Rocco’s Welcomes Rockaway to the Family By Katie McFadden

“Welcome to the family!” Rocco’s of Roc Beach is officially open. On Tuesday, April 13, the new coal brick oven pizza and Italian restaurant located at 11510 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, opened for a “soft opening,” that turned out to be anything but. As word spread, as many as 50 people were lining up outside the door to try to get a table for the night. With their thin-crust, crispy coal brick oven pizza offerings, fresh pasta and bread made right on site and a wide array of entrees for all tastes, Rocco’s had people coming back for more, literally, on day one. “We had multiple people come in the afternoon and then come back later in the night to eat again,” the owners said. While trying to meet the high demand from dine-in and takeout customers, and working around a downed POS (point-ofsale) system, the staff managed to deliver quality food while making

customers feel like part of the family. Local social media pages flooded with rave reviews for the food and service by lucky customers who got a taste of Rocco’s on the busy first day. Staff from The Rockaway Times were among some of the lucky ones who got to experience the hype in the restaurant’s backyard outdoor space on Tuesday afternoon. The staff could not be more welcoming as they dished out fresh bread, oil and garlic zucchini chips for the table, thin-crust margherita and white pies, and entrees including chicken vodka parm with a side of penne ala vodka, baked ziti and Rocco’s signature filet of sole with a glass of cabernet and beers to say cheers

to Pizzaiola, Salvatore, and Executive Five Star Chef Bruno, who comes from Italy. Rocco’s is a family operated restaurant managed by co-owners Rocco, Vincent P. and Rocco’s grandson Louis, so when someone steps into Rocco’s they give them the family treatment, making customers feel welcome and comfortable throughout their culinary experience. With great cuisine and an extensive drink menu featuring specialty cocktails, a broad wine list and beers ranging from a 10.2% ABV Belgium Pirat, to Rockaway Brewing Company IPAs and domestic favorites, nobody goes hungry or thirsty at Rocco’s. As the owners work out the early kinks and handle high demand, they ask that customers have patience—and make reservations. Especially as the restaurant faces capacity limits of 50% due to state Covid restrictions. And reservations are flooding in. As crowds built on Tuesday, the owners say the phone was ring-

ing off the hook. “We’re booked with reservations from tonight through Saturday. We’re completely sold out already for Thursday and Friday,” the owners said. To keep up with demand, for the time being, Rocco’s is unable to offer delivery, but they will have it in the future. For now, takeout and dine-in service with reservations is available. Street parking is available around the vicinity of the restaurant and on weekends, they will offer valet service with access to a nearby lot. For a full menu, online ordering and more info, check out www.RoccosofRocBeach.com and call 718-799-5050 to make reservations.

Christian Charity is nothing new for the group of Irish lads from all over the Rockaways and Breezy Point, as they have used their annual Rockaway Irish Festival each year to raise much-needed monies for local parishes and Christian causes. Since the inception of the Irish Fest after Superstorm Sandy in 2013, the Division has donated $265,000 to local parishes and organizations.

AOH Division 21 Treasurer John Moroney hands off the $5,000 check to St. Camillus-St. Virgilius Parish Pastor Msgr. Richard Ahlemeyer.

AOH Division 21 President Mark Edwards had the following to say about the raffle donations: “It is always a great day when we can give much needed monetary help to our local churches. I am especially proud of the boys who, despite an ongoing pandemic, were able to make this raffle a rousing success. Though we couldn’t have our

annual Irish Festival, Golf Outing for Special Olympics and Night at the Races fundraisers, we found a way to give back to our community who always supports our endeavors. Peninsula-Wide Spring Cleaning Set For April 24 By Katie McFadden

It’s time to do some spring cleaning. A mass effort spearheaded by some local residents is in the works to bring some tender loving care to the community. On Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m, all are welcome to do their part and participate in a peninsula-wide cleanup. In January, a cleanup effort around Beach 101st and the Rockaway Freeway, organized by Torey Schnupp, Mike Scala, John Cori and Christine James, inspired an effort to do more. Local resident, Christine James wanted to take it a step further, by broadening the effort on a peninsula-wide scale, to unite the community in doing something positive. Having lived on various parts of the peninsula her whole life, James says she’s often noticed areas that tend to accumulate trash. From overflowing trash baskets or areas that don’t have any, to the beach breezes scat-

tering trash, to people making it a habit of adding garbage to areas where trash already accumulates, James says there are a number of factors contributing to why parts of the peninsula have become messy and could use some “tender loving care.” With the Covid pandemic putting a financial strain on and understaffing city agencies, it seems as of late, the problems have become exacerbated, so James hopes the community can come out strong on Saturday, April 24 to do their part, no matter how big or small. So far, with the efforts of “Bringing Back Rockaway,” a coalition spearheading the event, it is quickly becoming bigger than imagined. From local school groups to nonprofit organizations, boy and girl scout troops, civic associations, local precincts and others, many are starting to jump on board to help with the mass cleanup effort, and organizers are encouraging even more to join in to make it a success and

to create some unity at a time when many are divided. “We’re gonna do this cleanup and we need all to be part a part of it. Everyone needs to work together, and we need unity because there’s a lot of divide here. Let’s bring some unity and get this town clean,” James said. For several weeks, James has been reaching out to everyone from local elected officials to local organizations to spread the word and recruit people for the mission. She’s also put out requests for areas that people would like to see be cleaned up, as well as taken the time to drive around the peninsula to see firsthand areas that could use more attention. A list of target areas so far includes Beach Channel Drive from Beach

