Get Ready to March It’s happening. The 47th Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade is officially on this year. And with 37 days ‘til parade day, it’s time to get into the spirit and show your support. The Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade was cancelled in 2021 after parade permits were cancelled citywide earlier in the year due to Covid. But this year, the march is on for March 5. It takes a lot of time, dedication and money to make the parade happen each year. Fund-

raising efforts are underway. It all kicked off with the Hearts and Shamrocks dance at St. Camillus in November, where this year’s parade honorees were announced, including Grand Marshal John Samuelsen, International President of the Transport Workers Union, as well as Rockaway Times Editor Katie McFadden, who is among the many deputy grand marshals this year. The next big event is coming up quick—the Gala Installation Dinner Dance at Antun’s in Queens Village. All honorees and groups are asked to turn in their paperwork for tables and journal ads to Parade Committee President Mike Benn as soon as possible, if they have not yet already done so. Organizations and businesses are also welcome to advertise their business and help support the

parade by taking out a journal ad in the event journal, which will be available at the dinner at Antun’s. Tickets to the Gala are also still available. Tickets, $125 each, include a cocktail hour and dinner, open bar and live music by The Celtic Justice Band on Saturday, February 12 from 7 p.m. to midnight. As the Queens County Parade Committee is a 501c3, all

parade contributions are tax deductible. For ticket or journal ad information, email Mike Benn at: kroppyboy@aol.com Donations can also be sent to P.O. Box 82, Rockaway Beach, NY 11693 or the Parade Committee c/o Michael Benn, 181 Beach 112th Street, Rockaway Park, NY 11694 For more information about the parade, check out: queenscountyparade.org

LOCAL COMMUNITY REACTS TO NYPD DEATHS By Katie McFadden

On the evening of Friday, January 21, the NYPD responded to a domestic violence call at an apartment building in Harlem. By the end of the interaction, two NYPD officers, PO Jason Rivera and PO Wilbert Mora were shot. Rookie PO Rivera, a 22-year-old newlywed, died instantly, and on Tuesday, January 25, PO Mora, a 27-year-old officer, succumbed to his injuries. The horrific incident sent shockwaves across the city. Now local communities are doing what they can to show police that they have their support in this difficult time. When responding to the call, both officers were allegedly shot by 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil. McNeil’s mother, Shirley Sourzes, had made the call after feeling threatened by her son. According to Lashawn McNeil’s Facebook pages, he grew up in Far Rockaway and had attended Beach Channel High School. After moving several times, his mother brought him to Harlem to help her with his ill younger brother, the New York Post reports. McNeil had a rap sheet dating back to 1998 for a gun possession arrest in South Carolina, assaulting a police officer in Pennsylvania in 2002, and in 2003, he was convicted on a drug possession charge in Far Rockaway, for which he was still on probation for. McNeil was shot during the altercation on Friday by rookie cop Sumit Sulan and died of his injuries on Monday, January 24. The deaths of Officer Rivera and then Officer Mora was felt across the city. Rockaway’s elected officials immediately reacted to PO Rivera’s death. In a social media post, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said, “I am heartbroken. He was only 22. Jason Rivera’s choice as a young man was to serve and protect US! I am grateful, grateful for the NYPD. I will never forget Jason Rivera. I pray for his family, friends and our City.”

In a statement, Senator Joe Addabbo said, “I send my condolences to the family and friends of P.O. Rivera, as well as the entire NYPD, during this difficult time and my prayers are for P.O. Mora's full recovery. This type of senseless violence needs to stop, and we must work together on the City and State levels to rationally address the gun violence in our city.” New District 32 Councilwoman Joann Ariola said, “How many Officers and innocents will have to die? How many families will have to grieve the loss of their loved ones? How many promises to keep our city safe will be made and not kept? Enough is Enough. As elected officials, we need to stop talking and start taking action. We need a clear plan for getting illegal guns off the streets and we need it NOW!” On Monday, Mayor Eric Adams announced his “Blueprint to End Gun Violence,” a series of steps to curb violence, including by adding more police patrols and ramping up efforts to remove illegal guns from the streets. In response to the shootings, Councilwoman Ariola is sponsoring Blue Bow fundraising events across District 32 along with local organizations. The effort includes purchasing blue ribbons to tie around trees and poles to show support for police, with donations going towards the families of Officers Rivera and Mora, as well as to show local precincts some love. While efforts are still in the works, Broad Channel has taken the helm to hold a Back the Blue Saturday event on January 29, in which folks are invited to salute the police and wave flags along Cross Bay Blvd. at 4 p.m. (Unclear if this will be postponed due to the impending storm). Broad Channel has also spearheaded a blue ribbon fundraiser, asking for $6 donations for ribbons. They have assigned block captain that are helping in this effort. For questions, call 646783-9351.

Can’t Escape I planned to spend my birthday in Paris. And brag about it. Pretty romantic, huh? But a cold front rolled through Texas and I headed to Oklahoma City instead, which was even colder. From what I read, Paris, Texas is a place that has an Eifel tower with a cowboy hat and after that it’s got all the excitement of Fort Tilden on Tuesday night in January. But I’m getting ahead of myself. I got on the road the second the temperature in Rockaway hit 16. I drove straight south. Which reminds me of the first joke I ever heard. Why do birds fly south for the winter? It’s too far to walk. The new joke was on all the frozen friends I left behind. I sped down I-95 towards sunny climes into Virginia. That’s when the snow started. I’d planned to stop deep in North Carolina but I’m like a Progressive Insurance commercial, always turning into somebody’s parents. Driving at night is not driving, it’s just hoping. You hope someone doesn’t walk in front of the car; you hope you see the exit. You hope you’re not about to drive off a cliff. And that’s regular night driving. Throw in some snow flurries and it’s a horror movie. Throw in general tiredness and it’s time to stop. After seven hours of highway driving and ¬–damn the sun sets early¬– you try to stretch your eyes open like you do when you’re surprised, but it doesn’t help. And then you start wondering if that guy in the huge 18-wheeler can see you or anyone else, or is he blind, too? You get off the highway, luckily, and you can’t even see the turn into the hotel parking lot. Again, you rely on hope. And then, no matter where the hotel is, from dump to palace, you wonder if the car is going to be

