I have been working as a freelance writer for the better part of two years now. I got my start back in 2012 working under Stan Fischler, one of hockey’s most treasured personalities. The National Park Service (NPS) will provide an update on the project status for the West Pond Environmental Assessment from 6-8 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. Parks Commish Visits Community Board He said he had “good news” though it didn’t include much about the boardwalk or about the extra $200 million FEMA is allegedly reimbursing Parks as part of the boardwalk rebuild. Still, New York City Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver delivered a presentation which drew praise as he came before the Community Board at the Bayswater Jewish Center in Far Rockaway on Tuesday night. Silver gave a citywide overview of Parks’ project and missions and said he’d be visiting every community board in the city. The Community Board 14 stop was his first, he said. Silver went on to say that the current administration is on its way to creating a “21st century park system that is fair throughout the entire city.” Silver continued by explaining that he has created a new division in his department that would take a data driven approach to understanding the health of the city’s park system. “I’m trying to communicate to staff how we want to move toward an era of caring for parks,” he continued. “We don’t want to “maintain” our parks. We want to care for

them.” This, of course, is no easy task, as New York City boasts 29,000 acres of parkland and over 17,000 parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities. Many of these parks were already in a state of neglect before being damaged further by Hurricane Sandy. It becomes increasingly difficult when one considers that the city has to plan these parks while keeping in mind different generations who want different things. “Parks need to embrace the entire neighborhood,” the commissioner stated. “We’re looking to create a bright green future with more of an inclusive and innovative park system. That is our goal going forward.” Additionally, the Commissioner brought the room up to speed on The Rockaway Conceptual Plan, which aims to develop a blueprint for a comprehensive park system in The Rockaways. Some of the items in the plan are funded and underway while others remain on hold. Several members of the Community Board complimented Silver’s 70-minute presentation as well-thought out and informative. Yet, in the follow up Q&A session,

those in attendance at the Community Board Meeting made it clear to Parks Commissioner Silver and his staff that the time for talk is over and it is on him and his staff to put their (or the taxpayer’s) money where their mouth is. The slow progress of the city’s

reconstruction of the parks after Hurricane Sandy has frustrated residents who have understandably grown tired of politicians asking for patience in rebuilding efforts. When Silver and Queens Park Continued on page 10

Artist Colony To Grow On West End?

A former medical office building will now be a space for a different type of healing. A Minnesota artist, Rifé, has brought her dreams to Rockaway and is hoping to rent out studios to fellow artists at a building on the corner of the beach block on Beach 120th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Rifé, originally of New Mexico, and living in Minnesota for the past decade, is a relatively new painter who decided to come to New York City to focus on her passion. Formerly a jeweler and a music booker, Rifé began painting two years ago. “Art was my hobby. It was something I aspired to do, but didn’t have the time to do. Then I started to work on a 20-foot mural and it was like a tidal wave hit me. Everything in my life shifted immediately. I was so happy when I started making art and I haven’t stopped,” she said. She visited New York City over the summer, and when asked where the best beach was, she was directed to Fort Tilden, where she returned several times. “When I went back to Minnesota, I decided that being a painter and wanting to paint big, logistically meant I had to be in New York,” Rifé said. She

returned to New York on December 20, and upon realizing the city might be a bit too big, she turned to Rockaway. Within 15 minutes of arriving, she stumbled across the medical building, which has been vacant for two years. Even though the sign said medical offices for rent, Rifé took a chance and called the number. Owner, Eddie Ré, was open to the idea of the space being used for art and with each room having its own windows and sinks, Rifé found the space to be perfect for artists. They made a deal. Even though the building won’t be used for medical offices, Rifé says she’s bringing another type of medicine to the space that she’s calling the Beach 120 Medical Artists Building. “When you make things, you feel better. When you look at your art, or something someone else made, you feel better or you feel less alone because you find people that have similar interests. All of those things are very healing,” she said. Food For Thought The problem with a diet is all the time you suddenly have on your hands. You can’t go out to eat. So what do you do for those hours? I mean, when you’re in an eat, drink, and be happy mode, the hours of the day take care of themselves. Usually, you and a partner spend half an hour deciding where to go. Where do you want to go? I don’t know, where do you want to go? I don’t know, what are you in the mood for? You think we’ll need reservations? Want to ask so-and-so if they want to go? Well, we can’t go to that place, so-and-so doesn’t eat that kind of food. And so on. Quick digression here. Some food discussion among married people reaches absurd levels. A man in the middle of breakfast or just finishing his morning coffee gets asked, what do you want for dinner? (A thought bubble forms over his head: I don’t know what the hell I want, I’m eating breakfast). A smart man does not let the words out of the bubble. He shrugs and hopes the dinner question can be shelved until at least lunch time. I don’t know if it’s a gender thing. I do know getting asked what you want for your next meal while chewing on your present one is not, uhm, appetizing. Plus, you need to kill hours in the day. If you discuss dinner at breakfast, what do you do for the rest of the day? See, what I mean? The most overlooked thing in the diet world, is killing time. Besides hunger pangs, the real challenge of diet is the massive time void that opens up. What

