By Katie McFadden
The secret is out. We’ve known it all along, but others are starting to catch on. The overflow of traffic, massive crowds waiting for the buses and trains and lines to eateries wrapped around buildings on Sunday, July 19, showed Rockaway is back and it’s the place to be for the summer. At the end of 2014, Lonely Planet named Queens the best US travel destination for 2015. In June, New Yorkers for Parks named Rockaway Beach the number one beach in the city. Earlier this month, The New Yorker magazine featured Rockaway on their cover. The Rockaway Times serves as a cheerleader for the peninsula each week and it seems everyone is putting Rockaway on their must-do list. The influx of visitors on the high 90-degree Sunday showed that Rockaway has made a comeback since Sandy. Rockaway saw 7.8 million visitors in the summer before Hurricane Sandy. In the summer after, that number was cut to less than half with 3.3 million visitors. In the summer of 2014, 4 million hit the beaches. Now Rockaway is on its way to setting new records, or at least hitting similar ones to the crowds seen in the 1970’s and ‘80s. “It’s all quite simple, there are beaches to sit on now,” activist John Cori said. “Prior to Sandy and Irene, there was so much beach loss there was very little beach to enjoy, especially in the go-to areas for DFDs in Rockaway Beach and parts of Rockaway Park. Now with lots of room and much better publicity by NYC and media, we are getting close to the 1980’s levels of
crowds.” Photos and videos on social media showed just how crowded Rockaway got on Sunday. A video posted by Barbara Pastore showed what looked like a parade of people flowing down Beach 98th street from the A train. Various photos on Facebook and Instagram showed crowded train platforms, with not a foot of room to spare between visitors. The Rockaway Times’ Kevin Boyle shot a photo showing traffic heading for Riis Park, taking up all three lanes and backed up to the Marine Parkway Bridge at 2:30 in the afternoon. According to operators of the Riis Park Parking lot, there were 7,135 cars in the lot that day, as opposed to the 600 that came on the cloudier Saturday. The increase in crowds was good for local businesses and those who could get into them. Crowds at the concessions flooded onto the boardwalk, with some customers reporting 20 to 40 minute waits for food or a drink. One local reported more than 30 people waiting on line to get into the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, where the popular Tacoway Beach is located. Some said they waited 30-45 minutes for a table at popular restaurants, like the Bungalow Bar, but service was still on point. Some businesses ran out of supplies like 101 Deli, which had no more rolls and Boardwalk Bagel, which had no more hero bread by 4 p.m. Some gas stations even ran out of gas. While the overflow proved good for business, it also showed that Rockaway’s infrastructure isn’t equipped to handle it. With Continued on page 16

Repossessed Cars To Be Sold Off Banks Forced To Cut Their Losses
Brooklyn, NY – High repossession rates can be a crisis for many banks. When the bank repossess’ a vehicle they are forced to incur the cost of repossession of the vehicle and the cost of getting these vehicles to auction in order to sell them off. If the vehicle does not sell at the auction the bank has to return the vehicle to the storage lot and then attempt to sell at the next auction. Enormous transportation, storage and security expenses are incurred with this process. It has become harder for the banks to keep up with the repo rate due. Making it harder for the banks is the fact that dealers now have access to the tremendous amount of low mileage lease returns coming back every month. Additionally rental car companies now sell their rental car fleet directly to dealers. It is easier for a dealer to take a lease return or off rental vehicle and re-sell it rather than to deal with a repo and the title complications that can be associated with repo vehicles. This is what has created a crisis for the banks; too many repos, no one to buy them. The longer these cars sit, the bigger the losses are for the banks. “Well that is all about to change now” according to Richard Cappetta, General Manager at Kings County Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM.

No haggling; each vehicle is clearly marked for quick sale, first come, first sold.”
A Real Bargain “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone to come in and get a real bargain,” adds Richard Capetta. “Our staff has even told their families and friends to come down and we’ve notified some local churches and charities to come down as well to take advantage of these low prices. We want to make sure the local community benefits from this event. You’ll find all kinds of cars, trucks, vans and sport utilities from 6 months old to 6 years old.”

A Musical Conversation This is my third anniversary of an encounter with a man named Country. I was trying to remember if I wrote about this but couldn’t find anything in the archives so I figured I’d better write this one down because it’s one for the books. It was a beautiful summer day. Starting before noon, loud music came from a window on the 4th floor of a nursing home behind my house. After a couple of hours it was just starting to get under my skin. At around two o’clock I went out for a bike ride but first a made a stop at the front desk and told the people working there that the music needed to be
turned down. They said, “Sure.” When I got back at 4 o’clock, the music was as loud as ever and it was only then that I realized the speaker from which the music was blaring, was sitting on a windowsill pointing out. Everyone outside the building could get blasted but not the person in the room. I called the front desk and they said they had asked him to stop. I did what any mature adult would do. I went into my garage and grabbed some tennis balls and started throwing them at the speaker. I was hoping to knock the speaker back into the room and give the guy a hint. It was a fourth floor window. I made some damn
good throws but kept missing by a foot or so. And as I was doing this, I was becoming more pissed. I hurled a ball again but almost threw out my arm. That was it. I stormed around the corner and charged into the lobby. I yelled at the people, “I told you to tell him to turn it off. It’s been five hours!” “We tried,” a nice woman said, “but he scared us.” “Where’s the elevator?!” They pointed and up I went to the 4th floor to confront whoever was scaring them and bugging me. It was a long hallway of doors, but it was easy to know which one had a full concert going on behind it. I pounded on the door. Really pounded. A deep belligerent voice boomed from behind the door “Who The F Is It?!” Now the dialogue that followed could’ve been in Scarface or any Joe Pesci movie. There were many F bombs. And I could spell them out here but there were so many I don’t think spellcheck could handle all the fooks. Anyway, after the voice said, “Who the F is it,” I shouted, “Turn off the effin’ music!” “F U “ came the growling reply. I pounded on the door again and said again. “No F U ! Turn off the effin’ music.” I heard some moving around on the other side of the door. Then the door lock getting unlocked. I got a little on my toes ready for a fight. He
was still yelling about how he was gonna keep playing the effin’ music. Then the door swung open. And I wasn’t quite ready for this. He was in a wheelchair. He had no legs. But wait. It gets better. He was nude. But wait, it gets better. He motions with his hand and says, “Step the F back.” That’s right. Here’s a nude guy in a wheelchair telling me to Step the F back. So like anybody would do facing a poor guy in a wheelchair I bent over and went nose to nose and yelled, “F You !” He went on a little tirade about how the music was payback from some time some neighbor (not me) played music that was too loud. Keeping my F bomb to every other word I said I didn’t give an F and that I don’t who or when he was talking about but his effin’ stuff had to stop now or I was gonna take that speaker and toss it (like an effin’ tennis ball). He paused. He kinda seemed amused by me. And then, it gets better. He stuck out his hand to shake mine and said, “My name’s Country. We’re good.” It was the first time I shook hands with a naked man in a wheelchair. I didn’t say much more than “all right” and walked away. Country rolled back inside and turned off the music. Happy anniversary, Country.

Fees Are A Crime Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder and State Senator Joseph Addabbo, along with the 100th Police Precinct Community Council and community leaders, called on Chancellor Carmen Farina and the NYC Department of Education (DOE) to waive fees and restrictions relating to the National Night Out Against Crime. In previous years the event, which is held annually to promote cooperation between police and
the communities they serve, has been held at the athletic fields of the former Beach Channel High School. This year, the representatives say, the DOE has chosen not waive new permit fees totaling more than $2,000. They are calling on the DOE to “to promote community-police relations in Superstorm Sandy-devastated neighborhood with growing community safety concerns, according to a media briefing.

Karine and Dennis Cook met while attending Christ the King High School in Middle Village where they both played basketball. They became those high school sweethearts that people think could only belong on the big screen, that get married and live happily ever after. They are often seen in the community with their three beautiful children, playing basketball, Rockaway Little League, hanging out at the beach with a close knit group of friends and family or dowwn in Riis Park on a Wednesday night for Rockaway Beach Volleyball playing for the Wharf Rats. They have tremendous passion, sportsmanship and a competitiveness that comes through both on and off the field or court. This competitiveness and need to win is now going towards something that should never happen to those high school sweethearts that belong on the big screen- a few months ago Karine was diagnosed with breast cancer and chronic myeloid leukemia. She and her supportive and loving family are facing the biggest fight of their lives and a game that is a must win. When the Rockaway community heard this devastating news, they came together in a way that only a small, team-like town could. A Crowd Rise page was made in April to help the Cook family cover the mounting and oppressive medical bills; the page raised more than $57,000. A Food Tidings page was also created which friends signed up for to bring a meal to the Cook family for several days. Despite all of Karine’s treatments, they are still seen throughout the community, at their children’s softball and baseball games or down at Riis Park on a Wednesday evening. When asked how things are going or how Karine is feeling they are always very upbeat, positive and humbled by the
love and support they are getting from their newest team, The Rockaway Community. The support for the Cook family was already more than they had ever hoped and never had to ask for. Then came the Caring for Karine campaign. The Graybeards were a very integral part in getting donations and setting up an event thought up by Tim Tubridy and Kristin Fraser that was held on Saturday, July 18 at the Monsignor William F. Burke Knights of Columbus to benefit the Cook family and Karine’s fight. Many of Karine’s friends belong to Rockaway Wish, which organized and ran the 50/50, while the Knights donated the hall and tried to keep all costs low for the event. The community businesses also donated and helped in any way they could. The Knights of Columbus hall was lined wall to wall with tables filled with donations of things to be raffled off, ranging from paddle board lessons to sports memorabilia, game tickets and gift certificates to different restaurants. A tent was set up in the parking lot to accommodate the amount of people who attended. Wine With Sue donated their talents and played for the crowd outside while DJs at Work kept the party going inside. The entire Tubridy family helped between DJing Continued on page 31

