RISE Rises to the Occasion for Sandy Anniversary Planting What better way to commem- cane Sandy by doing something a future storm? Dozens of volunteers reported to Beach 44th Street last Saturday, October 19 to join RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equality), formerly the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, and take place in an effort to clean up the dunes and help

make them stronger with various plantings to create a buffer against flooding. A large group of kids to adults came out to show their support and put in the work to help create a stronger peninsula ahead of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Thank you to the many volunteers and to RISE for holding this event around each anniversary of the storm.

Community Pleads With CEC to Show Support in Shelter Battle By Katie McFadden

The community is hoping that the District 27 Community Education Council gets on board with opposing the proposed shelter for Beach 101st Street and instead, consider advocating for the building to be used for educational purposes. At a District 27 CEC meeting at Scholars’ Academy on Monday, October 21, parents, students and other community members came out strong to plead their case for why the proposed shelter that will house 120 men, is not a good fit for a location just one block away from multiple schools that hold as many as 5,000 students. Many provided their reasons and some even suggested that the Department of Education consider the proposed shelter location as the site of a future school instead. “There’s no contract signed there with the Department of Home-

less Services (DHS) yet. We have requested that the Department of Ed look at that building. It would make us all very happy if you took this building on 101st Street and made it into a universal 3K and Pre-K,” Democratic District Leader Lew Simon said before the board. Even students from Scholars’ Academy came out to express their direct concerns with the shelter if it were to be approved.

“As a student who participates in many clubs and activities in the school, before and after school, the darkness doesn’t secure my safety. I’m going to be commuting to and from school, without adult supervision, at times when my safety is at risk. Due to the late hours, I have to wait at bus stops for long periods of time, when residents of these shelters are asked to leave. This

allows interactions between student and shelter residents to increase. How will my and other students’ safety be ensured outside of school hours?” a student named Sean said. “Also, our school yard is permanently open to the public. During lunch, students utilize this area to do homework and play games, but if this shelter opens, how will we have to alter our use of this area? The only thing separating this yard from the public is a fence, which can be very discomforting to many students that will encounter interactions with these shelter residents.” Irene Dougherty, a concerned parent of students at Scholars’ Academy, as well as a representative for Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, further explained some concerns over the proposed shelter’s proximity to the school. “We are very conContinued on page 5

cerned with the homeless shelter. It’s 592 feet from our school. We’re not unsympathetic to the plight of the homeless. Anyone can be a few paychecks away from being homeless. However, this peninsula is not the best place. We are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. We have one hospital, no trauma center. If they need doctors, they have to travel, plus this is a transportation desert. Everyone here on the CEC is a parent, so from one parent to another, we’re asking that you recognize our concern,” Dougherty said. Among some of those concerns, Dougherty spoke of how the shelter residents would be required to leave the building after 8 a.m., when some of the nearby high school students don’t start class until 8:45 a.m.; how it is unknown whether or not the shelter residents will include a mentally ill population; and how if any shelter residents have been involved in any sex-

ual crimes, that they would not have to be identified at the shelter, giving the public no notice. Dougherty proposed an alternative to the shelter plan instead, saying,” Here’s a building that the city is putting money into. Maybe we can use that. We have quite a few District 75 children that would strive in a smaller building.” Another parent made a point that if the shelter were approved, it would be a deterrent for parents to send their children to the nearby schools. “Scholars' is a school that has been proven to draw in children not only from this district, but other boroughs. It has had incredible success. If there is a homeless shelter here, this is going to enter into the decision of a parent who is considering sending their children to this school or to the other nearby schools, which have been trying to encourage students to come to them. They previously closed down the school that was there and opened up these new schools and are hopeful. Putting a shelter one block away

is going to discourage students from coming to these schools,” the parent said. Also among the speakers were local resident Torey Schnupp and Attorney Mike Scala, who have been among those leading the shelter protest since the start, as part of Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters. Schnupp spoke about the safety concerns the shelter would pose to students in the area, and criticized Mayor de Blasio for his failed policies in response to the homeless crisis. Scala explained some of the legal concerns he’s discovered within the shelter contract, especially if the shelter is used to house the mentally ill, which Scala says several parts of the contract, including mentions of mental health services, suggest it’s a possibility. That possibility has parents like Patrick Larkin very concerned. “We don’t know who’s going to be there. There are 5,000 children in these schools. It only takes one predator and I don’t want my child or anyone’s child to be that one because the

