Holiday Markets Galore

Small Business Saturday may have passed, but that shouldn’t be the only day to consider shopping local this holiday season, or year round. Keep the spirit of shopping small by frequenting your local businesses, or supporting those without storefronts at some of the many, and we mean many, upcoming holiday markets featuring unique and often homemade goods from local vendors. For small home-based businesses, the holiday season is primetime to make some money and to provide shoppers with one-of-a-kind gifts that can’t be found at the mall or on Amazon. Holiday boutiques have long been a part of Rockaway, with the big one at St. Camillus taking

place for several decades. However, with more and more creative locals throwing their hat into the small business ring, the market for markets has exploded, and the calendar for the holiday season is jam-packed with opportunities for vendors to sell and for locals to pick up items made with local flare and a personal touch. Local, Marybeth Galvin, owner of Betsy’s Bungalow, could be considered the holiday market queen. She’s bringing Betsy’s Bungalow to almost every holiday market in town this season and has been instrumental in helping get many of the markets off the ground for the first time. For Galvin, the markets are a good way for her to directly connect with her customer base at events that help connect the neighborhood. “The small business market is booming, it’s a true representation of what our community really is: friendly, creative, close-knit and about having a good time. Supporting local businesses has many unique benefits. Shopping at the pop-up markets allows the

chance for the customer to interact directly with the business owners and often product creators. The local vendors offer rare and personalized items that cannot be found in malls and chain stores,� Galvin said. Betsy’s Bungalow is known for offering unique painted wood items like beach signs, bottle openers and more. But for this holiday season, she’s offering something even more special. “Betsy’s Bungalow is featuring a Rockaway Beach ornament this season which is handmade, filled with authentic Rockaway sand and a piece of the wooden boardwalk that was destroyed in Hurricane Sandy, making it a limited edition,� Galvin said. Phil Groves, owner of the Far Rock Shop, which offers unique Far Rock-branded swag, from hats to t-shirts and more, agrees that the markets are a good way to connect with shoppers. “We love being out at the local markets, to engage with our fellow Rockawayites,� Groves said. “While our merchandise is not necessarily

geared towards the holidays, it is organically geared to the community. So with the holiday season being such a festive and spirited time, it allows for us to connect even more with our customers, and be in an environment full of cheer and positive vibes.� While selling their own unique products, both Galvin and Groves see the markets as a way to support all local small businesses and the community as a whole. “Shopping local this holiday season supports the Rockaway economy and helps our neighborhood to continue to thrive,� Galvin said. “At the markets, you also find other local artists and vendors, that do great work, that we also can support. Lighting Up For the Holidays Let there be light! The sky might be dark by 4:30 p.m., but Rockaway will soon be merry and bright as it rings in the holiday season. There are plenty of Christmas tree and menorah lightings coming up. The holiday season in Rockaway will kick off with the Beach 116th, Street Christmas tree lighting. The event, held near the firehouse on Beach 116th will start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 1. The night will include live entertainment, caroling and refreshments, plus the lighting of the tree and a visit from Santa Claus to get in those holiday pictures. While Hanukkah begins on December 2, the Beach 116th Street menorah lighting will take place on Wednesday, December 5 at 5:30 p.m. This event, held near Rockaway Beach Boulevard, will include singing, prayers led by local rabbis, music, treats and more. These events are sponsored by Assembly District Leader Lew Simon, Kathleen Laslie,

Mazzone Hardware and Rockawaves DJs. On Sunday, December 2, head over the Cross Bay Bridge to Broad Channel for their annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the Broad Channel Athletic Club (125 Cross Bay Blvd). Beginning at 5 p.m., the ceremo-

ny includes music and dance performances, caroling, hot cocoa and other goodies, plus a visit from Santa as the tree above the Clubhouse is lit for the season. The following weekend will bring more light on Saturday, December 8. The Rockaway Beach Civic Association hosts their annual tree lighting and holiday party from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., in front of the Peninsula Library on Beach 94th Street. The afternoon will include arts and crafts, music, hot chocolate and a visit from Santa. After the RBCA lighting, head uptown to the big show in town as the Little North Pole (144-03 Neponsit Ave) lights up for the season with a big show to celebrate. The party will feature live music and dance performances, special guests, food, a visit from Santa with toys for all the kids, plus the lighting of the most decorated home in Rockaway. The show kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on

