JEANINE E. GANGENESS PhD, RN, Associate Vice President – Rochester, Academic Affairs, Dean for School of Graduate Studies 400 S Broadway, Suite 300, Rochester, MN 55904 507-535-2530

Jeanine Gangeness jokingly refers to herself as the “WSU Rochester Roadie,” but in fact, she is the Winona State University-Rochester (WSU-R) Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean for the School of Graduate Studies responsible for leading the campus. “I work with the team to develop planning documents for marketing, recruitment, enrollment, graduate programs, student services, finance and facilities,” Jeanine explains. “Through intense engagement of staff, we work together to improve local culture, increase graduate enrollment, and develop strategy for branch campus sustainability.” This year, WSU-R is offering three new graduate programs, a Master of Science in Athletic Training, a Master of Social Work, and a new Education Doctorate program. “We are really excited about the launch of these new programs in the greater Rochester community,” Jeanine explains. WSU-R also has 12 undergraduate transfer programs and over 20 high-caliber graduate programs. Annually, WSU-R serves the higher education needs of over 800 undergraduate and 450 graduate students in Rochester. Jeanine describes the WSU-Rochester culture as supportive and respectful, while honoring the variety of life experiences that bring people to the institution. Jeanine describes, “We work together to ensure our students are able to take advantage of our higher education opportunities and achieve their career dreams. This is the promise I made when I came to Rochester, and it’s been easy to keep!” What led Jeanine to a career in higher education? “The dream and the promise,” she states. “I believe higher education is the best equalizer for achieving life goals. Everyone should have an opportunity to achieve their dreams, and higher education is the best way to realize a better career, exposure to new thinking, and a life of your choosing.” WSU-R has been providing education to Rochester for over 100 years. Jeanine believes the institution provides opportunities to every student by empowering them to take the next step in their life. “That’s what makes this job so amazing,” she opines, “I’m creating an atmosphere and space for the superstars to work!” For more information about WSU-R’s new graduate programs, please contact their Recruitment and Admissions Advisor, Sammie Eckerson: sdeckerson@winona.edu

Posh Facial Esthetics Just a few years ago, Stephanie Kriener, RN BSN was working at Mayo Clinic in the Cardiac ICU unit. With over 20 years of experience in nursing, and a passion for all things beautiful, Stephanie decided to embark on a career of esthetics. In California, she trained with leading experts in the esthetic field and received her certification in Dermal Fillers and Botox. Back home in Minnesota, she began establishing herself in the esthetic community. Small is better, she thought. Stephanie started building her client base by injecting at different clinics and parties. Soon, her desire blossomed into something bigger. Officially opening in 2014, Stephanie now runs her own skincare clinic medically directed by renowned Dr. Christopher Balgobin. Posh Facial Esthetics is located in southeast Rochester at Shoppes on Maine, a quiet part of the ever-busy town. Parking is easy, you’ll always find a spot right in front of their storefront and when you walk in, you’ll always be greeted by a smiling face. Posh is made up of Stephanie, the nurse injector, an esthetician with over 20 years of skincare experience and front desk staff. After serving the women and men of Rochester for 4 years, Stephanie’s dreams continue to grow, as she announced in January of 2018 that Posh Facial Esthetics will be expanding. The specialty and focus of Posh are treatments that involve the face. They offer a variety of treatments that help clients with concerns such as anti-aging, acne, discoloration and more. Some of their services include Botox, Dermal Fillers, chemical peels, microderms, Laser Hair Reduction, micro-needling and much more! With the oncoming expansion, Posh plans on offering new services as well. One of them being a procedure called Ultherapy, this service is brand new to Posh and the Rochester area. Ultherapy is a non-invasive procedure that lifts and tightens your neck, chin, brow and improves fine lines and wrinkles on the chest. Posh has a dedicated team where customer care is their number one priority. Posh has an Esthetician and advanced Ultherapist named Chelsey Smith to perform all Ultherapy procedures. They offer complimentary consultations for clients who have questions on the services they offer and provide treatment plans. They also offer medical grade skincare lines that compliment their services nicely. In the ever-changing esthetic industry, Posh Facial Esthetics strives to bring the latest technology and techniques to their clients. Staff members never stop learning and professionally developing as they regularly attend seminars, trainings and continuing education courses. Posh Facial Esthetics would like to give a huge thank you to all that have supported them throughout the years. WHERE YOU ARE PLANTED With this March/April 2019 issue of RochesterWomen magazine, we enter our 20th year and the 12th annual RochesterWomen's Business & Resource Directory featuring 25 women on the cover, but who’s counting? We are all thrilled we made it through the harsh winter, and it is finally springtime. In January, more than 20 women attended our Achieve 2019 event at Forager Brewery. We are hosting a private Facebook group for women who want to reach their goals this year. We invite you to be part of the private group (Rochester Women Magazine Achievers Group). In June, RochesterWomen magazine will host a follow-up gathering at Forager Brewery. Watch for more information in RochesterWomen magazine May/June 2019 issue and on Facebook. If women were flowers, I’d pick each of the women to be on the cover of Rochester Women's Business & Resource Directory 2019. Women leaders from an array of sectors – beauty, coaching, health care, law and leisure – adorn our cover. They each have an advertorial (mini article) about them in this issue along with a Business Listing (pages 15-17), so that you can reach out for more information. We are proud to provide more than five pages of updated Resource (nonprofit) Listings. In this issue of RochesterWomen magazine, we feature Pam Mensik, a woman with passion and purpose (page 10). Next, you will find out what a personal coach can do for you and what types of coaches are available (page 12). Then, get to know more about Olmsted Medical Center’s microneedling services (page 19) and local medispas who bring advanced beauty services to our community (page 21). When you read about Asian-American cuisine and sake (pages 24-25 and 27), you’ll want to grab a pair of chopsticks. Check out some of Rochester’s Asian restaurants this spring or try making the spring rolls recipe yourself. In collaboration with LuAnn Buechler, RochesterWomen magazine will be hosting a Mother <-> Daughter Experience Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, 2019 at Assisi Heights Spiritualty Center. Our keynote speaker Friday evening is Allison Loftus, owner of Flourish Consulting, dedicated to meeting the mental health needs of women and teen girls. This great bonding experience for mothers and daughters will be right here in Rochester, so you can go back to your own home or stay overnight at Assisi Heights. See pages 54 and 55 for more information about the event. You are beautiful, confident and worthy!

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL

beyond Self-esteem KNOW YOUR WORTH BY TERRI ALLRED

THERE ARE CERTAIN WORDS AND CONCEPTS THAT ARE SO OVERUSED IN OUR CULTURE THAT THEY END UP MEANING EVERYTHING AND NOTHING AT ALL.

Self-esteem is one such concept. Poor self-esteem is thought to be the cause of everything from childhood behavioral problems to adult interpersonal difficulties. Esteem for oneself is surely a contributing factor for a host of issues; however, many researchers are beginning to question the concept of self-esteem and the importance of it in successful adult identity and relationship formation. Instead, the idea of self-worth is emerging as a more helpful concept for explaining the sense of value in self and relationships that is so often missing in people’s lives. SELF-ESTEEM Self-esteem is considered a person’s sense of their own value or worth. It is basically one’s attitude about oneself, whether positive or negative. This sense of self-value is formed by a complex interweaving of factors including genetics, personality, life experiences, age, health, thoughts, social circumstances, the reaction of others to us and comparing ourselves to others. Self-esteem fluctuates throughout one’s life and can be influenced heavily by interactions with others with whom we are in relationships. A sense of poor self-esteem can result in a lack of value for oneself. People with poor self-esteem are often found sacrificing their own needs or seeking self-worth in relationship to others, even if that relationship isn’t healthy or mutual. They may continually compare themselves to others rather than celebrate their own accomplishments. They may claim success was a result of good luck rather than acknowledging the work that went into a project

or endeavor. They may repeatedly apologize for things that aren’t in their control or their responsibility.

