Shelter Fallout
120 HOMELESS HEADING TO BEACH 101 Rockaway Beach is reeling. St. Camillus Catholic Academy is closing and a homeless shelter is opening. At least that’s what is proposed, and residents and local elected officials vow to do what they can to stop the plan to house 120 homeless men at a warehouse located at 226 Beach 101st Street. The news, first reported online by The Wave, was confirmed by Jon Gaska of Community Board 14 who told The Rockaway Times that he had heard a rumor of a homeless shelter coming to the building and contacted the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) which, after a delay, confirmed the plans. According to DHS, the plans will involve nonprofit service provider, Black Vets for Social Justice, but it is not clear if any of the homeless individuals will be veterans. Online reaction was overwhelmingly negative and there was an immediate call to action by John Cori of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association. Cori will
be spearheading a candle/flashlight vigil against the proposal and is urging residents of all neighborhoods to join him this Friday, February 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Beach 101st Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. He encourages people to bring signs to display opposition. The warehouse at 226 Beach 101st Street, the long-ago home of Roxbury Mills, is not currently suitable for any sort of residency and will have to be overhauled to allow for living space. According
to the Buildings Department website, no permits or applications for such renovations have yet been filed. The only active permit is for plywood sidewalk fencing, an “Alteration Type 3,” which states: “No change in use, occupancy.” The zoning, R5D, however, does allow for a wide variety of housing. The building was purchased by Yosef Rabinowitz (sometimes identified as Joseph Rabinowitz or JoJo Rabinowitz) of 175 Blake Ave, Brooklyn for a little over $3 million in April 2018.
The Rockaway Times called Rabinowitz at his business, Liberty One Group, but did not receive a return call by press time. Supportive housing seems to be part of the Rabinowitz portfolio. According to the website, The Real Deal, in 2017, Rabinowitz bought a two-story medical facility in Flatbush for $11.75 million, which is “used for housing for seniors with mental illness.” The same source said Rabinowitz bought a drug and alcohol rehab center in Prospect Heights headquarters for $10.5 million. Various online sources list Rabinowitz as an owner or co-owner of the Liberty One Group, a real estate investment company. In October 2018, protesters lined up in front of a proposed shelter in College Point. That building at 127-03 20th Avenue, was earmarked to be a shelter by the DHS. That building is owned by Liberty One Group. Continued on page 3

SHELTER FALLOUT
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2019
Continued from Page 2
Following the announcement of Cori’s planned vigil, elected officials weighed in on the shelter proposal. City Councilman Eric Ulrich, who is running for Public Advocate, said, “I am deeply disturbed by Mayor de Blasio’s plan to bring a large-scale homeless shelter to Rockaway Park. The Peninsula is already inundated with nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and temporary shelters. The proposed plan is unacceptable, and I pledge to fight it tooth and nail!” Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said, “The proposed homeless shelter on 101st Street is a completely misguided and irresponsible plan. Our families have been through so much to rebuild our neighborhoods from the effects of Hurricanes Irene and Sandy and still are not whole. We do not need additional hurdles.” State Senator Joe Addabbo stated concerns about its size and proposed location. “I believe one major issue is the size of this proposed shelter, as well as its prox-
imity to the schools within the area. I have always advocated for much smaller shelters that better assist the homeless and acclimate better within a community.” Scholars’ Academy is just three short blocks away from the planned shelter. A new business, Sorrentino’s Meats, just around the corner is set to open soon. The Rockaway Times reached out to the DHS for confirmation of the news. Arianna Fishman of DHS not only confirmed, but further explained the implementation of the shelter, saying, “Homeless New Yorkers come from every community across the
five boroughs, so we need every community to come together to address homelessness. As we implement our borough-based approach, we are ending the use of all cluster sites and commercial hotel facilities citywide and distributing new high-quality facilities more equitably across the five boroughs to give homeless New Yorkers the opportunity to be sheltered in their home borough, closer to their support networks and communities they last called home as they stabilize their lives. This location will be the first of its kind in this Community District, offering 120 individuals
Page 3 experiencing homelessness the opportunity to get back on their feet closer to their anchors of life. Working together with neighbors and not-for-profit service provider Black Vets for Social Justice, we’re confident that these families will be warmly welcomed— and through collaborative support and compassion, we will make this the best experience it can be for these individuals as they get back on their feet.” It’s not unusual for communities anywhere to resist new shelters, but Rockaway residents can point to actual statistics showing that the peninsula is already overburdened. The NYU Furman Center annually publishes The State of New York City’s Housing and Neighborhoods report, which provides data and analysis about housing, land use, demographics, and quality of life for each borough. According to the report, Rockaway has a disproportionate number of “severely rent-burdened households,” adult and nursing homes, and the highest unemployment rate in the borough.

BOYLEING POINTS
I dreamed and I was in a Netflix series, and was being tortured. I was strapped in a chair, blindfolded, my face swollen already from the beatings. I wasn’t being brave. Even in my dreams, I make the Cowardly Lion seem like John Wayne. With a gun at my head, they told me it was my last chance to identify the Kardashians. Boom, I woke up dead. In a second dream, I stepped out of character. They tried to force me to learn who each Kardashian was and who they date but, heroically, I died, refusing. Hey, I know there’s nothing more boring than listening to another person’s dream. Jeez, I had a friend who would tell me his dreams even when I jumped up and down screaming for him to stop. I had this

Out Of Touch As Usual weird dream, he’d say. What dream isn’t weird? Stop! No, this one was really weird. The difference between him and me is that I didn’t have that dream about the Kardashians, I just made it up, to make a point. You really could torture me about current celebrities and I’d be dead soon enough ‘cause I don’t know diddly. I was reminded how out of touch when This Is America won Record of the Year at the Grammys. Oh, and the song by the same name won Song of The Year. I’m thinking I’ll know the tune as soon as I hear it and that I just didn’t have the title in my head. Maybe it’s by somebody like Neil Diamond or Lee Greenwood. Well, I found the song online and nope. Never heard it. And I certainly did not know the hip-hop artist who took home the honors. He goes by
the name Childish Gambino. Huh? Carlo Gambino, I know. Childish Gambino? Just no. In the old days, you’d have movie and TV stars, recording stars, athletes, and politicians. You didn’t have YouTube stars or Snapchat celebrities or even reality TV. It was easy to know the big names. There’d be some poll that said 97 percent of the people knew who the president was and you’d say, who the hell are the three percent who don’t? In the old days, they said you were getting old when the cops started to look like kids. Now, you’re old if you don’t know who has the most Instagram followers, (I know you guys reading this are hip and could’ve told me it was Selena Gomez). And you know you’re old if you’re still a regular on Facebook. And if you think Bill Gates is going to give you $24,000 (you
never know!) for forwarding an email, you’re in the next phase after old. Oh, I’m thinking 97 percent of you know who Bill Gates is. I had to google Selena Gomez because I knew her name but didn’t know what she was famous for. I still don’t. She might even be in second place by the time this hits the newsstand, as soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo is coming on strong. Another soccer player, Neymar, is in the top ten. He’s got more than 100 million followers. Never heard of him. Imagine how famous he’d be if soccer wasn’t boring. There’s probably a social media angle here. Maybe you can become famous for not knowing who’s famous. Anyway, see you on Vero. C’mon, get with it. It’s the next Instagram. I’m already looking for the next Childish Gambino.