Page 5

safe. Doesn’t matter if you’re one, you’re surrounded by transients. Can’t trust ‘em. I’m afraid of 18 wheelers plowing into me and then I don’t trust the humans when I stop. It’s a wonder why I like hitting the road. My ultimate stop on this trip is Arizona because I hear it’s kinda warm there. It better be, because so far the chill won’t let me go. From Emporia, NC off I-95, I headed southwest and stopped in Winston-Salem. The curbs were buried in dalmatian snow, like you get in New York after three days. I drove to Asheville. With the snow and mountains, it felt like I was in the Poconos. I stayed a night then headed to Atlanta where it was 28 degrees. I stopped for gas and said, “Y’all what the hell?” to a bearded guy in a CPO. He asked for me 50 cents. It was freezing and I was getting hit up for change. It felt like 116th street. I headed to Hot Springs, Arkansas which was not hot. Temps were in the 30s. Side note. I must’ve missed the best of Arkansas because what I did see leaves me to believe it’s the most boring, borderline-ugly state. It’s scenery or lack of made North Dakota seem like Hawaii. Two other side notes: Hot Springs has the only Gangster Museum in the country and more men wear baseball caps here than anywhere else. I bought one in the next state, Oklahoma, just in case I had to blend like Cousin Vinny. Oklahoma was a big step up from the Razorback state. Wait, wait. Razorback. You know what that looks like? It fits Arkansas perfectly. It’s 21 degrees now, on Tuesday, in Oklahoma City. But I gotta say, Oklahoma City is better than Paris.

Ferrygoers Become Victims of Car Break-ins By Katie McFadden

On Monday, January 24, several folks who parked by the ferry landing before heading off to Manhattan or Brooklyn to start their work day, came back from their evening commute to find their car windows broken. Sometime after the 5:15 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. ferries, someone smashed at least five windows on vehicles parked on the northside of Beach Channel Drive near the ferry landing on Beach 108th Street. The damaged vehicles appeared random, making it seem that cars with items in them were targeted for robbery. According to a few ferry riders who reached out to The Rockaway Times, police were notified about the incident on Monday morning. One ferry rider called the 100th Precinct after seeing a man checking car doors at around 6 a.m. At that time, no cars had been damaged and the rider reported that police did not respond before

the 6:15 a.m. ferry left. Another ferry rider who was taking the 8:15 a.m. ferry called to report it after seeing the smashed windows and was allegedly told that the owners of the targeted vehicles would have to call and report the incident when they returned. According to residents, car break-ins have been an ongoing issue in the area for several months. Several residents have reported their windows being smashed and cars being broken into in the vicinity of Beach 108th Street. One resident of

Beach 108th said their car window was smashed twice, once in October and again just last Tuesday. The owner was allegedly told that there was nothing NYPD could do unless property was removed from the vehicle. One storeowner on Rockaway Beach Drive has security footage of someone looking into cars with a flashlight and breaking windows just before 7 a.m. in November 2021, but the hooded suspect is not easy to identify. Some expressed frustrations over what could be done even if a suspect was apprehended due

to bail reform laws set in 2020 resulting in suspects being immediately released and told to return to court for petty crimes. Following the incident on Monday, The Rockaway Times reached out to the 100th Precinct Community Affairs team to let them know about the incident and request more patrols. Community Affairs Officer Victor Boamah responded that the precinct was aware of the incident and would have increased patrols in the area. No break-ins were reported in the area on Tuesday.

***** Longtime educator, Barbara King, was featured on CNN’s Reliable Sources with Brian Stelter last Sunday. Barbara, a Belle Harbor resident, teaches media literacy 10 at PS 207 in Howard Beach, She told the show’s host, media literacy is "a skill my students really need; there's too much misinformation around us in the world." The cameras catch Barbara in the classroom talking with students about satire, false context, imposter content, manipulated content, and fabricated content. The kids were very much into it. There’s hope, there’s hope! ***** Ray Otton posted this on Facebook along with a photo of his meal and we had to share: "Last night while on a

zoom call I used Uber Eats to order Kimos RB. Due to an error on Uber's part that had my delivery address as THE WHITE HOUSE, the order wasn’t able to be completed before they closed. Mike (the owner) let us know that he would see to it that the order was complete, even if it took 24 hours. Sure enough, Mike himself delivered this delicious dinner tonight. He said 'I wanted to meet the President.' Top notch customer service. And by the way the food is outstanding." ***** Speaking of which, the new mayor has had to deal with the harsh realities of the job immediately. Police being killed and a general spike in gun violence has many in the city worried about returning to the bad old days of the late ‘80s, early ‘90s. Adams released a “Blueprint to End Gun Violence” which he called, “Not just a plan for the future — it is a plan for right now. Gun violence is a public health crisis. There is no time to wait. Locals Show Rockaway Love at RBQ for Team Sister Strong BY THE BEST DRESSED MAN IN ROCKAWAY

