LISA SCHNEIDER Owner & Chief Creative Officer Canvas & Chardonnay 317 S. Broadway Rochester, MN 55904

507-258-4268

CANVAS & CHARDONNAY Lisa Schneider grew up in a unique and creative community in Colorado and has retained an affinity for artistic expression as well as a flair for fun. As owner and chief creative officer of Canvas & Chardonnay, Lisa delights in creating a community gathering place for people to try their hand at painting while sharing the experience with their fellow painters. Canvas & Chardonnay emphasizes FUN: Patrons can relax and let go of their cares while sipping on wine or beer and focus on putting paintbrush to canvas. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by their entertaining staff, the ambiance of their art-laden studio setting and the energetic downtown vibe. Describing Canvas & Chardonnay’s inception, Lisa shares, “There’s not always a lot to do in Rochester for entertainment, and I had a strong feeling that this concept would do well here. I’ve always been a bit of a risk taker, so I went for it! Three short months after the idea first arose in 2012, we were open and having our first class! Everything in those three months just fell into place, like kismet—especially the location that we are in. This old building was built in 1800, and we just love it, ghosts and all.” Indeed, Canvas & Chardonnay was received well by the community: They currently have six painting class instructors and can host up to 55 painters in the studio at one time. Lisa Schneider especially loves it when ladies bring their husbands along for an evening of painting at Canvas & Chardonnay. She says, “The guys arrive with this look on their face that says, ‘There’s a million things I’d rather be doing.’” Laughing, she adds, “But by the end of the night they’ve had so much fun they are saying, ‘When are we coming back?’” While Canvas & Chardonnay has many loyal local clients who paint just about every month, they are also fortunate to entertain many folks from out of town who are visiting Mayo Clinic and looking for something entertaining to do while they are here in Rochester. A more recent option, Canvas & Chardonnay now offers “To Go” parties! Most painters think it’s more enjoyable to paint in the studio; however, sometimes painters have a special occasion and would prefer the art studio travel to them. Lisa enthusiastically shares, “Whatever works for our clients, works for us!” While the word “chardonnay” is part of her business’s name, Lisa reveals, “People are usually surprised to learn that chardonnay is probably the least popular wine we sell. The most popular by far is moscato, which is a sweet, easy to drink wine. Plus, we always have a good variety of beer for our non-wine enthusiasts.” Canvas & Chardonnay is not your typical art studio! They also have a small boutique on-site where they feature the wares of local crafters and artists. Currently, they’re featuring Cream & Sugar Candle Co., which is a local candle maker that makes high quality soy candles in charming old tea-cups. Previously, Canvas & Chardonnay has featured unique felt art by Amarama Art, wood pieces by Worker Bee Wood, silverware jewelry by Pork Chop Fork Shop, handmade soap from Geek Soaps by Natalie, and many others. Of Rochester and Canvas & Chardonnay, Lisa says, “We really do have a vibrant art culture here in Rochester—if you know where to look—and we try to do our part in supporting it and attracting more people to experience art.”

Rochester’s original hot spot for painting, sipping and having FUN!

I have been thinking about what it was like 18 years ago when I started Rochester Women magazine, what has changed and what has stayed the same. Rochester Women magazine’s mission remains the same: Help area women connect with each other and the community. However, as a result of taking the Passion Test several times, we have redefined our purpose: Empower women to live passionately. You (our readers) and the world we live in have changed. The population of Rochester has increased by more than 25,500 since 2000.* The median age in Rochester has increased from 34.3 in 2000 to 35.4. There are now 32.6 percent more housing units in Rochester, and 44 percent of them have children under 18. In 2000 there were 2,883 female householders with no husband present. In 2017, there were 4,076 female householders, 66 percent with own children under the age of 18. Of the adult (over 18 years) population, 47.9 percent (40,438) are male and 52.1 percent (43,922) are female. The African-American (8 percent) and Asian (9 percent) populations are greater in Rochester now than in 2000; although White (of European descent) still make up the majority (84 percent) of the population. Our community has been trying to become more inclusive, compassionate and welcoming as the population changes in ethnicity. We are now more connected through technology than ever. RWmagazine.com has been making online connections since 2000 and was redesigned in 2011 to include our Facebook feed. We update RWmagazine.com with new content from each issue, which draws more than 2,000 viewers per bimonthly cycle. In addition, we now have 2,314 (and growing) Facebook followers. Like and follow Rochester Women on Facebook for more information and event invitations. I started Rochester Women magazine as a sole proprietor in 2000. In 2002, I partnered with Doug Solinger and began printing with his company, Midwest Litho. In 2017, I became the sole proprietor of Women Communications, L.L.C. DBA Rochester Women magazine again. I am proud to be a business owner. With all of the challenges, instability and risk comes pride and joy, creative opportunities, flexibility and great connections. I am grateful that Rochester businesses support this publication and our mission. You may have noticed the women in business on the cover of this issue of Rochester Women magazine March/April 2018 issue, because this issue includes Rochester Women’s Business & Resource Directory. Look for the advertorials (mini articles) throughout this issue and the Business Listings (pages 14-17) and nonprofit Resource Listings (pages 33-40). Hold on to this issue to refer back to throughout the year. Over 18 years, we have published more than 100 issues, sponsored numerous events for women, listened, learned and laughed together. In 2018, Rochester Women magazine is ready to take on more adventures with you! Sincerely,

BY EMILY WATKINS PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRACEY MCGUIRE PHOTOGRAPHY

F

AYE WENDLAND HAS MANY MANTRAS. ONE IS “UNCOMFORTABLE IS A GROWTH OPPORTUNITY,” A CONCEPT SHE IS LEANING INTO THESE DAYS. WENDLAND IS RETIRING FROM A 42-YEAR CAREER AS AN RN WITH MAYO CLINIC AND DECIDING HOW TO USE HER TIME AND TALENTS.

AN EXCEPTIONAL WOMAN Rochester Women magazine received a nomination from Wendland’s co-worker Heidi Seaberg, who says, “Faye is an exceptional woman. She has been instrumental in starting many groups and programs in our community that support people living with mental health disorders. She has volunteered thousands of hours over the years, sharing her gifts freely and happily.” Wendland has a strong faith that for a long time gave her a “sense that if you’re spiritually together, you shouldn’t have mental illness.” Yet she saw family and friends suffering, and so she felt called to find meaningful ways to help them.

