A Fight to Keep Restaurants Alive

Remembering Richie Connor Our thoughts and hearts are with the friends and family of Richie Connor, who died on Thursday, September 24. He was 51. Richie was the unofficial Mayor of 116th Street, always spotted riding his trike around the block, a special athlete with St. Camillus Special Olympics and a fan of the Rockaway Times. He will truly be missed. A memorial was held in front of his home on Sunday, followed by a wake on Monday, September 28. The family asks that donations be made to St. Camillus Special Olympics in his memory.

The Rockaway Times

On Monday, September 28, some local businesses closed their doors for a fight to stay open. Those from Bungalow Bar, The Rockaway Hotel, The Wharf and Harbor Light joined hundreds of others in the New York City bar/restaurant industry for a march to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Manhattan office to demand that Cuomo pass the Restaurant Act and allow NYC restaurants to open for at least 50% indoor dining capacity, like the rest of the state. To make a statement, some of the Tubridys brought along a coffin, something last seen

at a funeral for the beach after a large stretch of beaches were closed in Rockaway Beach due to erosion— another decision that caused local businesses to take a hit in 2018. This time around, the coffin read, “Here Lies NYC Hospitality. Died 2020. Cause of Death—Complications of Cuomo and de Blasio. 1624-2020.” This protest comes just ahead of NYC bars/restaurants being allowed to open with 25% capacity and other restrictions in place. Those behind the march say this isn’t enough, especially with other parts of New York allowing 50% capacity since the end of June.

Locals And Candidate Do Cleanup

On Sunday, September 27, 18 volunteers participated in a coastal cleanup in honor of International Coastal Cleanup Month and the end of Climate Week 2020. The event was sponsored by local grassroots group Rockaway Revolution and NYC Council Candidate for District 32, Felicia Singh. The volunteers began at Beach 120th Street and made their way down to Beach 95th Street, filling 20 large trash bags with debris. "It’s wonderful to see how

many Rockaway residents came out to keep our beach beautiful,” Singh said. “It’s our civic duty to make sure our community is resilient and we can all participate, whether it’s by doing a coastal clean-up, advocating for storm protection, or teaching our students how to compost and manage hydroponic gardens.” Singh also noted that an integrated and sustainable plan is needed to ensure the Rockaways are resilient for years to come: “Tide gates, sea walls, pumping, and raising streets are not separate solutions. We need multifaceted plans that are created in partnership with community members, local organizations, and elected officials so these structural changes adequately meet the challenges we face.”

Following Local Coronavirus Uptick, Officials Encourage Getting Tested By Katie McFadden

After a recent uptick in coronavirus cases in Far Rockaway, local elected officials came together for a press conference on Tuesday, September 29, to highlight some of Rockaway’s free testing sites that are available and encouraged all to take advantage of them. Additionally, it was announced that starting Wednesday, September 30, Rockaway’s Beach 39th testing site will offer rapid testing, providing results as quickly as 15 minutes. In recent days, Far Rockaway has been highlighted as one of nine zip codes across New York City to see an increase in coronavirus cases. As of Tuesday, Far Rockaway’s 11691 zip code had reached a 3.98% positivity rate, showing an increase from the citywide average below one percent in recent weeks. As kids head back to school and more

businesses open, the increase is cause for alarm, so officials are doing what they can to keep numbers away from the levels seen back in the spring. One way to do so is to step up testing and trace cases, so on Tuesday, September 29, local elected leaders including Councilman Donovan Richards and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato held a press conference at the

Beach 39th testing site to highlight that site and others. “There are three testing sites in the Rockaway community,” Richards said. “There’s always this notion and this rumor in the Rockaways that we don’t get anything and the city leaves us behind. It was a fight, but it is here, we have testing. Take advantage. We have Beach 39th Street, Sorrentino Center and

as of yesterday, Rise Rockaway site, where you can go and get tested for free.” “I can’t tell you how many constituents who have reached out and said they were charged by their urgent care. This is a free testing site,” Pheffer Amato said at the Beach 39th site. “It is clean, professional, top of the line and everyone should be coming here. We want to add testing into our everyday lives. Your kids are going to school, you’re hearing rumors maybe some kids are infected. Take you and your kids after school and get tested. What is the crime? Nothing, you get a negative, you go back, if it’s positive, then we know what to deal with and we’re letting everyone else know. There seems to be this lack of being responsible like we were before. The restaurants are open, gyms are open, some kids are going back to their activities. Continued on page 9