Page 5 City of New York fell through on their guarantee for our children to have a safe education,” Larkin said. After hearing from the speakers, District 27 CEC member Alysa O’Shea, who herself suggested that the proposed shelter was in a bad location, made a motion for the CEC to write a letter, supporting Community Board 14’s recommendation to deny the shelter, something that was also requested at the last CEC meeting on the topic. However, a member of the CEC claimed that they haven’t received CB14’s letter about the decision yet, and some other members are new to the CEC and suggested that they’d like to see CB14’s recommendation before making a decision. Lew Simon said he would send it to the CEC. Some also suggested inviting DHS back for another meeting to provide further information. However, with one CEC member acknowledging that “no one wants this,” it seems as if they are willing to throw their support behind the community.

Keeping it Local When Away So, the big wedding day came, and we were so happy to celebrate with friends, family and mermaids, a true gathering of sea people! But we did it inland, away from the sea, although there was a small waterway nearby, the Maspeth Kill, we were surrounded by land. And how did it all come together? Well, it started with a vision, and the Highlanders of Shorefront provided that by looking for a blank canvas with which to paint their masterpiece. But we learned that a blank canvas takes a lot of paint to complete the picture. The blank slate was 99 Scott in Bushwick, only a few minutes from my old Greenpoint stomping grounds. As it turns out, 99 Scott is an oasis in an industrial setting. But where do you turn for the paint? Rockaway, of course. We started by engaging with a caterer. And the suggestions we received were unanimous: get Mary Morgan of Ludwig’s. We met Mary during a particularly difficult time in her life. Not really knowing her personally, we found not just a caterer, but a new friend, and a psychic guide for the path we were to walk. And the choice was inspired, as guests continue to not only rave about the quality of the food, but the quantity of food, especially the appetizers, which as you know sets the whole tone for what is to follow. In addition, her staff could not have been nicer or more professional, and do they ever work hard and long to make it work. And did you know that Whitney, yes that Whit, drove his truck with the oven right into the outdoor cocktail party and served his signature dish: pizza. Whole pies only, no slice for you, one

year! Spectacular. And while sipping some wine, throughout the whole wedding was Geoff Rawling painting the happy couple, kilt and all. Yes, Geoff paints live events. But as many of the mer-people know, one cannot live by bread alone. Rockawayites require drink, too. And if you invite the sea people to a wedding and run out of grog, then you are in trouble. stand the dynamics for keeping the locals well-hydrated! And did they ever. With a team of locals, faces everyone knows, there was never a line at any bar, and to my understanding they broke the record for Irish coffees served in one setting! Wowee! After food and drink, you have to have great music. There are so many choices in Rockaway that it would be too hard to choose, so the Scots went with an outside band that was phenomenal. But we had to add that local flavor to get it just right, so enter stage right: Tiffany Lyons and Simon Chardiet. They handled the cocktail hour as if it were a cool jazz club and you were watching the two coolest cats in the club. When it came to the couples first song together, they went left again, and chose the electrifying Billy Campion, who played an original tune on an acoustic guitar backed by his electronics. He later joined the band for an all-together stunning version of Into the Mystic. If your feet didn’t hurt from dancing all afternoon, it had to be be-

And Rockaway has a great cake maker—Melissa Donovan, owner of Regal Icing Cakery. Let me tell you, she makes a delicious cake and cupcake. How do you remember all this happening? Well you can’t. Which is why you hire a videographer. And of course, Rockaway has one of the nicest ones around, Travis Mitterway of Video Mittermax Films. Unobtrusive, but omnipresent. Perfect. And oh yeah, the wedding ceremony was written by the happy couple and included the Scottish hand-tying wedding protocol that included historical references to “tying the knot” and “a year and a day,” which was admirably administered by the mystical minister Nancy Gahles in a flowing vestment. God truly blessed the event and couple. So, when you leave the peninsula, even for a big day, remember to take Rockaway with you, and spread the love. We live in a truly special place!