Fro-Yo Coming to Beach 109th By Katie McFadden Rockaway is getting its first frozen yogurt shop. The frozen sweet treats have popped up all over Manhattan and other spots in recent years and have proven popular, but now residents will have one less reason to leave the peninsula. Coastal Frozen Yogurt will be opening at 108-19 Rockaway Beach Drive soon. The Shannon ladies, including Maureen Shannon, Casey James, Morgan Shannon and Charlotte Shannon, all from Rockaway, have always wanted to open a business, and now their dream is coming alive. When the family was displaced after Sandy, they fell in love with a frozen yogurt shop down the street from their temporary home in Manhattan and would go there often. When they returned to Rockaway, they continued to feed their craving by taking the trip over the Cross Bay Bridge to Twist It, Top It in Howard Beach. “We’re all from Rockaway and feel like we have to leave the peninsula for a lot of things,” Morgan Shannon said. “We didn’t want frozen yogurt to be one of them anymore.” “We’d been talking about doing a business for a long time and nothing stuck until frozen yogurt. We needed to stop talking and just do something about it,” Casey James said. “We knew we didn’t have anything like this in Rockaway and if someone else opened one and we didn’t go through with it, we’d be kicking ourselves,” Morgan Shannon added. So they stopped talking and took action. The family looked at several locations, but settled on the Beach 109th Street location, which was the first one they looked at. “Our dad grew up on this block, so it’s kind of special to us,” Morgan Shannon said. The location has proven to be a challenging one, with Sweet Serenity Cupcakes taking over the spot for a short time,

after Dierdre Maeve’s deli had closed its doors many years before. However, the Shannons are optimistic about the locale, especially its future. The block is already home to Boardwalk Bagel, Rock-Jitsu, Dalton’s and Healy’s and being next to a school will be beneficial, especially when class gets out each day. However, with hopes of the ferry returning to Beach 108th Street in 2017 and talks of the Rockaway Beach Hotel opening across the street from the shop, the block may be the next big part of the Rockaway Renaissance. Much like other frozen yogurt locations, Coastal Frozen Yogurt will be self-serve, giving customers the pleasure of creating their own treat. There will be 10 flavors, including standard flavors like chocolate, vanilla and cookies and cream and seasonal flavors that will rotate. They will also have one sorbet and one sugar-free option and all flavors will be low fat or fat-free. After filling a cup with yogurt, customers will be able to pick from a choice of about 35 different toppings to complete their dessert like fruit, nuts, candy, sprinkles, syrups and more. “You can get chocolate and fudge or top it with fruit for a healthier option,” Casey James said. Customers will pay by the ounce for the contents in the cup. The Shannon girls have their concerns, of course. “I think anyone is nervous when opening a business. I’m nervous about the winter months,” Morgan Shannon said. Depending on how business goes, the women may consider adding other products, besides frozen yogurt. However, after several months of planning, renovations and hard work, the family is ready to get the ball rolling. “Now that we see it all coming together, this place is looking really cool,” Casey James said. “I would want to come Continued on page 28

Checking Out Waldbaum’s to Close; Stop & Shop May Take Over By Katie McFadden Waldbaum’s is closing and another Stop & Shop is expected to take over. On Sunday, July 19, parent company, the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, better known as A&P, declared bankruptcy. The company filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time since 2010. On Monday, July 20, Stop & Shop announced it will acquire 25 A&P stores in a $146 million agreement and will convert them to Stop & Shop supermarkets. Rockaway’s Waldbaum’s at 112-15 Beach Channel Drive is one of them. “Stop & Shop is always looking for convenient locations to better serve our customers,” Don Sussman, Stop & Shop’s New York Metro Division President, said in a press release. “We are very happy to have the opportunity to expand our presence in greater New York and serve new customers. We look forward to providing customers with delivering unmatched selection, quality and value that they have come to expect from Stop & Shop.” On Tuesday, a Rockaway Waldbaum’s employee, who did not want to be identified, confirmed that Stop
& Shop will be taking over and is expecting it to be a smooth transition. “We’re not closing. Only the logo is changing. One day it will be a Waldbaum’s and overnight, it will become Stop & Shop,” they said. The employee said added the current staff will maintain their jobs and the transition is expected to happen sometime at the end of the year. No definite date is set. The Stop & Shop agreement is subject to further terms and conditions and is subject to court approval in the bankruptcy case. There is potential for a subsequent auction in which other high bids may be received and accepted by A&P for these stores, meaning other companies can make offers. When the Rockaway Times broke the news of the local Waldbaum’s closing on social media, many residents chimed in, expressing that they’d want a Trader Joe’s, Fairway or Wegmans to come to the location. Some seemed happy about the news, adding that the shelves at Waldbaum’s have seemed a bit bare lately. However A&P claims that the stores will run normally until they close or transition. Other residents were shocked
and saddened to hear that a longtime staple will no longer be around. Waldbaum’s supermarkets were started by the Waldbaum family with the first location opening in Brooklyn in 1904. In the Rockaway Times Hurricane Sandy Second Anniversary edition this past October, a Waldbaum’s advertisement read, “Since 1904, Waldbaum’s has always been more than a store. We’ve been a friend, a neighbor, and a part of the community. For the past hundred years, we’ve been dedicated to the Rockaway community and will be for the next hundred.” When Waldbaum’s reopened after Sandy on February 22, 2013, it served as a symbol of hope to many, showing that things were finally coming back to life on the peninsula. The Waldbaum’s brand has been around since 1904, but Rockaway Times historian Emil Lucev could
only trace its local history back to an announcement saying that the Rockaway location would open in June 1956. The Rockaway Times spoke with Gerry Baskin, who was manager of the local store in 1967 and said he believed it opened in the early 1960s. Baskin had worked for the Waldbaum’s company for 50 years, until he retired earlier this year, knowing that the company’s future wasn’t looking too good. “The company changed. Waldbaums’s was bought by A&P in 1986. It used to be family owned. We all knew the owner. I was with them when they had 20 stores and it grew to 112. It was really nice to work with Julia and Ira Waldbaum. When the family owned it, it was operated a lot differently than Continued on page 20

It is now located on the lobby floor on 106-20 Shore Front Parkway, just steps away from the beach. “We love to see the seniors come in here with happy, smiling faces,” Fay Schwimmer, the director of the center, says. She has been working here for five years, 10 years total with JASA. “It’s a place where they can come and socialize. It gives them a sense a purpose to come here in the morning.” Fern Prusak has worked at JASA for eight years. “What else would [the seniors] do if they didn’t come here?” she asks. “They can come here and have a good meal, play cards and games like bingo, and go on trips.” In fact, the center orga-
nizes trips all around the tristate area, from Mets games at Citi Field to the Radio City Spring Spectacular to their upcoming mini golf excursion and everything in between. Schwimmer and Prusak have taken great pride in forming a community and family around the JASA center. “When one of the core people who come every day don’t make it here, we try to call and make sure everything is alright,” Prusak said. “We throw birthday parties for them. If they need something from the store and we’re in the area, we try and get it for them.” Despite the organization’s full name, JASA is open to seniors of all ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds. It serves over 10,000 seniors across 25 locations in New York City and Long Island. JASA also organizes many community endeavors and community service opportunities. Linda Green, 65, started going to JASA in November 2012. “This was the best thing to come out of Hurricane Sandy,” she says. Hailing from Redfern in Far Rockaway, Green served 22 years in the Army, including six years stationed in Germany. Now retired, she loves to knit and crochet “for any organization that needs it.” Green and