SELF-WORTH Self-worth is a concept that has emerged from the understanding that self-esteem doesn’t capture the innateness of our value as humans independent of our achievements or relationships. “Self-worth is the more global recognition that we are valuable human beings worthy of love,” shares psychologist Christina Hibbert. She further explains that self-worth is “a deep knowing that I am of value, I am loveable, necessary to this life and of incomprehensible worth.” To illustrate the concept of self-worth, Hibbert shares a story about being on a field trip with a group of 5-year olds to an art museum. When the docent asked the children to raise their hands if they were an artist, all the children raised their hands. Self-worth is akin to that childlike sense of who we are; our value and potential just for being a unique person.

YOU ARE VALUABLE How do we uncover and experience that innate sense of self-worth, without the external trappings of familial, social and community expectations and judgements? Begin the practice of identifying and acknowledging your own self-worth: 1. Assess how you currently feel about yourself. What do you value or appreciate about yourself? What are the accomplishments of which you are most proud? What are your strengths? If you need help getting started, ask a trusted friend to share. Sometimes friends can help us see our true selves in a way that isn’t marred by our own judgements. Reflect upon and acknowledge all your perceived imperfections, self-judgements, selfrecriminations and disappointments. 2. Take a moment to ponder how you feel about a loved one. Do you love that person unconditionally? Why? Is there any blemish, misstep or condition under which you wouldn’t love them? For most of us, we understand unconditional love toward another. What if we allowed that same unconditional love for ourselves? Take a moment to go through your list of perceived imperfections and feel the same level of selfacceptance and compassion that you would offer your loved one. PAM MENSIK

A WOMAN WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE BY ERIN PAGEL

PASSIONATE: THAT’S PAM MENSINK. She is passionate about her family. Her face beams and her eyes light up when she speaks of her grandchildren. Mensink is passionate about the Rochester community. She is a member of the Sunrisers Kiwanis Club where she is active in the club’s purpose of improving the well-being of youth and elderly people in Rochester. Mensink is passionate about her job at Madonna Meadows Assisted Living Community, where she supports residents and families during what can be a challenging transition to assisted living. PASSION TO PURPOSE

Growing up, Mensink understood the value of personalized care for people later in life. Her passion for helping people was clear, even at a young age, when her mother suggested a career in health care. Living in a multi-generational household gave her perspective on and an understanding of the positive impact that can be made when one generation cares for another with individual needs top of mind.

10

March/April 2019 RWmagazine.com

With her clear passion to help the elderly, Mensink attended Rochester Community and Technical College and Winona State University, where she was able to adapt some of her coursework and tailor her psychology degree to also focus on business administration and health care. The field of assisted living called to Mensink’s passion. Mensink is also training as a docent for SPARK!, the History Center of Olmsted County’s new cultural program for adults with memory loss and their care partners. The program is sponsored by Madonna Living Communities of Rochester.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

Mensink entered the field of assisted living in 2000 and hasn’t looked back. She’s spent 18 years with Madonna Living Communities, much of her work focused on marketing, including promotional materials, website development and customer relationship management. She served as marketing director on the management team that oversaw expansion of the organization, including conversion to all private rooms and building two memory care units for residents requiring special care for dementia. Mensink collaborated on planning a new campus center and the construction and opening of the Madonna Summit campus in Byron. As admissions coordinator at Madonna Meadows in Rochester, Mensink now serves as a spokesperson for the facility. She helps potential residents and their families assess the facility, making sure it is a good fit for the resident as an individual.

If the fit is right, Mensink works with both the family and resident for a smooth adjustment to the facility and a new way of life. “It’s very rewarding. The gratitude of the families is immeasurable,” she adds.

CHALLENGES AND ADVICE TO OTHERS

Mensink cites outstanding mentors as helping her overcome challenges in her career. She recognizes she has been fortunate to have learned from both men and women as supportive leaders, mentors and friends. Being passionate about her work has helped Mensink to overcome some of the frustrating moments in her career, allowing her to focus on the resident and their family. Persistence is also important to Mensink, as is innovation and being creative in approaching solutions. Mensink offers a bit of wisdom. “Find your passion and follow it,” she states. “Assisted living is a hard job. It’s not always fun work but if you’ve got a passion for helping the elderly, follow that passion. It’s very rewarding.” Mensink challenges all leaders to look for innovative ways to deliver health care and personal support where people need it. “Don’t give up. Support and always encourage each other.” Erin Pagel is a freelance writer living in Rochester.

WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING? In an assisted living community, residents benefit from services like meal preparation, housekeeping and planned social activities. Assisted living staff encourage resident independence and are available to take on tasks that a resident can no longer do for themselves. When an elderly family member is no longer able to live independently but doesn’t need the full support of a nursing home, assisted living helps a resident retain some independence and gives loved ones peace of mind knowing the resident’s needs are being met.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL

GET A COACH LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE BY DENISE STEGALL

HEALTH COACHING HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING CAREERS OF THE DECADE AND THE FASTEST GROWING SOURCE OF EMPLOYMENT IN OUR ECONOMY. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, health coaching is expected to grow 21.9 percent by 2022. The medical community recognizes the power and value of health coaching. Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Dean Ornish, both well-known thought leaders in the world of health and wellness, believe that “lifestyle medicine” or “lifestyle change” is the future of health care. She encourages self-care and self-love so they can better communicate, be heard and cultivate the relationships they desire. “When I became a coach, I realized that I had to quit being a fixer,” shares Hiscox. “As a coach, our main goal is to see our clients’ progress and, ultimately, success. We don’t give them the answers but ask the questions to draw the answers out of them,” Hiscox explains. “Only then, when they have that ah-ha moment will they truly be ready for change.” LUANN BUECHLER

COACHING FROM THE SIDELINES Coaching, however, extends beyond the health field. Today you can find world-class coaches in the disciplines of relationships, business, finance, empowerment, passion and happy living, just to name a few. Lifestyle intervention is the direction in which I began my own career as a coach by helping clients eat real food, make good decisions and be accountable. “Everyone needs a coach from time to time or even ongoing,” says master trainer, coach and motivational speaker LuAnn Buechler. Buechler explains an ideal coach is “someone outside your close-knit circle, who is impartial and can see beyond your self-limitations.” Buechler is a Passion Test facilitator who helps her clients discern what they are truly passionate about so they can walk the path to living those passions. Empowerment coach Jennifer Hiscox with Higher Insight Life Coaching Group (HILC) works with clients who seek self-confidence. 12

COACHING VS. COUNSELING Is there a difference between coaching and counseling? Yes, but it’s not that simple. Coaching and counseling or therapy serve specific purposes, but they overlap a fair amount. Both coaches and counselors create a safe and positive space with the intent that it is the vehicle for change. It is important to note that coaches cannot diagnose mental health conditions.

Coaching focuses on the present and the future by helping clients set realistic goals to create the future they long for. Coaches provide support and ask evocative questions to enhance the skills, resources and creativity that the client already possesses, which allows them to function at a higher level. Counselors may spend more time than coaches examining the past, looking for solutions to emotional and mental health concerns. Unlike coaching, insurance typically covers sessions with a licensed counselor as often their role is to diagnose mental health challenges.

COACHING FOR MEN AND WOMEN When we look into who seeks counseling, according to the doctors at Gateway Counseling Center of all of the people who are in counseling, only one-third of them are men. Perhaps, it is because men tend not to seek help when they need it for fear of looking weak or being labeled. Buechler and Hiscox have both worked with men in their coaching programs. Buechler learned that, “it wasn’t until I added the words ‘for business’ to my Passion Test program did men begin to approach me and ask for help.” Hiscox’s experience working with men is a little different. She feels that the men she coaches are much readier for change than many of the women. “They are empowered to understand why they held people at a distance, which was keeping them from the relationships they wanted,” she explains. A DIFFERENT APPROACH Audrey Elegbede, Ph.D., has spent the past 15 years as a disability advocate for families with children who have autism. As a mother of an autistic child, Elegbede understands that counseling is the primary direction for families. “Counseling may not address the distinctive situation each family faces, however, and doesn't always provide specific techniques to move forward.”

AUDREY ELEGBEDE

Her recent move to Rochester has allowed Elegbede to try a different approach as a certified coach. Her deep understanding of autism fuels her passion to meet families where they are, and coach them to build the strategies and techniques that will help them alleviate caregiver burnout. Three things that Elegbede would like us to know about coaching are: It works, trust the process and you will get out of it what you put in.

