Local Walks For A Cure By Bianca Fortis For the eighth year, Kelly Kelley will walk 39 miles throughout New York City, her way of joining in the fight against breast cancer. The Rockaway resident first participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in 2007, just as she was battling the malignant disease herself. She had just finished up chemotherapy when her friends decided to participate in the walk on her behalf. “I thought, ‘you guys are crazy, but OK – that’s fine,’” she said. “I thought, ‘how the heck are they going to walk 39 miles?’” Although she intended to be more of a cheerleader for her friends than a participant, she ended up walking nearly the whole route. She’s continued to walk every year since, which she describes as a mission. “I’ve got to do whatever I can to hopefully help find a cure,” she said. “I hope I can help make a better future for my daughter and for all young women.” The funding goes toward research, as well as free mammograms and other services for individuals who can’t afford health care, she said. This year Kelley’s minimum goal is $5,000, although she usually raises much more. In all her years combined, she’s

raised more than $48,000, she said. Kelley described the annual event as an empowering experience. “In a way it becomes addictive,” she said. “It’s just a great sense of accomplishment.” She used to walk the Rockaway Beach boardwalk for training, but that’s not an option since since Hurricane Sandy. She said she now walks up and down the streets of Rockaway and waits for the miles to add up. This year’s walk takes place this Saturday and Sunday; Kelley’s 39.3-mile route will run throughout Manhattan, part of Brooklyn and into Randall’s Island. “It’s my way of giving ‘the finger’ to breast cancer,” she said. “You knocked me down, and I can get back up. I’m strong enough to do this.” To read more about Kelley or to visit to her campaign, go to www. tinyurl.com/supportkelly2014. Photo courtesy Kelly Kelley

Mayor Makes Rockaway Appearance By Bianca Fortis Mayor Bill de Blasio doesn’t seem keen on changing his mind: service on the Rockaway Beach Ferry is still expected to be terminated at the end of the month. The mayor said the city’s plan was always to use the ferry as a temporary alternative until the subways were back up and running. He said it would be more prudent to develop a permanent citywide plan. De Blasio made the statement during a press conference Wednesday evening in Far Rockaway. He was at the Challenge Preparatory Charter School in order to announce two new workforce development programs. The first program is the Build it Back Local Hiring Initiative, which gives local residents priority for Sandy-related construction jobs at Workforce 1 and Build it Back Centers. The second program the mayor announced is the Rockaways Economic Advancement Initiative, which will connect local residents to high-quality, full-time employment, de Blasio said. The $1.1 million program will

offer services such as career counseling, resume and interview support, referrals to employment opportunities and entrepreneurship education. De Blasio’s press conference kicked off the Sandy Recovery Opportunity and Resource Fair, which brought together about 50 different government agencies businesses and organizations. Community members lined up outside well before the Fair officially opened at 5 p.m., and the line was wrapped around the building. The administration is focused on providing opportunities to the hardest hit neighborhoods, de Blasio said. “Sandy exposed long-standing inequalities across our city – and few places felt that as deeply as the Rockaways,” he said. De Blasio also addressed a number of other issues that are significant to the Rockaway community. On the recent New York City Department of Investigations report that was critical of the Build it Back program, de Blasio said there have been many improvements made to the program since his administration took office. He added the

program accomplished 500 construction starts by Labor Day, a goal he and new director Amy Peterson had set when she became the head of the program just a few months ago. According to recent news reports, the de Blasio administration had been sent a memo by the Mitchell Silver, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner, which noted that an additional $200 million in fund-

ing for the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk could potentially be a “political liability” for the mayor. De Blasio said he hadn’t actually been aware of the memo until after the news reports were published. “Of course it’s not a political liability,” he said, indicating that the additional funds are great news for the peninsula. “Nothing is a political liability if it comes attached to resources.”

Good Lines I have to protect the guilty here because well, you’ll understand. All you romantics leave the room. My buddy’s parents just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. The long-wedded husband accepted congratulations but shook his head and said. “You only get 20 years for murder.” I don’t know if he borrowed the line but it was the first time I heard it so it seemed genius to me. Some lines have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years but I’m pretty clueless. When someone drops a line on me I’ve never heard before, I’m awestruck and can’t wait to use it as my own. Half the time I’m ripping off Ben Franklin or Mark Twain and don’t even know it. Another friend stopped by The Rockaway Times booth and we were gabbing about who-knowswhat, maybe gossip at a local church. “My father used to say ‘Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.’” Genius. Again, I didn’t know if that’s three hundred years old but it was new to me. His wise pop also offered him sage advice on life in general. He said, “love many, trust few, and always have your own canoe.” (Especially if you live on the same street in Broad Channel as Peter Mahon). And as wise as those words were, it was his mother’s line that had me cackling. “There’s no such time, as when your father comes home, I’ll take care of it now.” Ah, the sound of another mother ruling the roost! We’re always hearing about kids saying the darndest things but the Greatest Generation has their own way of talking, too. I think they all went to the English Proverb school. Somehow I just can’t see baby boomer parents using some of the gems I heard growing up: If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. That one just took too much thought. My mother would see my confused face and just repeat it slowly, annoyingly, emphasizing

each word. The proverbs made sense but the King’s English was strange and nobody growing up in the 60’s was going to be caught saying things like, “A fool and his money are soon parted.“ Soon parted? I get it, I get it. But soon parted? Who talks like that? Some proverbs were like Lay’s potato chips – one always led to another. A cat can look at a king. Yeah well, curiosity killed the cat. But satisfaction brought him back. The Greatest Generation was passing on wisdom with proverbs like In the kingdom of the blind, the one eyed man is king but we were more interested in repeating lines from TV shows and movies. Sock it to me! Dyn-o-mite! I’m a wild and crazy guy. (I guess the Greatest Generation puts us to shame again. They quote Ben Franklin, we quote Jimmie Walker). Some lines are neither proverbs or catch phrases but live on. I’m pretty sure Ben Franklin didn’t say “I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.” But it’s dumb and smart enough at the same time that it deserves a place somewhere. Boyleing Over: Congratulations to Leaper Howley. He earned his nickname because he used to be able to jump to the sky. Well, time marches on. Now he’s a grandfather with a Chihuahua. **The Rockaway Times is so cool everyone over 90 knows it. Strongman Mike Greenstein, 93, said he “was pulling for The Rockaway Times” when he and his teeth pulled a car at the Beach 116th Street Fall Fest and Mrs. Abbracciamento (remember Abbracciamento’s on the Canarsie Pier?) called to say she never misses an issue of The Rockaway Times and wants to be on the mail subscription list (whenever we start). Mrs. A is a centenarian living in Breezy. She joked, (I think) that she was wearing a Rockaway Times t-shirt as we spoke.

