Mighty Mike

93 Year Old Local Is Modern Marvel By Bianca Fortis This Saturday night, Mike Greenstein will have the pleasure of bending a steel bar over the bridge of his nose in front of a crowd of hundreds of people. The 93-year-old Rockaway resident is a member of the Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen, which will hold its annual convention in Newark this weekend. Greenstein has been performing feats of strength for most of his life: just a few months ago, he made two special appearances on America’s Got Talent, during which he pulled vehicles – containing passengers – with his teeth. Last weekend he performed a similar stunt in Rockaway at the Beach 116th Partnership Fall Festival and proved to be quite the crowd favorite, though there was a brief moment of concern.. As the strongman started pulling the car by his teeth the rope suddenly snapped free from the car and Mike fell back onto the hard surface of the street. Undeterred, the mighty man got back on his feet ready to give it another try (this time with the rope better secured). And to the delight of the big crowd Mike pulled the car about 10 feet before having his hand raised in triumph. Away from the crowds, in his living room, Greenstein keeps mementos

on display from his life as a performer: plaques he was awarded, photographs of his family, a tiny bottle of his father’s hair, and the last steel spike his father ever bent, done in a hospital in 1977, less than a week before he died of bone cancer. Greenstein is an artist too: from glass mosaic designs to 3D paintings, he himself created all of the artwork in his apartment. His father was Joseph Greenstein, known worldwide as “The Mighty Atom,” the strongest man in the world. The elder Greenstein had been a vaudeville performer and would perform stunts such as bending spikes with his teeth, pulling cars with his hair and lying on a bed of nails. He still holds the world record for the strongest man in a recent edition of “Ripley’s Believe it or Not.” His parents emigrated to the United States with his older sister from Poland. Greenstein and his next eight siblings were all born in Texas. His family then moved to the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn where his youngest brother was born. The family later moved to Crown Heights, which is where Greenstein grew up, he said. After leaving the service, he worked for Trans World Airlines for 17 years until the company went bankrupt. Later he lived and worked

on Long Island, where he became a produce manager for Waldbaum’s. In the early 1980s, Waldbaum’s moved him to Rockaway, where he’s lived ever since. “I find the ocean with fresh air, there’s nothing better,” he said. “It beats the smog and the smoke and the polluted air from cars. And of course there are a lot of pretty girls.” He and his brothers trained with their father, he said. Over time, all of them learned to do feats of strength, although only Greenstein took to performing. He had been drafted into the service during World War II, during which he worked as an airplane mechanic and a teacher. His father would perform shows for the servicemen. Eventually Greenstein was asked if he knew how to perform too; his father brought him some equipment, he designed an act and performed on his time off and in the

local theaters to raise money for war bonds. Greenstein said there is no secret to being a strongman – in fact, he and his siblings take offense to the question that is inevitably asked: “What’s the trick?” While physical ability is important, the real key to superhuman strength is mental concentration – something he learned from his father, he said. “You can’t look at something and say, ‘Well this might be too tough,’” he said. “You have to say, ‘It’s going to move. I can do it no matter what.” Greenstein said this sort of positive thinking can be applied to anything. “Mental thought is the most powerful thing in the human body,” he said “If you put your mind to something, there’s nothing in the world you can’t accomplish.”

By Hanki Iori Our community is resilient and we are well on our way to recovering and restoring our neighborhood. The key to our success is being vigilant, keeping all lines of communication open, and working closely with federal, state and city agencies. Our Association is committed to being persistent in our pursuit to maintain and enhance the quality of life in our community. Our Association has joined with the Neponsit Property Owners Association to see that the repairs of our streets and sidewalks by the beach walls are restored with a unified design to reflect the way they were prior to Hurricane Sandy. The Department of Transportation is responsible for managing the project but has been less than open in working with our community. On August 20th they shared with us their flawed designs for the project. At our meeting, we will be discussing their design and explain what we are doing to see that our communities get our primary access to the beach restored properly. We encourage all residents of Belle Harbor and Neponsit to attend this very important meeting. Our association has had a hard time getting cooperation from Queens DOT Commissioner Dalila Hall. Half Thoughts My modus operandi – MO – is to observe life and hope something inspires me. Well, I observed life all week and nothing and no one inspired me. So it’s kinda your fault that all I’ve got is a bunch of half thoughts for this column. Here goes: According to a 60 Minutes report the other night more Americans have dogs than kids. If you had to walk your kids at 6 a.m. it’d even be more lopsided in favor of the dogs. Rockaway Gliders Fitness Studio on the bay at Beach 114th Street

offers fun in between sweat drops. John Edwards and daughter, Mary Edwards, have a Drop for Dough thing going on, a Biggest Loser weight loss program. A thousand bucks goes to the winner but coming up short has its rewards. The funny stuff is for 2nd place and 3rd place where the runner-ups get dinner for two at Peter Luger’s and a butterball turkey. That’s an ingenious way for a gym to renew memberships. Great, you lost weight, now here’s a prize to put it back on. Now get back in the gym! John Edwards, by the way, is a

passionate boardwalk advocate who wonders why the sections that are intact have to be replaced at all. He says it’s basically a money scam that will just prolong the ridiculous rebuild timeline. Hmmm….. I don’t read much these days but I did finish Whalemina, the story of the Rockaway Whale in one sitting. Get a copy of the book by Laura Cryan with illustrations by Geoff Rawling by going to Whalemina.com. It’s fun and works on a couple of levels. For adults, the story brings back memories of the Rockaway Beach whale and kids will love the fun adventure. Two of the more underrated creepy places you’ll find in Rockaway are Duane Reade and Rite Aid on a weekend night. You should be just about anywhere else and instead you’re here to buy something not very important at all, maybe a snack because you’re just staying in to watch a bad movie. The lights seem oddly dim, the sounds are muffled and everyone inside the place looks like flesh-eating zombies. You came for a snack and wind up in the bad movie you thought you’d see at home. It’s not pretty. If you’ve been there, you know what I’m talking about. Something bad might go down and you’re gonna be caught up in it. You don’t know what it’ll be, but you’ve got another fear. You’re thinking, how am I going to ex-

plain to my friends what I was doing there. Well, it had people talking. Some people were mad, some were pleased. Some thought it was no laughing matter, some thought it was a hoot. Of course, I’m talking about last week’s picture of a man chained to a pew in a church. Someone said it looked like something from the Da Vinci code and he expected to see an albino in the background. If you read a Larry Penner letter, chances are the newspaper had a hole to fill. The Rockaway Times is unique. We don’t have television listings and we don’t print Larry Penner letters. Now you know why I put the bike on the roof of the Rockaway Times. Steve Stathis, owner of Boarders (and the reason the ferry will be packed on Friday) gave me a broken surfboard to use as a decoration. It lasted a couple of days outside the booth before someone stole it. If you see any suspicious characters toting a nine foot blue board, let me know. For now, I’m going room to room checking the Park Inn.