ADDRESSING ISSUES TO OVERCOME THEM Wendland started Journey of Hope, a group for family and loved ones of those suffering from mental illness. She also started Compassion Counseling Center, which offers free counseling to those who need it. Her newest project is a faith-based support group for those living with mental health disorders. Her work mentoring families and individuals has given her “riches.” She says, “Out of your mess comes your message,” as she helps people address their hurts and overcome them. The concept of restoration

has been an important one in her life. “Emotions buried never die,” she says, and she values relationships where truth is told freely.

A PROFESSIONAL LEGACY “Her amazing gifts extend into her work realm as well,” writes Seaberg. “She has been the key player in launching many nurse-based programs in her career and is the biggest advocate for nursing as a profession. She has blessed numerous patients over the years by her care and compassion. Faye has served as mentor and encourager to her fellow nurses, and we are sincerely grateful and honored to call her friend.” At Mayo Clinic, Wendland started a triage center and worked as a case manager for recovering addicts. She developed a program for those with depression, helping to write a workbook for Mayo Clinic using real life stories of patients. She was a wellness coach back before it was all the rage, focusing on the idea of taking care of the whole person.

EXERCISE FOR LIFE Exercise is a big part of Wendland’s life. She has been running with her husband since 1979, an activity that has helped keep their relationship strong. When she began running she was

overweight, and her goal each day was to run the same or a little bit more than the day before. She now uses her running time to “sort things out” and pray. She says, “I try to do something new every year.” She sets “personal health goals such as “riding my age in miles on a bicycle on my birthday, running in two races yearly and completing five triathlons by age 60. I am hoping to still be running when I am 70.”

THE NEXT PHASE As she transitions away from a busy work life, she is saying “no” as she sorts through her options. She is “sleeping in” until 6 or 6:30 a.m. these days. She anticipates traveling to California and New York to spend time with her daughters and her two new granddaughters. She says, “I just want to live well and have a purpose.” As someone who didn’t feel beautiful for a long time because of her weight, Wendland realizes that “beauty is so much more” than what we see. She says, “There’s always something to be grateful for.” She also understands the power of the mind: “What you think is how you feel.” Rochester Women magazine congratulates Faye Wendland on her retirement. We encourage our readers (you) to nominate yourself or someone else who deserves to feel beautiful. Emily Watkins is a writer and editor. RWmagazine.com March/April 2018 11

more women on the move cover story

RUNNING FOR THE GREATER GOOD BY ANNA RICHEY

Jamie Mahlberg is running for House District 25A.

I

T TAKES COURAGE TO OPEN YOUR LIFE TO PUBLIC SCRUTINY WHEN RUNNING FOR PUBLIC OFFICE. SOME PEOPLE SPEND YEARS BUILDING A RESUME, KNOWING THEY’LL STEP INTO A LEADERSHIP ROLE AT SOME POINT. SOME ARE INSPIRED BY JUST A SINGLE EVENT. FOR SOME, THE IDEA DOESN’T OCCUR TO THEM UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE SUGGESTS IT, AND THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR WOMEN.

Research has shown that women are significantly less likely to be encouraged to run for office than men. Self-doubt often plagues women, and despite shifting traditional gender roles, women still tend to take on a greater share of domestic management, making it more difficult for women to envision what would happen to their families through a campaign and an elected position.

Photography by Kim Wilson

BRINGING WOMEN TO THE TABLE As the population of southeast Minnesota grows, serious issues like affordable housing, availability of child care and living-wage jobs need to be addressed. According to Olmsted County data, 24 percent of households with a female single parent are below the poverty level, and that number grows to 34 percent when there are children in the home under the age of 5. Women must be at the table to discuss economic growth, transportation, infrastructure investment, parks and public space and other important political issues. In southeast Minnesota, there are incredible women who have stepped forward, dedicating their time and making sacrifices to ensure that the perspective of women is present in discussions about important issues in our community. They serve on city councils, school boards and

at the state Legislature and lead organizations, commissions and other boards. However, women are still vastly underrepresented.

INSPIRED TO STEP FORWARD Jamie Mahlberg, candidate for House District 25A, is a political newcomer. She says, “The most encouraging part of my campaign so far has been the support of women. Women initially encouraged me to run. Individual women have stepped up to volunteer and donate, and womenled organizations have provided some of the best guidance I’ve had.” Mahlberg’s mantra is: “Show Up. Be Kind.” Her openness to new experiences has resulted in her serving on a city commission as well as building new relationships within diverse groups in the community. She adds, “The moral of this story is that all you often need to do is ask directly or through your social network and doors will open.” An educator at Rochester Community and Technical College for over 10 years, Mahlberg is well-networked and understands the people who make up the Rochester area. As she notes, “I witness every day that policy decisions affect people. I’ve built relationships with students and friends who won’t leave the country for fear of not getting back in. I’ve helped students explore options when a $100 barrier keeps them from continuing their education.”

SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE We must encourage and support women like Mahlberg who are dedicating themselves to serving people so that their contributions aren’t taken for granted or lost in the male-dominated narrative in politics. Let’s follow Jamie’s advice, and reach out to our networks to encourage more women to share their talents and perspectives to make the community better. Then let’s make sure we support them. nna Richey is the Southern MN A regional manager for conservation, chair of the Rochester Energy Commission and co-chair of More Women on the Move. The mission of More Women on the Move is to host networking opportunities and provide the training and tools necessary to accomplish that goal. Join us at the following events. BRENNAN FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC In 1997, Dr. Melissa was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. After years of medications and complications (kidney disease, arthritis, sun sensitivity, butterfly rash, and extreme fatigue), she was motivated to find a more natural approach to treating her disease. Becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic in 2004 started her on the road to a healthier, drug-free lifestyle. Today, Dr. Melissa’s lupus is in remission. She attributes her health to Chiropractic, Acupuncture, a Whole Food Diet, and Nutritional Supplements. She has taken what most consider an “unfortunate disease of lupus” and turned it into a blessing and opportunity to help others seek more natural ways to improve and maintain their health for a lifetime.