RDRC Pushes for Development of Far Rockaway By Bianca Fortis A Rockaway economic development group is working on a plan to redesign downtown Far Rockaway. The Rockaway Development Revitalization Corporation recently received full approval from the New York City Public Design Commission for a DOT plaza at Mott Avenue and Beach 20th Street. Features would include bench seating, gardens and enhanced lighting, according to the RDRC President and CEO Kevin Alexander. When it originally formed, the RDRC was focused on economic and commercial development. During the recession, when local social services organizations pulled out of Rockaway, RDRC began to offer other social services, Alexander said. Shortly before Hurricane Sandy hit, the organization’s board made the decision to return to its original mission of revitalizing the local economy. Alexander, in a presentation before Community Board 14 on Tuesday, said RDRC is working on several projects besides the transit hub and plaza which could provide open spaces that to host concessions, activities and even a farmer’s market during the warm weather months. Another project is the Healing

Ideally, the farm will be able to provide other food for the community in case of another disaster. “When you talk about Sandy and resiliency, food resiliency is one of the most important factors we learned,” Alexander said. “Only the corner stores were open and the only fresh food went bad after a couple of days.” Eventually, the RDRC will be housed in its Renaissance Center, which the group purchased in 2001. They’re currently in Phase 2 of construction. The plan for the facility is to rent out the bottom floor at market rate and reserve either the second or third floor for start-ups, Alexander said. It will also feature a Time Warner Cable Learning Lab which comprises 16 work stations with high-end computers for use by the local community. for homeowners impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Stand Up for Rockaway will raise funds for SBP to serve local residents in Rockaway, Queens who own their homes but lack the financial resources to rebuild on their own. SBP and its local affiliate, Friends of Rockaway, have rebuilt 47 homes in Rockaway, 55 in Staten Island and 4 in Monmouth County, New Jersery since 2013, but two years after Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast, 100 Rockaway families remain on its waiting list. Seth Herzog, a stand up comedian who regularly appears on Comedy Central and VH-1, will host the comedy show to help the cause. The benefit show will feature sets by stand up comedians Christian Finnegan, Damien Lemon, Dan Soder, Michelle Wolf and a performance by critically acclaimed folk-fusion group The Amigos Band. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. at The Bell House, located at 149 7th Street in Brooklyn, with doors opening at 7 p.m. When local fans and entertainers come together to help rebuild homes and lives, fellow New Yorkers are able to return home sooner and Sandyimpacted communities come one step closer to a fully recovery, say supporters. there will be public announcements and meetings planned “soon.” *** One item that got tweeted quite a bit this week: Only 142 days until the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade. *** Looking for something to do on Saturday? Well, mosey on over to Beach 94th Street for the festival being run by the Rockaway Beach Merchants Association. There will be live bands, pumpkin painting, a martial arts exhibition by CROM, and all sorts of other fun. It’s the group’s first go at a fest – show them some support ! *** If you passed the Rockaway Times on Monday (114-04 Beach Channel Drive) you saw trucks and trailers all over the street. A movie, Freeheld, with Julianne Moore, Steve Carell and Ellen Page was being filmed with scenes shot at Waterview Car Care. The crew came by the Rockaway Times lot for lunch. *** Got a column inside you? Maybe something with a fall or winter theme (skiing? Ice sculpture? Holiday planning?) Our great surfing and fishing columns (Alex Karinsky and Matt Whalen) might soon head south for a bit and only visit us occasionally so here’s a chance to fill the void. Send your ideas to editor@ rockawaytimes.com. Thanks!

Ok, we’re getting crazy for one week only and throwing a wrinkle into the Rockaway Word Search which has proven to be very popular. This week, we’re asking those who find the missing Rockaway business, to drop off their puzzle at the Channel Drive Shell gas station on Beach 59th street. Write your name, phone number, and/or email address on the puzzle and drop it in the box on the counter inside. (Hey, get some gas or a car wash while you’re there!). And as they say on game shows, wait, there’s more! We’ll pick the $100 winner our of the box and then pick 5 more entries to win Rockaway Times t-shirts. Say hello to Brad at the Shell station, too! *** Last week’s Word Search missing business was Paul’s Bike Shop. Sally McVeigh came across the finish line first with Kelley Brooke just seconds behind. And the name we pulled out of the hat for the Rockaway Times Tshirt was….Valerie Dare. The T is on

*** John Edwards wants the boardwalk finished now. Not in four years. He rejects the idea that portions of the boardwalk which survived the storm need to be replaced. Build new where needed, that’s it. And get the work crews moving! He’s started an online petition at Ipetitions.com. Go there and search “boardwalk” and you’ll be able to sign on. *** Count us among the suspicious. Work crews were hired to remove tanks from the grounds of the Neponsit Healthcare facility. We were told the company hired was told to remove four oil tanks but they could only find three. Someone theorized that the fourth tank was simply never put in the ground. In any case, we remember how fast they shut the place down. We don’t want The City to pull another fast one. *** Sand replenishment has begun at Riis Park. It will be restored to its pre-Sandy condition, according to NPS and the Army Corps of Engineers. The job should take about two weeks. The Fort Tilden area will remain an open door for flood waters. As for the Reformulation Study – the big one that is supposed to consider beach an bayside protection (including massive gates to stop flood waters) – it’s ongoing. We hear

Ferry Guy Sounds Off Again

Dear Editor: As a follow up to my letter on ways in which to fund ferry service for the Rockaways, I share the following facts: There has been a great deal of discussion about the FREE Staten Island ferry and how the subsidy is now $100 million. However, there is a little known fact that 1/3 of the money for this subsidy is New York State budget money. Since Rockaway has approximately 1/4 the population of Staten Island then we should be able to receive 1/4 of the State funds which would more than cover the annual cost of th Rockaway ferry. If our State Representatives could get their Rockaway constituents the State funds alone, we could secure a seven day per week ferry service. In the Federal Highway Administration program, Map-21 Ferry Boat Formula Program I quote the following: “The operating authority and the amount of fares charged for passage on such ferry shall be under the control of the State or other public entity, and all revenues derived shall be applied to actual and necessary costs of operation, maintenance, and repair, debt service, negotiated management fees, and, in the case of privately operated toll ferry, for a reasonable rate of return”. The quote basically means we can use the “Weiner Money”-- $15 million -- for a subsidy. It is extremely discouraging to provide the information (including the docket number on the “Weiner Money”) o Borough President Melinda Katz almost one year ago and yet have no one from her office even follows up on the information. The Rockaway ferry subsidy breaks down to .007%

of the NYC budget. If our elected officials can’t obtain the above mentioned funds for Rockaway residents-- a small percentage of an overall $9 Billion budget- then maybe they should find a new line of work. Again, while funding for the Rockaway ferry was not put into the NYC budget, Staten Island received an additional $10 million for expanded ferry service! Think about it- Queens has five times the population of Staten Island, yet our elected officials do not have the political muscle to secure our fair share of funding. It is time for all our elected officials to put down the cameras, stop the speeches, stop the finger pointing and work together to get the job done. After all-- isn’t that a no brainer! Joe Hartigan

