Joe Keenan Named Prez Of Graybeards By Katie McFadden

Stathis says he didn’t plan on remaining on the board but members, including Keenan, insisted that he stay. “I think I’m very fortunate to have Steve on the board and I think the transition into my role as president will be smooth because of that,” Keenan said. In addition to guidance of Stathis, Keenan is confident that the roughly 200 members of the group will help by continuing to do the great work they’ve done for more than a decade. “Fortunately we have a lot of supportive members who are willing to volunteer their time to help others, which makes our job much easier.” Along with a new president, The Graybeards have also decided to enact term limits, so the era of a 13-yearpresident is no longer. “I believe in change. I think change is good for the group,” Stathis said. Keenan will be able to serve as president of the group for two years and can opt to continue for another two years if he is re-elected. What makes being a Graybeard so special? For Keenan, it’s giving back. “I think a lot of the people who have volunteered in the past have gotten a lot out of helping others. I think that’s why a lot of people do it. I know I feel that way. We’ve tried to do a lot to help people who are going through rough times. “I have very tough shoes to fill, but I’m looking forward to it,” Joe Keenan, the newly elected president of The Graybeards said. A Rockaway resident since 1985 and a member of the nonprofit Graybeards since it started in 2001, Keenan is filling the shoes of the organization’s first, and now former president Steve Stathis. Stathis announced in August that he was stepping down from the role that he held since The Graybeards began, but would continue to remain an active member. In a meeting this week, members of the volunteer group voted for Keenan as their next leader. “It’s a nice honor,” Keenan said. “I hope to do the same good work that Steve did.” Among that work is to continue to fulfill the mission of The Graybeards. “I want the group to continue to be a grassroots organization in the Rockaways that helps people in need, which is what we’re all about.” Stathis is ready to pass along the torch to Keenan. “I think Joe’s great. He’s been a board member since 2002. He’s very involved with the day-to-day business. He’s also an attorney and very smart,” Stathis said. “Joe is approachable and understands what we’re trying to do and I think his best attribute is that he doesn’t have an ego. We’re a volunteer organization. If you have an ego, it doesn’t fit well.” Keenan hopes to continue the activities that the Graybeards have done in the past. Among some of the annual events are a dinner dance, Harlem Magic Masters, the Spring Spruce-Up, the Family Fun Run and a blood drive. Most importantly, the mission of the Graybeards is to “help our neighbors in their time of need,” Stathis said. Since its beginnings, the Graybeards have donated more than $2 million to those who needed assistance. For Stathis, one of the hardest parts about being president “is you get to hear all of the bad news in the neighborhood. Sometimes you have to go face-to-face with the people who are suffering. It can be upsetting at times to go and see some of the stuff that people live with on a day-to-day basis like illness and unemployment,” Stathis said. The Graybeards were an integral support system within the community following Hurricane Sandy as they were able to raise $1.4 million and disperse it to more than 800 families in need. “Our Sandy funding is winding down and we’re running out of money and requests for help at this point. What we do next is just going to depend on the future and seeing what’s in store,” Keenan said. No matter what future challenges the community may be faced with, Keenan is confident that he will have the

An argument over a woman may have been the cause of a Q52 bus driver stabbing another man, police said. Ephraim Henry, 30, allegedly got out of the bus at Beach 67th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Arverne on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m..
The Secret Sandy Claus Project, which was started as a result of Hurricane Sandy, will partner with the Marines’ Toys for Tots program this year, according to the Project’s founder, Michael Sciaraffo. Button Busting In last week’s column in which I noted the shortest list in Rockaway is the Men’s Best Dressed List I failed to mention the many men who have but one suit or, for that matter, one pair of dress pants. Which is perfectly fine except for when it’s time to actually put them on. See, our finely tailored men likely bought the suit when they were feeling good, in fighting trim. But they soon learn things have changed a bit since then. Now, surprise, surprise, the waistband is a tad tight. In
other words, no friggin chance. It’s a known fact that Rockaway men have laid down flat on the bed hoping their stomachs will flatten enough so they might -using all their strength – stretch the pants’ waistband enough to close the button. But alas, sometimes that doesn’t work. The button and the buttonhole just refuse to come together. They think about switching to jeans but they’re not even sure if those will fit because they’ve been wearing shorts or loose sweat pants for 5 months.

