In a monumental celebration of blues heritage and innovation, Ruf Records proudly announces its 30th Anniversary Tour, bringing together an extraordinary lineup that spans generations of blues excellence. Since its founding in 1994 by Thomas Ruf in Germany, Ruf Records has been far more than just a record label—it has been a driving force in preserving and advancing the blues tradition, nurturing some of the most renowned artists in the genre’s modern history.
The label’s impact on the blues genre is undeniable, having served as home to legendary artists including Luther Allison, Devon Allman, Ana Popovic, and Walter Trout. Through three decades of dedication, Ruf Records has consistently pushed the boundaries of blues music while maintaining its essential spirit, creating a catalog that resonates with both traditionalists and new audiences alike.
Headlining this historic tour is Samantha Fish, one of the most dynamic and electrifying performers in contemporary blues. Fish’s trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric, with 2024 marking some of her biggest career accomplishments to date, including opening for The Rolling Stones and performing on Slash’s S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Tour. Her live performances are legendary, seamlessly blending raw blues with rock, country, and punk influences to create an explosive musical experience.
Adding to the tour’s star power, rock ‘n’ roll icon Mitch Ryder joins as Fish’s special guest. With a career spanning over five decades and known for hits like “Devil with Blue Dress On,” Ryder brings his signature high-energy performance style to the proceedings. His recent Ruf Records release, “The Roof Is On Fire,” a two-disc live album released in January, showcases the enduring power of his musical legacy.
The tour also features blues-rock legends Canned Heat, whose name has been synonymous with the genre since the 1960s. Their current lineup, featuring original member Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra alongside Dale Spalding, Rick

Reed, and Jimmy Vivino, continues to honor their storied legacy, including hits like “On the Road Again” and “Going Up the Country.” As they embark on their farewell tour supporting their aptly titled album “Finyl Vinyl,” they’ll be joined by special guest Bernard Allison, son of blues legend Luther Allison—Ruf Records’ first signed artist. Bernard has
carved his own impressive path in the blues world, recently releasing “Luther’s Blues,” a tribute to his father’s songs reimagined in his own distinctive style.
Bringing a fresh perspective to the tour is Ghalia Volt with her innovative

One-Woman Band. The Belgian-born artist emerged during the pandemic with a unique approach to performance, undertaking a month-long Amtrak journey across America armed with just her guitar, foot-drums, and a suitcase of blues tunes. Her latest release on Ruf Records, “Shout Sister Shout” (October 2023), and her feature on 60 Minutes’ “State of the Blues” story showcase her as one of the most exciting new voices in contemporary blues.
The Ruf Records 30th Anniversary Tour kicks off on Thursday, November 7, at Pittsburgh’s historic Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall, beginning a journey that will take these remarkable artists across the Eastern United States. The twelve-date tour includes performances at some of the region’s most prestigious venues, including Warren’s
Robins Theatre (November 8), Cincinnati’s Ludlow Garage (November 9), and St. Charles’ Arcada Theatre (November 10). The tour continues through the mid-Atlantic region with shows at Virginia Beach’s Elevation 27 (November 15) and Hopewell’s Beacon Theatre (November 16), before heading to Washington DC’s Warner Theatre (November 20). The final leg includes performances at Glenside’s Keswick Theatre (November 21), Jim Thorpe’s Penn’s Peak (November 22), New York City’s Sony Hall (November 23), and concludes at Beverly’s Cabot Theatre (November 24).
As Ruf Records celebrates this milestone anniversary, the tour stands as both a testament to the label’s enduring legacy and its continued commitment to the future of blues music. Each per-
former represents a different facet of the blues spectrum, from traditional to contemporary, creating a living portrait of a genre that continues to evolve while honoring its roots.
Rock And Blues International recently had the opportunity to sit down with headliner Samantha Fish to discuss her role in this historic tour and her journey with Ruf Records. In our exclusive interview, Fish offers unique insights into both the label’s impact on her career and her vision for the future of blues music...
Rock And Blues International: Hello Samantha. How are you doing today.
Samantha Fish: I’m doing fine, thank you.
Rock And Blues International: How does it feel to be headlining the Ruf Records 30th Anniversary Tour?
Samantha Fish: It’s gonna be great. I’m happy to be a part of this tour. I am excited to be able to honor the label and the artists that have flourished there. 30 years is a long time, and there’s a lot to celebrate.
Rock And Blues International: Can you tell us about your connection with Ruf Records and how it has influenced your career?
Samantha Fish: Thomas and RUF records gave me my start in the recording industry. He gave me the freedom to find myself as an artist early on. I made 5 solo albums on the label and did a couple different collaborations.
Rock And Blues International: Can you share any special moments or anecdotes from your experiences with Ruf Records over the years?
Samantha Fish: The blues caravan was my first experience with the label. A group called ‘Girls with Guitars.’ I learned a lot during that time period- I made my first and second album with

Mike Zito producing. I toured Europe a lot early on.
Rock And Blues International: The press release mentions that 2024 has been a landmark year for you. What have been some of the highlights so far?
Samantha Fish: Opening for the Stones, touring with Slash on his SERPENT tour, a Grammy nomination for my record with Jesse Dayton. It’s been a crazy year.
Rock And Blues International: You’re known for blending various genres in your music. How do you plan to showcase this diversity during the anniversary tour?
(continued from previous page)
Samantha Fish: I’ve got a pretty expansive catalog at this point, and I’ve also covered a lot of cool, classic songs. I think that I’m going to pull in the best of what I have written over the years, maybe highlight some of the RUF stuff, and select cool covers as well… setlists are all about balance. It’s all about creating a show.
Rock And Blues International: What can fans expect from your performances on this tour that might be different from your regular shows?
Samantha Fish: Maybe more RuF records stuff. Mitch Ryder will be performing with us. There will be lots of collaboration.
Rock And Blues International: You’ll be sharing the stage with rock ‘n’ roll icon Mitch Ryder. How did this collaboration come about, and what are you most excited about in performing with him?
Samantha Fish: RUF chose the artists for the tour. He’s going to be playing with my band for a portion of the show. It’ll be nice to back him up. It’s refreshing for me to take on a different role in the band. He’s a legend, it’ll be nice getting to share the stage with him.
Rock And Blues International: How do you feel about being part of a

tour that also features blues-rock legends Canned Heat?
Samantha Fish: It’s amazing to be able to share a stage and tour with such legends and revered musicians in the blues and rock world.
Rock And Blues International: The tour celebrates three decades of blues excellence. How do you see your role in carrying forward the blues tradition while also pushing its boundaries?
Samantha Fish: I see myself as an artist with a strong foundation in American roots, blues, and rock n roll.. but I am always evolving and changing. I’m looking for the next thing to broaden my music. If I’m not challenging myself,
then I’m not doing my job. I feel like the foundation is always there. It’s my upbringing. It’s how I approach a song. My voice within it. So I guess my place in it is to have a strongly rooted identity, to celebrate and showcase the artists that have inspired me, to also push the boundaries of who I am and what I expect from myself.
Rock And Blues International: Ruf Records has been home to many legendary artists. Are there any particular Ruf artists who have inspired your own musical journey?
Samantha Fish: I think knowing the origin of RUF records drew me in. Thomas’ work with Luther Allison in particular. He’s a legend, and Thomas
saw a need for artists to have an enthusiastic presence on the label side. Their relationship seemed very special, and it definitely endeared me to the company early on.
Rock And Blues International:
How do you think tours like this contribute to preserving and evolving the blues tradition?
Samantha Fish: We are celebrating the diversity and wide scope that is blues and the artists who’ve flourished on RUF records. We’re celebrating a label that’s given artists a home for 30 years. It’s not a final victory lap, it’s just a stop on what’s going to be a long run for a label and some of its artists.
Rock And Blues International:
What do you think has been the label’s most significant contribution to the blues genre over the past 30 years?
Samantha Fish: The RUF mantra has been “where the blues crosses over”. They champion artists that push the limits of blues and he’s always encouraged exploration within the genre.
Rock And Blues International: As someone who’s been described as one of the most dynamic performers in the modern blues scene, what do you think are the key elements that keep blues music relevant and exciting for new generations?
Samantha Fish: I think the key is a unique perspective. You have to able to say something new in a genre that already has had a lot to say. What can you say that can add another layer to what has already been established? I think the thing that keeps people coming back to the blues is that there is something real and raw. It’s universally felt. Say it with feeling in a new way and people might just resonate with you.
Rock And Blues International: The tour includes a diverse lineup of performers. How do you think this diversity reflects the current state and future of blues music?
Samantha Fish: I’ve always felt the

Blues is a diverse genre. That was made evident again earlier this summer on Slash’s Serpent Tour. So many exciting bands. I think the future is bright. There are a lot of great, young players who are pushing the genre forward.
Rock And Blues International: Are there any specific cities or venues on this tour that you’re particularly looking forward to playing?
Samantha Fish: I love NYC, but the whole east coast is great. We have the most enthusiastic, diehard music fans out there. Especially blues fans. I can’t wait to see who turns up for this tour.
Rock And Blues International: How do you prepare for a tour of this magnitude, both musically and personally?
Samantha Fish: I approach it like do every tour. I plan as much as I can…. I think about my gear, my wardrobe, where I’ll be staying. What’s the day to day like, what will I need to support that? I think about the music I’m going to be playing, and I work on it ahead of time.
Rock And Blues International: How has your sound evolved since you first started working with Ruf Records, and how might this be reflected in your performances on this tour?
Samantha Fish: My sound has changed a lot. I’m nearing 10 albums at this point in my career. Things have shifted and changed. I’ve done different concept records and tours. I’ll have a lot to pull from.
Rock And Blues International: The tour also features Ghalia Volt’s OneWoman Band. As a fellow female artist
in the blues scene, what are your thoughts on the representation and evolution of women in blues music?
Samantha Fish: We’re not there yet, but it’s gotten a little better. The internet has blown things wide open, I think it’s why I’ve had the success I’ve had. It’s easier to create opportunities for yourself when you have tools at your disposal. We have a ways to go in terms of equality and representation. Women have to fight for these jobs and fight to be taken seriously… and not just as the front facing member of a group. As band members, on the crew, in management and booking… hoping we can bust down some doors for the next generation if the powers that be don’t set us all back 100 years.
Rock And Blues International: Looking ahead, how do you see this 30th Anniversary Tour impacting your career and the future of Ruf Records?
Samantha Fish: This is a celebration. A moment in time. It’s a snapshot of the label now and how far it’s come in 30 years. I anticipate RUF will continue on in their path, and I will continue on mine.
Rock And Blues International: How do you see the role of record labels like Ruf in today’s digital music landscape?
Samantha Fish: RUF can be home to so many different types of artists. It’s

important to evolve with technology and the rest of the mainstream music industry, while also still having a foothold in the old school way of doing things. As much we might think physical is done, there’s a large group of people who still want physical product. You gotta evolve with the times and still cater to everyone.
Rock And Blues International: The press release mentions your “unstoppable momentum” in 2024. What goals or milestones are you aiming for next in your career?
Samantha Fish: I’d love to put out another album. I’d love to do more collaborative touring or get a great slot with a band. Maybe television, or lean into some different creative projects.
Rock And Blues International: As
someone who’s been part of the Ruf Records family, what advice would you give to emerging blues artists looking to make their mark in the industry?
Samantha Fish: Find what makes you unique and then amplify it. Trying to fit in might seem safe, but it might box you in to something you don’t want.
Rock And Blues International: Well thank you very much for talking with us today. I really appreciate it.
Samantha Fish: It was my pleasure.
Samantha Fish: Bye Bye.
After speaking with Samantha Fish, it’s clear that the Ruf Records 30th Anniversary Tour represents more than just a celebration of the label’s past—it’s a vibrant showcase of blues music’s evolution and future. Fish’s candid discussion of her journey with the label, from her early days with the “Girls with Guitars” blues caravan through recording five solo albums, illustrates Ruf Records’ commitment to nurturing artistic growth and innovation. Her remarkable 2024, which has included opening for The Rolling Stones and touring with Slash, along with a Grammy nomination for her collaboration with Jesse Dayton, demonstrates the kind of success story that Ruf Records has been cultivating for three decades.
Fish’s enthusiasm about collaborating with rock legend Mitch Ryder is particularly infectious. As she explained, taking on the role of backing his performance adds an exciting new dimension to her participation in the tour. This kind of cross-generational collaboration exemplifies what makes this tour special—it’s not just a series of performances but a living celebration of blues music’s past, present, and future.
The insight Fish shared about Ruf Records’ mantra—”where the blues crosses over”—perfectly encapsulates both the spirit of this tour and the label’s enduring mission. Her own approach to music, blending traditional blues with rock, country, and punk influences, while maintaining what she calls a “strongly rooted identity,” mirrors the label’s commitment to both preservation and innovation.
Rock And Blues International: Well thank you again and we’ll talk again sometime. Bye Bye.
The tour’s lineup reads like a who’s who of blues excellence. Alongside Fish and Ryder, audiences will experience the farewell tour of bluesrock legends Canned Heat, whose hits “On the Road Again” and “Going Up the Country” have become part of the American musical canon. The addition of Bernard Allison, son of blues legend and first Ruf Records artist Luther Allison,

adds another layer of historical significance to the proceedings. His recent tribute album to his father’s songs, “Luther’s Blues,” creates a powerful connection between the label’s origins and its present.
The inclusion of Ghalia Volt’s innovative One-Woman Band represents the cutting edge of contemporary blues. Fish’s thoughtful comments about women in the blues scene and the ongoing fight for representation and recognition add important context to Volt’s groundbreaking approach to performance, which emerged from her creative response to the challenges of the pandemic.
We’d like to thank Samantha Fish for taking the time to share her thoughts with Rock And Blues International. Her candid insights into everything from tour preparation to the evolution of the blues genre help paint a picture of an artist and a label committed to both honoring tradition and pushing boundaries. Her observation that blues music endures because “there is something real and raw” that is “universally felt” speaks to the genre’s timeless appeal.
For blues enthusiasts and music lovers alike, this tour offers a rare opportunity to witness multiple generations of blues excellence on one stage. From Fish’s explosive performances and genre-defying style to Canned Heat’s classic hits, Bernard Allison’s fiery guitar work, Mitch Ryder’s legendary energy, and Ghalia Volt’s innovative approach, each show
promises to be a unique celebration of the blues tradition. The twelve-date tour across the Eastern United States, starting at Pittsburgh’s historic Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall and concluding at Beverly’s Cabot Theatre, brings this extraordinary lineup to some of the region’s most prestigious venues.
Don’t miss this historic tour when it comes to your area—it’s more than just a concert, it’s a testament to three decades of blues evolution and excellence, featuring artists who, as Fish noted, are not just preserving the blues tradition but actively pushing its boundaries. This celebration of Ruf Records’ 30th anniversary stands as proof that the blues is not just alive but thriving, continuing to evolve while maintaining its essential connection to the heart and soul of American music.
Blues People Set to Electrify Audiences on Their Upcoming Tour: From New Jersey to Memphis
By Albert Schwartz
Blues People, a NY/NJ-based blues band, is set to embark on an exhilarating tour, bringing their vibrant blend of blues, soul, and rock to audiences across New Jersey and beyond. This group of seasoned musicians has captivated fans with their modern twist on traditional blues, and their upcoming shows promise a journey through heartfelt rhythms, dynamic melodies, and the raw emotion that defines their music. Starting in November, Blues People will be performing at several iconic venues, leading up to their muchanticipated participation in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis early next year.
The tour kicks off on November 1st with an electrifying performance at The Priory in Newark, followed by a show on November 2nd at the renowned Shanghai Jazz in Madison. On November 5th, Blues People will take a brief break from live performances for a special interview on the global broadcast platform “Music on the Couch,” where fans can hear bandleader Mike Griot and the rest of the band share insights on their musical journey and inspirations. Afterward, the band will return to the stage on November 10th at 1776 by David Burke in Morristown, promising an intimate yet powerful set for local fans. December sees the tour continuing with a performance at Triumph Brewery in Red Bank on the 13th, followed by an appearance at Montclair Brewery on
December 22nd. The tour culminates with the band traveling to Memphis from January 7th to 12th, where they will compete in the International Blues Challenge, one of the most prestigious events in the blues world.
Blues People’s tour is anchored by the success of their debut album, The Skin I’m In, which has earned them a nomination for “Best New Artist Debut Album” at the Blues Blast 2024 Music Awards. Released earlier this year, the album has been praised for its honest lyrics, soulful sound, and seamless blend of traditional blues with contemporary influences. Featuring two promotional singles, “The Skin I’m In” and “Troubled

