DOT Seeks Feedback on Commuter Van Service By Katie McFadden
Does Rockaway need more dollar vans? A letter recently sent to Community Board 14 District Manager Jon Gaska by the Department of Transportation requests feedback on a proposed commuter van service that would operate from Beach 108th to Mott Avenue. In a letter dated July 11, NYCDOT’s Christina Blackston detailed the proposal for the commuter van service, which would run along Shore Front Parkway from Beach 108th to Beach 73rd Street and continue onto Beach Front Road to Beach 67th Street, then would turn left to Rockaway Freeway and would continue to run downtown via the Freeway and Beach Channel Drive to
termine the public convenience and necessity for the service,” the letter said. As the letter was shared on the Friends of Rockaway Beach Facebook page, the overwhelming feeling was that this service would not be convenient or necessary. In a poll on the page, more than 500 people said they were opposed to the idea, while only about 70 said they were in favor of it. Those in opposition cited traffic issues in the summer, congestion caused by dollar vans in other areas of the peninsula and a history of reckless driving among van drivers. Many also said the service would be unnecessary with trains, busses and even a free ferry shuttle pilot that is underutilized from
Mott Avenue. The proposed service would allow for up to 20 vans to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. There would likely be no designated stops like a bus but would function as an express service between the ferry area and downtown Far Rockaway. The service would be operated by AJAP Trailways LLC, which has an address listed in Cedarhurst. The letter was sent to request feedback on the proposal. “This is to notify you that the New York City Department of Transportation is reviewing an application for a new proposed service van authority from AJAP Trailways LLC. Your written comments in support or in opposition to this service will enable NYCDOT to de-

the ferry landing to Far Rockaway, already in place. Those in favor suggested the service would reduce the need for private vehicles and would be a good form of transportation around the concessions. No matter how you feel, all are encouraged to send comments to Gaska and DOT themselves. If interested in commenting, concerns and questions can be addressed to Gaska at:

Written comments can also be submitted by mail to: New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Transportation Planning and Management, 55 Water Street, 6th Floor New York, NY 10041. Please cite reasons for why the service would or would not meet public convenience and necessity.

BOYLEING POINTS
I was out on a boat with four Captain Queegs last week, though only one knew how to sail. He could boast about that but the others were his equal or worse when it came to screaming paranoia, outsized delusion, and general insanity. Of course, I’m talking about my brothers. One of those brothers will be pleased, no matter what, because he appears in this week’s column. He says it’s the only reason to read Boyleing Points— if he’s in it or can take claim for that week’s topic. He’s often mistaken. I once wrote about George Clooney and Brad Pitt without mentioning their names and this brother bought me dinner. He mailed the column to co-workers. Yes, I broke Rule Number One and left Rockaway on a hot, summer day. But this was an
Page 5
emergency meeting called to talk about last week’s column regarding genes, Alzheimer’s, and dying—topics my barrel-oflaugh brothers can’t get enough of. We decided to meet on a boat because none of us can swim. And we like the potential for doom. The bonus being, we wouldn’t ever know if we’d get Alzheimer’s if the boat flipped. Of course, we’re competitive, so we argued about who could doggie paddle the longest before sinking. The DNA results had been clear: Kevin, (and brothers) you are unlikely to have a unibrow but you can’t swim. Your ancestors swam like Irish potatoes stuffed with lead. None of us were surprised by these results. We wondered if our ancestors were like us. They’d rather drown than ask for help, rather drown than die of embarrassment. If you’re like me, you probably don’t remember that I wrote about 23andMe and how their DNA testing reveals all sorts of health traits. You can find out if
you’re susceptible to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, for example. I decided not to look at the results. What could you do if you found Alzheimer’s was a possibility? The youngest brother on the three-hour tour said, “I wouldn’t have to look, I already have it.” Catskills dialogue followed. “How could you say that?” “Say what?” “That you have Alzheimer’s.” “When did I say that?” In between criticizing my column and drinking beer, we talked about death. Sometimes the subjects were combined. “I almost died waiting for one of your sentences to end. How many subordinate clauses can one man take?” How’s that for wild inappropriateness? You’re out in New York Harbor, sailing delightfully across the water, drinking a cold one and this guy’s taking shots about subordinate clauses. Jeez. Another beer, please, before a grammar fight breaks out. I’m still bristling. The guy’s a freak-
ing dangling participle. My oldest brother said we should all die in chronological order and the other three quickly agreed. The second oldest said we would revisit the idea after the oldest kicks. The sailboat brother insisted he wanted a Viking funeral. He said if he goes first, he expects us to shoot flaming arrows at his death raft as it floats away. His only regret would be not witnessing how bad things will go. How we’d probably set everything on fire except his Viking raft. And so it went as we sailed back to the marina, all of us chuckling. Smiling about the day. As we tied the boat, I thought about those DNA results. The testing said I’d likely prefer salty to sweet and that I share DNA with thousands of 23andMe customers. But the testing didn’t state the obvious thing: That I’m lucky. Lucky to share genes with brothers, brothers who I’m lucky to consider best friends.