Greg Trooper Top Music Talent At RAA/ Fort Tilden By Christine Mullaly
Before iPods, streaming, and playlists, there was just radio and a young boy named Greg Trooper growing up in New Jersey in the mid-‘60’s listening to his radio. Trooper absorbed Memphis and Detroit soul and the reinterpretation of delta blues that was the British Invasion. By fortune he was steeped in this music until Bob Dylan arrived on the scene to reinvent the role of the singer-songwriter in the late ‘60’s. Through exposure to Dylan and the explosion of singer-songwriters in the ‘70s, Trooper began to gravitate toward lyrically-based music. This led the multi-talented young man to discover the world of country-based singer-songwriters like John Prine. Trooper then began writing his own roots-based, Americana songs and 13 albums later, he will perform this Sunday night in RAA’s sTudio 7 gallery in Fort Tilden. Greg Trooper is “on the endless tour. And if any musician should sail around the world sharing his

music with increasingly enthusiastic audiences, it’s Trooper. In a typical year, his talents take him to Europe and all points between his home base in Brooklyn and the Southwestern United States. Trooper’s latest album, Live at the Rock Room, is a cross-section of previously released songs and one new track, Broken Man. Recorded with Chip Dolan on accordion and keyboards and Jack Saunders on upright bass, the album has been receiving positive buzz from critics, which is not surprising. Trooper’s songs have been recorded by artists of high acclaim including Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, Vince Gill, Tom Russell, Maura O’Connell and more. Country icons Emmylou Harris and Roseanne Cash have leant their vocal harmonies to Trooper’s albums and he’s taken the stage with John Prine and Steve Earle. Trooper recently received a call from HBO inquiring about potential use of his song “Everywhere for the new HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero, so we may soon be hearing his lyr-
ics and music there as well. While Trooper’s albums are necessary downloads, when the occasion arises to see and hear him perform live, it is not an opportunity to be missed. It can’t be easy to be a one-man band. Trooper plays guitar and harmonica and shares his voice generously with the audience. His guitar playing draws the audience in, and combined with his smart, insightful lyrics, engage the listener on emotional, intellectual and rhythmic levels. In Trooper’s music we find lyrics that are compelling, and story lines range from haunting to comedic. There aren’t any throwaway lines or cheap rhymes. In “These Sunday Nights from BackShop Live (2006) we find the lyrics: “Station’s dark and it’s empty/ Train stops here once every century/ Got to lose these Sunday nights/ All that’s left in my pocket/ Couldn’t buy a gin or a tonic/ Got to lose these Sunday nights/ Took myself downtown nothing’s open/ Still I hung around who am I jokin. Trooper’s interior rhymes are intelligent and propel the story forward, evoking the often bleak prospects (minus summer Sunday Fundays) as the sunsets on the loneliest night of the week. All is not bleak in the musical landscape created by Greg Trooper. The celebratory “Ireland (a WFUV playlist favorite) is decidedly up-
lifting and the raucous “Mary of the Scots in Queens is filled with good-natured adult humor. To say that you’ll come hear Trooper play on Sunday evening at 7 pm in RAA’s sTudio 7 gallery and tap your feet or clap your hands would really be a slight to Trooper’s talent and acumen as an accomplished singer-songwriter. Trooper will draw you in, both rhythmically and intellectually. You will leave more than satisfied that you came out and completely void of the damned old Sunday night blues. a lack of available parking, many visitors parked along Beach Channel Drive and parts of Rockaway Beach Boulevard in any spot they could find, including those blocking fire hydrants and crosswalks. Some residents said the parking situation became scary. “I had someone threaten me over a parking spot when I was parking by my house on 91st street, resident Susan Duffy said. “He flashed a PBA card and tried to convince me he was a police officer, meanwhile the guy had just whipped an illegal U turn, was driving a car with Illinois plates and could barely be understood due to his extremely thick accent. He was not happy when I refused to move. Some residents claim like they feel like hostages, because they’re afraid to move their own cars. “Resident parking is a huge necessity. Not everyone lives in a house or can afford rent plus a parking spot. Having visitors come and support the businesses is great but when residents can’t leave their homes to go to a store or visit a friend, it leads to tensions between locals and visitors, Jolene Willis said. “I feel like a prisoner that can’t leave the peninsula on the weekends, Barbara Lemza-Millet added. Those who did attempt to move around or off and on the peninsula, found themselves caught in the visitor traffic for uncomfortable amounts of time. “I turned off the Belt at about 1:45 p.m. onto Flatbush Ave. S. It took us 40 minutes to reach the end of the parking lot at Riis Park. All the traffic was a backup of cars trying to park in the Riis Park lot, Maureen Blum Del Vecchio said. “It took 20 minutes to go from 106th Street to 90th on Shore Front with people looking for parking spots and stopping in the middle of the road to unload their things, Barbara Knott added. “I left Rockaway after 9 p.m. just to go to Howard Beach it took almost an hour, Sharon Rowland said. Local traffic backups continued into late hours, with beach traffic still exiting to both bridges around 10 p.m. In addition to the general aggravation of long waits, some pointed out the potential dangers of having traffic blocked in emer-
gency situations, preventing ambulances, fire trucks or cop cars from getting through easily. Those who tried their luck with public transportation also had problems. “I don’t know what happened to the MTA but the Q35 heading into Brooklyn was not running for two hours, Athina Minerva said. “My daughter got a ride to the Circle at Fort Tilden to get the Q35 to Brooklyn at 6:15 p.m. She waited until 8:05 p.m. for a bus and got home in Marine Park at 9:05 p.m. She usually is home in an hour or less door to door on Sunday night from Breezy! Frances McDonald claimed. Many offered solutions to the weekend problems, like opening more lanes along Flatbush Avenue and Cross Bay Boulevard, both which used to be three lanes-wide. Some suggested creating more municipal parking lots, to give the cars somewhere to go, instead of taking over illegal spots. Some believe Rockaway should start charging for beach access and parking, like Long Beach and Jones Beach. Ferry activists say the traffic woes provide even more of a reason for why the ferry should return before 2017. “An early ferry return for Rockaway would ease some of the traffic flow from Manhattan & Brooklyn to Rockaway.. If we still had our ferry service with weekends added, many people would take the Rockaway Ferry to the Rockaway Peninsula, Laura Deckelman said. Local politicians heard the message loud and clear. Rockaway’s traffic conditions this summer are unacceptable. On Wednesday, July 22, Councilman Eric Ulrich, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and Senator Joe Addabbo, met with the proper agencies to come up with some solutions. The NYPD will add additional resources from its Traffic Division to ensure traffic runs smoothly and rules are enforced. The MTA will open additional cash or EZPass lanes at bridges when necessary. The DOT will monitor the timing of traffic lights on Flatbush and Cross Bay Boulevard. The US Park Police will triple their force this weekend to monitor traffic, plus more.

