Great Christmas Light Fight Champ to Illuminate Saturday By Katie McFadden

On Monday, December 3, thousands watched as host Taniya Nayak pulled up to the Mure home in Neponsit to announce that Rockaway’s Little North Pole was declared the winner of ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight. Locals were filled with hometown pride and others across the country had tears in their eyes as Mure announced that the $50,000 prize money would be going straight to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the cause he’s been decorating his house for, for over two decades. On Saturday, December 8, Mure’s doing it all again as The Little North Pole (144-03 Neponsit Avenue) will once again be lit for the season with an even bigger reason to celebrate coming off of Monday’s win. “It feels great. It’s great for the neighborhood, great for Rockaway and great for the kids that live every day with juvenile diabetes,” Mure said of the win. On Monday night’s first ep-

isode of The Great Christmas Light Fight viewers across the country were introduced to a set of “heavy hitters” with properties as large as 100-acres decorated to the max. As this is typical of the show, it’s one of the reasons Mure was adamantly against doing it when producers approached him. Yet after making a compromise for the potential prize money to go directly to

JDRF if they won, Mure eventually agreed to do the show. In the second episode of the evening, Mure’s Little North Pole was the first one featured out of four decorated average-size homes from across the country. The local home that has impressed thousands over the years, had some stiff competition against a Disney Christmas Wonderland in Florida,

an inflatable-filled labyrinth in Illinois and a 60-foot tree and massive stockings in California. However, as judge Nayak pulled up to the Mure home, only to be surprised by a crowd of nearly 5,000 people, her jaw dropped to the floor before the house was even illuminated. Nayak called the crowd, “the biggest in the history of the show.” And when Santa led the countdown and the house lit up, Nayak was seemingly blown away from the classic figures, an animatronic Santa’s workshop in the garage, a real-working carousel, skyhigh wooden soldiers and even a giant menorah and dreidels for those who celebrate Hanukkah. When she learned why Mure does this each year, to raise money for JDRF, tears filled her eyes. It was the large crowd, the sense of inclusion, and the charitable aspect that gave The Little North Pole the edge that it needed to beat out the competition and come on top. Dark Side of The Moon Sheesh, I write a happy-thanksgiving-to-all column and some people took it to mean I was gonna be Mr. Happy and Peppy (and bursting love). There’s not much to be happy about when it turns dark around 1 o’clock. I hope I don’t win Powerball during this time of year. I’d be such a buzzkill. You won $650 million! And they’d present me with that huge check and I would be like, yeah, but it’s gonna be dark right after lunch. Sucks. The only thing that makes me happy is knowing there are

so many people in the same bummed-out camp. That whole SAD thing? Seasonal Affective Disorder? I’m a believer. And it’s easy to spot the afflicted. You make eye contact and in an instant you know if you’ve spotted a sad sack soulmate. Or worse. Which reminds me how warped most of us are. Not only do we get bummed out because the sun is just a daily blip but we get cheered up by TV killers. There’s a reason they don’t do crime dramas and serious stuff in the summer. Nobody wants to be a serial killer in

the summer. But in the winter, a lot of us identify with the criminally insane. Guys want to be Ray Donovan; ladies, too. Netflix and Amazon Prime series are popular because they offer dark stuff in the dark months. Network TV has upbeat commercials and shows with happy endings. Who needs that crap? If you watched The Sopranos, you must’ve liked Tony who personally killed eight people and ordered the deaths of plenty more. Did you see The Wire? The most popular characters were essentially murdering, thieving drug dealers. Vikings, just starting a new season, has some very charming and delightful characters, both men and women, who also happen to chop off heads and gut others like we might park a car. I haven’t yet tried Game of Thrones but I get the sense it’s filled with murderous characters who happen to be the most popular. Lots of people must’ve liked Dexter. The eponymous show ran for eight seasons. He only killed 135 people. Imagine if we had friends like