This past Saturday, January 23, locals came out Rockaway strong at RBQ to support Rockaway teen, Julia O’Sullivan’s Team Sister Strong LLS (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) Students of The Year Fundraising Challenge. Julia’s father, Jerry O’Sullivan, guest bartended along with regular RBQ tapster, George Ferguson, who had their hands full keeping up with the crowd. Local popular musician, Kevin Carlton, and his wife, Gina, performed live music that had the entire restaurant and bar singing and dancing, while paying it forward to a worthy cause. As DJ Shane kept the momentum going, by the end of the night, the 50/50 drawing netted $1,000. Julia, with the support of her Mary Louis Academy classmates, family and the Rockaway community at large, took on the challenge to raise money in honor of local LLS pa-

tient heroes, her younger sister, Siobhan, and fellow Broad Channel 11-year-old resident, Rocco Pisani, who are both in remission from leukemia. Julia’s Team Sister Strong hit the ground running when the fundraiser kicked off on January 13, and they have until March 3 to raise the most money possible. LLS Students of the Year Campaign is a six- to eight-week initiative in which nominated high school students, or teams of two to three students, participate in a fundraising challenge to benefit LLS. The candidate or team who raises the most money at the end of the program is named Student of the Year for their local chapter. While Saturday was a rousing success, there are still ways to help Julia and Team Sister Strong. This Saturday, January 29, starting at 3 p.m., John Moroney and RBQ hosts LLS Sister Strong Fundraiser Part 2 with guest alewives, the lovely Joanne Smith and Suzanne Culleton; live music by The Locals, 50/50s and more! Bungalow Bar is hosting a big raffle drawing on Friday, February 11, with a DJ starting at 7 p.m. Four hundred $100 tickets are being sold for $10,000 worth of prizes ranging from $200 to $1,000. For tickets, see Rob Pisani on Facebook (Rob Barista) or at Bagel & Barista Station on Beach 116th Street. The Pisanis have also set up donation options at Bagel & Barista for customers when they check out. Team Crate Puts MLK’s Lessons into Action By Katie McFadden

Over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, Team Crate was hard at work learning the lessons of Dr. King and making some of their own dreams come true. Team Crate, a community-based basketball and motivational youth program based in Far Rockaway, spent the threeday weekend achieving some big wins in a MLK basketball tournament and hosting a community discussion on ways to put their own dreams into action. From Saturday, January 15 through Monday, January 17, Team Crate’s youth participated in the Perimeter Sports MLK Hoop Dreamers Classic in Brooklyn. Inspired by Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, many of the participants shared their own dreams throughout the tournament, with many sharing hopes of one day making it to a Division 1 college team and the NBA. And the boys showed their dreams may not be too far. Their fifth grade and eighth grade teams both won their championships and their sixth and seventh grade teams both made it to the final game. For the Team Crate players, the tournament served as a good way to get back into the swing of competitive basketball. “When this opportunity came up, we thought it was a great chance for our kids who have been working out to get some exercise and get out after all of the Covid restrictions,” Team Crate leader Rashaun Banjo said. And it was good practice. “We’re gearing up for CYO. They’re having an abbreviated season but we’re starting up in another two weeks so the timing of this tournament gave them an opportunity to get in shape and something to look forward to.” For the kids, the tournament goes beyond basketball. “It goes back to the social/emotional stuff where you want to make sure kids are challenged. It brings out their social skills when they’re competing with kids their age and in some cases, they’re successful and win a championship, which is really great,” Banjo said. But Team Crate didn’t stop with basketball. They made ef-

forts to share the message of Dr. King by inviting the community in for discussion. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 17, Team Crate hosted a MLK Day of Community Discussion and Empowerment at P.S. 183 in Arverne with the Child Center of

NY, Farrock Strong, Victory Lap Realty, FRANC NYC and NYC Cornerstone. While Team Crate helps youth excel in athletics, their efforts go beyond the basketball court. The organization is making efforts to get more involved in the community. On December 29, Team Crate hosted a Community Day of Networking, and invited the community to connect with other business, organizations and individuals. Last Monday, that effort continued with a discussion inspired by Dr. King. “With the first event, we realized there’s a lot of outside support that adults need and with the rehabilitation of the Rockaways, people are eager to learn about partnering with the residential and business world. Our MLK event was centered around connecting our dreams, in the spirit of Dr. King, with what we want to get out of ourselves, our children and our communities,”

Banjo said. The event was inspired by Dr. King’s 1967 speech at Barratt Junior High School in Philadelphia, where he encouraged the youth to consider “What Is Your Life’s Blueprint?” Monday’s event opened with motivational speaker George Letrell. “He spoke about his experiences living in and growing up in a gentrifying and rehabbed Brooklyn and from there, we had a conversation about what our participation in community development is,” Banjo said. The youth were then asked to create vision boards inspired by their dreams while adults were tasked with working on “smart goals, which are goals that are set up so you can break them down into things that are realistic, relevant and attainable, and breaking those into building a blueprint for whatever goal you may have whether it’s going back to school or losing weight,” Banjo explained. The youth also came up with their own blueprints for their futures. “We have to start getting our community in the habit of setting goals and seeing progress toward those goals. I thought this was a great session. We already have an interest in doing it again,” Banjo said. Banjo explained that this session was inspired by the next level that Dr. King was working towards in his movement. “The Dr. King that we were about to see was moving toward this message around community development. He taught so much about civil rights, but he was working to-

