This Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is an emotional powerhouse, a captivating and hopeful story of a family coming to terms with its past and bravely facing its future.

A delightful comedy about life, love, literature and the side-splitting results when friends start reading between the lines.

A Jewish Confederate soldier returns to his plantation, abandoned except for two of the family’s former slaves: both raised in Judaism. The three men negotiate their new relationship, and celebrate newfound freedom during Passover.

An enchanting celebration of love, innocence and imagination for the entire family! Weaving three stories of love, magic and perception, Shakespeare’s most popular comedy has been an audience favorite for centuries.

Letter from the PUBLISHERS “Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.”– Hamilton Wright Mabie As the year comes to a close, and the holidays are upon us, we take the time to reflect on all that has happened in the past 12 months. It has been an interesting year to say the least. We’ve had the chance to meet many wonderful, amazing and inspiring local women as we continue to produce this publication each month. We are constantly reminded of the caliber of women in our community and it is our pleasure to be able to bring their stories to you, our readers.

This year we also produced our first RWMs Ultimate Women’s Expo. This huge undertaking was an incredible success, thanks in no small part to the generous support we received from all of our vendors, sponsors and you our readers who came out to attend the event. We are already planning next year’s expo, and it promises to be even bigger and better than our first! In this bonus issue of Rochester Woman Magazine, our advertisers have some great last minute gift ideas for everyone on your list. As we enter this holiday shopping season, let’s all use the opportunity to shop local and support the home-town merchants that make our local economy grow. Read this month’s Fashion Forward on page [12] to see how keeping our dollars local is good for our economy. As a special treat, we asked some or our former cover women to share with us their favorite holiday recipes. Look on page [32] for delicious suggestions from Donna Dee Dee, Robin De Wind and Kristin Elliott. We don’t know about you, but Robin’s Rum Cake is looking pretty scrumptious for holiday entertaining! It’s been a year of change and great progress at Rochester Woman Magazine, with a few lessons learned along the way. We hope you like how the magazine has evolved over the past three years and hope you continue reading to look for even more exciting things in the coming months. As we move into year number four, we have a few surprises still left up our sleeve. We’ve got great plans for the future success of RWM and we hope you will continue to join us for the ride. From everyone at Rochester Woman Magazine, have a wonderful holiday season and a terrific New Year. Where we opt to do our shopping will speak volumes about where our loyalties lie. You might consider, if you have not already done so, supporting your local economy by doing your holiday shopping this season at your community retailers; shop small business. Entrepreneurship is one of the unique attributes that stand out to make our nation great and we should all have a hand in fueling that system. It’s fairly easy to head to the mall, browse the national chain stores and gather all that you need from one location. It’s even easier to sit the comfort of your home and get all of your shopping done with the click of a mouse. However, the memories that can be gained from searching for the perfect gift for a loved one at quaint local businesses are virtually priceless. You can often find items at a local retailer that you simply can’t find anywhere else-making the giftgiving experience all the more worthwhile. Last year, online purchases accounted for the highest percentage of Thanksgiving weekends’ sales. Online shopping is great for convenience, but it doesn’t support the small business owners of the Greater Rochester area that are working diligently everyday to fill a niche or service and advocate for their values. Buying local also gives consumers an opportunity to boost sustainability-always a plus in an environmentally conscious society. 2012 Holiday Spending Forecast

“In all the years, this is the most challenging year doing a forecast,” said Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation based in Washington, D.C. “There are so many uncertainties.” 58% of consumers are more confident about the economy now that the election is over. 38% say their buying habits will change this holiday season. Coupons, specialized Facebook offers and flash mob sales are some of the top shopping deals that are expected to be utilized. Consumers are still doing their research with the aid of buyer reviews, social media, celebrity endorsement and email blasts. Electronics, media-based products and clothing maintain their appeal as the most sought-after items for holiday spending. Predicting Holiday Spending Is Never Easy.

Take last year’s revenue for example. Overall sales were strong, but sales don’t tell the whole story. Retailers’ profits were eroded because they had to authorize an overwhelming amount of discounting to get shoppers to spend at all-particularly during the weeks just before Christmas.

Top 3 Reasons To Shop Local: 1. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy - Compared to chain stores,

locally-owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community. Small businesses also make better use of already standing public infrastructures and services. Everyone in the neighborhood wins!

2. Jobs and Wages - Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally

and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.