UNIQUE WOMEN, UNIQUE NEEDS The truth is that we are different at different ages, and we all have unique experiences. A teenager has a completely different set of concerns than an 80-year-old. But neither one is better or worse than the other. Yes, the 80-year-old has had more years to experience things, but that doesn’t mean that she necessarily has had a wider variety of experience than an 18-year-old. For example, a teenager in a war-torn country who may have seen friends and family die at the hands of a rebel group, will have a different understanding of life than an 80-year-old who has lived a sheltered life and never traveled outside of her state. Instead of focusing just on age, let’s work on providing women with things that will help them in their current situation at their current age. For example, housing and medical care are serious issues that need our attention. There is a wide range of financial capability within and across age groups. Additionally, we have different needs when it comes to nutrition, exercise and skincare as we age.

AGING GRACEFULLY LOVING YOURSELF AT ANY AGE BY EMILY WATKINS

“Y

OU LOOK GREAT FOR YOUR AGE.” HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF A STATEMENT LIKE THIS? WE’VE ALL GOTTEN USED TO HEARING THIS COMMON “COMPLIMENT.” THE TRUTH IS THAT YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL AT ANY AGE. I recently saw a video on Facebook that stuck with me. It was posted on comedian Amy Poehler’s page and was produced by AARP. The video showed a group of women gathered around a table talking about how they look at their age and how it can lead to others making generalizations about them. One woman with gray hair noted that at age 40, people often mistook her for someone much older. Another mentioned that when her mother was told, “You look great for your age,” she replied, "No matter what, I look good for my age. Whether I am skinny (or) I am fat. Whether I’m wrinkled, whether I’m gray!"

HIDDEN MESSAGES Saying “You look great for your age” usually means you look younger than you are and can be taken as a compliment. However, statements like, 22 March/April 2018 RWmagazine.com

“You may be getting a bit too old to be able to handle a job like that” can be hurtful. I remember asking my parents questions and being told, “We’ll tell you when you’re older.” That made me feel like I wasn’t worthy of knowing something. These comments usually conceal discomfort about or unwillingness to delve into a heavy topic. They may even mask unfounded prejudices. Some comments are sexist, harassing or inappropriate and others undervalue someone’s skills. One local woman who graduated early from high school says, “My grades were never enough to speak for my competency. There is a constant state of having to prove myself.” Another woman says, “Co-workers and clients grossly underestimate my experience because I appear younger than my age.”

STAY TUNED In future issues, Rochester Women magazine will delve deeper into topics that affect women of different ages in different ways. Topics will range from careers and financial concerns to makeup and shopping. In the meantime, let’s get social! AARP has a hashtag that they use to help people rethink aging. Share what’s ageless about you on our Facebook page. Let’s focus on being grateful for all the things that we have, whatever our age.

INE AND CHOCOLATE. CHAMPAGNE AND STRAWBERRIES. RIESLING AND CHEESECAKE? WANT TO HAVE YOUR DESSERT AND DRINK IT TOO? THINK BEYOND THE STANDARD PAIRINGS FOR AN AMAZING WAY TO END A MEAL OR JUST ENJOY A TREAT.

SHARING IS CARING One of my favorite things in life has been enjoying a long meal around a table in France. So when I hosted my wine tasting group recently, I planned a typical French meal. Our discovery of great cheeses paired with cabernet sauvignon appeared in the January/February 2018 issue of Rochester Women magazine. On an extended trip to France last summer, a friend taught me how to make authentic French mousse au chocolat. This elegant, make-ahead dessert with just four ingredients is a knock-out option for hosts who don’t like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen while their guests are present. It was ideal to serve at this gathering, especially since cabernet sauvignon is known for its ability to complement chocolate.

JUST DESSERTS When preparing to write this article, I assumed that those people I interviewed would jump to the red wine and chocolate recommendation. Interestingly, I got some unique and exciting options for combinations. Steve Shanahan, sommelier at Andy’s Liquor gave me the most freeing advice when I asked about good wines to serve with desserts. He said, “A lot of people put too much emphasis on pairing sometimes. The best information I have

Thank you Chocolaterie Stam in downtown Rochester for donating custom Fleur de Lys chocolates. We enjoyed both milk and dark chocolates as a sort of second dessert after our mousse au chocolat.

learned is if you like a certain food and you like a certain wine, put them together.” He says there are some dos and don’ts, though. “If a food is salty, don’t match it with a full-body cabernet. But when it comes to chocolate and desserts, the sky’s the limit. You literally can pair anything.”

SPRING PAIRINGS With spring in the air, we’ll start thinking about lighter desserts, such as carrot cake, as well as lighter wines. Shanahan recommends wines that are “not too overly sweet, like a French Vouvray.” Three other wines to try with desserts this spring are Champagne, ice wine and moscato.

Shanahan advises staying “true to the sweetness level. The sweeter the dessert, the sweeter the wine.” He suggests, “Try a moscato d’Asti or Sauternes from France.” If the sparkling wine is a demi sec, serve it with a less sweet dessert. “Match the fragility of the bubbles,” with a lighter dessert. Lynette Nash at the Chocolate Shoppe in Mantorville and I had a conversation about pairing wine with desserts. She sells delicious caramel apples all year long. I asked Shanahan what to drink with that. He says, “I’d open three different styles of wine to try including a good moscato because you get a lot of apple flavor with that.” RWmagazine.com March/April 2018 25

CHOCOLATE AND WINE, A CLASSIC COMBINATION

I asked Shanahan for a good pairing to accompany the chocolate mousse at my French dinner. He recommends, “A good tawny port.” At the Wines of the World event every March, Andy’s Liquor presents different flavors of chocolate with different styles of port. One style is a ruby port, which is young. Shanahan says, “They stop the fermentation early, so it retains the sweetness that helps it pair well with chocolates.” Nash has provided chocolates for the annual Small Dog Rescue Wine & Chocolate Spectacular for the past four years, and she says, “People tend to prefer dark chocolate with wines.” According to Nash, deeper red wines offset the sweetness of desserts well. “Wine should be smooth and so should chocolate, and you don’t need a lot of either to make it feel like you’ve had a nice dessert.” For a home tasting, you can find many options at the Chocolate Shoppe. Nash explains, “We have pecan and cashew turtles, and chocolatecovered pretzel rods that you could put together in a nice combination to take to a wine tasting.” She says that customers love drinking wine with her special toffee bark, which is chocolate filled with toffee bits. Another popular option is her chocolate truffles, which have a dark chocolate interior with either a light or dark chocolate exterior. You’ll find chocolate Easter bunnies on her shelves these days, and you can order them and anything else online and have it sent to you. You can have your chocolate and drink it too. Shanahan says that, similar to Bailey’s Irish Cream, chocolate wines, which are found in the cordials section, are made with wine instead of whiskey. Ness says while you can find chocolate wines that don’t have lots of artificial flavors in them, you should read the ingredient list carefully.

