Groins, Dunes and Sand Planned for 2022
By Katie McFadden
Like the weather, beach closures, jetty and reinforced dunes construction are subject to change. According to The Wave, “multiple sources” told them that city beaches would be closed from Beach 90th to Beach 116th on weekdays through the end of July. After contacting NYC Park to confirm this, a Parks Department spokesperson told The Rockaway Times that that was “inaccurate.” Parks added that they were “finalizing a closure plan” and would get back to us as soon as it was set. Inaccurate or not, the report prompted politicians and business owners to plead with Parks to hold off disrupting the area during the height of the summer season. As recently as late last week, The Army Corps spoke to The Rockaway Times. USACE Project Manager for the Coastal Restoration and Special Projects Branch Michael Oseback provided a quick rundown of the upcoming work. The latest groins to be completed were those on Beach 98th Street, Beach 102nd Street and Beach 108th Street. This summer, work will be ongoing. The staging area for the groin construction, where the boulders that are being used for the
project are stored, will remain at Beach 116th Street. The contractor will be finishing up a groin already under construction at Beach 92nd Street with an estimated completion in July, and a groin at Beach 110th Street, with an estimated completion in August. Come the fall, the contractor will bring work back east with construction taking place on the groins between Beach 38th Street and Beach 43rd Street. This work takes place Monday through Friday. USACE will also begin Contract 2 of its plans for Rockaway, which entails a new reinforced dune from Beach 9th to Beach 149th and sand replenishment. The contractor for this work Michels Corporation will begin mobilizing at the end of May at Beach 147th Street. “We’re going to roll right through summer,” Project Manager Michael Oseback said. Construction of the reinforced dune, which entails sheet pile and an armor stone core that will later be covered in sand, will be taking place between Beach 149th and into the Beach 130s through September. Dredging work will take place in the fall to begin sand replenishment, which is expected to start on the eastern end of the peninsula. Beachgoers may notice the dredging equipment on the horizon starting in September. Again, please note, all of this work is subject to schedule changes as weather can cause delays. NYC Parks is expected to provide updates on how the beaches will operate around this construction and will provide updates on any possible beach closures while work is ongoing. “Public safety is our number one priority,” Oseback said. As for weekday closures and exactly where and when these will take place, stay tuned.

***** As usual, it was a tough task selecting a Top 30 in the annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest. Our selections are on Pages 14, 15, and 16. Unfortunately some great shots couldn’t make the cut because the resolution was too low. In fact, we had to make some last minute choices because a few photos we picked lost quality as we enlarged them. The Top 30 get enlarged to poster-size and are put up on display on the boardwalk. If the resolution is too low the photos become pixelated and aren’t really suited for the boardwalk. Congratulations to the Top 30. Oh, and five Honorable Mention photos will be on display at the ferry dock. Look for the photos just before Memorial Day.
***** There was speculation online that the beaches, from Beach 90th to Beach 116th would be closed weekdays through July. We asked Parks. Their quick response: this “was not accurate. We are finalizing a closure plan and will get back to you once it’s confirmed.” And we’ll get back you. ***** Want to do some good? Give, if you can. blood drive in honor of Walter Blum will be held Sunday at St. Francis de Sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. ***** Beach 134 and Cronston Avenue will soon be known as Clare Droesch Way. The corner will be named after the Hall of Fame basketball player and person on Saturday, June 4 at 11 a.m. And Clare will also be remembered at the St. Francis de Sales Schoolyard. The Women's Open League will now be the Clare Droesch Open League. And on the men’s side, The Men's Open League will now be the Tim Klein Open League.
