Waiting Is the Hardest Part

We live in a society with an understood social order. When we leave the house each day, there are certain things we assume we will encounter throughout our day and other things that we just don’t expect to come across. This is New York though, and “social order” can be a looser term around here than in other places. More and more, we see situations where that social order is completely thrown out the window and chaos, its replacement, fills the void.

These days, when taking the subway, for example, most people are prepared for the worst. It is likely that you will

come across a fellow citizen, living in the same society, and yet they do not abide by the same social contract as yourself. Other places in our lives, we expect that order to be maintained. When we go to a doctor’s office, as another example, being on the lookout for social order disrupters is not usually top of mind. Well, maybe it should be… Going to the doctor’s office is not something that gets people excited. You are usually there for an unpleasant reason and, more times than not, you feel like crap. When the decision is made to go to a doctor, you give them a call and make an appointment. Every-

one has busy lives, including doctors. You understand that. It’s not convenient, but you make do when they give you two 15-minute windows to choose from two weeks from now. Wednesday at 1:30? Sure, I’ll clear my schedule.

The day comes and you arrive 15 minutes early. “Maybe they’ll be able to fit me in quick!” You check in with the front desk. “Why don’t you have a seat, and the doctor will be right with you.” If you’re lucky you’ll also get, “And while you wait, please complete these forms.” 20 pages to fill out requesting information that they already have and/or will never use.

Quickly, your 15 minutes early turns to 15 minutes late. You look around and notice that there are a lot of people who were here before you. Did they just get here super early too? Or are their appointments before yours. 15 minutes turn to 30 and before you know it, your 1:30 appointment time has you in a waiting room till 2:30. Just when your brain is about to explode, a nurse pops her head in and calls your name and pairs it with a smile that cuts your blood pressure in half. That must be a job pre-requisite. “Exam room 3, please.”

As you sit on the table that’s too big for a seven-footer, you realize you’ve been duped. This isn’t just an exam room, this is the secondary waiting room! You can only play with the ear/eye examination tool thingy (technical term) and the blood pressure machine for so long.

The doctor arrives and you are in and out of there in 15 minutes. Your multi-hour doctor’s office visit is finally over.

Why is this acceptable behavior? It shouldn’t be. It is not acceptable from the other way around. If you have an appointment and call to tell them that you’re so sorry but you are going to be an hour and a half late, they are probably going to tell you to reschedule. Which makes sense! I understand that things happen, and appointments run long, but how have we not come up with a better system? Inform people that they should not show up on time because they will not be seen on time. Don’t let people believe everything is on schedule. This kind of behavior is airline adjacent, and we all know how I feel about the current state of air travel…

FRIDAY JUNE 9TH

Rockstock Returns June 24

Put it on the calendar! The 17th Annual Rockstock & Barrels Festival is coming up on Saturday, June 24, and it’s going to be one for the books.

2PM HARRY & CO.

630PM DAVID KELLAN 930PM DJ SEAN OHARA

In addition to the already fun live music, boardwalk vendors, skate contest and surf contest, there are some awesome additions this year at the annual festival presented by St. James, Boarders and Into the Whip Records. NY nonprofit Surf For All is bringing in A Walk on Water, a California-based nonprofit that uses surf therapy to help special needs kids. During the festival, they’ll be sharing a one-hour expression session, showcasing their surf therapy.

Speaking of surf, the Eastern Surfing Association and Skudin Surf are hosting the surf contest this year and the purse is already at $5,000 and growing. The skate contest is shaping up to be another great one and this year, there will be a

free skate clinic in the morning to teach kids who want to learn, how to skateboard.

Walker Hornung is once again curating the music and he’s got a lineup of young, energetic bands with original music taking the stage on Beach 90th all day long. Plus those who keep the party going and head to the afterparty at the Beach 97th concession at 6 p.m. are in for a special treat as local band Indaculture reunites for the first time since 2019. There will even be an afterparty to the afterparty, with the fun continuing at Connolly’s with DJ Brother Rich spinning tunes.

Rockstock, on Saturday, June 24, is held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from the skate park to the boardwalk to the ocean on Beach 90th Street. There’s still time for vendors to sign up, sponsorships and more. For more info, see: Rockstocknyc. com

Living in one of the largest cities in the world, most people are not expecting the cleanest air, but this is ridiculous. A few days that looked like they were going to be beautiful this week have been marred by a thick layer of smoky haze from raging Canadian wildfires up north. The poor air quality is affecting much of the Northeast and has NYC officials urging those with respiratory issues to stay indoors. It even led to Wednesday’s Rockaway Beach Volleyball League games being scrapped. *****

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Michael Costa. Mike was a retired firefighter for Engine 328 who succumbed to 9/11 related illness on June 3.

Tuesday, June 6, not only marked the 79th anniversary of D-Day, but

also the 30th anniversary of the Golden Venture. Many from Rockaway will never forget when the infamous ship, smuggling nearly 300 Chinese immigrants into the United States, ran aground off of Fort Tilden.

