THE ROCKAWAY TIMES SANDCASTLE CONTEST IS SUNDAY!
Billy McClernon's USS Nichtern earned him first in the adult category last year.
Get your buckets and shovels ready! The 6th Annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest will be held this Sunday, August 14. And with some incredible prizes donated by local businesses, plus fun giveaways, it should be one of the best yet! While the contest is typically held on Beach 117th, this year we had to move some things around due to the ongoing construction work on our jetties and dunes. So this Sunday, head to Beach 109th for all of the action! Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the boardwalk. The contest begins promptly at 12:30 p.m. on the beach. Participants will have two hours (until 2:30 p.m.) to create whatever they want, whether it’s a sculpture or castle. As things start to wrap up, the judges will start to deliberate based on criteria such as creativity, composition and wow factor! They’ll have the tough job of picking the winners in the three age categories: 10 and Under, 11-20 and 21 and Over. We hope to see all ages on the sand! Winners will be announced sometime after 3:15 p.m. The coveted sandcastle trophies and gift certificates will be given to the first, second and third place winners (and maybe a runner up or two!) It is free to enter, and all participants will go home with something, as there will be plenty of giveaways during the contest. Latecomers are welcome, but registration will close at 1 p.m. It is
recommended to bring your own sand tools, but there will be some buckets and small shovels available for those who may not have them. This contest is made possible with sponsorship by The Rockaway Times, in partnership with the NYC Parks Department, who sets up the event space, and Councilwoman Joann Ariola, who is sponsoring some goodie bags. Plus, some local businesses are making this year’s contest extra special with generous donations of gift certificates towards the prize pool. Among them are The Rockaway Hotel, Roccos of Roc Beach, Mara’s Ice Cream Parlor, Bagel & Barista Station, Mazzone Hardware, Pico, Batesy’s, Callie’s, Polly & Esther, Carvel, The Meat Up Grill and Fat Cardinal Bakery. Gift certificates will be given out to the big winners in all age categories on Sunday, so show us your best! The Rockaway Times is also sponsoring some kinetic sand kits for our young runner up winners. While we want everyone to participate, those who just want to check out the competition are welcome too! As contestants have until 2:30 p.m. to finish, we suggest coming any time after 2 p.m. to see the sculptures really take shape! The weather looks perfect for Sunday, so come enjoy this free, fun community event! For any questions or info, email katie@rockawaytimes.com

Reward Offered for Info On Destruction of Shorebird Eggs It’s been a rough summer for the birds. The National Park Service (NPS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) are offering rewards for information leading to the conviction of the person(s) responsible for the intentional destruction of eggs and nests of federally protected birds like American oystercatcher and piping plover, during several incidents this summer. As part of the latest reward, NPS and USFWS is offering $5,000 for information that will lead to the arrest of whoever destroyed at least one American oystercatcher egg at the border of the Breezy Point Co-Operative and the National Park Service’s Gateway National Recreation Area Breezy Point Unit, Rockaway Point. American oystercatchers are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Maximum penalties under this act are $15,000 and/ or up to six months imprisonment for the take of each egg. While the date and time of the incident is un-
known, the destroyed egg(s) were discovered on July 6, 2022, at approximately 6:00 pm. Sadly, this came after a slew of other cruel actions towards these birds and their nests this summer. The USFWS is also offering a reward of up to $5,000 to eligible individuals for information that significantly furthers the investigations and/ or leads to enforcement actions for persons responsible for the following instances of the destruction of eggs and nests of American oystercatcher and piping plover in New York City and Long Island this breeding season: • Between 1:00 pm May 13 and 10:00 am May 15, 2022, approximately 57 American oystercatcher eggs and four piping plover eggs were taken from their nests between Beach 38 and Beach 57th on a New York City Parks beach. A blue hooded sweatshirt with a star pattern was discovered at the site next to broken American oystercatcher eggshells.
