Rockaway’s City Council Districts Could See Shakeup

OUR SERVICES INCLUDE: By Katie McFadden
First we saw a changeup in our congressional and senate district lines. Now City Council is getting a shakeup. On Friday, July 15, the New York City Districting Commission voted on a preliminary plan for new City Council districts. The Preliminary Plan is comprised of newly drawn maps of each of the city’s 51 Council districts, including Rockaway’s Districts 31 and 32, both of which show minor changes. A new plan is drawn every ten years following the U.S. Census. The Commission followed all requirements included in federal, state, and city law. The city’s population grew 8.2 million in 2010 to 8.8 million in 2020, according to the Census. To reflect this increase and bring the city in line with federal, state, and local laws the new plan raises the average number of residents per district from 160,710 to 172,882. The independent Districting Commission voted on the new preliminary plan on Friday after receiving public testimony from nearly 500 city residents at public hearings held from May through
July in each of the five boroughs. Testimony was heard in person and received via Zoom and email. The maps are available for public review online at nyc.gov/districting and a physical copy will be displayed at the Surrogate’s Court 31 Chambers Street. For Rockaway’s Districts, the preliminary maps show minor changes. In District 32, overseen by Councilwoman Joann Ariola, there would mainly be changes to the northern part of the district. The draft map shows parts of the district extending into Forest Park and parts of Ridgewood, plus some sections of South Ozone Park, currently in D32, would become District 28. In Rockaway, some areas in the Beach ‘90s along the bay would become a part of District 31 rather than 32. On the draft, Councilwoman Ariola said, "I represent the constituents of District 32. Whichever way the redistricting goes, from the first draft to the final lines, I will be sure to serve all of my constituents to the best of my abilities. Regardless of whether they are in a newly added Continued on page 4

ROCKAWAY’S CITY Continued from Page 3 portion of the district or in an older one, I want all of my constituents to know that once they are a part of my District, I will be fighting for them with everything I've got." For District 31, the draft maps appear to show some expansion for the area, but parts of Springfield Gardens would be roped into District 27 instead, which Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers opposes. She also believes the current district lines of the Rockaway peninsula should remain untouched. In a statement, NYC Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers said, “The NYC Districting Commissions' preliminary maps will cut out portions of Springfield Gardens, and other existing black enclave in my district and longstanding District 31 institutions, like the Robert Couche Senior Center. Council District 31 residents are a unique mosaic of ethnic communities that share similar values, a major economic driver - the JFK International Airport - and are racially and ethnically cohesive, and should stay
that way. History has shown that redrawing the lines in this way will dilute Council District 31's voting power and misalign the community's collective voice. Additionally, the Rockaway Peninsula should remain as it currently stands and not be adjusted. The current Peninsula representation includes a vibrant Jewish community, several NYCHA developments, Arverne by the Sea, and everything in between. There is no need to disrupt the Peninsula representation. I appreciate all of the work the Commissioners have invested to date and look forward to further engagement around the future of Council District 31.” As noted, these maps released last Friday are preliminary and there is still opportunity for adjustments. The Commission will hold another five hearings in each of the boroughs to get public testimony on these new maps. The hearings are scheduled for Aug. 15, 16, 17, 18, and 22. Testimony also may be provided via Zoom during the public hearings, by email at publictestimony@redistricting.nyc.gov, and by mail at 235 Broadway, NY, NY 10007.

Local Firefighter Injured on the Job By Katie McFadden
Just a week after rescuing victims from the overturned boat in the Hudson River, Firefighter Ryan Warnock, a Rockaway local, found himself in need of rescue. While operating on a two-car crash in Manhattan on Sunday, July 17, Firefighter Warnock’s leg was crushed after one of the vehicles fell on top of him. Warnock, a third-generation firefighter, was among fellow Rescue 1 firefighters at the scene of a car accident at West 42nd Street and 11th Avenue, in which one car was partially resting on top of the other. The firefighters were working to stabilize a BMW SUV on top of a sedan. It is unclear how this initial incident occurred. The top vehicle was at a 45-degree angle when the panicked driver accidentally hit the gas, causing the car to move forward and fall on top of Warnock who was on the right side of the vehicle. Fellow firefighters and bystanders rushed to lift it and remove Warnock. Warnock was transported
to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for a broken femur. No other passengers were injured in the incident. In a statement from the FDNY, Acting FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said, “As a result of the accident, a Volvo and a BMW were on top of each other. As members from Rescue 1 tried to brace and stabilize the car on top and remove the occupants inside, the driver of one of the vehicles hit the gas and caused a car
to fall and pin firefighter Ryan Warnock below. Firefighter Warnock was unpinned and taken to Bellevue where he is in serious but stable condition, being treated for injuries to his leg. Every day, members of our great Department put their lives on the line to protect the residents of our great city. We are grateful for the quick response of our members, whose fast reactions helped remove firefighter Warnock quickly and ensured he got the medical attention he needed.” The Rockaway Times reached out to Firefighter Warnock following the incident, but he did not want to comment. After sharing the news of his incident on Facebook, everyone from locals to people around the country showed an outpouring of support to wish Warnock a full recovery. One of Warnock’s cousins responded that he was doing okay. Warnock’s rescue came just five days after he was hailed a hero in an incident that made headlines across the city. On Tuesday, July 12, a family of 13 had chartered a boat
on the Hudson River. The 24-foot boat, made for 12 people, capsized after being hit by a ferry wake and the family shifted to one side, causing the boat to turn over. Nearby ferries and the FDNY and NYPD harbor units responded. Firefighter Warnock of Rescue 1 was one of the rescue divers on scene. “I was able to get in and make a surface swim over to the vessel which was upside down. I was able to deflate myself and get under the boat. I encountered an NYPD Diver under the boat. I moved forward and found an air pocket. I located a small individual and was able to remove that individual, and our Rescue Paramedics began medical interventions.” Warnock said at a press conference following the rescue. Tragically two people, including 7-year-old Julian Vasquez and Lindelia Vasquez, 47, died in the boating incident. The Rockaway Times is wishing Firefighter Ryan Warnock a full and speedy recovery from his recent injuries.

