Who are the Knights of Columbus? By Katie McFadden

You go to their hall for Community Board, police community council and Parks Department meetings, radio bingo and country nights, and perhaps you’ve seen them at a member’s wake, but not everyone knows the Knights of Columbus really do. That’s because the Knights don’t do their charity work for recognition. When speaking with the Knights, it was almost impossible to get them to brag about the good work they do, but one thing is for certain; they’ve been doing it for a long time. The Knights of Columbus is a worldwide charitable organization comprised of Catholic men, which focuses on the principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. Starting in 1882 in Connecticut, the organization has grown to 1.8 million members spread throughout 14,000 councils in more than 14 countries, making it the largest Catholic Fraternal organization in the world. Rockaway’s council, Monsignor William F. Burke Rockaway Council #2672, began in 1928. Council #2672 has 750 members and has had three chaplains and 45 Grand Knights. Father James Devine, the former pas-

tor of St. Rose of Lima Church, is the current chaplain and Charles Shiel is the current Grand Knight. In 1955, the council opened its home at 333 Beach 90th Street. The building was built by council members for the council. Now, it serves as a central community hub where everything from civic meetings to classes and fundraisers take place. “Ever since the 90’s, we made a decision that we would welcome civic, non-profit groups that needed to conduct meetings for the betterment of the Rockaway community,” trustee and former Grand Knight, Andy McCracken said. “We’re a charitable organization and our members live in and care about this community, so letting people use this space is one of the ways we can give back to the community,” current deputy Grand Knight Glenn DiResto said. “If we didn’t provide the hall, where would these organizations meet?” Following Hurricane Sandy, the Knights of Columbus hall became even more essential. The members properly secured the building with duct tape and sand bags before Sandy and had six inches of water inside, even though the water line

outside marked four feet. Members worked as quickly as possible to get the building back up and functioning and it was reopened on November 28, 2012. “With Sandy, everyone was without power and was figuring out how to rebuild their homes, so we made it our mission to open our doors, not only to civic groups and nonprofits, but to the entire community, including senior groups and for-profit groups, so people had a place to go and share stories and support each other,” McCracken said. “We opened the doors to everyone after Sandy. Our primary goal was to be a home to these people in need,” past Grand Knight Richie Knott said. The Knights practice the virtue of

charity in many other ways by supporting members of the council and of the community, but they remain humble about their actions. “We do a lot of things that we don’t get credit for, but we’re not looking for credit,” McCracken said. “Anyone who needs something in the community can come to the Knights,” he added. “We’re a family oriented organization. Some members may not have a family, but we become like a family to them,” Knott said. The Knights also hold many fundraisers which have helped those in need, far and wide. “We try to help all of the churches, schools and basically anybody that Continued on page 27

Council Vets Committee Urges Legislature to Override Governor’s Veto of Military Buy-Back Reform

City Council Member Eric Ulrich, Chair of the Council Veterans Committee, and other Councilmembers penned a joint letter to New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver today urging the State Legislature to override Governor Cuomo’s veto of the New York State Military Buy-Back Reform Bill in the event of a special session. The bill would afford all honorably discharged veterans the opportunity to purchase and apply up to three years credit toward New York’s public retirement system for military service. Current law only permits those who served in designated conflicts this benefit and unfairly penalizes Cold War veterans and women veterans who

The Assembly and State Senate passed the bill last session by near unanimous consent and the City Council adopted a resolution in support of the legislation earlier this year. Governor Cuomo vetoed the item on November 7, 2014 at the urging of Mayor Bill de Blasio. “All military service is public service and it should be acknowledged as exactly that,” Ulrich said. “Those who have served our country honorably, regardless of time or era, should be entitled to the same benefits. The State Legislature has already voted to approve this bill by an overwhelming margin. They should affirm their support for our vets by overriding the Governor’s veto.”