THE HAPPY LIVING COACH As The Happy Living Coach, my clients are ready to live their dream life. Rather than focus on one random goal at a time I encourage them to discover their big picture. What is it that they would really love? Then the goals they set are more attainable and applicable to their result. Not only do they accomplish their goals, they exceed them.

FINDING THE RIGHT COACH How do you find a coach who is right for you? Here are some tips: • Get clear on your core values and what success means to you. • Consider your needs and your goals to decide whether working with a coach or a counselor right for you. • Interview a few coaches to ascertain whether there is a good “fit” with the professional’s personality, approach and values. • Visit LivingHealthyList.com. Living Healthy List is an online magazine and directory that connects you with the information and experts you seek in the areas of health and wellness, relationships, career, personal development, finance and fun.

I’ve always had a passion for helping others and maintaining a healthy lifestyle so becoming a wellness coach is a dream come true. I’ve gone through coaching as a client twice and it truly is a life-changing experience. The beauty of wellness coaching is that the client is in control - you get to decide the wellness area(s) to focus on. Together we’ll partner to explore your values, identify your strengths, and set goals to achieve your best self. I offer free initial consultations to determine if wellness coaching is good fit, plus six- or twelve-session packages. MICRONEEDLING ENHANCING SKIN’S APPEARANCE THROUGH COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY BY CAITLIN SUMMERS

CONFIDENCE, GRACE, AND WISDOM ARE JUST A FEW ATTRIBUTES THAT COME WITH AGE. Now in my 30s, and more confident, graceful and a bit wiser (than in my 20s), I think about aging and skincare.

Tanning beds, sunbathing and acne really take their toll on our delicate skin, leaving scars, wrinkles and sun spots. Dr. Srdan Babovic, a plastic surgeon at Olmsted Medical Center, says microneedling helps patients boost confidence and is backed by science to improve the look of skin by reducing the appearance of fine lines, pigment changes and acne scars. Dr. Babovic and his team perform this treatment using an FDA-approved Dermapen. Dr. Babovic believes that using science and data are important when choosing the right treatments.

produce collagen helps the skin get thicker, and over time reduces the lines and wrinkles. Microneedling can be done with vitamin C or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Dr. Babovic says the difference between using vitamin C versus PRP is what he is trying to achieve for the patient. He notes that vitamin C is often better for patients with acne scars. When used with microneedling, PRP can produce three- to five-times more collagen, which works better for fine lines or texture changes. Microneedling is also sometimes done in tandem with a procedure called intense pulse light (IPL) therapy, typically to reduce redness caused by rosacea.

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

WHAT TO EXPECT YOUR FIRST TIME

Microneedling, also called percutaneous collagen induction therapy (PCIT), is the procedure of taking very fine needles and using them on the surface of the skin, creating micropunctures. This process aids in the production of collagen, which is a protein our bodies produce naturally. Dr. Babovic says, “Naturally, with aging, skin gets thinner. You’re losing volume from your cheeks.” Using microneedling to

Although there aren’t many risks involved, Dr. Babovic and his team ensure that each patient’s medical history is thoroughly reviewed. Since microneedling involves creating small punctures in the skin, he notes, “You have created skin injury, and that can get infected if one does not adhere to strict procedural guidelines.” Dr. Babovic and his team make sure the

equipment and the surface of the skin is sterile before beginning treatment. Once prepped, a numbing cream is applied to the face and left for about 20-30 minutes. In this time, if PRP is used, the blood is drawn from the patient and spun down in a centrifuge separating the red blood cells and leaving the PRP. After the skin is numb, the PRP is applied and the needling begins. The entire process takes about 60 to 90 minutes.

CARE AFTER TREATMENT Dr. Babovic doesn’t recommend his patients plan a night out after the treatment. Although you’ll feel like you’re glowing, your skin will be red and raw. Don’t worry, most of this goes away by the next day, apart from some slight redness and flaking. Patients should also avoid putting on makeup until the next day. As always, don’t forget moisturizer and sun block. If you’re looking for the fountain of youth in a one-time treatment, then this isn’t for you. Dr. Babovic states the typical recommendation for the best results is about four treatments—once a month for four months, then maintenance treatments every six months.

MAKING AN APPOINTMENT Dermapen or microneedling is a multi-benefit treatment, whether it’s for acne scars or fine lines. At Olmsted Medical Center this treatment costs $350 per treatment, the PRP is an additional charge. If it’s your first time being seen in the plastic surgery department, you’ll pay a $200 consultation fee that is a one-time only payment if you are seen at least once a year. To make an appointment for your consultation call 507-529-6740. Caitlin Summers is a freelance writer and an advocate for women’s health.

MEDISPAS

IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND BEAUTY OF YOUR SKIN BY CINDY MENNENGA

MEDISPAS HAVE BECOME VERY POPULAR OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. Women, primarily between the ages of 45

and 65, have begun to turn to medispas to erase the signs of aging, repair sun-damaged skin, minimize scars, get a facial or have procedures that improve the health and beauty of their skin.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPA AND A MEDISPA The American Med Spa Association defines a medical spa as a “hybrid between an aesthetic medical center and a day spa” with four core elements: (1) the provision of noninvasive

(i.e., nonsurgical) aesthetic medical services; (2) under the general supervision of a licensed physician; (3) performed by trained, experienced and qualified practitioners; (4) with on-site supervision by a licensed health care professional.

LOCAL MEDISPAS We spoke with the owners of four medispas in Rochester—Anew Medspa Clinic, Essence Skin Clinic, Posh Facial Esthetics and Med Spa and Slow Coast Spa—to find out about the services they provide and to understand why people come to their clinics for treatments. We also wanted to learn more about the owners’ backgrounds, how they chose this line of work and what differentiates them.

ANEW MEDSPA CLINIC

Dr. Vicky Hagstrom, founder, chief medical officer and president of Anew Medspa Clinic, says the difference between a spa and a medispa is the level of services. She explains, a medispa has “medical-grade services and a medical focus, including injections and high-powered lasers.” A longtime resident of Rochester, Dr. Hagstrom attended Mayo Medical School in the 90s and practiced family medicine at Olmsted Medical Center for several years. Dr. Hagstrom opened Anew Medspa Clinic 10 years ago. She opened the original clinic

in downtown Minneapolis and relocated the clinic to Minnetonka five years ago. Four years ago, she opened Anew Medspa Clinic satellite clinic in Rochester. Dr. Hagstrom provides direct patient care, full-time. In the Rochester clinic, she is the sole provider for injections and laser services. “The most cutting-edge techniques and products I use are Bellafill®,” shares Dr. Hagstrom. “It’s most cutting-edge because it’s long-lasting and provides a stimulus for collagen production in the deep layers of tissue.” Anew offers traditional neurotoxins, like Botox® and Dysport®. They also provide a full-spectrum laser platform for skin rejuvenation including fractionated laser resurfacing, “which is the most powerful, most results-oriented procedure we have for tightening the skin’s surface,” adds Dr. Hagstrom. Anew also offers the HALO procedure, which is a very innovative technology, currently available only at Anew’s Minnetonka location. Dr. Hagstrom explains,

“It is the most expeditious way to polish the surface of the skin with laser techniques. Most of my patients are women between the ages of 45 and 65. My signature, nonsurgical face-lifting and facial restoration approach is to use Bellafill for the short and long-term effects and facial contouring, and facial polishing with the HALO laser which provides the best results with the least amount of distress. Recovery time is very short.” Dr. Hagstrom says her patients range in age from teens to 90s for skin-related issues. She adds, “Some people have a single problem they want fixed, and others just want things improved.” “I really enjoy the tools I get to use and the artistry I get to do,” Dr. Hagstrom says. “I also enjoy the satisfaction I get from changing somebody’s life because it really is that deep. It’s not a vanity thing. Our outside really is relevant to how we feel about ourselves in general, which is why we do things like buy nice clothes and style our hair and get mani-pedis. This is just another extension of self-care.”

ESSENCE SKIN CLINIC

Jennifer Sanneman, of Essence Skin Clinic, says, “I’ve been in the skin-care industry for almost 30 years. We were the first skin-care company to exist in Rochester. I think our education, knowledge and experience is above anything else. We are truly a laser clinic because we have 12 different lasers in our clinic. Plus, Allergan has rated us in the top six percent in the nation over 25,000 clinics, as injectionists.”

