RBVL Crowns 10 Champions
By Joe McGivney On Saturday, volleyballs flew all day on the sands of Riis Park as contestant’s fought for the fabled winner’s sweatshirts in the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League playoffs. The weather was an ideal 84 degrees, sunny and virtually windless and the quality of play seemed to match the quality of the playing conditions. Ten different division champions were crowned by day’s end and the mood was both festive and bittersweet as the 2015 season ended and the joy of another terrific year was offset by the sadness that many friends would go their separate ways over the next 10 months, not seeing each other quite as regularly anymore. More than a few people were weepy! Nets were available at 9:30 AM and a Rockaway miracle occurred – everyone showed up on time and set up the courts promptly, for the fifth year in a row. At 10:30 AM, players were bumping, setting and spiking (and flubbing, fanning and whiffing) in heated playoff action. People anticipate each and every Wednesday evening when they could put aside real life for a few hours of volleyball, a couple of cold beverages and an hour or two on the dance floor. Saturday’s tournament took that spirit to the highest level. The people lucky enough to be in the RBVL know it doesn’t get any better than that. Commissioner Patty Moule outdid herself again although she selflessly deflected credit to her committee of veterans Rocky, Steve, John and Joe, Colleen, Mike, Liz and Theresa for a job well done. (And don’t forget retiree Denise still helping behind the scenes.) Thank you all for making the season a great success and making Saturday one of the RBVL’s most spectacular playoff days ever. Your camaraderie and friendship elevate the league to heights no other league enjoys. As always, the exciting games, food (Kudos for the delicious
sandwiches and wraps) and music help but you are what make the day so special. The four higher seeds each won their first round matches in the Ocean Division but Gatemate. com just nosed out Sullivan and Galleshaw 20, 19 and 19 to advance. Round 2 action saw Freedhand’s dominate rival West End Tents 3-0 and Gatemate beating Hyper Athletics 3-1 to set up a rematch of last year’s championship. The caliber of play was as high as it has ever been and the games seesawed back and forth until Gatemate won 21-19 in the 5th set to take home the coveted championship sweatshirt. The Ocean Breeze Division was full of first round upsets as lower seeds Bella Casa, Jameson’s and Federation all eliminated higher seed. Only top seed JG Electric held serve. JG stayed hot and entered the final without losing even a single game to face the Federation who beat longtime rival Jameson’s 3-1. The title match was thrilling and was finally decided in the fifth set with a JG 21-12 victory. The Wave Division went according to form, placing the top two teams in the championship but Kobeyaki Got Kills was too strong for the Cabana, NYC and swept the finals 3-0 and the Continued on page 40

Project Seeks to Clean Rockaway’s Beach
In an effort to keep Rockaway’s shores clean and pristine, an event will be held this weekend to help clean up the beach. Barefoot Wine’s Beach Rescue Project is an initiative of the Surfrider Foundation, now in its ninth year, which targets American beaches and coastal areas for annual cleanup. This year the project visited 12 beaches from California to New York, with a planned capstone event at Beach 67 St. this Saturday, August 15, beginning at 11:00 a.m. It is anticipated that up to 400 volunteers will participate in the clean-up. Conduit Concern: Rally to Be Held to Improve Dangerous Street In Queens Rockaway residents know full well the perils of traveling by foot or bike in New York City. Inconsiderate drivers often ignore or recklessly disregard their non-vehicular peers on the road. One of the primary culprits in Queens is the Conduit Median, just west of Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach/Ozone Park. To help combat this and raise awareness to city officials about the dangers for pedestrians and bikers in this area, Southern Queens Greenway, an advocacy group dedicated to improving pedestrian and cycling access between East Brooklyn and Southern Queens, will be holding the Walk the Conduit Rally on Saturday, August 15. The 3.5-mile walk will head north, beginning at the Vito Locascio ball field at Cross Bay Boulevard and 149th Avenue and ending at the entrance of Highland Park. Along the way, participants will survey existing conditions and brainstorm solutions for transforming the dangerous Conduit Median into a safe and pedestrian-friendly roadway. If you are interested in learning more about Southern Queens Greenway, please visit southqueensgreenway. com for the event details.

***** The weather forecast looks good for a Mass On the Beach. This Sunday at 10 am St. Francis de Sales and Fr. Jim Cunningham will be conducting Mass on the beach at Beach 129th. All are welcome. Bring a beach chair. ***** Another IRS scam is making the rounds. People have been getting robocalls – an electronic voice – with the message that the “IRS is filing a lawsuit against you. Please call immedi-
ately. Don’t call. It’s just a scamming attempt to get your personal information, which they’ll use for nefarious purposes. The IRS doesn’t make such calls. If you find yourself talking to someone who says they’re with the IRS or any other agency and they ask for personal info, tell them to put it in writing. ***** Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder – the man who is seen everywhere (except on our Front Page) somehow managed to bike ride 180 miles in just two days for charity last week. The Bike4Chai event, which winds its way through three states, raises money for seriously ill children so that they can enjoy real summer experiences. ***** We’re predicting a Whalemina (or reasonable facsimile) visit this weekend. Fans of the fabled whale might make a point of visiting the Beach 97th Street concessions between 12-6 on Saturday, August 15. ***** Have you been down on the farm? Edgemere Farm hosts weekly dinners on Thursdays from 6-9 pm featuring local chefs and locally grown fare. This fun and community-style dinner brings together strangers and friends alike for a laid back evening of farmfresh dining. Edgemere Farm is located at 385 Beach 45th Street. You can find out more at EdgemereFarm.org ***** A Dunkin’ Donuts will be opening in the Mott Avenue – Far Rockaway Shopping Center, the first new store in many years. The shopping center, owned by Rita Stark, has long been more than an eyesore. It’s a huge property that stood in the way of economic development in the area. We think this is great news and have our fingers crossed. Oh, and the guy who owns the Dunkin’ Donuts? He’s the same guy who owns six others in Rockaway! ***** It’s never too early to plan for a parade. The 2015 Rockaway Bike Parade is set for Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 11 AM - 1 PM. It’s the fifth annual and we’ll have more details in the next few weeks.

GRIPES of Wrath. We get lots of gripes. A lot of times there are items that don’t quite make a story or fall short of a letter to the editor. Dogs are allowed by their owners to crap on the median in Belle Harbor. Some people don’t like the Mister Softee music. PEP officers using garbage cans as beach chairs. PEP officers in general. Traffic cones on Beach Channel Drive that appear when no work is being done. Send your gripes to Mail@RockawayTimes. com . When we get enough gripes we’ll print them in a column. ***** A handful of people (mostly family members) were asking about Boyleing Points, which was missing from last week’s issue (and this week’s, too). The column will resume on some sort of regular basis after Labor Day. Boyle’s last column was about cruising and coasting in the dog days of summer. ***** Mac DeMarco is a singer-songwriter enjoying growing acclaim – though it’s been relatively modest since he’s never been mentioned in The Rockaway Times before. According to his website, while living in “relative isolation he had nothing else to do but “make music. And where was his relative isolation? Arverne. Old Arverne, that is. He even mentions his Bayfield Avenue address in an interview on NPR radio. Many of his publicity shots are taken on Jamaica Bay. Though Canadian-born, he seems connected to the area. We saw a video of him talking about the area and he correctly noted that Arverne was named after Remington Vernam whose signature looked like “R.Verne. The A in Arverne came later.