***** Reservations recommended. It’s rainy? It’s chilly? No worries.Indoor dining started yesterday with 25% capacity. Please see restaurant options starting on Page 34 and on the back page. Here’s to hoping the 25% is just for the month of October with a minimum of 50% by November 1. ***** The restaurant cap is certainly tied to the city’s overall positivity rate. A new lockdown will be put in place if the positivity rate jumps over 3%. Schools will close and other businesses will likely face the same. Positivity rates are climbing in neighborhoods with large Orthodox Jewish populations and it’s feared the increase will spread to other areas. The City Health department says there is “no

evidence of herd immunity for any community.” ***** Rockaway Hoops is a podcast that we’ve been hyping, for good reason. The show gets better every week and this week they’ve got a true legend as a guest. Nancy Lieberman, who fashioned a Hall of Fame career which began in Far Rockaway, joined the guys on a Zoom call and the show will air on Facebook this Sunday, October 4. Basketball has been a huge part of Rockaway history and culture and Rockaway Hoops taps into it beautifully. ***** Rockaway Has Choices. Bar Marseilles is the newest place in town. The great looking spot at Arverne by the Sea opens today (Thursday). It has indoor dining and an outdoor patio (each 75 seats), and a rooftop area with an additional 50 seats. The fare is French, bistro-inspired with strong coastal influences that focus on seafood. ***** The Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC),

The Rockaway Times

the non-profit which has sponsored art shows, the Rockaway Times Photo Contest, beach and bay clean-ups, and champions a climate resilient New York is now our next-door neighbor at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive. ***** People along the Shore Front buildings have told us that voter mail absentee ballots have been left in lobbies or have wrong addresses. In the best of times, the Board of Elections (everywhere it seems!) has trouble, and often the Post Office. Seniors and the disabled, in particular, need the option to vote by mail. ***** Speaking of elections, you can expect a Special Election to be scheduled once City Councilman Donovan Richards is declared winner of the race for Queens Borough President on November 3, barring a major upset at the hands of Republican candidate Joann Ariola. ***** Manuel Silva, Richards’s Chief of Staff, is expected to vie for the job as are others. Richards actually took the seat in a Special

Election after James Sanders Jr. won a seat in the NY State Senate, narrowly edging out Pesach Osina. We asked Pesach about trying again and he told us, “I’ll keep you in the loop.” ***** Even though the 3 on 3 By The Sea tourney in memory of the great, Clare Droesch, was limited by Covid restrictions, the turnout and generosity of many wasn’t limited. This year, The Clare Droesch Scholarship was awarded to Lauren Brenna and Danielle Tansey. ***** Kudos to the coffin carriers. When New York City tried to kill the beach season in 2018 and closed stretches of beach with little notice to boardwalk businesses, some locals staged a mock funeral and carried a coffin followed by a bagpiper. The coffin reemerged this past week in Manhattan as locals protested the leadership of the Mayor and Governor. The 25% capacity restriction (while the rest of the state has 50%) is something that will kill the restaurant business, they say.

FOLLOWING LOCAL CORONAVIRUS UPTICK Continued from Page 6 If we don’t get tested, that’s all going to go in reverse. We can enjoy a restaurant if we are all being responsible. The name of the game is the health and safety of our community. I don’t want another life lost to Covid-19, especially in my community, but the whole city and state. Following Richards and Pheffer Amato, Dr. Ted Long Executive Director of New York Health and Hospitals’ Test & Trace Corps spoke about the seriousness of the local uptick. “In the Rockaways, how serious is this? This is very serious. There has been a three-fold increase in the number of new cases every day compared to before. We need to take this seriously and we need to work together, Dr. Long said. To do this, Dr. Long also encouraged the community to get tested. “It’s not too late for us to control the coronavirus in this community. In New York City, they’re doing testing and

