Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest Was the Biggest Yet! Lana’s Loft, Avoid the Day Popup Bookstore, Far Rock Shop, CROM, Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach, Mazzone Hardware, Zingara Vintage and American Princess Cruises, for donating some amazing swag, items, gift certificates and giftcards. Because of them, for the first time, The Rockaway Times was able to have runners up and give prizes to not only our first, second and third place winners, but to fourth place winners as well. Please be sure to frequent and thank these businesses for helping to make the contest even more fun. And now on to the winners! This year our judges, The Martin, Hayden and Butler girls won First in the 9-15 category including Liam Kavanagh, First Deputy Commissioner at NYC Parks, Alex Zablocki, Executive Director of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and Rockaway Times freelance reporter, Nicole Taylor-Lang, had the tough job of picking our winners. The competition was stiff but only 12 were recognized as top sand masters. The contest featured three age categories: 8 and Under, 9-15 and 16 and Up, and there were first through fourth place winners in each. In the 8 and Under category, First Place was an interactive “7-11 Ball Game” created by Ellen Nichtern, Lauren Hayden, Taryn and Hayden Martin and Maggie Butler. Sandcastles may not last forever, but memories do and we hope everyone that came out for the 3rd Annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest left with a new memory of a beautiful, fun day with plenty of creative sand sculptures. With 41 participating groups this year, this was our biggest sandcastle contest yet! Sunday, July 29 was a gorgeous day for the beach and many chose to spend their day on Beach 117th, making creations out of sand for the chance to win bragging rights and some amazing prizes. For the third year in a row, The Rockaway Times sponsored the Rockaway Sandcastle Contest, along with the help of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and Councilman Eric Ulrich's office. Sunday’s event proved that it’s getting bigger and better with 41 participating groups or individuals and plenty of prizes donated by local businesses. This year’s contest presented two good problems. As last year’s contest only had 26 groups, we only prepared 30 spaces in the contest area. However, participants kept on arriving, wanting to get in on the fun this year, so some had to work outside of the contest area. The second good problem was the overwhelming generosity of local businesses that donated prizes towards the prize pool for this year’s contest. A huge thanks goes to Uncle Louie G of Rockaway Beach, Carvel, Coastal Frozen Yogurt, Fat Cardinal Bakery,

Christine, Harmony, Sage and Clover McFarlane paid homage to Rockaway’s Playland with a sculpture of the icon Playland clown. Last but not least, Thomas Sullivan showed he’s proud to be an American with an American flag in the sand. Although there were 12 top winners, almost everyone went home with something. Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to everyone that came out to participate in the contest and to check out the creations. A special thanks goes out to NYC Parks Rockaway Administrator Portia Dyrenforth for helping make this contest possible. We’re sad to report that this will be her last sandcastle contest, as she is moving on to a new NYC Parks position and will no longer be Rockaway’s Administrator. Thank you for everything, Portia! The next administrator will have some big shoes to fill and we look forward to working with them on next year’s sandcastle contest!

Golden Age of Rockaway By John Sica
Rockaway life is amazing. Sometimes we take it for granted because, after all, to us it’s just life. But if you work outside of Rockaway and talk to your coworkers, you would realize how special a place it is that we live in. I drive people working in the television and movie business for a living. Our Monday morning conversations always begin with the question I have become embarrassed to answer. It's an embarrassment of riches. “How was your weekend?” Passenger One, “Good, I got the laundry caught up on Saturday, and had a barbecue on Sunday. Passenger Two, “I didn’t do anything. How was your weekend John?” Me, “Got home Friday and drove my Solowheel hoverboard to the 106th concession stand where The BEasy Band was playing. Ran into a
dozen friends, ate an arepa, and listened to an 11-piece jazz rock band.” Passenger One, “But wasn’t there a storm Friday night?” Me, “That was the best part. We saw the storm rolling in from the bay, lightning, thunder, incredible winds. The band packed up just before the torrential downpour. As the rain hit, flying sideways towards the ocean, the crowd and the band ran for cover inside the concession stand. Most of the metal gates were pulled down, a few were left open to watch the storm. One saxophone player started to play in the corner. Then the stand-up base player joined in. Then another sax, a flute, a banjo, guitar, singer. A spontaneous jam broke loose with the storm raging outside and all of us packed in dancing and drinking. Passenger Two, “Wow great night.” Me, “It wasn’t over, when
the storm subsided, we headed to Uma's for dinner and there was a great jazz band there.” As all you Rockaway residents know, there were probably 10 other bands playing in 10 other bars in Rockaway and if I wasn’t such a lightweight, the party could have continued. Passenger One, “Great weekend.” Me, “No that was Friday. Saturday, some coffee and croissants from Roasters on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and it was off to the beach. The ocean was beautiful, waves rideable, temperature perfect and water clean. Nutcrackers were for sale on the beach, if you don’t know what they are you are probably better off. Friends and family showed up and eventually we all headed up to my oceanfront apartment for showers, drinks and watching the surfers and skateboarders below. Then it was
time for dinner at Whit’s for some fine dining in his backyard oasis with more live music.” Once again the night was young and the party continued all across Rockaway into the next morning. Of course, not for me, the lightweight. Passenger Two, “Great weekend.” Me, “I didn’t tell you about Sunday yet. Wanted to sleep late but my phone was ringing at 8:30 a.m. I knew it was about a softball doubleheader I was supposed to play in but I blew it off. I decided to make my wife breakfast. Just as the bacon and hash browns were ready, at 9:20 a.m. the phone rang again from another teammate. I knew what it was about and didn’t want to answer but that second call, I knew I had to answer. My softball team was shorthanded and needed me to play or forfeit. Continued on page 13

