Belle Harbor Rehabilitation Project Kicks Off By Katie McFadden Several city agencies, elected officials, neighborhood representatives and other gathered on a hot Monday morning on Beach 131st Street to announce the groundbreaking of the Belle Harbor FEMA-funded rehabilitation project to address the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. The rehabilitation project will reconstruct damaged portions of sidewalks, curbs, roadways, sewers and water mains from Beach 127th
Street to Beach 149th Street. However the work isn’t limited to Belle Harbor. Work will also take place from Beach 9th Street to Seagirt Avenue in Far Rockaway, East 10th Road from Cross Bay Boulevard to the end of the street and a few other roads in Queens. A portion of the project, funded by Councilman Eric Ulrich, will include plant beds in front of the baffle walls on the beach to beautify the area and safety elements such as bollards at the end of the roadway. Preconstruction started in May. Officials such as Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg, Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Commissioner Dr. Feniosky Peña-Mora, representatives from FEMA, Councilman Ulrich, Senator Joe Addabbo Jr., a representative
for Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, Queens Boriugh President Melinda Katz, representatives from various civic associations and Community Board 14, gathered for the official groundbreaking of the project on Monday, August 17. “This project is the result of an inspiring collaborative effort amongst all levels of government and community leaders. I want to thank FEMA, our sister City agencies, local elected officials and civic associations for their invaluable support in helping this community recover and become stronger than ever,” DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said. The project is funded by a $10 million grant from FEMA, $1.1 million in City funding and $250,000 secured by Councilman Ulrich. The project is expected to be com-
plete by June 2016. “We are proud to have partnered with DOT, our Local Elected Officials and Community Stakeholders for the groundbreaking of the Belle Harbor reconstruction project. DDC is committed to Mayor de Blasio’s vision for a healthy and sustainable city and to building resilient projects that will protect New York City against extreme weather conditions,” Dr. Feniosky Peña-Mora, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Design and Construction said. Although Hurricane Sandy damaged many areas in Belle Harbor, the reconstruction of the roadways, sidewalks, sewers and water mains are a testament to our vision of enhancing our communities and contributing to the City’s growth.” Continued on page 9

CUOMO REQUESTS WAIVER FOR SANDY FEES Last week Governor Andrew Cuomo formally requested that the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julian Castro waive requirements that would force victims of Hurricane Sandy to pay back funds provided to them by NY Rising in order to receive additional FEMA and National Flood Insurance Program benefits. Under the Stafford Act, the Duplication of Benefits Requirement ensures that homeowners do not receive multiple federal benefits for the same purpose. Due to the lasting effects of Sandy, however, the governor requested the requirement be waived in this instance. “Waiving this requirement not just smart policy – it’s the right thing to do, Cuomo said. “In a matter of days, Superstorm Sandy turned millions of lives upside down, and many people are continuing to put back the pieces of what was lost. They deserve our full support, and I am urging HUD Secretary Castro to help us build back better. With NY Rising and the federal government processing thousands of claims, it would be inefficient and extremely costly for both parties and for affected citizens to institute to the pay back of funds, according to the governor’s office. As the Rockaway Times goes to press the waiver has not yet been issues by Secretary Castro.

ULRICH TO INTRODUCE VETERANS LAW FOR COMMUNITY BOARDS Local community boards may be going under an important change in the near future. Inspired by a Bronx community board that instituted one, Councilman Eric Ulrich has proposed legislation that would require all community boards to create veterans committees. “There are so many critical issues facing our veterans today, Councilman Ulrich said. “Convening veterans committees within community boards is one another small step toward spreading greater awareness and advocacy for our veterans who have so bravely served our country. The committee will include a chairperson and other members who will discuss issues pertaining to quality of life issues and other problems unique to veterans in their communities.

The Rockaway East Merchants Association (REMA) Annual Street Fair in Far Rockaway is this Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Beach 21st parking lot between Mott and Cornaga Avenues. We hope the NPS attends to these hanging threats before someone gets hurt. ***** It ain’t easy getting answers sometimes. Primary Day is September 10. You can try to navigate through the Board of Elections website to find out who might be running for what but you’ll likely give up in frustration. As far as we can tell there are vacancies for Judge of Civil Court in Queens but no one seems to be running in the primary. And besides an apparent lack of candidates, there are no other

All we can say is, Wow! ***** There was terribly sad news last Saturday as a 5-year-old boy drowned at Riis Park. The Lazer Speaks
Sandpipers Are Here, Summer’s Song… By Lou Pastina
Those little tiny birds with the long beaks that travel in packs along the shore, scampering with their stick legs have arrived, signaling the slow steady close of summer. This is the best time of year, with the water warmed from consecutive 90-degree days, a soft breeze, block parties, the sun setting just a little sooner each night. The clouds put on a show at this time of year, varying sizes, shapes and colors, illuminating the sky at dusk and dawn. As age would have it, this time of year also brings a bit of melancholy too, as the day fades toward eventual fall and winter, thoughts turn to friends and times of yesteryear. Music can especially add to this process, as can the last summer visits of friends and family who don’t have year round access to the shoreline, and unfettered views of sea and sky. They seem to come all together sometimes, and jumble up emotions, good and bad, but mostly good. When a particular song is playing, it’s easy to drift back and remember those that are no longer with us, and the times we shared
singing, dancing and playing with those we loved, but can no longer feel their physical presence. Yet we know they are still with us, because that soft, gentle breeze brings a scent vaguely familiar, triggering a memory dear. At that moment it is worth smiling and remembering all the good times of summers past. We look deep into the faces of friends and family and see those who can no longer visit by car, train or plane, but must come to
us through a shaft of light piercing a veil of clouds, or on whispering wind to remind us that they still know we are here and also like to visit with us. And they leave us sweet reminders that they were a part of our lives, that they are part of the very fabric that makes us who we are. Leaves start to turn every so slightly, here and there, and soon it will be time for a sweatshirt at night to combat the coming chill. But it will be a welcomed change.
This is the best time of year because the present and past mix so comfortably, and smiles come so easily. Yes music helps this process, because a chord will stir a feeling of remembrance and the sun will extend that musical phrase until the last fiery red glimpses over the horizon. The sandpipers are here, but their visit lasts for a while, so enjoy, soak it in, and remember all those that once were here too. Their visit always lasts too.

A Transit Hack
Just In Case The A Train Stalls (Again) By Rockawayist
Getting to and from Rockaway has never been easy, as any resident or visitor can attest. Daily ferry service was cancelled in 2014, although it is slated to return in 2017. Only half of the peninsula is served by a direct-to-Manhattan subway connection. Bus service is often abysmal, and isn’t calibrated to meet the increased demand of summer beach-goers. This year alone we have experienced paralyzing traffic jams, and a copper cable theft that resulted in the shutdown of rush hour subway service. While these are isolated incidents, the resulting chaos highlighted the need for improved transit and infrastructure options for the peninsula. Activists have been trying for years to reactivate the Queens Rail, a dormant branch of the LIRR. That line could potentially provide a 30-minute ride direct to Penn Station, and would also alleviate congestion along the Woodhaven Boulevard corridor. However, it is in competition with other high-
profile projects for MTA Capital Funding. There is an alternate rail option that already exists, with a common fare collection system in place. The AirTrain at Howard Beach, which connects A train riders to JFK Airport, can also be used to get to Jamaica Station. From there, commuters can connect to the Long Island Rail Road, or the F train. I tried it out recently. It’s not cheap, and you have to get to the Howard Beach station first. But it is a fast connection, and the easiest way into Manhattan when the A train is out of service. This could be an interim solution, to be used in emergency situations: extend the Rockaway Park shuttle to Howard Beach, and allow riders to connect to the AirTrain for a reduced fare. Making this happen requires very little other than the cooperation of the MTA and the Port Authority. What do you say, Governor Cuomo? (Follow Rockawayist at Rockawayist.com)

Repossessed Cars To Be Sold Off Banks Forced To Cut Their Losses
Brooklyn, NY – High repossession rates can be a crisis for many banks. When the bank repossess’ a vehicle they are forced to incur the cost of repossession of the vehicle and the cost of getting these vehicles to auction in order to sell them off. If the vehicle does not sell at the auction the bank has to return the vehicle to the storage lot and then attempt to sell at the next auction. Enormous transportation, storage and security expenses are incurred with this process. It has become harder for the banks to keep up with the repo rate due. Making it harder for the banks is the fact that dealers now have access to the tremendous amount of low mileage lease returns coming back every month. Additionally rental car companies now sell their rental car fleet directly to dealers. It is easier for a dealer to take a lease return or off rental vehicle and re-sell it rather than to deal with a repo and the title complications that can be associated with repo vehicles. This is what has created a crisis for the banks; too many repos, no one to buy them. The longer these cars sit, the bigger the losses are for the banks. “Well that is all about to change now” according to Richard Cappetta, General Manager at Kings County Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM.
and I think we can,” says Cappetta as he sits in his office at Kings County Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM on Flatbush Ave, “we will be selling repossessed, auction bought trade-in cars and even some rental fleet vehicles. No haggling; each vehicle is clearly marked for quick sale, first come, first sold.”
A Real Bargain “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for someone to come in and get a real bargain,” adds Richard Capetta. “Our staff has even told their families and friends to come down and we’ve notified some local churches and charities to come down as well to take advantage of these low prices. We want to make sure the local community benefits from this event. You’ll find all kinds of cars, trucks, vans and sport utilities from 6 months old to 6 years old.”

