Boat Mystery Traced Back to Rockaway By Katie McFadden

Is someone looking for a boat? Or purposely avoiding looking for one? Last week, New Jersey media reported that a powerboat mysteriously washed up on the northern shore of Asbury Park, NJ on Christmas Eve. The engine of the red, white and blue boat named “Brave Heart” was missing, the hatch on the bow was missing, its electrical panel was damaged and it seems to have been stripped of valuable equipment. But according to Asbury Park photographer, Ben Ruset, the keys remained in the ignition. Deepening the mystery, an eerie message saying, “I will miss you” was written on the side of the boat. The message led some online commenters to speculate that the owner committed suicide or the boat may have been abandoned by the ex-partner of a scorned lover. Some speculated that the boat has been floating around since Hurricane Sandy. The vessel contained a 2015 registration sticker, which would seem to void that idea, but a New York boat registration lasts for three years, so it could have been registered before Sandy. News 12 reported that the boat had a

sticker for the Gateway Marina in Brooklyn. The hull number is N 2224 PT and the registration number is 50185548, which Asbury Park police used to find information on the owner. The owner lives in Rockaway Beach. “We’re treating it now as found property,” Asbury Park police officer Michael Casey told NJ.com. “We don’t suspect any type of suspicious activity or foul play.” The boat was not reported missing or stolen. The police tracked down the owner, but they have not been able to get in touch with him. The Rockaway Times reached out to the Asbury Park Police Department for more information, but as we went to press, there was no response. NJ.com said Asbury Park

police notified police in Rockaway about the boat and asked them to find the owner, but Captain Adelman of the 100th Precinct said he had never even heard anything about the boat, until the Times reached out to him. The police’s inability to get in touch with the owner led some to believe that the owner doesn’t want to be found and may have abandoned the boat for an insurance claim or simply because costs to maintain it became too expensive. However it isn’t typical for someone who wants insurance money, to abandon a boat without first scratching off the name and registration sticker so that the owner can’t be traced. While the mystery of the owner

has not yet been solved, The Rockaway Times has solved the mystery of the “I will miss you” message scrawled on the side. The message isn’t the work of a suicidal sailor, a crazy ex, or even the owner, whoever it may be. It was written by a graffiti artist. The “I will miss you” message is written in the exact style that it is written in on various spots like bridges, walls, trucks, mailboxes, garbage, and billboards in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The message is the work of a New York musician and mixed media artist who uses the Instagram account “whatwillyouleavebehind.” It so happens, the street artist’s own work, a sculpture, was tagged some time ago with the “I will miss you” message. He liked it enough to start doing it himself and started using the slogan as part of an art campaign in 2013, tagging the message on various found items that were left behind. In an Instagram post, the artist says “The ‘I will miss you’ project is a commentary about how humans move so fast through life and forget so easily about the people, places and things left behind. Remembering Fallen Heroes Community Pays Respect At 100th Precinct An overflow crowd gathered at the 100th Precinct on the evening of Monday, January 5 to show support for the NYPD and fallen officers, Detective Wenjian Liu and Detective Rafael Ramos. There was unity in the sentiment that flowed through the crowd, which included members of the 100th Precinct community, from Breezy Point to Arverne. The vigil, organized by Councilman Eric Ulrich and the 100th Precinct Community Council, was supposed to be held outside, but chilly temperatures and wind moved the crowd inside to the muster room of the precinct. Community members held candles and signs and had a moment of silence as they paid respect to Detectives Liu and Ramos, who were assassinated in Brooklyn on December 20, 2014. Those who gathered also remembered the fallen officers of the 100th Precinct, who gave their lives while serving the community over the years, including Patrolman John Kennedy - killed December 3, 1922; Patrolman Hubert Allen - killed August 5, 1927; Patrolman Arthur Fash - August 4, 1928 and Police Officer Joey Alcamo - killed March 26, 1992.

January Boardwalk Update beach access structures will begin and new sand will be brought to the site to be placed under the new boardwalk. In Phase 3, between Beach 108th and Beach 126th Street, the existing boardwalk piles, caps and firestops will continue to be removed. A sand fence will be installed and beach grass will be planted to establish the dune. Work will continue in both sections of Phase 4, which includes Beach 72nd to Beach 86th Street in Phase 4A and Beach 60th to Beach 72nd Street in Phase 4B. Removal of the existing boardwalk piles, caps, precast planks and firestops will continue in Phase 4A. The company will conduct preconstruction visual surveys of residential homes and building complexes within 200 feet of pile driving operations. Pipe and H pile driving for the new boardwalk will then commence. During January, certain beach access points in Phase 1 and 2 will be closed. So far, the installation of the pipe piles, H-piles, sand retaining wall and 90 percent of pile caps has been completed in Phase 1. Removal of the existing boardwalk piles and caps, site grading work and pipe and H-pile driving has been completed in Phase 2.