Ferry Fare Going Up to $4
By Katie McFadden
Get ready for higher ferry fares. After an audit by Comptroller Brad Lander found that the Economic Development Corporation underreported $224 million in expenditures for the NYC Ferry, Mayor Eric Adams announced that the citywide ferry system will see a fee increase. Additionally, a Rockaway express ferry will be added to help alleviate some of the summer overflow. At a press conference on Thursday, July 14, Adams announced that a one-way ride on the ferry will go up to $4, up from the current $2.75 starting September 12. This will allow the system to continue to best serve riders, while generating
as much as $2 million in additional annual revenue, helping to reduce the system’s public subsidy. However, some discounts will be available. For instance, frequent riders can buy a 10-ride pack for $27.50, essentially maintaining the $2.75 fee. A Fair Fares program will also give reduced rides to seniors, people with disabilities and low-income riders, at $1.35 a ride. “More and more New Yorkers are now using the NYC Ferry to get to work and get around, so we are writing a new chapter in the history of the NYC Ferry system and of transportation in our city — one built on the three pillars of equity, accessibility, and fiscal sustainability,” Mayor Adams said. “Our NYC Ferry Forward vision will keep our city on the map as a leader and innovator in public transportation.” Those eligible for the $1.35 fare will be able to apply for the Ferry Discount Program using the NYC Ferry website or by mailing in an application. Once verified, eligi-
ble riders can buy discounted tickets through the NYC Ferry app or at NYC Ferry ticket windows and agents. The NYC Ferry app will also support digital wallet apps like Cash App to expand access for more New Yorkers. The city’s almost 60 New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments within a mile of the ferry landings will receive mailers with more information about the discount. “Outreach and engagement around the discounted NYC Ferry rates in NYCHA facilities, like Hammels Houses in my district, ensure more New Yorkers will have access to affordable, fast, and reliable modes of transportation,” NYC Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, chair, Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure said. "Offering $1.35 discounted rates for underserved and disabled New Yorkers and $27.50 monthly rates will increase ridership."
Adams also announced that the $1 fee for bicycles will be eliminated to help encourage environmentally sustainable multi-modal transportation, starting September 12. In some good news for summer ferry riders, Adams announced that starting June 23, NYC Ferry will launch the Rockaway Rocket. The new, reservation-based shuttle pilot program with direct service from Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan to Rockaway will run on summer weekends and holidays until September 11, supplementing the current NYC Ferry service on the Rockaway route. The Rocket will have an $8 fare. Additionally, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), which oversees NYC Ferry, will initiate a competitive, open bidding process for a new ferry operation contract this summer. This new contract will further allow the system to remain a permanent fixture of the New York City landscape.

Rockaway’s Own Shark Week By Katie McFadden
Discovery Channel is really stepping up their promotion for Shark Week this year. Or maybe it’s jawst a coincidence. Sharks were on the mind of locals and visitors alike this week as beaches were closed due to sightings, and some were even caught on camera. A local family picked this heatwave-packed week to teach their son, Timmy how to surf. He also may have gotten a lesson on how to swim extra fast. As the father, Chris, was giving lessons on Beach 121st on Tuesday, July 19, just before 1 p.m., he noticed a big animal launch itself out of the water maybe 30 yards to their right. ”I was teaching him how to surf and as I was pushing him out, I saw it jump up and make a huge splash. I grabbed him and got out of the water as quick as possible,” Chris said. “The lifeguards ran over and said, ‘Is that what I think it was?’ I said, “100%” While it’s become common to see whales and dolphins break the surface in local waters over recent years, this was no dolphin. Chris knew he had seen a six-foot shark take the leap. While the shark breaking fin air was cause for mild alarm, Chris says it won’t keep his family out of the water. As Chris’ son Timmy told him, ‘We’re in the shark’s habitat.’ While it was clear that what they saw was a shark, as just minutes later, Chris says a pod of about 100 dolphins passed by for comparison, what they didn’t know at the time was that they had the proof to back it up. While going through footage the next day, Chris saw that his wife, Tricia, had gotten it all on camera. While Tricia was filming her husband and son on the waves, on the righthand side of the screen, she had captured the sporty shark showing off. “At the start of Shark Week, this is just awesome,” Chris said. The family shared the video with The Rockaway Times and it blew up on social media, reaching more than 60,000 people on Facebook and another 70,000 on Twitter on Wednesday.