Smarts Phones For Dummies

Dear Editor, (Re The Beef Chip & Team Cyclops) I wholeheartedly agree with the Beef Chip article regarding the new plague that has overcome our country, “SMARTIS PHONEITUS”. Fortunately, I have not yet contracted this awful plague due to my age. I am unable to read any text messages without my glasses; and of course I don’t want to show my age by putting on my readers, so I rarely read them. In addition, my fingers are too fat to text. I usually hit the wrong letters so my text doesn’t make sense. Due to this SMARTIS PHONEITUS PLAGUE Hospital Emergency Rooms all over the country are experiencing an increase of accidents due to individuals paying more attention to their devices then their environment.

Hey ladies put down those phones and stare at those adorable little babies in the carriage! Talk to them rather than your cell phone! My children, unfortunately, are showing strong signs of “SMARTIS PHONEITUS”, they are sending me a text knowing full well it would be hours before I read it. My replies are delayed and stupid. This does not qualify as a telephone call to mom!! Susan Brady

Build It Back: Atrocious

Dear Editor: I’m sure that many of you are “so over” hearing Sandy stories. But frankly folks, I ask you flash your eyes on Build-It-Back for a second. While government giving the average citizen “the screw” isn’t a new story, it does strike a very raw nerve here. 93 percent of homeowners won’t get help for at least a few years, on a program City Hall promised will help “all get home”. Being privy to a lot of individual situations, I can vouch not one homeowner has been treated the same as their neighbor, except we’ve all been scrutinized to the point of exhaus-

tion, some bankrupt in the process. On scrutiny, BIB has been asking for notarized receipts from homeowners- a step the IRS doesn’t demand! While Councilman Eric Urlich has requested an audit on BiB, I doubt those responsible, will ever be held culpable. Not a dig on Urlich, but on City Hall - both administrations. I’m fully aware of the naysayers rant “Live by Water, Live in Peril”, but I’d like to remind all that the coastal communities are tax-payers, many pay very high insurance rates as a condition of our mortgage. And yeah, by the way, most of our community have either pulled people out of a fire, educated your children, taken a bullet for their community, or been seriously hurt hauling your garbage from your home. Many have shields in their wallets, but are not protected by the city they serve. In short, BiB, while they’ve done some good lately, are still doing an atrocious job. Oh and incidentally, FEMA is asking Sandy Survivors for money back and shutting down many of it’s existing programs (ie. Rent Assistance). Based on FEMA’s website, KATRINA programs like Road Home are still being funded. While I could rant on about FEMA too, the one-two strike of FEMA and BiB is unfair to the point of criminality. The Wrong Way Queens has an epically bad transit system. People are forced into cars because it can take two hours to get from one part of Queens to another by public transportation. Two hours. One way. And that’s staying in Queens. Things might even get slower as the mayor’s Vision Zero gets implemented forcing buses and cars to slow to 25 mph. This week Friends of the Queensway and a nonprofit, the Trust for Public Land, unveiled plans for converting 3.5 miles of abandoned rail line into a park. Aided by hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money, they produced some nice pictures of a linear park. Former City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said, “It’s like the High Line on steroids.” Except it’s not. The High Line is in Manhattan. And is a great draw for tourists who are already in Manhattan. The Queensway won’t draw tourists for the same reason you can’t go anywhere in Queens: you can’t get there. Advocates say the Queensway will draw 250,000 new visitors a year. Even this wildly optimistic number amounts to nothing. 700 people a day spread out along 3.5 miles of elevated park won’t do anything for local economies. Benepe’s line about the High Line on steroids? Well, he’s kind of full of it. The High Line attracts 4 million people a year. The Queensway, by advocates’ own projections, would draw a tiny fraction of the High Line numbers. Amidst the pretty pictures and hopeful

language of “connecting neighborhoods” the Queensway plan reveals itself as an impractical piein-the-sky plan. Nowhere to be found is a serious look at transit challenges in Queens. The best the plan can do is say that pedestrians and bike riders would be safer at some intersections. That’s the crux of the Queensway folly. The proposed park would remove a viable transit option; the High Line did no such thing. The Queensway got a nice writeup in the New York Times but the take away line from the article is this: It is far from clear whether the Queensway will come to fruition. In another few weeks another study will be presented. The Urban Studies Department at Queens College has been looking at the abandoned rail line, too. We expect this study to consider something the Queensway people neglected: how to move people through Queens. It’s usually instructive to consider who conducts a study and its findings. The Trust for Public Land looks to “create parks.” No surprise their studies support their goal. We expect the Queens College study to be less flowery.

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

The 2014 hurricane season has been somewhat unremarkable thus far with only 7 named storms forming in the Atlantic (Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Eduoard, Fay and Gonzalo), all of which have thankfully tracked far from our coastal area here in Broad Channel. Recently there has been a lot of media coverage of the city’s Build It Back Program citing the fact that 90 percent of the 14,000 submitted applications for assistance are still awaiting assistance. Even worse is the fact that an additional 6.000 applications either withdrew or are no longer responding to the city. CBS and Fox5 coverage cit-

One of our neighbors in town was going through a bad period some time ago. Realizing that everyone has daily scary and difficult things to muddle through she didn’t think that anyone needed to hear about her problems but she did begin to wonder to herself, “What would happen if I committed to spend every day looking for at least one beautiful thing? Would that change the way I looked at the world?” Well she tried doing just that and her Wordpress blog “One Beautiful Thing” (OBT) was born. If you get a chance, visit Donna Kramer’s blog at http://myobt. wordpress.com. If nothing else, it will provide you with a temporary escape to an environment totally divorced from our daily media maelstrom of ebola, terrorism, mid-east war, politics, and Kim Kardashian! Last, but certainly not least, it’s great to see our neighbor and friend over on Noel Road, Gwen O’Toole, recovering nicely from her recent medical procedure. Playground at P.S. 256 to Reopen to Students