If the good times have expanded the belly and getting those dress pants to snap closed is a lost cause, the Rockaway man still has something to cling to. First, he hopes his suit jacket will button close. His next hope is that the belt will close as well. See, if he can close the jacket and the belt, he’s home free. He knows he can attend said function with his pants unbuttoned, just held up by a belt, hidden by the suit jacket. You can recognize these sartorial slobs, of course. Chances are, if a man’s got a suit jacket barely closed by a single button with a thread about to snap he’s got open pants syndrome. Things are always in danger of getting ugly fast. The button on the suit might pop, the jacket will fly open. The trusty belt is there for all to see the failed connection of button and buttonhole. And then the belt itself might come under scrutiny. It’s a belt with an added hole. Because the belt’s pin couldn’t quite get into the last hole when he stretched it around his waist, the innovative man has added an extra hole with a fork or sewing needle. More likely a fork. Former Speaker of The House Tip O’Neill used to have three
The Rockaway Times styles of suits. Fat, fatter, and fattest. He was always ready no matter what diet he’d been on. But that was easy for a guy who had to wear a suit every day. Rockaway men wear bathing suits more often than suit suits. Which is why an idea I heard makes so much sense. For all the newspapers and nail salons around here we need a men’s accessory store. It could even be a rental place. The store would offer nothing but neck extenders, white shirts, belts, and black socks. Just one day necessities. Nothing lasts much longer anyway. Men know white shirts are temporary things. You buy one and then have no need for it for months. When you go to the closet to put it on again it’s no longer white. It’s kinda yellow, kinda gray. You hold it up to the light. What the hell? You have to go buy another. Maybe you’ve seen that pink truck, The End of The A, a mobile boutique for women. There should be a man’s version, maybe painted in camouflage. Instead of End of the A it could be called Look Good For A Day. Hey, it’s a start. What more do you want?

Prayer Garden Statue Vandalized
A Sacred Statue statue that normally stands in the prayer garden of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church has been removed from its stand after being vandalized. It was reported that the outstretched hands were cut off. Possible motive and other details were not made available as police officers near the scene on Wednesday would not comment. Crime scene tape was placed the prayer garden entrance. When reached by phone, staff at St. Francis also declined to comment. The Brooklyn Diocese, of which St. Francis is a part, did not
return a request for comment before deadline.
All Local Pols Get Re-Elected By Bianca Fortis
Gov. Andrew Cuomo will serve New York State for another four years after he won re-election on Tuesday. He won 52.78 percent of the total vote, according to the New York State Board of Elections. His new lieutenant governor will be Kathy Hochul. Cuomo’s main challenger, Republican Rob Astorino, had secured 39.18 percent of the vote throughout the state.
In the borough of Queens alone, Cuomo won 73.46 percent of the votes cast. State Sen. James Sanders, who was running uncontested, won re-election with almost 89 percent of the votes cast. State Sen. Joseph Addabbo also won reelection, with 52.28 percent of votes. His Republican challenger, Michael Conigliaro, had won 42.67 percent. State Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder won 79.07 percent of the
votes cast. He was running unopposed. Congressman Gregory Meeks will also return to his office, having won more than 80 percent of the votes cast in his race. n other statewide races, Thomas DiNapoli was re-elected as the Comptroller and Eric Schneiderman was re-elected as Attorney General. All three proposals listed on the ballot were approved. The first changes the state’s redistricting
procedures: a redistricting commission will be responsible for determining new district lines, rather than having the Legislature do so. The second allows for paperless bill distribution in the Legislature. The third, the Smart Schools Bond Act, will allow the state to borrow up to $2 million for school capital projects if they are used for new technology, new pre-K classrooms or replacing classroom trailers.

fore with a lot less clout, he’s wondering if being Mayor would be a good way to finish a career. *** Steve Stathis of the Graybeards officially stepped down as President of the venerable organization on Monday night. Long time board member, Joe Keenan, was voted in as Steve’s replacement. In a brief address to the members, Keenan said he felt like John Adams following George Washington. *** Even you non-fishermen must be impressed with some of the catches seen in Matt Whalen’s Fishing Report. This week’s a whopper (caught off Breezy). *** Keep an eye out for news regarding the NY Rising money. One of the projects selected by the Rockaway West committee was the beautification of Beach 108th Street. Needless to say, it would have been made more beautiful by the presence of a ferry. *** Speaking of the ferry, can you believe the ferry dock was removed on Monday! They closed the service on Friday night and the dock was gone the first work day that followed. Anyway, The City never, ever, ever moves this fast. Dear Editor: Over $300 million to fund all day school for four-year-olds. Over $500 million to fund Access-A-Ride service. Over $8 million to fund ID cards for illegals. And they “couldn’t” find the money to subsidize the ferry so seniors can go to Manhattan and taxpaying residents have a reliable means to get to work? Liars, all of them. You get what you vote for.

Ferry Beat Buses Dear Editor: Bus service is never guaranteed to get me into work on time, hence the QM16 losing ridership due to buses arriving late in Rockaway and sometimes, a bus just not showing up at all. I had to stop taking the QM16 as it was getting me into work 30 minutes late every day with the same slow trek on the way home. At least nine times out of 10, if I take the A train, I can be guaranteed a one hour and 40 minute trek into midtown Manhattan where I work. In closing, bus service is not needed, the ferry service should be kept.

Ferry Fail and Future
Dear Editor: (Re: Rockaway Times, 10/29) There was so much missed here. I really hope the local politicians, residents and business leaders don’t go quietly away. I’m very confident that the passenger data used in the EDC’s analysis was not representative of actual traffic and definitely not of potential traffic. The ferry ran on extensions and was never marketed or advertised in any way. People typically are not drawn to use something that they don’t know about or that they think is temporary and going away. The ridership that could be derived with a long-term commitment and a marketing plan would change things dramatically. People from neighboring communities and tourists would come, use it and spend money and time enjoying the area. I’m also very confident that the riders would be willing to pay a higher price for the service. Lastly, it’s two years after Sandy and the best and most obvious way to help out locals is to keep the ferry in place permanently as property values and business revenues would soar as the Rockaways could be promoted as and considered a beautiful beachfront gem that is less than a one-hour beautiful, comfortable and reliable boat ride to and from Manhattan.

