EMTs Save Non-Breathing Baby

On Saturday, December 27, two EMT’s from FDNY EMS station 47 responded to a call over the radio of a baby that wasn’t breathing. EMTs Ian D’Souza and Chayim Spiegel retrieved a three-month old baby girl from a property near Beach 71st Street on Beach Channel Drive. The EMTs provided assisted ventilation to the infant and took her to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. According to a statement from St. John’s, the child was brought to the Emergency Department “due to cessation of breathing. At the ED, she was stabilized and treated until her oxygen levels rose from 78 percent to full functioning 100

Game Changer Dead: City Has New Plans For Sandy $$ Amendment Number 8 is now on the board. Since The City applied for the first round of Sandy relief money in Spring of 2013 with something called The Action Plan, it has reworked and resubmitted the plan to HUD for approval eight separate times. With each amendment, The City is required to seek public comment over a 30-day period. That public comment period is now underway. Comments can be submitted online or at a public hearing at Beach Channel High School on January 7, 2015 at 7PM. The new amendment kills The Game Changer Competition, which had been announced with great fanfare by the Bloomberg Administration. In May 2013 Mayor Bloomberg announced that The City had gotten federal approval of its plan about how it was to spend the first chunk of Sandy relief money. With $1.8 billion on the way, Bloomberg said $293 million would be earmarked for Business Recovery. Ninety million would be set aside for something called The Game Changer. Five Sandy-impacted areas, including Rockaway, would each get $18 million apiece for “innovative ideas for spurring economic development in hard hit

areas.” Several Rockaway groups put together plans hoping to win all or least some of the $18 million. More than one plan submitted called for an overhaul to parts of Beach 116th Street. One plan called for a hotel and a new shopping plaza. Another plan sought money for a new a commercial corridor at Beach 59th Street. Other game changing ideas came in plans for Mott Avenue, a new marina, and an artist resi-

dence and tech incubator. Applications for the prize were submitted in September 2013. What soon followed was a series of announcements by the Economic Development Corporation, the agency spearheading the Game Changer process. The announcements were consistent: we’re still reviewing the applications. And then the de Blasio administration took over City Hall in January 2014.

Boardwalk PIZZE

The Game Changer was effectively dead. The first sign the new administration had little interest in Game Changer was when an earlier amended action plan revealed the $90 million was cut to $84 million. Although the EDC continued to say it was “still reviewing” submitted plans, the City showed its hand in July in a statement to the cable news program, New York 1: “We weren’t convinced that the Neighborhood Game-Changer Investment Competition, as this administration inherited it, was set up to be the most effective way to spend these critical federal funds.” On December 19, the Mayor announced the new amendment and the Game Changer was effectively declared dead. In short, the new amendment calls for more money for Build It Back and less for business recovery. The NYC Recovery website provides highlights of the amendment with a link to the full plan. Among the highlights: Housing: The amendment describes $639 million in new housing recovery funds, enabling the City to serve all applicants to Build it Back, regardless of priority levels. The plan reallocates $200 million to Build it Back from other prior allocations: $96 million from

THE

Business programs, $44 million from Infrastructure and Other City Services, and $60 million from Resiliency Creates a Build it Back Temporary Relocation Program: Relocation assistance will be made available to all eligible homeowners who must vacate their homes for at least 30 days during construction. Three million to expand Build it Back’s workforce development initiatives: Sandy Recovery Workforce1 will connect qualified residents to job opportunities generated as a result of rebuilding and resiliency efforts. Proposes an option for homeowners to receive a direct grant to complete moderate repair projects (projects not requiring elevation) instead of having Build it Back complete the construction work. Business & Coastal Resiliency: The Action Plan Amendment reallocates funds from the inactive Neighborhood Game Changer program and the Business Resiliency Investment Program to more effective business-related programs and targeted key resiliency investments that will protect small businesses and commercial corridors and benefit entire neighborContinued on page 31