contact tracing where you figure out if somebody is exposed to the coronavirus and you get them quarantined so they don’t potentially infect other people. We’ve been able to drive down the rate of new cases in NYC by two-thirds since we started doing this in June. We can do the same thing here in the Rockaways if we do it together. All I need from you is to have our community here come in to get tested at this beautiful new site, and then pick up the phone if you’ve tested positive, to talk to us. Tell us who you may have exposed, and we’ll talk to them and figure out how we can deliver free food to them or get them a free hotel stay. We’ll do everything in our power to help you. He also encouraged people to continue to wear masks. “It’s been a cornerstone of what’s made us successful, making NYC one of the best control rate cities in the whole country in terms of big cities. We’re distributing now, in all the communities where we’re seeing an uptick, more than 300,000 masks

and including more than 300 synagogues, we’re going in and giving masks to hand out to the communities there. At the end, Dr. Long announced that rapid testing will now be available at the Beach 39th testing location. “Right here, we’re bringing in this week, new rapid testing machines where you can come in, get your test and have your result back within 15 minutes. We wanted to do this to help the community here, so go, tell everybody to come get tested. We have a tremendous amount of capacity. That’s the way we’re going to get out of this, as a city, as a community. To ease fears about testing and encourage others to take advantage of Rockaway’s free testing sites, at the end of the press

Page 9 conference, both Richards and Pheffer Amato got tested themselves. “If you have not heard, the mayor has spoken of nine zip codes where we’re seeing these upticks and how we can see restrictions placed on these communities and see more of an aggressive lockdown in the Rockaways if we do not take this seriously, Richards said. “We may not be at the worst place that we saw before, but we don’t need to go back and revisit where we were just a few months ago where we saw hundreds of people testing positive and where we saw lives lost. Let’s do this together. We have to take this seriously, but we can only do this by all being team players at this moment. Rockaway’s free testing sites include Beach 39th (39-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd), open daily, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sorrentino Recreation Center (18-48 Cornaga Ave, open daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and RISE (Between Beach 59th and 60th) will temporarily offer testing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October 2.

Zion’s Mission Aims to Give Animals Hope

By Katie McFadden

Zion’s Mission, a local nonprofit animal rescue organization, began as a tribute to an inspirational rescue dog. Sloane Quealy-Miner discovered Zion and her puppies neglected in a yard in Far Rockaway on a cold day in January 2012. Quealy-Miner, who has been involved in animal rescue for at least 12 years, was able to convince the owner to surrender all but two of the dogs— Zion and her puppy, Nya. But she continued to care for them, providing food, water, exercise, shelter and love. In November 2016, Zion tore her ACL, and the owner finally agreed to let

Quealy-Miner take the dogs, so Zion could receive proper treatment. It was during that following vet visit that it was discovered Zion had more than just a torn ACL—she had breast cancer. The owner tried to reclaim the dogs, but Quealy-Miner took it to court, and won full custody. It was then discovered that Zion also had stage 3 T-cell lymphoma, an extremely aggressive cancer. Due to the dedication of Quealy-Miner and her husband, Matt Miner, Zion’s story didn’t end in a cold yard in Far Rockaway. With the help of chemotherapy and endless love, Zion lived until August 2019. Shortly after, Quealy-Miner decided to continue her mission of giving dogs hope of a brighter future, dignity and respect, in Zion’s name. In October 2019, she launched Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue. “I wanted to start a rescue in her honor because I wasn’t sure I could continue rescuing if it wasn’t for her, Quealy-Miner said. “I had

Poseidon Persists Story and Photos By Katie McFadden

Coronavirus may have officially canceled parades this year, but since when was Ariel one to follow rules? It may not have been the usual seafaring shindig that has drawn big crowds to the boardwalk at the end of the summer since 2015, but Poseidon’s Parade swam on. On Saturday, September 26, a small group of costumed mermaids, octopuses and even Forrest Gump, led by mermaid queen Casey Butler, partook in a socially-distanced stroll down the boardwalk from Beach 106th to Beach 95th Street. Bobby Butler and Jenna Baker of Indaculture kept spirits high as they played and sang

aboard a mobile Whalemina, which followed along Shore Front Parkway. At around Beach 96th, all convened to dance and sing the afternoon away. Best costume went to Richie Knott for his Forrest Gump getup and enthusiasm to run, or rather, jog along the parade route. Although smaller than usual, Saturday’s parade kept the Poseidon spirit alive in anticipation of returning to normal next year. “We’ll see you all next year when we resume our usual fun and games,” The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, which organizes the annual event, posted to the Poseidon’s Parade Facebook page. “Until then, we’re making the best of it just like everyone else.”

