Welcome to the 16–17 Season! I am proud to present a dynamic array of programs spanning a wide range of genres, styles, and tastes this season. The RPO is joined by an impressive lineup of soloists you won’t want to miss and, as always, our world-class orchestra will perform some of the greatest masterpieces in the symphonic canon. Ever since George Eastman put Rochester on the map as a destination for the world’s most talented musicians and composers, our city has championed American music. We will celebrate this rich history by performing American works throughout the Philharmonics Series and presenting an American Music Festival spanning three weekends in the fall. From Ives to Gershwin, Bernstein, Adams, and beyond, you’ll experience firsthand how the RPO brings its special brand of zeal to the ‘American Sound.’ There are two highlights of the season that I’m especially excited about. I am pleased to bring opera back to our series with the iconic La Bohème in a semi-staged concert version which promises to delight and amaze. In December, we welcome the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma back to Rochester for a special one night only performance! Our resolve has never been stronger in our mission to share great musical moments with every member of our community. Under Jeff Tyzik’s leadership, our Pops Series is more vibrant and entertaining than ever before. Michael Butterman’s OrKIDStra Series continues to thrive and engage the next generation of music lovers, and the Sunday Matinee Series will once again charm you in a more intimate setting to complement the grandeur of Kodak Hall. I look forward to continuing to deepen my relationship with this great orchestra and with our beloved community through the power of live music. After his opera, Lady Macbeth, is denounced as “anti-Soviet,” Shostakovich’s fate rides on the success of his next composition. The ensuing Fifth Symphony is a paragon of music’s power to express beyond the notes, at once brutal, mournful, and triumphant—with a side of sarcasm. It’s paired with the world concert premiere of Soviet-inspired industrial waltzes and the RPO debut of opera star and Eastman graduate Nicole Cabell.

Its intricate textures are mirrored by Hovhaness’ Fugue and Stravinsky’s self-proclaimed “War Symphony,” a razor-edged reflection of the atrocities of the age. BRAHMS/BRIGHT SHENG Intermezzo Op. 118, No. 2, “Black Swan” CHOPIN Piano Concerto No. 2 BRAHMS Symphony No. 1 It was a creation nearly 20 years in the making, but when Brahms unleashed his symphonic powers at long last, it was with a mighty roar that both invoked the past and heralded the future. Chopin is synonymous with piano fireworks, and his second concerto is in good hands with Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter, a noted Chopin interpreter.
