Irish Circle To Be A Bar for those wanting to have dinner, lunch or brunch. The patio will be littered with numerous homemade cable spool game tables, a horseshoe pit, a ping pong table and a cornhole court. We have a couple of other surprise design features that everyone will have to wait for.â€? An application for a State Liquor license is before the Community Board. Questions or objections must submitted by November 17th. So when might the doors open? “Because we are planning extensive renovations, we don’t anticipate that we will open until early July unfortunately. However, we are going to push the process along as fast as possible.â€? Brooke is excited by the project but cautions, “We are still a long way from closing. We need the building to appraise at the right number and we need the engineer’s report to be positive. If we determine after this month’s due diligence period that this is not a prudent business opportunity then we will pull out.â€? If Community House opens it will continue a long tradition of bar restaurants at the Beach 102nd Street location. It ďŹ rst opened as Charles Schilling’s Roadhouse on what was formerly called Henry Street in 1893. It was the Irish Circle from 1940 until May, 2014. The building has managed to withstand the 1938 New England Hurricane, as well as Hurricanes Donna, Irene and Sandy.

9;

It looks like a Rockaway landmark will live again, albeit under a new name. The Irish Circle, closed in May, 2014 after bankruptcy proceedings, will be a bar and restaurant again if all goes according to plan. Kelley Brooke and partners, including members of the Joseph family of Belle Harbor, are in contract and expect to open the place as the “Community House. For Brooke, this more than a real estate or business decision. “Before we even considered buying the restaurant I kept saying that ‘it is such a shame that the Irish Circle is still not back, the community misses it, the community deserves it and after all we have been through the community needs it.’ The word community kept coming up. Then we decided that if no one else was going to do it, then we would and we would call it Community House. “ Brooke will be the managing partner. She said Eric Joseph, who has worked in the hospitality industry for 15 plus years, will implement a creative and incredible drink menu. Other strategic partners will add expertise in all facets of design, construction and hospitality management. “We envision a place that the community would gather in for hours and just hang out. We want the design to include something for everyone. The front room will be a sports bar with numerous televisions, tables, booths and comfortable couches. The back room will be a warm and inviting room

BRIEFS Pastor Leaving St. Francis de Sales Just a little more than a year and four months after succeeding Monsignor John Brown at St. Francis de Sales, Father Thomas Doyle will be exiting. The Diocese press ofďŹ ce declined to elaborate on his short stint but said such transfers “happen all the time.â€? The Diocese said his replacement would be announced shortly. There is speculation that Monsignor John Bracken, who had previously served at St. Francis, will return. Doyle’s tenure, though short, sparked divisions among parishioners. Apparently, faced with insurance and security matters, he set policies regarding gym and property use. Such decisions riled some. In late September, a parishioner chained himself to a church bench to protest the church being closed during afternoon hours. A parish fundraiser had trouble ďŹ lling tables. He did have supporters who insisted he had a hard job and was doing the best he could. Some said his detractors were unfair or just a loud minority. In a letter to parishioners in early

October, Doyle said “mischief makersâ€? and gossip were threats to the Parish. “Gossip threatens the life of the Church and the life of the Vatican. And I would say, the Parish of St. Francis.â€? He went on to write, “Gossip has grown into a frenzy‌ and we need to stop the backstabbing and courageously call people out.â€? Doyle had more than gossip to attend to last week as vandals cut off the hands of a Christ statue in the St. Francis prayer garden. Although he didn’t speak to local press, he did tell CBS-TV that the episode “was a little heart-wrenching, going out to see, you know, the damage that was done.â€?

Safety Meeting In Arverne Called From a public announcement from Council Member Donovan Richards and State Senator James Sanders Jr: (We) are teaming up to host a very important meeting for the Arverne community. The recent crime wave in Arverne has made it clear that we must unite as a community and stand against those who break the law. While there is no quick ďŹ x, a coalition of residents, elected ofďŹ cials, police ofďŹ cers and the broader community is essential to stopping crime, as well as addressing its underlying causes. We implore residents from all areas of Rockaway, not just Arverne, to join us as we build towards a brighter

THE

future for the peninsula and work together to resolve the issues that impact us all. Make sure to tell your neighbors about this important meeting! The special guest is Craig S. What Do You Do In The Loo? The Rockaway Times Human Resource department is having a tough time setting bathroom limits for employees. That is, we would be, if we actually had an HR department. It seems a big stink is brewing as more and more companies struggle with determining how long is a reasonable time for employees to spend in the john. Word from the corporate world is that too many people are working on their makeup, visiting travel websites, napping, or playing games all under

cover of the stall. Of course, households with several daughters have had battles through the years. But workplaces are now the new bathroom battlegrounds. For some, the workplace throne is now a place to multi-task. Although it used to be a place for Numbers 1 and 2 it seems options, besides bodily ones, are now regular functions during the bathroom visit. Some employees update their Facebook statuses while others play Angry Birds or Candy Crush. These bath-

room malingerers, aka stall campers, are savvy enough to engage in such activities with their pants at their ankles in an effort to evade detection by employers and colleagues who suspect stalling in the stall. There’s no ushing away the hard feelings brewing. There are some people who are particularly miffed by potty potatoes (as opposed to couch potatoes) because they themselves can’t even use the work place john. In other words, they can’t do their business in their place of business. These are the people who have system shutdowns and cannot use facilities outside the comfort stations of their own home. They just can’t go. They’ve got the daily double: shy kidneys and shy bowels. When I ďŹ rst came across this tempest in the toilet, I knew this would require further research. Who knew, for instance, that the can’tgo-away-from-home crowd had a counterpart? Apparently there are some people who will only relieve themselves at work because it’s on the employer’s dime. They feel like they are getting paid to go. Hey, I made a sh**load of money last year. It’s a mess according to Human Resource teams everywhere. How do they monitor loo etiquette? Some employees bring laptops in to the bathroom. Are they so dedicated to their work that they

Page 5 bring their work from their work cubicle to the private cubicle? Or is just a ruse? The employers and HR people are in a bind. What are they supposed to say, hey, what are you doing in there? And why is it taking so long? Bathroom monitor is sure to become one of the fastest growing job opportunities for college graduates. I hear some schools are now offering degrees in Bathroom Management. It’s no easy job. There is more of a challenge than just standing outside the door with a stopwatch. Some of the aforementioned people who can’t go at work actually have no trouble going if they have an option. Some need to travel to a bathroom on another oor, away from people they might know. Others have to leave the building. They can let loose at a Starbuck’s but not in the ofďŹ ce latrine. It won’t be long before some politician introduces the Employee Bathroom Leave Act allowing people time to ďŹ nd the right throne. And you can expect technology to offer options. Can’t use a bathroom? There’s an app for that. Oh, two things. Don’t tell me where you were when you read this. And wash your hands. â–