The Parks Department has released its January update on the boardwalk reconstruction project. This month, work is expected to take place in four of the five phases of the project, spanning Beach 60th to Beach 126th Street. Parks is expecting to have a major stretch of boardwalk where the concessions are, finished by July 4 of this year. In Phase 1, from Beach 86th to Beach 97th Street, construction company, Skanska will continue to install pile caps which will support the precast boardwalk planks, continue installing utilities like plumbing and electrical and the construction site fence will be relocated for work on beach access ramps on the beach side of the new boardwalk at Beach 94th St and Beach 91st Street. Pile driving for beach access structures will begin and new sand fill will be placed under the new boardwalk. In Phase 2, between Beach 98th and 108th Street, retaining wall panels, pile caps and utilities will be installed. The crane from Phase 1 will be brought to Phase 2 to install the pile caps. the ridicule and howling laughter will cascade. It’s ok, there’s always someone who can top you. I don’t think the Bee Gees meant anything else other than More Than A Woman though apparently many people thought they were singing about a Bald Headed Woman. Some are your own. I suspect the girl on an old show had this one to herself: Her version of “God Bless America” included, “… stand beside her, and guide her, through the night with a light from a bulb.” There’s a word for all this because it’s been happening for centuries. You’ve managed to utter a Mondegreen when you sing “The girl with colitis goes by” when you really should have known the Beatles sang “the Girl with Kalaidescope eyes.” Charlie Brown cartoons, apparently, had a great influence on some people. How else can you explain what went in their ears? “Lucy’s in a fight, with Linus” made more sense to some than “Lucy in the sky with diamonds.” I kinda like the one by Dianna Ross and The Supremes: Stop! In the name of love. Some people had an inviting interpretation: Stop! In the neighborhood! And while we’re on neighborhoods, Rockaway Beach was misheard, too. The misheard lyric? I’ve got San Francisco on the radio. That wasn’t quite the actual lyric which was: They blast out the disco on the radio. Boyleing over: Raise your hand if you kept your days straight the last two weeks. With Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve on Wednesday and then the holidays on Thursdays you couldn’t tell what day it was.

The holidays bring families together and that means going down memory lane, which, in some families, is like joining the demolition derby. Sometimes memories start a brawl and other times they just trigger confessions. Once you admit you thought the song was Deck the Halls with Buddy Holly it won’t be long before someone fesses up and says they thought Grandma got run over by a reindeer walking from the outhouse Christmas eve. And why wouldn’t you think Grandma was coming from the outhouse with that goober singing? Other classics misheard from the Yule log might say more about you than you want to let on. Did you think it was “Adolph the other reindeer?” Did you see a little mustache under his shiny nose? “Olive the other reindeer” used to laugh and call him names. This was the more common way people misheard the lyric. Lots of people hated Olive as a result. The mere mention of a misheard lyric will have others confessing. Usually, you can feel superior and say, now THAT one’s really dumb. A hit song from the ‘70s, Blinded By The Light, was given new meaning by my brother who crooned along with the song. Trouble was, he was singing, Blind Dates Are A Delight. Even if you didn’t mishear the lyric you purposely sang There’s a Bathroom on the Right whenever Credence Clearwater’s Bad Moon Risin’ came on. It sounded just as good as There’s a Bad Moon on the Rise. Of course, you can go through life believing Bob Dylan is singing “The ants are my friends, they’re blowing in the wind.” But chances are you’re gonna sing it aloud one day and some friend will ask you to repeat it. And you will. And then