Times,” which were initially released in 2022, the album tells a story of resilience and authenticity, mirroring the real-life experiences of the band members. Music critics have celebrated the album’s arrival, with Blues Blast writing, “They are the real deal... loved their set and love this album.” Big City Rhythm & Blues Magazine has also lauded the group, stating, “(Blues People) is what I think New York City blues sounds like today,” while NJArts.net calls them “one of the most notable new bands on the New Jersey/New York blues scene in recent years.”
The lineup of Blues People features a talented and diverse group of musicians who have each made significant contributions to the music industry. Bandleader Mike Griot, an accomplished bassist and festival producer, has spent decades honing his craft and has collaborated with a wide range of celebrated artists. Griot’s career includes organizing about eight music festivals per year, and he remains active in the community as a curator and event producer at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC). Reflecting on his journey with Blues People, Griot shared, “I’m extremely blessed and honored to make great blues music with Blues People, and those I’ve worked with in the past. I’m really looking forward to my return to the global blues family at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.”
Lead vocalist and guitarist Kelton Cooper, whose soulful voice and guitar work form the backbone of the band’s sound, began his musical journey as a teenager in Orange, NJ. It was during this time that he first met Griot, then a classical cellist and electric bassist, as they played in rival bands. The two
quickly developed a mutual admiration and began collaborating, performing at local talent shows and small venues. Cooper’s versatility as a multi-instrumentalist — playing drums, guitar, and bass — has been a key asset for Blues People, adding depth and dynamism to their sound. Their reunion years later, when Cooper was moonlighting as a sound engineer at Griot’s live music club, became the catalyst for Blues People. Encouraged by drummer Gene Lake, a seasoned sideman known for his work with David Sanborn, Boz Scaggs, and Meshell Ndegeocello, Cooper proposed the idea of forming an original blues band. Griot quickly agreed, setting the wheels in motion for what would become one of the most promising new acts in blues music.
The band’s current lineup includes Griot on bass, Cooper on vocals and guitar, Ron Thompson on keys, and Gene Lake on drums. Each member has a resume that reads like a who’s who of the blues and broader music scenes, having supported renowned artists such as Sue Foley, Josh Smith, Kool & the Gang, Ruf Records Blues Caravan, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Bo Diddley Jr., and Michael Hill’s Blues Mob. Their experience as professional side musicians has not only shaped their sound but also brought a sense of unity and precision to their performances.
Blues People’s journey has been a story over 40 years in the making, one of perseverance, passion, and a love for the blues. Their sound has been described as a modern take on classic blues — gritty, honest, and deeply rooted in the cultural tapestry of New York City and North Jersey. The band’s formation during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed them to channel their experiences into their music, crafting what they describe as their “NYC/North Jersey Blues Sound.” Their debut album, The Skin I’m In, reflects this, capturing themes of
struggle, survival, and triumph. The songs delve into the personal and collective experiences of the band members, creating a narrative that resonates with audiences across different backgrounds.
Having taken the NY-metro area by storm over the past four years, Blues People has made an impact not just on their home turf but on the broader blues community. Their impressive performances at local venues earned them the North Jersey Blues Society International Blues Challenge win in both 2023 and 2024, and they went on to reach the semifinals at the Memphis International Blues Challenge earlier this year. As they prepare to return to Memphis in January, the band is eager to build on this momentum and showcase their music on an international stage.
Fans attending Blues People’s upcoming shows can expect a performance that embodies the spirit of New York blues: edgy, soulful, and unapologetically real. Each set will take the audience on a journey through the diverse sounds and emotions that define the band, from smooth grooves to fiery solos. As they tour, Blues People will continue to solidify their reputation as a band that not only honors the roots of blues music but also brings it into the present, creating something new and exciting.
With a string of tour dates lined up, a critically acclaimed debut album, and an upcoming performance at the International Blues Challenge, Blues People is on the rise, ready to share their unique sound with audiences near and far. Whether they’re playing at a small brewery in Montclair or competing on the grand stage in Memphis, one thing is certain: Blues People is here to make their mark, and they’re doing it with passion, precision, and an unwavering love for the blues.
Egidio Juke Ingala & the Jacknives: Our blues will make you dance
By Edoardo Fassio
For over thirty years, Milanese bluesman Egidio Ingala has lived in the Olympus of European harmonica players. Having emerged within the Dirty Hands, now firmly supported by the Jacknives (both groups from Bologna), Egidio proudly honors the middle name he chose: “Juke,” like the glorious instrumental break by Little Walter that brought Chicago blues to the charts in 1952.
Ingala and his fellow players perform deeprooted music that gets people dancing. “Our main style is not quite the Windy City blues, but rather a more swinging version, related to rock ‘n roll, that was cool on the West Coast in the 1980s and 90s”, he states, and alludes to successful bands led by Hollywood Fats, William Clarke, Rod Piazza or James Harman. Of course there is no clear separation between the two schools. The Californians had benefited from the lessons of the Chicago masters of the previous generation, like George “Harmonica” Smith, who had played with Muddy Waters and Otis Rush before moving to Los Angeles in 1955.
Thus, in the new album Keep on Dreamin’, typical Chicago blues songs such as “Boogie Twist” by Snooky Pryor, with the classic refrain “I’m gonna pitch a boogie-woogie”, are definitely not out of place. Neither is “Ain’t Gonna Be No Monkey Man No More” by Smokey Smothers, or the splendid “You’re an Old Lady” by John Lee Williamson aka Sonny Boy 1.
Egidio combines his own compositions with titles belonging to different regional variations, eras, and sensibilities: so, he got “Whirlaway”, a vibrant instrumental tour de force signed by Allen Toussaint, a showcase for Marco Gisfredi’s liquid guitar. And again “I’m Going Home” by Prince Conley, a song dating back to the dawn of Memphis soul; rediscovered by the mods, it’s also a favorite of Charlie Musselwhite, and is hardly missing from Ben Harper’s live sets.
There is a tribute to George Smith, with the arduous “Juicy Harmonica”, and to the restlessness of Bessie Smith with “Blues Stay Away”; next to the cornerstones of yesteryear, new original compositions such as “I Don’t Mind” and the album’s gorgeous, thoughtful, danceable title track are truly fitting.
The team is completed by the sharp rhythm section of Max Pitardi (bass) and Enrico Severini (drums) and, on three cuts, there’s the guest guitar of Alex Schultz, whose technique is both elegant and explosive. A reliable partner and a sincere friend of Ingala, he has been next to him since the past century, both on record and on stage.
“We are like long-lost brothers,” declares Schultz, a New Yorker by birth, raised musically in L.A. and stateless by vocation. “We first toured in 1998, and the first time he hit “Telephone Blues” by George “Harmonica” Smith (!) I knew, this guy’s got it.”
Egidio Juke Ingala & the Jacknives: il nostro blues vi farà ballare
By Edoardo Fassio
Oppure “Ain’t Gonna Be No Monkey Man No More” di Smokey Smothers o una splendida “You’re an Old Lady” di John Lee Williamson ovvero Sonny Boy Uno.

In the world of heavy metal, few instruments are as iconic as the Jackson guitar. Known for their aggressive tones and sleek designs, Jackson guitars have been the weapon of choice for countless metal legends. Today, we’re witnessing a historic moment in the brand’s illustrious legacy with the unveiling of the Pro Series Signature Diamond Rowe DR12MG EVTN6.

Diamond Rowe, the virtuosic lead guitarist of the metal powerhouse Tetrarch, becomes not only the first female Jackson signature guitar artist but also the first African American female signature artist in heavy music. It’s a testament to both Rowe’s exceptional talent and Jackson’s commitment to fostering progressive, diverse voices in the metal scene.
The Diamond Rowe Pro Series DR12MG EVTN6 is a marvel of modern guitar craftsmanship, tailored to meet the demands of today’s progressive metal players. Based on Jackson’s single-cut Monarkh platform, this premium instrument is designed for precision and accuracy, reflecting Rowe’s asymmetrical approach to playing that defines Tetrarch’s heavy yet catchy sound.

Rock And Blues International: Hello.
Diamond Rowe: Hey, is this Kevin?
Rock And Blues International: Yeah.
Diamond Rowe: Hi, it’s Diamond. How’s it going?

Rock And Blues International: Fine. How are you doing?
Diamond Rowe: I’m doing well. Doing well.
Rock And Blues International: This is kind of a responsibility for you now, because now you’re spearheading something that hasn’t been done before, becoming the first female Jackson signature guitar artist.
Diamond Rowe: Yeah, I know, right. It’s pretty crazy, but I say that, like, at least the spearheading of it feels natural, because I didn’t have to, I was just myself to get here. You know what I mean, didn’t have to fabricate it or anything, and it just happened naturally and organically. So I think I’ll be all right.
From her humble beginnings cofounding Tetrarch in high school to sharing stages with giants like Guns N’ Roses, Slipknot, Lamb of God, and Disturbed, Diamond’s journey is as inspiring as it is impressive. Her signature model is not just a guitar; it’s a symbol of breaking barriers and redefin-
Rock And Blues International: How do you feel being the first one? When you think about that, what’s the first thing you think of?
Diamond Rowe: You know, I’m

honored. I think when I started playing guitar when I was 11 and 12 years old, it was like, I just wanted to be like my favorite guitar players, who are all guys. But I never really paid attention to the fact that like I was it was anything different, especially being like a person of color. I never even thought about it. I just loved heavy music, and I loved guitar so much, and I kind of let that passion drive me through to this point. And now that we’ve done this, it feels amazing to know that, like just being genuinely myself and and doing things that were driven from just my passion and love for this instrument and for the music has brought me here to a point where, like you said, now I can inspire so many others to maybe do the same, to just let passion drive them and to not worry about their differences, and like people will take heed and you can really make big strides that way.
Rock And Blues International: Well, is this going to be the main ax in your rack from now on?
Diamond Rowe: Absolutely. You know, I have the prototype of this that they sent me, and then I have some production models. And then I also have another custom shop that they sent me that’s basically the exact same as my signature, just a different color. So those will probably be my mainstays for for a good while now.
Rock And Blues International: What were you playing before that?
Diamond Rowe: I was with the company ESP, before.
Rock And Blues International: So when did Jackson approach you? Or did you approach Jackson?
Diamond Rowe: Jackson approached me. I had been with ESP since about 2017 and I also play EVH amps, which my rep at EVH is also the same rep at Jackson. And so it wasn’t long after, I started working closely with ESP that he contacted me, asking me if I was with a guitar company, because he really
wanted me to try out some Jacksons. But at the time I had just gotten with ESP and over the years, he periodically would just say, hey, if you ever want to try some Jacksons, let me know. And I was fine where I was and everything, but about two years ago, he came to me and wanted to talk about, and wanting to send me some guitars. He just really wanted me to try them, and wanting to build me a guitar that would be perfect for me, and that they wanted to do a signature run, essentially.
Rock And Blues International: Well, how much input did you have into the construction of the guitar? Did you just... did you design this from the ground up to just fit perfectly in your hands?
Diamond Rowe: Oh, yeah, absolutely. So they, they even told me... they’re like, you want to put a fish on this thing, have at it, because I like to fish by the way. They let me have the say, completely on everything. If it was something that they could do, or was in the realm of the company, being able to do like I could, I could have it.
Rock And Blues International: What was the first thing you told them you had to have on the guitar?
Diamond Rowe: I basically sent them my main specs from the very beginning, it was an EverTune bridge I had to have. I definitely wanted Luminlay fret dots on the side. Um, I definitely wanted the EMG 8185 pickups in it. And those were like 100% for me, you know. And I also told them I really wanted a new headstock, like a different headstock than what they had on their
previous single cut models. And luckily, they were very okay with that too.
Rock And Blues International: Did you design the headstock?
Diamond Rowe: I did, yeah. So their Monarch is their single cut series at Jackson, and it had a different headstock on it. It had, like the candle flame looking headstock, like you see on their dinkies and stuff like that. And I was like, I really want to do a different headstock. So we tried some different ones that they had in the Jackson Arsenal from other guitars, and none of them really worked. So they were like, if you can just draw up one that you like, or something could be a rough sketch, send it to us, and we’ll see if we can, like, make it happen. So that’s that’s what we did,
Rock And Blues International: What other things did you have added on there, like the the radius of the neck, or is it a flat board on the fretboard, or is it slightly rounded, or what?
Diamond Rowe: The frets? Uh, that’s a great question. I’m really bad at something like that, I feel like, because I basically, kind of, they knew of guitars I played in the past and so and I just was like, I know that these are comfortable. It’s a 12 inch radius. I know that. But they were like, well, we could just mimic that. If that’s what’s comfortable for you, we’ll do that. One thing we did do, though, is, I usually played a 24 and three quarter scale length. This guitar we did 25 and a half, which is like the Fender scale, which is cool, because you don’t ever see that on single cuts, really.
continued on next page
Diamond Rowe Makes History
It’s usually... unless it’s a PRS, I think they do 25 but, yeah, we tried that. We did like the Fender scale length, which ended up sounding really good and feeling really cool. So that’s like, the one main difference.
Rock And Blues International: I see you went with the bound headstock, and with the bound fret board on there and the jumbo frets. Now, how much do you think that has enhanced your playing since you started with that, with, like the jumbo frets, or have you always used jumbos?
Diamond Rowe: I’ve always used Jumbos frets, 24 jumbo frets. I’ve been playing probably for, like I said, seven, eight years, maybe longer. So I’m just used to that it was that that part wasn’t a change. It’s what I what I’m used to, and what feels good to me.
Rock And Blues International: Fret inlays on there. What are there? No fret inlays? Are they dark colored?
Diamond Rowe: There’s no inlays on it. Um, what ended up happening was, you know, my name is Diamond. So
(continued from previous page)
in the beginning I was like, I really want to do something with diamonds on the fretboard. You know, whether that’s a diamond on around the 12th fret, or diamond and inlays, or whatever. And we tried all kinds of things, but everything came out, just for my taste, looking like kind of gaudy. And I was like, and every guitar I’ve ever played in the past has had block inlays or something like that, which looks awesome. My new custom shop, I put blacklight inlays on that one too. But with this one I was like... You know what? Let’s try no inlays at all. And it came out looking just very sleek, very modern, and it just looks aggressive. So I kept it that way, with with the no inlays.
Rock And Blues International: What do you call the markers on the top of the neck?
Diamond Rowe: They’re, they’re called Luminlay fret dots. So like they glow when it’s dark. If you’re on a dark stage or whatever, you activate them by shining like a flashlight or or light on them. Then when you go off onto the stage and everything, they like glow in the dark.
Rock And Blues International: Have you played any festivals with this out in the daylight?
Diamond Rowe: Not this guitar, because we when we started building this guitar, it was basically when I was going into the studio to work on the new music that we’ve been working on for the last year. So luckily, the most I’ve gotten to really test this out and use it is in rehearsals. And also, we tracked most of all the new songs that we have with this guitar, which is awesome. It sounds amazing. So I’m excited to get out on the road here in the next couple months and really dig into them in a live setting. That’s going to be a lot of fun.
Rock And Blues International: With these pickups that you have in there, you’ve used this model pickup before, right?
Diamond Rowe: Oh yeah, absolutely. It’s pretty much my mainstay pickup combo, other than every now and then, I’ll deviate to a 5766 every now

(continued from previous page) and then, but for the most part, 8185 is my go to.
Rock And Blues International: About how long will it be before it starts being road tested?
Diamond Rowe: I would say the very beginning of 2025. We should be have a pretty full touring schedule, starting in the first quarter of 2025, through the entire year and some more.
Rock And Blues International: Does the band have a new product out right now? I thought you released one not too long ago.
Diamond Rowe: We did. We released a single. September 19. “Live Not Fantasize,” is our newest single that was released. So that’s what’s pumping right now. It’s on XM Radio, and also, like terrestrial radio stations are picking up on it now, and it’s doing very well. And we should have some announcements soon on more to come.
Rock And Blues International: Was this guitar used on the recording of that?
Diamond Rowe: It was, yes.
Rock And Blues International: And so how well is the single doing right now?
Diamond Rowe: Doing well, you know, we hadn’t put out anything in a couple years because we had been working on the new music and tracking and all of that. So it feels good to have it out. It’s been great so far. Like I said, it’s on XM radio, on Octane and Liquid Metal, and it’s being added to radio stations all over the country now. And yeah, the fans and everyone seem to really enjoy it. The guitar solo seems to be a big highlight of that song, which I kind of felt like it would be. It’s definitely one of the coolest I’ve ever done. And, yeah, so far so good. It seems like people are enjoying it. And that’s the goal.
Rock And Blues International: What haven’t I touched on here that I should have asked you?
Diamond Rowe: I mean, I think you hit pretty much everything. Just hoping everyone just keeps an eye out. We have a lot of really cool, cool stuff coming. A lot of announcements about the new music and touring. So it should be a very, very good, you know, upcoming few months here for our camp and everyone who pays attention to us. So it’s going to be going to be fun,
Rock And Blues International: And for people that want to go out and get your guitar, for the new people that want to run out there and grab this guitar right now, how easy is it to acquire?
Diamond Rowe: It’s pretty easy. So if you just you could literally just Google Diamond Rowe Jackson signature, and I know a lot of places have it up for sale, Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Reverb, so I feel like it would probably probably be pretty easy to find, and I hope that they go out and grab one. It’s a great guitar.
Rock And Blues International: Anything else we need to talk about, anything?
Diamond Rowe: I think that’s it. I think that was perfect.
Rock And Blues International: All right then, we’ll talk again when the new album comes out.
Diamond Rowe: Sounds perfect. We’ll talk then.