130th heading uptown toward the ramp to Roxbury, the shopping corridors of Beach 129th and Beach 116th Street, the northside of the boardwalk from Beach 126th to Beach Continued on page 10

***** Bummer. We saw a listing that the old Sand Bar property on Beach 116th and the Boardwalk was ready to be leased and we ready for a beachfront happy hour. But alas, the listing broker had the wrong photo and it's the vacant lot across from the new condos that can be leased on a temp or shortterm basis. ***** For the seventh year in a row, The Rockaway Times won multiple awards at the New York Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, a statewide competition among New York newspapers. Guess that means we’re not only free but pretty good, too. Truth be told, the credit goes to our managing editor, Katie McFadden. She’s either writing award winning stories, making award

There are rumors that another salon will open in its place. We wish everyone the best. ***** Avoid The Day Bookstore & Café does a great job keeping locals reminded that a good old fashioned book store is in Rockaway. And the place is often buzzing with neat stuff. On Saturday, April 24 they’ll host a number of authors including Jill Eisenstadt (From Rockaway, Swell), Mark Healey (Gotham Baseball), and Dan Brown (The Sometimes Why) who will be on hand for book signings and Q and A’s. PENINSULAWIDE SPRING CLEANING Continued from Page 6 109th Street, Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 121st to Beach 108th Street, the Rockaway Freeway from Beach 108th to Beach 84th Street, Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 107th to Beach 102nd Street, Rockaway Beach Boulevard from Beach 101st to Beach 84th Street, Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Freeway from Beach 84th to Beach 77th Street, Beach Channel Drive from Beach 76th to Beach 59th Street, Beach 67th Street to Beach 30th Street and Edgemere and Seagirt Blvd., the merchant strip around Beach 20th and Mott Avenue, Beach 9th Street from Seagirt Blvd. to the beach. Groups of volunteers will be split up to pick up trash in each area next Saturday. As word has spread, more and more people have teamed up with James to make this effort a success. One of those people includes Helen Montero, a local resident, community board

member, a member of FRANC and staff member for Queens Defenders, who James calls “a powerhouse,” for her efforts to rally organizations on the east end of the peninsula. Montero says when she heard about the effort through Dan Brown of the Queens District Attorney’s office, she instantly wanted to get involved. “We’ve been trying as a community board to merge and unite the different areas of the Rockaway and I felt doing this with everyone would just be amazing,” she said. Using her connections, Montero has been reaching out to organizations such as local nonprofits that serve youth, business associations, the 101st Precinct, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and others on the east end to get on board. “This is slowly becoming a bigger event and I’m so excited about it,” Montero said. Another “powerhouse” in this effort, according to James is Liz Hanna, who is helping to put some extra focus on Beach 116th Street. “Beach 116th Street has not been looking so

good. Liz Hanna brought up fixing up the planters around Beach 116th and has been trying to work on raising money and partnering with Lisena Garden Center to redo all of the planters because they need a lot of tender loving care,” James said. Through the Rockaway Businesses Need You group, Hanna has been raising money through gift card raffles to help support the effort. Local organizations like The Graybeards and Rockaway WISH have also helped and Hanna plans on requesting donations from businesses on the block to help out. With the funding, Lisena will be tasked with redoing the planters around the block with mini spruce evergreens, hopefully ahead of next Saturday’s cleanup, and there may be other efforts in the future for a community planting in which volunteers can plant colorful perennials in the planters to bring some beauty to the block. James says she’s excited to see the effort shape up and encourages others to join, wheth-

The Rockaway Times er it’s by volunteering in one of the target areas, or cleaning up their own block or yard. “I feel like our community comes together during any kind of crisis or to help people and I thought why don’t we all come together for this event. I really think it’s a peninsula wide issue and I think it’s important that we all get involved. And with all the divide, I think we need something right now to show we’re united. We really need to get back to being there for each other. Let’s get this cleaned up. Let’s show people what it looks like to live someplace nice and beautiful,” she said. If anyone would like to get involved, whether it’s by volunteering, providing monetary donations for plantings, providing donations of bags, gloves or other tools, or for more information, email: bringingbackrockaway@ gmail.com and join the Bringing Back Rockaway Facebook group for more updates. In the event of rain on April 24, the cleanup will be rescheduled for Saturday, May 1.