Lime Could Have Bitter End By Katie McFadden
Looks like Lime might get squeezed—out of Rockaway. According to a report by The City, the Department of Transportation announced that the dockless bikeshare pilot in Rockaway will end after the summer. By this point, many are used to seeing the green bikes around town, that are readily available for rent to zip around the peninsula. Despite a few hiccups, like bikes being left in inconvenient places and vandalism, the program that began as a pilot last summer, has seemingly been a success. So much so that around Memorial Day weekend this year, Lime announced that their pilot was being extended through September and
expanded from 400 to 600 electric bikes, after the bikes were utilized more than 90,000 times. However, in some surprising news, on July 22, online news source, The City reported that the DOT would be ceasing the pilot after this summer in both Rockaway and Fordham, while working to make Staten Island’s bike share program a permanent fix. The Rockaway Times reached out to the DOT for confirmation of the report, which replied that Lime's end may not be so definite. "While the pilot program is ending, we have made no decision yet on permanently removing bikes. We will work with the community and bike share companies to determine the future. We will have more to say by the end
of the summer," DOT's Assistant Press Commissioner Scott Gastel said. According to Councilman Donovan Richards, who requested an expansion of the pilot earlier this year, he’s going to continue to fight for the service to stay in Rockaway. “We’ve seen the success of the dockless bike share pilot for residents and tourists all across the Rockaway Peninsula,” Richards said. “When it comes to our transit options, the one thing Rockaway residents can count on is disruptions, which is why the bike share program has served so many people regardless of whether they are heading to the beach, back home to public housing or just need to take a quick trip to the

Next Thursday, August 1, three priests from St. Francis de Sales will be guest bartenders at Jameson’s on Beach 129th starting at 8 p.m. You can show up thirsty and leave spiritually fulfilled (though what kind of spirits is up to you). Part of the proceeds during this Holy Happy Hour will benefit St. Francis. Father Bill, Father Jim, and Father Jomar behind the bar might be bigger than the Three Tenors. LIME'S FUTURE
Continued from Page 6 bank. Our office is committed to working with the Department of Transportation and Lime to ensure that this critical new mode of transit stays in the Rockaways for good.” The Rockaway Times also reached out to Lime for comment. Phil Jones, Senior Director of East Coast Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships at Lime, responded, saying, "We've really enjoyed serving the Rockaways and are proud of the partnerships we established there. Lime pedal-assist bikes have helped residents and visitors get around in an area where transit options are few and far between, furthering transportation equity in a fun and sustainable way. We view this pilot as a success and look forward to continuing to serve New Yorkers in more ways going forward." This news comes just about a week after the city announced that there will be a widespread expansion of another bikeshare program—Citibike. This
THURSDAY, JULY 25, 2019 docked bike option will double its service area to 70 miles and triple its fleet to 40,000 bikes by 2023. However, not in Rockaway. The expansion will include Ridgewood, Queens, more areas in Manhattan and the south Bronx, and then neighborhoods like Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush and Sunset Park in Brooklyn, and Sunnyside, Maspeth, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Corona in Queens. In the meantime, e-scooters could be the next Lime bike. In June, a bill to legalize e-scooter rentals in New York City, except for Manhattan, passed state legislation. It is not clear if the bill has been signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo or when the program could potentially start. Lime, which operates e-scooters in other big cities around the country, says the idea has gained local support from groups like the Rockaway Youth Task Force, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and Camp Rockaway, which all signed letters of support prior to the vote.

Local Brings A Taste of West Africa to the Beach
There is a saying that youth is wasted on the young, but local 24-year-old BabaJide “Jide” Alao, a model, surfer, college student and now budding food entrepreneur, disputes that notion as this summer, time was of the essence to introduce his beloved Nigerian food to his hometown, Rockaway with his food cart, TheCradleNYC. From Nigerian jollof rice, fish, beef, chicken, fried plantains and even ewa oloyin (sweet beans), Alao pulled no punches in curating the menu for TheCradleNYC, and says he not only wanted to showcase
Being health conscious is something constantly on Alao’s mind, as a professional model, who surfs as a hobby. “I am a model, and for the last five years I’ve been cooking my own food, and working on ways to keep in shape, without necessarily having to be in the gym five to seven days a week, so I wanted to produce a product that’s healthy without comprising the Nigerian rich flavor. For example, the sweet potatoes, the chicken and cod fish are baked, as opposed to fried. The only food that is fried are the sweet plantains, which is a staple in Nigerian dishes,” Alao said. The young chef, who is represented by NYC’s premier modeling agency, Major Model NY, models not just stateside, but internationally for brands such as Coca-Cola, Fubu, Warby Parker, Apple, Fila, Quilo, Bombas, FinishLine, UrbanZen (DKNY) and Tiffany&Co. Also
he is finishing up his electrical engineering degree at NYC College of Technology. From modeling to school and now his West African food business, how does the young millennial balance it all? Alao admitted that it’s tough. “Pursuing modeling, while simultaneously finishing up my degree has been hard. For example, I would get a call about a modeling assignment in North Carolina, Los Angeles, or South Africa, and have to leave immediately, but I feel all these experiences are strengthening my vocational aspirations, and personal growth. “For example, while I was modeling for three months in South Africa, I saw that there weren’t many Nigerian restaurants, so I made it my mission to find a Nigerian food market. Once I found it, I was cooking Continued on page 11

authentic Nigerian food, but also slightly infuse traditional recipes with a healthy twist. “One of our most popular dishes that I personally worked on with a chef is the Nigerian jollof rice, which I chose to make vegan. (Jollof rice is usually red in color and consists of rice cooked with tomatoes, tomato paste, oil, onions, salt, a variety of spices and hot peppers). My vegan Nigerian jollof rice tastes good, if not better than regular jollof rice that usually incorporates beef or chicken stock. I created it from a vegan perspective to offer something healthy for beachgoers and Nigerians in general. Being a Nigerian, we do eat a lot of carbs and foods that are fried, so I tried to offer a health-conscious menu, that’s still very tasty,” he said.

