Hello everyone and welcome to another segment of rock n roll Industries magazine (We’re Never Far From The Stage). King of the Hill was a great day for snowboarding and rocking put on by Paul Hampton. This is for anyone in California that enjoys snowboarding and great live music. put a lot of time into learning new recipes lately as well as booking and attending events. It’s been a fun year from snow to ocean. Back to the Beach is an event put on by Travis Barker in Huntington Beach, California with a cool ocean breeze which made this a real special time. You can kick off your shoes and dig your toes into the sand while enjoying all the bands.

his Album had a different writing process this time, you guys sat down as a group to write this record. Tell us about the writing process and how it was different. Maurizio: Right. We use to do this 10 years ago when we all lived in the same spot. We’re all from Montreal, Canada. We’re all over the place now, last time we did something like this was in 2006. It’s been a very cool thing too and we thought it was time to revisit and do that again and go back to where it all started. This record came out very natural and organic and we’re really happy about it. Are you guys planning to do the next one the same way? Maurizio: If we can all make the time. We planned it out to do this one this was. If this record does well, we definitely won’t have the time for the next one. I know one of my buddies worked on your new album, so I know it’s gonna be awesome. You’re working with Jay Ruston. Maurizio: That was a departure for us in a way. In our industryDeath Metal, he’s not really a guy you use doing productions. It was a different approach for Kataklysm. We wanted somebody outside the box. Someone nobody would expect us to use. He did a phenomenal job with Stone Sour and Anthrax we thought; we are very stoked. Are you guys planning some tour dates? Maurizio: We’re gonna do record launch shows the week the record comes out. 4 shows- New York, Cleveland, Chicago, and one here in L.A. at The Whiskey, it will be just like a release party. The record will be at those 4 shows; we’ll also be giving away some stuff. Then, we’re doing a world tour.

issues with that? Maurizio: Don’t do it! No, just kidding. {laughs} Patience is the most important thing. Lose everything you can to make it. Lose your girlfriend! Live with your parents in the beginning if you can. Sacrifices have to be made. You have to find the right people to work with, that want to work with you…that have the same goal…everyone has to push in the same direction or else it won’t work. 25 years is an accomplishment so congrats on that! Maurizio: They told us we wouldn’t last 5 years so thanks for that. I remember my distributor in Canada when we signed with Nuclear Records they said, enjoy these 5 years, you’ll maybe get 2 records, that’s the lifespan. I wanted to do this forever so I got scared and I guess that got stuck in my head because we worked really hard to not let that happen. We did it! This is our 13th record. Any endorsements you gotta give a shout out to? Maurizio: I am endorsed by Sennheiser, that’s my mic, my drummer’s with Pearl, my bass player is with Ibanez. JF is with ESP. Is there anything else you want to tell your fans? Maurizio: Get out there and support the band if you can. Buy the record…stream it. We feel very privileged to have so many supporters behind the band after all these years. Thus record is a breath of fresh air for us. I hope they dig it!

Tell us about your drummer change up. Most bands have a problem with the bass player but with you guys it’s the drummer. Maurizio: Oli has been with us for quite some time 6 or 7 years; He’s the one, he’s been more involved; We also built a studio with him. He’s been a big force behind this last album as well in the writing department- good chemistry. We all get along like a little family. We’ve been together as a band for over 25 years. We sometimes spend more time together on the road than we are with our families at home. Any tips you can give bands just starting out and have

“Lizzy Borden took an axe, gave her mother forty wacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty one” Southern California based singer/ songwriter/ performance artist Lizzy Borden has made a career based on this legend. Starting with 1984’s “Give’em the Axe,” Lizzy Borden took on the persona of the notorious axe murderer. With 7 full length albums, a best of, a double live album and a couple of EP’s, Lizzy has been a constant presence on the rock/metal scene for over 35 years. The cast of characters in the band have changed over the years, with the one constant being his drummer Joey Scott. There have been some good guitarist’s over the years, including Gene Allen, Alex Nelson, Joe Holmes, Ira Black and Dario Lorina. Bassist Marten Andersson has been with the band for over a decade. With a strong catalog of songs and a big fan base across the world, Lizzy has the luxury of being able to tour constantly, even without the release of new music. After nearly 10 years of tour cycle after tour cycle, the band finally decided to take a break. Lizzy has returned to the studio to work on his first new music since 2007’s “Appointment with Death”. Lizzy was kind enough to take some time to speak with me from his Southern California studio, where he has been working on his new album “My Midnight Things”. The album is out now on Metal Blade Records. The first single “Long May They Haunt Us” and the title track are receiving rave reviews across the globe. Here is what The Master of Disguise had to say. What have you been up to since the release of your last album? After the release of “Appointment with Death” in 2007, we toured on that album, and just kept going. We never stopped. Every summer, every winter, we were booking,booking, booking. There was no reason to put out new music, because somehow we found a new audience and the previous albums were new to them. They had never seen us before. Especially through Europe, South Korea, Japan and South America. After multiple tours, we decided to stop, take a break and then start working on some new music. What can you tell us about the new album “My Midnight Things”? It is a mammoth of an album ! I have been working on it a long time because I wanted to make sure it is the album I want to put out there. Most of our early records were unfinished, but released because of deadlines. My main goal was to get back to