• On May 15, one dead piping plover adult was found at Beach 47th. • On or about May 20, two American oystercatcher nests were tampered with at Beach 64th Street. • Between May 23 and 24, a piping plover nest and the surrounding predator enclosure were intentionally destroyed on a New York State Parks beach at Robert Moses State Park in Babylon. • On June 11, protective fencing was destroyed, and individuals were observed installing tents within piping plover breeding areas at Beach 56th in Arverne. Three (3) piping plover eggs were missing from a nest after this event. • Between June 11 and 14, two piping plover nests and predator enclosures were intentionally destroyed at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh. • On June 26, unleashed dogs were

observed and eggs from a piping plover nest were taken within protected piping plover breeding areas on an ocean beach in the Town of Southampton, just east of the Shinnecock East County Park. The piping plover is protected as a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). Maximum penalties under the ESA are a fine of $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to six months for the take of each egg or individual bird. Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact either USFWS Special Agent Kathryn McCabe at (516) 318-7383; the NPS Jamaica Bay Unit 24-hour dispatch at (718) 354-4700; or 1-844-FWS-TIPS (397-8477). Local Pens ‘The Ultimate Doggy Directory’ By Katie McFadden
The dog days of summer can be kind of ruff, but it also makes for a good time to get in those last moments of summer reading. Luckily, “The Ultimate Doggy Directory,” penned by Rockaway resident, Joan Mettler, makes for a lighthearted, fun and easy read, any time of the year. Dogs don’t have to rely on humans for everything, do they? According to “The Ultimate Doggy Directory,” a guide written for dogs by dogs (and Joan), of course not. If a dog breaks a leg, he can go to a Setter. If they’re looking for a good menu, go to the Chow. Need some crocheting? Find your local Afghan. It’s just a few of the pawsitively punny tidbits you’ll find in Mettler’s book. “The Ultimate Doggy Directory,” an adult humor book made especially for animal lovers, focuses on 42 different dog breeds, with limericks and puns written about each, plus

In her 78 years, Mettler has shared a medley of talents from being a teacher for 24 years, a real estate agent, a piano player and more, but writing is something she does almost daily. Some may recognize Joan Mettler’s name from local newspapers. For more than 30 years, she’s written columns for papers such as Breezy Point’s, The Rockaway Point News, and The Wave, plus even some papers that are no longer around. And that just scratches the surface of her writing resume. She was also a lyricist for Broadcast Music Inc., wrote a myriad of poetry and even an off-Broadway musical called “Senior High,” but a book is a first. For Mettler, putting out a book was a bucket list must do that all began about four years ago. Where did the inspiration come from? the ‘Directory’ doubling as a color- Well, from her own dogs. “I was ing book, it makes for some fun for breeding golden retrievers a numthe whole family. “The Ultimate ber of years ago and I would hold Doggy Directory” is now available for purchase. LOCAL PENS ‘THE ULTIMATE DOGGY DIRECTORY’ Continued from Page 6 an annual Puppy Olympics, and at one, a group of puppy parents and my dogs were sitting around and they were so well behaved, I looked at them and said, ‘they’re like humans. These dogs are so terrific, I bet if they had a zipper on their stomach and I opened it up, little people would come out,’ and that is what gave me the idea of the dog book. The general theme is that dogs need not live in a human world—they can get along quite well in an all-dog world. So I break this book up with puns on breeds in categories, I called ‘Doggagories.’” The book features 11 different Doggagories in this “self-help book for dogs." Mettler’s main muse was her late golden retriever, Whimpy, who she names as co-author, Whimpy D. Dogg. “She writes the introduction,” Mettler said, adding that if readers find words that may appear
Joan Mettler and her goldens circa 1981. mispronounced or misspelled, she can blame Whimpy, because after all, she is a dog. Mettler says the process for making the book a reality was a bigger undertaking than she anticipated, but with the help of her illustrator, Paul Schell, they were able to get it just right. “I’m very proud of the finished product. I think it’s exact-
ly what I wanted it to be,” Mettler said. And, she says, it’s for everyone. “I believe it’s a family friendly book. It’s not read like a novel, it's merely captions and illustrations, and in the illustrations there are puns as well that will give people a chuckle. “This book is tender, it’s funny and it’s for everyone. As far as
youngsters are concerned, they can do the coloring and parents can read to them. I don’t think there’s a kid that doesn’t like to be read to. They can look at each illustration, which are absolutely magnificent and learn a lot about dog breeds. This book is for families and people who don’t have families. People can sit down with their dog at their side and laugh at each page. I really hope people get to see it because they’ll laugh their tails off.” “The Ultimate Doggy Directory” is available for purchase at: theultimatedoggydirectory.com Locals can get a bit of a discount. “For locals who want it, they can choose to have it delivered rather than paying the $10 mailing fee,” Mettler said. After releasing her first book, Mettler has caught the bug. She’s already working on her next project. “Right now, I’m writing memoirs. As I’ve gotten older, I have collected so much knowledge. It’ll all come out in a book,” she said.

