Shemekia Copeland

When it comes to the world of contemporary blues and roots music, few voices resonate with the raw power and captivating emotional depth of Shemekia Copeland. The multi-GRAMMY nominee is a true force of nature, a generational talent whose music seamlessly blends jaw-dropping vocal virtuosity, unflinching social commentary, and an irrepressible spirit of joy and resilience.

Born and raised in the musical hotbed of Harlem, Copeland was practically destined for greatness. She first graced the stage at the tender age of 8, joining her legendary father, the late great bluesman Johnny Copeland, at the iconic Cotton Club. That formative experience instilled in her a lifelong passion for the blues, as well as an unwavering commitment to using her platform to uplift marginalized voices and tackle the most pressing issues of our time.

In the decades since her breakout 1998 debut “Turn the Heat Up,” Copeland has continued to push the boundaries of the genre, blending the timeless sounds of classic blues with more contemporary Americana, rock, and socially conscious sensibilities. Each successive release has found her grappling with the complexities of the modern world, wielding her powerhouse vocals and fearless lyrical sensibility as tools of education, empowerment, and truth-telling.

Her latest offering, the incendiary “Blame It On Eve,” solidifies Copeland’s status as one of the preeminent voices in contemporary blues. Recorded in Nashville and produced by her frequent collaborator Will Kimbrough, the 12track collection finds the artist diving headfirst into a host of hot-button topics, from the erosion of women’s rights to the looming climate crisis. And yet, even as she confronts these weighty issues headon, Copeland maintains a delicate balance, leaving ample space for moments of pure, unadulterated joy and musical catharsis.

In this illuminating conversation, Copeland unpacks the inspiration behind

the album’s provocative title track, her dedication to spotlighting unsung heroes of American music history, and her process for channeling her righteous fury into songs that resonate on both a visceral and intellectual level. As a mother, activist, and sought-after collaborator, she continues to cement her status as a singular artistic voice, using her platform to educate, empower, and entertain in equal measure.

Rock And Blues International: Hello, Shemekia.

Shemekia Copeland: Hi. What’s happening?

Rock And Blues International: How you doing today?

Shemekia Copeland: I’m doing all right. How are you?

Rock And Blues International: Oh, I’m doing great. This is Kevin with Rock And Blues International.

Shemekia Copeland: Great to talk with you.

Rock And Blues International: Nice to talk to you again, too. So you got

a great new album out here.

Shemekia Copeland: I’m very excited about it.

Rock And Blues International: I can imagine, there’s a lot of good tunes on here, John and Will have really done a really great job crafting some of these songs.

Shemekia Copeland: Thank you.

Rock And Blues International: So tell me a little bit about the recording on this. You did it in Nashville.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah, we recorded in Nashville. And, you know, I just really wanted to make a different kind of record than what we had been making. Because to me, I had finished my trilogy, so I was working on wanting to make a different kind of record, and we accomplished that with this. I’m

really excited. I’m really excited.

Rock And Blues International: It’s a rocker. There’s a lot of rockin’ tunes on this thing.

Shemekia Copeland: Yes.

Rock And Blues International: Well, let’s start off. You know, “Blame It On Eve” is the title of the album and it’s the first song on here. So was Eve the one to blame?

Shemekia Copeland: No, it’s actually the opposite. You know, really she wasn’t. For me, I’m basically saying that they blame women for everything and we get a bad rap, but it’s really not us. You know what I’m saying? That’s the opposite, opposite of that.

Rock And Blues International: Exactly, exactly. So what did this song mean to you when you first heard it? I know you’ve got input into the writing of

the songs, but John and Will pretty much wrote almost everything on here, but with your input.

Shemekia Copeland: Well, these songs are tailor made to me, so I’m usually there in their infancy, right from the very beginning. And the nice thing about myself and John, I’ve known him since I was eight years old. We talk every day and one of the things that was bothering me more than anything was what was happening with women’s rights in this country and so I really wanted to to talk about in a way. And this is how I do pretty much everything, talk about it in a way that people could understand and accept. And that’s what we did with that song.

Rock And Blues International:

Well, tell me how that that song appeals... well, how it appeals to that situation.

Shemekia Copeland: Well, I mean, it talks about how everything is named. You know, whatever happens in that there’s a disaster is sort of our fault. It doesn’t matter what it is. You know, a hurricane, a tropical Twister. And you know, since the beginning of time they blamed Eve, not Adam, for what happened in the Garden of Eden. And also just, I wanted to kind of dive into what’s happening with this country right now and women’s rights being taken away. So we kind of talk about that in the song as well.

Rock And Blues International: What do you think the biggest problem is now, as far as women’s rights being taken away? At the moment, there’s a couple of different controversies out there. What would you say the the main one or two would be.

Shemekia Copeland: The main one is, is we need to be able to have rights on what happens to our bodies. Nobody should be able to control that, we should. You know, a group of men in a room shouldn’t get to decide what happens with our bodies.

Rock And Blues International: Exactly, exactly.

continued on next page

Shemekia Copeland

(continued from previous page)

Shemekia Copeland: And that is, that’s a real problem. And don’t let me get into all the other problems, we don’t have time for that.

Rock And Blues International: Okay.

Shemekia Copeland: My favorite line in the song is, “if you want to know how it feels to have the blues, try losing your right to choose”.

Rock And Blues International: Right.

Shemekia Copeland: And that says it all right there.

Rock And Blues International: Yes, the whole situation with that has just gotten out of hand right now.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah, it’s absolutely out of hand.

Rock And Blues International: Well, let’s move on to “Tough Mother”. That sounds a bit autobiographical there.

Shemekia Copeland: It is. It is about my life.

Rock And Blues International: Stepped into his shoes. Lost your mother, but she lives in every song that you’ve sung, and you have a son, and you’ve raised him right, and now he’s going to be a Rolling Stone.

Shemekia Copeland: Exactly. Well, he’s still being raised because he’s only, he’s only seven. Yeah. I mean, it talks about my life growing up in New York. Talked about my father, my mom, my battle with cancer, and, yeah, being a mom, so it’s kind of all in there.

Rock And Blues International: It’s a tough job being a mother.

Shemekia Copeland: The responsibility is unbelievable.

Rock And Blues International: It is. It’s a huge responsibility.

Shemekia Copeland: But that’s my favorite part.

Rock And Blues International: The responsibility?

Shemekia Copeland: No being a mother.

Rock And Blues International: Oh, okay, Well, yeah, your son’s pretty young there. I think when I talked to you last time he was like five or something, and I forget what the song was we talked about then that somewhat pertained to him. You were teaching him something.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah, we ain’t got time. “Ain’t Got Time For Hate”. That was about him.

Rock And Blues International: “Only Miss You All The Time”. You miss your significant other all the time, and it sounds like the woman is drowning herself in wine. The only way she can get by, she drowns herself in wine.

continued on next page

Shemekia Copeland

(continued from previous page)

She misses her fella 24 hours a day.

Shemekia Copeland: It’s a love song. You know what I mean, blues ain’t nothing, blues ain’t nothing but a woman without a man and a man without a woman, right! So it’s just your typical... It’s just a blues song kind of done in a different way, though. You know, not how a typical blues song would be done. We wanted to do it different, and I think we did with the instrumentation and things.

Rock And Blues International: Right. But it’s a good thing god created wine in there. So is she drowning her sorrows in wine?

Shemekia Copeland: No, no, I wouldn’t say she’s drowning herself in wine. I would say that wine helps her get through it. There’s a difference.

Rock And Blues International: Well, this doesn’t seem autobiographical to you. The last time I talked to you, I got the impression you had a very happy life and a happy marriage.

Shemekia Copeland: Exactly, I do. I do very, very much. So I think, no, it’s a lot. It’s a love song. Not every single song on the album is exactly me. You know what I mean? I did a song about domestic abuse, and I’ve never been abused. I’ve done a song about date rape. I’ve never had to go through that, but I do like to put things out there, because other people are going through things. You know what I mean, right? And everything is not just about me. Other people are going through things too. Well part of what a good songwriter and singer does. They help other people, even if it hasn’t happened to them. They know the situations out there, and they help other people through those situations.

Rock And Blues International: Exactly.

Shemekia Copeland: And for me, that’s what I try to do. Some songs directly pertain to me, and others, you know, are just there to be help for someone else.

Rock And Blues International: Right. Well, “Broken High Heels”. That doesn’t sound like you. Well, I mean, something on TV that’s not really there, hurricane, viruses, boozing politicians, church pews are empty and bar stools are filled.

Shemekia Copeland: Well, that’s about climate change and how we’re killing the Earth.

Rock And Blues International: Okay, tell me a little more about that then.

Shemekia Copeland: No, that’s what it’s about. You know what I mean? We’re dancing in the graveyard in broken high heels, spinning around the circles like a Ferris Wheel. Fools and politicians don’t believe it’s real. We’re dancing in the graveyard in broken high heels. It’s about what’s happening in... It’s about what’s happening on earth. This is my second song that I’ve done about climate change because it’s important.

Rock And Blues International: Are you a big climate change advocate?

Shemekia Copeland: Well, I don’t

know what that would mean. I do try to do what I can to to help, but I wouldn’t say I’m like a huge advocate. I’m not out protesting or anything, right. This is how I advocate making music.

Rock And Blues International: All right, “Wine O’Clock”. Here, husband’s snoring, kids and nagging mother needs help, and it’s time for wine o’clock. Things just look much more clearer through wine goggles. I thought that was an interesting song here.

Shemekia Copeland: Oh yeah, well, it’s a funny song. You know, a lot of people, at the end of the day, just need to relax and get away from their life, and they have a glass of wine to chill, whatever you choose to have. You know what I mean? Some people smoke a joint. Some people have some wine. Some people go for a swim. It doesn’t matter, but it’s about having your time to wind down, that time of day that you need.

Rock And Blues International: How do you wind down?

Shemekia Copeland: I don’t know, I have several things that I do. We’re mostly just being at home, hanging out with my family. That’s wind down time for me, family time.

Shemekia Copeland

(continued from previous page)

Rock And Blues International: Well, you probably spend a lot of time on the road.

Shemekia Copeland: Not a lot, but I spend enough time away that I really love family time, that’s for sure.

Rock And Blues International:

Okay, “Is There Anybody Up There?” You’ve got Alejandro Escovido on there joining in with you. His vocals sound fantastic on there. It sounds a little bit like it’s talking about the world going crazy. Juanita is going back to Juarez. There’s something about immigration. Everybody’s acting crazy, and it’s time for a miracle.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah, it’s a call for prayer. The world is going crazy, so it’s just a call. You know, is there anybody else there? Because if you are, we need your help, and Heaven help us all because we need it.

Rock And Blues International: Uh huh, tell me about Juanita going back to Juarez. How did that get involved in there?

Shemekia Copeland: Well, that’s just a situation that we have with immigration. I mean, that’s just a what is going on, people going to prison. Just a situational thing. It’s like telling a story.

Rock And Blues International: Okay. “Cadillac Blue”, another love song.

Shemekia Copeland: Actually, it’s a song about interracial relationship.

Rock And Blues International: Right, they told you stick to your kind, but you fell in love with the guy with the blue eyes. Tell me a little bit more about that.

Shemekia Copeland: It’s my second song that I did like that. On the last album I did a song called “I Fell In Love With A Honky”, which is a very funny song about an interracial relationship.

Rock And Blues International: I remember that one.

Shemekia Copeland: And so I am in one and you know, 35% of this country at this point is mixed race. And so I just like putting things, putting songs like that on my record because there’s a lot of us in these types of relationships. So it’s a love song about being in an interracial relationship and all about love.

Rock And Blues International: And you’ve got Jerry Douglas guesting on there on steel guitar.

Shemekia Copeland: Absolutely, I love working with him. He’s super

continued on next page

Shemekia Copeland

(continued from previous page)

talented.

Rock And Blues International: Well, let’s see, you told me your husband was a real rocker. How’d he feel about this song?

Shemekia Copeland: Oh, he loves the song, except he says his eyes aren’t blue.

Rock And Blues International: Okay. The next one, Belle... I’m going to say this word wrong.

Shemekia Copeland: “Belle Sorciere”.

Rock And Blues International: Yeah, that’s it. Very sad song.

Shemekia Copeland: It is a sad song. It’s about a woman who sang every day until her husband passed away, and then she couldn’t sing anymore.

Rock And Blues International: A Creole woman and a Cajun man. And he takes sick. She stays by his side and he passes on, and she just hopes that he winds up in a better place, but she never sings again.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah, it’s so sad. Somehow it seems a little bit less sad in French, but it’s a very sad song.

Rock And Blues International: And you sing the chorus in French. Well, I don’t speak French, so can you tell me about the chorus?

Shemekia Copeland: Well, beautiful store sorcerer. You know sing for me, yeah, that’s what it is, Belle Sorciere. Belle Sociere, sing a song for me. That’s basically what I’m singing, yeah.

Rock And Blues International: And Pascal Danae from Delgres was one of the writers and one of the vocal guests on here. How did that come about?

Shemekia Copeland: Gosh, I saw Delgres perform in Portland, Oregon at the waterfront Festival, and they’re just amazing. And then Pascal was just, Oh, my God, so talented. And we always have these ideas about doing things that I’ve always wanted to sing in a different language. French is very singable. And we just thought doing it with Pascal would be, would be wonderful, and it was.

Rock And Blues International: How hard was it to talk him into it?

Shemekia Copeland: Not very hard at all. Really, really great guy.

Rock And Blues International: Okay, “Tell The Devil”. That sounds like it’s a spiritual song, but it sounds like the opposite of “Crossroad Blues”.

Shemekia Copeland: Oh. No, I mean, that song. I love it. This song, it’s an upbeat song, and it’s basically another song about what’s happening right now, and being able to overcome it and get through it. You know, tell that devil to go right straight to hell. That’s what we need to do.

Rock And Blues International: Okay. Well, to me, it just sounded like just the opposite of “Crossroads”, where Robert Johnson sold his soul for to learn to play the blues, but this person has

made her her deal with Jesus, and there’s nothing she’s going to do to get involved in that situation.

Shemekia Copeland: Well, that’s true too. That can be true too.

Rock And Blues International: All right. And then we’ve got a history lesson on here with the next song “Tee Tot Payne”. You’re paying tribute to Rufus Payne, which is a story that probably 99.9% of the Country music people do not know.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah, which was very important. I mean, we’ve done an educational song on every record in the recent records. So I did one, I did on “Uncivil War”. I did “Clotildas On Fire. And that was about the slave ship that they found off the coast of Alabama. And on the last record “Done Come Too Far”, I did a song about the Gullah people in South Carolina. And on this record, we’re talking about Tee Tot Payne and if it wasn’t for Rufus Payne, nobody would know, you know, country music would definitely gone in a different direction if it wasn’t for him, I’m sure.

Rock And Blues International: Well, it’s great that you included this in there. It’s wonderful to have a little musical history lesson from time to time.

continued on next page

Shemekia Copeland

(continued from previous page)

And hopefully it makes an impression on a lot of people too.

Shemekia Copeland: I hope so. And it just lets people know about another person that they don’t know about, and all these people that enjoy country music knowing that the reason that they enjoy it so much is because of this person and I love that.

Rock And Blues International: Oh, yeah, well know, it’s a very, very good lesson there to learn. “Down On Bended Knee”. Every album that you do, you include a song by your father. So on this one you picked “Down On Bended Knee. Why was this one selected?

Shemekia Copeland: You know, I just love that song. No particular reason. I just love that song. I’ve got a whole lot of Johnny Copeland songs to choose from. So it’s, it just, it was just one of my favorites so I did it on this record.

Rock And Blues International: Okay? And then the other cover on here is “Heaven Help Us All” by Ronald Miller that Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles both covered. Why was that selected?

Shemekia Copeland: Well, I heard the Ray Charles version that he did with

Gladys Knight, and I just really love the song. But when they recorded, it was, you know, huge. There was, like, a lot of choir, and very big sounding, with all the all the trimmings. And when I heard it, I thought, man, I would really like to do this song just kind of broken down without all that stuff. And that’s what I did with this one.

Rock And Blue s International: The stripped down version.

Shemekia Copeland: The stripped down version because I just love the lyrics, you know, another call for help.

Rock And Blues International: Another call for help.

Shemekia Copeland: Another call for help.

Rock And Blues International: Oh, my goodness. Well, we’ve talked about all the songs on here. Do you want to comment on Will, working with Will again. Is this the third or the fourth album he’s done with you?

Shemekia Copeland: This is number four. We just work so well together. I mean, there’s absolutely nothing that I throw at him that he can’t handle, because he is so extremely

talented. So it’s just, it’s a joy and a pleasure to work with him. It really is, and then just me, him and John, we work so well together. It’s very organic, you know, we work well together.