Fire Strikes at Homeless Shelter By Bianca Fortis

Sandy by the communities he represents, particularly the special needs students of P.S. 256. According to the SCA, repairs are planned for the school, including the installation of new boilers, flood mitigation measures and the repairs to the playground. These plans are currently being designed and expected to be submitted by December, which will be followed by the contract bidding process and then the start of work at the school. However, in conversations with the Assemblyman, SCA President & C.E.O. Lorraine Grillo has agreed to have her agency fill in the sinkhole and place matting over the site to allow students to use the playground while the SCA is planning future, more permanent repairs. This temporary work is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. “Superstorm Sandy taught us that we have a special responsibility to provide for our children as we work to rebuild and recover, Goldfeder said. “These temporary repairs at P.S. 256 will go a long way in returning a sense of normalcy to our children and families.

tion center and was opened with little input from the community. It has 155 units and houses only adult families – more than 300 people. Residents say Rockaway is an inappropriate place for a shelter because the peninsula has few employments opportunities, inadequate transit and is still struggling after Hurricane Sandy. And last month there were several arrests of individuals who reside at the shelter, according to District 23 Transit Police and the 100th Precinct. Most of the arrests were for transit violations, specifically theft of service when individuals would jump the turnstile to enter the nearby subway station.

There were no injuries reported after a two-alarm fire broke out at the new homeless shelter Tuesday evening. The fire started at about 5:07 p.m. on the sixth floor of the shelter, according to the FDNY. At about 5:13 p.m., a second alarm rang. A cause of the fire was not immediately available. About 106 firefighters responded to the scene, and the fire was under control by 5:54 p.m., the FDNY said. The shelter, which opened over the summer, has been a major point of controversy for the surrounding community. It is located at the site of the former Daytop Village drug rehabilita-

After Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder sent a letter to Dept. of Education (DOE) Chancellor Carmen FariĂąa requesting immediate repairs to a sinkhole that formed under the playground at P.S. 256, the NYC School Construction Authority has agreed to make temporary repairs to the site that will fill in the sinkhole and allow students to once again use the playground. “Although permanent repairs are still necessary, I commend Lorraine Grillo and the School Construction Authority’s decision to step up and find a temporary solution that will reopen the playground while permanent repairs are planned,â€? Goldfeder said. “It has been almost two years since Sandy and our children deserve to enjoy their playground.â€? In August, the Assemblyman wrote to Chancellor FariĂąa to request that the department expedite repairs to a large sinkhole that formed directly underneath the playground equipment at P.S. 256 as a result of Superstorm Sandy. In his initial letter, Goldfeder emphasized the many challenges faced during Superstorm

The Other Rules Last week’s column was a little serious. This week I am sharing some other surfing rules, but these mostly poke fun at ourselves, or are simple observations over time. Here’s hoping you get a laugh out of a few of these from Surfing Magazine. The “Other” Surfing Rules Rule # 20: If you take off while looking at the guy who’ s on the wave, he owns your next two waves. Rule # 22: If you’re a beginner, just be aware that not everyone cares that you stood up for the first time. Rule # 45: There’s always someone gnarlier than you just up the beach. Rule # 47: If you go back to the first spot you checked, you have to paddle out.

Rule # 86: Never make a celI phone call from a surf spot; no matter who you’re calling Rule # 97: She’s not as impressed as you think Rule # 111: The grumpiest guy always gets the wave of the day Rule # 148: There’s nothing rude about catching a wave when someone’s telling a story. Rule # 194: It’s at least twice as good as it looks on the surfcam. Rule # 200: If you’re the only guy in the lineup with a hood on, go in. Rule # 232: If there are more than 2 stand up paddlers (SUP) in the lineup, they must joust until there is just one. Rule # 233: Complimenting a stranger’s surfing has no conceiv-

able downside. Rule # 238: It’s always a half hour later than it is to the guy who asks for the time. Rule # 324: If you don’t have any scars from surfing, then you haven’t tried hard enough. Rule # 421: If you really want to guarantee a swell, commit to a non-surf engagement 2 weeks ahead of time. Rule # 433: Surf films are the only movies you’re allowed to watch twice in a row. Rule # 458: The song you sing when you suit up will dictate your session. Rule # 465: Never tell anyone you’re waking up early. Rule # 491: If you describe your last tube as an “in ‘n’ out”, it wasn’t any good. Rule # 499: Driving around in your wetsuit is bad luck. Rule # 523: You surf 50 percent better in a brand-new wetsuit.

Rule # 535: Never get out of the water before the guy with the car keys. Rule # 545: The older you get the easier it is to go in on a shitty wave. Rule # 546: Never go in on a shitty wave. Rule # 577: Sorry, there’s no such thing as a “magic” longboard. Rule # 578: Don’t trust a surf shop without any photos of their local break going off. Rule # 698: If you fall while running into the water, go back and start over. Rule # 699: Hooting at a surf movie is a rite of passage. So is heckling. Rule # 787: The colder the water, the friendlier the lineup. Rule # 844: Expect to get burned twice as much if you wear your reef booties. Rule # 849: Don’t start a conversation if you are wearing ear-plugs. Rule # 867: More accessories = less respect.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need

Rockaway Is More Than One Place Since I began my acting career as a writer for The Rockaway Times, I continually refer to “Rockaway” as The Rockaway Peninsula, or as The Eleven neighborhoods of the Rockaways. I always try to emphasize that “Rockaway” is not just another neighborhood such as Bay Ridge, Forest Hills or Tribeca, but we are ELEVEN of those Bay Ridges or Tribecas or Astorias. Each distinct and unique in its own way. I was recently contacted by a reporter who asked me what my thoughts were about the potential $480 million for the Rockaway Beach boardwalk. Most of his questions were the usual: Was I happy about the news, where do I think it should be spent? And so on. One question he asked kind of

opened my eyes a bit! He asked how I felt that many throughout the rest of the City and some in City Hall thought that “Rockaway” was getting too much money for its boardwalk now that the high number of $480 million has been revealed. I explained to him that this would be the natural response from those who perceive “Rockaway” to be just another neighborhood. I pointed out that our boardwalk, the one to potentially be rebuilt for $480 million, was not in “Rockaway.” It actually runs through the distinct and unique New York City neighborhoods of Far Rockaway, Edgemere, Arverne, Rockaway Beach, Rockaway Park and depending who you ask, a block or two in Belle Harbor, all on the Rockaway Peninsula! We need to stop allowing our

“confiscated” the motorcycle and stated that it was “against the rules and regulations.” • A man faked mental illness to escape jail, was sent to an asylum and has been trying since to convince doctors he’s sane. He’s been diagnosed a psychopath ’cause in part, “Faking mental illness to get out of a prison sentence is exactly the kind of manipulative act you’d expect of a psychopath.” • Scientific studies (who paid for this one!) show that the state of Kansas is actually flatter than a pancake. • Some inmates in Greenland hold the keys of their own cells, may leave the premises during the day to go to work/school and are even allowed to go hunting with rifles to shoot birds and seals.

