Getting Somewhere Fast Kerri Gallagher Flies To First In Famous Race By Michael Leboff
Kerri Gallagher picked a great time to set a personal record. The Belle Harbor native went wire-to-wire to take the gold medal in the Olympic Development Women’s Mile at the Penn Relays. She came across the line at 4:34, a full three seconds ahead of second-place finisher Sheila Reid, a former NCAA Cross Country champion and Canadian Olympian. Her average speed topped 13 miles per hour for the race. Gallagher, who races for Team Oiselle and the New York Athletic Club, credits her coach Matt Centrowitz for pushing her to the front of the pack. “It was a combination of strategy and good timing,” Gallagher said of her win at the Relays. “My coach has a great intuition and so much experience as an athlete and a coach at a national and world class level. I think he recognized that in previous years I’ve taken myself out of this race by running from the back and so he pushed me to go out fast and run to my strengths. I was lining up against some very talented
women, so going out hard was no guarantee but it worked out in the end for me.” Following her success at the Penn Relays, Gallagher’s focus now shifts to a busy schedule of races leading up to the 2015 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships taking place at the end of June in Eugene, Oregon. This Friday, May 8th, Gallagher will be in Eugene to compete in the 1500M at the annual Oregon Twilight. Following that, she will head to Los Angeles for the Oxy High Performance Meet. After the Oxy Gallagher heads north to Canada for a few invitationals before heading back to New York for her final tune up before the US Championships. And while qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro remains the ultimate goal, the former Bishop Kearney standout is remaining focused on immediate goals. “Olympic Trials are definitely on my mind,” Gallagher said. “But that is a long term goal for now. There are a few steps along Continued on page 35

The Rockaway Groan I guess I stiffed my kids. We didn’t do much on the birthdays or graduations or other milestone events. Birthday cake? Here, have an Oreo. Every several years of getting nothing more than a Happy Birthday in the morning, one of them might say, how about something? I never have anything, no parties, nothing. It wasn’t really a whine as much as a simple declarative
statement. I’d say alright, fine, get some friends, I’ll take you to the movies. Half the time, they’d say there’s nothing good playing, so forget it. And I’d forget it. I know, bah humbug, scrooge. The truth of the matter is I was trying to spare friends and my siblings from having to endure what are by definition, lame events. You’re gonna tell me you’ve had fun at a kid’s birthday party? And
those confirmations, whoa, they can get wild. Birthdays are like trophies: they’ve lost their meaning. I mean, the killer is a party for a one year old. We know the kid is still a blob who doesn’t have a clue so why are we supposed to celebrate and make it a special day? I guess it’s really just a way for parents to throw a party about how they survived the whole year with no sleep. I wish they’d just say so. Then we’d get them the present instead of the kid who won’t care what color his onesie is. Of course the real reason I never threw lame parties for my kids is because I didn’t want others to reciprocate. Especially people who live off the peninsula. If I invite them, they’re going to invite me. It’s like signing a contract you instantly regret. And you know when they reciprocate, you will hate them for their timing. We live and enjoy Rockaway for five months a year. The other seven months we endure. It’s the price of paradise. Those who don’t live here just don’t appreciate how those five months are ours. We do not want to leave. Even when we vacation during those five good months we are happy to get back. If you vacation during the summer you cannot impress anyone here, no matter how spectacular
your trip was. You vacation somewhere warm in the winter and people here have extreme envy. They want you to tell them more so they might feel a wave of vicarious warmth. You vacation in the summer and no one cares. You might have gone somewhere amazing but you missed Rockaway. It’s like amazing with an asterisk. We are protective of our five measly months. We do not want anything intruding on summer glory. Which brings us back to those horrible communion and graduating from kindergarten parties and why they backfire. The people you invited eventually reciprocate. And they kill you with their timing. You might be invited to a party or barbecue at a Hamptons mansion but you will not be happy. You will be stuck in traffic both ways. You will wonder what you’re missing back in Rockaway. You utter The Rockaway Groan: I gotta leave Rockaway for this? I gotta leave Rockaway to sit in someone’s backyard? Moral of the story: don’t invite people. To anything. And you might do what I’m gonna do: I’m sending this column to everyone I’ve ever met who doesn’t live in Rockaway.

Playland Motel on Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 97th and Beach 98th is opening for the season on May 15. The new management showed awesome promise the day of the Taste of Rockaway offering an endless supply of delicious offerings. Give the place a try, soon ! ***** The Swim Strong Foundation is holding its 3rd annual Water Safety Awareness Day on Saturday, May 16 at Far Rockaway High School. Swim lessons, CPR training, water safety workshops and health and nutrition workshops are all on tap. The hours are 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Registration for the different events will take place at the schools. For more info, check out swimstrongfoundation.org ***** We liked Frank Chimera’s suggestion to call the cement boardwalk, the Beachwalk. But we got an email from a reader who said the Beverly Hillbillies and Jethro Bodine come to mind. Jethro would call it the Seament

Walk. For those of you too young (or too old) to remember, Jethro used to call the swimming pool, the cement (pronounced sea-ment) pond. ***** How about Kerri Gallagher?! The local speedster, daughter of John and Patty Gallagher of Belle Harbor, ran a 4:34 mile at the Penn Relays. How fast is that? That’s more than 13 miles per hour, a fast speed for someone on a bicycle! ***** The Beach 116th Partnership is holding a slogan/tag line contest. The famous shopping corridor of Beach 116th Street is looking for something catchy that will remind people that the street is on a big upswing. Visit their website and submit your idea: www.discoverbeach116.com ***** Where’s Meeks? Our congressman, Gregory Meeks, sure seems to be impersonating Assemblywoman Michelle Titus (aka Michelle Absent-titus) lately. He held a press conference in support of reactivating the Rocka-
way Branch line. That was two years ago. Six months ago he said people shouldn’t have to repay FEMA if they were inadvertently given an overpayment. Build It Back, New York Rising and other Sandy related programs have all faltered. There’s the ferry. The slow Army Corps. Where’s the Congressman’s voice? Oh, sorry, we forgot, he just won re-election. ***** Howie Schwach, the longtime editor and writer, now runs onrockaway. com, an online newspaper. Howie is active as ever and often reports breaking news. On Monday, he reported that another shooting incident occurred, the 14th of the year in Rockaway on Monday afternoon at 12:53 p.m. at Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 26 Street in the 101 Precinct. ***** Super Boardwalk Fairs will be in Rockaway on June 6-7, July 18-9, and August 29-30. Alan Finchley, who has been running craft fairs and street festivals since 2008, says vendor slots are still open. (Go to NassuaCountyCraftShows for info). The Super Fair debuted last August in Rockaway and proved to be a huge hit. ***** Speaking of fairs and festivals, the Irish Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31, at St. Camillus on Beach 100th Street. The great event runs each day from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. We’ll have more as we get closer to the dates.
We’ll do our best to keep you informed about all the good stuff happening. We just heard Beach Flix, the popular movie series, run by the Rockaway Civic Association, will be back and scheduling is being worked on. Rockstock and Barrels, the surf, skate and music festival will be back. And so will sand castle building, and there’ll be great Rockaway Artists Alliance exhibits, great bands will appear all over the peninsula and then there’s the International Children’s Day Festival on 116th Street on June 7. And that’s just off the top of our heads! There’ll be lots more to enjoy. Stay tuned. ***** The Rockaway Times salutes the service of slain Police Officer Brian Moore. Moore, just 25 years old, died after being shot last Saturday. Brave cops risk their lives every day. That can’t be overlooked or forgotten. It shouldn’t be stated cavalierly. It’s a fact. We’ll say it again: Police Officer Moore was just 25. ***** We’re happy to have Annette Farina and Belle Harbor Realty join our real estate section. We’re grateful so many top notch realtors in The Rockaway Times. Location. Location. Location. ***** Happy 81st birthday (May 5), Charlie Kinzie. *****

