Paddling Rockaway With NPS By Isabella Guerriero

From the beginning of July to the end of August, the National Park Service runs a program in Jamaica Bay offering kayaking to the public for free. For over 10 years, NPS has offered paddles multiple times a week, ranging from shorter trips for beginners who have never kayaked before, to longer mileage trips for more advanced paddlers. Jamaica Bay offers a unique experience, since it feels like a vacation in our own backyard. The bay is part of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, so the paddles give an opportunity to see birds, turtles, shrimp, fish, and so much

more. John Daskalakis, a park ranger who is part of the program, describes kayaking as both exercise but also meditative. He says, “When you’re on the water, you’re just doing this simple back and forth. There is something calming about that, even the wind and waves.” I went kayaking for the first time last summer but went for the first time in Jamaica Bay on Wednesday, July 6. We launched from Riis Landing. The experience is calming yet difficult, in that once you get the hang of how to paddle, it becomes easier and more relaxing. The tour guides are super helpful and will teach you specific ways to

improve your kayaking skills to make the experience more enjoyable. The entire morning felt like a mini vacation while being just 10 minutes from my house.

I recommend checking out future paddles, as they will be taking place until the end of August in the areas surrounding Jamaica Bay. Kayaks and paddles are provided. The next paddle from Riis Landing will be Friday, July 23 at 12:30 p.m. NPS also holds paddling for beginners every Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. from the Seaplane Ramp in Floyd Bennett Field. For more information, call the Gateway National Recreation Area at 718-758-3671.

ROCK! AWAY! SUMMER FEST ROCKS THIS WEEKEND Get ready to ROCK! AWAY! The Beach 97th concession will be the place to be this weekend with a three-day music extravaganza. The ROCK! AWAY! Music Fest has been rebranded as the ROCK! AWAY! Summer Fest. Max Power’s ROCK! AWAY! has been everywhere from the former Playland Motel, to the Rockaway Brewery, Riis Park and up to 25 venues across the peninsula since the music fest launched in 2017. With last year’s event cancelled due to the pandemic, Power has taken the time to rebrand for the relaunch. “With the pause from Covid, our 2020 was a major pivot and we quickly had to throw ourselves into the streaming realm and learn how to swim. As things were still uncertain with reopening this year we have rebranded as ROCK! AWAY! Summer Fest and are working on a new website and platform to feature the To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com

A Man With A Gift

I hope you know a Rudy. You know, there's a gift some people possess, no matter how often they share it. I mean, you can share money and things until you’re broke. But some people, share endlessly and they never run out of that thing, that thing that just makes others feel better. You can’t put your finger on it but when you see them, you just feel better. I don’t know if there’s a better thing a human can possess. Some people have an on/off switch and can light up a room and it’s a gift, for sure. But, funny enough, the ones I’m talking about, they don’t even try. They just do. First off, they look happy to see you. They remember your name, ask about your family. Make a little joke. You wish there were more people like this. And I met someone like this through basketball. I’ve said before I think basketball is the greatest game. I can trace every close relationship, every deep friendship, to the ball and the hoop. Basketball is six degrees of Kevin Bacon. Whether you’ve ever touched a basketball, if I know you, I can explain how basketball links us. But that’s another column. One of my lucky links came through the Graybeards and the Harlem Magic Masters, a basketball entertainment group. About fifteen years ago, The Graybeards hired the Magic Masters to put on a show for families and kids. The MC, the guy who got the crowd fired up, was a guy named Rudy. The

Page 5

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2021

show was so good the Magic Masters were invited back every year. Rudy didn’t just come back every year, he started coming back all the time. He liked the whole Rockaway – Graybeards thing so much he’d come to games and other events. Eventually, he joined the Graybeards basketball league and everyone knew at once the guy had game. He could shoot, pass, he could do it all. But I’d say his top skill was being a great teammate. He’d offer constant encouragement to his guys, all the while busting his ass out there. The guy’s not a saint. If you were on the opposing team, he’d hack and hold you all game long. (I’m just speaking from experience). You didn’t want to play against him, but you’d want him on your team. Or better, you’d want to be on his team. And though lots of guys wanted to be on his team, even more guys wanted to be his friend. And why not? He’d make you feel better. The league is on hold as gym time and other matters sort themselves out in the post-pandemic era so we’re still working on memories. And I remember… Rudy made the rounds after games asking guys if they’d want water or a beer. He’d be the one making sure the gym wasn’t left a mess. He’d rebound for kids who wanted to take some shots after the games were done. I biked into Brownsville a couple years back to check out a tournament he was helping run.

He’d just turned 60 or 61 and was out there reffing games all damn day in a hot July sun. Doing good, in plain sight, while no one was looking. Rudy grew up in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy and so, it happens, did my father-inlaw, Bob, a generation before. At Graybeard games, Bob, in his early 80s, would sit, to the side, often by himself just to watch the games. Without fail, Rudy

would take a seat next to him and they’d talk about Bed-Stuy and this street and that street. And where good games were played. And they’d talk a little about life, too. Sometimes Rudy would call him on the phone just to say hello and see how things were going. When Bob died a few years ago, Rudy came to the funeral. And then he took the ride to the cemetery on Long Island. At the conclusion of the burial site service, I looked over to see Rudy extending his arm so he could assist Bob’s wife, Joan, back to the limousine. Joan said goodbye to her husband Bob and took Rudy’s arm and they walked solemnly, beautifully, back to the waiting car. That’s one you don’t forget. And get this, he’ll call Joan from time to time to check in on her. Now it turns out, the guy who makes everyone else feel good is not feeling too good, himself. I hope he knows he’s got a lot of guys on his team who love him and need him back. Rudy, get well. We got one more game.

Thrilla in Camilla Returns Friday By Katie McFadden

The bouts are back! After a hiatus due to the pandemic last year, Thrilla in Camilla is returning with some great matchups between New York’s bravest and Massachusetts police agencies, a special Xavier vs. Xaverian grudge match, and a local grudge match featuring two stand-up guys that are taking to the ring, all for a good cause to help America’s heroes. It all goes down this Friday, July 16. Like a fire engine stopping at a burning home, last year’s pandemic put FDNY Boxing events at a screeching halt. Competitors were flown in from around the county to take on FDNY Boxing in a near sold-out show at Madison Square Garden on March 15. As the state and city shut down, so did hopes of duking it out at the Garden and all of the fighters from departments in Boston to Chicago, San Francisco to Seattle, were all told to go home. The fight was off. Same went for last year’s Thrilla

in Camilla. However, it wasn’t a total loss for the main reason these fighters get together each year. “We had sold out the Garden in March 2020 and had that canceled a day before. We had flown everyone in and put out all the advertising. It was tough to recover from,” FDNY Boxing president Bobby McGuire said. “But luckily, a lot of the fans were so generous that they chose to donate the ticket cost to the charities we raise money for, and we were able to give $20K to each for an event that didn’t even happen.” As restrictions have eased, the fight is on! For the first time in two years, FDNY Boxing will resume on home turf at Friday’s event in the parking lot of St. Camillus (185 Beach 99th Street). Gates open at 6 p.m. and the action starts around 7 p.m. There will be food trucks and drinks for sale. And with 12 action-packed bouts, it’s not going to be one to miss. And it will all be for the same

two charities. During the intermission, the night’s beneficiaries will be honored. For years, Thrilla in Camilla has helped Building Homes for Heroes, which builds mortgage free, handicap accessible homes for veterans returning home with severe injuries, and recently received the highest rating possible from Charity Navigator. Friday’s event will honor United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Matthew Benny, who hopes to receive a new home through the program in WoodRidge, NJ. Lance Corporal Benny served in Iraq during the Battle of Fallujah in 2004 and was left with physical and psychological injuries. He struggles with chronic PTSD, a traumatic brain injury, migraines, pain in his neck, lower back and shins, degeneration of his cervical intervertebral disc and more. Lance Corporal Benny will be at the event on Friday, where he will be honored. Additionally, this year, Thrilla in Camilla will benefit the Matt