Saturday, December 8. Some other lighting ceremonies to look forward to later in the season is the lighting of the trees and angels at the St. Francis de Sales prayer garden on Tuesday, December 11 at around 7 p.m. This one is a sight to see as more than 100 trees will light up the garden. The evening will also include caroling, refreshments, a visit from Santa and more. On Wednesday, December 12, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital will hold its own holiday celebration with a tree lighting and nativity dedication at 11 a.m. This event is open to all.

***** Someone tweeted a photo of the never-completed 16-story buildings that stood like a skeletons for years at Beach 193rd Street in Breezy Point. The photo was from the early 1970s. Lawsuits stopped the complex of residences and commercial spaces that would have changed the area forever. The buildings themselves were imploded in 1979. The hills from the rubble remain there today, though covered by grass and shrubs. The company that built the complex sued the City and wanted the rubble preserved as evidence in the court case, according to an article in The New York Times. So, when you pass by the hill, you’ll know it’s more than a hill. ***** The same NY Times article from 1979 mentions how the Breezy beach grows “sever-

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2018 al feet wider every year.” Keep in mind it was growing wider in 1979 and has been doing so ever since. Oceanfront homes in Breezy are now about a quarter of a mile from the actual ocean. Amazing. The rock jetty at the point was built by the Army Corps of Engineers (remember them?) in the 1920s to curb the flow of sand that was threatening to reach across and cut off the entrance to Jamaica Bay. ***** Meanwhile, Rockaway, especially the Beach 90s, continues to erode. Photos from last week’s rains show surfers stepping into the ocean from the Beach 91st ramp that is now completely surrounded by ocean during extra high tides. ***** It’s more than the nation’s infrastructure that’s growing old. We are, too. By 2030 all baby boomers will be older than 65 and for the first time in the country’s history, old people will outnumber children (those 18 and younger), according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It’s

projected that there will be 78 million people 65 years and older, compared to 76.7 million whippersnappers. ***** Another reminder, New York State Senator and Marine Corps veteran James Sanders Jr. will be hosting a Veterans Job and Resource Fair on Friday, December 7 (Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day) from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at the Daniel M. O’Connell American Legion Post 272 (Knights of Columbus), located at 330 Beach 90th Street. This event is free of charge to both attendees and vendors. Page 7 rain has moved 2018 into the top 10 wettest years in New York’s history. Five of the top ten have occurred since 2000. Only two years since 1970 have ranked in the top 10 driest. It’s been a while since we heard drought talk. Quite the opposite with all the flooding that occurs in Rockaway and Broad Channel. ***** It might be getting cold, but it’s also when the city starts looking for lifeguards for next summer. Applicants must pass the Qualifying Test which begins at city indoor pools across the city beginning on December 3. Tests are in December and January. Demanding Answers or Court Time for the Courthouse By Katie McFadden

It might be time to take the Courthouse to court. At least that’s how some felt at the latest meeting regarding the long-abandoned Rockaway Courthouse on Beach 90th Street. On Tuesday, November 27, Community Board 14’s Economic Development Committee (CB14 EDC) gathered at the Knights of Columbus in hopes of hearing some new developments with the courthouse owned by Uri Kaufman of The Harmony Group. Yet with Kaufman being a no-show, many left the meeting disappointed and suggesting that the NYC Economic Development Corporation considers taking back the courthouse to give it to new hands. At Tuesday’s meeting, CB14 EDC Committee members were expecting to hear news on progress on the courthouse, which has seen minimal action since NYCEDC selected The Harmony Group as the developer in