flew out there, and amazingly it was the food cart that I had sketched out. I drove it myself to Rockaway, over 3,000 miles, but totally worth it.” When asked why the name, TheCradleNYC, Alao’s response was truly endearing. “A baby is carried in a cradle, which translates to my food cart business. This is my first endeavor—hopefully of many, many to come—so TheCradleNYC represents something that I cherish and care for on a daily basis because it’s what I love to do,” he said. TheCradleNYC has been up and running since July on the boardwalk and judging from
the reviews, Alao is making a big hit. “Folks who try the food are blown away. Their perception of what Nigerian food tastes like has completely turned around. They see for themselves that Nigerian food is not too spicy, overly seasoned or unhealthy. I only use 100 percent natural ingredients, and people can taste the difference, and keep coming back for more. For example, I open at noon, and by 3 p.m., I’m already sold out. It’s truly amazing!” Alao shared. Besides the food cart, TheCradleNYC also caters. The menu offers vegan options, including appetizers, entrees and homemade fruit beverages. So folks, to get a taste of Nigeria, you don’t have to go far, just head to Beach 73rd Street. every day for myself and my roommates, who were from different parts of the world, and got to try my Nigerian dishes, while I was there cheffing it up. So yes, I’m really busy, but again just being in South Africa was a step forward to my dream of creating my own West African food business,” Alao said. Alao moved to the U.S. from Nigeria at the age of five, and lives in Arverne with his family. He shared that his love for cooking Nigerian food comes from his mom. “My mom is a professional chef. Before I was born, she had two restaurants in Lagos, Nigeria. Even now, she still cooks and does catering for some Nigerian parties. So, she’s a big inspiration to me, not just as a lover of eating Nigerian food, but creatively cooking it for others, “Alao said. When asked why he chose to plant his TheCradleNYC food cart in Rockaway, as opposed
to Manhattan or another borough, Alao said, “I have lived in Rockaway for over 15 years, I know the people, and have witnessed the community’s evolution, especially since Hurricane Sandy. We’ve evolved into this beautiful beach town and have become more diverse in terms of food venues and things to do. Rockaway doesn’t have any Nigerian food at all, and I was determined to introduce my culture’s food to the community I grew up in.” Alao said that it took a year and a half for him to fine tune TheCradleNYC’s menu and concept for the food cart. “Getting the food cart was a very big determination. It was an endeavor that truly pushed my limits to earnestly illustrate how much I wanted to open this business. Initially, I designed how I wanted the food cart to look and function, but it would have cost me upwards of $11K. I prayed and thought about it, and realized it would be too much for me. So, I found a food cart that was more cost effective in Portland, Oregon. I

Stop & Shoppers, Meet Marty By Katie McFadden
Danger, Will Robinson, Danger! Cleanup in aisle five! A new visitor has some feeling like they’re in an episode of “Lost in Space” while shopping for groceries at Stop & Shop. But don’t fret—it’s just Marty! At the beginning of the year, Retail Business Services and Badger Technologies announced that they would be deploying 500 robots to GIANT/MARTIN’S and Stop & Shop supermarkets around the country. A few weeks ago, the robot—named Marty—landed in Arverne by the Sea, much to the delight, and fright, of shoppers. The more than six-foottall, grey, mobile robot with giant googly eyes and a smile with a label that explains his purpose, is now scanning the aisles at Stop & Shop. What does Marty do? According to Stephanie Shuman, External Communications Manager for Stop & Shop, “Marty is used to identify hazards, such
as liquid, powder and bulk food item spills so that associates can take corrective action. Marty scans the stores about 12 times per day, seven days per week. It’s also not just ‘spills’ that he identifies—it’s potential hazards, which is much more broad. This could include items like flat paper on the floor, tissue paper, twist ties, or produce items that could potentially cause a customer to slip.” Curious seven-year-old Christian Williams recently tried to interview his new shopping buddy, Marty, for his Little Kids News YouTube channel, only to find that the robot isn’t very interactive and doesn’t have too much to say other than its constant beeping as it scans aisles. But customers are hearing a lot more noise in Stop & Shop. Shuman explained that when Marty detects a spill, it says aloud, "Caution, hazard detected,” in both English and Spanish to alert shoppers. An announcement is then made

over the store’s PA system to let store associates know that a hazard has been detected and needs to be resolved. This has resulted in a lot more announcements for “Cleanup in aisle…” According to some shoppers, the announcements seem to be overkill. “I was there Friday and saw Marty. I was pretty
surprised to see him,” Debbie Firestone said. “In the 10 minutes I was in the store, I heard, 'Cleanup is needed on aisle 13, cleanup is needed on aisle 11, cleanup is needed on aisle 10,' over and over on the loudspeaker around five times in the 10 minutes I was there. I went to customer service for something and I said to the worker, ‘this is driving me crazy, I can’t even imagine how badly you want to kill this robot.’ She laughed and said yeah, but she doesn’t even hear it anymore.” Others say its sheer size has been an inconvenience. “That robot was definitely in my way during one shopping trip! Everywhere I went, there it was! I kept having to move out of its way. At one point I asked it to stop following me,’ Debora Aponte said. According to Shuman, Marty is actually intended to be beneficial to both staff and customers. “Associates who previously conducted inspections around Continued on page 13