ROCKAWAY ARTISTS ALLIANCE PRESENTS: BEACH TOWEL

Starting Saturday, October 26 and running through November 30, the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) A will present w Beach Towel, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Evan Mazellan in RAA’s sTudio 6 Gallery. Mazellan’s seven paintings on view, which vary in scale, remain consistently proportional to the dimensions of a common iPhone screen. Working from photographs taken with his personal mobile device, the subjects are rendered in oil stick rather than oil paint, and use common techniques and mark-making methods native to the disciplines of drawing and traditional printmaking. This acts as a means for problematizing the austerity of painting as a category in favor of a sketch’s more innate, free-flowing intimacy.

Beach towels and bouquets: the artist’s interest in these ubiquitous objects comes out of their unique tendency to showcase combinations of kitsch-ridden cliché and vernacular specificity absorbed from the local contexts in which they appear. Each painting provides a glimpse into a very personal space, though partially veiled. Evan Mazellan (born in 1990 in Orange County, CA and raised in Marion, IN) lives and works in Rockaway Beach, NY. He graduated with a degree in Illustration from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2013 and currently studies under renowned artist Rudolf Stingel. This will be his first solo exhibition with RAA. We visit James Supple’s OldRockawayPhotos.com site all the time to see what was then and what is now, but sometimes change happens so fast that Then and Now becomes Then, Then, and Now. New Law Allows For Early Voting State Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato is among state reps reminding voters that early-bird options are now available. “Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. It’s our chance to make our voices heard and help determine the future of our communities, state and nation. But traditionally, voting has been held on a single day during certain hours, an unnecessarily limited window that fails to recognize the extremely busy lives that New Yorkers lead. New laws I helped pass earlier this year, though, finally change that, because people shouldn’t have to sacrifice paid work hours, family time and other obligations just to vote. “These laws will help increase voter turnout and ensure accessibility, equity and efficiency. We established a nine-day early voting period

before any election, during which polling locations will be open for at least eight hours on weekdays and five hours on weekends. Further, hardworking New Yorkers who are unable to vote during non-work hours are allowed up to three paid hours of time off to vote. “This change helps ensure that voting is accessible and easy—no one should have to jump through hoops to cast a ballot. I encourage all New Yorkers to participate in the democratic process. Early voting for this year’s general election begins on Saturday, October 26. SCHUMER: FDA Watch Baby Food

NYC PARKS LAUNCHES NEW CAPITAL BID PROCESS As part of NYC Parks’ citywide efforts to increase equity, access and improve the capital process, the department is officially launching a new capital bids solicitation system that will allow contractors to view upcoming capital projects and download solicitation documents online. “Today, we can access just about anything online, and we are proud to announce that will now include access to our capital bid solicitation information and resources,” NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver said “The shift to an online platform where contractors can view and download contract documents, learn how to join our pre-qualified list of vendors and more is a step towards increased equity, access, and competitiveness as we work to streamline and im-

prove our capital process.” Starting today, October 23, contractors who are interested in learning more about upcoming projects and want to view the contract documents can do so online. Previously, contractors were only able to view the documents by going to the Olmsted Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, but now, by bringing the system online, Parks is cutting out some of the legwork to help expedite and improve the process. With the online system, the Parks Department says they are making the process more competitive in an effort to yield more bids, widen the contractor pool, and present opportunities for small businesses and MWBE contractors that may have not had the same access to these resources in the past.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer demanded new federal action by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that would force the baby food industry to address the presence of heavy metals in their products and alleviate concerns raised by parents for the health and safety of their youngest and most vulnerable. Schumer explained that a comprehensive study commissioned by Healthy Babies Bright Futures (HBBF) found that 95% of tested baby foods contained toxic metals, including arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. According to the report, 168 baby foods were tested, and one in four products contained all four toxic heavy metals. The samples tested covered 61 brands and 13 types of food, including infant formula, teething biscuits, cereals, and fruit juices, all of which were selected by parents

at their local stores and online. “Simply put, when baby food ingredients across a variety of brands are called into question, it is the job and charge of the FDA to be the cop on the beat making sure serious questions are answered and appropriate guidelines enforced. Right now, that’s not entirely the case, and it’s a fact pattern that needs to change, because parents are demanding answers,” Schumer said. Schumer said the FDA’s inability to even comment on the new report leaves many people concerned, and so in addition, he urged the agency to issue a public statement regarding the findings of the report. Schumer said the medley of metals found within baby food ingredients—including on New York shelves—raises serious health questions that demand clarity and long sought guidelines.