wards silver rights and that is the economic wellbeing that people of color can take into consideration and build themselves and their communities. His dream was for all of us to have dreams and act upon them and become the advocate for our communities that he was for the masses. I hope we continue to progress in that message,” Banjo said. Team Crate is already working on their next event. They will be working with the Child Center of NY to host a six-week youth leadership workshop. “This series will hone in on youth leadership, community activism and the beginnings of financial literacy. Many youths from 16 to 21 start with a negative understanding of financial concepts and we’d like to have a foundational conversation about credit and debit and those pieces we work with to advance ourselves,” Banjo said. The program, hosted on Saturdays at P.S. 183, will be geared towards youth ages 12-18. Surf Guard TV Returns for Season 2 The family show on YouTube Kids, under SurfGuardTV is all about being righteous to each other and community accountability. Launched in 2020, the show, filmed in Rockaway, is back for Season 2! Surf Guard protects the shore and the waves in the west coast’s Sand Surf Swim Beach. Joined by his trusty sidekicks, City Planner Deb and Nerf, the trio work together to de-escalate, keep things groovy and hold a watchful eye over the always menacing, Kiki The Kook. From not littering, to rebuilding smashed sand castles, and even picking up after your pet’s dooky, Surf Guard is committed to creating positive change and won’t stand for anyone ‘kooking’ in his community. Made

for kids and those who are kids at heart, the message of Surf Guard is rooted in kindness, adventure and silliness. While Season One was set against the backdrop of the west coast surfing scene, Season Two brings the heroes to the east coast. This season, the show follows Surf Ranger (played by Lou Harris of The Black Surfing Association) as he watches over his beloved Rock Ride Wave Beach with his squad. When the creation of a new surf school comes about, he quickly realizes they’ll need some help from his west coast friends. Both worlds start to blend as Surf Guard and City Planner Deb make the move to join forces with Surf Ranger and the east

coast team. Lou Harris said “I loved having part of my life reflected in the script!” when discussing art imitating life in his acting debut. Created by Rockaway locals Keith Roenke and Nikki Borges, this filmmaking duo was inspired by their own backyard. “Rockaway Beach provided the perfect scenery for the vibe of ‘Rock Ride Wave Beach’. We are so proud to showcase our

amazing neighborhood and the community could not have been more supportive,” writer and actor Keith Roenke said. Although filming primarily took place on the sands of Beach 84th Street, production utilized local staples, such as Edgemere Farm in an episode to teach kids all about the wonders of urban farming. Be sure to catch new episodes through

March and see if you can spot other local favorites throughout the series on YouTube and YouTubeKids @SurfGuardTV. Surf Guard stars Keith Roenke (The Actor’s Gang), Nikki Borges (IFC’s Comedy Crib Commuters), Kevin William Paul (Bottom of the 9th) and Lou Harris (The Black Surfing Association). Season 2 is a ninepart series.

Courthouse, Edgemere Plan Top Land Use Meeting By Dan Guarino

On Thursday, January 21, Community Board 14’s Land Use and Housing Committee met to discuss issues affecting the shape of Rockaway. The online meeting, attended by 26 people, was co-facilitated by CB14 Chairperson Dolores Orr and Land Use Committee Chairperson Al Moore. Orr opened the meeting shortly after 7 p.m. First on the agenda was a presentation by NYC Department of Housing Perseveration and Development (HPD) Director of Queens & Staten Island Planning Kevin Parris. Illustrating with slides, Parris laid out several of his department’s proposals for the committee. Under the umbrella of HPD’s Resilient Edgemere Community Plan, these consisted of four proposals under the Uniform Land Use Review Process or ULURP. Parris described Resilient Edgemere as an inter-agency plan that identified possible options to mitigate flood risk, foster affordable housing, promote business and increase coastal resilience. “The geography has been a key factor in achieving these goals,” he said. Noting that Arverne and Edgemere are low-lying areas, he added, “The proposed plan seeks to move density away from Jamaica Bay. It includes downzoning to limit future development and looking at up-zoning near Rockaway Beach Boulevard to move density” away from the bay shore. Parris did say this was an advisory session. “This proposal is not seeking board approval for any particular project,” he explained, however they are looking for community input. The overall initiative itself has been underway since 2015, with an initial plan released by HPD in 2017. Currently, Parris stated, their goal is to “find a way to peel back residential development away from Jamaica Bay.” This would involve zoning to limit the area from Beach 41st to Beach 51st Streets adjacent to the Bay to 1-2 family detached houses only, and limit future

construction to one-family houses only. It includes allowing for more open space and waterfront recreation areas, which would further limit future development to a smaller scale. Moving inland, development would also be limited to 1-2 family homes, with smaller lots limited to 1-famly’s only. All buildings would have to be detached. While these plans received general approval from committee members, the next set of ideas did not. Parris stated NYC has identified land parcels with potential to take up the housing density created by moving away from Bay coast areas. Situated near public transit hubs, the proposed residential/ commercial/ mixed-use rezoning would stretch from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Beach Channel Drive and Beach 38th to Beach 47th Street. The aim is to direct development towards RBB’s higher elevation and away from the lower, at-risk shoreline. There are several possible city-owned properties, near Beach 38th Street between RBB and Rockaway Freeway, where HPD visualizes four to five buildings housing some 500 residents. Parris emphasized, “We just want to show the potential and have a discussion now for when these things are actually proposed. This is not set in stone and any (Request For Proposals) report would be based on community feedback.” Moore replied, “I am not comfortable with this. Not at all. Not after all the discussions about Far Rockaway and look what we got, which nobody is happy with. Citing the massive development at the former Mott Avenue shopping center, Chair-