April 2013. In March 2015, Kaufman was awarded the property at a price tag of $50,000 in part because of a promise that The Harmony Group would invest $10 million into transforming it into a medical center. Things were looking good as Dr. Mark Gelwan and the Rockaway’s ASC Development group were expected to become tenants of the future medical facility, but by late 2014, Rockaway’s ASC Development had a falling out with The Harmony Group and instead opted to develop a brand new medical facility at Beach 105th Street, which is now nearing completion. As if losing his tenants and now having the competition of another medical facility nearby weren't enough, a court ordered The Harmony Group to pay $300,000 for a breach of contract to Gelwan and other defendants in a lawsuit in November 2017. Yet Kaufman remained optimistic. In September 2017, Kaufman came to a Rockaway Beach Civ-

ic Association (RBCA) meeting to outline his plans. However it lacked many details, such as what specific medical uses the building would be used for. Kaufman was asked to return when he had more concrete plans. In a follow-up meeting in December 2017, NYCEDC representative Eleni Bourinaris, provided an update to ease some concerns that Kaufman wouldn’t be able to use the building for anything other than medical use, as he had originally promised, instead of turning it into something else that the community didn’t want. Soon after, asbestos removal began, but not much else. With minimal work taking place and the need for another medical facility no longer there, the RBCA once again brought up the issue in May 2018 and went as far as to say that the NYCEDC should consider taking the property back from Kaufman and opening it up to new proposals. But Kau-

fman insisted he was making progress. This past summer, The Rockaway Times reached out to Kaufman who said, “We're literally inches away. We have a tentative closing date with the bank for the construction loan for July 31.” Yet there has still been limited action occurring at the building that once bore a sign saying, “Coming in 2017.” So CB14 called for a meeting in hopes of receiving updates. However, after Kaufman didn’t show up and NYCEDC’s Susan Goldfinger, the Senior Vice President for Real Estate Transaction Services, showed up in place of Bourinaris to provide no substantial update on Tuesday, committee members left, calling the meeting a “waste of time.” Goldfinger began by presenting some of the updates. 2017, which was completed in spring 2018, the completion of environmental testing in fall 2018 and the start of internal demolition in the fall of 2018, which is 80 percent complete. With so little new information, and no news of Kaufman having any tenants locked in, fears once again began to swirl about the property eventually being used for another use, or an unwanted “medical” use such as a methadone or abortion clinic. And once again, talk began of having the project stopped and beginning the process of reverting the property back to the NYCEDC and for it to be open to another developer. CB14 member and Rockaway Civic Association President Noreen Ellis expressed concerns about Kaufman’s financial situation and the lack of tenants. “When we first heard about him, his finances were a little concerning to me. He’s debt-financing projects, so he needs to show financers that he has anchor tenants for the project.

Two of his other projects in Albany had financial difficulties, so I believe a lot of these delays may have been due to a lack of financing and a lack of tenancy and it’s a vicious cycle. There’s a concern that at the 7th inning, he’s going to try to change something and the community won’t be part of the dialogue. You already have a larger medical facility going up on Beach 105th and I’m not sure he’s going to have the tenant base for this. We’re afraid there’s going to be a bait and switch,” Ellis said, to which Goldfinger replied that Kaufman is limited to only certain medical uses. Frustration led CB14 member and RBCA president John Cori to suggest that the property be taken back and used for something else altogether, as the RBCA had requested back in the spring. “At what point does a local civic or community board say to you that we want to take that property back, and at what point do you listen? We already sent a letter to you seven months ago asking for that to

happen,” Cori said. The EDC’s Goldfinger defended Kaufman, saying, “We feel that even if it is moving slowly, he’s acting in good faith. He’s made investments and it may not seem to the community that it's sufficient enough, but at this point, we are encouraged by that and want to give him the opportunity to see this through.” Cori retorted, “We had promises made in this room that work would commence on January 1 of this year,” to which Goldfinger replied, “Work did commence. He did asbestos remediation, which is required.” Cori pressed on: “Let’s get him here and make a timeline that if he goes beyond, we want to start the reverter clause. Going forward, if he’s in default, we have an opportunity to revisit getting the building back and opening it up to other uses, but I’ve been involved in those situations and it takes a good five to seven years to bring that to the table.” Cori replied, “This has been an eyesore for the community for many years and it’s getting worse. It’s not maintained and it’s unfair to this community. We want the developer here. We want Uri to answer questions directly and have him on record. Raise the Roof at the RAA Watercolors are nice on canvas, but never pouring from a ceiling. After 15 years of wind, and storms, including Hurricane Sandy, the roof of the Rockaway Artists Alliance sTudio 7 Gallery in Fort Tilden has taken a beating. The RAA has repeatedly made repairs to keep up with the damage, but it is beyond the point of simple repairs. “Beneath that roof is a unique, historic structure that houses art exhibitions and hosts performance events. It is our mission to offer these cultural programs to the residents of the area. RAA’s stewardship of this structure is crucial so that our community can continue to enjoy an array of enriching experiences within its walls,” a message on the RAA website reads. To repair the roof, the RAA is currently raising funds to match a $10,000 grant from

