2014–15 Annual Report
Message from the Music Director
Greetings: It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed since I was named the RPO’s music director in July 2014. I’m extremely grateful to have been so warmly welcomed by this world-class orchestra, my colleagues Jeff Tyzik and Michael Butterman, this community, and our wonderful city which I’m proud to once again call home. The 2014−15 season featured many artistic accomplishments—from the success of the new nonsubscription concert series, to the first-ever season preview concert and our community summer concert series. These achievements are a great beginning as we pursue our shared passion of finding new ways to connect the RPO with diverse Rochester audiences. I look forward to going even further in the years to come as we work to give more members of our community the opportunity to experience our amazing orchestra live! In July 2015, the RPO traveled 600 total miles to perform more than 10 community concerts from downtown Rochester to the Adirondack region. Like our season preview concert in February, many of our summer concerts were free to attend. Altogether, the RPO presented nearly 40 community concerts, which included the Around the Town series; as well as RPO ensembles at Camp Good Days and Special Times, Wilmot Cancer Institute, and even the Rochester Regional Transit Center! We are proud to honor and advance George Eastman’s vision to make Rochester a community of listeners through this important work. I want everyone to be able to experience the thrill of live music, and our dynamic 2014-15 season was an example of how we are working towards that goal. None of what we do would be possible without the generosity of numerous corporate and individual sponsors and supporters, as well as local, state, and federal government support. On behalf of all of us at the RPO, I want to say thank you to these very important people for making such a profound difference in our lives and in the lives of the members of our community. I hope you enjoy reviewing our 2014-15 season highlights through this annual report, and I look forward to seeing you again very soon at an RPO concert. Thank you for your support of this fantastic orchestra! Most sincerely,
Ward Stare Music Director

Dear Friends of the RPO: In 2014−15, the RPO made gains to secure its place as a significant contributor to the cultural fabric of Rochester. It all began with our new Music Director Ward Stare. In September 2014, Maestro Stare led his first concerts as music director to rave reviews from both the orchestra and the community. Democrat and Chronicle classical music writer Daniel J. Kushner wrote that Stare “seemed to have an innate ability to cultivate an atmosphere that is both fully evocative and aesthetically generous, while remaining self-possessed and in control.” CITY Newspaper writer David Raymond wrote “[Stare’s] musical credentials are definitely there, and based on last night’s RPO season opener, the orchestra’s confidence in him is understandable.” As the excitement for a new era at the RPO continues to grow, we see record-breaking single ticket sales and total earned revenue growth for the first time since the 2010-11 season. While Ward’s appointment is clearly a factor in new and/or non-subscriber members of our community attending the RPO, our new independent, non-subscription concerts (such as Video Games LiveTM and Audra McDonald), also played a valuable role, generating single ticket revenue of more than $300,000 alone. In fiscal 2015 ending on August 31, while our financial results show an operating surplus of about $234,000, this is a result created by a series of one-time non-repeatable events. First, we received bequests in the amount of $817,000 that we could not have anticipated. Additionally, operating income increased by drawing supplemental funds in the amount of $850,000 from our unrestricted endowment fund. It is important to note that without these one-time events, we would have incurred a deficit of $1.433 million.
While the RPO continues to face many challenges on the road to fiscal stability, the start of the 2015-16 season shows additional signs of continued revenue growth. At the close of fiscal 2015, we are seeing Philharmonics, Pops, and Sunday Matinee Series subscription revenues trending to surpass final 2014-15 totals. Subscriber renewal rates among all series are also the highest since 2010-11. We attribute much of this success to the announcement of our new music director, and look forward to seeing Ward Stare’s continued success with the community and our world-class orchestra. 2015-16 marks the first full season which Ward programmed; artistic highlights include blockbuster guest artists like pianists Yuja Wang and Vadym Kholodenko, as well as more concerts highlighting RPO musicians, and the continuation of an independent concert series featuring Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy, a special taping of NPR’s From the Top, and an evening with pianist Jim Brickman. As we work toward a successful future, we want to thank you for your continued support of this organization. We could not do what we do without the support of this community which has sustained us for more than 90 years. However, we now look toward a future where the RPO is no longer merely sustained, but is thriving. We hope you will join hands with us as we work to ensure that the music is here for many more years to come.

A Year in the RPO 2014–15 Season Highlights SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER
The RPO’s 92nd season opened with a “fresh and distinctive” performance (City Newspaper) for Ward Stare’s first concerts as music director. The program featured Tchaikovsky’s fiery Fourth Symphony, as well as a performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto by international superstar Midori (1). Also in September, the Pops Series opened with Jeff Tyzik’s ode to Broadway’s Golden Age, featuring Broadway vocalists Lisa Vroman and Doug LaBrecque (2). Stare returned to the RPO in October, following-up on opening weekend buzz with a program featuring the music of Berlioz and Saint-Saëns, plus pianist Jeremy Denk (3) performing Beethoven’s first concerto.
NOVEMBER
As part of the Orchestra’s renewed commitment to engage all members of the community, the RPO’s 2014−15 season included several special concerts designed to draw new audiences, starting with Video Games Live™ in November (4 & 5). The Strong National Museum of Play’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games served as concert partner, moderating a talkback panel following the concert which featured symphonic soundtracks from hit video games paired with HD video.