Rockaway Shows Love for a Beloved Friend Once again, Rockaway is rallying for a friend in need. This time it’s for a local woman that some call “the mayor of Rockaway.” During the very early hours of Sunday, February 3, Bridget O’Connor was involved in a life-threatening ordeal. Now O’Connor’s many friends and loved ones are coming together with prayers and funds to help make the next steps a little easier. What happened to O’Connor still remains a mystery, but her walk home turned into a life-threatening situation. She was rushed to a nearby trauma center, where she was initially put on life support and has undergone several surgeries. O’Connor is currently in the intensive care unit and has reportedly been in and out of consciousness since the ordeal, and doesn’t recall what happened. O’Connor is expected to endure several more surgeries, including a possible ampu-
tation of her leg, which was severely damaged. The road to recovery will certainly be a long one, however friends and family are hopeful she’ll make a comeback. O’Connor, a substitute teacher and employee at Boardwalk Bagel, is known to many for her friendly, outgoing personality, and her efforts to give back and help others. One of her last posts to Facebook before the accident was to ask if anyone was willing to donate girls clothes that she could give to students in need. In a more heart-wrenching post, just two days before the
accident, O’Connor reflected on prior medical issues that she bounced back from. “Since 2013, I have had one or two major surgeries each year. Today marks the one-year anniversary of my last surgery. I am grateful that my body didn’t have to endure any trauma from another surgery this year and that I am healthy. Thank you to everyone for your support and love during the crazy ride I was on,” the February 1 post read. Friends and family are now hoping that the same support will help O’Connor get through the long road ahead. One of her many friends, Donna Miley-Figueroa, set up a GoFundMe account to raise funds to help cover O’Connor’s medical costs and other costs since she will likely be out of work for a long time. In the post, Miley-Figueroa wrote, “Bridget is one of a kind and has always gone out of her way to help anyone in need. It’s time
we give back that same love. Let’s all come together and try and make Bridget’s journey through out her recovery as loving and comfortable as possible.” The donations immediately came pouring in as word spread of the shocking news. As we go to press, more than 375 people have donated more than $34,000 toward the fundraiser. Beyond that, other friends have started 50/50 pools to help raise additional funds, which have quickly filled up. According to Miley-Figueroa, local charities like the Graybeards and Rockaway WISH will be discussing holding a fundraiser for O’Connor in the next few months. The immediate response shows just how much O’Connor means to so many people. If you would like to make a donation, head to www.gofundme.com/help-suppor tour-beloved-beidget-oconnor or search Bridget O’Connor on GoFundMe.com.

Tears Shed Over St. Camillus’ Closing
By Kami-Leigh Agard
When late last Thursday morning, February 7, news broke that Rockaway landmark, St. Camillus Catholic Academy is slated to close June 30, parents, staff, alumni and the community-at-large were not just blindsided, but utterly devastated. According to the Diocese of Brooklyn, which is the officiating body that oversees Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens, St. Camillus’ closing is due to continuous declining enrollment, tuition arrears amounting to $114,422, operation deficits for the staffs’ medical, pension, insurance and assessment, and other mounting budget issues. However, parents, staff and alumni believe they were not given a chance, much less enough time to prove that the school, affectionately dubbed, “The Little Schoolhouse With a Big Heart,” could turn it all around, and become the “The little engine that could.” St. Camillus has educated the children of Rockaway and Broad Channel since its opening as a parish school in 1951. However, in 2014, as part of the Diocese’s strategic plan, Preserving the Vision, which began in 2008, the school transitioned from a Parish school to an Academy in 2014, resulting in it being renamed, St. Camillus Catholic Academy. According to comments pouring in on Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook page in response to The Wave newspa-
per’s early online announcement of the sudden closure, parents and staff were not just shocked, but angry. Questions loomed as to why the parents and staff were not alerted. One parent reached out to The Rockaway Times (RT) angrily imploring, “Why do I have to learn that my child’s school is going to be closed on Facebook? The teachers and the principal didn’t even know. This hurts on so many levels. We love St. Camillus, and don’t understand why this is happening. Why weren’t we informed?” The premature announcement of the closure was later confirmed at a meeting with parents on Thursday night. On Friday, February 8, the Brooklyn Diocese officially released a press release announcing the closure stating: “The Board of Members and Board of Directors of St. Camillus Catholic Academy in Queens have voted to close the school at the end of this school year. The difficult decision was made due to declining enrollment and the severe budget deficits that have resulted. “At St. Camillus in Rockaway, the current school year budget is running a deficit of more than $20,000. And with deficits of more than $100,000 the two previous years, the academy has limited funds to meet expenses. Enrollment here is down almost 25 percent from five years ago.” The RT reached out to the Diocese for specific enrollment figures for the school in the past five academic years. According to their press office, enrollment

at St. Camillus was down almost 25 percent from five years ago. For school year, 2014-2015 it was 141; 2015-2016, 130; 20162017, 105; 2017-2018, 112 and for the current school year, 2018-2019, 106. Arverne resident, Brianna Saks, a parent of a fifth-grade student is at a loss. “I feel very devastated. St. Camillus is more than just a school, we are family. My son is going to be uprooted from his friends, who he was supposed to graduate with. “Principal Raffaele Corso just started this past September. I feel badly for him because he really was trying hard to recruit new students. He’s been only there six months. Six months! And then for him to get this announcement. At the meeting last Thursday, parents, teachers and staff were all crying. There wasn’t a dry eye at the meeting. My family moved to Arverne By the Sea, with the expectation that we would have an elementary school for our children. That never happened. St. Camillus was the next best option. Unfortunately, P.S. 183 is not. We wish there was someway to save the school and fight against its closure,” Saks said. Another parent, Holly AdamsAlvira, believes that the Diocese set up the school to fail. “I transferred my two daughters from another Catholic school in the area to St. Camillus and was so pleased. However, I know for a fact that other students who were also trying to transfer were denied admission, given the reason that ‘St. Camillus is a small school, and we want to keep it that way.’ So, if one of the reasons for closing is low enrollment, why were they turning students away? “At the meeting last Thursday, I felt we were ambushed. Once the meeting started, they locked the doors, and wouldn’t let anyone else in. There were even police officers there. Then the next day, grieving counselors were on site to help students cope
with the impending closing. This just doesn’t make sense. Then in church on Sunday, the parish priest didn’t even mention the closure,” AdamsAlvira said. Other parents also expressed their frustration with not just the Diocese, but Father Richard Ahlemeyer of St. Camillus Parish. However, many people came forward and said to blame Father Richard is not just irrational, but plain wrong. Broad Channel residents, Jill and Brad Palisi, and many others immediately came to Father Ahlemeyer’s defense. The Palisis said, “There were a lot of accusations and mean things said about our Father Richard. Things were said directly to him, and about him that were very untrue, and not based on the actual facts of the situation. For example, Father Richard had no say on how the school spends its money. When a school becomes an Academy, there is a board that is formed and all decisions are made by them. The pastor is not a member of this board. Father Richard has been a pillar in our community for many years, not just in Rockaway, but in Broad Channel. He’s a huge supporter of all of our children’s sports programs and is beloved by countless people in our parish and throughout Rockaway. Father Richard did not want the school to close. This is totally out of his hands.” The RT reached out to Father Richard for comment and was informed that he was away on a retreat. One St. Camillus parishioner, (who preferred to remain anonymous), said, “Can you imagine how this is hurting Father Richard? He’s been so supportive of countless people in the community. From the Special Olympics, the CYO basketball program, the Irish Festival, and countless more — this school, like the parish, was his life.” Rockaway Park resident, Brenda Schilling, whose husContinued on page 9

