Spirituality

As I floated on a tube in the lazy river at America’s largest waterpark one Sunday afternoon in August, I pondered what spirituality means to me. At that moment, I was at peace—with my boys laughing and enjoying each other’s company, with the warm sun drying us off after splashing our way down the water slides, listening to and kicking our feet in the water. I was connected with people I love, the earth and universe. That was spiritual, but spirituality is deeper. It is what gives us hope when a friend or loved one is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, or we make a mistake and we desire forgiveness from someone else or even ourselves, or we need to know we are loved no matter what. Spirituality comes from deep within ourselves and is expressed through various forms. Our homes are an extension of ourselves, giving us a place to rest and relax, to feel safe and secure and, ultimately, to live, to be and to become. We have a special section for the Rochester Area Builders Fall Showcase of Homes and Remodelers Tour (pages 13–21) in this issue. We hope you will tour some new and remodeled homes for ideas for your own home. In this issue of Rochester Women magazine, you will find the program for the 36th Annual Women & Spirituality Conference (pages 26–50). This year, the event is being held in Rochester for the first time at the newly expanded Mayo Civic Center. Terri Allred took over the event and is making it bigger and better than ever. On the cover of this issue, Allred is featured, along with Cassandra Buck and Teaki Garcia (pages 23–24). Buck founded La Mese delle Donne annual women’s art exhibit that will be opening this year on September 14 at the Rochester Art Center in conjunction with the Women & Spirituality Conference. Garcia is coordinating the Maker’s Space for conference attendees to be creative. Toward the end of the issue, check out the article on five women artists who have found their niche in creativity (page 49). Take a trolley tour to explore cool Rochester shops (page 51), including Dwell Local, where many local artists sell their goods. Mon., Sept. 18, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Assisi Heights, 1001 14th Street NW Maggie Carlisle Cupit-Link found herself simultaneously a student research intern and a patient at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. She had to fight a life-threatening form of pediatric cancer, suffering with aggressive chemotherapy and surgery. She found comfort in journaling and engaged her grandfather in conversation regarding her anger, and seemingly dashed hopes. Her grandfather, a university professor specializing in philosophy of religion, was an able listener. With his support, she was able to endure, and eventually found her spiritual core in the divine; although not in the way she expected. Maggie Cupit-Link is a Rochester resident and student at Mayo Medical School. Her faith journey is recorded in a book, which was co-authored by her grandfather. $10 preregistered, $15 at the door.

LIFE BEFORE ROCHESTER Val was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Point Park University in Pittsburgh. Before moving to Rochester, she was on the air at Studstill Media in Peru, Illinois, two hours outside of Chicago. Prior to that she was a promotions assistant/board operator at CBS Radio in Pittsburgh. “My training really came from being ‘on the job’; a lot of what ‘sticks with you’ is hands-on learning,” she says.

ROCHESTER WOMEN’S FALL EXPO MAKEOVER The team at Townsquare Media and Rochester Women magazine arranged for Val to get her makeup done by Katie Kirckoff, owner of GLAM Beauty Lounge, at the Rochester Women’s Fall Expo last year. Val hadn’t had a makeover since her wedding in 2014 and was excited to learn new tricks and tips from Katie. Val says, “I felt pretty! I wasn’t 100 percent into the lipstick, just because I’m not typically a ‘lipstick kind of girl’; however, Katie totally understood my love for a good cat eye.” That evening Val went out for dinner and a movie with her husband. She looked as lovely as she did on her wedding day almost two years ago.

ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN “I think a lot of women have a hard time admitting that there is something they like about themselves, but I hope that changes. For me, I’m glad that I’m an open person and that I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve,” she admits. “Everyone knows exactly what they’re getting with me. I pride myself on that.” For other women, Val suggests, “Feeling good, and looking good, all starts with prioritizing yourself. Whether that means taking care of your mental, physical or emotional state.” She explains that she knows how terrible she feels when she hasn’t taken sufficient “Val time.” To her, “Val time” can mean anything from gym time to buying new clothes or makeup or getting a haircut. She says, “It’s a constant balance, but your productivity centers around what’s inside you.” RWmagazine.com September/October 2017 11

GETTING A MAKEOVER

“I love to get dressed up, and I have had a makeover once before, but I do not wear makeup on a daily basis,” explains Tammy. “I felt like a different person, not only for the way I looked, but for stepping outside of my comfort zone and getting onstage to do the makeover at the 2016 Women’s Fall Expo. I never thought I would be strutting my stuff down a cat walk.” She enjoyed talking with Katie Kirckof, owner of GLAM Beauty Lounge (formerly BB Make-up) before the makeover and observing what colors Katie used on her. “I would definitely recommend getting a makeover to friends and family. You may get introduced to a color or product that you normally wouldn’t consider trying and you will feel amazing,” says Tammy. After the Women’s Fall Expo, Tammy celebrated her friend’s birthday with dinner and had a girls’ night out.

