Golden Inspiration: A Tree Shines In Rockaway By Bianca Fortis
New life and as a touch of whimsy have been brought to one Rockaway neighborhood by a local homeowner. A Beach Channel High School teacher with a background an art, Suzanne Riggs always liked to decorate the outside of her home, often using recycled materials to do so. She would also adorn her red maple tree, which grew beautifully after she planted it nearly 20 years ago when it was just the size of “a small branch.” She would wrap it in foil or other “silly” accoutrements, she said. She did it just to entertain the neighbors and local children who would pass by the home, near Cronston Avenue and Beach 142nd Street. Riggs said last year she didn’t notice how many trees throughout the peninsula had perished during the storm. “We were too busy putting our lives back together,” she said. Over the course of the last year,
however, she’d begun to notice how many of the trees were dead, including her beloved maple tree. She hoped the tree would once again thrive, but it never did. So about two weeks ago, her husband suggested that they give it a little flair and paint it gold. So Riggs did just that. Her first step was to take a saw to it and trim the branches – she gave away the extra wood pieces for kindling. Then came the gold paint. Finally, she tried to bring birds back to the tree, so she set up bird feeders. Some of the bird feed must have had corn seeds in it, because corn plants have since sprouted around the gold tree after they found their way into the soil. Many people pass by the house: some just roll by slowly while others just stop to stare. Some shake their heads and some smile, she said. “If it delights or aggravates any neighbors, so be it,” she said. “I think we have more likes than thumbs down.”

Woof! Rockaway Has NYC’s Largest Dog Park By Kathy Louis
Tucked away near the A Train tracks at Beach 82nd Street and Beach Channel Drive is a lovely oasis of fenced-in grass, paths, some benches and trees, a canopied picnic table, trash containers and a few unusual types of playground equipment. However, this NYC Parks Department area is not for children. Well… not the twolegged kind at least. Purportedly the largest of its kind in all five boroughs, this Rockaway treasure is a dog park. Accompanied by their human companions, canine critters of all shapes and sizes have the freedom to run and roam without a leash in almost 2.5 acres of fresh air. Dubbed the Freeway Dog Run about 7 years ago by a partnership between the NYC Parks Department and local non-profit group ARF-ARF (Allied Rockaway Foundation for Animal Recreation and Fitness), this grassy area was flooded by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Many large and very old trees were uprooted and destroyed as were all of the amenities. The park has since been partly restored and local dog-lovers are looking forward
to a welcome upgrade of the facilities in the near future. Last Friday, Parks Department officials met at the dog run with a representative from City Councilman Erich Ulrich’s office and ARF-ARF members to discuss the park’s renovation design. Using discretionary funding, Ulrich has put aside $300,000 to be used for improvements at the park. Plans include additional bench seating, a system of water fountains for both dogs and their humans, and lighting so the park can be used after dusk. Other items, such as dispensers for waste disposal bags, that were lost in the storm will be replaced. These renovations are scheduled for completion within the year. According to a representative of Ulrich’s office, the money is designated for fiscal year 2014. The dog run may be closed for several months while the work is being done. Susan Jasper of Rockaway Park, a former member of the ARF-ARF board, is a frequent visitor to the Freeway Dog. Accompanied by her canine “children” Lilly and Frankie, Jasper noted that additional parking for vehicles would be welcome.

Vincent and Joanie Salvatore with Murphy and Molly. At the present time, there is limited parking under the train tracks and on an adjacent street. Bentley and Shelby bring their “mother” Cassandra Williams of Rockaway Beach to the park nearly every day. Williams is looking forward to the ARF-ARF sponsored Halloween party to be held Saturday, November 1. She is already planning costumes for Bentley and Shelby. The pups enjoyed the Annual Canine Ice Cream Social that was held in August. These events are fundraisers for the volunteer group. Vincent and Joanie Salvatore of Rockaway Beach enjoy the park with their pooches Murphy and Molly. “People need to be aware of the rules,” Joanie said. “ Children or adults on bikes, skates or
Cassandra Williams and Susan Jasper with Bentley, Shelby, Lilly and Frankie. skateboards should not come to the park.” It excites the dogs and many animals like to chase those on wheels which can lead to injury of the dog or child. Rules of all NYC Parks off-leash runs for dogs are the same and most are simply common sense or courtesy. All dogs should have upto-date vaccinations and a current license. People are responsible for their pets and must pick up and dispose of any waste. If your dog digs a hole, fill it in before you leave. Calmly resolve any disagreements between animals (or owners) by leashing your pet and leaving the area. And Joanie Salvatore adds, “All dogs in the park should be spayed or neutered.” A Parks Dept. sign at the entrance advises owners, for obvious reasons, to leave female dogs in heat at home.