band, John Schilling, wrote a letter to the editor in RT, (see page 14), said she was in absolute shock. “I graduated from St. Camillus in 1983 and my son is graduating from the school’s eighth-grade this year. However, though he is graduating and will be unaffected by the closure, St. Camillus is my family. This is an absolute shock because we were unaware of the debt. My son is going to have a St. Camillus diploma like me and his older brother, but I guess you can call it ‘survivor’s guilt,’ because though I am relieved that my son is graduating, this school has been my life for decades, and I care dearly for all the staff, students and the community it serves, which I live in. “It just seems unfair because after the school was transitioned to an Academy, we were later given a Five-Year Strategic plan to boost enrollment,
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2019 reduce debt, amongst other things. However, we still have two years left to the Plan, and now the Diocese announces that the school is closing. At a meeting last year, we were told that five Catholic schools were closing, not knowing that we were number six on the list. I know many families who tried to transfer their children from other Catholic schools in the area and were denied. This makes no sense!” Schilling exclaimed. She also shared that at the meeting, which will occur on Wednesday, February 13 (past RT press time), five Brooklyn Diocese Catholic academies will be presenting enrollment options. These include: St. Francis de Sales and St. Rose of Lima in Rockaway, Our Lady of Grace and St. Helen in Howard Beach, and Midwood in Brooklyn. Schilling also sympathized with Principal Corso. “I believe he was not given a fair chance. Six months later after he was hired, the Diocese announces the school is closing. It’s almost

like they brought him in to fail. The staff, who have been there for decades, have also lost their home. “However, I’m not afraid. As a parent and alumni, amongst countless others, who want to fight to keep the school open, anything is possible. I believe a miracle can happen to keep our doors open,” Schilling said. Alumni John Kerrigan, class of 1986, is proud of his St. Camillus history. “I made my penance, communion and confirmation here. During that time, my principals, were first, Sister Theresa Sweeney, then Sister Frances Bernadette, who was a great fundraiser. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Rita Lehman. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem before coming into the building. Overall, I am happy to have had the experience and education of a small school. I remember the view of Rockaway Playland,” boasted Kerrigan. When RT reached out to Principal Corso, the Brooklyn Diocese press office respond-
Page 9 ed on his behalf stating: “All neighboring Catholic academies serving the Rockaway peninsula, including St. Frances de Sales, stand ready to embrace the students and families of St. Camillus in their search for a new school. In keeping with Catholic values and virtues, arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth transition into the 2019-2020 school year for all students who desire to be educated in the faith.” As for the future of the buildings, when and if they are vacated, the Diocese stated: “There are no immediate plans for the school building. It is hoped that the building will be marketed as available for lease by another educational entity, thereby providing desperately needed funds to the parish. We are also hoping that the building will continue to remain available for parish activities and events, such as religious education and various other meetings.” Keep reading the RT for future updates.

St. John’s Hospital Gets State $$ Governor Andrew Cuomo announced $204 million to support 95 projects that will transform and protect New York State’s health care system. Among the $77.7 million awarded to New York City, was St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, which was awarded two grants totaling over $7 million. St. John’s will receive $3,117,938 to help fund a state-of-the-art Women’s Comprehensive Service Center, to provide a continuum of care to the women of the Rockaways, Five Towns, and Long Beach areas. In addition, $3,955,000 will be allocated to create a new Radiation Oncology Center with a linear accelerator to increase access to cancer treatment services for the community. These projects will help support the objectives of the state’s Delivery System Reform Incentive Program. The
program was created to reduce healthcare costs and improve health outcomes of New Yorkers by expanding access to inpatient, primary, preventive, and other ambulatory services as part of regionally integrated healthcare delivery systems. Ultimately, the program’s goal is to reduce avoidable hospital visits by 25 percent by 2020. “We are extremely excited to be awarded this opportunity to create services that will be of tremendous benefit to the surrounding community,” St. John’s CEO Gerard Walsh said. “Historically, our community has experienced a shortage of healthcare resources, but as the Rockaways begin to transform, so will St. John’s. We are looking forward to continuing to take the necessary steps to offer a wide range of much-needed services to our patients.”