Just In Case You Forgot Mickey Rooney (dead in 2014). People loved the ferry which was extended through the summer. June. The Rockaway Times was born (you might not remember that, but I do. Like I said, you can remember significant events – the Rock Times was like giving birth to a twelve pound baby). Rockaway! an art exhibit spearheaded by The Rockaway Artists Alliance, MOMA PS1, and the Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy opened at Fort Tilden. July. Your beach was open; your beach was closed. The Parks Department said one thing and did another. August. The guy who could’ve been mayor, Anthony Weiner, was looking to open a restaurant in Rockaway. The actual Mayor turned his back to a large group of people from Rockaway who had come to City Hall to rally for making the ferry permanent. The Parks Department banned boogie boards for a few short days. Rockaway locals helped turn that one around. September. Whales were spotted up and down the beach. The Rockaway Times scored a great front page, thanks to Jay Butler who sent us a picture of his son, Joe, on a boogie board looking out at a whale, not all that far off shore. The Rockaway Word Search became eerily popular. Who knew? October, November, and December aren’t that long ago. I don’t have to provide reminders for those months, do I? All right, all right. The ferry went kaput in October. The boardwalk rebuild looked stalled (officials say all is on schedule. May I digress? They may be “on schedule” but the schedule is a sham!). Come November, Rockaway wasn’t the only one now complaining about The Mayor. De Blasio earned citywide scorn when he showed up late to the Flight 587 memorial. December was not that cold. And “not that cold” is not the kind of thing you remember. So, that’s the roundup. I guess not much happened in 2014. If I didn’t have to fill a column, I could’ve given you the short version. We lost a ferry and never got a boardwalk. But we did get a speed camera. Happy 2015!

I really don’t now if End of the Year lists are fun for readers or just a lazy way for writers to take up space in a newspaper or magazine. Maybe it’s both. Sometimes the lists are helpful in giving us a second chance at the news we’ve somehow missed. I’m guessing even the more oblivious among us remember Robin Williams died in 2014. But Mickey Rooney died, too. Who knew? As did another childhood star, Shirley Temple. I vaguely remember hearing they died but if somebody said they died in 2010 or 2011 I would’ve bought it. I don’t remember anything that happened in the first few months of 2014 except the cold. Everybody remembers the cold. But I don’t have a clue about much else. Unless something personally significant happened to you (birth, death, engagement) can you remember February, 2014? We remember it was cold and it sucked. After all the local kooks jumped in the ocean on January 1, 2014 does anyone remember anything else from that frozen month? While the usual media outlets will give you the best and worst of this and that on the national stage, here’s a rundown of what happened in Rockaway in 2014. January. It was cold. But it’s also the month that Mayor de Blasio announced the EXTENSION of the ferry (for three months). The Parks Department announced a delay in the boardwalk rebuild because piping plovers couldn’t stand the noise. February. It was cold. The YMCA opened. It was cold (after research I felt better about my memory: nothing really did happen). March. It was cold. The Mayor blew off the St. Patrick’ Day parade. Beach replenishment was supposed to have started; it didn’t. The Homeowners Flood Insurance Affordability Act was signed by the President. April. It was less cold (though on April 14th the temperature was 36 degrees). The Mayor announced that Build It Back would be fixed. The boardwalk rebuild got started. Parks announced that a whopping ten block stretch would be done in 13 months (Memorial Day, 2015). May. The Irish Circle closed. I handed in a resignation letter at another paper, figuring Boyleing Points would be

The City is looking for vendors who will sell beach stuff. Everything from beach chairs and bathing suits to sunglasses and sunscreen. Everything except food that is. That’s covered already. Oh, and no jewelry. They’d like vendors to rent umbrellas and beach tents, too. You can visit the Parks Department website to get all the details. We give you the gist of the RFP on Page 21. ***** We hear that notorious landlord Jay Deutchman has sold the old Rockaway Park Hotel on Beach 116th and his vacant house on Beach 114th. We’ve gotten our hopes up before. City records are not indicating a closing yet. And while we’re mentioning 116th Street we have to wonder. Now with the Game Changer competition officially kaput, we wonder if the owner, Esther Koenig, will do something on her own with the Sand Bar and the rest of the dilapi-

dated mess at the beach and 116th. ***** Crom Martial Training on Beach 92nd Street is quite the story. Their original gym on Rockaway Beach Blvd between Beach 91-92 got washed out during Sandy. As soon as they could, they opened up temporary quarters at Beach 88th Street. After a few months, they found a new spot on Beach 92nd Street and RBB. Now, they’re moving from a 2200 square foot gym to a 5000 square foot place directly behind the current spot. Their slogan is All It Takes Is Heart. Well, they’ve got plenty! ***** Looks like more noise for Broad Channel and old Arverne. The Daily News reported that an appeals court rejected a lawsuit by homeowners in Queens seeking to stop the Port Authority from expanding a runway at Kennedy Airport. The Eastern Queens Alli-