***** Do You Doo-Wop? The Broad Channel American Legion is hosting two great groups doing doo-wop, Motown and more on Saturday, June 4, 8 to midnight. There’ll be beer, wine, sangria, soda, hot dogs, coffee and cake at the BC Legion Hall, 209 Cross Bay Blvd. Call Carol 917-9300546 or Pat 718-634-4147 for tickets/info. $60 per person. The Broad Channel Beautification-Spring Planting Day is this Saturday, May 14, all along the Cross Bay Blvd medium. Flowers will be distributed from 9 a.m. to noon. All are welcome to come out to make BC even more beautiful! ***** The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing a Stewardship Plan for the East and West Pond area of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at Gateway Na-
tional Recreation Area and your feedback is needed. Through this planning effort, NPS will work with the community to develop strategies for resource protection, education and interpretation, and visitor experience at this beloved natural area. NPS is currently seeking feedback from visitors and stakeholders on the plan. Join NPS for a virtual open house to discuss the plan on May 17, 2022. Members of the public are also welcome to provide feedback through the Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website through June 7. ***** More sports stuff: Beach Channel High School Coach Roseanne D' Augusta and volleyball players deserve a big round of applause team for earning 8th seed in the 2022 Spring Playoffs. Their first-round match will be held Wednesday, May 11 5 p.m. at Beach Channel. This is a newly formed team with a new coach and a new Athletic Director, Norah Marley.

Holocaust Remembrance Day
The community commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day had several emotional climaxes, none more moving when the daughter of Ruth Pagirsky, Regina Skyer, came on stage to help comfort the speaker paying tribute to her mother. Ruth, a member of Temple Beth, who recently passed away and the voice of the Holocaust in the Rockaways, made it her life's work to ensure this trage-
dy is never forgotten. The May 1 event was held at Temple Beth El and was also sponsored by West End Temple, the Jewish War Veterans and the Rockaway Jewish community. Following the singing of Ani Ma'amin, a song professing faith in the coming of the Messiah that has become associated with the Holocaust, was led by Cantor Jeffery Wolk and Cantor Dennis Waldman. The opening remarks were delivered by Rabbi Matt Carl of Temple Beth El and while Rabbi Rebecca Epstein of West End Temple was unable to attend due to COVID, her remarks were delivered by Cantor Gabriel Lehrman. Steven Wagner then led the audi-
ence in the Hymn of the Partisans, a song that captures the mood of the resistance movements in Europe during World War II. Stuart Rauch of West End Temple provided musical accompaniment for the evening, while the teenagers of Temple Beth El: Zachary Finkelstein, Harrison Rosenhaus, Pauline Litvak and Rebecca Tarnarider served as the emcees as well as performers in a cantata, "Yizkor, Their Memory Lives On." Six memorial candles were lit by local family members whose parents were Holocaust survivors. Presentations were given by Talia Berg, the great-granddaughter of Holocaust survivors and veterans whose grandparents are members of Congregation Ohav Zedek, Madison Lander of West End Temple, a teacher who spoke of a recent anti-Semetic incident in her school and Dr. Michael Goldberg, whose parents are members of Temple Beth El. Michael is a psychologist who spoke of his experiences with survivors
and their families. But the purpose of the evening was driven home as Michelle Neuringer, a soloist, began speaking about Ruth Pagirsky of blessed memory. In the days following her rescue, then known as Ruth Wachner, Ruth connected with an American Jewish soldier David Tanzman, whose daughter Robin Tanzman also spoke at the ceremony. Ruth's worldview following her liberation was that she would never marry or bring children into such a world. Fortunately, Ruth and David bonded and went on to have beautiful families and a quality of life. Seeing Michelle overcome by emotion in retelling Ruth's story, Ruth's daughter Regina joined everyone on stage, reinforcing the moment and showing that hatred did not win. Given the times we are living in, having the young people run the Holocaust program made the event both relevant and meaningful.