Brotherly Laughs Ahoy Rockaway. Ahoy, schlmoy is more like it. That’s the last time I read The Fishing Report. I see a whale on the front page of The Rockaway Times, people send pictures of all this sea life and the big fish they’ve landed. Time to get in on the action, I figure. I buy a fishing rod from Tom’s Wave station on Beach 108. Some spearing, some worms (woims as they’d say on the Little Rascals). And some beer. What else? Maybe a wheelbarrow for the haul. Well, if you think this column is occasionally funny I can tell you no one laughed harder than the fish I was trying to catch. I tossed in a line and they threw it back. I couldn’t catch a fish in my kid’s aquarium. But like the bumper stick says a bad day of fishing is better than a
good day of work – especially if you’re lucky enough to have brothers you call friends. You know the old saying, you can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends. You’re lucky if you choose your brothers and sisters to be friends as well. My brothers and I started a tradition just a couple of years ago when we decided to get together – no kids, no spouses, no nothing. Just us. It’s an experiment that worked. If you don’t have a blood feud going with your siblings, I’d recommend doing the same. Sometimes it’s just been dinner; other times we’ve gone bowling or caught a game. Sometimes we take a literal walk down memory lane . Our father worked in the boiler room at Brooklyn College. Sometimes he’d take us to the pool to swim but
not before making a stop in the boiler room which was a massive noisy place full of pipes and huge burners with flames inside that were straight out of hell. Underground tunnels, lined with pipes and valves, led from the boiler room to other parts of campus. It was a treat walking through this steamy, mysterious place. My father died decades ago but the memories of him and his work place are forever to us. Last year, at the start of one of our get-togethers we visited the Brooklyn College boiler room. Four middle aged guys just walked in and asked the guy working if we could look around. I guess we looked so old, we looked safe. He said, sure, go right ahead. The burners were new but still huge and full of fire. The tunnels were there as we remembered. Long as the eye could see, lined with pipes that seemed ready to burst with scalding steam. We were kids in a candy store. The sights, sounds, and smells took us back in time. It was the closest thing to time travel. Things often seem smaller when you revisit them but the boiler room loomed as large as ever. Just last weekend we stepped back again as we brought our fishing gear and coolers to the place we’d spent so many summer hours – under the Mill Basin Bridge. That now-decrepit span over the Belt Parkway was the canopy for years of Huck Finn, Brooklyn-style, adventures. In the good old days before video games took away childhoods, we
took our bikes and snapper poles and spent the day fishing and having fun. Sometimes when the fish weren’t biting we’d push driftwood the size of telephone poles, maybe they were telephone poles, off shore and jump onboard and sail the rafts to other side of the bay. When we got older and a little bit cooler I still went fishing under the Mill Basin but when the fish weren’t biting, Pat Mahon and I smoked our first Parliaments. I think we actually found the first pack we tried. Those were some of the memories that rushed back last weekend as we cast our lines into the water leading to the larger Jamaica Bay. At one point I felt like a star on the show Wicked Tuna as I hooked a monster. Reeling it in was a challenge but that didn’t stop me from hooting and hollering. I was into a half brag, telling my brothers they could kiss my ass, I was the King of the Catch….that is, until I realized the thing on my hook was a piece of trash, a workman’s glove, its five fingers full of salt water. The hooting and hollering was soon directed at me. We didn’t fish long. It was never about fishing, of course. We went to the Tamaqua, a bar in Gerritsen Beach where we’d really swap some fish stories. The Tamaqua was another place from another era. We figured it had been 26 or 27 years since we’d last been there. What a great day. Another one to add to the list of days we’ll always remember.

Rockaway Remembers at Tribute Park Story and photos by Bianca Fortis Seventy-six individuals from throughout the Rockaway peninsula perished during the September 11, 2001 attacks. And last Thursday, 13 years after a day that altered American history, those seventy-six names were read aloud during a memorial ceremony at Tribute Park in Rockaway. Tears were shed as family members, friends and other community members placed roses around the memorial. Last year one teacher at the Waterside School for Lead-
ership, Caroline Feeney, assigned her students to visit Tribute Park and write or draw about their experiences. Three children, Kyra Welch, Latavia Cave and Aubrey Clavins read their poems during the ceremony. “I wish I may, I wish I might,” read Cave, “have this wish I wish tonight: a safer world for us to grow up in, a world free from violence and corruption.” For more information about Tribute Park, or to read more of the students’ reflections about the space, visit http://rockawaytributepark.org/ watersideschool.

The Rockaway Times
A bunch of kids were running around The Rockaway Times Booth the other day and they poked their heads in to say hello. One of the kids was 7 year old Joe Butler who just happened to be the young lad in that great cover we ran a couple weeks back, A Boy And His Whale. We got Joe to autograph a copy so we can hang it on the wall. All he got was a lousy t-shirt. *** HSBC, the bank that once operated at the foot of Beach 116th, is still the tenant for that abandoned property. We contacted them about the shoddy look of the place and they quickly sent out workers to pull weeds and clean up a bit. The real problem is the landlord. Wharton Properties run by Jeff Sutton, doesn’t have much motivation to do anything with the property while HSBC keeps paying the rent. *** Sometimes we forget what’s right next door. Fort Tilden is home to the Rockaway Theater Company (go see Godspell!) and the Rockaway Artists Alliance. The RAA is now hosting Art-
Page 7

Splash 2014, their14th annual multimedia arts event. ArtSplash 2014 is RAA’s largest exhibition of the year. It features a variety of work from artists from the metropolitan area and beyond. And another exhibit is on the way. InkSplash 2014 is a juried exhibition of original print work. The RAA is seeking submissions by October 10. Go to rockawayartistsalliance.org for more information. *** Speaking of art, thanks to a suggestion from an online reader, Drita Harris, who lived in Rockaway but is now in Texas, we’re going to feature an art piece a week. A painting by Kevin Callaghan, depicting a Beach 116th beach scene, is in this week’s Rockaway Times. Good idea, Drita! We’re lucky in Rockaway: there’s lots of art to showcase. *** Well, it might amount to nothing – as it often does – but we hear there was a pow-wow at City Hall to figure out what to do about Rockaway. We don’t have any more info than that but
it suggests they’re hearing some noise from this direction. *** The secret business not listed in last week’s Word Search was DALTONS. Joan Coogan was first to email the correct answer. (One wisecrack we enjoyed came from a reader who said Jon Gaska of Community Board 14 was the missing business). In the long history of The Rockaway Times, few items have gotten the attention of readers like the Rockaway Word Search. Others who found the missing word were: Kathy Hughes, Karen Betts, Mike O’Neill, Barbara Berger, Rose Klein, Neil McNelis, Sally McVeigh, Kirsten Romas, Kathleen Morris, Sue Sullivan, Millie McGrory, Paulette Casey, Sarah Gravinese, Virginia Newman and Kristine Supple. All these folks were eligible to win a $25 gift certificate from Dalton’s. We put the names in a bowl and picked a name randomly and the winner is…. Sue Sullivan. *** FEMA is reviewing thousands of payments it made to homeowners and in some cases is demanding its money back. According to reports, second homeowners got payments they were not eligible for. In other cases, more than one household member was offered aid. Will the City do the same when they audit Rapid Repairs and Build It Back? *** It was like a gold rush or Black Fri-
day stampede as Mallomars were offered at a deep discount at local supermarkets last week. The creamfilled cookies (which we say look better than they taste!) proved irresistible to many. Some shoppers filled their carts as if preparing for Doom’s Day. We expect local gyms to have a boost in enrollment in about two weeks. *** Osprey’s Journey is a two-year research project tracking the migrations of two adult male Ospreys from their nesting sites at Jamaica Bay to their winter grounds in the Caribbean or South America. The birds, named Coley and C2, are tracked by GPS and travel as much as 2700 miles when they head south. Some great photos and more info is available online at jamaicabayosprey.org *** The Rockaway Youth Task Force wants the Q52 bus to run into Far Rockaway and they’ll rally for the cause. They’re asking for others to join them this Saturday, September 20th at Beach 67th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard at 11 a.m. *** Rumor time. The Sandbar and the adjoining stores on the boardwalk and 116th Street remains an unholy mess. But a little birdy dropped an interesting name on us, saying the guy was looking to bring the Sand Bar back. The guy with his eye on the place used to own a bar restaurant. ***