We love the idea that the folks who run the Bungalow Bar (and other places) are looking to build a boutique hotel on Beach 109 and the Boulevard. It’s a long-standing complaint that visitors can’t find a place to stay (besides the D Piper!). A new spot would be great for the area especially since Beach 108 is in line to get beautification money. ***** If you can’t find The Rockaway Times at the newsstand or a store that carries it, you might try looking for it under other publications gathering dust. Most people believe you’ve got to “go under” for it to be official. That is, you’ve got to put your head in the water. What made this year’s dip particularly challenging was the low tide. Dear Editor: As the son of former Police Officer Sam Gallagher of the 100th Precinct (1926-1956), my heart is heavy for the loss of Officers Liu and Ramos and their families and their brethren in the NYPD. Recipe Tweak Dear Editor: Just a note…I tried the Fancy Pants chicken recipe. I used regular chicken cutlets that I sliced thin myself and ham that I already had instead of spending money on prosciutto. The dish had so much flavor and was tender. Sham and A Shame Dear Editor: It’s a shame and a sham that we continually have to jump through imaginary hoops just to receive what’s rightfully due to us. It is truly tiresome, constantly getting browbeat by the city. Bottom line is Rockaway Beach has been the redheaded stepchild for years and I don’t see it changing. Don’t get me wrong; it’s still the best place to live in NYC by far. No community has more resilience or pride. It’s a place where neighbors are also friends. I just don’t understand how the Army Corps of Engineers needs 10 years to study rock jetties. What kind of engineers are they anyway?? Why is a ferry out of the question for people who live on a peninsula? And please tell me why there are only five guys trying to rebuild our boardwalk. As an outdoor worker for over 35 years, this has been a very mild fall where they could have attacked and completed a big portion of the boardwalk. It’s been a total disgrace and a big slap in the face to

Private citizens and small businesses don’t wait for government; they act. It’s only after the efforts of regular people that government and officials come onboard. Brooklyn has seen an incredible amount of investment from government. Now Long Island City is the new darling. But truth is, people were finding their niches in these places ten and twenty years ago. The trailblazers in these areas weren’t waiting for the City to help; they knew that wouldn’t happen. In Rockaway, we bemoan the City’s effort on the boardwalk rebuild. We rage at the Mayor for taking away the ferry.

But the trailblazers are here. They’re not waiting for the City. The boardwalk won’t be a catalyst; it will be a cherry on top. The ferry will come back because ridership and interest in Rockaway is on a trajectory upwards that can’t be denied (or beaten by an indifferent City Hall). The latest sign that Rockaway is moving, that a bud is going to blossom, is the plan to turn a dilapidated property on Beach 109 and Rockaway Beach Boulevard into a boutique hotel. We couldn’t be more in favor of this idea and urge the Community Board to support the efforts of these homegrown entrepreneurs. The Tubridy family has deep roots in Rockaway and Broad Channel. A few of them are involved in this project. They know

Rockaway. They really know Rockaway. They will be sensitive to community needs while turning a piece of coal into a diamond. Their trailblazing efforts will be noticed. Good investment money will follow. The Beach 108th Street corridor is supposed to get beautification money from Sandy funds. It will look a lot more beautiful if a thriving hotel is supported. While shopping recently in the Howard Beach Rite Aid, I ran into our Broad Channel neighbor, Gwen O’Toole. I hadn’t seen Gwen since she and her husband Frank and their children moved from W12th Road to Noel Road last August. Right after the move, Gwen experienced some medical problems requiring surgery and a hospital stay and it was great to see that she has been recovering nicely. For those of you not familiar with the O’Toole family, you should know that immediately after Super Storm Sandy, they served as an inspiration for all their neighbors on West 12th Road. Less than 48 hours after the October 29th, 2012 storm surge, while the rest of us were walking around like zombies feeling sorry for ourselves, Gwen and Frank quietly decided...”Screw Sandy, we have small children and Christmas is coming - our family will be back home in time for the holiday!” Within days, Gwen and Frank had gutted their house and disposed of all water damaged furniture and appliances. Then they set about rewiring electrical systems, fixing the plumbing and shortly thereafter, they began the process of studding out, and insulating, and sheet rocking new walls. It was truly amazing to watch as this family was busy bringing new construction materials into their house while the rest of us were still overwhelmed as we attempted to empty our homes of water damaged debris! If you happened to be on West 12th Road on the evening of December 24th, 2012 as I was, less than 2 months after Sandy, you would have been witness to a true “Broad Channel Christmas Miracle.” The O’Toole house was the only finished residence on the street, newly furnished and brightly lit with a big Christmas tree with all the trimmings visible through the window. If you listened closely, you could hear the soft sounds of holiday music coming from with-