McDevitt Children’s Education Fund. Matt McDevitt was a NYC Firefighter who recently lost his battle with a rare cancer. He left behind his wife Jackie, and two beautiful children under the age of five. “We owe our freedom to the brave men and women of our military, including the 1,400 members of the FDNY who are veterans or military reservists,” McGuire said. “We also need to help our fallen FDNY family members who are often exposed to toxic atmospheres and many succumb as a result of that exposure, long after the fire has been extinguished. As first responders, giving back is in our DNA and our team believes in raising funds for charity through spirited competition.” Some of the fight highlights include a highly-anticipated bout between Nicole Malpeso of Eng. 76, who has a 12-2 record and recently won the Championship of the Annual Atlanta Classic Continued on page 7

THRILLA IN CAMILLA RETURNS FRIDAY Continued from Page 6 and Ashleigh Moore, a decorated amateur boxer with a 10-1 record representing the Mass. State Troopers. There are also some big grudge matches. The first grudge match, for the first time ever, is a high school rivalry match between Jimmy McGovern of Xavier and Jeremiah Ryan of Xaverian. The FDNY grudge matches will follow with Dan Palmieri of Lad. 169 vs. Gary Schmidt of Lad 17 and Capt. Chris Livolsi of Lad. 114 vs. John Cadott of EMS Station #4. However, as usual, one of the most anticipated fights of the night for Rockaway will be the local grudge match. This year, retired Local 79 construction worker, Rich Pontieri, who duked it out with Robbie Salmon in 2019 and reigned champion within seconds, is coming back for round two, this time with one of New York Strongest’s strongest— New York City Sanitation Deputy Chief James McGovern.

Page 7

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2021 Pontieri says this matchup came about right after his 2019 fight. “I was in RBQ with Jimmy, and we had had a few drinks and we know this is a great cause, so we shook hands and said next year, we’re gonna fight. Unfortunately, Covid hit, or we would’ve had this fight last summer. I found out two months ago it was on and I texted Jimmy in a playful manner saying, ‘you have two months to get ready’ and here we are, a few days away,” he said. Pontieri says he expects this match to be solid. “Jimmy’s unbelievably tough. He’s a worthy opponent. Hopefully I’ll survive,” he said. However, he also sang his opponent’s praises. “Jimmy is a Sanitation boss. He’s a hero. He was the catalyst to get us through Hurricane Sandy when they were trying to figure out where to put all the garbage. He came up with the idea of using the Riis Park lot. He was named Irish Man of the Year and got an award

at City Hall. He’s done a lot for this town. He’s an unbelievably generous guy,” Pontieri said. And both honorable men know it’s all for a good cause. “This helps firemen and soldiers, so whatever I can do to help, whether it’s help sell tickets or get in the ring, I’ll do it,"

Pontieri said. "People look for the local grudge match and with Covid and finally lifting restrictions, as long as the weather is good, this year is going to be incredible and there will be more people and more money raised and to be a part of that is humbling. This is all for a great cause. May the best man win, and we’ll grab a beer after.” Thrilla in Camilla wouldn’t be possible without its sponsorship from local unions, restaurants and bars, plus community support. Tickets for the event are $30 for General Admission, $50 Ringside and $100 p.p. for VIP Tables. They can be purchased in advance at www.FDNYBoxing. com or at the gate on Friday. A “Black n Blue” after party will be held at Whit’s End on Beach 97th Street. The after-party is BYOB.

***** It might not be a word, but this summer's weather is underratedly bad. ***** And then there were ten. At the start, we had to consider more than 1,300 photos which were submitted to the (fantastic!) Rockaway Times Photo Contest and after many rounds, nine judges eventually settled on a Top 30 and those photos were made poster-sized and placed on the boardwalk railing around Beach 95th Street. Next, we had the nearly impossible task of selecting the ten best. Our Facebook page has more than 20,000 followers so we asked them to help. From Facebook and original judge selections we now have a Top 10 (see page 19). The winner will be chosen on Friday, July 30. Stay tuned!

***** Rippers will be rocking. Although music has been limited so far this summer, the Wild Yaks will make up for some of it this Saturday starting at 5 p.m. See Marina’s story on Page 16. ***** Some more proof that the worker shortage is real. Elegante Pizzeria will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for the time being because they just can’t find people to take the shifts. ***** After an uproar over a proposed ramp/walkway design in Neponsit and Belle Harbor, State Senator Joe Addabbo issued a statement: "While I appreciate the efforts of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), I would urge them to consider the concerns of my constituents with regards to the concrete path and cross-over ramp proposals, as they continue to move forward with other aspects of the project improvements. I believe the proposed path and ramp warrant reconsideration. I share the valid concerns of my constituents

and know that the issues related to the ramp and path, such as safety, must be evaluated, along with other reasonable alternatives. I look forward to working with my colleagues on all levels of government, the USACE and residents to expeditiously address this matter." ***** You never know what battles might be fought online. Maurice Murphy has been raving about New Park Pizza in Broad Channel. Others are insistent that the place is in Howard Beach. We’ve sent out a team or reporters to get to the bottom of this. ***** The 18th annual Graybeards Family Run will return this year on Friday, July 30, after being canceled last year due to COVID restrictions. The evening will begin with children's races of varying lengths along Rockaway Beach Blvd. at 6:30 p.m. An inspirational run by Rockaway's Special Athletes will follow at 6:45 p.m. The 1 Mile Run is next at 7 p.m. and then the marquee 5k Run at 7:15 p.m. Post-race festivities will be in St. Francis

de Sales Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard, and includes food, beverages, children's activities, awards, raffles, and live music. In person registration is available at St. Francis on July 24, 1012, July 25 10-1, July 29 6-8, and on the day of the race, July 30 4-6. Please see the ad on Page 10 for info. ***** The Cristin Mullen run is Saturday, July 17. Cristin was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2008. It did not deter her from living an active full life until she passed on December 17, 2020. From CYO at St Francis de Sales to Bishop Kearney to Iona to St Francis College she competed with great passion. See Pages 13 and 15 for info. ***** The bureaucracy of so many city agencies is just disheartening. We echo the sentiments of those who are frustrated by the State Liquor Authority’s dillydallying. The concessions (other than Beach 97th) are still waiting for SLA’s approval. It’d be nice to have a sangria at Caracas; a beer at Rippers.