The Fund for the City of New York obtained via advocacy by RAA partner, the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Park Conservancy. “The sTudio 7 gallery is the heart of RAA. Here, we have exhibited and worked with local, national and international artists for twenty-three years and counting. The gallery continues to serve as a vibrant and diverse venue serving the community with exhibitions, events and education programs, and expanding to include studio space for working artists,” the RAA notes. During the season of giving, the RAA is asking the community to consider making a donation so that they can keep up the same great work that they do at sTudio 7. A Thousand Words They say a picture says a thousand words, so we’ll let these shocking photos by local photographer Joe Lupo do most of the talking. One message is clear. This isn’t good. Lupo shot these photos around Beach 91st Street on Sunday, November 25, after a night of heavy rain from a storm that also brought on extreme high tides, leading to more beach erosion and yet another round of street flooding with water coming up from drains in various parts of the peninsula and in Broad Channel. As can be seen in the photos, the protective dunes have eroded into eight-foot high cliffs and the beach access ramp is looking more and more like a boat launch. Little North Pole to Make ‘Great Christmas Light Fight’ Debut By Katie McFadden

Lights, camera…lights! The Little North Pole has been thrilling locals for more than two decades, but now everyone will get to see a piece of what Rockaway gets to enjoy each December when The Little North Pole lights up television screens across the country on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” on Monday, December 3. Joe Mure’s extravagant Little North Pole display in Neponsit is set to have its annual lighting for the 2018 holiday season on Saturday, December 8, but before that, the big display will appear on the small screen as part of a national holiday light competition. “The Great Christmas Light Fight” showcases the wildest and most spectacular Christmas displays in America. In each onehour episode, four families from all around the country decorate their homes to the extreme in the hopes of winning the coveted Light Fight trophy and a $50,000 prize. This season, the Mures and their Little North Pole will be among those competing, but according to Joe Mure, it was a fight to get him to even consider doing the show. Mure, who was familiar with the show, initially turned down the offer when producers reached out to him, asking him to be featured. “When they first called me, I said I wasn’t interested. Then they called me a second time and I said I wasn’t interested. And on the third call, they said I could win $50,000. I said I wasn’t interested in the money, but I made them a deal and said if they give it to the charity we do this for, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and they let me talk about the charity on TV, I would consider it. A few weeks later they came back and okayed it,” he said. Last year, the Little North Pole had an early arrival, with the lighting and the big celebration leading up to it, happening almost a month earlier than usual, on November 12. However the timing was coordinated with when the producers of “The Great Christmas Light Fight” were set to film Mure’s home.

And when the show’s judge, Taniya Nayak showed up, she was in for quite a surprise. “I had seen the show before and part of the reason I told them no was because I’d seen a bunch of the houses that were featured and they were just tremendous, 20, 30, 40 acre properties with huge light shows that were second to none. So I figured if we were going to compete against them, we wanted a fair shot to win, so we figured out a possibility to give us an edge and that’s why we had our celebration on the night that the judge showed up. On the show, you usually watch the judge come up to a house and there are 10 people outside. There’s a big difference when you pull up to a house with 10 people and when you pull up to one with 5,000,” Mure said, referring to the crowd his holiday block party draws for the annual lighting of his home to raise money for JDRF. North Pole the boost it needs to win on the episode that will air on ABC at 9 p.m. on Monday, December 3. Or perhaps it’s the extravagant illuminated features on his home like a real carousel, sky-high toy soldiers, an animated Santa’s workshop, or every inch of the home covered in lights. Or maybe the real winning factor will be the reason Mure puts on the display each year. “Our real intention is to really give each and every child an experience and memory of Christmas that we believe is something they’ll remember the rest of their lives. We’re looking to put smiles on as many faces as we can. At the same time, we’re raising money for juvenile diabetes research,” he said. “We’ve raised anywhere between one and two million dollars over the last 24 years and that has gone directly to JDRF. We’re hoping to continue and raise more up until a point where there’s a cure and we don’t need to do it anymore.” With the cameras around last year, the lighting of the Little