Rail Line Study Released By Bianca Fortis

Reactivating train service along the now-abandoned Rockaway Beach Branch of the Long Island Railroad could result in half a million daily subway trips, according to a report released this week. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder announced the completion of a study, which evaluated the potential community impacts of two plans proposing to develop the Rockaway Beach Branch, on Monday at Queens College. A year ago, Goldfeder, an outspoken supporter of reactivation, secured funding for the study, which he asked the Office of Community Studies at the Queens College Department of Urban Studies to complete. The plan to reactive train service is one that many Rockaway residents have lauded, as it would significantly decrease travel time into the mainland of Queens, as well as into the other boroughs. The second proposal is to develop the right of way into the “QueensWay,” a 3.5-mile linear park, akin to Manhattan’s High Line, that would feature cultural programming, art installation and even food offerings. QueensWay supporters last

month unveiled their design plans for the park; that group had previously received a $467,000 grant from the governor’s office to study that option. The QueensWay is estimated to cost $120 million to complete by its proponents, while reactivating train service was estimated to cost between $700 and $900 million, Goldfeder said. Last year, the MTA included a single paragraph in its 148-page Capital Needs Assessment report concerning reactivation of the train service: “A possible option is the utilization of abandoned or underutilized Rights of Way such as the LIRR Bay Ridge Branch (linking southern and eastern Brooklyn with Central and northern Queens) or the abandoned Rockaway Beach Branch (linking Howard Beach and Ozone Park with Woodhaven) as transverse routes linking radial subway lines,” the report said. “Conversion of existing ROWs, where a solution to an identified travel need can be defined, could help reduce land acquisition and construction costs, and facilitate construction time in densely developed areas.” In August, State Comptroller Tom

DiNapoli said reactivation would be a good investment. Restoring service on the Rockaway Beach Branch would be a less costly way to speed commutes between South Queens and Manhattan, improve travel within the borough, and promote economic growth,” he said in a report. Service on the RBB began in the 1880s. On the Rockaway peninsula, the line split: a western spur ended in Rockaway Park and an eastern one passed through Far Rockaway, Five Towns and reconnected in Jamaica. The right of way also connected to the Montauk and Atlantic branches of the LIRR. In the 1950s, a series of fires caused damage to the rail line’s trestles and the LIRR sold the right

of way to the New York City Transit Authority. Eventually service was cut entirely, with the Transit Authority citing low ridership. The rail line has sat dormant ever since and has become overgrown with weeds and brush. The study, which, by admission of its own creators, is limited in scope, was unable to come to conclusions about either costs or technical requirements associated with either proposal. “The intent of our study was to provide as objective information as we could to contribute to the debate over what the best possible uses of the line can be,” Professor Scott Larson, who led the study, said. “In doing that, we did not see Continued on page 28

Dear Editor: It is sad to see all the marches for the dead children. The children and young adults that are caught in the crossďŹ re of criminals with guns. It is ludicrous to see the gun buyback programs run by the city. Am I missing something here, are criminals rushing up to sell their guns and turn to a life of ipping hamburgers? NO THEY ARE NOT. What is it about liberals that they do not get it with gun control? There are more criminals then police. That, in turn, could mean that there are more illegal guns then there are police. In every state that the legal populace is armed with legal weapons the crime rate falls. The study from the FBI and the congressional research service conclude that violent crime has fallen by over 48 percent in areas that allow for citizens to arm themselves and carry concealed weapons. (fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/ RL32842.pdf) When even the government concedes that they are helpless and that gun ownership is a good thing the liberals are still ďŹ ghting to take away the one ďŹ ghting chance of the free American. On page 9 of the study you see the murder rate drop almost in half. How is this a bad thing? How can people who lost someone not consider that their child may have been in the half that were saved? What is wrong with people that facts do not matter to them and they “FEELâ€? it would be better the other way. I have no problems with waiting periods and background checks and most reasonable things that may prevent a person that should not own a gun from owning one. I do resent the people who try to tell me that they know better than I do what is good for me. Robert Bing Strassburg

Why So Long? Dear Editor: I get that losing the ferry is a great

blow to the community but it’s just another item in a long list of things that are so wrong. The Peninsula library branch is still closed! That’s just unforgiveable. Are they on the same timeline as the people who are supposed to be rebuilding the boardwalk? What is it with this City and our politicians who can get nothing done? George Duggan

She’s Had It Dear Editor: This is for all the ROCKAWAY representatives, who do nothing for Rockaway. Get over the party. Put Sandy behind you and ďŹ ght for the Boardwalk. We need it. The Mayor doesn’t give a damn. We the people of Rockaway need to call them all out. Shame on you, shame on you Millie Orenga

What’s Good For The Goose Dear Editor: My letter this evening to The Mayor... I am delighted Mr. Mayor you took ‘the boat’ to Rockaway for the Flight #587 Memorial event Wednesday morning. Lukewarm On The Rail Line Study The restoration of the Rockaway Beach Rail Line which would cut the commute time to Manhattan to about 40 minutes would transform Rockaway and produce beneďŹ ts far beyond what a ferry service could offer. The results of a Queens College study released on Monday suggests that a lot of Queens residents would beneďŹ t – not just people who live in Rockaway. It’s too bad the line is called the Rockaway Beach Branch because too many people on the mainland assume it’s only a net positive for Rockaway. In fact, the line would give Queens something it desperately needs and that is north-south transportation. But it’s name is the least of the challenges. The Borough of Queens has a truly pathetic transportation system. Adding buses and bus lanes and lowering the speed limit will only clog things further. It’s an embarrassment and a mess. In Queens, you can’t there from here. You can’t get anywhere. The study, which is really becoming a 4 letter word in Rockaway, is nice, it’s ďŹ ne. But the study won’t

do a damn thing except keep the conversation going. And going. And going. The rail line needs MTA muscle not just MTA mild interest which is the level the rail line is at now. The rail line would require political solidarity which is not in place. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, for one, is no fan of reactivating the line. None of those obstacles, however, suggest any sort of warmth for the idea of the Queensway, a knockoff of the High Line in the City. That’s the other idea supported by some other study. There are too many things wrong with that idea to list here. The overall point is nothing deserves any kind of hooray. The boardwalk can’t get ďŹ xed in 5 years. A refurbished rail line might take‌oh, we don’t even want to guess. So, this is a nice charge for the rail advocates and nothing more at this point. With the ferry there was reason to hope. The rail line is like the lottery. You gotta be in it to win it, but the odds are about the same.