It is not clear what kind of shark was caught on video, but amateur marine biologists on social media had a fun time guessing. Chris believes it may have been a bull shark. Several guessed a spinner shark, due to the way the shark in the video leaped and spun in the air, a behavior typical for this species which many said typically doesn’t harm humans. Others guessed mako. And some even suggested it was a young great white. Whatever it was, it was enough to shut down the beach on Tuesday. Shark sightings like Chris’ and as many as two others on Beach 67th and Beach 102nd, caused NYC Parks and the NYPD to call everyone out of the water and shut the beach down for the rest of the 90-degree day. While it’s not surprising for sharks to be found in the ocean, officials have been on high alert in the wake of several recent shark attacks off of neighboring beaches. Within the last two weeks, there have been five alleged shark attacks off of Long Island. The latest occurred on Wednesday, July 14 when a 49-year-old Arizona man was standing in waistdeep water when he was bitten on his wrist and buttocks just after 6 p.m. on Fire Island’s Seaview Beach. That attack came just 12 hours after a 41-year-old man was bitten in the calf while surfing off of Smith Point County Park in Shirley. It was where 10 days earlier, a 33-year-old lifeguard was bitten, just a few days after a man said his foot was bitten at Jones Beach on June 30. Another lifeguard was also bitten on the foot
while training at Ocean Beach on Fire Island on July 7. In response to the alarming increase in attacks, Governor Kathy Hochul ordered state agencies to step up monitoring of shark activity in local waters by use of drone, helicopter and boats, particularly along Long Island’s beaches. "As New Yorkers and visitors alike head to our beautiful Long Island beaches to enjoy the summer, our top priority is their safety," Governor Hochul said. "We are taking action to expand patrols for sharks and protect beachgoers from potentially dangerous situations. I encourage all New Yorkers to listen to local authorities and take precautions to help ensure safe and responsible beach trips this summer." Under city jurisdiction, after the beaches were closed on Tuesday, Rockaway’s waters were being monitored by NYPD helicopters for the rest of the afternoon until they announced the coast was clear at 6 p.m., just in time for lifeguards to leave for the day. But by Wednesday, July 20, the beach was back in action, ready for crowds on another scorching 90-degree day. While Tuesday’s shark sightings sparked some excitement on the beach and on social media, Chris said there are much bigger worries out there. “The most dangerous thing we saw out there was the plastic in the water,” he said. “Please keep our beaches clean.”
Some experts suggest the recent increase in shark activity is because local waters have been cleaner in recent years. This has led to an increase in baitfish like bunker, a favorite of sharks and other marine wildlife like whales and dolphins, in local waters. The increase in alleged shark attacks may be due to the higher temperatures. Higher temperatures bring bigger crowds, making the chance of a shark attack higher. Baitfish, like bunker, have also been moving closer to shore. It is believed the sharks involved in the incidents in Long Island are sand tiger sharks, as there is a nursery in the area. It is suspect-
ed that the sharks are mistaking people’s feet for fish as they hunt, as sharks tend not to target people. The odds of getting bit by a shark are a little less than one in four million, according to the International Shark Attack File. To reduce the risk of shark attacks, avoid areas where schools of baitfish can be seen, areas where people are fishing, and swimming at dusk, dawn or nighttime. Always swim where lifeguards are present and always follow lifeguard instruction (especially when you see them make a shark fin signal over their heads and blow that whistle). To learn more about sharks, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week begins Sunday, July 24. Photos from Tricia G’s video.

Councilwoman Organizes Biker Sting Operation By Katie McFadden
The city is done with the biker and ATV antics. Following last week’s report about a Rockaway man being assaulted in his car, allegedly by a group of the bikers on July 10, Councilwoman Joann Ariola put her foot down. The councilwoman worked with several city agencies to come up with a plan to stop the rowdy motorcade that was starting to become a weekly routine. Anticipating the motorcade of hundreds of dirt bikers and ATV riders to come through Rockaway on Sunday, July 17, as they’ve done for the past two Sundays, a multiple-agency effort was set up ahead of both bridges to try to trap and confiscate them. Ariola organized a joint campaign with the 100th, 102nd, and 106th Precincts, as well as the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Sanitation, National Parks Service, Queens District Attorney,
the Police Commissioner's office, and Patrol Borough Queens South to bring a stop to the dangerous motorcades once and for all. “We’ve seen large groups of people on dirt bikes, ATVs and motorcycles pouring through our neighborhoods for weeks, and today’s police action sent a clear message that this will not be tolerated,” the Councilwoman said. “Having groups of bikers num-
bering in the hundreds, disobeying the law, and in some cases even assaulting and injuring our residents is yet another symptom of the lawlessness that has taken over this city. That ends today.” Sunday’s mobilization was the largest action ever undertaken by the NYPD in response to these marauding groups. One large group of NYPD officers, as well as DSNY trucks, set up camp near the Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge late afternoon and into the evening, while others say U.S. Park Police and State Troopers were spotted on the Brooklyn side near Aviator, ahead of the Marine Parkway Bridge, where the bikers have entered previously. Some were caught on the Queens side on Sunday evening. It is not clear how many vehicles were trapped on Sunday. At the very least, the set up seemed to serve as a deterrent for the bikers who were spotted on Woodhaven Boulevard earlier in the day. The
Rockaway Times reached out to the DCPI, the NYPD’s press office for exact numbers from Sunday, but we were given a more general response. “The NYPD is aggressively pursuing every method to rid our streets of illegal dirt bikes and ATV’s. The end result must ensure the safety of our citizens while ridding our streets of this menace,” a spokesperson said. To date, the NYPD said they have seized 1,921 of these illegal bikes and ATVs, an increase from 1,022 in 2021. In a social media post relating to the sting, the 100th Precinct shared a photo of five dirt bikes. It is unclear if these bikes were confiscated on Sunday. According to Ariola, “the operation is expected to continue until the bikers are apprehended and the danger they present to the people of New York is finally ended.” Photo from Counciwoman Ariola’s office.