person Orr remarked, “We supported what was proposed. Then HPD had a new strategy to rezone. We opposed it, but they went ahead anyway. Now we have thousands more people coming in than what we approved.” Others noted the already densely populated peninsula, is becoming even more so as larger development projects spring up. Inadequate infrastructure is already a problem, and there would be grave difficulties if mass evacuation was needed ahead of life-threatening storms. Moore added, “I am just concerned that this will not be a real conversation and will not reflect what is really wanted by the community. (There will be) more conversations…and then HPD does whatever it wants.” Parris conceded that any formal plans would be at least a year out and would have to go through the official Land Review process before any RFP’s could be issued. He also made a commitment to bring the committee’s concerns back to his department and continue discussion with CB14. Next on the agenda, developer Uri Kaufman, CEO of Harmony Group, and Allie Curreria, associate at the Greenberg Traurig, LLP law firm, presented a request for a variance for the Rockaway Courthouse on Beach Channel Drive. Shuttered in 1962, it has remained unused for 60 years. “The building was in poor shape, and needed much work,” Kaufman explained. “We took title from the City in 2015, with a deed restriction to use it only as a medical center.” At the time, Peninsula Hospital had just closed, and Harmony already had an agreement to lease the space to a medical group. The agreement, however, later fell through, and since then the Addabbo Center has expanded and the Rockway Medical Arts has been built. Even hiring a company which contacted potential medical practice tenants all over the tristate proved unsuccessful. Harmony therefore was requesting a variance which would allow them to seek busi-

ness tenants needing office space. “There is not a single office building from Mott Avenue on up. We feel there is a definite need for this. We feel this would be a tremendous advantage to Rockaway to have people be able to work from Rockaway and not have to commute to Manhattan.” Curreria added the proposed commercial office space would only be in use during the day, includes parking, would not create a hardship for community, and wouldn’t change the character of the neighborhood. Harmony and Greenberg Traurig are also working with the Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA) as the courthouse falls in their area. In response to committee members’ questions, Kaufman and Curreria confirmed the specific variance would only allow for office space, not retail, restaurants, gym, bodywork or hotel uses. Members also had questions, in light of the pandemic, on air circulation. Kaufman noted that between the original 25-ceilings and renovations originally designed for medical use, ventilation would not be an issue. To the question of whether a future developer could change the proposed usage, Kaufman responded, “It’s even better than that. We are not allowed to sell it for 20 years. And any new owner would have to go through the current NYC Economic Development division process and be approved by the Community Board.” RBCA President Bridget Klapinski noted they would shortly be voting on the proposed variance and relay the results to the Community Board. Finally, the committee confirmed that developer Arker Companies had indeed sold their interest in the former Peninsula Hospital site to Tishman Speyer Properties. The development plan, which includes 11 buildings, would remain the same. The committee agreed to proactively engage with Tishman Speyer and invite representatives to CB14’s February meeting. The meeting adjourned just before 9 p.m.

Memorial Circle Support Dear Editor: Thank you for mentioning our fundraiser to revamp the flower beds at Memorial Circle. Our goal is to raise $15,000 of which $5,000 has been raised. So now we need 100 centurions to donate $100 each. Already we have one centurion. Now we need just 99 more! Donations can be made to The Friends of Memorial Circle at PO Box 940174, Rockaway, NY 11694. We can do this! Maureen Walsh Bad Vibrations Dear Editor: Since 6:30 a.m. on September 7, 2021, the dunes area between Beach 116-117th Streets has been used as a staging ground for the rock jetties. At 7 a.m. on the dot, at least 1218 trucks dump boulders and rocks of all sizes on the beach approximately 100 feet or less from my building. Throughout the rest of the day the trucks continue to dump and rearrange rocks into large mounds of three stories high. The noise is horrendous. The vibrations are unnerving and the dust from the rocks is finding its way into the apartments situated so closely to the rock mountains. The contractors have the area for one year for phase I and two more years for possible other projects. Phase I was supposed to end by the summer but latest reports are that it will continue during the summer. One of my concerns is the long-term effects of the vibrations on the buildings near this area. The contractors have two machines measuring vibrations in the building that only measure vibrations on a oneoff basis but they cannot tell us what the effects of long-term vibrations of this magnitude will be. More immediately, my

THURSDAY, JANUARY 27, 2022 biggest concern is the dust that is spreading into apartments. Rock and stone dust can be toxic to inhale, even as shortterm as 3 months. Air purifiers really aren't helping. Bad enough now with windows closed but when the warmer weather comes, what are we to do when we are not able to open our windows or use our a/c during the heat? This is a very difficult situation to be in. Although the project might be for the good of the peninsula, the way the staging area is configured so close to the building is an undue burden for us. At the very least, the mountains need to be moved farther away from the buildings. In September and October, I wrote to the Army Corps of Engineers and to our representatives to no avail. Through this letter, I am now reaching out to our new City Councilwoman Ariola for assistance and our neighbors for support. I am appealing to anyone who could help us. Thank you. Noreen Horan We’ve Had Enough Dear Editor: A letter I wrote to the Mayor, City Council, state Senators, and Assemblyperson Re: the state of our city. Change can only come if we collectively make our voices heard. The time for action is now. Tell your representatives you have had enough. Good morning. I am writing to you with a heavy heart, as we witness the deterioration of my once great city. Police officers being murdered, and babies being shot, with no plan for how to stop this, is unacceptable. Current policies are allowing our city’s descent into chaos. Our government has purposefully tied the hands of law enforcement, and loosened its grip on its worst criminals, allowing them free reign to terrorize and destroy the fabric that holds NYC together. Our officers, who run towards danger every single day to protect and serve the citizens of this city, should have its gratitude and protection, not its defamation and scorn.