Tammy lives with non-alcoholic cirrhosis. About five years ago she was told she would need a liver transplant, and two years ago was officially put on the transplant list. She tries not to let it impact her daily life or dwell on it. She recognizes that it has made her who she is today, tries to stay positive and believes that everything will work out according to God’s plan. An important cause for Tammy is advocating for #donatelife. “Did you know one organ donor can save up to eight lives? The same donor can also improve the lives of up to 50 people by donating tissues and eyes. More than 120,000 people in the United States are waiting for organ transplants,” she explains.

FAMILY, FRIENDS AND FUN

“I am unique. There is no one else out there like me. I have had my share of challenges—everybody does, and they make you who you are. It’s up to you how to deal with them. You can let them get you down, or you can overcome them. Remember, every challenge you overcome makes you stronger,” advises Tammy. The best advice she can give to other women is, “Do what makes you happy; don’t let anyone get your down or stand in your way. You cannot control how people treat you, but you can control how you react to it. Be the good in the world!”

Tammy has three siblings. “I am the second youngest with my sister Tanya following a short 10 minutes after,” she shares. Her mom still lives in the house she grew up in here in Rochester. Tammy is the proud mother of a 7-year-old son. “I am the mom to the most handsome little man I know. He is an amazing boy and can always put a smile on my face,” she says. “I enjoy taking him to the park, going bowling, playing laser tag and hitting up the arcade. I also try to keep an eye out for other fun, kid-friendly activities around town.” “I am always up for a new adventure,” says Tammy. She enjoys traveling (sometimes spontaneously) with friends, spending time with family, cooking, entertaining, kayaking and hiking. Tammy tries to get a workout in every day, even if it is a quick one. “I have also been trying to incorporate a more clean diet into my lifestyle.” 12 September/October 2017 RWmagazine.com

AN “EPICENTER” AND A MODERN NOD TO NATURE

HEN ALICIA AND MATT CORY MOVED INTO THEIR HOME FOUR YEARS AGO, THE KITCHEN WAS A SEPARATE ROOM WITH A DOORWAY. A HALF-WALL PROVIDED A LIMITED VIEW INTO THE KITCHEN. IT WAS A SQUEEZE FOR THEIR GROWING FAMILY. “THE PROBLEM FOR US WAS TRAFFIC FLOW,” SAYS MATT.

The Rochester couple remodeled the home’s original kitchen and adjacent laundry room last summer and fall. They worked with local Design Studio B to rework the kitchen for efficiency. At the same time, they wanted to complement the home’s existing style, which is dominated by a two-story limestone fireplace. A stone pathway also extends through much of the main living space. Topped with a slab of granite that is almost 8 feet long and just over 5 feet wide, the kitchen island is the “epicenter” of the family’s daily life, describes Matt. age boys to spread out homework on one side while a parent prepares dinner on the other. Furnished with five chairs and stools, the massive countertop also gives the kitchen a social gathering point when guests arrive. One of the first remodeling jobs was demolishing the half-wall and, effectively, opening the kitchen out to home’s main living area. The transformation resulted in new space and a new view. Their modern, 5,000-square-foot house just north of Rochester features light wood paneling in the ceiling, an expansive great room and large windows opening to a deck and a second-story view of backyard trees.

BENEFITS OF BEING IN THE INDUSTRY The Corys, who work in the restaurant industry, drew on ideas from their professional lives about what kitchen features would work in an efficient and convenient kitchen. So, they built in improvements including: • a hidden stand for the mixer, which folds out and up for use. • a drawer microwave built into the wall. • roll-out racks and shelving, including some carriers. • two-level silverware drawers.

new major appliances, including a second oven and oversized refrigerator. All are stainless steel, except, “We chose to panel the fridge,” Alicia says. • a small appliance garage equipped with electricity. “Functional is good,” Matt says, “but so is style.” The couple decided that their remodel had to blend with the look of their house, too, Alicia says.

