Habitat for Humanity Seeks Holiday Volunteers By Katie McFadden
Things still aren’t back to normal after Sandy and as we celebrate the holiday season, some are still not back in their homes, but Habitat for Humanity of Westchester is continuing to do what they can to change that. Volunteer groups are coming from near and far to help Breezy Point and Rockaway residents get back home, and now is the perfect time to consider lending a helping hand. “We are blessed this holiday time for college and high school students taking time out of their winter break to help the Rockaways rebuild,” Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Westchester, Jim Killoran said. With a donation from the New York Irish Center, Habitat for Humanity was able to give out 500 gifts to local children, impacted by Sandy. In the past few weeks, Habitat for Humanity has seen many volunteer groups. Students from West Michigan University traveled 14 hours to help out. There have also been volunteers from more local schools like Huntington High School and Fordham University. This weekend, a group from Our Lady of Lourdes High School and some Habitat for Humanity college volunteers, will

continue to help. “The students have been insulating homes, painting and helping families getting closer to moving back,” Killoran said. Many of the volunteers have been staying at Christ Community Church in Breezy Point, where Habitat for Humanity of Westchester has been stationed since Sandy. “It’s still vital that volunteers become part of the victory of families
moving back in. Not only do the volunteers bring hope and joy, but they come in as a S.W.A.T. team knowing their work is lifesaving,” Killoran said. “We continue to need volunteers and support. We have worked on more than 900 homes, helped families get heat, rehabbed congregations, and companies. Volunteers contribute millions of dollars worth of labor and we are
still there!” The work isn’t over. With college students being on winter break for a few weeks and high school students having the week off, now is a great time to donate some time to the community. To find out more information about volunteering, email relief@habitatwc.org. “By Next Christmas, we want everyone back in their homes,” Killoran said.

Community Support For NYPD Some brought flowers. Others came for a candle light vigil. While the NYPD and The City were reeling from the news that two Police Officers were shot dead on Saturday, December 20th some locals
visited the 100th Precinct to show support for the men and women in blue. The police, including Captain Adelman, expressed gratitude for the heartfelt gestures.

Behind the Beard: Rockaway’s Santa By Katie McFadden
Each December, he dons the red suit, puts on his black boots, grooms his white beard and brings joy to the children of Rockaway as our very own Santa Claus. Behind the beard is a man who plays Santa all year round, whether wearing the suit or not, by doing good deeds everywhere he goes without dropping his name. Douglas MacLeod is Rockaway’s year-round Santa, but he sure does wear the suit well as he makes his way around the peninsula during the holidays. When he’s not taking community photos or performing secret selfless acts around town, MacLeod steps into the Santa suit. You’ve seen him at Joe Mure’s Little North Pole, the Rockaway Beach Civic Christmas Tree Lighting, police community council holiday parties, or maybe even walking the street. MacLeod has been one of Santa’s little helpers for more than 30 years. He has been in awe of Santa ever since he was young. “I remember as a kid, I used to go down to Germaine’s shop. I would stand there all day long watching Santa. I used to be amazed with him. I never thought that I would be a Santa myself. I just thought it was a good thing he was doing, even though he was prob-
ably getting paid for it,” MacLeod said. He started filling Santa’s shoes at family parties; a tradition that had been carried down for many generations. He then took to the streets of Manhattan, wearing the suit and spreading cheer to whoever passed by. In the early 1990’s, MacLeod became a Rockaway resident, and brought Santa with him. MacLeod says he would simply put on the suit and walk around the neighborhood and people would help him by giving him toys to give out. “People walk up and hand me a bag of toys or a toy and I’d give it to someone else. That happened numerous times. Also, organizations would give toys to me to give out, like the 100th precinct,” MacLeod said. “There isn’t one place where I go where I don’t think there will be a smile.” A big motivation for wearing the suit each year is to bring happiness to those around him. “It’s just to see the kids’ eyes. Just to see the joy on their face. Just to see that someone else can be happy. There were numerous times where I saw pain in somebody’s face, and just for 10 seconds, seeing Santa made them smile,” MacLeod said. Of course, being Santa comes with its own lumps of coal some-
times. MacLeod has been spit on, had his beard pulled and has even been peed on, including one time in which the incontinent lap guest was a diaper-wearing spider monkey. Luckily, he had a spare pair of Santa pants on hand. Santa also has to deal with the nonbelievers. “When someone says I’m not the real Santa, I tell them I’m one of Santa’s helpers and that Santa is really watching and there are elves in back of me that they can’t see,” MacLeod says. “One time a
kid responded, ‘you’re full of s***,’ MacLeod recalled, laughing at the memory. There are also memories that are harder on Santa. “Four years ago, a kid said to me ‘There’s nothing I really need, Santa, but my mom could use a coat,” MacLeod said. “That was pretty difficult for Santa.” He also has similar recent memories. “This year, a child said, ‘my momma’s boyfriend threw her clothes out the window.’ I can still hear that (continued to page 23)

