Homeowner Irked by Insurance Commercial
By Bianca Fortis
For the last few years, Bill Guage had intended sell his Belle Harbor home. Hurricane Sandy, however, put his plans on hold. Located on Beach 130th Street, right on the beach, the home was hit hard by the storm. Now Guage believes that a State Farm commercial is making his house look even worse. The commercial, called “Names” on YouTube, features footage from various storms across the United States – Ike, Andrew, Rita, Ivan and of course Sandy. Guage’s home can be seen from 0:11 to 0:14 in the video clip. The footage of the house looks as though it may have been manipulated: the front of his home looks very dark, as if the front wall had blown out, and the colors of the house are different. The front door appears a dark gray or blue color when in actuality the door is made of mahogany, Guage said. Guage, who never had a policy with State Farm, is perplexed as to why and how footage of his home made it into the commercial. He worries that the image will affect the sale of his home, which is now almost fully renovated. “I’ve had to
explain to people repeatedly that my house wasn’t that bad,” he said. “It’s not good advertising.” Additionally, an American flag can be seen on display on the upper deck of the house. Guage and his wife were among the first homeowners to move back into the neighborhood after the storm, he said. The fact that the flag is flying meant that the footage was taken after they had returned home. Guage pointed to the fact that other homes in Belle Harbor – some just down the block – were in much worse condition than his. “Why not use one of those?” he said. “Why my house? Guage said he has been communicating with a State Farm representative who offered him $2,500 for use of the footage – the “industry standard.” Rachael Risinger, a spokesperson for State Farm said the company is sorry that Guage is upset. “We have made a financial offer to the homeowner for the use of the image or we would be glad to pull the advertisement from airing and remove the footage of his home from the advertisement,” she wrote in an email. “At this point we are still waiting for

a decision and will continue to work with him to reach a satisfactory conclusion.” The company had no comment in regard to the apparent doctoring of the image, however. Guage said it’s possible he’s be-
ing “oversensitive” about the commercial. But he just doesn’t want any more bad luck as he focuses on selling his house and finally making the move. “I’ve been here 40 years,” he said. “I’ve seen enough ocean.”

City Planning To Study Rockaway Park, Rockaway Beach As part of the Resilient Neighborhoods initiative, and the administration’s broader goal of long-term resilience following Hurricane Sandy, the Department of City Planning (DCP) is studying the communities of Rockaway Park and Rockaway Beach. The Department of City Planning is working with Community Board 14, local civic organizations, and local elected officials in these neighborhoods to identify zoning strategies as well as other types of initiatives that would support neighborhood vitality by encouraging residential and commercial uses to become more resilient. DCP will convene a Community Advisory Committee, comprised of community members and civic leaders, who will provide input to shape draft recommendations for the study area. The Committee will convene once every 4 to 8 weeks as needed. The Committee process will conclude next spring when final recommendations are published. The expected outcomes for this Resilient Neighborhood Study area are: an analysis of resiliency options for the variety of building
types within the area; identifying zoning recommendations to support redevelopment of key sites to strengthen commercial corridors; coordination with capital agencies to identify potential infrastructure upgrades; and identifying opportunities to promote coastal resilience and public access on the bay and oceanfront. The study area is bounded by Jamaica Bay to the north, Beach 81st, Beach 79th and Beach 77th Streets to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and Beach 129th Street to the west. As a barrier island, Rockaway faces coastal flood risk from both the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay. The selected study area, as the thinnest point in the peninsula as well as the landing point for major infrastructure connecting Rockaway to the mainland, is particularly critical to the whole peninsula. The extent of the 100-year flood zone within the study area expanded considerably between FEMA’s 1983 Flood Insurance Rate Maps and the 2013 Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps, FEMA’s best available information on flood hazards.
This study will build-off outreach from other efforts, including SIRR and New York Rising programs; provide clear, concrete information to residents on potential strategies for increasing resiliency that are implementable;
shape recommendations based on robust public outreach; and result in the implementation of regulatory changes through ULURP and plans for infrastructure improvements.
Transportation Hearing August 7 Rockaway residents will have an opportunity next month to voice their concerns about inadequate transportation serving the peninsula. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D-Fresh Meadows) along with the New York State Assembly Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions will host a public oversight hearing to address transportation needs throughout Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. The hearing will be held in Manhattan on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 10
a.m. “This hearing will allow the public the opportunity to provide feedback directly to state legislators who have oversight over the MTA and let their concerns be known,” Goldfeder said in a statement. “In today’s difficult economy, our residents and small businesses rely on affordable and accessible transportation to carry out their everyday lives.” Thursday, Aug. 7,10 a.m. 250 Broadway, Room 1923

The High Tide A little of this and that Here’s an idea for City Councilman Eric Ulrich. Hold hearings on traffic agents blanketing neighborhoods. There must be a rationale behind why certain neighborhoods get visited by small armies of ticketwriters. **** Paul’s Bike Shop on Beach 116th is open until 3 p.m on Sundays. pushing hard for the reactivation of the Rockaway Branch Line. The State Comptroller, in a report highlighting the MTA’s future funding challenges, mentioned restoring the line that would greatly improve rail service in Queens and for Rockaway commuters in particular. The option was among many possibilities listed in the report about improving service in the years ahead and was a repeat of the MTA’s own report in October, 2013. Still, it’s a good thing that this needed service is not being dismissed as it had been for years. The Queens Public Transit Committee should feel invigorated. **** The Pot Luck column running this week is another gem by John Sica. It might be too late by the time you pick up The Rockaway Times but the plan was to board the 4:30 afternoon ferry, hold a brief meeting, and enjoy the cruise and a few hours of downtown strolling before getting back on the 7:50 return trip.
**** So there’s a Republican challenger for State Senator Joe Addabbo Jr. His name is Mike Conigliaro. Couldn’t find much out about him but he does have the support of Eric Ulrich: “Mike will make a great State Senator. He’s the real deal and someone who we can count on to deliver real results. I’m proud to endorse him in this race.” Eric was Joe’s challenger in 2012.