Groms can soon go on an adventure in a new children’s book about surfing. Photographer, and now, author Chris Gorman is a lifelong surfer who grew up on the beaches of Rhode Island before settling in Long Beach, NY. While living in the city, Gorman often came down to Rockaway to surf the waves here and was involved in a start-up business in Rockaway. Gorman is a big collector of surf memorabilia, including surf books, but he noticed that there weren’t many options for kids. Taking his passion for surfing, Gorman wanted to create something that his little girl, Indi, and other surfer kids could enjoy. “I discovered there were very few children’s books about surfing, and the ones we found were more focused on fun loving animals or environmental themes, which are great, but they didn’t have the surf
culture vibe I wanted. So in collaboration with my daughter Indi we set out to make that book,” Gorman said. Gorman’s hardcover children’s book, Indi Surfs, will be available on June 23. Indi Surfs is the story of a little girl who braves the ocean in search of the perfect wave. Gorman took inspiration from decades of surf art and a wide variety of surf artists such as Rick Griffin, John Severson, Shepard Fairey and Raymond Pettibone, when developing the book. “In creating the book I chose to strip away all the possible sub-plots and messages and just depict the act of surfing in a simple and beautiful way,” Gorman said. Gorman’s work is being published by PowerHouse Books in NYC and is available for pre-sale. For more information and a preview of Indi Surfs, check out indisurfs.com.

Mother’s Support Group
Dear Editor, I am responding to the letter in last weeks issue, “Pills The Problem”. I agree, there is a huge problem with drug addiction and our young people. Drug addiction is at epidemic proportions in Long Island and also Staten Island, if anyone thinks it isn’t in Rockaway you are sadly mistaken. This past November we were completely blind sided when we found out our very successful 23 year old was using drugs and was addicted. Wanting to get help, he went away for 30 days, and in January went on to live at a sober living facility and is also going to intensive outpatient 5 days a week. We were very lucky he wanted to go away and get the help he desperately needed. I have started a mother’s support group and we are five strong right now. It’s for local moms who have a child that battles the disease of addiction,a place to share without shame. If you are interested please email me at Hopeinrockaway@aol. com.

SBS Is BS
Dear Editor: No matter what ANYONE says, Select Bus Service SBS hasn’t met needs as projected in NYC. SBS doesn’t go much faster than normal bus routes such as Bx12. Furthermore, SBS has REDUCED economic viability for local businesses. You really can’t shop and bring all of your goods on a bus because you can’t park your car nearby. The amount of money wasted on bus lanes and everything else is like peeing into the wind - the repercussion comes right back on you. Narrowing Woodhaven Blvd will only exacerbate the traffic situation. It makes me think some people in government want to ban the autoContinued on page 40

Dear Editor: Make “THE LIVING BREAKWATERS PROJECT” our Fourth (4th) Alternative to the Rockaway Formulation Study for the June, 2015 vote. I am a 68-year Rockaway resident and have experienced every hurricane to affect the Rockaway Peninsula since Hurricane Carl in 1954. Before you visit the below link to USACE, which they’re trying to “ram down our throats” and which ignores and offers no additional protection for Belle Harbor and Neponsit (where we pay the highest real estate taxes!), please consider my suggestion for a fourth (4th) ALTERNATIVE (below link created by Rebuild by Design) which will possibly be implemented by the voters in Staten Island to prevent their south shore exposure from future storm surges. It was completely funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and is totally ecology-friendly so the cost of this invaluable study is already “sunk” and, thusly, free to Rockaway residents and to the USACE budget. It was implemented for the approx. seven (7) mile shoreline strip from Tottenville to Great Kills, S.I. - IRONICALLY, the very same distance between Breezy Point and Beach 9th Street in Far Rockaway where the same dangerous ocean exposure exists which Rockaway residents will also be facing. Our situations (Rockaway and Staten Island) regarding flood damage exposure are indeed analogous. The additional millions of Federal monies allocated to us from Hurricane Sandy Funding over and above our Boardwalk rebuilding expense should be able to pay for this project. What’s more is that Senator Charles Schumer fully endorses this project for Staten Islanders. I ask: “If it works for Staten Islanders in protecting them from future storm surges, why not the same project for Rockawayites?” Is it possible for every concerned resident to look into this other 4th possibility, linked below with video, and bring to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s attention (at: http://schumer.senate.gov ) this fourth (4th) ALTERNATIVE to the Rockaway Reformulation Study? It is our community duty to get the USACE to INCLUDE it for consideration when the vote comes up in June, 2015! On a national level, Senator Schumer can certainly have the USACE ADD it to their three rather weak alternatives if he hears from enough of his constituents. Of all the choices, I do believe this 4th AL-
TERNATIVE is the most efficient and makes the most sense in protecting the entire Rockaway Peninsula from future storm surges and concurrent flood damages. Become proactive and voice your opinion NOW with both Senator Schumer as well as with the USACE (robert.j.smith@usace.army.mil). Ask for a response to your email in your message so it will be included in our vote in June, 2015.

Fix Flawed Federal Relief Legislation Now! Hurricane Sandy Lessons Learned - Disaster Relief! By Hank Iori, President BHPOA, Board 14 Member
Researching why so many issues have come up in dealing with SBA and Build it Back, I have come to the conclusion that the original foundation laid down by the federal government, though well meaning, is flawed. Passage of the Stafford Act has lead to unintended negative consequences for many people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. I do believe that the legislators that drafted this act were well intended. I am not suggesting doing away with the Stafford Act. I am recommending that it is time for congress to review and revise the Stafford Act. No matter what party affiliation, the impact of the Stafford Act, with it’s built in third rail and “catch 22” mandates needs to be fixed. The same negative implications that New York is currently facing will occur in the future across this nation without refined adjustments made to this legislation. Formulating a plan that is timely and cost efficient in assisting disaster victims is essential. The Stafford Act is a move in the right direction but needs to be improved to more rapidly respond to disasters in a fair and equitable manner. There are lessons learned based on what has happened over the last two and a half years since Hurricane Sandy. The goal is to get to all our federal legislators the recommendations stated in this article and ask that they act ASAP. A major problem many residents found themselves facing is the flawed logic in the Stafford Act. Someone interested in getting their home back together quickly initially had only SBA loans avail-
able to them. They were told that there was no guarantee that grant money would be available to assist them in rebuilding their home. They were also told that their SBA loan would not impact negatively on any future grants offered. Some time later, when Build It Back was put into action, those individuals that accepted an SBA loan were told the full amount of their loan would be deducted from any grant amount from Build It Back. Language in the Stafford Act considers it “A Duplication of Benefits” if someone takes out an SBA loan and then requests a grant. This is the justification for subtracting SBA loan dollars from the BIB grant calculations. This justification is flawed! There is no logical reason for this – no individual, given a choice, would pick an SBA loan over a no strings attached grant. Who would want to pay back a loan for 20+ years rather than accept grant dollars with no payment back required? The SBA loan from HUD based on the Stafford Act needs to be changed. SBA loans have become a third rail for many people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Example, two neighbors with exactly the same amount of storm damage, says $200,000. The first homeowner took a $150,000 SBA loan while the second homeowner did not. When BIB calculates their grant approval, the first homeowner gets deducted $150,000 by BIB in their grant approval while the second homeowner does not. Three local bands are gearing up to bring a taste of Rockaway talent to Manhattan in a unique musical experience. On Saturday, May 23, all are invited to kick off the summer at Fontana’s (105 Eldridge Street), with Daha, RatTrap Bumpkin and Thy Burden. With three bands featuring a wild cast of characters, bringing three unique sounds to one stage, it’s guaranteed to be a fun, entertaining way to start Memorial Day Weekend. Starting off the night will be Thy Burden at 8 p.m. The nine to 14 piece band, “depending on the day,” according to vocalist and guitarist Ian Boyle, is a folk bank with “bluegrass instrumentation and a little bit of a psychedelic and gypsy vibe.” Thy Burden originated in Brooklyn in 2007, but hasn’t played together since 2011. “This show will be like a reunion for us. I’m super psyched. We dissolved in like a dramatic turmoil, so it’s nice to be getting back together,” Boyle said. “It’s going to be wild.” If you’re familiar with Indaculture, you may recognize some members in the following band, Daha. Bobby Butler and Phil Kadet, who also play in Indaculture, along with Billy Tramarchi, make up this three-piece side project that originated in New Paltz about 12 years ago. “We were big in New Paltz. We would have huge crowds,” bassist Butler said. Listening to Daha, you might feel like you’re in the middle of a video game. “Some of the music is a bit inspired by Zelda,” keyboardist Kadet said. “Any of the songs could be played during a Zelda battle. A lot of it is instrumentally focused. It’s all original and it’s all from the future,” Kadet