STOP & SHOPPERS, MEET MARTY

the store for spills and hazards now have the time back to focus on other things. They have much more time to focus on their customers, which was a key objective here,” she said. However, according to some, Marty could still use a tuneup. “My 10-year-old daughter loves it. Only issue, she was still
in slightly wet clothing from surf camp and the silly robot thought she was a spill. The floor manager had to come over a reset the robot twice,” Lauren Monte said. Monte’s daughter wasn’t the only “hazard.” According to another shopper, “The one in Arverne came up to me, stopped for a second then said hazard detected. Then the PA announcement came. ‘Clean up needed in aisle whatever the number.’ I looked at it and said, ‘you need some help, your programmer clearly did not do a good job.’” While Marty is providing some laughs, others say it has them leery. Some are calling it “creepy” and many have been startled by it. “It was a perfect Candid Camera or what would you do moment. It scared the s*** out of me. Marty came onto me suddenly and unexpectedly at the Arverne Stop & Shop. It was quite a moment. Another customer who witnessed my reaction began laughing hysterically at me,”a customer named Emily said. Others think Marty may actually have them on can-
Page 13
did camera. “How do we truly know what its real purpose is, as no one bothered to introduce this gadget to the customers. For all I know it’s scanning me to see if I have stolen something or have a weapon,” one customer said. Another added, “Personally, I don't trust them and I think it has way too many sensors to just do what they say it does.” Others have expressed concerns over what the futuristic robot could mean for the future. “Another job lost to a robot,” suggested one local. Others expanded upon this. “I believe this is a plan to gain acceptance and familiarity with similar robots that will have added capabilities and eventually replace some paid workers. This is partly because of the minimum wage increases as well as things like paid family medical leave, health insurance and other costs associated with employing real people,” a customer named Dan said. However, some say they wish it did have other capabilities beyond reporting spills, other-
wise calling it a “waste of money.” Magali Ortiz is among those who believes Marty could be more productive. “He’s adorable, but he’s pretty useless. Perhaps if he vacuums up the one grape instead of announcing 'clean-up needed in aisle two' for a human to run to, it would make more sense,” she said. Some may not have met Marty yet. The robot has not been spotted at Rockaway Park’s Stop & Shop. However, besides ABTS, he has been spotted nearby at the store on Burnside Avenue in Inwood and in some locations near Ozone Park and Howard Beach. According to Shuman, the locations were chosen for a reason. "Marty was put in stores that could support it from a store layout standpoint, ensuring there’s enough space for Marty to move about,” she said. However, with the robot still making its debut, there’s potential that Marty could be more of a regular when shopping at supermarkets. So while you’re shopping, watch out, Marty is coming through.

Gun Threat Prompts Police Response to Ferry By Katie McFadden
There was a bit of a scare on the 9:15 a.m. ferry out of Rockaway on Wednesday, July 24, when passengers realized they were being escorted by NYPD boats. Police were responding to a call of a man that said he had a gun. According to police sources, a Hispanic male in his 50s, who appeared to be disheveled and an emotionally disturbed person (EDP), boarded the ferry without a ticket. According to a passenger on the boat who provided updates on the Citizen App, the man “was pissed they made him wait to board last because he needed to buy a ticket on board,” and the man was belligerent to the crew. According to the passenger, at some point, the man announced, “that’s why I keep the gun in my pocket.” This po-
tential threat caused the crew to notify police. As the man rode on the top dock of the boat, most were unaware of what was taking place until NYPD escorts started following the boat. When the ferry docked at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park, the boat was met by a huge police presence that included two NYPD harbor boats, a helicopter, ESU with long guns and about two dozen cops. Cops boarded the boat, and according to Brigid Bergin on WNYC, who was a passenger on the boat, they first knocked on the door of the bathroom and told the occupant to come out, but it was a teenage girl, rather than the perpetrator. The police then located the perp on the top deck of the ferry and he was removed without incident. According to some passen-

gers, it appeared that the man was released, but according to police sources, he was taken into custody and charges are pending. The boat remained at BAT while it was searched. No gun was found on board. The fer-
ry was delayed by about half an hour before continuing on to Pier 11, where it arrived at around 10:35 a.m. Once the boat docked, the captain explained what had happened to passengers. No one was harmed in the incident.

The Youthmarket Is Now Open
Need some fresh produce? Consider stopping by GrowNYC’s Youthmarket Farmstand in Far Rockaway. On Saturday, June 20, representatives from New York City Economic Development Corporation in partnership with GrowNYC, Councilman Donovan Richards and the Rockaway Youth Task Force, launched GrowNYC’s Youthmarket Farmstand. As a key milestone of the City’s Downtown Far Rockaway rezoning, this GrowNYC Youthmarket Farmstand
will empower young people in Far Rockaway to develop their entrepreneurial skills by teaching them how to run farm stands in their local community. Through GrowNYC’s Youthmarket Farmstand program, young people sell fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms while learning about health, nutrition, the environment, and regional agriculture. In addition to teaching participants about promotion, merchandising, and customer service skills, the Youthmarket will increase the availability of fresh produce in the Far Rockaway neighborhood. The Downtown Far Rockaway Youthmarket Farmstand will be open to the public every Saturday through November 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1002-1004 Beach 20th Street.