NY Rising Projects Move Forward By Bianca Fortis

When the de Blasio administration failed to fund the Rockaway ferry – despite $7 million allocated for the service as a stopgap measure through the state’s NY Rising program – some Rockaway residents were concerned about where the rest of the money from the program will go. Throughout the state of New York, 50 communities were promised funds for resiliency and recovery projects through the governor’s NY Rising program following Hurricane Sandy. The Rockaway West NY Rising Committee, which comprises Neponsit, Belle Harbor, Rockaway Park and Rockaway Beach, had allocated $7 million of its promised $21.3 million for continued ferry service. Committee member Danny Ruscillo said he hasn’t heard from the governor’s ofďŹ ce about how that $7 million will be redistributed. “We’ve heard not one single thing,â€? Ruscillo said. “This is a project that we put nine months into and the community and the public voted on this – we pulled them out of their houses so many times.â€?

Requests for comment by the governor’s ofďŹ ce have not been returned. But on Wednesday, the Governor’s OfďŹ ce of Storm Recovery announced that another project, $8.2 million worth of improvements to Beach 108th Street, had received funding. The project aims to overhaul the streetscape of Beach 108th Street from Beach Channel Drive to Shore Front Parkway. It will include stormwater drainage improvements, permeable gutters in the roadway and LED streetlights with resilient means of backup power. There is a hope that the renewed improvements will help draw visitors to the community. “Residents and businesses are still working to rebound from the impacts of Superstorm Sandy,â€? Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. “Building on the distinct qualities of this passageway, while incorporating new resiliency measures, will help boost the economic recovery of this special community.â€? While Ruscillo was pleased that the project is being funded, he’s still concerned about the rest of the money. He pointed out that al-

though Beach 108th Street will be improved, there will be neither a dock nor a ferry nor to bring visitors there. “The $8.2 million is fantastic, but what about the transportation option?â€? he said. “I will not have faith until I see the $21.3 million and all the projects implemented.â€? On Wednesday, the governor’s ofďŹ ce also announced $4.5 million was available for streetscaping along the Mott Avenue Corridor, a project proposed by the NY Rising Rockaway East Committee, which consists of representatives from Arverne, Edgemere, Bayswater and Far Rockaway. This project will also include stormwater drainage improvements and LED lighting, as well as new signs, benches and bike racks and lanes. “Mott Avenue has been long overdue for a face-lift,â€? City Councilman Donovan Richards said in a statement. “Making enhancements which improve the resiliency of the corridor only strengthens the Rockaway Peninsula as a whole. I am glad that NY Rising is taking charge of this initiative with the Rockaway East Plans. This will not only better our infrastructure, but it will attract further investment and economic development.â€? Rockaway East is eligible for up to a total of $15.1 million. The Broad Channel NY Rising

Committee is on track to seeing its projects completed as well, according to the group’s chair, Dan Mundy. Broad Channel is eligible for up to $6.06 million in state funds. The committee allocated that money to a number of what Mundy called “tangible projects, including resiliency improvements to the American Legion Hall and the Broad Channel Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, as well as providing sewer and water connections to homes along Lanark Road. “We wanted to see stuff get done, Mundy said. “We didn’t want to put the money toward a study that’s going to sit on a shelf for 30 years that no one’s going to listen to anyway. The Broad Channel committee met this past Monday, leaving its members enthusiastic and optimistic, Mundy said. “They told us the money is in place and the projects are good to go, he said. “At any moment you get worried something could come hit you, but so far so good. Over in Breezy Point, Committee Chair Denise Neibel said two projects – stormwater drainage improvements and the repair of two bayside docks destroyed by Sandy – are making their way through the approval process. LIGHTS, CAMERAS, END OF ACTION By John Sica

Have you ever walked past a set where they are filming a movie or television show and wonder what are all these trucks and people doing? Or have you ever sat in a theater or in front of a television set when the closing credits are rolling and wonder how many people does it take to make a show? Well if you are interested, this article will give you a little insight. Anyone who has ever read anything that I have written for this paper or knows I like to write about what is going on in our great hometown of Rockaway. So when Rockaway Times editor Kevin Boyle asks me to write an article I just write from the heart about what is going on around me. Unfortunately, what has been consuming my life for 17 hours a day since July 20th is working on a television series called, Forever. And as the more than one hundred workers on the shooting crew like to say, “It only feels like forever.” Not that we don’t like the show, I highly recommend watching it. It airs on Tuesdays at 10pm on ABC TV. The cast is very likable on screen and even more likable when the cameras are off. They are really down to earth, friendly and

sincerely nice people. Let’s start at the top, Ioan Gruffudd. Ioan plays Dr. Henry Morgan, a 200 year old man who stopped aging in his thirties. He takes a job in the New York City Medical Examiner’s office to find the key to unlock the curse of his immortality. This Wales UK born actor is probably best known for his role as Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four. Before I ever worked in the business, I always thought that actors were overpaid whiners who had the easiest job in the world. After watching this pro work though, I have a newfound respect for how demanding their job is. Ioan is pretty much in every scene which means he works about 15 hours a day and then has to go home and learn pages of dialogue for the next day. Since he plays a medical examiner, his dialogue is often very technical. Through it all though he is a really nice person who misses his family. Whenever I talk to him in his “British” accent he comes back at me in my Brooklyn accent and we laugh. Next is my favorite, and the reason I am working on the show, Alana De La Garza. Alana is a beautiful actress who was a veteran of Law and Order for 5 seasons. She plays

a New York City detective, Jo Martinez, who relies on Dr. Morgan’s expertise and quirky knowledge of ways to die to help her solve homicide cases. Alana has had an interesting life and has followed her heart and instincts to make it as a successful actress. Her character in the show is as lovable as she is off the show, a little sarcastic, a little vulnerable, a little skeptical, but a lot of take charge confidence. The supporting cast includes the timeless Judd Hirsch. Judd plays Abe, who is the only one who knows Dr. Morgan’s secret, having been raised by him as a baby. Judd and I trade stories about old Rockaway, old Coney Island and Brighton Beach. Judd has lived everywhere in New York, having been born in the Bronx in 1935. Also in the supporting cast are Joel David Moore who is as funny off camera as he is on. Also Donnie Keshawarz who is as nice a gentleman as you will meet. And finally Lorraine Toussaint, a strong woman and actress, and a great mother. Those are the recurring actors on the show and each episode brings in a dozen more actors in addition to dozens of background. There are departments for: pro-

duction with 18 people working on set, camera 8, electrics 9, locations 2, grips 14, props 6, construction 9, special effects 5, sound 5, set decorating 7, wardrobe 5, hair and makeup 5, catering 5, craft services 3, transportation 25 and parking 5. These are just the people working on the set. In addition, there are rigging grips and electrics, additional set dressers, office production assistants, accountants, production designer, art director, set designer, set decorator, location managers and scouts. Unfortunately the sad truth about the business is that there are only less than two dozen positions where there is really any artistic input for the workers, excluding the actors. Most of us have a job to do whether it is running electrical wires, building a platform, driving equipment or people, setting up furniture, keeping track of things. Some people are busy when the camera is rolling, some in between shots. Everyone is needed though, television production is like a finely oiled machine. Everyone has a job to do, they know what needs to be done, and when the time comes they do it. There are no excuses, Continued on page 25