Last week’s Beef Chip column and the story about the Flea By The Sea attracted a lot of eyeballs. ***** Facebook is CLOSED and will not be accessible on February 29, 30 and 31. Please share. You didn’t fall for that did you? Some prankster started that one and at least two Facebook regulars we know fell for it, hard. We don’t break news all the time but here goes: there is no February 29 in 2015 and forget about the 30th and 31st. ***** Rockaway Red is a new wine that proved popular among locals during the holiday season. Not a bad idea since it is part of the evacuation route out of Far Rockaway and the road floods all the time. But Schumer suggested it could be part of the Army Corps Reformulation Study. Stop, Chuck. Just stop. We want the Reformulation Study done, finished. There won’t be jetties or real protection until it’s done. Adding more to the study will only drag it out longer. ***** Our deep admiration goes out to those who take the ocean plunge on January 1. Quite a few groups take part up and down the beach. We’d jump in but somebody has to take the pictures. Happy New Year! ***** Happy Birthday, Pat McVeigh!

Mayoral Failure Dear Editor (Re: The Rockaway Times editorial: A Broken Window At City Hall, 12/24) It is a given at this point that the window is permanently busted. In the last spate of post police assassination protests, setting the dangerous precedent of blocking vital services to residents of all communities, the order came down that no arrests shall be made. True to their duty the NYPD arrested not a single person as they snarled traffic in Manhattan, but they know and resent the cities leadership for doing so. With all due respect to your evenhanded nod to freedom of speech, none of these protests have been peaceful. Officers have been injured, spat on and verbally abused at very nearly all of these “peaceful protests”. Had this been a better city administration, the hash would have been settled some time ago. This is essentially why the police know this Mayor does not have them or the greater good of Gotham in mind. De Blasio has paid lip service, but substantively, he is the same leftist radical with the same beliefs and toxic rigidity one would come to expect from a hard left ideologue. Thomas Kerr

Dear Editor: (Re: Tubular Views, 12/24) Great idea to make 60th street beach a surfing beach, Most of the beach between 72nd and 60th street is closed all the time anyway (I think it’s because the parks department doesn’t have enough lifeguards), so why not use it for a surfing beach! I would think the Parks Department would love the idea - less lifeguards needed - less money spent. Mika Malinowski

Achieve New Year’s Goals with Gliders By Katie McFadden Starting the year off with the motto, “new year, new me?” Rockaway is now flush with fitness options between the many classes, gyms and the YMCA. One option to kickstart those New Year’s resolutions and stick to them is by taking classes at Rockaway Gliders fitness studio at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive. First opening as a small strength studio on May 1, 2013, Gliders has grown into a 200+ member, seven-instructor fitness center with a variety of classes. After realizing becoming a lawyer wasn’t her dream, Gliders owner and Rockaway resident, Mary Edwards, switched gears and started focusing her education on fitness, going on to acquire certifications in several types of workouts like spin, kettlebells and more. Edwards, 28, trained in Washington, D.C. for four years, before moving to Manhattan, where she worked at a gym for a year, but she found that it wasn’t for her. “The gym I worked at in the city turned me off. I didn’t like their approach to fitness. It was elitist and wasn’t a comfortable place for trying to get healthy and lose weight,” Edwards said. So she took matters into her own hands. “In this field, you’re either going to start your own business or work for a gym your

whole life. I didn’t want to work for a gym for the rest of my life,” Edwards said. With the help of her father, John Edwards, she took over a Sandyflooded space in her hometown, redid it and opened it as Rockaway Gliders, naming it after the local running club. “My biggest goal with this studio was to create a welcoming space for peo-

ple to come work out and feel comfortable and not judged. I wanted it to be a place where people can work toward their goals and feel welcome and feel happy leaving,” Edwards said. A little more than a year after opening, Edwards expanded the studio. “I wanted to add spinning to the studio. We first did spin with 10 bikes