We, the people, have had enough. You are our representatives, and we demand an end to dangerous felony crimes being downgraded to misdemeanors; we demand an end to no bail for violent offenders; we demand an end to the revolving door through which the same criminals pass daily, with virtually no penalties for robbing, stealing, assault; we want an end to the harmful and divisive vitriol from progressive politicians, demanding to de-fund police and demonizing them for the extraordinarily difficult and dangerous jobs they do every day. They need our support, not inflammatory and misguided rhetoric. We want the plainclothes task forces back on the streets, getting guns off the streets and preventing crime. These units create order from chaos. NYC was one of the safest cities in the country a few short years ago. Do the right thing, Mr Mayor. Do not bow to the extreme factions of your party. We, the people, have had enough. Bernadette Maxfield MLK Response Dear Editor: I’m submitting this in response to your High Tide piece regarding the MLK quotes that were pasted on the construction fence. Specifically, the quote on display was “White Americans must recognize that justice for Black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society.” Your outrage was placed on the fact that the quote was displayed on private property. That societal structure that Dr. King is referring to is what you’re upholding when you publish opinions that value property over people. Why are you more concerned with the construction fence than with communicating his message to our community? Apparently, photos of the actual display weren’t important enough for you to publish. You refused to do so under the false pretense that you’d be condoning vandalism. Our community’s obsession with law and order (when it applies to other people and in this case, the use of

The Rockaway Times private property that is an eyesore itself ) continues to impede the important work that MLK did and that is still so vital to dismantling white supremacy. Another quote of Dr. King’s that I think our neighbors will find particularly relevant is: “Property is intended to serve life and no matter how much we surround it with rights and respect, it has no personal being.” Your “lukewarm acceptance,” as MLK would call it, speaks volumes. Do better. Carolina Willsen Dear Editor: I regularly read your paper, and generally enjoy being kept up to date with the goings-on of my home here in Rockaway. I am truly disappointed that in your latest edition, you took the space in your paper to print a write up of the "vandalism" that occurred on a construction fence, during the week created to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s work. That construction fence has seen graffiti and posters for years now, with no print complaints coming out of it. I don't think it's the act of writing on a wall that's bothering you, I suspect it has something to do with you feeling threatened by the concept of radical change that would mean justice for all, not just police and Trump supporters. You published the quote "White Americans must recognize that justice for Black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society" and then, in the next sentence, proceeded to hold up the very structures of our society that prevent true justice for all. You perpetuated white supremacy by valuing property over people. I'm disappointed, and frankly, really turned off by your commitment to stand with this status-quo, rather than be bold and show up as an ally for the change we truly need. I hope you're able to read this comment, and any others like it, and hear that we are yearning for that justice, and we look to you, as a news outlet, to facilitate and spread change, not stand against it. Marieke Bender

Facts You Probably Don’t Need Harriet Tubman was born in Thomas Jefferson's lifetime and died in Reagan's.

OPEN DOORS AND CRAWL SPACES Rockaway is blessed with our share of wild squirrels, opossums, etc. With the advent of cooler weather, I am reminded of some experiences which my friends and neighbors have had with four legged creatures. It seems as though some of these animals aspire to enjoy the warmth and/or food found indoors during the winter months. A friend of mine found garbage cans inside his house turned over, and the food pantry ransacked. After much consternation and investigation, he found that the animal obtained entry through an open crawl space window. A

professional trapper was hired to catch the opossum and humanely release it afterwards. Another friend had been bothered by noise in his attic late at night. It turned out to be a squirrel who had obtained entry through the small hole in the roof used for antenna wires. A small wire mesh closed the entry point. The squirrel was trapped and released. Some animals have been known to sneak into homes through doors kept ajar to facilitate unloading packages – especially in cold weather. Be vigilant and close doors and crawl spaces. Call me. Peace Is In Every Step “My pain is like a river of tears, so vast it fills the four oceans.” - Thich Nhat Hanh On January 22, 2022 a very special man passed away at his home in Vietnam, Thich Nhat Hanh. He was 95 years old. On that same day, two NYC Police Officers were gunned down by a violent, mentally disturbed person. Police Officer Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora have died in service to our city. My heart was broken for the loss of

their precious lives. The tragic deaths of the Police Officers were difficult to comprehend. I prayed for Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings to help ease the pain of such a senseless death. There is much suffering in our city and it seems somewhat out of control. Thich Nhat was a sacred being who brought much peace and serenity to so many in our world. His spirit will carry on in his teachings. I have profound

gratitude to this deeply beautiful and wise soul. His wisdom and knowledge had been shared throughout the world. He helped shift people’s perspective and brought a sense of peace and serenity in a broken world. He was compassionate to all and endured great suffering when he was exiled from his country. He shared his wisdom and love to this world. Some of his encouraging words were in his story…” When the crowded Vietnamese refugee boats met with storms or pirates, if everyone panicked all would be lost. But if even one person on the boat stayed calm and centered it was enough. It shows a way for everyone to survive.” Thich Nhat Hanh was steady and focused. He reminds us in the following poem he is not gone. "This Body is Not Me" by Thich Nhat Hanh “This body is not me. I am not limited by this body. I am life without boundaries. I have never been born, and I have never died. Look at the ocean and the sky filled with stars,

manifestations from my wondrous true mind. Since before time, I have been free. Birth and death are only doors through which we pass, sacred thresholds on our journey. Birth and death are a game of hide-andseek. So, laugh with me, hold my hand, let us say good-bye, say goodbye, to meet again soon. We meet today. We will meet again tomorrow. We will meet at the source every moment. We meet each other in all forms of life.” Thank you for your beautiful teachings. You were a gentle, kind soul to all you encountered. You also inspired so many to follow in your footsteps and we will carry your spirit to all we meet. God bless to all who have lost a loved one. Perhaps these words will give you some peace. May you heal and be at ease. May you be free of suffering and live with an open heart. Faith over Fear. “Breathing in I calm my body and mind, Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.”