*****

Congratulations to our friend Eric Peterson of NYC Parks, who was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Brooklyn by Bishop Robert Brennan on May 27. Eric will serve his parish of Most Holy Trinity-St. Mary Parish in Brooklyn. Rockaway local Michael Pearce, who was also ordained a deacon with Eric, will serve right here at St. Camillus-St. Virgilius. Congratulations and best wishes to both Eric and Michael! *****

Remember when Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters raised funds to stop the homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street? Even though the shelter opened, word on the street is that litigation is underway. After delays due to Covid, court proceedings against DHS and operator Black Veterans for Social Justice are allegedly taking place this week. Stay tuned for more.

Rockaway is getting trendy! The Rockaway Hotel was on Page Six of the New York Post last week as celebrities Kate Bosworth and Justin Long secretly married there in early May after they attended an event at the hotel. They fell in love with the place and decided to get married right there the next day.

This Sunday, June 11 is the 43rd annual Buckley’s – Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run. If you don’t have it in you to participate in the run, stop by the post-run Family Fun Day Picnic. It’s always a great day! Register at: www. heartchare.org/event/buckleysrun/

Look Dad, you made it! Want to put a nice picture of Dad in the newspaper? Send your photo to mail@rockawaytimes.com and we’ll do our best to put it in next week for Father’s Day.

NYC Parks and Joann Ariola are hosting “Movies Under the Stars” on Tuesday, June 13 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., screening “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” at Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway.

Councilwoman Ariola is also hosting a Street Co-Naming Ceremony in honor of Lew M. Simon on Sunday, June 11 at 11 a.m. on the southeast corner of Beach 116th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

The Rockaway Republican Club is holding its Flag Day fundraiser at Jameson's on Beach 129th Street on Wednesday, June 14 at 7 p.m. The meeting will feature a handful of notable speakers. There will also be a red, white and blue best-dressed contest and voter registration drive focusing on young adults coming home from college.

On Saturday, June 10 at 7 p.m., Active Pickleball and Tennis Center will be hosting a pickleball fundraiser for Alzheimer's care, support, and research at Queens College Tennis located at 150-35 Reeves Avenue in Flushing. The event is organized by DJ Mugsy (aka Adam Funtleyder) and honors his father, Elliot Funtleyder, who passed away from Alzheimer's last year.

Even though the sun wasn’t shining, Irish eyes were still smiling all weekend at Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21’s 10th Annual Rockaway/Breezy Point Irish Festival.

On June 3 and 4, all who went to St. Camillus had a grand ol’ time celebrating Irish culture. The weekend included live performances by Night Visitors, Breezy Point Pipes and Drums, The McClean Avenue Band, Celtic Cross and The Gobshites on Saturday

A Weekend of Irish Culture

and The Brooklyn Bards, the O’Malley Irish Step Dancers, The Canny Brothers, The Narrowbacks and Big Night Out (formerly Fool’s Night Out) on Sunday. Drinks were pouring, plenty of food options were available, vendors sold Irish goods and there was plenty of activity for the kids with Rochelle Grubb doing face painting, bouncy houses and more. Robbie Salmon and Bill Gehlhaus kept adults and kids entertained by getting dunked in the dunk tank that helped the AOH raise funds for charity.

Celebrating Irish culture and raising money to give back to Rockaway’s charitable organizations are why AOH Division 21 holds the festival year after year. “Thank you, everyone, for coming out and supporting this festival. The weather wasn’t the best, but you guys showed that you’re true troopers and, as always, we do this to raise funds for various charities here on the Rockaway peninsula,” Festival Chairman John Moroney said, before the drawing of the big 50/50 winner, who went home with a $25,000

prize, plus 10 other $1,000 prize winners.

Mark Edwards, president of AOH Div. 21 said, “I want to thank every one of you for coming out and supporting us. By supporting us, you support your community.” He urged any young male to consider joining the organization so to continue the good work they do. If interested, head to their next meeting at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Monday, June 19 at 7 p.m., or contact Edwards at: irisheds64@aol.com or at 646-6622393.

When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all.

It’s officially boating season! On Saturday, June 3, the United Inter Yacht Clubs Association (UIYCA) and The Wharf held the annual Blessing of the Fleet to send local ships sailing safely this summer.

Hundreds of boats from nine yacht clubs around the Jamaica Bay area passed by The Wharf late Saturday morning, where UIYCA Commander Hugh Holling -

The Boats are Blessed

sworth and members of the U.S. Coast Guard gave a salute, while Rev. Joel Youngblood of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Queens and Deacon Chris Wagner of St. Bernard Church in Brooklyn said blessings over each vessel.

The participating clubs included North Channel Yacht Club, Riley’s Yacht Club, Howard Beach Motor Boat Club, Old Mill Yacht Club, Midget Squadron Yacht Club, Diamond Point Yacht Club, Padagate Yacht Club, Hudson River Yacht Club and the Brook-

lyn Yacht Club. The FDNY also brought out not one, but two, fireboats that sprayed their water cannons as the boats passed by for their blessings.