Goodbye sand Dear Editor: It’s said that one sign of insanity is using the same method and trying to get a different result. If anyone hasn’t noticed, the newly pumped sand is disappearing already. There’s about a 3 foot “cliff” caused by erosion at the surfing beach, and some of the jetties around 108th St. which were buried by the pumping are starting to stick up through the shoreline. In my nearly 60 years here, I’ve watched them dredge perhaps 8 or 10 times. It’s called “Half A Job”: there’s nothing to keep the sand in place: no jetties, groins or other permanent fixtures. But de Blasio wants to spend $10 billion for the massive “Big ‘U’” project to protect lower Manhattan. The message is that the outer boroughs are expendable. If Rockaway residents didn’t take the storm threat seriously before, they darnn well better now. And that starts with getting the politicos to make an honest effort to protect our lives and property.
Arthur Cholakis
Cori right on dunes Dear Editor: The point is that true dunes, are not just sand berms. The point is dunes alone are not sufficient protection. The point is that the plan of Walter Meyer, should have been part of the 2013 PlanNYC SIRR report. The point is a five foot hill of sand that the City of New York calls a “dune”, is not truly a dune. The point is, the ACOE needs to ramp up plans and implementation of real protection, including stone groins. John Cori is correct, protection of the peninsula, to say
the least was never a priority, is obviously well past due. Sand was and is totally needed for protection, but certainly not sufficient for long term protection. John Cori is correct again, keep your fingers crossed, destruction, just a storm away!
Christine
Keep At It Cori Dear Editor: (Regarding John Cori) John you are doing great as one of Rockaways activists and it’s nice to see new faces pushing to get Rockaway on the map! Please ignore the old Rockaway folks who want the status quo and do NOTHING for Rockaway. They just have comments to make against the activists and volunteers who take their personal time to better their community. I have noticed angry jealous people making comments on numerous occasions. They combined with others will be the reasons why rockaway is not left on the backburner. So to all you know nothings and do nothings, why don’t you keep your ignorant comments to yourself or maybe take that effort and do something for the community you live in.
The Rockaway Times
Dear Editor: The boardwalk is supposed to cost somewhere around $270 million dollars. How is that so few workers are doing the job on a $270 million dollar project? I pass by Shore Front Parkway all the time and see very few workers actually working. I read that piles have been driven and that progress is being made. Progress on who’s watch? While the Community Board wor-
ries and gripes about tanning beds and other silly things why doesn’t somebody ask the Parks Department where are the damn workers to finish the damn job! Don’t tell me the boardwalk can’t be finished a lot sooner. The project is more than a quarter of a billion dollars! And we get a dozen people working some of the time? I see machinery sitting idly. I see a beach that is missing its spine. I don’t see anybody with a sense of urgency. Can someone ask Parks, why aren’t there hundreds of people hurrying to get the job done?! Forget the tanning tables! You can’t see the forest for the trees! Focus on getting the boardwalk finished. Is the fix in? Does Skansa get more money if they take their sweet time? All the yapping just gives Parks another excuse. Demand they get the job done now!

Death By Study; Consultants Party On
Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com
Seriously, you’d think Chuck Schumer and his staff would know better. He and his office made a big deal announcing that 1.4 million of NY Rising (Sandy) money was going to fund a transportation study in Rockaway. Another study! To tell us we what we already know. More than a million dollars to find out transportation stinks? Unbelievable. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We need the study to be eligible for Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) money. But there’s no guarantee that Rockaway will ever see such money. This TIGER money is sought by communities in every state. The only guarantee here is that the consultants will rake in even more money. It’s pretty easy money. All the consultants have to do is take the A train, drive on our crumbling roads and pay a toll on the way home. Or they can read other studies by the DOT, the MTA, Queens College, and City Planning. We hope consultants thank their lucky stars for Sandy. One set of consultants oversaw the efforts by locals to determine how millions of New York Rising Money could be spent in Rockaway. The locals, who spent countless hours working at this, identified ferry operations as a crucial need. They suggested $7 million
which more than covers a year of ferry service. So there it is, the City doesn’t have to spend a dime for the ferry to run another year. But – there shouldn’t be a but – but there is. The Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR) will determine which projects and actions are best positioned for implementation. Maybe the consultants could consult Governor Cuomo (who hired the consultants). According to the Governor’s Office, criteria included “the effectiveness of each project in reducing risk to populations and critical assets, feasibility, community support” and “have a tie to the natural disaster to which the funding is linked.” If funding the ferry didn’t qualify, the consultants should have told the committees to forget it, to choose something else. If funding doesn’t qualify, doesn’t meet CDBG guidelines, the consultants would be guilty of gross incompetence and should be forced to refund whatever they were paid. If funding the ferry meets the requirements, the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery should release the $7 million immediately and give the ferry another year. Let’s just hope the $7 million doesn’t go to another study. Although the consultants wouldn’t mind.