songwriting 101. You have chosen some great guitar players over the years. Some have gone on to play with major label bands like Ozzy and Black Label Society. How do you feel about that? I am happy for all of them. Most of them have been really amazing people, and we went on a journey together. With most of them, we toured together, we lived in vans together, or on a bus or plane. We went on all these adventures together. I am happy some went on to do other things. Admittedly, I wish some were still with the band. I am glad that I had the foresight to select guitar players that were amazing enough that other people saw what I saw. You have always had a very strong fan base, especially in Europe. Why do you think that is? I have no idea...We never picked a side. We were not part of the thrash movement, and I was not that interested in the glam movement. I just never picked a side. Usually the audience sticks to their genre. I never did that. If I wanted to play a heavy song, I played it. If I wanted to play a lighter song, I would play that too. So I do not know how we got such a loyal fan base. It’s actually growing. It is bigger than it has ever been. Our audience is younger than ever. The music has transcended generations now. Do you prefer playing large festivals or smaller venues where you are the headlining act? I like the festivals. If you are a good enough entertainer, you can get everyone on board, even if they have never heard of you. To me, that has always been my thing. I love people discovering the last 35 years of music and the show. Every time we play a big festival, depending on the country, some of the people have never heard of us or seen the show. To win them over is heaven for me. We go out to battle every night. Win. Win. Win. It is all about the reaction. If we do not get the reaction, it is a bad night. That usually doesn’t happen.


Time for a tough question. Do you have any idea how many shows you have played over the years? No clue. Believe me, I wish I knew. I know other bands keep track of that, I never did. We just put our heads down and kept touring. We were surrounded by people that just wanted to tour. For us, it was a wild Saturday night party every night. We always liked just hanging out with the fans in different countries. So it was always fun and interesting. I never payed any attention to how many show’s we were playing. We just kept booking and playing for the last 35 years. Have you started to work on the stage show for the new music?

We are working a bit on the stage design. I designed the stage specifically for this show. It is going to be a lot different visually. The whole point is to bring the audience more into the show. I want the fans involved in the show. What is your favorite place to visit? Oh my God, that is a hard question. The main reason I love touring is because of all the great places. I love Sweden, but it is hard to pin point any one place. In every country I have found something. The people are always interesting. You could say that I am an avid world traveler. Last question. Compact Disc, digital or vinyl? Another tough one. Recently we have been getting back in to vinyl. We have vinyl parties, which is really interesting because I have a large collection, and those records taught me how to sing. I never had a vocal coach. I just sang to my records. They have a special place in my heart. I also loved the album covers. Every

time I would listen to a record, I would stare at the cover like a crazy person. If the artwork was right for the music, you did not need a video. You could just use your imagination. Growing up in Southern California, I found Lizzy at the beginning of his career. I have been lucky enough to see him many times over the years . Lizzy has a stage presence that has to be seen to be appreciated. He was pleasure to interview and could not have been more kind. Concrete Palms is a 3 piece band reigning from Brisbane Australia, with their mad playing skills you would think you were listening to rockband that had been together for a least 4 years or more. But in fact they have only been a rock union for 12 months The best way to describe Alex Kosenko is a fresh faced musician and a multiinstrumental wiz, his boyish good looks matches his big personality and even bigger heart. He guinely has a passion for music that you would expect to see in someone that is well into there late 20’s and up! His love and passion for music is undeniable and just talking to him l found l too at times was having a history lesson in some areas of music which l didn’t even know about. His powerful connection with music has seen him form not just one but two bands. His first being Concrete Palms, which formed about a year ago with Dave Morris and Cody Van Kleef. His second being his very own Alex Kosenko one man band which he started about 9 months ago! After having the privilege of photographing Concrete Palms I could see what this 3-piece band was all about! There band has this instant rock edge feel about them rolled in with a burst of energy from start to finish, which indeed leaves you wanting more. The fact that there is different age groups going on didn’t matter one bit. They just really connected as a true rock band and the crowd absolutely loved them. Alex smashed it with his incredible stage presence and his voice wow!! This young man definitely was born to rock. He lives and breathes rocknroll.

Your very passionate about Rocknroll, when did you first realise you wanted to be a musician? And did your parents have a big influence on your early introduction? I didn’t really have an exact moment that I wanted to be a musician. I kind of just started to learn and play because its what i loved to do and I’m so thankful it turned into a career. I still wonder today what my life would have been like if i hadn’t become a musician but it sounds like it would pretty boring haha. My parents where very important to my early introduction to the whole music scene. I grew up listening to what they listened to and i was lucky enough to have parents with awesome music tastes. With the greats at my fingertips i loved early Metallica, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Me and my mum really bond over Pink Floyd especially The Wall. How old were you when you first started playing the guitar and when did you realize that you could sing? I started playing guitar when I was around 9 or 10 I got a little guitar for Christmas and began learning on that. It took a while 14 Rock N Roll Industries Magazine

before i really started singing, as I was a very shy kid. But every year i felt myself become more confident and I noticed my stage presence improving Music has definitely changed me. If I didn’t play guitar I think I would still be that shy kid. I love the bands name Concrete Palms, where did it originate from and who thought of it? The name like many of our songs has a lots of different meanings but mainly comes from the idea of something so beautiful being reproduced and manufactured to the point of it not being what it used to be and representing a completely different idea. The governments just keep spending and spending on new cars, homes and such while so many people are homeless and out on the streets. I guess the name comes from our own battles with freedom and being treated so cruel by the people we are supposed to trust. If you had to name 3 bands that have had a huge influence on you whilst growing up, who would they be and why?