added. With Kadet slated to play at jazz clubs in Paris later this summer, the May 23 show, will be one of the last for Daha, for a while. “We’re gonna go all out for this one,” Butler said. “It’s going to be amazing. The whole world should be there,” Kadet said. Finishing up the night will be Rattrap Bumpkin at around 10 p.m. The three-piece featuring Michael Benedetto on guitar and vocals, Bryan Fraser on bass and vocals and Chris Stanis on drums, is known as a “pirate band” and often play their surf/punk/ rock/blues around Jamaica Bay on the Dragon Boat in the summer. The band, which has been together for 10 years, recently released a six-song EP called “Last Band Banned,” which they debuted to a packed, wild crowd at Playland Tavern in late March. “We haven’t played in Manhattan in many years, so this should be fun, especially because we’re friends with the other bands that are playing. Everyone is going to be there for each other. It’s going to be a good night and it’s the unofficial kickoff of summer,” Fraser said. “We have a reputation for being a loud band,” Stanis said. “Our friends and fans go crazy and we hope to bring our Rockaway vibe into Manhattan that night.” In hopes that Rockaway friends and fans will join in on the fun, the bands will have a bus leaving from Rockaway and heading to the show, so people Continued on page 27

Brunch Rules The “Hats and Horses” party celebrating the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby at the Broad Channel VFW last Saturday was an over the top success. The Post Canteen and back porch overflowed all afternoon and well into the evening with a standing room only crowd as Gail Waldheim and Grace Arnemann kept the mint juleps, root beer floats and Moscow mules flowing while Chef Bob Prokopowicz worked his magic in the kitchen turning out endless and delicious cheeseburger sliders and roasted jalapeno poppers. Vinny Churchio made himself dizzy as he continually circulated through the crowd all day to accommodate those who wanted to place a wager on any of the day’s events. The Hat of the Day award (if we had one) would have gone to Eileen O’Hare who had each of the Derby entries represented on the brim of her chapeaux with small horse figurines. By early evening I even thought the little horses were actually running around her hat but my wife assured me that it had more to do with the Moscow mules I was imbibing. The Broad Channel VFW will be holding a brunch on Sunday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. I know in the past I have aligned myself with those who can’t quite grasp the popularity of this “two in one” meal but, truth be told, I have been converted. I no longer pay any attention to the brunch haters -- because now I think it is, hands down, the best meal ever. Seriously, there are so many reasons to love brunch -- most importantly is the simple fact that any meal which has a Bloody Mary as its MVP completely makes up for any bogus reasons people cite as to why they hold this weird meal in disdain. Just think about how sad, lonely, and alcohol-free your Sunday mornings would be without this excuse to begin imbibing before the sun is directly overhead! A world without brunch is definitely not a world I want to live in. And they even serve food!
Sunday, May 24 is our Memorial Day parade and the unofficial start of Broad Channel’s summer of 2015! The parade will start at 1:00 p.m. with a wreath laying ceremony at the 17th Road Park Flag Pole and then travel northward along Cross Bay Boulevard to the George Riekers Veterans Memorial Park for additional wreath laying and closing ceremonies. As always, our community’s honored guests will be those veterans from St. Albans Hospital who will be joined by our own local veteran members of the Broad Channel VFW and American Legion organizations and many, if not all, of our elected officials. Afterwards please join us at the VFW Post on Shad Creek Road for a BBQ while sharing a conversation with our veterans. Make it a point to drop by to greet and thank our men and women who have served us and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It takes just a few moments of your time. Take an active role in your health care and help yourself to get the best care possible from your doctor. One way to do this is to improve your relationship with your doctor. Learn how to advocate for yourself and your family in the doctor’s office at this open discussion about doctor-patient communication at the Broad Channel Library on Thursday, May 7, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Again, Danny Ruscillo wants to remind all of us that “Our Police Officers put their lives on the line every day” so both he and all the members of the 100th Precinct Community Council are asking all those who can to join with them in commemorating National Police Week with a short candle light (or flashlight) vigil in front of the 100th Precinct on Wednesday evening, May 13, from 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm. A colleague recently told me that for seven years he traveled from Monday to Friday or Saturday, some weeks in 3 countries like Brazil, England and South Africa, sleeping on planes, having showers and then going to meetings. I was listening sort of in disbelief and our conversation moved on to something else before I got the chance to ask, “Was that necessary?” What in our world makes that necessary or even thinkable? The idea that every business, every one has to be bigger, better, more profitable, more, more, more has become fundamental and to me, rather disconcerting. I do not believe that we humans are made to “be” in this way. The stress all of that being bigger, better, more, wreaks havoc on the body to a cellular level and causes disease. This is why yoga and meditation practices as well as specialized physical training programs have become so mainstream. People are willing to keep up to strive, strive to get ahead make more money, whatever, whatever, as long as they can “balance” with the other stuff. The yoga studios and fitness clubs all talk about relieving stress, but, if you approach your yoga practice or your fitness regime in the same manner as you do other aspects of life, the balance will not manifest itself. You almost have to wipe the slate clean when you step into your oasis – whether it be a yoga studio or a specialized fitness studio or gym – and treat it like an oasis – a haven, a retreat, whatever you want to call it. It is your space for
you for a period of time. Take the time to breathe. Deep breathing in and deep breathing out. It’s really about intention and what balance really is. Having the intention to balance throughout all aspects of life and finding a way to get there is the key. The example of my colleague I mentioned earlier is an extreme case, but, many people experience fast-paced, stressful work environments or home lives. What can you do to make them less stressful? What can you do to make them more in balance with a healthful life? Be in the moment. Even if you have a million things going on, focus on what is right in front of you at that moment, THEN move on to the next thing. Focus in, be present. Do some deep breathing throughout the day for a minute or two each time. Breathe into the belly on the count of 3 and breathe out on the count of 3. Gradually you will increase the count in a slow steady way. When you’re breathing in say a word to yourself that has a positive meaning to you; when you breathe out do the same. Let go of the attachments that you think are important. Is it really important to do something just because you have done it and everyone has done it and? Evaluate and let go. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace. Question/comment: Email us at BeWellBeHappy2@gmail.com