Rock And Blues International: Well, it was pretty much the same group of people on every song here, Lex Price on bass, Pete Abbott on drums, and you had a couple of guest vocalists here and there. But other than that, you had the same band throughout the whole album.

Shemekia Copeland: Yep, core group.

Rock And Blues International: Do you find that a lot easier to deal with than dealing than working with a lot of different musicians at the same time.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah, I mean for me, it’s consistency, right. You know, you’re consistent through the whole record, working with the guys that know you well, and that’s why I enjoy working with this crew.

Rock And Blues International: Okay, well, What haven’t we discussed on here that we should have?

Shemekia Copeland: I think we discussed the record.

Rock And Blues International: What did Bruce (Iglauer) say about the album when he heard it? He usually always has a comment.

Shemekia Copeland: Well, I assume he likes the record. He’s putting it out, so I don’t remember an exact comment about it.

Rock And Blues International: But he liked it.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah.

Rock And Blues International: Well, really, what have I missed here that I should have asked you about?

Shemekia Copeland: I don’t know. I love Luther Dickinson on “Tough Mother”, which I’m really, really happy

continued on page 16

Shemekia Copeland

about. Great player, I mean, I love the North Mississippi Allstars, so I was glad that I got a chance to work with them. And at some point I’m going to have to get Cody on something too. And then we talked about Jerry Douglas being on the record.

Rock And Blues International: Yeah, he’s on a couple of songs on here.

Shemekia Copeland: Yep. Well, he wrote “Cadillac Blue”. But I just love, I just love his playing so much. The nice thing about being in Nashville is being able to pull from all American roots music. You know, there’s bluegrass and country and banjo and African banjo. We’ve got cello on this record. I mean, I love that. I mean, I love that you can make a blues record and have all of this instrumentation that you wouldn’t find on a regular blues album.

Rock And Blues International: Well, you’re based in Chicago, right?

Shemekia Copeland: Nope, no, I live in California.

Rock And Blues International: In California, okay. Well, that’s quite a trek out there, to go to Nashville, to record. It gives you a little bit more inspiration by heading out there.

Shemekia Copeland: Well, I’m used to traveling. I mean, that’s what I do. So I’m used to traveling.

Rock And Blues International: All right. Well, anything else we need to talk about on this, there’s bound to be something I’ve missed.

Shemekia Copeland: Well, that’s okay. If there’s something that you missed, you can always reach out again. I’m not going anywhere, at least, I hope.

Rock And Blues International: Well, I hope not either, unless it’s someplace fun.

Shemekia Copeland: Yeah.

(continued from previous page)

Rock And Blues International: What do you do for fun nowadays?

Shemekia Copeland: Mostly for me, it’s family time. You know, I got a seven year old, so I do what a seven year old wants to do.

Rock And Blues International: Do you take family vacations? Do you wind up at Disneyland a lot?

Shemekia Copeland: Never, never, no, we’ve not been there yet.

Rock And Blues International: But you’re in California. How can you miss Disneyland? Okay, well, I guess if there’s nothing else for us to talk about, then I better let you go.

Shemekia Copeland: Okay, like I said, I’m just a phone call away. If you need anything else, I’m a phone call away, all right.

Rock And Blues International: Well, if I think of something, then I’ll call you. Otherwise, it’s been wonderful talking to you again, and I hope you have a wonderful afternoon.

Shemekia Copeland: All right. You too. Thanks so much.

Rock And Blues International: Okay, bye, bye.

Shemekia Copeland: Bye.

As our engrossing discussion with Shemekia Copeland draws to a close, it’s abundantly clear that the artist is operating at the peak of her creative powers. With “Blame It On Eve,” she has delivered a bold, multi-faceted

collection that seamlessly fuses her signature blues sensibilities with a keen social consciousness and a joyful, lifeaffirming spirit.

Whether she’s chronicling the challenges of single motherhood on the autobiographical “Tough Mother,” paying homage to the unsung musical pioneer Tee Tot Payne, or confronting the erosion of women’s rights with the album’s fiery title track, Copeland approaches each subject with a level of passion, vulnerability, and musical virtuosity that is nothing short of spellbinding. Her vocals, alternately gritty and soulful, serve as the perfect vehicle for her truth-telling lyrics, cutting through the noise with a clarity and conviction that is impossible to ignore.

Throughout our conversation, Copeland has emphasized the importance of finding moments of levity and release amidst the chaos - a sentiment that is woven seamlessly throughout the fabric of “Blame It On Eve.” Ultimately, this album solidifies her status as one of the most compelling, socially conscious, and musically dynamic artists working today, a true force of nature whose irrepressible spirit continues to captivate and inspire listeners around the world.

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our insightful and wide-ranging discussion with Shemekia Copeland, and it’s been a privilege to gain such a nuanced understanding of the inspirations and ethos behind her vital new body of work. As she continues to push the boundaries of the blues genre, we eagerly await the next chapter in this singular artist’s already storied career.

Seether

South African rock powerhouse Seether is poised to dominate stages across the United States this fall, launching an ambitious co-headlining tour with Skillet. This 18-date expedition, commencing in early October, is set to be a monumental celebration of the band’s enduring legacy and a platform for their highly anticipated ninth studio album, “The Surface Seems So Far.”

Slated for release on September 20th via Fantasy Records, “The Surface Seems So Far” represents a significant milestone in Seether’s illustrious twodecade journey at the forefront of hard rock. The album’s lead single, “Judas Mind,” has already made substantial waves in the rock community, rapidly ascending both the Mediabase Active Rock chart and Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Currently sitting at an impressive #7 on both charts, the single’s swift climb is a testament to Seether’s unwavering relevance and their ability to consistently produce compelling, radio-friendly rock tracks.

Seether’s impressive discography boasts five gold and platinum albums, a feat that underscores their consistent ability to connect with listeners on a massive scale. Their catalog includes an astounding 24 Billboard Rock Airplay Top 10 hits, with 20 of these reaching the coveted #1 spot on U.S. radio. This remarkable track record places Seether among the most successful rock bands of the 21st century, a position they’ve maintained through evolving musical landscapes and industry changes.

The band’s journey to rock stardom is a compelling narrative of talent and perseverance. Emerging from South Africa in the early 2000s, Seether quickly distinguished themselves in the post-grunge era with their authentic sound and emotionally charged lyrics. Their 2002 American debut, “Disclaimer,” featuring the hit single “Fine Again,” marked the beginning of their international success. However, it was the 2004 re-release, “Disclaimer II,” that truly catapulted them to stardom, powered by the international hit “Broken,” featuring Amy Lee of Evanescence.

Subsequent albums further cemented Seether’s status as rock titans. “Karma and Effect” (2005) broke into the Top Ten, while “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces” (2007) produced the sardonic hit “Fake It.” As they moved into the 2010s, Seether’s momentum

Seether Embarks on Nationwide Tour: Rock Titans Showcase New Album and Two Decades of Hits

showed no signs of slowing. “Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray” (2011) and “Isolate and Medicate” (2014) both reached the Top Five in the U.S., demonstrating the band’s consistent appeal across more than a decade.

The band’s more recent outputs have continued to push boundaries while maintaining their signature sound. The 2017 release “Poison the Parish” saw frontman Shaun Morgan step into the producer’s role, marking a new era of creative control for the band. Their 2020 album, “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” (Latin for “If you want peace, prepare for war”), spawned the active rock hits “Dangerous” and “Bruised & Bloodied,”

further solidifying their status as one of rock’s most reliable hit-makers.

Now, with “The Surface Seems So Far,” Seether is poised to add another chapter to their storied career. The 11track collection, produced by Morgan in collaboration with veteran producer Matt Hyde (known for his work with Deftones and Slayer), promises to deliver the introspective lyrics and powerful soundscapes that have become Seether’s hallmark. Tracks like “Regret,” “Same Mistakes,” and “Dead on the Vine” hint at an album that will take listeners on an emotional journey, blending the band’s

trademark aggression with moments of vulnerability and introspection.

Beyond their musical achievements, Seether has demonstrated a commitment to using their platform for meaningful causes. For nearly a decade, they founded and ran the annual Rise Above Fest, an event dedicated to raising awareness for suicide prevention and mental illness. This initiative not only showcased the band’s social conscience but also deepened their connection with fans, many of whom have found solace and strength in Seether’s music.

The upcoming tour offers fans across the country a unique opportunity to experience Seether’s evolution firsthand. Attendees can expect a setlist that spans the band’s impressive catalog, from early hits like “Broken” and “Fine Again” to more recent chart-toppers, alongside fresh material from “The Surface Seems So Far.” This comprehensive showcase of their work promises to be a powerful reminder of Seether’s impact on the rock landscape over the past two decades.

Seether’s enduring success in a notoriously fickle industry is a testament to their authenticity and musical integrity. Throughout lineup changes and evolving musical trends, the band has remained true to their core sound while still finding ways to grow and adapt. The current lineup, consisting of Shaun Morgan (vocals, guitar), Dale Stewart (bass), John Humphrey (drums), and Corey Lowery (guitar), represents a perfect balance of long-standing chemistry and fresh energy.

As they prepare to hit the road, anticipation is building among rock fans nationwide. The tour offers not just a series of concerts, but a celebration of Seether’s ongoing story – a narrative of perseverance, evolution, and the unifying power of rock music. For long-time fans, it’s a chance to reconnect with the band that has been a constant in their lives for two decades. For newer listeners, it’s an opportunity to experience firsthand the raw energy and emotional depth that have made Seether a mainstay in rock for over 20 years.

In an era where rock music’s place

in the mainstream is often questioned, Seether’s continued success and creative output serve as a powerful reminder of the genre’s enduring appeal. Their ability to consistently produce chart-topping hits while maintaining artistic integrity is a rare feat in today’s music industry. As they prepare to unleash “The Surface Seems So Far” and embark on this new tour, Seether once again proves that authentic, emotionally charged rock music will always find its audience.

Tickets for the tour are available now through the band’s official website, www.seether.com. Given the buzz surrounding the new album and Seether’s reputation for electrifying live performances, fans are encouraged to secure their spots early. This fall tour promises to be more than just a concert series – it’s a testament to Seether’s enduring legacy, a celebration of their achievements, and a glimpse into the future of one of rock’s most consistent and compelling acts.

As Seether continues to forge ahead in their career, this tour stands as a powerful reminder of their ongoing relevance in the rock world. It’s a chance for fans across the nation to be part of a legacy two decades in the making, and to witness firsthand the electricity of a band that continues to define and redefine the boundaries of modern rock music.

Andrea Aaron, reflections of a Love Guru

Iris, Andrea Aaron’s “almost” absolute recording debut, has blossomed. The French singer-songwriter, who lives on the outskirts of Paris and whose EP, Things I Couldn’t Tell Till Now, had fleetingly appeared six years ago, delivers an elastic and seductive soul singing. While capturing immediate attention, she reveals a classical training and studies at the conservatory, alongside to close attention to the protagonists of several generations of R&B, from Aretha Franklin to Marvin Gaye to Sade up to the British performer Cleo Sol.

The slightly nasal breathing of her voice, obviously aware of the legacy of Amy Winehouse, is projected into a contemporary and cosmopolitan environment, familiar with hip hop and not far from a minimalist, chamber jazz.

The formula synthesizes and enhances Andrea’s previous experience, when she adopted the name Hina Aaron and the band she accompanied, where she met Cosimo Severi, who would become her partner both in art and life, was called Be Hop Experience.

Thanks to a light production touch, by choice rather than necessity, Aaron lays bare her soul by resorting, on the first and last pages, to floral appeals. The opening is for the tender, resolute “Flowers”, an ethereal ballad that infuses a message of hope (“we are flowers, making our way out of dirt”); the hypnotic closing title-track, with the clever dosage of electronics and vocoder, is a multi-layered reflection on her own identity, nominal or not (“You used to call me Hina, now you can call me Andrea”).

The texture, which, in addition to Severi, pianist, co-author and arranger, a few trusted instrumentalists put their hands onAntoine Brunet, double bass and moog; Igor “Bloozi” Cirille, drums; Lenny Baroux, guitar; Jeanne Michard, flute - is congenial to Aaron’s narration of the challenges of modern times, from social justice to mental health, from the loss of a loved one (“Dream of Her”) to gender violence. And to the definitive ability to react in the face of material or spiritual traumas, as in “Uncrushable,” sharing a video with the effective image of the young girl in the boxing ring.

Among the other sparks, the structure of the resolute “I Won’t Argue No More”, punctuated by Roman Didier’s trumpet, the autobiographical “Storm” and, above all, the magnetic, positive and sexy “Love Guru” (“I would like to be a love guru, in the style of Erykah Badu”), which should not be missing from any playlist, be it postmodern or retro.

Rob ZombieAndAlice Cooper EmbarkOnThe “Freaks On Parade Tour” Across North America

Two of hard rock’s most legendary icons, Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, are once again joining forces to bring their unique brands of horror-fueled mayhem to Houston concertgoers, and they’re upping the ante with industrial titans Ministry and heavy-rock stalwarts Filter along for the ride.

After the massive success of the tour’s inaugural run in 2022, Zombie and Cooper are poised to deliver an even bigger and more bombastic spectacle this time around. As two of the most enduring and iconoclastic figures in hard rock history, the two performers have built parallel careers marked by a shared affinity for the macabre and an unwavering commitment to delivering an unforgettable

live experience.

Rob Zombie, the longtime frontman of the influential industrial metal group White Zombie, has spent the past few decades carving out an equally successful career as both a musician and a filmmaker. Drawing from his lifelong love of B-movies, horror, and psychedelic imagery, Zombie has consistently pushed the boundaries of what rock music can be, blending brutal metal riffs with a tongue-in-cheek sense of camp and sexuality that set him apart from his more one-dimensional contemporaries.

His 1998 solo debut, “Hellbilly Deluxe,” established Zombie as a singular force in the hard rock landscape, a record that balanced the punishing intensity of industrial

metal with a darkly humorous sensibility that owed as much to the EC Comics of his youth as it did to the sonic assaults of Ministry and Nine Inch Nails. Over the course of seven solo studio albums, Zombie has demonstrated a remarkable versatility, incorporating elements of groove metal, blues rock, and even electronic music into his everevolving sonic palette.

But Zombie’s creative vision extends far beyond the confines of the recording studio. As a filmmaker, he has proven himself to be just as bold and uncompromising, writing and directing a series of cult horror favorites that have cemented his status as one of the genre’s most distinct and influential voices. From

the gritty, grindhouse-inspired “House of 1,000 Corpses” to the deliriously over-the-top “The Devil’s Rejects” and the recent “3 From Hell,” Zombie’s unique visual style has become as much a part of his

artistic identity as his music, creating a truly immersive and unforgettable experience for his devoted fans.

While Zombie’s career has been marked by a decidedly modern

sensibility, his co-headliner, Alice Cooper, is a true pioneer of shock rock. As the frontman of the band that bears his name, Cooper helped usher in a new era of theatrical hard rock in the 1970s, blending gritty, guitardriven anthems with a grandly macabre stage show that quite literally pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in mainstream rock music.

From electric chairs and guillotines to boa constrictors and copious amounts of fake blood, Cooper’s live performances were designed to shock and horrify, delivering a rock & roll chamber of horrors that cultivated outrage from authority figures even as it endeared him to legions of devoted fans who embraced his gleefully transgressive brand of showmanship.

Tracks like “School’s Out,” “I’m Eighteen,” and “Poison” became hard rock staples, cementing Cooper’s status as one of the most successful and influential acts of the decade. But beyond the shock value, Cooper also proved himself to be a remarkably versatile songwriter, effortlessly blending tough, guitar-driven riffs with lyrics that were by turns relatable and deliciously macabre.

Even after the original Alice Cooper band dissolved in the mid-1970s, Cooper has continued to evolve, maintaining his theatrical live show while exploring new sonic directions. Albums like “Welcome to My Nightmare” and “Trash” have seen him incorporate

(continued from previous page)

elements of pop metal and hair metal, keeping him relevant in the evershifting landscape of rock music.

Now, as these two titans of horror-tinged hard rock join forces once again, Houston concertgoers are in for a true feast for the senses. With the added firepower of industrial veterans Ministry and heavy-rock upstarts Filter, the “Freaks On Parade Tour” promises to be a night of unbridled excess, delivering a twisted carnival of horrors that will leave an indelible mark on all who witness it.

The connection between Zombie and Cooper extends beyond their shared penchant for the macabre. Both artists have weathered the ebbs and flows of the music industry, maintaining relevance and building enduring legacies that transcend the parameters of genre. While their sonic palettes may differ, they are united in their commitment to delivering a one-of-a-kind live experience that is as much a celebration of their own singular visions as it is a tribute to the spirit of rock & roll rebellion.