Rockaway Youth Task Force Seeking Mural Designs The Rockaway Youth Task Force is seeking a local artist to design a mural that will be featured in its Community Garden. The mural will be painted on a shipping container that will be converted into an outdoor office. Work on the mural will begin at the Super-

storm Sandy Day of Service event on October 25. Please submit design concepts to info@rytf.org. The deadline for submissions is October 17.

Neponsit Break-ins

There have been a number of garage break-ins in the vicinity in the Neponsit area, according to the 100th police precinct. Bicycles and electronics have been stolen. The NYPD offers several crime prevention tips: 1. Do not leave property in plain view. 2. Check to make sure all doors are secured. 3. If you see anyone suspicious, call 911. The NYPD also offers a free security survey of homes and can offer recommendations. If interested, call the crime prevention officer at the 100th precinct at 718318-4233.

Run or Ride To Help Rebuild

On Saturday, October 25, participants from around New York City will join in Race2Rebuild’s Run, Ride and Rebuild event, which will help support Hurricane Sandy Re-

covery. Runners will meet in Rockaway at 7:30 a.m. for a 5K run/walk or eight mile run. Cyclists will meet at 7 a.m. in Prospect Park and ride to Rockaway to join the runners for breakfast. Participants have the opportunity to volunteer with Rebuilding Together NYC to help rebuild one of 10 Sandy-damaged homes.

Those unable to participate in the Rockaways are encouraged to register for the offsite team. They will dedicate their Oct. 25 workouts to the rebuilding effort. The after party for the event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Bungalow Bar. Register at www.race2rebuild.org.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE

Dear Editor: So they found another $210 million. Past events would suggest that many committee meetings, consultations and various other suspicious delays are in Rockaways future concerning our boardwalk. It’s not too late to stop the madness. The community was sold a monstros-

ity. They have made this a Great Wall of China project which will keep the peninsula a construction site, until the money runs out which will be years. What is it that Rockaway wants ? I know what I want. I want sand replenishment on a regular basis. 10 feet high by 200 feet wide facing the water on the ocean side of the boardwalk. Check, done. I want the new concrete promenade

which will replace the boardwalk from Beach 88 St to Beach 126 St. finished by Memorial Day 2015. I want the rest of our beautiful boardwalk which is intact LEFT ALONE ! Just connect Beach 60th Street to Beach 74th Street the same way they did Beach 35th to Beach 39th Street and we are done. Restructure the deal with Skanska so they fast track the job instead of milking it. As far as what to do with all of the left over money, ferry, modernize 116 Street or just give it back. If the community doesn’t demand this we will have to be content as suckers who stood by while others got rich using Rockaway to line their pockets. Demand a do-over ! IT’S NOT TOO LATE!! Dear Editor: It only takes 20 minutes to make the necessary calls to our political representatives to express our dismay regarding the Mayor’s decision not to extend funding for our ferry. There are millions of dollars allocated everyday in New York City/State. The taxpaying citizens of Rockaway fund these projects and it is our turn to be supported. The politicians work

for us as the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the oil! Last month, Senator Schumer secured $1.9 Billion federal funds to improve transportation in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. Not Millions, but Billions. Rep. Meeks, (who has an office in Arverne By the Sea) was standing beside him applauding the measure. The Rockaway Peninsula was NOT named as a recipient of funding. As one of the most devastated areas, how were we left off this list??!! Call: Govenor Andrew Cuomo (518) 474-8390 US Senator Charles Schumer (212) 486-4430 US Representative Gregory Meeks (347) 230-4032 State Senator Joseph Addabbo (718) 738-1111 NY State Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder (718) 945-9550 NYC Councilman Eric Ulrich (718) 738-1083 Queens Borough President Melinda Katz (718) 286-3000 The ferry is a vital transportation link for the resident’s of the Rockaway Peninsula and Rockaway’s local economy. It also provides an environmentally friendly way of traveling. Please leave your name and address to prove that our politician’s decisions will have an impact on their re-election bids. The funding IS out there. We have to make the effort to obtain it!! Sean Fitzgerald

Different Viewpoints Last week’s story about a man chaining himself to a church bench to protest policies at a local church drew a lot of reactions, pro and con, and somewhere in between. Most of the reactions were about the man and his actions , the pastor, or church policies in general. Some said the man was grandstanding and making it all about himself; another said he could pray anywhere, it didn’t have to be inside a church. Some praised the action. But a few people said we shouldn’t have run the story at all. That’s an opinion we must take issue with. The sour part of the news business is that people sometimes get annoyed with what’s written. Even the subjects of glowing, complimentary articles sometimes take exception because something might have been omitted. When a subject is controversial, it’s often the case that neither side is satis-

fied with the coverage. But not covering something (if you’ve got the staff and ability) can be viewed as its own form of favoritism. In this case, a man was chained to a bench in a church. We asked why. He stated his reasons and then we called the parish rectory for comment. When there was no reply, we called the Diocese. The Diocese said there were “multiple issues with vandalism” and “the decision was made in the best interest of the safety of everyone involved and for the greater security of the building.” Days later, in a letter to parishioners, the pastor, Reverend Doyle. called it a “staged media event.” Most rallies and protests are just that. They are exercises staged to draw greater attention to an issue. In the same letter, the Reverend said “gossip has grown into a frenzy here within the parish.” He went on to write, “(gossip) is a danger for all of us. We need to stop the backstabbing and courageously call people out. We need to stand up and tell each others, ‘that’s not allowed here.’” We’re not sure what gossip he is referring to. But we can say that gossip often fills an information void. We can’t speak to liability issues or access policies but we can hope that, for all concerned, information is dispensed and lines of communication are strengthened.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need • On September 3rd, The Rockaway Times had a front cover ready to print when that great picture of Joe Butler and The Whale came in at the last second. Fact: we ripped up the cover and went with the boy and his whale. Peter Mahon who writes the popular W12th Street Broad Channel blog and links to The RT reports the picture was downloaded from all over, including Great Britain and Italy. • It costs $1 million to get a medallion to operate a taxicab. • Hog Island, a one-mile-long island south of Rockaway Beach, was never seen again after the hurricane of 1893. • In the book “All The Countries We’ve Ever Invaded”, British historian Stuart Laycock writes that “out of 193 countries that are cur-

rently UN member states, the British invaded or fought conflicts in the territory of 171.” • Germany and Japan have the world’s oldest populations, with a median age of 46.1. Niger has the world’s youngest population with a median age of 15.1. Do you know the origin of Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water? Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the Bath water!” (Yech).