The New Tommy’s Pizza By Dan Guarino
There’s a new slice in town in Broad Channel. Since opening three weeks ago, business has been good at Tommy’s Pizzeria and Restaurant at 915 Cross Bay Blvd, and both locals and visitors have been giving it high marks. “The first week they destroyed us, in a good way!” says owner Ronnie Barone with a smile. “Slammed.” So far Tommy’s has been serving up a variety of pizzas by the pie and slice, heroes, pinwheels, rolls and wings. Opting for a soft opening, Barone explains, allows him to refine his operation, develop his team of four, provide the best service and see what people like. “Buffalo chicken is very big here. And the ham and cheese rolls. Saturday on opening weekend I sold over a hundred of those,” he said. Soon enough, Barone says he’ll be ready to develop an expanded menu of pastas, entrees and more. But Tommy’s opening, soft or not, did not happen overnight. Barone himself has been in the pizza business for seven years. “I started out in Victoria’s in Gerritsen Beach, working with my cousin, Sal Genova. He bought the place, and he basically taught me the pizzeria business,” he said. Even then, Victoria Pizzeria had been a Brooklyn staple for several decades. When Genova bought a second pizza place on Liberty Avenue in Richmond Hill, also named Tommy’s, he sent Barone there. “Then he turned around and asked me if I wanted to buy it,” Barone recalls. The answer was yes. Meanwhile in Broad Channel, the island’s own Tommy’s Pizza had also been a cornerstone community business since it opened in 1967. In fact, having outlasted several other businesses, and changing hands at least once, it became the Channel’s only takeout and dine-in restaurant. But things did not look good last
Spring when its owner, Nino fell ill and could no longer continue the business. The steel shutters rolled down and neighborhood speculation went up as to whether the beloved pizza place would ever return. Barone also heard about the situation and contacted the owner. Barone came to check out the space and ultimately decided to buy the business and give it new life. “I decided to revamp the
whole place like new,” Barone said. “It took almost four months. We put a lot of work in to really give the community something.” To begin with, where the original shop took up only the front half of the building, he extended the new one all the way to the back. “The business is different now. Back when it started, it was just slices, pies, rolls,” he said. With plans for a new, expanded menu came a brand-new kitchen, coun-
ter and preparation areas and, for the first time, walk-in refrigeration units. “When I first walked in, I saw there weren’t many tables. I put the seating up front and the counter and everything in back,” Barone explains. Naturally there was a buzz as Tommy’s once again showed signs of life. “As I was here building, I can’t believe how many people stopped in. This place is a staple in the community,” Barone said. “The love and support from this neighborhood has been awesome. They couldn’t wait to have their pizza place back.” And Barone has been shown Broad Chanel hospitality ever since he arrived at the space. “Everyone is so welcoming here. That’s made me even more want to make this place the best it can be,” he said. Barone notes “I want to make a menu for the neighborhood. I’m hearing from a lot of people on the phone, ‘Do you have this, do you have that?’ Right now, we’re throwing different things out here to see what people like. People are coming in and trying different things. They’re pretty open to that here.” Showing off a wide variety of colorful, imaginative pizzas from his Richmond Hill shop, including a heart-shaped pie with a pepperoni rose, it is clear Barone is ready to keep things fresh at Tommy’s and offer a lot. “The people here,” he says, are one of his favorite things about Broad Channel. “This is definitely a hidden gem of a place. These people have made me want to go above and beyond.” Looking to the future of the new Tommy’s Pizza, Barone, who’s also a new dad, says “We are definitely going to be here a long time, serving delicious food to this community.” Tommy’s Pizza & Restaurant, located at 915 Cross Bay Blvd, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Delivery is available. Affordable Housing Complex & Far Rock Upgrades Complete New York City Mayor Eric Adams was in town last week to celebrate the completion of an affordable housing development and major infrastructure upgrades in downtown