Country Swag to Bring Next Big Artist to Rockaway By Katie McFadden
Those in flip flops like country music too. If anything, Country Swag has proven that. After launching nearly seven years ago as New York Country Swag, Broad Channel resident Stephanie Wagner’s country music merch, media and support network has grown a following of more than 40,000 fans, and nothing is slowing them down. In fact, Country Swag is bringing its next show to The Rockaway Hotel on Thursday, July 28, featuring up-and-coming country star Adam Doleac. Around 2012, Wagner discovered country music, despite New York not even having a country radio station at the time. ”I realized it was actually really fun music and I was having a good time at these concerts,” she said. Shortly after, in 2013, 94.7 Nash FM hit the local radio airwaves, bringing more local attention to country music, but it was still slow to start. So Wagner decided to take on a project and help bring more awareness to the joy of country. In December 2015, Wagner launched New York Country Swag and it quickly became New York’s goto source for all things country, especially when Wagner started bringing country music singers to New York’s small stages. For instance, back in 2016, Wagner brought Russell Dickerson to play Bungalow Bar. The event was packed for a musician who hadn’t yet made a big name for himself, but Russell Dickerson is now a name country fans can’t escape, especially when it comes to the top of the country charts. Since launching the brand, Wagner has had a knack for recognizing the next big thing in country music. That’s why Country Swag has become a trusted source nationwide for country news, events and fun merch. After developing such a big following, in May 2021, Wagner transformed New York Country Swag into simply—Country Swag. “We were capturing fans all over and we didn’t want to limit ourselves because we have all these people following us for new artists, no matter where they’re living. We wanted to reach a broader spectrum, but we still have that big New York follow-

SUNSET COVE CONTINUES TO GROW
The next phase of Sunset Cove in Broad Channel is underway. On Wednesday, June 13, NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue joined Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery Assistant Communication Director Shachar Roloson, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, Broad Channel Civic Association & Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers Representative Daniel Mundy Sr., and members of the community to break ground on phase two of the Sunset Cove Park project which will bring a new boardwalk and outdoor classroom to the park. Closed for more than a decade, Sunset Cove Park was restored and reopened in 2019 with a salt marsh and maritime upland. This picturesque Broad Channel park helps to provide important storm protection and restore the waterways of Jamaica Bay. At the event, Urban Park Rangers hosted an educational tour of the recently renovated wetlands. Phase two of the Sunset Cove Park project will construct an 8’ wide boardwalk adjacent to the newly restored wetland at Sunset Cove Park. The boardwalk will be partially constructed using reclaimed wood from the Rockaway Boardwalk destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012
and will lead to a covered outdoor classroom that has interpretive elements, including inset seasonal sun position information and binoculars. Two new bioswales will also be built at the park entrance to collect stormwater. “Thanks to its unique location, Sunset Cove is well positioned to tell the story of how Jamaica Bay’s wetlands perform critical functions that safeguard our environment,” Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. said. “The kids who will walk this boardwalk and use this classroom will be able to learn about their surroundings in a way they couldn’t before, giving them a more thorough understanding of the environment and the threats posed to it. Hopefully the lessons learned here will prompt our next generation of leaders to be more supportive of what needs to be done to protect our environment and our communities.” Phase one of the project, previously completed in June 2019, restored 4.5 acres of salt marsh and 7 acres of maritime upland in the park to improve habitat, enhance public waterfront access and reduce wave and wind impacts during storms. The $4.2 million phase two project was funded through a New York Rising grant, with additional support from the Office of the Queens Borough President, State Senator Joseph Addabbo, Jr., and then-Assemblymember Phil Goldfeder with continued support from Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato. SketchRockaway! Celebrates First Anniversary By Dan Guarino
SketchRockaway!, which hosts outings for all levels of artists to get together and promotes public art in Rockaway, is celebrating its first birthday. Founders Norma Allende and Chris Jorge explain, “sketchRockaway! is a free art group open to all urban sketchers.” Every two weeks the group invites art enthusiasts to come out, sketch and brush, meet old friends and make new ones. Outdoor locations have varied from Beach 17th Street to Fort Tilden to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Marking their first anniversary, they gathered at the Beach 97th Street concessions on Saturday, July 16, for refreshments, sun and sketching. Attending was a young woman from midtown Manhattan, now a Rockaway summer resident, who was the first to arrive at sketchRockaway’s inaugural session one year ago. And there were some newcomers. A few children with their mom also stopped by to make some art. “The number of attendees varies from session to session,” Chris
Jorge noted, “and has ranged from a few to 12 participants. We have had sketchers of all ages from six years-old and up and of various levels of artistic skills. “People bring their own supplies of paper, sketchpad, pencils, pens, watercolor or any media they want to explore. We advise people to bring a lightweight stool or chair to sit on,” Jorge said. “What is wonderful about sketching is the unique perspective each individual brings to their work.” After taking some time off during the chilled winter months, the group resumed this past spring. “We thought of holding some indoor sessions,” Jorge said, “however, due to the continued unpredictability of Covid rates, we have not held any indoor sessions as of yet.” Allende, Jorge and other members are also involved in spreading art in Rockaway. Everyday hundreds pass the now defunct Fashion Wave storefront at 218 Beach 116th Street, where vacant windows have been transformed into lively, colorful public murals. Speaking on how it all started, Jorge said, “Norma and I have been friends for many years. Last year I saw a sketch Norma had posted on her Facebook page of businesses along Rockaway Beach Boulevard. I called and we began to organize this group. “After a very difficult year of quarantine and seclusion due to the pandemic our intent was to encourage people to get out, socialize, and get involved with a creative activity,” she said. Both have been involved in Rockway’s arts for many years. Both served on the board of the

Rockaway Artists Alliance, where Jorge was vice president and Education Director for 10 years, helping found its afterschool arts education program and summer camp. Allende, an NYC art teacher for 19 years, served on the Rockaway Museum board and as its Arts Activity Coordinator. “Since the beginning, people have been happy to have a new venue for artists and art lovers to gather. Our (mural) windows on Beach 116th have generated inquiries and positive feedback,” Jorge said. Future plans include new projects like establishing sketch sessions for kids and teens. “We have many ideas but need to find the appropriate space to accommodate the group,” she added. “People should know not to be
shy or intimidated by a lack of art experience or skills. Even though this is not an instructional class, we are supportive and encouraging of one another's work,” Jorge said. “For newcomers, we are happy to guide them through basic techniques of drawing.” A year after successfully building the group, Jorge and Allende’s message to those who want to come and enjoy is, as Jorge puts it, “The beauty of sketchRockaway! is that it is local, it is free, and requires no time commitment. Anyone is welcome to stop by and get inspired to give it a try!” For more information check sketchRockaway! on Facebook or Instagram, or email sketchrockaway@gmail.com. Public Safety on Top for Tom Dear Editor:
On Nocebo Dear Editor: Good article on the Nocebo Effect (Ask the Doc), where patients can create their dire symptoms psychologically through fear of known side effects. Public Safety is at the forefront of Tom Sullivans’ 2022 Campaign. With the passage of “No-Cash Bail” tucked away in a budget vote in the State government, citizens of our city and state barely had a say in its passage, how’s that for transparency? I would strongly argue that the passage of bail elimination for certain crimes has proven dangerous for the people of Queens and our City as a whole. Tom Sullivan is running for New York State's 23rd Assembly District, which represents the Rockaways, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Howard Beach, Lindenwood and Ozone Park. Tom Sullivan is advocating for his Constituents’ safety and an advocate for the NYPD with his policy, action and words. I know that his passion for the safety and well-being of everyone in our district is paramount. This comes from his experience as a parent,
small business owner, and an officer in the United States Army, where “Good Order and Discipline” are essential. Repealing the “No-Cash Bail” law in its entirety is priority #1 for Tom. Electing a fighter and an advocate like Tom Sullivan will be the first step towards reversing these disastrous policies that make our city less safe. The son of a NYPD Detective (Ret.), brother of Federal, State and City law enforcement officers, coupled with Tom’s military experience leaves no question where he stands on “Law and Order.” His experience as a financial professional and a small business owner will be exactly what we need in Albany to correct the out-of-control spending and misappropriation of funds. Tom believes that we have a duty and responsibility to be good stewards of the taxpayers’ funds. The role of the government is to protect the people, educational opportunities, public health and sanitation, and infrastructure and transportation.
This November 8th, elect a proven leader, established financial professional and small business owner to represent you in Albany. Tom has a saying, “Before you go out and represent the people in your community, you should have walked a mile in their shoes.” Tom is a political outsider with vast experience who has proven his ability to work with all people for the good of his employer, his community and the nation. OP-ED: MAKE THE HUDSON CANYON A SANCTUARY Living in a city of 8 million people, we often forget how many marine neighbors we have. Luckily for those of us who live in Rockaway or visit often, we have been reminded of just how lively our oceans are with an increase of wildlife sightings just off our shores: seals, turtles, horseshoe crabs, whales, and countless dolphins. Living in an oceanfront community, the health of our marine ecosystems is directly tied to our own health and to the livelihood of many of our neighbors. These wildlife sightings are positive indicators of the health of our oceans. As leaders of Rockaway Women for Progress and Surfrider Foundation NYC, we hope you will join us in working to maintain its health by supporting the nomination of Hudson Canyon as a national marine sanctuary. Hudson Canyon is an underwater canyon off the coast of New York and New Jersey that rivals the size of the Grand Canyon. It is a breeding ground and home
for hundreds of species including whales, turtles, squid, fish, and deep sea corals. On June 8, the White House and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) announced their intent to designate Hudson Canyon as a marine sanctuary under NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary Program. We believe sanctuary status would be beneficial both to our ocean’s health and to the well-being of our region as a whole. It would ensure a future for fishing and tourism in and around the Canyons, industries that employ many of our neighbors. It would protect us and
our beaches from polluting industry by banning oil, gas, and mineral extraction. It would also provide funding for research, education, and opportunities for us to engage with this natural wonder. In the sanctuary designation process, NOAA welcomes public input which we believe to be a huge opportunity for stakeholders and neighbors to be involved, an opportunity that we would not necessarily have if the region is privately developed (such as a pipeline). One of the essential recommendations we are making is to keep “the Canyons” open to recreational and commercial fisheries. We ask that the fisheries continue to be managed by the existing authorities and we believe that sanctuary status will ensure an abundance of healthy catch for years to come. In the words of our partners at the Wildlife Conservation Society, “this is a once in a generation opportunity to support marine
conservation and deepen the connection of the more than 28 million residents of New York and New Jersey to our treasured ocean resources.” NOAA’s designation process begins with a 60-day comment period in which they’re collecting comments from the public, written and verbal, regarding the future of this region. We would love for you, our neighbors, to join us in the fight to protect our ocean by submitting a letter to NOAA in support of Hudson Canyon or speaking at a virtual or in-person hearing. An in-person session was held on July 19, but there is an upcoming virtual webinar on August 3 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, see: https://nyc.surfrider.org/ Thank you for joining us in this fight to protect our ocean. They’re Not Only Words By Kathy Nicolosi
Thank you, I’’m sorry, Go to hell, Please, That’s wonderful, That’s awful, That will never work, Good job…. The power of words, each one creating a vibration of its own and yet how much do we think about what we say and the effect it might have on another, the atmosphere around us, or inside us? “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.” - Mark Twain Have you ever noticed if you’ve had an angry conversation with someone, or some kind of verbal conflict, there is this “vibe” left in the air even once the conversation is over? You might say, the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Have you ever wondered what that is and where that comes from? I’m not saying I have the answer to that question, this is just food for thought, bringing to light that maybe we should pay more attention to what we say and how we say it. We speak and molecules form, energy is created, molecules of joy and love or anger and despair the choice is ours. I think that is what we feel in the air after a conversation. It’s an actual combining of energies which form vibrational molecules which linger in the air. Crazy idea? Maybe, but maybe it’s worth some thought. Go to a comedy club and the air is filled with laughter and fun it’s contagious and feels good. Or
have you ever gone into a place a house, a club, a restaurant and said “there’s something about the vibe here” where does that come from? Molecules lingering in the air perhaps? As I said, I’m not a scientist who has the answers to this but I’m a thinker who is willing to look at things differently and if you’re still reading this then obviously you are willing to do the same or you at least have a curious mind and a good imagination. You know what Einstein said about that : “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Words can inspire, destroy, enlighten, heal, calm, disturb, irritate and more. Think of words as little containers that contain energy and every time you say something you are opening that little container and emptying it out into the atmosphere and most times, we are directing that little container of energy at someone. In writing this article, I am opening little containers of energy with the words I’m using and in reading this you are absorbing that energy on some level. So, if you work on it, you can harness the power of your words and have those little containers be filled with things like - hope, peace, love, joy, enthusiasm or just the opposite, the choice is yours to make. Once you realize that you absorb the energy behind the words you say, hear or read, you can then watch what you say, stay away from negative and destructive talk coming from others and be sure to read inspiring, and uplifting words.