This Turkey Sends His Thanks Happy Thanksgiving. If there ever were a year to say thanks, this would be the one. When I planned the launch of this paper in June I didn’t quite expect the 24/7 demands. And thankfully, I got the support I needed. They say you better be careful when you start thanking people because you’re sure to leave someone out. So thank YOU. (Now you can’t say I didn’t say thanks). My wife, Kathy, was encouraging, supportive and helped at every turn. She’s worked 24/7 for years

and showed me how to keep at it. The fam – from my brothers and sons to father-in-law and mother– in–law gave important help along the way. And thanks to my mother --- proofreader, tipster, and comic inspiration. Advertisers came through. Some generous people and groups advertised simply to give me a boost and help me find solid footing. Many have signed on for the long term, thereby showing confidence in The Rockaway Times. As you know, it’s a free paper and without advertisers, it’d be a dead paper.

The only thing I ask is, if you see an ad in the paper, mention to the people who advertise. So thanks in advance for that. Thankfully, in the early days, Carol Kelleher came to the rescue and helped put the books in order. Pat McVeigh joined in and pretty soon the demands were cut down to 23/7. Mike Schramm of The Pointer, the Rockaway Point News, was a huge help and didn’t have to be. I’m thankful he was so generous in those early days. I get calls and emails from readers – thanks! – telling me how much they enjoy the paper. Well, they wouldn’t enjoy it so much if I didn’t have Peter Mahon, Alex Karinsky, Paulette Mancuso, John Cori, Helen Kilgallen, Matt Whalen, Beef Chip, and Sharon Feldman and Pete Galvin contributing great columns every week. Boy, do I owe them thanks. And the supporting cast of the Civics Corner --- Hank Iori, Dolores Orr, Noreen Ellis, and Amanda Agoglia, are due a heartfelt thanks, too. And I’m thankful for other contributors as well such as guest columnists (John Sica for one!) and you letter writers and emailers and Word Searchers and people who like us on Facebook. Doug MacLeod and Ozzie Edwards not only supplied some great photos but offered to pitch in a million different ways. Thanks to Erica Farrell who de-

signed our masthead and convinced me to include the bicycle as part of our logo. And thanks to Bianca Fortis who’s written so many good stories and has been part of this since Day One. And Katie McFadden who writes and does it a little bit of everything, And there’s Fred Marino, the MVP, the unstoppable salesman who is often called Jesus Christ. He goes back to advertisers so often they say, Jesus Christ, you again? I’m happier this Thanksgiving because of Freddy. But I’ve gotta circle back to you, the readers. You’ve given advice, constructive criticism, undeserved praise, and even material. You’ve convinced me this crazy thing was a good idea. Even if the paper went out of business tomorrow, my thanks are forever.

The only remaining portion of the old Rockaway Beach Boardwalk is set to be demolished soon, most likely right after Thanksgiving, according to city and construction officials. Phase 4a of construction comprises Beach 73rd Street through Beach 86th Street. It should take between two and three months to remove the boardwalk. Officials said they will be removing it methodically – “surgically” – so as to keep railings, furniture elements, trash cans and even wood pieces intact. Work will be performed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. There may be extended work hours on some days, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays are reserved for makeup days in case of inclement weather, Luke Timmerman, a project manager for Skanska, said during a Monday night meeting. He said those will be the work hours to help address noise complaints by residents in the neighborhood. “I know you guys had some experiences a few years ago with pile driving,” he warned. “Yes, there

is going to be pile driving. We can’t around that – we have to do it.” Matthew Kehoe, an engineer with Ocean and Coastal Consultants, said there will be surveys conducted on homes and buildings located within 200 feet of pile driving to document the conditions of the buildings. Officials want to ensure that no damage is caused by the vibrations of the pile driving. However, even those located beyond 200 feet will likely feel vibrations, he said. “It’s like a leaky faucet,” he said. “You hear it because it’s new, not because it’s loud.” The surveys will be coordinated with the individual homeowners. Homeowners can refuse participation in the survey. Pile driving for Phase 4a is scheduled to end in April or May. Currently, Phase 1 of the boardwalk is expected to be completed by Memorial Day of 2015. Phase 2 should be completed shortly thereafter, by July 4. Dan Colangione, of the EDC, said the city cannot commit to a timeframe until “shovels are in the ground.”