YOU CAN’T GO WRONG If you’d rather have someone else do the work, head to Mantorville and cap off your evening at the Hubbell House. Alaina Pappas recommends their homemade bread pudding and caramel sauce with a pinot gris, their French silk dessert with a pinot noir or their seven-layer chocolate cake with their red blend. Go forth and enjoy your dessert and wine, but do it your way. Nash says, “Whether it is the proper way, it’s ultimately people’s taste buds.” Shanahan agrees, saying, “Don’t get frustrated or make it too big of a deal. Explore and have fun!” Mousse au chocolat recipe translated and adapted from Marmiton.org. 2 WHAT MOTIVATES THREE WOMEN RESTAURATEURS

Behind-the-Scenes FROM

TO FRONT OF

S

House

BY TORI UTLEY · PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAWN SANBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

ome of the best moments in life happen around the dinner table. Whether in the comfort of our own home or at one of our favorite eateries, these conversations, reunions and celebrations are formative—and some become memories that last a lifetime. For three restaurateurs, this is exactly the kind of experience they’re bringing to our community—experiences that are people-centric, memorable and unique to the heartbeat of Rochester.

Rochester Restaurant Scene Rochester’s dining scene has continued to grow, steadily bringing in new talent, tastes and experiences. Women are leading the charge as owners, managers, servers, bartenders, bakers, chefs and behind-the-scenes gurus making it all happen. Whether it’s managing staff or thinking up new menu creations, it’s apparent that women play a valuable role in the restaurant industry. For a viable career opportunity with variety and excitement, the dining scene is an exciting way for women to thrive. Meet three women from local restaurants and learn what inspires them to stay healthy and hustle in an industry that never sleeps.

A NOTE FROM OUR EDITOR

The word restaurateur was used rather than restauranteur: In doing just a bit of research, it looks like they’re both used, but the sites that I looked at said that often people will think that ’restauranteur’ is a mistake. In French, it’s ‘restaurateur.’ ~ Emily Watkins

Heather Jacobson MR. PIZZA NORTH

Heather Jacobson 28 March/April 2018 RWmagazine.com

Any Rochester native knows of Mr. Pizza–the family-owned restaurant that’s been a local staple since 1963. Heather Jacobson is a family member, manager and baker at Mr. Pizza North, a role she’s held for the past 12 years. According to Jacobson, who was a server in the family business growing up, cooking and baking had always been a passion of hers. After attending Le Cordon Bleu with her brother, she ventured to France for an externship and traveled across Europe learning new baking and cooking techniques she would later bring to Rochester. In the late 2000s, alongside her father and brother, Jacobson helped open a second Mr. Pizza location–Mr. Pizza North–with an expanded menu where she has since served as the lead baker. According to Jacobson, watching people enjoy her creations is something that keeps her coming to work every day. “There’s a lot of love in what we do, and seeing people

come back and enjoy what we’re creating keeps me motivated and inspired to try new things,” she says. Working in such a busy environment isn’t without challenges, Jacobson says. It’s important to remember that behind every favorite eatery is a group of people trying to create the best food possible, but it’s not always perfect. “In an industry as fast-paced as this, it’s important to realize we’re still human and mistakes happen,” she says. “Like any good restaurant, our goal is to provide a great experience and if a mistake has been made, we’ll work hard to fix it.” Jacobson, a wife and mother of two, says work-life balance is often a challenge. She makes her family a priority, despite the long hours. “Restaurant hours can be challenging, but I would still rather be doing this than anything else,” she says.

1 Natalie Victoria VICTORIA’S RISTORANTE AND WINE BAR

Natalie Victoria

Natalie Victoria owns Victoria’s with her husband. The duo, who originally got their start in Wisconsin, came to Rochester in the 90s. Victoria says the restaurant industry wasn’t on her radar before meeting her husband, but today, she says it’s an industry she loves working in. According to Victoria, there have been many challenges in the establishment’s more than 20 years in business. “In the beginning, you’re worried about resources and becoming profitable,” she says. “But over time, you’re concerned about staying on the cutting edge and giving customers a fresh, unique experience.” While the challenges can be difficult, Victoria shares that it’s the lessons learned that have shaped the business to become what it is today. While the joys of the job are many, according to Victoria, her favorite part of the business is the people–a view shared by Jacobson and Foster.

“We meet so many people here and it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of this industry. Everyone has a story and we’re grateful to be a part of it,” she says, speaking of the restaurant’s unique clientele of locals, visitors and Mayo Clinic patients. “We have the best employees,” she says. “And I know everyone says that, but there’s just something special about our people. They work so hard and I’m proud to work next to them.” Victoria says it can be easy to get overworked. For her, the key has been finding balance and enjoying moments with her family whenever she can. “The longer I’m in this business, the more I appreciate the simple things, like sleep and quiet time at home with my family,” says Victoria. “It’s not always a glamorous life, but at the end of the day, it’s all worth it.”

Gina Foster NOVA RESTAURANT GROUP

Gina Foster

Gina Foster is the director of brand and marketing for Nova Restaurant Group. With locations across Minnesota, the Nova Restaurant Group has brought local dining favorites including Pescara, Terza, La Vetta and Chester’s to Rochester. According to Foster, who joined the family-owned company in 2012 after a long career in corporate marketing and advertising, her favorite thing about the business is the people–both the guests and the staff. “The passion of the people working in our restaurants is inspiring,” she says. “The passion they have for our customers, the love they have for their work and the way they deliver a great experience day in and day out is what keeps me going–and keeps us all going.” According to Foster, one of the challenges of her job has been learning to say no. For ambitious people working in such a fast-paced

industry, it’s easy to take on too much. Between the marketing needs of each business and new opportunities that emerge each day, her greatest lesson has been learning to strike a healthy worklife balance, whether it means 15 minutes of meditation, hitting the gym or taking a vacation. “As much as I’m motivated to grow each brand and restaurant, it’s important to remember you can’t do it all and you need boundaries,” she says. “The key is taking time for yourself so you can be your best on the job.” All she needs to do to get energized is walk into one of the Nova Group’s establishments. “You walk into a restaurant and sense the energy and excitement and it motivates you,” she says. “I want people to know how much our servers care and how hard they work to create a memorable experience. We truly care about our guests more than anything else.”