FOLLOW THE LIGHT BAND ON THE WALL

OPENING UP THE LAUNDRY ROOM The remodel also extended into the laundry room, which, as in many modern houses, functions as the family’s everyday entrance. It connects to both the garage and an outdoor deck. Each family member has an open locker and bench for changing into and out of outdoor wear. The design used a pocket door at the kitchen entrance to save some room. Blissenbach says she and the Corys began planning in earnest in January 2016. The demolition and remodeling work began in July and was generally finished in October. The last touches were completed right before Thanksgiving. Design Studio B acted as both the interior design firm and general contractor. The Corys expect to open up their house to visitors for this year’s Rochester Area Builders Remodelers Tour. Perhaps the most unique feature is a light band that runs like a rim high on the kitchen wall. It replaces a wooden fluorescent light canopy that originally hung out over the kitchen counters. Alicia credits Karen Blissenbach, who leads Design Studio B, with inspiring the unusual wall feature. The light band, or valance, is composed of translucent panels that are lit from behind. The panels contain real twigs from birch trees. They are made by encasing the twigs in a type of resin (called 3form) that hardens into a panel, the designer says. The light band not only acts as a decorative accent, but it illuminates the kitchen countertop below, she explains.

Blissenbach and the owners also embedded the pattern elsewhere. They had it etched large into the tall doors for new pantry cabinets. Alicia herself searched out the light fixture (Troy Lighting, Drift Collection) with a branch design to suspend over the central island. The tree-inspired designs also complement other naturalistic elements throughout the house. For example, earth tones and deliberately rough edges of the granite island reflect other stonework in the house. They installed walnut wood floors throughout the remodeled area, but added another twist. They had the walnut planks distressed, or scraped, by hand to hide damage from everyday use. “It helps it (the walnut) age more gracefully,” Matt says.

Fleming Construction, Lee explains that his dad started out as a real estate agent working with a builder, but eventually he “went from working with a builder to being the builder.” Lee, who works in sales, has been involved in the business for several years. He says, “I’ve had my real estate license for nine years, but prior to that I ran the job sites.” His sister, Niki, is his assistant. Lee’s brother, Drew, has his real estate license and recently joined the company. And behind the scenes, but with probably the most noticeable contribution, Lee’s mom, Sharon Fleming, is responsible for the eye-catching interior design. Sharon collaborates with Jessica Curry from Interiors by J. Curry, LLC to achieve the right feel for the home.

LOWER LEVEL LIVING The fully finished lower level, with 9-foot ceilings, has a generous-sized family room with an oversized walk-out to the backyard. We’re small enough that we can hold our clients’ hands and provide the level of service they expect.” Understanding the importance of keeping clients in the loop on the progress of their home, R. HE WOMEN AND SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE IS A MULTI-FAITH, EDUCATIONAL, HEALING EVENT THAT BRINGS TOGETHER DIVERSE SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE OF SHARED SPIRITUAL GROWTH.

With 90 exhibitors and 84 speakers in the 2017 program, participants can explore religious traditions in a nonjudgmental, supportive environment. After 35 years at the University of Minnesota-Mankato, this year, the conference will be held in Rochester. Highlighted are the local women who will combine spirituality, art and community into the two-day conference, running September 16-17 at the newly renovated Mayo Civic Center.

The rest is history.” With Allred in the lead, attendees can expect some new experiences. The conference is partnering with La Mese delle Donne (A Month of Women) to host a Saturday evening performance. Additionally, this year’s conference is offering a Maker’s Space. “Historically,” Allred explains, “this conference attracts 500-1,000 attendees of all ages, races, backgrounds and beliefs, but I want to expand the demographics even more.” In 2017, the conference program includes speakers ranging in age from 18 to 75 years old. It also boasts speakers and exhibitors from every major world religion, plus a wide variety of spiritual practices. Allred says, “Whether you are interested in social justice as an expression of your faith, contemplative spiritual practice, or just exploring different traditions, this conference is for you.” In an effort to include participants from all walks of life, Allred has also kept registration fees inexpensive. The Maker’s Space, exhibit hall and La Mese delle Donne exhibit are free and appropriate for all ages. “Some women have been attending this conference since its inception 35 years ago!” Allred shares. “They come year after year as a touchpoint in their lives to restore their spirit and reconnect to a supportive community. Personally, I was raised in the Christian faith, even attending Divinity School at Vanderbilt. I thought about going into the ministry.” Instead of entering the ministry, Allred worked for 30 years in social justice on behalf of oppressed women. Allred concludes, “I invite you to join us as we build bridges among faith traditions.”