A Slap In The Face There was hope for an eleventh hour reprieve. All the local reps met with Mayor de Blasio on Thursday, October 30th just a day before the ferry was scheduled to conclude service. They came away with nothing. Nothing to improve transportation options for Rockaway residents. Although they got the Mayor to resist making Rockaway worse off by getting him to halt the placement of a new homeless shelter. Thanks for not making things worse, Mister Mayor! City Councilman Donovan Richards wasted no time in broadcasting the news that the homeless shelter was being shelved. He left the meeting with the Mayor and tweeted about the shelter news but made no mention of the ferry failure. About an hour later, his colleagues issued a joint statement about their disappointment in the Mayor’s decision regarding the ferry. Richards was not included in the joint statement. Apparently he wasn’t all that concerned with the ferry going away. Later that night, he tweeted again. He said everyone could sleep soundly because the NY Knicks basketball team had won. Maybe Richards knew the meeting with the Mayor was a farce, a waste of time. What happened on Monday morning illustrates just how futile the meeting was. The meeting was Thursday; the ferry dock was actually removed by the following Monday morning! When does the City ever move that fast?! Well, it doesn’t, of course. The dock was leased to Seastreak by a third party and they came and fetched it. But no matter the owner, the symbolism was clear. The City wasn’t offering the ferry. And a tugboat pushed away any lingering hope.

Artist to Turn Bungalow into Community Art Space By Bianca Fortis BIANCA@ROCKAWAYTIMES.COM
For years, Brooklyn-based artist Robyn Hasty had envisioned opening a community-based space for artists to work. She never planned for it to be located in New York City because of the high cost of property here, she said. “But one day this bungalow just showed up and I could afford it,� she said. Hasty is working to transform the Rockaway Beach home, which was flooded by Hurricane Sandy, into an exhibition space with room for an artist-in-residency program. She had completed some art projects in Rockaway a few years ago, and was also interested in the community – even more so after Hurricane Sandy struck. “There’s something about the up-
heaval in that kind of crisis and thinking about ways space can address those issues from a social perspective and a climate perspective,� she said. “That made it even more important to me, that connection to the Rockaways.� She said she envisions creating a space for artists to focus on their work for one or two months at a time, ideally focusing on issues such as climate change and flooding – problems that impact Rockaway, as well as other Sandy-impacted neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs. “New York City has some problems with art and artists and having space for them because it’s so expensive,� Hasty said. After purchasing the bungalow, Hasty learned she would need to work with an architect to complete the work on the house. Through