“I always wanted to be in the beauty industry,” Sanneman explains, “and I took prerequisites to go to med school because I wanted to be a dermatologist. After having children, I had to stop the education because I was driving back and forth to the University of Minnesota, and it was too much.” Eventually, Sanneman went to cosmetology school and opened a makeup and cosmetic salon in Kasson. She decided the business wasn’t for her and went back to school to get certified as a laser practitioner. When she opened Essence Skin Clinic, she says, “I hired a physician to do some of the things I wasn’t licensed for. It was a great marriage of medical and cosmetic. We have a nurse on staff. We have a surgeon who’s on the state board of medicine. We have estheticians here. We are blessed because we have Mayo Clinic here.” Essence Skin Clinic offers a vast array of services. Sanneman explains, “We can do

laser hair removal, veins, sun damage, brown spots, tightening of the skin, scars, acne—it all depends on what they are looking for. We can melt fat, we can freeze fat. There are just so many things we can do.” Each laser does different things. They also have an intense pulse light (IPL), which is not a laser. “We also do beta testing for some lasers to get FDA approval in the United States. We also educate physicians and nurses and laser practitioners that want advanced practices or laser companies that want us to help educate them,” Sanneman says proudly. “I love what I do,” Sanneman shares. “We do Botox, Juvederm®, microdermabrasions, facials, medical chemical peels, microneedling, permanent cosmetics—anything that works with the health and beauty aspects of the skin, which is a big organ. I like that people take pride in their looks. It’s not vanity; it’s about being the best you can.”

POSH FACIAL ESTHETICS AND MED SPA

Stephanie Kriener, RN, BSN, owner and operator of Posh Facial Esthetics and Med Spa, says, “A medispa is going to have more medical grade treatments. These treatments are going to focus more on specific skin conditions such as pigmentation, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, volume loss and redness. Med spas are under the supervision of a medical director. It is definitely more results-oriented treatments versus a spa’s ‘feel good, relaxation' services.”

22

March/April 2019 RWmagazine.com

“One of the best things about working in the esthetics industry is being introduced to new technologies and modalities,” Kriener shares. “One of those is a treatment called Ultherapy®. Ultherapy is the only noninvasive FDA-cleared procedure that lifts and tightens your neck, chin and brow and improves fine lines and wrinkles on the chest. Posh is the only clinic in Rochester to offer this service.” Posh Facial Esthetics and Med Spa offers multiple services. Kriener adds, “Whether you want to get ready for an event, prevent fine lines and wrinkles, treat acne, etc., there is truly something for everyone here.” Posh offers Botox, dermal fillers, microderms, facials, microneedling, chemical peels, laser hair removal, Ultherapy®, BBL (broadband light) and medical-grade skincare and lash products. Kriener says, “My education started at Northeast Iowa Community College in 1995, where I attained my associate degree in

nursing. I then attained my bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Iowa. I worked as a pediatric cardiac ICU nurse at Mayo Clinic for 16 years, but I always had a passion for beauty and esthetics. Once I started to inject, fill and sculpt my clients I knew it was something I loved and wanted to take to the next level and open my own business. I have been injecting for six years now and I continue to be passionate about each person I work with.” “My passion for nursing has carried over to my children,” Kriener shares, “my son Kyle (19) is a freshman at Mankato State University in the nursing program, hoping to become a nurse anesthetist. My daughter Kaitlyn (17) is a senior at Mayo High School and wants to start Rochester Community and Technical College in the fall for nursing. She has already attained her certified nursing assistant certificate through the PSEO option at her high school.”

SLOW COAST SPA Andria Booth-Kowalczyk, APRN, CNP and owner of Slow Coast Spa, says, “The most obvious difference is that a medical spa offers medical-grade treatments (requiring a medical license) to correct deep-lying skin concerns (rosacea, acne, capillaries, sun damage, birth marks/port wine stains, etc.) volume loss and etched-in facial lines.” “Just do your homework, because at a certain point a surgical procedure will yield a better result,” Booth-Kowalczyk shares. “Work with someone who knows the difference and respects your wallet.” When asked what’s unique about Slow Coast Spa, Booth-Kowalczyk says, “I never wonder how I stack up against others in town. I have a unique approach, I tell the truth because I know the truth, I don't offer smokeand-mirror treatments, I work in the deeper layers of skin and subcutaneous tissues, and I suspect the biggest difference is that I work alone. It's just me. I handle all communications, all scheduling and provide every treatment I offer. I own my results. I take pride in offering only corrective treatments that provide sustainable results.” Slow Coast Spa’s specialties include: laser resurfacing, IPL laser treatments, NdYag vessel

treatments, laser hair removal, Botox, Juvederm, dermal fillers, Kybella®, suture/thread lifts, medical-needling, scar remodeling and medicalgrade skin care products. Booth-Kowalczyk says people typically choose to visit Slow Coast Spa because, “I see people of all ages, ethnicities, genders, orientations, etc. I'm culturally sensitive and am honored to join every client on their journey toward a brighter glow. I'm in my 40s and don't wear makeup, ever. That seems to be a big draw for clients—the idea that I can personally showcase healthy, glowing, naked skin—and provides credibility and hope that they too can conquer their quest for a streamlined, makeup-free life. Most of my clients are striving to ‘pump-the-breaks’ on aging. The treatment plan looks a little different for every client, but typically involves rebalancing a noisy complexion, softening lines and restoring angles.” Booth-Kowalczyk is a nurse practitioner with a tenured career in hospital-based plastic surgery since 2002. “Back as a burn and trauma nurse at Stanford (in California),” Booth-Kowalczyk shares, “I was inspired by lasers when we started using them to remodel traumatic scars (yes, the talent of plastic

surgery teams extends far beyond cosmetic augmentations). I know skin at a cellular level and understand how it behaves in the setting of light physics and dermal manipulation (a necessary foundation when handling and providing dermal treatments using big equipment).” Booth-Kowalczyk has some tips and recommendations for a do-it-yourself glowstarter. She advises women to “smile, it's the freest facelift.” She also encourages women to wear sunscreen every day, and her last recommendation for a healthy glow, “Sex. Seriously, when have you not been glowing after sex?”

IS A MEDISPA FOR YOU? While each of these medispas offer slightly different services, each one wants to help their clients fix imperfections and be more satisfied with their appearance. If you haven’t visited a medispa yet, but you’d like to bolster your appearance in one way or another, consider reaching out to a local medispa clinic and see how they can help you address areas of concern. FOOD AND WINE

ASIAN-AMERICAN CUISINE

EXPLORING ETHNIC FOOD WITHOUT TRAVELING AROUND THE GLOBE BY CINDY MENNENGA

THERE ARE NUMEROUS TYPES OF ASIAN CUISINE, REFLECTING ITS DIVERSE HISTORY AND CULTURE. As the modern Asian-

American population evolves, the transformation of Asian ethnic cuisine continues to blend traditional and contemporary styles and flavors into Asian-American cuisine. While there is a great deal of variety from one regional cuisine to another, the overriding commonality is that Asian cuisine is simply delicious. With an explosion of flavor in every bite, it’s always fun to dine at an Asian restaurant—whether it’s the

food, the chopsticks, interior decor or the personable wait staff—it always seems like a special occasion.

WHERE IN THE WORLD

Asian cuisine comes from the vast regions of Asia—China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea and Mongolia to name a few. Each of these regional categories of foods have numerous sub-categories that further define the region or district from which the food originates. Chinese food has eight main regional cuisines, known as the Eight Great Traditions: Anhui, Cantonese, Fujian, Hunan, Jiangsu, Shandong, Sichuan and Zhejiang. There are even further sub-categories of Chinese within the Eight Great Traditions.

FORTUNE COOKIE ORIGINS

In keeping with traditions adopted here in the United States, every Asian meal concludes with a fortune cookie containing a piece of paper 24

with a clever quote or ambiguous prophecy. Have you ever wondered where the fortune cookie came from? It wasn’t China—in fact, fortune cookies are not even served in China. Fortune cookies originated as a JapaneseAmerican confection known as a “fortune tea cake.” During World War II, JapaneseAmericans were placed in internment camps on the West Coast after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and Americans feared every person of Japanese descent. Enterprising Chinese business owners jumped into the void created by the detained Japanese-American fortune tea cake manufacturers and began making “fortune cookies.” The popular sweet treat has been associated with Chinese food ever since.