• The word “queue” is the only word in the English language that is still pronounced the same way when the last four letters are removed. • Of all the words in the English language, the word ‘set’ has the most definitions. • “Almost” is the longest word in the English language with all the letters in alphabetical order. • “Rhythm” is the longest English word without a vowel. (That’s when they pull that “sometimes y and w” nonsense on you) • The longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds (not counting McNuggets trying to escape) • To annoy his captors, an American POW in North Korea would pretend every day that he was riding around on an invisible motorcycle until eventually, his captors

mighty collection of distinct and unique neighborhoods on the Rockaway Peninsula from constantly being referred to as “just another neighborhood.” Perhaps it’s time we, on The Rockaway Peninsula, petition The City of NY or The State of NY to become “The Fifth and a half Borough!” Maybe then we’ll no longer be the Rodney Dangerfield of NYC

(sorry folks, “Redheaded stepchild” has been putting the politically correct crowd on edge) “County Rockaway” It has a nice ring to it!

Be Well, Be Happy Tough Times for Teens

By Christine Walker Our adolescent years can be a mixed bag of upheavals and many circumstances of displacement can be felt by an individual at this age. I can recall this time in my own life of wanting to feel secure in myself and be trusting of others, yet so socially self- conscious and being suspicious of the people in a world that I thought was supposed to be my playground. It was scary and painful to recognize that I was coming to a point in my life where I was to start taking care of myself, yet had little to go on regarding how I was to begin that monumental task. Something we all need to realize is that the brain during these years is malleable and is still developing well into our twenties. During our adolescent years, the frontal lobes (the seat of language and reason) are still being shaped and tends to leave the amygdala (the seat of emotions) in charge. As Sheryl Fienstein, author of “The Secrets of the Teenage Brain”, puts it “Teens are navigating a cerebral hurricane without a compass.” I feel we are at an important crossroads. What is often overlooked in this young population is the cultivation of social emotional learning (SEL) skills including stress man-

agement, emotional regulation, selfappreciation, confidence and strong peer relationships. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) highlights: • Self-awareness • Self-management • Social awareness • Relationship skills • Responsible decision-making These competencies are at the core of success to be incorporated into a young adult’s life to help them deal with traumas and challenges that could lead to struggle with such issues as depression, anxiety and substance abuse, irresponsible behaviors and bullying. There are various ways for teens to navigate this very impressionable time in their formative development. Self development is difficult in an environment that encourages these impressionable people to be driven academically and extra-curricularly, sometimes without concern for individual self care. Traditionally, activities such as organized and independent artistic endeavors such as music, theatre and the arts and sports such as martial arts including jiu jitsu, tai chi and karate are used to expose them to developing personal behavioral skills.

A less traditional discipline that is gaining more widespread popularity for adults and now adolescents as well, is the practice of yoga. As a yoga educator, I have witnessed many positive transformations enabled by yoga practice. Scientific studies at the Harvard Medical School in conjunction with research at the Kripalu Institute for Extraordinary Living in Massachusetts has shown that a yoga curriculum reaching students in school grades 7-12 has reliably improved resilience and helps prevent negative emotional states, decreases anxiety and stress and improves the ability to self regulate when practiced regularly. Students of yoga learn to cope by including instruction in breathwork, focus , attention,

mindfulness and experiential activities such as warm ups, yoga poses and integration of rest, calming and relaxation. All of these tools are encompassed in a class based on yoga to provide positive cognitive and emotional development. Left to their own devices, teens often go astray. Parents and educators need to be available to supervise and provide support and encouragement to enable teens to manage stress throughout their lives. Christine Walker, LMT, TYT Christine Walker teaches Teen Yoga at the Ocean Bliss Yoga Studio Wednesdays 5:30-6:30 and for the Millenium After School Program at PS 114 for middle school students.

What’s Going On At Neponsit Facility? Tanks Removed From Grounds

By Bianca Fortis Underground fuel tanks were removed from the old Neponsit Health Care Center last week. According to the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), which manages the property, the tanks were removed according to EPA regulations. “The tanks were drained, cleaned and properly discarded,” an HHC spokesperson said on Tuesday. “There are no current plans for the use of the campus.” A worker on the grounds last week said a company was hired to remove four tanks but said they’d only found three. He couldn’t say why the order to remove the tanks had been issued. In April, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and City Councilman Eric Ulrich met with HHC and

EDC (Economic Development Corp) officials to begin discussions about what might be done with the building and property that sits oceanfront adjacent to Riis Park. At the time HHC issued a statement that they had “no plans” for the property and there was no mention of removing fuel tanks or anything of the kind. Some locals were concerned with the recent excavating. One man, watching the heavy equipment dig in search of the tanks, recalled the way the city suddenly shuttered the facility sixteen years ago. “Sometimes they don’t ask, they just do,” he said. He was referring to a notorious incident when the facility, located at 149-25 Rockaway Beach Blvd, was closed by the City which said the building was in danger of collapsing. At the time, hundreds of patients were forced to evac-

uate in the middle of the night. Later, engineers and the courts said the move was unnecessary and harmful. Now in 2014, HHC says it does not have any plans for the 6-acre property. The agency has continued to pay for security and maintenance for the facility, despite it being vacant for the last 16 years. The annual costs for security and maintenance total more than a quarter of a million dollars per year. The Rockaway Times asked the HHC why remove the tanks NOW? The facility has lain fallow for all these years so what’s behind the decision to act now? The HHC press office said they would check on that and get back but did not by press time.