cramped in a corner and it was getting to be too much for a small room.” She opened the second part of the studio on July 1, 2014. Gliders now offers classes such as TRX kettlebells, Hurricanes, gentle burn, spin and sculpt, spinning, bootcamp and kickboxing, taught by a staff that includes Edwards, Matt Long, Kristin Franchock, Grace Leahy, Chris Howard, Teeny Maguire and Diana Safyan. The additional staff stepped in when Edwards had to deal with a family emergency in May. On Memorial Day, Mary’s mother, Kathy Edwards, suffered from a stroke that was brought on by a brain tumor and resulted in a coma. “They told us at the ER that she was dead. It was a pretty intense time,” Edwards said. “She was in the ICU for 11 days and acute rehab for 60 days at Mount Sinai.” When her mother came home, Edwards started to rehabilitate her every day in the studio. “She was super weak at first and could barely walk. We were at a point where we were just trying to get her to sit up in a chair,” Edwards said. Now, just six months later, Kathy Edwards’ condition has improved significantly. “She’s not 100 percent back to where she was, but she’s doing great,” Edwards said, adding that her mother is able to do Continued on page 31

DOC By Peter Galvin, MD

Lately it seems that gluten-free foods are so commonly seen that being gluten free must be a good or healthy choice. Let’s see if that is true. Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, barley, rye and triticale, a cross between wheat and rye. Gluten is commonly found in many foods including some you wouldn’t think of as containing gluten. Of course, foods made from wheat and flour like breads, rolls, cookies, pies and pastas are obvious gluten sources but many other foods like beer, croutons, communion wafers, gravies, soups, rice mixes, snack foods, sauces, salad dressings, deli meats and matzo may not be so obvious. Avoiding gluten-containing foods is the mainstay of treatment of a

Page 11

disease variously known as celiac disease, sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy. When people with celiac disease consume gluten their immune system creates antibodies to gluten. The antibodies then attack the lining of the intestines where gluten is absorbed. This destroys the intestinal lining and prevents proper absorption of other nutrients, eventually causing malnutrition. Symptoms of celiac disease may include abdominal bloating and pain, gas, diarrhea, pale stools, weight loss, anemia, muscle cramps and bone pain, sores in the mouth, tingling in the legs and missed menstrual periods. Celiac disease can be diagnosed by taking a careful history from the patient and performing a blood test to look for anti-gluten anti-

bodies. Sometimes an endoscopy and intestinal biopsy are also needed. Avoiding gluten is not always easy. A true gluten-free diet is a big change for most people. Celiac patients must be food label readers and must always ask about gluten when eating out. Some people, while not having actual celiac disease, have a gluten sensitivity and find that they feel better and have fewer abdominal symptoms when remaining gluten free. To the rest of us consuming gluten or staying gluten-free doesn’t make much of a difference. It is helpful to remember that some foods may be contaminated by gluten in the manufacturing process. Look for the words “may contain gluten” on the package. Contamination may also occur at home on food preparation surfaces or in appliances like a toaster. If a product contains a “gluten-free” label it is regulated by the FDA. Also be aware that products labeled “wheat free” may still contain gluten. Food additives such as malt flavoring and food starch may contain gluten. So may medications and vitamins which use gluten as a binding agent. If you’re not sure, don’t buy it. If you think you may have celiac disease talk to your doctor. You can feel better with a little help. This column is published biweekly. I decided to try it with chicken cutlets … YUM! - Sharon Feldman 2 thick chicken cutlets (approximately 4-5 when filleted) 1 packet onion soup mix 1 can jellied cranberries About 1-1-1/2 cups of chicken broth (I use my own homemade) 1/8 cup water, if needed ¼ - ½ bag baby carrots 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional) 1 small onion (optional, since you are using onion soup mix) Gravy Thickener: 1/8 cup cold water Approximately 2 T. corn starch

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Place cutlets in pan along with the carrots in a bowl, mix the soup mix, cranberries and chicken broth. Taste sauce to see if you want to add the brown sugar. Pour mixture over the cutlets. Lay the carrots (and onions, if using) on both sides of the cutlets. Cover tightly with foil and bake 90 minutes. Take pan out, mix the sauce over the cutlets. If the sauce is not thick like a gravy, take a measuring cup and add the cold water and whisk in the corn starch. Place back in the oven for another 10-15 minutes. Take out and let rest for 15 minutes. Slice the cutlets and serve with stuffing, potatoes or rice.