some other art groups she was able to connect to New York Citybased design firm Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects, who will complete the work pro bono. One of the principals, Stephan Jaklitsch said he and his partner, Mark Gardner, became interested in Hastyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s project, her vision and her interest in using art to reach out to the community. Part of what drew them to the Stilt City project was â&#x20AC;&#x153;seeing some of the other construction going on in response to Sandy and being turned off by that and realizing we could do something different,â&#x20AC;? Jaklitsch said. The firm will design low-cost features that will help prevent future damage from flooding in bad weather events. This includes using porous materials that allow for natural drainage, using marinegrade plywood that helps prevent mold growth and water damage, and an extended, sloping roof that will provide space to store items in the event of a flood. One aspect is just accepting there will be a certain amount of damage, but modifying the house in a way that it can be easily repaired without damaging its structure. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important to us is to try to maintain a smaller scale of structure and how it relates to the street,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a charming little vernacular building, but we want to also try to imbue it with a little bit of dignity, give it a sense of architecture.â&#x20AC;? Ultimately, it could be a model for other resiliency measures across the peninsula. The group will work to raise $100,000 for construction materials through the online fundraising website Kickstarter. Recently a neighbor remarked to me about how the youth of today “are out of control running around the streets, drinking beer, and have no respect for their elders. In our day we did nothing of that sort! You should say something about that in your column.” Not giving his complaint much thought, I nodded in quiet agreement but his statement, which I fully believe was heartfelt, got me to thinking about some of my youthful antics. I’ll be the first to admit that I got into my share of trouble wandering the neighborhood with my friends back in the early 1960’s as a youngster growing up in Woodside, Queens. If we were bored we would execute a couple of “ring and runs” (aka “Ding, Dong, Ditch”) and laugh ourselves silly when some adult would open the door and, seeing us running away up the street, would unleash a stream of expletives that would make a dock worker proud. That game lost much of its luster when, after one particular “ring and run”, a rather annoyed and very scary looking male adult bolted out of his front door after us brandishing a tire iron and threatening to cave our stupid skulls in. We ran for almost 3 blocks until the local beat cop, probably wondering what the scary looking adult intended to do with the tire iron he was waving around, finally stopped all of us. After a rather short discussion, the cop ordered us to apologize to the adult. My buddy Bobby, who had a big mouth that often overrode his brain, retorted, “Listen Joe Bolton, all we did was ring a bell.... this idiot tried to crack our heads!” [Note: back then “Joe Bolton” was a derogatory street term for a Police Officer. If you are still confused... google the name.] Immediately thereafter, the officer introduced us to his night stick and administered what we would come to know as an “attitude adjustment”. We quickly discovered just how big a welt a baton could leave on your posterior! On those (not so rare) occasions when we were able to procure a 6
can of beer or a pack of cigarettes and a big mouth might get you a whack on the rear or, at worst, a ride home in a patrol car where you were delivered to your parents for additional verbal (and physical) mayhem which could last for days. On the other hand, get caught with a joint or some pills and a big mouth...that was a big deal! It was a one way ticket to the 108th Police Precinct via a squad car where you usually received an “attitude adjustment” before being delivered to the Desk Sergeant who would issue you a “JD” card and then place your butt in the “meditation room” (cell) to “think about what you had done” while awaiting the arrival of your parents and, of course, some additional verbal (and physical) mayhem when you arrived home. Making matters worse, once you received your first “JD” card, every cop in the precinct knew who you were and considered you “fair game” and if you even looked at a “Joe Bolton” sideways, or forgot to address him as “sir”, it was off to the Precinct with you again. There was also a period of time when we thought ourselves to be “tough guys”. Some of us even took to carrying a switchblade knife or brass knuckles. They were easily purchased at that time but they posed more of a danger to us who carried them than anyone else. Our “bad boy” era ended ignobly when Bobby tried to sneak into a peep
The Rockaway Times show in Times Square and the security guard grabbed him and, after patting him down, found a switchblade on him and turned him over to New York City’s finest. We didn’t see Bobby again for almost a week and when we did he was talking out of the side of his mouth. Guns? We never even thought of guns. A gun was something you got when you got drafted, as most of us ultimately were. If you were caught with a gun and were lucky enough not to have been shot, you had a definite date with an arraignment judge and could then look forward to spending a whole lot of quality time with some guy name “Turk” on Rikers Island. None of us wanted to meet “Turk” so guns were never an issue with us. As we grew older life intervened and we grew tired of our rather one sided interactions with local law enforcement and our free time activities started to mellow. A little dust up out east called Viet Nam finally intervened and myself and most of my buddies finally got our guns...legally....with the United States Marine Corps where we discovered the art of “attitude adjustments” was taken to an entirely new level by Parris Island Drill Instructors. Rockaway Bar Crawl Set for Saturday By Katie McFadden
–– It’s a bar crawl, food tour and contest wrapped into one. And it’s called Rockaway Scrawl. The fun is is set to take place this weekend. If you enjoy drinking, like a bit of a competition or you were a fan of the Taste of Rockaway event, the Rockaway Scrawl event on Saturday, November 8 might be for you. Participants will have a chance to visit 12 participating Rockaways restaurants or bars that will have specials throughout the day during their operating hours. The specials start as early as 9 a.m. and go on until the late night hours at the participating bars. The businesses that will be part of the first Scrawl include Pico, The Wharf, The Kerry Hills, Brendan’s, Dalton’s, Playland Motel, Whit’s End Pizza, Uma’s, Sayra’s, Thai Rock, Bungalow Bar and the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. A “Scrawl Card,” which is a game card that entitles a holder to get special discounts, can be purchased for $10 at any one of the participating establishments before Saturday or
the day of. The specials at each business will vary depending on the place and time of day. For instance, Pico will be offering 25 percent off brunch between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. plus $2 tacos and $3 Pacificos and Modelo Especial beers throughout the day. Kerry Hills will have $5 Guinness pints and $2 Bud pints throughout the day, but $5 Irish whiskey’s and $4 Fireball shots between 6 and 8 p.m. Dalton’s will have half price appetizers and burgers and $3 pints all day plus two-for-one drinks between 2 and 6 p.m. Thai Rock will offer a $28 three-course-meal, plus $3 beer and $5 mixed drink specials. Many of the places like will have live music in the evening. The Scrawl is also a contest. Participants will collect stickers, each worth five points. The person with the most points will win $25 gift certificates to each establishment for a total of $300. Whoever comes in second will get $15 gift certificates to each place for a total of $180. The maximum points available are 200.
Participants who have a “Scrawl Card” will receive a sticker when they purchase any food item or drink at one of the restaurants or bars. A second sticker will be given to those who go to the establishment during a certain time. For example, Thai Rock will participate in the Scrawl between 12 p.m. and 2 a.m., but those who stop by before 6 p.m. or after 10 p.m. will receive a bonus sticker. Six out of the 12 businesses will also give participants a chance to get a third sticker by answering a trivia question about the establishment. For instance, if you go to Sayra’s and you’re able to tell the bartender what the name Sayra means, you’ll get a trivia sticker. There are also bonus trivia questions on the card that can simply be written in, such as, “What is Rockaway Rod’s real name?” More bonus points can be obtained by getting Scrawl creator Max Power’s signature. Matt Preis aka Max Power is a promoter and DJ from Brooklyn who
moved to Rockaway last year. He organized the Silly Dance Contest at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club in August and helped develop the first Taste of Rockaway event in December 2013. Power held similar events in Brooklyn and has brought them to Rockaway to promote the area in a fun way. Power says the name “Scrawl” is inspired by the haphazard style of writing something down quickly. “It’s a version of a bar crawl that has people moving in a way of fast writing. Everyone is going their own way along the bar crawl.” Unlike typical bar crawls, in which large groups follow a set agenda, participants can go to each business whenever they want throughout the day. Although 12 businesses may seem like a lot to conquer in one day, Power says the freedom of the Scrawl makes it possible. Those who want an early start can kick it off with brunch at The Wharf, Pico or Bungalow Bar. “It may seem