UIYCA Commander Hollingsworth said it’s all about bringing boaters together. “The whole purpose of our organization is to bring the yacht clubs in the Jamaica Bay area all together and as part of that, we do this blessing every year,” he said.

Joan Brew, whose late husband Richie Brew had served as

a commander for more than 15 years, said, “It’s a beautiful thing to see everyone get together and share in a nice thing—blessing the boats for a good boating season.”

“I always look forward to this event because it kind of sets the tone for the season, making sure everyone’s using their boats safely, but also having a little extra guardian angel with them,” Deacon Wagner, a boater himself, said. “Everyone always seems to look forward to today.”

RAA’s New Exhibit Illuminates the Magic of ‘School’s Out For Summer’

“School’s Out For Summer. School’s Out Forever…” The Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) new visual art exhibit kicking off next Saturday, June 17, at Fort Tilden’s T-7 gallery, borrows its name from the title of shock-rock musician, Alice Cooper’s 1972 hit song—celebrating the sweet abandonment summertime brings for the peninsula’s students looking forward to closing their textbooks and soaking up a carefree summer. However, for the exhibit’s curator, RAA board member Christopher Saucedo, the multi-medium art show, on display all summer until Labor Day, gives a bird’s-eye view of what hard work invested in the classroom could reap for a blossoming generation of artists he both taught and mentored. From painting, drawing, sculpture and photography—each piece, contributed by flourishing artists across the country, co-presented by the National Park Service and funded by Councilwoman Joann Ariola’s office—invokes the magic of when “school’s out for summer.”

Chris Saucedo, a south Brooklyn native and Belle Harbor resident, has made art his vocation for the past 33 years. He taught at the University of New Orleans for 20 years, eventually serving as chair and research professor in the latter end of his tenure, before moving to Adelphi University in Long Island, where he is currently a professor of art and art history. Saucedo’s artwork has been internationally recognized and exhibited in several cities, including NYC’s World Trade Center Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art and across the pond in Galway, Ireland. However, though possessing such an impressive curriculum vitae, Saucedo describes himself as a dreamer.

“I’ve always been a dreamer,” he shared. “I started art school in the 1970s, even though everyone said it was impossible to think of art as a vocation. However, my mother said, ‘Life is short, do what you

love. Your father died when he was 40. What are you gonna wait for?’ And these were not college-educated people. So, I was obstinate and went to art school, and of course, I loved it. Even though frankly, I probably had a lot of classmates, who were perhaps more talented than me. They just didn't have the desire. And so, I stuck with it.”

As for his attraction to Rockaway, it began in his youth, when he and his brothers would ride their bikes from their neighborhood in Marine Park, Brooklyn across the bridge. “I used to ride my bike here as a boy across the bridge to the beach and bay at Fort Tilden. We’d ride over with our fishing poles, no idea what we were doing. All we knew is that we were down for the day, before heading back home to Brooklyn for dinner,” he said.

Saucedo didn’t predict that he would teach at the University of Orleans for 20 years, leave after he and his family lost their home in Hurricane Katrina, come to Rockaway, and experience losing, then rebuilding their home all over again with Hurricane Sandy. However, like he said, he’s always been a dreamer.

As for his passion to impart his love for art to the next generation, he said, “With 33 years of being a professor of visual art, I have one foot in the art world and one foot in the academic world. I've got this lineage of these amazing students, who are now all over the country. And for this upcoming art exhibit,

I called them to see if they wanted to participate. Why? Because there is this magical place called Fort Tilden, in this magical place called Rockaway, which comes to life in the summer. Today, many of my former students have professorships in New Orleans, Colorado, Kentucky, all over the country.  So, to have 35 of my former students, who I have kept in touch with over the years, exhibiting their work in various art forms here at the RAA, is a dream within itself,” Saucedo said.

Though some of his students achieved their academic degrees more than three decades ago, Saucedo said he continues to delight in their individual aesthetic voices and takes great personal resolve in the privilege it has been to learn and grow alongside each of them.

For example, the image that at initial glance looks like two bicycles riding in opposite directions, is titled, “Pushmi-Pullyu.” Set to classical piano sonata music, this is a 2013 collaborative video art project by artists, Tony Campbell and Matt Vis of Generic Art Solutions. The riders face away from each other and appear to be pedaling in opposite directions, however, which direction is the tandem bicycle really going?

Another example is from another of Saucedo’s students, Boris Zaki’s oil-on-canvas, “Bauhaus Emoji” (2005/2019). Painted well before today’s emoji-mania,

Zaki synthesized German painter, sculptor and designer, Oskar Schlemmer's “Man” (1920s) and American commercial artist, Harvey Ball’s “Smiley” (1960s), into this bouncy little roundel. According to Zaki, by adding his own touch of brush-and-stroke, he hoped “to inject some happiness into the ‘seriousness’ of Bauhaus’ series of shortcomings.” He quipped further, “I thought about the blue/orange color schematic, aromatic of a Juicy-Fruit gum, perhaps, would be just the ingredient to lighten the debate.”