Ahhhh the dreaded question haha. I’d say definitely Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and Nirvana. Nirvana influenced me because as a teenager in my angst felt like i could relate to the words and feel what he was feeling. Pink Floyd because of there views on politics, leaders and all of that in-between. Black Sabbath because there music was just so heavy for there time and i cant figure out what it is that draws me to them just an amazing band. Most musicians dream of being able to collaborate with fellow musicians who would you choose and why? I would actually just love to see how Pink Floyd wrote and went about writing music just being witness to that and have that knowledge and experience .It would be more than enough for me haha my mind could only handle so much important information haha. I know along the way you have met a few famous bands, who were they and who were your favorite? I’ve been so lucky to meet so many amazing bands at my age but the coolest

His knowledge about the music industry and his love for all genres of music was so inspiring to see. It was really refreshing to see just how Alex has such an appreciation for all music and how respected he already is in the music industry throughout Brisbane.

Which up and coming bands are you most excited about? So much talent going around at the moment but my favorite up and coming bands at the moment are Hobo Magic, TrashQueen, The Blockades and Bazooka Fist (Man that dude knows how to own a stage). If you had the chance to play at any festival in Australia or overseas, which would it be and why? Big Pineapple festival would be really cool a lot of my mates go to it and it’s a cool environment to be in. Also being on the same line up as my idols would just be mind blowing. You have such a great stage presence and really connect with your audience

Three words Dude Just Groove. Jumping, running, spinning and crashing it’s so much fun to just let go. For that time on stage nothing matters, no worries and everything feels like its going to be alright. There is no secret if you love what you do there is nothing to be nervous about I just can’t wait to get on a stage and see what happens its all so great! Also one time a guy did the worm in a mosh pit that was cool haha.

It’s all on the hush hush at the moment but can let you know we are doing some work in July and you can be expecting new things August/September.

When writing your songs where do you get your inspiration from? A lot of my own and the bands music comes from the Government and a Political Agenda. It all comes from personal experience of mistreatment. Myself and The band have gone through so much, It’s only going to making us stronger, More independent and more aware of what really goes on with our Government. So when is Concrete Palms heading

I know you have just turned 18, but what has been your greatest achievement and why? I’d proudly say my greatest achievement so far was recording my first full length album in grade 12 whilst juggling school work, final assessment, gigs and maintaining a social life haha. But yea looking back on it now I’m really glad I was able to do it, The new album has gotten me places I never thought would become a reality. Tragedy, Faith, & Love: A Return to Greatness for American Rock Music Album review by staff writer Hunter B. “Tragedy, Faith, & Love,” the debut album by San Francisco rockers the Red Cobras, has been a long time in the making. Since work began on the album, Cali Love (the writer-singer-guitarist) has weathered the death of his mother, his girlfriend, a longtime pet (hey, our pets are our “loved ones” too!), and, most recently, his uncle whom he was very close with. And that’s only the big stuff. The “Tragedy” in the album’s title isn’t just a word. You can download or stream the album for free at the band’s website (https://www.theredcobras.com/music).

But, whatever tragedy played a part in the album’s makeup, the triumph of the album is that it is truly great. The ten songs are billed as, “Zero volume maximization, Zero pitch correction, and Zero fucks given!” Do you remember having a special album as a kid, one that you listened to over and over? That’s what this album is, ten intimate stories with a great choice in covers that take you the gambit from blistering scorchers ala Social Distortion to mournful Hank Sr. to folksy charm to ‘Appetite’era greatness. Do you remember albums that didn’t follow the rules, that could only written by hard-rocking bad boys? That’s what this album is. And when I say “bad boys,” I’m not talking about rich, spoiled rock stars on a drug binge, I’m talking about working class men, with dirt under their fingernails, writing great music and playing the crap out of their guitars and drums along the way, not caring how loud they are, not trying to be politically correct, and not concerned that they are ripping their hearts out of their chest in front of you and placing it on firmly their sleeves. Women, listen to the album’s opener, “I Listen To You Sleep” and you’ll know what I mean. Men, if you want a kick ass, hard rockin’ album that can also help you win over the ladies, this one is it.