Get your gear on! As we inch closer and closer to colder weather and colder water we need our surf gear. Problem with surf gear contrary to many other sports is that it’s damn expensive. Our great local surf stores serve up a great selection of wetsuits, surf accessories like booties, and they do a great job on discounting them for us locals. Make sure you check out Boarders, Breakwater Surf Co. and the Rockaway Beach Surf Shop. Grab a few extra bars of cold water wax while you’re at it! But there are times when they simply don’t have the item you
need. Some of the other places I wanted to mention to get gear is online. As many parents know, buying wetsuits for kids/teens gets expensive when they keep growing out of them at a fast clip. Sometimes those hand-me-downs aren’t the best either, with torn seems and little holes that fill a suit up with freezing water, cutting your session from hours into minutes. I have compiled a list of sites that periodically will have insane wetsuit deals, amongst other items. It’s just a matter of checking the sites frequently, or even better, become a mem-
ber and subscribe to their list to get their email blasts telling you of their deals that day. Bonus is that you will find deals on snowboard & ski equipment along with accessories and also summer gear like boardshorts and rashguards. Recently I checked one of these sites, they had a great deal on a 4/4mm hooded wetsuit, down from $425 to $180, then they had a site wide coupon for members at an extra 30%. I got that suit for around $120!!! I also got my oldest grom an XS 3/2mm, ended up costing me $63 for a brand new suit, delivered, and manufactured by a reputable brand. Not always will they have your size. These companies are somewhat like a clearinghouse for named brands that can’t push out their last stock for that season. But sometimes you’ll find deals on new models that are just coming out. I called a couple of these sites and asked if they’re trying to flog B-stock to unsuspecting sellers. I talked with Richard Gardner, Customer Solutions Team Lead at BackCountry, which is the primary holding company that represents many of the deal sites. Richard said that they would never sell B-stock, as it
would only harm them with potentially faulty stock and many returns. Instead their buyers look for great deals from the premiere companies like Billabong, Quiksilver, Body Glove, West Wetsuits, O’Neill and Rip Curl amongst some others. Going to that site you will see oneoff items on sale till it runs out, then another item will pop-up for a set duration or till it runs out. But they have another flash site right behind that veil called “Private Stash”. Only members can see this and there is a plethora of deals you wouldn’t imagine. There were many over the water locales in and about Jamaica Bay in the days of yore. Houses, hotels, restaurants, fishing stations and privy’s were constructed over wooden pilings and connected to each other as well as the mainland by elevated wooden walkways. A few were only accessible by boat. Many of these tiny bay communities have been forgotten and can only be found as notations on an old atlas providing schematics with little or no detail set down. The maps are of old sites once found in the Queens part of Jamaica Bay. A few are still around to this day: a. Broad Channel (Shad Creek Flats), b. The Raunt, c. Goose Creek, d. Howard Beach, e. Hamilton Beach, f. Harbor Haven, g. Warnerville, h. Meadowmere, i. Annahurst, j. Ramblersville, k. Hawtree Creek, l. Shell Bank Basin, m. Nassau Beach, n. Hook Creek, o. Springfield Dock, p. Marcella Park, q. Idlewild, r. Stony Creek Marsh, s. Ruffle Bar, t. Brant Point, u. Jamaica Beach Gardens, v. Broad Creek Marsh, w. Auer’s Dock, x. Horse Island, y. Howard’s Esplanade, z.
Richmond Hill Circle, Bayview Landing, Bay Edge, Highview Park, Locust Lawn & Jamaica Seaport. Many of these old sites are located under the JFK Airport landfill. Images of these old bay settlements are RARE! There are times an unmarked photo turns up to drive me, as a historian, nuts! They are the ubiquitous type and/or look very much alike. Today’s view of a bay locale with nary-a-hint of a sign or business name, or a name on a boat for hire! The back of the sepia-tone photo states that it was printed at Rockaway’s Camp Chaffee Tent City Studio with no date. This old Tent City in Seaside closed in 1913 and the photo was most likely made from a glass plate negative. “Old Glory” flying in the bay breeze has 45 stars in the field of blue. In 1896 our flag sported 45 stars after Utah became a state. 46 stars came in 1907 and 48 stars in 1912. This helps date the moment the photo was taken. Sometime ago a Broad Channel resident told me it was a photo of the old Enterprise Hotel near the northeast end of Broad Channel Station. I was in agreement until I
closely scrutinized the picture with a powerful magnifying glass. There was no railroad trestle observed crossing right to the left and only elevated wooden walks between buildings. What resembles a train bay crossing can barely be seen in the background because of poor focus. My best educated guess would place this Hotel, Restaurant & Fishing Station on a point of marsh on the
north bank of the old Raunt Channel (east of the Raunt LIRR Station) and just south of what was once known as Sloop Creek. Uniformed hotel and restaurant employees can be seen on the left side of the back porch and water storage cisterns on the right side. Boat rentals were plentiful. In 1935 Paschke Pavilion was located on the same site.