This rare photo taken at Seaside Beach in 1891 shows children of all ages having a great time romping near the surf. Those that were tall enough are hanging from the safety lines and when a wave came in all the little ones scattered! Each section of the beach had its own colored flags for those who wandered – in order to get back! But supervision was good in the old days!

Facts You Probably Don’t Need

Headlines Not Found in The RT (Yet)

We don’t verify these facts – in fact, they might not be facts. But the internet says they are. ☛☛☛

We know we’re tempting fate and know it’s only a matter of time before we produce some headline that will live on in infamy but these classics make us feel better about typos and other blunders we’ve delivered in 2014. Actual headlines found in newspapers:

☛ New Year is the oldest of all holidays, as it was first observed in ancient Babylon as many as 4000 years ago. ☛ Julius Caesar made January 1 the first day of the year. But England and its Americans colonies only started calling it the New Year in 1758. ☛ You can spend all day asking people if they know the words to “Auld Lang Syne” and you won’t find anybody who does. (We don’t if this is a fact but we believe it). ☛ More vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday, statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau reveal. ☛ In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. ☛ In Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico, some families stuff a large

doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories. ☛ Forty-five percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. The top resolutions are: to lose weight, get organized, to spend less and save more, to stay fit and healthy, and to quit smoking. While nearly half of all Americans make resolutions, 25 percent of them give up on their resolutions by the second week of January. ☛ It was once believed that the first visitor on New Year’s Day would bring either good luck or bad luck for the rest of the year, depending on who he/she was. ☛ New Year’s day, 2015, is 68 days until the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Parade

wasn’t fair that they don’t get discounts. On October 17, 2013, a lower court judge rejected the plaintiffs’ claims that resident toll discounts were unconstitutional and the issue was then brought to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan. The appeal presented the question of whether resident discounts for some violate the plaintiffs’ constitutional right to travel or the dormant Commerce Clause. On Wednesday, December 24, the appeals court affirmed the original decision and ruled that the resident discounts do not violate the right to travel and the dormant Commerce Clause and are therefore not unconstitutional.

A federal appeals court has ruled that bridge toll discounts for Rockaway and Broad Channel residents are constitutional. In the case of Janes v. Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Auth., certain individuals from New Jersey and other parts of New York argued against the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, saying it was unfair that residents of Staten Island get a discount on crossing the Verrazano Bridge and that Broad Channel and Rockaway residents get discounts on the Marine Parkway and Cross Bay bridges. The plaintiff’s claimed that although they’re not residents, they often utilize those crossings for work and personal purposes and it

Electronic Garbage Banned Starting January 1 The days of tossing the old TV to the curb are over. Starting January 1, it will be illegal for New Yorkers to throw away most electronics. As the final stage of the 2010 New York State Electronic Equipment and Reuse Act goes into effect, New Yorkers will no longer be able to throw certain electronics into the garbage. These items include computers, televisions, cathode ray tubes, small scale servers, computer monitors, keyboards, computer mice, fax machines, scanners, printers, small scale servers, VCRs, DVRs, DVD play-

ers, digital converter boxes, cable or satellite receivers, video game consoles, mp3 players, tablets or e-readers. Throwing away these items can result in a $100 fine for each item. Light bulbs and batteries can still be thrown out. The new law was signed into effect for environmental and financial reasons. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, electronics are the fastest growing category of solid waste in the United States and can contain both valuable and harmful materials, so they should be recycled responsibly.

In New York City, there are a number of options for what to do with old electronics instead, but for most Rockaway residents, none of them are easy. One option is to drop off electronics at a store like Best Buy, Goodwill, Salvation Army, the Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse, or Staples (no TVs). None of these drop-off locations are on the Rockaway peninsula. The closest options are Best Buy in Kings Plaza or Gateway Center, the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Nostrand Ave in Brooklyn or Archer Avenue in Jamaica or Staples on Ocean Avenue or at Gateway Center or in Richmond Hill. Some businesses offer mail-in or pickup programs. Best Buy will remove your old electronic device when a new product is purchased and delivered from Best Buy. Staples offers free shipping through its technology trade-in program. Dell will pick up any Dell product for free through its FedEx Package Return Program. For all other brands, contact the manufacturer directly. Another option is to drop off electronics at SAFE Disposal Events, which are held by the Sanitation Department and will be announced throughout the year. You can also donate or sell working electronics, which means Craigslist might soon see more listings.