Something that makes this album special that you may not know about is that the Red Cobras, Cali, bassist Noti (pronounced “NoT”), and touring drummer Randy, aren’t professional musicians. They are defense attorneys and they are bad ass at their jobs. They sit in jail cells with people accused of murder, robbery, and whatever else you can imagine, and don’t flinch. They work an average of 70-80 hours a week fighting against the system and fighting for justice for the downtrodden and not making a ton of money doing it either. It’s this kind of passion and energy that buoys and carries the album from song to song, an energy that simply isn’t present in the writing from someone in music because they “want to get famous.” In fact, even though “Tragedy, Faith, & Love” is being released on a major label -- Universal/ InGrooves, the Red Cobras have no delusions that their lives will change and, frankly even if it did, they wouldn’t quit their

day jobs. Cali, aka Joseph Tully, is not only one of the best trial attorneys in the country, he’s also releasing a book about corruption in the legal system the same month as this album, entitled, “California: State of Collusion” available through Sutton Hart press. (https://www.suttonhart.com) It’s this kind of real world, real person, real passion that you can hear flowing through the veins of these songs. You may know Cali Love’s other band, FREEX, a long-time San Francisco alternative rock band that’s equal parts funky as well as distorted guitar mayhem. While there are hints of FREEX’s genre-bending approach on “Tragedy, Faith, & Love,” the song writing is much more mainstream. Though, Cali sings in so many different voices on this album that, during the first few listens, I thought the album was recorded with multiple singers as features.

Each song on this album has its own space and, as a whole, it feeds the soul. I can’t remember the last time I had an entire album on repeat, but this one simultaneously satisfies yet tantalizes in a way that made me immediately go back to the opener right after the closer, a balls out cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.” When the chords kick in for the second song, “You’re So Fucking Rad,” you’re know you’re hooked. The ‘old school’ production on the album avoids the ear fatigue that has become commonplace with current Pro Tool and Autotune laden releases. The choice of covers (Ramones, Buddy Holly, and the aforementioned Ben E. King) gives you an indication of the grounded foundational approach to putting the album together.

Overall, “Tragedy, Faith, & Love” is an achievement by three hard-working, day-job-having, bare knuckled bad boys who have given us the gift of a gem of a rock album; a return of the album that becomes a good friend of yours, a friend that you can spend hours, months, and even years with; growing, suffering, learning, and living.

When these three sisters from Monterrey, Mexico uploaded their cover video (their dad to be more specific) of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” back in July 2014, I bet they had no idea what a rush the next few years would be, at the time, they were only 14 (Dany),12 (Pau), and 9 (Ale) years old . Fast forward to April 2018 and they have over 17,000,000, that’s 9 million plays over what the impressed Ellen DeGeneres knew about when she invited them to her show. At the age of 17, 15 and 13, the Villareal sisters had already two albums under their belt: Escape the Mind (2015) and XXI Century Blood (2017) and now a year later after the release of their last album, they are currently working with Francesco Cameli at Sphere Studios in LA to produce new material.

Even before visiting their sponsors and other planned meetings,

they were gracious and kind to visit our booth at NAMM 2018 in Anaheim just after the meet and greet with Doyle and Act Of Defiance. Influenced by bands like Metallica, AC DC, Guns N Roses, Muse, Paramore, Panic At The Disco, etc., their first instrument was the piano as they had attended summer camp and it included music and theater. Later, their parents asked them if they wanted to try any other instrument and with the influence of the game Rock Band, they feel like they instruments chose them instead of the other way around. Their song “Free Falling” was included in Rock Band 4 and the girls were also invited to the Harmonix Music Systems facilities.

HOST “A Pale Tour Named Death” North American Tour 2018 hit Columbus, OH on May 13th with a sold out show at Express Live! After completing this leg of the tour, in support of their recent June 1st release “Prequelle”, Ghost is now playing select European dates before coming back to the United States in the fall to continue their North American tour.

REO Speedwagon came out blasting “Don’t Let Him Go” over a roaring audience. It was a well-deserved roar that maintained for the duration of the evening. They performed about half of their successful “Hi Infidelity” album and did not disappoint with their overall show. Not only did they bring their usual high energy performance, but they packed in a few surprises sprinkled throughout the night. The first one being the reveal of who was in the opening band. Kevin Cronin’s twin sons and their band mates got to show the REO fans how they rock with their own band, Sir, Please. The second surprise was the first special guest on the stage with REO. Cronin’s daughter, Holly, sang “Can’t Fight This Feeling” with him in a beautifully harmonizing duet. This was a lovely twist on an already great song, and one of their biggest hits since the birth of this kickass band. The third surprise was the second special guest brought up by REO. This time the band cleared the stage for “In My Dreams” sung as a duet between Kevin and Lisa, his wife. This was a definite crowd pleaser and Lisa’s personal favorite. Everyone loves to see a talented family perform together, and this was a big night for that. Clearly the Cronins don’t lack in talent and were a fun addition to an already amazing show put on by a band that always seems to bring it!