Airplane Concerns Dear Editor: Will the airplane noise ever go away? Residents in the Rockaway’s are frustrated from hearing airplanes flying over their homes so early in the morning and late at night. The big question is why can’t airplanes take a different pattern to avoid residential areas? It is very unsettling knowing so many aircraft are flying over our homes throughout the day. On many occasions I am woken up to a daunting sound over my home. What if an airplane crashes in our area, what are we to do? Is it fair that airplanes should fly over our homes just to use a quicker route? Another big concern is are these airplanes expelling unexpended fuel in our neighborhoods? This can be environmentally hazardous and toxic. I hope this is not the case. If airplanes could be made with quieter engines maybe it would not be so terrible and with no more airplane noise to complain about
this could help. Our neighborhood would be much more peaceful with fewer distractions from airplanes and their sometimes frightening sounds as they fly over. Octavia Willis
A Ferry Long Shot Dear Editor: (Regarding that ferry Kickstarter project) Mmmmm $2.1 million? Let’s see, there was $7 million that the committee for NY Rising (State Funds) along with residents agreed to put towards the ferry remaining in Rockaway. Seems the Mayor and Governor could just not get together, in order for that to happen. Hmmm, I just read about Kickstarter. Perhaps I am not understanding correctly. What I get from it is if the goal is not reached all the money is lost?? If goal is reached they (Kickstarter) takes a 5% of the money...From my understanding not only is the money necessary, the approval of the Mayor is necessary. Oh also, any area chosen for a dock must first be approved by the
proper city agency. I admire this young man’s intention but in my opinion there is must more involved in this ferry situation then he seems to be aware. Nice he sat down with the ferry operator, who I am sure would love to return in 2017. But the owner of Seastreak will not be the one making any decision on where dock would be located, availability of parking etc. Let me add there is now a process of bidding to determine what ferry service will return to Rockaway. All very involved and has been for a long time. My question WHY raise the money without first knowing the Mayor would allow SeaStreak to return in 2017? Linda Ruscillo
A For Effort Dear Editor: (Re: Ferry and kickstarter project) Ok, Sam Friedman’s idea about raising private money to get a ferry service going is farfetched but I like the gumption. He’s thinking, he’s trying. The rest of us are just waiting for 2017 with our fingers crossed. W. Tobin
Belle Harbor Rehabilitation Project Kicks Off Continued from page 3
“This groundbreaking marks another significant step forward in the post-Sandy rebuilding of Belle Harbor, and is in no small part due to the true collaboration between residents, local leaders and agencies, especially the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association, DOT and DDC,” Queens Borough President Melinda Katz said. “This Belle Harbor street rebuilding project will provide the neighborhood with upgraded and improved streets and sidewalks to enhance safety for both residing and visiting families. “This new construction effort will result in “World Class Access Points” on the beaches in Rockaway from 127th to 149th Streets, and will truly reflect what Rockaway is, one the greatest communities to live and work, throughout the world,” Hank Iori, President of the Belle Harbor Civic Association said.

“DFD” – Politically Incorrect? By Peter J. Mahon
Recently I was talking with a young woman from the far-off Isle of Manhattan regarding the recent transportation mess that resulted when thousands of people decided to visit the beaches in Rockaway on a July weekend when the heat index hit 100 degrees. During the course of our conversation I mentioned that I hadn’t seen that many “DFD’s” struggling to get through Broad Channel by car, bus or train for more years than I can remember. I was immediately, and seriously, chastised for the use of term “DFD” (“Down for the Day”) by the individual I was speaking with who loudly asserted that the term was both “personally offensive” and “non-inclusive” and that I should “think twice” before bandying about such terms. The look on the young woman’s face clearly indicated that she deemed my use of the term ”DFD” to be hurtful and deserving of an apology. I laughingly responded by advising her that I had always been of the opinion that the term “DFD” is nothing more than a colloquial expression used by locals to describe visitors or tourists who frequent our coastal area and beaches during the summer months. “Be that as it may,” she told me, “when other people visit your area and hear or read about themselves referred to as a ‘DFD’ it causes them distress and makes them uncomfortable. They feel like an outsider who does not belong and is not welcome. The term should be banned!” I realize we presently all live in a culture that encourages a methodology of distorted thinking that mandates everyone must think twice before speaking up, using emotional rather than objective reasoning lest they offend someone thus opening themselves up to charges of insensitivity, aggression or worse but being a gentleman and not wanting to continue the exchange of opinions which had
become measurably heated, I simply stated that we would have to agree to disagree and I left it at that. What the politically correct fail to understand, among many other issues, is that language is the result of an evolved social process that results in a systemic order achieved without the use of a deliberate overall plan. Language simply arises out of accidents, experiences, and historical borrowings and corruptions of other languages. For example, the term mankind is often said to be exclusive, misleading, and biased when it is employed to refer to both men and women. No one intended to exclude women when generic terms like he or mankind were used. With respect to human beings, the male gender was used to denote the species. On the other hand, both countries and ships are referred to as she. Using he or she or him or her simply clutters the language and conveys no further information. Nevertheless, according to the PC Police, in today’s culture such use implies that those who use such masculine terms hold hostile or exclusionary thoughts toward women! This leads people who were taught what to think rather than how to think about an issue to believe that every use of a generic male term serves as emotionally based evidence of male antagonism toward women when, in fact, such usage is merely avoiding awkward phrases and cluttered language. If we are not careful we may all wake up one morning and find that the Ministry of Truth has tossed the term “DFD” down the memory hole of George Orwell’s 1984 and replaced it with “TBE” (Temporary Beach Enthusiast)! Bobby Katz Completes Cross-Country Bike Trip where I went. I wasn’t expecting as much kindness as I received, but people went out of their way for me all over the place. Every day I saw friendliness and kindness,” he said. That kindness started almost immediately. The day before he started his journey in Washington, Katz had a dental mishap with a crown falling off. “I started making phone calls to dentists, thinking I wasn’t going to get anyone on a Sunday. I must have called 10 dentists. Finally one answered. They said they were going to church, but would call back later. After church, they called and told me to come in at 12:30 p.m. They pulled up in their car, opened up the office for me and put the crown back in,” Katz recalled. “I go out to pay for it and the dentist, Philip Madden, says, ‘just repay the good deed.’ This is a man who doesn’t come in on Sundays, who came in after church, and tells me there’s no charge.” In an odd coincidence, the crown fell out again as Katz was passing through Wisconsin. “I went to a bike shop to get my battery fixed for the bike computer and I asked if they knew a dentist. He said he had a friend nearby who could help. That dentist, Neal Potrykus also said, ‘no charge today,’” Katz said. During his journey, Katz stayed at inexpensive motels each night to recover and recharge. One in particular, the Country Bed and Breakfast in Falls, MN, stood out to him. When he arrived, a dirt road led to the antique home, which he couldn’t ride on, so the owner, Sally Barrott, picked him and his bike up in a pickup truck. She had asked what he wanted for dinner and cooked everything he had requested; a meal heavy with protein, carbs and salad, to get him ready for the next day. Continued on page 30