in. The O’Toole family was, indeed, home for the holidays. It took 790 days but the Sandy displaced Galimi family of Broad Channel is finally home! John and Jayme Galimi and their children recently moved into their new elevated home on Cross Bay Boulevard, courtesy of the N.Y.C. Build it Back program. On the other hand, the vacant dirt lot on W12th Road where the home of Lenny and Sophia DeVirgilio once stood, serves as a stark reminder to all of us that there still are many Broad Channel residents who remain displaced as a result of Sandy’s storm surge as they continue to await assistance from the Build it Back program. Broad Channel’s VFW PrinceWynn Post 260 hosted a “Hair of the Dog” party on New Year’s Day which was not only well attended but was a down right hoot! In addition to tending bar, serving up Bloody Marys that were out of this world, “Chef” Bob Prokopowicz was also busy in the kitchen setting out hors d’oeuvres and hot food. Who knows? The “Hair of the Dog” New Year’s Day party may become an annual event for our town! Residents of West 11th, 12th and 13th Roads should pay particular attention to the “No Parking” signs posted on one side of their respective blocks. Even if there is no actual construction work taking place on the street, the signs are still in force and Traffic has ticketed some cars for parking on the restricted side during the restricted hours Monday through Friday. By the way, the price of home heating fuel is still dropping. I recently arranged for a 200 gallon delivery via codfuel.com with a per gallon price of $2.29! Paid Internships for Student Leaders Bank of America will offer a select group of community-minded NYC high school students the opportunity to work a paid internship with a local nonprofit, such as the YMCA and Food Bank for New York City, as part of its Student Leaders program. According to BofA, Student Leaders travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in a national Student Leadership Summit in July, where they participate in a service learning project and a series of interactive leadership development workshops meant to

give them a deeper understanding of how service creates positive change and how corporate, nonprofit and government collaboration revitalize communities. The opportunity has been a catalyst for many New York youth to continue on a path of community service into adulthood. Build it Back Beats Goals By Katie McFadden

According to the City, the Build it Back program exceeded Mayor de Blasio’s goals for 2014. In October 2014, the mayor announced his goals for Build it Back to start construction on 1,000 homes and to send out 1,500 reimbursement checks by December 31, 2014. The City says the program began construction on 1,002 homes and has sent out 2,104 reimbursement checks as of December 31. At the beginning of 2014, Build it Back seemed to give residents nothing but headaches. No money had been sent out and construction hadn’t begun on any homes. In April 2014, de Blasio announced an overhaul of the program and with its improvements; de Blasio set a new goal for the end of the year in October. “When we took office, Build it Back simply wasn’t working. Now, families across the city have started construction or received reimbursement. We’re commit-

ted to 1,000 construction starts and 1,500 reimbursement checks by December 31st, while dramatically expanding our design and construction capacity. We know there’s much work ahead, and Build it Back will continue to expedite relief until every homeowner is served,” the Mayor said in his October announcement. There are about 14,000 active applicants in the program. In addition to the 1,002 construction starts and the 2,104 checks totaling $36.5 million, Build it Back has fully repaired 309 homes. In December, the City announced the Community Development Block Grants Action Plan Amendment which includes allocating $200 million to Build it Back to go toward temporary rental assistance, direct repair grants, workforce developments and more. After holding public comment meetings across the five boroughs, the City will submit its plan for what to do with additional monies of CDGB funding from HUD on January 19.

healthy January in Rockaway Many of us who live here are drawn to the summer months when the sunshine is abundant, the ocean cooling and the days long and warm. We shudder and shiver through winter with an eye to the future of the sunshine and mild weather. Our shoulders roll forward and we look down! If this sounds familiar, read on. Part of it is that even though we experience the amazing miracle of the seasons changing, we long for what we feel comfortable with and like. Part of it is that we may have low energy – not moving as much – from being indoors more. Part of it is lack of sunshine. There are many studies (you can find on the internet) that point to the benefits of

obtaining vitamin D from the sun. Whatever it is, winter is here. What do we do about it? One thing to do is move. A simple movement: stand with feet hip width apart. Inhale, the arms up overhead, palms together for a second, exhale, bend the knees a tiny bit and fold forward, hands reaching towards the floor. Inhale, reach the hands back up, reaching for the sky palms together and reach back just a little bit. Awaken the energy in the spine by reaching up, folding forward and extending up and back just a little. Make it a flowing movement with no exertion and no tension – just flow. Repeat. And enjoy. I, for one, lived unhappily through winter for years! And if

you ask for my preference, I will not hesitate to tell you “warm weather.” Many times my friends would urge me to buy the “happy light” for winter. But, I don’t feel as low in past years and I attribute it to “mindfulness” obtained through the practice of yoga. Slowing down the mind chatter, allowing the heart to feel ok. Desiring to spiral upward instead of downward. The practice of yoga is not just going to a class and doing the poses. Yoga is a mindset that is obtained through practice of breathing, doing poses and calming the mind and the heart. And it stays with you, no matter what. The message here is, however we can slow down, calm the mind,