Page 5 our favorite TV characters. Oh, that guy John, what a great guy. Yeah, he robbed a bank and shot an old lady but he’s so….he’s so funny! You get to introduce your buddy to others: Hey, everybody I want you to meet Frank. He’s only killed a couple of people, ran a brilliant scam, will stab you in the back, but he loves puppies. You’re supposed to go out with another couple for dinner but your wife says, Doreen and Joe are gonna be late. Joe’s gotta shoot a couple of drug dealers on the way. And he might stop off and hold up a Brink's truck. That’s cool. Love when he does that. We’re twisted. We watch Narcos and we kinda root for Pablo Escobar. What’s that about? It’s gotta be the lack of sunlight. I know I’m speaking for the normal, sane people who are rightly miserable because we live on the dark side of the moon. We know you don’t turn your back on a person who’s just too happy this time of year. The winter’s coming, darkness is here. Whatever I do, I’m a good guy otherwise.

***** Friendly neighbors with shared driveways often share car keys as well to make car jockeying a bit easier. Our tip for the week is, don’t leave the shared keys in the car. A regular thief turned into a car thief when he came across a set of keys after entering a car to look for loose change and other valuables. Oh, another tip: lock your car. ***** We said it was an easy, well-paying job that has no real value. So far 21 people, most facing term limits, have announced plans to run for Public Advocate, according to an item in The New York Times. Eric Ulrich is among them. ***** And speaking of running for office, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has announced that she’s running to become the Queens District Attorney. She’s term-limited in the BP position and the DA’s office has no such restraints. In fact, she can run for mayor and other jobs if she becomes DA without giving up the position. She’ll have competition for the DA post as City Councilman Rory Lancman and former judge Greg Lasak are seeking the job as well. (Not to mention that current DA, 86-year-old Richard Brown, has not said whether he’ll run again or not). ***** Speaking of the BP, Katz said Amazon should help pay for the Queens-Brooklyn Connector. We say Amazon should help pay for the reactivation of the Rockaway Branch line (aka Queens Rail). ***** We know, we know. The mail service stinks in Rockaway. The bright side? We’re

not alone. Two individuals in other parts of Queens were caught “fishing” mail and arrested. Seems these fellows cast their lines into mailboxes and reel in letters with some kind of fetching device. Mail often has checks and cash, especially this time of year, and apparently isn’t safe even sitting in a mailbox. ***** Kudos to Scholars’ Academy and those who helped add a new green space and greenhouse just outside the building. If any area could use some green help, it’s the area near the sewage treatment plant, not far away. ***** What gives? Those in Dayton Beach Park buildings, including 8400 and 8600, recently complained after their gas service was shut off without much warning, for more than five days. Some expressed fears of not having gas for even longer as some apartments still needed to be entered to shut off the stove gas. The disruption has been a big inconvenience, es-

Esposito was fired by a Deputy Mayor because of the botched city response to the snow storm a couple weeks back. The Deputy asked Esposito to resign and he refused. And then the Mayor botched the explanation of it all. It was a City Hall mess and guess what? The whole story was broken by Rockaway’s own Katie Honan in The Wall Street Journal. Way to go, Honan.

awarded the coveted Light Fight trophy and requested that the prize money of $50k go straight toward JDRF. On Monday night, friends and family gathered inside the Mure home to watch the show live and celebrate the exciting win. Even though Mure knew they had won, as the announcement was filmed last year, he says the way the show was done came as a pleasant surprise, and he was able to celebrate in the joy of those around him that didn’t know the outcome, including JDRF President and CEO David Rapp and some of those that Mure says have been instrumental in making The Little North Pole come together each year. Lighting up The Little North Pole is no easy feat. Each year, Mure has a team of friends that volunteer their time to put together the extravagant display and plan the official lighting ceremony complete with entertainment, food and a visit

from Santa who comes bearing gifts. Among the many that help out, Mure says he especially expresses his gratitude to Richie Keane, whose wife passed away of a brain aneurysm around the time of last year’s lighting and couldn’t be there when it was filmed, and friend, Tony Orzano. “The Little North Pole can’t be done without them,” Mure said, as he celebrated the Light Fight trophy win with them. However, it was the cheers beyond the inside of the Mure home that may have been even louder. Following the victory, people from across the country, with family members impacted by juvenile diabetes, reached out to Mure through social media to express their gratitude for what he does for the cause. Of their support, Mure said, “It makes you cry. That’s how happy it makes you feel.” Those in Rockaway were certainly also thrilled to see a piece of their hometown come out on top, and Mure says it's all because the neighborhood came out for him. “It really was Rock-