‘Twas the night before Christmas, When all through The Rock People were still waiting at the ferry dock On the chimney they hung, hope and a prayer Hoping the mayor might actually care. But it was folly to think he might give a hoot His disdain for the rock you can hardly dispute Thoughts about the mayor I quickly dismissed And instead went to work on my Christmas list
We now offer catering I didn’t want much, not gloves nor a tie But something was missing, something awry The list stayed empty as I went to bed Visions of what should be danced in my head And then out on the street there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutter, and threw up the sash. There was a little old fellow, in red he was dressed The look on his face said he was more than distressed

His sack full of toys fell at his feet Then said in despair, I might need a whiskey neat. It’s been another year of a lot of talk For crying out loud, where’s the boardwalk?! Now I’ve gotta go back to the dreary North Pole And get a supply of stocking coal
Oh Santa, oh Santa, I know what you mean The effort we see is kind of obscene Bring your coal for Skanska and Parks and EDC too And grant us our wish for a real work crew His eyes gave a twinkle as he jumped on his sleigh Rockaway, Rockaway why do you stay? Merry Christmas. ***** A good idea was suggested by Charles Cheswick of Breezy Point: The MTA should make a public announcement (and make it policy) that the Gil Hodges / Marine Park bridge will not be raised for marine traffic within a 48 hour period, prior to an oncoming hurricane. In a letter to elected officials and others, he said ”Due to the many recent mechanical failures resulting in closures of this bridge, this restriction will ease the minds of Rockaway residents when preparing to evacuate the peninsula and prevent a possible massive traffic jam if the bridge is closed during that time.” ***** So how long do you usually take to cook a special holiday meal for your family? Del Monte, the food company, wanted to know and conducted a survey (there’s a survey for everything— we wonder if they used Sandy relief money). The company determined
Page 7
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2014
that Mississippi people spend more time preparing holiday meals than any other U.S. state. The survey did not mention that Mississippi leads the U.S. in obesity as well. Compared to other states in meal preparation time, New York came in 11th place. ***** Ray Haws and John Burke, a local firefighter and lead singer in the popular band, Wine With Sue, contacted The Rockaway Times about urging people to show their support for the NYPD. Burke said people put flowers at the firehouse every 9/11 and it means a lot and a similar gesture would be good for the local police. “They (the NYPD) need to realize how much this town needs and loves them.” We put the request on our Facebook page and it reached more than 17,000 people, getting more than 200 shares. For you nonFacebookers – that means it got a lot of attention. ***** An online petition calling for the res-
10
ignation of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio sprung up the day the two police officers were killed. More than 50,000 people had signed it within the first 24 hours. The petition was made available on MoveOn.org a group organized to “ win campaigns for progressive change.” Atop the petition page there was a disclaimer: MoveOn volunteers reviewed this petition and determined that it either may not reflect MoveOn members’ progressive values, or that MoveOn members may disagree about whether to support this petition. MoveOn will not promote the petition beyond hosting it on our site. ***** Some indy filmmakers are at work trying to get a film made. The movie, about surfing, to be shot in Rockaway Beach, is called 6ft Above the Sea Level. If you want to donate to help KC Crespo make her film (also her thesis) check out Indigogo.com or the film’s Facebook page. ***** Look at the bright side. There’s more sunlight on the way. The winter solstice was Sunday, December 21st, the shortest day and longest night of the year. ***** One way to save calories. Order a Big Mac with a bite taken out of it. Seems a customer at the McDonalds on Beach 92nd Street got a surprise
when she opened her Big Mac container only to find the burger had human-sized bite taken from it. She wasn’t loving it. ***** Father James Dunne, longtime and much-loved pastor of St. Camillus, died last week. His funeral was Monday. ***** On Monday, it looked they were building a moat on the beach at 118th Street. Irv Gordon sent us pictures and a description: The old concrete structures used to support the old boardwalk were being removed leaving a large trench where the concrete structures were previously located. In the process, a water main was punctured and water started to fill the trench. (Hey, at least there was a work crew! Can’t say that for most of the boardwalk). ***** Think you got shortchanged by flood insurance? There’s a group collecting names of people who think they might have been victims of insurance fraud. It has already been reported that some engineers were handing in falsified reports so that insurers could deny claims. Some think it’s quite widespread and the group seeks to prove it. Send an email to FightNFIPfraud@ gmail.com for information on how to join this group.