Rockaway’s Craftiest: Meet Gina Osse of Glosse Artworks By Kami-Leigh Agard

In this Rockaway Times series, we spotlight the eclectic band of crafty artists living on the peninsula. These individuals stand out not just because of their creativity and indisputable talent, but the oxygen fueling the passion behind their work—living and breathing in Rockaway. We hope this series gives readers the incentive to support these local artists, who invest their soul, time and energy in producing works of art that reflect what makes our peninsula an unparalleled place to call home. A few years ago, Arverne resident Gina Osse found herself in a bleak depression. After losing her employment at one of the largest financial institutions in NYC, she became consumed by a darkness that she could not seem to resurrect from. However, in 2014,

the damning clouds started to break when with her husband’s encouragement, she started to paint as an outlet to release the feelings that were suffocating her. In the following Q&A, the budding abstract artist, who has a right to crow as she won the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) Viewer’s Choice Award two years in a row, describes how art and her faith in God became her saving grace. RT: You mentioned that you are originally from Long Island City. What brought you to Rockaway? GO: When my mom passed away, my sister was living with her in St. Albans, and she found a postcard addressed to my mother about Arverne By The Sea. Then one Sunday, she said, “Let’s check these houses out, even for a giggle.” So we came out, looked at the model homes, and as they say, the rest

is history. We fell in love with the community’s atmosphere, not to mention the beach, and together we said, “Let’s do it!” Unfortunately, while our house was being built, Hurricane Sandy hit, so we were displaced for four months. However, now that we are here, we absolutely love the community.

RT: It’s daunting to believe that you just started painting in 2014. Do you have any formal training? GO: None. The first time I picked up a paintbrush was at a Paint & Sip event in Brooklyn. I’ve always loved art, especially abstract because I could look at a painting and see one thing, and look at it again, and see something totally different. Then I saw a painting, and said to myself, ‘I think I can do that.’ I was out of work for over three years and I fell into a depression, and my husband bought me some paint supplies, and I literally started scribbling on a canvas. Then I started going on YouTube, researching different techniques and I started experimenting, and that’s how I really started painting. RT:

Continued from Page 16 painting helped you through a rough patch in your life. How so? GO: Painting really helped me through a dark period of depression. When I first started, I used a lot of dark colors because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I felt was in my life. What ends up on canvas just comes from my heart as I paint what I feel at the time. I see how my depression has lifted because now my paintings have lighter colors. Painting has really helped me express my emotions. RT: You also are a certified life coach. How does that tie into your evolution as an artist? GO: With my training as a life coach, we had to first dig within before we could start mentoring or coaching anyone else. I was at place in my life, when I felt that I was not good enough. My mother was a great provider and mom, but she had the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;back in the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; mindset that

you are black, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a woman, and to protect me she would prevent me from pursuing certain endeavors. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t her intention to snub out my life, but unfortunately thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what happened. It took a long time for me to realize that I am good enough. I can participate in anything I choose. So I made the conscious decision to put my foot forward and allow myself to be vulnerable. So coaching other women and girls facing challenges such as domestic abuse, coupled with putting my artwork out there to be judged are both humbling and empowering.

a canvas, how does your creativity unravel? GO: Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m out and about, and something inspires me, be it colors or even a handbag. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just sit in front of the canvas, choose my colors and just paint. It just depends on whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flowing from me at the time. Art, music, poetry comes from the soul. It canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be predicted. I also write short stories and the subject matter is always based upon how Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m feeling or something that transpired. I just release it all on canvas or paper.