Remembering to Reenergize For Victoria, Foster and Jacobson, the rewards of the industry far outweigh the challenges of such fast-paced, demanding work. With intentional effort to pursue self-care, they reenergize for their work. “It’s like they tell you on an airplane–put on

your own oxygen mask first. You won’t be able to take care of everything or everyone else if you’re not taking care of yourself first,” says Foster. “Don’t try to be perfect all the time. You’re human, you’re going to make mistakes. At the end of the day, in this business it’s

important to work hard, take care of yourself and remember the humanity of others.” Tori Utley is a Rochester-based writer and entrepreneur. RWmagazine.com March/April 2018 29

Women in Philanthropy DEDICATED TO HELPING OTHERS

BY EMILY WATKINS

I

N TALKING WITH SOME OF THE BEST PROFESSIONAL FUNDRAISERS IN ROCHESTER, THEY ALL MENTION THEIR SERENDIPITOUS PATHS TO THEIR PROFESSION, THEIR PASSION FOR THEIR ORGANIZATION AND ITS MISSION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS WITH DONORS. MEET SOME AMAZING AND GRACIOUS WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPY.

THE JOURNEY TO GIVING Jennifer Woodford, president of Rochester Area Foundation (RAF), says that as part of her college major she was required to do a practicum. She ended up at a nonprofit, working with a major company sponsor, where she continued to work during college. Fast-forward to her arrival in Rochester, as the executive director of Channel One Food Bank. Stacey Vanden Heuvel is vice president of marketing and philanthropy for Olmsted Medical Center. Her education includes business, accounting, economics and foreign language as well as a family history of giving. She earned a master’s degree in philanthropy and development from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota with a focus on creating a culture that fosters giving. Cheryl Hadaway, chief development officer and chair of the Department of Development at Mayo Clinic, has been serving in her current position for six years and working in fundraising at Mayo for 23 years. She says her

professional journey has been “serendipitous.” Her undergraduate degree is in human resource management, and she also has a master’s degree in development and philanthropy. She says many people “fall into the profession, and develop skills through experience, coaching and mentoring.”

A PASSION FOR THE MISSION “You need to have passion for your organization otherwise it’s just a job,” Woodford says. One thing that she loves about philanthropy is that everyone can participate, whether it’s giving millions or just a few dollars. At Channel One, Woodford repeatedly heard about the need in the community for affordable housing, transportation and quality, affordable child care. Through First Homes, a joint effort with RAF, she is working to make home ownership much more affordable. “If we can (provide) stable housing, (it can) make a difference in the family for generations.” Vanden Heuvel loves her job, which she views as a vocation, and thinks of it as “working

with people to help further their goals” as they align with the organization’s goals “to make the community better and serve others.”

AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Mary Ann Remick, a Rochester woman who donates to many causes, says that giving “has been a lifelong habit.” She and her husband, Jack, have focused on supporting educational causes “because we believe that is the key to making a difference in everyone’s life.” She advises women, “Start today, even though you may not think you can give a lot. What’s important is that you start giving and it becomes an ingrained part of your life. It’s good to be aware of others’ needs. All of us have been given talents and abilities, and we’re here on this earth to share what we have to make a difference for someone else.” Woodford says, “Everybody can make a difference,” and that each gift, no matter how big, is appreciated. She encourages more women, especially younger women to become involved in philanthropy. To learn more about the Association of Fundraising Professionals, go to afpmnsouthern.afpnet.org. Winona State University Expands to Downtown Rochester BY BOB FREUND

T

HE WHITE STONE STEPS TO THE TOP FLOOR OF THE RIVERSIDE BUILDING SHOW THE WEAR FROM COUNTLESS SHOES OVER DECADES. THE STEPS ARE SMOOTH, AND A BIT BOWED IN PLACES, REFLECTING THE LONG HISTORY OF THE LARGE BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN ROCHESTER.

The latest footsteps now come from hundreds of students from Winona State University who climb the staircase to the third floor regularly. “It’s kind of a coincidence,” says Jeanine E. Gangeness, associate vice president and dean of Winona State University’s School of Graduate Studies. “(Both) the building and Winona State University Rochester have been here for 100 years.”

CONTEMPORARY PLACE At the top of the stairs, students are greeted with a modern skyline of Rochester drawn in bright purple, the school’s color. They 42 March/April 2018 RWmagazine.com

circulate through large, open spaces and meet professors in glass-enclosed offices. There’s a soundproofed studio for podcasting. It has an ingrained history, but WSU-Rochester’s center atop the Riverside Building today is an engaging contemporary place. When WSU remodeled the third floor in late summer and fall of 2016, Gangeness and the designers opened up the space. Now you can look through most walls; many are glass. In fact, “You can stand at the front desk and you can see actually (out the windows) all the way across the street,” says Travis Lange, manager of the project for general contractor Alvin E. Benike,

Inc. and an architect by profession. Adding to the airy feel of the 6,300-square-foot space is an overhead skylight that beams into an atrium in the center of the building. “The remodeling is designed to give students and faculty choices about how and where to do their work,” says Kathy Goodman of Schmidt Goodman Office Products, which supplied furnishings.

WSU-ROCHESTER The new Riverside site, which opened to students for the spring term early in 2017, is one of two WSU campuses in Rochester. WSU selected the massive building largely because of convenient access for many students and for its location near Rochester’s core, Gangeness says. Winona State University teaches graduate courses in majors such as nursing and education at the Riverside Building, as well as a number of professional certificates and other adult learning programs. Many classes are scheduled for working adults. “You’ll see this place hopping after 5 at night,” says Gangeness, the top WSU administrator for Rochester.