Whose Tern Is It Now?
By Lou Pastina Yes, I grew up in “Greenpernt,” but I did not mean “turn,” I meant “tern,” as in bird. Retirement has afforded me the opportunity to go to the beach more often. Some neighbors are actually counting Louie sightings, and I have to admit they are not entirely wrong; I spend only small amounts of time at the beach. Although I have an Italian last name, I owe my skin pigmentation to my Irish mother, God bless her! I was one of those preteen kids who lived in bungalows on 87th Street and would spend dawn to dusk on the beach with white lotion on his face and a white tee shirt to fend off the sun. Didn’t help much. I went to bed in the bungalows glowing with red hot skin trying not to move, hoping it would get better. Back in those days it was not unusual to find starfish on the rock jetties, or have a sea turtle wander up on to the beach, or to have sand sharks swimming by your feet. Fun stuff for a kid growing up in the early 1960’s. Occasionally the lifeguards would whistle everyone out of the water because of sharks, but that was not the norm. And Wednesday nights were special, because there were fireworks out over the ocean from a barge. Magical times courtesy of Playland. Today it’s not unusual to see whales and dolphins! There are kayakers and paddle-boarders that report sea turtles, sharks, and schools of skates swimming not too far out. Must be a sign of a healthier ocean. And in a sign of healthier skin, I try to limit my time at the beach. But this year is different, as I now have the opportunity to go down during the week when it is less crowded, and nothing like this past Sunday when it took 45 minutes to exit the peninsula because of the huge record crowds. One of the interesting things I have noticed this year, is the influx of terns, yes terns. What is a tern? Well, they look like a small seagull and have a black head, and they can fly really fast, make swift turns and dive into the water looking for food. You must have seen them too. There have been a lot of
Page 17
THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2015
them, which I consider unusual, because while they do make an appearance at the beach, it’s about as frequent as my trips. But this year is different; they have been here in numbers and have stayed. Perhaps they all have retired too? The National Audubon Society’s Field book claims that their numbers have been declining due to disruptions caused by humans. Maybe Sandy cleared a path for them to come back. We do have sea grass and dunes now, so for a bird it does look more appealing. Terns are very protective of their nests and they have been known to dive bomb toward humans. Thought I would mention that if you haven’t been to Breezy Point where that happens occasionally. Terns also have to live with seagulls, and Rockaway has a variety of those too. I especially like the black-faced Laughing Gulls with their cackling calls. There are Thayer gulls, Ring-billed gulls, Herring gulls, and the largest and most predatory of the gull family – the Great Black-backed gull. Those guys, according to the field guide, will prey on anything smaller than itself. You probably have seen them chasing other gulls from a fallen clamshell. Breezy has two birds you seldom see in Rockaway – the Oystercatcher and the Skimmer. They are both very distinctive with their red bills. Of course Riis Park is home to the Piping Plover, but that small, shy bird that warrants federal protection isn’t really much to look at. As summer winds down we will welcome the sandpipers to the shoreline – that is always a sign that summer is coming to an end, but we are many weeks away from their visit. For now, it’s the Terns turn, take a look, they are putting on a great show at the shoreline. Hopefully they make Rockaway their home going forward, andjudging by the crowds this weekend, it seems everyone else is! (Lou Pastina aka Lazer Lou is a Graybeard and member of The Grayriders band. Revisit Build it Back! By Hank Iori We are approaching the third anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. The storm was a horrendous event that impacted all residents in the Rockaways. The city was not prepared for a storm of this magnitude. No one imagined the damage inflicted on areas throughout the city. Combine the storm with the changing of the guard at City Hall and it took some time for disaster relief programs to begin to help. Build it Back was initiated by the City to help residents repair their homes after Hurricane Sandy. The program was clearly mismanaged when it first started. This caused many people that applied for the program to disengage. As of last April, the figures supplied by Build it Back indicated that 43 percent of those that applied walked away from the program. I commend Mayor Bill de Blasio for appointing Amy Peterson as the director of Build it Back in April of 2014. At that point the program was on life support. No one had a kind word to say about the program. Her focus was to turn the program around and see that people received services that would help them repair/rebuild their homes. The process has been slow, but is steadily moving in the right direction. Why Revisit Build it Back? Reason 1 Those folks that applied to Build it Back (BIB) and walked away from the program for various reasons should give the program a second chance. Especially if you never applied for an SBA loan and have receipts for work done on your home. Now BIB will not only deduct monies received from FEMA,
home insurance, and other outside dollars you may have received for repairs but will also give you 60 percent of out-of-pocket expenses you may have incurred. I’ve asked several individuals in the community to give BIB a second chance. They did and were pleased to report back that they did receive additional dollars based on their storm repair expenses. You must select your option by July 31st. Contact BIB at 212 615-8329. Email works too: housing@recovery. nyc.gov. Don’t miss the deadline date. Reason 2 Build it Back has developed a plan to help those individuals that have been negatively impacted because they applied for and were approved for an SBA loan. In the final calculations BIB makes for a grant to an applicant they are still forced to deduct the SBA loan. s &OR THOSE WHO RECEIVED 3"! DOL lars and spent the dollars BIB will now increase the reimbursement amount up to 100 percent of the value of reimbursable work above and beyond the deducted amount calculated that included the SBA loan. Contact BIB at 212 615-8329. E-mail works too: housing@recovery.nyc.gov. Don’t miss the deadline date of July 31st. s &OR THOSE WHO WERE APPROVED for an SBA loan but decided not to take it, the amount of the loan will be included in the grant calculation. A financial hardship waiver should be applied for to request that the SBA loan not be used in the grant calculations. Contact BIB at 212 615-8329. E-mail works too: housing@recovery.nyc.gov. Don’t miss the deadline date of July 31st. In the past a homeowner would receive 60 percent of the total out of pocket expenses. Under BIB’s
new procedures they can now receive up to 100 percent of the remaining out-of-pocket expenses. At this time the 100 percent reimbursement only applies to those negatively impacted by SBA. For example, after all the deductions are calculated by BIB you would be eligible for 60 percent of the remaining out-of-pocket expenses. So on $20,000 you would receive $12,000. The new percentage of reimbursement for those dealing with the SBA loan issue allows for up to a 100 percent return on the remaining out-of-pocket expenses. This means by simply completing the necessary form, using the example above you would get an additional $8,000. This is clearly a step in the right direction thanks to BIB’s efforts. The Stafford Act I mentioned in reason two that BIB is still mandated by federal law under the Stafford Act that SBA loans must be counted in the calculations as a deduction towards a grant. This flaw in the legislation has lead to unintended negative consequences for many people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. As I recommended in my article on May 7, I continue to recommend that it is time for Congress to review and revise the Stafford Act. No matter what party affiliation, the impact of the Stafford Act, with its built-in third rail and “Catch 22” mandates needs to be fixed. The same negative implications that New York is currently facing will occur in the future across the nation without refined adjustments made to this legislation. Formulating a plan that is timely and cost efficient in assisting disaster victims is essential. The Stafford Act is a move in the right direction but needs to be improved upon to more rapidly respond to disasters in a fair and equitable manner.
The Rockaway Times A possible ray of hope! Congressman Tom MacArthur, R-NJ, proposed a bill that, if passed, would correct the problem inherent in the Stafford Act causing SBA loans to be counted against grant calculations for disasters. The bill is H.R.2594 – Disaster Survivor Benefit Clarification Act. As of June 2, it has been referred for review to the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management. It is encouraging that the bill is receiving bipartisan approval. It is my understanding that BIB is supportive of this legislation. I have asked Senator Chuck Schumer’s staff to review this new legislation to see that it best serves the needs of disaster relief victims. It is my hope that it will. Last week at a hurricane taskforce meeting I attended at the Borough President’s office, BIB shared with us some updated data on the amount of dollars that have been paid out to homeowners. I’ve taken that data and submitted it back to BIB with two additional columns. The columns ask for information related to the SBA deductions from grant applications. BIB needs to make a request to SBA for the data to populate these columns. I am certain, once done, that it will point out the inherent unfairness and millions denied to homeowners built into the Stafford Act. This will provide a strong argument for making modifications to this legislation. As we have learned the wheels of government do not move swiftly. It is our job to see that they move in the right direction! (Hank Iori is President of the Belle Harbor Property Owner’s Association and a Board 14 Member).

Real Love Stories Have No Endings! Back in the 1940’s our nation, still reeling from the Great Depression, suddenly found itself in the midst of a World War. My father, Peter J. Mahon Sr., a young man from Jackson Heights, Queens, answered his country’s call and after serving in the European Theater with the U.S. Army’s Mountain Division in Italy, returned home and worked for a brief time with the Telephone Company before joining the New York City Police Department. At the same time, my mother, Margaret Theresa Kelly, known to her friends as “Peggy, was a young Irish lass from a small farm in County Galway, who decided to leave her native country and travel across the Atlantic to New York where she made her home in Woodside, Queens. Although the pretty colleen’s presence in the predominantly Irish enclave drew more than her fair share of suitors, fate decreed that she would chance upon a certain young police officer and soon “Pete and Peggy became an often seen couple in Woodside, dancing the evenings away in the Tower Ballroom on Roosevelt Avenue, at that time a favorite haunt of the newly landed first generation Irish. Their romance was such that it was mentioned in the local Irish newspaper, the Irish Echo. “Pete Mahon of Roosevelt Ave., Jackson Heights, is now a full-fledged member of New York’s Finest and looks like a magazine cover in his uniform. No wonder the girls sigh as Pete strides along the street but his smile is reserved for a pretty colleen from Galway who seems to have more than passing interest in this young cop. Both fate and the Irish Echo had it right as on April 24, 1949, Pete and Peggy walked down the aisle of St. Sebastian’s Church and stood side by side at the altar where they exchanged vows and became husband and wife. After their reception (at the Tower Ballroom
of course!) it was off to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon before returning to Woodside. Their wedding was the start of a grand adventure that continues today, some 66 years later, giving rise to three children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Back in October of 2003, after 54 years of marriage, Dad suffered a heart attack and passed away in an ambulance that was racing him to Elmhurst Hospital. I was with him at the time and his last words to me were “Tell your mother I love her! Mom was devastated with the loss of her lifelong love and best friend and although she was always surrounded by her family not a single day passed without her mentioning how much she missed him and longed to be with him again. Although Mom became enamored with our small community here in Broad Channel during her many visits here, she nevertheless refused to leave the Woodside home she had shared with Pete for so long. This past year as Mom celebrated her 97th birthday her health began to fail rapidly. Unfazed by her physical ailments, Mom was giving to saying “My bags are packed, I’m just waiting for the train to get to my station so I can be with your father again. The long awaited train finally entered Mom’s station on Friday, July 10 at 2:43 p.m. when, surrounded by family at home, her heart stopped and she closed her eyes for the last time. Those of us with her at the time saw the pain leave her face and the hint of a slight smile come across her lips as her final wish was granted and, at long last, she once again joined her love of some 66 years for eternity proving that real love stories have no endings! Checking Out Continued from page 11 when A&P bought us. Things changed from then on, Baskin said. “I was district manager for the company for many years. When it went into its first bankruptcy in 2010, I went back into the stores and gave up the other job. Baskin wasn’t surprised at the news of the closing, adding some explanation for A&P’s downfall. “One reason is the competitive nature of the business. Nowadays, with big outlets like Whole Foods, Fairway, online ordering and others taking away the business from conventional supermarkets, it had been a problem. Another reason is when A&P bought Pathmark
WALDBAUM’S CLASSIC
about six to eight years ago. They spent $1.2 billion on those stores and the economy went down and that’s when their downfall really started, Baskin said. If Stop & Shop takes over the current Rockaway Waldbaum’s location, it will be the second on the peninsula, with the other located just two miles away in Arverne. The Waldbaum’s in Howard Beach and Long Beach, as well as 22 other Walbaum’s, Pathmark’s and A&P locations are also part of the Stop & Shop takeover agreement. Acme is in an agreement to acquire 76 A&P stores and Keyfood will acquire another 19 locations.