do you do if your life revolves around eating? When you’re sticking to a January resolution you spend those fours thinking about how you can’t go out and why the month you choose to starve has 31 days. Thinking about food, preparing it, and talking about it takes up half the day. For some people it’s more than half: they go on Facebook where they see people putting up pictures of food they just cooked. We all know the diet industry is a gazillion dollar industry. If you want to make a fortune just figure out something for people to do for those hours usually reserved for food. And don’t hand me any crap about filling the time with exercise. Exercise is done primarily so you can eat more. Boyleing Over: With holidays over it’s probably safe to bring up those holiday cards with pictures of kids and families that are so popular these days. It’s nice and all to see the kids and how they’ve grown. Somehow you parents got the little runts to dress nicely and smile. Well done. But what am I supposed to do with that card after a couple of weeks? I’m not supposed to keep it, am I? But it’s a little strange just chucking those smiling faces into the garbage. And I gotta say, I’m not the most careful recycler. It was a little creepy passing by the garbage to see a smiling family half hidden by some mashed potatoes or some other food remnants. I’m guessing a couple of people just crossed me off next year’s list.

Schumer To Fed: Gateway First Senator Chuck Schumer has urged the Department of Interior (DOI) to provide funding in their fiscal year 2016 budget for several critical projects in New York’s Gateway National Recreation Area, including the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Riis Beach and Fort Tilden, and Floyd Bennett Field. In 2014, the National Park Service (NPS) released its General Management Plan (GMP) for Gateway, which helps park managers focus on what is most important in carrying out a new 20-year vision for Gateway and helps address today’s challenges regarding climate change and protections from sealevel rise. Schumer wants DOI to dedicate 10 million dollars to fulfill the goals set forth in the Gateway National Recreation Area GMP. Specifically, Schumer said the transformative Gateway projects, listed here, should be funded. Restoration of West Pond At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: Funding is needed to repair the breach, which has widened since Superstorm Sandy and to complete restoration of West Pond. Recreational and ecological improvements to Fort Tilden Historic District and Riis Beach:

Funding is needed to reduce the size of the parking lot, install permeable pavements, replant coastal scrub habitat, remove invasive and poison ivy and improve opportunities for concessions. Restoration of the Jacob Riis Bathhouse and recreation area: The bathhouse will be reprogrammed to allow the first floor to be converted to an open air space used for modular concessions, programming and installations. Ecological and recreational enhancements to the recreation area behind the bathhouse are needed. Wetlands restoration and shoreline softening on the southeastern and northern portions of Floyd Bennett Field: Funding is needed for shoreline softening, which will restore essential coastal habitat. Funding is also needed to plan and design bulkhead removal and adjacent wetlands restoration as part of long-term improvements. Long-Term Planning Projects: Planning resources are necessary for the continued long-term improvement of Gateway and to allow more people to easily access Gateway via public transportation, biking, and walking.