The Itty Bitty City Kitties Queen By Katie McFadden

Last week, Arverne resident Samantha Knox was at Curran’s Superior to pick up Salami, Prosciutto, Pepperoni, Bologna and Mortadella. But she wasn’t there for the meat. Those are the names she gave to the five stray cats that she was tasked with trapping in the backyard of the business as part of her mission to help control cat colonies around the community. On Saturday, she released three of the nowspayed females back into the care of Curran’s owners. Bologna is loose in her garage and Mortadella eluded the initial traps. This is all part of a day’s work for the director of Itty Bitty City Kitties. Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) is just one part of Knox’s rescue efforts. Since launching Itty Bitty City Kitties last year, Knox has been making strides around the peninsula when it comes to animal rescue, rehabilitation, adoption of orphaned kittens and supporting feral feline welfare. And what started as an unexpected hobby has turned into a full-time job, on a volunteer basis. Knox says this all began as the world was starting to shut down during the pandemic. On March 13, 2020, a neighbor asked if she knew anything about cats. The extent of her expertise was owning cats herself. But Knox stepped up to help when her neighbor told her that a stray cat had given birth in his car and he didn’t know what to do. After calling vets and other rescues that were swamped, Knox took matters into her own hands. She did some research and began caring for the cat and her kittens, gaining her trust over time. After her neighbor eventually chased the family out of his car, Knox went on a desperate search for the feral cat and her babies. She was able to locate them and decided to take them into her home to continue care. Teaching herself all about bottle feeding and infant kitten care, Knox helped raise the kittens and adopted them out when they were old

enough, and it was just the beginning. “I got those kittens home and it became something I really liked and within a year, it’s become a full-time job that doesn’t pay,” Knox said. As for the mom, which she named Luna, Knox knew she couldn’t release her without first getting her spayed. As a fulltime mother and K-3rd grade teacher, and with her husband, a lighting specialist out of work with the entertainment industry shut down, Knox says they weren’t in the best situation as the pandemic began. Learning that it would cost over $800 to spay the cat locally, Knox began to seek out alternatives. She ultimately drove two and a half hours out of town to find someone to spay Luna at a reasonable cost. Having a gut feeling that this wouldn’t be her only rescue, Knox decided to take it a step further. She started to learn about TNR and became certified through online classes. Then, as a certified TNR rescuer, she began working with the ASPCA, which gives her access to spay and neuter animals and ear tip them after, have them vaccinated and address underlying issues, for free. As someone who considered becoming a veterinarian when younger, but ultimately went in a different direction after experiencing an animal being euthanized, Knox realized maybe it was an itch she still needed to scratch. And she recognized a need for it with ever-grow-

ing cat colonies becoming more noticeable around the peninsula. “You can’t be a kitten lady if you’re not going to go back and deal with the colonies as well,” she said. “When I started learning about TNR, I realized there’s a high need for it in Rockaway. I realized I could make an impact by doing TNR and being someone that makes a change. In the last year, it’s been important to find ways to help others. I can’t be on the frontlines, but I can help all of these cats.” As a certified TNR specialist, Knox began locating large cat colonies, including one in Jamaica Bay and others around the boardwalk and began efforts to TNR the strays. To date, Knox says she’s helped trap, neuter and release more than 100 cats, mostly from around the peninsula. And her efforts have grown. On any given day, Knox says she receives about 25 emails about kittens and cats that need help. As we go to press, Knox says she currently has 19 cats in her home, mostly kittens, that she is caring for. At one point, she had 39. However, as others took notice of Knox’s efforts, she’s gained some help with an Itty Bitty City Kitties committee. Knox says local resident Becky Glennon helps assist with TNR and she has five others who assist with trapping. She also has 11 fosters, including three kitten care specialists, two of which help with socializing, and her husband and young son also help out when they can. However, rescue and rehabilitation come with a high price. “We’re all volunteers and this is coming out of our own pockets. The amount of cat food and litter I go through in a week is unbelievable. One bag of formula is $90 and I’ll go through three

in one litter. It’s crazy,” Knox said. As word spreads about Knox’s efforts, help is starting to come in. As a 501c3, Knox says she’s started to apply for grants. And in true Rockaway fashion, locals are stepping up to help. “Rockaway really helps its own, which I appreciate. I am getting donations. I have an Amazon Wishlist set up and people have been picking items off of the list and sending them to me. Liz Hanna did a raffle fundraiser for me and that was amazing. I’m starting to see donations creep in more as people finally see me as a presence here,” Knox said. And she has no plans of stopping anytime soon. “I love it,” she said.