Where Did the Fireflies Go? By Katie McFadden Have you seen them? I haven’t. Not since Hurricane Sandy. One of my favorite childhood hobbies was catching fireflies or “lightning bugs when their little lights filled the evening sky in late June/ early July. However, I haven’t seen any in three summers now, and I’m not alone. I took an informal poll on Facebook to ask other residents if they have seen any. Some agreed that they haven’t seen them since Sandy. Some said they have seen a few. Others chimed in that fireflies aren’t the only wildlife that hasn’t been around much since Sandy, like monarch butterflies and cicadas. Something happened to the fireflies since Sandy and curiosity lead to me finding out what. I reached out to some experts at Firefly.org and explained the situation after Sandy. Firefly researcher and Firefly.org founder, Ben Pfieffer, responded, saying, “I would say the reason you don’t have fireflies anymore is that all the larvae in the ground got killed by the
seawater that flooded the area. Generally fireflies are pretty tough, even as larvae that crawl on the ground. Extensive salt water flooding could have killed the populations. Despite the sad news, Pfieffer says there is hope that they’ll return and offered some advice on how to encourage their population. “They should come back but it could take many years. The best thing you can do is have a habitat that supports them. The larvae need food to survive such as snails, slugs, etc.. The firefly female adults like tilled soil or soil they can lay eggs that will provide best change for their offspring. So avoid any pesticides or chemicals in your lawn or area. Let some standing grass grow and replant trees, etc.. A few weeks after his reply, I spotted my first firefly in three years. Albeit, it was across the bridge at Aviator Sports in Brooklyn, I was overjoyed to see a good sign that the light hasn’t gone out. Hopefully their numbers will increase over the next few years and future generations can experience the joy of catching a firefly.

Pan American Air Service Born In Rockaway Beach?

THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2015
By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev
During the month of May in the year 1919, THE FIRST TRANS-ATLANTIC FLIGHT left Rockaway Naval Air Station (now Riis Park) and flew to Plymouth, England (via Newfoundland and the Azores). This American First greatly influenced a young naval aviator who firmly believed in the success of the United States Navy NCFlight Program. Flights over the ocean, the young aviator believed, were a safe proposition – not a gamble! The aviators name was Lt. Juan Terry Trippe, who years later founded the Pan American Airways Service. The vintage Pan American Seaplanes show today at their terminal in Miami, Florida had a 40 passenger capacity AND looked like the grand children of the famous Navy Curtiss Seaplanes of 1919. The photo postcard published in today’s Rockaway Times was recently purchased from a postcard show that I attended in Ontario, Canada. It was a delightful surprise day trip I took with my daughter, Katie and my Son-in-Law, Michael Terino, Jr. All sorts of bells and whistles went off in my head. Upon arriving home I did scan through my private notes and came up with
the following. Local newspaper reports stated in late 1927 - early 1928 that a Cuba/Miami plane had been built at Rockaway Naval Air Station and was delayed leaving on the flight south. In late January of 1928 the seaplane took off for Florida with a scheduled overnight stop at Moorehead, North Carolina. A halftone photo showed that this seaplane closely resembled the aircraft shown today. Further searching in my personal notes did not reveal any previous or follow-up mentions before or after the years stated. More research must be done on this historical event!!! Perhaps there is an airline history buff out there in Times Land Who Can Fill In The Blanks For Us, Aye? Maybe Gateway’s Floyd Bennet Field Staff can help or possibly the U.S. Navy??? In 1939, Pan American Clippers flew to Europe and the Orient, but W.W.II ended these flights!

Shore Garden Club Rockaway Blooming By Robin Shapiro
I am a member of the Shore Garden Club. We meet once a month, either at someone’s home or at a local restaurant. We discuss tips on plants, flowers, vegetables and usually have a guest presenter. This week the luncheon was at my house. We had a wonderful speaker who taught us about floral arrangements. I live on the east side of the
street, which I call the “sunny side of the street. I have five perennial gardens and I planted them all by myself! The key to happy plants is to find the perfect spot. Many plants come with directions- and whether they like sun or shade is the most important information to keeping them happy. Everyone says I have a green thumb, but the truth is you can
have a green thumb too when you use plants that thrive in our environment and in the right location. The Rockaway soil is based on sand, that’s why the hydrangeas grow so great here. Driving around the neighborhood, you see these plants in most gardens because they do so well. There are a few different kinds of hydrangeas; lace caps, oak leaf and Annabelle are a few. Almost all of them love sun! Another successful plant is the knockout rose. They come in a variety of colors - pink, red and yellow and bloom all summer long. They are disease and heat resistant, rebloom without deadheading and bloom all summer.
Nepeta, also known as “catnip, thrives in my gardens. They are green spikes with purple flowers. Supposedly cats love to roll around in the blooms, but I haven’t noticed any! When I rebuilt my front garden after the storm I used perennial blooming flowers such as hydrangeas, roses, lilies, coreopsis, blackeyed-susans, irises, cone flowers (echinacea) and lavender. I added a backdrop of evergreen bushes (euonymus) and hostas in the rear of the garden as a staple of color all year round. Look around! The gardens of Rockaway are in full bloom!

The Joy of Sound By Kathy Lord Last night Nacho Arimany gave a concert at Ocean Bliss Yoga. The room was filled, with over 50 people in attendance. you could hear a pin drop when Nacho started the concert by circling the rim of a bowl with a thick pestle. Then came the sounds of his beautiful voice, reaching higher and higher in tones. Was he chanting, humming? Was he singing in another language? It didn’t matter what it was, he was reaching everyone in the room with the healing power of sound. His eyes were closed and he continued to circle the rim of the bowl and sing from his heart, sounds from the depth of his soul, it was breathtaking. It’s a long story as to how we got Nacho to Ocean Bliss Yoga. That

is not the important thing when you’re limited to 500 words. The important thing is that through a series of almost magical events, this concert happened. Music is certainly the universal language. You can hear a song in another language and without knowing the meaning of the words, you can feel its effect on you. It might make you feel happy, or sad, or contemplative or maybe ready to dance; music has a power all it’s own. One of the things that Nacho said to the audience was that it’s the silence after the music that is what we sometimes long for. Then he played a piece on guitar which he composed called “Silence.” Exactly the point, how can you play a piece called “Silence?” Think about that and see where it leads you. Playing percussive pieces using
gourds immersed in water, using the rims of bowls, while his foot tapped on a tambourine, stopping all sound for a second, then starting again, it was captivating. After the concert, a few of us got to spend some time with Nacho to talk about his use of music with autistic children. He told us a story of a 9-yearold boy he was working with who came into the room where he was sitting and was just wild, jumping around, and mak-ing really loud sounds. Nacho said that he just started to hum and play a steady rhythm on the water drums, he just kept this sound going, and all of a sudden the boy just stood there, facing the wall, and started to hum a perfect third and then a perfect fifth to the note he was hearing. In other words, he was singing a perfect harmony note to the note that he was hearing. He spoke to us
about the sensitivity he sees in autistic children and how his music has helped them. He approaches them knowing that they are ok just the way they are. He told us “The problem is not the children, it’s the parents,” saying that they want their child to calm down and be “normal.” He said, “They will never be normal,” they are sensitive beings that respond to certain things in very special ways and it’s knowing and accepting this that is part of Nacho’s method of using sound for healing. Now and then in this journey of life, you come across someone you see as very special, someone who reminds you of the importance of listening, and sitting still. Someone who reminds you that you can break free of your mental limitations and be who you were meant to be without restriction. Nacho Arimany lives his dharma (right way of living). Last night was not only a concert on the “Joy of Sound” but it was also a concert to help us remember “The Joy of Life.” Thank you Nacho Arimany for bringing who you are to Rockaway. Fro-Yo Coming to Beach 109th Continued from page 9 here.” The ladies intended to open by Memorial Day weekend to get the most out of a full summer season, but unexpected obstacles have pushed the opening day back. However, they’re coming closer to enjoying the last licks of summer. About two weeks ago, the ladies invited talented local artist Geoff Rawling to work his magic on the interior and signage for the store. The inside looks like a frozen-beach wonder-
land, with waves donned with snowflakes and a surfboard sign featuring the store’s logo of a beach bucket filled with frozen yogurt. The frozen yogurt machines are installed. The seating and tables have come together. The outside façade looks welcoming. Now the ladies are just waiting for a few more finishing touches to come together, so they can give a lasting first-impression when they open their doors within the next few weeks. “We’ll be open as soon as construction is finished,” Morgan Shannon said.
CUOMO ANNOUNCES BREEZY ELEVATION STUDY
Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) &AX NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com
Breezy Point, one of the communities hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy, will be the subject of a statefunded elevation study according to Governor Andrew Cuomo. In addition, the governor signed a two-year extension on a bill that prevents bureaucratic processes from getting in the way of Breezy Point residents’ quest to rebuild their homes in the aftermath of the storm. “I would love to be able to say to you that Sandy was one in a million and it’s never going to happen again. The problem is, I don’t believe that,” Cuomo said. “We are seeing weather patterns we have never seen before…I don’t care what you call it, but let’s prepare
for it.” With the state continuing to help strengthen the shoreline with dunes, seawalls, and other methods, the study will investigate what steps would be necessary to ensure that a repeat of Sandy’s devastation would not happen in Breezy Point. The community lost over 100 homes due to the storm and a destructive fire. The legislation the governor extended will allow Breezy homeowners to bypass the 18-month review process established by the city’s Board of Standards and Appeals. “Nobody in Breezy Point has to worry about the red tape,” Governor Cuomo said.
KEARNEY TO OFFER FREE SAT PREP FOR ALL JUNIORS Bishop Kearney High School is partnering with CollegeSpring to offer free SAT preparation and college mentoring resources for our entire junior class. Students in CollegeSpring’s programs expand their college options through significant SAT score increases; they also gain the college knowledge they need to put scores into action and apply to colleges and universities that will be a good fit. Students will participate in weekly SAT and college-readiness classes taught by Kearney teachers throughout the school year. During spring semester, students will also participate in weekly smallgroup tutoring and mentoring sessions led by current college students. Throughout the year they will also take multiple practice SAT exams to gain familiarity with the test. CollegeSpring’s curriculum was developed to prepare students
for the recently revised SAT, which students will take in the spring.