The only individuals or families that might not have to go out of their way to dump their electronics are those who live in large apartment buildings. Taking into mind that more than 50 percent of New York City residents live in apartment buildings and can’t lug around large electronics on the subway, the City has developed a special program for those in buildings with more than 10 units. Through e-cylceNYC, the Sanitation Department will pick up electronics on site at large apartment buildings that register for the program. Buildings with more than 10 units can arrange to have electronics picked up from a storage room in the building. Buildings with more than 50 units can acquire locking bins through the program where electronics can be stored. When the storage rooms or Continued on page 29

Even In The Winter By Rebekkah Thompson

When I nervously shared with my husband, Jim, that it was my turn to write for the Rockaway Backyard Collective column, he responded with, “It’s winter. There isn’t anything growing.” One might think that a pessimistic and negative attitude, but I am so grateful to him. He really got me thinking about this idea of “growth.” What can grow in winter, especially in Rockaway with the winds always stronger and frigid temperatures always colder than the inland boroughs? I moved to Rockaway from Brooklyn 8 years ago. My first winter in Rockaway I was going stir crazy feeling like I was in some abandoned ghost town. Even as I got to know my neighbors joining them for summer barbeques, they became like figments of my imagination. Bitter high winds kept me wondering if friendships would withstand long winter months isolated in our houses and apartments. I learned that it really takes an extra effort to maintain these social networks because neglect can have a damaging effect. It gets harder to invite a neighbor for coffee as lines of communication become more and more distant with time. Perhaps that’s why many past efforts to organize for various causes in Rockaway have fizzled out. In order to stay connected requires intentional effort and, for a place like Rockaway, creativity. In the book, Toward Sustainable Communities: Resources for Citizens and Their Governments, Mark Roseland defines these efforts to create and sustain social connectedness as social capital. Capital in this context is synonymous with assets (a community’s resources and benefits). The beauty of social capital is that it doesn’t require a certain amount of money or even structural confines. To build and multiply only requires commitment and creativity. So what are some of our community’s resources and benefits? How can we use them to strengthen and increase our social capital during the harsh Rockaway winter months? We are the generation of Facebook. Use it to your community’s advantage. I am utterly fascinated and encouraged by the ongoing “posting” and “liking” on the Rockaway Backyard Collective Facebook group. I can hardly wait for Spring to try out new gardening tips from articles posted. Social institutions: There are so many established organizations, such as civic associations, libraries, churches and synagogues in Rockaway that

have ongoing community engagement projects or missions. House on the Rock Church located at 91-08 Rockaway Beach Blvd, recently, organized dozens of children and adults to go Christmas caroling at a local precinct and firehouse. Following the caroling, Pastor Gary invited the entire group to his home for hot chocolate granting an opportunity to not just get warm but also develop social ties. Proximity: Indeed, transportation is a sour topic, but I am going to reach for a positive in that antagonizing conundrum. Our isolation is our strength. Being enclosed is not always bad. There’s familiarity, comfort and trust. A girlfriend of mine just organized a weekly coffee meet-up at Dunkin Donuts, and I attend a prayer group held in a different neighbor’s home weekly. Bake a few dozen snickerdoodles to distribute as gifts to your neighbors. Reap the benefits of living in a close knit community. Opportunity: There is a great deal of discussion about what Rockaway lacks. We long for many of the benefits and opportunities granted to other boroughs. This is totally cliché, but I’m going to go for it – turn those lemons into lemonade. The Rockaway Backyard Collective along with so many community groups and organizations old and new developed out of a need, an issue or problem. People decided to create an opportunity for change. The Rockaway community now has the opportunity to make options about food unavailable before. The winter CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) recently established by Antoinette DeMetropolis is sold out, and the meat CSA continues to make deliveries of fresh, organic and humanely grown meats monthly. (For more info: Facebook, Rockaway CSA or Herondalefarm.com.) Opportunities are on the rise for Rockaway. So while the ground hardens, flowers and plants have turned brown and withered and Rockaway’s winter wind threatens, there is still a pulse beating steady and strong nourishing the growth of increased opportunities and benefits. The Rockaway Backyard Collective is a group of residents that use their land or home space to grow food. This effort supports community sustainability and resiliency post Hurricane Sandy. We grow as a community sharing our knowledge, labor, stories and love for fresh and natural foods. We believe a shared harvest means healthier living and community unity. Visit us at our Facebook group: Rockaway Backyard Collective.