“I think I accidentally walked into the thing I was supposed to be doing my whole life.” Anyone interested in helping Knox and Itty Bitty City Kitties can make donations through Paypal to: ittybittycitykitties@ gmail.com. If anyone spots kittens in need, Knox asks people to take a photo, note the location, and send it to her by email at: ibckkittenhotline@ gmail.com. For information about adopting kittens or to see updates on Knox’s TNR efforts, follow Itty Bitty City Kitties on Facebook or Instagram. Knox is also currently working on a website (www.Ittybittycitykitties.com), which she hopes to launch in May, that will include links to applications, fundraising and fostering information and resources for others.

Get Hooked With FTW By Daniel Lynch

Drop your lines! The recreational striped bass fishing season opened this morning, Thursday, April 15, in New York State. For non-anglers, this means that anglers are now capable of fishing for (and keeping if size permits) striped bass. There is much more to it than casting your reel. First, you must know where to locate the bait and bass. Second, you must know exactly what fishing equipment to use, for example, line and lures, to keep your catch on the hook. This could be a challenge, unless you are an avid angler with many years of experience like Captain Patrick Butera. Butera, owner and Captain of fishing vessel Forever Two Worlds (FTW), a smooth riding 35-foot Duffy (a vessel known for providing comfort and stability), is a Rockaway Beach native who has made “the ocean he grew up in, his office.”

Butera’s love for fishing started at a very young age. “As children, my friends and I didn’t stay inside and play video games—we went to the beach. We body surfed, skim boarded, boogie boarded, and of course, fished. I’ll never forget my best friend Graham Hill (co-owner of The Almeda Club) coming over to my house to tell me about the fish he and his dad caught on the beach. I didn’t believe him until the next day. We raced down to the beach with borrowed rods and caught snapper after snapper (baby bluefish about the size of your hand). We stopped counting at 50, but who knows when we stopped fishing. We couldn’t have been more than 8, but I

can still remember the grin on both of our faces.” Fast forward, Butera, now 27, bares that same grin when clients who charter FTW for fishing trips, have one on the line. “There is truly nothing better than battling it out with giant

striped bass,” he said. “It just never gets old. On any given day we may travel twenty miles or more to accomplish our goal, but it is always worth going the extra mile for giant bass. You never know when all hell is goContinued on page 13

That’s what I love most about fishing.” When asked what Forever Two Worlds stands for, Butera said, “At its heart, Forever Two Worlds represents how two seemingly opposite lifestyles easily collide in this town. One moment you can be in Manhattan working your nine to five, and just forty-five minutes later you can be throwing on some baggies, paddling out, surfcasting, or jumping in your boat to enjoy the beautiful waters that surround us.” Butera says he takes pride in being a local of this community and “loves showing customers what its water has to offer. We have one of the best fisheries on the East Coast. People don’t believe me when I show them pictures of what lives in the waters surrounding New York City. Whales, dolphins, tuna, seals, sharks, swordfish, marlins, jumbo bass, doormat fluke, giant sea turtles...I can go on and

on.” Whether it’s for a half-day or full-day trip, or even a shark fishing experience, Butera aims to leave guests with a memorable experience. “My goal is to always show you a good time, educate, and leave you with photos and great stories to tell,” he said. “Everyone is welcomed aboard. It doesn't matter if it’s your first time fishing, we love to teach! We specialize in Striped Bass fishing, running both morning and afternoon trips. Forever Two Worlds is one of the cleanest and most comfortable boats on the water in this neck of the woods.” There is no better way to enjoy a day on the water than in the expert hands of Captain Butera. The excitement and hunt will have you hooked! If you are looking to catch some serious fish, give Butera a call at 646-705-2659. Also, be sure to visit www.forevertwoworlds.com where you can find a charter schedule and fees, as well as Buter’s custom FTW clothing line. Let’s support our local fishermen!

It's

been a year since we lost you, but you are in our hearts and minds. We miss and love you.

What is a Neighbor He walks into your house the first day you move in and starts cleaning without asking. He puts a fence up at the top of the stairs when your children are born and 20 years later there is not one nail or lock that is loose. There is no need to go to Home Depot or Walmart… Because he has three of what you need in different sizes and still in original wrapping He talks about his children and grandchildren with pure Pride and Joy. He starts a book club of two… with your book lover wife and himself. Everyday after you shatter your ankle… he checks on you and brings you food He asks you if the Nuns from the covenant can swim in your pool… You get delighted when you come home from work and find ten Nuns frolicing in your pool. The person on the block everyone looks to for help and guidance He tells wonderful stories of his former professional life Your daughter instead of taking the bus, calls him from school to pick her up (many times) without either one of them telling you. He treats your children like his own grandchildren Delivering eggs to your door is a monthly ritual You don’t take in your garbage cans for 18 years… because he beats you to it. He helps an elderly neighbor every single day and walks her dog… They become the fixture of the neighborhood. When you asked his wife many years ago… So why do you love this guy?… She says, “well to tell you the truth… I thought when I married him he would treat me like a Princess… But instead he treats me like a Queen”. He is Ed and will always be like the Father I never had, the neighbor I always looked for and the Angel I look up to. You were a great neighbor and will be an even better Angel. I love you Ed. Community Board 14 April Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan

On Tuesday, April 13, Community Board 14 (CB14) held its monthly meeting via Zoom. Chairwoman Dolores Orr began the meeting by welcoming 15 new community board members. Because of the packed agenda, Orr started right away with the approval of CB14’s March 9 Minutes. Once the Minutes were approved, Orr gave a brief report. She stated that there will be a Land Use Committee meeting on April 20, and the next CB14 meeting will be May 4. District Manager Jon Gaska followed Orr’s report with a brief announcement that the Mayor’s office has announced block parties will be permitted for this summer. He stated that in order to apply for a block party permit, the application must be completed at least 60 days in advance to the event. The application can be found on the Mayor’s Office website. Additionally, at least 75% of people on the block must sign a petition stating that they have no objection to the event.

The meeting continued with a brief presentation brought by HPD’s, Lida Aljabar, who provided updates regarding the Edgemere Community Plan. This plan is not part of the Arverne East Project. The Edgemere Community Plan is a community planning process that HPD began with other agencies in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2017. Aljabar stated that HPD is continuing to develop on the original plan and is working to create a land use strategy in order to establish a long term vision for the peninsula’s infrastructure. Additional information about the Edgemere Community Plan can be found on nyc.gov/edgemere. Following Aljabar’s announcement, the floor opened up to the elected officials and their representatives on the Zoom call. Newly-elected Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers gave an update about her first three weeks in office. She stated that although her office remains closed due to COVID-19, they are still taking all constituent matters. Brooks-Powers stated that she is

currently working toward establishing a permanent vaccination site within the district, and especially in Far Rockaway. Next, Dan Brown, spoke on behalf of the Queens District Attorney’s Office. He stated that on April 21, they will be hosting a live Zoom meeting at 5 p.m. for National Crime Violence Rights Week. In order to register for this event, you can sign up at Queensda.org. Sen. James Sanders Jr.’s representative, Stephanie Samoy spoke next, introducing the Health Awareness Day Event on April 26 on Beach 58th St. She stated that they have partnered with many vendors in an effort to make this a fun day for all. Finally, Sandee Doremus representing Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr, said their office has set a tentative date for free COVID-19 antibody testing in Rockaway. As of now, this testing will take place on Saturday, May 8, between 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the Bagel Store by Cross Bay Bridge. The meeting continued with a member from Rockaway’s RISE, Anna Fisyak, who provided a

presentation regarding a plan for the dunes from Beach 9th to Beach 109th Streets. The main goals for this plan are to prioritize local voices, biodiversity, preserve the natural landscape on the north side of the boardwalk, and support community led stewardship in workforce development. In an effort to gather community feedback, there will be a Community Design Workshop on April 22 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m via Zoom. The meeting continued with the main agenda items. Land Use Consultant Paul Graziano spoke on behalf of the Land Use Committee. He provided background to the City Council Bill #2186-2020 “Planning Together,” which was created in December 2020. When created, Council Speaker Corey Johnson stated that this bill would be the cure to all land use problems throughout the city by comprehensive planning. However, Graziano stated that Continued on page 17

COMMUNITY BOARD 14 Continued from Page 16 this bill is the exact opposite of comprehensive planning. He reported to CB14 that this new legislation would create an entirely new structure above existing planning, because it allows the city to go around the ULURP process. In this plan, there will be a Director of Long Term Planning, who would essentially be the deciding factor for any issue not agreed on by community boards and the City. Graziano stressed that if this were to occur, there will be over development throughout the entire city. This legislation would apply to both private and public development projects. Graziano concluded his presentation by stating the major losses our community would face if this bill were to pass. First, it would take away the limited power CB14 and the public already has. Additionally, it is a topdown process. He stressed that it is imperative to come up with real comprehensive planning

because this bill is really a comprehensive up-zoning proposal. Because the population projections are being based on the word of a single Director, new housing projects could be created in every part of the city every ten years, without really analyzing the population data. Lastly, he stated that this could create neighborhood tensions because of the influx of developments and people now living in the affected areas. CB14 passed a motion to vote no against this legislation, and Gaska will write a letter to the City in opposition to this legislation. The Chair of Youth Services & Education Committee, Harold Paez, gave an update regarding NYC schools and student activities. He stated that the Committee has its own concerns regarding the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns and overall physical and mental health in our youth. Paez reported that organized sports in Rockaway will return this summer with all social distancing guidelines in effect. The Parks Dept. is working with the 101 Precinct to implement sports programs on the east end of the