SPRING ROLLS

Spring rolls are the vegetarian super-light, crispy and tender vegetarian appetizer cousin of the traditional egg roll. Spring rolls are usually eaten during the Spring Festival in China, hence their name. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Total Time: 40 minutes INGREDIENTS • 1/4 cup canola oil, divided • 8 cups napa cabbage, sliced thinly • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 carrots sliced, thinly • 8 oz. bamboo shoots, sliced thinly • 2 Tbsp. mirin

• 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce • 2 tsp. sesame oil • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch • 24 8-inch square spring roll wrappers • Canola oil for frying

INSTRUCTIONS Add half of the canola oil to a large heavy skillet. On medium high heat, add in the napa cabbage cooking 8-10 minutes while stirring until almost all the liquid it releases has cooked off. Next, add garlic, carrots and bamboo shoots and cook for 1 minute while stirring. Then add mirin, soy sauce and sesame oil while stirring. Let filling cool completely. Mix cornstarch with two tablespoons of water. Roll out the spring roll wrapper, brush cornstarch slurry around the edges to moisten and add about 2 tablespoons of filling in a long rectangle shape, folding in from the sides and rolling the wrappers closed tightly. Heat 3 inches of oil in a Dutch oven to 325º and fry the spring rolls until golden brown (about 2-3 minutes).

visits to Asia Fusion and Hunan Garden. Continuing our exploration of Asian restaurants, my husband and I dined at Pho Chau in Rochester. This wildly popular Vietnamese restaurant on north Broadway was a bustling hive of activity and the guests were clearly enjoying their meals. We ordered a couple of appetizers which magically arrived moments later. The cheese wontons were crispy on the outside and hot and creamy inside. They were prepared perfectly and to say they were delicious is an understatement. The pork and shrimp spring rolls were also cooked to perfection and contained generous portions of shrimp and pork. We thoroughly enjoyed both appetizers and appreciated the prompt and polite service. For entrees, we ordered the beef stir-fry and the shrimp stir-fry with mixed vegetables. The beef stir-fry arrived with plentiful portions of meat and the crisp-tender

veggies were wonderful. The shrimp stir-fry was fantastic: the jumbo shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the veggies were also cooked just right. Both entrees were sizable portions, enabling us to bring some home for the next day’s lunch. Pho Chau is a relatively small restaurant, but because the staff is so efficient, they were able to serve customers quickly— accommodating both dine-in and takeout— with ease. As soon as one table of guests left, it was quickly cleared, and new guests were seated immediately. We never felt rushed, which we appreciated. We definitely enjoyed our visit to Pho Chau and plan to return soon.

is an adventurous spirit and a willing palate. There are numerous amazing Asian restaurants to explore in Rochester. While they are similar in nature, each is unique and special in its own way. The owners and menus reflect their unique history and experiences. If you have time and interest in cooking Asian cuisine, experiment with this tasty spring roll recipe. Get creative and add shrimp or pork or any ingredient of your choosing—that’s the fun thing about Asian food, you can create numerous variations to one basic dish—and it’s like a new dish each time. FOOD AND WINE

KANPAI! THE 411 ON SAKE BY NICOLE CZARNOMSKI

SAKE (PRONOUNCED SAH-KAY), IS A JAPANESE BEVERAGE MADE WITH RICE AND SERVED AT A VARIETY OF TEMPERATURES. It’s usually

sipped while indulging in appetizers or sashimi and sushi at Japanese restaurants. Sake is also enjoyed on special occasions in traditional Japanese rituals, and it pairs well with lighter fare like fish, chicken and vegetarian dishes. FROM RICE TO REFRESHMENT

Sake has three main ingredients—rice, water and koji mold spores. Although it’s mistakenly referred to as a wine, it’s brewed like beer. However, sake experts are known as sommeliers or wine stewards. Robert Riggs, store manager at Apollo Liquor, says, “To create sake, rice is polished or milled in a hopper to remove the outside portion known as the bran. The outer layers of rice have impurities, so the higher quality sake is polished longer than the lesser quality.” The polished rice is soaked in water, and then steamed to bring out starch molecules. Koji mold spores are massaged into the rice to convert the starch to sugar. The yeast is added to consume the sugars which produce alcohol, thus creating a mash known as moromi. The moromi then ferments for 18 to 32 days.

White lees or unfermented solids are pressed away, and the clear sake runs off. The liquid is filtered, pasteurized and aged about six months. Afterward, the sake is bottled with an alcohol content of about 12 to 18 percent.

COLD AND HOT SAKE

“Sake served cold is of higher quality and displays many delicate flavors. The flavors naturally occurring in sake are apricot, peach and pear. The basic flavors exhibit acidity, tartness, sweetness, dryness and bitterness. Here at Apollo, we also carry infused sake, like coconut with lemongrass flavors,” adds Riggs. Although hot sake is lower quality, heating it alleviates the bitterness and enhances its bold flavors, becoming drier than cold sake. Heated sake also increases the effect of the alcohol. Hot sake complements cold foods like sashimi and sushi and dishes flavored with soy sauce. Chilled sake pairs well with sweet and sour dishes and hot pot which is a steaming soup stock. To make hot sake, pour the sake into the ceramic flask, and then place the flask in a bath of hot water for two to two-and-a-half minutes. When the sake reaches about 110 to 120 degrees remove from the bath and enjoy. It’s important not to boil the sake. If you fancy yourself a mixologist, try whipping up a sake cocktail.

POURING ETIQUETTE

Sake is served in larger ceramic carafes and poured into smaller vessels for drinking. It is considered proper to pour sake for others. Place two hands on the tokkuri, or flask: one hand goes on the neck part of the bottle and the other hand is placed at the bottom and used to tip the flask so the liquid pours into the drinking cup (this is mostly when drinking in work or business-related gatherings). When drinking with your friends, it’s acceptable to pour the beverage with one hand. When cups are full, it’s time for a toast. STYLISH TRENDS THAT WILL

FLOOR YOU

POPULAR FLOORING OPTIONS FOR YOUR HOME BY TRISH AMUNDSON

ARE YOU CONSIDERING NEW FLOORING AS PART OF A HOME MAKEOVER OR CONSTRUCTION?

From carpet and wood flooring to tile, luxury vinyl planks, concrete finishes and more, the options are plentiful. Local flooring experts are a great resource and can help you sort through the thousands of choices. As you shop around, you will see familiar products and learn about innovative ideas. You might be surprised by new flooring trends that offer not only style and durability, but possibly the best long-term solutions for your home.

TILE IN STYLE We are definitely seeing a variety of fun things in flooring,” says Missy Bakken, owner of DeGeus Tile and Granite and DeGeus CarpetsPlus. “More and more people are starting to introduce textures and designs into their flooring.” The vintage look is in, and tiles with retro designs for both floors

and walls are extremely popular. The use of textures and different surfaces on floors, countertops and backsplashes adds creativity and helps make a room stand out. Tile flooring, which has long been recognized for its style and performance, along with granite and quartz materials are all very functional and available in many colors and patterns.

APPEAL OF LUXURY VINYL Vinyl flooring has evolved, and today, many consumers are installing luxury vinyl products throughout their homes. “This is the fastest growing flooring surface in the last five years,” says Bakken. Luxury vinyl flooring looks like real wood or tile flooring, and it comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Many homeowners are mixing grays and wood tones, which are commonly used colors. Darren Groteboer, president of Carpet One, sees similar trends. “Luxury vinyl plank and luxury vinyl tile are ‘all the buzz’ right now,” he states. “In general, hard surfaces are trending more than ever.” In addition to grays and wood tones,

he notes light coastal colors also are gaining popularity. Luxury vinyl products have an advantage over traditional wood and tile flooring because they are significantly less expensive, and they are waterproof and extremely durable. “While carpet continues to be the preferred floor covering in bedrooms and basements, we are starting to see customers select luxury vinyl products in these areas too,” adds Groteboer. “Many builders are even deferring to luxury vinyl products in new construction rather than traditional wood floors. The product looks so authentic that it’s very difficult to tell the difference.”