For Zombie, the “Freaks On Parade Tour” represents the latest chapter in a remarkably multifaceted career that has seen him achieve success in both music and film. With a discography that spans over two decades and a filmography that includes some of the most iconic horror movies of the 21st century, Zombie has cemented his status as a true Renaissance man of the rock world. From his early days fronting the pioneering industrial metal group White Zombie to his continued evolution as a solo artist, he has consistently pushed the boundaries of

what heavy music can be, merging his love of the bizarre and the grotesque with a flair for the theatrical that has captivated audiences around the world.

Meanwhile, the ever-resilient Cooper continues to defy the ravages of time, touring relentlessly and releasing new music that showcases his enduring creative spark. At 75 years old, the shock-rock legend

shows no signs of slowing down, still delivering the same high-energy performances that have captivated audiences for over half a century. While his sound and stage show may have evolved over the decades, Cooper’s commitment to delivering an unforgettable experience for his fans has remained unwavering.

Blues Guitar Virtuoso Walter Trout Announces Ambitious Global Tour, Celebrating New Album ‘Broken’ and Five Decades of Musical Excellence

In a testament to the enduring power of the blues and one man’s indomitable spirit, legendary guitarist Walter Trout has announced an expansive international tour that will take him across the United States and Europe. The tour, in support of his latest album “Broken,” promises to be a celebration of Trout’s illustrious career and a showcase of his continued musical evolution.

Trout’s journey through the world of blues rock is nothing short of extraordinary. Born in New Jersey in 1951, he cut his teeth playing in local bands

before making the bold move to Los Angeles in 1973. Armed with determination and the Fender Stratocaster that would become his signature instrument, Trout quickly made a name for himself in the competitive L.A. music scene. His early career saw him playing alongside blues royalty like Big Mama Thornton, Lowell Fulsom, and John Lee Hooker, experiences that would shape his distinctive style and lay the groundwork for his later success.

The upcoming tour, which kicks off on September 1st at the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA, is a testament to Trout’s enduring appeal and tireless work ethic. The American leg of the tour

will see him crisscrossing the country, with notable stops including two nights at Charlotte’s Neighborhood Theatre on September 8th and 9th, a performance at the historic Broadside in New Orleans on September 10th, and a run through Texas with shows in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas from September 12th to 15th.

Each of these venues holds a special place in the American music landscape. The Sellersville Theater, for instance, is renowned for its intimate setting and superior acoustics, providing an ideal environment for Trout’s nuanced

playing. The Broadside in New Orleans, with its open-air setup, offers a unique backdrop that resonates with the city’s rich musical history. The Texas run, culminating at the storied Kessler Theater in Dallas, will see Trout performing in some of the state’s most respected music venues, each with its own devoted following of blues enthusiasts.

After conquering the American circuit, Trout will take his musical odyssey across the Atlantic, beginning with a performance in Kaiserslautern, Germany on October 11th. This European leg of the tour underscores Trout’s global appeal, with a schedule that includes a prestigious appearance at the Kaunas Blues Festival in Lithuania on October 12th. The festival, known for attracting top-tier blues talent from around the world, provides a fitting stage for Trout’s masterful guitar work and emotive vocals.

The United Kingdom portion of

the tour is particularly notable, featuring 10 dates across England and Scotland. From the ornate Buxton Opera House on October 16th to the grand Birmingham Town Hall on October 24th, Trout will be gracing some of Britain’s most beloved and historic music venues. The UK has long been a stronghold for Trout’s fanbase, dating back to his days with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in the 1980s. The tour’s conclusion at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on October 25th is sure to be a highlight, offering fans in the capital a chance to experience Trout’s electrifying performance in an intimate setting.

November sees Trout return to continental Europe for an extensive run of shows across Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. A special appearance supporting Beth Hart in Köln, Germany on November 18th adds another layer of excitement to the tour, pairing two of blues rock’s most powerful voices on one stage. The European dates continue into early December, wrapping up on

December 6th in Neuruppin, Germany, bringing Trout’s musical journey full circle.

This ambitious tour serves as the perfect vehicle for Trout to showcase material from “Broken,” his 2024 release that has already been hailed as one of his finest works to date. The album, featuring collaborations with Beth Hart and Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider, represents another high point in Trout’s storied career. “Broken” sees Trout pushing his songwriting to new heights, tackling personal themes with the honesty and emotional depth that have become hallmarks of his work.

Trout’s musical journey is intrinsically tied to his personal one. His rise to prominence in the 1980s with Canned Heat and later with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers established him as a force to be reckoned with in the blues world. However, it was his decision to embark on a solo career in 1989 that truly allowed his artistry to flourish. Albums like “Life in the Jungle” (1990), “Transition” (1992), and “Tellin’ Stories” (1994)

showcased his growth as a songwriter and performer, blending scorching guitar work with thoughtful, often introspective lyrics.

The new millennium saw Trout continue to evolve and expand his musical horizons. Albums like “Full Circle” (2006), which featured collaborations with John Mayall and Joe Bonamassa, demonstrated his standing among blues elite. His 2013 release, “Luther’s Blues,” a tribute to the late Luther Allison, highlighted Trout’s deep respect for blues tradition and his peers.

Perhaps the most defining moment of Trout’s career came in 2014 when he faced a life-threatening battle with liver disease, culminating in a successful transplant. This harrowing experience became the subject of his critically acclaimed 2015 album “Battle Scars,” a

raw and honest reflection on his struggle and recovery. Trout’s resilience in the face of adversity has only added to his legend and infused his recent work with even greater emotional resonance.

Since his return to health, Trout has experienced a creative renaissance. Albums like “We’re All in This Together” (2017) and “Survivor Blues” (2019) both reached number one on the Blues Albums chart, affirming his status as a contemporary blues icon. His 2020 release, “Ordinary Madness,” saw Trout expanding his sonic palette, incorporating influences from songwriters like John Lennon and Bob Dylan while maintaining his blues foundations.

Trout’s influence extends far beyond his own recordings. His dedication to keeping the blues alive and relevant has inspired countless musi-

cians, and his live performances are often described as masterclasses in blues guitar. For aspiring guitarists, each stop on this tour represents a unique opportunity to see one of the instrument’s modern masters up close.

Known for his blistering guitar work, powerful vocals, and deeply personal songwriting, Trout’s live performances are renowned for their intensity and ability to connect with audiences on a profound level. Fans attending these shows can expect a mix of new material from “Broken” alongside classics from Trout’s extensive catalog. His ability to channel raw emotion through his instrument, coupled with his honest, often autobiographical songwriting, creates a powerful connection with audiences. Whether he’s tearing through a high-energy blues rocker or delivering a soul-stirring ballad, Trout’s passion for his craft is palpable.

As Walter Trout prepares to

embark on this globe-spanning tour, he brings with him not just decades of experience, but a renewed passion for his craft. His journey from a young, ambitious guitarist to a survivor and elder statesman of the blues is a testament to the enduring power of the genre and the human spirit. For blues fans around the world, this tour offers more than just a night of incredible music – it’s a chance to be part of living blues history.

Tickets for Walter Trout’s 2024 tour are available now, with some venues already reporting high demand. Given the intimate nature of many of the chosen venues and Trout’s devoted following, early ticket purchase is recommended. As the blues community eagerly anticipates this musical pilgrimage, one thing is certain: Walter Trout’s 2024 tour promises to be a triumphant celebration of one of blues rock’s most enduring and talented figures.

Metal Titans U.D.O. Prepare to Dominate North America with Rescheduled Tour

In a move that has set the heavy metal world ablaze with anticipation, German metal legends U.D.O. have announced their rescheduled North American tour for 2024. Fronted by the indomitable Udo Dirkschneider, whose distinctive vocals have been a cornerstone of heavy metal for over four decades, U.D.O. is poised to bring their thunderous sound to eager fans across the continent.

Originally planned for late 2023, the tour faced an unexpected hurdle. “Due to an insurmountable combination

of logistical, cargo, and rental equipment problems,” the band was forced to postpone their North American conquest. However, true to the resilient spirit of heavy metal, U.D.O. has risen above these challenges, emerging with a revamped and electrifying tour schedule for 2024.

The newly announced 22-date trek is set to kick off on September 6, 2024, in Frenchtown, New Jersey. From there, the metal caravan will thunder through major cities including Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Columbus, Montreal, and Toronto. The tour will

reach its crescendo on October 12 in Manchester, New Hampshire, promising nearly five weeks of unadulterated metal mayhem.

U.D.O.’s current tour serves as a showcase for their latest album, “Touchdown,” released in August 2023 through Atomic Fire Records. This 13-track juggernaut stands as a testament to the band’s enduring commitment to hardhitting, no-nonsense heavy metal. Produced by Martin “Mattes” Pfeiffer and mixed at Redhead Studio in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, “Touchdown”

(continued from previous page)

received its final polish from Stefan Kaufmann at ROXX Studio in Solingen, Germany. The album features a guest appearance by violinist Stefan Pintev on the title track, adding an unexpected layer to U.D.O.’s trademark sound. Perhaps most intriguingly, the bass tracks were laid down by none other than former ACCEPT bassist Peter Baltes, foreshadowing his eventual full-time return to the fold.

The album’s artwork, created by Martin Häusler, serves as a visual representation of U.D.O.’s powerful sonic assault. Häusler was also responsible for the band’s latest photo shoot, creating a cohesive visual identity for the “Touchdown” era.

In a recent interview with George Dionne of KNAC.COM, the 71-year-old Dirkschneider shed light on what fans can expect from the upcoming tour’s setlist. While U.D.O. has primarily focused on their own extensive catalog in recent years, Dirkschneider revealed that the band might include a couple of ACCEPT classics in their set, particularly the iconic “Balls To The Wall.” This decision comes as a treat for longtime fans who have followed

Dirkschneider’s career from his ACCEPT days through his successful journey with U.D.O.

“The promoter in America, he said, ‘Yeah, but when you come on tour, you have to play ‘Balls To The Wall’. You cannot be in America without ‘Balls To The Wall’,’” Dirkschneider explained. “And then he said, ‘Can we put this in the contract?’ And I said, ‘Don’t worry. We don’t have to put this in the contract. I know that we have to play ‘Balls To The Wall’ in America. Of course.’”

Adding to the excitement surrounding the tour is the recent addition of Peter Baltes to U.D.O.’s lineup. Baltes, the former bassist of ACCEPT, officially joined U.D.O. and DIRKSCHNEIDER (Udo’s project focusing exclusively on ACCEPT material) in April 2024. His presence adds another layer of authenticity to the group’s sound, especially when revisiting ACCEPT classics. Baltes had been playing bass for U.D.O. since September 2023, initially as a temporary replacement for U.D.O.’s then-bassist Tilen Hudrap who was hospitalized after the band’s show in Munich, Germany.

The current U.D.O. lineup, featuring Udo Dirkschneider on vocals, Andrey Smirnov and Fabian Dee Dammers on guitars, Peter Baltes on

bass, and Sven Dirkschneider on drums, promises to deliver a high-octane performance that spans the band’s impressive 18-album discography.

U.D.O.’s journey began in 1987 following Udo Dirkschneider’s departure from ACCEPT. Over the years, the band has carved out a significant place in the heavy metal landscape, consistently delivering albums that stay true to the classic metal sound while pushing the boundaries of the genre. From their debut “Animal House” to the recent “Touchdown,” U.D.O. has maintained a prolific output, averaging nearly an album per year.

The band’s longevity and consistency are a testament to Dirkschneider’s unwavering dedication to heavy metal. Despite brief reunions with ACCEPT and various lineup changes over the years, U.D.O. has remained a constant force in the metal world, continuing to tour and release new material that resonates with fans old and new.

For die-hard fans looking to make the most of this rare opportunity, VIP packages are available. These exclusive packages include a meet-and-greet with the band, photo opportunities, autographs, and more, offering an unforget-

table experience for true metal aficionados. Tickets and VIP upgrades are available through national-acts.com/UDO.

As U.D.O. prepares to bring their ‘Touchdown’ tour to North America, metal fans across the continent are buzzing with anticipation. The combination of new material from “Touchdown,” classic U.D.O. tracks, and the possibility of hearing a few ACCEPT favorites makes this tour a must-see event for any serious metal enthusiast.

Whether you’re a long-time follower of Udo Dirkschneider’s career or a newcomer to the world of classic heavy metal, U.D.O.’s 2024 North American tour promises to deliver an unforgettable experience. With Udo’s iconic vocals leading the charge, backed by a band of seasoned metal veterans, it’s sure to be a series of shows that fans will be talking about for years to come. Don’t miss your chance to witness these German metal masters as they bring their thunderous sound to a city near you. It’s more than just a concert - it’s a celebration of heavy metal’s enduring legacy, delivered by one of the genre’s most iconic voices.”

The Wallflowers Embark on Extensive U.S. National Tour: A Celebration of Legacy and Musical Evolution

The Wallflowers, fronted by the legendary Jakob Dylan, are poised to embark on an extensive U.S. national tour this fall, marking a significant chapter in the band’s storied career. Beginning on September 20 at the Graceland Soundstage in Memphis, TN, the tour will see the band traverse the country, offering fans a unique opportunity to experience both classic hits and fresh material. This tour, while not explicitly in support of their latest album, Exit Wounds, will showcase The Wallflowers’ enduring appeal and their ability to connect with audiences across different eras.

With a history spanning over 35

years, The Wallflowers have become a cornerstone of rock music, known for their distinct blend of alternative rock and roots influences. The band’s journey began in 1989, founded by Jakob Dylan, the son of the iconic Bob Dylan. Despite facing numerous changes in personnel, Jakob Dylan has remained the constant force behind the band, steering its creative direction and maintaining its unique sound.

The Wallflowers’ breakthrough came with their second album, Bringing Down the Horse, released in 1996. This album not only marked a significant moment in the band’s career but also established Jakob Dylan as a formidable songwriter in his own right. With hits like “6th Avenue Heartache” and the

Grammy-winning “One Headlight,” the album solidified The Wallflowers’ place in rock history. Their subsequent releases, including Rebel, Sweetheart in 2005 and Exit Wounds in 2021, have continued to demonstrate their evolution and resilience in the music industry.

The upcoming tour will offer fans a chance to experience The Wallflowers’ broad repertoire. While the tour is not a direct promotion for Exit Wounds, the band will likely incorporate songs from their latest album, which was released in July 2021 after a nine-year hiatus. Exit Wounds, produced by Butch Walker and featuring collaborations with Shelby Lynne, addresses themes of perseverance

In a seismic shift for the electronic music landscape, acclaimed UK producer Kevin Richard Martin, known to many as The Bug, has signed with metal powerhouse Relapse Records. This unexpected union heralds the arrival of “Machine,” Martin’s first solo instrumental record as The Bug under this new partnership, set to detonate on October 4th. The announcement has sent ripples through both electronic and metal communities, promising a sonic experience that defies categorization and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in modern music.

“Machine” is not just an album; it’s the culmination of Martin’s decades-long journey through the underground music scene. The project began as a series of self-released “floor weapons” - Martin’s term for his most devastating tracks - dropped on his PRESSURE label’s Bandcamp page between 2023 and 2024. Now, these sonic assaults have been meticulously curated and woven into a cohesive double album that Martin describes as “ice cold and dystopian.”

The Bug’s signature sound, a fusion of futuristic dub, deep electronics, and bass riffs that rival the heaviest metal, has been honed to devastating effect on “Machine.” Martin calls the album’s tracks “apocalyptic dreadtech mutations of crushing intensity,” a description that barely scratches the surface of the aural onslaught contained within.

To give listeners a taste of what’s to come, The Bug has released two tracks from the album: “Buried (Your Life is Short)” and “Bodied (Send For the Hearse).” These songs, now available on streaming services, serve as a warning shot for the impending audio invasion. “Buried” opens with an earthshaking riff over a beat designed to decimate dancefloors, while “Bodied” kicks off with an acid-corroded 4/4 rhythm surrounded by noxious, billowing sounds. Both tracks exemplify Martin’s mastery of what he terms “industrial-strength doom-riff-dub.”

The Bug’s sound has always defied easy categorization, but critics have drawn comparisons to an instrumental SWANS in dub or Aphex Twin covered by Sunn O))). However, Martin’s work on “Machine” cranks up the intensity beyond even these reference points, creating a sonic landscape that is uniquely his own. It’s a testament to Martin’s ability to synthesize diverse influences into something entirely new and utterly devastating.

For vinyl aficionados and collectors,

The Bug

(continued from previous page)

“Machine” will be available in two distinct versions. The standard edition is a 2xLP set featuring 12 handpicked tracks from the original EPs, while a deluxe 5xLP box set, exclusive to Relapse.com, will contain all 21 songs from the five Machine EPs. Both versions promise to be collector’s items, with unique artwork and high-quality pressings that do justice to Martin’s uncompromising sound.

