Kendra Lane ‘Drops for Dough’ in Gliders Fitness Challenge By Katie McFadden

Rockaway resident Kendra Lane is “the biggest loser,” or rather the biggest winner, depending on how you look at it. Over the course of six weeks, Lane was able to drop 15 pounds and decrease her body fat by 8.8 percent as part of Rockaway Gliders’ “Drop for Dough” contest. While she may have lost unwanted pounds, Lane gained $1,000 for coming in first. Those who participated in the “Drop for Dough” contest could register for six weeks of unlimited classes. Lane, like many other participants, committed herself and took full advantage of the opportunity, by attending classes at least six days a week, for a total of 39 classes during the six-week contest period. Lane attended every class that Gliders has to offer. The second place winner, Suzie Urcelay, decreased her body fat by 8.3 percent. She received a gift certificate to Peter Luger’s steak house. Maggie Allen dropped 7.5 percent body fat, putting her in third. She won a butterball turkey, just in time for Thanksgiving. Rounding out the top 10 were Nikki Hendricks, who dropped 6.3 percent body fat, Bernadette Heeran and Joe McManus, who both lost 6 percent, Alice McElroy who dropped 5.6 percent, Madelyn Allen who dropped 5.5 percent and Scott Hendricks and Anne Schreiner, who both lost 5 percent body fat. Starting Monday, October 6, 64 participants weighed in and took measurements as they began a journey to get in tip-top shape in the course of six weeks, with the

extra motivation of a cash prize for losing the highest percentage of body fat. Participants attended classes that Gliders offers like spin, kettlebells, TRX, Hurricanes, pilates, burn and sculpt, bootcamp, kickboxing and more. Some also participated in Gliders’ meal program called “Mary’s Meals to Go,” which includes nutritious, premade dinner meals, four days of the week. The final weigh-in was on Monday, November 17. Some participants were able to lose 20 pounds during the contest, but the rankings were based on the loss of body-fat percentage, as it is a fairer way of measuring how much of a change there was in each participant. Gliders owner, Mary Edwards, says the competitive aspect and cash incentive was a good way to motivate participants. “Sometimes just saying you want to get healthy and you want to do this for you is not enough. There needed to be an added incentive, a cash prize,” Edwards said, adding that it also brought participants closer together. “Part of my goals with the studio is to build a good sense of community, which I definitely saw here. There has been camaraderie among the people in the competition. People got very serious about it and became a working crew, working together and pushing each other. That’s what I want with the studio.” Edwards opened Gliders at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive in May 2013. “The contest has been awesome. I’ve found the members’ participation to be very inspiring. BRIEFS St. John’s Gets Grant Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder announced that he has secured a $500,000 state grant for St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway to help assist in renovations and upgrades as well as expand their surgical unit. “St. Johns Hospital is currently the only healthcare facility open to serve the entire Rockaway Peninsula and it is still struggling financially to cover the costs of expenses incurred two years ago during Sandy,” Goldfeder said. “This new funding will go a long way to ensure that St. Johns can modernize, grow and continue to provide quality and accessible healthcare on the Rockaway Peninsula.” St. John’s — the only hospital left on the peninsula—currently services over 130,000 full time residents across the Rockaway Peninsula in addition to neighboring Nassau County. Last January, Goldfeder introduced legislation in the Assembly to reimburse St. John’s Episcopal Hospital $4.3 million in expenses spent during and after Sandy.

RYTF Youthmarket a Success The Rockaway Youth Task Force’s Youthmarket has proven to be a big success. The RYTF collaborated with GrowNYC for its second year of the market, which operates out of the RYTF Community Garden at 310 Beach 58th Street. The market is operated by local youth, supplied by local farmers, and designed to bring fresh fruits and

vegetables to the Rockaways. This year, the group sold more than 20,000 pounds of 50 varieties of fresh produce, serviced more than 2,000 customers and conducted more than 15 healthy food demonstrations. The RYTF will hold their last Youthmarket of the year from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 22.

New York Cares Hosts Coat Drive New York Cares began a citywide coat drive this week. Coat collection ends on December 31. Cartoon In Chief Damn. I was wishing I could be a cartoonist before a NY Post columnist reported that NY State GOP Chair Edward Cox predicted that Bill de Blasio will be the Democratic nominee for the Presidency in 2016. Cartoonists often have favorites. Longtime cartoonist for the Daily News, Bill Gallo, used to love to draw Yankees manager Casey Stengel. Stengel had an expressive face, full of lines. He had a quirky personality that endeared him to millions of New Yorkers. Because he managed the Yankees and the Mets in his career, fans from both sides of the root-

ing aisle loved Stengel. If I were a cartoonist, Bill de Blasio would be my favorite character. He’s listed at 6’5” but I’d bet rent money he’s taller. He’s certainly seems taller when surrounded by the munchkins on his team. I’d draw pictures of him in bed, feet hanging over the side, with Kyle Kimball of the EDC and DOT commissioner Polly Trottenberg, licking his feet trying to wake him. I’d draw him in the Excuse Room which used to be called the Blue Room. I’d surround him with people brainstorming BS ideas. Let’s not go