The Lazer Speaks
Dublin Busking And Other Mermaid Tales… By Lou Pastina I just got back from a trip to Dublin, Ireland and was amazed at the number and quality of musicians in Dublin. Playing for the Rockaway Grayriders affords me the opportunity to play and visit the local music venues here in Rockaway, and I can vouch for Rockaway’s exploding music scene, but let me tell you, Dublin is happening. There are plenty of guys and gals playing, or as its called, “busking” out on street corners, and they are the real deal. There were literally three bands on every street corner in the Temple Bar area and Grafton Street. If you didn’t know, U2 actually started out in Dublin “busking.” Dublin is a short flight; you leave at night and wake up in Ireland, courtesy of that west wind blowing you northeast across the Atlantic. That wind is not the only thing moving toward Ireland though, the Atlantic Gulf Stream flows from the Caribbean past Florida, and up the coast right past Rockaway straight toward Ireland and on through to Denmark. The result is that Ireland gets warm weather that allows palm trees to survive. That’s right,
there are palm trees in Ireland. But don’t be mistaken, its never 90 degrees in Ireland like it is here. Going to Ireland at the height of this summer brought the bride and I to 60+ degree-days, a welcomed respite from NYC’s recent torrid temperatures. Rockaway shares many similarities with Ireland. Both have plenty of water around them courtesy of that Gulf Stream; Ireland after all is an island and Rockaway a peninsula. Both have, well, plenty of Irish people. Dublin is a cosmopolitan city though, many are Slavic, Russian and other ethnicities; but there are many homegrown Irish. Turns out the Irish are a mixture themselves of Celts, Vikings, Danish, and Anglo-Normans. Rockaway has plenty of Irish descent, many with names that end in vowels or “berg” or other non-Irish spellings. But the roots run deep. And both have a shared love of all things creative, music, art, story telling and more. Much is now the same in Rockaway. Not surprisingly, both love mermaids. Yes, mermaids. Ireland’s mermaids are immortalized in statues; Rockaway’s in the form of yoga instructors, paddleboard in-
structors and frozen yogurt entrepreneurs. Perhaps it is the connection to the Gulf Stream that brings Ireland and Rockaway together with these mystical creatures. We are blessed to have them. The Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen once wrote a story called the Little Mermaid. The Gulf Stream ends north toward Denmark, and there is a beautiful bronze statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. There are statues of mermaids in Ireland too, and with water from the Gulf Stream surrounding all sides of the island perhaps mermaids frequented the Emerald Isle at one time. It is, at times, a magical land filled with song and stories. Rockaway may have been a stop along the Gulf Stream for many of these magical mermaids. Certainly
Rockaway now has a glow of song and art across this seven-mile peninsula we call home. Today we get glimpses of fins flipping out on the water and are quick to call them dolphins or whales, but perhaps they are something more. Perhaps this is now a haven for those sirens of the sea calling their songs for a new age in Rockaway of art and song and entrepreneurism, and the tide is where they are now “busking” for us all. This is a new age for Rockaway; all we need is a statue or two. (Lou Pastina aka Lazer Lou is a Graybeard and member of The Grayriders band. He’s a retired executive from the New York Stock Exchange and has agreed to contribute regularly to The Rockaway Times).

Katz Allocates $32M to Queens Parks
Protect your world
Queens Borough President Melinda Katz is allocating a big chunk of change to various parks around the borough, including several projects in Rockaway. Katz announced an allocation of $32 million of her Fiscal Year 2016 discretionary capital funds for important construction, renovations and upgrades across 37 public parks in Queens. Queens is the largest borough of five in the City of New York with 7,273 acres of parkland, which amounts to just over 10 percent of the borough’s total land mass. “Parks are the jewels of our neighborhoods,” Katz said. “Part of what defines Queens’ trademark quality of life – especial-

We will be giving out kites to children under 99 years old while supplies last. Complete with supplies to create your own Whalemina Kite. The story of Whalemina book will also be for sale. THE RETURN OF WHALEMINA, BELOVED ICON OF ROCKAWAY Artist Geoff Rawling redesigned and refurbished the original fiberglass whale from Central Park Children’s Zoo. Love surfing? Or do you have an appreciation for film? Check out Women of the Seven Seas, the third annual New York Women’s Surf Film Festival at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (302 Beach 87th Street) on Saturday, August 15. Lava Girl Surf, the first New York City organization dedicated to the celebration and empowerment of female surfers, will host the film festival that will represent the group’s mission. The event, which will start at around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, will feature a selection of films from established and emerging directors focusing on the inspiring lives of women surfers around the globe, highlighting what makes their journey unique, fuels their passion and connects them to the ocean. Curated by Lava Girl Surf’s cofounder Davina Grincevicius, a surfer and director herself, Women Of the Seven Seas’ programming will include films from Hawaii, Southern California, Mexico, Australia, Indonesia and France. Directors participating in Women of the Seven Seas 2015 include Devyn Bisson, Ed Fladung, Adam Reynolds & Shane Passantino, Leah Dawson, Morgan Maassen, Nathan Oldfield, and Hayley Gordon. Devyn Bisson will personally present and premiere her new feature film, The Wave I Ride, for the east and west coast of the USA after premiering in Maui in May 2015. The 70-minute documentary tells the story of Hawaii’s big-wave charger Paige Alms. Alms grew up with Pe’ahi in her backyard, a proving ground for all big wave surfers known as “Jaws” for the toothy wave that rolls through the lineup. “We’re not just making another surf film. It’s not about aerials and cutbacks. It’s the story of what the ocean gives this woman’s soul and what she gives back,” says Bisson. In the little bohemian surf village of Sayulita, Mexico, this past February, Ed Fladung shot over the course of a few weeks Lola Mignot Gypsy Princess of Saulita, a tiny peek into the surfing practice, family life and personal style of Lola Mignot, the girl who is quickly becoming one of the best longboard
riders in Mexico. Adam Reynolds and Shane Passantino celebrate the independent voices of women’s surfing in We Rise Together, a short film that aims to showcase the substance behind three of Southern California’s kind-hearted and fun-loving female surfers: Eveline Van Brande, Taylor Nelson and Anna Ehrgott. In a beautiful trance of a dream, Leah Dawson takes us on a journey to the Mentawais with Julune: A Surf Dream in Indo, a romantic portrayal of surfing through poetry, song and epic shredding. “The Champ” Stephanie Gilmore shines once again through the lenses of renowned surfing photographer Morgan Maassen, but this time in an experimental eponymous video shot in France. Commissioned by the elegant classical swimwear label Seea, Intimasea is a short film by Nathan Oldfield celebrating the style, grace and beauty that is particular to women’s surfing and features Leah Dawson, Lola Mignot, Hallie Rohr, Karina Rozunko, Mele Saili and Makala Smith. Worm is a short by Hayley Gordon featuring California-born longboarder and lady slider Erin Ashley. Named after her nickname, the film captures Ashley sliding on some California point breaks at Church, Malibu and the River in California. “Surfing is a passion for me but also the connection that is made with other surfers through our love for the ocean and the creative energy that celebrates the stories from around the world,” Grincevicius says. “The film festival also generates positive awareness of the local businesses and their contribution to the community.” Alongside showcasing surf films, the festival will host a raffle with a Natures Shapes surfboard and many other great prizes from Imaginary Surf Co., SEEA, Salt Gypsy, Grindergirl Surfwear, Zingara Vintage, The Blue Bungalow, Scotty Bags, Suger, Goldie’s Natural Beauty, Off Season NYC, St James, Boarders, Sayra’s Wine Bar, and Uma’s.

Surfing or SwimmingArverne Residents Just Want Their Beaches By Katie McFadden The residents of Arverne just want to use their beaches and recent discussions have started to shed light on their plight. An unintentional controversy was sparked when Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder announced that he reached out to the Parks Department, requesting that they temporarily allow Beach 60th to Beach 63rd to be used as surfing beaches, since the beaches have long been lacking lifeguards and remain closed to swimmers. Residents of the Arverne homes in front of these beaches, were surprised by the demands and a lack of outreach beforehand, but the incident is starting to bring awareness to a bigger problem. The beaches need to be utilized in some way. At the end of July, Goldfeder announced that he reached out to the Parks Department, asking them to permit surfing from Beach 60th to Beach 63rd Street as a trial run for proposed surfing beaches, since surfing continues to grow on the peninsula. Goldfeder specifically chose those beaches, as they are consistently unmanned by lifeguards and are close to ongoing construction in Arverne. In a media mix-up by other local news outlets, the message was miscommunicated, and gave the impression that Goldfeder was walking over the Arverne residents, to take sides of the surfing community. At the last Community Board meeting in June, the issue of expanding surfing beaches was tabled, since it was learned that not everyone who lives in the area where the surfing beaches were being demanded, was aware of the request. The issue would be brought up again at the next Community Board meeting in September, so residents were shocked to learn of Goldfeder’s middle-of-the-summer proposal to Parks. “It kind of took us all by surprise, Chris Tedesco, a resident of Beach 61st Street and a Community Board member, said. “I’m not sure where it came from or who was prodding Goldfeder, but the residents took exception to his demands when he made zero effort to engage anyone in this community. The issue of surfing beaches was brought up in a big way earlier this summer at the Community Board meeting and it turned out that there wasn’t any community outreach regarding this issue, so it was tabled until September. So it seemed off and ill-informed of Goldfeder to make a press release demanding for something that has already been scheduled to
figure out. I am as pro-surfing as anybody. I understand what surfers have done for Rockaway but I felt the reports completely disregarded the community that lives here. It only focused on the surf community. There was no community outreach done before that proposal. He added that he didn’t understand why Goldfeder would discuss Beach 60th to Beach 63rd, as those specific beaches are technically within Assemblywoman Michelle Titus’ district and not Goldfeder’s. Goldfeder says his message and actions were misconstrued. “Fundamentally, the people misunderstood what I said and what I called for, Goldfeder said. “I firmly believe that there are more than enough beaches in Rockaway for everyone to get what they want. The reason I did what I did was because the Parks Department has refused to put lifeguards between Beach 60th-69th. In absence of lifeguards, swimming is prohibited anyway, so why not let surfers use it for now? What I asked for was completely misrepresented by media and sort of got everyone upset. As part of Goldfeder’s press release, he said that Parks Security officers had been turning away surfers from the closed beaches, which they are allowed to surf on, and Parks should allow them to surf freely while the beaches are closed anyway. According to Tedesco, surfers haven’t been turned away. “I’ll see somewhere between five to 10 surfers in the water every day. I know them. They’re parking in front of my house, none of them are local. They can drive here, park and go surfing. We feel we can handle those cars while it’s a closed beach and the surfers can go there, but when you make it an official surfing beach that is listed on Parks Department websites, that’s when it’s a different game. We’ll have more cars than we can handle. We can’t start officially designating surfing beaches without consulting those that live here first. As of now, the Parks Department has not responded to Goldfeder’s request. However the recent controversy is starting to shed light on a much larger problem. Why are the beaches closed in the first place? The Rockaway Times reached out to the Parks Department, asking why the beaches from Beach 60th to 74th Street are closed to swimmers and a Parks spokesperson deflected the ques-