peninsula, as well as creating evening hours by establishing night lighting. He also stated that the Sorrentino Center in Far Rockaway, which used to be a sports recreation center for youth activities, has been temporarily shut down due to being used as a COVID-19 testing site. Orr asked Gaska to write a letter to the Parks Dept. Commissioner, in hopes that they can find another testing site so this center can be returned to its original use. Paez concluded the report by stating that there is a large disparity amongst schools in Rockaway with regard to students choosing blended learning versus full remote learning. Paez stated that according to NYC data results, this evidence shows a clear distance between the socioeconomic line for students throughout the Rockaway peninsula. The last item on the agenda was a report from the Health & Social Services Committee, which was presented by Felicia Johnson and Sonia Moise. Johnson reported on the housing development project on 20-50 Nameoke Avenue. This housing project

will create 117 units for formerly homeless individuals with severe mental illness, as well as 46 units for affordable housing. The demolition has already begun, and the contract is set for 15 years. Mental health services will be provided at the development, however, these are not mandatory services. Although every potential tenant will go through a screening process, this complex still raised concerns for many CB14 members. Johnson stated that it is important to note that the 46 units for affordable housing will not necessarily be made aware that the other renters in the building suffer from mental illness. The location of the development also raised concerns for CB14 members because it is in an area with the highest crime rates in the 101 Precinct. Members stated that they want to provide services to those that need it, but the location of this development plan was not thought out by NYC. Ultimately, CB14 passed a unanimous motion opposing the development of this new housing project on Nameoke Avenue.

An American Life

By Lou Pastina

My father’s parents came here at the end of the 1900s like so many other immigrants. They came here separately four years apart and came from the same region in Italy, just south of the Amalfi coast. I asked my dad why they had come here, and he relayed that southern Italy was very poor, not the tourist attraction that it is today, and there was little prospect of improvement. My grandparents married here in America, had six kids (my father being the youngest) and bought a house in 1922. My father was born in the house in 1928, and with the exception of two years of military service, and one year after getting married, spent his entire life living in that house. Next year, 2022, will mark the 100th anniversary of the house

being in the Pastina family. My grandparents gave their kids the opportunity to seize the American dream. Of their six children, only my Aunt Rose and my father did not go off to World War II. My Uncle Tony fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient. My dad took full advantage of what New York and America offered going to public grammar school, Boys High School, and City College. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and spent two years in Europe. My dad was a very good athlete. He played amateur baseball in 1940s and ‘50s and was offered a try-out for the NY Giants. He played against Whitey Ford in those amateur games. He loved sports and was extremely competitive in-between the lines. Outside the lines, he was the nicest person you could ever meet. He played basketball at City College (now Baruch) at a time when Louis Pastina the main school won the NCAA and NIT tournament in the same teams scrimmaged, and he al- ents got married at St. Cecilia’s in year. Many in the medical and scientific fields were absolutely censored for not towing the Fauci (who has made a career out of being wrong) lockdown line. Dr. Galvin's view is shared by many. It seemed obvious by last April that people of a certain age and certain health issues should have been protected. Everybody else should have been back to work with some precautions. The CDC just released, "it is

fine to regularly use water and soap or detergent to clean surfaces, as there is ‘little scientific support for routine use of disinfectants in community settings, whether indoor or outdoor, to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission from fomites.’" That's an opposing conversation unheard by some a year ago, but not surprising to many. Heck, I even liked the comment worthy of a paid off politician that China eliminated the virus with no vaccine. Lisa Zoller

Common IRS Scams Escalate During Tax Season ByB yGille G i l lAnn e A nRabbin, n R a b bEsq., i n , ECIPP/US, s q . , C I PCIPP/E P/US

The 2020 federal income tax filing due date for individuals has been extended from April 15 to May 17, 2021. It’s a good time to remind taxpayers to be vigilant of common IRS impersonation scams frequently targeting the elderly, students, and immigrants that escalate during tax season. In IRS agent phone scams, fraudsters provide false names and IDs and spoof Caller ID so their calls appear to come from the IRS. Victims are threatened that they owe the IRS money and must pay up immediately. Sometimes a fake agent tells the victim she owes delinquent taxes and demands immediate payment by prepaid debit or gift card or wire transfer. The “agent” threatens that nonpayment will result in arrest, deportation, fines, license suspension, etc. In another variation, the

scammer tells the victim he can obtain a tax refund for her and requests banking and other personal information. He then uses this info to commit identity theft, or files for an actual refund but routes it to a fraudulent account. A scam targeting students involves an impersonator demanding payment for a fake “Federal Student Tax.” If the victim does not agree to pay, the impersonator threatens to notify police. Recently the IRS warned about a scam targeting “.edu” emails, generally held by staff or students at colleges and universities. Scam emails display the IRS logo and subject lines like “Tax Refund Payment” and "Recalculation of your tax refund payment" and request recipients to click a link and submit a form containing sensitive information. Other scams involving fake