NCO Officers Address Neighborhood Concerns By Ryan Schwach
This past Friday, February 8, members of the NYPD 100th Precinct Neighborhood Coordination program for Sector Charlie (Ranging from 108th to Breezy Point) spoke to Rockaway residents at P.S. 114 to discuss public safety issues, namely the problems revolving around the Rockaway St. John’s Home for Boys. “St. Johns has always been an issue,” said one long-time Rockaway resident. The home has been in Rockaway since 1948 and is meant as a foster home for troubled boys from around the city. The current problems have become more prevalent in the last few weeks after it was reported that three boys from St. John’s entered Boardwalk Bagel on Beach 108th Street while it was closed, but the door was unlocked. They were surprised by the owner, who they did not know was still there, and they were soon apprehended by
police. “The rules of that home have to change, it’s scary,” said the owner of the store. As of now there is a 9:30 p.m. curfew at the home, but St. John’s cannot legally enforce the rule according to Police Officer Jonathan Mercado. Another incident occurred on Beach 121st Street when another St. John’s resident was arrested after reportedly trying to get into several homes and parked cars. “Everything they’ve been dealing with as best as they possibly can, making arrests as soon as possible,” echoed new 100th Precinct Crime Prevention Officer Lauren Haber, referring to the work of the Neighborhood Coordination Officers, PO Bryan Martini, and Mercado. “They know the trouble makers, they know them by face and they know them by name,” she said. Although the problems emerging from St. John’s have been continuous, the 100th
Precinct has made inroads in mending the situation between the home and the greater Rockaway area, explaining that they met with the executive director of the home for the first time in a long time, and that she is aware of the situation and will do what she can from within to help. The officers also told a story about a 14-year-old resident of St.John’s who waved at two of the officers. “He wanted to say, ‘How are you?’,” said PO Martini. “He was waiting for the bus to go to the library.” On top of the issues with St. John’s youth, some of the meetings attendees mentioned the ongoing issue of
Rockaway youth, drinking on the beach and wandering the avenues. The officers admitted this is the slow season for this sort of situation, but that during the summer they do what they can. One Rockaway resident stood up to say, “There is always going to be drinking on the beach in Rockaway, we just want them to be respectful.” The officers also want to remind Rockaway residents to “Be mindful” of locking their doors and cars to prevent burglaries, stating these as some of the most common crimes in the west end of Rockaway, and also that these meetings are key to fixing the safety issues here on the peninsula. “These meetings are so important, everything here helps,” said Officer Haber. Camillus Closing Dear Editor: I am writing an open letter to the Rockaway community today to seek your help and guidance in a very sad situation that has occurred in Rockaway this week. As you have probably heard either through social media or from talking to your neighbors, the Brooklyn Diocese has announced the closing of St. Camillus Catholic Academy as of June 30th, 2019. St. Camillus has always been a small school that has catered to a more one-on-one interaction between the students and teachers. Children that had trouble flourishing at either, St. Francis, St. Rose or one of the public schools seemed to thrive and find their way at St. Camillus. It is that old fashion little school house with one class per grade. It is the little engine that could and did. Unfortunately, the majority of the Rockaway community heard about the potential closing before the Diocese of Brooklyn was able to inform the parents and staff of St.
Camillus. A letter indicating an important meeting for February 7, 2019 was leaked to the media. This was unfair to the families and staff to have been told this way. The reason that St. Camillus is closing is due to the lack of registration and participation from the community for the 2019-20 academic year and the failure of some parents to pay their tuition. As of now, only 90 students had registered for next year and the school is owed approximately $114,000 in back tuition. It was also revealed at a meeting with Diocesan representatives that originally the school lost $35,000 in 2017-18 school year. However, when the final financials were performed in December, that figure was increased to $100,000. The financial reserves that St. Camillus has, have become severely depleted and unable to cover its expenses. The Diocese has been looking to close St. Camillus for some time. For over forty years, St. Camillus has been rumored to be closing. In fact, these rumors had escalated over the past 14 years that I have been affiliated with St. Camillus. I had been told on many occasions that one particular educator in the community had told potential families not to consider St. Camillus because it was closing. When the school became an academy four years ago, it established a board of directors and a five-year strategic plan, which was never

fully implemented. At the beginning of this current school year, the academy board hired a new principal, Mr. Raffaele Corso. I believe that the Diocese allowed him to be hired to fail. He came in and immediately the tone and tenor of the school changed. The children and teachers were happy. He instituted a greater sense of accountability among the teachers and the students. He came in with great ideas to improve the school and re-establish St. Camillus as a school of educational excellence. With this closure, he is not being given the opportunity to fulfill his mission. As a parent of a St. Camillus student, I am trying to do whatever I can to save the school and convince the Diocese to change their minds. I am reaching out to anyone who may have a connection to St. Camillus, either as an alumnus or former band member or had a family member attend St. Camillus. I am fully aware that there are those among the Rockaway community that may have a bad memory of certain teachers or principals, or even a classmate. The school today is not the school that you remember. The present faculty and principal are dedicated to helping all the students, regardless of their ability, to achieve their full potential. The closing of St. Camillus poses a potential overcrowding both at St. Francis, St. Rose, and the other schools on the peninsula, as our students seek a new school, as well as the new families moving into the new developments here in Rockaway. St. Camillus is a needed and essential jewel that should be saved and preserved to help. This overcrowding will increase the student to teacher ratio at these schools and increase the pressures on the faculties at these schools. I would like to thank you for your time and any help you could offer in trying to save St. Camillus. Sincerely yours, John J. Schilling
The Rockaway Times Dear Editor: I am saddened to hear the news about the closing of St. Camillus. It is disheartening to think that after 68 years that the community has failed to support this “little school house”. I understand that the registration for next 2019-20 school year is only 90 students. As I talked to friends and family members, I was told that the school has a maximum for 200 students. As I understand, it had the enrollment/ registration been 150 or 75 percent of the capacity the school would remain open. As an alumnus of St. Camillus, I would call on any family that is not happy in their current situation, no matter what school you have your children in, to please call the principal at St. Camillus and say you would like to enroll your child. I believe if we get this enrollment up to 150 percent, we can save the school. Sean Sullivan
CB Shindig Dear Editor: Your suggestion in your High Tides section of the February 7 issue of The Rockaway Times is a reality in Community Board 5, Queens (Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village). For many years now, at our December meeting, we start early, have a light agenda and then invite all present to join in a holiday party, with food and refreshments. Tribulations of the St. John’s Home By Katie McFadden
“On the morning of Thursday, February 7, at 5:30 a.m., I was awoken by the screams of my wife saying there was someone in the house,” local Gregory DeBoer wrote in a letter to The Rockaway Times. The intruder, wearing a mask, entered their bedroom, looking for more items to steal after making several hits on other homes and cars on Beach 121st Street. Later that night, police had apprehended a suspect after reviewing security footage from DeBoer’s home. According to DeBoer, the alleged suspect was identified as 19-year-old Jimmy Rivera, a resident of the St. John’s Residence for Boys on Beach 110th Street. This latest event comes after a recent spree of crimes carried out by residents from the St. John’s Home. Back in early October, a St. John’s boy allegedly sliced the face of a man on the boardwalk. In early December, two cars were stolen from Beach 124th Street. According to local Mary Grossetto, three or four boys, who were allegedly from St. John’s, were apprehended in connection to this theft and one of the cars was found parked outside St. John’s. According to Broad Channel Civic President Dan Mundy, on the night of February 3, at least one young man from St. John’s was arrested for breaking into several cars and stealing at least $50. Several more instances of crimes were described at the recent Build the Block meeting with Neighborhood Coordination Officers from the 100th Precinct, including a worker from Boardwalk Bagel, who claimed a group of the boys entered the store after it was closed and proceeded to ransack the store and urinate on the floor before realizing the worker was there. At the meeting, local police advised neighbors that they are on top of these issues and know the few “bad apples” involved in these crimes by face and name and have respond-
ed by arresting individuals. But with issues on the rise, many residents are wondering what more can be done, with some going as far as suggesting that it’s time for St. John’s to close its doors for good. Who should be held accountable? That’s where it gets complicated. St. John’s opened in Rockaway in 1948 as a place to provide foster care services for young boys. It was run by the Marianists, a congregation of brothers and priests, until 2012. Since the Marianists ended their relationship with St. John’s, it continued to operate as a stand-alone non-for-profit entity with its own board of directors. Records show the properties associated with St. John’s, 150 Beach 110th Street and 144 Beach 111th Street, are still owned by Rocklyn Ecclesiastical Corp, the Diocese of Brooklyn real estate trust, a non-profit that “provides assistance in the form of Charitable Organization.” However, the programs run in the building, including a 43-bed Residential Treatment Center, and a 12-bed non-secure placement Close to Home Program, are contracted out by the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York, a not-for-profit charity that provides care and services to children and families with developmental disabilities across New York, has had a relationship with St. John’s over the years, helping with some of the operations. And last month, Little Flower announced that it has entered into an official “affiliation agreement” with St. John’s. A press release further explained the relationship, saying, “Both organizations will retain their independent
·