Designed to Scare Dear Editor:

While stuck at home during the pandemic, I developed a bad habit. I watch the ABC evening local and national news. Conservatives like the late Rush Limbaugh have long accused the mainstream media of being biased toward the left. I often hear the ABC reporters inject editorializing comments like "outrageous," and recognizing this bias, I ignore it. But this past Monday evening, ABC crossed the line, in my opinion. They led with a story that the Johnson & Johnson Covid

Page 9

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2021 vaccine may be linked with 100 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in those who received the J&J vaccine. That is, 100 cases out of 13,000,000 vaccines given. The CDC is investigating the cases as possibly linked to the vaccination, but even if there is a link, the risk of getting GBS from the vaccine is 0.0007%. GBS has been linked to other vaccines over the years, including flu vaccine, albeit it at a minuscule risk. So, while NYC (you and me) pays for PSA ads on ABC telling people to get vaccinated, ABC chooses to lead its evening national news with a story designed to scare the crap out of those benighted people who refuse to get the vaccine. It makes me wonder who is making programming decisions at ABC, and why. Dr. Peter Galvin

community more resilient to storms and more accessible to the disabled are vital, but their planning must be an inclusive process with input from all those affected. The concrete path and ramps proposed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) must be reconsidered. It is an outrage that The Rockaway Civic Association, Belle Harbor Property Owners Association and the Neponsit Property Owners Association were excluded from the foundational steps of this process. Our community must always move forward, but we must do it together. I know the need for our peninsula to become further protected from future storms. However, the USACE’s proposal to place a concrete path and cross-over ramps at the foot of beach streets in Rockaway Park, Reconsider, Belle Harbor and Neponsit, USACE or any project which bears such great impact on the quality of life within the afDear Editor: Projects that will make our fected communities, carries

with it a responsibility for essential community input and approval. I understand and respect the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and why it was written, but the USACE’s current plan is potentially dangerous, considering the design, which presents dangers of becoming a freeway for e-bikes, scooters and other issues at the entrance of beach blocks, making the plan unsafe for residents gaining access to the beach with their children, baby carriages and beach wagons. After discussing the issue with Belle Harbor Property Owners Association President Paul King, I am confident that if the USACE works with the community groups and hears their concerns, an alternative can be found that will satisfy the needs of all parties while maintaining focus on improved safety and accessibility. Growing Green With Edgemere Farm By Dan Guarino

Like finding surfers in a city full of skyscrapers, Edgemere Farm is its own unique ‘discovery’ in Rockaway’s corner of New York. Now the productive half-acre at the corner of Beach 45th Street and Beach Channel Drive is about to be known worldwide, featured on the cover of “Urban Farmers: The Now (and How) Of Growing Food in the City,” a new book that takes a dive into urban agriculture worldwide from German publisher Gestalten. Edgemere Farm will be celebrating with a book release event on Saturday, July 17, from 2-4 p.m. “We’ll have music, food by The Cradle restaurant, refreshments and more,” Mike Repasch-Nieves said. Volunteer Repasch-Nieves and wife, Vanessa Seis, manage Edgemere’s overall operations, are featured on the book’s cover. Since 2013, the farm has be-

berg. Dozens of chickens produce organic eggs, while kept bees supply fresh-from-the-hive honey. Edgemere hosts volunteer farmers during the week and opens its Farmstand to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. They also offer organic items made by farm volunteers with botanicals grown on right on the farm. There’s Rockaway Bread, made by Nick Cregor, Erin Mulholland’s Edgemere Scoops ice cream, Kimchee NYC by Leslie Hong, scented candles and more. “We grow a lot of things here you can’t get everywhere,” Repasch-Nieves explained. “What we grow goes into so many different kinds of cuisines. So we get everyone from Jamaican grandmas in the neighborhood coming to get their fresh callaloo, to people from the west end to people from the city (who’ve never been here before).” Edgemere also supplies numerous peninsula eateries. These include The Cradle, Brothers, Cuisine by Claudette, Whit’s End, Super Burrito, Greenhouse RBNY at the Rockaway Hotel, Breezy BBQ, Rockaway Tiki Bar, C&C Jerk Box and Seany Slices, plus Ops pizza restaurant in Brooklyn. They’ve also worked with the Rockaway Buying Club, and during the pandemic, with Rockaway Mutual Aid to get healthy, fresh produce to Rockaway families in need, with these efforts ongoing.

Doing a sustainability “360,” Repasch-Nieves explains, with Claudette’s “we’re taking all their food waste- celery stalks, lemon peels, etc., to feed our chickens.” Also Bright Eye Beer in Long Beach, “brings us all their excess grain,” he says. The farm itself sits on NYC Parks land and operates under a contract with the City. It began as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s anti-obesity initiative, which included bringing fresh, healthy fare to so-called “food deserts” like Rockaway. It was originally run by David Selig and Matt Sheehan, and by Heidi Woolever for a time. “My wife and I started volunteering in 2019,” Repasch-Nieves recalled. “Matt was looking to ‘retire’ out and asked if we wanted to get more involved! We’ve been learning as we go.” Now that the pandemic is

We’re trying to grow it at home!” His mom, Jennifer, added they’ve been visiting years. “We used to come to the Cowboy Breakfast,” she said. “We like it, that there’s a farm in NYC. RISE Pickling Workshop THE CRISTIN MULLEN RUN and Plant Swap By Liam Lachner, Community Outreach Coordinator and NYC Civic Corps Member

Recently, the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) hosted two separate events to kick off the summer season. The first event was a Pickling Workshop which took place on Wednesday, June 23. The second was a Plant Swap which took place on Saturday, June 26. Both events were led by Joyce Artis, who is a former Far Rockaway resident and has been a part of RISE's volunteer group for the past six years. Joyce has volunteered her time to assist RISE’s Farm Share Program in the past and she has also led RISE’s first ever Pickling Workshop a few years ago. We decided to schedule this workshop during the third week of RISE’s Farm Share Program. This gave our members an opportunity to participate in the workshop when they came by to pick up their produce that day. During this workshop Joyce instructed participants on how they can create their own delicious refrigerator pickles to take home and enjoy. This is a great new

Our partner Sang Lee Farms was kind enough to provide us with some extra cucumbers and radishes for the workshop. RISE volunteers helped cut up and peel the produce, while Joyce brewed up a few pitchers of pickling brine. The workshop had a good turnout with members from our Farm Share coming by to pickle some of the vegetables that they received that day and to learn how they can make their own brine at home. The Plant Swap was the first that RISE has ever hosted. It was a very nice communal event where participants came down to RISE’s garden and exchanged plants with one another. We set up a shady area where participants could stand around or sit and discuss their plants or gardening techniques. By the end of the event our participants swapped out one of their plants and went home with a new plant from someone else. The Plant Swap had a really great turnout and even better weather, making it another great event. For more events please visit our website at riserockaway.org.