North Pole was a bit untraditional, with several takes of the lighting. “Filming the show was fun but it made it more difficult. The producer wanted to run the whole show, so it became complicated, dealing with someone that had never been to the Little North Pole and didn’t know how we usually do things. It delayed Santa coming in and giving out toys, which I wasn’t happy about because kids had to wait longer and I’m sure some went home early because of it. I think that was the negative aspect of filming, but I think people were understanding,” Mure said. However, depending on Monday’s results, Mure says it could all be worth it. “We’re hoping to win so that the charity will benefit by it, and if that takes place, then it’s a huge benefit in what we’ve done.” Another perk is the added exposure. Appearing on the show may be the gift that keeps on giving, whether the Little North Pole wins the prize money or not. Not only will the home be featured on “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” but the home has gotten some further attention from ABC leading up to the show. On Tuesday, November 27, the Little North Pole was featured in a segment on Good Morning America and Mure says ABC’s Nightline has contacted him to film a segment on Thursday, November 29 as well. The nationwide exposure could mean more visits to the Little North Pole this holiday season and more donations towards JDRF. Yet Mure is still hopeful the Little North Pole comes on top. “Hopefully by Monday, we’ll be declared a winner and the charity will benefit as a result. If the $50K can help make the life of a child with juvenile diabetes a little easier or better, then it’s all worth it,” Mure said. Tune in to ABC on Monday, December 3 at 9 p.m., to find out if The Little North Pole is enough to impress the judges and take home the money for JDRF. And, stay tuned for the following weekend, when the Little North Pole (144-03 Neponsit Ave) lights up for the season with the ceremony starting at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 8.

Rockaway Headaches Dear Editor: Not enough is being said that Rockaway is a mess. There is flooding everywhere and streets are all under construction. Even though there doesn’t seem to be much constructing going on. They put up cones or close streets but you hardly ever see anyone working. The beaches are eroding and nothing gets done. The Marine Park Bridge is another thing. Some mornings you’re better off walking into Brooklyn. And it’s always being repaired or closed for no reason. They could have built a new bridge by now. Post Office Praise Dear Editor: Kudos to the Rockaway Park Post Office. Recently I mailed about a dozen Thanksgiving cards at the street mailbox in front of the post office in Rockaway Park. Upon my return home, I realized I had only put my return address on them, no stamps, on these cards. My husband called the post office and spoke to a Mrs. Haywood, who was very accommodating. She took our phone number and said she would try to find them for me. On Saturday, about 6:30 pm, Mrs. Haywood called and said she had my mail and would hold it for me. Sure enough all my cards were wrapped in a rubber band with a note that had my name on it and a note to save them for me to pick up. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one out of every 68 children in the U.S. has autism. However, on a global scale, according to nonprofit organization, Global Autism Project (GAP), here are two beguiling statistics — there are 75 million people in the world with autism, and 85 percent of them live in developing countries. In the U.S., caregivers of loved ones with autism bemoan the lack of services, but can you imagine the horrific challenges parents of an autistic child or adult face in a rural village in Africa, China or Latin America? Well, the GAP is working towards changing that, and local Rockaway resident, Laura O'Connor Leonard, has joined in on their mission, and is heading to China to work with the Nanchang Huicong Chil-