Peninsula Prep Is Going Strong Charter School More Than Back From Brink By Michael Leboff
Peninsula Prep is open. Peninsula Prep is thriving. That’s the
message the administration wants to be made clear. In the April 23 edition of The Rockaway Times, we ran a story about residents of Arverne By The Sea being upset at the prospect of Challenge Prep, a middle school, coming to ABTS. In that article, it was written that Peninsula Prep Academy Charter School, the school originally planned to open

in the new community, had closed. News reports from 2012 had indicated as such. Peninsula Prep officials were quick to set the record straight and invited The Rockaway Times for a firsthand look. Despite an almost innumerable amount of hurdles, Peninsula Prep Academy Charter School has been able to thrive thanks to a passionate, family-like foundation and unwavering leadership. The school’s faculty and staff have made the most out of what was given to them, and turned it into a thriving learning community highlighted by an engaging student body. The leadership starts with the school’s determined Principal, Ms. Karen Jones. As we walked throughout the halls, Jones was greeted with a hug from several students, and despite only being at the head of PPA since August, the energetic and upbeat Principal knew each scholar’s name and background. Jones is a veteran of stewarding charter schools, and was brought to Peninsula in August to steer the ever-growing school as it continues to take steps towards excellence. She shook up the curriculum, introducing technology, arts, and other programs that the school had never had before. According to Betty Leon, the chair of the school’s board, she would stop at nothing to find the perfect fit for Peninsula Prep. “I wanted the best,” Leon said. “And [Jones] is the best.” Jones believes that PPA’s progressive approach to education, which includes ridding the school of all textbooks for all subjects save for math books and moving their reading curriculum online, is playing a vital role in the charter’s upward trend. Jones and her staff have also implemented a new educational methodology referred to as the
“flipped classroom” in order to engage their students in a rewarding fashion. Flipped classroom is a blended learning technique that requires students to digest instructional content outside the classroom and moves educational exercises, traditionally seen as homework, inside the classroom under the teacher’s supervision. This is all very impressive when you consider the obstacles the school has overcome since its founding in 2004. After receiving a “C” in 2012 from the Department of Education, the school was slated to lose its charter but went to court to stay open. But staying open was only part of the challenge. It’s where they would stay open that became a challenge. Finding a permanent home with adequate space has been an ongoing quest. Even now that the school is settled into its current home at 611 Beach 19th Street, space is still hard to come by, small group lessons are taught in the hallway and at one point recently, due to flooding, the cafeteria had to be used as a classroom for two different classes. But as is the case in every facet of the school, they are making it work. Currently the school boasts a student body of over 300 scholars and a waiting list that features 500 names. Jones leads a staff of 48 people, all of whom she says are committed to the school’s mission. Another encouraging sign of the school’s growth is that the administration is currently exploring options to expand to include sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in the near future. But for now the goal is to continue to nurture young minds through enriching education. “We want the children to feel important,” Leon said. “These are the children that are going to be taking care of me in the future.” And their current grade? The Department of Education awarded the school an Overall A.
Youth Summit Set for May 16 will offer programs for parents. The theme of this year’s Youth Summit—with the tag line “It’s the Far Rock Life for Us!”—explores what it means to be a young person in Far Rockaway and emphasizes empowerment. The Youth Planning Committee has recorded an original song related to the theme, which they will debut at the event. The Far Rockaway Youth Summit was first held in 2012, and the unique, youth-led event has continued to grow ever since. It remains a vital source of positivity for the community, combating the perception that Rockaway has nothing to offer young people by showcasing locally available programs and services. “It’s a great way to let teens explore their options and speak Continued on page 37

Superstorm Sandy Flood Claims After Sandy damaged our family home in Rockaway, my law firm decided to fight for our friends and neighbors who were underpaid on their flood insurance claims. We joined forces with Gauthier Houghtaling & Williams, the law firm that recovered millions for homeowners after Hurricane Katrina. Our team took the flood insurance companies to federal court and beat them.
FEMA HAS NOW AUTHORIZED A REVIEW OF ALL 144,000 FLOOD INSURANCE CLAIMS. Let us review your claim with FEMA. You may be owed significant additional money. Don’t delay, sign up now and be among the first to be properly compensated. There are 144,000 potential claimants. Don’t be left waiting at the end of the line. Let us get working on your claim today.
Falsified Inspection Reports As reported by 60 Minutes in The Storm After the Storm our team proved in court that homeowners were underpaid using falsified inspection reports. Many homeowners have no idea they are still owed the balance of their flood policy (up to $250,000) and the insurance company is hoping you never ask for it! If flood insurance underpaid your claim let us fight for you. We will take care of everything.
Was I Underpaid? You were underpaid if flood insurance didn’t pay for all the covered flood damage to your house. If flood insurance underpaid your claim, we will get you the money you deserve. If we don't win, you owe us nothing.

Heroes of the Harbor Local ferry activists are being awarded for keeping up the good fight. On Thursday, May 7, local ferry supporters were to be honored as Heroes of the Harbor at the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance Conference. In 2013, Linda and Danny Ruscillo founded the group, Rockaway United to Save Our Ferry, to push for permanent ferry service for the peninsula. The group held several meetings and rallies, trying to convince the City that Rockaway needs a permanent ferry. Despite their efforts, ferry service was discontinued in October 2014. In February of this year, Mayor de Blasio announced that the Rockaway ferry would return as part of a citywide ferry service, which won’t arrive until 2017. For Rockaway United, and many more in Rockaway, 2017 isn’t soon enough. The group is continuing to advocate for immediate ferry service. For their dedication, Rockaway United to Save Our Ferry, along with six other groups and activists, is being honored during the “Shaping Your 21st Century Waterfront” Conference held by MWA. Each of the honorees has pushed for improvement or expanding fer-

ry service. Laura Deckelman, a local photographer who has been a leader in the ferry fight, will accept the award on behalf on Rockaway United. Deckelman was committed to riding the ferry every day while it was running. She took scenic photos on each ride to help promote the service on SeaStreak. Longtime local ferry activist, Joe Hartigan will also be honored for his individual accomplishments. As a member of the Long Island Sound Ferry Coalition, the Transportation Research Forum, Glen Cove Ferry Committee, Advanced Transit Association, and many other groups, Hartigan has been a ferry supporter for more than 20 years. The other honorees include the Bronx Community Board 9 Ferry Service Committee, Brooklyn Community Board 10, Hon. Ydanis Rodriguez, the Roosevelt Island Community Coalition and the Staten Island Ferry Riders Committee. The all-day conference was scheduled to take place from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. on board the Hornblower Infinity around the Hudson River on Thursday. On the schedule were discussions about the five-borough ferry service and other current waterfront issues.
Goldfeder Raising West Nile Awareness With the summer season fast approaching and with families spending more time outdoors in the coming months, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is encouraging the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) to step up efforts to combat West Nile Virus, the deadly mosquito-borne illness that has claimed multiple lives in recent years. The request comes amid recent efforts by the Assemblyman to combat abandoned properties plaguing Sandy-damaged communities that serve as ideal grounds for mosquito breeding. “Families in southern Queens and Rockaway are at increased risk from the dangers of West Nile virus,” Goldfeder said. “The higher rate of abandoned properties and construction projects throughout the community following Sandy has only increased our potential for mosquito breeding. That’s why I’m calling on the city take action and protect the health and well-being of our families as we head into summer.” In a letter DOHMH Commissioner Mary Travis Bassett, Goldfeder urged the agency to increase mosquito spraying in southern Queens

and Rockaway and use all measures at their disposal to monitor mosquito breeding in the community and alert families to any potential danger. The Assemblyman also encouraged the commissioner to work with the Department of Environmental Protection to locate and clean out clogged catch basins that could facilitate mosquito breeding, and to collaborate with the Sanitation Department in enforcing lot cleanings. Areas prone to mosquito breeding include standing water, road construction sites, clogged sewers and catch basins and obstructed waterways. Goldfeder explained in his letter that the potential for mosquito breeding was particularly alarming on private residential and commercial properties left abandoned following Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Last year, in response to numerous complaints from constituents, Goldfeder put forward a threepoint plan to combat so-called “zombie homes” and has since worked closely with city agencies to step up code enforcement and encourage mosquito spraying and rodent bating at the blighted properties.