the Rockaway Parade and we’ll say because “it’s not inclusive.” And if somebody might warn him and say, but, it is inclusive. He’d shrug and reply, so what, there’s a parade the next day, people will forget about Rockaway. Seventy percent of the people will still like me. I’d have cartoon Bill promising Breezy Pointers he’d be back before the two year Sandy anniversary. And the next cartoon would show him laughing, they’d didn’t think I was serious, did they? I was trying to beat Joe Lhota by big numbers. Now that I don’t have to worry about Lhota, I don’t have to worry about Breezy Point. I’d draw Big Bill getting taller. His head further and further up in the clouds. So far up he’d have no idea that middle fingers from across the city were springing up everywhere. I’d have a cartoon about his mastery with numbers. The cartoon would have him patting himself on the back as he awaits to be given a gold star. He says we’ll issue 500 Build It Back reimbursement checks by Labor Day. And sure enough, the City reaches that goal. But no one bothers to say: Big deal. That was an average of 30 checks a week. Thirty checks while thousands and thousands waited? His reimbursement check numbers are as shaky as his so-called election landslide numbers, which occurred in a year with the lowest voter turn-

out EVER. So another cartoon would have de Blasio on a Lucky Charms box; he’d be shown writing a Thank You note every day to Anthony Weiner. My favorite cartoon would be drawn about a year from now. Chuck Schumer, Melinda Katz, Scott Stringer, and others start planning to primary this guy’s ass. They know voters were tired of Bloomberg. A democrat, any democrat, was going to get elected. But a lot of Dems are saying to themselves, this friggin’ guy… A couple of Facebook trolls – people who sit at their computers in the underwear (ewww) and are rarely are seen in public (who might that be?!) came to the mayor’s defense last week. One troll said de Blasio has always been late. Even when he was a City Councilman. People knew that about him and they still voted for him. He didn’t mean any disrespect showing up late to the Memorial and 70 percent of the people who voted for him are ok with de Blasio time. So the rest of you, shut up. Yeah, ok. Imagine if de Blasio runs for President? Hillary Clinton famously asked candidate Barack Obama if he would be ready for an international crisis, an emergency phone call that comes at 3 a.m. Imagine if Bill de Blasio gets asked that? Would you know what to do at 3 a.m.? Hell yes, he’d say. I know what I’d do. Roll over and go back to sleep.

By now almost everyone is aware that our Mayor was late in arriving at the Flight 587 Memorial Service on Beach 116th Street in Rockaway. Just before 9:16 am when a bell was to be tolled to commemorate the exact time of Flight 587’s demise, the Mayor still hadn’t arrived. When asked where the Mayor was, the stock reply was “He’ll be here in a few minutes.” As 9:16 am rapidly approached all of the Mayor’s minions simply stood around looking clueless with their hands in their pockets. Suddenly, Miriam Estrella, who lost family on Flight 587 back in 2001, rose from her seat and took charge of the situation. Ascending to the podium Ms. Estrella announced to the crowd “Sorry, our Mayor’s not here but it is time that exactly 13 years ago our family members passed away and we will now toll the bell.” Thankfully, the bell was tolled on time and the assembled mourners shared a moment of silence to reflect on the 265 lives lost when Flight 587 fell from the sky and exploded in Belle Harbor. Shortly thereafter Mayor de Blasio arrived embarrassingly late at the ceremony on Beach 116th Street and at the conclusion of the memorial service, with no apology for his lateness, damage control on the part of Mayor’s staff went into high gear. The Mayor’s spokesman, Marti Adams, explained that the Mayor decided to travel to Rockaway by police boat because that was the quickest means of transport but was delayed because of unexpected heavy fog. Really? Are you kidding me? Considering this is the same Mayor who killed our Rockaway Ferry service only two weeks ago, you really have to assume that he thinks little of rubbing salt in that wound! The Mayor’s spokesman also conveniently forgot to mention that de Blasio was scheduled to leave Gracie Mansion via NYPD boat at 8 am for the ceremony but instead left 35 minutes late. Realizing that the boat and heavy fog excuse wasn’t gaining any traction, the Mayor then stated that he was late because he had a really