Thrilled By The News

Dear Editor: I grew up in Rockaway. My dad, Jim O’Connor, was a big fan of Dan Tubridy’s Pier 92 and my brother Danny bartended there for a few years. They’re both gone now and I no longer have relatives in Rockaway. I do have a number of friends that I’ve reconnected with on Facebook and would definitely stay at this hotel when it opens. I joined the Navy in 1979 and have lived in many states and traveled to many different countries in the world, but I will always be a Rockaway Girl. I remember the 1960s when all the beach houses and bungalows were torn or burned down. I am thrilled to known that Rockaway is finally rising from the ashes. Maureen O’Connor-Ransom

Meter Madness Continues

Dear Editor: Do you know the old cliché? Things have to get worse, before they get better? In the case of our parking meters in the 116th street corridor, this is the case. Local merchants and some residents have called 311 with the issue, all to no avail. The amount of meters not functioning are the same, or more. We can only hope that the DOT is working on the problem of coins and the collection of coins. We have some cities in the U.S. namely Tucson, Arizona and Minneapolis, Minn. that have meters that operate via an APP on a mobile phone, or a debit or credit card. Just think of the way the E-Z Pass works, and also the Metrocard. There is no need for coins, and the collection of Coins. Please contact your elected officials regarding this problem. Dear Editor: The proposed plans for the Old Boulevard hotel is truly fantastic news, especially from a team that has great local roots and we all know we can trust to do right by the community. And, actually know how to run a business, and run it well. Last week’s editorial was spot-on, as well. The “you” in “If you build it, they will come” is not the government, it’s brave and smart entrepreneurs, and the restaurant row emerging in the Beach 90s is evidence of that. The failure of the ferry is also evidence of it: if there were really a market for it, private enterprise would have stepped in already. Government has an important role to play, though: We need to press our leaders to continue/speed up street improvements, finish the freaking boardwalk (obviously), and, crucially, fix existing transportation (i.e, lifting the tolls and opening up the Rockaway Beach Line). Queens is really emerging as the next hot borough, and we must ensure that the Rockaways are a part of it. Opening up transportation connections between the peninsula and our neighbors in Astoria, Sunnyside, LIC, and so on will help ensure that the Rockaways are an integral part of Queens’ culture and economy, rather than just a seasonal distraction that’s quickly forgotten after Labor Day. Conservancy Should Plant Roots The Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JPRPC) is a somewhat off-the-radar group despite its high-powered board which includes Tom Secunda, one of the founders of Bloomberg LP and Adrian Benepe, former NYC Parks Commissioner, now with the Trust for Public Land. The mission of the JBRPC is to partner with City Parks and the National Park Service to expand public access to the bay; increase recreational and educational opportunities; promote and foster volunteerism; and preserve and restore natural areas, among other goals. It is the group that helped launch Rockaway! the very popular art exhibit at Fort Tilden last summer. (In other words, they funded it). The mission ain’t easy. For all the hollering we do at City Parks, they are a model of efficiency and cooperativeness in comparison to NPS. The Feds require everything in quadruple triplicate before some nameless, faceless Washington bureaucrat signs off on something. Or doesn’t sign off. An ongoing example of Fed stubbornness: Fort Tilden. There’s one area along the Rockaway oceanfront without dunes or protection – and that’s Fort Tilden. For the rest of us, that means should a big storm come, the side door is open. And why is that? Basically, a handful of Feds don’t think Fort Tilden should get sand and so far, we haven’t gotten sand. We salute the JPRPC for trying to partner with the intractable NPS. We hope frustration doesn’t kill its spirit. We need the JPRPC. The bay is really just starting to be rediscovered. Old timers will tell you that they used to swim in the bay and launch small sailboats from various docks on the bayside, including one at Beach 126th Street, across from where the Belle Harbor Yacht Club stands. The short-lived ferry gave

many people new appreciation for the bay. Riders could experience the views and see the potential that had been largely hidden by a long bay wall and buildings which have little use for the bay. In the coming summer of 2015 there will be more people using the bay. A variety of water activities will be available at Beach 92nd Street behind Thai Rock. No less than two stand-up paddle board companies will operate from different locations. Whale watching boats use the bay as well. So, with all this already happening, having powerful advocates for improved bay access, is welcome. But the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy seems to be in flux. Within recent weeks, Jackie Snyder, it’s executive director, has resigned and moved on; it’s Community liaison, Samantha Pedreiro, has left as well. While you may not recognize those names, they were beginning to make inroads, making more locals aware of the JBRPC. With those two gone, the connection between the conservancy and Rockaway grows ever more tenuous. We hope there will be Rockaway2! or something like we had last summer. Planning for such big events starts happening now (see above: Government needs quadruple triplicate to approve things). But things, as they are, don’t portend great things. In short, we need the JBRPC. But they need Rockaway. Big events, like Rockaway! (not possible without Rockaway locals) help them fundraise and gather more attention and clout. A strong Rockaway connection is vital if they want to be real stewards of the bay. Their early efforts, including planting beach grass, should be applauded. But community roots need tending to as well. Here’s hoping the JBRPC gets moving.

Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski were asked whether the top of current berms or dunes would be used as a walkway or means of transport between blocks, they said the dunes would be off-limits, especially in the areas where planting has occurred. Community Board Chair Dolores Orr asked for clarification on what Parks calls “partially funded projects.” Silver said the Parks website had a list of them but could not say whether the “partial funding” was explained (i.e. how much was funded and how much more was needed). A number of Rockaway projects are listed as “partially funded” and will remain in a sort of limbo until full funding comes in. As for the boardwalk rebuild, the Parks Commissioner said it was on schedule but he was not asked whether Skanska, the contractor, has incentive to finish on, or ahead of, schedule. Earlier this week, the first planks of the new boardwalk were put in place at Beach 94th Street. (See front page picture). As for the dunes in Belle Harbor and Neponsit, they are as fortified as they will be unless the Army Corps of Engineers says otherwise in its Reformulation Study which, so far, has not been completed.

Peter Larkin of the Community Board expressed his frustration with this, saying the dunes, as they are, will be washed away long before the current planting truly fortifies the dunes. After his update on the Parks Department, Silver took the time to address the controversial Request For Proposals (RFP) that NYC Parks was seeking for vendors along Shore front Parkway and Peninsula wide. “Let me first express the fact that we should have reached out to you sooner, we understand your concern,” he explained. “We have put the project on hold.” The proposal sought to put 10 vendors along yet to be determined sites to sell stuff like umbrellas, sunblock, and Rockaway themed clothing. Many members of the community were outspoken against such an idea, explaining that it would hurt local businesses that rely heavily on sales during the summer season. Orr was quick to point this out to Silver. “Some of the locations of those concessions would directly compete with our local businesses that are struggling to recover from Sandy.” Silver claimed that they will now seek community input on future Requests for Proposals (RFPs) before they issue them.

Rockaway Pipeline Project Nears Completion; Grants Available While the fight picks up against the Port Ambrose LNG project, another local natural gas project is making its way toward completion. The Rockaway Lateral Transco Pipeline Project, running from the Atlantic Ocean, through Riis Park, and up Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, is expected to be complete by March 2015. “We have been working nearly around the clock and remain on schedule to place the project into service by the end of the first quarter 2015,” Williams spokesperson Chris Stockton said. The Rockaway Lateral Project began construction on June 9, 2014. The project includes one mile of horizontal directional-drilled pipeline and 2.2 miles of conventionally laid 26” pipeline connected to an existing Transco pipeline in the Atlantic Ocean. National Grid’s portion of the project, the Brooklyn Queens Interconnect Project, which is complete, will connect with the Transco project. Together, the pipeline projects will bring additional natural gas into Rocka-

way, Brooklyn and other parts of Queens. GRANTS AVAILABLE Williams, the company behind the Transco pipeline, has a Rockaway Community Grants program “to benefit the environment and local communities within the NYC areas affected by Williams’ Rockaway Lateral project.” The company awards grants of up to $15,000 per funding cycle for each program. In October 2014, 13 organizations received grants, totaling $115,000. Some groups included the Rockaway Point Volunteer Emergency Services, the Breezy Point Cooperative, the Broad Channel Historical Society for the Collection Preservation project, Beautify Rockaway Beach, the Roxbury Volunteer Firehouse, the Rockaway Youth Task Force and more. Applications are being collected for the next funding cycle until February 15. Community organizations cans apply at www.williams.com/rockawaygrant. The next awards are expected to be announced in May 2015.