Pipeline Truth
Dear Editor: Re John Cori’s column (12/18, Offshore Rigged) This is a somewhat misleading article and that is because the activists mentioned are not good sources for information. Mr. Cori was at the draft EIS hearing on the Rockaway Lateral Pipeline project where the likely connection between the Rockaway project and Port Ambrose was brought up and it was not brought up by the activists holding this “informational” meeting. For longer than a year and half, a variety of news outlets and Federal agencies were asked about whether Port Ambrose could be built without the Rockaway lateral Project. Even the company that wanted to build the prior LNG project proposed for offshore dubbed “insanity island” filed paperwork under the Rockaway docket. That also was brought up at the draft EIS hearing on the Rockaway project as well as multiple times in the docket and to MarAd as well. The “true plan” is that the Port Ambrose project is an LNG import/ delivery project as described in every piece of paperwork filed on it for the last two years. Karen Orlando

Dear Editor By and large, I see people with their minds and hearts clouded by anger who just want to tear down the half of the world they don’t like and burn it. And to those people, I want to say that none of you can see the other side of the argument, and cherry-picked news articles don’t prove a point, but they do prove how much self-satisfaction you get from validating your own opinion while vilifying any dissent. People who support cops are just worried for their friends and family who they know work tirelessly to do good. People who support the protestors just want fair, accountable policing. And members of both sides mercilessly discredit and attack the other side as a whole, sheerly out of bitterness. That hatred inside you is never going to get you any kind of solution. You’ll get that cheap high from feeling superior as you insult strangers on the internet with no repercussions, but that’s about it. People are going to keep getting killed, and rather than maturely accept that any death is upsetting and possibly avoidable, you’re going to pick martyrs for your side, call the other side cowards, call for the destruction of your opposition, and just perpetuate the same stupid human cycle of hatred that divides us, and makes it so easy for the misguided and cruel murderers who commit these violent crimes to continue visiting pain and bloodshed on society. We are Cain, and we are Able, and we don’t seem to care that this has played out a thousand times before. Mark Flynn

The Broken Window At City Hall Mayor de Blasio risks losing more than the Police Department support. In the late 1980s and early 1990s it was difficult to come across someone who hadn’t been a crime victim. Cars were stolen or broken into; purse and chain snatching was a regular occurrence. Worst of all, two thousand homicides were recorded annually. In many neighborhoods steel bars were installed on first and even second floor windows. New York was unsafe. For many reasons, crime began to abate. More police, stronger economic conditions, technology, and an aging population were among the factors that lead to a decrease in criminal activity. Often overlooked was the shift in the mindset of everyday citizens. People decided that they’d had enough. If they saw something, they said something. Citizens helped cops do their jobs which now included policing with an eye on “broken windows.” The “broken windows” theory
about crime is that small, ignored signs can lead to greater criminal activity: a broken window not fixed leads to more broken windows and more vandalism. The public began calling in “broken windows.” A vigilant and fed up citizenry and an engaged police department helped turn New York around. New York became the safest big city in the country. Yes, there were multiple reasons why crime declined but that shouldn’t diminish the partnership efforts of the police and regular New Yorkers. We now have a Mayor who sends mixed messages about the police. With the horrific murder of the two officers this week, the rift between the Mayor and the NYPD is deep. The citizenry is torn, too. No sane person wants cops to be targets. But peaceful protests should be allowed. A delicate balance is required. Unfortunately, we fear there might be a broken window at City Hall.