DECEMBER
Handel’s Messiah returned to the RPO’s holiday programming, with guest conductor James Feddeck (6), talented soloists, and the Rochester Oratorio Society, directed by Eric Townell. The RPO’s OrKIDStra Series celebrated the season with a musical reading of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas and a special screening of The Snowman, with live vocals by the Genesee Valley Children’s Choir (7).
JANUARY
Composer Lawrence Siegel (8) joined the RPO to present Kaddish – I am Here, which draws its text from interviews with Holocaust survivors. The performance coincided with the 70th anniversary of the liberation of World War II concentration camps. The RPO partnered with the Jewish Federation of Rochester to invite local survivors to the concert, as well as organizing historical images for display outside of Kodak Hall. The RPO’s education department also arranged two community “lunchand-learn” events as well as school visits with the composer. Six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald (9) brought her “amazing voice” (Democrat and Chronicle) to Rochester for the first time; later Jeff Tyzik debuted a new show that paid tribute to the art of the tango, featuring music by Latin composers paired with professional dancers, vocalist Malena Dayen, and renowned Argentinean bandoneonist Héctor del Curto (10). RPO Facebook fan Jean Green called the performance “the concert of a lifetime!”

FEBRUARY
Music Director Ward Stare (1) served as emcee and conductor for the Orchestra’s first-ever season announcement concert, taking questions live from the audience via social media and leading the RPO in musical previews of what’s to come in the 2015−16 season. Opera returned to Kodak Hall in a semi-staged concert production of Verdi’s La Traviata, led by Ward Stare and featuring soprano Anya Matanovič (2) among the guest soloists, as Violetta, as well as vocalists from the Eastman School of Music and the Rochester Oratorio Society.
MARCH
Parisian conductor Fabien Gabel (3) returned to the RPO on the Sunday Matinee Series, interpreting music from Molière’s comedic play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme as it would have been performed in the court of King Louis XIV and how Richard Strauss reimagined the work 200 years later. Classical and contemporary dance intertwined as Rochester City Ballet (4) and FuturPointe Dance (5) joined the RPO for “A Night of Dance,” conducted by Daniel Meyer and featuring Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings (with George Balanchine’s original choreography) alongside La Création du monde by 20th century composer Darius Milhaud.

Education and community engagement have been at the core of the RPO’s mission since its founding in 1922. In 2000, the orchestra named Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach—the first endowed position of its kind in the country. In the 2013−14 season, Michael Butterman’s title was changed to Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement to reflect the Orchestra’s renewed commitment to more deeply engage people from all backgrounds and all walks of life in our community.
More than 2,500 children ages three to six saw the RPO free of charge in their own neighborhoods through traveling Tiny Tots concerts.

orKIDStra: These Sunday afternoon concerts held at Performance Hall at Hochstein are designed for kids and their families. The 2014−15 season began with the music of beloved superheroes and heroines; the Genesee Valley Children’s Choir joined the RPO for two special holiday showings of The Snowman; youngsters learned about the different instruments of the orchestra in Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and Peter and the Wolf; and the season concluded with a musical ode to two stories by Dr. Seuss.
2
Tiny Tots Concerts: These 40-minute concerts for
preschoolers and kindergarteners are presented at schools, houses of worship, and other public venues. In Building Community in May 2015, guest conductor Robert Franz introduced children to the instrumental families of the orchestra, as well as some basic musical concepts.

Primary Concerts: This series provides live orchestral performances in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre for firstthrough third-grade students in the Rochester City School District and surrounding areas. In February 2015, students enjoyed interacting with the orchestra in a musical retelling of Rumpelstiltskin, featuring original music by guest conductor and composer Grant Cooper.
Intermediate Concerts: These concerts in Kodak
Hall for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders are designed to tie music to school curriculum. Students submitted poems and artwork inspired by the works of American composers prior to the concert, which were projected on the big screen. A special video camera mounted on the piano allowed students to get an up-close look at guest pianist Reed Tetzloff’s performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra: This 100-member symphony orchestra, founded in 1970, is composed of advanced-level student musicians in grades eight through twelve who live in seven counties in the greater Rochester region and represent 27 schools, plus home-schooled students. During the 2014−15 season, the RPYO conducted a search for a new music director to succeed David Harman, who retired in 2014 after 21 years of service. In July 2015, the RPYO named James Mick, assistant professor of music education at Ithaca College, as its fourth music director in a 45-year history! 5

Prior to the Rochester debut of KADDISH − I AM HERE in January 2015, the RPO teamed up with the JCC of Greater Rochester and Nazareth College to host two free “lunch-and-learn” events with composer Lawrence Siegel. Siegel also gave a presentation to students at School of the Arts. At these engagements, Siegel talked about creating Kaddish, which draws its libretto from interviews with Holocaust survivors, and followed with a question-and-answer session. The RPO’s presentation of Kaddish coincided with the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The RPO also partnered with the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester to invite all area Holocaust survivors and their families to attend the performance as honored guests.