rough night, couldn’t sleep and was feeling off-kilter. What a bunch of malarkey! All that was missing from Bill’s “woe is me” statement was Linda Ronstadt standing beside him singing “Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me!” A few days after the Flight 587 memorial, when asked by the media about his continual lateness, rather than apologizing and attempting to place this embarrassing matter behind him, Mayor Bill took the course of a true politician - never retreat... never retract...never admit a mistake - and simply dismissed the issue of his constant tardiness as “inside baseball.” “Inside baseball” really? The Mayor would be well served to heed the sage advice of the editor of the Rockaway Times, Mr. Kevin Boyle, who cautioned in a recent Boyleing Points column that “You gotta be careful using inside baseball stuff because if you go too inside, you’ll be the only one there.” This entire fiasco could have been avoided if only he had the common sense to take a pittance of time at the conclusion of the memorial service to address those in attendance and offer a sincere apology for his inability to arrive at that solemn gathering on time, recognized and expressed his gratitude to Ms. Estrella for rising to the occasion and salvaging the timeliness of the event and expressed regret for his insensitivity in utilizing maritime transport to travel to the event after having terminated our Rockaway Ferry just two weeks earlier, this incident could have been a one day story. Bill de Blasio’s lack of common sense and ensuing insensitivity to those he serves can only lead us to believe that our career civil servant Mayor is quite comfortable believing that his time is more valuable than ours. This character flaw only serves to paint our Mayor as a very uncivil servant! Broad Channel - why would anyone want to live anywhere else! He was then driven to Beach 116th Street. Of course, he could have been dropped off closer if the ferry dock was still in place at Beach 108th Street. Dear Editor: I note with interest that Mayor de Blasio arrived ‘by boat’ and some 20 minutes late for the November 12 ceremony, annually held on Beach 116th Street in Rockaway, to honor the lives of the 265 passengers and crew of Flight 587 who tragically lost their lives some 13 years ago as a result of their plane crashing into the Rockaway peninsula. Coincidentally, and just maybe, if he had not cancelled the Rockaway ferry, de Blasio and his staff could have taken the 7:05 a.m. Seastreak boat from Wall Street to Beach 108th street and arrived at 8:00 a.m. (even with the stop in Brooklyn) and been on time, or even early, to greet and console the survivors, family and friends who attended this heartfelt and emotional gathering. Just maybe!

Dear Editor: There is a court case worth following. A Long Island judge said there was the potentially widespread and highly improper practice of engineer reports being rewritten so that insurance claims wouldn’t have to be paid! A family stumbled upon this by accident while pursuing other claims. A warning should go out to all homeowners who received engineer reports that caused any sort of problem. There should be further investigations into this. And this really is just another example of how homeowners can get screwed. It’s difficult enough trying to get back on your feet but when you have to deal with incompetence and fraud it’s a whole other level. Last week your paper reported that someone got a bigger hike in flood insurance than they were supposed to. It was a few hundreds dollars. Maybe insurance companies are overbilling expecting some people to miss it. People heard a lot about insurance going up so maybe they think a few hundred dollars isn’t so bad. If it’s more than it should be though, it’s too much. Keep an eye on these scoundrels!

Group Growing In More Ways Than One

Can an idea truly unify diverse people to take action? I’ll define diversity in general terms of lifestyle, politics, age, neighborhood, religion, ethnicity, race, language, economics, etc. The Rockaway Backyard Collective includes members, which I say loosely, (there are no annual dues or monthly meetings), living in Rockaway. Indeed, we are a diverse group of residents, and also divided by zip codes, neighborhoods and personal responsibilities and circumstances, such as parenting, careers, disabilities, etc. Nonetheless, we are united by one passionate idea – growing what we eat! What began as an experiment inspired by Dennis Loncke, pastor at Arverne Pilgrim Church, and financially assisted by a Neighborhood Grant awarded by the Citizens Committee for New York City ($1,500) rapidly sprouted into a movement bringing residents together from different parts of Rockaway, such as Breezy Point and Arverne. The initial project was to select five willing families to use their yards to grow food in an effort to explore a sustainable practice increasing families’ resiliency to disaster. Pastor Loncke led the way, being the experienced farmer trained in his native country of Guyana. Jeanne Dupont, founder and executive director of the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, arranged a donation of 3,000 seedpods of various vegetables and herbs – my spinach is still coming up. Facebook did the rest of the work connecting Rockaway residents with the idea of collectively growing food. Arverne resident, Antoi-

nette DeMetropolis and I began making home visits dropping off seedpods, soil and plants. We were even able to help with some weeding and planting encouraging first-time planters to plunge into the dirt fearlessly, and guilt-free of failure – it happens. (Sorry if we never got to your home. Being fulltime moms and wives sometimes thwarted well-intended plans.) The idea of growing food collectively became a springboard for other food, health and community sustainability-related concerns, such as whether to invest in Rockaway CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture) - including a meat CSA, are all foods labeled “organic” good, what do supermarkets mean by “local” produce, what are the various forms of composting to meet individual lifestyles and, overall, how can we be more sustainable? As our group, the Rockaway Backyard Collective, continues to grow with one Facebook member request at least once a week, the dialogue deepens and widens, exploring the above questions, sharing articles, and hosting demonstrations on topics such as canning tomatoes, home composting and, to-be-scheduled bread making. The Bible uses the mustard seed as an example of how something so tiny grows into something so stunningly large, vital and purposeful that birds can build nests in it. Funny what a small seed can do. Prior to 1877 all Steamboat Captains dreaded traversing their vessels through Rockaway Inlet to the many docks on the bay shore of the Rockaway Peninsula. There was an ingrained fear of running their steamers aground on the constantly shifting shoals and sand bars. Most of which were under water. Their prime concern was the safety of passengers, crew and the loss of their boats by the actions of wind and water!! The great majority of the steam-