Saucedo said he first became involved with the RAA in 2016. “When I moved to the community, I was invited to do an exhibition called, ‘Flood Brothers’ at the Fort Tilden gallery for the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy.”

As for past grievances about the RAA, Saucedo is optimistic. “New York City is one of the art capitals of the world, and for the RAA to be a part of that fabric is special. Art should never be self-serving, and nonprofits don’t work unless you give, you can’t just take. And the RAA has such a beautiful history of sharing and fostering creativity in the community. We are working on starting back programs and hope to build back the momentum that was started years ago,” Saucedo said.

Alice Cooper’s song continues, “No more pencils, no more books. No more teacher's dirty looks. Out for summer. Out 'til fall.” However, unlike the line, “We might not come back at all,” Saucedo’s students are definitely coming back to share their love for art with Rockaway.

The opening reception for RAA’s Exhibit, “School’s Out For Summer. School’s Out Forever…” is happening on Saturday, June 17, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fort Tilden’s T-7 Gallery. The gallery will be open to the public every weekend (and also by appointment) until Sunday, September 3, Saturdays and Sundays, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, including directions, visit: RockawayArtistsAlliance.org

P.S. 114 Returns to the Stage with Matilda Jr.

After being put on pause due to Covid, P.S./M.S. 114Q’s theater program came roaring back in rebellion with “Matilda Jr. The Musical.”

On June 1 and June 2, the curtains opened at The Belle Harbor School and parents, siblings, friends and staff were

blown away by the talent that radiated from the stage. The performance was made possible through a grant obtained by Councilwoman Joann Ariola to invite Inside Broadway to help the school’s theater program bring the magic of Matilda Jr. to life.

“I am honored to be able to

fund programs in our schools that allow our children to show off their abilities and shine!”

Councilwoman Ariola said on social media after seeing the opening performance on Thursday.

At Friday’s performance, P.S. 114 Principal Elizabeth Welsome shared some more good news. “We want to thank Councilwoman Joann Ariola, who provided the grant for Inside Broadway. We are really excited because she has already told us that we are getting the grant again next year!” she said to applause from the audience.

Saratoga Race Track VIP at the Rail Package with optional day at Baseball hall of Fame or 2nd day at track general admission.

Package includes: 3 nights and 4 days at downtown Holiday Inn, (walking distance to main street & track) 3 full breakfasts, Coach

With Lav, Lake George Steamboat Dinner Cruise, Full day VIP At the Rail Package at the track including full lunch & dessert in air conditioned floor to ceiling windows and walk out patio to the finish line. Optional day (price included) for a trip to Cooperstown Baseball Hall of fame or Another day at the track with general admission. $1,295.00 per person based on a double. Must have 25 to run.

Andrew Winans, who helped the students put the performance together through Inside Broadway, thanked Ms. Welsome for making it possible, as well as musical director Ginger Bennett, stage manager Gina Machado and the school’s PTA that showed its support from the start. “I really hope you enjoy all of the hard work we put in and I think you’re going to be really proud of the kids,” Winans said before the curtains rose for the final performance.

Proud was an understatement as each student nailed their respective parts. From the ensemble that sang and danced from the beginning, to Valentina Primarti captivating the audience as the show’s star, Matilda. The voice of Jordan Greenberg, who played Miss Honey, left the au -

dience roaring with applause, including claps from fellow students on stage. Gabriella Musoff nailed the intimidating aspects of Ms. Trunchbull with her acting skills. Michael Zurheide and Lily Costa, who played Matilda’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, sparked laughs with their bigger-than-life personalities. The mostly female cast adapted well to male character roles, such as Millie Balfe taking on the charismatic role of a student named Nigel, and Jordana Landberg, who had the job of bringing Bruce alive, as she powered through pretending to eat a massive chocolate cake as one of Ms. Trunchbull’s punishments on the kids. And impressively, they all did it with a British accent, taking on British author Roald Dahl’s original work reflecting some of his own traumatizing experiences at boarding school. The students did a wonderful job of bringing it all together, while even finding creative ways to create the magic of the play, showcasing Matilda’s superpowers that help to take down Ms. Trunchbull and bring harmony back to the school under Miss Honey.

Matilda Jr. was the perfect show for The Belle Harbor School theater program’s return, restoring harmony to a great program that will continue into the future, thanks to funding from Councilwoman Ariola.

SUMMER EFFECTS

LOCALS ONLY

Periodically, some out-oftown brokers try to get a foothold in our Rockaway community. Some of them are small outfits and some of them are larger outfits with recognizable names. This is not a new phenomenon in our area and has always been UNSUCESSFUL!