Pickles Will Be Back
The pickles are coming. After an uproar in response to the news that the beloved Pickle People wouldn’t be returning to the boardwalk craft fairs, an alternative option has been proposed. A few weeks ago, The Rockaway Times detailed the drama taking place among the boardwalk craft fairs, including a favorite vendor, the Pickle People, saying they weren’t welcome to Rockaway anymore as a food vendor. The Pickle People recently provided an update, saying that discussions are still taking place with the
Parks Department. According to Leeann Jacobian, the Parks Department claims they didn’t know the Pickle People had been packaging their pickles on site, going against their alleged rule of only being able to sell pre-packaged pickles. Parks said they can only sell pre-packaged pickles but according to Jacobian, doing so would ruin the product with the fermented pickle jars being out on a hot summer day. Jacobian says they have all the permits to sell their pickles as they’ve been doing for the past 30 or so years. Discussions will continue to take place as to if the Pickle People can continue to operate as they were at the boardwalk fairs. In the meantime, a Pickle Pop-Up is coming. Connolly’s on Beach 95th Street has invited the Pickle People to sell their pickles on their property on Saturday, August 24, from noon until about 7 p.m. So save the date, for a piña colada and pickle date!

Ulrich Funds Community Clean-up Initiatives As part of his ongoing effort to boost the quality of life in the community, Councilman Eric Ulrich funded a clean-up initiative in Rockaway through Wildcat Service Corporation—a nonprofit organization that provides job opportunities and resources for unemployed and underemployed New Yorkers. The Councilman's clean-up initiative, which officially kicked off last week, will regularly target problematic areas along Rockaway Beach Boulevard, between Beach 88th Street and Beach 94th Street; and will run through Labor Day. "I am thrilled to announce that this year's budget will again include crucial resources to beautify and clean up Rockaway. This commercial corridor along Rockaway Beach Boulevard sees a lot of foot traffic—especially during
the summer months. While the additional foot traffic is great for our local businesses, it also makes the area more prone to trash," said Councilman Eric Ulrich. "I'd like to thank Wildcat for their continued partnership, and for all they do to keep our communities clean. I am confident that this initiative will go a long way in helping to keep
the strip beautiful during peak season." Ulrich's partnership with Wildcat to clean Rockaway Beach Boulevard is just one of many recent initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life throughout the district. Earlier this month, the Councilman announced the relaunch of his no-cost graffiti removal program—also through Wildcat. The district-wide initiative, funded by Ulrich, removes graffiti from local businesses, private homes and public spaces. Since its implementation, the program has helped remove graffiti from hundreds of vandalized properties. In May, Ulrich announced a clean-up initiative with Wild-
Protect your world
cat in Breezy Point. In partnership with the Breezy CoOp, the initiative removed overgrown weeds and trash on the National Parks Service (NPS) property at State Road, between Beach 193 Street and the Breezy Co-Op entrance. The project funded by Ulrich marks the first time the property has been serviced by any public agency in years. "This year, my office has made several investments that will beautify our communities—and we are far from finished. Over the next few weeks, I will be announcing a number of clean-up initiatives in the pipeline," Councilman Ulrich said. "I am committed to making this district more beautiful than it ever has been."