John Lepore Rockaway’s Good Hands Guy For More Than 25 Years By Sarah Boyle After meeting Allstate agent John Lepore, the meaning behind the catchphrase “You’re in good hands,” of an often seen commercial comes to life. Allstate was established in Rockaway in 1989, and quickly gained a reputation for its determination and efficiency. Despite corporate headquarters’ hesitation, Lepore fought for Allstate in Rockaway, moving the insurance business to its new location with a “why not Rockaway?” attitude. Lepore saw the positive aspects of Rockaway, and wanted to show others what was so great about the peninsula. Customers know they are “in good hands” because Lepore fought for his location on Beach Channel Drive, and understood that although small, this tight-knit community in Rockaway needed a quality insurance representative. “It’s a great place, it always has been a great place to live, to have a business and raise a family,” Lepore says. He put his thoughts to deeds as he moved to Rockaway 22 years ago, in spite of those who
questioned why he would want to live where he worked. In Rockaway, living where you work has proven to be common. The sense of community has helped businesses prosper rather than fail. Community members provide business, camaraderie, and support for one another in business and throughout their daily lives. “I think that keeps you honest, if you live where you work you’re going to go 110 percent and make sure people know you’re doing the right thing, it’s the best for everybody,” said Lepore. This is what attracted Lepore to the Rockaways, pushed him to fight for insurance representation on the peninsula, and eventually lead to his move here. The success the agency had is proof that Lepore was right all along. The tight-knit community that Rockaway has evolved into has proven advantageous for Allstate. Living on a peninsula, knowing local families becomes necessary for business. Lepore has learned that this knowledge allows the insur-
ance agency to “tailor what you do to the needs of the people.” Selling insurance is about relationships. Rockaway has been the perfect incubator for those sales. Rockaway’s physical isolation has proven to be “a twin-edged sword,” as Lepore says. Being unique has also made them vulnerable. The further away location has brought members of the community close together and created a strong support system, but has made access to the city more difficult. Thoughts of heavy traffic and longer travel often deter people from traveling to the peninsula, and may seek business elsewhere. However, for those that have looked to Allstate Rockaway Park, they have a familiar face to turn to when things go wrong. The business of an insurance company is to
take care of people who have had losses, whether it be their family, home or car. After Sandy it seemed protection might be out of reach. Nevertheless, Allstate reassured its customers, and the community, that they were “in good hands.” John Lepore rented a small RV and moved Allstate to the streets, taking care of the many people in need. The insurance agency eventually graduated from the RV as an attorney’s office took them in, once more showing the support of the Rockaway community. With Allstate Rockaway Park, there is more than insurance, there is a business that truly cares about the inhabitants of the community. (Sarah Boyle will be entering her sophomore year at Lehigh University in the fall).

technology advancing at a furious rate. Wouldn’t it be nice if some of that rubbed off on our roads? I’m not talking about intelligent traffic lights but the roads themselves. Let’s face it. Asphalt is everywhere. First adopted by NYC in 1896 in place of brick, granite and woodblock, it initially came with a 15year warranty on workmanship and materials. Now we’re lucky to get 15 months out of it before it starts falling apart. But maybe there’s cause for hope. People around the world are coming up with some clever ideas that might finally give us better roads that will be safer, more energy efficient and require less maintenance. In Holland, forward thinkers are developing designs including glowin-the-dark road markings, interactive streetlights, battery-charging e-lanes, illuminated foul-weather warnings and other innovations. Here’s a look at some “street stuff” happening around the globe…
bedded wireless technology called iPavement that can provide both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to pedestrians and motorists passing overhead.
Idea #2 – Temperature Sensitive Warnings
When temperatures fall below freezing, road surfaces are prone to become slippery. A temperaturesensitive ingredient in this paint responds to cold by lighting up large images of snowflakes in phosphorescent white. This alerts drivers (or perhaps cars directly) of the hazardous condition so they can adjust their driving style accordingly.
Bring a chair, towel or blanket and head down with the family to different beach locations each week for a different film. Each movie starts after sundown, meaning about 8:45 p.m. this week, until it starts getting darker earlier, so about 8 p.m. later in the summer. Each movie is sponsored by a different local business or organization, meaning they’re free for the community. The first film of the series will be Ferris Bueller’s Day off at Beach 129th Street on Thursday, July 23. This film is sponsored by Pico, which will be holding special deals at the restaurant, before the film starts. Pico will offer 10 percent off dinner or takeout from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. to those who mention that night’s film. They’ll also have an extended Happy Hour until 8 p.m.
Idea #4 - Solar Powered The next film will be Fantastic Mr. Fox on Beach 106th Street on ThursCharging Stations day, July 30. This film is sponsored by Caracas, the concession where Solar Roadway of Sandpoint, ID, is developing a road design that integrates electricity-generating photovoltaic cells. In this scenario our roads can become continuous ribbons of solar panels that can generate enough electricity to recharge electric cars at rest stops and parking lots along the way.
near where the movie will be shown.
Here’s the rest of the lineup for the summer:
Thursday, July 30 - Fantastic Mr. Fox Friday, August 7-Jurassic Park- Beach 87th Street Friday, August 14- Guardians of the Galaxy- Beach 73rd Street Monday, August 17- Jaws- Beach 68th Street Idea #4 – Battery Charging Friday, August 21- Maleficent- Beach 112th Street Highway Lanes Several companies are working Thursday, August 27- Despicable Me- Beach 97th Street on technology that takes the waiting out of charging. Underground in- Friday, September 4- Grand Budapest Hotel- Beach 121st Street duction coils buried in special lanes will be able to charge our batterypowered cars while in motion!
Idea #1 – Light Absorbing Idea #6 - Electric Vehicles Paint without the Batteries Luminescent green road markings painted on the road may make street lighting redundant. Not only can this technology save lighting costs, but also increase safety by improving visibility on roads that have no lights at all. The key is a new photo-luminescent material painted on roads. These markings are charged by sunlight during the day and by headlights through the night.

The German firm Siemens has installed overhead electric cables over sections of the Autobahn (think street cars in San Francisco). The idea here is that hybrid diesel electric freight trucks can automatically switch to electric mode when they detect and attach to the overhead grid. Ongoing testing is trying to determine if the cost of building, maintaining and powering these special lanes for long-distance, zero-carbon transportation is more efficient than other energy saving systems. Next week we’ll explore another batch of cool ideas that may change the look and functionality of the roads we drive including solar powered smart-roads and streets made of plastic. Raffle to Help a Marine The Sons and Daughters of America are running a raffle to raise money for a Track Chair for a Wounded Warrior Marine. The money raised will be donated to “The Independence Fund” to purchase the state-of-the-art wheelchair in memory of LCPL Tom Rorke of Breezy Point, who died in a car accident earlier this year. The Track Chair will change the life of the recipient. It will offer the Marine greater mobility, allowing them to take a more active role in their life. The Graybeards, which often contributes to the Sons and Daughters of America, is assisting with the raffle. The raffle is for cash prizes of $5,000 for a first place winner or $2,500 for two second place winners. Tickets are $100 each and can be purchased directly. How-

ever, the Graybeards are willing to let people share a ticket, based on what you can donate. So if you can only donate $50, you’ll be paired with someone else who can make a $50 donation. Donations can be made at the Graybeards office (129-04 Newport Ave. Rockaway, NY 11694). Make any check out to “Sons and Daughters of America.” When dropping off a donation, include your e-mail address, so you can be sent a copy of the ticket you are sharing. The Track Chair costs $16,000 and the raffle is expected to raise $10,000, leaving a $6,000 gap. If anyone has any ideas on how to raise the remaining money, or if anyone is willing to make a direct donation, contact Jim Mullen of the Graybeards at jimmyspeedbump@aol.com.