with today’s electronics. There is a place and time for the internet but it must be limited. I am wondering how many people sleep with their phones next to them and the first thing they do is go on the internet. Crazy but true. Thich Nhat Hanh was a Buddhist monk who taught so many how to meditate and be mindful. He says, “The miracle of mindfulness is, first of all, that you are here. You are here, alive, completely alive. That is a miracle.” So simple, yet so powerful. We are alive and it may only be for today so why on earth would we choose to spend our last minutes on the internet! To be fully present is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself. It is a place where there are no worries, no anxieties, no suffering. You are just here in the moment. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and exhale fully. Breathing in you are calm, breathing out you are peace, breathing in I dwell on this beautiful moment, breathing out I know this moment to be bliss. Practice and it will come freely. Do not try hard, do not expect results, just practice. Moving into 2015, I plan to live more fully in the present moment. I intend to listen, feel and touch more, to use all the gifts God gave to me and when my present time is up, I want to have used all my gifts, and lived life to its full potential. What a wonderful life it is to be in the present moment. For most people this is the place you will find your bliss. Not in the past or future but right here, right now. As we look forward to 2015 there are so many things we will remember from our past and will bring with us into the New Year. We begin to plan for our future with good intentions. However, there are no guarantees in life so perhaps you can plan accordingly and be prepared for almost anything. My suggestion is be more fully present in each moment as you come into 2015. I, for one, will never take anything for granted and will honor and respect the suffering that comes with life. This I have learned from my past and I am taking it with me as a lesson. Most people have some kind of devastation or painful loss during their lifetime. It is in these times you can bring yourself in the present moment that would help free your pain. If you live in your past you will yearn to be there, if you live in your future, you will be disappointed when things do not turn out the way you expected. Learn from your past and move freely into your future gracefully and peacefully. Being fully present is a beautiful thing and you will learn so much about yourself and others if you truly are present with one another. The cell phone is the most damaging device to your presence. In fact, you are not fully present when looking at your phone and trying to have a conversation with someone. Today’s world has little time for the present world

bins are full or contain more than 20 items, a building owner can contact e-cycleNYC and the items will be picked up. Buildings with 250 units or more can hold recycle events coordinated through the program. Those living in houses or small apartment buildings, like many in Neponsit and Belle Harbor, won’t have the luxury of disposing electronics so easily, and for seniors or those with disabilities, it will be even more difficult. Assemblyman Phil

Goldfeder hopes to change that. He wrote a letter to Sanitation commissioner Garcia urging that the agency’s new e-cycleNYC electronics recycling program be adjusted to serve seniors and people with disabilities in southern Queens and Rockaway. “Southern Queens and Rockaway has one of the largest senior populations in the city, with many living in 1-2 family households currently excluded from the Sanitation Department’s e-cycleNYC electronics recycling program,” Goldfeder said.

more difficult workouts that include the use of battle ropes and weights. Her mother has recently been able to get back into everyday routines like grocery shopping. Edwards says the past few months of trying to balance work and caring for her mother were made a little easier with the help of her staff. “I was always at the hospital for the first few months, but the timing worked out well because I had just hired all the other trainers and they really stepped up to the plate when I couldn’t be there,” Edwards said. “It has definitely been stressful, but it hasn’t been nearly as stressful as it could have been because I’ve had a lot of help.” While rehabilitating her mother, Edwards has continued to motivate her students. In October, Gliders launched a “Drop for Dough” contest with a $1,000 incentive for losing the most body fat in six weeks. More than 60 students participated and many had great success. The cash prize went to Kendra Lane, who dropped 15 pounds and 8.8 percent body fat by attending at least six classes a week. Edwards will hold the contest again starting Monday, January 5. However the cash prize will be split into two, with $500 going to both a male and a female winner.