identities and Boards but will be stronger together in an affiliated structure. Little Flower’s Chief Executive Officer, Corinne Hammons, is now CEO of both organizations. The Rockaway Times reached out to representatives from Little Flower to address the concerns regarding the recent incidents and how they’re being addressed. As a general response, Little Flower spokesperson, Maureen Fox said, “St. John’s has been a proud member of the Rockaway community for decades and we treat each and every complaint as serious,” However, victims of recent crimes are demanding more answers. When Rivera broke into homes and cars on Beach 121st last Thursday, he was out of St. John’s between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., leading many to ask why this was allowed. The RT asked Little Flower if a curfew system is in place, but we received no direct response to this question. However, according to the NCOs, there is a curfew of 9:30 p.m. for the boys, but staff cannot legally enforce this. In a follow-up statement to the RT, Fox suggested this as well, saying, “There are 40-45 youth in the Residential Treatment Center at any given time who are free to leave the facility unaccompanied.” A St. John’s staff member, who spoke to The RT anonymously, also confirmed that there are curfews in place, but due to guidelines set by the city and state, they cannot be enforced. “There are curfews established and consequences in place, but the law is the law and this isn’t a prison. The children have rights and they’re aware of them,” the staff member said. The staff member explained that the guidelines prevent staff members from doing much at all. “Our hands are tied. We’re very limited, even relating to consequences that we can enforce. This is a job of love. The pay isn’t great and it doesn’t take much to be fired and lose your privilege to work with children should you do
the wrong thing and you don’t handle the matter correctly according to ACS guidelines. As much as this has been a challenge for the community, it’s also challenging as a staff member that can only do so much to prevent them from doing this stuff,” the staff member said. “There are a few boys in there that are bad apples, but the only laws that prevent them from doing such things are the actual law.” With police being the ones to enforce the law, Little Flower says it has been working closely with the 100th Precinct to come up with solutions. “St. John’s works very closely with our local precinct,” Fox said. “Last week, local officers came to St. John’s to meet with all of our youth to discuss the increase of crime in the neighborhood and the consequences of such. They encouraged the youth to display upstanding behavior in the community. Last week Jennifer Horsley, Interim Executive Director, met with Captain Hall to discuss possible strategies.” Beyond police intervention, Fox added that St. John’s has its own internal ways of holding those that act out accountable. “We work on teaching the youth about taking responsibility for their actions and that every action has a consequence. Some good, some bad, for example: Last month a unit manager found out a youth stole candy from a local store. He accompanied the youth to the store and the youth apologized to the store owner and paid for the items out of his allowance money.” St. John’s also utilizes an incentive program. “The incentive program is a way to reward good behaviors. However, can also be used as a corrective action tool when necessary,” Fox said. She further explained St. John’s internal punishments, saying, “When a youth gets in trouble the following consequences are imposed: The youth is restricted from recreContinued on page 17

ational activities; The youth is unable to earn points through our incentive program; The youth is counseled and referred for clinical assessment as necessary; Depending on severity of the infraction or frequency of incidents, a Red Flag meeting with staff from multiple disciplines is held to discuss strategies to address the youth’s behavior.” In direct response to the recent uptick in crimes involving St. John’s boys, Fox says St. John’s has been proactive. “We are in the process of creating additional structured and scheduled weekend activities to keep the boys busy,” Fox said. “We also have a mobile unit that patrols the neighborhood. The mobile unit has left business cards with local shop owners and encouraged owners to contact us when they are having an issue with our residents so that
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2019 we can respond immediately.” St. John’s and others that have worked directly with some of the kids on the home emphasized that those acting out only make up a small handful of the residents. “St. John’s is proud to say that most of our young men are active members of the St. John’s community and the larger Rockaway community without any incidents,” Fox said. She explained, citing several of the residents that go to school within the community, one youth that volunteers at a pet store, another that participates in the Marine ROTC program at his school, several that are active in St. John’s onsite work program and those that have been employed offsite, and several success stories. Marissa Bernowitz of We Care New York and Queens Law Associates regularly reaches out to the residents. According to Bernowitz, the boys were instrumental in helping her distribute supplies to those in need. “They
Page 17
helped unload every single truck after Sandy. If it weren’t for those boys, Rockaway wouldn’t have had the supplies that we were able to donate. Ninety percent of the time, it was St. John’s Home boys helping me,” she said, saying they were later recognized for services. Bernowitz says that hers and other community organizations have attempted to work with St. John’s directly to offer more outside services to keep the boys occupied, but they’ve often been turned down. “I’ll go there directly and ask, ‘how do we come here and bring services to your site?’ and they tell me, ‘we’ll get back to you’ and they eventually get back saying that administration said no.” When asked about outside help, Fox said St. John’s is open to involving the community in a mentoring program. “As Little Flower and St. John’s work closely together, we hope to begin a oneon-one mentoring program
for youth. If members of the community are interested in such a program, please contact Maureen Fox at 719-8753500 x5040,” she said. However, as these incident continue, it’s obvious that further discussions with the community need to take place. And they’ll soon be happening. According to Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office, the councilman’s office will be meeting with Horsley to discuss the recent incidents. Community members will also have an opportunity to further discuss these issues. Everyone is encouraged to attend the next 100th Precinct Community Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27. A representative from St. John’s is expected to attend this meeting, along with a representative from the Queens District Attorney’s office who may be able to explain why some of these kids are arrested for serious crimes, only to return to the home shortly thereafter.