So I was sitting at the kitchen table last Thursday reading my copy of the Rockaway Times when what to my wandering eyes did appear? Well, I’ll tell you what didn’t appear - our weekly Between the Bridges in Broad Channel column! I carefully re-read the paper several times to no avail. The column was gone, vanished, missing. awol, astray, playing hooky, a no show! I quickly contacted the paper’s Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Kevin Boyle, at his magnificent corporate offices on Beach Channel Drive (you know - the taxi stand with the bicycle on the roof), to ascertain what had become of the wayward column. Turns out the column’s absence was nothing more than a simple oversight with the column not being included in the computerized desktop publisher edition prior to being sent to the printer. Mystery solved! An honest

and very understandable mistake. After all Mr. Boyle, having an “ET” moment, was preoccupied with placing a bicycle on the top of his taxi stand. Of course, the accidental absence of the column in last week’s edition then led me to worry - “What if nobody notices the column is missing?” Thankfully, I didn’t have to worry for too long. By Sunday afternoon I had received hundreds of emails.... okay, maybe not hundreds but I did get quite a few. Okay, okay, truth be told I received a total of four very short and to the point emails about the missing column. They were as follows... *“Finally, a column I understood!” *“Fall off one of your bridges?” *“Great read, short, concise, to the point!” *“What happened? Did Boyle wise up and replace you with Facts You Probably Don’t Need?” I admit the underwhelming response to the missing column didn’t leave me feeling like Sally Fields during her emotional 1985 Oscar acceptance speech moment when she tearfully stated to the audience, “You like, you really like me”, but I’ll take what I can get wherever and whenever I can get it. For those of you who might be interested, last week’s column, the one you couldn’t read in the paper because someone was busy placing a bicycle on his roof, was dedicated to Broad Channel’s own Kevin Conklin who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and left for recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina this past Sunday. His going away party at Broad Channel’s VFW Post was a great affair, crowded with family, friends and neighbors. Prior to departing Broad Channel for Parris Island, Kevin delivered thank you notes to the homes of all those who attended his party. What a class act! His parents Bill and Vickie Bowden and the entire community of Broad Channel can be rightfully proud of this Continued on page 19

Biking Across America Not So Easy Rider By Shane Shackleford Day 14 ended in Forest City, NC after what felt like an easy 86 mile day. Caleb and I sat at the Chili’s restaurant across the highway from our hotel and recapped the “uneventful” day. 1) I almost got backed over by a garbage truck on Peter’s street in Charlotte. 2) We were pulled over by a cop. 3) I got a flat tire. 4) We dipped into South Carolina real quick. 4) We rode up a mountain to Kings Mountain, NC. 5) We rode 46 miles in 4 hours. 6) We ate at our first Waffle House. 7) I got my second flat. 8) Dave got attacked by fire ants. 9) We found a Jurassic Park Jeep. 10) We met an old man who got us up to speed on the latest Miley Cyrus news and
all the Ford Galaxies he has owned. 11) We had frozen yogurt in Shelby. 12) We rode the last 7 miles in the rain to our hotel. 13) Unlimited fajitas for 12.99! Today should be an easy 60 mile ride to
Asheville but, then again, that’s what we always start out thinking. Somehow it ends up being 10 hours on the bike and 70-80 miles no matter what. Next stop Tennessee. Regards Rockaway! -Shane Shack

•••• Why our parish is unique •••• A Brief Message from the Parish Council –
St. Francis de Sales is truly a special place that is filled with so many warm, passionate, & sincere people that make the entire community truly unique. For years on end , St. Francis de Sales Parish has represented the Epi-Center from Breezy Point & Roxbury , touching Broad Channel & Far Rockaway, and of course Neponsit, Belle Harbor, & Rockaway Park .
Today, whether you can attend the dance or not, we would like everyone to reflect deeply on what the St. Francis de Sales Parish means to the future of the entire peninsula . It is critical that we instill into our youth the importance of the Mass & the continued strength of the entire St. Francis de Sales Community which consists of the Church & School . It is essential to put our Parish as a priority in our lives so the future will be as great as the past & many will be able to bare the fruits of our devotion to St. Francis de Sales Parish . The CORE . The HEART BEAT . The reason we as a community have all come together for years on end. Today, we are reaching out to the entire St. Francis Community to stay unified and help maintain & grow our special place we call home !!!!!!!!!!!!! Without it, we are lost !!!!!!!
00175RT
It must be recognized that so many worthy organizations were created by many of the St. Francis Faithful . In particular, The Graybeards, The Wish Foundation, The RIBS, The Jeddies, & The Wounded Warrior Leaders . WOW ! Truly incredible parishioners have devoted their time & efforts for so many great causes which is beyond commendable and noble .

Godspell Rocks the Rockaway Theatre Company Godspell, an amazing, exuberant and revolutionary retelling of the gospel according to St. Matthew in song and dance, burst onto the stage of the Post Theater at Fort Tilden this past Friday night and enveloped the entire audience in a completely unique theatrical experience the likes of which few theater goers have ever experienced. There will be six more performances of Godspell. The dates are September 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. and September 21st and 28th at 2:00 p.m. The September 26, show is a special benefit performance. Unique Campsite Floats Toward the Fall
By Bianca Fortis Who says there’s no place to stay in Rockaway? The summer may be coming to a close, but business is still holding up for Truck-A-Float, a unique camping facility located on the waters of Jamaica Bay at the Beach 59th Street marina. Maribel Araujo, of the restaurant Caracas, came up with the idea for Truck-A-Float together with Andrew Field of Rockaway Taco; they saw it come to fruition with the help of Mateo Pinto and Carolina Cisneros, who are behind Combo Colab, a design firm. Araujo said the Truck-A-Float season will end once guests stop inquiring about staying. So far most of September and half of October are booked, she said. “They are designed for spring and summer, but at the end of the day, if
sils and supplies for making a cup of coffee. The pods also come with instructions so they can be used correctly. The pods share hammocks and chairs, allowing guests at different pods a unique social experience. Fully-equipped bathrooms are located at the marina. The pods are not insulated, but the walls do provide a protective layer – the pods actually survived Hurricane Sandy, Araujo said – and a guest wearing layers would be safe overnight. Araujo said the pods are simple
and efficient, but also beautifully designed and built. “Overall people love them and always want to come back,” she said. “They are like relaxation chambers, to tell you the truth.” She said a benefit of using Truck-a-Float over traditional housing, such as a hotel or even an Airbnb apartment, is that it offers a unique experience at an affordable price. “Come on – waking up and going to bed on a floating cabin on Jamaica Bay?” she said. “What else can you ask for?”
you like to camp in the fall, you will be extremely happy staying at Truck-A-Float,” she said. She said many guests during the season started by booking just one night, and then returned for several more nights later on. Located at Marina 59, the flotilla of four pods – named Barnacle, Diamondback, Swan and Horseshoe – float on the water, leaving guests with easy access to activities in and around the bay. Araujo and Field live in one pod during the season and rent the rest. They are hoping to build more for next year, Araujo said. The pods are made of wood and white roofing panels with a reused truck cap attached to the top, used to provide shade and shelter – as well as giving the innovative concept its name. The pods each contain a full size cot, storage areas and a compact CEO Richard Brown, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder joined volunteers and folding table that contains uten- participants last Sunday at the Health Fair hosted by St. John’s Hospital.