I Forgot Forgetfulness loves company. It’s just a real boost to see others forget their keys, their wallet, or even their kids at school. Say what you will, “I forgot” is still a pretty good excuse. In most cases, it’s a better excuse than some elaborate tale – though not always. A cop pulls you over and asks: sir, do you know you were speeding? The answer: I forgot, might not work. But if I were the cop, I’d be sympathetic. One of the more common expressions these days is “I’m losing it.” Nobody remembers anything.
And sometimes there’s inescapable proof. I witnessed a daily double of forgetfulness this week that was, uh, memorable. A car went down my block with a large coffee on the roof. Apparently, the driver put the cup on the roof while searching for the car keys. Whoever it was, got in the car, forgetting the cup was still up there, and drove off. It was a large cup, too, making the car look like a Dunkin Donuts delivery car. One thing for sure, all that caffeine sitting on the roof, wasn’t do-
ing the driver any good. Not two hours later another car passed me with a small cooler on top. I’m guessing it was empty, otherwise, this being Rockaway, a flock of people would have been chasing it. The car turned out of sight, the cooler still on top. Who knows if the cooler made the whole trip. It might still be there for all I know. I once put a watch on top of the roof and drove off. That one I remember. But I wonder how many other things I’ve put on the roof before driving off obliviously. All those things I can never find may have just been on the top of my car. Catholics sometimes pray to St. Anthony for help in finding lost items. I can’t help but picture St. Anthony in his friar’s frock slapping his head every time somebody prays to him after leaving something on top of their car. He’s not helping you find anything if it’s on the Belt Parkway. I’m not sure if St. Anthony helps with lost memories. I know I’m not writing the Gettysburg Address
each week but it seems Boyleing Points is a challenge to the memory, too. The comment I get more than others is: “I read your column this week. I forget what it was but it was funny.” **Boyleing Over: I volunteered to be in a dunk tank for a fundraiser for Arts In Parts, an arts program for kids. Yes, I got wet, though not because of David Selig and Rick Horan who wasted many dollars trying to hit the target to send me into the cold water tank. They whiffed. Suddenly dropping into the cold, kinda skanky water was no day at the beach, so to speak. But the real problem was the water wasn’t deep enough! I’d like to forget the two bruises on my cheeks – and I’m not talking about the ones on my face. ** Here’s a shout out to Rose Murtagh! Thanks for the kind words behind my back! **A special shout out has to go to Kathy and 28 years of marital bliss. I said it was going to be interesting! Happy anniversary! (Hey, I didn’t forget!)

Parking Meter Wrong On 116
Dear Editor: On 7/21 I noticed a few people angry and crying after receiving parking tickets on Beach 116 street. They approached the DOT Officers and you can surmise how that turned out. I did my own little investigation and found out for the past few months Muni-Meter # 410-3005 in front of street address 188 beach 116 street ‘on the median’ the machine is NOT working properly (I tested it myself and spoke to a few people whom had the same complaint). it seems when money is put in ‘Let’s say a quarter for 10 minutes’ the receipt seems to get stuck and you can’t retrieve it (people just walk away and use another muni-meter and except the loss of the quarter and chalk it up to, Life in Rockaway). The problem happens when; ANOTHER person uses the same meter #410-3005 and puts ‘Let’s say 3 quarters for 30 minutes’ guess what happens? The machine spits out the ticket from the previous person whose ticket was stuck in the munimachine (10 minutes). So little do you know, you put the receipt on your dashboard thinking you had 30 minutes, and then when you come back to your car after 10 minutes you have a summons. Bottom line: if anyone has received an ‘Expired time ‘summons and you used Muni-Meter # 4103005 contact DOT with a 311 reference of- C1-1-993663579. With some prayers, there is a chance you will get the summons dismissed or your money back if you paid it already. Steve Bialek

Dear Mr. Feinberg, Thank you for your prompt and thorough response. Market values in Park Slope have been climbing exponentially for the past twelve years, not a recent phenomenon as you suggest. Also, the improvement made to my property you sited and the only one I have made since buying my home nearly ten years ago, is the replacement of the roof which was destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. I am grateful for the city’s vigilance with regard to ensuring that those of us impacted by this natural disaster are not remiss in our civic duty of paying equitable taxes.