Poseidon’s Prom Was an Army of Fun An Army of Fun showed up strong at this year’s Poseidon’s Prom. Despite a plethora of great events going on this past Saturday, February 9, Poseidon’s Prom was pumping with folks who showed up to show off their best formal, wild and nautical looks while dancing the night away and helping to raise funds for the end-of-summer Poseidon’s Parade. This year’s Poseidon’s Prom was more essential than ever. This year, the organizers from the Rockaway Mermaid Brigade, did not receive a grant that has helped boost the parade in the past. With permits and other items necessary to make it a success, the parade comes at a cost. So this year’s Prom fundraiser served as a necessity to make up for the lost funding. Between the big crowd and the money raised from raffle prizes donated by
a plethora of local businesses, it seems the fundraiser was a success. The night made for a fantastic time as prom-goers were treated to live music by Indaculture, radio hits by DJ Paddy Tubz, lite fare, an open bar, and plenty of chances to win fabulous raffle prizes or a 50/50. Local photographer, Joe Lupo, who is currently facing a serious medical issue, was the 50/50 winner. Katie Pastina and Bryan Fraser were crowned as this year’s Prom King and Queen. Congratulations to the organizers on making for another successful nautical night out. Besides the funds that were raised, the Prom raised even more excitement for this year’s Poseidon’s Parade, expected to be held in late September. Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals to Headline Bugalou Finale The bad news? The Bugalou Music Series is down to its last few shows of a successful second season. The good news? That means a summer of more great music is right around the corner and Bugalou isn’t going out without a bang. Bugalou Productions is excited to announce that Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals will headline the final Bugalou show of Season 2 at St. Francis de Sales on Saturday, May 11. The Rascals were one of the greatest American bands of the 1960s, producing three number one hits—Good Lovin’, Groovin’, and People Got to Be Free, as well as nine top 20 hits and multiple Gold albums. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and enjoyed a successful reunion in 2013, including a run on Broadway with their show, Once Upon a Dream, which was produced by Steve Van Zandt of the E Street Band. Rockaway favorites, Squid will open the show, which will be
sponsored by Blue Bear Risk Management. Tickets are available now exclusively to Bugalou members but will go on sale to the general public on February 15, if there are any seats still remaining. Bugalou membership, which supports this concert series, and comes with many benefits including presale availability and discounts for all shows, is still available by email to bugaloumusic@
gmail.com. Before the final show in May, there are still plenty of great acts coming up. Aztec Two-Step headlines the next Bugalou show on March 9 at the St. Camillus Auditorium, sponsored by Breen Electric-Kevin J. Breen. Their highly acclaimed tribute to Simon & Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers will form the core of the show. The BEasy Band kicks things off.
Damn the Torpedoes presents their outstanding tribute to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on April 6 at St. Camillus Springman Hall. Rockaway mainstays Wine With Sue begin the night, which is sponsored by Gregory Lasak for Queens District Attorney. Each will have a high bar to reach to surpass this past Saturday, as Blac Rabbit rocked a packed St. Camillus Academy Auditorium with their great renditions of Beatles classics, along with originals from their soon-to-be-released album, Interstella. Gerald Bair, joined by Walter Ensor and Mark Magliaro, got things off to a great start with a set of Bair originals, including a few new compositions which he debuted at Saturday’s show. Many thanks to the evening’s sponsor, The Linares Family. Bugalou is on a roll now, so get on board. Tickets to all shows can be purchased at www.bugaloumusic.com.

By Beth Hanning Sad For Catholic Schools It was announced last week that a beloved Catholic school in our area would be closing. The first closing in our area of Catholic schools was in the school year 2006 when St. Virgilius closed. Then a few years later, St. Mary Star of the Sea closed as well. When the other two schools closed, there was not as much social media presence. Now the media and social media are on fire due to the closing of St. Camillus. Many people want to know why they were not aware. Well, if you do not attend the school or are a parishioner
there, why would you be made aware? I knew that their enrollment was down and I was hoping they could stay open. Who knows what that building will become. Other posters on social media want to know why tuition is so much more expensive than when they went in the past. One reason I can think of off the top of my head is when my father and mother went to Catholic elementary school, the majority of the teachers were nuns. So, the stipends you would pay a nun are much less than the salary and benefits of teachers.
The Rockaway Times
If you pay for health coverage, you know that premiums have increased significantly in the last few years. People know that I am a Catholic school advocate (and fought long and hard to keep St. Virgilius open for many years), and have asked me did Catholic schools ever think about lowering the tuition to make them more affordable? I replied, how could they? St. Camillus has been in the area for many generations. My father graduated from there back in 1960. It is sad that the school can no longer keep its doors opened. But the bottom line is enrollment is low. Enrollment has been on the decline for many years. I noticed the first decline when our local elementary schools went from K-6 to K-8. Many people were willing to place their child in their local elementary school because they did not have to attend JHS 180. This was also true for PS 47. As their school increased in enrollment, St. Virgilius’ declined. I worry about the future of
Sean Fitzgerald
Catholic schools because I believe in a Catholic education. One can get a good education in many schools, but there is something special about a Catholic education. I truly believe that my siblings and I would not have been cared as well for, if we did not attend St. Francis Prep and St. Francis de Sales after the death of my mother. I can vividly see my sister, Christine’s firstgrade teacher when I brought Christine to the first day of first-grade, less than a month after my mother passed away. I asked to speak to Ms. Ramondi and explained our situation. She kindly informed me that she was aware of the situation and that Christine was in good hands. When I asked my friends for quotes on why they also sacrifice to pay the tuition, they explained similar stories. If you would like to make a difference, think about sponsoring a student through Ventures in Education, which gives scholarships to students in need who would like a Catholic school education.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Flu Shots 2018 was the 100th anniversary of the 1918 influenza pandemic, (when an epidemic is worldwide, it is called a pandemic). That pandemic is estimated to have killed 50 million people. There were other flu pandemics in 1957, 1968, and 2009, but thankfully they were not as deadly as 1918. The influenza epidemic of 2017-2018 was a bad one with illness and mortality rates approaching that of a pandemic. It lasted 19 weeks, and killed more people than any other epidemic since 2010, particularly children, and was associated with 30,453 hospitalizations – almost double the previous season, high in some areas of the U.S. Regrettably, 171 unvaccinated
children died during 2017-2018, accounting for almost 80 percent of deaths. The mean age of the children who died was 7.1 years, and half of them had underlying medical conditions which placed them at risk for influenza-related complications. Fifty-seven percent of them died despite being hospitalized. The influenza virus was first isolated in 1933 and a vaccine was developed shortly thereafter. There are three strains of the virus, namely A, B, and the very rare C. The first non-egg vaccine was introduced in 2013. Currently, research is ongoing to develop a universal vaccine that would cover all strains and last

for multiple seasons. At present, the vaccine for each season is formulated on a best-guess scenario based on what strains were prevalent the prior year and what strains are expected the next year. This usually results in an effective vaccine rate of 60 to 65 percent, however, for the 2017-2018 season, the guess was wrong and resulted in an effectivity rate of only 30 to 35 percent. It takes about three weeks for an immunity to develop post-vaccination and, for the flu, the immunity lasts about six months. As flu season peaks during cold weather, when people congregate in indoor areas, in this part of the country that means flu season is usually from about November 1 to April 1. If you get the vaccine in August, you may not be covered by February or so and a second dose may be required. Some experts already recommend two doses per season. There is a stronger vaccine for seniors, but a second dose would work just as well. This year’s vaccine is quadrivalent, meaning it covers four strains of the flu – two A type and two B type.
The Rockaway Times Despite public educational efforts, vaccination rates remain low. The national goal is to immunize 80 percent of the population and 90 percent of those at-risk populations (those with diseases that effect the immune system like diabetes and cancers). Unfortunately, actual vaccination rates are far lower (37 percent in 2016). This is partly due to “antivaxxers,” those who wrongly believe, despite hundreds of studies to the contrary, that vaccines are harmful, and those with religious objections. All states except California, Mississippi, and West Virginia allow non-medical vaccine exemptions based on personal or religious beliefs. Despite the best efforts of the medical community and public health services, the numbers of those refusing to be vaccinated are rising. If only they realized the danger they are putting themselves and their children in. Convincing them that they are wrong might be harder than getting Republicans and Democrats to work together constructively. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