By Tracey Greene I have been asked this question -- So you graduated art school, now what? -- dozens of times since I walked across the stage of the Javitz Center in a goofy blue robe in May. My responses have waned (along with my patience). However in a true artistic fashion, instead of answering with a boring, run of the mill response- I can show you in hundreds of colors and textures. On October 11th, 2014 The Rockaway Beach Surf Club has been gracious enough to open its doors and

walls to myself and four other artists to host a group exhibit that will run until October 26th. The showcase will introduce 5 new artists, each with an approach completely unique from the next. The artists’ work range from paint and ink to wood and glass, making for a truly distinct and diverse display. Peripheral Vision has been fueled by hard work and dedication to sharing our passion for art and asking others to look outside what you would normally see. Please come and join us! Party starts on Saturday, 10/11 at 4 p.m.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

“Kid, I don’t need a shrink to tell me I’m crazy but you obviously do!” The unofficial Mayor of Broad Channel, Emperor of West 12th Road, and community activist and gadfly, Mr. Al McCarthy, recently celebrated his first anniversary in Heaven and is still sorely missed by his family, friends and neigbors. I first met Al back in the mid 90’s when our family moved crosstown from Walton Road to West 12th Road. Al grabbed me in the street and after quickly introducing himself shoved a tide calendar into my hands stating “Here kid, welcome to the swamp, you’re gonna need this...we get flooded by the tides all the time.” After being caught several times by tidal street flooding not indicated on Al’s tidal calendar I returned it to him telling him that it was worthless. Al laughed and said “You’re learning kid, now here’s the real deal....look up at the block at the flagpole in the front of my house prior to any really high tide. If the flag is waving up the block away

from the bay, don’t get too excited. If it’s blowing down the block towards the bay, move your car.” I told Al that made no sense whatsoever, but after a period of time I found that he was right on the money with his insane flagpole flood indicator. I never did figure it out. It’s like one of those roads in the country where cars actually roll uphill while in neutral. Go figure! Once Al and I got the whole tidal street flooding issue straightened out he pulled me aside and offered to refer me to a psychiatrist as he felt that my decision to voluntarily reside on W12thRd, or “the swamp” as he affectionately referred to our street, was a good indication that I might need the assistance of a “good talking doctor”. I asked Al if my move to West 12th Road meant I had issues, how did he explain his long term residence on the block? Al simply smiled and responded, “Kid, I don’t need a shrink to tell me I’m crazy but

you obviously do!” When the history of Broad Channel is written, Al will require more than just a footnote, he’s gonna need his own chapter! Speaking of history, the Broad Channel Historical Society was founded in 1994 as a committee of the Broad Channel Civic Association in order to document and preserve the history of our town. Our neighbor, Barbara Toborg, serves as the Historical Committee’s Chairperson and for years has been a staunch advocate of the Historical Society believing that the history of Broad Channel is important because we can’t begin to know about ourselves, to understand the present, the way we live here in Broad Channel and why, until we understand something of our community’s roots in the past. In keeping with those beliefs, the Historical Society will once again sponsor its annual Broad Channel Annual Historical Day on Sunday, October 19, 2014, at the VFW Hall on Shad Creek Road in Broad Channel from Noon until 5 pm. Make it a point to stop by with your family, especially your children, so that they can be exposed to the rich history of our marvelous and unique community. Utilization of available commercial space within Post Sandy Broad Channel appears to be lagging behind the strides being made by residential properties. The skeletal framework of the commercial space at 816 Cross Bay Boulevard remains, as it has for years now, unfinished and a glaring eyesore. The absolutely beautiful retail space located at 901 Cross Bay Boulevard (formerly Wharton’s Apothecary) also remains unused. The commercial property at 1632 Cross Bay Boulevard (formerly The Bay Gull Store) remains shuttered since early this year. The retail space located at the corner of Noel Road and Cross Bay Blvd. (formerly Coogan’s Luncheonette and other stores) remains dark. The town’s sorely missed Bay View Restaurant on Van Brunt Road remains shuttered af-

ter being destroyed by Sandy as does the property adjacent to it, the former Aqua House. Originally intended for a medical building and parking lot, the fields located directly across from the VFW on Shad Creek Road and Cross Bay (the former Milk Farm) and the field across the boulevard on the corner of Noel Road (originally a residential property) remain fallow. The Sunset Marina at the end of West 10th Road has also remained closed since Sandy. Admittedly, Hurricane Sandy accounts for some of the above properties, however, more than half of this unused commercial space existed prior to the storm. If our community of Broad Channel is to survive, grow and thrive economically over the coming years, some strategic thought and planning will have to be given to this issue even as the Post Sandy struggle continues to ensure all residents and families are returned to their homes. More on this topic next week. Stephanie Wagner has announced that the 3rd Annual Broad Channel Christmas Lights Fund Drive is underway. Lighting up both sides of Cross Bay Boulevard for the Christmas holiday is a huge and expensive undertaking but one well worth the effort and greatly enjoyed by the residents of our town. Remember that terrific feeling that came over you when, amidst all the destruction of Hurricane Sandy, you first spotted the boulevard all aglow with holiday lights just before Christmas right after Sandy? Thank you Stephanie! All donations to this fund are sincerely appreciated and can be made by visiting Stephanie’s Broad Channel Christmas Light Fund Drive site at http://www. gofundme.com/bclights Broad Channel...Why would anyone want to live anywhere else? The Ugly Truth To many people, surfing is looked upon as a gracious sport, dancing on the waves, bobbing tranquilly there waiting for that next wave, relaxed and stoic at the same time. Little do people know are the ugly things that surfing spawned. From bigotry of other nationalities, internal factionalism such as short boarders hating on all other type of surf craft (Yes, you Ron!) and the supreme one of them all, localism. Basically hating on anyone that isn’t from your zip code, no scratch that, make that your 2-3 block radius of where you lived or grew up. There is probably over 10 million words written on this topic and for over half a century at least.