Grammy-Nominated Blues Icon Tab Benoit’s “I Hear Thunder” Tour Electrifies Nation, Marking Triumphant Return After 13-Year Recording Hiatus
By Robert Wilkins
In a musical journey that’s reverberating across America, Louisiana blues guitar virtuoso Tab Benoit is taking his “I Hear Thunder” Tour coast to coast, delivering electrifying performances that remind audiences why he’s considered one of the most authentic voices in contemporary blues. The tour, extending throughout 2024, celebrates Benoit’s triumphant return to recording with his first new album in thirteen years – a release that immediately soared to Billboard’s #1 Blues Album spot upon its September debut.
“I Hear Thunder,” released on Benoit’s own Whiskey Bayou Records, stands as a testament to the power of musical patience
and creative authenticity. The ten-track collection proves that Benoit’s thirteen-year studio silence has only served to deepen his artistic vision and amplify his already formidable guitar prowess. The album’s immediate rise to the top of the Billboard Blues Chart demonstrates that the appetite for Benoit’s distinctive bayou-blues fusion remains stronger than ever.
The new record represents more than just a collection of songs; it’s a collaborative masterpiece that brings together some of the most respected names in American roots music. Guitar legend Anders Osborne, whose brilliant touch graces nine of the album’s tracks, helps create a rich tapestry of sound that honors the blues tradition while pushing its boundaries. The addition of The Meters’
bassist George Porter Jr. on several tracks, including the crowd-favorite “Little Queenie” and “I’m A Write That Down,” infuses the project with an unmistakable New Orleans funk groove that sets it apart in the contemporary blues landscape.
On stage, Benoit’s powerhouse touring band features longtime collaborator Corey Duplechin on bass and the dynamic Terence Higgins on drums, creating a rhythm section that serves as the perfect foundation for Benoit’s soaring guitar work and soulful vocals. Recent performances have drawn enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences alike, with American Blues Scene’s Rick Scuteri capturing the electricity of recent shows: “From Tab’s solos to Anders’ solos, what a show.” Audiences are regularly treated to unexpected moments, including Benoit occasionally returning to his first musical love – the drums – during explosive encores that bring crowds to their feet.
The tour marks yet another significant chapter in Benoit’s remarkable career journey. Since bursting onto the scene in 1992 with his debut album “Nice and Warm,” he has consistently earned critical acclaim, including multiple Blues Music Awards and four Grammy nominations. However, what truly sets Benoit apart is his unwavering commitment to both musical excellence and environmental advocacy.
In 2001, Benoit emerged as a powerful voice for Louisiana’s endangered wetlands, a cause that earned him the prestigious Governor’s Award. His creation of the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars – featuring an allstar lineup including Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, George Porter Jr., Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Vidacovich, Johnny Sansone, and Waylon Thibodeaux – demonstrated how music could be a vehicle for environmental awareness and social change. This dedication to preservation has only enhanced the authenticity of his artistic expression, making each tour stop not just a concert, but a celebration of Louisiana’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
The setlists for the “I Hear Thunder” Tour showcase the full spectrum of Benoit’s musical journey. From the thunderous title track of the new album to fan favorites from his extensive catalog, each show offers a dynamic blend of styles that demonstrates why Benoit remains one of blues music’s most compelling performers. The new material, including songs like “The Ghost of Gatemouth Brown,” “Still Gray,” and “Watching the Gators Roll In,” showcases Benoit’s evolution as both a guitarist and songwriter while staying true to his Louisiana roots.

Tab Benoit
(continued from previous page)
Benoit’s influence extends beyond his own performances through Whiskey Bayou Records, the label he founded in 2017 with partner and manager Rueben Williams. The label has become a home for established artists such as Eric McFadden, Damon Fowler, Eric Johanson, Jeff McCarty, and Dash Rip Rock, furthering Benoit’s role as a custodian of American roots music. This commitment to supporting other artists while maintaining his own creative output has helped establish Benoit as one of the genre’s most important figures.
The impact of Benoit’s fourteen-year recording hiatus following his award-winning 2014 album “Medicine” has only served to heighten appreciation for his return. Rather than diminishing his creative powers, the break appears to have provided time for reflection and renewal, resulting in some of the most powerful music of his career. The new material resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers, suggesting that Benoit’s influence on American blues will continue to grow.
As the “I Hear Thunder” Tour makes its way across the country, each performance serves as a reminder of the enduring power of authentic, soulful expression. In an era where much of popular music seems increasingly disconnected from its roots, Benoit stands as a beacon for the continuing vitality of the blues tradition. His shows combine technical virtuosity with emotional depth, delivered with a passion that comes from decades of dedication to his craft.
The tour’s success reflects not only Benoit’s musical excellence but also the growing appreciation for artists who maintain their integrity while pushing their artistic boundaries. In venues large and small, audiences are discovering – or rediscovering – why Tab Benoit remains one of the most important voices in contemporary blues.
For fans of authentic American roots music, the “I Hear Thunder” Tour represents a must-see opportunity to experience one of blues’ most distinctive voices in his element. Whether performing scorching guitar solos, delivering soulful vocals, or sharing stories between songs, Benoit consistently demonstrates why he’s considered one of the genre’s most compelling artists.
As the tour continues through 2024, it stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of genuine artistry and the continuing vitality of the blues tradition. Each performance not
only celebrates Benoit’s triumphant return to recording but also reinforces his status as one of American music’s most important contemporary voices.

This twelve-track compilation, produced and recorded at Montrose Records in Ruidoso, New Mexico, showcases Cagle’s vocal prowess and the extraordinary talent of a star-studded lineup of session musicians.
From the opening notes of “Dance Dance Dance,” featuring the veteran saxophonist Eric Demmer, to the final strains of “Whadda Think O’ That,” the album grabs listeners and doesn’t let go. Each track is a testament to Cagle’s ability to traverse various sub-genres of blues, creating a rich tapestry of sound that keeps the audience engaged throughout.

The lineup also features Dave Shanks on Hammond organ, Sam Barlow on harmonica, and many other seasoned professionals who bring their unique flair to the project.
“Zia Blues” isn’t just a showcase of one style of blues; it’s a comprehensive journey through the genre. The album includes sultry numbers like “Rt 66,” which pays homage to the iconic highway with a mesmerizing guitar intro by Blind Man Tim Martin. Fans of classic blues will appreciate the reinvention of “Treat Her Right,” where Cagle collaborates with sax maestro Eric Demmer for a knockout performance.
Other standout tracks include “Them Blues,” a juke joint-style piece featuring the respected guitar work of Rich Chorne’ and harmonica virtuoso Ron Ramelli, known for his tours with Lavelle White. “Be With You” sees Cagle teaming up with modern blues greats Shawn Allen on keys and drums, and Sam Barlow delivering killer harmonica licks.
For those who appreciate the roots of the genre, “Wish I Was In Heaven” offers a taste of Delta blues, with veteran lead guitarist Mark Kashmar and percussionist Kelley Wright adding authentic flavor to the track.
Richard Cagle, a stalwart of the blues scene, has made his home in the mountains of Ruidoso, New Mexico, where he owns and operates Montrose Recording Studios. This picturesque studio, perched atop a mountain with breathtaking views of the Sierra Blancas, has become a haven for both established and up-and-coming artists.
Richard Cagle & The Voodoo Choir Unleash Powerhouse Blues Rock Album “Zia Blues”
Cagle’s journey from Dumas, Texas, to becoming an award-winning recording engineer and producer is a testament to his passion for music. As a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy Awards), he has worked with a who’s who of the music industry, including Joe “King” Carrasco, Johnny Winter, and Carolyn Wonderland, among others.
His support for local talent and touring artists has made him a beloved figure in the southern New Mexico music scene. In 2017, Richard Cagle & the Voodoo Choir took home best blues honors at the New Mexico Music Awards, cementing their status as a powerhouse in the regional blues community.
“Zia Blues” is being hailed by critics as possibly Richard Cagle’s best work to date. The album’s depth and variety, coupled

Cyndi Lauper
By Greg Fontaine
Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Awardwinning artist Cyndi Lauper is set to embark on her “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour,” marking a significant milestone in the career of the iconic singer-songwriter. This tour, described as her final major tour, is not a retirement from the music business but rather a celebration of her illustrious career and a chance for her to connect with fans across the nation on a grand scale one last time.
Lauper’s career, spanning over four decades, has been nothing short of extraordinary. Born on June 22, 1953, in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, New York, Lauper’s journey to stardom was not without its challenges. She dropped out of high school in her late teens to pursue her passion for music, singing in various local cover bands. Her early struggles, including a period when she had to file for bankruptcy after her first band Blue Angel disbanded, only fueled her determination to succeed.
The turning point came in 1983 when Lauper released her debut solo album, “She’s So Unusual.” The album was a game-changer, not just for Lauper but for the entire music industry. It catapulted her to stardom, making her the first woman in history to have four top-five singles from a debut album. These hits included the iconic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and “All Through the Night.” The album’s success was bolstered by heavy MTV support, particularly for the “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” video, which became a cultural phenomenon.
Lauper’s impact extended far beyond her musical achievements. With her distinctive voice, colorful fashion sense, and unapologetic personality, she became a symbol of female empowerment and individuality. Her music, a unique blend of pop, new wave, and rock, with touches of reggae and funk, appealed to a wide audience and helped bridge the gap between underground and mainstream music scenes.
Throughout her career, Lauper has consistently reinvented herself. Her sophomore album, “True Colors,”
Pop

released in 1986, showcased a more mature sound while still maintaining her signature style. The title track became another number-one hit and an anthem for the LGBTQ+ community. In subsequent years, Lauper explored various
musical genres, from the introspective pop-rock of “A Night to Remember” to the adult contemporary sounds of “Sisters of Avalon.”

The new millennium saw Lauper continuing to evolve as an artist. Her 2003 album “At Last” demonstrated her ability to interpret classic pop standards, while 2010’s “Memphis Blues” showcased her versatility by delving into the blues genre. In 2016, she surprised fans with “Detour,” a country music album featuring collaborations with legends like Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris.
But perhaps one of Lauper’s most significant achievements came in 2013 when she wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots.” The production was a massive success, earning 13 Tony nominations and winning six, including Best Musical. Lauper made history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony for Best Original Score by herself, adding another prestigious accolade to her already impressive collection.
The “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour,” produced by Live Nation, is Lauper’s first major tour in a decade. The 23-city headlining tour kicks off on October 18, 2024, in Montreal and
will traverse North America before concluding in Paris on February 28, 2025, after 35 shows. This tour is not just a series of concerts; it’s a celebration of Lauper’s enduring legacy and her connection with fans across generations.
When Lauper announced the tour in June 2024, she was quick to clarify that while this may be her last major tour, she’s not bidding farewell to music altogether. “I’m strong now, but I don’t know what I’m going to be like in four years,” Lauper explained, emphasizing her desire to celebrate with fans while she’s at her peak. She added that she will remain open to occasional performances and musical projects in the future, reassuring fans that this is not the end of her musical journey, but rather a new chapter.
Fans can expect to hear all of Lauper’s greatest hits during the tour, from the empowering “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” to the heartfelt “Time After Time” and the uplifting “True Colors.” But it won’t just be a night of nostalgia.
Lauper, known for her energetic and theatrical performances, is sure to bring her signature style and infectious energy to each stage, creating unforgettable experiences for all in attendance.
The timing of the farewell tour coincides with several exciting projects that offer fans a deeper look into Lauper’s life and career. “Let the Canary Sing,” a feature-length documentary exploring Lauper’s extraordinary journey, premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2023. The film provides an intimate portrait of the artist, tracing her rise from a troubled childhood to international stardom and her ongoing impact on popular culture.
Complementing the documentary, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, has released a companion album of the same name. This career-spanning collection, available on vinyl and as a digital expanded edition, takes listeners on a musical journey through Lauper’s

evolving artistry. From her early new wave hits to her more recent explorations in blues and country, the album showcases the breadth and depth of Lauper’s musical talents.

Her commitment to social justice has been unwavering, from her support of the True Colors United, an organization she co-founded to address homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth, to her vocal advocacy for equality and human rights.
This dedication to activism adds another layer of significance to the farewell tour. Each performance is not just a celebration of Lauper’s music, but also of the values she has championed throughout her career. Shock Rock Legends GWAR Embark on Nationwide “The Stoned Age” Tour
By Troy Wilson
In an era where shock value seems increasingly hard to come by, GWAR, the intergalactic shock rock overlords, are proving that they still have what it takes to drop jaws and raise eyebrows across America. The band has announced their fall 2024 US tour, ominously titled “The Stoned Age,” promising a coast-tocoast spectacle of music, mayhem, and mock carnage that has become their trademark over nearly four decades of boundary-pushing performances.
GWAR, formed in Richmond, Virginia in 1984, has long stood as a counterpoint to the polished, radiofriendly rock that dominates mainstream airwaves. With their elaborate sci-fi backstory, grotesque costumes, and penchant for drenching audiences in fake bodily fluids, GWAR has carved out a unique niche in the music industry. Now, as they prepare to traverse the nation in support of their latest album, “The New
Dark Ages,” the band is poised to introduce a new generation to their particular brand of satirical metal mayhem.
The tour, which kicks off in the fall and runs through the winter, will see GWAR bringing their outrageous stage show to venues across the country. From intimate clubs to larger theaters, no stage will be safe from the band’s infamous “blood” cannons and over-the-top theatrics. Cities on the tour route are bracing for impact, with local music scenes buzzing with anticipation and a hint of trepidation about what GWAR might unleash upon their unsuspecting populace.
GWAR’s leader, the imposing Blóthar the Berserker (portrayed by original bassist Michael Bishop), set the tone for the tour with a characteristically outrageous statement: “Get ready to mumble!!! On this tour we will CHRONIC-le the embarrassing loser-
takes-all choice between a neurodivergent fascist and a desiccated mummy to be the leader of the free world. What could possibly go wrong?” This declaration, laced with GWAR’s signature blend of satire and absurdity, hints at the political commentary that has always been an undercurrent of the band’s work, now brought to the forefront in an era of heightened political divisions.
The timing of “The Stoned Age” tour is particularly significant, coinciding with the run-up to the 2024 US presidential election. GWAR’s willingness to tackle contentious political issues headon, albeit through the lens of their sci-fi persona, offers a unique form of catharsis for audiences grappling with the complexities of modern American life. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most effective way to confront serious issues is through humor, no matter how crude or outrageous.