Running for Cristin Mullen

By Katie McFadden

On Saturday, July 17, Rockaway will remember the “Angel of the Boardwalk” with something she loved—running. Cristin Mullen left this world too soon, but she left an impact that will not be forgotten. This year’s Rockapulco Run is being held in her honor. Cristin Mullen was known for frequently running the boardwalk, whether it was on her own time or for one of the many Rockapulco Run events throughout the year. She also participated in triathlons. As an avid swimmer, the Riis Park lifeguard was an all-around stellar athlete. Cristin also loved children and worked as a District 27 special education teacher. She was described as someone with a heart of gold by her many, many friends. Cristin was a true Rockaway girl. And on Saturday, Rockaway will remember her with a memorial run. In 2008, Mullen was diagnosed with epilepsy. Despite her diagnosis, she lived an active life. In recent years, her condition had worsened. Medications increased, as did tests. “It knocked the hell out of her,” John Edwards, Mullen’s former CYO track coach and founder of Rockapulco Run said. “But she

say it’s hard to lose a child and I can’t even imagine the pain,” Edwards said, who added Cristin was between the age of his own two daughters. “This race is a big thing and I hope it can help the Mullen family deal with their grief.” On Saturday, July 17 at 10 a.m., Rockaway will run for Cristin, along the same boardwalk she ran. The event will include a 5K run, a one-mile run/walk and kiddie runs for the kids, as Cristin would have loved. Day-of registration (starting at 9 a.m.) and the after-party will take place at the St. Rose of Lima Schoolyard (130 Beach 84th Street). All proceeds from the event will go toward St. Rose of Lima School so that Cristin’s legacy can continue to help children in a parish that is near and dear to the hearts of the Mullen family. The after-party for the event, at around 11 a.m., will include a DJ, a barbecue provided by kept a smile on her face, and she the Knights of Columbus, libawas a cheerful kid.” On Decem- tions, and to help raise funds, a ber 17, 2020, Mullen died unex- 50/50 and raffles for some great pectedly due to epilepsy complications. All registered runners and walkers will receive a special Cristin Mullen run t-shirt, designed by St. James Clothing. Registration for the 5K or onemile walk/run is just $30 and can be done online at www.Rockapulcorun.com or the morning of the race. So far, more than 130 people have signed up for the event and Edwards expects more. “Hopefully we’ll get good weather and it’ll be a great day and we’ll remember Cristin and raise some money for a great cause,” Edwards said. “I know there’s going to be some teary eyes on Saturday, but this is one of the things Cristin loved to do.”

DROWNING COMMISSION BILL PASSES STATE LEGISLATURE prevent drowning on our peninsula. I urge Governor Cuomo to sign this bill so that we can get to work on water safety.” "According to the American Red Cross, ten people die each day from unintentional drowning. Statistics show these tragedies disproportionately affect low-income and black and brown communities, and oftentimes are preventable when the right resources and education are made available to families," Senator Tim Kennedy said. "With the creation of this Commission, New York is underscoring a commitment to better protecting our children and to water safety overall." This bill now awaits the signature of Governor Andrew Cuomo before it becomes law. This bill is one of two water safety bills Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato has introduced - the first, A.728, would require water safety to be taught as a part of school curriculums throughout New York State.

This Saturday: WILD YAKS LIVE AT RIPPERS By Marina Cregan

If you’re looking to enjoy live music with ocean views this weekend, then Rippers concession at Beach 86th Street is the place to be. On Saturday, July 17, kicking off at 5 p.m., the Wild Yaks will be performing songs from their upcoming LP, which features live performances from their last rip-roaring show at Rippers in October 2019. Band members, Jose Aybar, Rob Bryn, Martin Cartagena, Patsy Carroll, Gio Kincade, and Matt Walsh, have been playing together since 2007 and use inspiration from living in the Rockaways throughout all of their songs. Walsh said that it is important for the band to play at Rippers for their first show since before the pandemic, because the event will be a great way to bring the community together to see all the talent this peninsula has to offer. Saturday’s show will be a promotion launch for the Wild Yaks’ live album, “Live at Rippers.” The band thought it was fitting to have their first performance at the place that inspired the album. This is the fifth LP for the band, but their first full live album. Lead vocalist, Rob Bryn, said, “Almost all of the songs grew out of moments that happened in Rockaway. And to perform them at Rippers on the altar of

blood from which so many of these things sprang is strange and amazing.” Bryn had brought the idea of creating a live album to the band, and they all immediately jumped at the idea. They recorded about six or seven of their shows, and all agreed the October 2019 show at Rippers was best for their album. “Live at Rippers” is co-issued on vinyl by Open Ocean and Ernest Jenning Record Company, with the album cover created by Rockaway local artist, Roy Miranda. Guitarist, Matt Walsh, is also cofounder of Open Ocean, a non-profit, which produces and creates vinyls that are distributed on a gift basis. The idea behind Open Ocean is not necessarily to seek out bands and sell vinyls. With Open Ocean, Walsh hopes to involve the community in a way for creative people throughout the peninsula to come together. Walsh said vinyl has a lasting, bonding component that no digital playlist can offer. “Nobody is going to inherit their parents’ Spotify playlists. A vinyl record has lasting value beyond our lifetime. We want it to exist in the future because it will become a part of how we look back and see ourselves. physical objects to care for.” We make an extra effort to deThe live album will be availasign and hand print our records ble for sale to the public startourselves. All vinyls were created in Rockaway Beach, throwing it back to the fact that much of their own music was inspired by life on the peninsula. The band’s music portrays an original style of punk rock, with instrumentals highlighting each musician’s talent, reinforced with passionate vocals. Walsh told The Rockaway Times that the band thrives off the audience’s energy, creating an environment where everyone can dance and enjoy themselves while listening to

their music. Bryn said in an interview with Rockaway-based writer, Matt Johnson, “When you have the support of the audience, this is something we’re doing together, this is not a practice. We’re not in a practice space. You guys, your energy, what you’re giving, what you’re offering is making this together.” This album encapsulates the band’s passion for the music, as well as the rush from being at a live show, making listeners feel like they are actually there. The Wild Yaks are excited to come back to the Rippers stage and perform for the community. This celebratory show promoting their new album is just one way of showing the community what being a Rockaway local is all about.

I, like she did, want to let my friends know cancer isn’t a scary unknown, it’s a monster we all need to fight, but the more we know about it the easier it will be to get the best of. Peace and Love to all! – James Tubridy

SPOTTED: Park Slope

Acclaimed author Jill Eisenstadt knows a picture is worth a thousand words so instead of writing gripping prose about how much she loves The Rockaway Times, she just sent a photo of herself rocking a Rockaway Times hoodie in Park Slope. Of course, this will only serve to confuse people who think Rockaway is part of Brooklyn. Looking good, Jill! To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030

THE ROCKAWAY TIMES PHOTO CONTEST THE TOP 10! This was tough! At the start, we had to consider more than 1,300 photos which were submitted to The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. After many rounds, nine judges eventually settled on a Top 30 and those photos were made poster-sized

and placed on the boardwalk railing around Beach 95th Street. Next, we had the nearly impossible task of selecting the ten best. Our Facebook page has more than 20,000 followers so we asked them to help. From the pictures with the most

votes, we were able to pick three to be included among the top 10. From Facebook and original judge selections we now have that Top 10. Congratulations to our semi-finalists! The winner, second and third place will be chosen on Friday,

Facts You Probably Don’t Need FACTORS IN CHOOSING A BROKER Some people choose their real estate broker based upon reputation/word of mouth. There’s nothing wrong with this approach EXCEPT that occasionally the choice is made without thorough due diligence; without interviewing more than one broker. The sale of a house is frequently one of the biggest transactions in a person’s lifetime. When people buy cars, they often check with more than one dealer. It’s called capitalism! There are many factors to consider in the choice of a real estate broker: Compatibility – Does the broker “care” about you? Does the broker respond in a timely fashion to your calls, answer your questions, address your problems/concerns?