For and against. I’ve seen it work and I’ve seen it fail. But does it really belong in today’s waters? A place like Hawaii’s Pipeline is instructive. The waves are so dangerous that they need to regulate so that not more than one rider is on the wave, otherwise catastrophe can occur, including death. On some California beaches, localism starts before even getting in the water. Locals will block access and if you get past them, expect rocks to be hurled at you. Even a few professional surfers have been arrested for altercations due to localism. At a break called the superbank in Australia, there have even been deaths from guys flicking they’re boards and spearing

people. Thankfully it’s nowhere near as bad as that here in Rockaway, and while localism was pretty heavily enforced back in the 60’s through to the 2000’s, it’s not as prevalent today. However, as demonstrated many times recently over at the main jetty, when on occasion there is no localism, it turns into chaos. The amount of boards flying every which way, the constant collisions, the disregard for courtesy and following the rules turns it into an idiot’s day parade. More importantly it makes it insanely dangerous for anyone to be out there. NYC is the melting pot of humanity mixed together, whether on the street, in a stadium or in the ocean waters. As a result it’s been hard over the last decade, with the increase of surfing’s popularity in Rockaway, to justify intense localism. But that doesn’t mean there can’t be some regulating and instructing the vagrants. The best sessions are the ones when the locals are present. They define the lineup, keep order in place (most of the time) and make it harder for DFD’s to get in the way, but it still happens. Some friendly advice for those new to Rockaway; If it looks way too crowded, then go find another break. Be observant in the lineup. Is there a pecking order? Wait your turn. Never, ever, ever

AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD

Page 13 paddle straight to the inside when you paddle out. That’s major disrespect to the people who may be sitting there for a while waiting their turn. See who’s in that rotation circle and maybe start a chat. And finally, if you are confronted by a local, don’t take it personally. The best thing you can do is say you’re sorry and paddle away. You may not be sorry, but anything else will lead to further confrontation. There is always that one guy yelling at other people in the water, just paddle away. Surfing Rules 1. The surfer closest to the peak of the wave has the right of way. 2. Don’t drop in! Related to rule #1. 3. Keep out of the way — When paddling out, stay out of the surfing zone 4. Don’t snake — Don’t paddle inside other surfers. Wait your turn 5. Respect the locals — They have the local knowledge. Watch and learn 6. Don’t Ditch Your Board - Always hold onto your board 7. Beginners: don’t paddle out to the middle of a packed lineup. Find an empty space. 8. Don’t be a wave hog. 9. Respect the beach. Keep the beach clean. 10. Know your limits. If it looks too big, then maybe don’t paddle out.

to come in,” Freeburg says. Students perform in an annual recital at Mary Louis Academy in June and have also performed at the Beach 116th Street tree lighting, the Little North Pole and for the Beacon Nursing Home. Besides teaching her students the art of dance, Freeburg prides herself on the family atmosphere of her dance school. “We don’t push the kids. We want them to work hard, but we really want them to come in here and make friends and be a part of a group that they enjoy.” Newcomer to the Rockaway dance scene, Juliette Admoni opened JUMP Dance Studio in July. She’s just 17 years old. “After Sandy, I saw how everything was really destroyed and we lost a lot of stuff and I felt like I had to give back. I was teaching in Brooklyn, but I thought maybe I should open up here and give back to the community,” Admoni says. “I was so overwhelmed by how great everyone is here. EveryContinued on next page

and seeing them grow dancewise and mature into lovely young ladies”-- and men. Two boys participate in jazz and hip-hop classes. Mrs. Elaine’s School of Dance in Rockaway Park is in its sixth season this year. Seeing the need for a studio right on the peninsula, owner Elaine Freeburg opened her school in September 2009. “There wasn’t much here for kids to do other than sports. I thought it would be smart to start a business here for kids that don’t like sports or wanted to do something different. I wanted to give something to the community,” Freeburg says. Freeburg, along with seven other girls, teach roughly 110 students ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary and lyrical dance and competition teams. Students as young and two and a half years old, all the way up to students in their 60’s, learn at the 112 Beach Channel Drive location. “As long as you can dance, you’re welcome

Thomasina’s Dance Company has small class sizes which allow instructors to give personal attention to each student. To showcase their skills, Ogden’s students participate in parades, competitions and an annual recital held at Beach Channel High School. Some of her students have come back to help teach classes. For Ogden, the most rewarding part about teaching dance is “the smiles on the kids’ faces

By Katie McFadden Soccer, swimming, basketball or little league seem to be the norm around town, but dance is another activity that local kids can experience as they grow up and even adults can try. Whether you want to plié, shuffle or jig, different dance classes are offered at local schools to kids of all ages and skill levels. Serving the area for 37 years, Thomasina’s Dance Company in Broad Channel is the longest-running dance school around. Owner Thomasina Ogden says she first started teaching dance in high school with a friend. “We were both cheerleaders but that’s all they had around for girls. There weren’t really any other activities,” Og-

body was super welcoming and so accepting of it.” Seven instructors teach almost 100 students from ages two to 14, jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary, lyrical and acro dance at the 187 Beach 116th Street location. She also has a jazz and hip-hop class for adults. Admoni’s students have performed for the Wounded Warriors and at Caracas and show off their skills at their annual recital at Frank Sinatra High School. Admoni aims for her school to become like a second home to her students, which has already begun. “Without every here being so welcoming and accepting, I wouldn’t be able to live my dream, so I owe the community a big thank you,” she said. Irish dance is another dance form that is open to locals. Maureen O’Malley of O’Malley Irish Dance Academy started teaching in 1994 and the school just kicked off its 21st season. “My mother taught me how to Irish dance for a couple of years and I wanted to be able to pass that on to new generations,” O’Malley said of starting the school. The school consists of three instructors teaching about 150 students at three different locations. Most locally, classes are held upstairs in the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department firehouse at 20426 Rockaway Point Boulevard in Breezy Point on Mondays. Whether dreaming of making it to Riverdance or just wanting to learn a jig or two,