Kevin Richard Martin’s journey as The Bug has been one of constant evolution and surprise. His musical odyssey began in the mid-90s when he started curating the groundbreaking Macro Dub Infection compilations for Virgin Records. These collections were instrumental in introducing a wider audience to the possibilities of dub and electronic music, setting the stage for Martin’s future explorations.

As The Bug, Martin has consistently pushed the envelope of electronic music. His 2008 album “London Zoo,” released on Ninja Tune, was a watershed moment that saw him collaborating with grime MCs like Flowdan to create instant classics like “Skeng.” This ability to bridge genres and scenes has been a hallmark of Martin’s career, attracting collaborators from across the musical spectrum, including Massive Attack, Grace Jones, and even ambient folk artist Grouper.

Martin’s reputation extends far beyond the electronic music scene. Alternative metal luminaries such as members of Neurosis, Sumac, and Primitive Man have praised his work, recognizing a kindred spirit in The Bug’s uncompromising approach to sound. This crossover appeal makes Relapse Records, known for its roster of heavy and experimental artists, a fitting home for The Bug’s latest opus.

The signing with Relapse isn’t Martin’s first foray into the world of metaladjacent music. His long-standing collaboration with Justin Broadrick (of Godflesh and Jesu fame) in projects like Techno Animal and Zonal has already established him as a figure who can move seamlessly between electronic and metal spaces. Relapse recently reissued The Brotherhood of the Bomb and Re-Entry by Martin’s Techno Animal project, further cementing this connection.

“Machine” represents the latest metamorphosis of Martin’s Macro Dub Infection philosophy, celebrating what he calls “atmospheric pressure, and the joy of full body assaults, via oversized sound systems in undersized club rooms.” It’s a continuation of The Bug’s mission to create “killing sound,” a fusion of William Gibsoninspired sci-fi and Jamaican sound systeminfluenced brutality that has become Martin’s trademark.

The album is described as a cohesive and narrative journey through dystopian wildernesses. Throughout its runtime, the

production shakes with scoured textures, black hole gravity, and deceptively crafted nuance. Martin’s singular mastery of ferocious and annihilated bass music holds the record together in a visceral and pummelling assault. He describes the EP sequence from which the album was culled as “separate parts of the overall puzzle that becomes fully realised on this longform album.”

As the October 4th release date approaches, anticipation is building in both electronic and metal circles. “Machine” promises to be more than just an album; it’s a visceral, immersive experience that challenges the limits of what music can be and do. For fans of extreme sounds and those seeking to explore the outer reaches of electronic music, The Bug’s “Machine” is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

The release of “Machine” comes at a time when the lines between electronic music and metal are increasingly blurred. Artists from both worlds are finding common ground in their pursuit of extreme sounds and textures. The Bug’s signing to Relapse and the release of “Machine” could be seen as a watershed moment in this ongoing convergence, potentially opening the door for more cross-pollination between these oncedisparate scenes.

Critics and fans alike are eagerly awaiting the full album, speculating on how Martin will maintain the intensity over a full-

length release. Early reactions to the released tracks suggest that “Machine” could be The Bug’s most uncompromising and powerful statement yet, a distillation of everything that has made his work so compelling over the years.

As the release date draws near, Kevin Richard Martin continues to push himself and his art forward. “Machine” is not just another album in an already impressive discography; it’s a bold statement of intent from an artist who refuses to rest on his laurels. With this release, The Bug once again proves why he’s considered one of the most innovative and uncompromising producers in electronic music.

The music world waits with bated breath, ready to be annihilated by the sheer force of Martin’s vision. Come October 4th, “Machine” will be unleashed, and the landscape of electronic and experimental music may never be the same again.

Pixies Unveil New Single “Oyster Beds” and Announce Limited Edition Vinyl for Upcoming Album “The Night the Zombies Came”

Alternative rock pioneers Pixies are ramping up excitement for their forthcoming album with the release of a new single and the announcement of a special vinyl edition. The band, renowned for their pivotal role in shaping the landscape of alternative rock, is poised to release their tenth studio album, “The Night the Zombies Came,” on October 25th via BMG.

The latest offering from the album, “Oyster Beds,” has been released to streaming platforms, marking another milestone in the build-up to the full album release. Described as a “raw and spirited punk track,” the song exemplifies the band’s enduring ability to craft energetic, captivating music that continues to resonate with both long-time fans and new listeners alike. Black Francis, the band’s enigmatic frontman and primary songwriter, revealed that the track’s inspiration stemmed from his recent return to painting. “It’s a laundry list of things I was painting over the last

couple years,” Francis explained. “I took up painting again when we were recording at Rockfield, and I didn’t stop.” This insight into the creative process behind “Oyster Beds” offers fans a glimpse into the multifaceted artistic pursuits that inform Pixies’ music.

This release follows the wellreceived single “Chicken,” which accompanied the initial album announcement. “Chicken” garnered widespread acclaim from music critics and fans, with notable publications such as The Times and Daily Telegraph featuring it in their essential tracks lists. NME described the track as “haunting,” while MOJO called it “delightfully ghoulish.” The song’s success extends to digital streaming platforms, where it has been added to Spotify’s largest rock playlist, MARROW, which boasts 4.5 million followers. This digital triumph underscores the band’s continued relevance in the streaming era, bridging the gap between their storied past and the current music landscape.

“The Night the Zombies Came” marks a significant milestone for Pixies, coming 35 years after their groundbreaking album “Doolittle” catapulted them into the UK Top Ten, and 20 years since their celebrated reunion at Coachella. The new album, produced by Tom Dalgety (whom drummer David Lovering affectionately refers to as “a fifth Pixie”), promises to be the band’s most cinematic record to date. Dalgety’s involvement, having also produced the band’s previous three albums (2016’s “Head Carrier,” 2019’s “Beneath the Eyrie,” and 2022’s “Doggerel”), suggests a continuation of the sonic exploration that has characterized Pixies’ recent output.

The album’s 13 tracks draw inspiration from an eclectic range of sources, showcasing the band’s wideranging interests and influences. The lyrical content spans topics as diverse as Druidism, apocalyptic shopping malls, medieval-themed restaurants, and 12thcentury poetic forms. Musically, the album incorporates elements of surf rock and even pays homage to the distinctive dry drum sound of 1970s Fleetwood Mac. This diverse palette of influences hints at an album that will both surprise and delight longtime fans while potentially attracting new listeners to the Pixies’ unique sound.

Interestingly, the band noticed during the recording process that the new songs were naturally dividing into two distinct camps. On one side are what they came to call the “Dust Bowl Songs” - country-tinged, ballad-esque numbers such as “Primrose” and “Mercy Me.” On the other side are the album’s more furious punk numbers, including “You’re So Impatient” and “Oyster Beds.” Only one track, “Jane (The Night the Zombies Came),” seems to straddle both camps, with the band describing it as reminiscent of early 60s Phil Spector productions, hitting a sweet spot between “mushy and abrasive.” Black Francis reportedly likened the experience of listening to this track to being chased by a swarm of bees, offering a vivid image of the song’s intensity and energy.

In conjunction with the new single, the band announced a limited edition pearlescent vinyl version of the album through Blood Records. This special release adds to the previously announced formats, which include black vinyl, CD, digital download, and streaming options. HMV and independent record shops will also offer a crystal clear and red smoke

LP variant. These varied physical releases cater to collectors and audiophiles, emphasizing the band’s commitment to the album as a cohesive artistic statement in an era often dominated by singles and playlists.

The new album also marks a significant change in the band’s lineup, with Emma Richardson of Band Of Skulls joining as the new bassist. Richardson’s addition is particularly noteworthy as she becomes the first British member of Pixies, potentially bringing new perspectives and influences to the band’s sound. Additionally, guitarist Joey Santiago has taken on an expanded role in the songwriting process. After contributing his first-ever Pixies lyrics on their previous album “Doggerel,” Santiago has written the words to “Hypnotised” on the new record by completing a complex poetic form known as a sestina. This increased involvement from Santiago in the lyrical aspect of the band’s work suggests an evolution in their collaborative process and could herald new directions in their songwriting.

Pixies are currently in the midst of a busy touring schedule, with sold-out shows in Glasgow and Halifax, as well as festival appearances at All Points East in London and Victorious Festival in Portsmouth. The band’s tour plans extend well into 2024 and 2025, including dates across Europe, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia. Notably, they are set to perform stadium gigs with Pearl Jam in New Zealand and Australia in November, further cementing their status as elder statesmen of alternative rock.

The upcoming concerts mark Pixies’ second visit to the UK this year, following sold-out dates celebrating their “Bossanova” and “Trompe Le Monde” albums, which included a three-night residency at London’s Kentish Town Forum. These shows, focusing on specific albums from their back catalog, demonstrate the enduring appeal of their earlier work while providing context for their new material.

As Pixies prepare to release “The Night the Zombies Came,” it’s clear that the band is far from resting on their laurels. Instead, they continue to push their creative boundaries, blending their iconic sound with new influences and collaborations. The album’s title itself

suggests a playful engagement with genre conventions, potentially hinting at thematic elements that run through the record.

The release of “The Night the Zombies Came” comes at a time when Pixies’ influence on alternative and indie rock is perhaps more apparent than ever. Many of today’s most exciting young bands cite Pixies as a key influence, and their sound continues to resonate through contemporary music. This new album, therefore, isn’t just a new chapter in the band’s own story, but a continuation of their wider impact on the musical landscape.

For fans of alternative rock, the coming months promise to be an exciting time as one of the genre’s most influential bands embarks on this new chapter in their storied career. With “The Night the Zombies Came,” Pixies seem poised to both honor their legacy and push forward into new territory, maintaining their position at the forefront of innovative, boundary-pushing rock music.

Rock Legends and Fresh Talent Collide: Brian Wheat and AleX Form Violet Breed

In a thrilling fusion of rock royalty and emerging talent, Brian Wheat, the iconic bassist and founder of multiplatinum selling band Tesla, has joined forces with rising UK singer/songwriter AleX to create a new musical powerhouse: Violet Breed. Set to make their debut with the single “AWAKE” on September 13, 2024, this collaboration promises to shake up the rock scene with a fresh, cross-generational sound.

Violet Breed represents more than

just a new band; it’s a bridge between rock’s storied past and its exciting future. Brian Wheat, with his four decades of experience in the music industry, brings a wealth of knowledge, skill, and rock credibility to the project. On the other side of the generational divide stands AleX, a dynamic young talent whose contemporary voice and perspective promise to inject new life into the rock genre.

The genesis of Violet Breed is a story of patience, dedication, and artistic synergy. For the past five years, Wheat

and AleX have been working tirelessly behind the scenes, crafting an album that draws deeply from their personal experiences. Their goal? To create music that transcends age barriers and speaks to the universal human experience. With honest, emotionally charged lyrics and a rich sonic palette that blends classic rock power with modern pop sensibilities, Violet Breed is poised to offer something truly unique in today’s music landscape.

Adding to the project’s star power,

the debut album will feature none other than Tesla’s own Dave Rude on guitar. This addition not only enhances the musical depth of Violet Breed’s sound but also creates an intriguing link between Wheat’s past and present musical endeavors. Fans of Tesla and followers of AleX’s burgeoning career are eagerly anticipating this collaborative effort, speculating on how these diverse talents will mesh to create something new and exciting.

The musical DNA of Violet Breed is as diverse as it is impressive. Both Wheat and AleX cite influences ranging from the timeless melodies of The Beatles and the theatrical rock of Queen to the more contemporary sounds of My Chemical Romance. This eclectic mix of inspirations is subtly woven throughout their music, creating a sound that pays homage to rock’s greatest acts while forging a distinct identity all its own.

Brian Wheat’s journey through the music industry reads like a rock and roll fairytale. As a founding member of Tesla, he’s experienced the dizzying highs of platinum albums, world tours, and sold-out arenas. But Wheat’s musical curiosity has always pushed him to explore beyond Tesla’s boundaries. His work with side projects like SouL MotoR showcased his versatility, while his autobiography, ‘Son Of A Milkman’, offered fans an intimate look at the man behind the bass. Now, with Violet Breed, Wheat embarks on perhaps his most intriguing musical adventure yet.

The story of Violet Breed is also one of mentorship and mutual respect. For the past decade, Wheat has taken AleX under his wing, sharing the wisdom gained from his years in the industry. In the studio, Wheat’s production expertise has helped shape and refine AleX’s raw talent, while his industry insights have provided invaluable guidance in navigating the complex world of professional music. It’s a relationship that goes beyond mere collaboration; Wheat sees in AleX echoes of his younger self - the same passion, drive, and undeniable talent that propelled Tesla to stardom.

AleX, for his part, brings a unique set of skills to Violet Breed. With a vocal range that draws comparisons to the legendary Freddie Mercury and a natural gift for songwriting, AleX represents the future of rock. His successful tours, festival appearances, and growing fanbase speak to an artist on the rise, ready to take the next big step in his career.

As Violet Breed prepares to unveil “AWAKE” to the world, the music industry is abuzz with speculation. Will this collaboration successfully bridge the gap between classic and contemporary rock? Can Wheat and AleX’s intergenerational partnership produce something truly groundbreaking?

Early indications suggest that Violet Breed is more than up to the challenge. Those privy to early recording sessions speak of a band that seamlessly blends powerful rock riffs with catchy pop hooks, all underscored by lyrics that are both personal and universally relatable. It’s a combination that could appeal to longtime rock fans while also

attracting a new generation of listeners.

The September 13th release of “AWAKE” is more than just a new single dropping; it’s the opening salvo in what could be rock’s next big story. As Violet Breed steps into the spotlight, they carry with them the weight of expectation, the thrill of new beginnings, and the potential to redefine what rock music can be in the 21st century.

For Brian Wheat, Violet Breed represents a new chapter in an already illustrious career. For AleX, it’s the opportunity to learn from a master while making his own mark on the music world. And for rock fans around the globe, Violet Breed offers the exciting prospect of a band that honors rock’s rich history while boldly steering it into the future.

As September 13th approaches, anticipation continues to build. Will Violet Breed live up to the hype? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the rock world is watching, waiting, and ready to be awakened by this exciting new musical force.

‘Friendlytown’ is not just any album - it’s a star-studded affair featuring collaborations with some of rock’s biggest names. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Queen’s Brian May, and Bad Company’s Simon Kirke all lend their talents to the project, creating a rich tapestry of rock, blues, and soul that showcases Cropper’s enduring influence and creativity.

One of the album’s highlights is the single “You Can’t Refuse,” for which Cropper has also released a music video. The track features the dynamic guitar work of Tim Montana and the powerhouse

rhythm of Simon Kirke. It’s a slithery, Bo Diddley-styled romp that captures Cropper’s signature groove while Montana’s bluesy licks add a fresh energy. The song’s lyrics speak of unwavering devotion, with the catchy refrain, “I’m making you an offer you can’t refuse.”

Cropper shared a funny anecdote about working with Montana: “Tim came to a party I had some time back, and it turns out he was a big fan of my work. When he played on the album, he said ‘just make sure you spell my name right!’” This kind of lighthearted collaboration seems to be a hallmark of the album’s creation.

The album was produced by Cropper himself, alongside bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and longtime friend Jon Tiven, known for his work with Wilson Pickett, Don Covay, and Frank Black. Rounding out the lineup are lead vocalist Roger C. Reale and Nashville’s go-to drummer and percussionist Nioshi Jackson. The album was engineered by Eddie Gore, who also

contributed organ to the tracks.

Cropper’s influence on popular music can’t be overstated. He’s won two GRAMMY Awards from seven nominations and has been ranked as the second greatest guitarist of all time by England’s Mojo Magazine, right behind Jimi Hendrix. Rolling Stone magazine placed him at number 36 in their “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list.

His name is synonymous with the legendary Stax Records, where he co-wrote hits, played guitar, and produced for icons like Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett, and Sam & Dave. After his time at Stax, Cropper’s career continued to flourish, working with artists as diverse as Jeff Beck, John Prine, Ringo Starr, and Elton John.

‘Friendlytown’ contains 13 tracks, each showcasing different facets of Cropper’s musical prowess. From the Brian May-featured “Too Much Stress” to collaborations like “You Can’t Refuse” with Tim Montana, to solo efforts like “I Leave You In Peace,” the album provides a comprehensive look at Cropper’s current musical vision.

Despite his numerous accolades and undeniable impact on popular music, Cropper remains remarkably humble. When asked about his legacy, he simply stated, “When I think about my legacy, I want it to be said that I was a nice guy.”