CUSTOM CONCRETE No longer just for the garage, finished concrete flooring is another current trend. “Finished concrete floors have become a logical choice because of the great value they deliver as well as the numerous design and customization options available to fit any style,” says Jason Trihey, owner of Dapper Surfaces. The ever-growing attraction to finished concrete floors also can

be attributed to their durability. “They are sustainable and do not need to be replaced,” says Trihey. “I've seen a shift from reddishbrown and walnut—earthy tones—to a more modern minimalist gray genre over the last 10 years or so.” For the last few years, gray has been the top choice. Other advantages of concrete include low maintenance and increased indoor air quality, because it is not susceptible to water damage and doesn’t support the growth of mold and mildew. “Keep in mind that the condition of the concrete to be finished greatly influences the cost and can limit the design options,” explains Trihey. “Also, finishing smaller spaces or one room can be cost-prohibitive and impractical based on the amount of equipment and process steps required to finish a project. Typically, costs are comparable to other hard surface flooring options unless extensive removal, repair, preparation or resurfacing is needed. Trish Amundson is a Rochesterarea freelance writer.

FINANCIAL

G N I C E N A M N O I F H RE OUR Y WHY REFINANCE AND THE STEPS TO TAKE BY ALISON RENTSCHLER

YOU MAY HAVE HEARD REFINANCING A HOME IS A GOOD IDEA WHEN INTEREST RATES ARE DOWN OR YOU WANT TO DO SOME HOME IMPROVEMENTS. Find out from

some local experts about why you should consider refinancing, when might be a good time and where to go for more information about refinancing. WHY REFINANCE Andrea Eickhoff, vice president of real estate lending at Olmsted National Bank in Rochester, says, “There are multiple reasons why a client would consider a refinance.” Eickhoff explains the three most common types of refinances are refinancing for a lower interest rate, for a different term (either shorter or longer), or to receive cash-out. To receive cash-out, she notes the homeowner taps into the equity of their house to use the funds for debt consolidation, home improvement or college expenses. “There are two main reasons people will consider refinancing their mortgage loan,” notes Alan Holtan, real estate lending adviser at First Alliance Credit Union in Rochester. “One reason is to reduce their monthly payment to improve their cash flow through refinancing to a lower interest rate. Another reason is to reduce the term of the mortgage so the home will be paid in full sooner. For example, typically someone with a 30-year mortgage will refinance to a 15or 10-year term.” 30

March/April 2019 RWmagazine.com

WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO REFINANCE? “Whether it is a good time or not to refinance could honestly be a different answer for every client. That is why it is important to sit down with your loan officer to review your personal scenario, calculate the costs versus benefits and determine if the refinance is a good fit for you," Eickhoff adds. Holtan notes, “A good time to refinance is when the current interest rate is lower than the interest rate you are currently paying on your loan. A helpful rule-of-thumb is if you can reduce your interest rate by 1 percent, refinance. The size of your mortgage will impact that decision too, so check with a trusted mortgage professional about how refinancing will impact your financial situation.”

INTEREST RATES “Interest rates are still very good in today’s market, absolutely,” says Eickhoff. “The anticipation of what the rates may do in the future is an unknown factor and all depends on the economy.” Holtan points out, “Interest rates are very good right now, generally around 4.5 percent. If you took out your mortgage 10 years ago, you’re probably sitting at an interest rate of around 6 percent, meaning you could be a good candidate to refinance. Unfortunately, there is no crystal ball to tell us if interest rates are going to increase or decrease at any given time. So if you’re considering refinancing, it’s

best to make an informed decision quickly, since there is no guarantee the rates will stay favorable to your specific situation.”

WHERE TO GO FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT REFINANCING “If you are considering a potential refinance, or have questions on refinancing, I would recommend reaching out to your local real estate lender or loan officer,” suggests Eickhoff. “They specialize in home financing and will be able to guide and direct you with your specific scenario.” Holtan suggests that if you’re unsure about whether or not refinancing is a good option for you, it’s a good idea to talk with a trusted mortgage professional. He says the majority of financial institutions in Rochester offer mortgage services, including First Alliance Credit Union. “A trusted mortgage professional should be willing to explore all your refinancing options to help you meet your goals,” Holtan adds. Keep in mind that you will likely have to pay closing costs again when refinancing your mortgage loan, because you are essentially taking out a new mortgage. It’s important to take these additional costs into consideration when deciding to refinance your mortgage. Alison Rentschler is a writer and editor living in Rochester.

DOWNSIZING FREEING YOURSELF FROM “STUFF” BY CINDY MENNENGA

WHEN MOST PEOPLE THINK ABOUT DOWNSIZING, THEY IMAGINE ENDLESS PILES OF THEIR POSSESSIONS TO SORT THROUGH AND NAIL-BITING DECISIONS ABOUT WHAT TO DO WITH GRANDMA’S GOOD CHINA. Because

downsizing is often thought to be a daunting task, it’s easy to procrastinate and put it on next year’s to-do list, which will quite possibly slide onto the following year’s list of projects. Making decisions is difficult, and it takes courage to face your discomfort and move forward.

GETTING RID OF THE CLUTTER People downsize for lots of reasons, but most frequently they begin the process to reduce the quantity of things they drag around with them from home to home, year after year. The book “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter,” written by Margareta Magnusson, describes “döstädning,” which is the process of getting rid of the clutter in your life, especially as you approach your later years. Magnusson is Swedish and promotes the concept of embracing minimalism and clearing out those items that no longer serve you—it’s also a way to get rid of many of your possessions, thereby saving your family from having to go through your belongings after you pass away. You don’t have to wait until you are approaching your golden years to begin living a more calm and ordered life—Swedish death cleaning can be done at any stage of life.

WHY PEOPLE DOWNSIZE Professional organizer, Sara Lohse, owner of The Rescued Room, says, “Life transitions seem to be the common denominator for downsizing. The children have moved out, and the big house sits ‘too empty.’ Retirees want less home maintenance and more travel/life experiences. Downsizing is an obvious solution to so many of these situations.”

32

March/April 2019 RWmagazine.com

People frequently downsize in preparation for a move to a smaller home. Realtor Laurie Mangen is a senior citizen real estate specialist at Keller Williams. She teaches people about the process of downsizing and helps them get started. Mangen says the people who attend her classes are “going to be moving eventually. It could be six months to three years.” She advises clients who want to begin downsizing to “pick one out-of-the-way room—the attic or a spare bedroom, for example—to start out with and work for three hours tops.”

BENEFITS OF DOWNSIZING There are numerous advantages to downsizing. Lohse explains, “The benefits of downsizing are clear... saved time, money, energy and fewer headaches. After downsizing, there are fewer bulbs to replace, faucets to fix and rooms to vacuum. Property taxes go down, and free time goes up. Less time maintaining ‘stuff’ equates to more time to do something meaningful!” It can be difficult to part with items that have sentimental value. That’s what keeps people stuck—they don’t know what to do with those items they hold dear. Mangen adds, “It all comes down to the guilt. The reason people keep those things is they hold the memory. I tell people to take a picture…that really releases the guilt and they feel good about it.” Taking a picture allows people to still see the item, show it to others and enjoy the memory without having it take up precious space in their home. After a thorough purging, a very significant benefit for folks, Mangen says, “People feel cleansed.” Most people, after getting rid of their many possessions, often feel lighter and wish they had done it sooner. Getting over the emotional hurdle of starting the process is often one of the biggest challenges. In an upcoming issue, we will explore more tips from the experts, walk through the process of downsizing and meet some people who have already gone through the downsizing process. BEAUTY AND HEALTH

HEALTHY HEALTHY SLEEP AGING THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP BY GINA DEWINK

SLEEP IS ONE OF THE THREE PILLARS OF GOOD HEALTH, ALONG WITH DIET AND EXERCISE. In a culture that works

24/7, sleeping can seem like a low priority. Yet, around the world, there are researchers, physicians, mental health workers and even dentists who regularly see the effects of poor sleep. The sleep medicine community is hoping we will all place sleep at the top of our priority lists.