This photo of a bike parked on Beach 129th Street was sent to us and other media outlets. The note attached to the bike reads: FYI. You were drunk last night and crashed your bike into my 10 year old daughter. It was 8:30. She is ok – luckily. You cut your head, ear and hand – in case you were wondering. We’re told the bike was left as was one lonely flip flop. Social media was all over the reckless rider. Many want to know: will Cinderella or Cinderfella come and claim the flip flop?

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon
Be Careful with that Jar of Moths! Recently, when writing about Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, I stated that “I tend to expect that at some point in this primary race the Donald’s ego and proclivity for allowing his mouth to override his thought process will eventually cause his campaign to flame out…” Many of you contacted me with your opinions that the misogynist and outright boorish rants that spewed from the “mouth that roared” after the recent republican debates appear to have done just that. On the other hand, new post-de-
bate polls have shown that the Donald has increased his lead over the rest of his republican presidential hopefuls. I can’t figure this guy’s playbook out, but I have to admit I’m loving every minute of it for the sole reason that it’s driving everyone (Republican and Democrat alike) crazy! In case you haven’t noticed, there has not been a lot of complaining regarding tidal street flooding on West 12th Road since the contractors finished placement of the coffer dam at the bay end of the block while they
work on the installation of the new bulkhead. I went back through my records for the months of June and July for 2013 and 2014 and found there had been a total of 19 instances of (nonstorm related) significant tidal street flooding on West 12th Road during that time. A similar review of the twomonth period of June and July 2015 revealed no (zero, zip, nada!) instances of non-storm related significant tidal street flooding. Of course we won’t know for sure until the new bulkhead is actually finished and the street is raised, but so far so good! Of course if we all can’t complain about street flooding we have to find something else to talk about. Now don’t get me wrong, like anyone else I do enjoy a good rumor every once in a while. How else would I find out so much about me that I didn’t even know? Nevertheless, that being said, sometimes rumors can fly out of control. A rumor is like a jar full of moths – once the jar is open and the little buggers escape, they are all over the place! Recently I was approached by several individuals who stated that they had “heard” that construction work on West 12th Road was being “held up” by a neighbor who was “…refusing to allow the contractors to modify the front of his property…” on the south side of the street to allow for the installation of an emergency lane. The truth of the matter is that the property in question was severely damaged during Sandy and modifica-
tion to the property was not conducted at this time to avoid any possible additional damage to either the property in question or adjoining residential structures. The decision to hold any property modifications in abeyance was strictly an engineering issue and in no way resulted from a refusal on the part of the homeowner to allow contractors access to his property. The contractor has been in touch with the appropriate city agencies as well as the homeowner and arrangements are being made to address this issue in the near future. Be careful with that jar of moths! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? Contact Information: Email – rtbetweenthebridges@gmail.com

HERE COMES SUNSHINE: THE GRATEFUL DEAD AND ROCKAWAY By Dylan Watton “Is that a terrapin on your arm?” Will asked. Why yes, it is a terrapin. Not a turtle, as so many people mistake it for. Besides, what turtle has a bright yellow shell with blue and red hues and a white lightning bolt going through it? “That’s awesome!” he said. “You’re obviously a fan of the Grateful Dead too.” Will showed me his arm tattoo, crudely drawn multi-colored dancing skeletons with top hats and canes. I was intimately familiar with the artwork. “You should come by my house this Wednesday,” he continued. “There’s a cover band that plays at a bar downtown and we usually leave from my place.” I only knew Will from our extremely brief time together in a senior year history class, but knowing that he was a Deadhead too was more than enough for me. Braving Albany’s frigid February weather, I went to Will’s house, a
typically dingy college rental in the off-campus student ghetto. Upon going to get a beer from his fridge, I noticed that two other house guests were using a purple-andgold beer koozie emblazoned with the message “F--- SANDY: RELIEF FOR ROCKAWAY BEACH AND BREEZY POINT, NY. DRINK ON.” I immediately went over to them and asked if they, like me, were from Rockaway and if they would also be going to the show. “Of course we are!” they exclaimed. We gladly chugged some Millers down upon realizing our common bonds. Fast-forward two-and-a-halfyears. On August 1 at Caracas on Beach 106 St., a band called Solshyne is busting out one Grateful song after another. There are throngs of music lovers getting in to the groove in their own way— some are politely sitting and sipping a drink while others are feverishly spinning and turning to the notes. Shortly after the concert begins, I see two young men walking
from downtown to uptown on the boardwalk. Lo and behold, its Jay Finn and Billy Krasowsky, the two Rockaway Deadheads I met up in Albany. Absent of Millers, we instead shared stories of our love for the Dead and of Rockaway. “Everybody in Rockaway is all about having fun and so are Dead,” Billy succinctly explained. “I think the small town identity Rockaway has with the community the Dead created, feed in to each other,” Jay added. These two chance encounters made me think: what is it that causes these otherwise separate entities—the Grateful Dead and
Rockaway Beach—to become intertwined over multiple generations? A little backstory for the uninitiated. The Grateful Dead were formed in 1965 in San Francisco, founded by guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, and bassist Phil Lesh. For 30 years, the band recorded and toured all around the world on a near constant basis, amassing a dedicated and loyal following—Deadheads— that often traveled from city-to-city to watch the band. Ms. New York Goes For Ms. America Crown By Katie McFadden Anna Treppiedi, representing Ms. New York, is hoping to be crowned Ms. America to support and spread the message of the importance of education. The Ms. America pageant isn’t like the Miss America you see on television. Unlike Miss America, which is reserved for single women between the ages of 17 and 24, Ms. America is open to women ages 26 and older who can be sin-
gle, married, widowed or divorced. There’s no swimsuit or talent portion. The ladies looking to become Ms. America are judged on Evening Gown, Interview, Sportswear and an on-stage question. Each woman has a certain platform that they stand for. “Basically the main goal of Ms. America is working toward your cause behind the crown, Treppiedi says. “My platform is the importance of education and keep-