Far Rockaway. On Thursday, August 4, Mayor Adams joined local elected officials such as Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson, Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers, Senator James Sanders, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and others for a ribbon cutting on “Beach 21st,” a building offering 224 affordable homes and infrastructure upgrades enhancing street safety, climate resiliency, and quality of life, all completed ahead of schedule. Together, the two projects brought $234 million in investment to downtown Far Rockaway — delivering on key commitments from the “Downtown Far Rockaway Roadmap for Action,” a comprehensive plan released in 2016 to revitalize the
neighborhood and improve quality of life for local residents. “These projects exemplify what it means for New York to become a ‘City of Yes,’” Mayor Adams said. “This is the kind of community-led and community-supported investment we want to see more of and a prime example of government working the right way for the people of this city — getting this done ahead of schedule and under budget. Today is a great day for the Rockaways and another great day of ‘Getting Stuff Done’ for New Yorkers.”
Led by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), and the New York City Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the $120 million project — called Beach 21st — transformed vacant city-owned land into a new, 100-percent affordable, mixed-use development project with 224 affordable homes near the Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue subway station. Supporting access to vital transit, daycare, and jobs, the building offers apartments affordable to New Yorkers earning between 40 and 80 percent of area median income, with 23 homes with on-site services reserved for New Yorkers who formerly experienced homelessness. The building includes on-site laundry, a fitness room, and a rooftop terrace with a walking track, as well as approximately 28,000 square feet of retail
and community space, including a day care center. Carried out by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC), in partnership with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), the $114 million infrastructure project was originally estimated to cost $139 million and require seven years, then promised to the community in three years, and now has been delivered three months ahead of the promised three-year schedule and $25 million under budget. The project includes critical street safety improvements, including the addition of more sidewalks, new landscaping, and green infrastructure. It also includes upgrades to 25 blocks of stormwater draining to help reduce the flooding risk from Continued on page 18

heavy rain. A new, 15,000-foot pedestrian plaza will offer community space maintained by DOT, the Rockaway East Merchants Association, and the Horticultural Society of New York for events, seating, greenery, bike racks, and a public restroom. In total, the work included: More than two miles of new storm sewers and 88 new catch basins to alleviate flooding; More than two miles of new curbs; 101,000 square feet of new sidewalks; 10,000 feet of existing sanitary sewers replaced with new pipes; 10,000 feet of aging water mains replaced with new pipes, and A net gain of 71 new trees for the neighborhood. The infrastructure project received the Award for Excellence in Design from the New York City Public Design Commission in 2017. DDC is also building the new Far Rockaway Library for Queens Public Library in the same com-
The Rockaway Times munity, which is anticipated to open next year. “Seven years ago, I convened the Downtown Far Rockaway Working Group to develop a $288 million roadmap for this community’s revitalization and reverse decades of deliberate disinvestment. I could not be more proud of the life-changing progress we are delivering for the families of this neighborhood in the form of housing, open space, education, and beyond — it truly is a new day for Far Rockaway, where its residents are finally being heard loud and clear,” Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. said. “The old Far Rockaway Shopping Center was an eyesore for over three decades, and the revitalization of this site and the surrounding area has been a board priority for almost 30 years,” said Jonathan Gaska, district manager, Community Board 14. “This project will be the economic engine to bring Downtown Far Rockaway back.” Photo from the NYC Mayor’s Office.