Community Comes Through Continued from page 8 and bartending under the tent. Manhattan Beer and Budweiser donated all of the beer, while The Wharf and the Leckie family, who are always supportive of their nephew Dennis and niece Karine, donated the wine. The RIBS, Liz Smith Breslin and Jeanne Jamin were very generous in helping with the extremely successful raffles. The entire Cook family was there and overwhelmed and beyond appreciative and humbled by the love and support shown to them by friends, family and Rockaway.
While the event ended at 11 p.m. Saturday night it is easy to see the support and love for Karine and her family will continue for as long as needed. The entire Rockaway Community is on Karine’s team and better for it. As Michael Jordan said, “My attitude is that if you push me towards a weakness, I will turn that weakness into a strength. Karine’s strength is inspiring and the love shown by her family is definitely something worthy of those high school sweethearts who belong on the big screen and who definitely deserve their happily ever after.
Yoga On The Beach By Sheneca Sharpe As a person willing to try new things, especially this summer before I leave for college, I decided to try yoga on the beach! Helen Kilgallen, yoga instructor for Elaine’s Dance School and columnist right here at the Rockaway Times for “Be Well, Be Happy, has been hosting Yoga on the Beach in Rockaway for six years now. Also, Kilgallen has been practicing yoga for more than 10 years. Kilgallen believes yoga isn’t for a certain group of people; it’s for everybody who is interested or curious about the practice. Kilgallen plans on teaching yoga until she’s 100 years old. She has a true love for the practice and wants to spread that throughout the community. “My intention is to introduce yoga and show the community all the benefits it offers, she said. Walking towards Beach 108th, I noticed people with their yoga mats or blankets who seemed excited to relax on the beach early in the morning. As someone who isn’t a morning person, I’m not gonna lie, I wasn’t one of those excited people. But when I finally got on the beach, all I saw was a crowd of yoga mats and smiles. Lets just say the positivity was so contagious, I turned into a morning person that day. I was nervous that I would stick out like a sore thumb because of the fact that I’m inexperienced,
but I found out that I wasn’t the only new kid in the group, which made it more comfortable. Another worry I had was if this was going to be a beginner’s class or intermediate one. Helen assured me that this was a beginner’s class, not to worry and if I don’t get something it’s alright, it’s all about relaxing. So I treated the class like a marathon and less of a sprint, focusing on relaxing and less on if I got the pose correct, making it into a more fun, relaxing experience. Even though this was my first yoga class, I imagine being on the beach is so much better than in a stuffy studio. I recommend this class to everybody! Especially to those who are stressed out from work or personal issues. The sound of the waves and focusing on breathing really made me forget about any issues I was dealing with. Helen Kilgallen offers yoga on the beach every Saturday on Beach 108th at 8 in the morning. Oh, one more thing I failed to mention, it’s FREE! All you need to do is bring a yoga mat, towel, or blanket and a positive mind. If you do have and questions or concerns, you can email Helen at Rockawayhelen@ aol.com or you can call at (646) 492-4455. (Sheneca Sharpe is a graduate of Rockaway Park High School and will be attending Fredonia-SUNY in the fall).

DIRT Maximizing the Square Footage in Your Garden by Antoinette DeMetropolis Have you ever found yourself inundated with vegetables in midsummer, to the point of handing them out to strangers walking by, and then have nothing to harvest for the rest of the season? Planning and executing a garden that produces a healthy harvest throughout the entire growing season can be one of the biggest
By Artie Wallace This week we’re going to talk about paint. No, not painting, we will cover that at another time. Today, we will cover a little about different types and brands of paint. First off, there are a lot of people who feel the brand of paint makes all the difference. The fact of the matter is a lot of brands don’t make their own paint. When you buy brand X paint, it can be made by the same company that makes brand Y. And wherever the name brand on the label chooses to buy their paint from can change without you knowing. So one brand can be great now, but in a year that same brand can be buying their stock from a totally different manufacturer. Now lets look at types of paint. When I started in this business over 30 years ago, I was taught flat paint was for ceilings, semi-gloss was for doors, and trim and walls were painted with eggshell or flat paint. If you remember those rules, you’re probably as old as me. These days, for my customers, I recommend going by a new rule of paint. I recommend semigloss on ceilings. Yes, flat hides a

challenges a gardener faces. Combine that with the lack of space we have in our city plots and you are faced with a real dilemma. Successful farmers use succession planting to maximize yields and spread out harvests throughout the season. I found that implementing this in my own garden has helped me produce more vegetables while minimizing the amount of waste I generate. My
lot of sins, but after a years worth of cooking, you can clean a ceiling painted with semi-gloss. Semigloss also reflects light, which means less light needed in the space (also less electric used). For doors and trim, I like to use semigloss or high gloss. It gives a nice finish and lasts with the high traffic. For walls, if you prefer to go with less of a shine you can use satin or eggshell paint, but semigloss is still at the top of my list. As you read, I go against the old school rules when it comes to types of paint and I am sure a lot of my readers may disagree with my preference of semi-gloss for most areas. But as a rule of thumb, when a customer calls someone like me in to paint, I think a year later they will be calling me for something else in the house, not to repaint what they paid to have done a year prior because it is marked up and/or can’t be cleaned anymore. Semi-gloss can make that difference. Is there a project you would like me to cover, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com and I would be happy to include it in a future article.
favorite crops to grow this way are lettuces, radishes, and carrots because of their shorter maturity times. In Rockaway, I can grow lettuce, spinach, arugula and some other spring crops all summer long with good success as long as I plant them in an area that gets shade for about half of the day, preferably the afternoon on. I direct sow two rows of each crop into the soil every two weeks. As I harvest, I just drop more seeds of that vegetable in the same spot. I love eating salad and this provides me with a good salad base all summer long. As I put together my salads, I can add in tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and other long season crops as they become available. Succession planting doesn’t necessarily have to be with the same crop you harvested. As you pull out your summer plants (e.g., cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant)
you can plant fall crops in their place (e.g., kale, collards, winter squash, peas, beets). Mid-July through September is a great time to start fall planting, depending on the vegetable you want to grow. If you are a planner and like to be prepared, there are two resources I have found to be extremely helpful for me. Growveg. com is an online garden planner that is extremely easy to use; and All New Square Foot Gardening, Second Edition by Mel Bartholomew is a book that I have found to be helpful in explaining how to maximize space within my garden. Mid-summer may be a tough time to plan this year’s garden so I suggest at this point you experiment and just wing it. Don’t ever be afraid to fail in your garden, especially with seeds. No one would even know! Happy growing!

RWA Hosts Bike Bonanza Last Saturday, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance hosted the annual Queens Bike Bonanza and Weekend Walk event in partnership with the NYC DOT, Recycle A Bicycle, and Bike NY on Rockaway Freeway and Beach 59th St. The event drew over 500 people on a day that started out looking like it would be rained out. But the overpass offered protection from the rain and thunderstorms that morning as crews came to set up tables. By 11:30 the sky cleared and locals came out to take part in learn to ride lessons, the bike swap and free helmet giveaways. There are not that many open spaces in the eastern end of the Rockaways that are as easily ac-
cessible to public transit where events like this can take place. Yet over 400 people were fit for bike helmets by DOT in the 3 hours the event took place and hundreds of smiling faces were clearly visible as families came out to teach their children to learn to ride bicycles on an open roadway. The event is part of a series of community events Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is hosting this summer to get residents more aware of safety on our streets and make better use of neglected parts of the underpass for community gatherings. Stay tuned for more community events this summerwww.rwalliance.org

Diary Of A Fat Man The Journey Continues By Bruce Bernfeld
It has been difficult not talking about food as I said I wanted to do in an earlier column. While I am trying to make eating not a major part of my life, talking about it has become a major part. I will talk about it to everyone who will listen. I guess those numbers of listeners will start dwindling soon, if they haven’t already started to decline. So if you see me walking down 129th and you don’t want to talk about protein powder or my new Vitamix, cross the street, I won’t be insulted. And I won’t have to experience that glazed look in your eyes. Now, I didn’t say anything about WRITING about food so you all better pay attention and no turning the page. I realized that the past few weeks I may have been preach-
ing a bit to much on the science of nutrition and the benefits of eating healthy and not describing too much about my journey...in fact the title of this column is Diary of a Fat Man, and not Dr. Bruce Shows You The Right Way To Live A Healthier Life! So here goes: 1. When I sit down to a lunch of a few turkey slices, a tomato, some green broccoli and pieces of watermelon on one plate and I look at it and say to Eileen: “This looks better than a piece of pie topped with ice cream,” am I being totally honest? I think so, but I’m not certain. 2. General advice is to only weigh yourself once a week. I weigh myself once every three hours. I love to see the number dropping even if it is only two-tenths of a pound. I have learned to accept plateaus as part of the journey.
3. People have been very, very supportive. They walk by my house and shout encouragement to me. Others say they are joining me on the journey with the help of this column. And when I meet someone who is as obsessively attached to the Vitamix blender as I am, we can talk for hours. I even received this message of great advice from former Rockaway resident Gary Bart, who I haven’t seen or talked to in over 50 years! “ Bernie (A lot of people call me Bernie): A diet is something you go on to eventually go off of...it treats your weight as though the weight is the problem...that’s not the problem…it’s the symptom... the problem is your relationship with food... and how you are going to change it permanently... in such a way that you can live with better choices and feel satisfied. Diets last only so long and then its back to old habits. You also need to find satisfaction in other things other than food. Good luck. Btw (you make your own.)” (That’s why I have been writing
Let US know what YOU think. Love Us? Like Us? Hate Us? We want to Know!
about not calling it a “diet.”) 4. A “Big and Tall Man” catalog came in the mail today. I started to thumb through it, but after two pages I said, “Hey, not for me!” and threw it into the recycle pile. That made me feel pretty good. On a similar note, I’m starting to go through and even wear some clothing of mine that didn’t fit a couple of months ago! 5. Hearing the Mr. Softee truck music doesn’t have me jumping up and down yelling “Ice cream man! Ice cream man!” anymore. That’s a BIG step! 6. Tip of the hat to all of this column’s followers from Silver Gull!! Thanks for the kind words. Did I mention that I haven’t felt better in years? This week’s results : June 9 288lbs June 15. 282 June 22. 280 June 29. 280 July 6. 275 July 14 272 July 21 266