For fans of classic rock, soul, and blues, ‘Friendlytown’ offers a chance to hear a living legend still at the top of his game, collaborating with both longtime peers and newer talents. It’s a testament to Cropper’s enduring creativity and his ability to bridge generations through music.

As Cropper continues to shape the landscape of American music well into his career, ‘Friendlytown’ stands as both a celebration of his past achievements and an exciting new chapter in his musical journey. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to Cropper’s work, this album promises to be an engaging listen, full of stellar musicianship and soulful grooves.

VOLA

(continued from previous page)

The Danish-Swedish progressive metal band VOLA is back with a mesmerizing new single, “I Don’t Know How We Got Here,” accompanied by a captivating lyric video. This track is a precursor to their highly anticipated fourth studio album, Friend of a Phantom, set to be released on November 1 via Mascot Records. Known for their ability to weave intricate soundscapes with deeply introspective lyrics, VOLA once again pushes the boundaries of their genre with this release.

VOLA is comprised of four talented musicians: Asger Mygind, who serves as the band’s vocalist and guitarist; Martin Werner, who provides the intricate keyboard work; Nicolai Mogensen, who anchors the band with his bass playing; and Adam Janzi, who delivers powerful rhythms on drums. Together, this Danish-Swedish quartet forms the innovative and dynamic sound that defines VOLA.

The single “I Don’t Know How We Got Here” is a poignant exploration of loss and the slow unraveling of relationships, intertwined with reflections on tragic societal events. Asger Mygind, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, shares insights into the song’s themes: “The song interweaves stories about tragic events in society with a story about a relationship slowly dying out. It seeks to portray the feeling of disbelief that follows when something valuable vanishes right in front of us.”

The release of this single marks the beginning of a significant chapter for VOLA, as they prepare to embark on a headline European tour in support of Friend of a Phantom. The tour, aptly named after the album, will kick off on November 1 and will see the band perform across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the UK, and The Netherlands. Fans can expect an electrifying live experience as VOLA showcases their new material alongside their already celebrated discography.

The past three years have been a whirlwind of success for VOLA, following the release of their critically acclaimed album Witness. This period saw the band conquer stages across the globe, including two tours of the United States where overwhelming demand led to upgraded venues and sold-out shows in New York, Chicago, and the iconic Troubadour in Los Angeles. It was during this tour that VOLA struck up a friendship with In Flames’ Anders Fridén, who is set to feature on the new album in the track “Cannibal.” Their first foray into Canada was equally triumphant, with sold-out shows in Toronto and Montreal, followed by a successful tour in South America, culminating in a sold-out show in Chile.

As VOLA prepares to release Friend of a Phantom, the band reflects on their evolution since Witness. Drummer Adam Janzi comments on the band’s growth: “We have had the time to internalize Witness and let its aftermath sink in, which has shaped how we approached Friend of a Phantom. Our personal tastes have changed, the way

we approach our instruments and songwriting has changed, our lives have changed, time has passed, and adventures have been had. Whatever piece of melancholy that Witness had, has just grown and become a central part of this new album. I feel that VOLA has grown and reached a new moment in its life, maturing.”

The band has already given fans a taste of what’s to come with the release of the video for “Break My Lying Tongue.” This track is a perfect showcase of VOLA’s signature blend of introspective lyrics and intricate soundscapes. The song dives deep into themes of misalignment and emotional vulnerability, with haunting melodies that linger long after the last note fades.

In addition to their new single, VOLA previously released “Paper Wolf” last year, another track from the forthcoming album. Mygind explains the song’s unique sound: “We never put boundaries on our songwriting but

merely search for a direction that feels unexplored and exciting to us. With ‘Paper Wolf,’ we suddenly found ourselves in a territory where an oldschool metal atmosphere crept into our blend of sounds. We liked what we heard and then ran with it at full speed.”

VOLA’s innovative approach to progressive metal has made them one of Europe’s most exciting metal bands, earning them a place on the international stage. Their powerful live performances have seen them tour with heavyweights like Devin Townsend, including a memorable show at the Royal Albert Hall in London. They have also opened for Evanescence and graced the stages of major festivals such as ArcTanGent in the UK, Graspop in Belgium, Tuska in Finland, Roskilde in Denmark, and Copenhell in Denmark.

As VOLA continues to evolve, they remain committed to embracing change and exploring new musical

territories. Janzi reflects on the band’s journey: “There is always the pressure of continuing to climb the mountain. Embracing change and whatever new chapters may wait around the corner is a way to make life more enjoyable.”

With Friend of a Phantom, VOLA is set to deliver another groundbreaking album that will captivate both longtime fans and new listeners alike. The band’s ability to blend intense rhythmic complexity with poignant lyrical narratives ensures that their music will continue to resonate with audiences across the globe. As they prepare to embark on their European tour, the anticipation for what comes next from VOLA has never been higher.

Multiple GRAMMY® and Academy Award-winning artist, songwriter, and producer FINNEAS has re-emerged onto the music scene with a fresh new single, “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” Released today, the track comes with an official music video and serves as the lead single for his highly anticipated second solo studio album, also titled For Cryin’ Out Loud!, set to drop on October 4 via Interscope Records. This announcement marks an exciting new chapter in FINNEAS’ already illustrious career, one that promises to further solidify his status as one of the most innovative and influential figures in contemporary music.

The creation of For Cryin’ Out Loud! represents a significant evolution in FINNEAS’ artistic journey. While his debut album Optimist was characterized by its intimate, self-produced sound, this new project sees the artist stepping outside the confines of the solitary, bedroom-producer approach. Instead, FINNEAS embraced a more collaborative and expansive process, recording the album during a series of live studio sessions in Los Angeles. By inviting some of his closest friends and musical peers into the studio, he cultivated an environment that fostered creativity and experimentation, resulting in what is being described as his most raw and uplifting work to date.

The single “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” is a testament to this new direction. The track captures a sense of liberation and energy that feels both refreshing and deeply resonant. It’s a song that not only showcases FINNEAS’ talent as a songwriter and producer but also highlights his ability to connect with listeners on a visceral level. The accompanying music video, directed by Isaac Ravishankara, adds another layer to the experience, offering a visually stunning and emotionally charged narrative that perfectly complements the song’s themes.

This latest release comes at a time when FINNEAS is riding a wave of unprecedented success. Earlier this year, he achieved yet another milestone by winning his second Academy Award for Best Original Song with “What Was I Made For?,” a track he co-wrote and produced for the Barbie movie soundtrack. This achievement adds to an already impressive list of accolades, including multiple GRAMMY® Awards, Golden Globe® Awards, and critical acclaim for his work across various projects.

In addition to his solo work, FINNEAS has also been a key collaborator on a number of high-profile projects. His work on his sister Billie Eilish’s third

studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, further solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the music industry. The album, like much of his previous work with Eilish, has been praised for its innovative sound and emotionally resonant lyrics, showcasing the siblings’ unique synergy and artistic vision.

But FINNEAS’ talents extend far beyond the recording studio. In recent years, he has also made a significant impact in the world of film and television scoring. This fall, he will make his television scoring debut with the Apple TV+ limited series Disclaimer, written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. The show, which stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, and Sacha Baron Cohen among others, is already generating considerable buzz and is expected to be one of the standout releases of the season.

This move into television scoring

represents just one of the many ways FINNEAS continues to expand his creative horizons. His previous work in film scoring, including the original scores for HBO Max’s award-winning The Fallout and BJ Novak’s Vengeance, as well as his contributions to the Disney PIXAR animated film Turning Red, have all demonstrated his versatility and ability to adapt his musical talents to different mediums. These forays into scoring have not only showcased his ability to craft compelling musical narratives but have also introduced his work to new audiences, further broadening his already substantial influence.

As anticipation builds for the October 4 release of For Cryin’ Out Loud!, it’s clear that FINNEAS is poised to continue his ascent as one of the most dynamic and multifaceted artists of his generation. His unique ability to blend heartfelt lyrics with innovative production techniques, combined with his keen visual storytelling, has set him apart in the music industry, earning him both critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.

The release of “For Cryin’ Out

Loud!” offers just a glimpse of what is to come from this remarkable album. With its infectious energy and emotional depth, the single is likely to resonate with listeners long after the first listen, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most talked-about albums of the year. As FINNEAS continues to push the boundaries of his craft, both as a solo artist and a collaborator, his influence on the landscape of modern music shows no signs of waning. For now, fans and critics alike can look forward to the release of For Cryin’ Out Loud!—an album that is sure to be a defining moment in his already stellar career.

Grand Rapids-based indie rock band

The Crane Wives have released their haunting new track and lyric video, “Scars,” now available on all streaming platforms. The song, which delves deep into personal trauma and the healing process, serves as a preview of their forthcoming fifth studio album, Beyond Beyond Beyond, set for release on September 6, 2024. Currently on tour across North America, the band has also announced additional dates throughout the southern and western U.S. for the fall.

“Scars” is an intimate and introspective piece that explores the lasting impact of past traumas and how they shape one’s identity. The track, born from vocalist and guitarist Emilee Petersmark’s personal experiences as an adopted child, features haunting guitar and bass riffs, bombastic percussion, and heavy counter-melodies that create an underlying tension. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a tumultuous relationship, highlighting the struggles and scars left behind.

Petersmark reflects on the song’s significance: “I see ‘Scars’ as a companion piece to one of our older songs, ‘Never Love an Anchor’. I wrote both songs from a place of exploring how being adopted has touched my life, in good ways and in hard ways. I think we often forget how much trauma is involved in the process of losing a family, even when you gain another, and this song felt like a big step in accepting that trauma, particularly the painful, ugly ways it manifests and follows you into adulthood.”

The band’s new album, Beyond Beyond Beyond, is a self-produced effort that explores themes of fear, joy, and vulnerability. The eleven-track album is a journey through the complexities of personal growth, asking listeners to confront heavy questions about strength, bravery, and deserving happiness. With its shimmery, other-worldly melodies and encouraging messages, the album guides listeners through dark spaces, offering momentum to move forward.

The Crane Wives have always been known for their unique sound, and Beyond Beyond Beyond is no exception. The album prominently features the lead guitar work of songwriters and singers Kate Pillsbury and Emilee Petersmark, along with drummer Dan Rickabus’s dynamic rhythms and bassist Ben Zito’s narrative movement. The album also includes contributions from guest violinist Samantha Cooper and guest cellist Jordan Hamilton, adding distinct emotional layers to the music. The band’s longtime collaborator, visual artist Rebecca Green, returned to

create her fifth piece of album artwork for the project.

Rickabus shares insights into the album’s creation: “We tried to challenge ourselves to shake loose from our old patterns and explore what is possible between the four of us. Those brave experiments mean even more to me when I think about the lyrical content of the album. The album begins with inner-conflict and moves through a very human process of growth toward a bold belief in possibility, and an attempt to create change. So, that sense of creative experimentation really resonates.”

In July, the band released the lead single “Arcturus Beaming,” a gentle exploration of simultaneous grief and gratitude, culminating in a realization of personal empowerment. The song’s building energy and poignant lyrics encapsulate the band’s ethos of change and growth.

The Crane Wives are currently captivating audiences throughout North America, with new fall tour dates added across Texas, California, and more. They will celebrate the release of Beyond Beyond Beyond with a special show in their hometown of Grand Rapids, MI, on September 6. Tickets for all tour dates are available now.

Since their formation in 2010, The Crane Wives have built a global community with their spirited live shows, evocative lyricism, and glimmering harmonies. The band has amassed over 1 million Spotify monthly listeners and 100 million total streams. They have shared stages with notable acts like The Avett Brothers, Lake Street Dive, Rusted Root, The Dead South, and Joseph. In 2017, they won JBL’s “Best American Band Contest” and were named

one of Paste Magazine’s “12 Michigan Acts You Should Be Listening To Now.” They have also been featured by Michigan Radio and NPR’s “All Songs Considered,” and have received several local accolades, including the WYCE Best Rock/Pop album for their 2016 full-length studio record, Foxlore

As a band that emerged from the 2010s folk boom, The Crane Wives have consistently evolved their sound, gravitating towards high-energy melodies while their lyrics explore the shadow side of the human condition. Their music delves into mythology and themes of darkness and inner conflict, making them a unique voice in the indie genre. The band has performed over 600 shows across the U.S., captivating audiences with their emotionally charged performances and soulful three-part harmonies.

The Crane Wives have a distinct lineup that contributes to their unique sound. The pulse of the band, Ben Zito (bass) and Dan Rickabus (drums), creates a groovy backdrop integral to the band’s sound. Co-leads Emilee Petersmark and Kate Pillsbury duel on electric guitar and strongly-belted vocals, softening the blows of their emotional candor with harmonies reminiscent of a 21st-century Cerberus, the hound of Hades reimagined as an emotional support animal. To date, they have released five full-length albums, including their 2020 live album, Here I Am

The Crane Wives continue to push the boundaries of their music, blending highenergy melodies with lyrics that explore the

complexities of the human experience. Their new album, Beyond Beyond Beyond, promises to be a significant milestone in their artistic journey, offering fans a deeper, more introspective look into the band’s growth and evolution.

“Scars,” the poignant, swirling track out now, allows The Crane Wives to reflect on past experiences as they forge a path toward healing. Beyond Beyond Beyond, the rich, layered fifth LP by The Crane Wives, is due out September 6 and available for preorder now. Don’t miss The Crane Wives live this month and next across North America.

Born of the 2010’s folk boom and now comfortably stationed in their rock and roll era, The Crane Wives epitomize the evolving sound of the indie genre. Having performed hundreds of shows on stages across the country, they gravitate toward high-energy melodies while their lyrics extol the shadow side of the human condition, delving into mythology and themes of darkness and inner conflict. The band has amassed over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, racking up over 100 million streams on their most popular songs and accumulating listenership from farflung corners of the US to the UK, Australia, Germany, Brazil, Poland, Mexico, and the Philippines.

the original 1989 video for “Turtle Song,” directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Adam Bernstein, renowned for his work on The B-52’s iconic “Love Shack” video.

In conjunction with these releases, Hugo Largo is also unveiling a comprehensive box set titled Huge, Large and Electric: Hugo Largo 1984-1991. This set includes remastered versions of their groundbreaking albums Drum and Mettle, along with an album of previously unreleased material titled Unreleased and Live: 1984-1991. The box set will be available as a three-LP or two-CD collection on September 13 via Missing Piece Records.

Hugo Largo, consisting of Mimi Goese, Adam Peacock, Hahn Rowe, and Tim Sommer, was a product of New York’s Lower East Side new noise scene. Their unconventional lineup—featuring two bass guitars, electric violin, and vocals—garnered attention and acclaim for its originality and the way it pushed the boundaries of the era’s musical expectations. Inspired by a diverse range of influences from Peter Gabriel to Sonic Youth and NYC performance artists, the band created a sound that mixed the noise of the Lower East Side with the grace of Young Marble Giants and Arthur Russell, laying the groundwork for the ‘slowcore’ movement.

“Hugo Largo remains one of the freshest and most contemporary groups of our time. These songs are sweet lullabies for a troubled world,” said Michael Stipe of R.E.M., who produced their debut album Drum alongside the band. The New York Times described Hugo Largo’s music as “a dreamlike species of New York rock - lullabies for post moderns.”

Brian Eno, who released Mettle on his Opal Records label, spoke highly of the band’s impact: “When I heard this band for the first time, I thought this is going to be historic. I know it will affect other artists and that’s what some music does. When I heard Hugo Largo, I knew that they were this kind of band. That they had taken a position that would open up all sorts of possibilities for other musicians.”

The box set also includes an album’s worth of new material,

Unreleased and Live: 1984-1991, further cementing Hugo Largo’s legacy as a pioneering force in the music world. Previously, the band shared two tracks from Drum, “Second Skin” and “Eureka,” featuring Michael Stipe. Both Drum and Mettle have long been unavailable but have achieved cult classic status among avid collectors and their peers in the industry, including David Byrne and Stipe himself.

As Tim Sommer reflects, “Hugo Largo was never, ever one of us; it was only all of us.” The band’s innovative approach and commitment to pushing sonic boundaries continue to resonate, ensuring their place in the annals of music history.

The Huge, Large and Electric: Hugo Largo 1984-1991 box set, along with the remastered tracks “Martha” and “Turtle Song,” is set to reignite interest in Hugo Largo’s distinctive sound and enduring influence. Fans old and new can look forward to exploring the rich, dreamlike world of Hugo Largo when the box set is released on September 13.

Other standout tracks include “Edge of Reality,” inspired by the 1986 Highlander movie, and “Bloodlines,” which references the Vampire: The Masquerade series of board and video games, showcasing the band’s colorful storytelling.