nogan said. Beechwood, the group that developed Arverne by the Sea, presented them with an opportunity to do something with its restaurant space that offers rooftop views at its newest development, The Tides. “We’ve had a good relationship with Beechwood, and we were excited to do a project with them. The location was attractive to us because it’s near the ocean. It has a lot of potential with the mix of natural beauty with the ocean and that industrial part where you’re sitting on the terrace and you can see the A train go by, but you’re still near the beach. It’s a unique environment and it reminded of us the French city of Marseille, which has a lot of different cultures as well and we found a parallel between there and Arverne.” The chef even enjoyed the area so much, that he moved right above the restaurant. Being so close to the ocean, having a mostly seafood-based menu felt like the right fit, especially in a neighborhood that specifically lacks a seafood restaurant. However, Bar Marseille offers a little bit for everyone, so all can come together to enjoy the experience, no matter their preferences. Guests can also have a choice of where to enjoy their meal or drinks. The space boasts a rooftop space that can seat up to 50 people on low and high tables and even on beanbag chairs in lounge areas, plus an indoor space on the first floor with a large bar as the central feature and outdoor patio space, both with 75 seats, so people have plenty of options for indoor or outdoor dining. While coronavirus pushed back opening plans, Bar Marseille officially opened on Thursday, October 1, just in time for indoor dining to re-

turn to New York City. “It feels great to finally be open. We’re excited to bring something new to the area and between messages on Instagram and people walking up and asking when we’re opening, I feel that this is a really sorely needed restaurant for the area, so I’m hoping that we can become part of the fabric of the community soon,” Monagan said. As the new place navigates ever-changing coronavirus restrictions, Bar Marseille will change as well. Taking advantage of the outdoor rooftop space, as the weather grows colder, the partners are planning to add heaters, plexiglass and covers to address rain and wind. However, there are plans to add a bar to the rooftop at a later time when more indoor dining is permitted. They also hope to offer live music in the

future. Reservations are encouraged and delivery/pickup will be available for those looking to enjoy food at home. To meet demand, Bar Marseille will be hiring locally. Bar Marseille is open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, brunch service is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with bar snacks and drinks available from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Happy Hour is available from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Reservations are accepted through OpenTable and walk-ins are welcome. Delivery is available via GrubHub and UberEats within 15 miles. ZION’S MISSION AIMS Continued from Page 12 ing to surrender their animal. For animals that are up for adoption, they’ll work to rehabilitate and train them before they are given to a potential adoptee to foster until the match proves to be a good fit for full adoption. However, they also work with owners who may have fallen on hard times and don’t have the financial means to support an animal. “Our goal is not to take anybody’s dog away from them due to a lack of money,” she said. “As long as they’re a responsible owner and they’re providing everything else for the dog in a safe and happy home, we try to assist them with programs, supplies or if the animal needs medical care.” To do all of this, the organization heavily depends on volunteers and donations to provide a good life for the animal. Zion’s Mission rescues and rehomes dogs, cats and even guinea pigs, but large dogs are their main focus, including sick and older dogs that may be harder to

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2020 find homes for. “We help mostly large dogs but also have soft spot for senior dogs and dogs who are terminally ill. A lot of our dogs are hospice cases, so we find fosters and we provide for all of their medical care,” Quealy-Miner said. In addition to Zion and Nya, who was also diagnosed with cancer, Zion’s Mission has helped countless animals in need of medical assistance. One young pitbull, Mack, was rescued from people who were breeding dogs in the Redfern Housing Projects. “He’s in kidney failure and had autoimmune issues his whole life. It seems these dogs have a genetic issue due to irresponsible breeding,” Quealy-Miner said. Another dog they rescued from the same breeders rang up $16,000 in vet bills and unfortunately died. “He would have died a horrible death had he not been taken out of that situation,” she said. Unfortunately, after a recent animal hospital visit, it was determined that only so much can be done to help Mack. His foster family is