AMATO SAYS NO TO NEW SHELTER Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato expressed her apprehension for a new homeless shelter slated for 12-60 Brunswick Avenue in Far Rockaway and called for the project to be stopped due to the heavy saturation of supportive housing on the Peninsula. In her letter to Mayor Eric Adams, the Assemblywoman expressed the concerns of her constituents explaining that “throughout the Rockaway Peninsula, there are already 7 homeless shelters, 12 adult homes, 17 nursing homes and a copious amount of supportive housing. We have our fair share.” The Assemblywoman also pointed out that all of this is located in Flood Zone 1. Throughout the letter, written in late July, the Assemblywoman offered to work with the Mayor to provide an alternative to the homeless shelter with several community-based alternatives. The Assemblywoman recommended that the space could To advertise in The Rockaway Times call 718-634-3030 · ads@RockawayTimes.com
be better utilized as a Boys and Girls Club that could accommodate children, a business incubator or coworking space, or a multi-level parking facility. The Assemblywoman praised the Mayor’s vision that “everyone must be in the game,” and noted that there is a clear housing and homeless crisis. She expressed to the Mayor that “the Rockaway Peninsula has been a team player for decades. I am asking for there to be equitable distribution of shelters and supportive housing throughout all community boards in the five boroughs.” The Assemblywoman was referring to the reports that several community boards and districts do not even have one shelter. “I know the Mayor supports this community and I believe that he can help reverse the course from previous administrations that have disregarded the Rockaway Peninsula,” said Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato.

CREATIVITY Creating a theme, story, focus or sequence in a yoga class is a beautiful way to display who you are and tell your story. You will also reach people who may relate to your theme and feel comfort in knowing they are not alone. We often get stuck in our old ways or habits and forget how powerful we can become when we let things flow organically. My experience is limited and I have lots of room for growth but I am beginning to have the self-esteem and knowledge to know we all have the

power to help one another heal and feel really good about ourselves. It has taken me a lifetime to know who I am and truly believe in the Creator of all. When you wake up feeling blessed there is no space for doubt or negativity. A grateful heart creates a happy life of contentment. Acceptance is the ability to be in a place where you can abide with the ups and downs of life. If we constantly ask but why me, we will have feelings of discomfort. There is a place you can go and sit quietly,
with eyes closed, listening to the divine source. Don’t search but rather be exactly where you are. This practice is non-negotiable to help you get in touch with the profound teachings of your inner Source. It has been the guide all along and we can follow this enlightened path when we are ready. You can play out all the old stories in your head or you could begin to move on. Letting go of the past and allowing good things to come your way, is the path. And so, we begin again and again. Starting fresh with new ideas. Allowing good energy to flow in and saying Yes to all the possibilities that can arise when you crack open new ways of living your life. You have this one life to live, maybe there is life after but for now we are here with this life. May you choose to live with an open, loving heart. Forgiveness is a focus I may bring into class for the benefit of the student who cannot let go of the past. In my experience it is one of the most difficult things for one to be able to truly forgive in their heart and not hold a grudge. As we know, when Page 32
we forgive, we give ourselves permission to be free of suffering. We find compassion from a place within that promotes healing. The Metta meditation sends compassion to all beings to be happy, healthy and free from suffering. If you hold on to harmful judgements, it will block free flowing energy. I was blessed to witness forgiveness from my parents. Forgive and you will always find ease. “There is a place in the heart where everything meets. Go there if you want to find me. Mind, senses, soul, eternity, all are there. Are you there? Enter the bowl of vastness that is the heart. Give yourself to it with total abandon, listen to the song that is always resonating there. Quiet ecstasy is there- and a steady, regal sense of resting in a perfect spot. Once you know the way the nature of attention will call you to return, again and again, and be saturated with know, “I belong here, I am at home here.” From sutra 26 of The Radiance Sutras. May you find your own individual creativity and live from that source. THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2021