I needed something to give me leverage against those other gigantic homes and there was no better way to do it than surprise the judge with the crowd on the night of the lighting,” he said. On Saturday, December 8, Mure hopes those crowds will be there again for this season’s lighting of The Little North Pole. The big block party kicks off at around 3:30 p.m. with the official lighting after it gets dark. As usual, there will be food donated from various businesses, plenty of entertainment from local schools and dance studios and up-and-coming entertainers that will appeal to attendees of all ages, and the whole thing will be emceed by Goumba Johnny and WCBS-FM's Joe Causi. However the biggest celebrity of all will be none other than Santa Claus, who will have toys in hand for all kids in attendance. Of course this year’s lighting will have the added excitement

After Saturday’s big feature, on Tuesday, December 11, Mure will be doing it all again on a smaller scale for a special group of handicapped children at 10:30 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. for Rockaway’s Special Athletes. Santa is expected to visit both events. As an extra treat for Mure this year, he won’t have to worry about the electric bill as East Coast Energy Company learned of what he does each year and has generously offered to cover the cost of electricity for the display this year, which is another big win for Mure. But The Great Christmas Light Fight win is one he can celebrate with everyone. “We are extremely happy. Unlocked Doors Lead to Grand Theft Auto You might want to be more cautious about locking your cars and not leaving valuables, especially keys, inside. On Sunday, December 2, a group of young men were searching through unlocked cars in Rockaway Park, when they came across a few cars with the keys in them. An act of petty theft then became a case of grand theft auto as the suspects drove off in the cars, leading police into a late-night search. At around 11:30 p.m., two cars were stolen from Beach 124th Street. The two cars were allegedly in a shared driveway and the owners left their keys inside for neighbors to move them if needed. The group of suspects took advantage of the situation by taking off with both cars. According to the owner of one of the cars, one car was recovered at the corner of Beach 124th, where three young men jumped out and ran. The other

car was allegedly found parked outside the St. John’s Home on Beach 112th Street. The cars were returned to the owners. Police spent the night searching for suspects on streets and on the boardwalk, and according to the 100th Precinct, three perps were arrested for Grand Larceny Auto. In a post to the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook group, the owner of one of the stolen cars posted, “Moral of the story: lock your car doors ‘cause they’re checking and if you have a shared driveway don’t leave the keys in the car even for an hour! There was a whole crew going down blocks last night.”

The workshop will be held at Pheffer Amato’s district office, 95-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, on Wednesday, December 12th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pheffer Amato previously hosted a successful, widely attended workshop in 2017 and decided to host another workshop for the Committee so that they could expand the reach of their work in South Queens. “Citizens Committee works to encourage innovative, truly home-grown efforts to make our neighborhoods a better place,” Pheffer-Amato said. “In South Queens, of all communities, I expect many more smart, homegrown ideas to come out of the woodwork. A group like the Citizens Committee is exactly what we need to make our neighborhoods flourish. I’m excited to host an opportunity to find out