We are so used to having kneejerk verbal reactions to things every day that for the most part people don’t realize the power they have and the vibrations that they are putting out into the world when they speak. It just becomes “OK” to react and say things like “oh, that’s too bad” or “how awful” or “the world is just a mess.” Each of those responses has its own flavor, its own rate of vibration and will leave both the speaker and the listener with a bit of the residue from such statements. Why talk like that? How does it help anyone? What good does it do? If everyone thought about it and started putting out only good positive thoughts and words into the world, who knows what shift might happen? There is a phenomena called collective consciousness that is actually being studied and researched. When there is a large number of people believing the same thing or thinking the same thought/s there is a power behind that mass consciousness that can actually change things, repair cells, stop violence etc…. So it might be time to decide which side of the consciousness meter you want to be on. “If our collective consciousness reaches a place of peace, harmony, laughter and love. It will be a different world.” - DC Here’s what’s great about becoming aware of this, you can turn it all around and choose your words more wisely and with more conscious thought. It will take vigilance and effort but
The Rockaway Times it’s a worthy task and will make a big difference in your life and the lives of those around you if you decide to take your power back over the words you speak and how you speak them. Here’s an example of how a different approach to what you say might have a different effect. Let’s say you are meeting a friend and you get stuck in traffic, so you wind up getting to the meeting place 30 minutes late. Now, you can immediately say “I’m so sorry, I was stuck in this horrible traffic, and no one would let me in the lane, people are so selfish, and I’m never late but I’m telling you the traffic was just beyond awful.” OR you might say, “thank you so much for waiting for me, I am really so happy to be here with you and couldn’t wait to see you. I just really couldn’t wait to get here.” See the difference? Feel the difference? One is a reliving of the unpleasant traffic and being late and the other approach is filled with gratitude for the positive side of it all. Words are actually “things” they have energy and are imbued with a vibration which is determined by who is saying it and the feeling and intent behind it. I leave you with this: Before you speak THINK T - Is it True H - Is it Helpful I - Is it Inspiring N - Is it Necessary K - Is it Kind.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
A Cancer Cure I’m going to guess you missed it. Or, if you didn’t, you didn’t think much about it. I’m talking about a media report released in mid-June of this year that covered a research study done at Memorial Sloane Kettering (MSK). As usual, the media release occurred before the study’s publication, which occurred on June 23, 2022 (in the New England Journal of Medicine). The study involved a new treatment stratagem for patients with advanced colorectal cancers. In this small study involving a new treatment modality, all 12 patients were cured. Yes, I said cured. Not in remission. The cancers were not suppressed but gone, unde-
tectable, vanished, AMF. This should have been front page news, but it wasn’t. Let’s look at why it wasn’t. The traditional, and long-standing, non-surgical approach to cancer treatment is based on the fact that cancer cells divide faster than the rest of the cells in the body, except for cells in the gastrointestinal and neurological systems, which also replicate rapidly. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments target these rapidly dividing cells by interfering in their DNA replication process, which passes DNA down to subsequent generations of cells. If the cells cannot pass uncorrupted DNA down to
their successors, those successors cannot be created. Unfortunately, because the cells in the GI and neurological systems turn over rapidly, it is in those areas where side effects occur. Side effects may include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and hair loss. Surgical treatments of colorectal tumors and other tumors that are located deep in the abdomen/pelvis can result in colostomies and bowel, urinary, or sexual dysfunction. Up to now, the goal of cancer treatment has been to increase survival time and thus allow the patient to stay alive longer. Remissions, while often rare, do occur. Complete cures are rarer still. In general, oncology has made great strides. Remission rates, like survival time, have been improving. Cancer treatment is big business, however. The cost of new treatments and chemotherapy agents is astronomical and pharmaceutical firms are making huge profits. There has been a shift away from traditional chemo agents toward biological agents and antibody treatments that enhance the body’s own immune system to fight the cancer. Great strides are being made. But just