young man. Although the column never made it into the paper, you can view it on the Rockaway Times online edition at rockawaytimes. com unless someone is now busy placing a large station clock on his roof next to the bicycle! Next month will see the 1st anniversary of the passing of Broad Channel’s unofficial Mayor, good friend and neighbor, Al McCarthy. Al had been instrumental in the decades long struggle to have the city address the issue of tidal street flooding in Broad Channel. As work started in earnest this week on the construction of a new bulkhead at the end of West 12th Road I couldn’t help but think that somewhere in Heaven Al is grabbing St, Peter by the arm while pointing down to-
wards our little town in the bay and stating “About damned time!” The recent tidal street flooding which accompanied the September 9th full moon can best be described as off the hook! During the 9 calendar day period of September 5th through the 13th, areas of Broad Channel sustained 14 instances of tidal flooding with high tides, some of which were 8 feet in height! On a happier note, the 2014 Hurricane season continues to be kind to our area here on the coast with Hurricane Edouardo, the 4th named storm of season, tracking far off the coast, out to sea. ADDABBO TO HOST ANNUAL JOB FAIR According to State Senator Joe Addabbo more than 60 businesses are confirmed to participate as vendors in a Job Fair scheduled for Friday, September 19 from 10-3 p.m. “As my constituents in these neighborhoods push on just to get their homes repaired, I believe it is my duty to lessen any burden I can. That is why I want to bring the job opportunities to the people, by way of my Annual Job Fair,” Addabbo said. the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center, FDNY Recruiting, New York State Police, NYPD Recruiting, New York Life Insurance, Primerica Financial Services New York, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and Sunnyside Citywide Home Care. The Job Fair will be held at the new YMCA in Arverne by the Sea, 207 Beach 73rd Street, which location in itself is an example of job creation and opportunity, said the Senator. Historical Walk Ahead For the first time, The Municipal Art Society of New York has added a tour of the Rockaway Peninsula to its roster for October 2014. “Revisiting Rockaway Beach,” a walking tour guided by Vivian Rattay Carter, author of Images of America: Rockaway Beach, will take place on October 11, 2014, from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m., rain or shine. Tour guides for the Municipal Art Society of New York City, distinguished experts in art, architecture, history, geography and the street life of New York, have been leading tours of the city since 1956. Their efforts support the organization’s mission — to preserve the character of neighborhoods and
landmarks, and plan for a more resilient and livable city. Carter will lead the tour group on an exploration of the heart of the historic village of Rockaway Beach, providing an overview of how the area was formed by nature, then settled by entrepreneurial pioneers, ultimately becoming a vibrant and self-sufficient resort community. The tour group will pass remnants of historic hotspots along the way and talk about the future of the neighborhood. Tickets can be purchased at www.mas. org Photo courtesy Vivian Carter

Erosion Equation While I’m flattered that some other local papers have used my info on how the Rockaway peninsula has grown over the last 100 years, I’m struggling to understand why there is no plan to fortify what currently exists. Rockaway people are one of the most resilient people I have ever met in my lifetime. I’m proud to say I experienced the tragedy of Hurricane Sandy with some of you and also to witness and hear stories how the rest of the peninsula pushed through the pain to rebuild and recover. What scares me though is witnessing right before our eyes, the same erosion process that gave us a beach of mere feet at high tide
around the streets in the 90’s before the last two hurricanes that hit us. The process of escarpment at the last main jetty is well under way and 10-20 feet of beach already lost from when sand was placed, only months ago. John Cori got fantastic media attention with the “Demand the Sand” campaign and he ultimately won. Now we have sand at historic levels and it’s literally criminal to watch it eroding at a rapid pace. Even the lifeguards were making bets with each other in what week of what month will the water be lapping at their stands. Some were surprised that it happened sooner than they thought. We’ve had some decent hurri-
The Rockaway Times
Rumblings on the street is that there will be an annual Rockaway Beach Longboard Contest. This would be great as there are probably more longboarders in Rockaway compared to anywhere else on the island, except for Ditch Plains in Montauk. Expect to read more about this here at Tubular Views. cane swells hit us recently, including in the last 2 days with swell action from Hurricane Edouard. With ground swells that travel from hundreds or thousands of miles away, while powerful, they generally don’t cause the erosion like the Nor’easters we experience. With a winter of many NE’ers looming in the future, this erosion process will only get amplified. While the Army Corp Of Engineers have their knowledge base of erosion numbers in feet per year, nature has a very cunning way of proving us, and them, wrong. Via the grapevine, I have heard that the ACOE are working with an international crew of stellar engi-
neers, some of them specifically focused on our trouble spots here in Rockaway. I hope they report on some new projects to fortify our beaches and sand, but we all know what snail pace these crawl at. We really can’t sit idle. If we the people of the Rockaways don’t start some ground swell of action to fortify our peninsula with jetties/groins or artificial reefs, I’m afraid we will be in a similar state of potential peril that we experienced two years ago. And I’d hate to see the wonderful people that live here go through that trauma again, especially if it can be prevented.