I only wish that the same spirit of fairness were imposed on those living in million dollar properties. Did you think that I would be placated by your cogent and well-intended yet dispassionate explanation of this unfair and unethical situation? Taking Issue With Citizen Rick
Dear Editor, I disagree with Rick Horan’s position regarding Beach Channel Drive’s speed camera and traffic lights. School may be in limited session at the nearby schools but Bayside Playground on Beach Channel Drive between Beach 104th St and Seaside Avenue gets plenty of use from local children throughout the year and well into the evening. Unlike Fort Tilden’s soccer fields and baseball fields most of the kids who use the park arrive at Bayside Park by foot and unaccompanied by an adult thus a speeding car can potentially do lots more harm. If I am not mistaken there are speed bumps where kids play in Fort Tilden. Perhaps if not speed cameras and traffic lights then speed bumps on Beach Channel Drive would be a good alternative. The tennis court fence and the Japanese cherry trees on the other side of Beach Channel Drive across from the playground has the dents and scars from where cars crashed into them (mostly very late at night). What would make the neighborhood even safer would be a speed camera near the exit ramp off the Cross Bay Bridge where I am constantly being tailgated by motorists in a hurry to head to points west as they fly by Beach Channel High School. S. O’Connell
Ticket Parade
Dear Editor, Lately the talk of the town has been the abundance of traffic tickets Rockaway residents have received as a result of the unmarked cars placed on Beach Channel Drive. These unmarked cars have now turned into a permanently installed speed camera, which has led many to believe that Rockaway residents are being targeted. One would like to believe that the city is just trying to shape Rockaway residents into safer drivers, but is that really the case? Many believe that the city is de-
liberately targeting residents of the peninsula because, as a whole, we have the means to pay their ridiculous fines. When one needs to run to the store because they forgot some key ingredient for a dinner party they are throwing, they have to worry about the six police officers on the corner of Beach 129th street just waiting to give them a ticket for any number of infractions. Is it necessary to have six officers standing around? Residents are annoyed and want there to be actions taken against this intentional targeting. Laura Tiro
Citizen Rick With Another Traffic Gripe
Dear Editor: In a misguided attempt at improving safety, Waldbaums’ management has erected STOP SIGNS at each of the two exits of their parking on Beach Channel Drive. The STOP SIGN on the eastern exit of the parking lot is not as big a problem as the one controlling the western exit. There, the STOP SIGN is right in front of an existing traffic signal which causes a confusing and potentially dangerous situation. Cars exiting the parking lot at this location are required by law to stop at the red light and go at the green light. Stopping at green lights as the newly installed STOP SIGN commands will cause confusion,
The Rockaway Times delays and possibly even rear-end accidents. This STOP SIGN is a bad idea that will cause more problems it solves. NYPD has confirmed that they will not ticket drivers for going through these unofficial stop signs. If there are no pedestrians on the sidewalk and you have the green light, don’t stop and create a dangerous situation for those behind you. Just proceed through the green light at a reasonable speed, which is a good idea anyway given the ridiculously steep curb cut at that location. Cars do not just exit the parking lot at this light but also enter from BCD, so drivers and pedestrians need to be cautious of each other from all directions, both coming and going. SmarterStreets.org recommends the following reasonable approaches to improving the safety of both pedestrians and drivers at the Waldbaums’ parking lot… 1. Immediately replace the STOP SIGNS with either “CAUTION – SIDEWALK” or “YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS” signs. 2. Erect “ACTIVE DRIVEWAY” signs on sidewalk to warn pedestrians that they are crossing a busy parking lot exit/entrance. Let’s adopt a more common sense approach to problems rather than simply adding more STOP SIGNS, reducing speed limits, adding traffic lights and removing lanes. Rick Horan

Editorial Ask And Demand Answers It’s easy to sound like a one-note complaint machine when griping about the ferry. It’s true that only a few hundred people use the ferry on a daily basis. And to those few hundred, it’s a dream come true. But it’s never been about serving a few hundred people. Fighting for the ferry is important because it underscores Rockaway’s longest running challenge – transportation. We’d like to see elected officials get creative, brainstorm, ask questions, and then demand answers. What if the ferry operated on weekends? City people and tourists seeking a day at the beach, would pay a steep fare. Perhaps it would be a moneymaker that could offset some of the subsidy required for the weekday service. (A weekend ferry does run to Fort Tilden and is often packed. It costs $30 round trip). Joe Hartigan has challenged elected officials – have they ever met or consulted with ferry operators? Have they spoken with other
ferry operators besides Seastreak, the current operator? The subsidy we hear is $30 per passenger. What if the least-traveled run was eliminated? What if the one-way fare were $5? Can the EDC put up some money (some SANDY relief money that’s not theirs?) and the Borough President put up some? If not, why not? Are these questions being asked? And there’s more. Can the ferry be run out of JFK? Are our politicians in contact with the Port Authority and the Mayor’s office about this? Can the ferry be publicized as a pleasure trip for tourists? It’s a barely known service advertised as a commuter option. The free Staten Island ferry draws a huge amount of tourists (inflating their ridership numbers). Would tourists pay for a ride under the Verrazano past Coney Island to Rockaway? We think so – if they knew about the ferry. Some seven months ago, the EDC issued a Request For Proposals from ferry operators. The pro-
posals have never been made public. Why not? Let’s see what was proposed. Perhaps the current service is unsustainable but that doesn’t mean there aren’t options. Until the right questions are asked, until some real options are considered, the fight for the ferry should continue. But the fight has to involve more than active citizens voicing the demand. We’d like our elected officials (that’s ALL our officials) to get to work finding answers and offering the EDC options. They don’t need to join rallies and hold signs. They
should be working behind the scenes. And they should do more than tell us that that’s what they’re doing. Let them produce evidence. Every question we asked above should be answered. We should be able to review their findings – we should not accept something as weak as “it’s too expensive.” If the ferry goes away, there will be one question that should be directed at all the officials elected to serve the people of Rockaway – what have you done to improve transportation to and from Rockaway?