By Katie McFadden Forty-nine days, 3,620 miles, 14-pounds lost, just one man, age 64, and his bike. Belle Harbor resident Bobby Katz just returned from one epic bike trip across the country. On June 27, Katz flew out to the west coast, arriving at Bellingham Airport in Washington. He rode his bike 39 miles west, just to get to his starting point at Anacortes, WA. On June 29, he officially set out on his journey along the Northern Tier. “Just me and my bike,” Katz said. He only brought 35-pounds worth of gear, clothing, food, toiletries and other necessities. Using maps produced by the Adventure Cycling Association and a GPS, he navigated his way from coast to coast. Katz said he averaged 90.5 miles during his journey. His biggest trek was 148 miles through North Dakota. “I had a good tailwind, so I took advantage of it,” he said. Although Katz’s trip took 49 days, he says he only rode during 40 of them. He only took days off due to poor weather and to enjoy certain areas with his daughter, Marina, who flew out to meet him twice during his journey. One of those occasions was for a trip to Glacier National Park in Montana, but it was anything but a break. “We did four days of hiking. We did this really long hike on the Highline Trail, which is 12-miles long and goes along the spine of the continental divide. Looking at the scenery there was beyond belief,” Katz said of Glacier National Park. His daughter met him once again in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he took two days off. Despite traveling alone, Katz says the kindness of the people he encountered along the way was heartwarming. “I encountered wonderful people every-

Local Musicians to Perform at Fort Tilden ily, community, and the beach, really the best of life.” TrisNev expressed a similar personal sentiment. “Living where I do between Far Rockaway and Belle Harbor, I can feel the tension that is there, especially uptown,” he said. “Whether it’s from Sandy or just there I don’t know, but it has definitely influenced my writing.” B3ar agreed, saying “Sandy really started my music career off. It was such a dark time that the music became an escape.” All three artists said that they have something special for fans to see on Sunday. “My stage set-up is pretty unique,” Mauro said. “Nothing is played off a backing track, everything I do is played live.” With a drum machine, a bass synthesizer, and three keyboards, this is no easy feat. “I also bring a mixing board to control the volumes of all the different instruments and an effects box for my vocals. It’s all very danceable and fun but also musically interesting,” he said. TrisNev and B3ar are scheduled to release their first EP together, entitled Barely Sane, and are planning to have the artists they collaborated with join them on stage. “We’ll also have visual artists drawing and creating while we perform,” B3ar added. Fast Forward will be held at Studio 7 Gallery in Fort Tilden. Admission is $5.00, cash only.
By Dylan Watton
This Sunday, three young musicians with disparate styles but common connections and backgrounds will showcase their talents in a musical extravaganza at Fort Tilden. Hip hop duo TrisNev and B3ar (pronounced “bear”) and electronic musician William Mauro will present “Fast Forward” as part of the Rockaway Artist Alliance’s Sunday Music Series. “I’ve been playing piano since I was six,” TrisNev, whose real name is Tristan Nevirs, said. “My dad played guitar but I didn’t want to learn that from him. But I’ve always paid attention to the lyrics more in music.” Inspired by a wide variety of artists in various genres such as Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, MF Doom, and Oddisee, he began writing his own songs at the age of 16. TrisNev said he is most proud of his song “Feel the Music,” which was produced by B3ar and directed by his friend Christopher Dawkins. “It was a year in the making. To get the video out and to have people tell us what they think of it is very inspiring,” he said. His lyrics are often introspective and tackle issues such as police brutality and race relations. Mauro similarly started playing piano at six years old. “I didn’t really like music and its technical focus,
but I loved playing, so I studied jazz and theory instead,” he explained. “I played all types of percussion, especially the vibraphone, and I began improvising, which is now a major part of my live shows.” Eventually, Mauro moved on to using computer programs such as GarageBand and Ableton Live and purchased professional synthesizers, drum machines, and more to fill out his sound. “When I was 16, I released a single, ‘Diskokugel,’ under the alias Sarlat on a compilation with the artists Darius, Viceroy, Louis la Roche, and others, so that might be considered my first real public exposure,” Mauro said. B3ar has focused his efforts more on production, collaborating frequently with TrisNev. “I started DJing when I was around 17, and producing when I was 18,” he said. Influenced by other producers such as A

Track, he likes to incorporate multiple genres into his beats and hooks. “If I wake up feeling good that day the sound will be more upbeat,” he said. While he started making music in his teens, his stage name comes from a grade school girlfriend. “My boy Ginadi found a card in eighth grade that the girl wrote to me,” B3ar (real name Jeremy Mangano) said. “It said ‘Jer-Bear’ on it, and the name stuck.” All three musicians said they that have been deeply influenced by their time in Rockaway. Mauro said that while he lives and grew up in Manhattan, he has a long family history on the peninsula, including his greatgrandmother owning a business on Beach 109th Street called Krueger’s Sea Beach House. “Most of the live music I was exposed to was from Rockaway,” he said. “Even beyond the music, Rockaway means fam-

RWA Programs Develop Youth As a part of their mission to deepen the connection between the community and the waterfront, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, a local non-profit organization in the Rockaways, offered a number of summer programs for youth, Aqua 101 and Shore Corps, to build on environmental stewardship and community development to foster this connection. Shore Corps, a paid internship program for youth ages 15-19, occurs in three sessions summer, fall, and spring. The summer session focuses mainly on advocating for a better shoreline by doing various restoration projects. As a part of restoration efforts, interns partake in mapping the trees in Arverne East alongside the shoreline and planting trees that are native to
our area to create dunes. Jocelyn Dicent, vice chairman of Shore Corps and a student who has been with the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance for years, said, “I feel like this is the most productive summer I have experienced with RWA. From watering to mapping trees, all the students have been putting in their best effort in order to build up our dunes and protect the Rockaways from further storm damage.” Although the program takes a lot of dedication and hard work, it does a very good job at creating a fun atmosphere for the students. After the long mornings of tree mapping and watering, the interns get to participate in activities such as surfing, kayaking, and field trips to STEM related areas. Aqua 101, another program spe-
cifically for youth ages 11-14, establishes an easier set of activities for the students while still introducing them to the same concepts seen in Shore Corps. For example, these younger students participate in art projects, gardening, water safety lessons, surfing, kayaking, and the same field trips that Shore Corps would attend. Each year this program serves as a platform for younger students to gain interests in STEM, while also learning new skills and abilities such as swimming. “Aqua 101 is a unique program because it brings together kids from all different walks of life and gives them an amazing experience that fosters friendship and learning against all odds,” said RWA’s Program Assistant, Daniel Borrero. The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance looks forward to continuing these programs and introducing youth to environmental steward-
ship and community development. Special thanks goes out to The Pinkerton Foundation, National Fish & Wildlife, NY DEC, F&J, and Aviation Development for their support of these programs. For more information about these programs as well as other programs and events, please visit rwalliance.org.

The 1st NYC Youth Surfing Championships = SUCCESS! The historic first, of what will become an internationally recognized surfing contest, went down this last weekend with great success. Some veteran youth competitive surfers coming from Long Island and New Jersey to mix it up with our local talent, and our kids stood tall amongst the competition. A great turnout for this inaugural event saw some fantastic surfing in the small challenging conditions. Some of the standout surfers were CJ Mangio in the 10-Under division, whipping his board across lips, left and right.
Long Beach ripper Jack Richards in the 14-Under seamlessly picking off lefts and just smashing them, narrowly defeating local Pat Murphy who had a solid wave count. Sandon Karinsky got in some tight turns to take the 12-Under while Kailey Aiken in the Girls 12-Under got some of the longest rides of anyone. Thanks to all the contestants and their families for participating, along with Rick Anthony, Beach Marshall, for administrating yet another stellar event, Jeff Anthony, Head Judge for coaching and guid-
ing the surfers to “surf the waves, not just catch them”. Also thanks to volunteer judges Siobhan Mullen and VP RBSA Brian Beehler for great consistency in their scores. Points for this event will be posted this weekend on the rbsurfersassociation.org website, and mark your calendars for the next contest, Locals Surf School presents the NYC Youth Surfing Championships #2 September 26. Horseshoe Crabs Our Ancient Neighbors By Tim Burke Growing up in Rockaway Beach, horseshoe crabs were my neighbors. With a coastline that stretches approximately seven miles along the Atlantic Ocean, it is impossible not to come across a horseshoe crab somewhere along the way. With a hard rigid and pointed tail that is attached to a hardtop two-piece compartmental shell of a body with spidery legs, a horseshoe crab is instantly recognizable. It turns out that by some estimates the horseshoe crab has relatively remained unchanged for 250 million years and their direct ancestors date back almost 450 million years. They predate most species on the planet. As for the spidery legs, horseshoe crabs are actually related to the spider! They are not crabs at all, and are related to arachnids (spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites). They are the closest living relatives of the now extinct trilobites. “Trilobites were among the early arthropods, and by nearly any measure, arthropods are the most successful animals on the planet,” Dr. Sam Gon III says, a biologist and a devoted trilobitophile. HERE ONE MOMENT; GONE THE NEXT? Whereas that first moment has lasted millions and millions of years, today, their numbers are dwindling. Are horseshoe crabs a species that have survived the five great extinctions only to succumb to our errors and era? With a conservation status of lower risk but near threatened, the horseshoe crab is included on the Red List of Threatened Species. In correspondence with American Littoral Society’s Guardian of Jamaica Bay, Don Riepe said he believes humans to be the animal’s biggest threat, because of overharvesting and illegal harvesting in areas where they are protected. WHY SHOULD WE CARE? Studies on their eyes, blood, and shell have led to advances in biology and medicine. In the film, Crash: A Tale of Two Species, award-winning naturalist, Allison Argo exclaims, “Each day we’re finding more ways the horseshoe crab can help us.” Through their eyes, we have learned to see how the human eye works. Through their blood, we are able to protect our blood and body from contamination and threats from surgical procedures, medications and vaccinations. Studying their blood shows promise in our fight against viruses and cancer. Their shells help create lotions, contact lenses, and surgical sutures, as well as, help filter harmful substances from our water. Riepe echoed these very same thoughts in our interview as he
Page 19