3. Local Character and Prosperity - In an increasingly homogenized world, communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character have an economic advantage and unique tourist appeal. Everyone hates to see their local Mom-and-Pop stores be forced out of business; consider every dollar you spend as a ballot cast in favor of these smaller, community-boosting retailers. It is also interesting to note that local businesses typically are the first ones to donate back into non-profits-making every purchase truly count for a greater good!

Small Business Saturday, set for November 24, suitably falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday and serves as the traditional kick -off to the holiday shopping season for independent retailers and restaurateurs. The day was created in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: more customers! “In just three years, Small Business Saturday went from an idea to help small business find more customers, to a permanent fixture on the holiday shopping calendar,” said Susan Sobbott, president, American Express OPEN. “According to the research, we are seeing the small business community take ownership of the day and make it their own.” Why Not Keep A Good Thing Going?

Get out and buy local this season-it’s certainly not a far drive to Main Street (yet another perk!). Park your car and enjoy perusing the Christmas window displays on foot; be proud of what your little town has to offer. As Michael Shuman said, author of Going Local, “Local ownership boosts local loyalty. It means that such difficult-to-quantify factors as community stability, cultural preservation, and civic pride enters business decisions along with traditional measures of profitability. And it gives the community a chance, even in an increasingly powerful global economy, to regain control over its own destiny.” Joan E. Lincoln owns Panache Vintage & Finer Consignment, Inc. at 1855 Monroe Avenue in Brighton Commons, www.joanlincoln.com

::gift giving for the ages We’ve all said it while Christmas shopping for Mom or Dad: “What do you give someone who has everything?” So we asked St. Ann’s Community, a senior housing and health care continuum, to give us the inside scoop on what to wrap this year. Gifts From the Heart

“What many parents want most is simply to be with their children or celebrate those relationships,” said St. Ann’s President and CEO, Betty Mullin-DiProsa. • “My favorite gifts are pictures of my daughters or pictures of us together,” Betty said. “Those are things that last and have meaning.” Put them in a beautiful frame and you have a wonderful present.

• Create a task list of projects that need to be completed around the home (i.e. raking leaves, organizing the basement), and have each family member sign up to fulfill at least one task. • Install an emergency response system in your parent’s home. If your mom or dad needs immediate assistance, they can just push the button on their wristband or pendant. An operator will then speak with your loved one via a two-way intercom, and call a neighbor, you or emergency help as needed.

• You can also create opportunities to spend time together. Take your parents out to their favorite restaurant and indulge in meaningful conversation. Or invite them to your home for a quaint meal followed by a showing of old home movies.

Other Ideas

• Pamper your parents: take Mom for a mother/daughter mani-pedi and treat Dad to a professional sporting event.

• Give a gift certificate to their favorite salon.

• In the weeks leading up to Christmas, get together with a parent and ask questions about childhood, marriage and life in general. Take notes and begin a journal of personal and family stories that will leave a legacy. The conversations and writings will be gifts to both of you. Presents that Serve

“It’s also thoughtful to consider what would either pamper your parents by relieving a task or give a needed hand,” said Betty. • Install a remote car starter in your parent’s vehicle. These devices are loved by people of all ages, but are especially helpful for those who become cold easily or have difficulty scraping icy windows. • Gift a cleaning service for a certain number of hours, or a companion service that can also provide light cooking and laundry. • Hire a snowplow service for the winter.

22

• For parents who are independent and would like some company, a pet may be the solution. A small dog or cat can provide friendship throughout the day.

december 2012 :: rochesterWomanMag.com

• Now that television shows can be purchased on DVD, your loved ones can unwrap hours of viewing pleasure. Perhaps “Gilligan’s Island” or “I Love Lucy” would fit nicely under the tree. • Because family pictures are so loved, digital photo frames are a big hit with parents and grandparents. • An active adult might really enjoy the health, wellness and socialization that a YMCA or senior exercise class can provide. Ask whether the facility has a pool—swimming is very popular because it is easier on joints. (Before beginning any exercise, your loved one should talk with his doctor.) • If falls are a concern, a cordless phone, night lights, no-skid socks or slippers, and non-slip bathtub tread can be helpful. • For those who have trouble with sight, a large universal remote, books on CD and touch clocks that announce the time can be useful. “Think about what your parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle would like— what they could use—and you won’t go wrong. But remember,” Betty reiterated, “what they find most important is the special gift of you and your company.”