The summer season has mixed effects on the Rockaway real estate market. On the one hand, we are a beachfront community and the draw of the summer activities does bring people here for: beaches, swimming, cycling, running, surfing, organized teams for kids and adults (although the pandemic may crimp some of these this year; thankfully the “end” is in sight). On the other hand, some sellers are reluctant to sell during the summer because they enjoy the aforementioned activities and don’t want to give them up so fast!

Why? The experienced local brokers have tremendous advantages over the interlopers. The good, intelligent local brokers know the history of almost every house – not just the sale records which are available on the internet. They know houses which have been on the market before and have been unsuccessful -

It can be harder to sell real estate during the summer due to vacations by buyers and sellers alike. Summer activities can also occupy people instead of allowing them to focus on the home sale process.

The spring season has been generally good for our real estate market. There has been action across the board in all price categories with an emphasis on the range below $1 million (approx). Prices have firmed up within the framework of recent comparable sales and in some cases are creeping higher. Inventory levels remain very low. Call me, Love, Robin. 718-490-9463

ly marketed – and they know WHY the old listings were unsuccessful (perhaps inspection problems, for example). They know who made offers on houses and why offers were turned down. They know all the local “players” – the investors, the families thinking about upsizing, or downsizing, or expanding for maturing children. Further, they know the parameters and specific desires/needs of these local players.

The Rockaway real estate market is very difficult to break into. A book can be written about the failed attempts to break into it. Call me. Love, Robin.

A local golf course charges $35 per person for a round of golf. They currently send foursomes out every 10 minutes from 7am till 3 pm. (last tee time is 2:50). Since play is slow, they are considering sending foursomes out every 15 minutes from 7am till 3pm.

How much income would they lose if they make this switch?

SLICE OF LIFE

Beach Etiquette

I should have had this column last week, but I was quite busy with the fabulous Memorial Day Weekend weather and missed my deadline! And I am sure with beach closures and ferry visitors, space will be a hot commodity.

Here is my annual beach etiquette column and it is for all of our new residents and our visitors that were pouring off of the ferry last week. One loyal reader a few years ago said Kevin should place my column as one of the photos on the boardwalk, and I forgot to tell my new bosses! And these rules are not

just for the actual beach, but the peninsula in general.

Rule 1: When you get to the beach and there is a lot of space, please do not sit directly on top of people already at the beach. I never understand why someone who has never seen me or met me before wants to sit so close to me. Don’t you want your own space as well?

1b: This also goes to setting up a huge crew directly in front of someone. Many times, the residents know that the tide will be coming in as the day goes on and you sitting directly in front of them is both

blocking their view and now creates a problem when you have to move when the tide comes up the beach. I truly think this rule will be broken as the beaches close to the ferry are so small from boardwalk to shore and many beaches are closed.

Rule 2: I love music. Our group often has a radio on the beach. However, when your music is so loud that the entire beach cannot even hear their conversation, that is rude.

2b: This noise rule also applies to vulgar language. Rockaway is a family-oriented beach, so please respect that families with children are surrounding you.

Rule 3: Clean up after yourself. This was said in Robert Fulghum’s book "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" One of the things he listed 25 years ago was: clean up your own mess. This is not beach etiquette; it is etiquette in general. This is especially true for Beach Channel Drive around the ferry. Please do not clean out your beach bag onto Beach Channel Drive. Also, if you know your teenagers are heading to the beach (day

or night), send them with a garbage bag.

Rule 4: Dress appropriately. Shirts and pants are not optional. I do not want to see your butt cheeks, ladies! Please understand that I am not against non-residents of Rockaway enjoying our beaches, and our local establishments, I just think that if they knew the rules, it would be a bit better. I have a few more rules and they will be out next week. Have a great week everyone. Of course, if I missed a rule, let me know so I can include it in next week’s column: email me at mrshanning308@ gmail.com. P.S. Thank you for all of your support since I have returned. Have a great weekend!

The Heart Chakra

June is the height of heart season, which is why our focus at Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio this month is Anahata, or the Heart Chakra. Have you ever heard of the chakras? In today’s article, we will briefly learn what chakras are, why they matter, and we will specifically dive into Anahata.

Just as the universe is made of spinning wheels of energy (picture the Milky Way Galaxy), we, too, manifest from 12 wheel-like energy centers called chakras. Chakras are energy hubs in and around the physical body that link to specific areas of consciousness and directly affect our physical, emotional, and mental states. When the chakras are balanced and functioning properly,

we experience clarity, flow, and expansion in our lives and are equipped to handle difficulties, should they arise, with calm and grace.

The chakra system, or energetic body, is the foundation of our being. By understanding the chakras, we can trace any symptoms (physical, mental, or emotional) back to specific energy centers, which can, in turn, inform and encourage our healing process. For example, if I am experiencing issues with the organs of elimination, feelings of not belonging, insecurities, and/ or mental resistance, I know that I have to work with Muladhara, or the Root Chakra. In this case, I would do grounding activities, such as walking barefoot on the Earth and gardening. I would choose movement that helps me to connect with my physical body, such as yoga, Pilates, or dance. I would incorporate root vegetables into my diet, and

I would wear and surround myself with deep reds, browns, and burnt oranges.