now keeping him as comfortable as possible on hospice care. “I shudder to think about the other dogs this guy is breeding. They’re just bought and sold and not thought of as respected, sentient beings as I think of them. Those situations where we’re able to help dogs like that and try to give them the care they need make me happy that we’re doing what we do,” Quealy-Miner said. Through Zion’s Mission, Quealy-Miner hopes to expand and help as many animals as possible. “Ultimately, we would love to have a physical location to help our animals, but our goal is to do what we’re doing and help as many animals as we can,” she said. She also does this by sharing the importance of animal rescue and educating people about animals. Working at a school, Quealy-Miner says she often brings rescue dogs to her school for assemblies to help change the stigma surrounding large dogs such as pitbulls and to teach kids about what Zion’s Mission does. The lessons have

Page 15 already made an impact. “After one assembly, a student came up to me and said there’s a dog in her area that’s not being taken care of. She drew a picture of the dog and the home where it was, so I went, and the person accepted our help. The girl was so happy, I made her a certificate to award her for what she did. You never know when you’re talking to somebody, who you’re going to reach or help, especially with young people. They’re getting in that mindset of treating animals with respect. I would have never thought a student would come up to me and say there was a dog they wanted to help. Things like that or helping a dog find an amazing home fills your tank and helps you continue through some of the other heartbreaks in rescue.” To help continue Zion’s Mission, whether it’s by signing up to be a volunteer, adopting a rescue animal or making a donation to help cover some of the rescue, training and medical costs, head to www.zionsmission.org

RISE’s 2020 International Coastal Cleanup one at RISE would like to thank all of the volunteers who were able to participate in this year's International Coastal Cleanup. It certainly will be one to remember. This event is sponsored by NY State Dept of Environmental Conservation and NACTO and is part of the "Wellness Way" Initiative in partnership with NYC Dept of Transportation. Liam Lachner Is the Community Outreach Coordinator and NYC Civic Corps Member.

By Liam Lachner

On Saturday, September 19, the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) hosted its annual International Coastal Cleanup in partnership with the American Littoral Society from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The purpose of this event is to help raise awareness on the escalating amount of trash in the ocean. The Ocean Conservancy works to establish legislation that aims to reduce the amount of trash along our shores. RISE and other organizations across the world host this event to help them reach their goal, through encouraging people to go out and record all of the trash that they collect. Unfortunately, due to health and safety risks, participants were not able to record their individual findings this year. A total of 46 people came out to participate in the event. Participants consisted of many returning volunteers, as well as some new community members and

people from out of town. Due to social distancing, most of our participants have been stuck at home. There have not been many opportunities to volunteer this year, making this a great chance to get outdoors before the season ends. The people who were able to make it were very excited that RISE was still hosting the event this year. At the end of the event, all volunteers were given their very own blueberry bush as a reward for their efforts. Every-

Student Privacy in the Time of COVID By Gille Ann Rabbin, Esq., CIPP/US, CIPP/E

“Back-to-school” this year has been anything but normal, including for our children’s privacy. Parents, guardians, and students should understand their privacy rights and privacy issues presented by the “new normal.” The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”) is a federal law that protects the privacy of educational records. Under FERPA, which applies to most schools, parents or eligible students have the right to inspect a student’s educational record, request that the school correct an inaccurate or misleading record, and opt out of “directory” information. FERPA also generally requires that schools have written permission to release information from a student’s educational record. (State and other federal laws may provide additional access and disclosure protections.) During COVID, FERPA still applies, but its exception allow-

ing nonconsensual disclosure in cases of health and safety emergencies has taken on new meaning. In March, the U.S. Department of Education released FERPA guidance to help schools protect student privacy and public health. Basically, schools are allowed to provide information to parents as long as they don’t identify specific students. Many schools are using contact tracing apps, hardware, and applications like automatic temperature readers and facial recognition to monitor COVID. While these can protect public health, they can also track locations and contacts, and retain and use collected data for other purposes, including sale to data brokers for commercial purposes. Accordingly, parents, guardians, and students should review privacy practices before allowing their children’s data to be exposed for a different purpose than expected. Millions of schools are also using “ed tech” —online educational services—for remote