I remember working with this one family, who were bringing their autistic child back to their home country, so that the devil could be removed from her. Many years ago, I heard that in India, the translation for autism was something like “a child without a brain.” All of my experiences, not only as a professional in the field, but as an individual who desired to make a difference, stayed with me. So a while back, when I heard about GAP, I knew this was an avenue I could affect

change on a global level, and this year, I finally stepped up and applied.” Founded by Molly Ola Pinney in 2003, Brooklyn-based GAP is an international nonprofit organization that partners with local centers around the world to provide services for children with autism. Recruits such as Leonard, otherwise know as SkillCorps volunteers, train teachers and parents, who in turn learn valuable skills needed to help teach children with autism. Pinney started the organization after moving to Ghana with a family who had a child with autism. She was struck by the lack of awareness and services provided there when families started showing up at her house looking for the woman who knew what autism was. Leonard said the volunteers work directly with the teachers and parents, not the children. “What I like about GAP is their emphasis on sustainability. When we go there, we work directly with the teachers and parents, not the kids, and then they in turn start working with the kids. The whole idea is sustainability, so the teachers and parents can continue to put in practice the skills we taught them, so they aren’t relying on us to be there to run the program. However, once we leave, GAP continues support and mentorship through weekly phone calls with the centers,” she said. Leonard was a little conflicted about her decision to go overseas. “I’m leaving for a month at the end of February. It’s all very daunting as I’ll be away from my family on my birthday. Also,

I know so many families here in NYC are also desperate for help. However, though we don’t have the best of services here, at least we have services. There’s so much room for improvement, but who knows, maybe there is something they are doing in China that I could bring back here,” she said. A significant requirement for GAP volunteers is that they have to fundraise a minimum of $5,000. The money goes towards the program the recruit is volunteering for. Also, recruits have to pay for their own airfare. As of press time, Leonard has raised $2,825. “Since I got accepted to the program in September, needless to say, it’s been quite a challenge, but I’m confident that we will reach our fundraising goal,” she said. Rockaway Resident Named World’s Best Bread Baker Rockaway Beach resident, Sarah Owens, is definitely not loafing around. This radical baker, award-winning cookbook author, and proprietor of wholesale locally-based, Ritual Fine Foods, went against the grain, and won the first-ever Tiptree World Bread Awards, a competition, organized with the British Food is GREAT program and supported by American Bakers Association (ABA), that gathered the stars of the bread-baking world, contending for the throne of upper crust. Owens beat competition from loaves sent in from around the U.S., delivered by courier and in person on the morning of the judging at Brooklyn’s Dumbo Loft on November 14. She won both her wholemeal/ wholewheat category and the overall competition for best bread, and walked away with a Tiptree hamper, a trophy and $1,000. The award ceremony was hosted by Stephen Hallam,

master baker, managing director of Dickinson & Morris in England, and chair of the judges. “The field was incredibly competitive,� says Hallam, whose fellow judges, more than 30 of them, included legendary bakers Zachary Golper of Bien Cuit, Jim Lahey of Sullivan Street Bakery, Amy Scherber of Amy’s Bread, and David and Tracey Zabar of Zabars, the historic NY food emporium. Owens launched Ritual Fine Foods (RFF) in 2010. RFF’s website (www.ritualfinefoods. com) states: “Owen’s enthusiasm for sourdough stems from her own digestive intolerances and fond memories of baking with the women of her family. Charles Grant Chalmers, aged 85, died in Rockaway Park, NY on Sunday, November 4, 2018. His demise followed a lengthy illness. Mr. Chalmers was one of the Queens-based, Once Upon a Time Inc.’s (OUAT) original performers, serving as a narrator/ dancer of “Images of Dance” during the 1970s. A native of Ontario, he was a star of the Ottawa Ballet, and in the early days of television, was a featured performer on such CBC shows as Denny Vaughn, Cross Canada Hit Parade and Country Hoedown, among many. His summers were spent in Shakespearean pursuits at the Stratford Festival. Mr. Chalmers came to the United States to study American Ballet Theater and was often hired as a partner by fellow Canadian, Guy Lombardo, who utilized his considerable adagio abilities with ballerina, Mia Slavenka. He exercised his vocal and dance abilities starring opposite Ginger Rogers in “Calamity Jane.” He followed this success with a series