how to apply for a grant!” According to their website, the Citizens Committee has undertaken “four decades of reinventing New York City neighborhoods through resident-led initiative and engagement.” In order to receive a Citizens Committee grant, organizations must meet several criteria, such as having no paid staff, not being for-profit, and operating on a budget of less than $40,000 per year. Organizations do not have to have 501(c)(3) nonprofit certification. Grants are limited to groups, not individuals; grants cannot be used for partisan purposes, for capital expenses, for AV equipment (though the Citizens Committee also runs an Equipment Share for grantees), or for salaries (though they can stipend). Rockaway residents, Opal Young and Guy Latronico, though legally blind, refused to let their lack of sight define their lives, and with the help of nonprofit organization, Alphapointe, they are both sparkling beacons of light, reflecting how unexpected obstacles can only made you stronger and more resilient. Young, who resides with her husband in Rockaway Beach, moved to the peninsula from the island of Jamaica in 1985. She graduated from Beach Channel High School and then attended York College in Jamaica, Queens, where she graduated with a degree in psychology. Her passion to help others led her into social work, where she initially worked with children in foster care. In 2004, Young learned that she had developed Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a condition which causes the cells on the retina to deteriorate over time. RP usually starts with a loss of night vision, followed by tunnel vision, and for some, like Young, can eventually can end in blindness. Young says her loss of vision was gradual. “In 2005, I had surgery on my left eye for macular degeneration, which oftentimes causes cataracts, and after the surgery, I lost instant vision in that eye,” she said. In 2006, Young started working as a case manager securing housing for the mentally ill and homeless at Brooklyn-based nonprofit organization, Cambia. Then in 2013, Young found that her one seeing eye was also starting to fail. “All of a sudden, I wasn’t able to recognize faces. I began relying on discerning voices and touch. Initially, I tried to hide it from my job, but with a caseload of 30 people, and having to fill out detailed paperwork for each case, it all became too much. I reported to my supervisors that my vision was decreasing, and that I desperately needed some reasonable accommodations to get my work done. I was in the

middle of losing my vision, but kept fighting to keep my job,” Young said. In August 2013, just less than a year after Hurricane Sandy, Young was terminated from her job. “I was basically forced out with the claim of low job performance. Forget the mental anguish of going totally blind, here I am now without a glimmer of hope that I could still work in the field that I loved. Initially, they gave me 30 days notice, but within two weeks, I was told to leave. They didn’t even give me the opportunity to walk out with some dignity. “However, I witnessed the destruction Sandy wreaked on our community. Sandy really was a lesson on how unexpected challenges and obstacles only makes us stronger, and Rockaway is a true reflection of that. So in a way, witnessing Rockaway resurrect, inspired me to keep on fighting and never give up,” Young said. Young then discovered Alphapointe, and for the last six months has been gainfully employed in their plastics division, and couldn’t be happier. Alphapointe is a non-profit organization that since 1911, has served the blind and visually impaired. Headquartered in Kansas City, it’s the third largest single employer of visually-impaired individuals in the U.S., employing over 400 people in nine locations in four states, including their main operations in Kansas City, Missouri and their new facility in Richmond Hill, Queens. In 2014, the nonprofit, merged with NYC Industries for the Blind, and is the largest employer of visually-impaired individuals in NYC. According to the National Federation of the Blind, an estimated one million Americans are legally blind, meaning that their corrected vision is no better than 20/200, and the unemployment rate is a dire 70 percent. Blindness or vision problems are among the top 10 disabilities among adults aged 18 years and older. Guy Latronico has been working at Alphapointe since 2008. Continued on page 13

After years working as a manager for retail giants such as Sears and Staples, he suddenly developed macular degeneration in his eyes, and had to leave his job. He discovered Alphapointe on a radio commercial, applied, and was first hired to sew, then was promoted to quality control specialist, and today is the supervisor of the brush and broom department. “I did not know how to sew, but I was determined to learn. I wanted the job, and here I am today, a supervisor. Alphapointe has really been a savior, not just for me, but all my co-workers. Just because we are blind, doesn’t mean we aren’t dedicated and talented workers,” Latronico said. Anthony Luisi, Alphapointe’s director of development, said that the organization prides itself on not just offering jobs, but other opportunities for the visually-impaired to be productive. “Not only do we provide jobs at Alphapointe’s various work di-

Alphapointe’s NYC location was first located in Borough Park, Brooklyn, but due to rent increases, they relocated to their 38,000-square-foot facility in Richmond Hill, Queens, where approximately 200 people are employed, of which 130 people are visually-impaired. Luisi said, “Through gentrification of the Brooklyn neighborhood, our rent skyrocketed! However, finding this location in Richmond Hill was a blessing. The community has been so embracing, and people have even stopped in, asking how they could volunteer. Imagine, the community’s wonderment when they see scores of blind people happily walking with their canes to the building. They surely made a statement that, ‘Yes, we are blind, but like you, take public transport to go to a job, where we are productive and learn something new every day.’”