In the Principal’s Office: Chris Sharbach/St. Francis de Sales By Dan Guarino
Each day on their way to classes, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy students, in neat uniforms, pass under an inscription from their school’s saintly namesake. “Be who you are and be that well.” “That’s kind of the guiding principle here at the school,” explains Principal Christopher Sharbach. “God gives us all special skills and talents. All we ask is that you give us your best.” Each day he makes sure students, educators and staff, have what they need to be their best. No detail is too small for his patient, calm attention. “St. Francis was a doctor of the church,” he notes. Indeed, Francis is one of 36 saints whose doctrinal writings hold special authority in the Roman Catholic Church. Born in 1567 at Chateau de Sales, near Geneva, Switzerland, he earned a doctorate in law, went on to follow the religious life, and later became Bishop of Geneva. In 1608, his most famous book, “Introduction to the Devout Life,” was written not just for the clergy and religious, but to reach ordinary lay people. Principal Sharbach and his complement of 32 full-time teachers, 18 support staff and ten Department of Education special education providers are dedicated to following Francis’ example. Quoting the academy’s mission statement, he says, “Our school family is committed to academic excellence, Christian service to others, and to providing a Christ-centered, safe and engaging environment where students can grow spiritually and academically.” Opened in 1913, St. Francis has been a Belle Harbor fixture ever since. The original school building is still in use, along with others added in the 1940s and 1960s. “This has always been a strong school,” Sharbach says. “And a

large school, with about 700 students at times.” Covering pre-K to 8th grade, it now boasts 621 pupils. “We had 512 when I became principal.” A NET tv network segment last year spotlighting St. Francis, noting, amidst diminishing enrollments and schools closing, they’re bucking the trend. Their numbers are increasing. They even have a waiting list at various grade levels. “I come from a family of educators,” Sharbach said. “Father, aunts, uncles, grandfathers. So, it was always there.” Though he went to college for accounting, after doing several internships, he says, “I found accounting to be boring. It just doesn’t have the
same level of fulfillment.” Seeing how much his family gave as teachers, he turned to education. “I taught for five years at St. Rose of Lima, teaching 7th and 8th graders, Math and Science.” At the same time, he was able to learn about Rockaway and build a foundation that would serve him later. After a stint as Assistant Principal at Douglaston’s Divine Wisdom Catholic Academy, he took over at St. Francis in 2013. “It was a difficult time, right after Hurricane Sandy.” As he got the school on solid footing and oversaw building and classroom technology improvements, enrollment increased. As
St. Francis de Sales Academy was thriving, another challenge arose: the pandemic. It was yet another test challenge for Sharbach, the school, and the community. Sharbach says it helps that St. Francis can draw upon a unique community. “One thing that makes us really special is our sense of community. That goes out to the Rockaway community as well. This is a family. We really stress that here.” Citing events like their Easter Egg Hunt and Polar Express Night, he points to very strong family involvement. “We have parents who are very helpful. They really make things run.” With students ranging from 3 years-old to age 14 going from grade to grade together, it’s also not unusual for siblings, older and younger, to attend school together. “The majority of families are here with us for at least eight to nine years. We’ve had some families here for 20 years. We have some 4th generation students here. We’ve had grandparents here.” That sense of community spreads throughout the school and beyond. Older students will often help out younger ones. When two new families arrived from war-torn Ukraine, some students gave them their toys because they knew their new classmates had none. In the neighborhood, Sharbach says people ask him “How’s your little Charlie?”, not just “’How’s your boy?’ “I guess any principal today wears many hats. Our job at St. Francis is to make our children academically strong, emotionally strong, physically strong and spiritually strong.” Before setting out to attend the details of the new school day, even helping a teacher with an automobile issue, he reflects, “I’ve been blessed, blessed that I’ve been in Rockaway for 14 out of my 17 years as an educator.”

TOP 30 !
More than a thousand photos were submitted to the annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest. Eleven judges (Rockaway Times, Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy, NYC Ferry, and NYC Parks) had a tough time agreeing on the top choices. After several rounds, using anonymous voting and process of elimination through votes, we finally settled on a Top 30. These photos will be enlarged to poster-size and be put on display on the boardwalk around Memorial Day. For now, we’re keeping the selections anonymous. Maybe that’s your pic? Keep your eye out for when the photographers are revealed.