ing at-risk youth off of the streets. Treppiedi, who lives in Brooklyn, already works toward this cause in the work she does at M.S. 318 Waterside School for Leadership on Beach 110th Street in Rockaway. As a Child Center of New York Coordinator and Site Supervisor, the 26-year-old runs the School’s Out New York City (SONYC) after-school program at M.S. 318. Through the program, Treppiedi helps provide the sixth through eighth graders at the school, a positive, educational outlet to keep them off the streets. “With the SONYC program, we offer programs within it such as book clubs, dance competitions, talent shows and other activities. We’ve had a peace week to spread awareness of anti-gang violence, which is extremely important in the Rockaways. A few weeks ago we had a huge flash mob at Beach 97th Street, which was a lot of fun, Treppiedi said of the some of the activities she does with the students. Treppiedi says the most challenging part of her job is “having the youth that [she] works with realize their potential. There are so many talented children and they either don’t know it or don’t acknowledge it. However, overcoming those challenges is what makes it worth it. “Having them realize their potential throughout the school year is really rewarding. I saw so many changes within students, whether it be their attitude becoming more positive or them developing their skills. When they realize what they’ve done and look back on it and say, ‘Ms. Anna, when I started I couldn’t do this and now I can,’ it makes them so happy, which makes me happy in return. Treppiedi also spreads the message of the importance of education at various events. Some may have seen her recently at the 100th Precinct Night Out Against Crime event, where she spoke with the youth and other visitors. Treppiedi is also training to become a
professional wrestler and uses the matches as a way to speak out. “When I made my wrestling debut, I was able to get into the ring and speak about how important education is. I never knew how many children come out to indie wrestling shows. It was a great opportunity to spread the message, she said. If she wins the Ms. America title, she’ll have an even wider audience to promote her cause. “This whole pageant is about broadcasting your cause. No matter if I win or lose, I’m going to work towards this cause, but when you win the title, it really gives you a bigger platform to spread awareness and it’s really amazing what your title can do for someone. If you win, you get the crown, but you also get to make appearances as Ms. America every month to support your cause. I would be able to go state to state and broadcast the importance of education and keeping youth off the streets. This is a need all over the world, not just in New York. The winner also gets some money toward their cause. As part of the Ms. America Pageant, there is a People’s Choice vote. The voting takes place online and each vote costs $1-2. “Right now, all of the participants have raised about $3,000. Half of the proceeds from the vote will go toward the winner, who will be able to keep it or donate it to whatever cause she chooses. If I win, the money would go to the program at M.S. 318. With the money, I’d like to start some sort of scholarship program or grant for youth in the Rockaways. Treppiedi will fly to California at the end of the month for the first time for the pageant on August 29 at the Curtis Theater in Brea. The pageant starts at 7:30 p.m. PST (10:30 p.m. EST) and will be broadcast on www.alerththeglobe.com. In the meantime, those interested in helping Treppiedi, can cast their vote for her or any of the participants at www.msamericapageant. com. The virtual voting closes on Thursday, August 27.

Chasing Ferry Dreams By Katie McFadden There’s a Don Quixote of the Seas in our midst. When you want something done, why not start it yourself? Lifelong Rockaway resident Sam Friedman is trying to do just that for something that has long been in demand since it was taken away in October 2014. He’s trying to kickstart a Rockaway ferry service. Friedman, 24, sat down with Jim Barker, President of Seastreak, which operated the previous Rockaway ferry service, to see if it is possible to get it started sooner as Rockaway waits for the City to start up the ferry again as part of a citywide system in 2017. According to Friedman, Barker said it is possible and the company would take care of all the technicalities such as permits, licensing, insurance and staff. The vessel would be able to carry 150 passengers and would make four trips a day, two in the morning and two in the evening. All that’s needed is some money. Seastreak told Friedman that the service would cost $8,000 per day to operate so Friedman is looking to raise $2.1 million to cover operation costs and the cost of docking and administration to run the ferry service for a full year. To raise the money, Friedman is hoping local businesses, residents and visitors to the peninsula will chip in. He’s turning to crowdfunding site Kickstarter. com to try to reach his goal through donations from anyone looking to support the cause. “When you take the ferry, you have a beautiful ride where you pass Coney Island, see the skyline, the Statue of Liberty, etc. Between the amount of people that commute to Manhattan and the amount of people that want to visit Rockaway because of the new culture, wine bars, arts, businesses and more, it only seems right that we have another mode of transportation for a beach town. Fire Island has a ferry. Staten Island has a ferry. Rockaway needs its ferry again,” the young entrepreneur said. “I think we have a strong enough community with enough believers in Rockaway to cover the costs.” Friedman believes that the fundraising goal is doable. “We had 400,000 people visit here one Sunday in July alone. If just a small portion of those visitors donated, it would be simple. Also, between the number of commuters and small businesses that want more people coming to Rockaway, I don’t think it’s that much,” Friedman said. The most money raised for any Kickstarter project was $20 million for a smart watch invention. Those who donate certain amounts toward a project are often awarded incentives, depending on how much is donated. Friedman is hoping local
small businesses can support this cause by donating some of those incentives like gift certificates, apparel, gifts and more, to encourage people to make a donation toward the ferry. Some past Rockaway-related Kickstarter projects were successful in raising funds, but nothing ever came from them. Friedman says his intentions are good and honest. “I’m not doing this to make money. I’m doing this because I’m a Rockaway native and I see a great opportunity to help the community and make a difference,” he said. “After Sandy, we saw that this is a strong, closeknit community. You saw people helping each other emotionally and physically, helping each other get food and cleaning basements, and it made us so much stronger. Many lost their material possessions and it made us realize what matters,” Friedman said. “Now Rockaway is coming back and we should take advantage of this momentum. I’d like to do something that builds us up even more. There’s no personal gain from this. I just want to help build this community and be a part of it.” With Kickstarter, the project is only funded if 100 percent of the goal is raised, meaning Friedman will have to raise all $2.1 million to get even a penny of it and his goal is to do it in 60 days. The goal may be lofty, but there is nothing to lose. “I’m an entrepreneur and I like to recognize the opportunities around my community and build my own experience by putting projects like this together, or at least trying. You have to at least try,” he said. This isn’t the 24-year-old’s first project. In 2011, he co-founded MNX Connect, a software company that helps businesses in the US expand into international emerging markets. “We have a network, throughout the Middle East and Africa, of different service providers on the ground to represent US companies here and support the company’s growth,” Friedman said. “MNX continues to grow. We keep getting better and better.” Some may also know Friedman from his more local project, The Paleo Factory, which he operates with his girlfriend, Miriam, since January of this year. “We really started this because she’s a health enthusiast and I have a sweet tooth. She didn’t want me eating artificial sweeteners and processed sugars and other toxic ingredients, so we made this dessert that’s all healthy and nutrient dense and it tastes really good,” he said. That product, which they call MUD (Mindfulness Using Dessert), is “a mix of ice cream and mousse. It comes in vanilla or chocolate and has a lot of nutrients.” The couple sells MUD through their website, ThePaleoFactory.com, but they’ve also sold it at local spots like the Riis Park Beach Bazaar, Tacoway
Beach and more. Now Friedman is chasing ferry dreams. “There’s no point in crying to the city, waiting until 2017 for it to return. We gotta take matters into our own hands. If we want something for ourselves, we gotta do it ourselves and we’ll only get stronger by doing so,” Friedman said. Friedman just launched the Kickstarter project on Wednesday and
has until October 11 to reach his goal. To make a donation, search “Rockaway Ferry” on Kickstarter. com. If any businesses or restaurants would like to contribute gift cards, shirts, merchandise or anything else as incentives, reach out to Friedman at SamFriedman90@ gmail.com. “We’re open to anything and grateful for your interest,” Friedman said.

FLOWERS & KIND THOUGHTS Every couple of weeks on a Sunday, my friend drops off some flowers. No agenda. No event or celebration. No rhyme or reason. Just, “I have flowers for you.” I accept them without a “you shouldn’t have” because it is something very pure and simple - a gift of something beautiful that brings happiness. Living is so busy and complicated and the beauty of a few flowers in a vase on the table in clear view can make all the difference. Seeing the beauty of the flowers makes an impression in our brains and generates a happy feeling.
Take a look around as you walk about or ride your bike or drive and see all of the beautiful flowers of summer in full bloom, attracting all of the flying organisms and fulfilling a balanced cycle of life in nature. What we see, hear, think, smell, feel, taste, say becomes a part of us. Seeing beauty in flowers or in whatever form, I believe, makes an impression on our minds and hearts. Hearing the waves roll on the shore makes an impression on our minds and hearts. Smelling the lav-
ender after touching the tip of the purple cone makes an impression on our minds and hearts. Feeling the breeze on our faces and sifting through our hair makes an impression on our minds and hearts. Tasting the tomato as it comes off the vine makes an impression on our minds and hearts. Thinking and saying positive words and loving words, I believe, makes an impression on our minds and hearts. Thinking compassionately towards someone who may be treating you in an unkind manner, makes an impression on our minds and hearts. Sometimes that may be particularly hard to do especially if that person provokes anger and dislike. But thinking cruel words and of course saying them, not only has an effect – whatever it may be – on the person, but goes inside you. Here’s what the Dalai Lama has to say about that: “. . . Feelings of anger and hatred arise from a mind that is troubled by dissatisfaction and discontent. So you can prepare ahead of time by constantly working toward building inner contentment and cultivating kindness and compassion. This brings about a certain calmness of mind that can help prevent anger from arising in the first place. And then when a situation does arise that makes you an-
The Rockaway Times gry, you should directly confront your anger and analyze it. Investigate what factors have given rise to that particular instance of anger or hatred. Then, analyze further, seeing whether it is an appropriate response and especially whether it is constructive or destructive. And you make an effort to exert a certain inner discipline and restraint, actively combating it by applying the antidotes: counteracting these negative emotions with thoughts of patience and tolerance.” (The Art of Happiness) This is a great lesson to learn. The anger and hatred only grow within us and brings about dis-ease. Checking in right away when the anger wells up inside helps stop it before it becomes a part of you. Make a conscious effort to surround yourself with beautiful things and positive, beautiful thoughts and positive beautiful feelings. May I be happy, may I be free, may I let go of things that do not serve me; may I have inner peace; may I appreciate all the beauty around me and pass it on to someone else!