Clay Berry, Alphapointe’s director of education and rehabilitation, stated that disabled people want and love to work. “There’s data that shows disabled people are the most dependable, when it comes to reporting to work, and many employers are increasingly beginning to see that. They don’t make their disability an excuse, but an incentive to come to work.” Berry said. Unbeknownst to Young, Luisi said they are already seeing her in a supervisory role. “Opal has only been here six months, but we already see her potential to soar,” Luisi exclaimed. For Young, her new opportunity at Alphapointe has lifted her up in more ways than one. “Though there are times that I start to complain, ‘Why me?’ — blessings keep coming my way. I love the camaraderie with my co-workers. We joke around, ‘What are you blind? Can’t you see what you’re doing?’ It’s great! And I joined the gym. I feel good about myself. No excuses!” Young said.

Put Christmas Back in Christmas Dear Editor: Like my fellow Marine from Broad Channel, Peter Mahon, I too have become greatly disturbed, dismayed, outraged and upset over the complete absence of the word, "Christmas," and/ or the term, "Merry Christmas" from today's lexicon! Whether omitted from secular advertising, event announcements or sometimes even religious Christian goods and announcements, it is truly outrageous. The PC crowd ties themselves into knots to avoid at any cost the use of the verboten word, "Christmas." Beach 116th Brightens Up Spirits were merry and bright at the Beach 116th Street Christmas Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 1. Despite some light rain later in the night, a large crowd came out to enjoy singing by PS 114 and Channel View students, hot chocolate and goodies, and even a visit from Santa Claus. Father Bill of St. Francis de Sales led a prayer before the tree, donated by Mazzone Hardware, was lit for the season and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz sang before Santa arrived to take pictures with local children. This event was made possible by Assembly District Leader Lew Simon, Liz Hanna, Rockawaves DJs and others.

Kids Become Holiday Architects at RCA Gingerbread House Event The holiday season is in full swing! On Saturday, November 24, the Rockaway Civic Association got into the spirit by hosting its annual Gingerbread and Chanukah House event. Members from the Rockaway Civic and community members were welcome to participate in this festive event that included making and decorating gingerbread houses for the holidays. From gumdrops to peppermints and even M&M’s, plus frosting to hold it all together, the participating kids and their families had plenty to work with

to make their creations unique. Plus participants got to enjoy coffee, hot chocolate and ring dings while working hard on their houses. The Rockaway Civic Association would like to offer a special thanks to the Knights of Columbus for allowing them to host this event in their hall. According to the RCA, “A good time was had by all. On Friday, November 30, the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center held a “Celebration of Life” to commemorate World AIDS Day. Many patients and employees gathered in the lobby to hear a motivational speaker provided by Merck Pharmaceuticals. “I have been HIV positive for 28 years,” speaker Michelle Lopez said. “Since my diagnosis, I have devoted myself to HIV/ AIDS outreach to share my experiences and knowledge - how you can contract it, treat it and successfully live life with it. I have taken charge of my life and I hope to inspire others to do the same. There have been many positive changes during recent years both in how the disease is

medically treated and how society perceives those with the disease.” This year’s World AIDS Day theme is “Know Your Status” and Northwell Health provided a van for free HIV/AIDS testing in addition to the free testing services provided daily at the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center. “Knowledge, emotional support and comprehensive medical treatment are critically important to our patients who are dealing with HIV/AIDS and we have a staff who is very dedicated to that mission,” said Dr. Marjorie J. One-Sided Hearing Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) causes about 4,000 cases each year of sudden, one-sided hearing loss. Along with the hearing loss, a sense of fullness in the affected ear is common, as is tinnitus, or ringing in the ear, and vertigo. In more than 90 percent of these cases, a cause for the hearing loss is never found and only about one-third of these patients will spontaneously recover hearing. Most people with SSNHL will initially see their primary care physician, not an ENT physician. The primary care physician must quickly diagnose the condition and refer the