Nicole Frontera: Beautiful Health
Story and Photo By Kathy Louis
It’s not all about Botox. It’s not vanity or a search for the Fountain of Youth. It’s about being healthy and feeling self-confident. That’s what Nicole Frontera Beauty, Rockaway’s first medical spa, has to offer. Open since December in Rockaway Park, the spa provides laser treatments, various skin rejuvenation facials, injectables and dermal fillers, as well as safe non-surgical fat reduction. Nicole addresses the emotional aspect of cosmetic enhancement. It’s about empowerment, she says. A Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specializing in medical aesthetics, Nicole has a master’s Degree in Nursing from Wagner College. She also holds certifications in medical procedures including laser acne treatment, laser vein therapy, laser hair removal, radiofrequency skin tightening and fat reduction, and a broad spectrum of injectable skin rejuvenation products. Having worked in the field for 12 years, most recently for Manhattan-based plastic surgeon Scott Wells, M.D., who is the medical director of her Rockaway establish-
ment, Nicole decided to bring her expertise to the neighborhood she now calls home. “We were displaced after Sandy,” Nicole said, who lives here with her husband, Ryan, and two young sons. “When we came back, I had people come to me for help. They were tired, exhausted and feeling the effects of stress.” Nicole found that she could give people a lift after Sandy. She could help people erase the signs of sleepless nights and uncertainty. It’s clear that Nicole enjoys helping people feel better about themselves. Medical aesthetics is often about correcting debilitating problems such as acne, rosacea, scarring, eczema, skin discoloration or excessive facial hair in women. Although her spa staff includes a massage therapist, Nicole performs all medical procedures herself. She expertly explains each step of every process and fully informs clients about expectations. “People have to be realistic. Many treatments require maintenance or a series of treatments to see results,” Nicole said. “I want people to be happy, not disap-
pointed.” “I have been using Nicole Frontera for my skin care needs for years,” reads one online testimonial. “Nicole refuses to give me treatments that I don’t need. Others upsell people into expensive services. I visited the new store this week and it is fantastic! The staff was wonderful and the décor is NYC chic and very comfortable.” Enter Nicole Frontera Beauty at 104-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard and be instantly greeted by friendly staff and the luring scent of lavender and vanilla. The spa is immaculate. The spotless white décor inspires confidence in the medical aspects of Nicole’s service. Classic decorative touches combine to ensure clients they will be pampered.

Resiliency and Sustainability Describe People, Too For the last 21 months the words “resiliency” and “sustainability” have been the words we’ve heard over and over. They are continually included in every discussion on the rebuilding of our communities here on the Rockaway Peninsula and Broad Channel and all over NYC. We hear that we need to “rebuild sustainably” so that our most accessible resources will last for decades, if not centuries to come. We must also make sure to “rebuild resiliently” to be able to withstand the next knockout blow Mother Nature sends our way. Words such as Resilient and Sustainability are now etched into our vocabulary. Rarely, or perhaps not enough, do we hear these words used to describe each and every one of us! I’m sure, today, if we are asked to describe an individual or a family in one or two words, Sustainable
and/or Resilient may be entirely suitable as the new words of choice! As for me, when I hear the word resilient, two amazing people come to mind, Chris and Sarah Romulo. If you have never heard of Chris and Sarah, you may have seen their faces in ads for CROM Martial training, Boxing and CrossFit. Chris Romulo, a former Muay Thai kick boxing champion and his amazing wife Sarah, a former owner of the highly successful vintage clothing store Sweet Tater in Manhattan, now own and operate their gym on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 92nd Street. Now I know many lost far more the past few years than Chris and Sarah did, but those who have the pleasure to know this amazingly, wonderful couple will agree that they are, by far, one of the most resilient newcomers
the Rockaway peninsula has seen in recent years. Sometimes when you do an online search of “resiliency,” Chris and Sarah’s picture appears next to it! In August of 2011 tropical storm Irene flooded many homes and businesses on our peninsula. Chris and Sarah were not spared, their business was severely damaged by flooding from the ocean. That’s when I first saw their amazing spirit, their willingness to roll up their sleeves and rebuild. And I was worried that they would pack it in and move their business to higher ground or at least dryer land off the peninsula. Boy, was I wrong! I’ll never forget the look on Sarah’s face the day before Sandy hit in October of 2012, She asked me if I thought Sandy would be worse than Irene. My answer was simply “much, much worse.” When Chris and Sarah returned to the peninsula after Sandy and Mother Nature’s hardest punch to our community, they found their gym totally destroyed and their home devastated. To add insult to injury, the new home which they were about to move into was destroyed as well. Yes my friends, a triple whammy!! I thought for sure they would be done, ready to give up and walk away or at least seek higher and dryer ground. Again, was I wrong! They just rolled their sleeves up that much higher and got to work. The most
amazing part of their cleanup was the massive force of volunteers who showed up at their gym and home. There had to be over a hundred people who came to help. Not from an organized group or volunteer organization, just wonderful friends and family and many from the Muay Thai kick boxing community showing what the sport is all about! There were so many volunteers that Chris and Sarah shared them with their neighbors. I noticed one individual who had come to help them who looked so familiar. When I asked Chris who he was, he said, Sean Hinds. I was blown away when Chris said his name. I knew right away who he was. Sean Hinds was a Muay Thai Kickboxing champ as well. Unbelievably, Chris had once won an extremely close fight over Sean a few years earlier and there he was helping Chris and Sarah dig out from the storm! This was by far the greatest display of sportsmanship I’ve ever seen and all Sean Hinds had in his hands was a broom and bucket full of compassion! Twenty one months later Chris and Sarah are in their new home and back in their new gym, stronger than ever, teaching children, teens and adults the truest form of Resilience and Sustainability and of course little bit of the magic of Muay Thai sportsmanship. It doesn’t get much more resilient than that!

BayHouse Is Back In Business

While traveling through Florida and islands down south, Sean Sheridan was struck with inspiration: he could build a temporary tent-like facility in which he could continue to operate the BayHouse, the restaurant he owned and operated for twelve years before it was destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The original BayHouse, which was formerly a candy store, had stood 60 years and survived many storms – but it couldn’t withstand Sandy, Sheridan said. Sheridan had the remnants of the building torn down and replaced it with the tent structure, which he designed and built himself. The structure has allowed the business to operate during the summer season since it first reopened last summer. Some customers really like it, Sheridan said, because it has a “beachy look.” In November the tent will be taken down and construction will begin to rebuild the BayHouse. Sheridan said the restaurant should be reopened by Memorial Day weekend next year. The new building will be similar to the original structure – the same location and size – but will be raised seven feet because of new guidelines. It will be one story, but will feature a seasonal roof deck that will overlook the water. Once it’s rebuilt, the BayHouse will be able to operate year-round,
as it did before Hurricane Sandy struck. Unlike other business owners who say they have had a tough time working with city agencies to move construction along, Sheridan said he has no complaints. “We’re finding that the city is working with us to get us back to normal, and that’s been nice,” he said. Sheridan said that while many of his old customers have now returned, he gets a lot of new ones from Williamsburg and other parts of Brooklyn. “Some of our customers are the young crowd who are checking out the Rockaways, but are also exploring down in Breezy Point,” he said. The BayHouse is open for lunch and dinner and also offers a children’s menu. There is free parking available. The restaurant can also host private events, Sheridan said. Sheridan said he is looking forward to again having regular customers – he expressed his gratitude toward supporters from throughout Rockaway as well as outside the peninsula who have sent their well wishes. He also anticipates meeting new people and invites new customers to come and say hello. “We’re right here sitting on the water,” he said, gesturing to the ocean, just steps from the Bay House. “It doesn’t get much closer than that.”