RA: You just started painting, so how did you muster up the courage to submit your work to the RAA? GO: My husband is always on the internet, and when he discovered the RAA, he told me to submit my paintings, and I was like, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh no! Nobody is going to like my stuff. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not a trained artist.â&#x20AC;? However, he finally convinced me. I submitted six paintings in RT: When you sit in front of 2014, and two of them were

Page 17 accepted, and in 2014 and 2015, I won the RAAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Viewerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Choice Award. RT: A lot of your Instagram posts are filled with spiritual quotes. For example, â&#x20AC;&#x153;God didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t add another day to your life because you needed it, he added it because someone out there needs you.â&#x20AC;? Your spirituality seems so deep, yet I sense a yearning. Where is this coming from? GO: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Christian, I was raised in a Pentecostal church, but I left organized religion, and when I made that decision, my spirituality grew exponentially because I began to release myself and relinquish control of my life to my God. Celebrating Halloween Around Town

All Hallows’ Eve will soon be here, and while the kiddies have to wait until Thursday, October 31 to trick-or-treat, there’s plenty going on to get everyone in the Halloween spirit, from kids to adults, and even pets! On Friday, October 25, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the 100th Precinct is hosting Trunk or Treat. All costumed kiddies and their families are welcome to grab some goodies from the trunks of cars that will be decorated with Halloween themes. They’ll be parked near the precinct at 92-24 Rockaway Beach Blvd. Some local libraries are getting in on the fun. On Saturday, October 26, the Arverne Library (312 Beach 54th Street) is hosting a “Bootiful” Family Movie night afternoon start-

ing at 2 p.m. There will be spooky and fun Halloween movies through 6 p.m. Also on October 26, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Peninsula Library (92-25 Rockaway Beach Blvd) is hosting a Children’s Halloween Party for kids ages 4-8. There will be fun games, bingo, a freeze dance contest, costume show, and a Halloween parade, so costumes are en-

couraged. On Halloween day, next Thursday, October 31 at 3 p.m., Peninsula will be holding an event for teens. Teens are welcome to wear costumes and participate in fun Halloween activities. If you want to head over the bridge to Brooklyn, Aviator Sports Center (3159 Flatbush Avenue) has been transformed into Green Meadows Farm, where there’s pumpkin picking, a scavenger hunt, a petting zoo, a haunted house, hayrides and cow milking, pony rides, slides and more. It is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on October 26 and 27, and November 2 and 3. Admission is $9. Costumes are encouraged! On the other side of the bridge in Broad Channel, on Saturday, October 26 is the Dawn McIntyre Annual Children’s Halloween Parade. Costumed kids are encouraged to start lining up at 17th Road Park at 11:45 a.m., for the parade that kicks off at noon and head to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department firehouse, where there will be goodies served for all. There’s no reason furry friends can’t get in on the fun and luckily for them, ARF-ARF is ready to provide it. Appendicitis During Pregnancy Abdominal pain during pregnancy is extremely common. Sometimes it can be severe. How do a woman and her doctors know whether her abdominal pain is due to pregnancy or something else, for example appendicitis? Diagnosing appendicitis in a pregnant woman has always been challenging for a number of reasons. These reasons include the overlap of abdominal pain symptoms between appendicitis and normal pregnancy, the higher likelihood of non-classic symptoms with appendicitis during pregnancy, anatomic changes related to the enlarged uterus pushing other

abdominal structures and organs aside, and the physiologic leukocytosis that occurs during pregnancy (physical stressors like infections and pregnancy may cause the white blood cell count to rise). These factors can lead to the development of complications (i.e. perforation of the appendix with peritonitis) from a delay in diagnosis and treatment plus misdiagnosis resulting in a negative appendectomy. In the largest study done to date which included close to 100,000 patients, appendectomy for a perforated appendix was associated with a six percent rate of fetal loss and an 11 percent rate of early

delivery while, for a negative appendectomy, the rate of fetal loss was four percent and early delivery was 10 percent. Traditionally, the use of any X ray technology in pregnant women was avoided due to potential negative effects on the unborn child due to ionizing radiation. Diagnosing appendicitis in general, relies on physical exam, white blood cell counts, and CT scans (which use radiation). So traditionally, other imaging methods have been used on pregnant women. Sonograms are poor tests to assess the appendix, visualizing the appendix in less than two percent of non-pregnant patients. The American College of Radiology recommends MRIs for diagnosing appendicitis in pregnant women. The problem with using MRI technology, which utilizes powerful magnets without any radiation, is that many ERs do not have MRIs available, especially in rural areas. Plus, because the abdominal organs may be distorted due to pregnancy, a radiologist certified in reading MRIs should interpret the scan. Again, some ERs do