By Beth Hanning Betting On Better Things To Come In case you have not seen the barrage of sports betting advertisements, sports betting is now legally allowed in New York State. Now I love JB Smooth, aka Leon from “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” but I am done with seeing him dressed as a Roman Emperor on the commercials all day long. And come on, his wife/empress is Halle Berry? That is another column entirely. One of the reasons why this is a fabulous idea is the rev-

enue that it will bring to the State. According to Forbes Magazine, “the State has already collected $200 million in licensing fees. In 2023 the state expects to collect $357 million and $465 million in 2024.” By 2027, it is expected to be over $500 million in revenue. Wow, that is fabulous, because in New York City we need a lot of things. However, the article also states that a percentage of the revenue will fund programs that

address gambling addiction. The irony of this to me is amazing. Let’s make something legal that will bring in revenue then we will fund programs from that revenue that will help the people who lost their shirts betting on sports. The remaining money will go to education similarly to Quick Draw and The Lottery. I am curious to see where this money will go in education. Because with all of these revenue sources, the education department should be flush with cash. Maybe some of the things I need in my world of education is more heat. The custodian used to come in and check the radiator and he would say what needed to be done…Today, January 25, it is 39 degrees at 9:55 a.m. and my radiator is ice cold. I am already planning my outfit for tomorrow’s drop in temperature. Another thing that does not work in my classroom are all of the outlets. I am, by no means, an electrician but I feel we need an electrical upgrade. When the building was built in the 1960s,

we did not have a laptop cart with 36 laptops, two printers, two desktops, and a projector. Not to mention the students coming in each period and asking to charge their phones. PS: It blows their mind that I charge mine at bedtime each night ONLY because I am not on it all day. A local Rockaway school, where a few of my friends work, told the staff and students before Christmas break that they could not flush the toilets. Yes, you heard me correctly. Again, my area of expertise is not plumbing or health services but I do think this is a health issue? I wonder where I send my wish list? I was upset that infrastructure was not on the list of things that would be funded but maybe that could be from the massive revenue of speed and red-light cameras? I know my family and some of my friends have made a few “donations” to that project. Have a good week everyone! Please send me topics for the column at MrsHanning308@ gmail.com.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, developers designed SARS-CoV-2 antibody tests to detect whether people had been infected. Some experts hoped that these tests would help ease lockdowns, as those with antibodies likely would be, temporarily at least, immune to reinfection therefore allowing them to reenter society without putting themselves and others at risk. But as the pandemic unfolded, the idea of an immunity passport didn’t pan out. The reliability of early tests was questionable, plus it wasn’t known which antibodies protected against which variant and how high the antibody levels needed to be to assure immunity. So as time wore on, the public’s clamor for antibody testing waned, at least until the advent of the vaccines. Then the question became could a blood

Page 35

THURSDAY, JANUARY 27, 2022

Antibodies test evaluate the effectiveness of a vaccine and the length of time the vaccine provides a reliable defense. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discouraged antibody testing as a doit-yourself immunity check, and last September an FDA spokesman for the agency reiterated that position in an email published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Many ignored that advice. An article published in a November edition of the New York Times described concierge clinicians who were regularly testing their clients for COVID-19 antibodies, and based on these tests, advising the clients when they should get a booster vaccine. The problem isn’t just that the tests weren’t designed to assess immunity, it’s also that the protective antibodies and their thresholds haven’t been fully worked out yet. The issue is rather complex. For starters, not all antibodies are “neutral-

izing” antibodies. Neutralizing antibodies correlate with immunity whereas non-neutralizing ones bind to the virus but do not impart protection. Plus, antibodies obtained through viral illness differ from those obtained by vaccination. Also, as we have seen, both vaccination and prior illness do not provide complete protection from reinfection, although the severity of illness in those who are vaccinated or had a prior infection is mild in most cases. Meanwhile, antibody tests have yet to be standardized. As of late last November, only one commercially available SARSCoV-2 antibody tests made by Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics had been calibrated to the World Health Organization standard. Yet, as noted above, all antibodies bind to the virus but not all neutralize it and, so far, differentiating between those two types of antibodies is not possible. Even if the test could differentiate between those two types

of antibodies, antibodies are only a part of the body’s overall immune response. White blood cells, specifically memory T cells and memory B cells, which last at least six to eight months in the bloodstream, are responsible for a significant portion of immunity. Reinfection causes these memory cells to morph into antibody-secreting cells, a process that can take three to five days. This may explain why reinfection among those with immunity usually results in a mild, shortened illness. How often booster shots will be necessary remains to be seen. As one expert put it, repeatedly giving booster shots is like “rolling a stone up a hill, only to have it roll back down.” Ultimately, medical advice will probably continue to be vaccination and avoidance of and masking in crowded indoor settings, especially in high case-rate areas. New York Privacy Act Reintroduced The New York Privacy Act (NYPA) was recently reintroduced in the State legislature for the 2021 – 2022 legislative session. Previous versions were introduced in earlier legislative sessions but did not move forward. If enacted into law, the NYPA could potentially be the most comprehensive state privacy law in the country, even broader than similar laws in California, Virginia, and Colorado. It would create an expansive set of consumer rights and impose obligations on data controllers (those who determine the purposes and means of process-

ing personal data) and third parties. Similar to other states’ laws, consumer rights under the NYPA would include the right to know the categories of personal data collected, sources, and purposes of collection; identities of outside parties to whom the data is disclosed; info about how data will be used and for how long it will be retained; the right to access, correct and delete their personal information; the right to data portability; and anti-discrimination rights. Data controllers would need to obtain opt-in consent instead of opt-out consent (which other comprehen-