Brady & Marshak Celebrate 10 Years Nancy Brady, RN, Esq., a Rockaway resident since 1985, along with Linda Faith Marshak, Esq., of Great Neck, have provided legal services to seniors and their families in Rockaway and nearby communities over the past decade. In fact, 2015 marks their tenth anniversary. LNG Port Ambrose Fight Heats Up By Katie McFadden

The fight against the Liberty LNG Port Ambrose project has started to catch fire. Hundreds of elected officials, community leaders and local residents met at a public hearing at the JFK Airport Hilton on Wednesday, January 7, to express their thoughts on the liquefied natural gas site proposed off the coast of Jones Beach. Port Ambrose, a deep-water port proposed 16.1 nautical miles south of Jones Beach, would receive ships that carry liquefied natural gas, vaporize it, and would deliver it to Long Island through pipelines. The project would bring 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day – enough to meet the energy needs of 1.5 million homes. Liberty proposed the project in June 2013 and it was open to public comment during the summer. After releasing a Draft Environmental Impact Statement about the project on December 10, 2014, which stated the environmental impacts of the project would be minimal, the Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) have opened up another public comment period. They hosted two public meetings on the project to get some feedback. More than 100 people registered to speak at the New York meeting, with many showing opposition for the project. Among those opposed were local officials Councilman Donovan Richards and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder. Goldfeder expressed dissatisfaction over the limited time for the public to comment. MARAD and USCG only gave 60 days for public comment after releasing the DEIS. In addition to the January 7 meeting, the only other public hearing was held in New Jersey on January 8. The public comments were supposed to be due February 10, but according to Goldfeder, the period is being extended for an additional 30 days, in response to his request for more community involvement. An additional public hearing will be scheduled before the comment period is over. Part of the reason Goldfeder called for the extension, is because he and HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!

many others, feel the project is dangerous for local communities, since the deep-water port would store highly combustible liquefied natural gas. The proposed port could be used to export natural gas from the U.S., supply existing pipelines or store natural gas for periods of peak demands, but MARAD and USCG insist that the project would not be an export facility. Many also argue that the port could be a terrorist threat and that New York doesn’t need more natural gas to be imported. A previous plan to bring the Liberty LNG project to the coast of New Jersey, was vetoed by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie in 2011. Now Goldfeder is calling on New York Governor Anthony Cuomo, who recently banned hydrofracking in New York, to do the same for the project proposed off of Long Island. “Our families in southern Queens and Rockaway have been devastated by Superstorm Sandy and have seen firsthand what torturing our environment can do to us if we don’t take the proper precautions for the future,” Goldfeder said. “Approving Port Ambrose and bringing dangerous liquefied natural gas to our communities is simply unacceptable.” Not everyone is opposed to the project. While environmentalists are against it, those looking from an economic standpoint, support the project. For instance, Jack Friedman of the Queens Chamber of Commerce said in a letter, “The Queens Chamber supports this project after careful consideration because of the economic benefits it will have in the region including, but certainly not limited to, the bringing of over 800 construction related jobs, the spending of over $90 million dollars of goods and services in our local economy and an annual operating budget of $20 million on permanent and contract service jobs as well as revenues generated by taxes.” Friedman also pointed out that lower gas prices would also be beneficial. Mayor de Blasio and Frau Blucher Think it was cold last week? Faucets were dripping all over Broad Channel last week when the overnight temperature dropped into the single digits with wind chills well below zero! In the middle of the cold snap I received an email from our neighbor, Dr. Kathleen “Kit” Uvino PhD, who is presently a professor at Jamestown University in North Dakota teaching biology. Kit mentioned that it is not uncommon for the temperature out in her neck of the woods to run

-30 below zero! So why would anyone want to live in an area so cold? Well, in Dr. Uvino’s case, it’s simply because she is completely out of her mind but it is also no secret that North Dakota’s oil industry is booming. Advancements in hydraulic fracturing have helped Western North Dakota experience month after month of record-setting oil production, making for one of the fastest-growing economic expansions the U.S. has ever seen. With

the region having one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and generating over 75,000 new jobs in the past few years, thousands of workers have showed up searching for high-paying jobs. Kit advised me that the oil industry is employing so many people that other jobs are going unfilled because of a lack of workers. For instance, a Walmart in Kit’s area is paying $15 an hour for individuals to stock shelves! Before you pack your bags and rush off to the airport you should also know that although the salary figures may sound appealing (oil field workers in the state enjoy an average annual wage of $112,462) be warned that few of these jobs are located in a cushy office environment or require a mere 40 hours a week. Most employees report working anywhere from 80 to 120 hours a week, and conditions in North Dakota can be brutal, with temperatures regularly dropping below minus 30 degrees during the long winters. Housing is difficult to find, and many workers live in camps with shared bathrooms and dining quarters and of course, as is the case anywhere where money is being made, the cost of living reflects the high salaries. Turns out our Rockaway Ferry isn’t the only killing that can be attributed to our Mayor. Ground Hog Day is fast approaching but