tion, saying “We are in support of expansion but waiting for Community Board input.” The local Community Board is on hiatus in the summer. The Rockaway Times pushed further, again asking what reason those beaches were closed in the first place, but got no response. “We have extremely crowded beaches. The lifeguard chief at Beach 59th street said the numbers have doubled. They have no place to put swimmers,” Tedesco said. “These beaches have been operating without lifeguards, which was understandable for years because no one lived here. Now nobody has addressed the fact that these blocks have been built up and you have people coming off the A Train to go to the beach at Beach 67th Street, and the closest beach you can go swimming at is on Beach 59th Street.” With the development of Arverne by the Sea, the area behind these beaches being discussed is no longer empty. Arverne by the Sea offer 2,300 homes, according to Bill Zlata, Homeowner Representative for The Dunes, which is made up of 271 homes itself, and more properties are lined up to be built. “There’s been some poor planning by the developers and local representatives and the Parks Department, seeing these beaches closed when we have all these people residing here. Plus on the weekend, you have hundreds of people getting off the train on Beach 67th Street. They come here to go swimming and once they get here, they’re being told by Parks that it’s not a lifeguarded beach and they have to walk eight blocks one way or the other to go swimming. You have people who live here, driving to other beaches just to go swimming,” Zlata said. “When Goldfeder said in his press release that these beaches are underutilized, that was disingenuous. This is a discussion that has to be had with all parties concerned.” With this recent controversy, the issues are starting to be discussed. “Initially we had people
who were angry over Goldfeder’s press release, but now we’re thankful. Councilman Donovan Richards responded by calling a meeting, involving all of the interested parties, to discuss these beaches. If Goldfeder’s letter to the Parks Department sparked this discussion, I’m thankful,” Zlata said. Richards is expected to hold a meeting at his office on August 17 with the various parties involved to discuss the use of the beaches. Goldfeder has since called for a similar meeting on Thursday, August 13. “I’ve been around for a long time and I’ve never gone against the wishes of the community against their will. My request to the Parks Department was simple; instead of letting the beaches be empty, let people use them. There is a ton of people on the sand there, but the water is empty. While these beaches are closed, everyone loses. You can’t swim or surf there. People in Arverne think I’m against swimming. I think you can have both swimming and surfing beaches there. I’ve been asking Parks to meet with us for 14 months and they’ve ignored me over and over again. This all could have been prevented if Parks came out here a year ago and said, let’s do surfing, let’s do swimming. We could have came to a compromise, but another summer has gone by with these beaches wasted.” “We’ve gone with another summer wasted. This situation has been ludicrous. Surfers have been trying to move their agenda forward and the residents have been trying to move our agenda forward, but we all want the same thing. We just want the Parks Department to designate these beaches, so they can be used. We just want to enjoy our beaches and right now, the Parks Department is preventing that. We need to get this right before next year,” Zlata said. All are welcome to discuss the beaches at Goldfeder’s meeting at the Rockaway YMCA at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 13. These issues are expected to be discussed again at the next Community Board meeting on September 8.

Registration Opens for Poseidon’s Parade Get ready to shake your seashells, flap your fins and draw inspiration from the sea. The inaugural Poseidon’s Parade, a celebration of summer and the ocean, is set to take place on Saturday, September 19. Rockaway has long participated in Coney Island’s annual Mermaid Parade, with the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade putting their best fins forward, earning first place for the past two years for the best motorized float. Inspired by the event made popular by Brooklyn’s beach community, Rockaway’s mermaids are bringing a parade of their own to the peninsula with Poseidon’s Parade. While Coney Island’s mermaid parade can get a little risquĂŠ, the Poseidon’s Parade founders are labeling Rockaway’s nautical event as a “family-friendly art parade that encourages creativity and artistic expression.â€? “We’re honoring the ocean and artistic expression, like we experience each year in Coney Island,â€? founder
Casey Brouder said. “Poseidon is a symbol that speaks to the resilience of Rockaway. After all we have been through as a community, we can pay homage to the strong and beautiful ocean we can’t seem to live without. The parade will celebrate Rockaway’s resiliency by taking place on the newly-built boardwalk. It will start at 11 a.m. at Beach 106th Street and will end at the Beach 95th Street plaza. Those interested in participating are encouraged to register soon. Participants can march solo, with a group, a boardwalk-friendly float or on a bike. All mermaids, mermen, sea creatures, sailors and other nautical-themed costumes are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for different categories, highlighting the most creative costumes, so get crafty! Registration is open now and costs $5 per participant and $10 per float. If interested in registering, or for more information, head to www.poseidonsparade.com.

Social Media Snapshots Some great photos are found on Instagram and Facebook and various social media outlets. But because not everyone is connected and because some of these photos should reach the print audience we figured we’d go old school and put some we find in the newspaper. As much as people like showing off their stuff in new age ways, there’s nothing like get-
ting in a newspaper! Martha Rossi caught this one of a bunch of girls daring someone to go in first. Jackie Kenel snapped the city skyline and Liz Breslin-Smith caught the beautiful clouds over Tribute Park. Seven year old Elia Wittmer knows how to have fun in a Broad Channel backyard (photo by Tommy Wittmer).

Surfing Injuries In an upcoming column I will be writing on the issue of injuries occurring in our waters, from collisions due to over crowding and people just being newbies to the sport. A few people have come up to me and told me stories of what they have witnessed, some even telling me how these injured people have refused ambulatory care. We at the RBSA would like people to log their injuries, whether self-inflicted such as falling and getting hit by your own board, or someone colliding with you, to log these at the rbsurfersassociation. org website. The form should be up on Friday.

How to Hire By Artie Wallace
When having a project done start to finish, the rules on how to hire are simple. References, price, availability and most important is the impression you get when meeting someone you’re thinking about hiring. We can cover hiring someone to do a job in the future, for now we are going to focus on the DIYer and how to hire and what to hire for. First rule for a DIYer is to know your limits. If you take on projects that are out of your league, it can cost a lot more to have someone come in and fix your mess-ups. Now you may need someone to come in and do the parts of your projects that you can’t handle. This is where you need to know how to hire. This is a tough topic to cover in a limited space, so I will cover the basics. Don’t hesitate to call around and ask if the handyman or contractor is willing to come in for part of the job. Before you hire someone, take the time to look at their website and Facebook page, find out a little about who your hiring. Ask around to see if your friends used them or
heard about them. Anyone doing this kind of work will have their own tools and truck or vehicle to work with. Don’t hire a DIYer for hire to help you with your DIYer project. Make sure you’re hiring someone with experience or it will cost you more in the long run. The most important thing is to hire someone local. Sure, keeping it local is a great rule in general, but when hiring someone to do part of a job for you, it is a must. Just try getting someone from 45 minutes away to come back for five minutes worth of work. My final word of advice would be don’t be fooled by titles. Title of contractor sounds like they only do big jobs. That is not always the case. Some of them are very happy to come in for the small jobs. Title of handyman sounds like a jack of all trades, but that is seldom the case. A lot of handymen are retired contractors and have many years experience. So titles are only words, reputation is everything. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com

Diary Of A Fat Man
A Weighs To Go By Bruce Bernfeld
I looked at a picture of myself that was taken this week and I discovered that I was still very fat. I think that’s a good thing. I am proud of what I’ve accomplished over the past 10 weeks, but it’s also good to realize I’ve got a long way to go! I’ve been trying to figure out to what I attribute this success I’ve had so far (I have lost 10 percent of my body weight on this journey). I have been eating a much healthier diet than I ever have. If I am hungry I always go to the fridge and not the cabinets because there is rarely anything in our cabinets these days that is good for you! For food not to need refrigeration and not spoil means it is loaded with chemicals! I have learned to use a Vitamix blender to get the most vitamins and nutrients out of vegetables and fruit, and I am thrilled that I have taken the first few steps toward a healthier lifestyle. But it again comes back to why am I succeeding? I think it is im-

portant to figure this out for a few reasons. We know there are always specific psychological reasons for success or failure so it goes without saying that we should try to figure out what they are so one can maintain the success they’ve had. Obviously these factors may be different for each of us For whatever reason, for me I think the driving force is accountability. Putting my journey out there to you guys every week has really been an amazing help. People I barely know are passing me in the street and saying things like “Hey, you only lost one pound last week, what happened?” or “Keep up the good work, I read your column every week.” Lately though, most of the comments have been about exercise. Like why aren’t I doing any? (I’ll deal with that in a future column). So, for me, the more people who know about my journey, the easier it is for me to keep the course and not waver. Why? It can be anything from fear of public failure to needing approval to wanting to please, but I don’t think it is necessary to
delve into the psychological reasons. Just knowing that I am answering to a higher authority (you guys) is motivation enough to succeed! So, this week’s lesson is that if you are concerned that you may not reach your short or long-term goals...publicize them. Your community is there to assist you. Not only will they give you strength when you may need it but if by the outside chance you fail, you will be making some of them happy too!