De Blasio Blunders Flight 587 Memorial Ceremony By Bianca Fortis

Mayor Bill de Blasio showed up 20 minutes late to Wednesday morning’s Flight 587 memorial ceremony, leaving both Rockaway residents and members of New York City’s Dominican community furious. To add insult to injury, the mayor’s office blamed the morning fog on his tardiness – because he showed up by boat, which was delayed because of the weather. The incident comes less than two weeks after service for the Rockaway ferry ended. The plane, which was traveling to the Dominican Republic, crashed into Belle Harbor on the morning of Nov. 12, 2001, just two months and a day after September 11. It was unclear as of Wednesday afternoon where the mayor disembarked from the boat. The former ferry dock, at Beach 108th Street, was removed on Nov. 3. The ceremony, which took place at the Flight 587 memorial park on Beach 116th Street, was scheduled to begin at 9:05 a.m. Each year, the victims’ relatives mark the time of the crash, 9:16 a.m., by the toll of a bell. This year, the family members rang the bell before the mayor even arrived.

De Blasio arrived at about 9:25 a.m. He went straight to the podium but did not comment on his tardiness. “The Mayor regrets missing the tolling of the bell, but was glad to have an opportunity to mark this solemn day with the families of those lost on Flight 587, who have the continued support of this administration,” his office said later in a statement. The boat, a police boat, departed from Gracie Mansion and was thought to be faster than driving through rush hour traffic, according to de Blasio’s office. The trip was supposed to take 35 minutes but took closer to 50.

When de Blasio reached the podium, he said the annual event is a reminder of the community’s collective strength in times of adversity. “Let’s continue to pray for all those who were lost: the passengers, the crew members and the residents of this community that has been through so much over so many years – the residents lost in this strong and resilient community.” Families of the victims were outspoken about their frustration regarding the mayor not showing up on time. But afterward, the mayor’s office issued a statement from Belkis Lora, the spokesperson for

the families. “Mayor de Blasio’s office has supported us for months to organize our annual remembrance event,” she said. “The size or the look of the event is not as important for us as to have the opportunity to come here every year, get together as families affected by this unfathomable tragedy and remember the lives of those we lost that day. We hope to continue to work with the Mayor’s team for many more years.” Wednesday’s appearance marked the first time the Mayor has been to the west end of Rockaway since taking office.

Ask The Doc By Peter Galvin, MD

When I was a kid I was never home. Back then there weren’t any cell phones, cable TV or video games and Al Gore hadn’t yet invented the internet. There were 7 TV stations counting channel 13. So we were never home except when it rained. We played all kinds of sports, hide and seek, etc. We were constantly active. Mom didn’t have to push us out of the house but rather she had to make us promise to be home in time for dinner. Childhood obesity was almost non-existent. The only fast food was The Big Z where our Dads would take us after swim practice at Far Rockaway HS. Two burgers and a shake for a dollar. Fast forward to today where childhood obesity is an epidemic. Today’s kids stay home and play video games, eat snacks and have so many other home distractions. The government has to change school lunches to make them healthier and ban playing dodge ball and other sports because they are unfair. There is nothing wrong with McDonald’s as long as it’s once in a while, not daily. Because of childhood obesity diabetes is on the rise. All because of inactive

kids (and by and large I believe this problem has not yet fully impacted Rockaway) who don’t exercise and who eat too much. There are 2 main types of Diabetes. Type I, also called juvenile or insulin-dependent and Type II, also called adult-onset or non-insulin dependent. Insulin is a hormone that is made in the pancreas. In short insulin promotes the movement of sugar, known as glucose, from the bloodstream into the body’s cells where it is needed as the primary fuel for the body. A shortage of insulin causes glucose levels in the blood to rise causing Diabetes. In Type I Diabetes something, many believe a virus or auto-immune problem, destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. This is usually seen in children and young adults who must take insulin to replace what the pancreas cannot make. Type I is not usually inherited. On the other hand, Type II can be inherited and is often seen in obese adults. In Type II the pancreas does make insulin, just not enough. Simply put, it is thought that fat cells act as a sort of insulin sponge reducing the amount of circulating insulin and making sugar levels rise. Unfortunately the dramatic rise in child-

hood obesity is causing an epidemic of Type II Diabetes heretofore rarely seen in children. In my next column I will go into more specifics of causes and treatments for both types of Diabetes.

This column is published biweekly. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

The year 1969 in the Rockaways‌ By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & daughter, Katie Lucev

It was the 50th anniversary of the NC-4 Flight across the Atlantic in 1919, the 70th Anniversary of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department and plans for a Rockaway Museum were being discussed. The construction of Bay Towers Hi-Rise was approved. There was talk of a U.S. Park on the west end. Bids were in for Beach Channel High School construction while beach erosion was very bad at Bch. 95th Street. The Peninsula Library was soon to be a reality. Cub Scout Pack #47 was formed at St. Rose Church. Phoenix House for drug addicts opened in

Far Rockaway. Frank Sinatra was making a movie “The Detective in Arverne. Children playing with matches burned the old Curley’s Hotel to the ground on Bch. 116th Street. The population of the Rockaway’s was given at 89, 005. A subway extension to the Point was not wanted. More Hi-Rise buildings were coming. Men landed on the moon the same time Playland Amusement Park was celebrating its 40th Anniversary. For the season the newly built “Matterhorn ride was the super star attraction with an Olympic theme accompanied by loud music possibly, one “G. One ride was $.75 cents.