Expertise – Does the broker have thorough knowledge of the local market? Advertising Budget – Does the broker advertise in newspapers, Trulia, Zillow, Street Easy, on the internet? Does the broker use 3-D virtual photography? Honesty/Integrity – Many brokers advertise that they have the highest integrity. Look at their ads: Do they use “bait and switch” advertising? Creating a Positive Attitude

“You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.” — Joyce Meyer What a wonderful world we live in and yet we are surrounded by such negativity and darkness. How does one stay positive with such negative energy and suppression? Stress, sadness, trauma, loss of a loved one can really bring a person down. It is not so easy to put on a happy face when in fact you are sad and lonely. There are some easy ways to create a positive life. For one thing, stay more present. Yes, you have heard it many times in this column, and we will al-

ways continue to remind and encourage you to stay in the moment. It is a blissful moment when you are present. Letting go of the past is something that will free your mind. It’s ok to visit the past but try not to cling to it. Remember, honor and then move on. There are no guarantees in life. We have today so live it well and be content. My Mom always said to me, “Be content and you will always be happy.” The best advice I ever received. Helping a person who is not so happy is a great service in life. Holding space for them and sending loving prayers their way will help pave the way to

happiness. Sharing your positive energy with someone who is going through rough times is a gift. We are meant to share and support one another especially during challenging times. I have a sister, Janet Fash, who is a ball of positive energy. When she enters a room, she brings laughter and cheer to everyone. She was born like this. For as long as I can remember, Janet has been full of life and happy go lucky. She is also someone who shares her positive energy with those who need it. She will make you laugh and sometimes cry! She has a heart of gold. My best friend in life who knows all my secrets. Moving your body and keeping active is a great way to keep your energy positive. Surrounding yourself with good friends and family is also a valuable tool. In Rockaway, Breezy, Roxbury and Broad Channel, we are a community that supports

and helps one another. Reach out to a neighbor and ask for help if you need it. Most people I know are more than willing to spend time with a person who needs comfort. “Each morning night’s curtain opens on a new day. You are invited to join the great opening. Open your ears. Open your heart. Open your eyes to the sacred path you travel every day, the path of the hours. Greet the hours with joyful awareness. Greet the hours with faithful presence. Greet the hours with a reverential bow. Greet the hours with a sacred pause. Reverence each hour as a small stepping stone on your pilgrimage through the day. Receive the gift of seven sacred pauses. Practice waking up seven times a day.” ~Macrina Wiederkehr (This column was first published in July 2018)

Chatting Fills Void Dear Enchantress,

Page 31

THURSDAY, JULY 15, 2021

Here is the problem, I have recently, for like six months, been flirting with this guy online. We met in a Facebook group about our favorite music and first we started chatting a ton about the band etc. Then it went to messenger. Now I'm obsessed, and he seems to be, too. We look forward to exchanging messages every day. We have never spoken on the phone. It seemed innocent, and maybe it is? But it feels like cheating? What should I do?

I'm walking around feeling like the worst and baddest girl ever, yet I am so in a life of pleasure that I haven't ever known! I've been with my boyfriend/husband for 20 years. We're technically not married, but we've been living together forever and dating since high school. If I were really really honest, we're more like brother and sister– we are not sexual at all. Maybe we're like amazing roommates. It's easy for us to Dear Bad Bert, be together, everyone knows us Aren't humans interesting? together, kind of like Bert and Ernie (do you know them?) So If our needs are not being met that's not even the problem. in one place, we will natural-

ly seek them out somewhere else. It's like if you're starving, the primal instinct is to go get food, to hunt and to gather. It's normal. You are normal. I understand the feelings of cheating, and I also see that the boyfriend/husband and you sound like you have needs that are not being met. And it's more convenient than anything else let alone passionate or emotionally for either of you. With that being said, would you be ok if your boyfriend/husband were doing the same? Also, you didn't mention what your conversations and messages are like with the keyboard crusader. I imagine they are more intimate than you're accustomed to, which may be a friendship? And you are so used to not having any intimacy with your B/H that it seems like cheating. I would advise you to check in with yourself about the actual content of your conversations, and separately, what is in your head. Would you show your messages to a trusted friend?

Or are they so over the top, x-rated etc. In the end, is it possible that you make it ok that you have a friend? And a bigger question, can you find a way to clear this with your B/H (in your own words) "I'm so grateful for Facebook, there are so many people and new friends I've made on there, and I'm grateful for you because....." and share something about him. And see what he says. Good Luck Sister! And cheers to your friends from far and near. To ask Shane a question, email her at support@enchantedembodiment.com

Sandcastles Galore & More On Sunday, June 11, the NYC extra fun with beachballs and Department of Parks and Recre- other giveaways. The field includation held a sandcastle contest that brought kids to adults and families together to create castles, turtles and more out of sand. The contest is a little preview of what’s to come as aspiring sand artists will have a chance to show off their skills again with The Rockaway Times’ sandcastle contest on Sunday, August 1. An overcast afternoon kept temperatures cooler as the sand artists got to work on Sunday on Beach 117th Street. Rockaway Administrator for NYC Parks Eric Peterson hosted this event along with the help of Parks’ summer interns. About 10 groups signed up 19-month old Brayden with his first for the contest, which was made sandcastle.

ed some more experienced sand creators and some who made their very first castle, like Castle Brayden, made by 19-month-old Brayden, with a little help from his parents. In the youth group, Frankie, Shade, Harry and Walsh came in first for their castle that featured the drip technique and seashells. Uri and Shua Paneth came in second for their sea turtle. In the family category, the Lynch family’s “Temple of Champions” earned them first place. In the adult category, Anna and Lola’s octopus castle made them the winners. All winners received mini trophies and bragging rights as castle kings and queens. Congratulations to all the winners and participants

and to the NYC Parks Department for putting on the event. Don’t put those buckets and shovels away yet! The contest was a nice preview of what’s to come on Sunday, August 1 with The Rockaway Times’ 5th Annual Sandcastle Contest. The event will feature (hopefully) even bigger castles and sculptures with chances to win bigger prizes including trophies and gift certificates to local businesses. There will be three age categories: 8 & Under, 9 to 17, and the adult category for ages 18 and older. All are welcome to register and join the day of on Beach 117th Street. Keep an eye out for more details in the weeks ahead in The Rockaway Times newspaper.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Law and medicine are irrevocably bound together. By the term law, I mean laws enacted by politicians that have effects on peoples’ health. Take, for example, laws and rules made during the COVID-19 pandemic. In just the first half of 2020, more than 1,000 laws and orders were issued by federal, state, and local authorities in the US in an effort to reduce disease transmission. Legal interventions included stay-at-home orders, mask mandates, and travel restrictions as well as more specific rules for business operations, alcohol sales, curfews, and health care. Given their heavy use, importance, and obvious socioeconomic side effects, one would have expected the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other research funders to start studies to determine not just the effectiveness of the rules and laws, but also to determine