Rockaway School Wins City-Wide Contest

Ask the Doc By Peter Galvin, MD A number of readers have written in asking about when they should have routine screening tests. Each of us has an innate, unchangeable factor that helps to determine the answer to this – our genetic makeup, also known as our family history. For example, how many people in their twenties ever think about their own mortality? The answer is almost none but heart attacks do rarely occur in this age group. Assuming those who do have a heart attack in their 20’s are not abusing drugs like pot or cocaine or are addicted to energy drinks like Red Bull it is often found that they have a genetic condition that causes a very low HDL, also known as good cholesterol. Therefore it is usually advisable to start with a check-up and blood test in your twenties to establish a baseline. Thereafter screenings are done based upon those baseline results until somewhere in the mid to late 40’s when an annual checkup with blood work is a good idea. It is usually recommended to start colonoscopy screening at age 50 however for someone with a family history of colon cancer those screenings may start at age 40 or earlier. The recommendations for screening mammography are similar and again screening should start much earlier with a family history of breast cancer. As for screening for heart disease the recommendations are much more varied. A family history of heart disease is only 1 factor that determines screening. Other factors like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol etc. are also considered. In the absence of symptoms and no history of heart disease a routine screening EKG is of little predictive value in deter-

mining the risk of heart disease. Anyone with multiple risk factors should be referred to a cardiologist for stress testing even if they are still in their 30’s or 40’s. Another reader asked how much sleep should one generally get? While there is no set answer to this it is usually recommended that sleep time between 6 to 8 hours a day is sufficient. More for children and younger people, less for older adults. Sleep time should include a significant amount of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. When in the REM stage of sleep we dream. Lack of REM sleep, frequent awakenings, sleep apnea and alcohol and certain drugs can all affect the amount of quality sleep that we get. I will leave sleep apnea for another column. The information in this column is not intended as specific recommendations, only general guidelines. You should always discuss your personal medical issues with your physician. This column is published biweekly. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com. Please keep your questions and comments coming.

Thank you for shining a light on our frequently forgotten Far Rockaway.” At the assembly the Council of School Supervisors & Administrators announced it would provide an additional $5,000 to be used for classroom books. Catherine Molyneux, the school’s attendance coordinator, said she was proud of the students for working so hard. “You know we went through so much,” she said about the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. “I’m always amazed by how they were able to think out of the box. That’s what makes P.S. 43 so special – we think outside of the box.”

By Bianca Fortis A Rockaway school will be putting $20,000 to good use after it won a city-wide contest sponsored by the MCU credit union. PS 43 won the grand prize, $10,000, from MCU for a threeminute video four students cre-

weather implores the judges: “Far Rockaway has always been considered a lost part of the city. Please help us restore our school to its pre-Sandy conditions.” The videos were evaluated based on the school’s need, the spirit of collaboration demonstrated on the video, the project’s creativity and how the project will help strengthen the school community. Sterling Roberson, a Vice President at the United Federation of Teachers, said the UFT was so impressed by the winning video, that the organization decided to match the original award with another $10,000. The four students, who are now in high school, returned to the “School by the Sea” Friday morning for an assembly during which the award was presented. “It’s not easy

Report Details Failures of ‘Build it Back’ Program The New York City Department of Investigation announced last week that it identified a number of shortcomings in the Build it Back program’s initial launch and administration, including: a multi-layered and confusing application process, poor communications with applicants, inefficient processing of applications, inadequate coordination among vendors and delays in executing construction agreements. DOI initiated its monitorship in November 2013 to investigate and deter potential fraud, waste or abuse by City employees, contractors and beneficiaries. After major delays were identified, DOI worked with the Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations to identify the cause of the delays and ensure remedial action and greater efficiency in the program. As part of that monitoring program, DOI found that a confusing, multi-layered application process, among other issues, have caused bottlenecks that delayed the application process and critical assistance from reaching homeowners. BIB’s Single Family program, for

persons residing in one- to fourunit structures, received more than 20,000 applications from homeowners in need of assistance, and as of early September, over 6,000 applications had been withdrawn or become unresponsive, and of the approximately 14,000 remaining applications, more than 90% have yet to receive any assistance. “Build it Back is an essential program that has not lived up to its full mandate with thousands of eligible homeowners who were victims of Hurricane Sandy still waiting to get assistance,” DOI Commissioner Mark G. Peters said. “DOI’s Report exposes bottlenecks and recommends some remedies to get the program working more efficiently.” The DOI has made several recommendations that strengthen and improve the process, which HRO has begun to implement. Biking Across America Windy Enchantment

By Shane Shackleford New Mexico, home of the Rio Grande, Billy the Kid, one of the world’s largest hot air balloon festivals, and some of the worst head winds I have ever had to experience as a cyclist. Every state has tested us in some way, but New Mexico with its 35 mile an hour head winds can kiss my green chilis. Other than that, New Mexico has an enchantment that sings with every cold morning, on into rolling

mountains surrounded by silence that makes you feel at home on the road. We have been on the road for 43 days now and it has been us three amigos day in and day out. So at times it turns into us three egos. We fight, but like brothers, we realize we cannot do it as easily if we split up the band. So here is to bicycling in the free world, and making it out of New Mexico and into Arizona. 2634 miles complete.

ROCKAWAY OL’ TIMES By Emil R. Lucev Sr. & daughter, Katie Lucev (In light of the recent emails my Dad has received with inquiries about the history of Chaffee’s Tent City in Rockaway Beach, NY… here you go!) Camp Chaffee, a city of canvas tents. In The Rockaway’s shortly after the twentieth century began, various tent cities began to sprout up from the east end in Edgemere and westward towards the point of our peninsula. A short distance to the west of the midpoint in Rockaway Beach is a location called Seaside; that is where the largest of the camps were built and operated by Frank C. Chaffee. Mr. Chaffee was a local tent and sail maker. He also dealt in awnings, draperies and shades. His business establishment was located on the northwest corner of Bch. 88th street (Thomas street). Opening in 1902 with about 50 tents the camp grew to almost 400 campsites with running water, gas and lamps for lighting. Showers and sanitation facilities were communal. The rental rates were for the day, week or season. The monthly rate was $20 dollars and the seasonal rates ran from $60-$254 dollars.

Tents could accommodate from 2 to 8 persons. The dimensions were given as 9’x 12’, 11’x 15’ or 12’x 18’. At the center of the site stood a small hotel and pavilion that contained a restaurant, dinning room, meeting room and a bowling alley. Dancing and many other social events were held there as well. The property was 875’ x 532’ and located south of Rockaway Beach Boulevard to the ocean shore between Bch. 106th street (Centre Avenue) and Bch. 109th street (Thetis Avenue). There were three bathhouses near the high water mark on the beach. They were named West End Baths, The Ocean Breeze Baths & Kreuger’s Sea Beach House. Many of the campsites were decorated with seashell gardens all around and given special names by the tenants. Other than excitement caused by a fire or two and damages from the wind and rainstorms, the tent life was very peaceful. The mornings were chilly on the beach until the sun came up. Devastating news broke out in 1910. It appeared the property only rented by Mr. Chaffee, was sold to the Queens Beach Company (a local partnership) for $250 thousand dollars by a pair of sis-

ters named Mrs. Ward and a Mrs. Judson. It was rumored that a new amusement park and boardwalk would be built in the same style as Dreamland Park & Luna Park in Coney Island. However, the tent city went on until 1913 and during that year it was announced that the camp would finally close its flaps for good. The Queens Beach Company decided to get into the more lucrative and snowballing wooden bungalow business. In the years that followed, other tent camps slowly disappeared and were replaced by wooden bungalows of all shapes and sizes. During the final years of Chaffee’s Tent City there were talks of building a park at the west end, the building of Cross Bay Rd. (Cross Bay Blvd.) and Jamaica Bay to become a port fizzled because the arrival of income tax hit in 1913 and nobody wanted to invest.