FROZEN CROWN’s journey has seen them perform at several notable festivals, including Sabaton Open Air, Metal Fest Plzen, and Rock Imperium Festival. They have headlined two Japanese tours and extensively toured Europe with significant bands such as DragonForce and Nanowar Of Steel, culminating in a tour with U.D.O. in 2023. The addition of Alessia Lanzone to the lineup has only enhanced their characteristic sound, expanding it with her skills and adding a new dimension to their performances.

As they prepare to release War Hearts and embark on a tour with Kamelot this fall, FROZEN CROWN continues to define and refine their sound, pushing their trademark elements to new levels of complexity while maintaining the catchy hooks that have become their hallmark. This new album exceeds their previous successes and solidifies their place in the global metal scene.

“War Hearts is our fifth album, but it’s also the first one as a six-piece band and the first one on Napalm Records. It’s also the first album where all members actually make their appearance on the recording,” the band stated. “For these reasons, War Hearts represents a new beginning, a fresh start, and it may be considered the first episode of FROZEN CROWN’s ‘reboot’. We wrote and arranged this album acting like we had no history at all, never afraid to repeat some of our trademark stylistic features. On the contrary, we highlighted and gave more value to them, to make our new

songs sound 100% like us. We worked hard on the material to cut away all the useless parts and make the songs as catchy and straightforward as they could be, and to make them sound like quintessential FROZEN CROWN.”

With War Hearts, FROZEN CROWN invites fans to embrace the power and feel the passion of their striking new album. Prepare to be enthralled by their powerful riffs, captivating melodies, and the raw energy that has come to define this exceptional band.

ence, crafted by members of notable bands INTER ARMA, ARTIFICIAL BRAIN, and PSYCROPTIC.

DREAMLESS VEIL is comprised of a powerhouse trio: Artificial Brain guitarist Dan Gargiulo, Inter Arma and Artificial Brain vocalist Mike Paparo, and Psycroptic drummer Dave Haley. Together, they manifest a terrifying blackened extreme metal sound that delves deep into the darkest recesses of human emotion and existential dread.

The band’s debut album, Every Limb of the Flood, is a blackened concept album that narrates the harrowing journey of Grief, a character who awakens from a state of extended debauchery and embarks on a slow, torturous process of trying to disappear completely. Through eight meticulously crafted tracks, DREAMLESS VEIL invites listeners to contemplate the experience of an individual attempting to fully vanish from existence.

The album opens with “Dim Golden Rave,” thrusting listeners into an ambiguous time and place with vivid imagery: “Grief, spiritless, collapses against the filth-ridden street.” The narrative continues with “A Generation of Eyes,” which quotes Neil Young’s haunting sentiment, “rust never sleeps,” to evoke a powerful, internal decomposition of grief. The journey reaches its grim conclusion in the album’s closer, “Dreamless,” where the body is fully discarded, hinting at a potential enlightenment achieved through a horrific, gruesome process.

Sonically, Every Limb of the Flood is a caustic and corrosive journey, characterized by dramatic swells, melodic crescendos, and abrasive blastbeat poundings that transition into introspective moments of pure horror. Vocalist Mike Paparo delivers an unchained performance with pained shrieks and disembodied bellows, exploring the concept of corporeal disintegration in a manner that is both raw and evocative.

Tracks such as “Saturnism” and

“Cyanide Mine” further explore the album’s themes, with Paparo and his bandmates tasking the listener to consider the existential weight of disappearing completely. The lyrics throughout the record are designed to show, but not explicitly tell, alluding to a misery that ultimately leads to grotesquery.

Critically acclaimed drummer

Dave Haley showcases some of his most creative work to date, dragging listeners through wild tempo changes and breakneck speeds that come to sudden halts. Guitarist Dan Gargiulo interweaves disorienting guitar madness, adding layers of complexity and dissonance to the album’s sonic landscape.

Recorded by Brett Bamberger (Revocation), Every Limb of the Flood was mixed by Gargiulo and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice, and more), ensuring a production quality that matches the album’s ambitious and harrowing vision.

The lead single, “A Generation of Eyes,” is already available for streaming and offers a taste of the intense and haunting experience that DREAMLESS

VEIL has crafted. Fans can pre-order the album and listen to the single via the link: bit.ly/dreamlessveil.

Their unique blend of blackened metal, combined with a compelling narrative and top-tier musicianship, sets the stage for one of the most haunting releases of the year. As they prepare to unleash their debut album, DREAMLESS VEIL invites listeners to embrace the darkness and experience the full, terrifying journey of Grief.

In the ever-evolving landscape of extreme metal, few bands have managed to capture the raw energy, technical prowess, and thought-provoking lyricism quite like New England’s Escuela Grind. As the crisp autumn air settles over the Northeast, the music world braces itself for what promises to be a seismic shift in the genre. On October 18, Escuela Grind will unleash their sophomore album, ‘Dreams on Algorithms’, via MNRK Heavy, home to such legendary acts as High on Fire and Zakk Wylde.

The anticipation surrounding this release is palpable, and for good reason. Escuela Grind’s 2022 debut, ‘Memory Theater’, was nothing short of a revelation, earning accolades from critics and fans alike. The New York Times, not typically known for its coverage of extreme metal, hailed it as “an opus of extremity,” signaling that Escuela Grind was a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

But how does a band follow up such a monumental debut? For Escuela Grind, the answer lies in pushing boundaries even

further, both sonically and thematically. ‘Dreams on Algorithms’ is not just an album; it’s a bold statement about the intersection of technology, consciousness, and human experience in the digital age.

Recorded at the hallowed GodCity studio in Salem, Massachusetts, ‘Dreams on Algorithms’ benefits from the expert touch of producer Kurt Ballou, known for his work with some of the most innovative names in heavy music. The album’s sound was further refined by mastering engineer Nick Townsend, whose diverse portfolio includes work with hip-hop legend Dr. Dre and funk pioneer Betty Davis. This blend of extreme metal expertise and broader musical influences hints at the genre-defying nature of the album.

Vocalist Katerina Economou, the powerful voice and lyrical mind behind Escuela Grind, offers insight into the album’s conceptual framework. “We wanted to write an album that identifies what it’s like to consume in this era we live in,” Economou explains. “What we receive through our phones, the social media landscape, and personalized algorithms, and how it is translated by our subconscious.” This exploration of the digital world’s impact on our psyche is not just a passing theme but the very backbone of ‘Dreams on Algorithms’.

The album’s first single, “Always Watching You,” serves as a perfect introduction to this concept. Economou delves into the song’s origins: “I’ve had this desire to write a song where I could portray the obsessive-stalker-girl archetype through lyrics for a while. Although not physically threatening, it’s really interesting that society is so terrified of this stereotype.” The track blends fantastical, horror-inspired imagery reminiscent of “Nightmare on Elm Street” with the gore and intensity characteristic of death metal. But beneath the surface, it tackles weighty themes of parasocial relationships, social media anxieties, and the omnipresent nature of digital algorithms.

As if to underscore their commitment to pushing boundaries, Escuela Grind’s second single, “Turbulence,” introduces an element previously unheard in their music: clean vocals. This departure from their usual style came about in an almost serendipitous manner. Drummer Jesse Fuentes recounts a pivotal moment during their European tour with Napalm Death in the winter of 2023. “My last in-person conversation with Napalm Death’s Shane Embury was very emotional; he suggested we add clean vocals after he overheard Katerina doing some clean singing on the tour bus,” Fuentes reveals.

The inspiration for “Turbulence” itself came from a harrowing personal experience. “I had the idea for the ‘Turbulence’ title during a plane ride where I thought I was actually gonna die,” Fuentes admits. “My

(continued from previous page)

mind was fixated on landing and playing the next show. It helped me cope, and then it kept happening on a couple of flights after that.”

This blend of personal experience and musical evolution resulted in a track that Economou describes as “a risk” but one that the band was ready to take after their extensive live performances over the past year.

The album’s third single, “Concept of God,” accompanied by a visually striking video directed by Seby X Martinez, further showcases the band’s thematic depth.

“‘Concept of God’ is about the chaos that ensues when humans come together; the good and bad things that happen when opposites and like-minded individuals attract,” the band explains. The track’s central lyric, “the concept of god only exists because of people,” encapsulates the band’s willingness to grapple with complex philosophical ideas within the framework of extreme metal.

Visually, ‘Dreams on Algorithms’ is as captivating as it is aurally. The album cover, created by artist AC Tremblay, is a mesmerizing piece that rewards close inspection.

Drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as the art of Kurt Seligmann, Bauhaus theater sets, “Nightmare on Elm Street,” the costume designs of Eiko Ishioka, and Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle, the artwork is a visual feast that complements the album’s thematic complexity. “The amount of detail and attention that AC Tremblay pays to his drawing is what we love most about working with him,” the band enthuses.

“You’ll be able to find many Easter eggs from the album’s lyrics within the artwork. We’re still finding new details.”

As ‘Dreams on Algorithms’ prepares to make its mark on the music world, industry insiders are already taking note of Escuela Grind’s meteoric rise. Metal Injection praises the band’s “moxie one would die slow and painfully for,” while Knotfest observes that they are “bulldozing a path through heavy

music on their own terms.” The Miami New Times highlights the band’s “politically charged lyrics that reflect modern anxieties and unrest,” underscoring Escuela Grind’s ability to channel contemporary concerns through their intense musical lens.

The core of Escuela Grind’s sound comes from the synergy between its members: Katerina Economou’s searing vocals, Jesse Fuentes’ thunderous drums, Kris Morash’s razor-sharp guitar work, and Justin Altamirano’s pulsating bass lines. Together, they create a sonic assault that is as technically impressive as it is emotionally resonant.

As the October 18 release date approaches, the anticipation within the metal community continues to build. ‘Dreams on Algorithms’ promises to be more than just an album; it’s poised to be a watershed moment in extreme metal. By fearlessly incorporating clean vocals, tackling complex themes, and pushing the boundaries of their sound, Escuela Grind is not just participating in the evolution of the genre – they’re actively shaping its future.

The band hints at upcoming festival appearances where fans will have the opportunity

to experience the new material live, including the chance to sing along to the unexpectedly catchy chorus of “Turbulence.” This blend of accessibility and extremity might just be the key to broadening the appeal of grindcore and extreme metal to a wider audience.

As we stand on the precipice of this new release, one thing is clear: ‘Dreams on Algorithms’ is set to cement Escuela Grind’s position as one of the most innovative and exciting bands in contemporary extreme metal. In an age where digital technology increasingly shapes our reality, Escuela Grind has crafted a sonic experience that not only reflects this new world but challenges listeners to engage with it critically. When the album drops on October 18, it won’t just be Escuela Grind’s dreams running on algorithms – it’ll be the entire extreme metal scene, recalibrating to a new standard of musical and thematic complexity.

The Meringues

(continued from previous page)

In a thrilling announcement that’s set to electrify the Canadian music scene, Kingston, Ontario’s post-punk powerhouse The Meringues have unveiled their latest single “Royalty,” scheduled for release on August 14th, 2024. This vibrant track serves as the vanguard for their highly anticipated sophomore album, “Pavlova’s Dog,” which is slated to hit the airwaves on September 16th, 2024. The release of “Royalty” marks a significant milestone for the band, showcasing their evolution and solidifying their position as one of the most exciting acts to emerge from the Kingston music scene in recent years.

The Meringues, a mixed-gender quartet, have carved out a unique niche in the music landscape with their seamless fusion of post-punk, alt-rock, and new wave elements. Their sound resonates with fans of iconic bands such as Pixies, Weezer, and The Strokes, while also drawing comparisons to contemporary acts like The Beaches, July Talk, Wet Leg, and PUP. This eclectic blend of influences has allowed The Meringues to create a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly original, appealing to a wide range of music enthusiasts.

At the core of The Meringues’ dynamic sound are Amanda Pants and Ted Evans, whose vocal interplay and onstage chemistry form the beating heart of the band. Their performances blur the lines between playful banter and fierce rivalry, creating an electric atmosphere that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. This captivating duo is backed by the solid rhythm section of Jackson Baird on bass and Alastair Morrison on drums, whose tight, driving rhythms provide the perfect foundation for Amanda and Ted’s vocal acrobatics. Together, they create a live experience that teeters on the edge of controlled chaos while maintaining a clear artistic

vision.

The new single, “Royalty,” delves deep into the complexities of human relationships and personal disillusionment. Amanda Pants, speaking about the track, explains, “‘Royalty’ explores that disorienting feeling when you realize you’ve been wrong about someone or something. It’s about the moment of clarity when the idealized version of a person crumbles, revealing a different, often disappointing reality.” This theme resonates strongly with the band’s ethos of exploring the intersection between fun and dysfunction, a hallmark of their songwriting style.

The recording process for “Royalty” was a journey in itself, taking place across multiple locations including the renowned Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Todd’s Place in Harrowsmith, and Fake Cake Lodge in Kingston. This approach allowed the band to capture different elements of their sound in environments that best suited each aspect of the recording. The track benefited from the expertise of

drum recording engineer Camille Comeau, with additional recording by Ted Evans himself. The mixing was handled by the talented Ian Docherty, while Elisa Kady Pangsaeng at CPS Mastering in Vancouver, BC, put the finishing touches on the mastering, ensuring a polished and professional sound that still retains the raw energy of The Meringues’ live performances.

Accompanying the single is a visually striking music video directed, shot, and edited by Josh Lyon of akaflk productions. Ted Evans recounts the experience of creating the video: “We shot the video in a beautiful, older building on one of the hottest days of the year. Despite the challenging conditions, working with Josh was fantastic. He really brought our vision to life.” The video prominently features bassist Jackson Baird, especially during the bass-driven section following the guitar solo, which Ted describes as one of his favorite parts of the album. This visual representation of the song adds another layer to the band’s artistic expression,

providing fans with a multi-sensory experience of “Royalty.”

Interestingly, “Royalty” almost didn’t make it onto the album. Ted Evans shares, “Initially, I didn’t think ‘Royalty’ would make the album cut. But once the lyrics came together and Alastair and Jackson added their parts, it quickly became a standout track. The music video has now solidified it as a band favorite.” This anecdote provides insight into the band’s creative process, highlighting how collaboration and organic development play crucial roles in shaping their music.

Known for their explosive live performances, The Meringues have rapidly gained recognition in the Canadian music scene. Their dynamic presence has earned them opportunities to open for established acts like Protest the Hero and D.O.A., and they’ve graced festival stages such as NXNE, Canadian Music Week, and Spring Reverb. These high-profile appearances have allowed the band to showcase their unique sound and captivating stage presence to evergrowing audiences, further cementing their reputation as a must-see live act.

The Meringues’ growing acclaim is evidenced by their charting success across Canadian college radio and their 2020 win for Best Music Video with

“The Lottery” at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival. These achievements underscore the band’s ability to connect with audiences both through their recorded music and visual artistry, a rare combination that sets them apart in the crowded music landscape.

The upcoming album, “Pavlova’s Dog,” promises to be a tour de force, further exploring the intersection of fun and dysfunction that The Meringues have perfected. Spanning 11 tracks, the album weaves together deep psychological themes with playful, child-like perspectives, all set to catchy melodies and poignant lyrics. This juxtaposition of light and dark elements reflects the band’s nuanced approach to songwriting, offering listeners a rich and multifaceted musical experience.

Ted Evans reflects on the album’s significance: “Pavlova’s Dog represents a crucial moment for us as a band. It captures the complexity of human relationships and the dark undercurrents of self-doubt and personal struggle that we all face. We’re excited to share this

piece of ourselves with our fans.” This sentiment echoes the band’s commitment to authenticity and emotional honesty in their music, traits that have endeared them to their growing fanbase.

The creation of “Pavlova’s Dog” involved a collaborative effort from various industry professionals. The album was recorded across multiple locations, mixed by Ian Docherty, and mastered by Elisa Kady Pangsaeng at CPS Mastering in Vancouver, BC. The cover photo was shot by Kaufmann Photography, with cover design by Liam Mills. The band’s striking image was further enhanced by hair and makeup from Bohemian Beauty Spa, with wardrobe curated by Amanda and Ted themselves. This attention to detail extends beyond the music, encompassing all aspects of the band’s visual and auditory presentation.

As The Meringues gear up for the release of “Royalty” and the subsequent album drop, music lovers can anticipate a fresh wave of post-punk energy that’s set to make waves in the Canadian music landscape and beyond. The band’s unique sound, captivating stage presence, and profound lyrical depth position them as torchbearers for a new generation of rock music, one that isn’t afraid to explore the complexities of the human experience while still delivering infectious, high-energy performances.