Dear Editor: Why would THE COMMANDER (ferry story, Rockaway Times, 1113) be scrapped? I was one of those who took a ride on her during Breezy Point’s 50th Anniversary a few years ago and she seemed in excellent working condition. It would be a shame for this workhorse which has provided hundreds of thousands with enjoyment to meet the sad fate of a salvage yard. I remember years

Dear Editor: As I stated at the Knights of Columbus Hall going back when our community testified against the closing of Peninsula Hospital, “I hope the Marine Parkway Bridge never gets stuck in the up position” because if residents from Breezy Point or the west end of our peninsula needed to get to a Brooklyn hospital due to a heart attack or any life threatening illness they are going to be in big trouble. Well, Monday’s bridge mishap, proved my point. Also let us not forget when they test lift the Marine Parkway Bridge on occasion, the same potential trouble is in place. I remember when I had to travel to Brooklyn I would sometimes have to turn around head in the other direction to use the Cross Bay Bridge. Just think if you or a family member or a friend were in an ambulance when the Marine Parkway Bridge got stuck in the up position. NOT GOOD. Danny Ruscillo Jr.

Marine Parkway Bridge Stuck Open for Hours The Gil Hodges-Marine Parkway Bridge was stuck open for several hours Monday after a power problem occurred, according to an MTA spokesperson. The bridge was lifted for a boat to pass through at about 11:30 a.m., but then would not close. MTA spokesperson Judie Glave said the

problem was with a Con Ed feeder. The MTA and Con Ed are still investigating to determine exactly what the problem was. A generator was used at about 5 p.m. to finally lower the bridge. All roadway lights and signals were checked and the bridge reopened to traffic at about 6 p.m., Glave said.

If we run away from government, the negative misperceptions about it will take root, and even if people support our ideas, they won’t believe government can deliver.” You’re so right, Chuck. Charles Dickens once wrote “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” With that in mind, allow me to wish all of you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving celebration! The members of our Broad Channel VFW worked hard and long this past Sunday, preparing and serving a grand meal with all the trimmings, providing our vets with a memorable holiday experience as they hosted

their annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner for the residents of St. Alban’s Veterans Hospital. Many of the vets required hands on assistance while dining and our guys and gals at the Post were more than happy to provide it. One of the many ways our VFW Post funds their continual efforts to reach out and provide services to our veterans at St. Albans is via the several fundraisers the Post runs each year. And speaking of fundraisers (how’s

that for a segue?), stop by the Broad Channel VFW Hall Friday evening, December 12th at 7 pm and enjoy some food and libations in the company of your friends and neighbors while enjoying the music of Walker and Friends. 12th Community Board meeting, this was anything but the case. The Board decided to go against members who have spent countless hours over many months working with the Parks Department and the Economic Development Corporation to design a Boardwalk which would reflect the desires of the residents our communities! I walked out of that Community Board meeting totally disappointed. Disappointed in many of my fellow Community Board members who were too busy texting, sleeping, playing video games or just plain disinterested during the Board meeting to even ask a simple question or two prior to casting their vote. There was even one Board member who voted in favor of, voted against and abstained all for the same item! Yes folks, you can’t make this stuff up! Councilman Richards and Ulrich, please reevaluate each and every current Board member you recommend for appointment to the Community Board and neighbors please put in your applications. As many of you know our Queens Community Board 14 is essentially The Rockaway Peninsula and Broad Channel’s own little “City Council.” The Board is a very balanced, cross section of the Rockaway Peninsula and Broad Channel’s population. The full Board meets once a month to conduct the business of the Board. One major order of business of the Board is to hear the reports of the various committees which may have met during the month prior to full the Board meeting. Typically, when a Committee Chairperson presents their report to the full Board, they often ask for the full Board’s support of recommendations proposed by that particular committee. The chair usually makes a motion to have the full Board adopt the proposed recommendations. It is essentially a “no brainer” that the full Board would support the recommendations of the committee as it is the Committee which has put in the time and effort in hear all the details of all particular proposals which they are recommending. DOC by Peter Galvin, MD My last column touched on the rise of Diabetes occurring in this country, in large part due to a rise in obesity in children and adults. Today I would like to go into more detail about Diabetes. First of all anyone who has Diabetes and ignores it or thinks it won’t harm them is playing Russian roulette. Diabetes causes a host of serious problems such as coronary artery disease, kidney failure, blindness, vascular disease and neuropathies (nerve problems). The onset of diabetic complications is hastened by poor diabetic control. In other words ignore your Diabetes at your own peril. As I mentioned previously there are two types of Diabetes, Type I or insulin-dependent and Type II or non-insulin-dependent. While