Page 27 not have a radiologist available 24/7 to interpret the scans. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately), there is an extensive body of knowledge available on the effects of radiation on a fetus. It comes from studies of atomic bomb survivors. It turns out that the lowest documented radiation dose associated with birth defects is 610 mGy (milligrays). Even in the first trimester, where the fetus is most vulnerable, there are no reports of birth defects reported with doses below 50 mGy. The actual radiation dose associated with a CT scan is 10 to 25 mGy while the fetal dosage is usually less than 5 mGy. Therefore, because of maternal/fetal complications related to missed and delayed diagnoses of appendicitis plus complications of surgery on pregnant women who actually do not have appendicitis (negative appendectomy), many experts now recommend using CT scans on these women to help confirm or rule out the diagnosis of appendicitis and prevent complications. Being On All the Time Practicing awareness, presence, self-study, being busy, moving through tasks, taking care of others, not slowing down and really resting can bring us to a feeling of being brain tired. Always thinking, reading, planning, doing, being in the moment, at some point can come to a head. It can be a feeling of pressure or mental fatigue or just feeling blah, not energized. There are some rebound tools I use which I would like to share with you.

1. Five-minute meditations or rests: put your phone’s timer on for five minutes. Select a beautiful sound. You could also add a meditation timer app. In any chair or seat, draw the belly in and up to elongate the spine, then relax. Inhale long and exhale long repeating silently, "OM," with each inhalation and exhalation. Or you can select any word— love, peace, balance, joy—just repeat the word so your mind has no chance to think.

2. Breathing practices, focus on your breath. Inhale as you count 1,2,3,4 pause, exhale as you count 4,3,2,1. Continue for three rounds like this, using your fingers to know how many rounds you have completed. Then take three rounds in this fashion: inhale as you count 1,2,3,4 pause, exhale as you count 6,5,4,3,2,1. By counting to each breath, again, your mind has no chance to think. 3. If you have a yoga practice, go to your yoga mat. Roll out your mat anywhere in your home. Take a moment to sit on your mat, take a few breaths. Then think about a pose that you really like. One that makes you feel good when you take a class. And walk your body into the pose. Take a few breaths. Adjust. Feel whatever sensations come up. Then walk into another pose. And just focus on creating these yoga forms with your body, being on your yoga mat. If you don’t have a mat, sit on a towel or area rug and do the same in seated yoga forms like forward folds

or twists. The point is to focus on your body and not think. 4. Sitting and listening to music without thinking about what is that instrument or who is playing. Just listening and allowing the sounds to enter the mind. Or listening to music that you know all of the words to and singing along— and maybe even dancing about! 5. Cooking or baking. Making something when you have time, not rushed. And just enjoy doing it. No pressure, not for a dinner or event, just to cook or bake. And of course, then you’ll have it for a meal or to share or to tuck away in the freezer for another time. Periodic rebounds do wonders to rest the thinking mind. There are no goals. Just doing the restful acts, relaxing the mind and reaping the benefits. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Better Things To Do I understand politicians have to, in this day and age, use social media. It is an excellent tool for them to spotlight the work that they are doing and the people they assist on the daily basis. However, I do not think politicians should post selfies, unless it is of them with a constituent or has a political purpose. Recently, one of our local elected officials posted a selfie on Instagram. This local politician then posted a quote and multiple hashtags. One of the hashtags was #bored.

In the Rockaway community should any of our local politicians be bored? I do not think so. Maybe while this said politician was home on a sick day. Maybe they could have done one of the following things that do not require physical effort : 1. Followed up with the Department of Transportation regarding the rough road in Broad Channel on Cross Bay Boulevard. I called the office for an estimate on the timeline and the assistant told me he did not have it in front of him.