a way to greatly increase boat traffic to the Jamaica Bay Rockaway docks & Seaside attractions!!! The secret was to conquer the “treacherous” Rockaway inlet for reasons previously stated. Wainwright held meetings with federal, state & local authorities that included local ship Captains familiar with the Rockaway Inlet. The end result was to have RED BUOYS placed as channel markers in the Rockaway inlet AND local Captains would act as “Pilots” aboard incoming/exiting vessels to and from Jamaica Bay. In 1878 nautical charts were published for Mariners covering Rockaway inlet and Jamaica Bay. With much needed accomplish-

ment, excursion boat traffic to Rockaway Beach’s Seaside Resort – PLUS – increased a hundredfold, ensuring a capitalist dream! Bigger and better side-wheel steamers with walking beam steam engines were built. The Columbia, Grand Republic & General Slocum and just a few of the many excursion boats that would now come to the Rockaways from many points up and down the east coast! Today we’re publishing an advertisement card that was distributed by the R. Cornell White Steamer Line. This handout describes what was available at Seaside and names other boats in the fleet. It also lists schedules from Manhattan and Brooklyn wharfs. Steamers ran into the Rockaway’s until 1926 and the opening of Cross Bay Road/ Blvd which allowed automobile traffic over the bay to our peninsula. No Armed Bandit: Speed Camera Catches Thousands By Kevin Boyle

Rockaway has a new toll or at least it seems that way. Thanks to the speed camera installed on Beach Channel Drive just across from the sewer treatment plant at approximately 106th Street, more than three thousand violations were issued to drivers in July and August. The Rockaway Times first submitted a Freedom of Information request seeking the number of violations at Beach 106th street in August but was informed that no such records existed because there is no record of a speed camera at that location. We resubmitted the request this time with Beach 104th street as the intersection – a full two blocks away from the infamous camera. Bingo. The Department of Finance, provided the Rockaway Times with a brief printout detailing violations issued from the intersection that doesn’t have a speed camera. From July 1 through August 31 there were 3,031 violations for

speeding past the intersection of Beach 104th Street and Beach Channel Drive. The Department of Finance reports that 2,459 violations have been paid in full and 42 have been partially paid. The City raked in $134,151 with almost $40,000 still due from that period. The cover letter from the Finance Department states the printout is “the only information that could be located in response to your request.” The Rockaway Times has submitted another request asking for violations issued at Beach 108th Street which is at least as close to the camera as Beach 104th. (Quite frankly, we expect to find out that more than 3,031 violations have been generated by the camera). The camera, ostensibly, was set up to discourage drivers from speeding in the vicinity of the schools nearby. But this measure seemed less about safety than it was about revenue. No speed limit sign was ever erected. Soon after the camera was installed, Rick Horan, a community activist, made his own sign and stood

warning drivers about the camera. Someone taped a makeshift, unofficial sign to a street pole warning drivers as well. The sign lasted a day or two before city workers removed it. Many drivers received ticket notices in the mail not knowing a camera was even in place. Families with multiple cars reported multiple tickets. With the City’s new Vision Zero policy in which the speed limit for city streets is now 25 mph, it is expected the camera will snap license plates of cars exceeding 35 mph or any speed more than 10 above the new limit. Freedom of Information requests often result in narrow responses. The Department of Finance couldn’t say whether the violations included those that were triggered by the mobile speed camera that was first established at the site. Of the 3,031 violations issued, a grand total of five were dismissed (with no explanation as to why).

Getting “Surf Fit” with Jimmy Brady (This week we hand over the column to Jimmy Brady). We spend 95 percent of typical surf sessions just paddling. Paddling out into the lineup, paddling to get in position, paddling to stay in position, catching waves, always moving, always PADDLING. This week we are going to start with that, the meat and potatoes of surfing. Other than surfing everyday, swimming may be the only other exercise we can do to mimic the stress we put on our arms, shoulders, back and neck. Ideally we want to be able to swim as long as

we surf measured in time. It would be hard to put a number on the amount of yards/meters we cover during a surf session. We do know typically how long in minutes or hours we spend in the water. I’m not saying to swim for 2-3 hours but with consistent short efforts, your total volume will by far exceed your typical surf session. About the workouts It is important to always set a goal and have a plan. It keeps you focused and motivated. The workouts that are included are by no means my own – I found these workouts online when I decided to

get back in the pool. I would print out a copy of the workout or write it down on paper, slip it into plastic sheet protector, and have it on the pool deck. These workouts are all designed for beginners and range in length from 400m to 1200m around 30-45mins. When to do endurance, form and speed workouts? For a beginning swimmer who is working on mechanics and endurance, I would recommend that, if you are swimming three times a week, you do not do the speed workouts on a regular basis. I would instead do two form and one endurance workout with an occasional speed workout used for variety every two or three weeks. If you have the chance to swim four times a week then I would add in the speed session if you feel up to it - if not, another endurance session will not be wasted. How often should I swim? If you’re just a beginner, you’re likely to get the best results from swimming three or four times per week for shorter periods of times rather than trying to do too much too soon. Shorter swims will allow you to maintain your form throughout the workout. When you become tired, your technique suffers. I found swimming more frequently allowed me to keep that feel for the water. These workouts should get you

through a month of swimming. I will post a new tougher workout in four weeks that you can add to this. Now get going and get ready to surf better! -Jimmy Brady Terms: Right Arm - right arm only - use a pull buoy keep your left arm extended and stroke only with your right arm. Pull - using the pull buoy, concentrate on stroke mechanics and body position (i.e. maintain horizontal position in the water). Left Arm - left arm only – use a pull buoy keep your right arm extended and stroke only with your left arm. Kick - kicking only - can be completed on front or back with or without fins. Catch up - using the pull buoy, complete the stroke with one arm before starting the catch with the other arm.