their children about the existence of Santa Claus...” as the children will inevitably come to know the truth as they grow up either from older siblings or friends. The psychologist warned that upon learning the truth, the child “...might feel betrayed and begin to wonder about other lies his or her parents may have told.” What a bunch of malarkey! Have any of you ever known of a child requiring therapy upon ultimately discovering the secret of Santa Claus? Of course not! Truth be told I have always been of the opinion that the field of psychology is overly populated by individuals who could not cut it in medical school! Growing up in the 1950’s we lived in an apartment in the quaint Irish Village of Woodside, Queens. Each December a real Christmas tree was set up and decorated in our small living room and every Christmas morning there were gifts under the tree from Santa. We didn’t have a fireplace so the question naturally arose as to how Santa got in the apartment each year. Mom deftly fielded the question by responding, “Jesus, are you really that daft? If he can get down a chimney, how hard do you think it is for him to come through a window or a door?” Made perfect sense to me at the time. Another benefit of growing up in the 50’s was that we didn’t have to deal with the question of “How is Santa Claus able to be in all those shopping malls at the same time?” Back then malls, as we know them today, simply did not exist. When it was time to talk to Santa, we all went to Manhattan where, for some odd reason, Santa appar-

ently resided at Macy’s in Herald Square. It never dawned on me that we never visited Gimbels until well after New Years. I also knew that Santa was real because, even when I screwed up, my parents never squealed on me to Santa. One year my Mother was particularly livid with me. I forget what my offense was but it must have been a doozy! Nevertheless, on Christmas morning, there under the tree were my gifts from Santa. Later that day, Mom took me aside and said that although she had decided not to advise Santa of my misdeeds and have me placed on his “naughty” list she warned that she would “...beat the living daylights out of me and mail my lifeless body to Santa if I ever similarly offended again!” I really can’t quite remember when I finally lost the requisite childhood innocence that allows children to truly believe in Santa Claus. I once thought it might have been Christmas Eve, 1968, when I was at recruit training with the Marine Corps on Parris Island and our D.I. wouldn’t allow me to hang a stocking my family had sent me on the end of my bunk. But, lo and behold, on Christmas morning, the D.I. let us sleep late and didn’t scream, yell or throw things at us until well after breakfast. I concluded that even though he didn’t drop off any presents, Santa probably did stop by and speak to our D.I. to instill a little bit of the Christmas Spirit! Many years later, I was asked to “stand in” for Santa Claus and pay a visit to the school children of Broad Channel at P.S. 47. When I asked one young boy sitting on my lap if he had been good during the year, his eyes flew wide open and, after quickly glancing around the room, he looked down at the floor and nervously asked in a low voice, “Why, did my parents say something to you?” I responded by laughing long and hard and assured the lad that he had no reason to worry because he was on my good list. I guess what I am trying to say is that Santa Claus is truly the “final frontier” of childhood innocence and, as adults who all benefited from Santa’s magic as children, we should all strive to keep that magic alive during every Christmas season. If we can help Santa Claus make a child smile, help them forget the real world for even just a little while – then as far as I am concerned, that’s the real magic of Santa Claus. My sincere wishes to each and every one of you for a very Merry Christmas! Broad Channel - why would anyone want to live anywhere else? Contact info: email rtbetweenthebridges@gmail.com