Anahata, or the Heart Chakra, is the fourth chakra and it is located in the center of the chest. Its corresponding color is green, its seed sound is “yam,” and its symbol looks like a flower with 12 petals and two overlapping triangles (one right side up and one inverted) in the center to represent the dualities of like and dislike.

I understand Anahata to be the place in the body where Heaven meets Earth. It is a sacred room in our temple (body). Visiting the chapel of the heart by simply placing our attention in that part of the body reminds us that there is only one of us here and we are it. All of the people, animals, plants– all of nature– are one in the same.

Working with the Heart Chakra helps us to find kindness, compassion, understanding, and empathy for ourselves and others. The awareness that we are all one reminds the mind that there is nothing we lack. We are abundant by nature, and everything we need is attainable. Centered in the heart, we become

more generous, patient, and gentle. We realize that what we do to others, we do to ourselves, and what we do to ourselves, we do to others. The interconnection is unbreakable.

Some signs of an imbalanced Heart Chakra include loneliness, feeling unlovable, depression, fear of intimacy, jealousy, selfishness, possessiveness, clinging, smothering, codependency, being judgmental, and defensiveness. If you experience any of these symptoms, I invite you to place your attention in the space of your heart and meditate with the following mantra: “I am whole and I am healed. I am abundant.” You can also wear and surround yourself with the color green, eat green foods, practice heart opening yoga poses, spend time in nature, chant the seed sound “yam,” use heart opening crystals (like jade, emerald, or amazonite), use heart opening essential oils (like rose, jasmine, or lavender), and/or listen to 528 hz.

We invite you to join Helen Kilgallen at Ocean Bliss Yoga this Sunday, June 11 at 11 a.m. for a Restorative Yoga Workshop with Essential Oils. Sign up at oceanblissyoga.net

DON’T LEAVE THEM BEHIND

It’s hurricane season again. Most of us remember all too vividly the havoc that Super Storm Sandy (otherwise known as she who shall not be named) wreaked on us. We were warned that she was coming. We were told it was going to be the mother of all storms. Many of us prepared as best we could for her arrival. Some of us evacuated. But many of us remembered all the other countless warnings we had been given in the past that added up to big nothings

and threw caution to the wind. However you handled the oncoming onslaught, I’m guessing it wasn’t enough because most of us in Breezy and Rockaway were forced to leave our homes for several months and in some cases, years in the aftermath of that witch, Sandy. In hindsight, there really wasn’t anything we could do to protect our homes from the historic storm surge. But what about our pets?

Because we live on the coast, it is important to have a plan in

place for our pets in the event of a storm like “she who shall not be named,” because, in my opinion, it’s not if it happens again, it is when.

So, what should we do? Well, for one thing, know which evacuation shelters and hotels are pet friendly. Make arrangements with friends or family members who live inland well in advance, so that they, and you, are on the same page about allowing you and your pets to evacuate to

them in an emergency. Make sure that your pet has proper identification, tags, and microchips in case you become separated. Prepare an emergency kit of food, water, medication and veterinary records. Also, have a leash, carrier, bedding, and any other items you might need. But do not evacuate and leave them behind thinking you can come back and get them. The reality is that you might not be able to get back home right away, or worse, your home might be destroyed.

It is crucial to prioritize your safety and the safety of your family during a hurricane evacuation. Your family includes your pets. They depend on you. By having a plan in place, and including your pets in your plans, you can ensure a safe outcome.

Horseshoe Crabs Arrive in Jamaica Bay

Society and its partners (JBRPC, NYC Audubon, and NPS) organized a festival in support of this natural event. Over 100 people came, and many brought along their children, who were in awe of this ‘living’ dinosaur. Actually the ‘crabs’ date way back in the fossil records, before the dinosaurs emerged. Also, they are not really crabs but more closely related to arachnids (spiders and scorpions).

During the last few weeks, the prehistoric horseshoe crabs have been coming ashore in Jamaica Bay to lay eggs at the high tide area – as they’ve apparently done for over 300 million years (give or take a millennium or two). To greet them, the American Littoral

These scary-looking but harmless animals are a very important part of the ecology of the bay as the billions of eggs they lay around the shorelines provide food for fish and other marine life, as well as thousands of shorebirds that are migrating through the city this time of year. One bird in particular, the endangered Red Knot, flies non-stop from Brazil each spring to reach its nesting grounds in the northern tundra. Jamaica Bay (and especially much larger Delaware Bay) are impor-

tant stopover sites for them to ‘refuel’ on the eggs and regain the body fat needed to continue the long journey north.