learning. Examples include services to access class readings, view learning progression, watch videos, comment on class activities, and complete homework. Many ed tech services collect and use students’ personal information. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) provides some protections if personal data is collected for commercial purposes from children under 13. Covered websites must provide notice of their information collection and use practices and obtain parental consent. However, if a commercial ed tech site collects data from children 13 and over, these protections don’t apply. Further, if students’ info is used for a noncommercial educational purpose, schools can consent to the collection of student personal info without parental consent. Parents, guardians, and students should be aware of their school’s ed tech privacy practices. As with contact tracing apps and other digital measures to

protect public health, find out what measures are available to protect the security and confidentiality of the info collected, what collected data will be used for, why and how long it will be retained, and whether it will be sold for commercial purposes. If you have questions or these practices don’t seem acceptable, speak with the school. Also as part of remote learning, some schools are recording classes and student-teacher interactions. If your child’s school is doing this, insist on seeing a written policy detailing what is being recorded and why, whether prior consent is required, who can view recordings, how long they will be available, and whether opting out is possible without compromising your child’s education. Ask questions if the policy is unclear or unacceptable. Despite the pandemic, recording should not be a quid pro quo for your child’s education, and schools should not be allowed to turn into surveillance states.

The Power of Intention I have been thinking about the power of intention lately and just by chance I picked up a deck of inspirational cards and the card I picked was the author relaying something he read about the effect of group meditation on crime. After some googling, I found it. “Washington meditation project reverses violent crime trend by 23.3%.” (worldpeace.org). In the summer of 1993, during an almost two-month period, through the power of group meditation, there was a remarkable effect on the city. They in-

vestigated if there were any other variables, and found none. Crime was reduced. I was amazed and not surprised. What a magnificent example of coming together, positivity, peacefulness and collective energy consciousness. It was an extremely concentrated effort on the part of all of those individuals during that time. Their lives stopped - they concentrated their energies on positively reducing violence in the area embraced by the breadth of the group. The result is astounding.

What can we take from this occurrence? We have lives to live, people to see, work to do, meals to cook, nurturing to do, bedtime stories to read, lunches to pack, flights to catch, shopping to do, support to give, and on and on. How do we stop on a daily basis to project intentions to better our community, our families, our circle, ourselves? I know that when we internalize a hope, a feeling, an intention over and over again, it manifests. Maybe not in the timeframe that we want, or in the exact way we want, but the shift happens. The positive intention causes shift and change. What would you like to shift in your life? What do you want to change? It took the power of a multitude of people to make a multitude of change in Washington DC; it will take the power of you to make a single change in you. It will take the power of you to make a positive change in your circle. It will take the power of you to make a positive change in your family. It will take the power of you to make a positive

The Rockaway Times change in your community. The energy of positive change follows the positive intention. It is as simple as that. Positive intentions help us to find the answers to things. If we are dealing with an illness or a heart wrenching problem or an emotional upset, conjuring up positive language, repeating it inside or out loud eventually changes the perspective causing us to see the issue in a different way, possibly moving away from it or finding an answer in a non-conventional place. The same is true for those around us. When we circle around and around in the negative thoughts and connotations, it only hinders us from understanding and living harmoniously. Harmony is ecstasy and bliss. Living with the intention to be in harmony with ourselves, inner circle, family and community will bring joy and peace. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace. (This is a reprint of a column from 2018).