Transportation Report Card for Politicians and Agencies By Rick Horan It’s a little scary that we’re already knee-deep in primaries for president for an election that does not take place until November of 2016. It does remind us however that it is our responsibility to understand how candidates stand on different issues, otherwise how do we know if we should vote for them? So where do our local politicians stand on important transportation issues? That’s exactly what I was wondering! I intend to use this column to get those answers for you (and me). I figured while we’re at it we should also include the heads of the three agencies whose opinions shape our transportation system for better or worse. These include: MTA Buses, Subways and the DOT.
Who will be included?
Elected Officials: Eric Ulrich and Donovan Richards, NYC Council; Joe Addabbo and James Sanders, State Senate; Phil Goldfeder and Michelle Titus, State Assembly; Melissa Katz, Queens Borough President; and Bill de Blasio, Mayor. Transportation Agency Heads: Darryl Irick, President, MTA Bus Company; Carmen Bianco, President, MTA New York City Transit; and Polly Trottenberg, DOT Commissioner.
Some things I hope to learn from MTA agency heads:

Planning for the future is something we all need to do. Young people do not stay young forever and all of us will eventually have, as my father used to call it, “that certain melancholy event. So today’s topic is advanced directives including living wills (LWs), healthcare proxies (HCPs) and DNRs. Advanced directives are a means for a person to direct their healthcare choices when they are unable to do so themselves. A HCP is usually a two-page form that allows the patient to opt out of things like ventilator support, CPR and artificial nutrition when they have a terminal or irreversible medical condition. It allows the patient to clearly state his or her wishes and it names an agent or proxy who is empowered to make medical decisions for the patient. It is important for the patient to discuss his or her wishes with the agent (plus at least one alternate). New York State law assumes that the patient wants to continue living. For example if the HCP does not specify whether the patient would want artificial nutrition, the patient’s doctor can order it even if the HCP agent objects. Living wills, while not fully recognized in NY State, also allow the patient to express their wishes and desires for end-of-life care. This is very important in determining how that care is given. I have seen many instances where a terminally ill patient without a HCP or LW on a ventilator with a feeding tube may linger for weeks with no
hope of recovery (it is estimated that 90 percent of Medicare expenditures occur in the last year of life). Obviously this causes the family much grief and suffering. Should the family want the tubes removed they must sign written statements that this would be the patient’s wishes. This often causes disagreements and strife within the family. The process may take days to resolve itself. A HCP greatly simplifies the process. That is why a HCP aides both the patient and the family by taking the decision making out of the family’s hands. It must be noted however that a HCP is not binding, meaning the HCP agent may allow a treatment that the patient did not want which is why the patient needs to fully discuss their wishes with the agent at the time the document is signed. On the other hand any family member may sign an in-hospital DNR for the patient, often referred to as MOLST (Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment). This does not require a HCP. Some people have non-hospital DNRs. In the event that EMS comes to the house for a patient emergency, the non-hospital DNR must be given to them at that time. Many doctors keep blank HCPs in their office. It is common practice for an attorney writing a will for someone to include a HCP and LW. If you have a HCP, LW or nonhospital DNR make sure your doctor has a copy. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

AHOY ROCKAWAY !
Water Temperature 76*F: Entrance to New York Harbor (15 NM S.E. of Breezy Point ) New Moon- August 14 (highest/lowest tides) This past weekend had some spectacular weather on hand for us with both cooler temperatures and sea breezes drifting onto the Rockaway peninsula. Compared to the previous week, it was welcomed relief as temperatures dropped and the humidity leveled off to more tolerable conditions. Air conditioning is a great invention, but there is just no greater relief from the heat wave as when that cool breeze rolls in off the ocean and hits Rockaway. If you’re lucky enough to have one of those “cool Rockaway porches on your house, you can get outside to really enjoy that sea breeze. Getting outside in the summer time is what it’s all about in Rockaway, and fishing is a great way to do that. Perhaps you’ve noticed that the water temperature has been warming up. It’s at this time of year, in August, that the water temperature reaches it’s warmest point all year. The fluke

will actually seek deeper channels and cooler water at this time of the summer as the shallow back bays and creeks really start to warm up. There are still fluke up in the back bays and creeks and finding a “keeper can be some time consuming work, but they are there. At this time of year the porgies are in, and the action starts to pick up on them. Sea bass are also starting to show up in numbers as well. When fishing for these species, try and find underwater structures such as a rock pile, pier, or jetty. These fish like to accept an offering of worms or clams, but will eat other types of bait as well depending what they are feeding on at the time. Striped bass are not around in huge numbers, but there are big fish always lurking around the area willing to take a bunker chunk on both the “inside (bay), as well as the “outside (ocean). Look for these fish at night as they are predatory fish and are actively feeding between dusk and dawn. Snappers are in and thriving at most docks and piers and are “easy fishing for the kids (hook, bobbin,
pole, bait). Blue claw crabs are also around. The new moon is on August 14 and that would be a good time to float some bass eels out there and wait for a big strike! We contacted our stations, and here’s what they had to report: Tom’s Wave Service Station/Bait & Tackle in Rockaway Park reports that the bay is loaded with spearing. Snappers are in and active along the docks. Blue claw crabs have shown up and were in abundance in a few places during the past weekend. Tom reports that the “keeper ratio for fluke in the bay has dropped off significantly as the fish move out to deeper cooler channels. On the “outside (ocean) there have been reports of many dolphins swimming in the surf. Tom said that there are significant numbers of porgies are in the area and they are being taken home for dinner. The porgies are feeding on clams and bloodworms, but Tom said “The porgies are REALLY hitting hard on the bloodworms, and prefer them over the offerings of clams. Big Ron’s Bait & Tackle in Howard Beach: We called Big Ron’s and spoke with Kim. Kim reports that it’s been quiet during the heat of the mid-summer lull. The good news is that the porgies are in; the bad news is that the fluke fishing is nowhere near as good as it was last season and local anglers miss that. Kim said that “The customers are joking that they are not going fishing they’re just feeding the fish.

Line In The Sand Needed Some of you may have seen the big five-foot wheel, which said No LNG, WE rolled along the beach this past Sunday to promote The Line in the Sand event against Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas. If you haven’t you will! If you are on the beaches or boardwalk during the rest of this weekend and at the event on Sunday at the Surf Beach, we will roll it to promote OUR event. When I say “OUR” I mean, as in you and me. Yes US! WE! WE need all of US to come out to this event, which is being sponsored by: -SURFRIDER FOUNDATION -ROCKAWAY JET SKI -ROCKAWAY SURFERS ASSOCIATION -THAI ROCK -LOLA STAR -CATSKILL MOUNTAINKEEPER
-CARACAS ROCKAWAY -SANE ENERGY PROJECT -UMA’S -ALL OUR ENERGY -ROCKAWAY SUMMER -FRIENDS of ROCKAWAY BEACH WE need to fight for our beaches and ocean. We know that we have here in the United States some of the largest amounts of natural gas on earth. So why the hell would anyone want to or need to propose a $400 million gas import facility just 20 miles off the Rockaway peninsula? Does that sound like a good investment to you? It’s almost like the state of Nebraska importing corn from Iowa or like someone in Dayton going to the beach in Coney Island. As much as Nebraska importing corn would confuse me, importing gas to the US totally boggles my mind!
Now as WE rolled OUR wheel along OUR shores this past Sunday, many were thankful and looking forward to Sunday’s event on the 16th. Many were happy to learn what LNG is. Although most people now get the dangers of having an LNG port just off of OUR shores, there were still a handful who think it is no big deal. And in all fairness, there are some who are in favor. That is the beauty of living free, we can disagree if we need to. Another great aspect of living free is to be able to tell New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, governor of the greatest state in the United States of America: WE DON’T WANT LNG IN OUR BACKYARD. Let’s tell him to keep us free of LNG and VETO Port Ambrose!
Please come out for an hour or two or make a day or afternoon of it at Beach 88th-91nd (the Surf beach). Sign a banner or a petition. Hear an elected official or two give their support. NYS Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and NYS Senator Joe Addabbo will be there along with Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. OUR huge group photo will be taken at the groin (jetty) at 5:30 p.m., so make sure you bring lots of signs. If you don’t have a sign just bring a smile! KEEP US FREE FROM LNG AS WE DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND!! Sunday August 16 4:30-6:30 pm Beach 88-91