continued with an explanation of why we should care. Horseshoe crabs “are literally a living fossil and a keystone species. Their blood is integral to the pharmaceutical industry which benefits populations worldwide.” In the film, Argo continued to stress the value and importance of the horseshoe crab, saying “There’s hardly a person alive who doesn’t owe thanks to the horseshoe crab.” However, the importance of the horseshoe crab doesn’t stop with us. Riepe states “their eggs are a vital source of nutrition for shorebirds migrating, especially the Red Knot whose numbers have seen dramatic decline in recent years.” In the film, Argo captures this fragile balance of nature, linking the birth, death and survival of the horseshoe crab and the plight of the red knot bird. The bird is revered for its migration and the incredible journey it makes year after year, from the tip of South America to the Canadian Arctic where it breeds. “Their journey is one of the wonders of the animal world, attracting scientists, birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide,” says Defenders of Wildlife, a group dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities. The red knots need to eat double their body weight to make that flight, so they feast upon the mighty horseshoe crab eggs. Defenders of Wildlife stresses that “one of the greatest threats to red knots today is a lack of horseshoe crab eggs to eat.” Don Riepe lists shoreline development as another threat to the horseshoe crab and red knot. “Protecting horseshoe crab populations [and habitats] are crucial for the marine ecosystem and human being!” exclaims EAI. EAI or Endangered Species International is an international organization “committed to reversing the trend of humaninduced species extinction, saving endangered animals, and preserving wild places.” Curbing shoreline development will protect the spawning grounds of the horseshoe crab. Protecting the spawning grounds of the horseshoe grab will protect the vital food source of the red knot and other migrating birds. Protecting the horseshoe crab will allow this cycle of life to continue. (Tim Burke serves as the Director of Administration for QSAC, Inc., a nonprofit social service agency for autism. He is currently wrapping up a Masters in Public Administration at Baruch College. This article is part of his paper on Horseshoe Crabs for his Animal Rights and Welfare Class in Topics in Public Policy).

Under HPD’s Arverne-by-the-Sea Homeownership Program, sponsors selected through a competitive request for proposals purchase City-owned land in Arverne, Queens and construct residential buildings which may also contain commercial space, parking, and/or community facilities. Construction financing is provided through loans from private institutional lenders and, in some instances, loans from public sources, including HPD, New York City Housing Development Corporation and New York State Housing Finance Agency. Additional funding may also be provided from the syndication of low income housing tax credits. The completed buildings provide rental housing or homeownership opportunities (as owner-occupied one-to-four-family homes or multi-family cooperatives or condominiums). This submission is a proposed amendment (“Second Amended Project”) to a project previously approved by the Mayor on December 10, 2003 (Cal. No. 27) (“Original Project”) as amended on June 25, 2008 (Cal. No. 22) (“First Amended Project”). The City conveyed the Disposition Area to Benjamin-Beechwood LLC (“Sponsor”) on May 24, 2004. Under the terms of the Original Project, the Sponsor was required, among other things, to construct (i) 580 residential buildings containing approximately 2,236 dwelling units and 160,000 square feet of ground floor commercial space (ii) six separate buildings containing a total of approximately 104,000 square feet of commercial space, (iii) a separate building containing approximately 30,000 square feet of community facility space consisting of a recreational center, (iv) open space for the recreational center, and (v) a separate building containing a school facility consisting of approximately 90,000 square feet. Pursuant to the proposed Second Amended Project, the required size of the school facility would be reduced to approximately 35,000 square feet. Al other terms of the Original Project, as amended by the First Amended Project would remain unchanged. The proposed Amendment to Land Disposition Agreement is available for public examination at the office of HPD, 100 Gold Street, Room 5-A4, New York, New York on business days during business hours. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that a public hearing will be held on September 9, 2015 at Second Floor Conference Room, 22 Reade Street, Manhattan at 10:00 a.m., or as soon thereafter as the matter may be reached on the calendar, at which time and place those wishing to be heard will be given an opportunity to be heard concerning the proposed sale of the Disposition Area pursuant to Section 695(2)(b) of the General Municipal Law and Section 1802(6)(j) of the Charter. Individuals requesting sign language interpreters should contact the Mayor’s Office Of Contract Services, Public Hearings Unit, 253 Broadway, Room 915, New York, New York 10007 (212) 788-7490, no later than five (5) business days prior to the public hearing. Diary Of A Fat Man
22 Ways My Life Has Changed By Bruce Bernfeld
1. No more naps. Rarely tired. I used to love taking naps. Guess I physically and psychologically needed them. No more! 2. Much more energy. Still not exercising but I feel I’m getting close. 3. Never feel bloated. And I never really feel hungry anymore. Great Daily Double! 4. More aware of my surroundings. Sugar must have been blurring my vision as well as my awareness! 5. Much more alert. Helps when I’m driving (I have never been that great a driver. A former co-worker of mine used to say that I drive like a shoemaker!). 6. Less muscle aches. At 68 you are very pleased when anything doesn’t hurt in the morning. 7. Spending much more time out of the house. Could have something to do with it being summer! 8. Self-esteem is way up. You really have to be kidding yourself if your self-esteem isn’t affected when you weigh 300 lbs. (unless you’re a lineman in the NFL). 9 Keener sense of humor. Just what I needed. The sillier, the better has always been my motto. 10. I’m much more boring. I realize instead of boring people with discussions of sex, drugs and rock and roll, I now bore them with talking about proteins, artificial sweeteners and quinoa! 11. Many more activities. Okay, not many more. 12. Great tan. Less of me to tan, so it doesn’t take so long! 13. Has cut down on my PMS. Huh? 14. The METS are in first place. Even though I’m a Yankee fan,
I can’t disregard how much my healthy living journey has paralleled the Mets’ rise to the top. 15. Bushy tailed. Huh? 16. Willpower. Fighting the urge to go up to fat people and tell them to stop eating so much has tested my will power. I really subscribe to the holier than thou way of life! 17. Much less hungry. I think I mentioned that already. Unfortunately my memory is still failing. 18. Never ever say: “It’s time to eat. I eat when I’m hungry, not when the clock says I should eat. Seems to make sense. 19. Learning how to read Nutrition Labels. There are really some hidden, evil things in food you may think are good for you. Check those labels for chemicals! 20. I do not have to carry TWO BOWLING BALLS around with me! Bowling balls are 16lbs each. I have lost 34 pounds! (I was never too good at math!). 21. I am finally listening to my doctor, Barbara Mandel. She told me to stop having intimate dinners for four.....unless there are three other people.
Negative Things:
1. Single handedly cut Mr. Softee’s net revenues by 17 percent. Poor guy.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 2015 this too shall pass. Personally, these are growing pains. When I say goodbye it will be difficult to hold back my tears and I will be so sad to lose my best friend but I must let her go. This is all part of life and growing up to be independent, successful adults is what we want for our children. We all want our children to be happy and content in life. Personally, I feel my job has been done and it is completely up to my children to maintain their own peace and happiness. I know they will break some rules, make mistakes and perhaps flounder at times but now they are expected to grow up. They are adults once they walk out of my house to
Letting Go The end of August is always bitter sweet. We never want to say goodbye to the summer and all the amazing beach days. It has been by far one of the best ones that I can remember and I have had many great summers in Rockaway. Students and teachers dread the end of summer. But all good things must come to an end and September can be one of the most beautiful months with all new beginnings. I am sending my last child off to college and will be empty nested. She is my only daughter and best friend. Life will be forever changed for both of us. It’s all good and I am so grateful to be able to give her the opportunity to go away but I will miss her dearly. I should be celebrating for the
freedom I will have but I will be sad to lose the most excellent years of our lives. Meanwhile, the next four years will hopefully be the best years of my daughter’s life. She will meet so many new people from all walks of life and this will most certainly change her. I like her just the way she is right now however change is inevitable. Hoping it’s a positive change. So the work is to detach and let go. Life is constantly changing and going with the flow is so much easier and healthier. Nothing remains the same, the only thing constant is change! (I stole that one.) We prepare our whole life for this moment and yet when it comes we tend to be extremely emotional and attached. It’s completely normal to have these feelings and
The Rockaway Times live on their own. I will miss my children but they are now prepared to go out in the world and help make it a better place. I pray that they will be safe, happy and content with all they have in this precious life. There are no guarantees and life will prove to be really hard at times. My wish is for all the children and their parents to be happy today and take one day at a time. Let the past be the past and let go! Let go and your children will soar! They were never ours forever. Happiness can be found in detachment. May you be happy, may you be free from suffering and may you be enlightened.
Welcome Back Peninsula Library In yet another sign of Rockaway’s recovery, Peninsula Library has finally reopened. The Queens Library branch located at Beach 94th Street opened the doors to it’s rehabilitated building on Tuesday, August 18. With six feet of water destroying the building and its contents during Sandy, the library had been closed since the storm and was operating out of a temporary trailer located outside of the building. With a nearly $4 Million in grant money, the building was repaired and renewed. The newly re-built library
features all new decor, furnishings, computers, a brand new collection of books, DVDs and other materials for loan. There is a new self-service return station where people can return items 24/7. There are two new meeting rooms, new classrooms, a teen lounge, a computer room and more. The Adult Learning Center has also been expanded. The building also includes resiliency features to make it less susceptible to damage from future weather events. Peninsula Library is open Mondays through Saturdays.