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2014

O’Malley welcomes students of all skill levels from age four to adult. Speaking of Riverdance, Lisa Murphy, an O’Malley student since 1997 and now a fellow certified instructor, auditioned for Riverdance and is now part of the roster. Murphy, along with other O’Malley dancers have also qualified for regional, national and world championships. O’Malley dancers have also performed at Citifield, MCU Park, Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center and at local Irish festivals and parades. The Acosta School of Irish Music and Dance also offers Irish dance lessons, with a little something extra. Annmarie Acosta Williams, who started teaching in 1998, combines Irish music with her dance lessons so students can learn how to dance and play Irish music on the fiddle, tin whistle, piano, piano accordion or concertina. Acosta Williams says interest in Irish arts has died down slightly over the years and she hopes to change that. “It was always here. Then it kind of vanished. Where I teach in Woodlawn, almost every kid is doing Irish dance and music and I feel like it could be like that here. Everyone I know has kids participating in sports, but if a couple people of tried music and dance, it could be the same.” Williams hopes to shut down the misconception that Irish dance is expensive. “I hear a panic in moms’ voices when they call to ask about dance. I think people are afraid to try it be-

Page 15

cause they see the wigs and dresses and it freaks people out,” Acosta Williams said, adding that Irish dance only gets expensive when a dancer excels and participates in competitions, which is optional for her students. She teaches on Mondays at the Knights of Columbus and spends half an hour teaching dance and the other half teaching music. “You can have a taste of everything,” Acosta Williams says. All of the local dance schools accept new students on an ongoing basis, but those who are interested are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible. Thomasina’s Dance Company in Broad Channel can be reached at 718318-0073. Those interested in Mrs. Elaine’s School of Dance can stop by or call 718-318-1021. Admoni of JUMP Dance Studio can be reached at 917525-3493. O’Malley Irish Dance Academy can be contacted at 718-3756433. For a taste of Irish dance as well as music, call Acosta at 718-945-9364.

Madelaine Chocolate Aims to Stay Madelaine has a long history in New York City: it was founded in 1949 by brothers-in-law Henry Kaye and Jack Gold. Several years later the company moved into a larger space in Brooklyn. Finally, in 1967, it moved to its current site in Rockaway. Before the storm, it employed 425 workers. Now it has 120, enabling it to operate at between 25 and 30 percent of its previous output. Despite the smaller output, the factory still gets busy for the holidays – on Tuesday afternoon, workers were preparing foil-wrapped chocolates made in the image of Santa Claus for the Christmas season. “We’re trying to advance as much as we can,” Farber said. “We’ve kind of hit our limit as much as we can produce.” Farber said the new mayor seems to be more willing and receptive to aiding the company than the previous administration. “Hopefully there will be a positive outcome so we can stay here and get our business back and our employees back,” he said. Farber also said the old Madeleine storefront will reopen in time for Halloween. “The neighbors make phone calls every day asking when we’re going to put the store back together,” he said. “We feel we have to do that.”

By Bianca Fortis The Madelaine Chocolate Company, historically one of the largest employers is Queens as well as in Rockaway, is doing everything it can to keep its peninsula location, according to its president and CEO, Jorge Farber. The company’s factory and warehouse, located at 9603 Beach Channel Dr., suffered a total loss two years ago during Hurricane Sandy. After the storm hit, the 200,000 square foot facility didn’t reopen until July of the following year, after some of its equipment had been repaired. Earlier this year, the company was considering selling its current quarters and moving to a new location. Farber said the company is investigating its different options and is still trying to obtain funds from the New York City Department of Small Business Services for relief from Hurricane Sandy. Those funds will ideally allow it to stay in Rockaway, which is the company’s goal, he said. “But if we have to move the business, we will,” Farber said. “Many places would like a business with such potential to move in.” Possible new locations include elsewhere in New York State, as well as New Jersey, he said.

Get Ready to Rock With ‘The Grimps’

By Bianca Fortis Five years ago, Belle Harbor resident Richard Sirgiovanni wanted to start a project that would allow him to combine his two loves: music and animation. And so “The Grimps” was born. “The Grimps,” a children’s animated rock ‘n’ roll TV show, is about a cast of four characters, Winston, Mac, Emerson and Moonie – who happen to resemble the Fab Four. The story of the Grimps originates 500 years ago “in a faraway land,” where the characters were popular musicians. An evil wizard, Spekter, jealous of the band, cast a spell that

The Rockaway Times

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2014

turned them into grimps, hairy little creatures banished into the forest. Another character, Magic Alex – who is also the band’s manager – devised a spell that would transform them back into humans overnight. They return as the Grimps, a rock’n’roll band. The Grimps will be a familyfriendly show that also teaches the history of rock music, Sergiovanni said. He spent much of his career working in the advertising industry – he actually created the “Gotta go to Mo’s” slogan for the sporting goods store Modell’s. He also worked as a freelance cartoonist for newspapers and books. “I was able to keep my hands in both things, music and drawing,” he said. He has done all of the art so far for the show, as well as created the characters and developed the storyline. He worked with other songwriters to write and record the series’ theme song as well. He is now working to sell the show to a television network. His social media fanbase has grown to more than 16,000 people worldwide, he said. Sergiovanni said he receives fan mail from around the globe, including throughout the United States, Australia and Japan. His fans range in age from 8 to 70. He’s hoping that his fanbase will help

impress the networks. “I think the show will sell on the essence of the idea itself,” he said. “It’s just a matter of getting it to the right television or film person who sees that.” Sirgiovanni has been promoting the show via internet radio and television shows.

On October 18, Sirgiovanni and his show will be featured on Teen Kids News, a newsmagazine series for children. It will air at 9:30 a.m. on Channel 5. For more information about the show, visit www.thegrimps.com.

Biking Across America: Sophomore Daze

By Shane Shackleford Remember back in High-school, on the first day of sophomore year, your home room teacher broke down rather fleetly what the word “sophomore” actually meant? Well, we are those wise fools. After completing our 2000th mile, we were confident that the rest of the 1800 miles to San Francisco would be nothing short of a home stretch. Well, no. It’s 102 degrees today, 73 miles outside of Dallas, the actual deserts in New Mexico and

Arizona seem like the stretch that will send at least one of us home. But, like a sophomore, one is constantly learning to adapt to what he or she does and figures the best way to survive, then achieve. With wise words finding open ears, your body and spirit are inspired to reject all passivity, accept your responsibility, then by all means, lead courageously. 2119 miles complete. Bring on the desert!