awaken the energy of the body, open the heart, and joy in the process – that is something that transcends any season or lack of sunshine or anything else. So, yoga may be your thing, or something else, but be mindful and turn your heart around to roll your shoulders back, look at the most beautiful winter sky sunsets and the rushing power of the winter ocean. We live in a most special place. Go outside. Take a deep breath in, be thankful for all that you have, remember that you are not alone and reach toward the winter sun for every bit of the energy that gives life and power. Question/comment? Kevin Kearney Remembered By Joe Keenan

On January 3, 2015, Kevin Kearney passed away after a two year battle with cancer. Kevin was one of the good guys. Throughout his courageous battle with cancer, Kevin never complained of his illness. He remained optimistic and complimentary of the medical care which he received especially from Dr. O’Reilly and the other physicians and nurses at Sloan Kettering. His wake gave a small glimpse of the person he was. Lifelong friends of Kevin were in abundance. His track buddies from his years at Nazareth High School and Manhattan College were there. His partners from Wingate Kearney and Cullen were present, as well as numerous contacts from the many charitable and civic organizations in which he was actively involved. Kevin was not a passive participant in any activity in which he became involved. Kevin was counsel for the Diocese of Brooklyn for 37 years. He was a board member of Concern Worldwide and traveled on behalf of Concern to areas in need, including Africa. He was also a board member of Mutual of America,

a member of the National Association of Diocesan Attorneys, a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, a past President of the Emerald Association of Long Island, a member of the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Club and Futures in Education. Most importantly, Kevin was a member of the Rockaway Gliders and the Manhattan College Spiked Shoe Club. Running was a passion in Kevin’s life. Kevin and his pal John Edwards spent many mornings running on the Boardwalk, often running down to the flag pole at Beach 9th Street. Their pace may have slowed over the years, but the energy and conversation never waned. John has said, “Even though Kevin ran in high school and college we never did a track workout. You see we loved to run but it was really just a vehicle, an enabler for us. You see what we really loved to do was talk. Our runs were really moving bull sessions.” Kevin will be missed but never forgotten. He is survived by his wife Mary Beth, daughter Christine, son in law Peter, daughter Elisa, son in law John, son Sean, brothers John and James and granddaughter Marion.

Neponsit: A Historic Community

Beach Access: 127th-149th By Hank Iori and Barbara Larkin

On December 30, the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association, along with Amanda Agolia, President of the Neponsit Property Owners Association, met with city officials at the beach wall on Beach 131st Street. The purpose of this meeting was to confirm the details of the reconstruction of the entry to the beach access from Beaches 127th to 149th Street. This section of city beach is not included in the newly reconstructed boardwalk. In attendance was Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder, Councilman Eric Ulrich, representatives from the Mayor’s Office, Polly Trottenberg, Commissioner of Department of

Transportation, Dalila Hall, Commissioner of Queens DOT, Dino Y.P Ng and Mohsen Zargarelahi from the Department of Design and Construction. Discussions focused on issues that required further study by DOT & DDC. The site inspection allowed those in attendance to better understand the design proposed by the two communities. The design features proposed focused in on safety, ease of access to the beach and an aesthetically pleasing look that best reflects our community. The representatives from the various city agencies appeared receptive to the measures presented and shared a willingness to collaborate with the communities.

The items falling under the DOT/DDC’s jurisdiction and approved for the reconstruction are as follows: The width of the sidewalk along the baffle wall is to be a minimum of 8 feet; The placement of sidewalk cut outs along the baffle wall for planting; The use of Bollards for safety; The placement of ADA compliant ramps for access to the sidewalk and beach entry points; A curb radius of 12” will be used to create a rounded sidewalk effect where the sidewalk by the beach wall meets both sides of the street sidewalk; Two inch PVC piping is to be placed approximately one foot below the planting cutouts to assist in watering the planting area by the baffle wall. The items falling under the Department of Parks and Recreation that need to be resolved are as follows: The rectangular walking

area within the baffle wall requires concreting; Greenstreet Project should furnish plantings for the area by the baffle wall; Bicycle racks installed on the baffle wall’s beach side; Lighting, similar to park lights used on Beach 20th Street, should be placed by the baffle entry area for security; Flag poles should be erected on each block on the beach side of the baffle wall. The project is scheduled to begin this spring. Discussions are ongoing with the Department of Parks and Recreation. It is hoped that they will be finalized soon. It is logical and cost efficient that the Parks Department moves on a timely basis to join forces with DOT/DDC and the Belle Harbor and Neponsit communities in addressing the items requested so all work can be completed within the current DOT/DDC timeframe.