Steeplechase Miniature Railroad By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & Daughter, Katie Lucev Visitors to the Steeplechase Boardwalk were amazed to find a double track miniature steam railroad that ran the length of the
ocean promenade. A few times a train derailed onto the beach but no injuries were heard of. A hurricane in 1903 ended the short run of the Steeplechase Railroad. The ride was never rebuilt.

Build A Rolling Island
By Artie Wallace One of the hardest rooms in a home to organize is the kitchen. No matter what you do it seems you always need a little more space. Well this week we are going to work on getting that space. The two most common complaints about kitchens are not enough cabinet or counter top space. One solution is a rolling island. Sure you can go out and buy one, but then you wouldn’t be showing off your creativeness. So lets look at how you can build your own. The average DIYer with a medium skill level can tackle this project. To start off you will need to do a little shopping around to find a base cabinet that is a close match to your kitchen cabinets. I recommend 30 inch or larger for homemade islands. Then you will need a few two-by-fours and a set of four heavy-duty wheels (two straight and two locking swivels) and a few one-by-twos. Standing the cabinet upside down on the floor, measure the space inside the base from left to right. You will need to cut two of the two-by-fours to fit. Screw them in from the outside of the cabi-
net base. Then measure the space from front to back between the two-by-fours and cut two for the sides and screw them in. Making sure to keep the locking wheels both on the right side or the left, screw the wheels on. Now for the countertop. You can buy a Formica top and cut it to size, or you can buy a piece of hardwood and make your own top. Some stores will even cut it for you. Make sure you leave about one inch all around for overhang. Be sure to sand the edges so there are no sharp corners. To install your countertop you first need to cut the one-by-twos and screw them in near the top (like you did with the two-byfours on the bottom). For a Formica countertop, you will screw up through the one-by-two into the countertop to secure it. For a wood top, you can nail it in from the top, but be sure to countersink the nails. There you have it, you just built your own rolling island. Tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com

Shore Garden Club On Floral Arrangements
By Robin Shapiro The Shore Garden club loves flowers!! If you’re interested in joining call our President Elaine Shein ( 7189455519)! This past week we had a wonderful speaker who gave us an hour and a half demonstration on designing some amazing floral arrangements . Whether you’re buying flowers at a florist shop or local supermarket , or picking them from your own garden is just

another way for you to enjoy the beauty of flowers. My favorite displays are always a simple grouping of petite flowers found in my gardens. I’ve always loved combining herbs and flowers in to a mini bouquet. By adding mint (which grows like a weed) to most groupings, I include the sense of smell to the visual beauty of a floral arrangement. Another enjoyable hobby of mine is collecting a variety of small vases- most
of them bought at garage sales and vintage shops ! It’s a challenge to complement each bouquet with the perfect vase. There’s no right or wrong and as long as the end result is pleasing to you you’re a success! I like to limit my bouquets to three colors- my favorites have always been purple, pink and yellow. My front garden has only these three colors, plus a background of green. Bouquets are also stunning when they are all the same colors but with different variety of flowers. Try a simple bouquet of hydrangeas- this same flower comes in a hue of colors. There’s nothing
prettier! Black-eyed Susan’s and daisies with a sprig of mint tends to brighten everyone’s day! Yellow, the color of sunshine, never ceases to bring a smile. Soon the Montauk daisies will be in bloom. They tend to explode at the end of August when other flowers in ones garden are starting to wane. No matter what’s in bloom picking them and bringing them inside is always an adventure! Here are some of my favorite mini bouquets and assortment of vases!

An Epic Ride
Bobby Katz Completes Cross-Country Bike Trip Continued from page 11
“It was the best meal I had in 10 years, he said. Katz set out on his daily trips during early morning hours, to avoid brutal sun and temperatures. When he told Barrott he’d be setting out at 5 a.m., she had a full breakfast waiting for him at 4:30 a.m. “When I left, she gave me a big hug, Katz said. Despite eating well along his trek, it was never enough. “I ate around the clock. I normally eat healthy, but I was eating fattening foods like cheese, peanut butter, everything you need to maintain protein and weight. But no matter how much I ate, my body couldn’t absorb the calories fast enough to offset the amount of work I was doing. I lost 14 pounds. I left at 135 and came back 121, he said. Katz says he had very minor bumps along the road. He only got two flat tires and changed his chain once, just as a precaution. “I was very blessed with the weather. I only got caught in the rain twice, he said. He also says he never fell off or had any accidents. He did have a scary mo-
ment while traveling through Montana. “It was very early in the morning and the sun was in my eyes, so I couldn’t see very well. I saw an obstruction in the road. My habit is not going very far to move out of the way, but as I was passing this obstruction from eight inches away, I saw it was a coiled up snake. It didn’t move, but it was alive and had to be four feet long. It freaked me out because I’m so scared of snakes. If I knew what it was, I would’ve moved more. His biggest challenge came close to home. “Route 6 in Pennsylvania was the most demanding, most difficult road. More difficult than anything out west, he said. The 400-mile path was marked with signs indicating that it was a usable bike path, but Katz quickly found out why no other bikers were using it. “It was a very nice, scenic route past the Allegheny Mountains, but there were sections where you’re climbing for seven miles at a time. I thought when I passed the mountains, I would pass the worst of it, but it continued

for the entire 400 miles of PA. It wiped me out, he said. Katz says he made the trip from west to east, because he wanted his home in Belle Harbor to be his final destination. On the last day, he set out from Englewood, NJ and traveled 34 miles through Manhattan and Brooklyn, until he reached home on the morning of Monday, August 17. “I really savored the last 34 miles of this journey. It was enjoyable, but as I rolled up to my house, it felt like I could exhale. I was finally able to relax, he said. The trip took him
exactly seven weeks. Katz was greeted by neighbors who had made welcome signs for him, and balloons from his daughter. Katz, a long-distance cyclist since age 19, says he had wanted to do the trip for a long time. “I enjoy challenges. Like when people ask, ‘why did you want to climb a mountain? It was there.’ This was something I wanted to do because it was a great challenge. I love scenery. I love cycling. To do a trip like this, you have to love cycling. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but it was very enjoyable and gave me a wonderful feeling of
The Rockaway Times accomplishment, he said. After retiring from a 35-year teaching career when he was 56, he was in a better position to take such a trip. “I was in a position, where I could do it the right way, financially, he said. Between motels, food and other expenses, Katz estimates he spent about $7,000 on the trip. It wasn’t the first time he had attempted the trek. “Three years ago, my son, Jesse and I, attempted it. We flew across the country and were going to ride together. We did about 300 miles when Jesse’s knees got so inflamed, we had to stop. We left NY together and we were going to go home together, so we just explored the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River and the National Parks out there before we flew home, he said. The following year, Katz set out alone for the trip. “I had done about 1,000 miles. In Montana, I got struck by a motor home. I broke my collarbone. My son flew into meet me and we went back home. Third time’s the charm. Katz recommends the ride, saying it’s the best way to see the country. “When you’re traveling by bicycle, you’re traveling at just the right speed to remember everything you see. You’re at a much higher state of alertness than when you drive. You don’t miss anything when you’re on a bicycle. You see it all and remember it because you’re not passing by too quickly. Would he do it again? “This was a one time thing, he said. “I don’t want to lose 14 pounds again. Katz is back home and recovering from his epic trek, but says he’ll be back on his bike soon. Even though he likely won’t be going cross-country again, he recommends doing others do so. “I recommend it to anyone who really loves cycling and loves beautiful scenery and wants to see the country the right way, he said. “The United States is really a great country.