With “Royalty” and “Pavlova’s Dog,” The Meringues are poised to take their place among the vanguard of Canadian rock acts. Their ability to blend genres, coupled with their dynamic live shows and thoughtful lyricism, suggests that this release could be a turning point not just for the band, but for the broader post-punk and alternative rock scenes. As September 16th approaches, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be one of the most exciting album releases of 2024. For fans of intelligent, energetic rock music, The Meringues and their new offerings are not to be missed.

Finnish Modern Metal Sensation ARCTIS Takes the World by Storm

ARCTIS online:

In a groundbreaking development that has sent shockwaves through the global metal community, Finnish modern metal powerhouse ARCTIS has officially signed a record deal with renowned label Napalm Records. This monumental partnership marks the beginning of what industry insiders are already hailing as a new era in the evolution of modern metal, promising to redefine the boundaries of heavy music and captivate audiences worldwide.

ARCTIS, a band that has been steadily building buzz in the underground metal scene, is poised to explode onto the international stage with a unique sound that fearlessly blends the raw power of metal with the catchy hooks of rock and pop. Drawing inspiration from the mythical winters and mystical summers of their Nordic homeland, ARCTIS has crafted a sonic identity that is as vast and aweinspiring as the Arctic landscapes that share their name.

At the helm of this formidable musical force is the enigmatic Alva

Sandström, whose mesmerizing vocals and striking stage presence have already earned her the moniker of “Ice Queen Rebel Leader” among the band’s growing fanbase. Clad in a shining white battle suit that seems to glow with an otherworldly light, Alva cuts a figure that is both fierce and ethereal, embodying the dual nature of ARCTIS’ music - at once brutal and beautiful. Her powerful voice, capable of both soaring melodies and guttural growls, serves as the perfect conduit for the band’s complex narratives and emotional depth.

Flanking Alva are the dark-clad, valiant men who form the backbone of ARCTIS’ sound. Björn Johansson, known as “the Captain,” leads the charge with his unwavering guitar work and leadership skills. His riffs are the foundation upon which ARCTIS builds its sonic castles, blending technical prowess with an innate understanding of what makes a song truly memorable. Michael Mikander, dubbed “the Magician,” weaves spells with his mystical guitar abilities, his solos dancing between dimensions and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on six strings.

Mats Ödahl, “the Rambler,” infuses the band’s sound with a wild, untamed spirit on bass. His thunderous low-end provides the perfect counterpoint to the guitarists’ pyrotechnics, grounding the music while simultaneously propelling it forward. Rounding out the lineup is Mika Paananen, “the Sage,” whose profound drumming elevates ARCTIS’ message to new heights. More than just keeping time, Mika’s drumming is a crucial element of the band’s storytelling, his rhythms evoking the pulse of ancient forests and the crash of Arctic waves.

The signing with Napalm Records is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey for ARCTIS. The label, known for its keen ear and ability to spot emerging talent, sees in ARCTIS a band with the potential to reshape the metal landscape. In a statement, Napalm Records expressed their excitement about the partnership, saying, “ARCTIS represents the future of metal. Their unique blend of heavy riffs, captivating melodies, and rich storytelling is exactly what the genre needs right now. We’re thrilled to be part of their journey and can’t wait for the world to hear what they have in store.”

Adding to the excitement, the band has announced that they will be embarking on a tour with Finnish symphonic metal masters Apocalyptica, a pairing that has metal fans around the world buzzing with anticipation. This tour is set to be a showcase of the best that modern Finnish metal has to offer, blending ARCTIS’ fresh, innovative sound with Apocalyptica’s established mastery of symphonic metal. The combination promises to be a feast for the ears, offering audiences a chance to experience the full spectrum of what modern metal can be.

But perhaps the most exciting news for fans is the announcement of ARCTIS’ self-titled debut album, set to be released this fall. Produced by Jimmy Westerlund, known for his work with Sturm und Drang, mixed by Stefan Glaumann of Rammstein fame, and mastered by the renowned Svante Forsbäck, also known for his work with Rammstein, the album promises to be a tour de force of modern metal production. This dream team of producers and engineers brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of creating sonically stunning and commercially successful metal albums.

The band has teased that their first single will be released soon, giving fans their first taste of what ARCTIS has in store. If the buzz surrounding the band is any indication, this single is set to take the metal world by storm, potentially redefining what modern metal can be in the

process. Speculation is rife about what the single will sound like, with fans eagerly dissecting every hint and teaser the band has dropped on social media.

What sets ARCTIS apart from their contemporaries is not just their music, but the rich lore and backstory they’ve created to accompany their sonic assault. The band offers a multi-dimensional experience for fans, with a deep mythology that extends beyond the realm of music. This approach to world-building has already captured the imagination of fans, who are eagerly piecing together the narrative threads woven throughout ARCTIS’ work.

The band’s mythology draws heavily from Nordic folklore and futuristic sci-fi concepts, creating a unique universe where ancient magic and advanced technology coexist. Each band member has their own detailed backstory and role within this universe, adding depth to their stage personas and giving fans multiple entry points into the world of ARCTIS. This rich narrative tapestry not only enhances the listening experience but also opens up possibilities for expansion into other media, such as graphic novels, video games, and even film or television adaptations.

In a statement released by the band, ARCTIS declared, “Get ready to experience the next chapter of modern metal! We are ARCTIS, a new force rising from the heart of Finland, and we are beyond thrilled to announce that we will be joining the legendary Apocalyptica on their fall tour! Our debut album is dropping this fall, with singles set to blow your minds before then. Prepare for an onslaught of powerful riffs, epic melodies, and the raw energy you’ve been craving. Follow us on this journey as we bring the storm. Are you ready? Stay tuned for more updates and tour dates. This is just the beginning.”

The metal community has responded to this announcement with overwhelming enthusiasm. Fan forums and social media platforms are abuzz with speculation about what ARCTIS will bring to the table, with many predicting that the band could be the next big thing in metal. The hashtag #ARCTISiscoming has been trending on various platforms, with fans sharing their excitement and theories about the band’s music and lore.

Industry experts are also taking notice. Metal Hammer magazine has already featured ARCTIS in their “Bands to Watch” section, praising their innovative

approach to metal and predicting big things for their future. The magazine’s editor was quoted as saying, “ARCTIS represents a new wave in metal, one that respects the genre’s roots while fearlessly pushing its boundaries. Their ability to blend heavy riffs with intricate storytelling and pop sensibilities makes them a band to watch in the coming years.”

Meanwhile, Kerrang! has described ARCTIS’ sound as “a perfect storm of crushing riffs, soaring melodies, and Nordic mysticism.” The publication went on to say, “In a genre that often struggles to innovate, ARCTIS feels like a breath of fresh, Arctic air. They’re not just making music; they’re creating an entire world for fans to lose themselves in.”

As the release date for their debut album draws nearer, the anticipation continues to build. Fans are eagerly awaiting tour dates and ticket information, with many already planning road trips to catch ARCTIS live. The band’s management has hinted at a series of music video releases in the lead-up to the album drop, each one promising to further expand the rich world of ARCTIS and give fans more pieces of the puzzle to decipher.

The band’s commitment to their craft extends beyond just the music. ARCTIS has announced plans for an immersive live show that will incorporate elements of their mythology, promising concertgoers an experience that goes beyond the typical metal gig. Rumors of elaborate stage designs, cutting-edge visual effects, and even interactive elements have only added to the excitement surrounding their upcoming tour.

In a genre that often struggles to innovate, ARCTIS represents a breath of fresh, Arctic air. Their unique blend of metal, rock, and pop, combined with their rich storytelling and mythological elements, offers something truly new and exciting for metal fans. As they prepare to unleash their music upon the world, one thing is clear: ARCTIS is a force to be reckoned with, and they’re just getting started.

The impact of ARCTIS extends beyond just the music scene. Their emphasis on Nordic mythology and futuristic themes has caught the attention of scholars in fields ranging from folklore studies to futurism. Several universities have expressed interest in using ARCTIS’ work as a case study in modern mythmaking and the intersection of

traditional storytelling with contemporary media.

Environmental groups have also taken notice of the band’s name and thematic elements, seeing an opportunity to raise awareness about Arctic conservation. Discussions are underway for potential collaborations that would see ARCTIS using their platform to highlight important environmental issues, particularly those affecting the Arctic region.

As the release date for their debut album approaches, the music industry is watching closely. Many see ARCTIS as a potential game-changer, a band capable of bridging the gap between metal’s core audience and a broader listenership. If successful, they could open doors for a new wave of metal bands, encouraging experimentation and genre-blending in a way that could revitalize the entire metal scene.

The metal world watches with bated breath as ARCTIS prepares to make their grand entrance. Will they live up to the hype? Can they truly redefine modern metal? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain - the storm is coming, and ARCTIS is at its eye. Prepare yourselves, metal fans. The Arctic winds are about to blow, and they’re bringing with them a sound unlike anything you’ve heard before. The revolution starts now, and its name is ARCTIS.

Vocalist Zahna Joins XOVR Records, Releases New Single ‘Pile of Pills’

Rock vocalist Zahna has announced her signing with XOVR Records, the label owned and operated by Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch. Coinciding with this announcement, Zahna has released a new single titled “Pile of Pills,” marking a significant milestone in her career and setting the stage for her upcoming album.

The song, described by Zahna as a “rebellious rager,” was born out of a challenging period in the artist’s life. “[‘Pile of Pills’] was written when I was in a chaotic state of survival from 20192021,” Zahna explains. “Coming off the heels of an organ failure diagnosis, following a kidney transplant, and then diving into the following years of the

pandemic as an immunocompromised individual, it felt like death was always around the corner.”

Zahna further elaborates on the struggles that inspired the song: “Not only was I fighting the physical aspect of dying, but I had so much financial stress, medical bills, and music industry trauma. My body, heart, and mind, and spirit were just so sick. Anything I did or tried to do just felt like buying time until I had no recourse left, and I never knew when I was going to exit the survival cycle. It truly felt like life circumstances were just squeezing my willpower to live anymore and death was always on my doorstep.”

Despite its intense subject matter, Zahna emphasizes that the song carries

a message of hope. “Years of darkness and hardship can change someone fundamentally, but I am so blessed to have made it out alive despite all of the challenges,” she states. “‘Pile of Pills’ is for anyone just trying to survive. The poverty and chronic illness cycle is absolutely vicious, but please don’t give up, even if it takes years. I’m still healing from those turbulent times, and I hope this track can help you scream your lungs out and release all of the anger, pain, and hopelessness. You will make it out.”

Brian “Head” Welch, founder of XOVR Records, expressed his enthusiasm for signing Zahna. “I am always so mesmerized by a vocalist who has

incredible power, incredible range, melody, tone, and on top of all that, having the strength to be so vulnerable to share such an intense health crisis experience with the world, while still dealing with the raw emotions and trauma from it,” Welch says. “It melts my heart, man. It touches my soul. I am a huge fan of Zahna for many reasons, and I am confident you will be too.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zahna focused on songwriting, collaborating with her husband Patrick Madsen. The couple worked with industry professionals Cory Brunnemann (Through Arteries) and Kellen McGregor (Memphis May Fire) to produce a series of songs that will be released as a full album. This period of intense creativity was fueled by the challenges Zahna had faced, resulting in what she describes as her strongest songs yet.

Zahna’s musical journey is as diverse as it is impressive. It includes an acoustic project called Our Divine Romance, which served as a creative outlet during her college years. She then fronted the band ILIA, contributing to their high-charting Reborn EP. Her solo career took off with her 2018 debut album, which featured the hits “Underneath” and “Drown,” both of which climbed the rock charts.

In addition to her work as an artist, Zahna has been active as a mentor in the music industry, offering vocal lessons, co-writing services, branding advice, and artist development. This aspect of her career became particularly important during the pandemic. “I had always had a heart to help anyone I could in this business, since I know how intimidating it is to navigate obstacles and find trustworthy people to work with,” she explains. Her experience navigating the challenges of the music industry, combined with her personal struggles, has given her a unique perspective to share with emerging artists.

Reflecting on her journey, Zahna shares, “The reality was I was always capable, and I needed to stop waiting around for someone to tell me I was. When the world is in chaos around you, when your physical body is failing you, when people betray you, you simply have no choice but to take control and find out what you’re made of. Whether it was anger, a deep sense of purpose, faith in a higher power, or some wild idea about personal destiny... some survival instincts I never knew I had came to life.”

As Zahna moves forward with XOVR Records, she continues to emphasize the deeper meaning behind her music. “It’s deeper than just music,” she says. “To me, the songs I write are stories, written with purpose and intent. If you dissect them, you’d see that they always lead to some universal truth. I think my purpose and drive is to help others identify that truth, or to inspire them to seek the truth about themselves, or a higher power.”

The release of “Pile of Pills” is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new chapter in Zahna’s career. With a full album on the horizon, fans can look forward to more powerful, emotionally charged music that reflects Zahna’s journey of resilience and selfdiscovery. Her partnership with XOVR Records is expected to provide a platform for her unique voice and perspective, potentially reaching a wider audience than ever before.

As the music industry watches this collaboration unfold, it’s clear that Zahna’s signing with XOVR Records represents more than just a business deal. It’s a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of authentic storytelling in music, and the potential for art to emerge from life’s most challenging moments. With her powerful vocals, deeply personal lyrics, and unwavering determination, Zahna is poised to make a significant impact on the rock music scene in the coming years.

Stryper Announces New Album and 40th Anniversary Tour, Continuing Legacy of Christian Metal

Legendary Christian metal band Stryper is poised to make a triumphant return to the music scene with their highly anticipated twelfth studio album, “When We Were Kings,” set for release on September 13th via Frontiers Music Srl. This announcement comes as the band prepares to embark on their milestone 40th Anniversary Tour, further solidifying their status as pioneers and enduring figures in the Christian hard rock landscape.

“When We Were Kings” promises to be a tour de force, blending Stryper’s iconic sound with contemporary heavy metal elements. The album showcases the band’s remarkable evolution while remaining true to the core elements that have defined their music for four decades. Fans can look forward to a diverse collection of tracks, ranging from hard-hitting anthems like “End of Days” to more nuanced offerings such as the groovy title track and the emotionally charged ballad “Betrayed By Love.”

In advance of the full album release, Stryper has already unveiled two singles that have generated significant buzz among fans and critics alike. “Love’s Symphony” is described by frontman Michael Sweet as the perfect

fusion of their past and present sound, expertly bridging the gap between their classic style and modern rock sensibilities. The second single, “Grateful,” pays homage to their earlier hit “Calling on You,” featuring a catchy pop-rock melody that longtime fans will undoubtedly appreciate. These releases offer a tantalizing glimpse into the musical journey that awaits listeners on the full album.

The current Stryper lineup boasts a powerful combination of veteran talent and fresh energy. Original members Michael Sweet (lead vocals, guitar), Robert Sweet (drums), and Oz Fox (guitar, vocals) are joined by bassist Perry Richardson, who has seamlessly integrated into the band’s dynamic. Michael Sweet, who also took on production duties for the album, expressed his enthusiasm for the new material, stating, “We’re always trying to merge the past with the present. ‘Love’s Symphony’ is a great combination of both. It not only represents who we were but also who we are.”

The band’s 40th Anniversary Tour is set to be a monumental celebration of Stryper’s enduring legacy. Kicking off on September 11th in Greenville, Tennessee, and concluding on November 16th in North Myrtle Beach, South

Carolina, the tour promises to be a comprehensive showcase of the band’s illustrious career. Fans can expect a carefully curated setlist featuring both classic hits and new fan favorites, accompanied by costume changes and an enhanced stage production that befits the occasion. Most cities on the tour will be treated to a two-set “evening with” style show, providing an immersive and unforgettable Stryper experience.

Stryper’s longevity in the oftenfickle world of rock music is a testament to their unwavering dedication, musical prowess, and the enduring appeal of their message. Since their formation in 1983 in Orange County, California, the band has sold over 10 million albums worldwide and achieved multiple Billboard Top 40 hits. Their breakthrough came with the 1986 platinum-selling album “To Hell with the Devil,” which not only garnered mainstream success but also enjoyed heavy rotation on MTV, a rare feat for a Christian band at the time.

Throughout their career, Stryper has faced and overcome numerous challenges, including shifting musical trends and a brief disbandment in the 1990s. However, their 2005 reunion marked the beginning of a new chapter, characterized by a steady stream of new music releases and regular touring. Despite the changes in the musical landscape, the band’s commitment to faith-based lyrics and positive messages has remained constant, even as they’ve skillfully adapted their sound to stay relevant in the ever-evolving metal scene.

The band’s journey hasn’t been without its share of controversy. Their bold approach to combining Christian themes with heavy metal music initially raised eyebrows in both religious and secular circles. However, Stryper’s authenticity and musical talent eventually won over skeptics, allowing them to build a diverse fanbase that transcends traditional boundaries.