He then also told me to use the side roads. I am not sure what side road I can use through the Bird Sanctuary but maybe I can Uber a submarine or a boat. This stretch of road was then the scene of an accident that resulted in the death of a cyclist. He could also have asked them what is the timeline for the painting of the lanes on the same stretch of road in Howard Beach? Both the rough road and the non-painted lines cause trouble. 2. He could form a committee regarding the frequent disruption of service on the A-Train. Today, (Monday, October 21) there was no shuttle service and other issues. 3. Maybe instead of being bored, he could explain to the Rockaway community why our roads have technically decreased in half, along with parking spaces to make way for bus lanes. I cannot imagine the traffic next summer and the gripes

Page 29 about the lack of parking. 4. Another phone call to (I am not sure who), but when is Beach Channel Drive going to be completed and corrected? The way that the road was paved looks like a small child decided to just throw blacktop down on the ground and see how it settled. The contractor who is in charge should be receiving phone calls daily from all of our elected politicians, not just local ones. 5. The beaches : this issue keeps getting discussed, especially due to the storms from last week. My beach is usually larger than other beaches and the water came up to the ramp of the boardwalk. Something must be done. Now I know everyone is entitled to a sick day, but as I say to many young people, think before you post something. Especially when there are so many more issues I did not even address in this week’s column, that could use some attention.

Success Academy Students Take School Fight to City Hall

Success Academy students are ready for a new school. On Monday, October 21, more than 200 Success Academy fourth-grade scholars, parents, and educators gathered on the steps of City Hall to protest Mayor de Blasio’s delay in identifying a permanent middle school location for students from four Queens Success Academy elementary schools. Success Academy Charter Schools offer free public K-12 schools open to all children in the state through a random lottery began in 2006. With 45 schools across Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens, Success Academy enrolls 18,000 students, primarily children of color from low-income households in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Success Academy Far Rockaway, a K-4 school on Nameoke Street, opened in 2016. Students from this and three other Queens SA schools have long been waiting for a permanent middle school to continue on to. Success Academy families in Queens have been waiting for more than two years for a permanent middle school. When no location was made available for this school year as promised in 2017, parents stepped up their advocacy, phoning the mayor, writing and meeting with local Queens elected officials, and circulating a petition that gained almost 13,000 supporters. Three weeks ago, 4,000 parents, scholars, and educators rallied in protest in Roy Wilkins Park, Queens. On Monday, they brought their protest all the way to the may-

or. “We are here today to ask Mayor de Blasio to keep his promise,” said Eva Moskowitz, founder and CEO of Success Academy Charter Schools. “The promise he made at Riverside Church five years ago: to be the mayor of all children — to not discriminate against charter school children — and the promise he made two years ago: to give these Queens students a middle school.” Students and staff from Success Academy Far Rockaway were among those that joined the protest. “One thing everyone should understand about SA is that they challenge us to make sure we understand things! If we don’t understand, they break it down for the whole class, SA Far Rockaway fourth-grader, Dylan Sukh said about the program. “We are here to demand justice, to demand the right of these children to continue their education, to continue to exceed expectations, to break stereotypes and defy zip codes—to continue to learn,” SA Far Rockaway Principal Jose Rosario said. Mayor Bill de Blasio did make an appearance as the protest went on but walked right past the students without engaging. Without a middle school, 227 children will be forced to leave Success Academy, where they are thriving. On last year’s New York State exams, 99% of these fourth graders passed math and 93% passed ELA. About 87% of students are children of color and 69% receive free and reduced-price lunch. More than half of these 227 would be forced into their zoned schools, which are overcrowded and not as high performing. Earlier this month, administration representatives convened a meeting with Success Academy, but failed to provide any meaningful information about a permanent site, according to SA reps.

Richards, Mayor Address Mental Illness Issues Council Member Donovan Richards, chair of the Committee on Public Safety and member of the Crisis Prevention and Response Task Force and Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a $37 million annual investment to close critical gaps in services for New Yorkers with serious mental illness. Many of the strategies were developed by the NYC Crisis Prevention and Response Task Force, composed of over 80 experts including advocates, city agency leadership and community members who have experienced mental illness. Implementation begins immediately. “New Yorkers need to know that the city will respond with a strong public health response when their family members, friends or neighbors are suffering from a mental health crisis,” Richards said. “The status quo must change and thankfully the members of the Task Force developed thoughtful

policy changes that will reduce 911 calls, expand the efforts of Co-Response Teams, HEAT and Mobile Crisis Teams; and enhance services in communities, shelters and hospitals. This $37 million investment is a critical first step towards addressing serious mental illness with a more compassionate and holistic approach than ever before. I’d like to thank all of the advocates who led this effort and will continue to deliver results for people in crisis, including Carla Rabinowitz and the entire Community Access coalition. To ensure those with the most serious needs stay connected to treatment, today’s announcement also includes $14 million to expand intensive services for the narrow population of New Yorkers with untreated serious mental illness who pose a risk of violent behavior. “One in five New Yorkers suffers from a mental health condition. It’s our job to reach those people before crisis strikes,” Mayor de Blasio said. “With this new investment, we’re connecting people to the services they need and keeping our neighborhoods and most vulnerable New Yorkers safe.” Mental health 911 calls have nearly doubled in the last decade in New York City, from 97,132 in