Interesting concerns surrounded the talks of a new amusement park to be built here in The Rockaways. There was not a word from any of the other amusement park owners in the Rockaways. George C. Tilyou owner of Steeplechase Park, L.A. Thompson owner of Thompson Park & Nels Rasmusson owner of Ferris Park were silent. Did they protest quietly !?!? This week’s postcard is marked August 21st, 1907 and was published by Chubbuck’s Drugstore located on Hammel’s Avenue, Rockaway Beach (Bch. 86th street). If memory serves me correctly, the Tent City Hotel & Pavilion became Fitzgerald’s in later years. Finally in 1982 the building was destroyed by fire. There is an idea afoot to once again build a new Tent City/Camp in The Rockaway’s. What’s your opinion ???

Say you saw it in the Rockaway Times!

AHOY ROCKAWAY ! Water Temperature: 65*F- entrance to N.Y. harbor The wind was blowing strong this week keeping many anglers at home or in port. Saturday’s rainy weather was no help to anglers trying their luck either. While the Rockaway peninsula welcomes the return of Autumn for 2014, Sunday’s weather felt more like “Summer” with warm temperatures being reached by midday. Anglers and non-anglers, don’t forget to take advantage of the current weather “observations” (air temperature, wind speed, and wind direction) as well as extended forecast available 24/7 for free on line at rockawaytimes.com (in the upper right hand corner). Sunday’s water clarity was surprising good in the back bays even after Saturday’s rain run off. There’s still plenty of bait fish in the back bays and around the docks. Porgies will be moving out as the fall season moves ahead and the black fish (Tautog) move in. I spoke with a few local fisherman down at the dock who were going for striped bass. The conversation soon turned to strictly striped bass and the fishermen felt that the recent fall fishing cycles were still a bit “OFF” due to the recent storm (we don’t need to hear her name anymore) from two Octobers ago. On the outside: Bernie Matzen of Oceanside has some exciting news this week, Bern reports that as of Friday their is striped bass action on the outside of Debs inlet. Striped bass were taken up at 30” by trolling spoons and using bunker in 40 feet of water. There are reports of bunker schools in the area outside of the inlet. The striped bass were taken underneath the bunker schools. Jamaica bay and the outside: We gave Tom’s Wave service

station/bait & tackle on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park a call today, Tom reports that Sunday was a very good day for local black fishing in the area. The shop was very busy dispensing a LOT of green crabs as anglers were having a blast at luring out and catching the black fish that were hiding out in the bay. Tom described Sunday’s black fishing action near B.C.H.S. as “constant!” Tom mentioned that there is more good news of striped bass showing up in the surf off of the beach. The striped bass are accepting offers of clam as bait. Big Ron’s bait and tackle in Howard Beach: We spoke with Captain Ron this morning and he tells us that there is lots of black fish action in the bay but, as you might expect, there are plenty of throw backs as the season just opened. Ron said that a few striped bass were taken locally. Ron said that bass eels are now in as the seasonal bass action in the back is expected to increase soon. Please remember to be a good sportsman and release any “out of season”, or undersized fish. That’s it anglers, good luck as the fall fishing season begins...

Exhibit Showcases Beauty of Jamaica Bay By Bianca Fortis Because it was so polluted, Jamaica Bay was once colloquially referred to as “Garbage Bay” –but a new local art exhibit aims to show how far the restoration of the Bay has come. “People are surprised by how beautiful it is,” Dan Hendricks, the curator of “Hidden in Plain Sight: The Wonders of Jamaica Bay,” said. “We want to start a real dialogue and get people inspired.” The exhibit, on display at the Resorts World Casino, features work by Hendricks as well as two nature and wildlife photographers. Hendricks is the producer and co-director of “Jamaica Bay Lives,” a documentary about the bay, its diversity and how it was impacted by Hurricane Sandy. He said he fell in love with the

Bay several years ago and believes the bay “never quite got its due.” Charles Markis, the site manager for the Wildlife Refuge at Jamaica Bay said the Gateway National Recreation Area offers visitors 18,000 acres of open space – nature set against the backdrop of an urban jungle. “People can’t believe they’re in New York City,” he said. “They’re just amazed. The exhibit features some of Hendricks’ own moving images from the documentary. It also features photographs from Don Riepe, a Broad Channel resident, who has been photographing the bay for 30 years. Riepe, who is the NY Chapter Director of the American Littoral Society as well as the co-chair of the Jamaica Bay Task Force, has been published in Scientific American, National Wildlife

and the New York Times. Riepe said New York City contains greater diversity than even some of the more pristine ecosystems upstate. “I hope it shows people how beautiful places in Brooklyn and Queens are,” he said. The show also features photos from Swiss photographer François Portmann, who has been published in several magazines including Outside, Skiing and National Parks Conservation. Part I of the exhibit, which just opened is titled “Life On, Above and in the Bay,” and features images such as fledgling osprey juxtaposed in front of Kennedy Airport as well as paddle boarders. Part II, “The Birds of Jamaica Bay,” will open in December and

focuses on the 333 species of birds that exist in the ecosystem. Finally, Part III, “Finding Balance: The Interplay of Nature and the City” will open in January 2015. Michelle Stoddart, the director of public relations and community development for Resorts World, explained that the Casino’s Red Wall Gallery is used to showcase local artists and the beauty of Queens. “We’re really happy to host the wildlife exhibit and expose our 24,000 visitors to the scenery that they can find in their backyard,” she said. She said local artists who would like to be considered for the gallery should contact the casino. Courtesy images from exhibit