emails and regarding refunds, returns or tax accounts contain a "temporary password" or "one-time password" to "access" relevant files. These files, however, are malicious; when a taxpayer accesses them, their computer is infected with malware. The imposter gains control of the computer or secretly downloads keylogger software that tracks keystrokes and passwords to sensitive financial accounts. If you get a call from someone asking for money and/or personal info and claiming to be from the IRS or the Treasury, don’t give out any information; hang up immediately. Report the call to the Treasury Inspector General through https://www. treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml or by calling 800-366-4484. Report the scam to the FTC through FTC.gov by filing a consumer complaint. If you think you might owe tax or

need tax assistance, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. In the event you receive a phishing email, don’t reply or provide any information. Forward it to phishing@irs.gov and then delete it. Don’t open attachments or click on links. If you think an identity thief may have your sensitive info, look into the IRS’s Identity Protection PIN program described at irs.gov/identity-theft-fraudscams/get-an-identity-protection-pin. The IP PIN prevents fraudsters from filing a tax return using your Social Security number. Impersonation schemes of all types continue to top the IRS’s Dirty Dozen annual list of scams. Stay alert; scams can occur any time of year, not just at tax time. The information contained in this column is provided for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal advice.

Sights On Glaucoma

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive optic neuropathy characterized by damage to the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer, both located at the back of the eye. But glaucoma is a disease of the front of the eye, or anterior chamber. The lens separates the eye into the anterior and posterior chambers. In glaucoma, aqueous humor, fluid that is found in the anterior chamber, is unable to drain from the anterior chamber, causing an elevation in intraocular pressure (IOP). Prolonged elevation of IOP causes damage to the optic nerve and retina, and if left untreated, glaucoma can lead to irreversible blindness. Aqueous humor is made by the sclera, or white part of the eye, and fills the anterior chamber, the space between the cornea and the lens. Normally, aqueous humor drains out of the anteri-

or chamber at the edges of the cornea. In glaucoma, the fluid cannot drain properly, and the pressure rises. Glaucoma is a highly inherited disease, being about 70% genetic, which is why it is more prevalent in certain racial and ethnic groups. Glaucoma is much more common in Black people, Latinos, and Asian Americans. It can be classified into two broad categories, open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and angle-closure glaucoma (ACG), the difference between them being the reason the aqueous humor is unable to drain. Adult-onset OAG is often asymptomatic early in the disease course, and about 50% of patients are unaware they have it. As OAG progresses, patients experience difficulty with peripheral vision, resulting in tunnel vision, and sometimes central vision is affected as well. This causes difficulty with reading, driving, and mobility. If left untreated, OAG will

eventually result in total blindness. In contrast, ACG involves sudden IOP elevation, which leads to blurry vision, halos around lights, eye pain, nausea and vomiting, and can rapidly cause blindness. ACG is an ophthalmologic emergency. Fortunately, OAG is the much more common form of glaucoma. Several medical conditions can predispose to glaucoma, including sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, diabetes, Lyme disease, sleep apnea, and migraine headaches. Certain infections can be associated with it as well, including herpes simplex virus, shingles, and syphilis. Prolonged use of steroids can cause OAG, and multiple medications are associated with ACG including antihistamines, antiparkinsonian medications, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines (i.e., Xanax), cocaine, and antidepressants. Treatment of glaucoma involves either decreasing the production of aqueous humor

or opening the drainage points around the cornea. This can be accomplished with eyedrops, oral medications, laser procedures, or eye surgery. Detection of early glaucoma is paramount to preventing blindness. While everyone should have an annual eye exam, that exam must include a slit lamp examination (after the eyes are numbed, the patient places his/her chin in the lamp device and the ophthalmologist measures IOP and uses the lamp to visualize the lens and retina). A simple vision test is not sufficient. This is particularly relevant to those who fall into the highrisk ethnic and racial groups, and most especially to anyone with a family history of glaucoma, given its highly inheritable nature. The Sun Always Shines Even if the sky is full of clouds, the sun still shines— we just don’t see it. The sun is the nourisher that causes all to thrive. This month at Ocean Bliss Yoga, we are focusing on one of the eight limbs of yoga “pratyahara” (Sanskrit word meaning “withdrawal of the senses”). It is the bridge between the external ones: ethical ways to live, self-discipline, yoga poses and breath control and the internal ones of concentration, meditation and enlightenment. “Pratyahara” enables us

to acknowledge all of our senses and come away from them from outside to the inner body. Once we do that, according to Pantajali, who created this classical yoga system, we are better able to get to relax the body, quiet the mind and feel connected to the universe. Our senses are constantly bombarded with information, especially through digital means and we can easily live in that external chaotic world. It can be overwhelming and hard to stop. Conscious effort is required here. Focusing the

