestras belong to their community, and we’re proud to be your hometown orchestra. One of my goals as music director is to find ways to make the orchestra more accessible to everyone in our great city. This year, we’ve planned a summer concert series that is casual, fun-filled entertainment for the whole family. Each concert will present a wide variety of favorites—from Star Wars and Indiana Jones to The Music Man and Carousel to Beethoven’s Fifth and the “Blue Danube” waltz (and, of course, a Sousa march or two!). Even if you’ve never been to the RPO, you’re bound to recognize music you know and love at these concerts! And, if you are on Twitter or Instagram, please post your photos with hashtag #RPOsummer. We look forward to seeing your posts and sharing them with the entire community to spread the word. Thank you for joining us and we look forward to seeing you again many times during our exciting 2015-16 season!

We wish you a pleasant summer!

Enjoy the show!

Bravo to retiring musicians

Flutist Jan Angus and Horn player Jennifer Burch will inspire the next generation of musicians

by Michelle Shippers For Jan Angus and Jennifer Burch, who are retiring from the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at the end of this season, retirement doesn’t mean saying goodbye to the music. “I’m not really retiring, I’m too busy,” said Jan Angus, who came to the RPO as third flute and piccolo in 1979. “I’m looking forward to having more time to focus on teaching. When I stop playing in the orchestra, I’ve thought about writing a book about my flute teaching methods.” Angus, a master’s graduate of the Eastman School of Music, has been balancing fulltime work at the Eastman Community Music School with playing in the orchestra. She is a senior instructor in flute at Eastman and also coordinator of the Eastman Pathways Program, a scholarship program for students in the Rochester City School District. She is collaborating with RPO second flute Joanna Bassett to bring flutists from all over the world to Washington, D.C., this August for the National Flute Association Convention. She also has taught at Hochstein School of Music and Dance and served on the faculties of Nazareth College, SUNY Geneseo, and SUNY Brockport. “I’ve never been one to promote myself,” said Angus, who has played flute since she was a child in California. “With time and experience comes maturity, and I have learned from my years in the orchestra that it’s not about you, it’s about the product.” In addition to teaching and playing recitals, Angus is looking forward to having more time to travel with her husband, RPO third

horn David Angus, and also spending time with their two grown children and grandson. Second horn player Jennifer Burch came to the RPO in 1992, direct from a seven-year appointment with the Richmond Symphony, where she played both third and principal positions. “I felt from the beginning that Rochester was my home,” said Burch, who grew up in Bath, New York, and graduated from the University of Michigan. “There is a tremendous amount of culture here.” Burch plans to continue teaching at the Eastman School of Music, where she is an assistant professor of horn. This summer, she will return to teach and perform at the MasterWorks Festival in Indiana. She also has taught at Nazareth College, Roberts Wesleyan College, and Hochstein. “I have really valued my years here at the RPO and nothing will fill that void,” said Burch, who spoke fondly of the camaraderie in her section. “I’ve had a wonderful career and I want to pass that on to others. I love seeing my students thrive.” In addition to teaching, Burch plans to get involved in volunteer and ministry work. She also is looking forward to spending more time with her husband, Bob Marshall, her three step-children and three grandchildren. Congratulations to Jan and Jennifer on your years with the RPO! Send your well-wishes to Jan Angus and Jennifer Burch on Twitter @RochesterPhil, #bravoJan or #bravoJennifer

Ward Stare Music Director

Our Music Director

Appointed the 12th music director of the RPO in July 2014, Ward Stare has been described as a “rising star in the conducting firmament” by the Chicago Tribune. His current season includes debuts with orchestras around the world, including performances with the Baltimore, Sydney, Pittsburgh, and New World symphonies, as well as the Calgary Philharmonic.

2014/15 Season

Stare’s frequent collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago began with his debut in 2012 conducting performances of Hansel and Gretel; he returned in 2013 to lead Die Fledermaus and again in November 2014 to lead Porgy and Bess. He led the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra and Chorus in 2013 for his Millennium Park debut at LOC’s annual “Stars of Lyric Opera” concert. Following his debut with the Opera Theater of St. Louis in 2013 conducting Il Tabarro and Pagliacci, Stare returned to OTSL the next season for performances of Dialogues of the Carmelites. He made his debut with the Washington National Opera conducting Donizetti’s comic opera L’elisir d’amore in 2014.

Halski Studio

Stare served as the resident conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2012. In 2009, he made his Carnegie Hall debut with the orchestra, stepping in at the last minute to lead H.K. Gruber’s Frankenstein!! The 2013-14 season saw his return to the Atlanta and Detroit symphony orchestras, as well as his debuts with the Syracuse Symphoria, the Jacksonville Symphony, and the Naples Philharmonic. Other recent engagements include the Houston, Québec, and Dallas symphonies, as well as numerous engagements with the Saint Louis Symphony. Stare was the recipient of both the Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize (2006) and the Aspen Conducting Prize (2007) at the Aspen Music Festival before spending the 2007-08 season as a League of American Orchestras Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Stare has studied conducting with David Zinman, János Fürst, and Jorma Panula, and worked with Michel Merlet in composition and musical analysis. Stare was trained as a trombonist at the Juilliard School in Manhattan. At 18, he was appointed principal trombonist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and has performed as an orchestral musician with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, among others. As a soloist, he has concertized in both the U.S. and Europe. For more information, visit wardstare.com

RPO musicians will travel 600 total miles this July to perform 11 community concerts, from downtown Rochester to the Adirondack region!

34 rpo.org / 585-454-2100

Twelve music directors have led the RPO, including Eugene Goossens, JosĂŠ Iturbi, Erich Leinsdorf, David Zinman, Christopher Seaman, and Ward Stare.

40 The RPO performs nearly 40 community engagement concerts every year, many of which are free to attend.

More than 13,000 kindergarten through sixth grade students in a nine-county area attended RPO educational concerts in the 2014-15 season, including every third and fifth grader in the Rochester City School District.

The RPO was founded in 1922 by George Eastman and performed its first concert on March 28, 1923.

He showed you that life should always

be set to music.

That’s why he’s one of the most important people on earth. How do you care for the most important people on earth? By giving them your absolute best. At St. Ann’s, we have built a brand new skilled nursing center in Webster that gives people more choices than ever before. From setting your own schedule, to enjoying small, friendly neighborhoods, to dining in cozy country kitchens—we make life what each resident wants it to be.

We have also created the area’s first freestanding transitional care center— the only rehab center in Rochester that is not located in a nursing home. So people can recover from major medical events surrounded by people just like themselves. It is a remarkable new way to care for people. Inspired by the people who deserve nothing less than the best. Learn more about the changes at St. Ann’s Community by visiting us at StAnnsCommunity.com.

RPYO CELEBRATES ITS 45th SEASON in 2015/16 The 100 middle and high school musicians of the RPYO will join together next fall for its 45th year as the region’s most enduring youth community instrumental ensemble. Our musicians come from nearly 30 schools in a seven-county region around Rochester. The musical talents of these students are nurtured by the highly dedicated music educators in these public and private schools and by over 65 private instrumental teachers. The RPYO celebrates the greater Rochester community that believes in the essential role of music and the arts in developing the creative minds and hearts of our youth.