both types are called Diabetes they couldn’t be more different. In Type I, which is mostly seen in children and young adults, the pancreas stops making insulin so the treatment is insulin replacement. Insulin is given by injection at intervals or an insulin pump can be implanted under the skin. There have been some promising studies using other treatments including stem cells. Type I diabetics can be subject to wild swings of their glucose, from very low causing loss of consciousness to high (usually less than 300) which can cause ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication. Abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting can be early signs of ketoacidosis and this is often how the disease is first diagnosed. On the other hand Type II diabetics do make insulin but its effectiveness is blunted by obesity, in

which fat cells are thought to absorb insulin, or a condition known as insulin resistance. Early symptoms can be unexplained weight loss, excessive thirst, urinary frequency and tiredness. Overweight Type II diabetics who are able to lose weight can sometimes manage the disease by diet and exercise alone. Treatment of Type II can be directed at getting the pancreas to make more insulin (Glipizide, Glynase) or decreasing insulin resistance and making the patient’s own insulin more effective (Metformin, Januvia). Insulin is also used in Type II, often in patients who have been diabetic for years and for whom oral medications no longer work. If you are diabetic I urge you to discuss your condition and treatment with your doctor and if you are overweight losing weight and following a diabetic diet are the two most important things you can do to improve your health. Also it is important to go for regular checkups as diabetic complications can be treated more effectively if discovered early. I have been asked to discuss PEDs (performance-enhancing drugs) in my next column. This column is published biweekly. The original Arverne-By-the-Sea was founded by Remington Vernam, a New York lawyer. The new village stretched from Beach 74th Street on the west to Beach 59th Street on the east. The giant Arverne hotel was built on Beach 69th Street close to the beachfront. The north boundary was the Long Island Railroad and on the south was the beachfront proper. There was a railroad station at each end of Arverne. Mr. Vernam, being of Dutch descent, called the place originally Avon-By-the-Sea! Avon being the

Dutch word for “Evening.” The word however is pronounced as “Arvernt” Later an “E” replaced the “T”. Today’s advertisement card is two sided and is packed with details of the May/June 1888 opening.

Condos Like Early Christmas for Beach 125th Street By Katie McFadden

A neighbor, John Taylor, likes what he sees. “I think it’s amazing what they’ve done in the last year. The condos are beautiful and much nicer than the abandoned buildings that were just sitting there.” Taylor’s enthusiasm stems from the completion of the Ocean Walk Condominium project on the beach block of 125th Street. It’s been a long road but the condos are now ready to become the home for 18 families. Real estate developer Jim Kennelly and his business partner, Charles F. McInnis, along with Kevin Smith, decided to take on the task of revamping 18 stalled condominiums on the land that was once occupied by the Washington Hotel. Kennelly’s longtime friend, William Procida, provided the funding for the project. Like the holiday wrapping coming off a present, the fences came down in mid-October, allowing neighbors to see the finished product and on November 16, potential buyers were welcomed to the first open house. The condominium project includes

nine buildings with two units each. There are two and three-bedroom units that are in a prime location, being within the P.S. 114 school district and a short walk from the beach. The three-bedroom units come with a terrace and a roof deck that give occupants a stunning ocean views, while those in the lower-level, two-bedroom units will have access to their own 1,000 sq.ft. backyard. Each unit comes with a private parking spot. Prices range between $469K and $559K. Visitors and neighbors like what they see. “At the open house, we had nearly 60 groups of people attending and interacting with the Corcoran group, based in Park Slope and led by Patricia Neinast,” Kennelly said. They’ve accepted four offers already. “It was nice seeing the reaction of all the people coming to see the property. People came from all different locations and were happy with what they saw,” McInnis said. “We put a lot of hard work and time into planning and construction and it’s very rewarding to see people en-