2015 Almost Here – Ringing in the New Year Around Town By Katie McFadden
How will you be bringing in 2015? Some might risk the cold and the crowds in Times Square, while some might spend time with family or friends at a home gathering, but for those looking to go somewhere locally, Rockaway’s restaurant and bar scene will be in full swing on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Whether you want to participate in the countdown on New Year’s Eve or you’re saving your shenanigans for New Year’s Day, local businesses are offering it all. Some restaurants will be offering full-fledged parties on New Year’s Eve. Dalton’s will be holdings its annual New Year’s Eve Gala starting at 9 p.m. on December 31. For $75 per person, Dalton’s guests will enjoy a DJ, a special fivecourse gourmet meal, full open bar, a champagne toast, party favors and more. “I think we’re great for the community and we’re the happiest place on earth,” staff member, John Xanthos said. “Come have fun with us.” Reservations are recommended for those interested in Dalton’s Gala. “Last year, we were totally booked,” Xanthos said. After cleaning up from the late-night celebrations, Dalton’s will have a New Year’s Day brunch featuring live music and a $10 open bar with your meal. There will also be happy hour specials from 2 to 6 p.m. Thai Rock will be holding its own New Year’s Eve bash starting at 10 p.m. For $50 in advance, or $60 at the door, Thai Rock guests will be treated to live music by the Motown-style band, Killer Joe’s Lido Soul Quartet. Thai Rock will also be serving all you can eat Thai treats. “A plethora of food will be going around. There will be all kinds of food from our menu,” owner Robert Kaskel said. There will be a midnight champagne toast, party favors going around and a cash bar. “If you want to ring in the new year with great music, great food, good people and a nice, warm environment, this is the place to be,” Kaskel said. Thai Rock will be operating as normal un-
til 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and will be open on New Year’s Day, when singer/songwriter James Tristan Redding will perform at 6:30 p.m. “If you want a low-key New Year’s Eve, we’re the place to be,” Katy Bree Grey, manager of the Bungalow Bar said. On New Year’s Eve, the Bungalow Bar will have a regular menu available and the fireplace will be on to create a “nice, cozy atmosphere,” Grey said. The real celebration will take place on New Year’s Day. For the first time ever, Bungalow Bar will be celebrating “Purple Day.” While many bars and restaurants stick with red or green, the Bungalow Bar will offer specials to those who wear purple in honor of Emily Hutton, an employee who passed away earlier this year. “Her favorite color was purple,” Grey said. “Emily’s spirit will be here on New Year’s Day and that will be our color for many years to come.” The day will feature brunch starting at 11:30 a.m. with a complimentary Bloody Mary or screwdriver and there will be drink specials and a regular menu available all day. On New Year’s Eve, Central Asian restaurant, Uma’s, will have a special New Year’s Eve menu in addition to its regular menu. According to Uma’s owner, Conrad Karl, “We’re going to have traditional craft Russian New Year’s Eve dishes,” starting at 6 p.m. Among the special menu items will be Chicken Kiev, Herring Salad, bellinis with caviar and roasted leg of lamb. The students of P.S. 253Q had a very special Christmas week at school. Through New York Cares and Bank of America, 534 students received presents that they wished for. The students of P.S. 253Q in Far Rockaway were able to take part in a holiday wish list letter writing campaign through New York Cares. In a partnership with Bank of America, all of the wishes were granted and the students received their gifts throughout the week. The staff of P.S. 253Q received the shipment of gifts on Tuesday, December 16, and just had a few days to sort them out between the many classes and students. The fourth and fifth grade classes received their gifts on Friday, while second and third grade got theirs on Monday and the Pre-K through first grade students received
theirs on Tuesday, December 23, following a Christmas recital. Each of the Pre-K through first grade students wore their holiday best and performed songs like “Jingle Bells,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Feliz Navidad,” “All I Want for Christmas is You” and a few numbers from the popular animated movie, “Frozen.” After they performed, Santa Claus arrived and the students were called by name to the stage, to meet Santa and to collect their wrapped gift. “These are gifts that were given in a generous manner,” Principal Phoebe Grant-Robinson announced to the parents that came to watch. “Let’s emphasize gratitude and continue to have our children practice this. That’s what we’re here for; generosity and gratitude.” New York Cares and P.S. 253Q have had an ongoing relationship since Sandy. The non-profit has sponsored many events with the school including back to school events, family nights, dinners, civic engagement seminars and more.
Beach Bonds There is always so much to thankful for at Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanzaa. For many this is a favorite time of year, celebrating with family and friends, a year coming to an end, a new year and a fresh start about to unfold. Gift giving, merriment and holiday cheer! But, lets all be honest. We can’t wait to get back on the beach ! Let’s face it, we are all here for the same reason! That amazing place just a block or two or three from each and everyone of us. Whether you love the beach or the bay, how can anyone not love living on our great peninsula? A few weeks back a fellow Rockaway peninsula resident, Edwin Williams, called me to talk about some ideas to make our peninsula a better place to live. We spoke about the opportunities to bring kids together and ideas which would make out little slice of heaven here on The Rock, even better. After our phone call I thought about what the best part of living on this great peninsulas was for me. My
conclusion was simple, the fact that Edwin would reach out to talk about ideas to make our very special place that much better. A simple phone call where he spoke of making our home a better place. We are fortunate to have amazingly wonderful people on The Peninsula and we are extremely fortunate to have an amazing device to help us stay united. That device is our beloved beach and soon to be reborn boardwalk! There are not many places on this earth that have an artery, as beautiful as ours, running through each and every neighborhood forming a natural bond of human activity, especially on those hot summer days! Our beaches and boardwalk have always been and will always be the great unifier which will bind our little slice of heaven through the sands of time! As for me, all I want for Christmas is my summer back, of course our boardwalk back. And, let’s not forget a little bit of that great Rockaway sunshine smiling down on all of us! Just can’t wait!