BRINGING A MODERN FEEL TO THE HISTORIC RIVERSIDE BUILDING

1 WSU selected the massive building largely because of convenient access for many students and for its location near Rochester’s core. ~ Jeanine E. Gangeness EQUIPPED WITH TECHNOLOGY Faculty members essentially share a pool of five glass-enclosed offices, and there are a couple of similar workrooms set aside for students. Classes, group brainstorming sessions or even community meetings might fit into the “boardroom.” A 24-foot-long desk dominates the room, and it’s big enough for 18 chairs. The room is equipped for video conferencing, which allows students to join in from their own homes. They can ask questions and participate through an interactive, two-way feed. That remote access is a key feature built into the boardroom, the main classroom, and another smaller classroom in the WSU center, Gangeness says. On any day, perhaps half the class will be present on site, with the remainder logging in remotely. The technology is so important that WSU keeps a technician on duty during classes to troubleshoot any problems, she says.

past. The large ductwork for air handling was refurbished and painted white to brighten the large space. Even the air handling overhead works to give an open atmosphere around students and faculty. Lange, who previously worked as an architect for former third-floor tenant Holabird

& Root, says the open ductwork, glass walls and large spaces all work together: “It feels like it’s an active space. It’s got energy to it,” he says. Bob Freund is a Rochester-based writer and regular contributor to Rochester Women magazine.

MEETING AND SOLO SPACE The main classroom, which seats about 40, is equipped for flexibility. For example, its chairs are movable on rollers, which allows for quick switches from a lecture setting to small groups. Then, after the formal class ends, students might flow out into one of three small group areas where they can work on projects or brainstorm. Also available either for gathering or for solo study are two banks of high-top tables where students can sit on backless seats called “perching stools,” Goodman says. For real privacy, they can slip into a Brody WorkLounge, a personal pod with an ergonomic chair surrounded on three sides with a privacy screen. The chair also contains an adjustable table for a computer, plug outlets and a floating footrest. The cubicle is like a “little cocoon,” Goodman says. WSU-Rochester has two, and they are popular, Gangeness says.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION While the renovation created a thoroughly modern look, the renovation architect–Adam Ferrari, who has since moved out of state–also kept some reminders of Riverside’s historic

Handy Gal’s Guide to Home Maintenance

home protected by a well-maintained gutter and downspout system is invaluable as a defense against water damage or moisture intrusion in your home. Donna Wurl, of All Craft Exteriors, recommends having 3-inch by 4-inch commercial grade aluminum downspouts installed on your home. She says, “With the storms we’ve been getting lately, it helps keeping up with the amount of rainfall and helps keep the water away from the house.” She also adds that houses without gutters can experience deteriorating foundations and damaged siding. To manage rainwater properly, it’s important for water to have someplace to go, rather than into your basement. An underground drain tile system that carries water away from your home will help protect your home from a wet basement or a damaged foundation. Ryan Hegland, owner of Hegland’s Creative Landscapes says, “A great way to control rainwater is to turn a low, wet area in your yard into a rain garden.” Additionally, landscaping near your home’s foundation needs to slope away from the building—a minimum of 6 inches drop in grade within the first 10 feet—so the rainwater naturally cascades away from the structure.

SUMP PUMPS PROTECTION AGAINST WATER INTRUSION

WHAT YOU CAN DO THIS SPRING BY CINDY MENNENGA

S

PRINGTIME IS A GREAT TIME TO CONSIDER HOW WELL YOUR HOUSE IS EQUIPPED TO WAGE WAR AGAINST MOISTURE. THE SNOW THAT HAS KEPT US SHROUDED IN WHITE FOR THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS HAS BEGUN TO LOOSEN ITS GRIP, MELTING INTO RIVULETS OF WATER SCURRYING FROM THE ROOF AND SNOW BANKS LINING OUR DRIVEWAYS AND SIDEWALKS, IN SEARCH OF THE FASTEST ESCAPE ROUTE.

If you have a great moisture intrusion management system already in place, then you can sit back and welcome spring and all its attendant glories. However, in the event your moisture intrusion management system is not up to snuff, you may be taking a hold-your-breath-andwait-and-see approach. That tactic is tantamount to playing roulette.

DOWNSPOUTS AND RAINWATER MANAGEMENT When winter’s snow begins to melt quickly or there is a rain event that drops a large amount of rainwater in a short period of time, having your

Even with high-quality gutters and downspouts, drain tile and landscaping designed to direct water away from your home’s foundation, you could still experience a breach and water could enter your basement. A good way to protect yourself from this possibility is to install a highquality sump pump. This is not an area to cut corners: After all, once you have water coming into your basement, the sump pump is your last line of defense to help keep your home dry on the inside. Mark Nelson, owner of Service Pros Plumbing and Heating shares, “Better built sump pumps will typically last longer, and you want your sump pump to work when you need it to.” Indeed, for anyone who has a sump pump that runs nearly nonstop after a rain event, the sound of it discharging its contents is both troublesome and comforting at the same time. Troublesome because it’s always concerning when you know that there is water trying valiantly to enter your home, and comforting because you know the sump pump is doing its job and helping to keep your home dry.

PLANNING FOR RAINY DAYS Home maintenance is a learning experience; however, managing rainwater on the fly is not a fun or effective way to gain that experience. Implementing a home moisture intrusion management system is pretty straightforward and an important concern for all homeowners. Take steps now to be prepared in advance. It will help give you peace of mind and confidence when you hear those first big, fat juicy raindrops drip, drip dropping on your roof at the beginning of a downpour. indy Mennenga is a freelance writer and along with her C husband John, owns Conspectus Home Inspection Services, LLC based in Rochester. Raising Rochester SPRING BREAK OPTIONS THAT WON’T BUST THE BANK BY RENEE BERG

FINDING BIG FUN IN NATURE Pack some snacks and hit the road. No need to go far to find big fun in the outdoors. Head to Whitewater State Park in neighboring St. Charles, urges interpretive naturalist Sara Holger, and check out the flowers coming up. Grab a flower ID sheet at the visitor center and hit the park on your very own treasure hunt, finding a variety of flowers as you go. Hiking is another big hit at Whitewater in the spring, as is trout fishing and morel mushroom hunting. You can even help plant trees at Whitewater sometime in April. Check out the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website (dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/ whitewater). Even closer to home is Chester Woods Park near Eyota. “It’s a good time to get out and look at waterfowl if you’re into birds,” says Celeste Lewis, staff naturalist at Chester Woods. The lake 46 March/April 2018 RWmagazine.com

is 112 acres and the park itself is 1,330 acres, so there is plenty to discover here–and much of it often goes unseen. “Most people only see about 200 acres of the park. But if you cross the iron bridge, there is another thousand acres that is basically all preserved.” Bird feeding is another option at Chester Woods ,but it’s wise to reserve a spot ahead of time. If you want to camp, it’s also a good idea to reserve now. Call the park at 507-287-2624 or go on-line. (co.olmsted.mn.us/pw/parks/ chesterwoods).