The condos are beautiful and much nicer than the abandoned buildings that were just sitting there.” “Being a resident of the block, I have seen the progress on the condominiums from the start to finish. They look great,” neighbor Frank D. said. “I’m a contractor myself and you can see that these homes were built with top-grade, quality material. It only adds value to the block and it’s a win/win situation for us. “ Kennelly is a retired firefighter who has been developing real estate since 1986. The Breezy Point resident has developed more than a billion dollars worth of property during his career including The Sycamore, Block Hall and 8 Beach Street in Manhattan, but this is his first project on the peninsula. “Having an opportunity to develop such a beautiful site 10 minutes from my home was something I couldn’t pass up,” Kennelly said. Kennelly says residents will start to move in by February. “I would like full occupancy by Memorial Day weekend,” Kennelly said. If interested in seeing the condos, there will be another open house from 12 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 30 at 176 Beach 125th Street.

At 76 million, we comprise 28 percent of the entire population. Still others are retiring from jobs to be available to provide childcare to their young grandchildren. Some retirees in the caretaker role may be caring for both parents and grandchildren. And few may even be caring for sick spouses in that mix. The role of caretaker, whether planned or unanticipated can be stressful, and take its toll on the boomer who had other plans for retirement. As Elderlaw and Estate Planning attorneys, most of our clients are in the middle class. Many are caring for an aging spouse, aging parents or grandchildren. When asked, most who are lucky enough to still have their parents say they plan to care for them at home, rather than place them in a facility. When asked if plans are in place for assumption of this caretaker role, the answer often is “no.” The physical aspect of caretaking can cause physical stress on the baby boomer- lifting, transferring, assisting to dress, can take a physical toll on the caretaker who maybe is not as strong as he/she was in

their younger years. Caring for the elderly whose conditions may not improve, but rather worsen over time may cause depression in the boomer caretaker, whose former social life may also be curtailed by the time demands of being the primary caretaker. Although caregiving for parents does go hand in hand with these challenges, most who take on the role are happy that they did and would do it again. As lawyers, in our office we recommend the caretaker have the necessary legal documents in place – health care proxy to step in and make medical decisions if needed; as well as Power of Attorney- to be named legal representative for all financial transactions. Having these documents completed with the assistance of a lawyer can serve to avoid the expense and delays of guardianship should the elderly person become incompetent to make decisions or manage his/her affairs. The boomers should also have these documents in place to make things easier for their own children to care for them down the road. Financial planning and legal planning with trusts should be done to protect as much of the seniors’ assets as possible so that if formal care is needed (home care or nursing home care) hard earned life savings or the value of the home (equity) will not be depleted in paying for that care. Baby boomers caring for grandchildren should consider asking the children’s parents for written authority for emergency care for the grandchildren. Having this type of document in place can prevent delays in emergency treatment for minor children in the event of an accident or illness when their parents aren’t immediately available. Nancy J. The weekend after Thanksgiving brings a welcome tradition for many Rockaway business: Small Business Saturday. On November 29th consumers will be asked to buy local and support their hometown businesses. The event was initiated in 2010 by American Express as a response to the consumerism of Black Friday. It was used as a way to promote small businesses – and the act of buying local – on a day that falls in between the mayhem of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Alwin Johns, who owns Ten Jays Furniture in Arverne, said one benefit of shopping at his store is that it offers better prices than big box stores on many of the same items. Another sticking point is customer service, he said: customers can reach the staff at any time of day. “We’re there whenever they need us,” he said. “We give so much more attention to customers.” One local participating business