May The Plasma Be With You I am old enough to remember watching the original Star Trek series in the ‘60s (on a black and white TV because that’s all we had). In one episode, Captain Kirk, Spock, and Dr. “Bones McCoy are stranded on a planet where they catch an infection that causes them to rapidly age. The planet is populated by children and teens who are immune and do not age. Dr. McCoy is able to formulate a serum from the blood of these children. The serum contains antibodies which cure the infection when the serum is given to the crew. Many of the gadgets and computers in the show resemble things we

use everyday today, for example smartphones. Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the show, was a sci-fi genius akin to Arthur C. Clark and Jules Verne. Today, Dr. McCoy’s serum is called convalescent plasma and it currently being used to treat people infected by COVID-19. Most people who recover from this virus develop antibodies (proteins that the immune system creates in response to infection) to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2). Antibodies are found in plasma, the yellow liquid portion of the blood. Plasma

is collected from donors who have recovered from COVID-19 through a process called apheresis, which uses a special machine to separate the blood into different components. The plasma is removed, while the rest of the blood components are returned into the donor’s body. Convalescent plasma has been used to treat other infections and shows promise in treating COVID-19. Research is being done to study the use of convalescent plasma to treat those with severe COVID-19 and also to prevent infection (prophylaxis) in certain highrisk patients exposed to the virus. The early results of these studies are promising and suggest that this treatment is helpful, but of course more, larger studies are needed. Plasma transfusions are generally safe and well tolerated by most patients. Side effects are rare but include mild allergic reactions. All donated blood, including plasma, is screened for blood type compatibility as well as infections

Page 25 like hepatitis B and C, HIV, and many other less common infections. SARS-CoV-2 is not spread by blood, and there is no risk of transmission from recovered donors. Currently, people who have recovered from COVID-19 who had a confirmed positive test can donate plasma after they have been symptom free for at least 14 days. People who have recovered from suspected COVID-19 but never had a confirmed positive test may donate plasma if tests show they have SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. If you want to donate plasma, contact the Red Cross or a local blood bank for more information. Finally, if you never watched the original Star Trek series or haven’t seen it in years, go watch some of the shows. It is amazing how prescient the show was, especially considering it debuted 54 years ago. THE NATURALIST’S CORNER Continued from Page 28 I had never seen this fish myself before, but we eventually learned that it was called a striped burrfish, or sometimes called a spiny boxfish (Chilomycterus schoepfii). That little guy grew to be one of the friendliest fish we ever had at the school, recognizing people and coming to the surface for a little affection. The striped burrfish does have the ability to ‘inflate’ when stressed, but are in a different family than other pufferfish in this area such as the Northern Puffer (Sphoeroides maculatus) The striped burrfish is a member of the porcupinefish family, owing to its fused front teeth and extremely sharp spines. Those strong, fused front teeth allow this fish to consume all sorts of hard-shelled creatures, including barnacles, shellfish, hermit crabs and more. It can also tolerate a wide range of salinities; from the salty ocean to brackish tidal steams. He enjoys the waves

of the ocean, but is more commonly found amongst seagrass beds. Thus, our burrfish thrives in our estuarine environment here in the Rockaways! This summer, many of us have had direct experience with the burrfish, as members of the community found several throughout the summer washed up in the wrack. I found one during a morning walk, about eight feet away from the height of the tide at the moment (so it had clearly been out of the water for quite some time), and it was still alive! Its very sharp, erect spines make

it unpleasant to handle, so I used a large clam to carry him beyond the crashing waves and away he swam. As I pondered why there seemed to be so many more washing up this year than in the past, I thought it was a great chance to “think like a scientist. All science starts with observations and questions, such as: “Why are more of these fish washing up on the beach? Next is the fun part: be creative, and posit as many explanations you can think of for your observation: Could the population of the burrfish in our area

be increasing? Or is a change in the feeding habits of the fish, or in the habitats of their prey, causing the fish to come closer to shore? Are they avoiding an offshore predator whose population has increased? Is there some pollutant causing a behavioral change? Your next step is to read, read, read! After a simple internet search to see if your question has already been answered, proceed to Google Scholar. There you will find the peer-reviewed work by researchers. (Note: if you have a friend making a dubious scientific claim, ALWAYS ask for the original peer-reviewed published paper as a source). There actually isn’t a heck of a lot of research specifically on our little friend‌ I’m looking at you, future marine scientists!! What is your hypothesis about this (maybe?) increased number of striped burrfish sightings? How would you conduct an experiment to test one of the potential reasons for their increased ‘beachings?’