Your Tenant Privacy Rights
ByB yGille G i l lAnn e A nRabbin, n R a b bEsq., i n , ECIPP/US, s q . , C I PCIPP/E P/US If you are a tenant in a “smart” building – one that has an access system that uses digital technology, like an RFID card, a mobile phone application, biometric identifier, or key fob to grant entry – your landlord has the ability to collect personal data about you, like your comings and goings, socializing and frequency of guests, and patterns of work. Until recently, your landlord could do whatever they wanted with this data. State and federal laws provide tenants with various protections, including anti-discrimination rights, credit check protections, procedures governing the eviction process, and the right to
“quiet enjoyment” of their unit. Now a NYC law passed last year, which will be enforced beginning in January 2023, gives tenants new data
privacy rights. The Tenant Data Privacy Act applies to data used for access to (or within) a building. A building’s video system not used to provide entry is not subject to the law. The law requires landlords to provide tenants with a privacy policy written in “plain language” that includes information about data collection, disclosure, safeguards, retention periods, and what happens if there’s a data breach. The landlord must obtain express consent from tenants to collect access data and collect only the minimum amount necessary. The law allows only certain types of data to be collected including name, apartment number, lease term info, building amenities the
tenant has access to, contact info, passcodes, and biometric information if used. Landlords generally may not collect information on a tenant’s use of utilities (beyond monthly usage) or internet. Generally, landlords are prohibited from using smart system access data for purposes beyond allowing entry, to limit the time of entry or departure, or for harassment or eviction purposes. They also may not use the data to track a user off premises, their frequency and time of system use, or relationship status, and are prohibited from requiring a tenant to use a smart access system instead of a key. Minors’ access information may not be collected without express parental or guardian consent. A landlord may not sell, lease, or disclose collected data except under specified circumstances (like cooperating with law enforcement). After 90 days from collection, withdrawal of consent or moving out, the data must ei-
Page 17
ther be destroyed or anonymized. If your landlord sells your access information in violation of your tenant privacy rights, you can sue them under the TDPA individually or as part of a class. Successful parties can seek damages and attorney’s fees. An aggrieved tenant may have recourse under other applicable laws as well. Many residential buildings have converted to smart access systems, which tenants typically like because they provide convenience and added security. NYC’s law is one of the first laws nationwide to regulate data collection from residential multifamily smart buildings. It is part of a growing body of laws conferring personal data protection rights. ***** The information contained in this column is provided for informational purposes only and should not be construed as legal advice.

Bugalou Rides Again Rich Strike won the Kentucky Derby as a long shot but you can bet on another horse that's a sure thing next Friday.... Real Young and Lazy Horse at St Camillus Springman Hall on Friday, May 20 7 p.m. This is another one that has been postponed multiple times during COVID, and I hope after our two most recent shows were also postponed for other reasons, that you are all ready for a break out night. They are very much looking forward to their return to Rockaway, which has become a 2nd home for them. A spirited crowd witnessed as they closed the boardwalk concessions season at Rippers last September and of course their previous appearance at Bugalou with The THE BAND Band was a great night. They will be bringing
it with Neil Young classics like Cinnamon Girl, Southern Man, Tonight's the Night, Powderfinger, and Rockin' In the Free World. Opening the show now will be the Sun Dogs. This is the newest venture for Steve Harris, who previously led Dead Mile Dance and who famously entertained at the annual Featherston St Patrick's Day Party for many years. They will be a great lead in to Real Young and may have a special surprise in store. Tickets are $30 and available now at www.bugaloumusic.com It's always more fun with friends so put your group together and save money. Group tickets must be purchased via email to bugaloumusic@gmail.com and discounts available through 5/17. It’s time to Bugalou.