Surf Shape Is Worth It SurďŹ ng is a cruel sport. Usually people who try it out end up discovering they have now become completely and utterly obsessed. From 5-6 year olds through to adults in their 20’s through to the 40’s and beyond. It’s such a pervasive obsession that sooner or later you realize you have structured your entire life around going surďŹ ng. From the lies you tell your work about being late, or even taking off the entire day, hoping to actually squeeze in a couple of sessions that day. Humor in the lineup usually revolves around what excuse we gave someone to be in the water that weekday. In fact, one surďŹ ng publication had a side-bite col-

umn that used to list creative excuses for taking the day off from work to go surďŹ ng. I also feel sorry for the spouses and offspring of these obsessed surfers who will connivingly convince their family to go to a speciďŹ c holiday destination, all the while scheming how to score surf at this place. Wives usually have to bargain that they get a pool into the compromise, at the very least! But what is inspiring to me amongst all this horrible obsessing that we suffer from, it’s those people who have mastered their own obsession by balancing their lives to maximize their ocean time. There are many people I could list who have conquered this art, but

it’s these few blokes who are at the top of the game, the master legend Pat Reen through to Brandon D’Leo and those that work their seasonal job here and take the winter off in the tropics. However, one man in particular really inspires me, not just as a surfer, but a great human being. This guy is someone we all should know and revere, Jimmy Brady. Jimmy is a father and husband foremost, he is also a ďŹ re ďŹ ghter, a fantastic local surfer and now a phenomenal ironman. Before writing this column I asked a few mates for inspiration on what to write this week, Jimmy’s advice touched on a vital topic, one of which I have failed to persist at and reminded me of how I have let myself down over the last few years. Staying healthy, being super ďŹ t to maximize the value of your sessions and how all the beneďŹ ts of this can keep you mentally healthy as well. Jimmy said to me “Surf ďŹ tness... it’s winter, sessions are shorter, less frequent but much tougher... bigger swells, stronger currents, wearing restrictive gear, more weight from the thicker wetsuits with gloves and boots, so it’s more important to stay surf ďŹ t. Not only so you’re ready for the best time of the year for waves in the northeast BUT those all-important, much needed surf trips to warmer weather. You want to be able to get

right off plane and into good waves without wasting 2-3 days of a 7 day trip shaking the cobwebs off. “ Jimmy said he does a lot of swimming, â€œâ€Śwhich helps ones paddling. Lots of biking for leg strength, hot yoga for much needed exibility, plus it keeps your muscles warm when it’s freezing outside. Weight training keeping strong, plus keep any additional holiday lbs at bay. Using balance ball with body weight stimulate core and stabilizing muscles.â€? Watching Jimmy ying through the neighborhood on his bike, or sweating it out on a run to then see him that same day cranking a mega bottom turn to smash the lip apart on a wave is a great inspiration to be in shape. And with winter vacations coming up, not looking like a fat slob is another great beneďŹ t. In the coming weeks, Jimmy Brady will be providing a “Get Surf Fitâ€? workout of the week.

JUST THE BEST SPACE IN ROCKAWAY

WATERFRONT COLONIAL

Seriously. The Mayor came to the 587 Memorial by boat! He comes by boat (what was the subsidy?) 13 days after shutting down the ferry, for the little people. *** That was quick. A bus service that tried to fill the commuter hole left by the ferry has called it quits. Apparently it proved too costly (and didn’t help that few people ever found out about it). *** The statue of Christ that was vandalized in the St. Francis prayer garden on Rockaway Beach Boulevard last week was moved into the church across the street. The vandal or vandals removed the statue’s hands so the statue stands with arms outstretched but without hands. One parishioner said she was reminded of a prayer by St. Teresa of Avila who said, “Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours.” Seems like a calming, perhaps uplifting take on a disturbing event. *** You gotta have heart ! Damn Yankees, directed by John Gilleece, opens

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2014

Friday at the Rockaway Theater in Fort Tilden. The RTC always offers standing ovation worthy performances. *** Keep an eye on your flood insurance bills. Watch how increases are phased in. Speak with your agent about what can be expected over the next few years. A couple of homeowners came by to say they got a bigger increase than they should have and had to straighten it out. *** Speaking of flood insurance. A judge has ordered flood insurance providers to disclose any previously concealed drafts of engineering reports in Sandy-related lawsuits. Seems some companies are suspected of ditching engineer evidence of Sandy damage and instead re-writing reports that say houses had pre-existing conditions, such as weak foundations. Such findings let the insurers off the hook. The fallout from Sandy never ends. *** Speaking of Sandy fallout. Residents of the Belle Harbor Manor are

among those who applied for and got FEMA relief money after Sandy. FEMA is now trying to get the money back. The residents have retroactively been declared ineligible. Following Sandy, the residents were bounced around for four months. *** The memorial service to mark the crash of Flight 587 on November 12, 2001 remains well-attended thirteen years after the deadly crash. Mayor de Blasio attended and spoke continuing the mayoral tradition started by Michael Bloomberg. *** Rockaway events to be outsourced? Reports from Brooklyn say the Parks Department is looking to outsource event permits, at least for the Coney Island boardwalk. Craft fairs and surf contests and other events will need the approval of an event company, not the Parks Department. Brooklyn residents fear corporate logos and other staples of big companies will sanitize the current Coney Island vibe. Now you know, if Parks can hand over control of the Coney Island boardwalk, Rockaway will be subject to the same. Organize your event planning company now, so you can be ready when the Requests for Proposal is issued. *** Scam alert. This one just won’t go away. Scammers call telling you that they are technical support people calling about a virus or problem with your computer. They often say there

Page 23 is a problem with Windows or Microsoft. Calls out of the blue like this should be considered a scam immediately. You should hang up. If you have concerns about your computer, contact a local company. *** We get email news alerts based on the word “Rockaway.” We’re sometimes disappointed to learn it’s actually a story from Rockaway Township, New Jersey. This headline could have been fun: Bear fight caught on camera in Rockaway. A second media outlet reported: Bears Have Street Fight In Rockaway. For a second, we wondered if bears – like raccoons and possums – were now living in Rockaway or if Bears was just another name for a new street gang. *** Joint decision. The Mayor and Police Commissioner said people will no longer be arrested for low level marijuana offenses. Travel With Ease By Paulette Mancuso

At this time of year many of us travel via planes, trains and automobiles to visit family and friends. Once we get there, all is bliss – maybe – but getting there could be taxing physically, mentally and soully. (Soully is a made-up word and means in this context “to the core”.) Sitting for a long time on a plane or train and in a car can cause stiffness and lower or middle back

pain. If on a plane or train, just get up into the aisle or in the restroom area – depending on the size of the plane or train – and if in a car on a long drive, take a few moments during a “rest” stop. First, start with the arms by the side. Inhale and reach the arms up over the head, exhale lower the arms down to the side. Two more times like this moving with the inhales and the exhales. Second, inhale the arms up over

the head, interlace the fingers and flip the palms up towards the sky; stretch up using the torso, shoulders not up towards the ears, rather, back and down. Exhale arms to the sides. Two more times like this. Next, “Spine7”: inhale the arms up from the side of the body, exhale the arms down. Inhale the arms up, exhale the right arm leads toward the floor as the left reaches up and over the left ear stretching the left side of the body. Inhale both arms up and exhale the left arms leads toward the floor and the right arm reaches up and over the right ear stretching the right side. Inhale reach the right hand towards the left side of the body and the left arm behind for a gentle twist to the left; inhale the arms up and exhale to the right side for a gentle twist on the opposite side. Inhale the arms up and exhale hands come behind the body, clasp the hands reach the heart towards the sky and exhale fold over gently. What else have you got to do? The most important part of all of this is moving with the breath: inhaling and exhaling (through the nose). You can do any movement, just move in on the inhale and out

The Rockaway Times on the exhale. Physically, you can release the tension of being in one position too long. The calf stretch stimulates the circulation in the legs. Either sitting or standing, reach the heels up and down several times stretching the calf muscles. The other physical body concern while traveling is food. There’s so much out there now in the airports, stations, roads, that we really must think and make choices. It doesn’t take much to prepare some healthy foods to take on a trip. It just takes a little planning and you can have your healthy choice to eat on the road, plane, train rather than what is offered to you. I recently came across the company HUMAN: helping unite mankind and nutrition. This company is supplying vending machines with all healthy choices for drinks and snacks. It is a good alternative (even though packaged) if you don’t bring your own but they are not widespread yet. So, take a little time to bring some good nutritious eats for your trip. And, lastly, drink a little extra water. You’ll be good to go!