GWAR
(continued from previous page)
But GWAR’s appeal extends far beyond their shock tactics and political satire. Musically, the band has evolved significantly over the years, incorporating elements of thrash metal, punk, and even progressive rock into their sound.
“The New Dark Ages,” their latest offering, showcases a band that has honed their craft without losing the raw energy that made them underground legends. The tour setlist is expected to span their entire career, offering longtime fans a nostalgic journey through GWAR’s evolution while giving newcomers a crash course in the band’s unique musical stylings.
The tour also features an impressive lineup of supporting acts, including Swedish black metal veterans Dark Funeral, adding an extra layer of diversity to the bill. This pairing of
GWAR’s theatrical shock rock with Dark Funeral’s intense, no-frills black metal underscores the tour’s appeal to a wide swath of the heavy music community. It’s a testament to GWAR’s enduring influence that they can bridge these disparate subgenres, bringing together fans from across the metal spectrum.
GWAR’s influence extends beyond the realm of music. Over the years, the band has ventured into comics, films, and even beer brewing, creating a multimedia empire built around their outrageous personas. This tour serves as a reminder of GWAR’s status as not just a band, but a cultural institution that has managed to stay relevant and provocative for nearly 40 years.
As “The Stoned Age” tour prepares to roll out, it’s clear that GWAR’s impact on American popular culture is far from over. In a music landscape often criticized for playing it safe, GWAR stands as a reminder of the power of transgression, humor, and unadulterated spectacle. Whether you’re a die-hard fan who’s
been following the band since the ’80s or a curious newcomer wondering what all the fuss is about, GWAR’s upcoming tour promises an experience unlike any other in contemporary music.
Tickets for “The Stoned Age” tour are expected to sell quickly, with some venues already reporting high demand. GWAR’s management has hinted at special VIP packages that will allow fans to get even closer to the action, though they caution that proximity to the stage comes with a high risk of being doused in the band’s signature fluids.
As America prepares for GWAR’s invasion, one thing is certain: no matter where you stand on the political spectrum, no matter your musical tastes, GWAR’s “The Stoned Age” tour is set to be one of the most talked-about musical events of 2024. In a world that often seems all too serious, GWAR reminds us of the cathartic power of embracing the absurd. Just remember to bring a change of clothes – things are about to get messy.
House of Lords: Arena Rock Legends Return with Highly Anticipated New Album
By Nathan Pugh
In an exciting announcement that has set the rock world abuzz, legendary arena rock band House of Lords is poised to release their latest studio album, continuing a legacy that spans over three decades of hard-hitting, melodic rock excellence. This new offering promises to be a powerful addition to their already impressive catalogue, further cementing their status as icons of the genre.
House of Lords first burst onto the music scene in 1989 with their self-titled debut album, a record that is still revered as one of the finest examples of arena rock from the 1980s. From the very beginning, the band distinguished itself with a colossal sound that blended
soaring vocals, intricate keyboard work, and masterful instrumentation. The debut showcased the exceptional talents of vocalist James Christian, ex-Angel and Giuffria keyboardist Gregg Giuffria, guitarist Lanny Cordola, bassist Chuck Wright, and drummer Ken Mary.
The band’s sound, often likened to rock giants such as Whitesnake, Deep Purple, and Van Halen, quickly captured the attention of both the mainstream music media and legions of hard rock enthusiasts. Their ability to craft anthemic choruses, deliver powerhouse performances, and create memorable hooks set them apart in an era known for its larger-than-life rock acts.
House of Lords’ sophomore effort, “Sahara,” released in 1990, further
solidified their place in the rock pantheon. The album featured their breakout hit, a cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” which enjoyed considerable success on radio and video charts. This period saw the band touring extensively, including a notable run with Nelson in 1991, helping to expand their fanbase and establish their reputation as a formidable live act.
Despite the changing musical landscape of the 1990s, which saw many of their contemporaries struggle, House of Lords demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability. After a brief disbandment, the group reemerged in 1992 with “Demon’s Down,” showcasing their ability to evolve while maintaining the core elements of their sound that fans had come to love.
The band’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. The early 2000s saw House of Lords experiment with their sound on the album “Power and the Myth,” which leaned more towards progressive hard rock with ’70s influences. While controversial among some fans, this period demonstrated the band’s willingness to push boundaries and explore new musical territories.
It was the reformation of the band in the mid-2000s that ushered in what many consider to be the modern era of House of Lords. With James Christian firmly at the helm, new members Jimi Bell on guitars and B.J. Zampa on drums joined the fold, injecting fresh energy into the band’s sound. This lineup has been the driving force behind a string of well-received albums including “World Upside Down,” “Come To My Kingdom,” “Cartesian Dreams,” “Big Money,” “Precious Metal,” and 2017’s “Saint Of The Lost Souls.”
Each of these releases has seen House of Lords refine and evolve their sound, striking a balance between the classic arena rock style that defined their early years and a more contemporary hard rock edge. This ability to stay relevant while honoring their roots has been key to the band’s longevity and continued success.
Throughout their career, House of Lords has maintained a strong presence in both Europe and the United States, becoming a staple of the hard rock scene on both continents. Their live perfor-

The band’s commitment to touring has allowed them to cultivate a dedicated fanbase that spans generations, from those who remember their MTV heyday to younger fans discovering their music for the first time.
As House of Lords prepares to unveil their latest studio effort, expectations are running high among fans and critics alike. Given their track record of consistently delivering high-quality, melodic hard rock, this new album is poised to be another significant entry in the House of Lords discography.
James Christian, the voice and heart of House of Lords, shared his excitement about the upcoming release: “We’re incredibly thrilled to present this new album to our fans. Every track on this record represents the culmination of our experiences, both musically and personally. We’ve poured our hearts and souls into these songs, and we believe it captures everything that people have come to love about House of Lords, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.”
While specific details about the new album are still under wraps, industry insiders who have had sneak previews are buzzing with anticipation. Listeners can expect the hallmarks of the House of Lords sound – powerful vocals, memorable hooks, virtuosic instrumental performances, and the kind of anthemic choruses that are designed to be sung by thousands in arenas around the world.
The new album is also rumored to feature collaborations with some notable names in the rock world, though the band is keeping tight-lipped about who these guest appearances might be. This hint of collaboration has only served to intensify the curiosity surrounding the project.
For long-time fans, this new release offers another thrilling chapter in the band’s storied career. It’s an opportunity to hear how House of Lords
continues to evolve and push the boundaries of their sound while remaining true to the core elements that have defined them for over three decades.

It’s a chance to experience firsthand the blend of melody, power, and musicianship that has been the band’s hallmark since their inception.
As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build within the rock community. Music journalists are already speculating about the impact this album could have on the contemporary hard rock scene. There’s a palpable sense that House of Lords is not just releasing another album, but making a statement about the enduring power and relevance of arena rock in today’s musical landscape.
The band is expected to support the album release with an extensive tour, giving fans around the world the opportunity to hear the new material live alongside classics from their extensive catalogue. Given House of Lords’ reputation for delivering high-energy,
unforgettable live performances, these shows are already being eagerly anticipated by fans.

lineup of exceptional talent, each member bringing their unique flair to the group’s distinctive sound. At the forefront is Björn Strid, whose powerful and versatile vocals have been a defining element of the band’s sound since its inception. Strid’s ability to channel the spirit of classic rock vocalists while maintaining a modern edge has been crucial to the band’s success. Sharlee D’Angelo, known for his work with Arch Enemy, holds down the low end on bass, providing a solid foundation for the band’s ambitious compositions.
The rhythmic backbone of the group is further solidified by Jonas Källsbäck on drums, whose dynamic playing style allows the band to seamlessly transition between harddriving rock anthems and more nuanced, atmospheric pieces. Sebastian Forslund and Rasmus Ehrnborn form a formidable guitar duo, with Forslund also contributing percussion. Their interplay adds layers of complexity to the band’s arrangements, from soaring solos to intricate rhythmic patterns.
A relatively recent addition to the lineup, John Lönnmyr brings his keyboard wizardry to the mix, adding fresh dimensions to the band’s sound.
Lönnmyr’s contributions have been particularly notable, expanding The Night Flight Orchestra’s sonic palette and allowing them to explore new territories within their retro-futuristic aesthetic. The lineup is rounded out by the captivating backing vocals of Anna Brygard and Åsa Lundman, whose harmonies add depth and richness to the band’s already lush soundscape. Together, this ensemble creates a wall of sound that is at once nostalgic and forward-looking, a perfect encapsulation of The Night Flight Orchestra’s musical ethos.
The announcement of “Give Us The Moon” comes on the heels of a challenging period for the music industry. Following the release of their previous album, “Aeromantic,” in 2020, The Night Flight Orchestra, like many other bands, faced the unprecedented obstacles presented by the global pandemic. Their European tour in support of
“Aeromantic” was cut short after just one week of what had been incredibly wellreceived shows. The band members, along with their crew, found themselves suddenly grounded, facing an uncertain future.
However, true to their resilient spirit, The Night Flight Orchestra chose to view this unexpected downtime not as a setback, but as an opportunity for creative growth. “It was pretty clear after some months into the Covid madness, that it was here to stay and that we weren’t gonna be able to tour for quite some time. So we made the best out of it,” the band reflected. “The remedy was simply to hit the studio again as soon as everybody was well again. It ended up being an incredibly creative 1.5 years, and so many amazing songs came out of it.”
This period of intense creativity has undoubtedly influenced the upcoming album, promising fans a collection of songs that capture both the band’s signature sound and their evolution as artists. The enforced break from touring allowed The Night Flight Orchestra to delve deep into their songwriting process, experimenting with new ideas and refining their craft. The result, “Give Us The Moon,” is poised to be their most ambitious and fully realized work to date.
While specific details about the new album are still under wraps, if their previous works are any indication, fans can expect a diverse range of songs that span the spectrum of rock music. The Night Flight Orchestra has always excelled at crafting songs that feel at once familiar and fresh, drawing inspiration from the golden age of AOR while infusing their music with contemporary energy and production values. From hard-driving rockers to soulful ballads, each album has been a journey through the landscape of classic rock, reimagined for the modern era.
The band’s ability to create music that resonates across generations has been a key factor in their success. They’ve managed to attract both nostalgic older listeners who grew up with the sounds of 70s and 80s rock, as well as younger audiences discovering these classic sounds for the first time through The Night Flight Orchestra’s modern lens. This broad appeal has allowed them to build a diverse and dedicated fan base, one that continues to grow with each

As the release date for “Give Us The Moon” approaches, fans can expect more details to emerge, including new music and pre-order information. The Night Flight Orchestra has always paid special attention to the visual aspects of their releases, from album artwork to music videos, and “Give Us The Moon” is likely to continue this tradition. The band’s previous music videos have been notable for their high production values and often playful, tongue-in-cheek narratives that complement their music perfectly.
For those who have followed The Night Flight Orchestra’s journey from their inception to their current status as AOR icons, “Give Us The Moon” represents not just a new album, but a new chapter in the band’s storied career. It’s a testament to their enduring creativity and passion for music that they continue to push boundaries and explore new territories within their chosen genre.
The Night Flight Orchestra’s impact extends beyond their music. They’ve become standard-bearers for a style of rock that many had written off as a relic of the past. Through their dedication and innovative approach, they’ve helped to revitalize interest in AOR and melodic rock, inspiring both new and established artists to explore these sounds. Their success has shown that there’s still a hungry audience for wellcrafted, melodic rock music that balances nostalgia with forward-thinking creativity.
As they prepare to take flight once again with “Give Us The Moon” and the accompanying European tour, both longtime fans and newcomers alike are eagerly anticipating what promises to be an unforgettable musical experience. The Night Flight Orchestra has consistently delivered albums that reward repeated listens, revealing new layers and details with each spin. If their track record is any indication, “Give Us The Moon” is likely to be another rich, multi-faceted work that will keep fans engaged for years to
come.
In an age where much of popular music is dominated by digital production and programming, The Night Flight Orchestra stands out for their commitment to organic, instrument-driven rock. Their upcoming tour will be a showcase of live musicianship, a reminder of the power and excitement of a great rock band firing on all cylinders. For many fans, these shows will be their first opportunity to hear the new material from “Give Us The Moon” performed live, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the tour.
As the release date draws nearer, the rock world waits with bated breath. Will “Give Us The Moon” see The Night Flight Orchestra continue their winning streak of critically acclaimed albums? Will it mark a new evolution in their sound? One thing is certain: with their track record of delivering high-energy performances and chart-topping hits, this next phase for the Swedish rockers is sure to be nothing short of spectacular.
Stay tuned for more updates on “Give Us The Moon” and The Night Flight Orchestra’s upcoming European
tour. In a music landscape that often feels fragmented and niche, The Night Flight Orchestra continues to prove that great rock music has the power to unite and inspire. As they set their sights on the moon, fans around the world are ready to join them on this exciting new journey.