Now And Then In less than three weeks the world will be focusing its attention once again on all the communities which were, or more fitting: STILL ARE, affected by Hurricane Sandy! Eleven of those neighborhoods are right here on the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel. They will be news crews roaming all the Sandy affected community’s streets, looking for that remnant from the storm for a backdrop of a reminder of what we all lived through two years ago, or more fitting: STILL ARE! Unfortunately for us, you don’t have to look past the next block to stumble upon a reminder of what we went through or more fitting: STILL ARE, because of Hurricane Sandy! Coming up on the second anniversary of Hurricane Sandy,

many communities will be celebrating major accomplishments and strides they’ve made during their sandy recovery. Sadly, other than a dab of sand on the beach, there’s not much government can be proud of. Only a tiny percent of Build it Back applications have been addressed and less than two percent of our boardwalk has been rebuilt! There is still so much left to do. I could go on and on with the “TO DO LIST” for our Peninsula. At the top of my latest “to do list” there is one item I will scratch off today! I recently attended an Office of Emergency Management (OEM) meeting in Broad Channel. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder , joined by Councilman Eric Ulrich and Senator Joe Addabbo, spearheaded a

community meeting with OEM to discuss future plans for a better response by OEM after a disaster in our communities. I had a chance to ask a few questions of OEM. One question I had: Was OEM aware of the “natural” recovery locations which popped up after the storm? There were many locations which simply popped up with regular citizens after the storm. OEM seemed keenly aware of many locations of home grown relief centers around our communities: The American Legion hall in Broad Channel, many in Breezy Point, St. Frances school and church, Belle Harbor yacht club in Belle Harbor, many synagogues and many churches in Far Rockaway, Edgmere and Arverne. I was a little surprised at how little OEM knew of the relief effort near the 100th Pct, called Rockaway Recovery, which popped up in the parking lot at Beach 94th street in Rockaway Beach immediately after the storm! The idea of Rockaway Recovery 94th Street was the idea of three amazingly wonderful women, Joanne Smith, Lauren O’Connor and Jennifer DeLuca. Rockaway Recovery was founded in the immediate aftermath of Super Storm Sandy and became one of the largest grass root hubs for donations from private and corporate sponsors. Rockaway Recovery has been acknowledged by both the New York City and New York State Comptrollers offices, the Queens Borough President’s office, and the

Coalition of Hope, a non for profit California based charity specializing in natural disaster relief. Rockaway Recovery partnered with the American Red Cross to sustain a workable facility for over ninety days providing hot food, a warming facility and a supply outpost for those who suffered loss of basic needs due to Sandy. Rockaway Recovery even hosted the largest Christmas party ever in Rockaway serving homemade soup and sandwiches to over 9,000 guests. They had over 50,000 children’s gifts donated and fought with the mayor’s office and the parks department over giving them out. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillebrand intervened and got them the permits needed to host the party and give out the gifts. All the leftover gifts were given to four children’s hospitals, two women’s shelters and the Little North Pole up in Belle Harbor. I personally, was the recipient of Rockaway Recoveries efforts and even had the opportunity to lend a hand with them for just a few hours. I saw first hand why the three amazing ladies are among The Rockaway Peninsula’s finest volunteers. As I said earlier, “There is still so much left to do.” I hope everyone joins me in knocking one more item from our “to do list.” Thank you to Jennifer, Lauren and Joanne for all you did for all of us two years ago and Thank you to all volunteers throughout the Peninsula and Broad Channel for making it that much easier!

What does it mean to “be well and happy”? These are such common words, yet if we really think about them, what do they really mean? We all want to be well and happy, but the body and mind are so complex that it is hard to understand. Is everything all in sync at any time? The quest for balance is definitely a process, but it is attainable. So, the answer is yes – we can be in balance and at peace and still be hit with what life brings. Balance is the key word. Balance within – deep inside. Wellness and happiness to the core. Not being happy because someone did something or being happy sharing in an accomplishment or anything like that is more on the surface. A sense of ease and happiness and wellness is on the inside. That sense of wellness, happiness and ease is a strong thread that underlies whatever is happening. So whatever happens and doesn’t happen, and whatever someone says or does that is offensive, it may shake you for a moment, but you have the thread to fall back on. You. Even with this feeling of un-ease, we can be upset about something, but when there is that even, balanced base at the core of ourselves, we can ride the unhappy event or illness and rest in that place of balance. How to get there? See beyond the turmoil; visualize peace. Take quiet time. Take a scan of what’s going on first physically. How do you feel? How do your feet feel? How do you ankles feel? Legs? Knees? Hips? Belly? Chest? Neck?

Arms? Wrists? Elbows? Shoulders? Neck? Head? Whatever comes up as a flag, note it. Then take a deep breath and send the breath to that or those places. Send the breath?? Don’t question this too much. Just say to yourself: I’m sending my breath to this physical place in my body that feels dis-eased. Not at ease. Then go to the next. This may be enough for one time or for a few times. Focus on the physical body, feel what is going on and send some breath that way. Healing breath. Maybe the next time take a scan of what you’ve been thinking and feeling. That’s another matter altogether. Take it easy and begin to explore. Take the time to know that you are the source of your own power. Generally, how do you feel? Do you think positive thoughts or negative thoughts? Whatever you think and say becomes part of you. See a place of ease and contentment manifested within. Let whatever negative thoughts or actions that come your way be warded off by a shield that you place in front of you: “Negativity does not live here. All that is positive and peaceful, welcome.” It doesn’t matter what your circumstances are, it doesn’t matter if you just got laid off from your job, or you got a promotion, or your child got in to the school you really wanted, or if your family is going through a tough time or a high, wonderful time. Cultivate a strong thread of positivity and you will be well and you will be happy. No matter what.