Ideas for
Reducing Lanes Does Not Reduce Traffic. Duh Queens Chronicle Editorial 8/13/15 – Reprinted with Permission It’s official: Woodhaven Boulevard now has dedicated bus lanes from Metropolitan Avenue to Alderton Street and Dry Harbor Road, and as they run right in front of this newspaper’s offices, we can tell you firsthand the results are not looking good so far. And we expect worse to come. Of course traffic is more congested when you have fewer lanes, as drivers now do during both the morning and evening rush hours, in both directions. Only the true believers who want to get people out of their cars would contend otherwise. So we now have a handful of employees who commute home to South Queens from our Rego Park offices stuck in traffic longer than they were before. Their reports as to how bad it is do vary — along with the times they hit the road — but one says her former 45-minute commute has been closer to 90 minutes. She’s actually started taking the Van Wyck Expressway to the Belt Parkway to get back to Howard Beach, a route that looks insane on a map but actually has been eating up less of her time. Others are hitting the side streets to go north and south, surely something the residents on those blocks are not thrilled to see. But of course a key point of installing bus lanes is to frustrate drivers enough so they either take another route or start riding public trans-
Page 31
THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 2015
portation. The advocates of lane reduction surgery generally don’t admit that, but one elected official we recently spoke with did, and that’s someone who supports the bus lanes. Get ’em off Woodhaven and onto the Van Wyck, off Queens Boulevard and onto the Long Island Expressway — that’s the thinking. Or, best of all, get them onto buses. That’s great for those who can or want to take the bus, but many need a car, van or truck for their job; and few like being forced onto public transportation by the anti-car crowd whose thinking is taking over the government. So whereas southbound traffic outside our offices by 62nd Road used to start getting heavy around 4 p.m., we’ve been seeing it back up around 3 lately. Meanwhile buses are often roaring by in the right-hand lane, clearly above the speed limit at times, making things more dangerous for people who are turning, parking or trying to leave a space. Our staff tells us their drivers are also noticeably more aggressive now that they have their own lane, even though you have every right to use it when parking or making a turn. And things are only set to get worse. The bus lanes we have now are the result of the city’s Congested Corridor study of Woodhaven. But even as they’re being completed, the city is plotting Select Bus Service along the entire Woodhaven-Cross Bay Boulevard corridor, reaching
down to the Rockaways and even up to Woodside, via Broadway. With SBS, not only will we lose a lane each way — a different one than has been lost here in Rego Park, because the city loves nothing more than tearing up a recent project to install a new project — but we’ll have the added insanity of multiple leftturn bans forcing 18-wheelers onto side streets and people waiting for buses on the median. You try driving a 53-foot tractor trailer from northbound Woodhaven Boulevard onto 85th Road and then south on 90th Street just to go west on Jamaica Avenue. Or standing in the middle of Woodhaven on a snowy day as vehicles slide around on both sides of
you. Not fun. Yet that’s what the city Department of Transportation intends. No wonder Woodhaven’s civic and business leaders are out collecting signatures in opposition to the planned left-turn ban onto Jamaica Avenue. Expect more dissent to emerge over time. Meanwhile we can’t wait for school to start, because that surely will reduce the traffic we’re seeing. OK, sarcasm off. Queens is not Manhattan and should not be treated as if it is. May public opinion limit the damage that’s to come. Got an idea for Smarter Transportation? By Rebekkah Thompson Last summer, Rockaway friends and I yard-hopped, helping neighbors with growing veggies. With community grants, funding was provided for soil, seeds and gardening tools. I expected this growing season to pick up where we left off and to learn more, plant more, and yield more collectively. Interestingly, this growing season had me getting my hands dirty, but not as I had envisioned. I got off to a late start with my gardening. Tackling weeds and grass densely taking root just wasn’t a big motivator. From where I stood at my front window, I was overcome with overwhelming feelings. These feelings did not make me want to charge out into the yard with a weed whacker. I retreated and looked for easier jobs to get done around the house or someone else’s for that matter. (It’s always easier to be the helper for someone else’s problem, and of course two heads are better than one.) With all the friends I made last year in the Rockaway Backyard Collective, I couldn’t bring myself to post on Facebook, “Hey, I need help!â€? Then the blessing that comes with giving arrived. I don’t know about you, but I have always noticed that when you give without expecting to receive, you receive above and beyond your expectations or imagination. Well, the first gift came from my visiting father who cleared the soil for planting. The next gift came from a neighbor who had too many wild cherry tomato plants growing. He gave me four, which are growing and yielding nicely and so tasty. Even with all of this, I let the yard become overrun with weeds due to severe back pains that came out of nowhere. But here it came ‌ another gift! Again the yard was weeded and tidied up. I thought I should be ashamed of myself, but I learned something about my final gift giver. He is a native of Trinidad and had a farm. Since moving to America several years ago, he has been disconnected from the soil, living mostly in apartment buildings. He said he was so happy to get into the dirt and thanked me for the opportunity.
With my personal gardening taking care of itself, I wondered what my role was supposed to be this growing season? Little did I know a project awaited me to invest time and energy planting and nurturing. A friend of mine asked me to pop into a local church needing some advice on community grant writing and developing youth programming. An informal and casual discussion quickly snowballed into a summer youth program, specifically, designed for male youths residing in the St. John’s Home for Boys. For 25 years this church, God With The Family, located at 112-34 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, has struggled with outreach efforts to residents in poverty, addiction, homelessness and youths lost to Rockaway streets. This summer, Pastor Teresa Ortega had to do something bold and fast as she watched young men loitering in front of her storefront church either high and/or aimless, which leaves lots of room for trouble. We created the “Power to Live program offering young men job opportunities with the help of Habitat for Humanity, residents and other local churches. In addition to matching the youths with jobs, they attend career training and literacy skills development workshops. What is, especially, attractive to these teens and young adults - removed from their homes or the streets and mandated to live in the boys’ home - is the communal breakfast and lunch. One youth said, “I like that we eat like a family. Pastor Teresa often makes homemade food for lunch too. I now understand why I had to receive these earlier gifts that I was first uncomfortable with receiving. I like being the “gifter. However, in order for me to give to this new project – planting and nurturing, I had to allow myself to be blessed in order to let something grow. Power to Live is in the process of incorporation. Church God With the Family is the fiscal sponsor. If you also enjoy gifting, stop in for more details on how you can help support this needed youth employment and empowerment program.

Bike Adventures
Bike Ride Adventures: The Very End By Katie McFadden There are no limits to where an adventurer can go, but on Monday, I decided to go to one of the absolute limits of the peninsula. Located at the very end of Breezy Point, some may call it the tip, the Breezy Point Jetty, “the rocks,” “the Other End,” or a number of other nicknames. Wanting to beat the heat of the day, I started my adventure at around 8:30 a.m. I thought it would be a quick, straightforward trip, shooting up to Breezy Point on a bike, but I hadn’t realized the five-and-a-half mile trip was actually my longest yet, and would include an additional hike. The morning was cool, crisp. It almost felt like autumn, sending a reminder that despite our desperate attempts to will it away, fall will soon take over. The cool morning made the early ride very pleasant. I rode past Belle Harbor, took the path of the Riis Park boardwalk, headed from Fort Tilden toward the Marine Parkway Bridge and turned left onto the

main road heading toward Breezy Point. The bike lanes along the main road are some of the best I’ve seen. They’re well defined and spacious. You can actually ride along without getting in the way of traffic. When you pass the tollbooth into Breezy Point, this changes slightly as the lanes get less defined and smaller, but car traffic in the private, residential community doesn’t move very fast. I took a straight path along the main road until I saw a sign on the bayside, indicated where the Breezy Point lighthouse and the 9/11 Memorial are located. I headed toward the bay to take some photos of the landmark “lighthouse,” which isn’t actually a lighthouse at all. The structure is a Fire Control Tower, which has been around since WWII. With boats on the beach, Jamaica Bay, Coney Island and Manhattan in the background, it makes for an interesting subject for photographs.