Kerry King
By Nathan Pugh
In a seismic announcement that has sent shockwaves through the metal community, thrash legend Kerry King has unveiled plans for his highly anticipated “North American Headline Tour 2025.” The former Slayer guitarist, known for his blistering riffs and uncompromising dedication to heavy metal, is set to embark on a continentspanning journey that promises to be one of the most talked-about tours of the year.
The tour, supporting King’s debut solo album “From Hell I Rise,” is scheduled to ignite on January 15, 2025, in the hallowed ground of San Francisco’s metal scene. From there, it will blaze a trail across 28 cities, leaving a wake of thunderous applause and ringing ears before reaching its climactic finale at the House of Blues in Las Vegas on February 22. This extensive run comes on the heels of King’s recent triumphs, including a successful tour alongside metal titans Lamb of God and Mastodon, as well as his first headline tour in Europe earlier this year.
King’s new musical arsenal is nothing short of a metal aficionado’s dream team. The lineup features the precision drumming of Paul Bostaph, a longtime collaborator from Slayer, the thunderous bass lines of Kyle Sanders from HELLYEAH, the razor-sharp guitar work of Phil Demmel, known for his tenure with Machine Head, and the powerful vocals of Mark Osegueda from Death Angel. This combination of talent promises to deliver performances that will not only meet but exceed the high expectations set by King’s legendary status in the metal world.
Adding fuel to the already blazing fire, the tour will feature Special Guest Municipal Waste, known for their highenergy thrash revival sound, and support from the young and fierce Alien Weaponry, bringing their unique blend of Te Reo M?ori lyrics and groove metal. This carefully curated lineup ensures that ticket holders will experience a night of metal that spans generations and subgenres, providing a comprehensive showcase of the genre’s evolution and enduring power.
Metal Icon Kerry King Announces Massive 2025 North American Headline Tour and Releases New Music Video Where I Reign
Tickets for this metal extravaganza are set to go on sale Friday, October 4 at 10 AM local time. Given King’s storied career and the pent-up demand from fans who have eagerly awaited his return to the stage, these shows are expected to sell out rapidly. Metal enthusiasts are advised to mark their calendars and be ready to secure their spots for what is shaping up to be a series of unforgettable nights.
In a move that has further stoked the flames of anticipation, King has simultaneously released a brand new music video for the track “Where I
Reign” from his solo album. The video, shot in stark black and white, was directed by Jim Louvau, who has previously collaborated with King on videos for the tracks “Residue” and “Toxic.” Louvau’s vision for the video was clear: to capture the raw, unbridled energy that King and his band bring to their live performances.
“I wanted to capture the fury and the energy of the band in a live setting,” Louvau explained. “An intensity that is matched from a visual standpoint that matches the intensity of the song and the

energy that the band brings each and every night on tour.” The result is a visceral visual experience that serves as a tantalizing preview of what fans can expect from the upcoming tour.
The anticipation surrounding King’s return to the stage is palpable, with recent live reviews singing praises of his performances. South Florida Insider lauded King’s “intricate guitar work and commanding stage presence,” reaffirming his status as a metal legend. Meanwhile, Loud Haller reported from a show in Richmond, VA, that “from the second King stepped out on stage, the crowd went absolutely wild and never let up the entire set,” highlighting the electric atmosphere that follows King wherever he performs.
King himself is not taking this return to the road lightly. After an unprecedented five-year break from touring, he acknowledges the challenges and excitement of getting back into the groove. “Getting back on the road for the first time in five years wasn’t exactly like riding a bike, that’s for sure,” King admitted with characteristic candor. “I’ve never had that much time off, but the first tours with my new band – in the UK and Europe, and then in America with Lamb of God and Mastodon - were all total blasts.”
For the upcoming headline tour, King is promising an expanded repertoire and potentially some surprises for long-time fans. “We’ll be playing a longer set than we did with Lamb of God and Mastodon,” he revealed. “We might put an extra Slayer song into the set and learn a cover song or two.” This news has sparked speculation and excitement among fans, who are eager to hear how King will blend his new material with nods to his iconic past.
King’s influence on the metal scene extends far beyond his groundbreaking work with Slayer. Throughout his career, he has made notable guest appearances with a diverse array of artists, showcasing his versatility and wide-ranging impact on music. One of his most famous collaborations came early in his career when he laid down the guitar solo for the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep till Brooklyn.” This crossover between metal and hip-hop helped bridge genres and exposed King’s guitar work to a broader audience.
The story behind King’s appearance in the “No Sleep till Brooklyn” video is now the stuff of legend. Initially, the concept called for King to be knocked offstage by a gorilla, but the guitarist had other ideas. “If there’s gonna be anyone knocking anyone offstage, it’ll be me knocking the
gorilla,” King declared, and that’s exactly what happened in the final cut.
King’s guest appearances have continued throughout his career, including a notable contribution to Pantera’s “Goddamn Electric” from their 2000 album “Reinventing the Steel.” The recording of King’s solo for this track has become a famous anecdote in metal circles, as it was reportedly recorded in Pantera’s backstage bathroom at Ozzfest 1999 in Dallas, showcasing the often impromptu and DIY nature of collaborations in the metal world.
Beyond his musical collaborations, King has also dipped his toes into the world of film. He made an appearance in the 2009 movie “Brooklyn’s Finest” as a member of a SWAT team, and more recently, he featured in the 2022 film “Studio 666” as a character named Krug. These forays into acting demonstrate King’s willingness to explore creative avenues beyond music, though his heart clearly remains with his first love –heavy metal.
As the metal community eagerly counts down the days to the “North American Headline Tour 2025,” it’s evident that Kerry King’s legacy in the genre is far from being written in stone. With a new album that UK’s Kerrang! magazine describes as embodying the phrase “metal as f*ck,” and a tour that promises to be one of the most intense and uncompromising of the year, King is poised to remind the world why he remains one of the most revered and influential figures in metal music.
The upcoming tour is more than just a series of concerts; it’s a testament to the enduring power of metal and the unwavering dedication of its fans. As venues across North America prepare to host Kerry King and his formidable new band, the anticipation builds for what will undoubtedly be a tour for the ages. From die-hard Slayer fans to new generations of metal enthusiasts, audiences are gearing up for an assault on the senses that only Kerry King can deliver.

In a delightful announcement that’s sure to bring joy to music lovers and holiday enthusiasts alike, legendary singer-songwriter Christopher Cross is set to re-release his cherished holiday album, “A Christopher Cross Christmas.” The album, which has become a seasonal staple since its original release in 2007, will be available on CD starting December 6, 2024, with a special edition white vinyl hitting stores on November 29 for Record Store Day Black Friday.
Cross, whose velvet voice and masterful songwriting have earned him both Grammy and Oscar accolades, first burst onto the music scene in 1979 with his self-titled debut album. That groundbreaking release included timeless classics like “Ride Like the Wind,” “Sailing,” and “Never Be the Same,” which not only dominated the charts but also secured Cross a place in music history. His debut earned him five Grammy Awards in 1981, a feat that remained unmatched by a new artist until Billie Eilish’s sweep nearly four decades later.
“A Christopher Cross Christmas” was originally recorded in 2007, a collaboration with producer Danny O’Lannerghty (known for his work with Amy Grant and Phil Keaggy) and the acclaimed Michael Omartian, who produced Cross’s debut album and has worked with industry giants like Donna Summer and Rod Stewart. The album features a mix of original compositions and Cross’s unique takes on beloved holiday classics such as “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” and the Charlie Brown Christmas favorite, “Christmas Time Is Here.”
The re-release of this holiday gem comes at a perfect time, allowing a new generation of listeners to experience Cross’s smooth, sophisticated sound in the context of beloved Christmas melodies. For long-time fans, it’s an opportunity to revisit a treasured album that may have been difficult to find in recent years.
Omnivore Recordings and Seeker Music are behind this special re-release, ensuring that the album will be widely available for the 2024 holiday season. The decision to include a special white vinyl edition for Record Store Day Black Friday is particularly exciting for vinyl enthusiasts and collectors, offering a unique way to experience Cross’s holiday magic.
Grammy and Oscar Winner Christopher Cross Unwraps Holiday Classic for 2024
Christopher Cross’s journey in the music industry is a testament to his enduring talent and adaptability. From his meteoric rise in the early 1980s with hits like “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” - which earned him an Academy Award - to his continued touring and recording in recent decades, Cross has maintained a dedicated fanbase and a respected position in the music world.
While the spotlight of MTV and changing musical tastes may have shifted the landscape of popular music in the mid-1980s, Cross’s commitment to his craft never wavered. He has consistently released new material and toured, with albums like “Doctor Faith” (2011), “Secret Ladder” (2014), and “Take Me as I Am” (2017) showcasing his evolving artistry.
The re-release of “A Christopher Cross Christmas” is not just a nod to nostalgia; it’s a celebration of timeless music that continues to resonate with listeners. As Cross himself playfully notes in one of his original holiday compositions, “Does It Feel Like Christmas?” With this album spinning on turntables and playing through stereos this upcoming holiday season, it certainly will.

The music world is buzzing with anticipation as rising multidisciplinary artist Annahstasia announces her forthcoming EP, “Surface Tension,” set to be released on November 1st via the Secretly affiliate label drink sum wtr. This exciting revelation comes alongside the release of her new single, “Stress Test,” complete with an accompanying lyrical visualizer, offering fans a tantalizing preview of what’s to come.
“Stress Test” marks the beginning of a new chapter in Annahstasia’s artistic journey, following her self-released EP “Revival” from last year. The single showcases her signature soulful, poetic folk songcraft, characterized by impeccable vocal control and haunting melodies that linger in the listener’s mind long after the last note fades.
The track’s arrangement is a masterful study in musical tension and release. It opens with sparse instrumentation, gradually building in complexity as keys, bass, saxophone, and percussion join the mix, all revolving around the core of Annahstasia’s evocative guitar work. This gradual layering of sound mirrors the emotional depth and complexity of the song’s themes.
Lyrically, “Stress Test” draws an inspired parallel between the rarest gems and the human experience of love and resilience. Eschewing the cultural obsession with diamonds, Annahstasia instead focuses on amber and pearls - natural treasures that require life itself to form. This metaphor serves as a powerful undercurrent to the song’s exploration of personal growth through adversity.

Annahstasia shared, “The Universe tests you to see if you break. To see if you’ve learned your lessons. This song is about the games we play with each other in the process both consciously and unconsciously. The residual of every heartbreak and trauma becomes a part of you from the moment it happens, going forward. So you can’t change that, but you have all this new information. What will you do with it?”
Born Annahstasia Enuke, the LA-based artist’s journey in the music industry began at the age of 17 when she was discovered and thrust into the entertainment world, complete with its often stifling pressures. This early experience taught her valuable lessons about artistic resilience and creative intention, shaping her approach to her craft. “I’ve come into the power of my voice as a medium,” she says. “As a tool of expression, I am able to shape the emotional space around me.”
The upcoming EP, “Surface Tension,” represents Annahstasia at her most intentional. Recorded at the legendary Shangri-la studio in Malibu with producer Jason Lader and a roster of accomplished musicians, the project embraces a slower, more contemplative sound. Its threepart structure traces what Annahstasia describes as “a romantic war,” exploring the unsustainable nature of past relationships.
The recording sessions for “Surface Tension” were a blend of measured consideration and spontaneous creativity, taking place in a setting Annahstasia had dreamed of for years. This environment allowed her to create open-hearted material with vocals placed front and center, as she explored the full capacity of her gift with newfound artistic latitude.

Hamilton’s Blues Virtuoso
By Robert Wilkins
In the gritty, steel-town landscape of Hamilton, Ontario, a powerful voice has re-emerged, breathing new life into the blues scene. Alfie Smith, the city’s beloved troubadour, has ended a ten-year recording hiatus with the release of his eighth album, “Every Rome Needs A Nero,” on October 25th, 2024. This long-awaited offering not only showcases Smith’s evolution as an artist but also cements his status as a formidable force in the Canadian blues landscape.
Smith, a triple threat known for his guitar virtuosity, eloquent songwriting, and commanding vocals, has long been a fixture on Ontario’s blues, folk, and roots festival circuit. His return to the recording arena finds him at the zenith of his creative powers, delivering a collection of songs that resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers to his music.
“Every Rome Needs A Nero” is a testament to Smith’s musical prowess and storytelling ability. The album features eight original compositions alongside two carefully chosen covers, each track layered with the rich textures of Smith’s instrumental mastery and his distinctively deep voice - a sound that seems to emerge from the very bedrock of the blues tradition.

The title track and opening cut, “Every Rome Needs A Nero,” sets the stage for the album’s journey. With its cool trumpet solo, crisp acoustic guitar, and laid-back vibe, the song immediately draws listeners into Smith’s world. His vocals lock into a mellow groove while the lyrics, peppered with historical references, speak to contemporary issues, showcasing Smith’s ability to bridge past and present through his music.
One of the album’s standout tracks, “East End Girl,” serves as both a love song and a heartfelt tribute to Hamilton. Smith’s lyrics are filled with local references, name-checking landmarks like Gage Park and events such as the Festival of Friends and Supercrawl. “I like songs that mention a place as they give you an image,” Smith explains, his words painting a vivid picture of the city that has shaped his life and music.
The album also features a new rendition of “All The Blues I Need,” a song previously recorded on Smith’s 2014 duo album with his wife, Nicole Christian. This version, infused with trumpet and rollicking piano, captures a New Orleans feel - a nod to the city where Smith and Christian were married by a riverboat captain on the last remaining operating steamboat.

Alfie Smith
(continued from previous page)
Smith’s growth as a songwriter is evident in tracks like “Stupid Fool,” a mellow acoustic blues number born from his desire to be a better partner. “Sometimes your wife may just be wanting to tell you her problem. She doesn’t want you to tell her how to fix it, she just wants you to listen,” Smith reflects, demonstrating the personal insights that inform his songwriting.
The album’s musical palette is further enriched by Smith’s masterful guitar work. An avid collector of vintage instruments, Smith employs a 1935 National and a Reselectric guitar on the record, explaining, “I got into instruments with character. 80-year-old wood sounds different than 5-year-old wood.” This devotion to authentic sound is palpable throughout the album.
Smith’s original compositions are complemented by fresh interpretations of two classic tunes. Elizabeth Cotton’s revered folk-blues “Shake Sugaree” is given new life with haunting trumpet, crisp guitar, and Smith’s mellow vocals. The album closes with a poignant cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Bird On A Wire,” featuring piano, muted trumpet, and National guitar creating a somber, affecting ambience.
The rich tapestry of “Every Rome Needs A Nero” is woven together by a stellar cast of Hamilton musicians. Trumpeter Troy Dowding, pianist Jesse O’Brien, drummer Dave Gould, bassist Justine Fischer, Brandon Bliss on B3 organ, and backing vocalists Melissa Marchese and Jenni Pleau all contribute their talents, creating a full-bodied sound that perfectly complements Smith’s guitar work and resonant vocals.
The story behind the album’s creation is as compelling as the music itself. Born from an unlikely alliance between Smith and the hard rock band Monster Truck, the record was produced by the band’s keyboardist, Brandon Bliss. This collaboration allowed Smith the rare luxury of unhurried studio time, recording throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in Monster Truck’s studio.
“With this one, because there was no financial pressure, I was able to invite friends in to play on just one thing at a time, back when we were all locked up,” Smith explains. This relaxed approach is evident in the warm, organic feel of the album, a stark contrast to the timepressured recording sessions of his earlier works.
Bliss, so impressed with the final product, chose “Every Rome Needs A Nero” as the flagship release for his new independent label, Gilded Tooth Records. “Once it was done, it was obvious to me that whoever’s ears we could get this to would admire Alfie the same way Hamilton has for the last few decades,” Bliss enthuses.
Smith’s journey to this point has been one of dedication and perseverance. Born and raised in Hamilton, he embodies the city’s working-class ethos and gritty character. “I’ve never had a day job, and have been able to make a living as a fulltime musician and have always owned my own home,” Smith says with pride, a testament to both his talent and work ethic.
His resume reads like a who’s who of Ontario’s blues and folk festival circuit, with appearances at Mariposa, Home County, Winterfolk, Harbourfront Blues Festival, and Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival, among others. In the colder months, Smith can be found playing bars and theatres across the province, with yearly shows in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, rounding out his performance calendar.
Smith’s talents have not gone unnoticed by the industry. He’s received 12
nominations from The Hamilton Music Awards in the Best Male Vocalist and Best Guitarist categories. The Toronto Blues Society selected him to represent them at the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2010. His instrumental prowess has also earned him endorsements from Goldtone Banjos, Godin Guitar, and Goodman Guitars, the latter even naming a guitar model after him.
With “Every Rome Needs A Nero,” Alfie Smith has crafted an album that not only honors his blues roots but also pushes the boundaries of the genre. It’s a record that speaks to the human experience - love, loss, anger, and hope - all filtered through Smith’s unique artistic lens and grounded in the fabric of his beloved Hamilton.
As the album makes its way into the world, it carries with it the potential to elevate Smith from a regional treasure to a nationally recognized artist. Brandon Bliss’s declaration that “So many more people need to hear this guy!” seems less like hyperbole and more like a prediction. For blues aficionados and music lovers alike, “Every Rome Needs A Nero” is not just an album - it’s an event, marking the return of a singular talent and the next chapter in the ongoing story of Canadian blues.
CANDY Unleashes “FLIPPING” EP: A Hedonistic Journey Through Heavy Soundscapes
By Albert Schwartz
In a year already marked by groundbreaking releases in the heavy music scene, CANDY has once again raised the bar with their latest offering. The band’s second record of 2024, the EP “FLIPPING,” has just been unleashed upon the world via Triple B Records, sending shockwaves through the hardcore and metal communities. This release arrives as a powerful follow-up to CANDY’s electrifying album “It’s Inside You,” released earlier this year. While many bands might have rested on their laurels after dropping a full-length album, CANDY has demonstrated an insatiable creative drive, pushing their sonic boundaries even further with this new EP.
“FLIPPING” is a six-track release
described by the band as a “palpable turn toward hedonism and release,” expanding upon the wire-twisting universe established in “It’s Inside You.” This shift in focus showcases CANDY’s willingness to explore new thematic territories while maintaining the intense, genre-defying sound that has become their hallmark. The EP is a potent blend of old and new, weaving between classic heavy stylings and the band’s signature metal-warping, digitally-coated hardcore. This fusion creates a soundscape that is at once familiar and entirely novel, challenging listeners’ expectations at every turn.
Fans got their first taste of this new direction with the EP’s lead single, “Football.” Accompanied by a visually striking and conceptually intriguing visualizer created by lead guitarist
Michael Quick, the track set the stage for the mind-bending journey that “FLIPPING” promises to be. The single’s release generated significant buzz within the heavy music community, with fans and critics alike eagerly anticipating the full EP.
“FLIPPING” is more than just a collection of songs; it’s a cohesive exploration of self-destruction and escape. The band describes the album’s six tracks as “intoxicating as the unidentifiable cocktail of uppers and psychedelics taken at the afters and as crushing as the feelings of self-loathing that creep in during the comedown.”
This visceral description paints a vivid picture of the EP’s emotional landscape, suggesting a raw and unflinching look at