The Foodie Report: Goody's
By Scott Ruscillo
Hope all my foodie friends are well, we have some nasty viruses and flu’s going around town. I was extremely sick for 12 days and still not 100% better after a horrible flu. The frustrating part was all I heard from urgent care and everyone else was Covid-covid-covid. I was so angry since it seems many including urgent care offices seem to forget there are still other serious illnesses out there besides for Covid! Well, now al-
most fully recovered I am getting my appetite back and Goody’s was such a great start since its food is so full of flavor and spices it has got my taste buds fired up again. Let’s chat about some of Rockaways best comfort food. If you have yet to visit Goody’s, you’re missing out. Goody’s is located in Arverne and has been cooking up flavor packed West Indian food for over 25 years. The food is freshly prepared each day and cooked to perfection with a boatload of Caribbean spices. The spices and flavors are what make Goody’s not your average BBQ joint by any means. As a great basic dish the BBQ chicken is so good, I usually get a large bbq chicken with rice and veggies and don’t forget the oxtail gravy over the rice. This is a great dish for a newbie or advanced foodie. If you are more adventurous then Oxtail may be a great option to try if you want something unique and different. The Oxtail dish is one of Goody’s staples and its top seller in my opinion. Oxtail is a cattle’s tail and it’s a very popular dish in various parts of the world for centuries. It used to specifically be the tail of an OX, how-
ever now it can be the tail from any cattle. This dish is slow cooked and or braised since it tends to be fatty. Oxtail is rich in collagen, a vital protein for our body's growth and repair. Oxtail is high in fat so an ideal energy source for a Ketogenic, Paleo, or Carnivore Diet. With over 70% fat, Oxtail is ideal for anyone on a high fat / low carb or no-carb diet. Oxtail has also become quite popular in recent years; its price has also increased as demand increases. Goody’s has so many options and will please even the pickiest eater. Various meats, veggies, burgers, ribs and we can’t forget their awesome Jamaican patties. The jerk chicken with rice and beans is a must try. This dish is cooked up so well I usually have it at least once a month for lunch and it never gets boring. They also offer curry chicken with rice and beans, steamed veggies, plantains, mac and cheese. Both the jerk and curry chicken always fall-off-thebone and have the perfect complement of seasonings. Always remember to ask for extra sauce across the rice or mac and cheese, you won’t be disappointed. The steamed veggies and plantains are some of the best
and go well as a side with any meat dish offered. The sauces used at Goody’s are usually simmering all day and the flavors from the meats melt into the sauce to create that deliciously impressive taste. For a first time visit, I would recommend the jerk chicken with vegetables and rice. This is a standard starter dish but also one of the best they have to get started with. As always, don't forget to continue supporting our local businesses. Covid may be mostly behind us but as many know Restaurants are now plagued with very high costs for ingredients and meats. Take time to post your favorite dishes on social media and show your support by giving feedback to the business owner or manager. Restaurant owners cannot make improvements if customers fail to speak up! Don’t forget to follow my food blogging on social media, you can find me on Instagram or Facebook under my name. Stay well, stay humble and support local. Goody’s is located at 7018 Amstel Blvd in Arverne Queens 718-318-9616

Brain Surgery Brain surgery has come a long way. Evidence of brain surgery goes as far back as the Neolithic period (4500 B.C.) when the first known documented surgery was performed by making a hole in the skull by removing a portion of bone, a process called trepanation. This is still done today to remove deadly pressure on the brain, for instance to drain a subdural hematoma (bleeding on the brain) that forms as a result of head trauma. This is called a burr hole and the procedure is quite improved since it was first performed by cavemen.
Page 35
THURSDAY, May 12, 2022
Not too long ago, however, brain surgery had a barbaric side. Frontal lobotomy was a procedure that was developed to treat uncontrollably violent or emotional patients. First performed in Europe, frontal lobotomy was popularized in the US in the 1940s. In 1942, Dr. Walter Freeman published the results of his first 200 lobotomies. He wrote that 63% were improved, 23% showed no improvement, and 14% were worsened or died. He developed a technique that didn’t require general anesthesia. The patient was shocked into a coma, then a sharp
instrument similar to an ice pick was hammered through the skull above the eyes to sever the nerves connecting the frontal lobe to the emotion-controlling centers of the inner brain. Dr. Freeman claimed that the procedure “worked”. From 1937 to 1967 tens of thousands of people underwent lobotomies. The side effects of lobotomy were often horrendous and included incontinence, prolonged vomiting, loss of emotions and personality, and loss of impulse control. Despite the discovery of lithium to treat serious mental illness in 1949, lobotomies were performed up until 1967. In that year, Dr. Freeman performed a third lobotomy on Helen Mortensen, who died after the procedure of a brain hemorrhage. After that case, Dr. Freemen was barred from performing surgery. Neuroscience has evolved tremendously in the 50 or so years since Dr. Freeman, and with amazing results. For example, a procedure known as deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been developed to treat previously untreatable conditions such as seizure disorders and severe depres-