The horseshoe crab is also used in medicine as its copper-based bluish blood contains an element that clots when exposed to minute

traces of bacteria. This is refined in the lab and used to test the purity of vaccines and blood transfusions. So, for their ecological and medicinal values the horseshoe crab deserves our respect and protection. May they live long and prosper!

Mary Alice Donaghy

Mary Alice Donaghy (nee Farley), 80, of Apopka, Florida, peacefully passed away on May 27, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.

Mary was pre-deceased by her parents Margaret and John Farley. Mary was born in the South Bronx, New York, and attended Cathedral High School in New York City.

Mary had a career in hospitality, working in restaurants and shops, where she found joy interacting with people, sharing her appreciation for good company, good food, and good music.

Mary devoted her life to caring and guiding her family and extended community of friends. Everyone who encountered her was touched by her sweetness, deep sense of faith, and delight in the grand and the everyday. A conversation with Mary left one feeling heard and having been kindly counseled by a very wise woman. Her own challenges and achievements in life helped inform her gentle being, sense of humor and sage advice.

Mary married Joseph Anthony Donaghy at St. Lukes in the Bronx, NY and had six children, Joseph (Hortencia), Kevin (Missy), Sean (Leslie), David (Denice), Maureen (Colin), and Virginia.

Mary and Joseph proudly raised their family in Rockaway Beach, New York (still with a little sand in their shoes), and then in Altamonte Springs, Florida (Go Gators).

Mary was pre-deceased by her ex-husband, Joseph Donaghy. She is survived by her siblings John, Thomas, and Theresa Farley, her six children, 13 grandchildren (Guy, Joseph, Heather Mary, Mary Catherine (Tyler), Scott, Rachel, Morgan (Odhran), Chase, Casey, Jackson, Cailin, Ciorsdan, and Ava,) two great grandsons (Liam and Luca) and her sweet dog Sarge.

Mary also leaves behind dozens of beloved nieces, nephews, and their children who adored her, as well as legacy of family friends and their children. It’s said that Nan Mary, as she was known to all, was grandmother to not only her 15 grand and great grandchildren, but dozens of others who grew up blessed by her kindness and care within her community.

A funeral mass was held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at Annunciation Catholic Church, 1020 Montgomery Road, Altamonte Springs, Florida 32714.

Ask the DOC Sugar is Sweet

Prediabetes is an intermediate stage of blood sugar elevation that may precede type II diabetes. It affected approximately 720 million people worldwide in 2021 and is estimated to affect 1 billion by 2045. In the U.S., about 10% of those with prediabetes will progress to outright diabetes each year. The diagnostic criteria used to define prediabetes differs slightly depending on various agencies or associations setting the criteria. These criteria include the fasting glucose level, impaired glucose tolerance, and the glycosylated hemoglobin A1c. As a test for the initial diagnosis of diabetes or prediabetes, HbA1c has the advantage of conveni-

ence (no fasting required) compared to fasting glucose level or glucose tolerance test. However, HbA1c may be unreliable as a measure of time-averaged blood glucose levels under certain conditions such as hemolytic anemia, iron deficiency anemia, hemoglobinopathies, pregnancy, and uremia. Moreover, ethnic differences in HbA1c, independent of blood glucose levels, have been reported. Studies have shown that for given levels of blood glucose, black individuals will have higher levels of HbA1c than white individuals. The reasons for this discrepancy are unknown.

The American Diabetes Association

(ADA) defines prediabetes as a fasting glucose of 100 to 125, glucose tolerance test results of 140 to 199, or a HbA1c level of 5.7% to 6.4%. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening adults aged 35 to 70 who are overweight or obese for prediabetes every three years. The ADA recommends universal screening for adults aged 35 and over every three years regardless of risk factors. In a large study of the U.S. population, fasting glucose levels identified 28.3% of individuals as having prediabetes, as compared to 21.7% for HbA1c, and 13.3% for a glucose tolerance test. Because of the instability of prediabetic states (false positives are not uncommon), most guidelines call for at least two, if not three, separate tests before confirming the diagnosis. Once an individual has been diagnosed as having prediabetes, annual monitoring is recommended. The major predictive factors for prediabetes include overweight or obesity (defined by the WHO as a BMI or 25.0 to 29.9 for overweight and >30 for obese), older age, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and genetic predisposition.

A national survey of U.S. adults aged

18 and over conducted between 2017 and 2020 showed a prediabetes prevalence of 38% in the overall population. Given the fact that obesity rates in the U.S. are climbing, especially among children and adolescents, this rate is expected to rise. Once the treatment of prediabetes has begun, the goal, of course, is the prevention of conversion into outright diabetes type II. The primary treatment is lifestyle modification, which includes weight loss, changing to a healthier diet (i.e., Mediterranean diet), and the institution of an exercise program, all of which should be in conjunction with the knowledge and consent, if not advice, of your healthcare provider. Some studies have shown benefit from the early initiation of treatment with metformin, however metformin alone is not nearly as effective as lifestyle improvement.