the darker aspects of human experience. It’s a brave artistic choice that positions CANDY as not just musicians, but cultural commentators unafraid to delve into the shadows of modern existence.
The cover art, created by Andrew Barnes, visually represents these themes, depicting the long-term global effects of America’s ritualistic pleasure-seeking habits. This striking imagery serves as the perfect visual companion to the aural assault contained within the EP. The artwork has already sparked discussions among fans, who are dissecting its symbolism and connection to the EP’s overarching themes.
The sonic architecture of “FLIPPING” was crafted under the expert guidance of producer/engineer Kurt Ballou at the renowned God City Studios. Ballou, known for his work with heavy hitters like NAILS, High on Fire, and The Armed, has helped CANDY achieve a mix that’s described as “loud and abrasive as the sound system in a Vegas strip club.” This description hints at the intentional sensory overload that listeners can expect from “FLIPPING.” It’s clear that CANDY and Ballou have worked to create an immersive audio experience that matches the intensity of the EP’s themes and the band’s live performances.
To fully appreciate the significance of “FLIPPING,” it’s worth tracing CANDY’s artistic journey. The band burst onto the scene in 2018 with their debut album “Good To Feel,” which included standout tracks like the title track and “Lust For Destruction.” This release established CANDY as a force to be reckoned with in the hardcore scene, garnering attention for their uncompromising sound and boundary-pushing approach to heavy music.
In 2019, the band released the stand-alone singles “Super-Stare” and “Win Free Love,” which served as a sonic bridge to their next full-length album. These tracks hinted at the band’s evolving sound and willingness to experiment with different elements of hardcore and metal. 2022 saw the arrival of “Heaven Is Here,” an album that The FADER aptly described as “hardcore that sounds like a nuclear meltdown.” Tracks like “Human Condition Above Human Opinion” and “World of Shit” further cemented CANDY’s reputation for
pushing genre boundaries and delivering intense, thought-provoking music.
Earlier this year, CANDY released “It’s Inside You,” featuring collaborations with artists like Justice Tripp, MIRSY, and mmph. This album, with standout tracks such as “Dreams Less Sweet” and “Love Like Snow,” set the stage for the hedonistic turn we see in “FLIPPING.” The quick succession of releases demonstrates CANDY’s prolific nature and their commitment to continual artistic growth.
CANDY’s lineup consists of principal songwriter and guitarist Michael Quick, vocalist and lyricist Zak Quiram, drummer Steve DiGenio, and bassist Drew Stark. This core group has been instrumental in shaping the band’s unique sound and vision, with each member bringing their own influences and expertise to the table. Their collaborative approach to songwriting and performance has resulted in a cohesive yet diverse body of work that continues to evolve with each release.
The band’s live performances are legendary for their intensity and raw energy. Fresh off their headline tour with support from Jivebomb and Taraneh (and additional support from Extinguish, Gumm, and ZULU on select dates),
CANDY has already proven their ability to captivate audiences across North America. The tour in support of “It’s Inside You” saw the band playing to packed venues, with fans eagerly moshing and singing along to both new material and old favorites.
Looking ahead, CANDY shows no signs of slowing down. This November and December, the band will embark on an even more ambitious venture, joining thrash metal legends EXODUS for a massive 27-date North American tour. This pairing promises to deliver some of the most intense live shows of the year, bridging generations of heavy music fans. The tour will give CANDY the opportunity to showcase the material from “FLIPPING” to larger audiences, potentially expanding their fanbase even further.
The decision to tour with EXODUS is an interesting one, highlighting CANDY’s respect for the roots of heavy music while simultaneously pushing the genre forward. It’s a testament to their versatility as performers and their ability to connect with diverse audiences within the metal and hardcore scenes.

As CANDY continues to garner critical acclaim and a growing fanbase, “FLIPPING” stands as a testament to their artistic vision and relentless drive. The EP’s release and the upcoming tour with EXODUS cement CANDY’s position as one of the most exciting and innovative bands in the heavy music scene today. Their willingness to experiment with sound, tackle challenging themes, and maintain a grueling tour schedule demonstrates a commitment to their craft that is rare in today’s music industry.
For those yet to experience CANDY’s unique blend of hardcore and experimental metal, “FLIPPING” serves as an excellent entry point. The EP’s compact format makes it accessible to new listeners while still offering plenty
of depth for long-time fans to explore. And for those who have been following CANDY’s journey from the beginning, it’s a thrilling next chapter in the band’s ever-evolving story.
As CANDY prepares to take their new material on the road, anticipation is building among fans and critics alike. Will “FLIPPING” mark a new era for the band? How will these songs translate to the live setting, especially when paired with EXODUS’s thrash metal classics? These questions and more will be answered in the coming months as CANDY continues to make their mark on the heavy music landscape.
One thing is certain: with the release of “FLIPPING” and their upcoming tour, CANDY has firmly
established themselves as a band that refuses to be ignored. Their unique vision, relentless energy, and willingness to push boundaries ensure that they will remain a vital force in heavy music for years to come. Birmingham’s Empire Springs Unleashes “Hollow”: A Metalcore Masterpiece Heralding Their Ambitious New Album
By Robert Wilkins
In the ever-evolving landscape of modern metal, Birmingham, Alabama’s Empire Springs has emerged as a formidable force, blending the raw energy of metalcore with the intricate compositions of progressive rock. On Friday, October 25, the quartet released their latest single, “Hollow,” a tour de force that showcases their musical prowess and sets the stage for their highly anticipated six-track LP, “Attrition,” slated for release in 2025.
“Hollow” is a testament to Empire
Springs’ virtuosic guitar work, featuring blistering riffs and intricate solos that drive the song’s intense musicality. The single delivers an electrifying metal experience that pushes the boundaries of the genre, cementing the band’s reputation as innovators in the rock world.
Empire Springs, comprised of bassist/vocalist Brett Bellomy, guitarist Michael Naro, keyboardist Chadwick McDowell, and drummer Ethan Standard, has been on a meteoric rise since their formation. What began as a studio project between college friends has evolved into a cohesive unit that’s
capturing the attention of metal enthusiasts and critics alike.
The band’s journey to “Hollow” and the upcoming “Attrition” LP has been marked by critical acclaim and artistic growth. Their 2022 debut album, “The Luminescence,” garnered praise from respected publications such as Prog Magazine, Goldmine, and Metal Storm, establishing Empire Springs as one of rock’s most exciting new acts.

“Attrition” promises to delve deeper into the band’s progressive roots through a metalcore lens. The project has been significantly influenced by their collaboration with producers John Douglass and Eric Guenther of The Contortionist, pushing Empire Springs to refine their craft and explore new sonic territories.
Guitarist Michael Naro sheds light on the thematic underpinnings of “Attrition,” explaining, “I felt it was necessary to center the overarching concept around fighting a war of attrition — being adaptable enough to experience and overcome challenges under everchanging conditions.” This theme of resilience and adaptation is palpable in “Hollow,” reflecting the band’s personal and artistic evolution.
The path to “Hollow” has been paved with notable releases. On June 7, Empire Springs unveiled “Golden,” the lead single from “Attrition,” exclusively via MXDWN. The track, complete with instrumental breakdowns, intricate guitar lines, and anthemic choruses, set a new benchmark for the band’s songwriting prowess.
Following “Golden,” the band released “Treading Water,” premiered by Outburn Magazine. This track further showcased Empire Springs’ ability to craft complex, emotionally resonant music, featuring melodic guitar lines weaving through relentless drum patterns and intricate harmonies, culminating in a powerful, distorted breakdown.
Empire Springs’ sound is a carefully crafted fusion of influences, drawing inspiration from iconic acts such as Circa Survive, Dream Theater, Coheed and Cambria, Spiritbox, Erra, and Dayseeker. This diverse palette of inspirations has helped shape their distinctive sound, which seamlessly blends soaring synths, thundering drums, and complex guitar riffs into a dynamic mix of melodic hooks and fierce
rhythms.
Bassist and vocalist Brett Bellomy expresses the band’s aspirations, stating, “We would love for people to discover the same kinds of inspiration in our music that we got from so many of our favorite artists.” This sentiment underscores Empire Springs’ commitment to not only creating compelling music but also inspiring the next generation of musicians.
As they continue to evolve, Empire Springs remains dedicated to pushing their musical boundaries. The band is constantly exploring new ways to integrate intricate guitar riffs with dynamic drum fills and polished lyrics. Reflecting on their work on “Attrition,” Naro shares, “We hope that our listeners can connect and see themselves in what we feel is our best release to date.”
With “Hollow” now available and “Attrition” on the horizon, Empire Springs stands at the forefront of a new era in rock music. Their unique blend of
metalcore intensity and progressive complexity is carving out a distinct niche in the metal landscape, appealing to fans across the rock spectrum.
As anticipation builds for the full release of “Attrition” in 2025, “Hollow” serves as a tantalizing glimpse into the future of metal. It’s a future where technical proficiency meets raw emotion, where complex arrangements coexist with catchy hooks, and where Empire Springs leads the charge into uncharted musical territories.
For fans of innovative, high-octane metal, Empire Springs’ “Hollow” is not just a song – it’s a declaration of intent from a band poised to redefine the boundaries of modern rock. As they continue to hone their craft and push their limits, Empire Springs is undoubtedly a band to watch in the coming years.

In a triumphant return to the forefront of the rock scene, legendary Danish band Fate has unleashed their highly anticipated new studio album, “Reconnect ‘N Ignite,” released on Friday, October 18th, 2024, via Frontiers Music Srl. This latest offering from the veteran rockers promises to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike with its powerful blend of classic and modern rock elements.
Fate’s current lineup showcases a wealth of talent and experience, featuring Peer Johansson’s powerful vocals, Torben Enevoldsen’s brilliant guitar work, Peter Steincke’s solid bass lines, Søren Ryan’s dynamic
drumming, and Patrik Törnblom’s classy keyboard arrangements. This combination of skilled musicians has resulted in an album that reflects the band’s maturity and musical prowess, while still maintaining the energy and passion that has defined Fate throughout their career.
Guitarist Torben Enevoldsen expressed the band’s excitement about the new release, saying, “We are very much looking forward to ‘Reconnect ‘N Ignite,’ and can’t wait for everyone to hear the new songs. We are all very excited about the new material and are anxious to present it to our fans, old and new ones alike!” This enthusiasm is evident in the album’s lead single, “Around The Sun,” which has already begun to
generate buzz among rock enthusiasts.
Fate’s journey to this point has been one of perseverance and evolution. Originally formed in late 1984 in Copenhagen by Hank Sherman after his departure from Mercyful Fate, the band quickly made a name for themselves with their self-titled debut album in 1985. Their initial success with Danish EMI set the stage for a career that would span nearly four decades.
However, the band’s path was not without its challenges. In 1988, Fate experienced their first major lineup change when founding

member Hank Sherman left the group. This departure ushered in a difficult period for the band, testing their resolve and musical direction.
The turning point came in 1990 with the release of “Scratch N Sniff.” This album marked a return to Fate’s strongest sound and showcased a more mature band. A significant factor in this resurgence was the addition of powerhouse singer Peer Johansson, whose vocal prowess brought a new dimension to Fate’s music. Johansson’s contributions to “Scratch N Sniff” were instrumental in revitalizing the band’s sound and appeal.
Following successful tours in 1990 and 1991, Fate welcomed talented guitarist Søren Hoff to their ranks. The band began recording new demos, but unfortunately, this iteration of Fate would not last, and the group eventually split up.
However, the story of Fate was far from over. In 2005, the band reunited for a performance at the prestigious Deep Impact Festival in Germany. The overwhelmingly positive response from fans and media alike inspired the band to continue their musical journey. This revival led to the release of “V” in 2006, signaling Fate’s triumphant return to the rock scene.
The band’s lineup continued to evolve, with Danish guitar hero Torben Enevoldsen (known for his work with Section A and Fatal Force) replacing Søren Hoff in early 2011. This new configuration of Fate went on to record “Ghost From The Past” and later, in 2013, “If Not For The Devil.” These albums, along with “V,” were recently re-issued digitally, including four previously unreleased bonus tracks, much to the delight of longtime fans.
Now, with “Reconnect ‘N Ignite,” Fate demonstrates that they
are in a true state of grace. The album showcases Torben Enevoldsen’s brilliant guitar work, supported by a tight rhythm section and complemented by classy synth arrangements. At the forefront is Peer Johansson’s amazing voice, once again proving his incredible talent and cementing his place as one of rock’s most distinctive vocalists.
Early standouts from the album include “Reason For Everything,” a track that the band believes will resonate with fans for a long time to come. This song, along with the rest of the album, represents the culmination of Fate’s journey - a perfect blend of their classic sound and contemporary rock sensibilities.
As Fate embarks on this new chapter in their storied career, “Reconnect ‘N Ignite” stands as a testament to their enduring passion for rock music and their ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. The album title itself seems to encapsulate the band’s ethos -
reconnecting with their musical heritage while igniting a new fire in their sound.
For rock fans around the world, October 18th, 2024, marks not just the release of a new album, but the rekindling of a musical flame that has burned brightly for nearly four decades. With “Reconnect ‘N Ignite,” Fate proves once again why they are considered legends in the Danish rock scene and beyond, promising an exciting new era for the band and their devoted followers.