On Saturday, September 26, Beach 146th Street held a spectacular event “146 Got Talent.” The show was produced by Gloria Gabriel, a music industry veteran and former Vice President of A&R at Atlantic Records. Within one week of rehearsals (including one dress rehearsal), the children learned how to use a microphone, work together, support one another, improve their performance and engage the audience. The day of the event, we had three judges who gave feedback after each performance and the spectators all got ballots to vote on who the Grand Prize winner would be. One mom whose son and daughter were in the talent show said, “What a beautiful week the kids have had. Something to look forward to every single day after a confusing school day. It’s more than a talent show, you worked with each of them… and look what happened with my Louis today. A shy little boy up there singing with total confidence! Thank you, thank you.” During this trying time of the pandemic, I believe that initiating the “146 Got Talent” show, was a way to take lemons and make lemonade. There are so many silver linings within this pandemic cloud we are currently under. We find ourselves doing things we might never do to help create great memories for all of us and especially for the children. As one grandmother

said, “This was one of the best afternoons I’ve had in a long time.” I asked a few of the children to share their thoughts about performing in the show: “I’m not nervous on stage because I pretend no one is there. I love country music, the country song I’m doing (Margarita) reminds me of the beach,” said one child. “I get to show my talent and have fun with my friends. YES, let’s do another talent show,” another said. “I get to sing my favorite song (Never Gonna Give You Up) I’m not nervous because I know everyone,” another child claimed. All of the kids received a medal and a certificate for their performance, as well as a gift certificate for one ice cream cone from Mr. Softee. There was one grand prize trophy that was won by Emma Minson who sang a “A Million Dreams.” Thank you, Gloria Gabriel for creating this wonderful event and working each day with all of the children giving them something to look forward to. When asked for a quote for this article Gloria said, “Working with young minds and honing in on their raw talent continues to surprise me. A beautiful experience, a vision of possibilities for creative expression in our future generations.” Gloria Gabriel’s credits include Grammy nominations and various awards for creative works. She worked with various artists such as Jewel, Barbra Streisand, Sean Paul, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, matchbox20 and more.

As we go to press, the 100th Precinct Community Council decided to cancel its National Night Out event scheduled for Tuesday, October 6 due to an uptick in coronavirus cases. "Even though we prepared for the event, we have decided that the health and safety of the 100th Precinct Community, the Precinct Personnel and our Board is more important. We hope to see everyone at National Night Out August 2021," President Kathy Heavey said. At this time, it is not clear if the 101st Precinct event is canceled. The 101st Precinct event is schedules to take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at O’Donohue Park on Beach 17th Street with a barbecue, games, a rock-climbing wall, boxing demos, resources, music and more.

Wrestle Talk QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS By Eric Jayden

On this edition of Wrestle Talk, we answer the questions sent to us by you, the fans! The first question comes from David L. in Rockaway Park and he said, "I grew up a big Hulk Hogan fan. Is there any possibility of him making a comeback?" Well David, in wrestling we have a saying, "Never Say Never," but in my opinion Hulk Hogan can make a comeback but in a very limited capacity. The years of wrestling has taken a toll on his body and I can only see him coming back in a manager or an authority figure role. The second question comes from Alison H, in Edgemere and she asked, "Who do you think has the better product the WWE or AEW?" Currently, I feel both products are failing to produce good content

with the exception of the NXT brand. So, since NXT is part of the WWE, you can say the WWE's NXT brand is delivering better content. The third question of the week comes from Lisa M. in Rockaway Beach and she asked, "How much do Pro

Wrestlers make?" Good question Lisa, a wrestler starting off in the independence scene can make $25 to $50 per match. Once he/she has created a name for themselves, they can make $50 to $100 a match, excluding merchandise sales. If the wrestler signs a contract

with a major wrestling promotion, they can make six figures salaries. But, as I have mentioned before, a majority of wrestlers are making six-figure salaries working independently throughout the world. The fourth question of the week comes from Harry K. in Broad Channel and he asked, "Is Wrestling fake?" Well, Harry this is the question I have answered many times. Professional wrestling is a tough business to be in. The bumps and bruises are real. It takes years of training and dedication to be successful and although the outcomes are predetermined, the physicality is very real. I want to thank everybody for sending in the questions. Please continue to send questions to eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Instagram @badguysexiness and on Twitter @followthebadguy