At that time, I was already producing an international belly dance event in San Francisco, as well as helping produce local events like ROCKchester and the World Festival. Literally the next day, a friend contacted

Multi-media artist Teaki Garcia conceived and will implement the innovative Maker’s Space at the Women and Spirituality Conference. “As a past attendee,” Garcia begins, “I knew the conference was special. I envisioned an interactive community space where guests could connect and make their own art.” With Allred’s encouragement, and the support of community sponsors, the Maker’s Space is becoming a reality. “The Maker’s Space offers time, resources and support to awaken the creative spirit within us all—a way to keep our passion for life ignited,” Garcia says. offerings in the southeast corner of the Mayo Civic Center lobby. The interactive, safe space aims to welcome and celebrate diversity, cultural heritage and self-expression. While grant money was secured from The Greater Rochester Arts and Cultural Trust and Rochester Downtown Alliance for art materials, the labor, supervision, teaching and art-making is volunteer-run. Garcia shares, “Women are caregivers and providers. Often, we make life choices and decisions based on everyone else’s needs and feelings. The Women and Spirituality Conference allows time for reflection, healing, education, new experiences and to connect with other women. We should all make space for ourselves!”

CASSANDRA BUCK Local artist, educator and arts advocate Cassandra Buck founded La Mese delle Donne Annual Exhibit in 2012. Her dream of becoming an art educator stems from her high school art teacher, Janet Suter, influencing her direction in life. “After seeing a need for advocacy and connectivity for women creatives in Rochester,” Buck states, “I connected with the Rochester Art Center to create one.” In 2012, just six women exhibited work. Three years later, the exhibit showcased over 30 women creatives, including visual arts, dance, spoken word and music. Buck explains, “As we expand, we see this conference as a perfect fit! Art, music and dance are bi-products of the human spirit. Why not combine them all?” The mission of the exhibit is to showcase, promote, connect and collaborate with Minnesota creatives who identify as women. Throughout the conference, tours will be given to conference attendees who wish to view the exhibit at the Rochester Art Center. The curated La Mese delle Donne performance will be held on September 16 from 7-9 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at the Mayo Civic Center and is open to both conference attendees and the general public. Suzanne Szucs with Antares Tribal is curating and organizing the performance aspect of the exhibit. “I could not live without art,” Buck states. “I feel like sometimes women are pushed aside in the art world, and I want all women to have a voice. That is why I started the exhibit—to advocate and create. This conference will be the perfect location for us all to do just that.” 24 September/October 2017 RWmagazine.com

Founded in 1981 by the Women and Gender Studies Department at University of Minnesota-Mankato, the purpose is to provide a supportive and nurturing setting for a dialogue of caring and mutual respect among people from many spiritual and religious traditions. Sue Betts’ story begins with a girl who came into this world with no feeling or memory of her spiritual-energetic connection. SHARING GODDESS STORIES Rm 110 PowerPoint / Computer Based, Discussion Based For 32,000 years of recorded history, the Creatress of All was seen and imaged as a woman. Only in the last 1,500 years has Western culture depicted God as solely male. This information has a profound impact on both women and men today. This interactive and informal workshop will focus on sharing and telling goddess stories. Participants are invited to bring images, poems and stories of their favorite goddesses to share. Presenters will also bring a selection of images from which to choose. The workshop will open with a short multimedia introduction to goddess images from around the world. Educator and scholar Terri Berthiaume Hawthorne holds an M.S. in women’s studies from Minnesota State-Mankato, B.A. in women’s studies and media communication from Metropolitan State University and has taught women’s studies as adjunct graduate faculty for the Minnesota State University system since 1988. Terri is the founder of the Mankato Women’s Spirituality Conference. She is a long-time community activist, and co-author of “Stars in Your Bones” and “The Many Faces of the Great Mother.” Jolie Berthiaume Cummins works in a middle school classroom with developmentally disabled children. She is the director of CLEAR, a continuing education program for developmentally disabled adults of the St. Paul school district. She is the mother of five children and a proud grandmother. Diane Berthiaume Brown is a retired educator and writing consultant for K-12 assessments. She also works with developmentally disabled adults in the St. Paul school district. She is the co-author and illustrator of “The Many Faces of the Great Mother.” Diane is a mother and favorite aunt of many.

THE FIVE FEMALE ARTISTS I INTERVIEWED HAVE DABBLED IN DIFFERENT CRAFTS AND ART MEDIUMS THROUGHOUT THEIR LIVES, UNTIL FINDING ONE THAT REALLY SPOKE TO THEM. EACH ONE OF THESE ARTISTS IS BUILDING UP THE HIDDEN ART COMMUNITY HERE IN ROCHESTER.

STAINED GLASS As the art community is rising up here in Rochester, no one is more excited than Cecilia Boggio. Showcasing her work for the second year at Pridefest, she was more than willing to share her inspiration and love for making art. A few years ago, after taking a stained glass workshop, Boggio found a way to freely express herself through the design of stained glass windows. There is a grace and delicacy needed to work with and handle cut glass. Boggio has it, and her choice of colors and pattern reflect that. From picking color schemes to working with different textures and materials (like agate slices), Boggio loves the process from initial design to finished product. Her favorite part of the process is the assembly, soldering the lead joints in between the cut pieces. She awaits that magical moment of stained glass art, when it is placed and light has the opportunity to illuminate the design, creating new brilliance.