Let’s talk!
Brian Gillen, a longtime Rockaway lifeguard, is celebrating the publication of his first book. The work, entitled A Theology of Wonder: G.K. Chesterton’s Response to Nihilism, is a refutation of moral relativism, and a presentation of some of G.K.’s most impressive reflections on the wonder of existence. G. K. Chesterton was one of the giants of early 20th century literature. Although never a professional theologian, he was what one might call a lay theologian. “I wrote it to share an element most lacking in modern thought, namely the astonished sense of gratitude and wonder at the mystery of existence, and the joyous recognition, in particular, at the marvel of being human,” Gillen said. Gillen’s work was published by leading UK publisher, Gracewing Publishing, in late January. He had the help of Rockaway resident Michael O’Leary who did the cover artwork for the book. “Being a published author, was a dream I had given up on long

won’t have to worry about taking the A train late at night. “We can’t have a show on Memorial Day Weekend without a bus,” Fraser said. “Nobody has to worry about being drunk on the train. You can just hop on the bus and have a great time. It’s just a few hours on a Saturday night, that you might remember, or not,” Fraser joked. “You’re going to see three wildly unique bands with ridiculous characters in them,” Butler said. “I want people to get drunk and dance and scream and just go wild and have fun. All of these bands have a sense of humor. Everyone has a good time doing what they’re doing and if you’re there, you’ll have a good time, too. These are bands that smile while they play and you’ll smile watching them.” The night will finish with an after-party at Connolly’s on Beach 95th Street. Individual tickets for the May 23 show at Fontana’s are $10. For those who want to take the bus from Rockaway, the cost is $25 and includes admission to the show. For tickets, contact Bobby Butler at 347-234-2087 or Bryan Fraser at 347-387-2691. It is recommended to buy tickets in advance, as there will be a limited amount available at the door.

The clock is ticking on the City’s deadline to finish the first phase of the boardwalk. With just a little more than two weeks to finish, contractors are working later on weekdays and weekends, to finish the strip from Beach 86th to Beach 97th Streets. The Parks Department has released its May boardwalk update, summarizing what has been done and what will be happening throughout the month. In Phase 1, from Beach 86th to Beach 97th, the placement of the finished boardwalk concrete planks is substantially complete. Grouting plank joints and railing installation will continue and be completed. Cast in place concrete stairs and ramps along with new drainage structures will be constructed. RPL decking, furniture, signage, and trashcans will be installed. To establish the dune, sand fence installation and beach grass planting has been substantially completed for the spring. Delivery and grading of sand along the north side will continue and be completed. In order to finish this phase by Memorial Day Weekend, additional work will take place later during the weekdays, and on Saturdays. In Phase 2, from Beach 97th Street to Beach 107th Street, which is expected to be complete by July 4, installation of plumbing and electrical utilities has been completed. Pile driving for beach access structures is complete, and delivery and installation of access structure precast pile caps and planks will be completed this month. Sandfill will continue to be delivered to the site and placed under the new boardwalk. Pre-cast plank delivery and placement will continue, followed by railing installation, and grouting of the planks. Construction of cast in place concrete stairs will commence. To establish the dune, sand fence installation and beach grass planting has been planted and is substantially complete. In Phase 3, from Beach 108th to Beach 126th Streets, surveying
and chain-link fence installation will commence. In addition, water main relocation will commence, followed by pipe and H-pile driving. The installation of the sand retaining wall will also commence. There will be no work in Phase 4B, from Beach 60th to Beach 73rd Streets in May because of the Piping Plover Construction Moratorium. So far, in Phase 1, the installation of the pipe piles, H-piles, sand retaining wall, pile cap, access structure pipe piles, utilities, sandfill and plank placement are substantially complete. In Phase 2, the installation of the pipe piles, Hpiles, sand retaining wall, pile caps, and access structure pipe piles and pile caps is substantially complete. In Phase 3, all removals are substantially complete except from Beach 118th to Beach 121st Streets. The remaining removals will be coordinated and completed based on utility relocation work in the area. In Phase 4B, the removals of the existing boardwalk piles, caps, benches and railings has been complete. Installation or boardwalk pipe pile, H-pile driving and the sand retaining wall is also substantially complete in 4B. In Phase 4A, a chain link fence has been placed to secure the area and the benches and existing boardwalk structure have been removed. Hpile driving is approximately 90 percent complete and pipe pile driving is approximately 75 percent complete in Phase 4A. During construction, certain access points will be blocked off. For instance, there won’t be access at Beach 94th St, 92nd St, 90th St or 88th Street in Phase 1, until Memorial Day Weekend, but there will be access at Beach 86th Street. Access points at Beach 105th St, 104th St, 103rd St, 102nd St, 101st St, and 98th Streets will also be closed off, but Beach 97th and Beach 106th Street access points are open and Beach 105th, 101st and 98th will be open by Memorial Day Weekend.

Social Media has become a powerful tool to share creative talents. Many photographers, both professional and amateur, sometimes share their work on social media outlets like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Since not everyone utilizes these online and app-based sources, we’re bringing some of the best Rockaway photography to you. Instagram photos can only go so far, and we thought some of these photos that were shared this week, deserved some extra attention. This first photo (our front cover this week) comes from a Los Angeles artist and photographer that goes by 2wenty. 2wenty says they shot this photo on Beach 140th,

Fix Flawed Federal Relief Legislation Now! Hurricane Sandy – Lessons Learned - Disaster Relief! Continued from page 10
homeowner in the same situation would be accepted by BIB and would be eligible for additional grant money. Recommendations as to how our federal legislators could improve the Stafford Act.
Problem #1 • According to recent figures 11,446 New Yorkers applied to SBA. Of those 5,443 have active non-declined loans.
Solution
al loans. Once a loan is granted, dollars are given out piecemeal based on submission of receipts for work. SBA needs to approve the work requested prior to approving payment. If you were approved for $100,000 loan at 1.9 percent interest but only received $8,000 from SBA you still have to pay 1.9 percent interest on the full $100,000 amount. Many people dropped out of the program, paid back the money received, due to the slow and cumbersome SBA process.
Solution Congress needs to set up a
These individuals caught in the HUD-SBA web need the federal government to make an exception to the rule right now and allow their SBA loans not to be deducted from their BIB grant. With the grant money received it could then be used to close out their SBA loan thereby addressing the “duplication of benefits” concern.
Problem #2:
Small Home Owner’s Disaster Recovery Loan Program. This program could be an enhancement to the Stafford Act. The program would provide low interest bearing loans to qualified individuals. The amount of the loan would be given to the individual in full, upon approval. At a later date, if grant money becomes available, this loan will not be counted against the homeowner. The homeowner will be required to repay the portion of the loan amount factored into the grant to HUD. If you agree with what I’m saying, I recommend you send a letter
to our elected Federal Representatives. You can also call or email them with your concerns. Keep it simple, you can even copy the article and send it out with “I Agree with these stated recommendations!” written on it. We need to be more pro-active in pushing for these changes. Eliminating the dysfunctional elements written into the Stafford Act will positively impact present and future federal relief initiatives. Learning, adjusting and adapting is built into the American DNA. It’s time that we act on what we have learned from our disaster relief experiences. It is the fair and equitable way to go!