Collard Greens with Smoked Turkey By Selma Erey Ingredients 3 drumsticks smoked turkey 3 bunches collard greens 1⁄2 cup red onion 3 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon corn or olive oil 10 cups water to taste Cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning 1⁄2 cup salt 1 tablespoon vinegar Ahead of Time—Cook the smoked turkey 1. Rinse smoked turkey drumsticks. 2. Heat oil in a pot. Chop onion and add to pot, stir until golden. 3. Add poultry seasoning and stir. 4. Add drumsticks, crushed garlic, pepper, and water. 5. Cover pot and simmer for 45 minutes. 6. Remove drumsticks and put on a plate to cool. 7. Cut out and discard drumstick and other bones, and thick skin (or freeze bones for a future broth). 8. Cut turkey meat into bite size pieces and store in refrigerator. 9. When cooled, store turkey broth in refrigerator. Ahead of Time—Prep your collard
greens 1. Do not wash. Just cut out large veins of collard green leaves (to remove bitterness). 2. Wrap deveined collards first in a damp paper towel, then a plastic bag. Close tight and store in refrigerator (to preserve freshness). Close to dinnertime 1. Heat the turkey broth to a simmer. 2. Rub collards with a lot of salt as you wash them in running water (to remove the grit). 3. Add collards to pot. Stir as you cook, for 15 minutes (or until the smell is no longer strong). 4. Add turkey and simmer for another 5 minutes. Sprinkle the vinegar over the greens. Serve with brown rice and pinto beans. To add color, garnish with grilled tomatoes and peppers.

September is always a fresh start for most people in the way they decide to eat, exercise and work. Summer has passed and if you live near the beach there were plenty of social gatherings with great food and spirits. So now is the time to join the gym or start back up in some form of exercise program. Once you begin to work out again, you become more conscious of what you put into your body. You can exercise all day but if you don’t eat the right foods you will not have the optimal results. Processed foods and sugar are two negatives. Begin to read the labels when you shop and you will realize most foods in the supermarket are processed. Natural, healthy foods are not only difficult to find in the local supermarket but they are often more expensive. Brown rice, gluten free products, organic vegetables, etc. are all more money than the foods that have less nutritional value. You have to educate yourself on why organic, gluten free, non-processed food might be the best for your health in the long run. I know there are many people who shop outside Rockaway at Trader
Joes, Whole Foods or a natural health food store but not enough of us take the time and energy to do this. In my opinion you have to make the commitment for yourself and your family to bring healthier foods into your household even if it means being more expensive. Maybe we could eat less, two-thirds of what you normally eat is sufficient. I was taught as a child to eat everything off my plate, regardless of how full my belly was, it was sinful to waste. So yes, just slap that food on my thighs because that is where it was going since there was no room in my belly. Seriously, we eat more than we need. Snacks should be limited in your home or at least have healthy vegetables or fruit to nibble on. It is easier for my family to eat healthier in September with only three of us home. The two older boys are off to college and they could eat us into the poor house. Yes, I am guilty of feeding them processed food due to their enormous appetites, but, they are aware of my thinking on this and maybe by next year they too will become educated on how to eat healthy. Start off the school year on the right track. Find an exercise that you love to do and then be aware of what goes into your system. For me yoga works miracles, I am clearly aware of what I am putting in my body and I then find not only does my body feel better, my mind is crystal clear. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you slip, in fact know you are completely normal when you cheat. Start everyday fresh with no judgment just positive affirmations. Baby steps are better than no steps at all.

Play Ball! Snowflake League Is On By Richard George
The Jamaica Bay Babe Ruth Snowflake League is back and better than ever. League Co-Commissioners Rich George and Dennis Cook held their annual captains meeting at The Wharf in late August and implemented some new rule changes that are sure to improve the competitive nature of the league. This is the first year that only 6 of the 8 teams will make the playoffs with the top two seeds getting first round byes and the bottom two teams getting an early start on Christmas shopping. This rule change will have the top teams fighting for first round byes and bottom teams fighting to be involved in playoff glory. Also the “Dennis Cook and Company Rule” was put into effect meaning that not every player on a team can have a pinch runner. Only two guys per team can be run for. All captains shook hands and agreed on the new rule changes and the season was underway. The season began on September 8th and all 8 teams were able to get their double-headers in because of the kindness of Mother Nature. Fingers crossed that this continues. As far as the games go, this is a little recap of Week 1 for the Snowflake League. The Black Sox manhandled Old Head to kick off the Snowflake League season on Opening Night. One by mercy and the other just as convincing. The following night saw the Co-
Commissioners respective squads Rock Fam and the Crushas go to battle. Banana Split!!! The Crushas crushed Rock Fam by way of mercy in Game 1 with Rock Fam bouncing back to right the ship to take Game 2. The next night saw another split as Marine Park “mercy-ruled” the Degenerates in Game 1 with the Degenerates bouncing back to take Game 2 and earn the split. And to cap off a great first week of Snowflake League softball, the Ruffle Bar busted out their bats and brooms to sweep the G-Squad. The Commissioner’s Office speaks on behalf of the entire league as we continue to be in deep gratitude to the BCAC for letting us use their field, to be “under the lights” for another great season of Jamaica Bay Babe Ruth Snowflake League softball. The league also thanks the umpires for continuing to put up with our many shenanigans. - Commissioner’s Office of the Jamaica Bay Babe Ruth Snowflake League Standings after Week 1(run differential separates the seeds): 1: Black Sox (2-0) 2: Ruffle Bar (2-0) 3: Crushas (1-1) 4: Marine Park (1-1) 5: Degenerates (1-1) 6: Rock Fam (1-1) 7: G-Squad (0-2) 8: Old Head (0-2)