patient to an ENT specialist as SSNHL is considered an otolaryngolic emergency. Most literature has found that recovery of hearing is more likely the faster treatment begins. Examination of the affected ear is usually normal. Examination of the ear is necessary to ensure that other conditions that can cause hearing loss are eliminated. These other conditions include impacted cerumen (ear wax plug) and ear infections. In addition to an ear exam, examination with a tuning fork is also done. This is because humans can hear sounds through the air and through bone - this is called

bone conduction (hearing your heartbeat is a form of bone conduction). When a vibrating tuning fork is placed on the top of the head, someone with normal hearing will hear the tone on both sides. Someone with SSNHL will only hear it on the unaffected side. Imaging studies like MRI scanning are not indicated as a growth or tumor like an acoustic neuroma (growth on the acoustic nerve), or any other brain abnormality or tumor, may cause gradual hearing loss but not sudden hearing loss. In SSNHL the hearing loss is very sudden, as in a matter of seconds the hearing on the affected side goes from normal to zero. As mentioned previously, SSNHL is an ENT emergency. The primary care physician, who is usually the first physician to see someone with this condition, must begin a course of oral corticosteroids (i.e. prednisone) after confirming that the ear examination is normal. Quick referral to an ENT specialist and initiation of steroid treatment

are imperative even though the cause of the hearing loss is unknown. The patient’s description of sudden one-sided hearing loss, ear fullness, tinnitus and vertigo along with a negative ear exam and loss of bone conduction on the affected side are enough to make the diagnosis of SSNHL likely. Medical literature is clear that hearing recovery is more likely the sooner the steroids are started. While cause of SSNHL is unknown, the result of whatever the cause is, is that the acoustic nerve suddenly shuts down. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

COMMON GROUND In the diversity that seems to be at the forefront these days, I find it important to speak about a common ground that could be unifying through the diversity. The phrase “common ground” resonated with me during a recent conversation with a yogini (a yogini is a term nowadays for a female who practices yoga). She was upset about the extremes of things and why people have to be so adamantly extreme. “Where is the common ground?” she asked. I often thought about a thread that binds us as human

beings, as living beings. What is it? What is the thread that binds us? I come to understand that it is life itself. Not the mind, not intelligence, not religious, social, political affiliation, but the fact that we are living. If we look at it that way, we would greatly respect every single human being on our planet, every single animal on our planet, every single plant and organism on our planet. And respecting to me means a certain amount of understanding. With that understanding we can let go of the criticism and start talking

about solutions—moving forward. Thinking about and finding the common ground in our families, our social lives, our spiritual practices or religions, our politics. This is what has been called “diplomacy.” Nowadays, we witness the breakdown of common decency, the value of life itself, the respect for all that is living, the understanding of what is important in life. I am saddened by some people’s dismissal of atrocities. And I wonder, “Where do we go from here?” “Don’t people care?” The answer does not lie in the mind and intelligence. The way to get people to care is through the common ground of life—the heartspace that brings us together in commonality at birth, celebrations through life and death. During this annual season of light, I invite you to reflect on the teachings of the Dalai Lama, who puts in perspective how to live simply in peace and harmony. Simply is the key word for me as it seems as if everything is so complicat-