Suite News Boutique Hotel In The Works By Kevin Boyle

Looking to turn coal into a diamond, a development team, with a decidedly local influence, announced plans to transform a dilapidated building on Beach 109th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard into a 4 story, 33 unit boutique hotel. The Rockaway Beach Hotel, as it’s to be called, will also boast a restaurant, catering space, and swimming pool and include parking for 26 cars. The developers who include long time residents Terence and Dan (Dee) Tubridy, operators of the Bungalow Bar on Beach 92nd and several other establishments including the Park Avenue Tavern and the Refinery Hotel, addressed the Land Use Committee of the Community Board Tuesday night as a matter of introduction and outreach. The Tubridys, part of the In Good Company Hospitality group, are partnering with JBS Project Management to turn a currently vacant property and adjacent parking lot into a hotel they say will provide “the local community and beyond with an easy going, beach getaway.” This will be quite a change

for the property, still owned by another member of the Tubridys, which has fallen into disrepair after years as a restaurant and rooming house. Ben Igoe, of JBS, made the presentation indicating the team is seeking a zoning change for the entire block and is trying to gain community support before meeting with City Planning, which they are hoping to do within the next four weeks. Before meeting the Land Use Committee, Igoe and others met with Noreen Ellis of the Rockaway Civic Association to address possible concerns. Members of the Land Use Committee asked Igoe about parking and the new flood plain rules; about noise, about pricing; about seasonal challenges, about catering and meeting spaces; about where entrances would be and even if they thought a hotel now under construction on Beach 44th Street would be negatively affected. In short, Igoe said parking was reviewed by architects and should meet approval. Noise to an extent would be “self-regulating” because people staying at the hotel would insist on reasonable noise levels. Dee Tubridy added that sound and

“not being annoying to neighbors” is one of the main goals of all his businesses. Tubridy also said they have done business modeling to account for winter months when occupancy can be expected to be low. He said his experience at the Bungalow Bar gives him full appreciation for the off-season. Still, he added, there is no real off-season for family functions such as weddings and christenings and their catering space will be a good option and help in the lean months. Igoe speculated that rooms will fetch upwards of $300 in the summer and somewhere between $100 and $150 in the dead of winter. As for hurting another location, the team said the opposite is likely to happen. It’s “more the merrier” as far as restaurants and hotels. They said their goal is to make Rockaway a more attractive destination for tourists and that it’s their hope that the Rockaway Beach Hotel will inspire others to follow. In fact, the hotel and bar will be following other establishments nearby: Healy’s and Dalton’s Seaside Grill. What do the folks at Dalton’s say? “Comhghairdeas! (Congratulations in Gaelic). We’re

thrilled about the proposed hotel project and the benefits it can bring for our community and residents.” (Mike and Chris Dalton) So, when will you be able to send your visiting relatives there instead of offering them the pullout couch? When will you able to go poolside or sip a piña colada at the bar? Igoe said with community support and if City Planning signs off and all permits and plans get approved, groundbreaking could begin within 12-16 months. Construction would likely take a similar amount of time. Your room should be ready in three years. Or around the same time the City finishes the boardwalk.

Starting off the New Year with a low calorie delish dish. This makes a great appetizer or a main dish. Ingredients: 1-1/2 pounds lean ground turkey ½ cup shredded carrots 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger, minced 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 can (8 ounces) whole water chestnuts, drained and chopped 4 scallions ½ cup chopped fresh snow peas (fresh peas) 1/3 cup teriyaki sauce ¼ cup hoisin sauce 3 tablespoons creamy peanut

butter 1 tablespoon rice vinegar 1 tablespoon sesame oil 12 Bibb lettuce leaves (use whatever lettuce you prefer) ++Additional hoisin sauce, optional Directions: In a large skillet, cook turkey and carrot over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and carrot is tender; drain. Add ginger and garlic, cook one minute longer. Stir in the chestnuts, onions, snow peas, teriyaki, hoisin sauce, peanut butter, vinegar and oil. Heat through. Plate the lettuce leaves and spoon the turkey mixture into them. Drizzle additional hoisin sauce if desired. Fold lettuce over the filing.