Participants will receive certificates in business management, nutrition, and early childhood development upon completion of the child care training program.
Recently, I needed help with many daily activities and for the first time, I felt gracious and grateful accepting all of the help that came my way. And it has been so abundant. I finally learned the lesson my father tried to get my mother to learn. I remember him telling me how he would urge my mother to accept the neighbor’s offer to pick up something at the store, even if she didn’t need anything, because it is important to receive as well as to give. Coming from a giving, giving family, I always felt that I didn’t want anyone to do anything for me, although I was always happy to give and to anticipate what someone might need. It felt uncomfortable to accept people going out of their way for me. Through cultivating an open heart by practicing yoga: focused breathing, doing postures and mindful concentration, this has fallen by the wayside. I do feel peaceful about accepting the kindnesses, food, shopping, gifts, etc. probably because I feel worthy, centered and closer to my own heart than ever before. And I am truly grateful. Could the heart be the center of our being? In the documentary “I AM”, Tom Shadyac, endeavors to prove, among other things, that the heart, not the brain, may be our primary organ of intelligence,

Receive with Grace & Gratitude i.e., it tells our brain what to do. Whether we believe this or not, it’s worth thinking about. Give some thought to when you are on the receiving end, whether it be a gift, fulfillment of a need or some random act of kindness. How do you feel? Do you experience that internal smile, that feeling of warmth? That is what it feels like to have an open heart and to accept the bountiful gifts around us. If you do not feel that, step on the heart-opening path – visualize actually stepping onto a path. Raise your shoulders up back and down allowing the chest to expand. Close your eyes and bring your awareness to the center of your heart space. You may want to place your hand on your heart and imagine the opening and warmth from within. Practice this frequently with a phrase that resonates within you. You are on your way to opening your heart, fulfilling your innermost part and receiving all of the gifts that abound. Receive the act of kindness without thinking about how you’re going to reciprocate for that moment, enjoy the gift of that person and you will feel more connected, you will know what it feels like to be at the other end of all that you give and you will gain a sense of humanity. Facts You Probably Don’t Need way to cocaine, which is why we always crave more. ☛ You’re more likely to get stung by a bee on a windy day than in any other weather. (Guess we’re easing pickings here in Rockawindy). ☛ Only 55 percent of all Americans know that the sun is a star. (The other 45 percent think Kim Kardashian is). ☛ And the highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Jim Carrey version. Who knew? ☛ Christmas is a great time to exercise. You will walk an average of five miles between the parking lot and stores, however, don’t let this give you a false sense of security, most people still gain those pesky Christmas pounds despite this.
Behind the Beard: Rockaway’s Santa (Continued from page 4) kid’s voice. I wish I knew who that boy was so I could help him. I really wish I knew. He disappeared into the crowd,” MacLeod said, holding back tears as he shared the memory. Like the case for most in Rockaway, Sandy didn’t spare Santa when she hit. Santa lost his suit in the trunk of his car when the peninsula was flooded. However, by chance, MacLeod bumped into a woman from a charity group based in Manhattan, who happened to mention that her group just bought a brand new Santa suit and they were looking for someone to fill it. “Santa was able to fulfill her group’s needs and when Santa came to help the kids after Sandy, in the parking lot of Waldbaums, he was wearing a new suit that year. It’s the same suit he has today,” MacLeod said. “This particular suit has been all over Rockaway. I can’t even recall all of the places I’ve been.” While volunteering his time for free, being Santa comes with its own rewards. “When I lay down in bed, especially in December, I just know that some little boy or girl got
something special. I always put that on the top of my list,” he said. MacLeod plans to continue his Santa duty for as long as he can. “I’ll continue to be Santa until I die. I think no matter where I am, no matter what I do, the month of December will be time for Santa,” he said. “If I was lying in a hospital bed at my worst, I would still think that Santa is there. I stopped believing in Santa at an early age, but to this day, I know Santa will be there.”
Fried Cabbage with Sausage By Sharon Feldman
This recipe is courtesy of Judy Hall, with a little twist from me. Here’s a low carb recipe for all of you! Makes about 8 servings. 1 stick butter 1 small head of cabbage, chopped (I like Savoy) 1 small sweet onion, chopped 1 pound smoked turkey sausage, sliced into round pieces 1 (15 ounce) can diced rotel tomatoes ( I use the rotel as it kicks it
up a notch) ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Melt butter in a large skillet. Add cabbage, onion, and cook on medium high for about 5 minutes, stirring to keep from sticking to the pan. Add remaining ingredients, cover and simmer 20-25 minutes. You can substitute any smoked sausage. You might also like to use a little hot chili sauce.