Study Is Required the right mix to control disease transmission while inflicting the minimum amount of harm on the population. But no such organized research programs have emerged. The NIH pumped $3.6 trillion into COVID-19 biomedical research and billions more into vaccine development. But funding for scientific evaluation of the legal and health effects of these rules was paltry, at a time when hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives were affected, as was the socioemotional development of children and the viability of our economy. Amazingly, between 1985 and 2014, the NIH funded just 510 research grants to study the effects of laws and enforcement practices on the health of the population – less than 0.25% of all funded grants. It is past time for broad recognition that law is a ubiquitous treatment to which hundreds of millions of people are exposed. Laws are not pills and cannot be developed, pretested, dosed, and delivered like

pills. The best method to study the use and safety of medications is via a prospective, randomized, controlled trial (RCT). But this method does not translate to laws – laws and their effects must be studied after enactment. For example, were lockdowns effective at reducing COVID-19 disease and death? There are opinions on both sides of this question. Some states that didn’t lock down had lower death rates than some states that did. But the answer is not that simple – other factors such as population density and the use of mass transit must be accounted for. The only way to know for sure is to study all the factors. We know from excellent research on the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic that control measures face political and social resistance. The usefulness of any control measure would depend not on its potential effectiveness under ideal conditions, but rather on its functioning and effects in the typical conditions of real

life. Such insights, and evidence on the effects of specific laws, help policymakers make better choices, improve implementation, and have confidence in weathering opposition. We need carefully controlled, retrospective research using actual data to answer essential questions: how to increase compliance with masking and other mandates, how to understand costs and benefits for closing schools starting in pre-k, how to reduce in-person contact in commercial and social situations without disproportionately harming low-wage workers in the service industry, and whether and how to regulate travel. Failure to reduce uncertainty on these and other points in the aftermath of Covid will cost us dearly again in the future. After all, as we finally leave the treatment room for Covid, we enter the waiting room for the next pandemic. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

A Night At The Opera In Queens By Theresa M Racine

On Wednesday, June 30, I attended the Queens Symphony Orchestra’s “A Night at the Opera” at Russo’s On the Bay. This free even featured soprano, Yulan Piao, tenor Alessio Borraggine and conductor, Martin Majkut. Let me begin with Alessio Borraggine. He is a Roman native and one of today's up-and-coming Italian lirico-spinto tenors. Borraggine has been heard in many prestigious venues such as the Musikverein in Vienna. His voice was so beautiful to listen to. I loved the way he presented the stories. Borraggine is charming and comical and very likeable. Yulan Piao, a Korean-Chinese soprano, engaged in the role of Cio-Cio in Madam Butterfly. She has won many competitions. Piao’s voice is a pleasure to listen to. Opera News spoke of her being extremely sympathetic on stage and phrasing with care and feeling and showing the very lovely lyric voice. Her career is going far from what I see. Martin

Majkut, who serves as the music director and conductor, has been with the orchestra for around four years. He graduated from the state conservatory. He also served as an assistant Conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic while earning his PHD in conducting at the Academy of Performing Arts. You can tell he is very serious, and he is very involved with the audience. There is perfection in his art. I really enjoyed watching him create magic with his orchestra baton. Everything just flowed that night. The Queens Sympathy Orchestra was greeted with at least 100 or more guests at Russo Bay in Howard Beach. I spoke with Kenichi Wilson, board president for the Queens Symphony Orchestra. He does not get paid. All he does is from his heart and a love of music. Though not a musician, Wil-

son has an eye for how everything should be set up. This event was funded by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with city councilman Erich Ulrich. For a small event, it could cost up to $43,000. The members of the orchestra are longtime members. They do get paid and usually far less than what they normally would. They are all tenors. The Orchestra continues to be in need of corporate sponsors. Con Ed is one. They also get help from grants. But like everything else in this world,

to continue the programming so that they do not become extinct, they need your help. To find out more, visit: QueenSymphony.org. By showing up and helping with financial support, they can continue to do more like going into schools for educational events. They hold big events in the parks about four times a year. On a smaller scale, they can do a salon concert in small venues such as the Yacht Club. The orchestra is here to stay. Their home is in Queens so you will find them anywhere across the borough.

The Foodie Report: Last Stop By Scott Ruscillo

I would like to thank The Rockaway Times for the opportunity to write a food column where I will highlight some of my favorite local eateries and occasionally speak about some out-of-town favorites as well. Feel free to follow me on Facebook or Instagram to see some dishes that I post and review. My handle on each social media platform is my name (Scott Ruscillo) I believe food can be considered a type of universal language. Each culture throughout the world has its own food favorites and ingredients that they prefer. Annually I visit roughly 30 to 60 different restaurants and take photos of dishes and drinks, often reviewing what I enjoyed most about them. I am a huge fan of Bourbon/whiskey and cocktails. Many of my food posts also include photos of the drinks that I enjoy when visiting a restaurant or bar. For the past six years, I have also made it a point to strongly support local businesses, especially restaurants. I have forged some great relationships with restaurant owners and employees locally and out of Rockaway. My mission is to always give honest reviews and when things may not go well, I make sure I privately speak to the manager or owner to make them aware. I continually stress to everyone to never bash or write negative reviews until you first reach out to a manager or owner. I’ve realized 95% of the time, a manager or owner will be glad you made

them aware of an issue and they can then make sure that it is addressed so you are satisfied. Speaking to managers or owners also helps restaurants to make necessary improvements that they may not have been aware of previously. Well now on to the good stuff! Last Stop is a comfortable, quaint restaurant located on Beach 116th Street in Rockaway Park. It resembles exactly what you would expect in a sleepy seaside town where locals and visitors alike come to enjoy tasty homemade dishes. Rockaway has been transforming and Last Stop is in the thick of it. The Beach 116th Street business corridor has seen much growth in regards to development. Many new condo-

miniums are being built, new restaurants are opening, and Rockaway’s overall popularity has exploded since super storm Sandy almost nine years ago. Last Stop has stood strong and continues to impress with its dishes. Co-owners Carlos Lazo and Lupe Benitez have owned last stop since 2006. The restaurant has been located next to the A train’s last stop for over 35 years. Carlos and Lupe put their heart and soul into their restaurant and it shows with the cleanliness and freshness of the food they serve. As I eat there from time to time, I feel very comfortable and relaxed, eating or just hanging out with coffee and a laptop. I’ve realized Last Stop seems to be popular with senior citizens and I believe it’s because they also feel safe, comfortable and the prices are extremely reasonable. Recently I asked on Facebook if anyone has any favorites at Last Stop. To my surprise over 80 comments spoke about dishes I never even realized they offered. My favorite has always been the breakfast options at Last Stop. The pancakes are great and cooked to perfection. I usually order the Rockaway pancakes with a side of Irish bangers which are always tasty and have a nice crunch when you bite

into them. When it comes to lunch, you can’t beat their gyro or chicken salad sandwich. I hear people raving about their cream soups but I have yet to try them. Many speak of how they enjoy the cream of broccoli soup, cream of turkey and lobster bisque. On my post, Melissa recommended chicken francaise with mozzarella cheese on a garlic bread hero. This was a huge shock to my taste buds and a great dinner I had last week. Usually for dinner I would order the hot roast beef swiss wrap or the Cajun chicken wrap with a side of fries. Here is a list of some other favorites after speaking to locals: • All Breakfast options • All Gyros • Breakfast Burritos • Chicken Marsala • Spinach Salad with Ranch on the side • Burgers • Greek Salad • Chicken noodle soup • Chicken Quesadillas • Hot open face turkey with mash and extra gravy • Chicken Caesar wrap • All soups (Especially cream of broccoli and the pea soup) • Chicken Francaise • Chili • Nachos supreme with extra chili • Chicken cutlet with mozzarella, roasted peppers and balsamic vinaigrette After speaking to locals, these seem to me some of the all-time favorites, however the menu has many more options as well. Feel free to share some of your favorite Last Stop food photos on my Facebook page. Last Stop is the definition of a local small business, and they continue to support their community, so I hope that locals continue to support them as well. Get over to Last Stop to sit down and enjoy a great meal. Last Stop is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and they deliver from Breezy Point to Broad Channel. They are located at 222 beach 116th Street and can be reached at 718-945-6450. - Scott Ruscillo, your Rockaway Food expert