is Currans Superior Meats on Beach 116th Street. One of the co-owners, Tom Murphy, said a key to Currans being a successful small business is its down-home approach to connecting with customers. “I don’t say, ‘Hi, how can I help you?’” Murphy said. “I say, ‘Hey John, how’s it going?’ That’s key.” Murphy also encouraged visitors to come to the business district. “If people just came out here and showed up, they would see that little by little we’re coming back,” he said. “We need as much support as we can,” he said. “If you’re interested in renting a store or buying a store, look into it. It’s a wonderful place that has so much potential.” Shopping at small businesses is imperative for the community to survive, he said. “We all have to support each other and stand together,” he said. Chop onions and celery and mince garlic. In a large heavy skillet brown the sausage over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, and transfer with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain. To skillet add 6 tablespoons butter (do not discard any fat in skillet) and cook onions, celery and garlic over moderately low heat, stirring, until celery is crisp-tender. Finely chop apples. Stir apples into vegetable mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until apple is softened. Mince parsley. In a large bowl toss together bread, sausage, vegetable mixture, parsley, broth and salt and pepper to taste and transfer to baking dish Dot stuffing with remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and bake, uncovered, in the middle of the oven until golden, about 30 minutes. (Stuffing may be baked while making gravy for the turkey)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees and butter a 2-4- quart shallow baking dish. Cut bread into ½ inch cubes. In 2 shallow baking pans arrange bread in one layer and toast in upper and lower thirds of oven until golden, 10-15 minutes.

The frenzy begins – the holidays! And the never-ending gift buying and spending money. Some don’t have a lot of extra money, yet feel the need to keep up and buy more and more. It can become a time of stress in many ways: not enough time, not enough money. It’s not healthy and the stress can bring on unhappiness and unease. Even if there is enough time and enough money, “consumerism” has grown to such great proportions; retail is everywhere. Buy more spend more. Why? The continuous focus outward does nothing to give us peace to

live life happily. The “stuff” is just stuff and provides momentary pleasure. That is not to say that there isn’t a place for it – there definitely is, but many of us realized two years ago that what we hold on to and treasure is just stuff. It is not the having and keeping that is what delights us, it is the memory of the feeling and experience that is magical. For some of us who have everything we want and need, the gift of spending time could be so welcome. Create a “gift certificate” that will allow you and the receiver to spend time together – whether it be for a meal or a walk or a visit to a museum or whatever, during

which you can just be together in all of the moments. This could be so great for kids, too; perhaps a little foreign, but it will teach them to value time with people. It can show them that what matters is human interaction. I recently read an article: 3 Singapore students created an app to give rewards for ignoring phones (texts, emails, calls), while with others. If two or more of the group touch their phones together, their phones are disabled and they get rewards by way of an apple tree growing. (newser.com, Nov. 19th. “App Rewards People for Ignoring Their Smartphones”, by Jenn Gidman) Perhaps it’s a way of trying to break the habits of everyone looking down all of the time and interacting with a thing. Who would have ever imagined that we need a reward to interact with another human being? The gift of spending time may not fit everyone on your gift-giving list. In that case, tell the stress to go away and think about that family member, child or friend. What is your connection? What would be meaningful? What experiences have you had together that you could memorialize? It could be very simple and not cost much or cost a lot, the idea is it is not about how much you spend, it is about what the gift offers for the receiver and for you.