JEWELRY Lynn J. Block is a self-taught artist who found her passion in making jewelry about five years ago. Having dabbled in many creative things, she found herself drawn to learning how to make jewelry to help a friend’s business. Inspired by antiques, spare parts, her grandmother’s jewelry, stones and even bullet casings, Block’s work creates elegance in repurposing. Her work is personal and delicate, with a fun flair of etched words like “507 girl” and “Flawed but Fabulous.” It also reflects her personality: warm and classy. Her favorite stone to work with is labradorite, due to its iridescence when light reflects on it. Block’s work can be seen at Dwell Local, as well as craft markets. She has offered jewelry-making classes at Dwell Local and will be offering more in the fall.

PAINTING There was a moment in Jeanne DeBruin’s life when she challenged herself to paint every day for three months. She allowed herself to experiment, make mistakes and explore materials with a child-like freedom. As a result, she found her style and technique, which she so graciously shares in workshops at Dwell Local. DeBruin’s paintings caught my eye one day while I was in the shop, and I participated in her workshop. She is a great teacher—honest and open about sharing her techniques, process and inspirations. Her paintings are simple and complex at the same time. Outside in the wild, birds never sit still, and trying to capture that movement in a stationary painting is no small feat. DeBruin works with a palate knife to capture the quick, animated movements of birds so beautifully. From the canvas, the birds come alive. RWmagazine.com September/October 2017 49

Inspired by the world around her, Nicole Henry has always been creative, making and selling her art. Book folding is something that she started as a side hobby, as well as to offer interesting art class opportunities at the Rochester Public Library. As a graphic designer, book folding engages her interest in geometric shapes and patterns and provides a sense of accomplishment with the finished product. At first glance, book folding doesn’t even look like folded paper. The pages reveal messages or images in such an intricate design, that the pages look cut. Nicole says that it isn’t as hard to do as one might think. Her book folding commissions have taken off by word of mouth and several of them are available for sale at the shop, Dwell Local.

POTTERY Carey Shanahan is a lifetime artist. She holds a bachelor’s degree in ceramics and a master’s degree in landscape architecture. Both of these studies play a large role in her art making today. I had the opportunity to visit Shanahan’s Earthbound Designs Pottery Studio recently and was immediately drawn into Carey Shanahan at her Earthbound Design Pottery her sgraffito work on pottery. Kristie Moore, owner of Soul Purpose Boutique says, “It’s fun to hear women talking, laughing and making new discoveries in shopping. Many women have told me that although they live right here in Rochester, they often don’t take time to shop and visit some of the smaller, locally owned retail stores.” Shana Horner, owner of Posh Boutique, agrees that the LNO event is inspiring for both guests and shop owners alike. “The Ladies’ Night Out tour is such a great idea for a night out on the town with friends doing what most women love,” Shana says. “Even my staff has fun!”

Rochester Trolley & Tour Company hosts Ladies’ Night Out (LNO) tours that offer a variety of ways to celebrate an evening with friends. Participants arrive early at 5 p.m. for a get-together at Five West Kitchen & Bar, and then the three and a half-hour tour begins, allowing for 50 minutes at each destination shopping district. Each shop provides beverages and appetizers for its guests throughout the tour, and Five West offers dessert to top off the night. The uptown shopping district tour begins with Shades of Green Gifts & Home Accents, where guests can shop for Pandora jewelry, accessories, gourmet foods and other specialty items. From there, the trolley takes the participants to Posh Boutique, a clothing, jewelry and accessory shop that focuses on an authentic and trendy fashion line for everyday wear. The downtown district includes Primp, a shop that sells chic clothing, jewelry, shoes and accessories. Guests can then meander over to Refashion, a consignment shop selling women’s apparel and a large selection of furni-

In fact, the tour was so successful that what began as a one-trolley tour became a two-trolley tour, as the first trolley sold out. In all, 64 women participated in the event, and both trolleys were completely full. So what’s the best part of all? Many of the guests commented that the combination of visiting funky and eclectic shops coupled with appetizers and drinks made for a perfect time with friends. One participant says, “The shops were adorable, and I had actually not been to any of them and plan on going back.” Another guest comments, “The best part is just being able to enjoy an open-air ride with friends on a beautiful summer evening.” One of the trolley drivers, Lincoln, received high praise as well. One guest even commented that he was “the icing on the cake.”