mind to stop the sensory overload can work to come to a different sense of being. Occasionally turning off social media, TV, is a start. Notice how you feel when there is not a lot of distraction outside of yourself. At first you may be uneasy because it is definitely a habit to have it all out there. f we can get past that, it could be like relaxing into a hot tub— ahhhh. We don’t realize how tiring it is to have constant stimulation. Deep within is our peace, the personal and unique home of being. hat is our internal sun. All of the layers outside of this are like the clouds in the sky. Our inner light of peace is there whether there is a lot of clouding over it, just like the sun on a cloudy day. And this is what causes us to thrive as human beings—our true essence bringing ease physically, mentally and emotionally. I create different “mantras” that I repeat to myself. This month: “I am letting go of physical pain, I am letting go of mental anguish, I am letting

go of emotional trauma.” Other cloud layers, besides too much external sensory stimulation, is what we carry in our bodies from times in our lives, or from other lifetimes if you so believe, or from our ancestors. These also prevent us from that deep inner peace that is our human essence. Conscious effort to let these clouds dissipate reveal our individual sun center energy essence. So take some moments in this beautiful spring when the flowers start springing up from the sun’s energy, to sit back, take few deep breaths and release the sensory overload and the energy-zapping layers, finding your inner sun. May the rays of my sun illuminate my heart, enlighten my mind and nourish my soul. (Some thoughts on “pratyahara” are taken from an article at doyou.com) May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

In addition to offering ways to find jobs, The Rockaway Hotel partners, In Good Company and 7G will be launching a new program to help educate and empower those who

might be interested in working in hospitality. The Hospitality Way program, launching Monday, April 26, will be open to candidates with little to no experience and multi-year experience as well to help make a career in the field. This six-week program will include classes to help differentiate job positions and associated skills that comprise the hotel and restaurant businesses. There will be guest

speakers and industry leaders on hand to help make participants feel inspired to enter the hospitality workforce and be ready and confident to complete the interview process, and ultimately gain employment at the Rockaway Hotel or other partner hospitality sites. There will also be additional job fairs with local businesses to offer people more opportunities to enter the field. Applicants can visit TheHospitalityWay.com to learn more about the program and start the application progress. Having launched five venues across the city, including Bungalow Bar, and employing more than 60 people, those from In Good Hospitality have been making efforts to educate people about hospitality and provide jobs since 2010. The Hospitality Way will be a broader expansion of that effort. “Growing up in Rockaway, I was fortunate to have access to work in hospitality, never

thinking it was my eventual career choice, so we are so proud to be able to create a path in which others locally could see this as a career opportunity,” Terence Tubridy, Founder and Managing Partner of IGC Hospitality and Managing Partner of The Rockaway Hotel, said. “For years we have been training and educating the importance of hospitality and entrepreneurship with our employees,” Jeff Brosi, Founder and Managing Partner of IGC Hospitality and Managing Partner of The Rockaway Hotel, said. “We are now excited to help broaden that message with people who are seeking growth for their own careers. We feel education is a form of empowerment and when you add in hospitality, it leads to a recipe of success. The Hospitality Way program is set to openly educate to empower.” For more info, check out www.TheHospitalityWay.com

Wrestle Talk IMPACT WRESTLING By Eric Jayden

Impact Wrestling was founded on June 19, 2002 by Jeff and Jerry Jarrett and since then it has undergone different ownerships and different names from NWA Total Nonstop Action, TNA Impact to Impact Wrestling. The company is now owned by Anthem Sports based out of Ontario, Canada. Many of today’s top Professional Wrestling Superstars got their start or an opportunity to be seen with Impact Wrestling. Stars like AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode, Xavier Woods, Homicide, Santana and Ortiz got their start and were molded by the promotion. The promotion's product has suffered through changes in ownership and booking staff in addition to losing television deals that affected the product. But most recently the Impact product has seen a resurgence

with quality talent and storylines. Consistent storylines are the key factor that keep wrestling fans coming back to see the product. Fans are drawn to the product when the storylines are made interesting and not too cartoonish. In my opinion, professional wrestling fans should not be treated like they do not understand what is going on or better yet, treat them as they are valued fans and give them quality not quantity. Also, its new working partnership with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) will provide the fans with more unique matches and better content. The question of the week comes from Victor M. from Far Rockaway and he asked, "What are your thoughts about the

Big Show Paul Wright going to AEW?" Great question, Victor! Paul Wright is one of the top wrestlers in the world. He is a constant entertainer who understands good storyline, good character and good ring psychology. His decision to move on from the WWE to AEW for me was a good move. AEW will provide him an opportunity to

explore and redevelop who he is and what he wants to do. He will be an excellent addition to the AEW product. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Instagram @ badguysexiness and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week!