Rail Line Study Released Continued from page 6

or end up coming to a conclusion about the best use – that wasn’t our mission. Instead we hope to provide information to contribute to the debate.” There were three components to the study: the impact either plan would have on property values, a community survey and a transportation analysis. The study determined that renewed train service could allow for more than half a million trips every day. The study pointed out that, currently, residents in Nassau County have a faster commute time into Manhattan than residents in some parts of Queens. Reactivated service would mean connecting northern and southern Queens and allow for faster travel throughout the borough. In the case of either proposal, the effect on property values is determined by the property’s proximity to the right of way. In the case of the QueensWay, the nearest properties, those that abut the rail line, would likely see a negative impact on property values, according to the report, although possible buffers or other design features could lessen that effect. Properties farther away could see an increase in value. The same could be true if train service were reactivated, according to the report: properties located in the immediate vicinity of the rain line would decrease, unless they are near a station. Surround-

ing property values would likely increase because of increased access to transit, the study said. For the community survey portion of the study, surveys were distributed to 5,000 residents and 800 businesses along the right of way. The Queens College team received 363 valid responses from residents and 44 responses from businesses, which were representative sample of racial and ethnic groups, income levels and neighborhoods, according to the report. Residents of Richmond Hill nad Woodhaven produced 34.2 percent of the surveys while Rockaway produced 22.9 percent. The rest of the responses from Rego Park-Forest Hills-Glendale and Ozone Park-South Ozone Park-Lindenwood-Howard Beach. Slightly more than two thirds of those who answered the survey said they were familiar with the right of way. Nearly 60 percent said they were familiar with the QueensWay proposal; 52.4 percent were familiar with efforts to reactivate service. Of those who responded, 33.9 percent said they would prefer using the right of way for transportation out of all the options; 28.1 chose the QueensWay; 18.2 percent said a combination of the two plans was ideal; 10.2 percent said they wanted the right of way to be left alone. Surprisingly, higher numbers of individuals in Rockway favored the QueensWay option, while high

numbers of Forest Hills-Rego ParkGlendale residents chose train service. That was attributed to a low return rate of the surveys, according to Larson. According to the report, the results demonstrate a preference for the transportation option, but are within the margin of error of the survey – +-5.2 percent – and so cannot be taken as statistically significant. Marc Matsil, the director of the Trust of Public Land’s New York State Office, which is supporting the QueensWay, said his group was “delighted” by the results of the study. He said that much of the information in the Queens College study reflected the data that QueensWay supporters have been using to advocate for their plan – except, however, the cost of activating train service. “We’ve heard the number $6 billion,” Matsil said. “And it’s not just reactivation. They have to build the tracks, they have to build the transfer station, they have to build all the electrical outlets. There’s nothing there now except a lot of poison ivy and trash.” Matsil said the QueensWay is the more feasible – and fundable – option. And, still, some Queens residents remain unconvinced of both plans. Among those are Neil Giannelli, who lives in Woodhaven and has long been a vocal opponent of developing the right of way

at all. Residents along 98th Street of the neighborhood in particular are against the proposals because their properties are immediately adjacent to the rail line. Aside from concerns about their property values, they also worry about their safety and privacy. And for them, it’s just impractical to have a train running through their backyards. “But at least a train would benefit more people,” Giannelli said. Ultimately Giannelli is in favor of what he referred to as the “Mike Miller plan” – the Assemblyman, who represents Woodhaven, proposed a plan that would allow for all three groups to be happy: the park could be developed on one end, train service could be reenacted at the other and a central portion would be left alone in order to protect those Woodhaven residents. “We don’t think either side has the money,” Giannelli said. “What they have is rhetoric. And I still have faith in the good common sense of the American people.” For more information about the study, visit qcurban.org/office-ofcommunity-studies/our-work.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need The huge ‘Hollywood’ sign was put up in 1923 and originally spelt out the word ‘Hollywoodland’. The ďŹ nal four letters were removed in 1949 when the sign was rebuilt with 45ft-high letters. The sign, originally intended to last only a year, was declared a historical landmark in 1973. (And a fact you really don’t need: an actress committed suicide by leaping off the H in 1932) AN FBI analyst submitted a memo to top brass because he suspected the movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, promoted communism because it discredited bankers. The Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz were paid $50 a week for a 6 day week. Toto was paid $125. Salmon Chase was the guy on the now discontinued $10,000 bill. He was a Senator from Ohio, the Secretary of Treasury and Chase Bank was named in his honor. The Major Deegan Expressway is named after Major Deegan also know as William Francis Deegan. He was an architect and major in the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1928, Mayor Walker appointed him Tenement House Commissioner of New York City. He died while the roadway that now bears his name was being built. The building is there, the furs are gone. Jay and Jay was a “cold fur storageâ€? place on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 113th, In 1948 you could buy $100,000 of insurance on the furs for $2. Pittsburgh is the only city where all the major sports teams have the same colors: Black and gold. Because they both lost so many players to WWII military service, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles combined to become the Steagles during the 1943 season. We don’t know if it takes 15 minutes to save 15 percent or more on your car insurance.

We May Have to Go This Alone There are so many issues facing the Rockaway Peninsula, most of these can be attributed to our size, our geographic location and our economics! After seeing the rapid removal of the temporary oating Rockaway ferry barge on Monday from Beach 108th Street I was assured of one thing, Mayor de Blasio is our number one issue! Mayor de Blasio is hell bent on keeping the Rockaway Peninsula down. Sure, he’ll tell us all of the wonderful things he has planned. He oats in and drops off a homeless shelter; on his way out, takes the ferry with him. The last time I checked we are supposed to be a government of the people. There was not one greater item requested by the people of the Rockaway Peninsula

in this year’s city budget than the Rockaway ferry! The mere fact that he ignored the will of the Rockaway people, every Borough President, dozens of city council members and top elected ofďŹ cial, shows us that he does not like to live up to his oath ofďŹ ce to uphold the Constitution of The United States of America. If things don’t change real soon for the people of the Rockaway Peninsula, I believe it will be in The Peninsula’s best interest to secede from the City of New York. We need to either become our own city like Long Beach, Long Island or our own County like Richmond County. This way we could fulďŹ ll our own destiny and The Rockaway Peninsula will no longer be the laundry bin of The City of New York!