YMCA Gets Nat Grid Grant National Grid awarded a $20,000 grant to the YMCA of Greater New York last month for the newly constructed Rockaway Y at Arverne by the Sea, which has quickly become an anchor of the community since the facility opened in February of this year. The location provides valuable services to local residents in an area still fighting to recover from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The grant helps support environmentally sustainable equipment and features in the building that allow the branch to save energy for years to come and is through National Grid’s Cinderella Grant program. The Cinderella Grant program is a key part of the company’s commitment to the environment and to improving the quality of life in the communities in which its employees live and work. The program has run for 40 years, providing grants to projects that encourage energy efficiency and conservation. “National Grid has a long history of working with many organizations to support the local com-

AHOY ROCKAWAY ! Once again anglers you were robbed of a two day weekend of sun and fun. Saturday’s blustery cold rainy weather made it impossible to fish, and Sunday was just too windy even to fly a kite never mind trying to fish. We had many reports of fish being caught this past week by local anglers as the bass moved in. A special thanks to my friend Pauly T. who was kind enough to invite me out on his boat to try and nail some of these striped bass but, even we got skunked. We hit the hot spots too (Paul knows all of them) but the elusive bass gave
us the slip. We heard from “Jimmy the fisherman” on Tuesday. Jim called to let us know about the bass that were all over the inside and outside near B-85th Street. Jim said that the bass had the bunker up against the shore and were coming closer each day, Jim nailed a few bass and called to share the news. Thanks Jim ! Once again the weather did NOT cooperate. The season is coming to an end as it gets colder but we may have a few weekends still left. Tom’s Wave service station in
Rockaway Park reports that we still have black fish in the area. Tom also mentioned the bass blitz on both the inside and outside. The problem was the weather, nobody could get out. Big Ron’s fishing station on Cross Bay Blvd. had similar reports of not many angler going out this weekend because, of the weather. You couldn’t even fish under a bridge it was so windy all weekend. We did have some bass action earlier in the week. Leron over at Big Ron’s nailed a nice stripped bass weighing in at 34 Lbs. and 43” in length. And these really aren’t fish stories. Ihelp Program Offers Online Support A new program, iHelp: Sandy Stress Relief will provide an online mental health program for free for New York City Sandy survivors. The innovative, new service is available anywhere there is internet access and is designed to help users cope with mental health challenges related to the after-effects of a natural disaster like Superstorm Sandy. While most people are coping well two years after the land-fall of Hurricane Sandy, between 20 to 40 percent of individuals directly exposed to a disaster will continue to experience psychological distress more than a year after the event. iHelp: Sandy Stress Relief, an online program, will deliver free, interactive internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy in both English and Spanish. Available programs include: Fear Fighter for anxiety, phobias and panic; RESTORE for insomnia; SHADE for alcohol, substance abuse and depression; OCFighter for obsessive compulsive disorder; and Moodcalmer for depression. The programs can be accessed anytime 24/7. The program is being supported by Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder.

Family Risks Losing Home For a Second Time By Bianca Fortis
A Rockaway couple is at risk of losing their home – after it had already been fixed from the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. When the storm struck, it washed away a wall in the home of Patricia Fernandez and Arthur Farley, causing them to lose all of their possessions. They also lost three cars and their business, Grand Slam Pizzeria, which was located at 43-15 Beach Channel Dr. in Far Rockaway. Fernandez and Farley were forced to choose between saving their home or replacing the equipment
at the pizzeria. They chose their home. “We thought, ‘we have to save where we live – otherwise we’re going to be homeless,’” Fernandez explained. Their first step was to hire a contractor to do the work. Upon examining the house, it was determined that the beams of the roof were faulty. They replaced and the roof was raised to be a little bit higher. Fernandez and Farley were told they did not need to secure a permit. But later, a city investigator slapped the couple with fines for having done the work without the permit. After several months, they’ve now
received nearly $50,000 in fines from the city. Fernandez said the paperwork she has received from the city state that she and Farley risk losing their home or even going to jail if they do not pay the fines. The couple was told that the fines will be dismissed if they can hire an architect to draw up an adjusted blueprint. That, however, will cost $5,000. However, their resources have all but been depleted. Farley is unable to work now because of health issues and Fernandez said she’s had difficulty finding a job since the storm. “I’m just trying to find a way to fix my house,” Fernandez said. So their niece, Melis-
sa Colon, started an online fundraising campaign to help them raise the necessary funds. Colon, who lived in Rockaway until she was a young teenager, said she started the fundraiser because she is so close to her family. “We would always go to their pizzeria, they babysat me, we’d go to their house for barbecues, holidays and birthdays,” she said. “It was the place to be for the family, that house. Project Aims to Link Sandy Victims to Services A group of North Shore-LIJ researchers are studying the impact Hurricane Sandy had on the mental health of Rockaway residents. The first goal of Project Restoration is to collect data regarding mental health issues in Rockaway related to Hurricane Sandy and to connect survey participants with mental health care providers. The project can also provide reim-
bursement for out-of-pocket costs which might prevent individuals from seeking care, including copays, transportation and child care, according to Study Coordinator Patricia Rothenberg. Lastly, the project is funding a parttime social worker at the Far Rockaway Treatment Center. The principal investigators are Dr. Rebecca Schwartz and Dr. Emanuela Taioli. Researchers are focusing entirely on the Rockaway peninsula because it