Build And Plan The Right Way “The Peoples Climate March” is scheduled for Saturday September 21st. Organizers are anticipating seeing crowds of upwards of five hundred thousand people marching and lining the streets of NYC. It will be massive rally to request that the leaders of the world take decisive action on what was once called Global warming, then called climate change now called “the climate crisis.” This march will coincide with The United Nations Climate meeting. Although the protesters believe the goal is to push for such things as “environmental justice,” “migrant justice,” ”anti fracking” and other things such as “saving the Arctic,” it seems to me that the
organizers are putting their eggs in one basket. The organizers are definitely of the mindset that the rise and fall of the earth’s temperature hinge solely on the actions of mankind. While this may or not be true, there is plenty of debate and evidence from both those who believe mankind is solely causing the earth’s temperature to rise and those who believe it is a natural occurrence. Whenever I find myself discussing the topic of climate change, I always inject the same question. I ask, if The United States Government were to give you a grant of $50,000 to do ONE of two things, either raise your home or install solar panels. Which would you do?
It always makes people think for a second. Do we err on the side of caution and prepare for the worst starting now and prepare? Or do we try to reverse the presumed manmade rise in global temperatures? I’m not saying who is right and who is wrong. What I’m saying is to start today for rising temperatures and higher sea levels and tides. Just as we are doing for our boardwalk. It is being built several feet higher to prepare for the worst case scenario to be ready for the next big storm and rising seas! During Mayor Bloomberg’s first year as Mayor he spoke of installing a storm surge barrier around lower Manhattan along the Battery. If he would have followed through on that idea he would have saved the City, State and Federal governments billions of dollars of the damage caused by Super storm Sandy. Unfortunately his critics said his idea would cost too much money. We all know how that turned out! All I know is, I will feel a hell of a lot more comfortable in next 30-40 years having a huge sea wall around our peninsula than having a solar panel on every roof! Let’s not wait. Hard structures NOW! I look forward to seeing the Army Corps plan.

Aqueduct Considered for Soccer Stadium Developers are considering building the city’s first Major League Soccer arena on land near the Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, according to reports. Both Flushing Meadows Corona Park and a site near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx were previously considered for the stadium, but plans fell through for both. Starting the new team, to be called the New York City Football Club, is a joint partnership between Sheik Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the owner of the Manchester City Football Club, and the Yankees. “A soccer stadium would create jobs, stimulate economic development and make Queens the city’s premier sports destination,” Councilman Eric Ulrich said. “In the days and weeks ahead, I will be working closely with the community and my fellow elected officials to see if the proposed site in my district is the right fit before making a final decision.” Ferry advocate Joe Hartigan warns that traffic on game days might be horrific. Still, he said a stadium might be an additional incentive for the City to launch ferry service to Kennedy airport (with a Rockaway tie-in).

Grinder Girl Now Does Swimwear Design By Bianca Fortis Her skills include fire eating, snake charming and walking on glass. But local vaudeville performer Kiva Kahl, perhaps best known as “Grinder Girl,” has another talent: designing swimwear. As Grinder Girl, Kahl performed regularly on the David Letterman Show and made appearances elsewhere: her performances involved using a saw against her metal corset to create sparks and dance. Her passion for performing actually began with a love of design: she created elaborate costumes made of unusual materials and decided to start wearing them. She actually designed her first swimsuit at the age of 10 by cutting up her mother’s red spandex dress. “I was born sewing, designing and making stuff,” she said. She got her start at the Coney Island Circus Sideshow. “It’s not how i make a living anymore,” she said. “I now dress performers instead.” A few years ago she turned her attention to swimwear: she explained that, at the time, she had been learning to surf in Rockaway. When the opportunity arose for her to take her first wave, she was left trying to ride the wave while also trying to hold on to her bathing suit. So she set out to design a swimsuit that would hold up to the rough-and-tumble nature of surfing, but also looked good. For example, her line features rash guards, which prevent the bathing suit from riding up.
“Some swimsuits [on the market] stay on, but are not sexy,” Kahl said. “Everyone can go get a Speedo.” For each season she picks out five different prints; the swimsuits are reversible and each has a solid color on the other side. She tested the first swimsuit on herself. Then she handed them out to women surfers in Costa Rica. A year later she checked in to see how the swimsuits had held up against the sun, sand, salt water and sunscreen. And thus the swimwear line was born. For five years it was her full-time job. But recently she started a new job so she has cut work on the line back to no more than 20 hours a week, she said. She sells the swimsuits as separates; each one goes for $50 to $75 apiece. While she has sold the swimsuits on the e-commerce website Etsy.com, she prefers to sell in stores so that customers can try on the suits. She only sells in shops with whom she has a personal relationship, she said. She sends the fabric to be cut by a computer, but otherwise the suits are made entirely by her hands. She also provides the opportunity to order the suits to be custom made. “Everything is done by me,” she said. “The quality control is the best you can have.”

The End Is Here We are screwed! Whenever I decide on a column I think of my opening line, and let it flow. The above opener is the only line needed regarding the following column. We are in the midst of an international crises, not of war or civil unrest, nor or Mother Nature. This one is handcrafted, delivered to your doorstep. It has spread faster than the Bubonic Plague swept in the Middle Ages, and with no known antidote we are certain to meet an untimely Black Death, at least in terms of social interaction. The outbreak, Smartis Phoneitus can only hope to be contained. But I for one, am suffering from a serious case of iPhoneobia. With the latest release on September 19th of the iPhone 6 & 6 Plus, the 5th Avenue Apple store has seen productive members of society camping out for 3 weeks in anticipation. Is this real life? Currently, I’m working near a high school. At dismissal, hundreds maybe even thousands of teens descend onto the streets of Brooklyn. The rush to get out of class is only rivaled by the immediate need to be updated by all things social media. The conversations I have overheard make me scratch my head. “Did you see what Ernesto ‘tweeted’. “Nah yo, is it on Facebook”? “Nah it’s on Instagram though.” “Ight, I gotta like it then.” When I was coming up, we concerned ourselves with getting a screen name to
drop AOL game on our latest crush. Despite using technology, it still left mystery on who the person actually was and made the game of solving the mystery all the more challenging. If you were lucky, you got the house number and awkwardly asked said crush’s father for permission to talk to his daughter. Her dad knows, we are definitely screwed! Nothing irks me more than going to a concert and watching a sea of white screens throughout the stadium. At Tom Petty at the Garden last week it reminded me that though we live on Planet Earth, we have indeed become alien robots from outer space. Live in the moment folks, enjoy the show and for God’s sake put your damn phone away. Gavin Degraw said it best, “I’m looking at the crowd, and they’re staring at their phones.” Tom and Gavin knows, we are screwed! Over the next few decades I fear the absolute breakdown of social interaction. I told someone that my kids will not have a phone until they are ready to pay for it just like my parents did with me. He said I got my daughter one so I know where she is. I was home at sundown and didn’t need to be found with an iPhone tracker. If I wasn’t home for dinner, I didn’t eat. If I needed to call home I used a quarter. It worked just fine for all of us. We are at war with ourselves people, and I am at war right now as I complete this article in the notes section of my iPhone 5. I’m so Screwed!