STEM CELLS
Today I would like to discuss stem cells and their uses. This is an extremely complex field and I can’t possibly cover it all, but I would like to discuss some basics about them. Stem cells are essentially undeveloped cells that, in some cases, have the potential to develop into any type of mature cell found in the body. As you can imagine, this potential has created a whole new dimension in the treatment and curing of human diseases and conditions. The first type of stem cell is the embryonic stem cell, or ESC. These cells are harvested from a human blastocyst, which is a human embryo at about five days after fertiliza-
tion, or conception if you prefer. The blastocyst attaches to the wall of the uterus and becomes a human fetus. Harvesting ESCs has many ethical and moral issues, to put it mildly. Stem cells may also be obtained from umbilical cord blood immediately following birth. They may also be found in an adult’s tissues including in bone marrow, adipose (fat) tissue, and blood. These adult stem cells must be reprogrammed so they can be used to create other forms of tissue. After reprogramming they are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs. The word pluripotent means that the stem cell can form
Page 27
many types of human cells. Pluripotent stem cells are descended from totipotent ones. Totipotent stem cells can form every type of human cell and, in theory, could be used to form a complete organism, which is another ethical slippery slope. Every day, more uses are being found for stem cells. Let’s look at some areas where stem cells are currently being used. The first area is in skin diseases. Skin regeneration has been used to restore skin in patients with a heritable blistering skin disease called epidermolysis bullosa. Autologous (from the same person) stem cells have been obtained from skin biopsies and used to grow new skin. These were iPSCs. They are also being explored to grow new skin for burn victims. Other uses for stem cells include repairing heart muscle damaged by a heart attack, repairing the retina in the back of the eye which has been affected by diabetes or macular degeneration, repairing skeletal muscles in muscular dystrophy, aging, and other muscle
diseases, repairing nerve tissues in Parkinson’s disease and other neurologic conditions, repairing the pancreas to make insulin in type I diabetes, and treating various blood diseases like leukemias and lymphomas. Because the use of stem cells is really just in its infancy, the potential uses for them are endless, perhaps one day slowing down or stopping the aging process itself. One downside to stem cell therapy is that, in most cases, the patient’s immune system must be suppressed, opening the door to infections. Also, in some cases, stem cells have grown into the wrong type of tissue, including tumors. A more general concern is the rapidly growing direct-to-consumer market, especially on the internet, for unproven stem cell therapies which are ethically dubious and potentially dangerous. This has the potential to both threaten and undermine the field of stem cell research. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Healthy Seeds May you find your path in life by offering your services without any accolades. Recently, I asked myself some simple questions. How does one manifest her/his life’s dream? Why are some people blessed with abundance and others striving for contentment and success? How do we help make the world a better place to live in? How does one live with integrity, honesty and dignity? What is life really about? What path will you choose when the time comes to make choices that serve you and others? I don’t know all the answers
but I do feel a life of service is more rewarding and satisfying than a life lived purely for oneself. We may suffer in life when least expected and we may also find beautiful friends along the way that offer support and love. The silver lining is always there, you just have to open your eyes and ears to your surroundings. People who give without any expectations will receive bountiful positive energy from the universe. We cannot force someone to hear a message they are not ready to receive, but we must never underestimate the power
of planting a seed. What seed would you like to plant in your life? Plant the seed then go out and seek some kind of service with someone you could help with kindness and love. Do your service with nothing in return and see what happens. It could take years but the rewards will be tripled. I received this message in one of our yoga classes taught by Sarah Arikian, my esteemed colleague. “Good news! Cause for celebration is here, and it is time for you to enjoy the fruits of your labor. The angels want you to know that this is a light-filled time in your life. You have been working toward making changes, and your intentions have now manifested into form. This is the time for you to fill your heart with a warm feeling of gratitude. “The angels ask you, through this card, to hold strong in this gratitude. You are like a gardener who plants seeds and nurtures them because she has faith that her labors will yield new growth. Keep watering and tending to your seeds, and you will see
Page 29 them sprouting through the surface. The angels are your co-gardeners, who help you tend to your crop.” Powerful and meaningful to so many of us. Perhaps this speaks to you. Celebrations are wonderful ways to say thank you. Celebrate life in this moment. Embrace what is here and let go of the way you thought life should be. Respect one another and reach out to help someone who has lost their way. Lately, I have witnessed so many friends and family taking care of their loved ones. They are doing God’s work and I admire their strength and integrity. It is not easy to oversee care for an aging parent or a sick spouse. Your loyalty and love are inspiring. This is truly one of the highest services you can do. I applaud you and thank you for making this world a better place to live in. May you be rewarded with ease of heart, good health and peace. You are our angels on earth. Perhaps the angels in heaven are helping you too. Yes, I believe in guardian angels.

Surf’s Up Dude!
I didn’t grow up in Rockaway, which my mermaid likes to remind me of. I grew up in Greenpoint, prior to the hipster revolution and all those cool dudes coming to Rockaway with surfboards on the A train. I did grow up learning to body surf from my summers in bungalows on Beach 87th Street in the early 1960s and then again in the late 70s on Beach 100th Street, but the thought of being over my head on a surfboard always frightened me. Being closer to the end then the beginning, I figured why not give surfing a go. Somehow, I convinced my younger brother, his younger wife, and my mermaid to join me on this nutty notion of a surfing safari. So, we booked some time with those good guys at
Locals Surf School on Beach 69th Street. We picked the hottest day of the year, maybe the decade, this past Saturday, to jump on the bikes and head downtown. Forgetting that Locals was located at 69th Street, and not checking to see, I boldly told my companions that the ride would only be to 90th Street. Twenty-one blocks later we arrived at our destination with some grumbling about me fudging the location. As we were all novices to surfing, and a little nervous about filling out the liability disclaimers, we made our way across the hot sand to the Locals tent set-up. A little bit about Locals: they are just that, Mike Reinhardt and Mike Kololyan are the co-founders and grew up in Rockaway. They both were way ahead of the curve on the surfing craze in Rockaway, and they have been fol-
lowed by other surf schools trying to replicate their success. I like the Locals guys; they are cool dudes. When we got to the tent, Mike K. was on duty, and he could not have been nicer. He set us up with our instructor, Nick. Nick took us to the far end of the beach where our watery exploits would be hardly noticed. He went over the basics and got us into the water quickly as the air temperature reached triple digits. There were waves on Saturday, and they looked larger as we got closer to them. The mermaid, sensing danger, opted to head back to shore after her first try. Which by the way, saw her halfway standing and surfing. I was up next and just about made it up before I tipped into the drink. My brother, the younger, got to his knees and found the water quickly too. By the way, given the temperature, these were not bad outcomes at all. Then my sister-in-law, mer-
maid-in-training, got, on the board and she surfed all the way in! I guess growing up in Florida has its benefits. Nick could not have been nicer, as he gave us all encouraging tips. And my brother and I did various forms of surfing, none as good as the mermaid-in-training. Then applying pressure on the chief mermaid, we convinced her to come back out. And with Nick’s encouragement, the mermaid surfed the hell out of the next wave. It wasn’t long after leaving the water that we realized that surfers are strong dudes and dudettes, because all our muscles were pounding and aching from paddling and “popping-up” on the board. We must have been in the water for about an hour and a half, maybe two hours tops, but we were all spent. A great day, and a great way to beat the heat. And nobody does it better than the Locals, trust me! Give it a shot.