the woodchucks at the Staten Island Zoo can rest easy this year in the knowledge that Mayor de Blasio won’t be killing anymore of their rodent relatives. The Zoo is forbidding our butter-fingered mayor from holding the critter at the annual shadow-sighting ceremony on February 2nd. The ban came after the groundhog de Blasio fumbled and dropped last year died a week later of internal injuries — and then Staten Island Zoo officials covered up the death. Little wonder that the Central Park Carriage Horses all get nervous when de Blasio is around! Not unlike Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein, anytime our Mayor’s name is mentioned the Central Park horses all reel back and start to whinny! We drink 2 gallons of whole milk a week and its short shelf life makes it impossible to buy in bulk. Rockaway’s geography and tolls add to the problem. For this article, I went on a quest to find the best and most convenient milk options available here. I know how expensive and unreliable the USDA stamp can be, so I do not require it to be certified, especially if I’ve visited the farm or received approval from a credible source. Since we drink a lot of milk, and I am giving it regularly to a little person, I always look for the following: No antibiotics/hormones and

pesticide/GMO free feed; Grass-fed diet and full access to pasture when weather permits, hay when needed. No grains or, even worse, other animals (Mad Cow Disease); The least amount of pasteurization possible, which is especially difficult to obtain because organic milk is often ultra-pasteurized, killing all bacteria and some of the nutrients with it. The milk you want for taste and health benefits won’t last longer than a week. It’s not as convenient, but it’s better for you; Environmentally sustainable and locally sourced. These go hand in hand because local food travels shorter distances, putting less of an impact on our environment. In

addition, this covers the welfare of the cows and the land they are raised on. For my experiment, I shopped at our supermarkets, which have similar offerings and prices. two of three only offered organic milk in half-gallon sizes, forcing consumers that drink a lot to purchase smaller amounts at a higher price. All of the supermarkets carry Horizon ($4.99/half gallon), which is owned by Dean, America’s leading producer of milk and possibly the biggest violator of organic standards. I’ve read countless articles about Horizon’s operation of factory farms and would never purchase their milk. Next up are private labels such as Stop & Shop’s Nature’s Promise ($4.09) and Waldbaums’ Greenway Organic ($3.99). Greenway Organic is also available in gallons for $6.79, which is a plus. With private labels, the supermarkets purchase the milk from many different farms and cooperatives and market it as their own. They have the potential to be good sources at lower prices, but they do not share information about the farms. A phone call to Stop & Shop proved this. Since the foundation of organics is transparency, I don’t recommend any of these brands at this point. Mountainside Farms is available at Waldbaums (on sale for $2.99) and Key Food ($3.59). Located in the Catskills, they are the only brand of non-certified milk that doesn’t appear to practice factory farming. They have

trademarked Ultra Pure™ technology, adding to processing, which I am not a fan of. Their labeling claims they don’t use antibiotics or hormones and they seem to be environmentally conscious and transparent. However, I couldn’t find any 3rd party reviews of this milk so the jury is still out. The last two brands are Organic Valley ($5.29-$5.59) and Stoneyfield Farm ($4.59-5.59). Organic Valley, a Wisconsin company, operates CROPP, a cooperative of over 1,500 dairy farmers in the U.S. Stoneyfield Farm, located in New Hampshire, purchases most of its milk from CROPP and the rest from New England farms. Both received a 4/5 rating from the Cornucopia Institute so I do recommend them even though they aren’t local and the cows are fed 10% grain. One day I hope that Rockaway will have a food co-op or an existing store will sell milk delivered directly from a local farm. There is a market for it – I know because our CSA sold out within a week and I am constantly being asked to add more products. Until then, I take a trip to Brooklyn’s Flatbush Coop and purchase Natural by Nature ($7.99/gallon), a local organic brand that I trust. When I run out, I buy Stonyfield Farm or Organic Valley milk from a supermarket here in Rockaway. When we make purchases based on education we are voting for better products. I hope that you will vote, too.