The new festival created by Travis Barker and John “Feldy” Feldmann brought fans and bands back to the beach! Featuring 311, Sublime with Rome, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Goldfinger featuring Travis Barker, The Aquabats, Fishbone, Save Ferris and many more this festival let everyone, from the young to the old enjoy a day at the beach together. With plenty of beach games, including volleyball “beer pong,” riding a mechanical shark, an area just for younger children and their adults to relax and build sandcastles, Cornhole, battleship and Jenga. This was one beach party that kept you out of the water, but that didn’t mean you couldn’t go surfing, crowd surfing, that is. Both days were packed with the audiences enjoying the bands playing all their greatest hits, with plenty of singing along in the audience. I’m already looking forward to next year already. After hearing whispers about a year ago that well known music festival Download was finally going to grace our Australian shores. I knew immediately this was one festival l was not going to miss. Fast forward a year and bang here it was. Finally a awesome music festival the whole of Australia have been eagerly and patiently waiting for. Since the end of Soundwave Festival 3 years ago, Download picked up right where they left of.

The festival was designed and organised brilliantly and the security and management were on point. I might add it was a such a nice surprise for us photographers and media to have our very own tent with drinks and lollies to keep us going throughout the day. So if your planning on going to Australia Download for the first time, I would simply say get ready Australia for next year because they will be playing not only in Melbourne but have announced they will be going to Sydney as well. The One day festival which kicked off in Melbourne, Victoria at Flemington Racecourse which has proven to be one of the best venues for festivals. It started off with quite the crowd of excited music fans lined up all the way out onto the road of the race course. It was a little touch and go at the start with the weather but ended up being a photographers dream. This years headliners was none other than the awesome bands “Korn” and “Profits Of The Rage” and in my opinion went off just like I knew they would and if there was any indication from the crowd l would say they were more than 100% happy! Some of the other bands that without a doubt drew some very big crowds were some of my favourites Good Charlotte, Arch Enemy, Limp Bizkit, Falling In Reverse, Northlane, Mastodon, Sabaton, Suicidal Tendencies, Of Mice and Men, Gojira and so many more.

Its been 11years now that Travis Barker has held Musink’s Music and Tattoo Festival in Costa Mesa at the Orange County Fair. I love this festival, every year its always jam-packed with the most friendliest, happiest, music and tattoo lovers. And the punk rockers come out to play in a big way, and don’t they love there punk rock music! Im sure each year just gets bigger and even better if this is even possible. Headlining this year was none other than Travis’s very own iconic band Blink182 and one of my favourite bands! What more can l say they absolutely killed it out there, they never missed a beat. Their crowd and diehard fans were going crazy in the moshpit .They always have the greatest time up on stage which in my opinon is one of the best things to capture from a photographers point of view. You can actually see how much they love their fans. Their support act was the awesome band Good Charlotte which gave a brilliant performance, they are just as popular and the audience were definitely on a roll with the selection of amazing bands over the 3 days. Lil Aron killed it with his energising hip hop rock and The Interrupters delivered a rad performance like always! Day 3 saw Machine Gun Kelly Lil Yachty end this well manicured festival beautifully. Im not quite sure what next year will bring but knowing Travis barker it will be something just as killer as he always seems to come up with the best of the best which makes this festival such a huge success year after year! as Rageous 4/20/18-4/21/18, Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, Las Vegas, NIf you like drinking, smoking, and/or rocking out to awesome bands, then Las Rageous would be the perfect spot for you. Most of the crowd had a drink in hand, a third of the crowd had a cigarette lit, and the entire crowd was ready for this kickass roster of bands. A Perfect Circle headlined the first night of the event on the same day “Eat the Elephant,” their first studio album in 14 years, dropped. Throughout day one, 4/20/18, we also heard from A Day to Remember, Clutch, Underoath, New Year’s Day, Pop Evil, Otherwise, Vyces, Slaves, and Silence Speaks. Vyces and New Year’s Day seemed to be on their game and kept the crowd on edge with their larger than life stage personas. On day two of Las Rageous, Judas Priest and Saxon brought their classic metal performances to the stage for thousands of excited fans. Priest, the man of a million jackets, even rode a motorcycle on stage during his show. Five Finger Death Punch rocked the faces off a record-breaking crowd all while clearing up any rumors that may have been circulating about singer, Ivan Moody. He proudly sported a Golden Knights jersey on stage in support of the team getting into the playoffs. In This Moment, Hollywood Undead, Black Star Riders, Adelitas Way, Joyous Wolf, Ded, and Bad Wolves also brought on some great performances to keep the crowd rolling in energy. Hollywood Undead put on an excellent live show and even brought up a fan to play guitar on stage. The singer of Joyous Wolf got the whole band kicked out of the event by climbing the stage scaffolding during their set, which was cut short for this very

reason. Several bands must have gotten the “bring your kid to work day” memo as we got to see many of these hard rocker dads unreservedly introduce their adorable children to the audience from the stage. Otherwise, Adelitas Way, Pop Evil and Vyces were among those who presented some adorable rock children. Not only did Las Rageous 2018 provide a killer lineup of bands, but many changes were made from last year’s event. Among the big changes made by Derek Stevens, owner of the D and the man behind Las Rageous, was the welcome addition of turf. This made for a much more comfortable event all around where people could sit comfortably and enjoy the show. As far I could tell, no issues arose and the event went off without a hitch. People were just happy to be there having fun with a couple handfuls of their favorite bands providing some awesome entertainment. -Julia Dettwiler