Online Dating: Staying Safe By Gille Ann Rabbin, Esq., CIPP/US
Valentine’s Day comes and goes but the quest for love online is constant. About 50 million Americans of all age groups have tried online dating. There are almost 8,000 dating sites worldwide and more opportunities through social networking sites. Dating sites include mainstream ones like Match.com and special interest ones like Bristlr.com, a site for folks who love beards. Before you date online, know the risks. Online daters can be exposed to false information, threats to physical safety, data security vulnerabilities, and “romance scams,” among other things. Many online daters find that others lie about themselves in their profiles. In fact, a survey by the dating site eHarmony reported that more than 50 percent of people lie,
commonly about their height, weight, age, and income. Some profiles are flat-out fake. Safety concerns are well known. Predators lurk on these sites just as they do everywhere online. The media has reported many frightening online dating stories when daters move offline and meet in person. Safety experts urge Internet daters meeting offline to take precautions. Dating sites also raise information privacy issues. In the process of making matches for you, an online dating service will collect your personal information and feed it into a mathematical algorithm that generates a list of people with whom you may be compatible. However, once you provide your personal information, it has left your control. The dating site may retain it permanently, even if you cancel your account. Depending upon the site’s privacy practices, the government, a prospective employer, or even an
insurance company may end up with your information. The site may even sell your info to data brokers for marketing purposes. Online daters can be exposed to “romance scams,” in which fraudsters create fake online relationships to steal victims’ money. Here, the criminal woos the victim over time, then lures him or her off the dating site to communicate. Once the scammer wins the victim’s trust, he or she claims to have a financial crisis and asks for money. After the victim complies, the romantic interest and the victim’s money are gone. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in 2016, victims lost more than $220 million to romance scams, and they are on the rise. Scams aside, there is also the question whether a mathematically-generated match can develop into a successful romantic relationship. According to psychologists, the online dating model lacks
consideration of information critical to the survival of a long-term relationship, like aspects of relationships that emerge after people meet and get to know each other, and environmental factors. However, psychologists state that it is no worse a way of finding romance than traditional methods. Online dating continues to evolve. Some online sites have begun to offer offline meet-ups and a level of candidate vetting. While negative experiences on online dating sites may still be relatively common, and not all matches are made in heaven, attitudes are becoming more positive and the industry is strong. It’s been reported that annual revenue is $1.9 billion, 20 percent of current relationships began online, and 17 percent of couples that married within the last year met on a dating site. According to the Pew Research Center, the majority of U.S. adults believe that online dating is a good way to meet people.

That’s the Rub
Valentine’s Day, an annual holiday celebrated on February 14, originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early martyred saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not
a public holiday in any country. Now, we Catholics are a strange bunch and have a thing for martyred saints. Growing up in Woodside in the late 50s, I attended St. Sebastian Grammar School, where the good nuns would continually implore us to emulate our school’s namesake. The problem was that everywhere I looked throughout the school, I would see a painting or statue of good old St. Sebastian tied to a tree in the throes of a violent death with several arrows sticking out of his torso. To be honest with you, he did not look like a happy camper! Saintly martyrdom aside, I have always thought that Valentine’s Day is a faux holiday celebration created by an insidious conspiracy on the part of our nation’s candy, floral and greeting card industries. It’s the one day of the year, a young guy can walk into a flower shop and not be greeted with the “I wonder what

he trying to apologize for? sympathetic stares of staff. Of course, on the brighter side of this holiday, the candy, floral and greeting card moguls are only after my hardearned cash and are not entertaining any thought of tying me to a tree as an archery target...at least I hope not! Those of you who have followed this column since the get-go, know that a few years back I sustained a rather egregious brain fart, which led me to believe it might be a good idea that, rather than spend my kid’s inheritance like a drunken sailor on candy,
flowers, cards, etc., I would attempt to make Valentine’s Day more of an educational experience for the entire family. Needless to say, nothing good came from this horrendous brainstorm and, in fact,

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES
Continued from Page 28 it turned out to be a very, very bad idea. The repercussions of my ill-fated attempt to thwart this commercialized “Holiday of Love” served little more than to immediately place me back in the conspiratorial camps of candy, cards and flowers forevermore... if for nothing more than my own personal safety. Grace has been hinting about a real body massage lately, so I reached out and spoke with a local masseur, who recommended a hot stone massage, a type of massage therapy. It’s used to help you relieve muscle tension and pain, and reduce stress and anxiety. During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat. I told the massage therapist that I was a little concerned about
the temperature of the stones being placed on your body and was assured that hot massage stones are heated to between 130 and 145 degrees. That’s why you should always go to a licensed massage therapist and not your local McDonald’s where they sometimes offer a hot coffee massage. And so, this year, in addition to the requisite candy, cards and flowers, I have also procured a rather substantial gift card for a local health spa where my beloved will be able to avail herself of an ultimate hot stone massage. I also mentioned to “she who must be obeyed” that as long as she will be spending some time with a massage therapist, she might as well unload some of her personal problems. I assured Grace that there is no shame in seeking out the help of a therapist. After all, that’s where Waldo always goes to find himself. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

WRONG-WAY CORRIGAN – 1938 At the age of 31, Douglas Corrigan took off from Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field on July 17, 1938 in a modified Curtiss Robin plane. His survival supplies were limited with two chocolate candy bars, two boxes of fig bars, a quart of water and a map of the U.S. with a route from New York to California clearly marked out. He spent many years trying to get permission to fly to Ireland, without success. The government told him an ocean crossing flight was “out of the question.” Finally, he was awarded consent to fly from NY to California. His departure day was a foggy morn-