Woodmere Lanes: Bowling Alley Fulfills Need for Fun By Katie McFadden

Have some free time to spare? How does the idea of going bowling strike you? Whether you’re looking for some family fun, a place to take a date or to get competitive in a league, Woodmere Lanes bowling alley in Five Towns can satisfy all your bowling needs. After the excitement of summer dies down, entertainment around the peninsula can be more difficult to come by. While there are no bowling alleys directly in the area, Woodmere Lanes is a short drive away, depending on what part of the peninsula you’re coming from and you don’t have to pay a toll to get there. Owners Nick Paxinos and John Ryan are hoping their bowling alley can be an entertainment destination for those not living immediately in Five Towns. “The area that is Rockaway Beach is untapped. There’s really not a lot of entertainment value right there. To go somewhere for bowling or other entertainment, you have to travel a little bit,” Paxinos said. Paxinos himself has a connection to the peninsula. “I grew up in Far Rockaway and frequented Rockaway Playland and the Dayton Towers area. Now my friends and I go back to Far

Rockaway every Thanksgiving and hand out turkey dinners at First Baptist Church. We’ve been doing that for the past 15 years. Last year we gave out about 200 dinners in Far Rockaway. The reason I keep going back to Rockaway is because that’s where I came from,” he said. Paxinos says he has Rockaway customers who choose Woodmere Lanes for parties like the Belle Harbor Yacht Club which holds an annual New Year’s celebration there. He hopes to catch the attention of even more residents who may not know about the entertainment venue that has been around for 53 years. Woodmere Lanes allows guests to enjoy an inexpensive outing at just $4.75 for a game of bowling between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. or $6.50 for a game after 6:00 p.m. plus $4.75 to rent shoes. For those who really want to get into the sport of bowling, Woodmere Lanes is also a big spot for leagues. Every day, games take place for men’s, women’s and mixed leagues and there is even a special league for those who live in Rockaway. “We’re an outlet for people that like to bowl in leagues. We offer discounts to league bowlers and I personally teach people how to bowl at no charge if they’re in a

league,” Paxinos, who has taught the Hewlett High School bowling team for 18 years, said. “I can’t make someone who is pretty good really good, but I can help make someone with little skill pretty good.” Paxinos encourages those from Rockaway to consider starting their own league teams and hopes that those involved in summer sports like volleyball and softball might consider taking bowling up as a winter activity. “There might be a group of guys in a softball league and when November comes around and playing softball isn’t as fun because of the weather, they can start a league for bowling and bowl until the end of March,” Paxinos said. “A group of 20 people can start their own league.” Woodmere Lanes doesn’t just offer bowling. What makes Woodmere Lanes unique is that it also serves as a party venue. Whether you want to hold a birthday, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, Sweet 16, fundraiser, holiday party, concert or whatever the occasion, the bowling alley’s event room, called The Backstage Night Club, can handle it all. The Backstage has a dance floor, a bar area and separate seating areas and can be customized to fit whatever is needed for a particular party. Woodmere Lanes offers kids bowl-

ing party packages that include bowling plus food, decorations, a DJ, games and more. However non-bowling parties in The Backstage are also an option. The kids’ parties can include a DJ, games, two hours of time on the dance floor and food. Special karaoke and glow-in-the-dark parties are also available for even more fun. “You can’t do that in many bowling centers I know of,” Paxinos said of the night club parties. The parties are handled by event coordinator Valerie Ryan who, Paxinos says, works with guests every step of the way when it comes to planning the event and making it a reality. Owners and organizers are always on site to make sure all goes smoothly during an event. “In my opinion, there is no place where you’ll be taken care of in the same way. There is a strong amount of quality that goes into our parties. Because of that, we don’t do as many parties as we could, but the ones we do, we give 100 percent,” Paxinos said. Woodmere Lanes is located at 948 Broadway in Woodmere and is open daily at 9:00 a.m. It closes at 1:00 a.m. Sunday-Thursdays and at 3:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information about bowling or to book a party, call 516-374-9870.

Snowflake League: Standings Get A Shuffle By Richard George Another week of Jamaica Bay Babe Ruth Snowflake Softball is in the books. This past week we held our first ‘Position Night’ week which made for each team to play whatever squad was closest to them in the standings. The meaning of this week was to shuffle up the standings and it did just that. The team cruising along in first place all season ultimately dropped to third. A team who started the season off 5-0 now finds themselves in a five game losing streak. And a team sitting on the outside of the playoff hunt got 2 wins against the last place team which catapulted them right back into the playoff chase. All in all, ‘Position Week’ did in fact shuffle up the standings. Whether we do it again, well that’s another story for another day. Definitely a hot topic next year during the Captain’s meeting at The Wharf.

The Monday night match-up during ‘Position Week’ saw the surging Sons of Pitches taking on a falling Black Sox squad. Apparently the wind was brutal during this friendly affair but in the end it was the Sons of Pitches taking both games. After starting the season 0-2, the Sons of Pitches changed their team name and have since won eight straight. On the flip side, the Black Sox saw themselves at 5-0 at one point and subsequently got their picture in the paper. Since that rise to fame and popularity, the Black Sox have lost 5 straight with a brutal schedule remaining. Some players just can’t take the heat of being in the tabloids in New York. Ask David Wright! The Tuesday night slobberknocker saw The Wire take on the winless Old Head. Going into the game with a winless record in eight attempts you would think that Old Head would bring their best with their

eye black and game faces on. Well… they didn’t. They didn’t even have a full squad. They might have played their tails off, but in the end, they lost both games and find themselves with an 0-10 record with the playoffs almost completely out of their reach. Not to mention, Gold Glove outfielder Cody Gauvard converted on an opposite field Yahtzee job for The Wire!!! Wednesday night saw the CoCommissioner’s go to battle again with what seems to be the millionth time they have played against each other. And what do you know, the result ended in another split. Here is some simple advice and on-field etiquette that I’d like to share with all players in this league. Do not borrow a bat from the other team. Use your own bats. Because if you use your own bats, you will score 15 unanswered runs with a 3-run walk-off homerun as an exclamation point.

Intentional walks are corny anyway. Thanks again!!! And last but certainly not least, Thursday night saw a rematch of last year’s championship game. Marine Park took its talents over two different bridges to finally replace the Ruffle Bar as the number one seed in this league. Both games were close but Marine Park escapes with a sweep and a spot at the top of the standings. Ruffle Bar falls to third and will play Marine Park again next week. ‘Position Week’ certainly can shuffle up the standings I guess. Standings after Week 5 (head to head and run differential separate seeds): 1: Marine Park (8-2) 2: Sons of Pitches (8-2) 3: Ruffle Bar (7-3) 4: Black Sox (5-5) 5: Crushas (4-6) 6: The Wire (4-6) 7: Rock Fam (4-6) 8: Old Head (0-10)