Raccoon Times: Rockaway’s Nightlife GROOVING WITH GROVE AT CONNOLLY’S By Nicole Taylor-Lang

On a hot summer day in Rockaway, who doesn't like grabbing a delicious frozen drink while listening to live music? On Friday, July 2, local pub Connolly’s (155 Beach 95th Street) was just the spot to do that, with tunes played by Justine Grove. Originally from Jamaica, Queens, Grove loves to come out to Rockaway to perform. “I come to Rockaway all the time. This is my place, the beach and just everything about it,” Grove said. “I love the people here.” The event started around 4pm and was a perfect way to kick off July 4th weekend. I walked down the stairs into Connolly's bar and if you’ve done that on a hot summer afternoon, you know that great feeling when the A/C hits you and you see that frozen machine as you enter. Justine was getting ready to hit the stage and everyone was all ears. She sings while playing her acoustic guitar and covers songs from all different singers and genres, like “Watermelon Sugar” by Harry Styles. She also plays her own originals and even has her own EP. When she plays in Rockaway, Jim Baldwin, who met Groves during an open mic night joins her on his bongo. The two make quite the duo. Grove might look familiar, as she was an American Idol contestant back in 2019 and also recently released a music video for her new single "That Night". Grove was inspired by alternative bands like Paramore and Blink 182 but her music also has some R&B and folk influences. The bar was full for a Friday evening as people were taking in the music. Regulars like Eddie Velez, from Jamaica, was happy to be out and about again, now that things are slowly getting back to normal. “I’m having a fantastic time tonight, the live music and the drinks are great," Velez said while sipping on his piña colada. “It’s nice that things

are opening back up, especially for the Fourth of July weekend.” Connolly’s is known for their frozen piña coladas and frozen pink lemonade drinks which did not disappoint. (I recommend getting a floater or a sinker with it for an extra kick!) I got a piña colada with a Captain Morgan floater, a perfect treat to cool off and start the weekend right. The bartender was keeping busy as people were ordering round after round. As the evening went on, more people came to check out the live music. “I came here just to see Justine,” Rockaway local Melanie Homesy said. “I used to see her play on the boardwalk and when I saw she was playing here, I knew I had to go.” Grove’s vocals carry, filling the whole bar with her soulful voice. Some people even got up to dance, grooving to the music. This wasn’t Grove’s first time playing at Connolly’s as she use to attend and perform at the Open Mic nights pre-Covid. She was happy to be back playing for the crowd. Music is an ongoing passion for her, and she hopes to continue her music journey throughout her life. “I love music, this is all that I do,” Grove said. “Anytime or anywhere there is a show, I’m happy to play.” Connolly’s was grateful to be able to host live music again and have Grove take the stage in the elevated booth. “I’m very happy with the music, Justine is great,” Connolly’s Manager Lisa Franklin said. “Having live music is something we want to continue doing.” This summer could be your last chance. As Connolly’s is still up for sale, the future

of the historic spot could look different under new owners. If you want to check out any of Connolly’s upcoming events, you can follow their Instagram page @connollysbar. To follow Grove’s music and events, check out her Instagram Page @justinegrovemusic. She’ll be back on the boardwalk at Beach 97th for

the Rockaway Summer Fest on Friday, July 16 at 5:45 p.m. You can also find her music on YouTube and platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. 1 sweet onion, sliced Salt and Pepper to Taste

The Rockaway Hotel & Rising Tide Effect Teach Kids to Swim Year after year, Rockaway sees several drownings when lifeguards aren’t on duty. In response, The Rockaway Hotel and Rising Tide Effect have teamed up to try to prevent such drownings by teaching youth from under-served communities swimming lessons and skills, right in The Rockaway Hotel pool. This new Swim Initiative Program, is founded on the principle that swimming is a critical life skill and has the power to save lives while also promoting self-development at a critical age for young adults. For children ages 1–14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle crashes. Children local to the Rockaway peninsula have an elevated drowning risk due to their close proximity to the ocean, which becomes even greater when they swim outside hours with lifeguards on duty. “Last year, at least seven [swimmers] were stolen by its sea. All were young, all were people of color,” wrote Corina Knoll, The New York Times Metro Reporter on June 26, 2020. The Rockaway Hotel and 7G Group have partnered with The Rising Tide Effect, a non-profit that seeks to bring positive change to underserved communities, to support their shared joint goals of uplifting and empowering individuals through swimming. Following the successful pilot program, which launched in October 2020 and served seven students from St. John’s Residence for Boys, The Rockaway Hotel and Rising Tide Effect have expanded the program this summer to

serve a greater number of students from across the Rockaway Peninsula. The initiative targets swimmers ages 9 to 14 years old, providing critical swimming skills as they approach greater independence. The primary desired outcome is to ensure that each student can swim to save their life. Lessons focus on swimming fundamentals like buoyancy and basic swim strokes, while also imparting safety methods for navigating marine environments and conditions and creating expansive opportunities for students to use swimming as a vehicle for personal development. “Since opening, The Rockaway Hotel has served as an anchor for the community—a gathering place for locals and an opportunity to implement meaningful programming. Community engagement is one of our key pillars, with the goal of supporting and elevating local culture” Michi Jigarjian, managing partner and Chief Social Impact Officer said.

“In partnering with Rising Tide Effect, we are excited to build strong bonds with local charities and organizations to support the Swim Initiative, executing our core values of social impact.” “I am thrilled to partner with The Rockaway Hotel this summer and beyond to offer free swim lessons to children from the local community,” Kate Krause, founder of Rising Tide Effect said. “I know what swimming did for me and many others, in all aspects of life, and I am grateful that I am able to provide these children an opportunity to learn this critical life skill and potentially pursue it as a sport or a career.” Lead sponsorship for the Swim Initiative has been provided by 7G Foundation with generous support from Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, JP and Lucy Rorech, and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato Community Budget Initiative program. Offering more than just swim lessons, the program offers swim gear, meals and transportation to all students. New trunks, goggles, and caps were generously provided by Arena, improving performance and helping to foster self confidence in the students. The Rockaway Hotel provides

meals after each lesson, during which swimmers participate in open dialogue with instructors and guest mentors from the aquatics field. These include collegiate and professional athletes, locals who used lifeguarding as the entry point to a career path, as well representatives from organizations who offer local swimming opportunities. Students leave the program with resources that will allow them to obtain lifeguarding and CPR certification, join a local swim team to further develop skills and interact with peers or meet swim requirements for military service and select universities. Student groups will meet in monthly sessions through October 2021. In addition to ‘in-water’ training, each group will complete a dry lesson that comprises a Water Safety Module developed by Swim Strong Foundation, outlining safety precautions and unique aquatic environments relevant to local ocean and bay access. In an effort to provide equitable access to the program for swimmers living across the Rockaway peninsula, The Swim Initiative has partnered with a number of nonprofits, city programs and community groups including Broad Channel Athletic Club, Friends of Seaside Playground, Millennium Development after school program, NYC’s Summer Rising Program, St John's Residence for Boys and Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy for outreach to families to present this opportunity. With demand exceeding capacity, families identified through community partners, who have experienced hardship in the last year are prioritized for participation along with swimmers with the closest proximity to water. The June sessions recently wrapped up. One swimmer, Tamia, ended the session by swimming unassisted for the first time. She’ll soon be going to her first pool party. And the good vibes continue. The July session officially began on July 6. For more information, check out www.RisingTideEffect.org Photos by Le CollectiveM.