A youthful enterprise is growing in Rockaway. This Saturday, at 10 a.m. the Rockaway Youth Task Force will officially open their community garden. The garden, which is on Beach 58th Street and Beach Channel Drive, features plenty of planting beds, solar panels, and a fire pit. Milan Taylor, who heads the organization hopes that the garden will blossom into a focal point for the community, a place where people from all over the peninsula can come together. Taylor founded the RYTF back in 2011, citing the fact that there was very little opportunity for young people on the peninsula to organize and make a positive impact on the community. “I wanted to create a platform for young people to make a difference,” Taylor said of the organization’s humble beginnings. “I really didn’t think it would grow this big, this quickly.” Since the organization’s founding, it has seen its fair share of ups

and downs but the group hopes that through programs and projects like the community garden, the Rockaway Youth Task Force can continue to establish itself as a community advocate and a place for the youth of the peninsula to make a difference. “Having this here as a community meeting space gives people the opportunity to meet their neighbors who they’ve never spoken to,” Silaka Cox said. Cox is the RYTF’s Chief Operating Officer and is the youngest sitting member on Queens Community Board 14. “We’re giving teenagers and young adults in the area exposure to things that they otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn about.” Taylor believes that the best way to tackle issues like gang violence is to start at the root cause of the issue. “We really feel that some of the root causes of gang violence and the rise in shootings in the area is due to the lack of economic stability and opportunity in our community. Everything that we do is done to combat those social ills,” Taylor added.

Have a Taste of Queens Taste of Rockaway Beach was a big success, but maybe you’d like to take an even bigger bite out of Queens. Queens Taste 2015 will be held at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on Tuesday, May 12, from 6 pm to 9 pm. The Queens Economic Development Corporation, the Queens Tourism Council and Delta Air Lines are sponsoring the Queens food festival which will feature a variety of taste from ethnically different cuisines from around the borough. Rockaway’s own Thai Rock will be serving up Thai treats from their menu, plus La Fusta in Elmhurst will bring beefy Argentine fare, while Jamaica’s O Lavrador will prepare Portuguese paella. Pa-Nash in Rosedale will serve West Indian/Moroccan fusion, while Astoria’s Zenon Taverna will offer up Greek specialties. Latin participants include the Arepa Lady (Colombian) from Jackson Heights and Mexican cuisine via La Adelita in Woodside. Asian dishes will be served by Flushing’s Mulan and Kimchee Smoke, which is often at LIC Flea & Food. Meanwhile, the Michelin-starred M. Wells Steakhouse will bring its
famous beef tartare meatballs. There will also be artisan specialties like gluten-free products and ethnic desserts from clients of the Entrepreneur Space and drinks from Long Island City’s SquareWine & Spirits. Participants will put the tastes to the test and will get to vote on Best Appetizer, Best Entrée, Best Dessert, and Best Beverage in a people’s choice format. There will also be entertainment by Big Apple Circus clowns who will do magic tricks and give away free red noses. About 800 people are expected to attend. “Because of the food, drinks, desserts, people, venue, and tremendous energy, I look forward to Queens Taste all year,” QEDC Executive Director Seth Bornstein said. “It’s so much fun on so many levels.” Tickets for the Queens Taste 2015 cost $125 each or $200 for two. Proceeds support QEDC’s ongoing efforts to attract and maintain jobs in the borough through business services, neighborhood development, the E-Space, and more. A Look into Our Past to See Our Future. By Matt Whalen
At one time around the turn of the century, Rockaway had its own trolley system. It was called the Ocean Electric Railway. Today, trolley cars could still transport people in Rockaway and could possibly solve some of her local transportation problems. The larger transportation problems that Rockaway faces are obvious. WE NEED THE FERRY NOW! WE NEED THE QUEENSRAIL NOW (formerly the old L.I.R.R. Rockaway Beach branch). Trolleys are powered by clean electric motors; they are quiet
(something Rockaway needs), efficient, nice to look at and fun to ride. One possible route would be to connect with other larger forms of transportation. Trolleys could shuttle people from one end of Rockaway to the other, they could connect with the ferry or RE-ACTIVATE the QueensRail spur to interconnect the borough of Queens once again. A trolley could start and run past the MTA Mott Ave station, then run down Central Ave. and connect with the L.I.R.R. Far Rockaway station. The trolley could also travel along Rockaway Freeway and connect the streets NOT served by
the MTA Subway, an idea that has worked before. A good system route would connect Far Rockaway with the rest of Rockaway, it could possibly go for a short trip down Beach 116th connecting with the subway. It could then travel west (next to) B.C.D. and terminate at Fort Tilden. Whatever the route would be, it would be an improvement over the current conditions of neglect by NYC to connect southern Queens with the rest of NYC. This is everyone’s problem, NOT just Rockaway’s problem. It only takes a few minutes to call City Hall and complain to the mayor
and tell him “we need the ferry now.” It only takes a few minutes to contact the Queens Public Transit Committee and say, “How can I help.” Even if you have only 10 minutes of spare time “You CAN do something to help”. Rockaway doesn’t have a lot of things but, the reason she’s STILL HERE is because, for better or worse, she’s got “Fight” in her and won’t run away. Let’s show the mayor that this is ONE Rockaway and we’re NOT going away! “Nobody can do everything but, everybody can do something” Just my two cents...”

the way before we get to next summer, qualifying for and racing well at this year’s outdoor championship.” Gallagher’s rise in track and field started as a sophomore at Bishop Kearney High School in Brooklyn. As a junior, Gallagher felt she came into her own and points to Bishop Kearney track coach, John Lovett, as one of the reasons for her success. “I’ve been blessed to have knowledgeable and patient coaches. Coach Lovett gave me a taste for how fun this sport can be while always encouraging me to dream big and set my goals high.” After graduating from Bishop Kearney, Gallagher moved on to rewrite the record books at Fordham University, setting records in a myriad of events including the 4x400 meter relay, the indoor 800m, outdoor 4x800, and the sprint medley relay. After graduating from Fordham, Gallagher took a job with Morgan Stanley but soon after took a job as an assistant on Centrowitz’s staff at American University in Washington, D.C. The transition from athlete to coach has given her a new perspective on the sport. “Coaching has been a fantastic experience for me so far. I learn so much from the athletes and hopefully they are learning from me as well. It’s
an interesting dynamic assisting Coach Centrowitz in coaching his athletes while still running for him myself. I think I get the best of both worlds watching him teach them things that I can apply to my own running while sharing with them some things that I’ve picked up along the way as well.” Being a part of a team is nothing new to Gallagher, she is the third oldest of nine children and has blazed a path for her younger siblings. Her sister, Mary, ran with her at Kearney before running at St. Francis College where she set a record in the 1500. Her younger brothers, Conor and Liam, are both on the track team
KERRI WITH SISTERS and niece at the Rockapulco 5k. at Molloy College, and her sisters Jacqueline and Therese are currently running for Lovett at Bishop Kearney. Even though she runs in races all over the continent, Gallagher still loves to come home and run at home. “The Rockapulco run series is a staple! John Edwards does a wonderful job promoting
Rockaway running through the races.” To watch a video of Kerri Gallgher’s win at the Penn Relays, please visit the RockawayTimes. com