Page 27 ed on a daily basis. Maybe the answer is to get down to basics. Love. Respect. Kindness. Compassion. Understanding. Generosity. Selflessness. Empathy. Happiness. Joy. Peace… and finding a way to deal with and dissolve anger and hatred in our world. As hard as it may be sometimes, I am extending the intention of light to all—even those who greatly differ and in my view undermine our basic human existence—so that all can come together in peace and harmony. May the thread that binds us bring an elevated understanding that we are all one, here on this earth for a short time and we have in common the need to do great things. “To do great things” means doing great for the sustenance of human, animal and plant life, and doing great to live peacefully and lovingly. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Elf on the Shelf: Pro or Con? It is that time of year again where we will all be subjected to the crazy elf pictures, when many of our social media friends try to outdo one another with their elaborate poses and shenanigans. For those of you like me, who either have older children or no children at all, the Elf on the Shelf is a book that was published in 2005 by the genius mother-daughter team of Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell. They are paired

with Chanda’s twin sister, Christa Pitts, who is the coCEO with Chanda. Chanda is a former English teacher who co-wrote the book with her mom. The pair wrote the book based on the family’s tradition, about a toy elf that monitors the children’s behavior and reports back to the North Pole each night. The book was self-published by the trio and at first was not a hit. What prompted part of the madness was actress Jennifer

Garner being photographed with the book and then The Today Show featuring it on a segment. The books, which retail for $29.95 and come with the toy elf, have since made millions. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, they have sold more than 13 million books since 2005. There has also been a CBS special that has aired twice and has had more than ten million viewers. So what is the controversy? Some people hate it, some people love it. Here are some quotes I gathered this morning while writing the column: “Yes I do it, but she is still fresh.” One teacher explained that the year she did the Elf on the Shelf with her kindergarten classroom and her exact quote was, “It was magical. Everyone cooperated, followed rules, best month ever.” Other quotes were: "Stupidest thing ever invented.” “Never did it. I am sure I have caused deep holiday issues for my kids.” (One of my favorites!).

The Rockaway Times I did not know that a new thing was the Elf to have clothes and change the clothes. One busy mom (who does not do the Elf YET), of two children, ages three and six months, said, “It will be a hot day at the North Pole before I start changing an elf ’s clothes. Sometimes I don’t have time to change my own!!!” So the comments were a mixture of it becomes stressful and if you do not move the Elf, there are some tears in the mornings. However, many parents had good excuses like the Elf stays in one spot because it is the best seat in the house. Other parents said it helps with the older kids who may not believe anymore; they get into it and help, so their younger siblings can enjoy. So it seems the good outweighs the bad. But please stop posting. We get it : you love your kids and want everyone to see you have an elf. Have a great week everyone.

Firehouse Could Use Some Heroes

The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department Firehouse could use a lift. The Broad Channel Vollies are still awaiting the building of a brand new resilient firehouse, a project which is currently out to bid, but the current, 110-year-old building was in need of a desperate fix-up, so last month, volunteers came out to help repair the first floor. Yet more needs to be done. The firehouse is seeking skilled tradesmen to volunteer to help with the repairs or those who can help solicit donations of materials that are needed. If you can help in either of these manners,

reach out to Commissioner Dan McIntyre at 347-678-5857. “The department’s membership has been spread extremely thin during this renovation and the department’s equipment and apparatus has had to be stored off-site, making it next to impossible for the members to both perform renovations and respond to emergencies and training classes,” a notice from the firehouse said in the recent Broad Channel Civic Association newsletter. “We need people to join who live in Broad Channel! There is no more simple way to put it. We can't survive without you.”

The Arverne Hotel Casino offered bowling, billiards, 100 (6x5) bathrooms, verandas on three sides of the building, tennis courts, massages, dining and drinking and, of course, gambling. The most practiced behavior pattern for the one-day traveler was to swim on the beach, bathe, relax, eat, drink, play and gamble. The ol' time locals know, back in the 1980s, this idea would have launched a promising revival for the Rockaways. Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev Sr. (1933-2018).

Slice 1/2 inch slices and serve with pasta or polenta. Keep in mind it shrinks quite a bit while cooking!