Goldfeder Seeks Rail Line $$ from Cuomo Following the conclusion of the Queens College Department of Urban Studies comprehensive study for the reactivation of the Rockaway Beach Rail Line last week, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder has stepped up his efforts, asking Governor Andrew Cuomo direct a portion of the $5 Billion in state dollars from the budget surplus, created by settlements and fines from major financial firms, to restore the abandoned rail line. “This is a one-shot infusion of money that should be used for infrastructure that could provide Queens and the entire city with the transit options it so desperately needs,” Goldfeder said. “What better use of state dollars than for the restoration of an abandoned rail line that could create jobs, remove congestion from our roadways and improve transit options for up to 500 thousand riders per day.” In his letter to Governor Cuomo, Goldfeder detailed the student-led survey which concluded that reactivating the Rockaway Beach Rail Line could generate a half a million subway rides a day and that a majority of survey respondents favored reactivation. Addition-

ally, among surveyed middle class residents with annual household incomes of $50,000 to $100,000, roughly 40 percent favored reactivating the rail line, compared to only 25 percent requesting it be converted into parkland. Directing state funding to restore the right of way for the Rockaway Beach Rail Line is the best use of our taxpayer dollars since it will not only increase public transportation options for southern Queens and Rockaway, but it will also prepare our neighborhoods for future growth, noted Goldfeder. Additionally, the Queens College study indicated based on recent studies and information from the MTA and NYU that complete restoration of the abandoned Rockaway Beach rail line would cost between $600 and $900 million. Built at the turn of the century, the Rockaway Beach Rail Line, also known as White Pot Junction, was owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road. Servings as the only intra-borough connection between southern Queens and trains throughout the rest of New York City, the rail line provided residents with safe, affordable and

expedient access to other parts of Queens and the rest of the city. Goldfeder is supported by a large coalition of elected officials and union leaders to restore the line, including Congress Members Gregory Meeks, Hakeem Jeffries, Jerrold Nadler, member of the influential Congressional Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, Chairman of the Council Committee on Transportation, the Iron Workers Union and TWU Local 100 representing almost 70,000 active and retired transit workers. Additionally, both the MTA and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli have expressed support for the rail line as a cost-efficient way to improve transit options for city residents. Goldfeder has also collected more than 7,000 signatures in a petition to fully restore the Rockaway Beach Rail Line. In the best interest of our Queens families and to the benefit of every resident across New York City, I strongly urge Governor Cuomo to use our state’s surplus dollars to fund the restoration of the Rockaway Beach Rail Line.”

However, the group is badly in need of donations. “We’re not going to cancel,” she said. “I’ll just pray something falls out of the sky. If I have to cook myself the night before, I’ll find a way to do it.” They are seeking in-kind donations of stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, vegetables and pie. Be Well, Be Happy The holidays are coming and for many people there will be so many parties to attend. While this is a wonderful time of the year, celebrating and seeing all our family and friends, it can also be a challenging one on our bodies. For one thing, as the cold weather comes upon us, we tend to stay inside cooking and eating comfort foods. We choose to snuggle under our blankets, read a good book, watch a movie or simply listen to our favorite music during the cold winter months. While these are all good things to do to entertain yourself, it can be uplifting and energizing to bundle up and head out for a walk or run. The fresh air is great therapy for the winter blues. As long as you are dressed warm it’s a great way to exercise and rejuvenate. As far as holiday parties you may attend with delicious looking food you can’t resist eating, you may want to limit your intake. I think it’s really necessary to set goals at this time of the year. Be aware of what you are putting into your body and make the commitment to eat healthy. It’s ok to sample the different appetizers but try to choose healthy ones. If one evening you are overfed or overserved, start fresh the next day. Every day we wake up to a fresh new 24 hours; it’s up to you on how you want to spend it. This is a precious gift that somehow goes un-

noticed until something happens that makes you appreciate waking up to the present day. Alcohol consumption is usually high during the holidays toasting to the great life we share with one another. Celebrations are wonderful and I for one love having a good time but I am learning to slow down. Water or seltzer is a nice choice in between cocktails if you are having more than one. Perhaps you could decide before you go to the party exactly how much you want to drink and stick to that plan. Your morning the next day will be so much more pleasant and you will also be able to go to your favorite workout or yoga class! If you are hung over you tend to eat foods to make you feel better and not exercise. Make the decision to stay healthy this winter while still celebrating all the wonderful holidays with family and friends. Don’t wait until January 1st to start a new exercise or food plan. Begin on any given day. Your body is your temple. Treat it with respect and honor what goes into it. You will not only feel better physically but mentally you will become stronger and balanced. So cheers to all for the next few months to be healthy, strong and balanced. Never judge yourself or anyone else if there is overindulgence. Just start over, it’s never too late. Have a great holiday season. Be Healthy, Be Happy.