RBVL Crowns 10 Champions Continued from page 3
day 9-0, making them the only 2015 RBVL champion to go undefeated on Saturday. Can you say “Ocean Division 2016?” In the Beach, 8th seed Kevin C. Buckley Sandstorms upset top seed Rat Pack NYC 21-19 in the fifth set for the biggest upset of the day but they could not make it out of the next round, losing a tight one in five to the All American Hero’s. The Hero’s then lost a tight one of their own to champs Edison Place in five 21-12. That makes two titles in a row for Edison Place. The elevator is going up. It’s rare that a new team comes into the league and wins a title. (Actually, it’s just rare that a new team comes into the RBVL at all.) But that’s what Eh-Stay did, beating Connolly’s, the Breakaways and Kiss My Ace along the way in the Beach Breeze. All four top seeds won their first round games in the Boardwalk but then 3rd and 4th seeds, It’s All Good and Team Margaritas, took down the top two, Rockaway Gliders and Rockaway Breakers in mild upsets. Team Margaritas finished off their quest with a 3-1 win against the legendary ones in spite of Coach Bugsy’s strategies and speeches. It’s All Good was hampered by the pulled calf (cow) of Cement Shoes Flanagan and the cramped calf (just a calf) of Alex Goldberg. So did the elder statesmen of It’s All Good weep and leave the beach early after their tough finals loss? No, no, my friends. They cracked open the cooler, the backup cooler, the secret backup cooler and the battery powered music and enjoyed the best day of the year. That’s right, an informal survey by Murph and Dickie established that the best day of the year in America is RBVL Playoff Saturday. Finishing second in the vote was Christmas followed by Groundhog Day and Arbor Day. The Sun Division was one of the tightest regular season races in years giving any of the 6 teams a good chance of walking out winners. Well who rose to the challenge? The same team that rises to the challenge on the dance floor each and every week – the Bungalow Baranha’s. To win it all the Baranha’s beat Le Greann, Perfect Settings and the White Horse Tavern
Beach Posse, half the teams in the division. That’s real good work. And two title in two years. It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere ran away with the Sun Ray Division and was a clear favorite in the Sun Ray. They did not disappoint, running through the tournament easily. ServPro NW Brooklyn got a game off them in the final but that was their only slip up all day. The Moon division saw IFMA’s reach the final round for the second year in a row but this time they came out victorious unlike 2014. A 3-1 victory over the Channimals will have them fitted for a new wardrobe – the much sought after hooded championship sweatshirt. The Star Division saw two teams go 3-1 in round one, 3-2 in round two and 2-2 in the finals. That means it all came down to the last game of the day. The two teams were Rathbones and BILLY MACS who battled tooth and nail until Rathbones won game five 21-16 for their first ever title. Well deserved. Over all, three #1 seeds, two #2 seeds, three #3 seeds and two #4 seeds ended up taking titles, showing how important it is to finish high in the yearlong standings. No 5th through 8th place teams won a championship. The beach was spotlessly clean at the end of the festivities and special thanks go to two groups, the Gateway maintenance and cleaning crew and you, the players. Both would have made Felix Unger proud with their fastidious quest to leave behind a sparkling beach. Well done. Special thanks go to Rita Mullally for her great support and assistance to the RBVL throughout the years. Some sandwiches, wraps and watermelon were provided for lunch and the Riis Park Bazaar provided music all day although their volume level was considerably lower than the usual RBVL blasts. Many players and fans expressed their heartfelt thanks to Patty and her colleagues throughout the gorgeous day. “I wait for this day all year.” “Every Monday I feel depressed and blah but thinking of Wednesday nights picks me right up.” “I can’t fathom how much work goes into a day like this.” “You and your team do a phenomenal job every year.” “Look how many people are here today, all be-
cause of you and your team’s hard work.” “Look back to when you took over the league in 2001 with 19 teams and immediately expanded to 32 teams. Now there are 76 teams and that is a huge achievement.” Patty and the RBVL committee would like to say, “Thank you,” to all the wellwishers for their kind words, hugs and kisses on Saturday and all along the way. And thanks to all who helped out on “Playoff Saturday,” reffing, tracking scores, updating the scoreboard and basically doing whatever was necessary to make the day run smoothly. And a special thanks to two young ladies who worked all year with their parents and did an amazing amount of work, Caroline Gifford and Juliana Moule. Well done! Let the vacations begin. Now that the season is over everyone should feel free to take a trip. All of Rockaway is getting a bit verklempt just thinking about the season coming to end. What the RBVL does for Rockaway is quite magical. Just because the league is officially over doesn’t mean that the volleyball games must stop. Action should continue around the beach for several more weeks. The Riis Park Beach Bazaar wants to keep the fun going on Wednesdays, for another 4 weeks of beach volleyball. Starting Wednesday, August 12, they will begin a rec league designed to be a competitive but fun extension of the RBVL momentum. They’d like to encourage full or existing teams to sign up this Saturday at the sign-up table they will have present. Individuals are welcome too -- solo play-
ers will be placed appropriately on a team based on skill level. Email Alex Moule or Ruth Gilwit for further information: alexandermoule3@gmail. com. rgilwit@rpbeachbazaar.com. Don’t forget to check our website at www.rbvl.com. You’ll find a lot of playoff pictures shortly. For 2016, opening day will be on Wednesday night 6/1 and the playoff Saturday will be on 8/13. Please respond to all invitations to weddings, christenings, parties and car dealership openings on that date with a polite, “I can’t make it to your silly affair because I will be at Riis Park with a thousand of my friends from 10 AM to 10 PM having more fun than a barrel of monkeys.” If you have any final thoughts or comments please call Patty Moule at 917-613-0908. (Call between 10 AM and 9 PM.) See you on the beach 5/25/16 for RBVL practice night.