Seeds Of Success A Farm Grows In Edgemere
Story and Photo By Bianca Fortis
The founders of Edgemere Farm, a community garden, are seeing the fruits of their labor. As part of a task force created to combat obesity within New York City, the administration of former mayor Michael Bloomberg provided access to empty city-owned lots. Last year, Matt Sheehan, a former Brooklyn school teacher, and other stakeholders took over the half-acre lot, located at 385 Beach 45th St., with the goal of turning it into a small farm. Unlike other more traditional community gardens, Edgemere Farm is not a nonprofit. Instead coordinators aim to become completely self-sustaining financially. Any profit will go directly back into the farm, Sheehan explained. The business model of the farm is designed in a way to grow as much produce as possible. Keeping the number of growers to a minimum helps the farm to be more efficient, he said. The project officially began last summer, but the season was primarily spent building out the farm, Sheehan said. Only this year have growers really been able to enjoy a full season.
Currently there are eight individuals growing food on the farm; some of the food is grown for local restaurants. Growers pay dues – 60 cents per square foot – to rent a plot, essentially. Sheehan said Edgemere Farm is a way for individuals to hone basic business and farming skills; the project can serve as a laboratory with which to experiment, he said. “It’s not like you’re going out and buying 10 acres and a tractor to come here,” he said. The farm has fit in well with the local community, which is ethnically diverse. Many neighbors are first generation immigrants who tended crops in their native countries. “For people whose cultures are very close to the land, raising chickens and having a garden is natural to them,” Sheehan said. “In New York it’s ‘The Thing’ – to be at a farm and get your organic eggs. But for some people, this is the way they grew up, it’s part of their culture.” Sheehan said some of the produce the farm grows is directly influenced by neighbors; for example, caliloo is a popular vegetable in the Caribbean, a region
from which many in the Edgemere community hail. Sheehan said the farm has the capability of producing high-value crops that could be sold at trendy farmer’s markets. But that’s not the goal of the farm. Instead, growers prefer to provide crops that are appealing to the immediate community. “We want to be somewhere between the Union Square market and the big box stores,” he said. Besides produce and medicinal herbs, the farm also sells products like honey and eggs. The farm is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during
which visitors can pick produce themselves. They also sometimes host local chefs to create meals for large groups. (Claudette of Cuisine by Claudette on Beach 116th street would be hosting on Thursday, July 31st). Customers come from up and down the peninsula, but the majority live within a 10-mile radius, Sheehan said. The season has been a learning experience for growers who have even bigger goals they will continue to work toward next year. But all in all, the season was a success. “For what we aim to do, we did pretty good,” Sheehan said.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
Those who forget the past are condemned to view it again in the Broad Channel Historical Calendar! Do you have a photo that you think speaks to our way of life here in the Channel? If so, the Broad Channel Historical Society, already hard at work putting together next year’s 2015 Historical Calendar, would like to see it. Deliver the photo to any historical society member along with the year of the photo, the identification of individuals in the picture and the name of the person to be credited for donating the photo to the Historical Society. Also, it is requested that anyone with any knowledge,
memorabilia or photographs of the “Beacon Bar and Restaurant” which was located on W10th Road in Broad Channel back in the 1960’s, contact Barbara Torborg of the Historical Society at 718474-1127. While you’re at it, visit the Historical Society’s website at broadchannelhistoricalsociety. org. Congratulations to the Doherty family of Broad Channel! Joe, his wife Erica and their beautiful daughter Sarah, have received the OK from the “powers that be” to
start long awaited repairs to their home on Noel Road to repair damages sustained with Sandy. The residents of W12thRd in Broad Channel have received word that construction on the new bulkhead at the end of their block will begin in mid to late August as part of the ongoing Broad Channel Tidal Flooding Mitigation Project and that Fern Weinreich, the Community Construction Liaison (CCL) for this project will be relocating her office to 59 West 12th Road in early August. Broad Channel resident Vicki Mahon and her buddy, Erin Nolan, both recent Harbor High School graduates, are currently working as weekend tour guides aboard the U.S. Navy’s decommissioned Amphibious Helicopter Training ship “Baylander” which is presently moored at Pier 5 of the Brooklyn Bridge Park marina. Broad Channel Mardi Gras 2014 continues: Don’t forget - Saturday, August 2nd, Ruffle Bar will host a pool tournament with cash prizes with an accompanying per person entry fee of $20 and later in the month, on Friday, August 8th at 9 pm, a $5 cover will get you in to enjoy the live music of Mr. Big Deal! (Psssst: don’t keep it to yourself but Ruffle Bar now serves frozen drinks!) A “Bing” street mapping vehicle was spotted touring the side
streets of Broad Channel last Sunday for Microsoft’s “StreetView” map service. If you were out and about as the vehicle passed, hope you were smiling! Did you catch the following from last weeks RT’s Boyleing Points column about Broad Channel......”It seems interest in the little gem in Jamaica Bay is getting noticed and that artists and creative types of all kinds are eyeing it because it’s ‘off the grid’ a bit, yet offers so much. It’s got sunrise and sunset views that rival any in the world. Its backyard is the spectacular Jamaica Bay; its side yard is a wildlife sanctuary. The subway ride into the city and other places (like the airport) is another bonus. More people are starting to ask what Pete Mahon says in his weekly column in the RT..”.. wait for it...., Broad Channel – Why would anyone want to live anywhere else? See y’all next week. Reap What You Sow Last week I mentioned that there could be discussion about introducing five more perpendicular jetties, or groins as John Cori pointed out in his column last week. Keep in mind that the purpose of these is to trap the sand and be the barrier against storm surge and potential destruction. This is a necessary measure and should be discussed in the many civic and community based meetings. But one of the unfortunate elements of having this type of infrastructure is that we still invite massive waves to break on our doorstep from hurricanes and nor’easters. And then we just have to sit and pray that not too much erosion occurs. A topic which I have introduced previously, and should also be
looked at again, is artificial barrier reefs, that deaden the onslaught of wave action and leave the interior coastline largely untouched. Perfect evidence of this are the atolls that surround many of the islands in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Massive waves constantly batter these islands and yet they have these pristine lagoons and coastline. In some areas of the world, such as Hilo in Hawaii as local surfing legend Liam Greeney, pointed out to me, they introduced a breakwall because of the many tsunamis that tended to focus their energy directly into that harbor. The plus side of that break-wall was it also generated a surfing wave off the tip of it that is considered as a profit center. They got their ROI (Return On Investment).
“Cables,” near Cottesloe Beach in West Australia, was born in 1998 while another reef was added on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, near Narrowneck, in 1999. While neither reef is man’s answer to Pipeline, both Cables and Narrowneck have reeled perfectly since their creation. But not all artificial reefs are a success. Pratte’s Reef in Los Angeles never worked. In an article in Surfline Dr. Jose Borrero said “The simple fact is that reef type projects have never been given a fair chance in terms of budgets or expectations relative to ‘traditional’ coastal engineering projects. Pratte’s Reef was doomed for failure before it entered the water.” Artificial reefs are not a foreign concept in New York either. Reefs
have been deployed since as early as the 1920’s. All well and good I hear you say, but who is going to pay for it? Not my tax dollars! First of all, as Liam also pointed out to me, a lot of the resources we have right here at our disposal, such as the debris from the boardwalk concrete demolition. Let’s use it constructively! (pun intended). Then there is also the other concept I introduced at the Ideas event in the MoMA tent, get corporate funding for naming rights of each reef. As we know surfing introduces money into communities, each reef can have it’s own ROI model and we all win. (see photo) Please send your ideas to tubularviews@gmail.com or comment online at rockawaytimes.com