The band’s statement on their cultural roots sets the tone for their mission: “We are proud to be part of

Graves of the Monuments and Born of Winter to name a few. We hope to continue to grow as a band and, as musicians, to continue to bring recognition to the talent that is within the Native American heavy music community.”
Under Exile’s lineup consists of five talented musicians, all deeply rooted in their Dine’/Navajo heritage: Ryland Benally and Rumeel Jim on guitars, Wyatt Billie on drums, Franklin Yazzie on vocals, and Trevor Martin on bass. Formed in 2015 when its members were still teenagers, the band has rapidly ascended the ranks of the metal scene.
The new single “Meira” showcases Under Exile’s evolution since their earlier releases. The band shares insight into the song’s themes: “The song lyrics take a nihilistic view on human existence, with the take that any truths, historical/ cultural stories or other ‘meaning’ will ultimately be insignificant because of humans’ destructive tendencies proven through history that continue to be prevalent in the world now.”
Under Exile’s journey has been marked by impressive achievements. They’ve opened for major acts such as Fear Factory, In Flames, All That Remains, Bad Omens, Slaughter to Prevail, Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, Carnifex, Winds of Plague, Attila, Super Joint Ritual, Gideon, Oceano, Alien Weaponry, and Soulfly, among others. Their festival appearances span across Florida, California, Colorado, and Arizona, including notable events like the Four Corners Metal Festival, Navajo Nation Metal Fest, Treasure Fest, and The Seminole Tribe Music Festival.
The band’s discography includes their first project in 2015 titled “Self Imposed Exile,” followed by the concept album “Make Your Peace With It” in 2017. After a brief hiatus from 2019-2022, Under Exile reformed with their original core lineup, bringing in Trevor Martin as their official bass player and additional songwriter in 2023.
“Meira” is the fifth single released from their latest recording session, produced by Billboardcharting producer Erik Jensen of Escape the Fate in Arizona. The music video was filmed at Bunkhouse Studios in Albuquerque, NM, with director Jacob Reynolds bringing the band’s vision to life.
Under Exile’s sound is characterized by punchy guitar playing from Ryland Benally and Rumeel Jim, the thumping rhythm of drummer Wyatt Billie and bassist Trevor Martin, and the hellacious vocals of Franklin Yazzie. As noted in the
provided information, “these guys should frankly already be on your radar if you’re a fan of that modern metalcore sound..
The band’s Native American heritage is an integral part of their identity, but it’s their musical prowess that demands attention. As stated in the original information, “And while it’s great to be able to highlight another Native American metal band, that’s not why you should be paying attention to them. Their new single ‘Meira’, which you can check out below, is a hard hitter that could stand up next to some of the genre’s biggest names.
With “Meira,” Under Exile continues to push boundaries in the metal world, proving that some of the most exciting sounds in the genre are emerging from unexpected places. As they forge ahead, they stand as a powerful representation of both their Navajo heritage and the evolving landscape of modern metalcore..

has been making waves in the global metal scene with their innovative sound that defies genre boundaries. The band’s journey from New Delhi to worldwide recognition is a testament to their musical prowess and the universal appeal

of their cultural fusion.
To celebrate this momentous signing, Bloodywood has released a new single titled “Nu Delhi,” accompanied by a visually striking music video. The track serves as both an introduction to the band’s history and a tribute to their home city of New Delhi. “Nu Delhi” showcases Bloodywood’s signature style, featuring a potent mix of guttural vocals, hip-hop-influenced verses, and frenetic rhythms. The song adeptly navigates multiple musical genres, reflecting the diverse cultural tapestry of New Delhi itself.
Discussing the new single, the band shared, “New Delhi, known as the melting pot of India, is arguably one of the most diverse cities on the planet. With a history that has seen as much bloodshed as it has peace and celebration, it made for the perfect womb to birth this band.” They added, “The contrasting visuals, cultures, and backgrounds thriving within the city is accurately reflected in our music — where genres that cannot work together on paper...somehow do.”
Bloodywood’s rise to prominence is a fascinating tale of internet virality meeting musical innovation. The band first gained attention through their YouTube channel, where multi-instrumentalist and producer Karan Katiyar and vocalist Jayant Bhadula showcased their early work. Their breakthrough came in 2018 with their rendition of “Ari Ari,” a Punjabi folk song that they reimagined with a metal twist, featuring rapper Raoul Kerr.
The success of “Ari Ari” was followed by their first original song, “Jee Veerey,” which solidified their unique sound and message. Subsequent releases like “Endurant” and “Machi Bhasad (Expect A Riot)” further established their reputation for combining heavy sounds with socially conscious lyrics.
Bloodywood’s live performances have been equally impactful. Their first tour, aptly named “Raj Against The Machine,” saw them playing sold-out shows across Europe, the UK, and Russia in 2019. This success proved that their online following could translate into real-world audience engagement.
Even during the global pandemic, Bloodywood continued to evolve their sound and message. They released songs like “Yaad” and “Gaddaar,” tackling themes ranging from personal struggles to political corruption. Their debut selfreleased album, “Rakshak,” dropped in 2022, earning them a nomination for Best International Breakthrough Artist at the Heavy Music Awards.
The band’s festival appearances have been nothing short of spectacular, with performances at major events like Lollapalooza India, Download Festival, Bloodstock (UK), Hellfest (France), Summer Breeze (Germany), Brutal Assault (Czechia), Fuji Rock (Japan), and American festivals Louder Than Life and Aftershock. These performances have cemented their status as a formidable live act on the global stage.
Bloodywood’s influence has even extended to cinema, with their song “Dana Dan” featured in a pivotal sequence of the Jordan Peele-produced action movie “Monkey Man,” directed by and starring Dev Patel, set for release in 2024.
The signing with Fearless Records comes at a time when Bloodywood is
poised for even greater international success. Known for its roster of influential alternative and metal acts, Fearless Records’ backing is likely to provide Bloodywood with the resources and platform to reach an even wider audience.
As part of their continued growth, Bloodywood has announced extensive tour plans for the UK and Europe, promising to bring their electrifying live performances to fans across the continent.
With their unique sound, powerful message, and now the backing of a major label, Bloodywood stands at the forefront of a new wave of global metal. Their journey from the streets of New Delhi to international stages is not just a story of musical success, but a testament to the power of cultural fusion in creating a truly global sound.
As they prepare to embark on this new chapter with Fearless Records, Bloodywood continues to push the boundaries of what metal can be, proving that music truly is a universal language capable of bringing people together across cultural divides.

In an exciting development for rock enthusiasts, The Discarded, the dynamic father-and-sons trio hailing from Orangeville, Ontario, have announced their highly anticipated sixth studio album, “The Green Door,” set to hit the airwaves on November 25, 2024. This forthcoming release promises to be a tour de force, showcasing the band’s evolution and their unique ability to bridge generational gaps through music.
Fans won’t have to wait long for their first taste of the new material. The band is set to drop their electrifying first single, “Testify!” on October 16th, 2024. This track encapsulates the essence of The Discarded’s sound – a potent blend of raw punk energy and soulful rock ‘n’ roll, infused with a distinctive Southern preacher vibe.
“Testify!” has an intriguing origin story that reflects the band’s collaborative spirit. Born from an impromptu jam session between guitarist JP Wasson and his son, drummer Caden, the song took on a life of its own during live performances. Bassist Jared Wasson, JP’s other son, introduced a fresh, vibrant bassline that dramatically altered the song’s dynamics. “Jared’s live counter riff added a completely new dimension to the song,” JP explains, highlighting the organic evolution of their music.
This transformation was so significant that the band decided to re-record the track, capturing the heightened intensity and newfound groove. The addition of guitarist Michael McKenzie brought another layer of complexity to “Testify!” with intricate riffs that seamlessly mesh with Jared’s bass, creating a sound reminiscent of ’60s classics like “Day Tripper.” The track is further elevated by Carmen Toth’s resonant background vocals, giving it a full, rich quality that promises to captivate listeners.
“The Green Door” represents a significant milestone in The Discarded’s musical journey. Produced by the acclaimed John Critchley, known for his work with Canadian indie darlings Elliott BROOD and Dan Mangan, the album strikes a delicate balance between polished production and raw, vibrant energy. This collaboration has allowed The Discarded to refine their sound while maintaining the gritty authenticity that has become their hallmark.
The album’s sonic landscape is a testament to the band’s diverse influences. It merges the uncompromising spirit of garage rock with the relentless drive of punk, while incorporating elements of classic rock that add depth and nostalgia to their sound. This eclectic mix creates a listening experience that is both familiar and refreshingly original.
Michael McKenzie’s contribution to the album cannot be overstated. A standout figure in the Canadian rock scene, McKenzie brings a wealth of experience to The Discarded. His impressive resume includes touring North America with Universal Honey and supporting acts like The Goo Goo Dolls, The Tragically Hip, and Alanis Morissette. His stint with The Lowest of The Low and The New Mendicants further broadened his musical palette, all of
which shines through on “The Green Door.”
The album, featuring ten original tracks, was recorded at the namesake Green Door Studios, a choice that seems both practical and symbolic of the band’s commitment to authenticity. Each song is crafted to deliver a high-energy experience that compels listeners to move, showcasing The Discarded’s ability to create music that is both intellectually engaging and physically invigorating.
In addition to the core band members, “The Green Door” features several notable guest appearances. Carmen Toth’s background vocals add depth and harmony to the tracks, while Lee Rose of Ace of Wands brings an unexpected twist with her heavy metal violin, pushing the boundaries of the band’s sound even further. These collaborations speak to The Discarded’s openness to experimentation and their desire to continually evolve their musical approach.
Visually, the album is just as striking as it is sonically. The cover art, created by talented illustrator Rachael Muir, perfectly complements the bold and eclectic nature of the music. It serves as a visual representation of the album’s themes and energy, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in The Discarded’s world before they even press play.
Since their formation in 2016, The Discarded have been making waves in the Canadian rock scene. The band’s unique lineup, featuring veteran rocker JP Wasson alongside his sons Caden Jax Wasson on drums and Jared Dean Wasson on bass, creates
a compelling dynamic that bridges the gap between classic and contemporary rock. The recent addition of Ben Keestra on guitar has further expanded their sound, adding new textures and possibilities to their already potent musical brew.
With nearly 100 live shows under their belt, The Discarded have honed their performance skills to razor sharpness. They’ve shared stages with legendary acts like The Sonics, Teenage Head, and The Forgotten Rebels, holding their own alongside these icons of rock and punk. These experiences have not only expanded their fan base but also influenced their sound, infusing their music with the raw energy and authenticity that can only come from live performance.
As the November 25th release date for “The Green Door” approaches, anticipation in the rock community is reaching a fever pitch. This album promises to be more than just a collection of songs – it’s a statement of intent from a band that refuses to be constrained by genre boundaries or generational divides. The Discarded are poised to make a significant impact with this release, cementing their place in the pantheon of Canadian rock while pushing the genre forward into exciting new territories.
For fans of punk, garage rock, and classic rock alike, “The Green Door” is shaping up to be an essential addition to their music libraries. As The Discarded prepare to unleash their latest creation upon the world, one thing is clear: the Canadian rock scene is about to get a whole lot more interesting.

voice of Slash and the Conspirators, Kennedy has consistently pushed the boundaries of modern rock. With “The Art Of Letting Go,” he appears ready to surpass even the loftiest expectations of his devoted fanbase and critics alike.
As a tantalizing prelude to the album’s release, Kennedy has unveiled “Saving Face,” the final pre-release track. This blazing rock anthem serves as a perfect encapsulation of what fans can expect from the forthcoming album. Built around Kennedy’s signature driving guitar riff, the track is elevated by Tim Tournier’s distorted bass lines and Zia Uddin’s thunderous drumming. The song’s lyrics delve deep into the human experience, exploring the importance of maintaining one’s integrity and place in the world, regardless of external pressures. It’s a powerful testament to the wisdom gained through life experience, a theme that resonates throughout the album.
Accompanying “Saving Face” is a visually striking animated lyric video that incorporates the album’s enthralling cover artwork. This visual feast not only highlights Kennedy’s poignant lyrics but also offers fans a glimpse into the aesthetic world of “The Art Of Letting Go,” hinting at the depth and complexity of the musical journey that awaits them.
From the opening guitar riff of the title track “The Art Of Letting Go” to the haunting melody of the album closer “How The Story Ends,” Kennedy takes listeners on an emotional and sonic odyssey. The album promises to be a diverse collection of songs that cater to both long-time fans and newcomers alike. Tracks like “Mr. Downside,” “Miss You When You’re Gone,” and “Eternal Lullaby” showcase the memorable storytelling that has become synonymous with Kennedy’s work across all his projects. Each song is a carefully crafted narrative, inviting listeners to lose themselves in Kennedy’s world of intricate melodies and thoughtprovoking lyrics.
The album’s debut single, the
upbeat rocker “Say What You Will,” has already made waves in the rock community. It has earned Kennedy his highest solo chart position to date and has become the most spun single of his solo career. This early success bodes well for the album as a whole, suggesting that “The Art Of Letting Go” could be Kennedy’s most impactful solo work yet.
Behind the scenes, the album marks a reunion of sorts. Kennedy is once again backed by his talented band, featuring Zia Uddin on drums and Tim Tournier on bass. This trio has developed a chemistry that is palpable in every track, creating a cohesive sound that serves as the perfect backdrop for Kennedy’s soaring vocals and intricate guitar work.
To celebrate the release of “The Art Of Letting Go,” Kennedy and his band are embarking on an extensive world tour that promises to bring the album’s energy and emotion to life on stages across the globe. The tour will kick off with a 6-date UK run in November and December 2024, featuring support from the acclaimed Devin Townsend. This pairing of two of rock’s
most respected vocalists is sure to be a highlight for fans lucky enough to secure tickets.
Following the UK dates, the tour will expand to include 20 newly announced dates across Europe starting in October. Support for these shows will come from up-and-coming acts Black River Delta and Cardinal Black, showcasing Kennedy’s commitment to supporting new talent in the rock scene.
The tour’s reach will extend well into 2025, with North American dates scheduled for January and February. These shows will feature special guest Tim Montana, ensuring that the new year will start on a high note for rock fans across the continent. The extensive nature of this tour underscores the anticipation surrounding the album and Kennedy’s enduring appeal as a live performer.