of musicals starring Gale Storm, Julia Newmar, et al. Returning to TV, he was a recurring character on “Ryan’s Hope,” “All My Children,” etc. He enjoyed a parallel career as a designer and builder, and was in these capacities that he served OUAT during the 1990s. Charles created and fabricated the décor for more than a dozen ballets and musicals during that time. The new century found him in a more administrative role at OUAT. He has served as a substitute ballet teacher, interim director of the after-school program and full-time secretary/ treasurer of the corporation. Charles has a bachelor of science degree in geology from Carleton University in Ottawa, and greatly enjoyed bicycling about Rockaway, his adopted hometown. Still An Art Many medical practitioners, myself included, bemoan the fact that medicine, or the practice of it, has changed drastically in the last few decades. The age of techno-medicine has changed the way young doctors are trained and how they practice. Medicine, which is still an art and not a science, has come to be seen by many (especially plaintiff attorneys) as more of a science. All kinds of high-tech tests are ordered on people and, in many cases, are not needed. Doctors in the past were trained to use their own five senses to diagnose disease and only ordered tests

to confirm what they suspected. Many years ago, even the sense of taste was used. For example, a doctor would taste a person’s urine and, if it tasted sweet, would diagnose diabetes (thankfully that’s no longer necessary). This got me to thinking about a short essay that hangs on my office wall. It originally hung in my wife’s grandfather’s office. Peter Gillespie, who was born in 1875, graduated medical school in 1901. He was a GP in several small towns in Nebraska in the early 1900s. It is called “Eulogy of the Doctor” and I would like to share it with you. “There are men and classes

of men that stand above the common herd – the soldier, the sailor, the shepherd not infrequently, the artist rarely, rarelier still the clergyman, the physician almost as a rule. He is the flower of our civilization and when that stage of man is done with, only to be marveled at in history, he will be thought to have shared but little in the defects of the period and to have most notably exhibited the virtues of the race. Generosity he has, such as is possible only to those who practice an art and never to those who drive a trade: discretion, tested by a hundred secrets; tact, tried in a thousand embarrassments; and what is more important, herculean cheerfulness and courage. So it is that he brings air and cheer into the sick room and often enough, though not so often as he desires, brings healing.” This was written by Robert Louis Balfour Stevenson, who was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 13, 1850 and who died in the South

Page 29 Pacific, most likely of a cerebral hemorrhage, at age 44 on December 3, 1894. He is the author of many classics like “Treasure Island,” “Kidnapped,” and “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” Oddly enough, an internet search for “Eulogy” reveals that the Library of Congress lists it as being written on 1/1/1800, which is obviously impossible. MODERATION IS KEY The holiday season can be detrimental to your health. So many parties, an abundance of food, drinks and desserts. How do we discipline ourselves to eat healthy and not overindulge? It starts with Thanksgiving and flows into December and January. So many temptations with food we don’t normally eat. Not to mention the cocktails and sugary desserts. So this holiday season I decided to do a 21-day challenge at CROM Fitness to help me focus on eating healthy and exercising. After Thanksgiving. I thought I

could definitely use the incentive of this challenge to optimize my health. For the most part, I am healthy but I do have my weaknesses. I tend to try all the appetizers at a party. My wine glass seems to never be empty and I love to try new desserts. I definitely overindulge during the holiday season. Moderation is key but it seems to only work when I have my regular routines. When you hold yourself accountable and are aware of what you are putting into your body, you will feel much better physically and mentally. The fact is

when you exercise, you want to have a clean body so your chances of feeling strong and flexible are increased. We do not choose to go to a yoga class or fitness class if we are overfed the night before or over-served. However, when you commit to a wellness class, you want to have clean living. That is not to say you can’t go to the class, but chances are you will not feel good. The question is how do we moderate and still socialize in the holiday season? I am not one for counting calories, but rather choosing healthy foods and drinking lots of water. When it comes to cocktails, you want to limit your intake. Be aware and yes, count how many drinks you are having. Try drinking water to stay hydrated and you might be surprised how delicious water can taste and feel in your body. Hydration is key. Your mind will have more clarity and your organs will thank you. Count the glasses of water you drink each day. Meal prep is a great way to have the food readily available