SPORTS Running News Regardless of how cold or how hot, just as Labor Day marks the end of the beach season for most, it also denotes the transition from RBVL volleyball and Summer Classic basketball to football, soccer, and cross country. The collegiate cross country ranks are once again swelled with a strong contingent of local runners. Connor Gallagher has come out of the gates blazing with two impressive performances for the Molloy College Lions. At the season opening St. John’s/Hofstra Invitational, Gallagher broke the 16 minute barrier with a 15:57 for 5K to place third. The Belle Harbor junior then followed with an equally impressive 25:31 at the 8K LIU Post Invitational to place 4th and first among Division II. Younger brother Liam made his debut with a 17:32 at St. John’s/ Hofstra and 27:25 at LIU Post. Patrick Goldberg picked up where he left off at Mount St. Vincent. The 2013 Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year and 2014 Graybeards Family Fun champion opened the 2014 season at West Point with a 17:22 5k to place 28th, first non-Division I. A fifth place finish in 28.57 at Van Cortlandt Park followed, and then a 27.18 at LIU Post to break his own CMSV school record by over a minute. Brother James Goldberg has gotten off to a solid start as CMSV’s # 2 runner with times of 20:30, 32:50, and a personal best 30:18 at LIU Post. AHOY ROCKAWAY ! This weekend got off to a poor weather start with a rainy Saturday. Have you noticed that we can only get one good day out of just about every weekend this summer? If you’ve been lucky enough to be off during the week it’s been fantastic weather; if you’re a weekend warrior you’re running at 50 percent. The cooler drier weather has arrived making it feel more like autumn as overnight low temperatures dip into the lower 50’s. Sunday’s weather made up for Saturday’s poor showing and it was great day with cool air and strong sunshine. Sweatshirts were needed early in the morning on Sunday as an 8 mph N.E. off shore breeze kept things cool. In the afternoon the wind had shifted around to the S. at 6 mph making for a pleasant day. With the passing of Labor Day, most of the beaches are now available to the surf casters all day. We caught up with “Jimmy the Fisherman” while he was surf fishing at Beach 111th Street on Sunday. Jim told us that he was casting clam bellies into the surf to hopefully get at some striped bass or blue fish. Jamaica Bay: We stopped by Big Ron’s bait and tackle on Cross bay Blvd in Howard Beach. Ron did inform us that he had heard of two striped bass being taken but, the anglers were being tight lipped about its exact location. Fluke fishing is still hanging on unbelievably, tons of shorts but, there are still some larger fish lurking in with them for dinner. Porgies have
has posted times of 21.11 at Lehigh and 22:06 at Vassar in early season 6K’s. Up top in Division I, Devin Rocks took the day off at LIU Post for Fordham after a strong 28:02, 22nd place finish in the Fordham Fiasco at Van Cortlandt. Kathleen Woods posted 21:21 for Fairfield at the Fordham meet and 16:49 for 4K at the season opener at Stony Brook. Graybeards female champion Caile Kohlbrenner returns for defending NCAA champion Providence College and began the season with 5K times of 18:49 and University of New Hampshire and 20:03 at Stony Brook’s Wolfie Invitational. Meets continue throughout the fall with conference championships in early November followed by NCAA regionals on November 15 and National Championships on November 22. The high school season gets underway this weekend and among those out on the trails will be Alex Goldberg, Christian Lanzetta, Mary Ellen Woods, Kayla Rayder, and Carolyn Crocker for Archbishop Molloy, Jackie,Tess and Colleen Gallagher as well as Kailey O’Grady for Bishop Kearney, Brendan Gallagher for Cathedral, and Frank McVeigh, Peter Tuffey and James Lunny for Xavier. James McManus will lead Scholars’ Seawolves into their second season of PSAL competition. The high school season culminates with CHSAA and PSAL championships in early November and State championships on November 15.
Good Combo: Bands and Volley Ball been showing up in abundance now hitting on clams and worms. Dawn from Big Ron’s also provided us with a blue fish picture. The blue fish were caught off of Breezy Point by Mike, Dominick, Randy, D, and Nick. Tom’s Wave service station/ bait and tackle on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park: Tom tells us that the fluke are still on the bite, shorts are the norm and the fluke are running late for this time of year. Snappers are also in abundance. Tom tells us that the his customer like the strong porgy action around the bridges. Tom mentioned that the Marine Parkway Bridge has been the more productive for porgies than the other bridges have been. That’s it anglers, til next time...

After a push from Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and Councilman Eric Ulrich, community leaders and local residents, the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) have agreed to repave side streets initially left out of the Broad Channel Street Resurfacing Project. The additional work is scheduled to begin immediately. “This is a huge win for our families in Broad Channel,” Goldfeder said. “I commend the Department of Transportation and Department of Design and Construction for listening to our community’s concerns and ensuring our families make a complete recovery after the storm. I want to also give a special thank you to Dan Mundy and the Broad Channel Civic Association for their hard work and constant advocacy.” “By investing in our infrastructure, DOT is giving Broad Channel the attention it deserves,” Ulrich added. “Since Hurricane Sandy, my office has been working closely with Assemblyman Goldfeder to ensure that every community affected by the storm receives its fair
share of city services. Together, we have fought with community leaders to recover, rebuild and restore our way of life.” Last week, Goldfeder and Ulrich together with Dan Mundy Jr., President of the Broad Channel Civic Association met with DOT and DDC representatives to discuss the ongoing repaving and resurfacing project. Specifically they raised concerns about streets that were left out of the plans, including Shad Creek from West 9th to West 10th, East 6th Road, as well as nearly a dozen others due to lack of funding. DOT immediately responded to Goldfeder and Ulrich’s request by announcing new milling contracts to finish the work for all damaged side streets. “The Broad Channel Civic Association wants to thank Assemblyman Goldfeder and Councilman Eric Ulrich for their tremendous efforts in reaching out to DOT to ensure that all the side streets in Broad Channel are included in the current round of repaving,” Mundy said. All scheduled construction work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