When one considers that diabetes is associated with major cardiovascular events, kidney failure, blindness, and premature death, a diagnosis of prediabetes should be a loud wake up call to start living healthier. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Lady Dolphins Dominate Lacrosse Championship

Way to go Lady Dolphins Lacrosse! On Sunday, June 4, the Beach Channel Educational Campus Girls’ Lacrosse Team was named PSAL Champions for the 2023 season.

After a successful undefeated regular season and a 7-6 playoff win against Stuyvesant in the semi-finals, the Dolphins advanced to the finals, facing off against Bayside High School at the field at Curtis High School in Staten Island for the championship game on Sunday. Coach Katie McGoldrick says it was a nailbiter, with the Dolphins taking the lead before Bayside tied it up twice, but it all turned around at the end. “About the last 10 minutes, we managed to pull ahead by two,” Coach McGoldrick said. With a final score of 10-8, the Dolphins declared victory and were named Public School Athletic League Champions for Girls Lacrosse.

The championship win was a team effort with junior Angelina LoBianco scoring four goals, an effort she put up all season, scoring 71 goals in the regular season, making her the highest scoring player in all of PSAL Girls Lacrosse. In the championship, freshman Kahmiya Patnett put in three goals. Senior Britney Viera Garcia scored two and freshman Angeline Serrano scored one. And the season couldn’t have been successful without the work of the rest of the team, and especially their new goalie, Anaya Watler. “It was her first year playing goalie and she had 118 saves throughout the season,” Coach McGoldrick said.

This championship win was especially meaningful as the Beach Channel team hadn’t won since 2010. Last year was a near miss after the team made it to semi-finals with Coach McGoldrick coaching the team for the first year. “For everyone that was on the team last year, this year, to make it there again, and further to the championship, was really exciting, and for everyone new, it was great to watch them grow as a team and

WANT TO GET IN TOUCH?

players,” she said. “Anyone who hadn’t played last year hadn’t played before, so for so many girls to start at that spot a few months ago and go all the way to the end and win the championship, it’s really amazing.”

Achieving success was a group effort that McGoldrick says the girls nurtured with a support system. “They’re an amazing group. They were so supportive and helpful to one another in the process of learning the game and no one blamed anyone for their lack of experience. It was just really nice to see what each girl could bring to the table and supporting that skill,” McGoldrick said.

And the Lady Dolphins say they couldn’t have done it without McGoldrick at the helm. “Our coach is the most supportive and charismatic person we have ever met,” one player said. “McGoldrick brought Aryana and I onto the team and when we told her we were winning the chip, she had full faith in our team,” another said.

Will they pull it off again next year? Although losing eight graduating seniors, with a good group of underclassmen and hopefully some new additions

next year, McGoldrick says, “I’m optimistic.”

WWE & AEW News!

What's going on, Wrestle Talk Fans?! Welcome to another week of pro wrestling news. So much to talk about, so let's dive right in!

Congrats to the new WWE Women's Tag Team Champions Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler! They won the title in a fatal four-way match on the May 29, 2023 episode of WWE RAW. This makes me very happy, as I am a big fan of both of them. I hope that the WWE keeps this

storyline going, as both Ronda and Shayna are an excellent tag team and will bring more credibility to the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships.

For quite a while now, I have been hearing rumors on and off that All Elite Wrestling (AEW) should bring back the L.A.X. Faction. During its last run, it had Santana, Ortiz, Konnan and Dismante as its members. The original members were Homicide and Hernandez. Fans of the legendary L.A.X. would definitely love to see it happen as

the faction was legendary. The minute you heard their theme song, fans jumped out of their seats.

So, it’s official. AEW will debut their new television show "Collision" on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The debut show will finally feature the return of CM Punk. Other stars scheduled to appear on the show are Samoa Joe, The House Black, Thunder Rosa and FTR. I, for one, am very excited for the return of CM Punk, and I can't wait to see how his story develops.

AEW has recently announced that their August 27, 2023 "All In" show, that is scheduled to take place at the Wembley Stadium in London, has already sold over 65,000 tickets! Factor in that they haven't yet announced an official card of matches, that alone is amazing news! This will be AEW's debut in the United Kingdom, and the stadium still has roughly over 7,000 tickets left to be sold. At this rate, the show is on its way to selling out.

The question of the week comes from Carlos H. in Rockaway Park, and he said, “I recently saw a video on YouTube regarding wardrobe malfunctions that have happened in the WWE. Do the fans watching live on TV see these malfunctions when they happen?" Good question, Carlos, and the answer is yes, they do. Now, most wrestling promotions that televise live shows have a five second delay between the actual live action at the show and what you see on television. This gives the production staff time to edit out any potential issues, such as a wardrobe malfunction. But there are plenty of times that the production team are not able to censor an issue immediately, and of course, it is viewed by the TV audience. It’s not perfect, but it's one of the challenges that hosting a live TV show brings. Thanks for the question!

If you have any questions or comments, please send them to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