Times They Are A Changing Back in the ‘70’s when I worked in Sneaker Corner on Avenue I and Nostrand me and my friend Bobby Bruns used to have a trick that we would do to make our coworkers feel good. Around 2:30 in the afternoon in the crowded store I would yell out across the room to Bob, “Bob what time is it?” Bob would say, “I don’t know, I think it’s around noon.” Invariably one of our coworkers would correct him, “No its 2:30”. Bob would say, “Wow today is flying by.” And believe me, everyone would feel that the day was flying by. It was psychological, but it worked. Why am I telling you this, and what does this have to do with Rockaway you may ask? Well this is the time of the summer where you hear every day from one person or another, “Oh man, I can’t believe the summer’s flying by.” Or, “the summer’s almost over.” People, there are still four glorious weeks left. Thirty one long days and nights. So to apply some Sneaker Corner logic to it, “Bob, what’s todays date?” “I think its August 26th.” “No it’s only August 1st.” “Wow the summers moving along so slow, there is so much time left.” Time is a strange concept. As most people who know me realize, I am semi-retired and don’t work that often. Until recently. I just got a job that will take me through December, perhaps until April. Not only that, this week, my first week I worked 82 hours. So when this weekend came I was not going to waste a minute. Free time has become very valuable to me all of a sudden. Starting Friday night, I saw three bands in three different bars, kayaked, did some stand up paddle board, body surfed, filmed a short film, biked, took an hour nap, won a dart game, watched parts of two Yankee games, moved a carpet for my brother, and received the following message on Facebook on Sunday morning from an unnamed female friend. “Hey Johnny, great night! Did you happen to see anything of mine at your house? Phone, wallet, clothes, etc.” It’s actually more innocent than it sounds. My wife and I had a good laugh over it. Having lived in Rockaway for almost thirty years, you can take some things for granted. Over a year ago a friend moved to Rockaway from New Jersey, Theo Sharkey. Theo saw Rockaway from a fresh perspective. He stared out at Jamai-
ca Bay and said that is where I want to be. He brought two kayaks and goes out on the bay every chance he gets. My friends and I took notice and we have purchased six more kayaks and stand up paddle boards. We call ourselves the Aquatic Alliance, or AA. With no boardwalk to get around on, we have taken to the seas to go bar hoping, the Wharf, Bungalow Bar, and Thai Rock. What a pleasure rowing around the bay on a quiet night or for a brilliant sunset. Every summer I throw a party and I have to name the party. Last year, the first summer after Sandy, I named it Embrace The Chaos, or the ETC Festival. I thought that name captured the spirit of Rockaway perfectly. We Rockaway residents were thrown into chaos and we certainly embraced it. We didn’t run away, we faced our adversity head on, and we still are in many ways. What would a party be without a poster and matching t-shirt? I enlisted local artist Mike O’Leary to come up with a design that portrayed the Embrace The Chaos theme and he did an outstanding job. T This year’s party is called Things Have Changed, or the THC Jamboree. Once again I think the name fits Rockaway in the summer of 2014 perfectly. Everywhere you look in Rockaway the saying applies. I talk to fishermen who tell me they are seeing fish they never saw in Rockaway. Surfers are telling me that the waves have changed. There has been a sandbar since the start of the season. The afternoon winds seem more prevalent than ever. Ever since I came up with that name I can’t help but hearing people say “things have changed.” Now that you have read this column watch how much you hear it in the coming weeks. I got the line from a Bob Dylan song of the same name, Things Have Changed. In it he says “I used to care but things have changed.” That may sound cynical but I look at it like this: I used to care about meaningless things but things have changed. Like when we had to throw out so much of our personal belongings post Sandy we realized that maybe all the stuff we were holding onto was not so important after all. As you can see I have too much free time on my hands. Oh no, I forgot I have an 82 hour a week job now. Things Have Changed!