2009 to 179,569 in 2018. With the plan announced today, the City is investing in a new approach to mental health crises that includes a strong public health response to a public health problem, enhanced mental health support in communities, and increased focus on mental health at the Police Department. To reduce these calls, the City will implement a number of plans and programs including adding four Health Engagement Assessment Teams (HEAT), composed of one clinician and one peer (a person who has previously experienced a mental health challenge), to proactively engage people with the most frequent 911 contact, connecting them to care and other stabilizing support; and by adding six Mobile Crisis Teams composed of clinicians, case managers and peers to ensure better rapid response time to urgent situations.

7 Years Since Sandy: Where We Were To Where We Are Seven years later, and while there’s still more to be done, very few remnants of Sandy’s destruction remain. The boardwalk has been in place since 2017. Most burned down homes from Rockaway to Breezy Point have been rebuilt. Most Build it Back projects have been completed, although many are still dealing with the headaches of the aftermath. Most businesses reopened, with

the latest, finally, being the Harbor Light. There’s no doubt that Rockaway has made a strong comeback after the storm that tried to knock us down. For many, the only remnants of Sandy that remain now—are the memories. Here’s a little look back at some post-Sandy scenes and where they are now and where they’re going.

Sandy took many of Rockaway’s playgrounds, but at the end are still many NYC Parks Shore projects planned for the next of this summer, we finally got one back. The new Sandpiper few years, especially along Shore Front Parkway. Playground opened around Beach 107th in August, and there

Man Indicted in PostSandy Murder Mystery By Katie McFadden

While people were busy mucking out their homes, or cleaning up the remnants of them following Hurricane Sandy in Rockaway, a murderer took advantage of the distracted peninsula by using its beach as a place to dispose of a body. Who may have done it remained a mystery and the case went cold, that is, until just a week before the seventh anniversary of the storm.

Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan said in a press release. The District Attorney’s Office identified the defendant as Thyron Aycock. The 43-year-old defendant was arraigned late Tuesday, October 22, before Queens Supreme Court Justice Peter F. Vallone Jr., on an indictment charging him with second-degree murder. Justice Vallone remanded the defendant and set his next court date for November 6, 2019. Aycock faces up to

In mid-November 2012, when many Rockaway residents were unable to access the news, media outlets reported that a body of a man was discovered tied up, placed in a garbage bag and partially buried among the dunes around Beach 13th Street in Far Rockaway. It was discovered on November 15, 2012 as Parks Department workers were cleaning the area from storm debris. The body showed signs of blunt trauma and bruises, but there was no identification. About a week later, the man was identified as Shawn Rucker, a 32-year-old man who had recently moved to New York City from Baltimore. Nearly seven years later, the alleged murderer is now facing charges for the crime. “The victim in this case was brutally killed—his face and body battered with a blunt object—and then he was disposed of on the devastated shoreline after Super Storm Sandy. The defendant, who got away with this heinous killing for years, is now in custody and faces spending the rest of his life locked behind bars,” Acting

According to a New York Daily News report, Aycock told investigators that he met Rucker when he moved in with a woman he was dating named Tiana in Far Rockaway. Aycock allegedly wasn’t fond of Rucker because of how he treated the woman by starting arguments. According to the charges, between October 29, 2012 and November 7, 2012, Aycock allegedly struck Rucker repeatedly with an unknown object causing his death, before disposing of his body on the beach in a Sandy-ravaged Rockaway. It should be noted that an indictment is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Aycock has been serving time on Rikers Island since June for a misdemeanor assault and was supposed to be released on October 26, according to NYC Department of Correction records, and he had served prior prison time for more serious assault crimes.