The intention we have when we think, feel and do something definitely pervades the outcome of that thought, feeling or action. When a gift is truly given from the heart, it brings happiness to the giver – that internal smile: the feeling of comfort and joy -and, of course, to the receiver, because you took the time to really think about something that could be memorable and mean something. So, rather than giving in to the frenzy, stop and think about what it all means and what you want to contribute to those on your giftgiving list. Question/comment? Broad Channel, Bayswater Get Plane Noise Monitor In effort to accurately monitor noise caused by planes flying to and from JFK Airport, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder has worked with the Port Authority and has secured additional noise monitors in Bayswater and Broad Channel, Queens. “While we understand our close proximity to the airport comes with certain challenges, new technology upgrades and noise mitigation techniques can allow our families to sleep more peacefully at night,” Goldfeder said. “Installing these noise monitors will go a long way to accurately monitor noise impact on local communities and hopefully lead to relief for our hard-working families.” In September, Goldfeder sent a letter to the FAA and Port Authority of NY and NJ requesting the installation of airplane noise monitors in Bayswater and Broad Channel, Queens. In his letter, Goldfeder expressed that frequent flyovers from arriving and departing airplanes generate high levels of noise and negatively impact the quality of life for thousands of Queens families. In response to Goldfeder’s request, the Port Authority immediately agreed to install the noise monitors, as well as implement a flight tracking system on the agency’s

website so residents can monitor aircraft and specific decibel levels along flight paths over these communities. “This monitor will provide accurate levels of airplane noise that residents are exposed to,” said Rockaway resident Marilyn Chapoteau. “This information will be a useful tool in the fight to reduce airplane noise in our community.” Dan Mundy, president of the Broad Channel Civic Association, added, “This monitor will record all airplane noise that our island residents experience and will be critical as the Port Authority conduct their part 150 noise study,” Mundy said. “Broad Channel is the only neighborhood that is adjacent to the airport that does not currently have such a monitor and both the Assemblyman and the Port Authority should be commended for moving quickly to address the town’s concerns regarding this oversight.” Additionally, the Port Authority recently signed an agreement with Environmental Science Associates to conduct airport noise compatibility planning studies for JFK and LaGuardia over the next three years, with the goal of finding potential mitigation procedures to help alleviate residents’ concerns about aircraft noise.

The Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department is trying to repay a favor for some firefighters in Delaware. Tyler and Amber Bare, along with their two children, suffered a major fire in their home in Millville, Delaware on Nov. 18. The family lost everything. Michael Kahlau, a Rockaway firefighter, said that after Hurricane Sandy, the Bare’s local fire department sent a fire truck filled with equipment to Breezy Point. “The department they’re associated with stepped up after the storm to help us,” Kahlau said. “We wanted to reciprocate.” The family is asking for furniture as well as clothing. The sizes are men’s

34x32 jeans and large shirts, women’s size 14, girls size 7 and medium shirts and boys 2T/3T. They are also asking for gift cards that can be used at grocery stores. Tyler Bare is a former marine and has been a volunteer firefighter for more than 13 years. Amber Bare is a firefighter as well as an EMT. Donations will be collected at the Rockaway Point fire house. Our primary goal was to be a home to these people in need,” past Grand Knight Richie Knott said. The Knights practice the virtue of charity in many other ways by supporting members of the council and of the community, but they remain humble about their actions. “We do a lot of things that we don’t get credit

On the girls side Jackie Gallagher finished in 20:42 and sister Therese in 21:18 for Bishop Kearney and coach John Lovett. Jackie Thompson of Notre Dame Academy crossed in 21:42 and Carolyn Crocker of Archbishop Molloy in 22:24 on the 5k course at Bowdoin Park. Aidan Donohue finished his season with a 2nd place finish in the Jesuit Championships frosh race. On the collegiate side, Jimmy Buckley ran a season best 27:30 for Scranton at the NCAA D3 Mideast Regional. Patrick Goldberg ran a 28:04 at the Atlantic Regional, good for 2nd best in Mount St. Vincent history, while brother James wrapped up his career by taking 55 seconds off his previous best to finish in 29:23. The brothers credit the addition of coach Jim McVeigh to the CMSV staff for their success this season. The meets for D1 and D2 are run on 10k and Conor Gallagher clocked 33:29 and brother Liam 34:49 for Molloy College at the D2 Northeast Regional. Devin Rocks ran 34:13 for Fordham in the D1 Regional at Van Cortlandt Park and then 27:15 this weekend for 8k at the IC4A championships. It was a great season and they all look forward to returning home to run for the Rockaway Gliders and in the many local road races.