Finding Happiness in the midst of Discomfort Bodhichitta is a Sanskrit word meaning “Awakened Heart.” It is said to exist in each and every one of us. Pema Chodron, a famous Buddhist nun, says “In difficult times it is the bodhichitta that heals. When inspiration has been hidden, when we feel ready to give up, this is the time when healing can be found in the tenderness of pain itself.” This may seem like an unusual way to heal the heart but I believe there is great value in accepting pain, suffering and discomfort. As we all know, life is not always pleasant. We are taught from a young age to be happy and

avoid suffering. We strive to be perfect in whatever we do in life. Never really being content with what we have because we are trying to be perfect in an imperfect world. Pema Chodron tells us that everything that occurs is not only usable and workable but is actually the path itself. We can use everything that happens to us as a lesson or a wake-up call. Perhaps not saying to yourself, why me? Use your misfortune as a tool to awaken your heart. Do not judge, do not belittle, instead take the road less travelled by so many of us and ac-

cept. Move on with the suffering as a life lesson. My mother used to say, “God does not give us what we can’t handle.” I still question this statement. To begin, start by finding love, kindness and compassion for yourself. So often, we are giving love to someone else when in fact your first love should start with you! If you start with a basic loving kindness towards yourself you will then be able to extend this to all beings. Get out of your head and stop thinking so much. You have everything you need. We are all on the road to self-improvement and yet we are already beautiful, vibrant human beings. You are full of warmth and light; all you have to do is love yourself for who you are. Recently, I went to a meditation workshop and found so much happiness sitting with my breath. It was basic and for a beginner like myself, so profound and advanced. For so many people meditation is boring and makes no sense. There is no time in their day because there is so much to do and they just don’t like it. For others, they have read how positive and healthy it is so they are trying to start a practice. It is advisable to start meditating with someone who has experience to help guide you. From there, you can begin your own personal practice when you are comfort-

able with discomfort. Meditation is a practice so you must do it even when you don’t want to. For me it is about using the breath and the body to get to the mind. Don’t let your mind control you, take the time to control your mind through meditation. It is not easy and may cause uneasiness. However, there is this place they call the “Present Moment” and it is truly a gift that removes all the obstacles and struggles on your path. It is part of your journey if you choose to be truly kind and compassionate to yourself. You will begin to find your joy that is already in your heart. The hours will be from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., which might be prohibitive, but we want to keep it to reasonable hours since this is a residential neighborhood. To have people coming and going, 24 hours a day, would not be appropriate,” she said. “That might limit who is interested, but on the other hand, it might draw a particular group of people who are serious about what they’re doing and can dedicate the time to their work.” Rifé says she has had some inquiries about the space, but hasn’t rented out any of the studios yet. “I kind of want to see who is interested first. It’s like making soup. You need to have the right ingredients for something to go together,” she said. She hopes to have all of the studios rented out by the end of the month. Rifé hopes to fill the space with local artists, but will reach out to Brooklyn and Manhattan if Rockaway artists don’t come through. She’s open to friends sharing one studio. For now, Rifé says the art building’s primary mission is to be “a place where you can be alone in your own space and make whatever you want to make.” However she is open to it becoming a place where people sell their art or display it in a gallery. She also hopes

to hold programs where children or even adults can come in and make their own work. “If I have a goal, besides it being art studios, it’s to give people an opportunity to make things. Today’s topic is screening tests – what’s recommended and what is not. In other words when should a test like a colonoscopy be done on a patient without symptoms. Recently the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) came out with some recommendations. But other organizations like the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American College of Physicians also make recommendations and they don’t always agree with each other. In addition, screening tests may not be without risk or harm, e.g. bowel perforation during a colonoscopy. There’s also radiation exposure – an average CT scan has the same radiation exposure as 100 chest X-Rays. To begin, the USPSTF recom-

mends that anyone with a 30-packyear (1 pack a day x 30 years) or more smoking history, between the ages of 55 to 80, who either still smokes or who quit less that 15 years ago should undergo an annual chest CT scan. Other studies place the upper age at 74. Also, one study showed that 18% of lung cancers detected by CT scanning were slow growing and unlikely to impact the patient’s life expectancy. This is called over-diagnosis and often leads to more unnecessary tests and surgery. As for screening for colon cancer, the ACS suggests one of the following schedules starting at age 50 (for someone who does not have a family history of colon cancer): Colonoscopy every 10 years; flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years; barium enema every 5 years; CT