success over more than two decades. The band has become a gold-certified, arenafilling force of nature, with Kennedy at the helm.
His collaboration with Slash and The Conspirators since 2010 has further cemented his status as one of rock’s most versatile and powerful vocalists. This partnership has allowed Kennedy to showcase his range and adaptability, proving that he’s equally at home with hard-driving guitar rock as he is with more melodic material.
Throughout his career, Kennedy has proven to be a sought-after collaborator, lending his talents to tracks by a diverse array of artists. From hard rock acts like Disturbed, Halestorm, and Sevendust to more eclectic collaborations with Gov’t Mule and hip-hop legend Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Kennedy has shown an ability to adapt his style while always maintaining his distinctive voice. This versatility has contributed to his impressive tally of over one billion cumulative streams and multiple gold and platinum certifications worldwide.
Kennedy’s solo career, while more recent, has been equally impressive. His 2021 sophomore album, “The Ides of March,” was a commercial and critical success, debuting at #1 on multiple charts across three countries. It topped the Billboard US Top Current Hard Music Chart, the UK Official Rock &
Metal Chart and Official Independent Album Chart, and Canada’s Hard Music Albums Chart. The album garnered widespread critical acclaim, with Classic Rock Magazine awarding it 4.5 out of 5 stars and hailing Kennedy as “a musical powerhouse.”
With “The Art Of Letting Go,” Kennedy continues to push his artistic boundaries. The album is expected to showcase his growth as a songwriter and performer, building on the success of his previous solo efforts while exploring new musical territories. Kennedy’s ability to tune into the rhythm of his surroundings and go with the flow has always been a strength, and this new album promises to be his most intuitive and organic work to date.
As the October 11 release date approaches, anticipation among fans and critics alike continues to build. “The Art Of Letting Go” is poised to be not just a highlight of Kennedy’s solo career, but a significant addition to the rock landscape of 2024. The combination of Kennedy’s powerhouse vocals, open-hearted lyrics, and airtight riffs has always been a winning formula, and early indications suggest that this album will take that formula to new heights.
For fans around the world, the combination of a new album and an extensive tour offers an exciting opportunity to experience Myles Kennedy’s music in both recorded and live formats.
Whether in intimate venues or larger arenas, Kennedy’s powerful vocals and intricate guitar work promise to deliver unforgettable performances night after night.
As Myles Kennedy prepares to share “The Art Of Letting Go” with the world, it’s clear that his journey as a solo artist is far from over. With each release, he continues to evolve, pushing the boundaries of his craft and solidifying his place as one of rock’s most enduring and talented figures. In a nostalgic nod to their illustrious career spanning over three decades, alternative rock icons Jimmy Eat World are treating fans to a special autumn release that showcases the band’s evolution and enduring influence. Beginning October 21, the quartet will unveil anniversary vinyl editions of two pivotal albums from their discography: the 20th-anniversary edition of their gold-certified fifth studio album, “Futures” (2004), and the 5th-anniversary edition of their tenth studio album, “Surviving” (2019).
These limited-edition releases, available through the band’s own Exotic Location Recordings, are not mere reissues but reimagined live recordings
from their acclaimed 2021 Phoenix Sessions. This unique global streaming performance series, a partnership with Danny Wimmer Presents, was filmed at the historic Icehouse in Phoenix, capturing the raw energy and refined musicianship that has defined Jimmy Eat World throughout their career.
The “Futures: Phoenix Sessions (Chapter V)” comes as a 2-LP set on hand-poured blizzard colored vinyl. Fans will be treated to a gatefold package featuring exclusive photos by Steve Thrasher, personal notes from the band, and a special 20th-anniversary etching on side D. This release celebrates “Futures,” an album that marked a significant evolution in the band’s sound, incorporating more complex guitar parts and solos while building on the atmo-
spheric qualities of their earlier work.
Originally released on October 19, 2004, through Interscope Records, “Futures” represented a pivotal moment for Jimmy Eat World. After the success of their breakthrough album “Bleed American” (2001), the band returned to the studio with a vision to expand on the mood of their third studio album, “Clarity” (1999). The result was a record that shy away from the pop-influenced sound of its predecessor, instead embracing a darker, more complex musical landscape.
Produced by Gil Norton after initial sessions with Mark Trombino proved fruitless, “Futures” saw the band
Jimmy Eat World
(continued from previous page)
incorporating more guitar solos and intricate guitar lines, a move championed by rhythm guitarist Tom Linton. The album’s sound has been described as a blend of alternative rock, arena rock, emo, pop-punk, and power pop, drawing comparisons to bands like Jets to Brazil and Maritime, with guitar parts reminiscent of Fugazi and Hüsker Dü.
Lyrically, “Futures” delved into darker subject matter, touching on themes of despair, politics, drug abuse, and self-loathing. Frontman Jim Adkins revealed that several tracks were influenced by the presidency of George W. Bush, reflecting the political climate of the time. The album’s title itself was open to interpretation, with Adkins describing it as “pessimistic, optimistic, hopeful, and greedy all at the same time.”
The “Surviving: Phoenix Sessions (Chapter X)” will be pressed on Fade to Black colored vinyl, accompanied by an insert showcasing behind-the-scenes photos by Steve Thrasher. “Surviving,” released on October 18, 2019, represented yet another milestone for the band, blending their signature sound with elements of arena rock and pop punk.
“Surviving” came to life after the band concluded touring for their previous album, “Integrity Blues” (2016), in mid-2017. The album was recorded in the band’s home studio in Arizona, with co-producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen at the helm. Musically, “Surviving” has been described as a mix of alternative rock, arena rock, emo, pop rock, and pop punk, drawing comparisons to the band’s own “Chase This Light” (2007) and
“Damage” (2013) albums, as well as the work of the Foo Fighters.
The album’s sound was partially inspired by the band’s admiration for the production on Mötley Crüe’s “Dr. Feelgood” (1989), with Jimmy Eat World aiming to create their own version of that powerful guitar sound. The political commentary present in earlier albums like “Bleed American” and “Futures” continued in tracks like “Criminal Energy” and “Congratulations.”
“Surviving” showcased the band’s willingness to experiment, with tracks like the dance-rock infused “Delivery” and the electro-influenced “555,” which channeled pop rock in the vein of Imagine Dragons. The album also featured guest appearances, including a saxophone solo by Fitz and the Tantrums member James King on “All the Way (Stay)” and vocals from AFI frontman Davey Havok on the closing track “Congratulations.”
Both anniversary editions have been meticulously self-produced by Jimmy Eat World and mixed by frontman Jim Adkins, ensuring that these releases maintain the integrity of the original recordings while offering a fresh live energy.
This release continues a tradition for Jimmy Eat World, as fall has historically been a busy season for the band. Half of their extensive catalog has been released during autumn throughout their career. Earlier this year, in February 2024, the band celebrated the 25th anniversary of their seminal album “Clarity” with a similar Phoenix Ses-
sions release, titled “Clarity: Phoenix Sessions (Chapter III),” a limited-edition two-LP pressed on sunkissed colored vinyl.
As fans revisit these pivotal albums, they’re reminded of Jimmy Eat World’s evolution and enduring influence on the alternative rock scene. From the complex arrangements and political undertones of “Futures” to the genreblending experimentation of “Surviving,” these albums represent key moments in the band’s artistic journey.
These anniversary editions not only celebrate the band’s past achievements but also highlight their continued relevance and creativity. By presenting these albums in a live format from the Phoenix Sessions, Jimmy Eat World offers longtime fans a new way to experience familiar favorites and provides newcomers with an excellent entry point into their rich discography.
As October 21 approaches, anticipation builds among the Jimmy Eat World faithful. These vinyl releases promise to be not just collector’s items, but a testament to the band’s lasting impact on the alternative rock landscape. Whether you’re a die-hard fan who’s been there since the beginning or a recent convert to their music, these anniversary editions of “Futures” and “Surviving” offer a unique opportunity to experience Jimmy Eat World’s evolution and enduring musical prowess, capturing the essence of a band that continues to push boundaries and redefine their sound with each release.

Little Richard
By Greg Fontaine
In a monumental move that’s set to electrify the music world, Omnivore Recordings has announced an extensive and ambitious series of Little Richard reissues, promising to reignite the fervor for one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most iconic and influential pioneers. This comprehensive campaign, spanning from late 2024 to early 2025, is poised to not only satiate longtime fans but also introduce a new generation to the enduring genius of the man born Richard Wayne Penniman.
The reissue series kicks off on November 22, 2024, with the release of “Settin’ The Woods On Fire: The Reprise Rarities,” a treasure trove of 13 tracks that showcases Little Richard’s often overlooked but creatively fertile period with Reprise Records in the 1970s. This collection is more than just a compilation; it’s a musical time capsule that captures the evolution of a legend, demonstrating how Little Richard adapted his incendiary style to the changing musical landscape of a new decade.
Many of the tracks on “Settin’ The Woods On Fire” will be making their vinyl debut, offering fans a chance to experience these rarities in the warm, rich analog format that many argue best captures the essence of rock ‘n’ roll. For other tracks, this release marks their first appearance on vinyl since their original issue decades ago, making this compilation a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The creation of this album has been a labor of love, with attention paid to every detail to ensure the highest quality listening experience. Grammywinning engineer Michael Graves has handled the mastering duties, bringing his expertise to bear in presenting these tracks in their best possible light. The vinyl itself was cut by Jeff Powell at the historic Take Out Vinyl/Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis, a location steeped in rock ‘n’ roll history. This choice of studio adds an extra layer of authenticity to the project, connecting Little Richard’s later work to the very birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll.
But “Settin’ The Woods On Fire” is just the beginning of this exciting series. Omnivore Recordings has laid out a roadmap of releases that will take fans
Little Richard
(continued from previous page) on a journey through Little Richard’s creative resurgence in the 1970s and beyond.
On December 13, 2024, two pivotal albums in Little Richard’s discography will see new life on vinyl. First up is “The Rill Thing,” originally released in 1970 and widely regarded as Little Richard’s comeback album. This record saw the Architect of Rock ‘n’ Roll eschewing the glitz of Los Angeles for the gritty soul of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Recorded at the legendary FAME Recording Studios, “The Rill Thing” captured Little Richard reconnecting with his Southern roots and infusing his sound with the funk and soul that was dominating the airwaves at the time.
The album’s lead single, “Freedom Blues,” became a modest hit, reaching #28 on the charts and proving that Little Richard could still captivate audiences. The title track, a marathon 10-minute funk jam recorded in a single take, showcases the raw energy and improvisational skills of Little Richard and his backing band. This reissue of “The Rill Thing” will be pressed on opaque pink vinyl, a visual nod to the flamboyant style of its creator.
Releasing alongside “The Rill Thing” is “Lifetime Friend,” an album that represents yet another comeback for Little Richard. Released in 1986 after a seven-year recording hiatus, “Lifetime Friend” saw the rock ‘n’ roll pioneer blending his signature sound with spiritual themes, creating a unique fusion
of sacred and secular music. Recorded in London with a star-studded band including Billy Preston and Muscle Shoals guitarist Travis Wammack, the album features the high-energy track “Great Gosh A’Mighty,” which nearly cracked the Top 40 after being rerecorded for the film “Down and Out in Beverly Hills.” This reissue will be pressed on striking turquoise vinyl, offering a visual representation of the album’s blend of earthly rock and heavenly themes.
The reissue campaign continues into the new year, with two more classic albums slated for release on January 10, 2025. “King of Rock and Roll,” originally released in 1971, sees Little Richard living up to the album’s audacious title. Produced by H.B. Barnum, known for his work with the likes of Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra, the album features Little Richard putting his unmistakable stamp on contemporary hits by artists like The Rolling Stones and Creedence Clearwater Revival, alongside his own original compositions. This reissue will be pressed on regal white vinyl, befitting an album from the self-proclaimed King of Rock and Roll.
Rounding out the series is “The Second Coming,” Little Richard’s 1972 album that saw him reuniting with Robert “Bumps” Blackwell, the producer who helped shape his revolutionary sound in the 1950s. Recorded at The Record Plant in Los Angeles, the album brought together musicians from Little Richard’s ’50s heyday with top session players of the early ’70s, creating a sound that bridged the gap between rock ‘n’ roll’s origins and its then-current state. This final reissue in the series will be available on opaque red vinyl, a color that captures the fiery spirit of Little Richard’s performances.
Each of these reissues comes with a printed inner sleeve featuring new liner notes penned by respected music journalist Bill Dahl. These notes provide valuable context for each album, offering insights into Little Richard’s career at the time of recording, the musical climate of the era, and the enduring impact of these often-overlooked works.
The significance of these reissues extends far beyond mere nostalgia. In an era where streaming dominates music consumption, vinyl reissues play a

crucial role in preserving the album as an art form. They offer a tangible connection to music history, allowing listeners to engage with these works as they were originally intended to be experienced. The choice of colored vinyl for each release adds a collectible aspect, making these reissues attractive not just for their musical content but as physical artifacts of rock history.
For longtime fans of Little Richard, these reissues provide an opportunity to rediscover and reevaluate a period of his career that has often been overshadowed by his 1950s hits. They showcase an artist who, far from resting on his laurels, continued to evolve and experiment with his sound well into the 1970s and beyond. The inclusion of rare tracks and alternate takes on “Settin’ The Woods On Fire” offers even the most dedicated Little Richard aficionados something new to discover.
For younger listeners or those less familiar with Little Richard’s later work, these reissues serve as a gateway to exploring the full breadth of his artistry. They demonstrate that there was much more to Little Richard than “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally,” as incredible as those early hits were. These albums reveal an artist grappling with changing musical trends, incorporating elements of funk, soul, and even early rap into his rock ‘n’ roll foundation.
The timing of these reissues is particularly poignant, coming in the wake of Little Richard’s passing in 2020. They serve as a celebration of his enduring legacy and a reminder of his continued relevance in the pantheon of popular music. By bringing these albums back into print on vinyl, Omnivore Recordings is ensuring that Little Richard’s later works remain accessible to music lovers for years to come.
Moreover, these reissues contribute to an ongoing reassessment of Little Richard’s place in music history. While his role as a pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll has never been in dispute, his later career has often been overlooked in discussions of his legacy. These albums demonstrate
that Little Richard remained a vital, creative force long after his initial burst of fame in the 1950s. They show an artist who continued to push boundaries and challenge expectations, even as the music industry and popular tastes evolved around him.
The influence of Little Richard extends far beyond his own recordings. His flamboyant style, explosive stage presence, and distinctive vocal technique inspired countless artists across multiple generations. From The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to Prince and Bruno Mars, the impact of Little Richard can be heard in a vast swath of popular music. These reissues offer an opportunity to trace that influence through the decades, connecting the dots between Little Richard’s foundational work and the music of today.
As vinyl continues its remarkable resurgence, with sales reaching levels not seen since the 1980s, reissues like these play a vital role in the ecosystem of music consumption. They bridge the gap between the analog past and the digital present, offering an alternative to the ephemeral nature of streaming. The act of placing a record on a turntable, dropping the needle, and immersing oneself in an album from start to finish is an experience that can’t be replicated by digital means. It’s an invitation to engage with the music on a deeper level, to appreciate the artistry not just of the performances, but of the song sequencing, the production, and even the album artwork.

The Biker, The Blues & New York City
Famous for its notable blues and jazz clubs the big apple has a number of things going for it, among them of course Broadway, national historical attractions, blues radio and most of all their blues artists. It’s a vibrant setting for blues entertainment. One that as Sinatra sang about “a city that never sleeps”. Even when it comes to dining choices it’s almost beyond imagination. The perfect setting for shall we say one stop shopping. If you travel the highways by motorcycle the fall season throughout all of the state of New York generates a colorful display of leaves that are turning. The photo on the left shares a view of the highway leading up to Emerson Resort & Spa in Mount Tremper New York. The weather can be brisk at sixty miles an hour and of course if it sleets the roads do get slick but then again that is what makes a place like Emerson a nice place to hang your hat. Getting back to New York City if you haven’t experienced the Iridium Club trust me this is one cool place as the entertainment is always and I do mean always over the top. I would highly recommend making reservations because this famous blues and jazz establishment fills up fast every night. Now over in Greenwich Village there is a place well known for its historical residency in the greater New York City area and that’s Terra Blues. The likes of Hubert Sumlin and Johnny Clyde Copeland and many other historical giants as well have laid it down at Terra Blues. Terra Blues has its own effect working, an arched ceiling and the walls are decorated with framed photos of those that have graced their stage. Nationally, blues clubs come in all sizes and are located in all kinds of climates. Just by accessing the Blues Foundation website you can learn about clubs from coast to coast and even some off shore. From the rugged sweltering areas in the state of Arizona to the keys of Florida there is a ride with your name all over it. It’s all about being up on two wheels and being free. When autumn rolls around and you want to hit the road for a tremendous fall journey. You want to get your backside on the highways of New York. When you want to get into some blues

The Biker, The Blues & New York City
that hits your soul like a ton of bricks New York City is hard to beat. NYC presented top shelf blues talent even back when the blues was just alive in the south and slowly making its way up to New York City. This southern blues sound and lyrics deeply influenced the younger northern men and women of that era. By the way it was the women of the blues that filled the speakeasys back in their day. Imagine that scene - being a woman, a black woman back then and having the blues so deep within you that you couldn’t hold it in. You were busting to let it flow. White men were pouring into these speaks for their bath tub gin, warm beer, a look or two at some scantily clad garter wearing ladies and that is when they really got introduced to the blues. But get this, those men could not find the music they were hearing and that’s when the famous music publisher’s row came onto the scene in regard to blues. The area was known as Tin Pan Alley. The word got out that they would record blues and so this became the place to go and get it done. If you read about Tin Pan Alley and there are plenty of books to read about the names and their stories it will fill you with both understanding and sadness. Not the music being sad but the situation itself being dire. Yet driven like a moth to a flame these early New York City blues pioneers were not deterred, they kept recording their songs. The flame had been lit back then and now today’s NYC’s blues clubs are keeping the scene alive and well. Up until 2018 B.B. King’s was the place where you could anticipate top shelf blues. The late, great Milton Hopkins who had eight years on the bus with B.B. said that if you were a blues musician and you worked with the man you would jump at the opportunity to work with him again. Then when B.B. opened his first club there was a steady line of blues artists that the man knew that were knocking on his door week in and week out. Sadly B.B. is gone an so is his famous New York night club. However the blues lives on and remains vibrant in the big apple because of the real deal blues clubs and the folks that own them. Additionally, wrapped around that scene and enshrining blues artists across the region is the New York Blues Hall of Fame Awards plus more than one Blues Society is resident in across greater New York. These are just two resources that people can gain education and learn of current night club locations. Overall the blues is not some kind of what is known as bubble gum manufactured music for pre-teens and early teens. No, the blues isn’t contrived, it’s real, it originates from a person’s soul. It communicates through both rhythms and lyrics. How could a person listen to Willie Dixon’s “Spoonful” and not get into that vibe? How could you listen to Lydia Pense’s deliver of “Feel So Bad” and not be mesmerized by the woman’s performance but also by the arrangement as well? These two folks are from Chicago and the Bay Area respectively and not New York City but they help make the point. The point being that no matter where you come from nor where you are traveling to there is good blues music and good people around you. New York City has a lot going for it and I have only touched on its resources but I am sharing that if you are a midnight rambler brothers and sisters New York City has got it working big time.