sion that are unresponsive to medical treatment. DBS has also made great strides in treating severe Parkinson’s disease. DBS involves the delivery of electrical stimulation to deep brain structures via implanted electrodes connected to an implanted generator (in the chest). DBS has become more routine over the last 20 years. In 2004, a review was published in Cell and Tissue Research that stated “The success of the therapy largely depends on the selection of the appropriate candidate patient and on the precise implantation of the stimulation electrode”. Epilepsy affects more than 50 million people worldwide, with about 20% being drug-resistant. A 2017 study published in Epilepsia found that DBS reduced seizures among those suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy by 46 to 95% in half of all the patients studied. Yes, neurosurgery sure has come a long way from the days of cavemen and frontal lobotomies. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Humor the Humanness When we decide and feel that we want certain people in our lives and we realize that our family members are our family members, at some point we have to come to peace with certain things. Some things will not change. Some behaviors will not change. Some core things about people will never change - has to do with
our natures, what we have learned along the way and the experiences we have had - both pleasurable and traumatic. Most of what we fret about in the big scheme of things is rather insignificant. So to give it attention and energy takes away from attention and energy we can be giving to other good things. Re-
Help Wanted – Non CDL and CDL Drivers
cently it occurred to me to lighten up and to humor other people just being human. I always have to remind myself that most often what someone says or does has nothing to do with me but rather about who they are and what they have been through. It is relief to realize this. We’ve all heard “don’t sweat the small stuff ” - a phrase overused but there is wisdom in it. So, I wanted to remind myself that some things don’t really mean that much. And then it’s getting easier to move through things that don’t quite feel right. Sometimes we have to express what we feel wronged about; sometimes we leave them unsaid. In any event, sometimes I have to laugh at how “human” we really are. And I can tell you lightening up in this way has allowed me to see the humor in the small and big things. I also have come to realize - oh yes, some realizations I guess come with age - that sometimes we have to move ahead and lessen what doesn’t feel right, even if that means less interaction or less time with certain people. And trying to minimize
the meaning we think certain words or behaviors have, lightening up and maybe laughing it off. When we are happy and whole, we can do great things for others. Ask yourself if you are happy and whole. If the answer is no, ask yourself why not? And then spread your attention and energy to things and people that would make you feel that way. More time with people who nourish us and less time with people who don’t. It is a matter of taking care of ourselves. Take care of yourself and everyone around you will be happier! And really not taking people just being human so much to heart - not taking everything so seriously: humor the humanness. Laugh. I have found this gift in this past year. Just laugh it off if you can. “Laughter is an instant vacation.” (Milton Berle) “Laughing is good exercise. It’s like jogging on the inside.” (Kurt Vonnegut) May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Food and Beverage Insider: The Cheese Guide By Natalie Crooks
Cheese is, by popular opinion, one of the best foods ever. A lot of people agree with that sentiment, cheese seems to be almost universally loved, even by those whose bodies can’t tolerate it. If you grew up in the United States, there is a good chance your first exposure to cheese was American cheese or something similar that came out of a Ziploc bag. Let me state, there is nothing wrong with liking American cheese, its many people’s choice for burgers and grilled cheeses, but the world of cheese is vast and complex and branching out to try new things is totally worth a stomachache. Cheese comes in many different textures from soft and runny like burrata to hard like parmesan. Soft cheeses usually have
less aging time, which gives them milder flavor and harder cheeses have less moisture which is why they’re often crumbled or grated. One common mistake people make with cheese is eating it right out of the fridge, cheese should be enjoyed at room temperature and some are even better warm. Baked brie is a popular dish and it is super easy to make, just pop it in the oven for about 20 minutes and top it with jam, nuts, honey, anything you want! When cheese is too cold you don’t get as much flavor out of it, so if you’re serving up a cheese board for friends, I recommend taking the cheese out of the fridge at least an hour before you plan to serve it. Cheese can be made from cow’s milk, sheep’s milk, goat’s milk, or any combination of the three. Cow’s milk cheese tends to
be grassier and nuttier and often more mild than other cheeses. Some popular cow’s milk cheeses include cheddar, parmesan, and brie. Sheep’s milk cheese can be gamey and range from sweet to tangy. Sheep’s milk cheeses have higher butterfat content and will sweat when left out of the fridge for a while, common examples are pecorino, Manchego, and Roquefort. Goat’s milk cheese is often tart and earthy and can have very strong aroma, but some examples are milder. Chevre, Humboldt Fog, and Valençay are common examples of goat cheese. Blue cheese is one of the most polarizing cheeses out there. It can be made from cow, goat, or sheep and gets its intense flavor from the addition of cultures of the mold Penicillium. It is completely safe to consume and tends to be sharp and salty. It’s popular-
ly used in salads and stuffed into olives for martinis, but many blue cheeses are fabulous on their own. It may not be the best cheese for beginners but for many people becomes an acquired taste over time. Popular examples are gorgonzola, stilton, and Cabrales. Whether a beginner or a self-proclaimed connoisseur, there are so many different types of cheeses out there that everyone is bound to find one they enjoy. It can elevate almost any dish to create a richer and more complex flavor profile. Those with a sweet tooth can go for brie with jam or honey. Salt-lovers can add pecorino to their favorite pastas for added flavor or ricotta salata to salads. Talk to your local cheese monger and try your hand at a cheeseboard next time you have friends over, you might find something you love.