I continued along the bay until I found the entrance ramps to the 9/11 Memorial. Despite it being nearly 14 years since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, I don’t think I had ever been to the Breezy Point memorial, which beautifully honors the lives of the 29 members of the community that lost their lives in the attacks. The memorial is in such pristine condition, it looks like it was built yesterday. Long wooden ramps lead to the main section of the memorial, a rectangle area that overlooks the Manhattan skyline and contains 29 glass panels for each person who died. To the left is a large cross, made of steel from the World Trade Center. To the right is a large American flag. It is another very scenic area, great for photos. I can imagine the best come during sunset. During my early morning visit, I took advantage of the serenity of the area. I sat down on one of the benches, took out my headphones, and listened as the bell of a buoy on the bay, gently tolled, like an unintentional part of the memorial. Looking out onto the skyline,
heat picked up. I thought I would be relieved to find the jetty right at the exit of the pathway. Wishful thinking. Once I got to the beach, I saw that to get to the tip was an extra hike in itself. I was discouraged. As I started walking toward the jetty in the distance, I kept telling myself to turn back around. I could just phone it in, right? Say I made it there? No one would know. There was no one else on the beach to call me out on it. But knowing that I would later be interviewing a 65-yearold man who had just completed a cross-country trek by bike, I sucked it up and forged on. Aside from the fact that I was running out of time to get back for said interview, I had no excuses. If not in a hurry, the walk can be an enjoyable one. The beach out there looks like it could be on another planet. For those who like bird watching, there were some notable species. I don’t know what the seagulls out there are eating, but it might be steroids. Every single one was massive. There were also sandpipers and terns, which told me to keep my distance with their squawks
where the new World Trade Center now stands, I took a few moments to reflect on that tragic day nearly 14 years ago, and prayed for the fallen. I left before the emotions could take over. Back on the main road, I continued until I reached the Breezy Point Surf Club and I couldn’t go any further. I asked the young man in the booth how I could get to the jetty at the tip. He kindly directed me, advising me to lock my bike and follow the sandy path that is designed for ATV’s. As I started to walk, it wasn’t soon before I started wishing there had been an ATV rental station at the beginning of the path. My editor warned that it would be some hike to the tip. He wasn’t kidding. Had I known just how long, I would have worn sneakers instead of my flip-flops. While walking the winding sandy path toward the beach, the
and chirps. When I finally got to the jetty at the tip, it was a rewarding feeling. I felt like I had climbed to the top of a mountain. I couldn’t go any further on the peninsula. Well, I could have, but I decided to err on the side of caution. I wanted to walk all the way out to the end, but unfortunately I had arrived at high tide and the waves crashing long the tip of the jetty, made me change my mind. Wearing my flips flops, I figured there was a pretty good chance things wouldn’t turn out well if I tried to navigate along the slippery rocks to the very end. I like adventure, but I value my life, as well. I went about halfway and took everything in. The last time I saw the ocean meet the bay, was on October 29, 2012. Seeing the two bodies of water join around the jetty, inContinued on page 40

The Line Is Now Drawn On Sunday August 16th we gathered at the Rockaway Beach shore line to draw a line in the sand! The line was drawn to let Governor Cuomo know that many people on the Rockaway Peninsula and beyond want him to Veto Port Ambrose, the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) port planned just 24 miles off the shore of the Rockaway peninsula. We were joined many elected officials, neighbors, civic leaders and representatives from The Rockaway peninsula and beyond. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and Senator Joe Addabbo were on hand to assure us that our voice and our desires for a veto would be made known to Governor Cuomo. Also on hand was Dan Brown of Queens Borough President Melinda Katz office to read a letter from Melinda, supporting

our efforts to have the Governor veto Port Ambrose. Our day began on the beach as we went blanket to blanket gathering signatures on petitions asking the Governor to Veto Port Ambrose. We had a base set up at 91st on the beach with lots of materials and info on LNG and 0(/4/ "9 $!. "2/7.
how to contact the Governor. We also had beachgoers sign our huge banner with a message to Governor Cuomo: “CUOMO, VETO PORT AMBROSE. Jessica Roff, of Catskill Mountainkeeper and one of our events biggest organizers, was answering many questions on the dangers of LNG off our shores. She spoke of the dangers to our environment that an LNG Port would bring, from the possibility of a massive leak of LNG during the de-liquefying process and dangers of a having massive gas ships the size of the Exxon Valdez and how Port Ambrose would be way too close major shipping channels and JFK airport. The best question I heard asked was, “Where would these giant tanker ships loaded with LNG go if a Sandy strength hurricane were to hit the planned Port and the Long Island- Rockaway peninsula shoreline? Another great question was, “Will Long Island and Rockaway First Responders be funded and trained on how to deal with a potential LNG disaster? Unfortunately, folks, these are just a couple of the many questions that no one can seem to answer! Perhaps if you find the time please call the Governor and ask him these tiny little questions,

maybe he has the answers. While you’re at it ask him to veto Port Ambrose! A special thanks to all of the sponsors of our amazing event, especially Lola Star, Playland Hotel, Caracas Rockaway and Thai Rock for their super generous donations to help make the event happen. Thanks to Rockaway Wildfire, Sane Energy, Rockaway Beach Surfers association, Catskill Mountainkeeper, The Rockaway action Center and Friends of Rockaway Beach. Thank you to Jessica, for loving the Rock so much and all the Volunteers and supporters in DRAWING A LINE IN THE SAND!!!! If you did not get a chance to sign our huge banner calling on Cuomo to Veto Port Ambrose, which will send to the Governor, please check in with Friends of Rockaway Beach on Facebook to see where we will be next. stead of from my front porch, was a better vantage point. I watched as a few fishing boats passed by and was surprised that no fishermen were on the jetty with me. I had passed this jetty by boat on a few occasions and often saw fishermen casting their lines off the tip. Today, I was alone. Except for a few of the steroidal seagulls that flew overhead or perched on the rocks. I wanted to stick around, but I had run out of time. So much so that I started running back along the beach. I don’t run. If you see me running, you should run too, because something is probably chasing me. In my case, it was a deadline. I had to get back to the office for that interview. If you’re going to adventure to the very end of the peninsula, make sure you set aside plenty of time to do so. My whole adventure, round-trip, took me more than three hours, and that’s from rushing. Be kind to your ankles during the hike; wear sneakers. If you have an ATV or a friend with one, I’d recommend using it along

Opponents of LNG Draw A Line On Sunday, August 16th, more than 60 Rockaway residents, business owners, and their elected officials; members of community and advocacy groups; and beach goers and allies gathered on the beach, at the B. 91st Street in Rockaway Beach, to draw a figurative line in the sand from their community to Long Beach, Long Island, where last Sunday residents also voiced their opposition to Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Project at a parallel Line in the Sand event. “It is critical for Governor Cuomo to hear directly from the people of the Rockaway peninsula, who will be among the communities most affected by this project, that we are opposed to Port Ambrose, said John Cori, Friends of Rockaway Beach co-founder, Rockaway Beach resident, and an organizer of the Line in the Sand Action. Sunday’s action drew participants from across the Rockaway peninsula, Long Island, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, and included business owners and elected officials as well as many beach goers. Participants heard from community leaders about the risks
associated with Port Ambrose and liquefied natural gas. Attendees wrote postcards, signed giant banners, and signed and circulated petitions around the beach urging the Governor to veto Port Ambrose. “The proposed Port Ambrose LNG project is simply not worth the risk to our families and to the beaches and waterways vital to our economic growth, said Assemblymember Phil Goldfeder. Bringing unstable LNG to Rockaway’s shores would jeopardize the safety of thousands of families, pollute our fragile marine environment, and threaten nearby JFK Airport. I again call on Governor Cuomo to veto Port Ambrose and put a stop to this dangerous proposal. State Senator Joseph Addabbo said, “Whether we look at the proposed LNG port as an environmentally dangerous project, a safety and security risk, or a project with no benefit to my constituents, nor true need for a liquid natural gas offshore facility at this time, this project should be stopped in its tracks and not be approved. “New York State cannot afford to accommodate the natural gas
industry considering the immense environmental costs associated with the extraction, production, and transportation of natural gas in any state, Council Member Donovan Richards said. “We need Governor Cuomo to do the right thing and veto the Port Ambrose project. Council Member Richards was unable to attend the event, but has been a vocal opponent of Port Ambrose and is leading the City Council in it opposition to Port Ambrose. “This it Governor Cuomo’s moment to make the right choice for the people of the Rockaways, and the rest of New York City and State, said Jessica Roff, Catskill Mountainkeeper Programs Man-

ager, and an organizer of the action. “It is time to commit to a renewable energy future and to stop investing in dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure. The Governor must listen to New Yorkers and veto Port Ambrose. The U.S. Maritime Administration has stopped the clock on the regulatory process due to information deficiencies and extensive comments. Once the agency has issued a final Environmental Impact Statement, which is expected to happen by the end of the summer, Governor Cuomo and Governor Christie both have 45 days during which either official can legally veto the project.