100th Precinct Sees Rise in Shootings By Bianca Fortis

Eleven out of 12 shootings that occurred within the confines of the 100th Police Precinct in the last year were gang-related. According to precinct Capt. Craig Adelman. The 101st Precinct is also grappling with gang violence, Adelman said Tuesday night at the 100th Precinct Council meeting. This year the 100th precinct is up four shootings from the previous year. Adelman emphasized that the police need the public’s help to identify and convict criminals. “People see stuff, but no one is telling us stuff,” Adelman said. “We need the public’s help.” He said historically victims do not cooperate to help make arrests. The

prosecution of a perpetrator is difficult without a complainant or witnesses, he said. That is why video surveillance as evidence becomes the key to securing a conviction. Ten of the shootings were in the vicinity of Beach Channel Drive. According to Capt. Carlos Fernandez, who oversees District 23 of the transit police, there were two crimes in the last 28-day period, compared to one at this time last year. He said thieves target individuals on trains who use electronics, especially riders who sit by the door. The Rockaway food scene has been growing for a number of years now. What started with pub and deep-freezer fare has evolved into a sizeable collection of quality chefs who take a deep and unwavering pride in their work. As the growing beach crowds evidence every summer, the Rock’s culture is nothing to be taken lightly! The developing scene has given way to a wonderful opportunity for all of Rockaway’s own chefs to grow in their craft. As a chef, you’re responsible for making a menu that appeals to your customer base, while articulating some form of inspiration for your dishes. Chef Ed Lee once called food a metaphor for the life that we live and whether it be one of health, vice, or some sort of balance between the two, it’s that meaning that we attempt to communicate with our fare. Sometimes people don’t love what you create, and we try to work around that. I’ll often step outside of my comfort zone and experiment with dishes that I would have never have dreamed of playing with because I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t. People come into my store and try new things every day that I’m here, and they love it!

What makes me above that? I guess that’s symbolic in itself of the life I live; I’m always trying new things. I might not like them all, but I’m much happier having found that out for myself, rather than trusting what I hear. Once in a while, you find something that blows your mind. That’s a story for my Turkey Burgers! The surprise is where all of the fun in this job comes from; the moments like those. I think the scene here has a lot of room for improvement. We need all of the residents here to realize what type of treasure they’re sitting on, and to capitalize on that! For years, my husband and I would travel into another borough to pick up specialty foods, groceries, and to eat well. We love eating quality food, and the only way to have that is to visit a chef who puts their life into their craft. For once, all of those things are HERE, in ROCKAWAY! I’ve been here over 20 years and this is the first time I’ve seen change so tangible in our neighborhood; we just need to come together as a community and take hold of it. The View From Belle Harbor

In last week’s edition of the Rockaway Times, John Cori wrote, “I believe it will be in the peninsula’s best interest to secede from the City of New York.” Like John, many Rockaway residents are not happy with the city’s response to our community after Hurricane Sandy. Many people in Rockaway are wondering just how big is too big for a city to effectively provide services to all its citizens. I agree, seceding from the city is an interesting thought. However, I do think the mechanics of doing so is highly improbable at this time. If attempted, it would distract us from our main mission of rebuilding our community after Hurricane Sandy. Hurricane Sandy has certainly caused residents on the peninsula to question how our past and current city administration has responded to the needs of the Rocka-

way peninsula. Early on, there were many promises made related to rebuilding and protecting our peninsula from future storms. The billions of dollars given to the city to achieve this goal was encouraging. We have had an army of consultants marching through the Rockaways. Many very bright and capable individuals came to discuss our issues but always had to go back to “the city” to get approvals. Many of us remember the first meeting the Department of Parks and Recreation had with the community. They started out by saying they had some suggestions how to proceed but would want community input before moving forward. They wanted to get the beaches up for the coming summer by creating islands where the boardwalk once was. The community had many questions but in the end agreed

with the idea. They then told us they wanted to construct bathrooms and lifeguard stations on the beach, and showed some designs. The community said emphatically no to this idea only to be told it was non negotiable and ready to go. Well so much for collaboration – This turned out to be a very costly and bad decision that we will have to live with for a long time. The Rockaway peninsula population is now 135,000+. According to a 2014 estimate, our neighbors, the City of Long Beach has a total population is just 33,554. Now what if Rockaway was a city like Long Beach when Hurricane Sandy arrived? Federal dollars would have come directly to our community. Decisions on how to restore the boardwalk, homes, and commercial areas would have been made by our local government.

Look at Long Beach and the speed in which they built their boardwalk and are now repairing homes. The knowledge of their own community has been crucial to the community’s restoration efforts. Eliminating seceding as a realistic option, what is needed is for NYC to provide greater fiscal accountability coupled with a stronger collaboration with the Rockaway community. Collaboration is just a word with no meaning unless it is accompanied by timely action based on sincere, honest and open communications. In the past two years there are too few examples of genuine collaboration with the Rockaway community. It is hoped that in the future we will begin to see more tangible examples of the city genuinely collaborating with the Rockaway community.