Tip On Tipping Here’s a tip. I have always been a big believer in that if a service is being done for you, you should reward that service with an appropriate gratuity. Should it matter where you are on the socio-economic scale of wealth? Somewhat, but not really. By no means am I a wealthy man. And in the dead of winter I am extremely un-wealthy. For guys like me, we rely on those tips to make the ends meet, but this column is not only about guys like me. It is a well known fact that bartenders are well taken care of by the majority of patrons, especially from locals in this area. We won’t talk about what non-locals tip, just kidding, yes we will. Take, for example, your average Verizon cable guy. These guys are spending hours in your house wiring your lines. They are extremely well paid for their duties, but who am I to not at least buy them lunch. I’d feel awful about myself. You drop your laundry off on 116th, it comes back warm, folded and comfy. I certainly don’t want to do it, and no matter what I do, it never comes out of the dryer the way it does when I have it done for me. How dare I not throw $3-5 to the girl folding my ripped boxers that look like a gerbil got to them? You know the times you took a cab off the peninsula and they charged you for tolls, even though they have the E-Zpass. You can’t prove it, but why is it that I always felt like I was getting robbed by them? Even still, they always got an extra $5-20 for getting me to my destination, based on distance and content of conversation. Maybe it’s the passiveness in me that makes me think a local hack wouldn’t boldly lie to my face on a consistent basis about that EZpass thing. My pizza/sushi/Chinese/Thai/ sandwich delivery guy gets a $520 bill depending on weather, size of order, distance and if he is appreciative of my business. Most of them are certainly thankful for the generosity.
Furniture stores are notorious for charging a delivery fee, to assemble your new and disassemble your old. It’s not cheap. But I know that doesn’t go to the guys humping up the stairs with a 100-200 pound item. What possesses me to throw the guys coffee money? I’m never going to see them again in my life. Why bother, right? But I do. Finally, as you can probably tell, I’m no foodie snob and do not expect much when it comes to service when dining out. What I do expect is my order to be taken in a timely manner and I’d like to see general interest from my server. Nothing irks me more than when I see a server on their cell phone. But at the end of the day, I don’t really send a message to them that they are horrible at their job when they just get the standard 20 percent gratuity. Great service is rewarded with 30-40 percent tip. Beefchip, why so generous? I’m really not, I just call it doing the right thing. I’m no hero and do not try to be, but if I can make someone’s day better by letting them know I appreciate what they have done for me, then I can lay my head down at night and sleep soundly knowing I did the right thing. I have seen some wealthy people stiff servers in my day, maybe that’s how they retain their wealth. Good for them but I don’t know how they get a good night’s rest. For me, I know how good it makes me feel when I’m rewarded for good service and it motivates me to keep my game sharp. Being a Thousandaire sometimes presents its challenges. But if “you do unto others” at the very least, karma and the gods are in your favor. So the message this week at Beefchip is you should always tip, even when you think they deserve a reduced gratuity for bad service. Like my Uncle Biggie Smalls always said, “Spread Love” it’s the Rocka Way. I’m looking at you Williamsburg!