colonography (“virtual colonoscopy”) every 5 years; fecal occult blood test annually or annual fecal immunochemical testing. The USPSTF recommendations are somewhat different. Bear in mind however that colonoscopy remains the gold standard plus it is both diagnostic and preventative as polyps, some of which may be pre-cancerous, are removed. Recommendations for prostate cancer screening differ greatly from organization to organization. For example in 2012 the USPSTF recommended against PSA screening at all saying it does more harm than good (men undergoing invasive tests, biopsies and surgery to remove tumors that never would have harmed them). The ACS recommends against screening unless the doctor and patient discuss the screening beforehand. If both agree then the ACS recommends annual PSA or digital rectal exam starting at age 50. Men at high risk (i.e. African-American men or men with a first-degree

relative diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65) should start screening at age 45. Many studies recommend against screening after age 70. Some evidence suggests that a very low PSA level at age 45 predicts less than a 1% chance of developing metastatic prostate cancer before age 75 which in theory would preclude further testing. As you can see, because recommendations for screening differ it is important for you to discuss screening with your doctor to come up with a plan individualized to your needs. The idea was to create a fan-friendly event to bring fans together in order to help get them through the long winter months.

Blacknick sees this turning into a Mets fan tradition and that they are already thinking about next year’s convention. The event serves as further proof that despite meager results and a growing rift with ownership over the past few seasons, Mets fans remain a fiercely loyal bunch.

Bad weather and a quiet offseason weren’t enough to keep Mets fans down. This past Saturday, over 300 Mets fanatics from all over the area packed the house at McFadden’s of Citi Field for the second annual Queens Baseball Convention. Fans in attendance participated in panels, Q&A sessions, autograph signings, and got to converse with special guests. This year’s keynote speakers were 1986 World Champions Mookie Wilson and Wally Backman, the latter of whom also serves as the manager of the Las Vegas 51s, the team’s AAA affiliate. Other panelists included Adam Rubin of ESPN, Paul Lukas of Uni Watch, and many more. They discussed a wide range of topics from the best Mets uniform of all-time to the current state of the Mets. The last part of the event was the presentation of The Gil Hodges Unforgettable Fire Award, which is presented annually at the QBC. This year’s award was presented by Mets radio play-by-play announcer Josh Lewin and was given

Stewed Eggplant w/Zucchini & Chick Peas by Sharon Feldman

My friend Gradita Teahan turned me on to this recipe. The only change I made was the amount of garlic I used. With winter here, it’s a great comfort food! Serves: 6-8 1 large eggplant 1 clove garlic (I use more, I like garlic) 1 onion, chopped 1/3 cup olive oil 1 cup canned chick peas, drained 2 small zucchini squash, unpeeled and cut into 1 inch cubes 1 can Italian tomatoes (1 pound, one ounce), drained ½ teaspoon oregano Salt and pepper to taste Prepare eggplant. Wash, dry and remove the green tip from the top of the vegetable, plus a small slice from the bottom. Split it into quar-

ters lengthwise, and then slice to desired thickness, then again into cubes. DO NOT PEEL, Sprinkle with salt. Place in a non-metal colander or strainer. Put a bowl underneath to catch the excess fluid, approximately 20 minutes. Rinse and dry. In a 12 inch skillet with deep sides, sauté garlic and onion in hot olive oil until wilted. Add chick peas, cover, and simmer over low heat about 10 minutes. Add zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, oregano, salt and pepper. Cover and cook over medium heat until vegetables are tender, approximately 30 minutes. Serve hot or cold. ++ I use a large Dutch oven or pasta pot so it does not fall onto the stove when I’m stirring it. Serve over brown rice or use Semolina or Italian bread for dunking.

The state of New Jersey clubs had many Rockaway postals for sale and each trip fattened OUR great collection of Historical Views. My wife Aldine passed away six years ago and it was my wife who was instrumental in getting me started collection Rockaway Beach postcards. The entire story is in my book, “ The Rockaway’s”, by Arcadia Publishing Company in 2007. To date, almost 5000 copies of my books have been sold.