HERE COMES SUNSHINE: THE GRATEFUL DEAD AND ROCKAWAY Continued from page 15
handedly, the Grateful Dead created the jam band genre, stretching their compositions into journeys while maintaining a strong Americana and straight rock and roll feel in their music. On August 9, 1995, the band’s long strange trip came to end as Garcia, after years of ill health and drug abuse, died in a rehabilitation clinic. The remaining band members have continued to play both together and separately, culminating in their “farewell shows” this past June and
July in Santa Clara, California and Chicago. Spend any amount of time in Rockaway and you’re bound to find a Deadhead in relatively short order. For me, I never had to look far, as both of my parents, Larry Watton and Allison Lindon, followed the band for over a decade. Combined, they saw well over 500 shows all across the U.S. “My senior year of high school [at Beach Channel] a lot of my friends were into the Dead, but I never gave it much thought, even though they talked about it all the time,” Allison said. “When I went to Hofstra for college, the Dead played a set of shows at Radio City Music Hall that were simulcast at the Calderon Theater right by campus. I didn’t go in to the theater, but I immediately fell in love with the scene.” She had found a sense of community and belonging, and quickly drew parallels
between this new found band and her hometown. “Rockaway is an entity unto itself, and so are the Dead,” she explained. “The Dead are often the ‘forgotten child’ of rock and roll, and in many ways are only tangentially connected with it. I feel the same way about Rockaway. It’s its own vibe—one big family.” For my Deadhead dad, his journey began by perusing through his sister Carol’s records at a young age. “She always had American Beauty lying around,” Larry said, referring to the band’s seminal
studio album featuring two of their biggest hits in “Truckin’” and “Sugar Magnolia.” At age 12, staying at a sleepaway camp in upstate New York, he found many of his counselors returning from the Watkins Glen racetrack in a jubilant, frenzied mood. “I later realized that they were tripping,” he said. “The Dead had just played a huge concert with the Allman Brothers there, and all of the counselors were buzzing about it.” Upon his return to Rockaway, my dad began recruiting many of his friends in to the scene. “It’s just that feeling of freedom you get from both the Dead and Rockaway,” he continued. “Everybody in both places is kind, giving, and very cultural, into their nationalities and America like nowhere else. The Grateful Dead are the American band, and Rockaway is the American town.” Elliot Harris, a 60-year-old retired guidance counselor, has lived in Rockaway for more than
50 years and first saw the Dead in 1971 at the Manhattan Center. “It was just an immediate thing,” Elliot said. “I went to a show and was like ‘This happens on a regular basis?’” Steeped in music his whole life, he was impressed by the virtuosic performances of Garcia, Weir, and Lesh and enthralled by the blues stylings of Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, the band’s deceased first organist. “A lot of the audience, and a lot of the people from Rockaway, were young white kids,” Elliot, who is African-American, explained. “They had never seen anything like Pigpen before.” He also confessed that “Rockaway has always been a party place, and the substances going around at Dead shows always fed into that. But it was just always about the music first for me. You knew what was going to happen, but you also never knew what was going to happen.” For me, it is indeed the music itself that has fused the peninsula and the Dead together. Rockaway is the ultimate summer town, a place that comes alive once the sun stays out. The Grateful Dead’s
sound feeds into this sense of warmth like no other act. Garcia’s guitar, which my mom declared she became one with during shows, is summarily bright and airy with bursts of ferocity, much like a summer’s day in the ocean. Songs like “Franklin’s Tower” and “Eyes of the World” provide upbeat tempos with jazz inflections that mimic a summer’s day—intensity, pulsing sounds, and mellow flourishes. Twenty years almost to the day since Garcia’s passing, the Grateful Dead have cemented their legacy as one of, if not the, greatest American rock bands in history. For Rockaway and its many Deadheads over many generations, the community and songs the Dead created reminded us of home in a way that no other entity, musical or not, could ever compare too. And with the legacy of the Dead being passed down from person to person, Rockaway will likely remain a hub for Deadheads for years to come. In the band’s own words, the music never stopped.

Everyday Heroes By Chris Romulo
Physical culture may be a brand new term for you, however it is a concept, philosophy and world that has been around since the turn-of-the-century. It means different things to different people, hence the beauty of the way an individual can design their own interpretation of physical culture. I describe it as, “a lifestyle of dynamic thinking, eating and moving.” At CROM we achieve this through a dynamic combination of physical fitness training and/or combat sports instruction, alongside nutritional and mindset coaching… A way of life that I’ve been experimenting and evolving with since I was in elementary school. Though a new phrase in my life, it is far from a new theory. In my research of how, why and when Physical Culture came about I realized that I have been embracing this lifestyle since I was eight years old. Getting involved with Tae Kwon Do (credit to my dad) at S. Henry Cho in NYC, back in the 80’s when TKD was very popular. Benching and bicep curls in my mom’s garage. Pull-ups on three different makeshift bars that I installed myself throughout the house, at my mom’s discontent. Basketball at the local playground until it was too dark to see the no-look pass headed towards the facial area. And the long distance BMX bike rides that my friends and I would take to look for the biggest hills to downslope at break-neck speeds. I fell in love with this culture 32 years ago and it’s been maturing ever since. Sometimes people don’t realize the importance of physical culture in their life. Fitness is not just an aesthetic philosophy for us…Every ounce of effort that we put in to the work that we do here at the gym, is designed to improve every function of every day life. What I would like to share is a
couple stories of how physical culture has not only inspired, but enhanced the lives of a couple of CROM members who dedicate their lives to keeping our city safe and strong. If you know Rockaway, it’s a town of many different varieties of lifestyles and what is prevalent here is our beloved first responder community of firemen, emergency medical technicians, police officers, sanitation workers and the like. Rockaway resident and NYPD Lt. David Poggioli joined our gym about eight months ago to learn Muay Thai and train CrossFit and in doing so he has made some major improvements to his life and growth in the physical culture community. Last weekend he was on a routine stop in Brooklyn where the occupants of the car happened to have a considerable amount of crack cocaine and cash in the car. Unfortunately for the perpetrator he decided to take off and run. The foot chase sent
our member through the streets of Brooklyn looking to apprehend and bring in the suspect in the best way possible. Obviously this is a common occurrence for the NYPD in any borough of New York City. It just so happened since our member was in plainclothes he coincidentally was sporting a huge CROM Physical Culture logo on his chest as he ran through the streets of Brooklyn. When he told me this story it hit home that we are turning out every day superheroes looking to keep our community safe and free of lost souls. As one of our longtime members/ coaches and close friends, Danny Quinn, one of New York’s bravest, has trained with us in hopes of bettering his life and those in the community around them. After serving as a NYPD officer over the last 8+ years, Danny recently made the switch and graduated from “The Rock”, NYC’s Fire Academy. Being put into a local firehouse in Queens, he is what they would call
a “probie.” As with any probie looking to make a name for themselves amongst their veteran peers, he’s been looking to test his training in a real-life scenario. Fortunately for the first couple of months that he’s been in the firehouse things were quite slow. However, just recently a house in Elmhurst Queens went up in flames and Danny and his team were the first guys in the house to make sure it was safe for the ladder company to move in and do their work. Fortunately there were no people in danger so the ladder crew had to just go through their routine duty of putting out the fire and keeping the other homes safe around it. During his first ever firefighting battle, our coach, friend and brother in arms felt empowered by all the training that he has put in the gym and was able to confidently do his job keep himself and fellow Bravest unscathed. Last but not least, Justin Durso, another one of NYC’s Finest, who has been winning his own battle to make physical culture an important part of his life for himself and his son, recently shared with us a great story from on the job. While on duty he was able to chase down one of two suspects that decided to run from the police after a robbery. He stated that because of his consistent training and progress with us that his ability to keep up and finally catch the perpetrator wearing 25+ pounds of gear in 90-degree weather was because of the hard work he puts in during our SHREDbyCROM classes. We take pride in empowering people from all walks of life, inspiring them to change their lives for the better while helping their community as well. Whether you are reaching on the top shelf for a can of corn at Waldbaum’s, running after your kids, or fighting fires and crime like these superheroes, physical culture is a part of everyone’s life!
101 Officers Rescue Distressed Jet Skiers According to NYPD News, Police Officer Matthew Carson and Christopher Carlino of Far Rockaway’s 101st Precinct, deserve some recognition for helping save some jet skiers from a fatal fate. Officers Carson and Carlino weren’t working as partners on Saturday night until they both responded to a call of two men who needed rescuing after their jet ski ran out of gas among strong currents. Police Officer Carson, who had been assigned to a nearby foot
post, heard the 911 call at approximately 8:47 p.m. and responded to Beach 9th Street and Seagirt Boulevard, but the current had carried the two men and their jet ski several blocks down the beach. Additional officers, including Police Officer Carlino, responded to the location and spotted the men in the water. One man held onto the jet ski while the other, who was adrift in the current, was wearing a loose life jacket that couldn’t keep him afloat. “His hands were going up in the
air as he was going under the water,” Police Officer Carlino told NYPD News. Knowing he had to act quickly, Police Officer Carson told Police Officer Carlino that he was going in after the man. “I came to the conclusion that this one guy wasn’t going to make it to the shore. It was my gut instinct to go into the water and make sure this guy wasn’t going to drown,” Police Officer Carson told NYPD News. Police Officer Carlino wasn’t going to let Carson go in alone.
Both officers, who are strong swimmers, left their gear with fellow officers on the beach and went into the water. Police Officer Carson, guided by a flashlight held by officers standing on land, made his way out to the man floating alone, and pulled him close to the shoreline where Police Officer Carlino grabbed him and brought him to the safety of the beach. Police Officer Carson reentered the water and retrieved other man and the jet ski. The two jet skiers, ages 21 and 28, were fatigued but unharmed.

THANK YOU ST. JOHN’S
“
I had my beautiful bundle of joy on Februar y 2, 2015 at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. I had some complications bringing her into this world but didn’t know how serious it was till after the C-section was done. This was because my nurses and doctors stood upbeat and were so caring and understanding and kept me calm. They explained everything and were very attentive. If I have another child St. John’s will be the place I will choose to give bir th. Thank you St. John’s from the bottom of my heart. – Jessica and Janessa Nydelsie Luina