Small Businesses Vie for $150,000 By Bianca Fortis Several Rockaway businesses have the chance to win $150,000 in grant money through the Mission Main Street Grant Program, sponsored by Chase Bank. Small businesses had until Sept. 3 through Oct. 3 to submit an application. They must receive 250 votes before Oct. 17 to be considered. Next, a panel of judges will choose its top businesses, and then award 20 grants in January. Aside from the money, winners also get a trip to Google Headquarters, a Google Chromebook Laptop and a $2,000 coupon toward oe market research study with Google Consumer Surveys. Rob Rodriguez started his online business, Honeydrip Jewelry, in January, with the goal of allowing women to buy high quality jewelry at an affordable price. “We’ll have the types of items that are available at Macy’s and other popular department stores,” he said. “But because we don’t have to pay rent, we’ll be able to afford to drop prices.” Currently his website is offline and being revamped, he said. It’s scheduled to be back online later this month. The grant would allow Honeydrip to expand its inventory. Of-

ten, wholesale businesses require stores to purchase a minimum amount of inventory – which can cost $800 or $1,000 or more – something a fledgling company like Honeydrip can’t necessarily afford to do. Eventually he would like to branch out into a retail store in Rockaway. He said he would employ individuals who are in need of work experience. Rodriguez looks to large department stores for inspiration for how large his business can grow. “We’d like to reach that level and at the same time avoid people having to break the bank to buy something they like,” he said. Scott Ruscillo, who owns Scott’s Computer Repair, is also participating in the program this year. He tried last year too. He said the nature of his business – computer repair house calls – should make him stand out from the other applicants. He works alone for most of the year, but hires two employees in the wintertime, when he gets the most calls. Aside from making house and office calls, an added benefit of his business is that he offers better prices than big box stores such as Best Buy, he said. Ruscillo, who also manages

properties as a side gig, has been working on computers since he was in college. He has run his own businesses for about three years. The business was officially incorporated just last week. “I was supposed to be a police officer,” he said. “But I wanted to do the entrepreneur thing.” He said he could use the grant funds to launch an advertising campaign and eventually expand his business into other parts of the city as well as Long Island. He said he prioritizes the reputation of his business. “A business will take off as long as you do good work and keep everyone happy,” he said. “You’ve gotta put the reputation before the bucks.” Rockaway businesses participating in the Mission Main Street Program: CROM Martial Training Honeydrip Jewelry LaBlastNY Lana’s Loft Little Dudes and Divas Mi Ola Rockaway Jet Ski Scott’s Computer Repair Thai Rock Two Bridges Home Improvement LLC

Rockaway Film Depicts a Story of Loss By Bianca Fortis A local filmmaker is crafting a love letter to Rockaway. Peggy Gormley, who has lived on the peninsula for eight years, wrote

and is co-producing a short film, “Beyond Repair,” about a brother and sister who are from Rockaway. She and her co-creators are trying to raise $25,000 in an Indiegogo

campaign to fully fund the film from pre-production through post postproduction. The 25-minute drama will depict the siblings, who experienced a traumatic childhood, as adults. The brother becomes successful as an adult. His difficult childhood only led him to become more responsible, Gormley said. The sister, however, becomes eccentric. Her childhood affects her in a very negative way, and the film contrasts the two experiences. The story shows the brother helping his sister repair the family home, which was torn apart by Hurricane Sandy, Gormley explained. The film is a human story, but Rockaway is not only a setting, but also a third character in the film, Gormley said. “We’re formed as human being by our childhood,” she said. “The events of our childhood affect us and make us the person we are.” This is true, no matter how old we are, she said. The title of the film, a play on words, addresses the damage caused by the

storm, but it is also a metaphor for the impact childhood can have on adults. “Who they are, the way the grew, can’t necessarily be fixed or straightened out,” Gormley, a teacher at NYU, said. “They have to figure out what is wrong and fix what that is.” Similarly, that holds true for the devastation caused by the storm. “Some of the damage can’t be repaired,” she said. “We lost certain things.” Gormley will act in the film, alongside James McCaffrey. Andrew Michael Ellis will direct. The film will take five or six days to shoot, she said. Plans are to shoot at the end of this year or early next year. “We’re looking for the community to know about the indiegogo campaign,” she said “Maybe they’ll want to be part of it.” As of Wednesday, the film had raised about $4,000. The indiegogo campaign closes on November 23. To see the indiegogo campaign, visit https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/beyond-repair.

In a lg. mixing bowl add 1 lb of chop meat from Curran’s meat market (mention that you saw the recipe in the Rockaway Times for meatballs and they will know what to do). 1 tbsp. of fresh chopped parsley A few red pepper flakes Add a crank or two of fresh cracked pepper and a pinch of sea salt (it’s a beach thing). 1 tbsp. of Locattelli Romano grated cheese 1 tsp. of sugar 2 eggs 1 cup of Italian bread crumb (not more, less is o.k.) Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Roll the meatballs into walnut sized pieces, dip them in a saucer of milk and add them to the hot sauce. cook for 1 hour on low covered. Use DeCecco spaghetti. Make extra garlic and oil in step #1 and set it aside for garlic bread, spaghetti, and/ or broccoli. serve with a nice Chianti and ENJOY ! Disclaimer: I’m sure that this recipe has been altered from the traditional Italian style of cooking (or even Mrs. Pizzaghatti’s recipe) and my apologies to my Italian friends for that. By Emil R. Lucev Sr. & daughter, Katie Lucev The search continues‌ Recently at a postcard show held on the shores of Lake Ontario in Upstate New York at the town of Scriba Firehouse, near the city of Oswego, yours truly found a postcard mailed from Broad Channel in 1920. The photo postcard is of the Broad Channel railroad station of the Long Island Rail Road’s line over Jamaica Bay (Rockaway over the bay‌no Jamaica). Our camera is positioned on the north side of Noel Road at the streets east end where two obelisks gave entrance to the station plaza now known as West Road in Broad Channel. A west bound train towards the city has just come over the trestle from Hammel’s Station in the Rockaways. If the train were going to the Rockaways it would be known as the eastbound train. To the right of the camera and not shown are Sigwalt’s Grocery Delicatessen Tobacco & Confectionary stores. Then later known as Kuhn’s Saloon.