The Best for Last 2014 was a great year or a rough one, depending upon not only one’s out look on life, but other indices, such as finances, deaths in the family and definitely some of the horrific crimes that took place across the country and the fallout it brought. One thing I hope to leave behind in 2014 for the Rockaways is something that stings my heart sharply: neglect. It’s a silent killer and something that can level us all when we see it right before us and we don’t know why we’re treated in such a painful way. My grandmother was supremely astute at indifference, she could make anyone invisible and they knew it immediately, the next moment they would be clambering for their coat to leave. Problem for the Rockaways is we live here and don’t want to leave,
which makes the battle against the City so much harder when we see so many of our issues simply neglected or services we need, pulled away from us. But on Friday December 5th, something very cool happened. Melinda Katz, the Queens Borough President hosted a meeting between the NYC Parks Commissioners and the Rockaway Civics about all the open issues that are ongoing in the Park’s Department jurisdiction. This was to begin an open dialog and to see how these many issues could be dealt with in a timely fashion before the opening of the beach on Memorial Day. One of the great things that happened that day for Rockaway surfers is that the Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association got an invite to the table
by Noreen Ellis of the Rockaway Civic Association. We were asked to speak on how to amend Park’s Rules and Regulations along with the new “definitions” of surf craft, so we don’t come across another boogie board ban type of thing. Other suggestions we presented and seemed to be received in high regard, were putting posted signs on where the surf beaches are, posting of the surf craft definitions, rules and regulations and posting of surfing laws, such as not dropping in and paddling through a lineup. But one thing we recommended and I’m exceptionally pleased to announce is the request for two more legal surfing beaches for Rockaway. One area noted was the 60th Street jetty as this has amenities and also a near-by subway station. Another surf beach proposal is to have one “rotating” surf beach east of the 84th Street jetty to the 72nd Street jetty. This would be weekdays only and we suggested that it would be best for the lifeguards to determine which beach is too dangerous for swimmers so surfers can continue surfing past the 10 a.m. limit. Noreen Ellis made another great suggestion to have a boogie board only surf beach up around 108th Street and somewhere towards 116th Street. What Melinda Katz did is fantastic, opening a dialogue so even people like us can be heard and hope to exact a change that benefits a lot of us. While this column is skewed to surfing interests, it’s not to say we want these changes before other more important

MELINDA GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTING a selfie request issues, like the boardwalk and fortifying the peninsula. At the meeting those more important topics were addressed in their fullest and I’m happy to report that everyone seemed genuinely positive those needed changes will come. While we are scheduled to reconvene in January to further discuss those recommendations, I sincerely hope that you all will see these great suggestions pan out and that our voices were heard…and not neglected. We also want to cheer on Jill Weber who will be leaving the Park’s Dept. Jill has been instrumental in her tenure here at Rockaway, helping facilitate many things but also recognizing surfing and helping it grow, best of luck to you Jill!!!! Onwards and upward and have a great 2015! Oh…and when ever presented with a gaping open barrel… always PULL IN!!!!!!!!

If Words Could Heal This week is the most wonderful time of the year. But this past weekend was a tough one. Not only on two Police officers families, but the entire City of New York. We all bear the burden of such an event and I personally have a knot in my stomach. There is nothing anyone can say that may change the way these families feel at this time. But if Rafael Ramos or Wenjian Liu were given the opportunity to have a last word, what would they say? On December 9th, 13 year old Jaden Ramos paid tribute to his father for his 40th birthday. Rafael responded to his son, “you are the best.” A touching father and son exchange. Two weeks later, Jaden’s tribute to his now deceased father is only met by silence. We want to break that silence with all due respect. Our intention is not to put words in Officer Ramos’s mouth, we rather want to give some semblance of peace and comfort to a grieving family, one that this City is forever in its debt to. My Dearest Son Jaden, I am writing this letter you to you as I ascend to the Gates of Heaven. God has called me home. Our time together was cut short, I am sorry this was not my plan.