In addition to the new album and tour, Stryper is currently working on a Kickstarter-funded documentary film directed by Chris Atkins. This project aims to provide an in-depth look at the band’s four-decade journey in the music industry, offering fans unprecedented access to the stories and experiences that have shaped Stryper’s career. The documentary promises to be a compelling narrative of perseverance, faith, and rock and roll.

Further demonstrating their versatility, Stryper released their first acoustic album in February 2024. This collection features stripped-down versions of classic songs, showcasing the band’s musicianship in a more intimate setting. The album also includes a fresh rendition of the timeless hymn “Amazing Grace,” highlighting Stryper’s ability to bridge traditional Christian music with their signature rock sound.

As Stryper prepares to release “When We Were Kings” and embark on their anniversary tour, they continue to demonstrate their unique ability to balance their Christian message with hard-hitting metal music. The upcoming album and tour serve as both a celebration of their rich legacy and a bold statement that Stryper remains a vital and relevant force in the rock world, four decades after their inception.

The band’s influence extends beyond their music. Stryper has been credited with paving the way for other Christian metal and rock bands, helping to create a more accepting environment for faith-based artists in the mainstream music industry. Their success has inspired countless musicians to pursue their passion for heavy music while staying true to their beliefs.

For fans of Christian metal, melodic hard rock, and music history enthusiasts alike, Stryper’s enduring presence in the music scene is a fascinating case study in longevity and adaptability. Their ability to maintain their core identity while evolving with the times has enabled them to cultivate a multi-generational fanbase, with original supporters now introducing their children and even grandchildren to the band’s music.

As they enter their fifth decade as a band, Stryper shows no signs of slowing down. The enthusiasm surrounding their new album and tour suggests that the demand for their unique brand of melodic metal remains strong. With “When We Were Kings,” Stryper aims to not only satisfy their longtime fans but also attract a new generation of listeners to their music.

The album’s title itself seems to carry a dual meaning – a nostalgic nod to their reign as pioneers of Christian metal, as well as a declaration that they still

possess the power and relevance to claim that royal status in the present day. As they prepare to release this new chapter in their musical saga and hit the road for their anniversary tour, Stryper stands as a testament to the enduring power of conviction, talent, and the timeless appeal of rock and roll infused with purpose.

For those who have followed Stryper’s journey from the beginning, as well as newcomers just discovering their music, the coming months promise to be an exciting time. With powerful new music on the horizon, electrifying live performances planned, and a legacy that continues to grow, Stryper’s 40th anniversary celebration is shaping up to be much more than a look back – it’s a bold step forward into the future of Christian metal.

Snow Patrol’s Evolution: From Indie Beginnings to Global Stardom and Their Triumphant Return with “The Forest Is the Path”

Snow Patrol’s journey from the fringes of the indie music scene to the heights of global rock stardom is a story that spans nearly three decades, filled with creative evolution, personal challenges, and a steadfast commitment to their craft. Emerging from the rich musical tapestry of Northern Ireland and Scotland in the mid-1990s, the band has navigated the ups and downs of the music industry with a tenacity that has endeared them to fans worldwide. Their latest release, The Forest Is the Path, marks not just a continuation of their legacy but a new chapter in their storied career.

The origins of Snow Patrol can be traced back to 1994, when two young musicians, Gary Lightbody and Mark McClelland, met while studying at the University of Dundee in Scotland. Both hailing from Northern Ireland, they found in each other a shared passion for music and began experimenting with

various sounds under different band names, including Shrug and Polar Bear. These early years were marked by a sense of discovery and experimentation as the duo honed their craft, developing the unique blend of alternative rock that would eventually define Snow Patrol’s sound.

In 1997, after adopting the Snow Patrol moniker and enlisting Jonny Quinn as their drummer, the band began to take shape. Their debut album, Songs for Polarbears, released in 1998 on the London-based Jeepster Records, was an ambitious project that showcased the band’s raw potential. While the album received modest acclaim, it was far from a commercial success. Nevertheless, Snow Patrol remained undeterred. They continued to write and perform, gradually building a loyal fan base that would serve as the foundation for their future success.

The early 2000s were a period of growth and transition for Snow Patrol.

After the release of their second album, When It’s All Over We Still Have to Clear Up, in 2001, the band faced a significant setback when they were dropped by their label, Jeepster Records. This blow could have spelled the end for many bands, but for Snow Patrol, it was a catalyst for reinvention. Lightbody, in particular, channeled his frustration into new creative ventures, forming the Reindeer Section, a Scottish supergroup that included members of Mogwai and Belle and Sebastian. Meanwhile, he continued to write new material for Snow Patrol, including a ballad that would become one of their most iconic songs: “Run.”

In 2003, Snow Patrol signed with Fiction Records, a major label that provided the band with the resources they needed to realize their full potential. With the addition of guitarist Nathan Connolly and the guidance of producer Chris Lord-Alge, Snow Patrol entered the studio to record what would become their breakthrough album, Final Straw Released later that year, the album was a critical and commercial triumph, propelled by the success of “Run,” which became a Top 40 hit in the U.K. and catapulted Snow Patrol into the mainstream. Final Straw eventually sold over four million copies worldwide, establishing Snow Patrol as a major force in the rock music scene.

Despite their newfound success, the band faced internal challenges that threatened to derail their momentum. In 2005, founding member Mark McClelland left the band, reducing Snow Patrol to a trio. This period of transition was difficult, but it also opened the door for new members to join the group. Paul Wilson, formerly of Terra Diablo, took over on bass, and Tom Simpson, who had been a touring keyboardist with the band, became a permanent member. With their new lineup in place, Snow Patrol embarked on a European tour with U2, one of the biggest bands in the world. This experience not only honed their live performance skills but also prepared them for the next phase of their career.

The release of Eyes Open in 2006 marked a turning point for Snow Patrol. The album, which featured the international hit single “Chasing Cars,” was a massive success, particularly in the United States, where it went multiplatinum. “Chasing Cars” became a cultural phenomenon, thanks in part to its prominent placement in the TV show Grey’s Anatomy. The song’s emotional resonance and universal appeal helped Snow Patrol achieve something few

British rock bands had managed in the preceding decade: breaking into the upper echelons of the U.S. music charts. Eyes Open became their most successful album to date, solidifying their status as global superstars.

Following the success of Eyes Open, Snow Patrol continued to push the boundaries of their sound. In 2008, they released A Hundred Million Suns, an album that saw a shift in lyrical themes towards more positive and romantic content. This change was a deliberate move by Lightbody, who had previously focused on more introspective and melancholic subjects. The album was another commercial success, reaching number two in the U.K. and breaking into the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 in the United States. The singles “Take Back the City,” “Crack the Shutters,” and “If There’s a Rocket Tie Me to It” were all well-received, further cementing Snow Patrol’s reputation as one of the leading bands of the 2000s.

By the end of the decade, Snow Patrol had established themselves as one of the premier live acts in the world. Their second tour with U2, this time playing in stadiums across Europe and America, was a testament to their growing stature. Rather than immediately returning to the studio after the tour, the band chose to release Up to Now, a compilation album that celebrated their 15-year history. This collection of hits, rarities, and fan favorites served as both a reflection on their journey and a thank you to the fans who had supported them along the way.

However, the years following the release of 2011’s Fallen Empires proved to be challenging for Snow Patrol. Lightbody struggled with writer’s block, a common affliction for artists who have achieved great success. Additionally, the band’s lineup continued to evolve, with longtime member Tom Simpson departing. Despite these challenges, Snow Patrol remained active, with members pursuing side projects and working as songwriters and producers for other artists, including Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and Robbie Williams.

It wasn’t until 2018 that Snow Patrol returned with new material. Their album Wildness, produced by longtime collaborator Jacknife Lee, was a deeply personal project for Lightbody, who had recently achieved sobriety. The album explored themes of primal nature in the modern world, with singles like “Empress” and “Life on Earth” resonating with both longtime fans and new listeners. Wildness marked a return to form for Snow Patrol, reaching the Top Five in the U.K. and reaffirming their place in the rock music landscape.

In 2024, Snow Patrol released The Forest Is the Path, their first album since Wildness Produced by Fraser T. Smith, this new record represents a bold new direction for the band. The lead single, “The Beginning,” hints at a return to the introspective and expansive

sound that first brought them to prominence, while also exploring new sonic territories. The album arrives at a time of significant change for Snow Patrol, with drummer Jonny Quinn and bassist Paul Wilson having recently left the band to pursue other creative opportunities. Despite these departures, the core trio of Lightbody, Connolly, and McDaid remains committed to pushing the boundaries of their music and exploring new creative horizons.

The Forest Is the Path is more than just another album in Snow Patrol’s discography; it is a testament to their resilience and adaptability. Over the years, Snow Patrol has weathered the storms of the music industry, facing lineup changes, creative challenges, and the pressures of maintaining success in an ever-changing landscape. Yet, through it all, they have remained true to their vision, continuously evolving while staying connected to the emotional core that has always been at the heart of their music.

As Snow Patrol embarks on this new chapter, they do so with the confidence of a band that has nothing left to prove, yet everything still to explore. Their journey from the indie clubs of Scotland to the global stage has been one of remarkable perseverance and artistic growth. With The Forest Is the Path, Snow Patrol not only looks back on their storied past but also boldly steps forward into the future, continuing to inspire and resonate with fans around the world.

The album includes hits such as “Hi, Hi, Hi,” “Junior’s Farm,” and “Maybe I’m Amazed,” along with reworked versions of Beatles classics like “Let It Be” and “The Long and Winding Road.” The inclusion of Denny Laine’s rendition of the Moody Blues’ “Go Now” and Paul’s solo piano version of “Baby Face” adds depth to the collection, showcasing the versatility and breadth of the band’s talents. Critics have praised the album for its freewheeling and powerful sound, with publications like MOJO and Uncut lauding the album’s creativity and sound quality. Record

Collector highlighted McCartney’s “ineluctable creativity,” while Classic Pop Magazine described the album as a testament to McCartney’s unbridled energy and musical prowess.

The Biker, The Blues & This Month

The

Blues In Idaho

The blues is international in scope and with its many sub-genres its depth reaches countless millions world wide. In the states it reaches Boise Idaho. Boise is just north of Nevada: go to Jackpot Nevada and go northwest on 84 until you arrive in Boise. The photo on the left depicts the turn out at their annual Boise Music Festival so yes Boise is into the blues big time. There is just something about the blues that keeps calling musicians home. Ask just about any guitar player how they originally made their chops and they will probably tell you that they cut their teeth on the blues. If they are not playing blues full time and you ask them why they moved from it they will probably tell you their answer in one word, money. Nashville is full of guitar pickers and many of them will tell you they favor the blues but country has a much wider audience. That is definitely true but no one ever told the good folks of Idaho that’s the way the cookie crumbles. As you can see they turn out en masse to hear the down to earth roots music. In Boise it even goes a step further too. The blues community heavily supports young people looking to learn the craft and then bust loose on stage. That’s cool. To love something so much, to know how much enjoyment it can bring to musicians and festival goers alike that you stand behind those trying to make their bones. That really is cool. Willie Nelson sings the verse, “The nightlife ain’t no good life but it’s my life” and like a moth driven to a flame both performer and listener find themselves intertwined into one community with the common denominator being the blues. One of Boise’s cool night spots is a place named The Sapphire Room. An upscale listening room that as the saying goes is one of the best kept secrets in America. The place seats up to 170 people and includes a top shelf lighting system, clear sight lines of the stage from any seat in the house and the sound system is excellent. This room draws national touring acts as well as highly coveted regional bands and artists. Then you add the annual Boise Music Festival and Boise has got it working. “The Lucky Losers” out of San Francisco were scheduled to perform at The Sandbar Patio located in The Riverside Hotel. If you have not heard them then the next time they perform near you take it in. Phil and Kathy have been paying their dues from coast to coast for years. No matter where they lay the blues down audiences want them back. They are that good and once again Boise is on top of delivering great blues. Both the Sapphire Room and Sandbar Patio are located inside The Riverside. Quite the place, upscale but not snobby. As a side bar note - I find it rather interesting when I pull up on my scooter and say to the valet please leave it up front. They never quarrel as many of them would rather just see this gem up front than risk dropping it or worse yet having it get away from them. Laster on beyond The Riverside I was sitting in this dive bar and the guy next to me tells me about people from all over the region coming to Boise for ribs. That comment caught me totally off guard and I asked

well where do they go for ribs? He said there are a number of places but my favorite is Good Wood Barbeque. He said you name it and they got it. Pork ribs, Beef ribs, Sausage and Chicken and it’s all good, really good. I asked if he worked there he smiled and said no but their food is good. Well my hunger alarm was going of f so I looked on my phone and located the place. Now what I was not ready for was their complete menu. Yes, it had the standard fare for BBQ and sides but this place went one step further - they offered smoked prime rib. Can you imagine that? I came in for the ribs but I kept going back to the prime rib listing on the menu. A BBQ joint with a prime rib offering, can you even picture that, for some reason I wasn’t thinking it belonged on that menu. Yet when the waiter came back that is exactly what I ordered and let me tell you it wasn’t just good, it was damn good. Overall, people usually don’t know what to think of me. I mean they hear the noise and see the bike when I pull up so who knows what’s on their mind. Kids though are usually all smiles. I have even had parents ask if they can take a photo of their son or daughter beside me and the bike. Kids are so accepting which makes taking the shot special. Then they grow into some kind of who knows what just before they hit their teens and God doesn’t give them back to you until they are twenty one. If I am lying I am dying. Many people notice my plates and ask if I trailer the bike to the destination or do I ride it all the way there. Well I travel on two wheels as nothing beats being free and easy. I am lucky but if you can only get away for a weekend and need to trailer that’s cool. Being up on two wheels is a thrill even if you can only do it when you can do it. No matter how you get there try Boise and allow yourself some time to visit the Boise National Forest. It’s cool. On my second day I woke up at the nondescript No Tell Motel and made my way west on route 184, about a fifteen minute ride. Once you get to the park’s welcome sign there’s a ranger station close by and you just go there and get a map of the forest with its many trails, camping areas etc. While there I noticed that the sky had this crystal clear look to it as if air pollution had not arrived in Idaho. The trees were deep green and the streams were crystal clear. Now there was this one curiosity of mine and that was about bears. Yep the park has them and while I wasn’t too sure what I would do if I saw one, running did come to mind. One time at Yosemite I made it to the top of this one road that ended at a small store. A country store that sold ice cream cones. Locals drive up there and sit at one of the picnic tables and enjoy their cones.

So I arrived by entering into their parking area and all I could see were adults with kids running from the store. Then this middle aged guy with a broom chasing a black bear

The Biker, The Blues & This Month The Blues In Idaho

Bravo to Boise and all of the other over one hundred plus blues societies that belong to the Blues Foundation. Now to close out this month’s article let me share that I noticed on the “Idaho Women Sing the Blues” page that a woman chose a Willie Dixon song and that put me in the mood for Willie’s “Spoonful”. That in turn move me to watch “Cadillac Records”. Finally watching that led me to a single malt scotch and a 50 ring hand rolled cigar. Get this, it’s only 9:08 in the morning - so fire me… I am free baby…

off of the deck area. I had just shut off the bike so I could hear the guy telling folks that it was ok that the bear just comes around to steal ice cream from visitors. Well I knew one thing for sure I wasn’t going to order an ice cream cone. So that was my experience at Yosemite and while the experience was a bit humorous now being in the wild in Idaho with large wild bears well that may not be so funny. I enjoyed the day, met a nice couple while sitting at a picnic table, they were from the Boise area. I asked them if they were going to go somewhere to hear the blues where would they go? They said they enjoyed a place named Watson’s. A friendly place that hosts many of the region’s up and comers as well as established blues players. I went there and right away I was met by an upbeat, friendly waitress. The feel of the place had more personality than most places I had been in over the last six months or so. The lady waiting on me told me that the Boise Blues Society has a band there almost every month but what was even cooler was that she told me about an album that was recorded with the help of the Boise Blues Society named “Idaho Women Sing the Blues”. That seemed like a cool project for someone to take on so I looked it up and yep it’s listed on the Boise Blues Society’s website. Check this out: twenty one women getting the chop credits they deserve. The album was produced and designed by Norman Davis, Don Cunningham and Patrick Reid. It contains twenty one tracks and features traditional blues and blues rock including familiar cover songs as well as originals. By the way the website even lists the band members plus who wrote each song. That’s informative. Boise has got it working. The blues is alive and well there. So many people love the blues but just don’t know it. Unless local communities keep educating young musicians about what the blues sounds like, what it is both historically and culturally then many young people will just think it is something else, maybe another genre. Boise is investing into their youth and music. If you think about it putting an instrument in their hands is better than young people putting a gun in their own hands.