DOC DOC Other Forms Of Fat By Peter Galvin, MD
Talk to anyone about lipids (fats) in the blood and you’ll find that cholesterol will be mentioned first. But there are other forms of fat in our blood, for instance triglycerides. Triglyceride has always been cholesterol’s little brother but triglyceride levels are important too. In fact the American Heart Association notes that triglyceride levels are an important biomarker of cardiovascular disease risk. In U.S. adults the mean age-adjusted triglyceride level is 128 in men and 110 in women. A “desirable” level is below 150 and borderline levels between 150 and 199. Triglyceride levels should ideally be measured when the patient is fasting. A nonfasting level of 500 or more should be
Page 37
THURSDAY, MAY 7, 2015
repeated when the patient is fasting. Treatment with medication is usually reserved for patients with a fasting level of 500 or higher. This is due to the fact that the risks of levels between 200 to 500 have not been well studied and levels greater than 500 put the patient at risk of pancreatitis (levels over 1000 impart a 20 percent risk of pancreatitis). But this does not mean that elevated levels should not be addressed. Non-medication treatment includes weight loss (5 to 10 percent of body weight), aerobic exercise, use of fish-oil (omega-3) supplements, decreased carbohydrate (starches like bread and pasta) and trans-fat intake and other dietary changes. These lifestyle changes can lower levels by 50 percent or more. Medications that are used include fibrates (Trilipix, Tricor,
etc.), niacin and omega-3 fatty acids. The most common cause of elevated triglyceride is an inherited lipid disorder. Patients with this disorder do not usually respond to lifestyle and diet modifications and often require medication. Elevated levels also occur in diabetics, those with other inherited mixed-lipid disorders, obesity and those with diets high in carbohydrates and trans-fats. It has long been known that elevated cholesterol and LDL (“bad cholesterol”) levels are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. At present that cannot be said with certainty for triglyceride simply because there is not enough evidence yet. Two large studies on triglyceride are ongoing. In addition, elevated cholesterol and LDL can worsen existing heart disease but the jury is still out on this for triglyceride. A popular quick-loss diet called the Mediterranean diet, which is a high-fat diet using olive and nut oils, can significantly elevate triglyceride levels and may precipitate a bout of pancreatitis in those with already high levels. Always consult your doctor before starting this and other fad diets. This column is published biweekly. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Creativity From 114 Students
When space allows, we print some of the creative writing produced by talented students at PS 114. The lucky students are part of Joan Diehl’s writing class.
THE ROSARY By Sophia Knoetgen Every time I walk into religious instruction, I feel as if my eyes shine brighter than a bald mans’ head with the possibility of learning something new. However, on this particular day, everyone in class felt very nervous, for we were getting our first exam back. I felt as if my beating heart could win a race against a jet. Finally, my teacher, Mr. Davis, escorted us into the classroom with a smile. He wore his usual green “Luck of the Irish” jacket and his rectangular glasses. Tiptoeing to my seat, I sat with my hands folded and my eyes peeled, like a banana. “Class, I have to admit that I predicted who would do well, and who wouldn’t”, he declared loudly in his Irish brogue. “I’ll call you up one by one now.” As he began to go down the list, I bit my fingernails with impatience. “Maisie…” I took a deep breath, as if going underwater, and walked up to him. My hands hit the desk and I slid the exam off the cluttered table with my fingers. Taking a closer look, my eyes shot down, straighter than a ruler. “Brilliant. Absolutely bril-
liant.” He wrote in neat cursive, right next to my 110% grade. My stretching smile couldn’t be hidden. Once Mr. Davis finished calling out the names, he strolled over to my desk. “Maisie, I bought you this rosary as a gift for all of your hard work.” He smiled. “Please keep this in a special place, it was blessed by the Franciscan Monks in a very special church.” I tried to say thank you, but all that came out was hot air. I could feel the redness blossoming across my cheeks. With shaking hands, I laid the rosary on my desk. It was a series of sky blue and communion dress white beads connected by a thin metallic wire. “Wow”, I whispered. Suddenly I remembered about the other kids in the class. Circling my head like an owl for any onlookers, I began blushing again. After fiddling with my thumbs for the last few minutes of class, we were finally dismissed. I bragged and boasted about my new rosary to my cousins the whole way home. As usual, they rolled their eyes and went on to talk about how someone in their class thought Mary was Jesus’ girlfriend.

AN EMBARRASSING MOMENT By Nina Clifford “Come on, Aunt Joan! You’re going to love the food!” I shouted with excitement. “Hold your horses, Nina dear!” my aunt called out as I dragged her from the car. We were all heading to a restaurant that our friend’s parents own. The waiter seated us at a table far from the window, and I felt like we had stepped into a portal to Japan. Bonsai trees and cultural music made us feel like we weren’t in Rockaway anymore. Suddenly, my brother saw his friend and dashed over to him like a goat that spotted a fresh patch of grass. The boys chatted and then his friend waved hello to me with a grin wider than Wisconsin. I greeted him, but because I gave him a big smile, my mother started smiling at me like I had gotten an A on a test. “Oooh, Nina do you like him?” my mom teased with her eyebrows wiggling like worms. Oh no, is this really happening in front of Aunt Joan? I thought to myself. I wanted to cry, yell, and walk out the door all at once, but I knew I had to act maturely in front of my favorite aunt. So, I stood up and excused myself from the table and ran to the bathroom. BANG! The door slammed against the wall as I thundered into
the room. When I looked in the mirror, my cheeks were as red as tomatoes. I splashed some cold water on my face and the bad mood left my body as quickly as the water rushed down the drain. I tried my best to add some humor into the situation. Nina, mom knows that you prefer boys with blonde hair not brown hair, I thought to myself (my brother’s friend had brown hair). Creak, the door moaned as I stepped back into the restaurant. Our food was already on the table, so I kept my eyes forward and sat down calmly. I could feel my family’s eyes staring at me, but I ignored them and dug into my meal. After about half an hour of my awkward silence, I had to look up. My mom’s eyes met mine, and she let out a laugh like the cackling of a dying hyena with the force of a cannon! Suddenly, a weird smirk appeared on my mouth and my lungs begged for a chance to let out the laughter I held in. We all laughed and laughed until our sides hurt! When we finished laughing, my mom offered to treat us to ice cream for dessert. With a long sigh, I replied, “Oh fine, I really love ice cream.” But secretly, I was really thinking: Blondes are way better looking than brownhaired boys…

that is not in clear view like a corner to test how the grout is reacting to the bleach. Use caution not to scrub too hard, you can damage the existing grout.
For this week’s project we are going to tackle those dirty grout lines. Homeowners and renters alike struggle with dirty grout lines, but there is sometimes a solution that won’t break the bank. The reason grout gets so dirty is that grout is very porous. In time the dirt is not only on the surface but has worked it’s way into the grout. There are times where the dirt has penetrated so deep that you need to have the grout professionally removed and re-grouted, but there are 3 easy steps you can try first.
Step 1- Mix a strong bleaching
solution of ¾ cup of bleach (you can use 1 cup for white grout) to 1 gallon of water.
Step 2- Using a toothbrush with
a stiff bristle (the tooth brushes you buy at the dollar store work very well), scrub inline with the grout. Be sure to start in an area
Step 3-
Thoroughly rinse the area with clean water, then clean with your regular bathroom cleaner to remove any bleach residue. Remember bleach will leave a slippery film, so rinsing alone is not enough. Once your grout is all cleaned up, you can use a grout sealer (sold at most hardware stores) to help it stay looking good. Most important, make sure the work area is very well ventilated (without proper ventilation the bleach fumes can be unsafe), wear rubber gloves (strong bleaching solution will irritate your skin) and wear safety glasses to prevent any splattering of the bleach from getting into your eyes. Saving money is great, but there are no short cuts when it comes to safety.

mobile. Restoring rail service to the Rockaway Branch Line is the ONLY sane option. Imagine being able to get to Manhattan in a half-hour. No bus system has been able to do that and none will in the future. Faster transportation means greater economic viability for people and businesses.