IT'S A CHEMICAL WORLD We live in a world full of chemicals. Contact with them is often difficult, if not impossible, to avoid. Some chemicals are endocrine disruptors. They interfere with the functioning of endocrine glands like the thyroid, pancreas, adrenals, ovaries, and testes. Some have been linked to birth defects and cancers, especially breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers. Here’s a list of the top 12 offenders: • Bisphenol A (BPA) - has been used in the manufacture of plastics and resins since the 1950s. Often substituted for with BPF or BPS, both of which are nearly as toxic. Found in plastic water bottles, food containers, inside coating of metal cans, and water supply lines. Use glass or metal bottles instead, avoid canned fruits and vegetables, and look for BPAfree labels. • Atrazine – used in herbicides and found in ground, surface, and drinking water. Usage banned in the EU since 2004, but still widely used here. Found in corn, sorghum, sugarcane, macadamia nuts, lawns, and by the sides of roads and railroad tracks. Buy organic fruits and vegetables and use a water filter certified to remove it. • Dioxins – produced by industrial wood and oil combustion. The EPA estimated that 90% of human exposure is through the intake of meat, dairy including milk, eggs, and butter, fish, and shellfish. Avoiding dioxins is challenging. • Phthalates – found in plastic

food containers, children’s toys, plastic wrap made of PVC, some personal care items, and anything with fragrance added. Use glass, fabric, or metal food containers, read labels on toys, avoid plastic wrap, and avoid products with added fragrances. Perchlorate – an oxidizer in rocket fuel, government data shows that it now contaminates most produce and milk supply. Found in explosives, flares, and fireworks. Use a reverse osmosis water filter. Arsenic – naturally occurring metal found in soil and groundwater. Highest levels can be found in seafood, rice, rice cereal, mushrooms, poultry, and fruit juices. Online maps show areas with the highest levels of arsenic. Use a good home water filter. Fire retardants known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) – very pervasive, found in carpets, furniture, children’s pajamas, automotive seat cushions, pillows, adhesives, and paints and varnishes. As much as possible, allow new carpets, furniture, and mattresses to remain outdoors to “off gas” before bringing them into the house. Check clothing labels and use a HEPA filter on your vacuum to cut down on toxic dust. Glycol ethers – organic solvents widely used in inks, dyes, paints, brake fluids, liquid soaps, cleaning products, cosmetics, sunscreens, and pharmaceuticals. Read labels, look for natural cleaning prod-
ucts and cosmetics. • Organophosphate pesticides – used as insecticides in agriculture, homes and gardens. Found in flea and tick collars, pet products, garden products, and fruits and vegetables. Buy organic and read labels. • Perfluorinated chemicals – they are everywhere and resistant to biodegradation. Will be around for many years despite three chemicals in this category being banned in 2016. Found in non-stick cookware, grease-resistant paper and cardboard, water and oil repellants, stain- or water-resistant clothing, and cleaning products. Avoid nonstick cookware, “stain” and “water-resistant” clothing, eat fresh foods and avoid processed and fast foods, and read labels. • Mercury – naturally occurring but neurotoxic metal released into the air and water mostly by burning coal. Found in practically all fish and shellfish. Larger fish that prey on smaller fish and are higher in the food chain contain the most mercury (tuna, sharks, swordfish, tilefish and king mackerel). Limit consumption of these larger fish and eat smaller fish like shrimp, sardines, salmon, and cod. Because it is toxic to the fetus, pregnant women should avoid seafood. • Lead – highly toxic to almost every organ system in the body. The most common source is exposure to house paints (lead-based paint was