Melt the butter in a small pan, or in a bowl in the microwave. Use a spoon to skim off the solids so most of them are gone. (Note: It’s easier if you go ahead and melt the whole stick, the reserve the rest for another use) Drizzle 4 tablespoons of the skimmed butter into the bowl with the squash. Add salt and pepper, and toss to combine. Pour the squash onto a baking sheet and spread them into a single layer. Bake 20-25 minutes, then crank up the heat to 400 degrees and continue roasting for 15 minutes or so, until the squash is sizzling and golden brown around the edges. Remove the pan from oven and set aside. Grate the parmesan and sprinkle it over the squash. Toss quickly so that the cheese won’t melt (it should only soften), then transfer the mixture to a plate. Toss the pine nuts in a skillet over medium-high heat, stirring frequently. Add those to the plate with the squash and toss to combine. Add more parmesan if you like, and then serve the squash in small dishes or over a salad tossed in vinaigrette.

ST. CAMILLUS SPECIAL OLYMPICS JOIN THE CIRCLE OF CHAMPIONS By Rose Gurry

On October 10, 2014 St. Camillus Special athletes journeyed to Maryland for a long Columbus Day weekend. The trip was planned by Coach J Featherston and Maryland details were provided by Noreen Ryan. A large number of athletes and their families traveled by bus ( Ed Wilmarth was our excellent driver) and an equally large number of athletes and families as well as friends from Rockaway drove to Maryland. On Saturday. we attended an Annapolis Navy game. At the game we met three Rockaway midshipmen, T. J. Stackpole, Justin Zemser and Sean Casey. We tailgated as per customary. We ate and danced.in a light rain as hearty Rockaway people do. At the game it was quite cool, but the rain had stopped. Navy won by many touchdowns, On Saturday evening we ate a various restaurants in Annapolis. Sunday dawned sunny and warm. We had a tour of Fort McHenry

whose bombardment during the War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem. After that, we had a free afternoon in Baltimore Inner Harbor. Many athletes and the families went to the aquarium while others toured the harbor area and went on ferry rides.‘ On Sunday evening we decided to stay at the hotel.. What a good decision! The athletes literally filled the pool and along with music they swam and sang. After that we had the whole hotel lounge to ourselves where Dan Gorry provided more music and some athletes danced the night away. Other athletes watched football while the adults played games. Monday we headed home. We have so many good memories and hope to do another road trip soon; It is because of the many generous donations that our athletes are able to enrich their lives in so many positive ways.

The High School and Collegiate cross country seasons are coming to a close with the New York State Federation Championship meet in Wappingers Falls this Saturday, as well as NCAA Regionals at various sites. Alex Goldberg captured the CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens individual championship in a time of 13:39 and then led Archbishop Molloy to a 5th place finish in the CHSAA Intersectional championships, sending Molloy to the Federation meet for the first time in over 20 years. Jackie and Tess Gallagher placed second and third at the BQ championships and will also be going to the Federation meet with cousin and Bishop Kearney teammate Colleen Gallagher. Also heading to Wappingers Falls will be Carolyn Crocker of Molloy and Jackie Thompson of Notre Dame Academy. Aiden Donahue tore up the frosh circuit, posting a blazing 8:55 time for Xavier in the CHSAA Freshmen Championships, before getting a taste of the varsity course with an impressive 14:51 at the Intersectionals. Teammate Michael McGuinness also had a strong season for Xavier. Kayleigh Gilroy was the top local on the girls side placing 5th at CHSAA BQ in 11:22 while Sinead Gallagher added to the clan’s lore with a solid debut for Mary Louis. Yet another, brother Brendan Gallagher notched 14:40 in the Intersectionals as Cathedral Prep’s top man on the varsity. Mary Ellen Woods and Kayla Rayder prepped for their preferred Indoor season while hitting the trails for Molloy as did Frank McVeigh, James Lunny and Peter Tuffey for Xavier.

Devin Rocks and Kathleen Woods will get to run in the familiar confines of Van Cortlandt Park for The NCAA Division I regionals on Saturday. Rocks hit a season best 26:19 at the Princeton Invitational and followed with a 26:36 at the Atlantic 10 championships for Fordham. Woods’ season included a 21:21 5K for Fairfield. Conor Gallagher earned 2nd team East Coast Conference honors for Molloy College after an 8th place finish at the conference meet and hit a best time of 25:31 for 8K during the season. Younger brother Liam joined him this year and placed 21st at ECC and ran a 27:25 best. They both head to the NCAA Division II Northeast regional. Jimmy Buckley was tops for Scranton at the Landmark Conference meet and posted 28:02 as a season best. He will lead Scranton to the NCAA Division III Mideast regional at Newville, PA. Patrick Goldberg followed his Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year season in 2013 with a first team all-Skyline performance after a 3rd place championship meet finish, and a 27:18 best at CW Post. He will be joined at the NCAA Division III Atlantic regional in Rochester by his brother James who will conclude his collegiate career at the meet after a season that included a 30:18 and 24th at the Skyline championships. Together they have represented Rockaway well and thank their CYO coaches including John Edwards, Paul Richter, Steve Gifford, Joe Featherston, Felix Gilroy, Jonathan Walters, John Kane and Dennis Singleton who gave them their start. In the first half SFDS came out strong with midfielders Chloe Murphy, Kaylyn Sullivan, Nicole Moran, Julia Redpath, Kaitlyn Potter, Kiera Price, and Siobhan Twomey keeping Blessed Trinity pinned on their side of the field. lentless attacks by the Blessed Trinity forwards, but the SFDS defense of Colleen Bambury, Bridget Donnelly, MacKenzie Markle, Jillian Schneider, and Lauren Kelly played tough. Goalkeeper Corinne Connelly played the game of the year with a number of saves, including a diving save to knock the ball away, then quickly spinning and diving to cover the ball on the rebound. Blessed Trinity continued attacking with one shot landing on the top of the net, another bouncing off the crossbar, and finally scoring on a high volley to make it 2-1. Midway through the second half SFDS took control adding a goal from Maeve Murnan