to you for the week. Quinoa with red peppers is a typical meal prep in my house to add to our salads. My adult children prep their proteins for the beginning of the week. Usually grilled chicken. Lots of bean salads, squash, sweet potatoes, eggplant, broccoli and cauliflower. If this is already made in your fridge, you will tend to have an easy time eating the right foods. Maybe you will eat before you go to the party that may not have healthy choices for you. Allowing yourself to cheat once or twice a week is not the worst thing you could do. After all, it is the most wonderful time of the year. We enjoy going to parties, talking to our friends and family. Socializing is great for your mental health. Let’s make this holiday season healthy for the body, mind and spirit. Moderation and awareness is key. Don’t feel guilty when at that one party you overindulge. Tomorrow is a brand new day to start fresh. May you be happy, healthy, free of suffering and live with ease.

That Time Of Year Each year I promise myself, to no avail, that I will not allow politically correct liberal attempts to denigrate the Christmas season annoy me, as each year I find my blood pressure going through the roof right around this time. For example, in recent years the American Humanist Association spent thousands of dollars on an advertising campaign specifically targeting the Christmas holiday. Oops! Did I write Christmas? Of course, I meant to say the upcoming Winter Festival season. The ad campaign states "Why believe in a God? Just be good for goodness' sake." Now, one could argue that the intent of the ad is well-meaning as it simply puts forth the argument that people should be good. I would argue that if that were the case, why involve a question that makes one suspect an individual's belief in a higher power? The ad could have been just as compelling if it simply said: "Just be good for goodness' sake." The organization's website greets each visitor with a banner proclaiming: "Join us and help promote progressive, dynamic values!" I have always been amused by the fact that over the past several years, the left has abandoned the term "liberal" for the more palatable "progressive" descriptor. I asked a friend of mine who

The Rockaway Times is also a steadfast atheist and card-carrying member of the American Humanist Association, why his group felt it necessary to denigrate a long established Christian holiday which harms no one? He advised me that the organization is committed to building an inclusive America, grounded in an embrace of reason, ethics, scientific inquiry, and compassion—rather than religious dogma. I finally asked my friend to look me in the eye and tell that he absolutely does not believe in God. He did so without so much as a blink. In turn, he asked me why do I believe in God and place so much stock in this celebration of Christmas? I thought long and hard prior to responding, but ultimately I told my friend that when I was a kid, I used to pray every night for a new bike. When my mother overheard my prayers one evening, she reminded me that the Lord doesn't work that way. So, I just stole one and then went to church, where a priest heard my confession and plea that the Good Lord forgive me for this terrible theft. And you know what? The priest in the confessional told me that after I recited an Act of Contrition, the Lord's Prayer and 10 Hail Marys, the Good Lord would forgive my transgression. Ever since then, I always thought it would be somewhat disrespectful for me not to acknowledge his birthday every Christmas. Notwithstanding the above, in closing, I wish the Humanist "progressives" of this world a Merry Christmas and I will keep them in my prayers! This past Sunday morning's high tide at 9:20 a.m. took many residents by surprise, being accompanied by significant tidal flooding of many streets throughout the Channel. Dan Mundy emailed me that West 15th Road was under two feet of tidal flooding. Even West 12th Road, with its newly emplaced end of street bulkhead and raised street, experienced several inches of flooding. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

New Vietnam Spread Some Veterans Memorial Yuletide Cheer With The Little Angels In Queens Project

Borough President Melinda Katz and NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, will join Vietnam War veterans from Queens in hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Elmhurst Park on Thursday, November 29. More veterans call Queens home than anywhere in the City of New York, and the project will be the first borough-wide memorial to honor all Queens residents who died while serving in the Vietnam War. It is to be built on the northwest corner of Elmhurst Park and is slated for completion in fall, 2019. A total of 420 Queens residents lost their lives while

serving in the Vietnam War, according to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 32, which represents Vietnam War veterans of Queens. The construction of a Queens Vietnam Veterans Memorial has been long sought by members of Chapter 32. The late Pat Toro, the former president of Chapter 32 and a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, was a vocal and persistent supporter of the project before he passed in 2014. Chapter 32 has followed Mr. Toro’s lead by continuing to seek the necessary funding. The design and construction is fully funded by allocations from the Borough President’s office.