was so badly impacted by the storm. “We have a lot of connections who expect that there is a real mental health burden that was unmet even before Hurricane Sandy,” Schwartz said. Another study, funded by the Centers for Disease Control, will examine other areas, including other parts of Queens and Staten Island. That data can later be compared to the Rockaway study. Researchers have made the survey available at various recruitment sites and events in Rockaway during the last couple of months. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and includes questions that address anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder associated with Hurricane Sandy. Participants are reimbursed $15 for their time. So far about 300 people have taken the survey. Researchers are especially interested in collecting more data from the west end of the peninsula,
they said. Of those, about 42 percent – 127 – screened for elevated risk for mental health issues. “There’s a stigma around receiving mental health care,” Schwartz said. “People don’t necessarily want to receive treatment, they usually prioritize other areas of health.” Ultimately the data will be used to assess whether individuals are benefiting from the mental health care services, Schwartz said. And should there be future natural disasters, the data can help guide future response. Current funding will provide health care for study participants for two years. The next recruitment site will be Monday, Nov. 17 at the Seaside Queens Library from 5 to 8 p.m. Researchers will be there along with the Visiting Nurse Service for a workshop for their Disaster Distress Response Program.

Michael Sciaraffo, a Brooklyn resident, wasn’t an active rider of the Rockaway ferry – but his friends were. Members of the community have sought his help in restoring service. Sciaraffo is well known in the Rockaway community as the founder of the Secret Sandy Claus project, which helps deliver toys to Sandy-affected families each holiday season. He has a background in government and public service and was asked by Sandy residents to see what he could do to help restore ferry service, he said. His first step was to create a ferry usage survey to determine how and when riders actually used the ferry. “I wanted to help try to find a way to be part of a team to restore service, given that I possess a nice skill set and have some talents with collecting information, analyzing it and publicly giving that information to the general public,” he said. Rockaway residents have come to rely on the ferry after it was implemented two years ago when Hurri-
cane Sandy knocked out train service. Despite much campaigning and rallying, government officials chose to cancel the service, citing a lack of funds to keep it going. The ferry’s last ride was Friday evening. Sciaraffo has already submitted a Freedom of Information Law request to the New York City Economic Development Corporation for data regarding ferry usage. He will compare the numbers with the data he receives from riders filling out his survey. “We’re collecting all the information to make comparisons and to understand why, from a government perspective, the ferry was not a viable option given the current funding stream,” he said. “We’re looking forward to the future to find ways to restore the service as well as increase ridership.” Sciaraffo envisions a future coalition of would-be ferry riders who can work together and work with the city government to restore the service. The fight to maintain the ferry service was a noble one that ultimately could not overcome the obstacle of a subsidy that was viewed by City Hall as too substantial on an overall and per rider basis, regardless of the source of subsidy funding. Part of the reason for this defeat was that it only considered maintaining the service as presently constituted. With the service now discontinued, a different framework must be set to try and reinstate service again in the future. It will require a change both in fee pricing structure and service schedule. A detailed account of daily ridership figures for each run for the past 12 months must be provided now to allow analysis that can guide a new proposal. In the absence of these figures, I would speculate that: Morning ridership is significantly concentrated on two runs, with lowest ridership on the first and last runs. Evening ridership is significant-

ly concentrated on two runs, with lowest ridership on the first and last runs. The exception to this would be the last run on Friday evenings, which has proven to be very popular. Correspondingly, the ridership on the first Manhattan bound afternoon run is well patronized on Fridays but not so well Monday through Thursday. Ridership figures are highest May through October and drop off November through April. There is a fixed cost to each run a boat makes, largely a function of fuel cost. Reducing the number of runs reduces the overall subsidy required, and if doing so results in a proportionally greater reduction in cost than reduction in fare revenue from lost ridership, the subsidy on a per rider basis is reduced. I would propose a schedule that consists of a morning run from Rockaway to Manhattan, a return to Rockaway, and a second run to Manhattan in the morning. The afternoon/ evening would begin with a run from Manhattan to Rock-