Participatory Budgeting Process to Begin By Bianca Fortis

The participatory budgeting process for the 2015 City Council budget has began. Both Rockaway councilmembers, Eric Ulrich and Donovan Richards, will participate. Of the 51 members of the council, only 24 opted into participatory budgeting this year. Ulrich is one of only four councilmembers who has participated since the program began in 2011. Councilmembers who participate in the program allow community members to decide how to allocate $1 million of discretionary funding. The process takes several months and involves proposing and developing project proposals and ultimately voting on which projects to fund. The concept of participatory

budgeting began in Brazil in 1989. Some of the goals of this method of allocating discretionary funds are to empower communities, increase civic participation and increase transparency in government. In New York City, proposals must fit a number of guidelines; for example, a project must cost at lease $35,000 but no more than $1 million. The funds can’t be used for salaries or programs. Examples of items that have been funded in Rockaway include new computers for local public schools, upgrades to the Peninsula Branch of the New York Public Library, mobi mats for access for the beach and resurfacing playgrounds in Broad Channel. According to Robert Schwach, a representative for Ulrich, not all

projects that have been approved for funds have been completed yet; many of the projects take time to complete, he explained Tuesday night at the 100th Precinct Community Council meeting. Residents will vote on projects in March and April, and the implementation of the projects begins after April. Community residents have the opportunity to fill out forms with proposal ideas. Schwach brought an example of a “Peebie” box to the meeting, several of which will

be left throughout the community for residents to leave the forms in. Forms can also be delivered to the councilmembers’ offices or can be submitted through the New York City Participatory Budgeting website. “I hope you come up with a lot of suggestions because you’ve got $1 million to play with and I don’t think that happens very often,” Schwach said. 711 Seagirt Complex Sued for Policy Against Ex-Offenders By Bianca Fortis

A Long Island City-based nonprofit that offers services to formerly incarcerated individuals is suing the management of a Rockaway apartment complex for alleged discriminatory housing policies. The Fortune Society filed suit at the end of October against The Sand Castle apartment complex, its owner, Sarasota Gold, and its management company, the Weissman Realty Group, alleging that the complex has a policy of unlawful discrimination based on race and color. Fortune, which was founded in 1967, has a mission of helping formerly incarcerated individuals become contributing members of society, according to the organization. The Sand Castle apartment complex, located at 711 Seagirt Avenue in Far Rockaway, refuses to rent apartments to individuals who have a criminal conviction, according to court documents. “The policy excludes all such people regardless of the nature of the conviction, the amount of time that has lapsed since the conviction, evidence of rehabilitation or any other factor related to whether a specific person poses any threat to safety,” court documents state. In 2013 and 2014, Fortune attempted to rent apartments at The Sand Castle, which comprises 900 units, for its clients under a scattered-site program that required the apartments be located in Queens, but management refused. According to Fortune, this kind of “blanket ban” has become much easier because of increased accessibility to inexpensive background checks via the internet. “As a direct result of Defendants’ repeated ap-

plication of their blanket ban policy against Fortune, some of Fortune’s clients have been forced to remain homeless or in substandard or unsafe housing substantially longer than they otherwise would have while Fortune searched for alternative housing,” according to the documents. A lack of access to safe and affordable housing increases the risk of recidivism, according to the organization. Fortune alleges that such a ban is illegal under the Fair Housing Act and New York State and City law because it disproportionately affects black and Latino individuals. In the court documents, Fortune argues that the management company could evaluate each potential tenant individually – by taking into account the nature of the conviction, how long ago it occurred, post-conviction and post-release conduct, for example – rather than enacting a blanket ban. “This tailored approach would protect public safety equally well, yet it would be less discriminatory and exclusionary because it would reduce the number of African American and Latinos prevented from securing housing at The Sand Castle,” the documents state. The lawsuit also states that the management company already leases several apartments to Fortune clients; when Fortune staff members inquired about renting more apartments, they were declined and informed of the blanket ban when management realized that the clients had previously been incarcerated. Representatives of Sand Castle could not be reached for a comment.

It’s a nice atmosphere.” Due to the success of the contest, Edwards says she plans to hold it again around the beginning of the New Year, so people can kick-start their resolutions or get back in the game after taking a break over the holidays. However to make it fairer, she plans to split the money incentive so that a male and female winner can each win $500. “Men and women lose weight so differently. I

think it’s easier for men, so by splitting the prize, it will be more fair,” Edwards said. She’ll once again offer six weeks of unlimited classes for $200, while those who participated in the first round will get a 10 percent discount. After the New Year contest, Edwards says she’ll probably hold the contest once each season. “Even for the people who didn’t see that big of a transformation and didn’t win, so many people said the contest motivated them to work harder,” Edwards said, adding that she hopes participants keep that motivation. “Fitness is a lifestyle. I didn’t want this contest to just be six weeks and never see those who participated again. We want lifestyle changes.”