But I saw your post on Facebook. I know you are hurting right now, but bear with me as I have a few things I want to tell you before I go. You said to your friends, that you love me. I want to tell you son, that there is no measurement in this world for how much I have loved you. You are my endless pride and joy. I am so proud of you. After you say goodbye to me, at 13 years of age you are now a Man. And with becoming a Man, comes great responsibility. I thought that I would be around to guide you, although I am not here in person, my spirit will have to fill those shoes. Please know that I will always be with you and if you call, I will answer. I want you to remember this. Jaden, when I graduated from the Police Academy, I took an oath. I solemnly swore that I would protect New York City and the Constitution of the United States of America to the best of my ability. I received my badge and went to work with Honor. It wasn’t always easy, spending hours on my feet in Operation Impact in the blistering heat Summers to the bitter cold Winters. My schedule was not always the best and I may have missed some important days of yours, I was there all along son.
SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE ROCKAWAY TIMES ROCKAWAYTIMES.COM
I did this for us Jaden, so that I could provide a better future for us. I knew the risks of this job, and I proudly went to work every day. But you said in your post, “everyone says they hate cops.” I have to tell you Jaden, this is not true. For any one person to say that, there were countless others saying Thank You. People are entitled to their opinion Jaden, it does not mean we have to agree with it, but we respect it. I want you to remember this. You may ask why now, how could this happen, what happened? You may think I lost this fight for my life, that the bigger man won. Jaden, Officer Liu and I didn’t have a chance. We were experts with the best training in the world, but no matter how tough your dad was, I couldn’t stop the bullet from a coward in the manner from which it came. An ambush, he really didn’t give us a fair chance to fight. Just know, that I would give anything to change the circumstances if it meant I could come home to you again. You will encounter confrontation in life Jaden. The tough guy is the one that walks away. If absolutely necessary, fight the good fight Son, and Be Not Afraid. I am with you, I want you to remember this. Jaden, please honor your mother. If there is anyone that loves you more than I do, it is her. Do
what she says and always respect her. There will be hard times in the future, but she is your best friend and has only good intentions for you. You are the man of the house now and I want you to act accordingly. I want you to remember this. Jaden, please keep your focus on your education. You are a smart person and you will excel in life. Grades are important but it does not end there. Being a Man for others is more important. By taking this oath, I hope that I have proved that to you. Be kind to your fellow man, it’s nice to be important but more important to be nice. I want you to remember this. Jaden, though you lose a father today you gain thousands of fathers from my Brothers in Blue, they all know your name. The citizens of New York City are in your corner and they will know your name. You will make your mark in this world, and everyone will know your name. You will mourn my loss for the coming weeks, months, and years. Take solace in the fact that I am at peace. I’ve done my duty and move to an afterlife with honor, dignity and pride knowing you are my Son. I love you always. I want you to remember this. Your Loving Father, Rafael Ramos, NYPD (ret. 12/20/14)

Flea by the Sea to Come in January By Katie McFadden
Rockaway is getting a flea market. Arverne Flea By the Sea will kick off at 62-02 Beach Channel Drive on January 3, offering good bargains for shoppers and a new location for local vendors to sell their items. The new flea market is being brought to the area by a man named Joe S. “What I see in Arverne is that it’s up and coming, with all of the new stores and the YMCA and other businesses opening and with other flea markets closing recently, we needed a new location,” Joe said. “We’re bringing the vendors what they want and they’re getting a nice location by the beach.” The Valley Stream Flea Market closed at the of end October, after operating for 45 years, and vendors in the area are in need of a new location to sell their goods. Many local flea markets saw their final days in the past few decades, including the Aqueduct Racetrack flea market, which closed in 2011 to make room for Resorts World Casino. “Our flea market is the present and hopefully the future,” Joe S said. Joe promises the best deals on all sorts of goods. “We’ll have everything you can think of from A to Z, from used to new items. We’ll have clothes, perfume, food, electronics, just name it and we got it,” he
said. Some of the vendors on board so far include Rockaway locals and Joe says he’s received positive comments to far. “The feedback has been phenomenal, from vendors and shoppers.” Joe is expecting many of the shoppers to come from the Valley Stream area, since that local flea market has closed. “I think this will be a great thing for the Rockaways. Rockaway has needed this for years. After Sandy, a lot of stores didn’t reopen. This will bring the economy up and will be a good thing for the vendors that live here and the vendors from Long Island,” he said. Arverne Flea by the Sea will be located in a three acre area and vendors can occupy 10x20’ spots. Vendors can have tents, tables or little storefronts. The space is outdoors and opening hours may be subject to the weather. “Winter probably won’t be easy, but I think we’ll be okay,” Joe said. The flea market is expected to be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays and will run all year. Vendors who are interested in renting a spot can rent one for $40 a day or $700 for the month, through March. “It’s like a gift. Nobody charges that price alone. They usually charge around $60 or $80. The winter is rough, so I’m giving them a break, Joe said. To rent a spot, call Joe at (917) 500-0380.