Australia’s very own Groovin The Moo Townsville has proven to be another very successful music festival. The Tropical North Queenslanders come out to play for another year, and they certainly weren’t disappointed. With beautiful Townsville weather on their side, the crowd didn’t fail with their creativeness in choosing their festival outfits

l decided a few months ago l was going to put in to cover this well known Aussie festival and see what all the hype was about. After a four hour drive up the coast, l could feel the energy amongst the crowd, young and old, and it was only midday. That’s when you know it’s going to be one hell of a day filled with awesome bands and DJ’s, local. The lineup was amazing. Their choice of different bands and DJ’s all complimented one another brilliantly. From midday to night, the crowds had filled the cricket fields making it a sellout festival. Bakerboy hit the Cattleyard stage with Black Magic, the crowd lit up the mosh pit almost immediately. Then l knew this festival was going to be full on event. What an amazing start to the day. Ocean Alley was a big hit playing “Yellow Mellow” and newer single “Confidence” which gave off their special indie vibes for the crowd to move along to. Dean Lewis performed a beautiful set as always and Alex Lahey who, after 12 months of massive touring, pulled off a killer performance.

America’s very own Portugal The Man cranked the stage up, and by now the crowds were jam packed. Winston Surfshirt was a definite crowd pleaser even with jumping down into the mosh pit to perform alongside his fans. Uk’s Royal Blood rocked out in a big way and, considering there are only 2 of them, their sound is incredible. The ladies of the day and night were incredible, The beautiful Vera Blue was a stand out as was Lady Lushurr who smashed it out there. Not forgetting Tkay Maidza, Ella Hooper, Fuzzy and Rosie Kate who all had nailed it. Australia’s iconic musicians Paul Kelly and Grinspoon, in my opinion, were among some of the brilliant performances of the festival from start to finish. Wrapping up the festival were DJs Flight facilities, with their rad electronic beats featuring the angelic voice of Grace Pitts, and the very kool Ric Rufio which belted out some amazing songs to finish off this once again successful festival. So if ever in Australia at the right time, go check out this festival. You won’t be disappointed. Kelly Koolstra-Aplin

Zombie Shark Records VIP Label Showcase By Peggy Murphy Noah “Shark” Robertson of Zombie Shark Records, Swimming With Sharks Records & Entertainment and Marketing Director for EMP Label Group along with Metal Sanaz, founder and creator of Unfriendly Studios got together recently to collaborate on the Zombie Shark Records VIP Label Showcase. This event was sponsored by Rock N Roll Tequila, held at Unfriendly Studios in Los Angeles and entry was by invitation only. `The featured band that night was Dirty Machine, a local Los Angeles band that got everyone’s attention when they performed at the end of the night. Riksha traveled from Utah in order to play for us and did so very well. ZSR’s newest signing, The Rift hailing from Los Angeles put on a great performance as well. From Dallas, Texas Junk entertained the audience, Natas Lived from Ogden, Utah livened things up with their music. Special Guests Sindria Band from Modesto, California started the night’s music off. Every band that performed that night was great. It was an enjoyable evening and getting a chance to talk with both Sanaz and Noah was wonderful.

What better to do on a 4/20 weekend then head out to the desert for a 3 day weekend music festival? This year we attended the first annual Peace with Art festival that had three days of none stop music with bands starting shortly after the sunrise and DJ’s playing through the evening.

Blistering Heat Summer is here, and here we are ready to blister our fingertips in another edition of the guitar revolution. This month I want to emphasize utilizing the whole neck of the guitar. We’ll primarily be using the keys of A. The first exercise is in Am which means there are NO sharps or flats. Our sequence is 12345432. Without sounding redundant the second phrase is 23456543, and then etc. up the neck until we’ve passed through each position. Keep in mind the sequence has nothing to do with the intervallic structure or the actual tones of the major scale. The right hand should be alternate picking and you might want to use a metronome to help hold yourself accountable. The feel is in 2/4 time and between each click you should be able to hit every note leading up to the second beat (four notes per click). The suggested tempo says 120, but that’s stock and if you can hit 160 I’d like you to attempt it. If you wanted to challenge yourself you can try the same exercise on other strings or in other keys. Another suggestion is to get rid of the repeat signs after you’ve built up your speed. It might be a bit more difficult at first, but you’ll probably be able to get it in the first few tries. One method I like to use is 4 times each repeat, then 2, then 1. The second exercise is also in A, but we are now moving in 6 note groupings. I believe the correct term is sextuplet… that or my mind is just in the gutter. One thing that makes this phrase sound a bit more interesting is the utilization of the major 7th tone at the end of the measure before is resolves to A. I’d like to say that I’m using the A harmonic minor, but really I’m not reaching for that note until the end. I actually prefer the minor 7th (G) but the major 7th (G#) sounds more interesting at the end of the phrase in my opinion because it’s technically non-diatonic, darker and moodier. Speaking of non-diatonic and moody notes, that’s actually my general preference. In the key of A minor the intervals [Root, major 2nd, minor 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th, minor 6th and dominant 7th] ABCDEF and G are all diatonic and sound natural and harmonious together. That’s all fun and games, but to shake it up a bit I wanted to share notes that stem from A that are not in key but still work really well if you sequence them. Here, I’m going straight from the root to the flat 5th (devils tri-tone) and then root to the minor 2nd (Bb). You can see that I’m using the dominant 7th (G) and then the (G#) which I’m “borrowing” from the harmonic minor in beat 2. The good news is, that if you’ve made it through the first 2 beats the rest of the exercise is the exact same set of notes one octave up, and then again an octave higher than that. The reason this sort of exercise is important is because of the way the notes are positioned on the guitar. The G string to the B string is a major 3rd rather than the rest of the strings being tuned a perfect 4th from each other so you’ll want to learn to compensate for that if you haven’t done so already. The third time through I used slides cause it was easier and I also think as in exercise one this month that it’s important to traverse the neck.