banned in 1978). Also found in cosmetics, old water pipes, imported canned goods, and children’s toys, especially those made in China. Keep your home clean, be careful of crumbling paint, especially in older homes. Wash children’s hands often. Get a good home water filter, certified to remove lead. In older homes, run the cold water before using it and don’t use hot tap water for cooking or to make baby formula. You may wonder how these toxic substances still remain in our environment. There is no single answer to this. Some are naturally occurring substances that are impossible to ban, for example mercury and arsenic. Mercury and arsenic were byproducts from early manufacturing processes and were dumped into waterways. Back then, the extent of their toxicity was not known. Likewise lead, which was used in early water supply lines because of it’s ease of use. Its toxicity wasn’t known then. Other compounds remain key ingredients in some manufacturing processes and finding non-toxic replacements would be very expensive. Sadly, in other instances it’s just cheaper to continue using these substances. At any rate, the consumer needs to be aware of these issues and must take steps to protect his/her family from harm. This notice is being served as required by that rule. NYSCEF is designed for the electronic filing of documents with the court and for the electronic service of those documents, court documents, and court notices upon counsel and unrepresented litigants who have consented to electronic filing. Electronic filing offers significant benefits for attorneys and litigants, permitting papers to be filed with the court and served on other parties simply, conveniently, and quickly. NYSCEF case documents are filed with the court by filing on the NYSCEF Website, which can be done at any time of the day or night on any day of the week. The documents are served automatically on all consenting e-filers as soon as the document is uploaded to the website, which sends out an immediate email notification of the filing. The NYSCEF System charges no fees for filing, serving, or viewing the electronic case record, nor does it charge any fees to print any filed documents. Normal filing fees must be paid, but this can be done on-line. Parties represented by an attorney: Counsel for parties served with this notice must either: 1) immediately record their representation within the e-filed proceeding on the NYSCEF site; or 2) file the Notice of Opt-Out form with the clerk of the court

Exemptions from mandatory e-filing are limited to attorneys who certify in good faith that they lack the computer hardware and/or scanner and/or internet connection or that they lack (along with all employees subject to their direction) the operational knowledge to comply with e-filing requirements. [Section 207.4-aa(e)] Parties not represented by an attorney: Unrepresented litigants are exempt from e-filing. They can serve and file documents in paper form and must be served with documents in paper form. However, an unrepresented litigant may participate in e-filing. For information on how to participate in e-filing, unrepresented litigants should contact the appropriate clerk in the court where the proceeding was filed or visit www.nycourts.gov/efile-unrepresented. Unrepresented litigants also are encouraged to visit www.nycourthelp.gov or contact the Help Center in the court where the proceeding was filed. An unrepresented litigant who consents to e-filing may cease participation at any time. However, the other parties may continue to e-file their court documents in the proceeding. Colorful Carol Dear Enchantress, Help! I love dressing wild, I love colors and I love to play with costume pieces for no good reason at all. I have a very traditional Irish family, and I grew up in this local town, and I know people call me crazy all the time. They joke about it in front of me, and they whisper about me. I don't really care, but also it bothers me. I am young, I'm under 30, and I know I'm more emotionally aware than most kids my age. So I can "get over" that people talk about
me. But also, I feel annoyed and mad that people are so limited! UGH. How can I really not care about what people are saying? I don't let myself get affected when I actually get dressed, but I feel squirmy when I first show up, or when people take loud pokes at me. What should I do? Dear Colorful Carol, We need more people like you! I recently watched a video of how slowly color is actually NOT happening in our culture. Our cars are black, white or grey, brand-
ing has gotten simple and black on white, and even McDonalds is now brown and is not the red and yellow as we knew it! BRING on your self expression, keep the color, and simply said, make new friends! Have yourself adventures where others are also excited about color. It seems that you know that this is a bigger issue than just wearing color. The people around you live in a small and limited world, they have a choice, and they are choosing to stay the SAME. That is a safety the ego creates, and a coping mechanism. When a person is made to be "othered," the coping creates a small container of no change, which feels "safe" but is actually full of lack and contraction, in other words not being alive. I judge limited people, (I am human.) I don't make it mean to much or spend too much time thinking about it or them. It's ok to have different friend groups, if you feel loyal to your local people, you will feel more