To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

sive state laws provide) prior to using personal data or making processing changes. The State Attorney General would have enforcement authority. The NYPA would also provide consumers with a broad private right of action (the ability to bring an action themselves for violation of the law), unlike other comprehensive state laws. In addition, the NYPA would impose upon a data controller a strict legal obligation or “duty of loyalty” not to use consumers’ personal information in a way that would harm them. Data controllers would also be required to institute certain practices, for example, conduct annual risk assessments and implement reasonable safeguards to protect personal data. The NYPA does not provide for a “cure” period, contained in other comprehensive state laws, during which a violation can be cured before enforcement commences. At present, the U.S. does not have one comprehensive national law that governs data privacy of all kinds of data (unlike

the EU where personal data is governed by the General Data Protection Regulation). The U.S. has national sectoral laws governing specific types of data (for example, certain health data, data relating to consumer financial products, children under 13, credit report data, etc.). In addition, many states have laws regulating specific aspects of data privacy (including biometric data, data brokers, employee monitoring, security breach). These laws differ and often present compliance challenges for companies doing business across state lines. It will be interesting to see what the NYPA morphs into over the course of the legislative process if it moves forward. If enacted as written, it will be yet another diverse patch in the growing patchwork of conflicting state laws, making comprehensive national privacy legislation all the more logical and likely. FOOD AND BEVERAGE INSIDER THE HIDDEN GEMS OF WINTER WINES By Natalie Crooks and James Mallios

The first few months of the new year can be, frankly, a real drag. The days are short and bitter cold, and the holidays are over. Most of us fall into patterns of work, eat, sleep, repeat while we wait for the first sign of spring. There are a few small pleasures I like to indulge in this time of year to beat the winter gloom and one of them is full-bodied red wines. Most people go to grab a Cabernet Sauvignon-forward blend like those found in France’s Bordeaux region. While Bordeaux makes some of the best wines in the world, there are other wine regions in southern France which make excellent red wine but are often overlooked. Much of southern France is known for producing outstanding rosés, but let’s explore some of the lesser known, albeit superb, red wines of southern France.

When thinking of rosé, Provence is one of the most popular regions people look to. The Provence-style rosé is so popular that regions all over the world have begun mimicking it, but there is one area in Provence producing top-notch red wines perfect for sipping while the snow falls. Bandol is a tiny appellation located in southern Provence right on the Mediterranean, just east of Marseille. These rich, peppery reds are made primarily with the grape Mourvèdre, creating full-bodied, tannic red wines. Notes of anise, chocolate and dark fruit make these wines an excellent pairing for rich, meaty dishes like a French dip sandwich. These rich wines are perfect for aging and decanting and hold up nicely to spicy dishes. Try Chateau Pradeaux, Bandol 2015 for a leathery and oaky example. West of Provence, we move over to the Languedoc-Roussil-

lon region, nestled in central southern France on the Mediterranean. While Languedoc-Roussillon might not have the same name recognition as Provence, the wines from this region are certainly note-worthy. Primarily known for red blends, the wines are often composed of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Fans of Rhône wines will enjoy these earthy blends. Some of the notable appellations are Corbières, Minervois and St. Chinian. Try Les Clos Perdus ‘Prioundo’ Corbières 2017 for a medium-bodied mid-week wine, enjoy with some French onion soup to beat the cold! A budget-friendly alternative for the Bordeaux drinker can be found in Southwest France. Just south of Bordeaux and bordering the Atlantic Ocean, this region produces Malbec and Tannat amongst other grapes, and this region is the birthplace of Malbec. Cahors is the most

well-known appellation in this region, known for “black wine” Malbec, these wines are full and dark with notes of plum and tobacco, the perfect pairing with a juicy steak. Argentinian wine lovers should not overlook these wines. Another grape, Tannat, is also grown in this region and is characterized by silky tannin, black fruit and espresso. A great match for duck confit and mushrooms. Try out some southern French reds to pass the time this winter and before you know it, we’ll be sipping rosé in the sunshine! (James Mallios is the managing partner of Bar Marseille. He was born and raised in what he recently learned is called “North Queens” He is joined this week by colleague Natalie Crooks).

Wrestle Talk MAKING WRESTLING FUN AGAIN By Eric Jayden

This past Sunday, January 23, the wrestling world saw a promotion that started like every other Independent Promotion holding shows in small venues of about 100 to 200 people, to hosting thousands at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The company is called Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) and in my book this opened the door to making Pro Wrestling business competitive and fun again. Throughout the years, wrestling has been majority control by one company and that's the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and although there were various wrestling promotions out there and some trying to compete with the WWE, they just couldn't beat the Marketing Power the WWE had. This, for me, left a void—a huge void because having one

company control every aspect of wrestling from production, to training, to marketing, the WWE influence a lot of what went on in the world of pro wrestling. To the many wrestling fans that were left out there looking for something different, they had to turn to their Local Independent Wrestling Promotions and some even watching wrestling from other countries like Japan. Now, many small independent wrestling promotions start with a dream of building their brand into a profitable and well-known promotion and for many of those companies, some achieve a level of success as a regional promotion and one or two actually get to the level that they start touring to other states. What Game Changer Wrestling did was to come from humble beginnings and take their brand

center stage to the mecca of entertainment NYC and host a show in a major venue, sell out that venue and televise it worldwide via Pay Per View. This in my book put Game Changer Wrestling at a new level of success and it open the door for GCW to be able to compete at the big stage of pro wrestling. This also gives strong independent talent an opportunity with anoth-

er company to work for other than WWE, AEW, ROH and IMPACT Wrestling. January 23, 2022, saw the birth of a lot of great things for GCW. Let’s hope they continue to grow so the business can grow and we can continue to make Wrestling Fun Again. Questions or Comments send them in to eavil183@ yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