you how this applies to picking direction. Let’s get the count out of the way first. I count 16th notes “1-ee-anduh” and anything that strays from that needs to be adjusted for. In the first beat we have a 16/8/16, so since an 8th note is twice the length of a 16th note, the count would be “1-ee- -uh”. The second beat is the same, but the tie from the previous beat gives us the count “- -ee- -uh” the third and 4th beat should be obvious “3-ee-and- -4-eeand-uh”. I put the picking direction on here as well. Really, if you’re having a tough time figuring out the rhythm, you can try all downstrokes at first. The picking direction I chose I stole from “alternate-picking” which is merely “down, up, down, up”. To make sense out this, it was easiest to choose one note. However, there is a corresponding exercise in the measure below with the exact same rhythm. Nothing too crazy, just a blues hexatonic [root, minor 3rd, perfect 4th, diminished 5th, perfect 5th, dominant 7th] in A. It’s somewhat riff oriented, so in the next example I did a lead based exercise under the rhythm work in measure 14. See if you can get the count on your own and then try and build your speed using the correct picking directions. In the last example, I’m sticking to my guns and working from A. You might notice that I’ve chosen all power chords but one sticks out like a sore thumb. The C#, or C#5 in this case is justified because of the power chords. Power chords are ambiguous in nature which means that they can be used in both major and minor keys without sounding out of place. Here, you might be able to look a bit closer and see that all the other notes in the measure are stemmed from the A minor pentatonic scale [A C D E G]. One of the cool things that you might learn is that in a lot of rock and metal, the minor and major 3rd have a pretty unique relationship to the root and that’s why I’ve chosen to use both. This concludes with a heavy riff that can be modulated and experimented with that I hope you have noticed are ripping the stacked 4ths from all the power chords in the previous measure and are simply under an A pedal tone. The term stacked 4th is slang for an inverted perfect 5th…. Or the “Smoke on the Water” chords. I hope you all enjoyed this month’s lesson! Technology is touching every facet of our lives; the world of music is no different. With computers emulating guitars, wind, horns, and percussion, the need for the actual instrument is becoming almost obsolete. The majority of the attention being towards guitars, microphones and keyboards which can even replace most other instruments altogether, the area not having much change has been the world of drums. Probably because the nature of its existence is basic, and even though the electronic set was first developed in 1976, going to commercial production in 1978, there has not been a thirst to change much. After that came drum machines and keyboards which could copy them. That eliminated the need to carry bulky sometimes heavy cases, spare parts, and set up time. Since then the original trap set has not been any less in demand, it’s all a personal preference, but they are usually used by the older musicians, who prefer the classic sound. “Freedrum” is a new and groundbreaking method of getting quality sound without actually striking a surface. With technology both sophisticated and easily reproduced, it promises to be a leader in this ever expanding field of music production. There are other systems out there that are similar, none are like Freedrum. Dubbed a ”virtual drum kit,” it gives an opportunity to musicians not previously afforded. The ability to travel and take the drum set with you, sometimes in the back pocket. Being connected with either a cell phone or a tablet, it can be played thru the speaker of those or an external speaker, or even silently with headphones. Playing along with music gives it a more professional edge. It involves a pair of actual drumsticks which have sensors attached, those are synced to software which is included, that can be uploaded on a cellphone, or tablet with capability of running it. That can also be played thru other software such as “Garageband” which has more options for more experienced individuals. Once those sensors are more comfortable to the user, two more sensors can be purchased which are attached to the feet. Once synced they become the bass drum and hi-hat and that forms the basic trap set including two cymbals. This proves to be invaluable to both the novice and experienced as well. It can possibly sharpen skills, thru repetition.