::the gift of giving

By Mia Trovato

A few months ago we were asked to publish the grand prize winner of a short story contest co-sponsored by the Fairport Public Library and Healing Rescue Dogs. The contest was open to elementary school kids who had pets that they had adopted from any of the local animal shelters or adoption groups in Monroe County. As a special Holiday treat, we are pleased to celebrate the grand prize winner Mia Trovato and to share the story she wrote with all of you.

This is the story of how Devo, my German Shepherd dog (or G.S.D.) came into my life. Devo was born in a warehouse in New Jersey. The people who had the puppy didn’t want the puppys – so they starved them. The parents were both guard dogs. The pups didn’t get enough of what they needed. Devo was rescued by an organization called “Big Dogs, Big Hearts”. He was put into foster care. “Big Dogs, Big Hearts” found cardboard, plaster, and metal in the pups poop. Then I came along. Suddenly, Devo’s life changed. My mom and dad took me to a pet store where the organization had the dogs for adoption. Then I saw him. I went over to him and asked if I could say hello. Soon, I was not leaving his side! I took him to the tiny space of grass between the parking lot and the building and back. My mom and dad looked into him and learned about his awful beginning. I remember saying, “We are not leaving here without him.” So true! The next day Devo came to my house. My family and his fosters talked. I asked, “Can we keep him?” and they said , “Yes.” It was decided that we would get him forever the next day. You may have heard of dog nicknames. Well, Devo has TOO many! There are: egg-lifter, pita-puller, poochie puppy, woony-wuppy-wo-wo, wuppy puppy, little handsome pooch, floopy-eared-big-boy (which died out long ago, as he has big, straight, high ears now), baloneybrain, Devo-bandito, and big ears. Devo does “sit”, “down”, “stand”, “wait”, “rest”, “pool”, “car”, “door”, “shoosh”, “swim”, “touch”, “paw”, “come”, “watch”, “heel” and “with-me”. The other command is “find”. Devo goes, finds his treat-filled whatever you want him to find, and he brings the whole thing with you (with the treat). You say “show” when he finds it and he puts it in your hand before eating it! Devo has many friends. He goes to the dog park early each morning and plays. He plays with many other friends; he even has a best friend, a Great Dane! Devo is a great dog – he gives me nothing but love.

Feeling all warm and fuzzy and filled with the holiday spirit? Good, because it’s time to open your home up to those in your heart!

and stunning.

We sat down with local business woman Ann Marie Stonecypher, to find out what makes a holiday gathering both memorable

First, why is it important to Ann Marie to host a get-together outside of a traditional holiday family meal? “People who moved here from other places become our close friends and in turn, they become our family,” she said. “It’s just as important to get together with them as our biological families.” Ann Marie says it’s important to carve out special time just for them around the holidays. While having a special homemade meal is a favorite among many, Ann Marie says it’s the opportunity to chat and catch up with friends and family that gets her excited for the holidays. “The food is wonderful but I really love gathering with family,” she said. What’s On The Table For A Gathering Of Friends? Food & Drinks: “I am not a cook but I do have a favorite cookie

that I love to eat that my dad and my Aunt Carole make. It is Italian chocolate roll up cookies,” Ann Marie said. “I don’t know how to make them but they always make extras just for me.” When Ann Marie is hosting a party or holiday dinner she loves her three-tiered plate holder. “I can put hors d’oeuvres, sweets, or whatever I like on it. I can decorate it and use it as the centerpiece of a beautifully appointed buffet table.” Besides holding food, it’s also functional because it uses vertical space on the table. “I have different heights [on the table] and they help create a gorgeous tablescape.” Also, Ann Marie suggests hosts and hostesses be mindful of guests’ diet restrictions (gluten-free, vegetarian, dairy allergies, etc.), as well as providing both a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Besides, Ann Marie sticks to cranberry juice because she’d “rather splurge with a plate of delicious pie, instead of drinking those precious calories!”