GET JUMPING IN LA CROSSE Go a little farther to La Crosse, Wisconsin and visit Jump Start Adventure Park, a brand-new trampoline park that was converted from a large warehouse. There are trampolines, a ninja course and free fall jumps. Parents, please note: You can jump too, so wear your

workout clothes and squeeze in some cardio with your kids! Or head to the Children’s Museum of La Crosse where a brand-new climbing structure has been unveiled. It’s the state’s first ever unique climbing gym that’s also a work of art. Ever climbed on eyeballs before? No? Well, now you can.

GET HISTORICAL IN NORTHFIELD Northfield is another day trip option with plenty of history. Learn about the downfall of Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang at the Northfield Historical Society, where you can tour the original bank. If the weather is nice, head to Carleton College to walk around the school’s Japanese garden, which has been recognized as one of the best such displays outside of Japan. Try breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Tavern located in the Archer House. A fun lunch spot known for hoagies is Hogan Brothers. If you’re on the go, grab a cup of joe at Goodbye Blue

O SPRING BREAK TRAVEL PLANS? NO WORRIES, THERE ARE PLENTY OF REGIONAL OPTIONS. HERE ARE SOME CLOSE-TO-HOME IDEAS.

1 Monday Coffee House or the James Gang Coffeehouse in this quaint college town.

GET BIKING IN LANESBORO Another option is a day trip to famed Lanesboro, Minnesota. Rent bikes and head out on the Root River State Bike Trail or take an Amish Backroads Tour. Have your kiddos ever heard of, or seen, a telephone booth? Check that out at the Lanesboro History Museum. Enjoy an afternoon pick-me-up at the Granary, which serves ice cream, coffee, wine and beer. Home Sweet Home Cafe and Cakery, a brand new cafe, offers home-style lunches, pies, cookies and brownie and cakes by owner and pastry chef, Liz Mason. Near Lanesboro is the National Trout Center in Preston and the International Owl Center in Houston. Niagara Cave in Harmony offers underground tours.

STAYCATIONS ARE NICE TOO If staying in town is more your game, head to the Kahler Apache, where the water park is “obviously a great option for families,” says marketing Manager Matt Elliott. More indoor ideas include Rochester’s two climbing gyms, Prairie Walls and Roca. There is also a lot of buzz about Air Insanity, an indoor trampoline park set to open in 2018. Stay tuned for more information about that. With our own History Center of Olmsted County, family-friendly public library, Minnesota Children’s Museum, Quarry Hill Nature Center, and countless city parks to discover, who needs complicated and expensive spring break travel plans? Enjoy our local treasures. Renee Berg is a local freelancer who loves taking day trips to surrounding communities with her two teens.

Poetry in the Eye of the Poet FIVE APPROACHES TO THE WAY WE USE WORDS

BY JOY BLEWETT idea of slowing her poetry down and backing it with music, she was apprehensive. She doesn’t regret taking the risk because it developed her love for collaboration and performance through spoken word. Whitfield has created and performed original work in collaboration with Assisi Heights symposiums, Rochester Diversity Council and Arts Council, Faith Talk Show, local theaters, as well as many other events and poetry slams in Rochester. She has performed her work with accompanied music, film, dance and in costumes. As a trained journalist, Whitfield is also interested in storytelling. If she isn’t telling her story, she is telling another’s story. “Everyone has a great story to tell. Every type of experience, dreams and aspirations, hurts and regrets, vulnerabilities and moments of great beauty.” As a teacher, she encourages her students to tell the story that scares them, pushing them to take outside adventures to experience new things, meet new people, and do things they have never done before. These encounters and activities encourage their growth as writers and help them tackle their own stories with courage. Whitfield doesn’t shy away from controversial or difficult topics in her writing either. She has written about politics, human trafficking and human rights, diversity and inclusion and polarization in this country. Whitfield believes that, “Spoken word is a powerful tool to share a social or political message.” Whitfield and her children performed at the MN Renaissance Festival last year.

SPOKEN WORD

PERFORMANCE

The District Arts Board of STEM Academy is no stranger to how powerful the spoken word can be. With an award-winning and published team of spoken word poets, local communities are no stranger either to what these high school students can deliver onstage. Their resume of performance venues includes Augsburg College in Minneapolis, High School for Recording Arts in St Paul, Rotary Club in Golden Valley, and locally at Café Steam and Rochester Civic Theatre, participating in Women on Wednesday’s events and poetry slams. Over the past five years STEM Academy students Nasro, Ekhlas, Faiso, Omar, Najma, Amina, Nafiso, Osman, and Sagal have worked with poets through the nonprofit arts education organization, COMPAS, to build their craft. They are now leaders and teachers to their peers, as well as to other schools guiding the development of spoken word teams. Collaboration with the Rochester Alternative Learning Center, Apex Program, and Rochester Boys and Girls Club has been a start. This year they will work with youth at the YMCA teaching spoken word and seeking more connections. As a voice for young people and the Somali community, they are looking not only to express today’s problems in the world or controversial issues that make people uncomfortable, but offer a message of hope, change and unification through poetry.

Spoken word isn’t merely just reading a poem from a written page. It is much more dynamic, moving energy in and out to an audience by way of voice and inflection. Pam Whitfield, an award-winning poet and teacher, is most interested in spoken word performance when it comes to poetry. When a colleague first approached her with the

The film features women of different ages, professions and ethnicities. The original take of the film was shot at Forager Brewery, where 75 women showed up in response to a call for readers. They each picked a line from the poem that spoke to them and were filmed reciting it. More footage was captured later around Rochester with more women reading before it was finally pieced together. Ironically, this moving film was created right before the #MeToo movement began and now has an even more impactful meaning. Visually inspired poetry moves the reader through the writing of Kim Zabel in her book, “Shadowprints.” Zabel is a local freelance writer, photographer, poet and health and wellness coach, interested in the mystery of poetry, getting beneath the layers and solving the riddle. Inspired by nature and the outdoors, her book captures the hidden messages within the landscape photography work of Gary Alan Nelson. The words she uses to dissect the photographs create a new visual language for the reader.