Egg Noodles with Bacon and Cabbage By Sharon Feldman
Serves: 8 Ingredients: 8 ounces No Yolk medium egg noodles 8 slices bacon, chopped (you can substitute turkey bacon) 1/2 cup unsalted butter, divided 1 medium sweet onion, chopped 1 head cabbage, shredded (I used Napa) 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon ground fresh pepper Sprinkle of garlic powder, basil, parsley, oregano Optional: Cooked broccoli, diced up ½ cup shredded mozzarella ½ cup whole wheat bread crumbs Directions: Cook bacon. I like to cook ba-
con in the oven. I preheat oven to 400 degrees and spread bacon (not overlapping) on a lined baking sheet. Usually cooks for 20 to 25 minutes. Once bacon is cooked, remove to a plate with paper towels and add the bacon grease to a large pan. Add ½ the butter. Once melted, add the diced onions and sauté until translucent. Sprinkle a little salt, pepper and other seasonings. Then add the shredded cabbage. Cook until wilted. Cook the no yolk egg noodles according to package. Drain and add to the onion, cabbage mixture. Chop the bacon and add to pan. Mix thoroughly. If you are adding the optional ingredients, mix in the broccoli. Top with the cheese and breadcrumbs. In a 375 degree oven, put the pan on the middle rack and cook for 20 minutes.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2019 you are feeling has to be coming from somewhere, and since there is no one around at the moment, it has to be coming from inside of you. Life can be challenging at times, to say the least. So, it’s not always easy to remember that the love and peace and happiness we are looking for actually live right within our own hearts. For me, life is about the moments, the moments that we can remember to be in that wonderful place inside of ourselves which helps to create more of that feeling in the world. I’m not saying it’s easy, the world has certainly made it hard for us to remember what’s truly important. Take a minute to think about what you have feel, ever! Love It’s Not What You Think - Or Is It? By Kathy Lord
What we are taught about love is that it’s “out there somewhere.” Well, what if it’s not? I’m not saying that love doesn’t exist. I am suggesting that it doesn’t exist in the way that most of us think it does. Imagine if the very thing you are searching for, resides deep inside of you, a “state of being” that you could access if you only knew how. Imagine if love wasn’t something you had to go find by meeting the perfect someone, or getting married, or having a relationship, boy, that would really change everything now, wouldn’t it? Well, you’re in luck as far as I’m concerned, because I don’t believe we can “find” love, I believe that we can only “be” love. Many of us have had the wonderful feeling of “falling in love” with someone. We meet someone that we really like, a person who listens to us, seems interested in our life, helps us to feel good about ourselves, and we say, “I’m falling in love.” Yes, you are falling in love, but what if the person you are falling in love with is actually yourself? Now there’s a novel idea, but I think it’s the truth. Where we get into trouble is thinking that it’s someone else that is responsible for how we feel. We are the only ones responsible for how we
The Rockaway Times live within it for a bit and remember that “joy” you feel is actually a part of who you are. If you are feeling wonderful for no apparent reason, then you already know that you need nothing else to “be in love.” “It makes no difference whether we go back to the teaching of Jesus and make them our own again, or whether we seek new forms. Where they strike the eternal core of humanity, the teachings of Jesus and Lao-tsu, of the Vedas and of Goethe are the same. There is only one doctrine. There is only one religion. There is only one Happiness. Love and joy and the mysterious thing we call “happiness” are not over here or over there, they are only within ourselves.” - If The War Goes On Hermann Hesse.

Calvin Coolidge is the only president to have been born on July 4th. Three presidents have died on that day – Adams, Jefferson, and Monroe. Richard Nixon was a talented musician who learned to play piano at an early age and went on to learn violin, clarinet, saxophone, and accordion. In 1961, he even performed a song he wrote on The Jack Paar Program. Gerald Ford was a two-time college football national champion with the University of Michigan in 1932 and 1933. The Literary Chick Review: Five Hundred 45s
Many mourn the day the compact disc was born. Bands had frequently spent much time seeking the best use of the visual arts to comment (or deliberately not comment) on their music. The point of their efforts was to evoke a response in their audience. Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz, visual artists themselves, released the book, Five Hundred 45s at The Morrison Hotel in New York to much acclaim. A study, or happy flip through of this book brought me back to various places and times, also
stirring up remembrances of running out and buying a great many of the singles selected for this volume. It was so much fun to flip through the racks of Sam Goody or the like, nabbing 45s with covers that struck your eye like a shiny diamond or evoked an emotion you couldn’t quite put your finger on from a band you had never even listened to previously. This book has it all – a shot of The Rolling Stones looking like choir boys on the cover to the debonair Frank Sinatra’s for “We Were Falling in Love,” “A Swingin’ Affair,” to the stark plain-as-you-see-’em stripped down Talking Heads’ “Loving Building on Fire,” to the haunting cover for Scarling’s “Band Aid Covers The Bullet Hole.” Five Hundred 45s is a wonderful time capsule of a book that I simply fell into, gazing at and reminiscing for hours. Spencer Drate and Judith Salavetz are legendary award-winning creative directors/designers/authors/media writers/
radio personalities/curators. They have designed for 25 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees and their music designs were included in MoMA, AIGA and The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame archival collections, major museum/ gallery shows and major touring shows. Spencer was nominated for a Grammy in album packaging in 1979, co-designing with Talking Heads’ “Fear of Music” album package. They have won many album design awards and are still “designing for music” in NYC. ADDABBO PUSHES INSURANCE OVERSIGHT
Karinsky Swims on Top
Sandon (in Red) holding the MVP trophy.
Local resident and surfer, Sandon Karinsky who attends St. Francis Prep, came out on top at the 2019 Catholic High School Athletic Association Swimming Championships. With swimmers only allowed to compete in two individual events and two relays, Karinsky walked away with medals in all events, also taking the 2018 - 2019 Vin Harkins MVP Award. Most impressive is that Ka-
rinsky won the 100 Butterfly with a time of 51.34 and NY State Championship Qualifying swims in the 100 FLY, 200 FR (1:45.53) and 50 Free (21.33). Not only qualifying for the States event, Karinsky’s performance also qualified him for the NCSA JUNIOR NATIONALS in the 50 FREE and 100 FLY and the USA FUTURES CHAMPIONSHIPS in the 50 FREE.

The New York State Senate passed S.1634, co-sponsored by NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., which creates a task force to examine and report on whether policyholders and communities have adequate insurance coverage and if they are able to rely upon that coverage in the event of a natural disaster. “The devastation following Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Irene, brought to light the need for oversight of current insurance processes. Homeowners experienced long delays in the insurance process due to the large volume of claims received, and the obstacles presented by the storms to insurance companies,” Addabbo said. “These delays slowed the recovery process, and resulted in hardships for homeowners and communities seeking to perform repairs.” Many policyholders were surprised to learn that they
did not have adequate coverage for flood damage. There was confusion over what types of damages homeowners and flood policies cover, and what the coverage limits were under their policies. As a result, many policyholders received payments that were far less than the actual cost of the damages. These issues along with the increased frequency with which New York State is seeing destructive storms, stress the importance in examining how the insurance industry responds to disasters and what steps the industry can take to improve its response in the future. “The Task Force will help the public, the insurance industry and public officials determine how the insurance companies are doing in their response to disaster claims and what they can do in the future to improve actions,” added Addabbo. The bill has been sent to the Assembly.