Décor: Looking for some unique but free ideas for decorating that

“I have pine trees in my yard,” said Ann Marie, and that’s just about all you need! Ann Marie cuts small pieces of pine from her yard and tucks them into places throughout the room. She then adds gold ornaments (that’s her choice ornament color, you may explore as your heart wishes!) or nutcrackers to the pine décor. “It’s fragrant and cheap!” Ann Marie says they make perfect additions to regular everyday candlesticks and to all areas of a mantle or table. “It’s a great way to incorporate the holidays with your everyday home décor.” As well, the aforementioned three-tiered plate holder comes back into play. Heights and varied levels are really important, according Ann Marie. “Height on a table makes it dramatic.” For a big fancy affair, place boxes underneath the tablecloth to create dimension and different places for plates and platters to rest. Also this creates more space on a table or mantle because working with vertical space too. Once she has her desired levels, Ann Marie adds ribbons, sprigs of flowers, festive candy, ornaments and pine to the table. What Matters Most

“My best [party] memories are who I spend it with,” Ann Marie said. “Sometimes you spend so much time making it pretty and planning, but the best parts are the laughter and the people who spent time with you.” That’s what she remembers, and what her guests reminisce about — the great conversation and unforgettable moments, not just the great things you ate and drank and the pretty décor. Holiday Party Ideas

* Make it a themed party. The holiday season is filled with festivities, from office parties to neighborhood gatherings to gatherings with family. For more formal affairs, designate the colors for the party and encourage people to don those hues at the party. * Prearrange transportation home for guests. A successful holiday party is one that is safe, so be sure to prearrange travel home for guests just in case anyone overindulges in holiday cheer. When sending out invitations, seek volunteers to be designated drivers, and avoid drinking alcohol yourself. For larger parties, call a local taxi service and arrange for a couple of cabs to be on call when the party ends.

::rwm holiday recipes It’s the time of year for celebration with family and friends. One of the best parts of any Holiday is of course the food! Everyone has their own favorite Holiday traditions so we asked several of our former cover women to share with us their favorite Holiday recipes or memories. Enjoy!

I am sure there are variations on this recipe, but it is still a favorite. My family asks me to bring it to every gathering! Mary Jane (Mann) was like a grandmother to me. She lived across the street from my present home and both her family and my husband’s family (back several generations) bought the farm together. Deeply spiritual, Mary Jane taught me piano, how to knit, when to plant “the seeds”, and how to be a most gracious hostess. At every potluck dinner Mary Jane would bring her corn bread pudding. She had a grace about her that, even today, I try and emulate while entertaining. When things get hectic, I like to think of her. She passed away in 2011. I guess I am the corn bread pudding matriarch now.

Italian Arancini became one of my children’s favorite holiday recipes after we would go to the home of our dear family friends Bill and Arline Liberti every year for what was nothing short of a spectacular Christmas-time feast. Mr. Liberti was a professional chef, and my daughter especially would love to watch him as he prepared every step of our five-course meal. Arancini — or rice balls — were the favorite appetizer. After eating those, how did we ever have room for the rest of the meal! And, even though Mr. Liberti has passed away—his memory lives on every Christmas when I make a valiant attempt (although never quite up to his standards!) to replicate “Arancini al Liberti”!

Arancini Original Recipe Makes 18 Rice Balls

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 cup uncooked Arborio rice 1/2 cup dry white wine 2 1/2 cups boiling chicken stock 2 ounces finely chopped ham Salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1egg, beaten 1egg 1 tablespoon milk 4 ounces mozzarella cheese, cut into 3/4 inch cubes

Glaze: 1/4 cup Rum

1/4 water 1 cup sugar 1 stick of butter Simmer for several minutes then pour over cake and let it absorb. Add whip cream and nuts as garnishes.

1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup dry bread crumbs 1 cup vegetable oil for deep frying Directions

1.Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic, and cook, stirring until onion is soft but not browned. Pour in the rice, and cook stirring for 2 minutes, then stir in the wine, and continue cooking and stirring until the liquid has evaporated. Add hot chicken stock to the rice 1/3 cup at a time, stirring and cooking until the liquid has evaporated before adding more. 2.When the chicken stock has all been added, and the liquid has evaporated, stir in the peas and ham. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat, and stir in the Parmesan cheese. Transfer the risotto to a bowl, and allow to cool slightly. 3.Stir the beaten egg into the risotto. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining egg and milk with a fork. For each ball, roll 2 tablespoons of the risotto into a ball. Press a piece of the mozzarella cheese into the center, and roll to enclose. Coat lightly with flour, dip into the milk mixture, then roll in bread crumbs to coat. 4.Heat oil for frying in a deep-fryer or large deep saucepan to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Fry the balls in small batches until evenly golden, turning as needed. Drain on paper towels. Keep warm in a low oven while the rest are frying.