away, a return to Manhattan, and a second evening run to Rockaway. This could be augmented with a third additional morning run on Wednesdays to tie in with Broadway matinee schedule and a third evening run on Fridays, preferably later than currently, for the large number of riders who have demonstrated their usage of the service for pleasure purposes. I also would propose that the service runs from April 1 or April 15 through October 31 or November 15 with limited special service added for Thanksgiving weekend, the 10 days leading up to Christmas and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. I also believe that commuters would support a reasonable increase in fare that would require a monthly ticket purchase like with LIRR and Metro North, and as Seastreak does with its Atlantic Highlands service. A monthly ticket for $225-250 would probably not have a sharp effect on com-
muter ridership. I also think that occasional users would support a significant increase to one-way and round-trip fares to maintain this convenient and pleasurable service. A $10 one way, $18 round trip fare still easily beats gas, tolls, and parking for a car ride to Manhattan that also limits the opportunity to “fully enjoy yourself.” Publication of the detailed ridership figures would allow a more accurate analysis to see if these assumptions are supported by data, but I believe the combination of these measures would be able to drastically reduce the required subsidy to a point that is feasible for the budget. Once it is reestablished and demonstrates that it can meet the necessary revenue targets associated with a reduced subsidy, we can then test the feasibility of weekend and other additional service, but we have to begin by taking steps that will allow the return of core service. We already know the answer if we don’t.

Local looks to save a different ferry As one ferry was yanked from service by the City, another is trying to stay alive. Marilyn Harvey of Breezy Tour and Travel tells us the Commander Ferry which has sailed on Jamaica Bay and the Hudson for decades might be headed for the salvage yard. Just send to editor@rockawaytimes.com Pork Tenderloin with Peach and Pecan Sauce 1 tablespoon EVOO 1 pork tenderloin (about 1 pound), cut into ¾ inch-thick slices 2 cloves of garlic
2 green onions, sliced (about ¼ cup) 1 can (10 ¾ ounces) Campbell’s Condensed Golden Mushroom Soup 1 can (about 15 ounces) sliced peaches in juice, drained, reserving juice 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons honey ¼ cup pecan halves, toasted and broken into large pieces Hot cooked rice (I used whole wheat
pearl couscous) Heat the oil in a 10-inch skillet over medium high heat. Add the pork and cook Until well browned on both sides. Remove the pork from the skillet. Add the garlic and onions to the skillet and cook and stir for 1 minute. Stir the soup, Peach juice, soy sauce
and honey in the skillet and heat to a boil. Cook for 5 minutes Or until the soup mixture is slightly reduced. Return the pork to the skillet. Stir in the peaches. Reduce the heat to low. Cook until Pork is cooked through. Stir in the pecans. Serve the pork and sauce with the rice (or Couscous). Sprinkle with additional green onions, if desired.
Habitat For Humanity Exec Remembers Rockaway By Jim Killoran Two years later reflections run deep: the Rockaways were like another country to me, in some ways still are. I would visit my friend Kev, to play hoops, six weeks before Sandy to be there for his daughter’s wedding. I remember getting lost and exploring, seeing the new Stop and Shop, new homes being made, the tall high rises by the water, the boardwalk. The next time we spoke after the wedding, was when Sandy hit. What do you need…generators and pumps he says. He and his family like so many, love the Rockaways. Since then, my life has never been the same, nor those who were
affected by Sandy. Let this two year anniversary be the beginning of the slogan “It’s Rockaways time!” Let’s make Rockaway the best! That’s why we are still here, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, it’s one Rockaway; it’s one New York! I remember army tents, emergency workers, Americorp workers, police and firefighters. I remember getting pneumonia. I remember having Thanksgiving with thirty Americorp workers, our Staff, and Christ Community Church members outside… that first Thanksgiving. I remember meeting Steve Buscemi, working all day with the Fallout Boy, meeting Marky Ramone, NY Mets, the NY
city food truck vendors, Phil Goldfeder, seeing the President fly over, the Prime Minister of Ireland, and talking to Senator Schumer the first Sunday. I remember crying with seniors over their homes, families, mothers with kids, hugging and helping and hoping. Pledging that we would continue to be of help! Be Well Be Happy November thoughts By Sarah Arikian
November as a funny way of sneaking up on us – and this year has certainly been no exception. Here on the beach we have been enjoying some really lovely Indian summer weather, bright sunny days and world-class sunrises and sunsets, interspersed this last weekend with cool mornings, breezy afternoons, rain, and crisp evenings. I like it this way! I have finally realized, after twentyeight years of living here in Rockaway that I really relish this slow transition more than any other season. Maybe it is because I have an autumn birthday, or because I have always really liked picking apples, or that I prefer autumn layers to summer clothes, or that I have grown to love the Thanksgiving holiday more than any other, for whatever reason, November is my favorite month. It’s the month I like to linger in. I find myself walking longer with the dogs, enjoying the flurry of leaves on the street, strolling on the beach and enjoying the reflection of the wintery sun on the waves, and sometimes it is nice just to sit and watch the birds swooping in the breeze.
This doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy the other seasons, indeed I wouldn’t want to live in a part of the world that didn’t mark the changes of the months in a very real way, but there is just something so pleasing, and gorgeous about this time of year. It is easy to see why the poet John Keats called this “ the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,” and it does seem to lend itself to a romantic appreciation of natural beauty. November offers us a chance to reflect and appreciate what is around and inside us. And I find that this opportunity finds a parallel in the practice of yoga. Every time that we come to the mat we are slowly cultivating our bodies, our breath and our minds to help us work things out, moment by moment.