AHOY ROCKAWAY ! By Matt Whalen
*Water Temperature: 74*F Entrance to NY Harbor. (15 N.M. S.E. of Breezy Point) This weekend’s weather was another HOT one on Sunday. Saturday had cooler temperatures and was a bit more enjoyable. It’s July, it’s HOT (it’s supposed to be) and summer is sizzling in the Rockaway area. Backyard grilling, flip flops, sand, and frozen drinks are the summer time norm. If you remember last week’s column, we had a picture (courtesy of Big Ron’s bait and tackle) of a large striped bass weighing in at just over 46 pounds caught by angler Leron. That BIG catch was followed up by another large striped bass weighing in at 52.5 POUNDS- 50 INCHES caught off of Rockaway Beach. You thought that we were kidding when we said that. There are big game fish just waiting for you off of Rockaway. They are here, so get out there. It’s the Atlantic Ocean so remember, anything goes, anything can happen. Large game fish showing up quickly are not uncommon, especially in an area that you’d never think that big game fish would be making their presence known, like the bay. If you see large schools of bunker (bait
fish) moving into the bay slowly from the ocean (or bunker schools jumping out of the water quickly in the back bay or ocean), you can bet that “something wicked this way comes!” Larger predator fish such as big “chopper” bluefish (or hopefully striped bass) are chasing down and feeding on the bunker. Remember, striped bass like to feed at dusk, night and at dawn. They are quiet hunters. Bluefish will feed during the day or night, and they’re NOT shy about it. Look for the loud seagulls eating leftover bunker parts that float to the surface during the “Blitz” or “Boil” (snapping blue fish jaws). These “Blitzes” can show up suddenly and hang around for a while, or they can disappear in less than a minute leaving YOU with an open jaw and the thought of “What just happened?” If you are trying to catch striped bass, remember that they often like to hide and hunt in and around “structures,” (bridges, piers, jetties, and docks) at dusk, night and dawn. Your local tackle shop can advise you of the best bait (or lure) to use. These fish like to feed on different bait fish at different times of the year, so you’ll want to use a bait (or lure) that matches what they are feeding
on at the moment. We checked in with our local stations and here’s what they had to report. Bernie Matzen of Oceanside: Bern got out on the water in his new boat on Sunday to do some fluke fishing and reports many shorts being taken (and put back into the bay). Bernie tried his luck fishing the tide (between 10:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M.). The best Bernie caught all day was only 16 inches long (under-sized). Bernie reported heavy boat traffic east and west of the Atlantic Beach bridge, as well as it being very HOT out, contributing to the poor fishing conditions. He also reported many sea robins being very small. Tom’s Wave service station, bait & tackle in Rockaway Park: We called Tom and he reported that it has been a bit of a slow week for fluke (typical for mid-July). Tom reports about one out of six fluke being taken as a keeper. Tom also mentioned that recently he’s noticed that the tides are a bit off (very low and very high tides occurring). This accompanied by the mid-July doldrums of hot weather may be the reason that the fluke fishing has slowed down slightly. Well that’s it anglers, until next week.
Riveting!
Women’s Pro Hockey Coming To Aviator By Michael Leboff Professional hockey is coming to Aviator Sports and Events Center this Fall. The New York Riveters, one of the four founding teams of the new National Women’s Hockey League, are set to open play in October and will call the facility at Floyd Bennett Field home. The NWHL was founded by former Northeastern University hockey player Dani Rylan last Spring. There are three other teams that will join the Riveters for the league’s inaugural season -- the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, and Connecticut Whale. The season will last from October until April with each team playing 18 games - 9 at home and 9 on the road. Rylan thinks that Aviator Sports will provide New York with a perfect home ice advantage. “It’s a beautiful facility and has the right capacity,” she said. “And we will be able to attract families from all over Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island. Rylan, who will also serve as the general manager of the Riveters, said that the support from the hockey community has been overwhelming in the lead up to the season. “We leaned heavily on the hockey community,” she said. “The NHL has been very supportive from the beginning. They support women’s hockey from the grassroots level all the way up.” Perhaps nobody knows the NHL’s effect at the grassroots level better than Rylan, who first fell in love with the sport when the league expanded into her hometown of Tampa Bay in 1992. After learning to play in Florida, Ry-
lan eventually moved to a boarding school in Massachusetts before ultimately winding up with Northeastern. The timing of the league’s launch couldn’t be much better. This summer the United States Women’s National Soccer Team captivated the country’s attention on their way to winning the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. “Women’s sports have evolved so much in the last decade, it’s the right time and place for women’s professional sports to grow here,” Rylan said. “Young boys that play hockey all dream of someday playing in the pros. We want to give young girls that same dream.” Every NWHL will be streamed on the NWHL website and Rylan believes that any hockey purist will find the women’s game very satisfying. While it may lack the contact and physicality of the men’s game, it has plenty of fluidity and speed. “A real student of the sport appreciates the women’s style of play, it’s a pure form of hockey. These women are smart and skilled. Real hockey fans will enjoy it.” The NWHL isn’t the only women’s league in North America. The Canadian Women’s Hockey League, which is made up of four teams in Canada and one in Boston, was founded in 2009. The most glaring difference between the two leagues is that the NWHL will pay its players, something the CWHL does not do. The Riveters will kick off the first-ever NWHL season against the Connecticut Whale in Stamford, CT on October 11th at 1:30 p.m. Their home opener will take place on the following Saturday, October 18th, against Boston at 7:00 p.m.

Rockaway Lives! Major Boys Team Reach The Sectional Finals Rockaway Little League’s Major Boys All-Star team rallied to defeat Throggs Neck Little League 10-8 Monday night to keep their Little League World Series dreams alive and earn a spot in the New York State Section Three South finals. A day earlier, Rockaway eliminated Kingsbridge Little League (KLL) in a nine-inning thriller. On Monday, Rockaway found itself in an 8-3 hole midway through their loser’s bracket game in the Bronx. Pitcher Ian Byrne shut down Throggs Neck the rest of the way, giving his mates a chance to claw their way back. Trailing 8-5, Philly Benoit led off top of the sixth with a solo home run. The ensuing rally forged the 10-8 final. Rockaway Little League (RLL), the District 27 champion, began the Section Three tournament against the always-formidable Great Kills Little League from Staten Island. RLL won the coin flip to be home team but things went downhill after that. Great Kills stormed out to 6-0 lead before RLL even came to bat. The Staten Island team coasted to a shutout win. Dropped to the loser’s bracket, RLL traveled to Manhattan to take on KLL in a win-or-go-home game. RLL had bad visions of the game being a repeat of the previous day’s loss as starting pitcher Billy Reyes walked the leadoff batter and then gave up a two-run homer to the next batter. RLL trailed 3-0 out of the gate. However, Sunday was a different day and RLL was a different team. Manager Marty McManus had the boys worked up to do whatever it took to win despite any difficulties they might face. James Resker
led off with a walk for RLL. Daniel Green reached on an error. Tom Resker and James Agoglia walked to force in a run. Philly Benoit stroked a two-out single up the middle to drive in two and tie the game. From there Reyes took control and shut down the KLL lineup for the rest of the game. After allowing the first three KLL batters to reach base and score, Reyes shut them out through the fifth inning on nine ground ball outs, six strikeouts, and one flyout while giving up only one hit and one walk and not allowing either runner to advance past first. He was
aided by flawless play from third baseman Agoglia, shortstop Ian Byrne, second baseman Benoit and first baseman Mike McManus as well as superb game calling from catcher Tom Resker. The only hard hit ball during that span was when center fielder Green went back to the fence to haul in the last out in the 5th. RLL meanwhile was putting together threats every inning but were unable to break the tie. Rockaway finally broke through in the fifth. KLL’s relief pitcher started strong as he struck out the first two batters but he then issued consecutive walks to Matty McDonagh, Benoit and Sebastiano to load the bases. He was replaced with a new pitcher who walked McManus to force in the goahead run. Kingsbridge did not wilt, however, stroking a double and single in its last licks to tie the game and force extra innings. Both teams’ pitchers posted strong seventh and eighth innings. The ninth inning started with a bang as the KLL leadoff batter lifted a high fly to deep right
for a triple. The next batter tested right fielder Reyes again as he hit a fly to right-center. The runner on third tagged as Reyes caught the ball and took off for home. Reyes threw a strike to Tom Resker at the plate as the throw beat the runner home by at least 10 feet. That had the feel of a game-changing play. A Benoit strike out ended the top of the ninth. As is so often the case, the player who just made a spectacular play in the field led off the next at bat. Reyes stepped up for Rockaway and lined a ball into the gap for a leadoff double. Ian Byrne walked and Benoit then faked a bunt to draw in the infielders as Reyes and Byrne stole third base and second base, respectively. Benoit then hit a comebacker to the mound but reached safely as the pitcher concentrated on holding Reyes at third. Sebastiano ended the drama when he lined a solid hit past the right fielder to score Reyes with the winning run. Rockaway earned another shot at Great Kills in the Section Three South finals. RLL must defeat the Staten Island boys twice to advance. (Those games were to take place earlier this week after this paper’s deadline.) The sectional contests are followed by the New York State tournament, the MidAtlantic championships and, finally, the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