Big Beach Cleanup Clears 300 Pounds of Trash
The Rockaway Times
BARS & GRILLS As The Rockaway Times expands its menu, so to speak, we thought it’d be a good idea to help you find the places that offer food and drinks. Or those that offer one but not the other. Bon appetit. Cheers. And here’s looking at you.
Roughly 400 volunteers helped out at one of the biggest beach cleanups in New York City on Saturday, August 15. The Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, now in its ninth year, and the Surfrider Foundation, teamed up for the massive effort, which started on Beach 67th Street. The Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, helps keep beaches, rivers, parks and lakes across America “barefoot friendly.” Saturday’s cleanup was one of 12 nationwide events. Since its inception, the project has cleared more than 15 tons of garbage from
American beaches. The volunteers gathered at 11 a.m. on Saturday for the cleanup. Some notables participated such as Katrina Bowden (formerly of 30 Rock and currently in the upcoming TNT show Public Morals), and Bethany Watson from Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. The volunteers removed more than 300 pounds of garbage from the beach, from Beach 67th to Beach 80th Streets. The volunteers were treated to an after party at the Bungalow Bar, which served surfinspired food and drinks by Barefoot Wine.

117 Shack Undefeated Champions! By Bert Sanders After long weekends protecting record crowds from the infamous Rockaway rip currents, hundreds of Rockaway Lifeguards meet in Riis Park for softball on Monday evenings. Summer spirit knows no bounds as teams from Uptown, Downtown, Midtown, 117, 106 and even Riis Park face off each week. This year, one team accomplished something that has not taken place in decades. With their nail biting 2-1 win over Uptown, 117 Shack accomplished an undefeated perfect season. Beach 117 Shack’s storied season has its roots in 2012, when the team crowned the youngest manager in lifeguard softball history. Jimmy Buckley turned a team in shambles into a juggernaut in only two seasons. His calm, confident attitude was a strong contrast to the previous manager’s aggressive approach. Along with his flawless fielding and gritty work as a leadoff hitter, Buckley, who is still in college, connected with a ragtag group of rookies and veterans and put together a perfect season. “This team had it all,” Buckley said. “Big bats in the middle of the lineup, solid defense, a deep bench,
and veteran leadership on the mound.” These big bats were led by the three hitter Jason Perrone, who put several balls out of the park, causing headaches for both the opposition and Q22 bus drivers. The cleanup hitter “Doughboy” put on several pounds in the offseason to increase his power to right center. The power came, but the base running suffered. Contributions in the field and in the two spot came from 14-year veteran Bobby Butler, who played the entire season barefoot. His tworun homer in the semis opened up the floodgates in the 14-4 romping of Pat Connolly’s Midtown Allstars. Another veteran, “Pauly G” brought his Broad Channel grittiness to the team. His game saving, over-the-shoulder diving catch in week five sent a strong message to the entire league: 117 does not roll over. Every storied team makes some solid pickups along the way. The midseason pickup of Steve Pulkowski made a great team even greater. The higher ups truly gave 117 Shack an advantage when the championship MVP came to the team. He retired seven in right center, and drove in both of 117’s
runs. Another solid pickup was Ecuadorian slugger Pablo Espinal, who rose from the bench midseason to take over in right. All great teams need great character. Eight-year veteran “Espolicious” provided solid play in both right center and second base. More importantly, however, was his winning swagger, which made 117 a clear favorite amongst the female fans in attendance. Bench coach Jose Lora, who spoke through an interpreter, described Espo as “stunning” and “incredible.” The bottom two of the batting lineup provided key runs in both of 117’s come-from-behind wins. Clinton “Sniper” Moran, had three runs batted in when 117 Shack overcame a 7-1 deficit to beat Midtown early in the season. Tommy “Tennis” Tyne proved to be the bench player that the team needed. Said left fielder Bobby Butler, “His swing looked very feminine, but it got the job done consistently. I expected very little of Sniper and Tyne, but they proved me wrong.” There were also some horns that
provided depth on the bench. Pitching wins championships. The team owes a great deal of its success to its bold leader on and off the field. Kev provided a solid season of fielding and pitching. His intimidating stare and his quick paced pitching style struck fear into the heart of opponents. He also, however, struck fear into the entire team. Hours before the big game, it seemed he would be a no show. In fact, the team had to hand the ball over to its oldest player Mikey “Jungle Juice” G to start the championship. He provided three innings of no run ball, before the ace came in to finish it off. With the perfect season fresh in their minds, 117 is soaking in the rays. The shack’s last win was in 2003, when it beat the legendary “Team Awesome” of 86 Shack. The team will commemorate the season with sweatshirts and a black tie steak dinner paid for by Pat Connolly, the bombastic manager of the Midtown All-stars.

AHOY ROCKAWAY ! WATER TEMP. 74*F- Entrance to New York Harbor (15 NM S.E. of Breezy Point). Moon: Waxing (illumination growing) Well anglers (and non-anglers), the “Dog days of summer” are here. The Romans associated the brightest star in the constellation at the time (“Sirius” the dog) with the hottest time of the year. The rest of us just think that it just means “It’s really hot outside!” Where are the all the fluke? No shortage of under sized fluke in the back bays, and finding a “keeper” (over 18.5”) for dinner is a lot of work. Many anglers have gone to the “outside” (ocean) for help in finding the flatties. A bit more action can
be found out by “Rockaway Reef” with Scup (porgies) and sea bass also being taken. It’s at this time of the season (late summer) when the back creeks and bays get more active with snappers (baby blue fish) chasing down peanut bunker and spearing. These are pretty easy to catch (ha ha) and prepare for the frying pan. Blue claw crabs are also moving up into the back creeks and bays in increasing numbers as we move on into the late summer season. There has not been too much talk of any Bass action around but, now would be a good time to drift some worms around the bridges at night around high tide. Striped bass often like to hang around
“structure” in the bay, as well as the surf zone on the beach. Scattered reports of a few blue fish being plugged up in the back bays east of the R/R bridge and over near F.B.F. Keep in mind that other larger game fish like to eat crab, peanut bunker and snappers and will NOT hesitate to move into the back creeks to find them. As we move on later into the fishing season (autumn) with cooler water temperatures, large blue fish (and some striped bass too) will move up into the back bays looking for prey (bunker, snappers, and crabs), so be on the lookout, and check to see when the water temps begin to cool down (the cooler water temperatures alert the game fish’s instinct to start eating more and to migrate south along the coast for the winter). As many local anglers can tell you, one of the great things about fishing in Rockaway is that large game fish will often show up very quickly on the surface, they’ll strike and then they’ll disappear with a giant splash. We checked in with our stations and here’s what they had to report this week. Tom’s Wave Service Station Bait & Tackle in Rockaway Park: We called and spoke with Tom and he reports that there are a lot of bait fish in the water around the shop on Beach Channel Drive Tom said
that they are the smaller bait fish spearing and other species, but not bunker (menhaden). Porgies and sea bass in the area near the sea wall are eating worms. Tom did get reports of some large porgies and sea bass on the outside being caught over at the “Rockaway Reef.” He said that there are even some big porgies and sea bass on the “inside” (bay), but that there are larger fish in more abundance out at the Rockaway Reef. Tom reports that there are more blue claw crabs around the marina areas. Big Ron’s Bait and Tackle in Howard Beach: We called Ron’s and they reported a similar situation in the bay. Lots of short fluke, some porgies and sea bass around on the inside, plenty of snappers. Some blue claw crabs are around, but they’re not filling up the traps just yet. Well there you have it anglers, call it “Dog days” or “Doldrums,” it’s just plain HOT out in August, so hot that even the fish are taking a break. ‘Til next time...