KING TOUTS INNOVATION IN EDUCATION
On Monday, U.S. Congress candidate Paul King participated in a press conference where New York State gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin announced his Students First education agenda. King took the opportunity to describe his plans for innovation in education. The press conference took place outside Success Academy in Springfield Gardens. Describing himself as a “product of the system” who received a great public school education at PS 114, JHS 180 and Beach Channel High School, King expressed concern that too few of today’s students will get the same opportunity. “Students – and teachers– are trapped in a failing system that delivers unacceptable academic progress year after year after year. We need innovation and choice to break out of this trap.” In addition to charter schools and magnet schools, King emphasized targeted online educa-
tion as a way to supplement the classroom and close the achievement gap. King based his online learning ideas on his real-world experience in business. He teaches live online classes and has designed several self-paced courses for professionals. One of his clients is also a nationwide provider of K-12 online education. “We learned during the pandemic that for most students, online learning is a terrible substitute for the classroom. However, it can be a great tool to make sure students don’t fall behind when the classroom experience lets them down.” Mr. Zeldin is the leading Republican candidate to take on Governor Kathy Hochul. Mr. King is the likely Republican and Conservative challenger to Gregory Meeks in CD5. Questions about the King campaign can be directed to Margaret Powers at president@paulkingforcongress.com.

Life With Our
“Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
By Kami-Leigh Agard
To say that born-and-bred “Rockaway Irish girl,” Patricia “Pat” Harvey naturally exudes the maternal instinct would be an understatement. Harvey, who was born at Peninsula Hospital, has lived in this town all her life; raising her five children, including 28-year-old autistic gentle giant, Jason. This past Sunday was Mother’s Day, and when I saw Pat’s Facebook post about her youngest, Jeanette’s college graduation commencement, I got goose bumps. What a fitting gift to a truly deserving mom. I only have one child, 13-year-old Soa, who has autism; and oftentimes I’m in awe of how Pat raises her five children, giving each their spotlight as special gifts to this world. So, here’s to
Spotlight On Local Autism Beach Mom—Patricia Harvey you, Pat! Yes, “as a parent, you just do what you have to do.” When Jason was born, Pat already had Nicole and Anthony, who’s Jason’s senior by 10 months, thus making the two boys “Irish twins.” When Jason was 18 months old, she instinctively knew something was different. “He had a couple of words, and was usually happy and smiling, but suddenly a blank look appeared on his face,” Pat shared. She did go through NYC’s Early Intervention, which placed Jason in a program with therapy services. A neurologist prescribed him several medications, which according to Pat had the totally opposite effect; so, she took him off, and steeled herself to be Jason’s advocate despite the lack of support and answers. When asked how she balanced it all, while raising her other four children, Pat answered, “The best
advice I ever got from a doctor was ‘Bring Jason into your world, don’t go into his.’ Jason was going to have to learn how to adapt to his surroundings, and because I did have other children, I did not want them to resent him. So, like any other family, I acknowledged each child as an individual, giving them their moment to shine, letting them know that they are just as special as Jason. And with Jason, I did not focus on what he couldn’t do. I acknowledged the things that he did do, like learning how to swim, operating the VCR, helping with household chores— and I showed him how proud I was of his accomplishments.” As for when people tell Pat, “Oh, I give you so much credit. It must be so hard on you,” she’s not having it. “I’m not looking for anyone’s pity. He’s my son, and I’m a proud mom of five, equally special children. “They are still hard times. I’m not