The 2 story wooden crossover led to the westbound side of the station. The ticket office was located on that side as was Edward Schleuter’s Delevan House and Palm Garden at the extreme south end of the station. Also at this point was a sort of Subway that went under the tracks to allow passengers access to the eastbound track. The east side of the Broad Channel Station held may other Hotels, Fishing Clubs & Yacht Clubs. Names such as Cherokee and Enterprise were well known. There were many others too numerous to mention. For station plaza construction all buildings on the west side of the tracks were moved to the west side of what we know today as West Road. Names found for these structures were Carpenter, Hoobes, Gulzenleuctcher & Eldert. One became Kuhn’s and the other became Offices of the Broad Channel Corporation. In this photo the 6th Road walk is to the left at the north end of the station plaza.

Snowflake Softball: Change Of Pace

Ahoy Rockaway ! Water Temperature: 66.2*F at B111th st It’s here, this is the BIG one for all of you FALL anglers (me included). Black fish season is now open, and the little monsters are hungry. They make their homes around protective structures, bridges, docks, piers, wrecks, and submerged piles of rock. Black fish like to eat fiddler crabs, green crabs, and crustaceans. They can fight very hard and will head back down to the structure after being hooked, so be prepared to lose some tackle. Black fish strike the bait very hard and fast, so it does take some skill at setting the hook in them (that’s the fun part). They are champions at stealing your bait. A stiff tipped fishing rod works best to set the hook fast. This is also the time of year when blue fish and striped bass get more active. Blue fish often show

up at the surface chasing bunker while you are black fishing, so keep those big swimming lures handy and be ready to switch over fast. Jamaica bay and outside: Tom’s Wave service station on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park reported that they were very busy this past Sunday with fall fishermen heading out for the black fish, striped bass and blue fish. Tom said that the porgy fishing is still good, and there is some blue fish action around as well. The big news is that Tom has some confirmed reports of three striped bass being taken off the beach. The bass were taken using clam as bait, and as Tom put it, “This news is encouraging!” Tom has plenty of bait available – green crabs and fiddler crabs are on hand if you would like to try your luck. That’s it Anglers, good luck and tight lines!

By Richard George The Jamaica Bay Babe Ruth Snowflake League decided to borrow a method used in the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League called ‘Position Night’ to help shuffle up the standings midway through the season. But instead of one day of ‘Position Night’, we will have four crazy nights. Anybody catch the Adam Sandler reference? All teams that went to battle this week were fighting for their final seeding for ‘Position Week’. The games starting on September 29th were a little different than the norm. This night had two doubleheaders back to back because of a rainout the week before. The Sons of Pitches and Old Head had rained out the previous Thursday and scheduled their makeup game to follow Old Head’s originally scheduled doubleheader against the Crushas. Let’s just say it was an awful night for Old Head. They lost 4 straight games by a combined total of 49 runs. 49!!! These four losses put Old Head at 0-8 with a very slim chance to join the playoff hunt. But like Andy Grammer so eloquently sings, “You gotta keep your head up!!!” Tuesday night saw the defending champs Ruffle Bar take on Rock Fam. Not only did the Ruffle Bar bring their bats, but they

also brought their brooms. They swept Rock Fam which catapulted them to first place going into position night. Rock Fam falls to 3-5 with a 6th place seed for ‘Position Week’. Wednesday night saw Marine Park taking their talents to the BCAC to take on the Black Sox. The first game saw the Black Sox jump out to an early 5-0 lead but that lead would soon be gone. Marine Park turned the game around and wound up beating the Black Sox by “Mercy” in the first game and also in the second. With these wins, Marine Park grabs the second seed and the Black Sox slip to the four seed. Thursday night was a quality double dip that resulted in another sweep. The Sons of Pitches took down The Wire twice with the first game ending with a play at the plate. The SOP grab the 3 seed and The Wire fall to the seven seed. ‘Position Week’ will showcase the 1 seed (Ruffle Bar) taking on the 2 seed (Marine Park). The 3 seed (Sons of Pitches) vs. the 4 seed (Black Sox). The 5 seed (Crushas) going up against the 6 seed (Rock Fam). And last but certainly not least, the 7 seed (The Wire) going to battle against the 8 seed (Old Head). Best of luck to all during ‘Position Week’. Full standings will run next week.

The End Is Here (This column ran online at Rockawaytimes.com on 9/23. Readers of the print version demanded we offer it in the paper). We are screwed! Whenever I decide on a column I think of my opening line, and let it flow. The above opener is the only line needed regarding the following column. We are in the midst of an international crises, not of war or civil unrest, nor or Mother Nature. This one is handcrafted, delivered to your doorstep. It has spread faster than the Bubonic Plague swept in the Middle Ages, and with no known antidote we are certain to meet an untimely Black Death, at least in terms of social interaction. The outbreak, Smartis Phoneitus can only hope to be contained. But I for one, am suffering from a serious case of iPhoneobia. With the latest release on September 19th of the iPhone 6 & 6 Plus, the 5th Avenue Apple store has seen productive members of society camping out for three weeks in anticipation. Is this real life? Currently, I’m working near a high school. At dismissal, hundreds maybe even thousands of teens descend onto the streets of Brooklyn. The rush to get out of class is only rivaled by the immediate need to be updated by all things social media. The conversations I have overheard make me scratch my head. “Did you see what Ernesto tweeted?” “Nah yo, is it on Facebook”? “Nah it’s on Instagram though.” “Ight, I gotta like it then.” When I was coming up, we con-

cerned ourselves with getting a screen name to drop AOL game on our latest crush. Despite using technology, it still left mystery on who the person actually was and made the game of solving the mystery all the more challenging. If you were lucky, you got the house number and awkwardly asked said crush’s father for permission to talk to his daughter. Her dad knows, we are definitely screwed! Nothing irks me more than going to a concert and watching a sea of white screens throughout the stadium. At Tom Petty at the Garden last week it reminded me that though we live on Planet Earth, we have indeed become alien robots from outer space. Live in the moment folks, enjoy the show and for God’s sake put your damn phone away. Gavin Degraw said it best, “I’m looking at the crowd, and they’re staring at their phones.” Tom and Gavin knows, we are screwed! Over the next few decades I fear the absolute breakdown of social interaction. I told someone that my kids will not have a phone until they are ready to pay for it just like my parents did with me. He said I got my daughter one so I know where she is. I was home at sundown and didn’t need to be found with an iPhone tracker. If I wasn’t home for dinner, I didn’t eat. If I needed to call home I used a quarter. It worked just fine for all of us. We are at war with ourselves, people, and I am at war right now as I complete this article in the notes section of my iPhone 5. I’m so screwed!