The Rockaway Times imagine what would happen if all of a sudden a new agent appeared that was so successful that it made all previous (highly profitable) therapies obsolete overnight. Please understand – I am not saying that is what happened in this study, but it is a possibility. Researchers at MSK took 12 patients with the same advanced rectal cancer and gave them a new biological agent, an antibody designed to attack the cancer and enhance the body’s own immune system response to the tumor. The study plan included giving the patients standard chemotherapy and surgery after six months of treatment with the antibody (one treatment every three weeks). After six months, the study team evaluated the 12 patients in preparation of starting standard chemo. But the study was stopped because all 12 cancers were completely gone – plans for chemo and surgery were scrapped. And all 12 patients tolerated the treatments with minimal side effects. It just might be that we have entered a new age of cancer treatment. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Deadline for Scam Refunds Extended Are you a victim of a scam, such as a grandparent or romance scam, where the fraudster tricked you into making a payment via a Western Union wire transfer? If the fraud took place between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your losses pursuant to an agreement between Western Union and the government. A recently extended deadline allows victims who have
not previously submitted a petition for remission to do so by August 31, 2022. Back in 2017, following a joint investigation conducted by the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Western Union admitted to aiding and abetting wire fraud and agreed to forfeit almost $586 million. “Scammers used Western Union’s money transfer system
because they knew [Western Union] turned a blind eye [to them],” said a spokesperson for the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Affairs. The DOJ is using these funds to provide refunds to individuals who were scammed into using Western Union to pay scammers. While over $366 million has already been disbursed to approximately 150,ooo victims, additional funds are still available, which is why the DOJ has extended the filing deadline. According to a DOJ press release, consumers targeted by relevant scams included many senior citizens. Frauds directed towards seniors included the “grandparent scam,” where the fraudster poses as a victim’s relative (or someone in a position to help the relative) in order to avoid harm; romance scams, where the fraudster poses as an online love interest and requests funds for a visit or another purpose; and lottery or sweepstakes scams, where the fraudster tells the victim that they’ve won a cash prize but must first pay fees, like taxes, to receive the prize.
Other scams for which victims might be eligible for refunds include scams where victims did not receive items they bought online using Western Union and advance-fee loan scams where victims paid fees upfront via Western Union but did not end up getting the promised loans. Fraud victims who sent a money transfer through Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017 may file a petition for remission online or may obtain a petition at the remission website, www.WesternUnionRemissionPhase2.com. Petitions must be postmarked or submitted online on or before August 31, 2022. Information regarding the remission process, including eligibility and frequently asked questions, is available at the remission website or by calling 1-855-7861058. The Food and Beverage Insider THE ORANGE WINE GUIDE By Natalie Crooks
In the last five years, you may have noticed a new wave of funky, natural wines popping up on the market. When the natural wine movement began in the United States about five years ago, orange wines came with it. Despite its name, orange wine is not made from oranges, but is named for its deep amber hue. Orange wine is known by some as the cold weather rosé, but these wines can (and should) be enjoyed year-round. They range in body and color from light to bold and are known for their funky aroma, although there are many examples of elegant and smooth orange wines. Orange wine is made from the same white wine grapes you are probably already familiar with. When you have a green and purple grape you can clearly see the difference in color from the skin,
but what about the juice? No matter the grape, the juice comes out pretty much clear. Red wine gets its hue from the skin of the purple grapes, rosé also gets its hue from the skin, but sees less time in contact for a lighter color, and white wines see no skin contact.
Serving the Rockaways Since 1982 To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com
Orange wine is made by exposing white wine to the grape skins, this creates the orange hue and adds body and tannin to the wine. This technique has been around for thousands of years and originated in the country of Georgia. Orange wine is commonly known for notes of bruised fruit, nuts, cider and apricot. Orange wine is a great option for cider and beer lovers, the oxidation creates a tart flavor similar to that of a fruited sour beer. You can also find sparkling orange wines on the market, Glinavos, Palaiokerisio, from Greece, is a natural, orange sparkling wine with funky, savory-sweet notes and is perfect for sipping on the beach. Orange wines can vary in flavor profile and body, and therefore pair well with a lot of different foods. The tarter, sparkling styles can pair well with fried food like calamari, and the bolder wines stand up
well to spicy foods. Funky cheeses are also perfect to enjoy with a funky bottle of wine. Funky, tart wine may not be for everyone, but it is certainly worth trying, especially for wine enthusiasts, as it is one of the oldest wine-making methods in the world. You can certainly impress your friends at your next get together by bringing something they’ve probably never tried before, and possibly haven’t even heard of! Many orange wines are coming out of Italy these days, but countries all over the world are beginning to explore this skin-contact method. If you’re hesitant to try out an orange wine, pick a wine grape you already know you like, an orange wine made from pinot grigio will still taste similar to a white pinot grigio. Keep an open mind when it comes to orange wine, your palate just might surprise you.