Rochester is home to World Sleep Society, an international nonprofit that aims to better sleep health worldwide by connecting sleep researchers and practitioners from around the world to push research forward. World Sleep Society routinely joins people from more than 70 countries to compare and communicate the current research in the fast-paced field of sleep medicine.

WORLD SLEEP DAY

Friday, March 15, 2019, the world will unite for a one-day awareness event aimed to put a spotlight on healthy sleep and its overall importance. World Sleep Society hosts this day to help the public understand that sleep is not something that should be overlooked.

Angie Granum, who has been working at World Sleep Society since 2013, says, “In the past six years, I have watched World Sleep Day grow from a couple participants to literally hundreds. If you search the news, you will find articles about sleep in every major news source. We have loved watching the sleep field’s growth. We hope by bringing awareness to the benefits of maintaining healthy sleep, more people will realize it’s just as important as what you eat or how much you work out.”

SLEEP STUDIES AND LOCAL RESOURCES

In Rochester, we are fortunate to have two accredited sleep centers, as well as other nonaccredited sleep sites. The Center for Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic's campus in Minnesota is one of the largest sleep medicine facilities in the United States. The staff at the Center for Sleep Medicine treat around 6,500 sleep disorder patients each year. The center offers a 24-bed facility for overnight sleep studies (polysomnograms).

One common, treatable sleep disorder is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA can be treated, yet many sufferers do not seek medical assistance for this common disorder. Dr. Melissa C. Lipford says of her sleep research at Mayo Clinic, “Most of my research involves the intersections between sleep and neurology. One of my research studies involved investigating the relationship between breathing problems during sleep and strokes. We found that irregular heart rhythms are implicated in most people with sleep apnea who suffer strokes. This finding might help us in learning why people with sleep apnea are at a higher risk for having a stroke and may even help us toward preventing recurrent strokes in patients with sleep apnea.” Another recent Mayo Clinic news release noted that hot flashes and night sweats could be connected to a higher OSA risk in middle-aged women. Olmsted Medical Center (OMC) also has an accredited sleep program that includes a sleep lab. OMC’s sleep medicine program assesses and diagnoses patients though sleep studies or wearable devices to track sleep. World Sleep Society notes that of the 94 classified sleep disorders, most are preventable or treatable yet only one-third of people seek treatment. World Sleep Day is the perfect time to celebrate the importance of healthy sleep. Gina Dewink is a communications specialist and writer devoted to spreading awareness about the importance of sleep.

BEAUTY AND HEALTH

SLEEP EXPERT DR. MELISSA C. LIPFORD BY GINA DEWINK

DR. MELISSA C. LIPFORD IS A NEUROLOGIST AND SLEEP MEDICINE CONSULTANT AT MAYO CLINIC. She is also on the

World Sleep Day Committee. Dr. Lipford has been on staff at Mayo Clinic since 2012, spending most of her time in the Center for Sleep Medicine. These are very treatable disorders, and taking action can result in huge improvements in quality of life,” Lipford concludes.

During medical school, Lipford fell in love with neurology. Within her neurology training, she had the opportunity to spend time working in a sleep clinic. Within a few weeks of learning about the relationship between sleep and various aspects of health, she was able to narrow down her career path further.

THE PATH TO SLEEP

ASK AN EXPERT “I wish the general public knew that the vast majority of sleep problems are treatable,” Lipford states. “I can’t tell you how often I see patients who have struggled for years with poor sleep and low daytime energy levels. My female patients, especially, are so busy in their professional activities, caring for their families or serving as a caregiver for an elder parent or ill spouse that they wait until symptoms have become severe before taking the time to care for themselves.” Lipford also points out that for women, worsening of sleep in the perimenopausal period is common. “There are many measures which can improve sleep during this phase in our lives, such as treating hot flashes and screening for and treating sleep apnea. Insomnia and restless legs syndrome are also common in women, but these problems are not always asked about during a general physical.

Lipford wasn’t always a sleep expert. In fact, her career path had a very different beginning. Though she had interest in becoming a doctor, she graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. Lipford explains, “I moved to Kansas City and worked for several years as a software developer for a large company that creates electronic medical record systems for health care organizations. Later, I transitioned to a medical device development firm.” “While I enjoyed my work, I found myself wanting to be on the other side—using technology to directly care for patients.” At that point, Lipford’s husband, Brian, had graduated from law school after deciding to leave his career as a newspaper editor. “Seeing his hard work translate into satisfying career opportunities was inspiring,” Lipford recalls. After a lot of consideration, Lipford decided to pursue medical school. “I enrolled in evening classes to complete the prerequisite courses for medical school and took the entrance examinations,” she explains. She was accepted to the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where she approached medical school as a job. “I would show up to the library at 6 a.m. and study, go to my classes, and then go back to the library to study until 6 p.m.,” she says of her medical school experience. It didn’t take long to realize it was the right path for her.

WORKING AT MAYO CLINIC “When I matched at Mayo Clinic, I knew I had to take the amazing opportunity,” Lipford says. “Brian agreed to close his law practice and is now a supervising attorney with Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services.” They had their first child shortly after Lipford started her neurology residency at Mayo Clinic and their second after she joined on as staff. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be at an institution that is very supportive of families,” Lipford shares. Their children, Malcolm, 9, and Alexander, 5, understand that sleep needs to be a priority in their household. Because the field of sleep medicine is relatively new, there are many unanswered questions that translate into research possibilities. Today, Lipford is able to use her engineering background toward researching new technologies to help patients with sleep and neurologic disorders. Gina Dewink is a communications specialist and writer devoted to spreading awareness about the importance of sleep.

COMMUNITY

Gift of Life TRANSPLANT HOUSE CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF HOPE AND HEALING BY CINDY MENNENGA

GIFT OF LIFE TRANSPLANT HOUSE, A BEACON OF HOPE, WAS ESTABLISHED 35 YEARS AGO. It serves as a home away from home for approximately 4,500 patients and their caregivers who stay there while going through the transplant journey. They may be receiving or have received a life-saving organ transplant (such as heart, heart-lung, pancreas, liver or kidney), stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant. The house also welcomes patients receiving CAR-T therapy, which is a procedure that helps treat certain types of cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma.

MISSION AND VISION Executive Director Mary Wilder brings lots of experience and enthusiasm to her position. In 2017, after holding leadership roles with increasing responsibility, Wilder relocated from the Twin Cities to take the reins at Gift of Life Transplant House. Having donated a kidney to her father several years ago, she says it seemed like providence when she learned of the position. Thirty-five years ago, Rochester resident Ed Pompeian had the idea for Gift of Life Transplant House to aid transplant patients in their recovery, as he himself is a recipient of two kidney transplants. “I believe my primary responsibility is to carry forth the mission and the vision of Gift

of Life Transplant House,” shares Wilder. “Ed Pompeian had the vision of creating a home away from home for people who were here experiencing transplants and going through that process. He realized that a home-like atmosphere, with support from others experiencing their own journey, would promote recovery.”

STAYING AT GIFT OF LIFE TRANSPLANT HOUSE Wilder wants to “uphold what he (Pompeian) started and to provide affordable, high-quality accommodations for transplant patients and their caregivers in a supportive, home-like environment. We charge only $30 a night for guests to stay here. Guests prepare their own meals, and we offer fully equipped kitchens with refrigerator, freezer and dry goods space. Guests can enjoy their meals in our communal dining rooms and long-term friendships are made over a cup of coffee or bowl of soup.” “We are the first and the largest transplant house in the nation,” Wilder says. “We have 84 bedrooms, while most transplant houses in other parts of the country have only 6-8 rooms. A stem cell transplant stay is typically 100 days, so that limits the number of people they (smaller transplant houses) can serve.”

DONATE LIFE MONTH April is National Donate Life Month. The main objective of National Donate Life Month is to raise awareness and encourage people to become organ donors. Throughout the month, there are a number of events planned here in

Rochester. Some highlights are The Walk of Remembrance, to commemorate donors and recipients, which starts at Saint Marys Hospital and ends at Gift of Life Transplant House. The Timmay 5K—in honor of Tim Rasmusson, a young local man who passed away at 26 years old, ultimately donating several organs— is always held the last Saturday in April. Funds raised from the 5K help support Gift of Life Transplant House. Another highlight will include the unveiling of a Donor Honor Wall at the Gonda Building.