Rustwoods Debuts Consortium of Music By Kami-Leigh Agard

Guess what’s poppin’ starting this weekend, and for the duration of Rockaway’s oh-soloathed, but for some — ohso-needed winter season — at Rustwoods General Store and Gallery? The in-the-cut Boulevard spot, known for pumping out great music and art exhibits, located in back of Whit’s End, is debuting the Rustwoods Consortium of Music (RCM). From hip hop to jazz, blues, bebop, reggae, and more — under the tutelage of Rustwoods’ proprietor, Mikal Jessie Hameed; the local everythingmusic-meister, Mike Severino; and of course, Whitney Aycock of Whit’s End — get ready locals, because an old-school Rockaway speakeasy is coming to town. Hameed said RCM is the next chapter for Rustwoods. “This summer was great. We had a richly diverse menu of music and art exhibits. Some of the artists, like BEX, who debuted here, are now sharing their work, not just at other galleries in NYC, but nationwide. Geoff Rawling and Nigel Scott, both already internationally-known, showed their work here, and people were blown away. As a fellow artist myself, my dream was for Rustwoods to be a communal space to showcase Rockaway’s tremendously talented creatives,” Hameed said. However, like many proprietors of event spaces, not to mention food and drink establishments in Rockaway, the winter is a tough season. But, Hameed saw that as an opportunity to further explore creative avenues. “The winter is tough for all of us, however, I thought it was the perfect time to give my idea for RCM room to evolve. I was inspired by friends who wanted a venue to not just play music, but to teach others. Folks who frequented here, loved our diverse music scene, but kept expressing that they too, wanted to learn how to play an instrument. Even myself, hosting so many bands, I realized that we needed a backline (meaning

the sound systems and musical instruments needed for a great sound). That was something I had to learn, and also DJ-ing. These cats that came out to DJ, didn’t just play a track, but were spinning vinyl, which is an art, and I too, want to learn that. Mike Severino, with more than 20 years of experience as a professional drummer/ drum instructor, performing with Grammy-award winning artists, and playing in many bands locally, such as Ancient Jazz Quartet, showing expertise in probably almost every musical instrument, was more than ecstatic to get on board with RCM. According to Severino, he loves Rustwoods’ creative scene and was ecstatic when Hameed approached him about being RCM’s Head of Black Music. “I am obvi-

ously passionate about music. Rustwoods allowed myself and others, not just to showcase our work and fervor for music, but to inspire others to learn. In this role with RCM, I get the opportunity to give music lessons to anyone interested in learning various instruments. From drums, piano, guitar, and even DJ-ing— folks are welcome to come and learn. I’m just so happy to impart my knowledge and passion for musical expression to others, and of course, there will be other artists teaching. Besides jazz and blues, interested students will be able to learn to play other genres of music, such as reggae, ska, soca, rhythm and blues, and more! Whatever your taste, we are here to help you on your musical artistic journey,” Severino said.

And hip-hop heads, starting this Friday, December 7 at 8 p.m., RCM is launching its Hip Hop Karaoke Fridays. If you think you are lyricist with mad skills to spit out some offthe-hook rhymes, enter their weekly competition, where you’ll get a chance to win the accolade of “Rustwoods Hip Hop Karaoke Champion of the Week,” and walk away with not just a certificate, but much appreciated rewards — none other than a Biggie Smalls Crown and a pot full of money. Admission to enter the contest is $20, and if you just want to spectate, entry is $5. Hameed said after the weekly preliminaries, there will semi-finals, and then the grand final, where the pot will be even heavier with your favorite Benjamins! Saturday nights will also be a speakeasy setting for lovers of jazz, blues and R&B with Severino as the maestro. “Mikal comes from such a rich history, steeped with legendary performers. For example, the legendary jazz drummer, Billy Higgins, was his godfather. I just want to see all kinds of talents filling up Rustwoods. It’s going to be a cozy setting, filled with quality music. This is going to be a venue for all ages. All you need to come with is an appetite for good music,” Severino said. And speaking about appetites, Whit’s End, will be catering a special menu, which of course, never disappoints. This Saturday, December 8, the Nick Balaban trio will be playing from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. This is a BYOB event.