A Vote of Confidence for SBS
Dear Editor: Only people who don’t ride SBS think it’s less reliable. It’s the exact same bus, on the exact same rides, only people pay while they’re waiting for the bus to arrive - exactly like the subway - rather than queuing up and paying one at a time. The stops are generally further apart, like an express or limited bus.
That’s it. They’re absolutely faster, as has been substantiated many times: M15 SBS: http://www.nyc.gov/html/ brt/downloads/pdf/201111_1st2nd_ progress_report.pdf Here’s the M34: http://www.nyc.gov/ html/brt/downloads/pdf/2012-0834th-sbs-newsletter.pdf Bx12 (Fordham Road) SBS: http:// www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/ pdf/ssi09_fordham_sbs.pdf Guess what - all three show decreased travel time, along with increased ridership. Let’s Ride The Rail
Dear Editor: Why is everyone not pushing for the Rockaway Beach Rail Line? We need to rebuild the abandoned Rockaway Beach line; it’s the way to go. Stimulate economic development like Allan Rosen (Rockaway Times 4/30/15) and many others are saying is just one of the reasons the train should be on the track right now. Just think of all the ridership. Isn’t that what it should be about! RBL All the way, yes!!

Mayor Miffed Because Train Was Late
Now he knows what the A train is like. Mayor Bill de Blasio was caught complaining about subway service when an email intended for his staff was inadvertently sent to a New York Times reporter. Oops. Seems that on Monday morning, the notoriously tardy mayor sent out an e-mail to some of his staffers after he was held up by subway delays. After the mayor had grown tired of waiting for an uptown A train, he decided to leave the platform and instead be driven
to his appointment. However, the mayor’s driver who had dropped him at the subway had already left, assuming that his boss had gotten on a train. The e-mail’s subject line read “2 problems today,” and in it the mayor griped with his underlings, scolding them for not confirming that he got on a train before the driver headed off and imploring them to come up with a better system for his travels. Apparently, de Blasio doesn’t like waiting for mass transit.

Rockaway Little League Pennant Races Taking Shape
Locals Shine For Kearney The Bishop Kearney track team ran well in two historic races this past weekend, the Penn Relays and the Semper Fi Marine Corps 5k. Co-captain Jackie Gallagher led the team in the 4x100 and 4x400 setting a personal best for the quarter mile leg in 67 seconds. The team of Tessy Gallagher, Lisa Fajardo, Kelsey Michalak and Jackie Gallagher competed against some of the best runners from around the country and finished in 6th place in their heat, just missing out on medals. The 4x100 team of Tiara Elcock, Jackie Gallagher, Kelsey Michalak and Colleen Gallagher finished 7th in their heat against a very competitive field, a tremendous learning experience for the team competing at such a high level. The following day the team
competed in the Marine Corps “Semper Fi” 5k race in Bay Ridge Cannonball Park. The Kearney Team came across the finish line 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. Jackie Gallagher again led the team with a personal best for the 3.1-mile race in a blazing time of 20 minutes 11 seconds and was followed closely behind by sister/co-captain Tessy in a time of 20 minutes 29 seconds. Senior/ co-captain Lisa Fajardo wasn’t deterred by a sore leg and came across the line with a time of 25 minutes 26 seconds. Kelsey Michalak and Jillian Villa both ran a personal best for the 5k. The team will now compete in the Brooklyn/Queens and City Championships in the coming weeks.
With the first week of May in the books, the Rockaway Little League pennant races began to take shape. Three teams remain undefeated: The Animal Hospital of the Rockaways Angels in Pee Wee Seniors (5-0), the Servpro Reds in Minor Boys (5-0) and the Metalman Sales Dodgers in Major Boys (4-0). The Pee Wee Seniors Angels have two 4-1 teams on their tails, the Laquila Group A’s and the Slices ‘N Ices Marlins. Likewise in Minor Boys, the Reds are followed close by the Ridgewood Bank White Sox and the onrockaway.com Pirates, both at 4-1. The Major Boys Dodgers are 4-0 with a cluster of team vying for second place. In the Minor Girls division, the Walsh Properties Orioles (4-1), Graybeards Reds (4-1) and the J&E Industries Phillies (5-2) are in a virtual tie for first place. The Major Girls division remains very tight with each team within one game of .500. The Knights of Columbus Reds and the Ram Title Royals have the early edge. Last week featured three stellar games, led by the R.F. Realty Orioles’ extra inning, 3-2 win over the Ram Title White Sox. In a pitching duel worthy of mid-season, the Sox’s Ian Byrne tossed five innings of one-

hit ball while the O’s trio of Donato Somerville, Timmy Mills and Thomas Resker held the White Sox to just two runs in eight innings. Dante DeSilva helped the cause with a good game in the field. Pat Powderly’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth sent the game to extra frames. Sean Peter Mullen singled home Resker with two outs in the bottom of the 8th inning to win the game. On Saturday, the onrockaway.com Pirates rebounded from a loss to the Lichtenstein Lions Braves earlier in the week by winning a tight game against the R.F. Realty Orioles 6-5. The Pirates were able to withstand a last breath rally by the Orioles to hold on for the victory. The Pirates opened the scoring in the top of the first when Daniel Green reached base following Nico Allen’s game opening walk by hitting into a force play. Green then used savvy baserunning to advance around the bases and score. The Orioles came right back in the bottom of the inning as James Resker and Thomas Resker used the same formula to advance themselves and score the tying and go ahead runs. The Pirates took the lead for good in the 3rd when Corey Schwach, Justin Continued on next page

Rockaway Little League Continued from previous page
Zweifler and Matt Rosenhaus demonstrated the importance of running out every ball in play when they each reached safely on their hustle to start the inning. The Pirates were able to convert that opportunity into five more runs as the top of the order drove them in with the big hit being Nick Galimi’s double. Starter Philly Benoit pitched four efficient innings and left with a 6-3 lead. Reliever John Ruoff pitched a quick 5th aided by Harry Charles’ running catch in left to end the inning. Ruoff ran into trouble in the 6th as the Orioles scored a run and loaded the bases with no outs
and threatened to grab a walk off win. Ruoff then bore down and retired the next three batters to close out the victory. The Pirate defense was anchored all game by first baseman Allen who made several nice stretches to record outs or save an error. In Minor Boys, the Ridgewood Bank White Sox outlasted the El Caribe Dodgers 14-11. Jack Conrath and Eddie Coye pitched for the Dodgers. Coyne also starred at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs batted in. Brendan Jones had a double and a run scored. Mike Papagainnakis was sharp in the field for the Caribe crew.
Sharpshooter Finalists
Although the headline team, The Harlem Magic Masters, put on quote a show, Rockaway showed it’s got plenty of young talent as some of the
best shooters on the peninsula turned out for the annual basketball sharpshooter contest at St. Francis de Sales in a Graybeard-sponsored event.