gonna lie and say, ‘I wake up every day happy-go-lucky.’ I sometimes reflect on Jason’s future, compared to Anthony, who’s only 10 months older. However, I just tell myself that Jason is just going to have a different path—not less than—just different. I’m going to be raising him for the rest of my life, while the others go off on their own with their careers, their own families. However, I always acknowledge the hard work they each do to achieve their goals, so they know they all matter,” Pat said. And Pat, they indeed all matter, and know that you do, too! I talk about autism to open doors into the reality of our lives as caregivers, and to build understanding, acceptance and appreciation of our special children. Self-Aware Seeker Dear Enchantress, What can I say, I'm bored, and I think I'm boring. I feel I should be doing something important, instead I spend my time focusing on getting a boyfriend. I hate watching myself be clingy and weird. It's like I need constant reinforcement that the guy likes me, and I get so insecure! I'm not generally an insecure woman. I usually am loudmouthed and opinionated. At work, I am seen as a force and everyone sees me as a get it done type of gal. In dating, it's like I'm a mess and I'm 15 years old. Yuck. How can I make my life fuller, so I don't depend on a man to keep me happy? Or maybe how do I date better? It's all so confusing and I do a lot of writing and I cannot seem to stop trying to fix this problem.

You need to have confidence to keep learning about yourself with real life situations. You can date as a way to feel your feelings, and see who and when the right man is interested in living life that way alongside you. Practice pushing your edge by revealing what is going on in your head in real time, and in connection with a man. Also, know that you have many "parts" of who you are, and that's what makes you, you. WRESTLING NEWS & IS ROMAN REIGNS LEAVING? By Eric Jayden
So, the Big News coming out of the World of Professional Wrestling are the rumors and reports that current WWE Superstar Roman Reigns may be leaving the WWE. Now, where did these rumors come from? Well, from Roman Reigns himself! Yes, during a recent house show in Trenton, New Jersey Roman took to the microphone and addressed the crowd by saying that "I have been here a couple of times in the past 10 years and I'm starting to work into a new phase in my career, and I honestly don't know if I'll be back here again" Roman, went on to say "I just wanna say thank you for all the years of support." Now, does that mean that after his contract is up, that he will not resign with the WWE? Or, is he done with professional wrestling completely?
This has wrestling fans lighting up the internet and many speculating if Roman Reigns will show up at another wrestling promotion. Reports have been circulating, that AEW Owner Tony Khan has apparently offered as much as $10 mil to sign the WWE Superstar. Now, in my opinion right now all we can do is speculate. If the reports of Tony Khan offering $10 million are true, can the WWE counter that offer and how high of an offer are they willing to extend? We will continue to keep you updated as this story continues to develop. We have an injury to report as we have learned that WWE Superstar Charlotte Flair has suffered a "fracture of the radius" coming out of her match at WrestleMania, where she dropped the WWE Smackdown Women's Championship to Ronda Rousey in a 'I Quit Match." At this time, we do not know how long this injury will
keep Charlotte Flair out of wrestling but we will keep you updated. The Question of the Week comes from Naleen J. in Rockaway Park and she asked, "I'm thinking of starting training to become a Pro Wrestler, any recommendations or advice you can give me?' Naleen, first and foremost, make sure you have a secondary profession you can fall back on, just in case wrestling doesn't work out for any reason. Second, find a reputable school
you can attend and be prepared to train harder than you ever have trained because the training is not easy and it takes time to develop the skills needed to be successful. But, the key will be dedication. Wrestling is tough on the body and soul. Really, think about what you will be getting into and search deep in yourself to see if this is really something you want to do. Have a Question or a Comment please send it to eavil183@yahoo. com and have a Great Weekend!