Hope Floats for Rockaway Cancer Survivors By Bianca Fortis

Hope floats, quite literally, for a group of Rockaway breast cancer survivors who have turned to an unusual sport to help them through recovery: dragon boat paddling. Canadian doctor Don McKenzie started a dragon boat team in the late 1990s, believing it would be beneficial for survivors to work on upper body strength in a supportive atmosphere. It was a successful project and dragon boating has become a popular sport for survivors around the world. Kelly Kelley said she learned about the sport through a Facebook post – “I’m always willing to try something new,” she said. “I thought, ‘That sounds like fun.’” She went to the World’s Fair Marina in Flushing where she met several other women, including a few from Rockaway, like Linda Murray, who also wanted to learn the sport. For Kelley, the sport wasn’t too difficult to pick-up. The most challenging aspect is actually getting all the participants to row in sync.“I do paddleboarding like 50 percent of the other people in Rockaway,” Kelley said. “It’s a similar motion.” Murray, who didn’t have experi-

ence in paddle sports, said it was a bit more challenging, especially after having a double mastectomy. But she was able to pick it up as well. Eventually, Kelley, Murray and a few other women decided to start their own team, called Hope Floats NYC. They’re currently recruiting for the 2015 season. They’ll begin training in April. Kelley hopes they’ll be able to participate in a competition hosted by the International Breast Cancer Paddler’s Commission.

Murray said some of the benefits include making good friends, getting exercise and learning how to work as part of a team. She said that women interested in the team shouldn’t be afraid to come out and try. “People get intimidated,” she said. “They think you have to be athletic – you don’t. I didn’t know anything about rowing a boat or paddling.” Kelley expressed a similar sentiment. “The worst than can happen is you spent the morning out on the water in the fresh air,” she

said. Kelley said her other team members became a support group of sorts, who can share advice related to breast cancer recovery. “Nobody’s going to complain,” she said. “We’ve all been to hell and back. It’s a nice little celebration to say look at what we can do. CROM Fighters Win Big By Bianca Fortis

It seems CROM travels well. Two fighters from CROM Martial Training on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 92nd Street traveled to Tuscany, Italy and earned silver medals in the World Kickboxing Association’s 2014 Unified World Champions Tournament. Mark Anthony Marrero, 27, of Brooklyn and Craig Young, 31, of Rockaway first went to the USA championships in Virginia. There they qualified to fight on behalf of Team USA in the world championship in Tuscany, Italy, according to Chris Romulo, the owner of CROM. The three-day tournament took place in late October and saw fighters from around the world. They fought in different kickboxing divisions. There were about 25 competitors from throughout the east-

ern seaboard including New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Romulo was one of a few coaches for the team. It was a first for CROM as no one from the gym had previously made it to a world championship. Romulo said Young is also raising a family, making his win even more of an accomplishment. And Marrero is a college student who has been pursuing his dream of fighting on the side. Both only began training a couple of years ago and had started from scratch, Romulo said. The fighters train six days a week and work on a number of areas, including skill training, strength and conditioning and running. Romulo said he’s hoping to have more fighters in next year’s championship. There are several young competitors, ranging in age from

New Uniforms, New Logo for Little League in 2015 Rockaway Little League is making plans for the 2015 season that include improvements to the facilities, playoff format, and –for the first time in five years– the uniforms worn by boys and girls of all ages. The new uniforms will feature higher-quality shirts, sturdier pants and stirrup socks. They will also sport a new Rockaway Little League (RLL) logo. The changes were the result of an analysis by Board member Tom Conaghan.

RLL had seen its uniform costs go up by almost 33% over the last few years. A big factor was the cost of using products licensed by Major League Baseball (MLB). The quality was good but by the use of MLB logos limited options and took a big bit out of the budget. In 2015, the League will purchase superior quality wick-type shirts for a lower cost. The uniform pants will be a heavier weight, which should mean less rips from sliding. Stirrup socks will give the uniforms a

12 to 18, with whom he’ll work to prepare them for the North American champion and hopefully get them qualified for Team USA as well. “I’m proud and happy about the performance and heart they showed to train and compete on a

world level,” Romulo said. “What we’re trying to do here in Rockaway is expose people to the sport of Muay Thai. It’s not just fighting – it’s about sport and progressing and hopefully bringing your sport to a world level.”

Lines Up- Til Next Season Ahoy, Rockaway ! Well anglers it looks like this is the last cast for the season. The small boats are almost all hauled in, washed up, and put away. It was an interesting fishing season for sure and a lot of it happened right off of Breezy Point this year. We had whales, sharks, big schools of bunker and BIG fish ! We had an unbelievable fluke season and Rockaway ate REALLY well on all the fresh tasty fillets of summer. Now it’s time to do maintenance on the fishing rods, reels, and boats. I’d like to THANK The Rockaway Times and itS Editor Kevin Boyle and his staff for putting up with me, publishing the photos of the “BIG ONES”, and letting me write this column to share the information with other anglers in the Rockaway area. Tom reports to us that a 30 pound striper was caught off of Breezy Point this weekend. The angler snagged a bunker from one of the large bunker schools that are just off the beach. The bunker was then fished “Live Lining” and produced the 30 pound striped bass. Well THAT’S REALLY IT Anglers. Have a great Thanksgiving and Holiday season.