Life Rolls On
I was excited to volunteer when I heard that the Life Rolls On Foundation was partnering with Wheeling Forward, in a “They Will Surf Again” event this past Sunday in Rockaway. “They Will Surf Again” gives adults and children with disabilities the opportunity to surf the ocean. Teams of volunteers get in the water with the surfers and support them in riding the waves. The event was filled with courage and inspiration. Every surfer had a story. By the end of the day, the muscle I had pulled while helping a surfer ride in, was irrelevant. Imagine not having the ability to move from your neck down, and trusting a group of complete strangers to put you on a surf board and get you safely through the ocean waves. Words cannot capture the essence of this surfer’s determination, bravery and faith. Children came to surf the waves of Rockaway. There was one little boy kicking and screaming. What struck me most was how calm, patient and loving his mom was. I imagine it would have been easier for her to take him home or not bring him at all, but she was willing to do whatever it took to give her son the experience of surfing. I like to think that the waters of Rockaway brought a sense of healing to this
small spirited child. There was a teen with his service dog. His dad told me that his son had been talking about surfing for weeks. He surfed his first run accompanied by our team leader. When I asked him if he wanted to go solo after that, his only concern was steering the surf board. His dog patiently waited as he surfed and was there to greet him when he got out of the water. I don’t know who was prouder, his dad or his dog. I was stationed in the shallow water to help the surfers as they came ashore. There were other volunteers responsible for ensuring that the surfers rode safely through the waves. Our team leader got on the back of the surf board with many of the surfers, so that they could have the “surf experience”. His was an impressive demonstration of physical strength and fortitude. This was a day I will carry forward with me as my life rolls on. As I walk along the shore, I look out onto the ocean with a new perspective. Inspiration comes in many forms, and on this summer day in Rockaway, it rolled in on a surf board. For more information, go to liferollson.org and www.wheelingforward.org. Civics Corner By Noreen Ellis
Rockaway Civic
Getting Beach Flix Was Like A Movie In my first civic corner article I did not get a real opportunity to provide detailed information on one of our major projects we have done for the past three years. ROCKAWAY CIVIC BEACH FLIX, which in case you have not heard, is our free summer movies series with movies shown at various locations in Rockaway. See the schedule here or on our website www. BeachFlix.com. You would think by now – being our third year of Beach Flix – that it gets easier. WE WISH IT WERE THE CASE! Free for the attendees is not free for us. Producing Beach Flix is a balancing act. The time is the easy part. It’s the movie selection, dates, permits, film licensing, locations and sponsorships. As
any association or organization knows fundraising is that unbearable necessary task. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every business who has or is a Beach Flix supporter. Without our sponsors, Beach Flix could not happen. This year, even with many repeat sponsors as well as some new sponsors making their commitment to Beach Flix, we were still short of the funds required for a full season which would have meant fewer films in our lineup. Naive me – thinking I will write or call to the variety of companies making serious dollars off of the Boardwalk reconstruction – this is a no brainer, here are companies making millions, they can afford a few shekels
to fund this community project. Not to mention the marketing angle, tax deduction or community goodwill aspects. Well, note to self … think again next time and have Plan B ready. Then one morning in late June I receive an email …. “Your email request for help with the beach films was forwarded to me. I think we can help. What number can I reach you at?” Long story short, NYC & Company Foundation – the official marketing company for NYC tourism – said that they would be the major sponsor for Beach Flix 2014. I still have not found out how my request ended up with NYC & Company but, whomever is responsible, Rockaway Civic thanks you greatly. For the businesses who had already made a commitment, they agreed to generously donate gift certificates, products, etc for us to raffle at our movie events. The money raised from these raffles will help to fund other community projects. I would also strongly encourage you to patronize these businesses. We are reaching the halfway mark with this year’s movie lineup, we hope that you can join us for a film or three. On a separate note, Rockaway Civic is also committed to supporting local issues. With the ferry being one of those issues, our board has decided we will give 5
ferry tickets to any new member of Rockaway Civic between now and September 8, 2014. Alas, we not forget those who have already shown their support by joining our association, we will be contacting you about your ferry tickets too! You can obtain a membership application at www.RockawayCivic.com or email admin@RockawayCivic.com with your request.

“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have. Make the NOW the primary focus of your life.” “We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable. It would be wise to use that time adoring our families, cherishing our friends and living our lives.” Maya Angelou “You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.” Henry David Thoreau Summer - the time we all look forward to every year, Rockaway Time, seems to pass so quickly. Even though the days are longer and we have more leisure time to enjoy our beautiful surroundings, there still may be a sense of looking forward to what one has to do or what has to be planned or whatever. Imagine being in the moment of whatever you are doing. When you are chopping an onion, washing your hair, walking on the beach towards the shore – just be there now. It sounds like a revolutionary idea, even in our paradise. But somehow our lives have evolved to living one step ahead of the now, thereby creating an endless cycle of striving for

whatever is next. “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” John Lennon Being in the moment takes mindful practice but it can easily soon become your way of living. When we concentrate on it, time seems to slow down. Time is time so it really doesn’t but by mindfully doing something, we begin to see, smell, hear things we never have before. How does this affect us? We are enriched by the moments in our lives just by being in the awareness of these moments. And enrichment in this way increases our happiness. Being in the moment can also enrich your work life. Focusing in on the person in front of you or the meeting agenda or whatever and not being distracted by anything else makes you feel better and more productive. Perhaps before you know it, a steady pace develops and your workdays are happier. I utilized this “be in the moment” attitude in a stressful corporate environment with much personal success and have maintained this practice in my current work life. One step further. In my yoga studies, I came across ‘maitri’ which is a Sanskrit word meaning benevolence, friendliness. It has come to mean “unconditional friendliness to oneself”. So, imagine yourself doing something with complete mindfulness and awareness, i.e., being in the moment, and then feeling a sort of loving-kindness towards yourself - softening and being kind to yourself. Take note of how you really feel. Then, do it more often and more often and more often. Negative emotions start peeling away. Our hearts feel lighter, enlightened. Imagine the heart center as a lotus flower and a precious jewel: beauty, liberation and enlightenment. Focus on fostering the qualities of generosity, harmonious conduct, endurance, enthusiasm, concentration and insight. Some are easier than others; depends on who we are and what we have going on in our lives. All of these things are possible if we stop, sit quietly, center and notice the breath streaming in and out. Be Happy. It’s time.

The Fishing Report By Matt Whalen
Ahoy Rockaway! Another summer weekend has passed with some “sketchy” weather for fishing. Saturday was rain on and off, and great storms were predicted for Sunday. These storms never really developed until early Monday morning but, they did threaten us all day, many anglers stayed in safe port. Beach 9th St. to east of the Atlantic Beach bridge: Bernie Matzen made it out fishing for a short while in his boat and went for some Fluke. Bernie was frustrated at all the short fluke as well as the weather NOT cooperating so he decided to call it a day after only a few hours with no fish. Pauly T. has also had it with the short fluke on the south shore and is now transitioning his boat to go back on the fluke attack in Jamaica
Bay. Paul re-launches next weekend. Paul is excited (as are we) because, that’s where he does his BEST fishing ! Jamaica bay/ Rockaway beach: We called in to “Tom’s Wave service station/bait and tackle” on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park, and we spoke to “Mike”. Mike reports that the fluke are still doing well in Jamaica bay. A mixed bag of porgies are also roaming the bay and off the sea wall. The only surf report so far is that the king fish are back in the surf, a few striped bass are around but nobody catching them is saying exactly “where”. Mike also commented on the unusually high number of (harmless) sand sharks being reported. ‘till next time.