Millions of seniors across the country struggle with hunger and isolation. Join the campaign to end senior hunger by donating to support our local meals on wheels program.

PERSONAL ENJOYMENT When Renee Thoreson hit a wall in finding an appropriate spring Easter-themed poem for an event at her church, she decided to make use of her own writing experience. A writer in philanthropy, she explores the layers of people’s stories and business successes. Reflecting on her own story, memories of her grandmother tending a garden, planting seeds and caring for each flower, made her realize that we are all like flowers and God cares for us in the same way. She was inspired to write “God is in My Garden,” a rhyming poem of a few stanzas that she read at the event. This began Thoreson’s personal journey with poetry, writing when inspiration hits. She enjoys the work of Shel Silverstein and writing about the lighter side of life, weaving in humor and lessons. She is currently writing a children’s book. Joy Blewett is a visual and media arts teacher and local freelance writer and designer.

ANY OF US WHO LIVE IN ROCHESTER PASS BY ORONOCO AND PINE ISLAND ON A REGULAR BASIS WHEN DRIVING TO OR FROM THE TWIN CITIES ON U.S. HIGHWAY 52. HAVE YOU EVER TAKEN THE PINE ISLAND OR ORONOCO EXITS TO EXPLORE THE AREA? HERE ARE THREE PLACES YOU CAN CHECK OUT NORTH OF ROCHESTER.

BETTY SUE’S BETTER BREW CAFÉ Betty Sue’s Better Brew Café is a bustling coffee shop in the heart of Pine Island. On a Saturday morning, it is filled with people chatting, having a hearty breakfast and drinking coffee or espresso drinks. The cafe offers homemade meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as homemade desserts such as pies and cakes. Owner Bobbi Jo Kennedy says she bought the cafe in July 2017. “My husband is from Pine Island, and my girls are getting older, and it seemed like a good time. We wanted good food for Pine Island people.” Kennedy has lived in Pine Island for more than 20 years and her family–including her husband, their three daughters and her mother–also work at the cafe with her. “Everything is homemade,” Kennedy explains. 50 March/April 2018 RWmagazine.com

She says she tries to buy local and that most items are from Pine Island. When describing the food, Kennedy says, “It’s home-cooked comfort food…I wanted to offer things your grandma made.” To find out about the daily specials or to learn more, check out Betty Sue’s Better Brew Café on Facebook.

FIREFLY FARM AND CATCHING FIREFLIES RETREATS Just outside of Pine Island, right off Highway 52, sits Firefly Farm, a store located in a renovated house. It offers items including a large variety of scrap booking, stamping and card-making supplies, jewelry, seasonal decor, repurposed items, candles, DIY craft projects and more. Trisha Studer bought the house about a year ago and renovated it, opening in June 2017. “I

wanted to have a store that was a destination,” explains Studer. “I’ve been wanting to do this since college.” The basement, called the Cellar, has tables and work spaces for a variety of classes. Studer explains that Firefly Farm “fills a need for scrap booking and card-making. There aren’t any other options in southeast Minnesota.” She hosts craft retreats at Catching Fireflies Retreats, which is about an hour away. For more information, check out Firefly Farm and Catching Fireflies Retreats on Facebook.

SEASONS HOME ACCENTS & IDEAS Located near Oronoco, not far from Highway 52, Seasons offers home decor, seasonal items, repurposed furniture, prints, clocks, tabletop items and gifts. Jodi Hart, who opened Seasons five years ago, says, “I was decorating in people’s homes part-time, and I decided to take the plunge and start my own business,” Seasons is opened occasionally through the year. “I decorate according to the season,” Hart explains. “The store is transformed every season. It gets totally cleared out and reset.” Hart says that when it reopens on April 4, “It will be filled with spring and summer decor, stems and everyday items for your decorating needs.” In addition to offering a variety of home decor for sale, Hart explains that the store is set up to give people decorating ideas for their own homes. “I decorate the store how you’d decorate your house,” Hart says. “It gives people a visual concept of decorating.” For more information, check out the Seasons Home Accents & Décor Facebook page or their website at seasonsbyjodi.com.

TAKE A DRIVE Grab some friends or head out for a drive, and go check out these and other businesses in Oronoco and Pine Island. You just might find your new favorite shop or cafe! lison Rentschler is a writer and A editor living in Rochester.

Rochester Go Red event. She works with a wide array of volunteers to bring heart health education and awareness to our community. Clausen says, “We are making it a unique, fun event with a Kentucky Derby theme.” The Rochester Go Red Gala exists to educate community members in southeast Minnesota about heart disease and stroke, as well as raise awareness for vital research in the fight against heart disease. The Go Red Gala is an opportunity for donors to engage and celebrate the mission of the American Heart Association.

GO RED MOVERS AND SHAKERS “The Rochester Go Red Gala is a unique event with year-long planning provided by a group of passionate individuals,” Clausen continues. “The Executive Leadership Team, a group of 20 professional women in Rochester, brings much needed education and awareness to our community.” Heart disease is the number one cause of death of both men and women. One in three women will have a major heart event in their lifetime. Yet, 80 percent of heart disease is preventable. Clausen says, “We are fortunate to have the generous contributions of Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular Services and RE/MAX Results in Rochester to support our mission in the fight against heart disease.” When asked how the Go Red movement began, Clausen explains, “The Go Red movement was a campaign started by the American Heart Association in 2003. Since the start of the Go Red movement, the resulting awareness, education and additional research has led to a decrease of 300 deaths per day.”

The Go Red Gala is not exclusive to women—men are encouraged to attend and learn their risk factors as well. We want to educate and raise awareness for as many people as we can.” By moving the event to an evening venue, Clausen expects to reach a larger audience. She adds, “The event will have a new ’vibe’ with a social reception along with dinner and program in the evening all with a theme of Night at the Derby. Guests are encouraged to wear derby attire.”

POSH Just a few years ago, Stephanie Kriener, RN BSN was working at Mayo Clinic in the Cardiac ICU unit. With over 20 years of experience in nursing, and a passion for all things beautiful, Stephanie decided to embark on a career of esthetics. In California, she trained with leading experts in the esthetic field and received her certification in Dermal Fillers and Botox. Back home in Minnesota, she began establishing herself in the esthetic community. Small is better, she thought. Stephanie started building her client base by injecting at different clinics and parties. Soon, her desire blossomed into something bigger. 10/2/201