As for support the website has a wide variety of links to YouTube videos, forums from other users, and even a way to connect with the people who started this innovation, should you need to get more input. Inventor, and drummer himself, Philip Robertson, along with his team in Malmo, Sweden developed this after Philip’s son expressed to desire to play drums. If any of you know about the time, dedication, frustration with noise that it requires for this instrument, then the chance to have the instrument without the latter makes it a great thing indeed. Using gyroscopes and angles to pinpoint placement, the ability to “strike” a surface is possible using those sensors. I don’t know a lot about all of that, I only know it works. We first met the Freedrum team at NAMM at the Anaheim Convention Center earlier this year. The both they occupied was next to ours. We saw the friendly interaction, full explanations, hands-on experiences by passersby, first hand. Taking orders, and leaving a very good impression on me. They told us how it was started and the growth so far; that there were only a handful of employees up to that point. Musicians of all ages, and even those that play a different instruments were surprisingly able to pick it up pretty quickly. In December of last year Freedrum successfully completed a crowdfunding campaign on website Kickstarter, raising over 584,000 euros. Not sure what that is in U.S., but it’s more that I have. Although They are not the first to use a system without actual physical drums, it is the first of it’s kind, and will most likely stay at the forefront of this technology. Adding more options for an ever-expanding music world and making it even more user friendly. I see this being used for a lot of different applications in the future … maybe practice sessions…. Box-A-Lele Walking the lower floor at NAMM I come across many cool products and companies, one of them being the very acclaimed GeoShred. As stated in their website: “GeoShred is a fusion of Jordan Rudess’ Wizdom Music Geo Synthesizer’s user interface, and moForte’s powerful modeled guitar and effects chain. GeoShred has been jointly developed by Wizdom Music and moForte Inc. It’s based on next generation Physical Modeling research of Dr. Julius O. Smith III of Stanford/CCRMA”. Available for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, GeoShred has either been acclaimed by tech and gadget enthusiasts (as well as top musicians as Steve Vai) and not too loved by purists who believe too much technology replacing an actual instrument may take away from the pleasure of “the real thing”. Either way, this “instrument” does create music and I believe it is a great visual way to learn and practice basic and advance music theory. GeoShred was kind enough to supply a free demo for me to try, to be honest, I was slightly overwhelmed with so many options, reviewed tutorials on YouTube and still couldn’t figure out a couple of things, but I won’t blame it on the app, I accept that I need to follow protocol and read INSTRUCTIONS in order to understand what I’m doing. As we push further into the summer days, the one and only summer NAMM show is just around the corner, and I gotta tell you all, to come see the Rock n Roll Industries family at the booth in Nashville, we love to meet fans and musicians, come by the booth and get a copy of the magazine!

I’d like to address some questions I’ve been flooded with here! Cables- Does it really matter if you’re using instrument cables for speakers, or a speaker cable for your instrument? YES! Only use instrument cables for your guitar or bass, and likewise only use speaker cables for your cabinet or speakers; on a pinch you can get away with using the other in a pinch, but it’s not good to swap. Now the biggie, “should I practice daily to get better, or just jam?” Unless you are a savant or prodigy, chances are, you will have to practice to get better, practice should be split between scales, chord progressions, and I’m a big fan of my students learning a scale, then playing over a backing track in the appropriate key signatures, this will give you a chance to play the scales, and make them your own. There is no perfect formula for a killer guitar solo except being in key! Amazing solo in the wrong key will sound horrible, always I suggest at least a hour of practice a day, split how I mentioned and always at least a minute doing the Spider exercise. My student’s hate the spider, but it’s proven to get results by muscle memory.

If you missed the spider tutorial it’s easy using only your fretting hand, place all four fingers on separate frets in a row, lift only your first and third finger at the same time, and place them one string lower. Now lift your second and pinky fingers ONLY and move them to the string under your other fingers, now first and third again, then second and pinky, until you reach the bottom of your fret board. Congratulations you did the spider! Now go back up the fret board the same way, it’s incredibly hard to master, but will add so much to your muscle memory. Megadeth is celebrating their 35th Anniversary and I’m happy to say, they finally did the right thing with this album. They had the full original album plus seven live audio tracks from VHS tapes that were found in Dave Mustaine’s attic re-mixed by Mark Lewis and re-mastered by Ted Jensen. Also included on this Deluxe ReIssue is the 1984 3-track demo and the band’s cover of “These Boots” has been placed back in the album with re-cut vocals to match Lee Hazelwood’s version of the song. Even the album cover artwork was re-done in order to create everything that Dave Mustaine had originally envisioned for “The Best Thrash Metal Debut Album of All Time”, as VH1 proclaimed it. As a Megadeth fan I am excited about the Kiko Louriero: Guitar way this Deluxe Re-Issue turned out. The Dirk Verbeuren: Drums sound is awesome. The guitar and bass riffs with their aggressive fret board work sound bright, clean and crisp and can be heard clearly thanks to the re-mixing and re-mastering done on these tracks. The drums are sharply defined but not over powering and the vocals are dark, edgy and distinctly clear. Apparently this 2018 version brings forward previously unheard parts throughout the album, including a missing drum performance found during the mixing sessions.

This CD contains an incredible array of amazing guitar riffs combined with some very impressive high speed strumming and picking that is unbelievably spot-on! I would love to see this played in front of me so I could see exactly how it’s being executed. I am not too impressed with the vocals, but taking into consideration the talent level necessary to play guitar in such a fashion I gave NightSword – When Evil Rises 8 out of 10 points.