BCAC Tackle Football Seeks Recruits By Katie McFadden

Who rocks? Shamrocks! The Broad Channel Athletic Club (BCAC) Shamrocks Tackle Football Season will soon get into full swing. After last year was missed, it’s shaping up to be a promising season, and there’s still time for kids to be a part of this organization that not only teaches skills on the field, but lessons to carry for a lifetime. Coming fresh off their 2021 Flag Football season, which resulted in two championship wins for the fourth and seventh grade St. Camillus/Virgilius CYO teams, BCAC football is getting ready to kick it up a notch with its tackle football season. With more than 125 kids between the ages of five and 14 already registered, practices are set to begin in August to get ready for the season kickoff in September. And there is still time to join. As he speaks of the BCAC’s football program, passion radiates through Brad Palisi, a head coach, who along with Commissioner Mike Malsy, and several volunteers, helps make the program possible. Palisi describes football as a sport where kids can “find a home.” He says, “Football is just different. It’s such a team sport and you can take a kid who might be heavier or not so fast, who doesn’t do well in soccer or basketball, and there’s a home for him or her here. We need that kind of kid. For kids who can’t find their niche in other sports, they can find it in football.” Unlike the flag football program, the tackle football program is not run under CYO. Rather, this team is the only one in the five boroughs to fall under the Nassau Suffolk Football League (NSFL). Due to this, the program is one that brings kids from all neighboring communities and local schools together, rather than kids playing for one school CYO program. “It really unifies the Rockaway community, with Broad Channel and Howard Beach,” Palisi said. And it gives kids the ability to spread their wings. The team plays everyone from Valley Stream to North Babylon to Wantagh,

Freeport and beyond. They typically hold practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with games on Saturday nights and Sundays. Traveling out to Long Island for away games can be a commitment, so this year, the team is trying something a little different to ease that burden for its youngest players who are likely just starting out with the sport. As they have more players to work with this year to form small teams, their Peanuts (ages 5-6) and Pee Wees (ages 7-8) will have the opportunity to play in-house with all games at the BCAC (125 Cross Bay Blvd.) this year. “This means no traveling. Traveling can be a big commitment, so we want to let these young kids decide if they love the sport first. If they’re committed, the parents are more likely to be committed, so we want to give these kids a venue to play in and work their way up to traveling in the older age groups,” Palisi said. The Midgets (ages 9-10), Ponies (ages 11-12) and Seniors (ages 13-14) will play in the small tier division with the Long Island-based teams. BCAC Shamrocks football is all about teaching kids the skills and experience needed to decide if the game is for them. Due to this, they keep registration fees low at $275 per player. With this, each player is given a jersey with their name and lent a helmet and shoulder pads for the season—equipment which can come at a high costs and kids often outgrow. “We want

kids to come with zero knowledge of football and it costs big money to buy a helmet and shoulder pads, and he or she may wind up not liking the sport at all. That’s a big expense for families, so we fundraise all year and we get great support from the BCAC so we’re able to keep costs down,” Palisi said. Tackle football is different from the flag football season as the game gets more physical, but the organizers do all that they can to quell fears and make the game as safe as possible. “There were fears over the game but we’re doing everything to teach this game the right way and the best way to protect the kids,” Palisi said. One of those ways is by doing quality control on the helmets. While not required, the BCAC sends the helmets back to the manufacturer each year to be reinspected and recertified for the following season. They also use two brands of helmets and have fittings before the season to make sure each player has a properly fitting helmet that won’t move when used. Additionally, they are the first area organization to use Shadowman during practices. “It’s this big inflatable, weighted tackling dummy which you can put different vests on and hook up to a sled to run with it. It’s this moving target the kids use instead, in order to limit contact during our practices,” Palisi explained. While learning to play the game safely, kids take away

more than a lesson in defense and offensive plays. “Besides the X’s and O’s about the football field, the first thing we teach kids is that there’s something greater than yourself. Some may have dreams of the NFL but some may not run as fast as others. You can’t always do what someone else can do. I’m taking a bunch of kids and making 85% realize that you’re probably never going to touch the football in this game today. You may not be scoring the touchdowns, but if you didn’t do your job, we wouldn’t be scoring touchdowns. It’s something more important than your personal goals. It’s about confidence, a commitment to an overall goal, selflessness, discipline. There’s no bullying, no hazing. When you’re a Shamrock, we’re all the same and we want to make it a welcoming environment and make each kid feel like they’re a part of something.” At the end of the season, no matter the outcome, the team celebrates their accomplishments. “We have a rewards brunch at Russo’s on the Bay and it’s a great day. Everyone gets dressed up and it’s a great cap to put on the end of the season. Russo’s has been awesome. We’ve been able to keep it free for the players every year,” Palisi said. Registration is still open. For more information, reach out to Brad Palisi at 646-773-6169. To register, head to: www.BCACNY. com/football

Wrestle Talk QUESTIONS By Eric Jayden

This week let's answer questions sent in by readers of this column. Some of you have asked why I haven’t publish your question and unfortunately, I get repeat questions that I have answered on previous columns. But I do answer all your questions via email even if they don't make it on to the weekly column. First question comes from Jamel K. from Far Rockaway and he asked, "What is the highest salary a wrestler can make?" Good question, Jamel, and this all depends on how popular the wrestler is. Salaries range from wrestlers starting out at $50 to $100 per match to intermediate Wrestler making $150 to $250 per match and then wrestlers who get signed to top promotions with national coverage can make $100k and up. But there are wrestlers making $500k to

$1 Million because of their popularity and their ability to draw fans. In the end, the wrestler will make more money if he is in demand and can draw the fans to pay to see him. Second question comes from Gabe F. in Rockaway Park and he asked, "What are your thoughts on Tamina Sunka?" I absolutely love Tamina. She is an incredible performer with many years of experience. I have admired her working as a Heel and to be totally honest, I feel the WWE should have made her World Champion in numerous occasions. Third question of the week comes Danny Boy in Rockaway Beach and he said, "I feel wrestling today just isn't what it used to be. I prefer the days of Hulk Hogan, Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy. That was the time wrestling was great." Well, Danny Boy, I agree with you 100%! Those were my favorite times

in wrestling. But, like anything, wrestling had to evolve and we are currently seeing what it has evolved to. I too wish for the ‘80's and ‘90's of wrestling and thankfully there are wrestlers still out there that work the old school style. But don't give up… everything comes in circles. The fourth and final question of the week comes from Dillon in Arverne and he asked, "What is it with these wrestlers kicking out of finishing moves like 100 times per match? It drives me crazy! I feel it has no meaning." Dillion, this is an awesome question, my dude! Ok, I agree and it’s unfortunate that we have come to a part of wrestling where the finishing move has become useless and yes, I agree, kicking out of another opponent's finisher doesn't make sense. Now, with that said, there are times it's done for suspense purposes to keep the fan on the edge of their seat and there are

Tamina Sunka

times it's done so much it just doesn't make sense and loses all meaning. For me, a finisher is just that, a finisher. It's meant to put your opponent down and finally pin him/her and end the match, period! Thank you all for the great questions and keep sending them in to eavil183@yahoo. com.