hoods, as well as to the Build it Back program (as previously announced) to ensure all homeowners will be served. The business and coastal resiliency programs include: $3 million for Business PREP (Preparedness and Resiliency Program), a business resiliency program that will provide support for small businesses to implement operational and physical resiliency measures. Assistance could include one-on-one site visits for resiliency assessments, the development of an online business resiliency and preparedness tool to help businesses plan for improved resiliency, and educational resources such as targeted workshops featuring technical experts. Business PREP will be open to all small businesses impacted by Hurricane Sandy, and components of the program will be avail-

Those who want to participate can buy a special $200 package that includes a six-week membership with unlimited classes, plus a 20 percent discount on personal training and a 20 percent discount on a weight loss diet called “Mary’s Meals.” The nutritious meals, which are made fresh by Chef Elio of The Wharf, can be ordered Mondays-Thursdays during the morning and are ready for pickup by 4:30 p.m. The winter menu includes stuffed chicken, acorn squash and a grilled chicken salad, turkey meatloaf and turkey chilli. Edwards hopes to put more focus on the meal plan in the new year. Those looking to jumpstart their resolutions can also take advantage of special transformation packages that include personal training sessions, Mary’s Meals and a choice of group classes. able to businesses citywide. The program is expected to assist up to 500 small businesses across the city. Fifteen million for targeted infrastructure and resiliency improvements in key commercial corridors throughout the Rockaways, such as Beach 108th Street, Mott Avenue, and surrounding business districts. These funds are complemented by $8.2 million from the State’s NY Rising program. Businesses in the Rockaways continue to struggle from a decline in economic activity, in part due to surrounding vacant storefronts and damaged streetscapes. These funds will cover streetscape and stormwater management upgrades and the creation of new open space to renew the viability and resiliency of the commercial thoroughfares, benefiting over 200 businesses and 2,000 jobs.

with young children and elderly to be able to stand out of the sun while waiting for a ride and a meeting point before heading to the beach. I don’t know, but somehow I find this whole idea somewhat fishy and extremely ill conceived! Who at Parks thinks this is beneficial to the residents of The Rockaway peninsula? Does anyone want to see Shore Front “PARKWAY” turned Shore Front BLVD? Does anyone want to see our Parkway strewn with even more shipping containers than the ones used as storage for lifeguards? Does anyone want our already struggling businesses along Beach 116th street or Rockaway Beach Blvd or Arverne by the Sea to face competition from vendors from NYC Parks? Do the residents of Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor or Neponsit want to see vendors selling souvenirs and t-shirts from shipping containers for the summer at the beach ends of their streets at Beach 126th or Beach 131st or Beach 149th ? I just hope that this idea for an ill-conceived plan for vending outside of the designated concession area is rethought!

How About Requests For Common Sense? In the NY Daily News this week it was reported by the paper’s best reporter, Lisa Colangelo, that The NYC Parks was seeking Request For Proposals(RFP) for venders along Shore Front Parkway and Peninsula wide. Parks will be looking for vendors to sell everything from sunscreen to beach umbrellas and tents to Rockaway themed clothing. Some of the suggested sites for these prospective vendors to set up shop are along Shore Front Parkway, at

Beach 32nd street and at the flagpole at the beach on 116th Street. And these are only a handful mentioned out of 10 planned locations. If you can envision Shore Front Parkway and the areas proposed by Parks for vending, they are the same site where our beloved concrete “Waves” now stand. These waves, originally built, as bus shelters are now the only shade structures along Shore Front Parkway. These are the drop-off points for many disabled people, families

This Idea has never been presented to Community Board 14 or any local civic association; it should be reevaluated with some serious community input. I know my 2 cents would be to suggest local venders like we’ve seen the last few beach seasons. I would propose working with local vendors, like the local entrepreneurs in their vending truck called “End of the A” or the crafts people who set up shop this past summer selling their artisanal crafts along the Boardwalk Islands. I’d also like ask Parks this question: If you the have time and capacity to plan an RFP for vending along Shore Front “PARKWAY” and throughout the Peninsula, surely you have enough collective brainpower to aggressively plan RFPs to finally replace our 28 Hurricane Sandy damaged handball courts, our basketball courts, our shuffle board courts, our botanical flower beds, our sitting areas, our skate parks, our hockey rink and our walking paths. And here’s another idea FINISH OUR BOARDWALK! Hey Parks, Lets think: PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT! It’s the human thing to do!