CELEBRATING 35 YEARS OF HOPE AND HEALING On Dec. 10, 1984, Gift of Life House opened its doors to transplant patients in Rochester. Thirty-five years is a long time to make an impact in the lives of transplant survivors around the world. In honor of this milestone, Gift of Life Transplant House has events planned for nearly every month in 2019. In July, the 35th Annual Golf Tournament will be held at Rochester Golf and Country Club. Gift of Life Transplant House will cap off the year with a special celebration planned for Dec. 10, 2019, the official anniversary date. For more information about Gift of Life Transplant House and the numerous exciting events planned for 2019, visit gift-of-life.org/ calendar-events. Jessica Amos, a native of Owatonna, has been a resident of Rochester, MN since 1991. After completing Cosmetology training in 1993, she was employed at Kathleen’s on 2nd . Her training and mentorship from owner, Kathleen Yennie and manager, Sally McGovern was pivotal in her success as a local stylist, mentor, and business owner. In 2000, she wanted to share her passion for the industry and opened Hair Studio 52 at T J Maxx plaza. With needing to expand, she relocated the salon in 2004 to its current location on Superior Drive NW. The beauty industry is ever-changing, so Jessica and her team are continually involved in advanced training, both in-salon and around the country. The need to stay current in fashion/beauty trends and current in trade-business trends are a top priority of the team. “There is still a stigma that becoming a hair dresser will not allow one to be successful. I am here to educate and coach my staff so that they can prove otherwise.” It is her mission to have a team that enjoys coming to work, exceeds the expectations of their guests, and are able to support themselves financially. Jessica believes that she is very fortunate to be able to use her talents and abilities to have a career in something that she truly loves to do and to be a trusted part of so many people’s lives. The connection she has been able to have with clients and staff over the past 26 years is what success feels like.

TRAVEL

WIFE, MOTHER AND ARTIST STEPHANIE KUGLIN FINDS HER CALLING AT THE POTTERY WHEEL BY JOY BLEWETT

TRAVEL TO SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA AND YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF IN HISTORIC BLUFF COUNTRY WHERE BEAUTIFUL ROLLING HILLS SURROUND SMALL QUAINT TOWNS. Venture there the weekend of April 26-28 and a host of artists will be opening up their studios for a tour showcasing their artwork. This month’s Women in Arts column features Rochester ceramic artist Stephanie Kuglin, who will be part of the Bluff Country Studio Art Tour, representing Hilltop Clay at Lanesboro Community Center.

INSPIRATION For over a year, Kuglin has been building her own pottery studio within her home located at the top of a hill in Rochester, thus the business name Hilltop Clay. Her pottery wheel sits in front of a large window: inspiration for an artist. Inspired by Heesoo Ceramics in Montana, Kuglin experiments with glazes, seeing what happens when they heat together in the kiln where magical things can take place. From rice paper and laser transfers to using new tools like a slab roller, she welcomes all this new path entails, even the possibility of

growing by wordof-mouth, as well as social media. She is excited to try new things and keeps broadening her skills and knowledge. teaching it to someone else in the future. Her advice to Rochester Women magazine readers is, “You are never too old to start something new.” Pottery is another interest tied to the many she has of working with her hands, giving function and purpose to something innate. Hilltop pottery is experimental but functional. From plates to mugs, Kuglin finds that pottery is a practice of patience with both failure and success. As a visual thinker, her process is diving right in, working with mistakes and learning through the process. “It doesn’t have to be perfect,” she advises. "It can be messy first, then figure it out later. Don’t wait until it’s perfect. Failure is only when you quit.”

NATURE Kuglin never envisioned herself starting her own pottery business; however, looking back she can see where she always possessed an entrepreneurial spirit. As the oldest child in a single-mother family, a natural inclination to take care of things, do things herself and contribute to the whole developed inside her. As a child she would look for pretty rocks to sell to people, and she built her own candy store in a dresser drawer for the neighborhood kids. Now as an adult, living a self-supporting life is important to Kuglin through gardening and raising animals for food. Additionally, Kuglin has embraced the challenges of business ownership and is walking through them fearlessly. From following the leads provided by others, she has participated in the farmers markets and pop-up markets, and is accepting custom orders from her website. Her business is

NURTURE Kuglin is a wife, mother to three and now a working artist. When I asked her about balancing all these things in everyday life she contemplated, “Balance is a nice idea, but isn’t something that can done every day. Balance comes in chunks of time. For example, this chunk of time we’re going to have easy meals so mom can focus and get work done for a pottery show coming up or an order that’s due. Then we’ve got some slow time, let’s do some family stuff, cook some meals together, go do something fun.” Even with this idea of chunking life balance, it appears Kuglin has found a good balance, even in the everyday. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Mother Daughter BONDING EXPERIENCE THE PASSION TEST BY LUANN BUECHLER

EIGHT YEARS AGO, I HOSTED A ONE-DAY CONFERENCE FEATURING JANET BRAY ATTWOOD, CO-AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BOOK, “THE PASSION TEST.” My daughter, just 16 years old at the time, was helping me with the event. Being her sweet self, she asked Janet how she could serve her. Janet, in turn, asked my daughter, Ashley Hallett, to sit down so she could practice her process. My daughter got a 45-minute coaching session with Janet Bray Attwood who invited her to become a certified facilitator for Passion Test for Kids & Teens.

interact with our peers. There were only three teenagers in a course of 40 adults. The teenagers were so powerful that the adults were stepping up their game, getting over their fears of public speaking and sharing more deeply. If these young adults could do this work and present in front of a room full of people, we surely could too. We do a lot of appreciation and recognition of one another in these courses. At one of those moments, my daughter stood up and in front of the whole room and said, “Thanks, Mom, for getting me this message at 16, instead of waiting until I am 40 or 50, like the rest of you.” We laughed and we cried together, it was so poignant. By the end of this training, I knew the Passion Test was something I wanted to share with the world, because I wanted to live the philosophy, every day, of following my passions. Throughout her high school years, Ashley was a counselor to her friends and used the philosophies she learned at training. She is now 25 years old, has a master’s degree in counseling and is in private practice in the Twin Cities. She uses the Passion Test process where appropriate with her clients.

ASHLEY'S PERSPECTIVE nn Buechler.

Janet Atwood and LuA

If you have experienced a 16-year-old in your life, you know most often Mom is the dumbest person on the planet from their perspective. So, it occurred to me, what a great bonding experience it could be for the two of us to go through personal development training like this together.

TRANSFORMATION HAPPENS During the four-day certification training, we spent every day together, working on assignments and watching each other 54

“Going through the Passion Test at a young age taught me that prioritizing myself is healthy, being intentional in life is necessary and, most importantly, dedicating my life to something I am passionate about is perhaps the single most empowering choice I could make for my future,” shares Ashley. She explains that being at an event almost exclusively with older adults provided her a unique perspective that she could have ended up as an adult seeking answers and learning (late) to prioritize her happiness. She thought, “Limiting the number of years in which I was actually able to live my passions is scary!” This helped create a sense of urgency for her to do it then and be better for it later. “I think the Passion Test process is helpful

for mothers and daughters to experience together because it promotes vulnerability, authenticity and empowerment. What great qualities for a mother to model, prioritizing herself for her daughter. It truly helped me learn the importance of valuing myself,” says Ashley.

her daughter Ashley

EXPERIENCE THE PASSION TEST Over the eight years I have been sharing this work in our community I have worked with men, women, moms and teens as well as whole families. The communication that opens up between parents and children is amazing. Ashley and I are excited to be presenting together as a part of the Mother <–> Daughter retreat Rochester Women magazine is hosting May 10-11, 2019 at Assisi Heights Spirituality Center in Rochester. This experience will help women bond with their daughters and change lives by opening up their minds and hearts to one another. By the way, there is no test. We hope to meet you there. LuAnn Buechler is a certified facilitator of the Passion Test and Passion Test for Business. She will be facilitating the Passion Test at SMILE Leadership Summit (For Parents & Teens), April 12-13, 2019 at Elks Club, Rochester. www.SMILESummits.com.