The Rockaway Times compassion for them, once you have your colorful friends to spend time with on other days. How to start making colorful friends? Find a Facebook event that has dance involved and shows images of colorfully dressed people, then go. DO NOT bring a friend for security, get yourself to show up with just yourself. That alone is a great adventure, breaking through to the other side requires you to take a risk! GOOD FOR YOU! Celebrate! Enjoy! To get in touch with Shane email her at love@enchantedembodiment.com

Rockaway Sand Sistas Sweep 12U Podium at Qualifier The Sand Sistas of Rockaway have been training hard and training smart since the beginning of May. The program is the “Sand Annex” to Marie Raico and staff ’s Metro Volleyball - soon to be Rockawave Training Academy - which will kick off their indoor work this late/winter at Aviator Sports Complex. The Sand Season started with the Sugar Bowl tournament and continued with individual tournaments throughout the beach in July. The program took their show on the road in Long Beach, LI this past weekend to compete on The Little Big Shots Junior AVP Regional Qualifying event. While many girls from various age groups put forth great efforts in their pool play and play-
off rounds, the girls in the 12 U Division swept the podium and took home four team bids to Nationals that will take place in Clearwater, FL and Huntington Beach, CA in November. First place went to Team Ostrander (Chloe)/ Courtney (Dylan); Second Place to Team Turchiano (Kelsey) /Hayden (Caroline) and Third Place bids were handed to

Team Ferriola (Ashley)/ Casares (Callie) and Team Tubridy (Rosemarie)/Henry (Vanessa) no photo available). Coach Raico is tremendously proud of all the girls who competed in all of the age bracket (12u, 14u, 16u). “We are a family of ‘Sistas’ who love this game and want to push each other to be the best version of ourselves inside and outside the lines! It is a true gift to work with these talented and driven young ladies. Our motto is to be good at volleyball and great at life. The way these girls are growing in their love of this sport and each other is the great victory here, the medals and bids are a rewarding bonus!” The future of volleyball in Rockaway and Breezy Point looks
very bright! If you are interested in training for beach competition and catching the “Rockawave” playing indoor volleyball feel free to email Marie Raico at Mcgoldrickathleticconsulting@ aol.com.

Wrestle Talk
NEWS UPDATE & WRESTLING RETURNS TO ROCKAWAY! By Eric Jayden
Welcome fans to another edition of Wrestle Talk! We start off with news from the WWE, as it has been reported that Sasha Banks and Naomi have both agreed to return to the WWE. Both Sasha and Naomi have not been back or have appeared on TV since they both left on May 16, 2022 from a WWE RAW taping. As per Dave Meltzer, the talk at WWE is that Sasha and Naomi were in agreement to re-sign contracts and could be appearing back on TV anytime soon. Their return can be mainly attributed to the return of Triple HHH, as he is now in charge of Creative for the WWE. Fans on Social Media have been going crazy about this news and we
will keep you updated as more information comes in! Staying on the WWE, we have heard of possible reports, that Roman Reigns may be facing the The Rock as a Dream Match at WrestleMania 39, at the SoFi Stadium in California scheduled for April of 2023. Currently, Roman Reigns is the WWE Universal Champion and Paul Heyman has recently added speculation that a Rock vs Reigns match will happen because Roman would allow the Rock to challenge him for the championship. This indeed will be a match you will not want to miss! So, the Question of the Week, is a question I get sent to me every week from you, the fans! So, I'm happy to announce that on Friday Night, August 19, pro wres-
tling returns back to the Rockaways! As, Outlaw Wrestling will be hosting a live event at St. Camillus School located at 185 Beach 99th Street in Rockaway Park! Currently, scheduled to appear are former WWE Superstar Scotty 2 Hotty, NWA World Jr Heavyweight Champion Homicide, WCW Legend Kevin Sullivan, Rich Swann and many more! Tickets for this live show are now available on Eventbrite. com