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

I’m Going To Live To Be 100 The American Heart Association has linked the ownership of pets with a reduced risk of heart disease and greater longevity. Studies have found that pet owners are less likely to become depressed and have lower blood pressure in stressful situations than non pet owners. If this is true than I am going to survive to a very ripe old age. Allow me to explain. Presently, the Mahon family household on West 12th Road in Broad Channel is home to myself, my beautiful wife Grace (aka: “she who must be obeyedâ€?) and my two lovely teenage daughters, Amy and Victoria. Unfortunately none of the Mahon women have ever met a sick, injured, abused, abandoned or lost animal that they didn’t immediately fall in love with. Consequently, our domicile is also shared with 1 dog (Zach), 3 cats (Louie, Sasha “Bâ€? and Bailey), two guinea pigs (Tom and Jerry), 2 turtles (Crush and Squirt), 1 rabbit (Belle) and a bearded dragon named Winky. We also had 2 white lab rats, Michaelangelo and Donatello, and a 50 gallon tank full of tropical ďŹ sh (no we didn’t name the ďŹ sh) but they all disappeared after Super Storm Sandy. Shortly after Sandy we also adopted a young abused pit bull we named Dolce from the Guardians of Rescue but she passed away, despite rigorous

medical intervention, after suffering kidney failure several months ago. All our animals are rescues having been assimilated into the Mahon Clan over my vociferous and completely ignored objections, by Grace, Amy and Vicky who all promised (with the utmost sincerity) to care for, feed and clean up after them. Now I’ve been around for some 64 years so I should have immediately realized that promises regarding pets are like eggs, they are easily broken. Needless to say, being retired, the role of care-giver, waiter and janitor for our household zoo has fallen upon my shoulders as all the Mahon women are all otherwise preoccupied working and going to school. Being an early riser my day starts around 5 am when I am greeted in the kitchen by loud squeaks and whistles from the guinea pigs who have to be fed even before I start the morning coffee. If I’m lucky, a quick sniff of their cage will hopefully indicate I can go another day before cleaning and disinfecting their habitat. Then it’s on to the turtles. The older turtle, Crush, has gotten so big I am thinking of changing his name to Godzilla. He begs to be fed by hand but as I am somewhat attached to all of my ďŹ ngers, I now simply drop his food into the tank.

ADVERTISE IN THE ROCKAWAY TIMES 718-634-3030

The younger (and smaller) turtle, Squirt, is maintained in a separate tank to keep them from killing each other. On second thought perhaps I should rename both of them HatďŹ eld and McCoy. Then it’s time to feed the 3 cats which takes some time as each fur ball lives on a separate oor of the house with its own litter box which also has to be tended to daily lest the house take on the aroma of a kennel. Our cat Louie lives on the 1st oor and suffers from a brain injury which interferes with his balance. Oftentimes as he is scratching himself he will start to lean over and falls to the oor with a confused look on his face. Our rabbit, Belle, lives uncaged in our 2nd oor bedroom with our cat Sasha “Bâ€? (the “Bâ€? stands for bitch and she is!) and has the run of the entire 2nd oor. Thankfully, she is litter trained and her hygiene habits are better than any of the cats. Besides her poop is small, hard and doesn’t smell! The bearded dragon lives in a large terrarium along with our other cat Bailey in my youngest daughter’s bedroom on the 3rd oor. The lizard’s diet includes live crickets causing me to examine the bedroom rather closely after each feeding. Last, but certainly not least, it’s then time to feed our dog Zach. A rescue from a kill shelter years ago, the dog immediately grew attached to the 3 females of the house and even though I am the one who feeds him, scratches his butt and cleans up after him, he makes it very clear that he will visit the wrath of God upon me should I even raise my voice to any of “his girlsâ€?. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining. After all, according to professional medical authority, with all these animals under our roof, I should live to be a hundred years of age easily. I just wish I could stop licking my arms, snifďŹ ng the mattress and turning myself around 3 or 4 times each night before I lie down in bed! Broad Channel - why would anyone want to live anywhere else!

The Fishing Report By Matt Whalen

Well anglers it’s that time of the year again, the last few weekends of good weather are ďŹ nally upon us. Just about time to pull the boats out and winterize them. We had a record Fluke season that won’t soon be forgotten. Let’s hope for even a better one next year ! As of right now we have some bass action going on. The bass have been reported on both the inside and outside of the Rockaway area. We checked in with Big Ron at Big Ron’s bait and tackle in Howard beach and Ron told us that the striped bass are IN ! The bass are hitting on “bass eelsâ€? at night, bunker, and clams. Ron also told us that the marauding blue ďŹ sh have shown up in force. The blue ďŹ sh are eating lots of bunker and are increasing in size and numbers in and around Rockaway and the Marine Parkway Bridge. Ron also said that Black ďŹ sh are also increasing in size and numbers. Porgies are all just about gone. Well, that’s it anglers, the party is “ONâ€? for ďŹ shing around Rockaway during the fall run. The weather is going to change very soon, so get out there and ENJOY IT ! Until Next time Anglers !

How do Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito take care of their “moral obligations?

Central Park Five settlement:

$41 million

Benefits for injured police officers:

Nothing

Mayor de Blasio paid off his political debts by adding $26 million to the Central Park Five settlement over City lawyers’ objections. But he and the Speaker think it’s just too expensive to give recently-hired NYPD officers the same disability beneďŹ ts as every other police officer in New York State. Their priorities speak for themselves...

From Inside The Restaurant Biz (From time to time – as often as possible! – we’ll bring you stories and inside info from people in the bar / restaurant business. We haven’t settled on a column name yest though we do like Tequila Mockingbird and Pour Judgment. In this week’s launch, Robert Kaskel of Thai Rock, offers a noteveryday-customer exchange). Not growing up in the restaurant business helps me see some situations at this later stage of my life with childlike eyes and wonder and it can be full of surprises, sometimes quite rewarding. It’s so easy to get caught up in the craziness, but allow me to share one recent event last weekend. A server, concerned about a customer, came to my wife and said she was crying and in tears. My wife asked the server to check on the customer. The server reported back that the customer was so pleased with her food that she could not stop crying while she ate. After the meal, the customer asked to speak with our chef, Karog. She went into the kitchen, grabbed a hold of our chef and began to

cry again, hugging and squeezing Karog and letting her know how much she enjoyed her cooking. This is a ďŹ rst for me and it really touched me and more speciďŹ cally helped me put into perspective how we all can touch each other. Since I’ve known my wife, I have been convinced that she demonstrates her love through her preparation and serving of food and drink. I also see that she receives love by seeing people enjoy her efforts. Karog, her sister, is like this too. And thinking about it, so was my mom and both my grandmothers and many other important females in my life. Giving and receiving love comes in many forms and is demonstrated differently, but what it has in common is the power to move people; to bring people to a higher level; to evoke passion, sympathy and pleasure; to energize. To my customer that received our love, thank you for accepting our food and sharing with us the joy you experienced – and thank you for reminding me how important the simple pleasures are. You are a beautiful person.