Caring Cara Dear Enchantress, Oh my. Here I am in a longterm relationship with my cleaning lady, and she has to go. I feel trapped and I can't fire her. She's been with us forever and she never does a good job. I tend to ignore it, but lately she's been extra not trying. Obvious dust, and anything on the floor that needs some extra muscle, she can't do it. She is a bit "getting older," so I feel extra sensitive about her working and keeping income. How can I do this gracefully? Worst case scenario is I keep her because I feel bad, and

hire someone else as well? HELP? Dear Caring Cara, You care. That is beautiful, I invite you whenever you think of your cleaning lady to actually smile. It's special to have someone in your home for a long time, it's intimate. I want you to know it is HARD to let someone go that you are close to. There are several ways to do it gracefully, and if you are concerned about money, let's include that. Of course I'm here for some beautiful communication, so she knows how much you care, and
that this isn't easy for you. Make an appointment time and day with her, on the same day she usually comes, let her know by phone or text that you would like to reserve about 15 minutes when she arrives for her next visit. This is so she is not blind sighted. It's also natural to feel nervous about this. Think about how you would like to gift her money, is it a bonus? Would you like to call it a gratitude gift? Something that describes how much she has helped you. Question: Is there something you DO want to keep her for? Is she good with your dog? Do you want her to water your garden? This would be a softer exit strategy, to give her one specific task to come to your home for, another softer option is to have her come less frequently, to phase her out. If you want her to be done and complete, it will be hard, your gift will be helpful. If you want her done and complete, let her know in a sandwich style. First a gratitude, (something
specific), next the news: we are shifting gears, or "even though we are so grateful for you, we are having to end our house cleaning relationship, third part (of the sandwich) - This is so hard for us, we love you and know that you know that, we would like to give you this bonus for being with us so long. Keep in mind, this may be something she wants as well! She may also be having a hard time quitting! Cheers to your success! Enchantress Shane If you have a question for Shane, or want to hire her as your life coach and guide: email her at love@enchantedembodiment.com

Life With Our
“Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Help RBAF ‘Mind The Gap’ for the Autism Community For the past month, I’ve been in a bunker. Unexpectedly immersed in a twilight zone in which I have physically been barred from sweating it out with the rest of you in the heat wave that’s been scorching the northeast and even across the pond in the U.K. Forty degree Celsius in London? Absolutely unheard of! Anyway, interestingly enough, in this bunker, autism advocacy followed me, and after a few random exchanges with other caregivers parenting an autistic child, I found myself inspired. After five years writing this column and founding Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF), I discovered a gaping need in the autism community—GUIDANCE! Whether you’re a caregiver of a newly diagnosed two-year-old or an adult with autism, we all have a never-ending barrage of questions, especially when it comes to the future. However folks, I’m a firm believer that God has His hand in every twist and turn of our lives, and this bunker awarded me not just the time to pause and reflect, but to plan an entirely new blueprint to truly make RBAF a crucial GUIDE for the autism community. In London, when taking the Underground, you see signs everywhere stating, “Mind the Gap;” a visual warning phrase issued
to rail passengers to take caution while crossing a spatial gap between the train door and the station platform. “Mind The Gap,” can also be applied to how we as caregivers board each train in our parenting journey. With each train we board, whether it’s for state services or employment opportunities, we sometimes forget to “mind the gap,” and fall into a hole, impeding our journey. Also, not unlike NYC Transit, the Underground has a web of train lines, and without the proper guide, you can get lost. However, organizations such as RBAF can serve as a navigator—helping you avoid pitfalls by providing information and tools necessary for each step of your journey. Here in the bunker, one woman actually cried when I told her about RBAF. She shared that though her son is 10, she is still struggling with accepting his autism diagnosis. She lives one hour away from Rockaway, and emphatically stated, “I’m coming to the next meeting. I can’t wait to meet the other parents. This is exactly what I need to help my son.” Bancroft, a nonprofit provider of programs and services for individuals with autism and other special needs, conducted a national online poll of parents with autistic children ages three to
21. Of the 200 parents surveyed, more than 60% cited independence in adulthood as their top concern, although less than 20 percent of those same respondents have a comprehensive transition plan to support their child. Eighty percent found access to services difficult, 52.6% reported concerns that their children don’t have friends or a peer group at school. Folks, join RBAF in “minding the gap,” and turn those num-
bers around! Together, let’s put Rockaway on the map as an oasis of information, help and opportunities for autistic individuals and their families. Stay tuned! Wrestle Talk RIC FLAIR'S LAST MATCH ANNOUNCED & MORE By Eric Jayden
As previously reported here on Wrestle Talk, Ric Flair's Last Match has been announced for July 31, 2022 at The Fairgrounds in Nashville, TN, as Ric will be teaming up with his son-in-law Andrade El Idolo to take on the team of Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. This is promising to be a great and entertaining match with other matches on the card that have been already announced, like Kerry & Ricky Morton with Robert Gibson in the corner going against Brian Pillman Jr and Brock Anderson with Arn Anderson in the corner. Also, in Tag Team action will be The Von Erichs vs The Briscoes. Ric Flairs Last Match Show is part of the Starrcast V Huge Event starting Friday, July 29, Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31, with each
date stacked with wrestling events and matches. Tickets for the event can be purchased at http://www. starrcast.com Shifting over to the WWE, it’s been announced that Matt Riddle will be facing Seth Rollins at this year's WWE Premium Live Event "SummerSlam" on July 30, 2022 from Nashville, Tennessee. SummerSlam, will be televised live on the Peacock TV and on the WWE Network outside the United States. We have an update on AEW Superstar CM Punk Injury, as per the Wrestling Observer Radio, it appears that Punk will be returning back sooner than expected and is believed to be back in the ring in a couple of months, possibly for the AEW PPV 'All Out" or "Full Gear." Fans have been waiting for CM Punk's return and his scheduled
match against Jon Moxley, who is the Interim AEW World Heavyweight Champion. We will keep you posted. The Question of the Week comes from Janely H. in Far Rockaway and she asked, "Will Sasha Banks come back to the WWE after walking out?" Janley, in wrestling there is a saying "Never Say Never" but at this time I'm not sure if she will be returning back to the WWE or
maybe she will be going to another wrestling promotion like AEW. In addition, I haven't heard any news or rumors coming from her camp about anything. Janely, it's something we will just have to wait and see what develops. Thank you for all the email questions that have been sent in please continue to send them in to eavil183@yahoo.com .Have a great weekend!