Anniversaries of Note
The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing was celebrated this past Saturday (July 20) by many around the world who, rightfully, recognize the feat as one of America’s greatest achievements. But alas, the social justice sotted journalists out there, whose lack of historical context and ignorance of true oppression makes their re-
ality bubble impenetrable, just had to find fault with it. The complaint is now that NASA and its Apollo program's misogynistic gender bias kept women from going to the moon, and continues to make it more difficult for female astronauts to this day. More than 20 years before Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space back in 1983, thirteen women pilots successfully completed the tests used in the initial Mercury Astronaut Candidate Testing Program. The first woman to participate, Jerrie Cobb, was even tested in the multiple axis space test inertia facility at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and passed with flying colors. The testing was initiated by Dr. William Randolph Lovelace, who was responsible for screening candidates for the Mercury training program. After testing male

candidates, he decided to see if women might also be suitable for spaceflight. The testing began in 1960. Twenty outstanding women pilots were recruited; thirteen successfully completed the initial testing. One of the participants, Bernice Steadman of Traverse City, Michigan, says the hardest part of the testing wasn't any of the physical discomforts—such as having ice water injected in the ears or swallowing three feet of rubber tubing— but the overwhelming disappointment she felt when the decision was made to discontinue the testing of women in July 1961, because President Eisenhower had mandated that the original NASA astronauts be test pilots. The decision came after 12 of the women had successfully passed the first phase and were eager to follow Jerrie Cobb, who had completed subsequent phases of the
testing. The women lobbied Congress to be reinstated to the training program, but were quietly ignored after Vice President Lyndon Johnson, who wanted no part of a female astronaut corps, quashed their aspirations by writing in big bold letters, "LET'S STOP THIS NOW!" in a note to NASA. Ultimately, in 1978, NASA announced the names of 35 new astronaut candidates, including a group of six women to officially belong to a new astronaut class— Shannon W. Lucid, Margaret Rhea Seddon, Kathryn D. Sullivan, Judith A. Resnik, Anna L. Fisher and Sally K. Ride. Since then, more than 40 American women have entered space, serving on the various shuttle flights from 1983 to 2011, with some assigned as crew members on the International Space Station. In 1986, astronauts Continued on page 41

The City Planning Commission (CPC), acting as lead agency, issued a Notice of Completion on May 3, 2019 for a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Peninsula Hospital Site Redevelopment project in accordance with Article 8 of the Environmental Conservation Law, City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR), Executive Order No. 91, and the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA), 6 NYCRR 617. A public hearing on the DEIS will be held on August 14, 2019, at 10:00 a.m., at the CPC Public Hearing Room, located at 120 Broadway, Lower Concourse in New York, New York 10271. Comments are requested on the DEIS and will be accepted until Monday, August 26, 2019. The DEIS analyzes the potential environmental impacts of the Peninsula Hospital Site Redevelopment project, proposed for construction on an approximately 9.34-acre site located on Lot 1 of Block 15842, Lot 1 of Block 15843, and Lot 1 of Block 15857 in the Edgemere neighborhood of Queens Community District 14. The applicant, Peninsula Rockaway Limited Partnership, is requesting a zoning map amendment, City Map amendment, zoning text amendments, and LargeScale General Development (LSGD) special permits. The applicant also intends to seek public funding and/or financing from various City and New York State agencies and/or programs related to affordable housing development. The Proposed Actions would facilitate an approximately 2,371,000 gross square feet (gsf) development comprised of 11 buildings with approximately 2,200 income-restricted residential dwelling units (DUs). In addition, the proposed project would include approximately 72,000 gsf of retail space, including a fitness center and a supermarket, approximately 77,000 gsf of community facility space, approximately 24,000 square feet (sf) of publicly-accessible open space, and approximately 973 accessory parking spaces. The Proposed Project also includes a privately owned, open internal street network with two new 60-foot wide publicly-accessible private streets. The anticipated build year is 2034. The DEIS has identified significant adverse impacts with respect to community facilities (public elementary and intermediate schools, publicly funded child care centers), open space, transportation (traffic, public transit, and pedestrians), noise, and construction activities related to traffic and noise. The DEIS identified measures and/or potential measures that would fully or partially mitigate most significant adverse impacts; some impacts would remain unmitigated. Between DEIS and FEIS, potential mitigation measures will be studied further to determine whether they are feasible and whether any significant adverse impacts would remain unmitigated. The DEIS also considered alternatives to the Proposed Action that included a No-Action Alternative, a Lesser Density Alternative, and a No Unmitigated Significant Impacts Alternative. Copies of the DEIS may be obtained from the Environmental Assessment and Review Division, New York City Department of City Planning, 120 Broadway, 31st Floor, New York, New York 10271, Olga Abinader, Director (212) 720-3493; and on the New York City Department of City Planning’s website located at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/env_review/eis.shtml.

Slow Cooker Turkey Tenderloin By Anika Torrance from Livestrong.com
Ingredients: • 4 medium red potatoes, cut into chunks • 1 cup carrots, thickly-sliced on an angle • 1 small onion, coarsely diced • Salt and pepper • 1 turkey tenderloin, about 1 pound • 1 15-oz. can chicken or vegetable broth • 1/3 cup orange marmalade or apricot jelly (optional) Directions: 1) Spread the red potatoes, carrots and onions across the bottom of the slow cooker. 2) Sprinkle salt and pepper on all sides of the tenderloin. Lay it across the vegetables in the slow cooker.
3) Pour the broth over the tenderloin and vegetables. 4) Spoon 1/3 cup orange marmalade or apricot jelly over it. 5) Cover the slow cooker. Cook the tenderloin on high for four to five hours, or cook on high for one hour and low for six or seven hours. Insert a food thermometer into the center of the tenderloin, and make sure the internal temperature is at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit. If it's not, continue cooking for 15 minutes on high or 30 minutes on low and check again. 6) Remove the tenderloin and allow to rest for 10 minutes. Slice the meat, then arrange the slices and vegetables on a platter and serve. Tip: Serve the turkey tenderloin and vegetables topped with a spoonful of sauce from the slow cooker.

BRIDGES
Continued from Page 31 Judith Resnick and Christa McAauliffe when their space shuttle Challenger exploded, shortly after takeoff. Now, if all those social justice warriors out there really wanted to address a real instance of political gender bias and misogyny, I suggest they acquaint themselves with the observance of the 50th anniversary of Senator Ted Kennedy's "portrait of courage" when his car "lifted off " from a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island in Massachusetts on a Saturday on the evening of July 18, 1969, just as Apollo 11 was on its way to the moon, and landed upside down in the tidal Poucha Pond. "The Lion of the Senate" managed to extricate himself from the car, leaving 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, a respected political operative who had worked on the presidential campaign of Senator Kennedy’s brother, Robert Kennedy, alone and dying in the car submerged in six feet of water. Gentle-
man Ted made his way home to other members of his royal family and did not report the matter to police until 10 a.m the next morning. By the time assistance returned to the scene, many hours later, Mary Jo was dead, having drowned or otherwise suffocated. Of course, due to the delay in notifying the police, no blood test to ascertain Kennedy's alcohol levels at the time of the incident was possible. Kennedy denied drinking that night but after his death in 2009, his own son admitted that Teddy was a self-medicating alcoholic suffering from post-traumatic stress due to the assassinations of his two brothers, Jack (1963) and Bobby (1968). Who knows, absent Senator Kennedy's post-traumatic stress and less than stellar driving abilities, perhaps Mary Jo could have lived and gone on to join the ranks of today’s female astronauts. I guess we'll never know. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Putting Rockaway On the Map For Autism Awareness & Acceptance
BeMaeva will join the stage at Caracas.
It’s time to have fun while raising awareness. This Sunday, July 28, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. is Rockaway Beach Autism Families’ Summer Music Fest for Autism on the boardwalk at Caracas Beach 106th Concession. There’s going to be live music, raffle prizes, t-shirts and more. What better way to boost autism awareness and acceptance than with the unifying power of music on our beautiful boardwalk on the oceanfront? Even if you don’t personally know someone with autism, I encourage you to come and groove with us because I believe as a community, we can truly make a difference for in-
dividuals with autism on our peninsula. The families and parents really love this event because they feel the community’s support. Personally speaking, for me it’s an evening where I can step out from under the umbrella of the sometimes isolating time of parenting a child on the spectrum. It’s a time to dance and celebrate my pride in being an autism mom with a beautiful little girl, who is my light and I sincerely know is making an impact in this world. She is different, not less, and I feel so-called neurotypical people could learn a thing or two from her, and other individuals on the spectrum. For example, my daughter does not feel pressured to fit in, she’s just herself without feeling the need to change to please any societal norms. I wish when I was her age, I had the same self-acceptance to be content in my skin. Rockaway, please join Rockaway Beach Autism Families in working towards putting our peninsula and Broad Channel on the map for creating active and fulfilling job and recreational opportunities for individuals on the spectrum. The spectrum of autism is wide, and you would be both surprised and pleased to know the skills and passions that our
Page 43
loved ones have to offer. Not only would it be good for business, but also socially and ethically beneficial in showing that our community is willing and able to give our ASD populace a thriving chance to be productive and employable. What is Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF)? We are an alliance of alliance of like-minded individuals advocating for autism awareness, acceptance and education, while providing a plethora of recreational fun activities for families with loved ones on the autism spectrum. Our aim is to build inclusion within the community, especially the educational and vocational environment. Also, our mission is to reduce isolation of caregivers, share our experiences with other people who "get it," and just be REAL in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental environment. Feel free to come to our monthly parent support group meetings! RBAF’s July meeting is this evening, Thursday, July 25 at 7 p.m. at Knights of
Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street). The topic is SELF CARE FOR CAREGIVERS. Many parents face the challenge of balancing caring for themselves, while taking care of their loved ones on the spectrum. Learn and share your experiences on what works and why it is important to care for yourself— GUILT FREE. Perhaps you are a local business that can host a yoga, painting or surf session with parents. Sometimes we too need a little therapy to invigorate us for the tough days. So, save the date. This Sunday, July 28 at 6 p.m., hope to see you at Caracas for our Summer Music Fest for Autism Awareness and Acceptance 2019. Our music lineup includes Malagasy band BeMaeva, Cuban band, Proud Yuma, and local soul and rock musicmeisters, LL Duo!