***** Vote for your favorite photos this weekend. The Rockaway Times Photo Contest has 30 finalists. The amazing shots have been on display on the boardwalk and the ferry landing since Memorial Day. This weekend, the field will be narrowed to 15 finalists. On Saturday, voting will take place at three locations. On Sunday at two. See Page 8 for details. ***** The 100th Precinct tweeted a Vision Zero notice. We’re hearing that there will be enhanced enforcement of traffic laws for the next couple of weeks. ***** Man, this stinks for Rockaway. Portia Dyrenforth, the Parks Administrator for Rockaway, will be moving on in mid-September to an “opportunity she couldn’t pass up.” She’s been
here for three years and loves Rockaway (even though we’re sure she heard her fair share of crap). She was responsive, gungho on beach activities (especially helping with our Photo Contest and Sandcastle Contest), and just generally nice. We have our fingers crossed that her replacement is nearly as good. ***** As we were going to press on Wednesday, we received a message from the 100th Precinct saying an 88-year-old man was stuck by a vehicle making an illegal U-Turn at Rockaway Beach Blvd. and Beach 116th Street. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Our thoughts are with him. ***** The Tarzan Boat at Thai Rock is for sale. It’s a wild and fun attraction but it attracts lawsuits and high insurance premiums, too. ***** There was a report of a big oil spill in Vernam Basin, around Beach 73rd Street and Thursby Avenue on Monday. There are a lot of sunken barges and cranes in those waters. A crane fell into the
water right off Amstel Boulevard a few years back and it’s still there. For all the cleanup work being done in Jamaica Bay this area remains a potential hazard. ***** The U.S. mail delivery in Rockaway stinks. We’ve heard from people who mailed checks at the Rockaway Park office and it took eight days for the mail to be delivered, locally. (We tested that out. We’re literally across the street from the Post Office. We mailed a letter to ourselves on Thursday morning and got it Monday. Is that good? By Rockaway standards, yes). We’ve heard people have had their credit scores dinged because their checks to credit card companies were lost. Contact Congressman Meeks to complain. ***** Reunion news: SFDS Class of 1978 - 40th Reunion is Saturday, September 22 at Belle Harbor Yacht Club, 6 to 10 p.m. ($80 per person). Guests welcome! Contact Mary Ellen Blum Olsen at 917-603-8008 or visit the Facebook page - SFDS Class of 1978 - 40th Reunion.

***** More reunion news: Nazareth - St. Brendan's Class of ‘73 reunion will be at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Saturday, September 15 from 7-11 p.m. For ticket information contact Michael DiFede, Mdifede@aol. com. ***** A lot of dockless bikes are now electric. Yes, we’ve heard there are some careless riders (i.e. speeders) but this innovation is likely here to stay. Similar eBikes and scooter-sharing businesses are sprouting up all over the city. The City does what it can to make driving a miserable experience while promoting all sorts of bike use. ***** As far as the Rockaway bikes go, it’s been reported that Pace and Lime had more than 3,000 rentals the first two weeks. Sometimes the bikes are left in front of people’s homes or at other places they shouldn’t be. Call the companies to have them removed: Pace (white bikes) 1-833-321-PACE and the number for Lime is 1-888-LIME-345.

PHOTO CONTEST VOTING SATURDAY AND SUNDAY You love them. Your friends love them. Now show your love by voting for your favorites in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. After a first round of judging was held in April, 30 photos were selected to make it to the next round. Those chosen photos also had the high honor of being enlarged to poster-size and put on display on the boardwalk and at the Beach 108th Street ferry landing. (Thanks to the generous contributions of the Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC), the Parks Department, and NYC Ferry-Hornblower, we were able to enlarge and hang an additional dozen that didn’t make it to the next round but were fabulous nonetheless). This weekend the field will be narrowed to a Top 15 by way of popular vote.
On Saturday, August 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. contest organizer, John Cori, will make the rounds and provide voters with stickers to affix to their favorites. From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., John will be on the boardwalk at Beach 116th Street, so if you want to choose among those wonderful shots, you’ve got to be there then. From approximately 11 a.m. to noon, John will be at the ferry landing giving out those voting stickers. The ferry photos are placed on the railing just outside the dock ramp. Saturday voting continues from approximately noon to 1 p.m. at Beach 98th Street on the boardwalk. Sunday voting is from 10 a.m. to noon. The first hour of voting will be at Beach 67th Street and the second hour (11 a.m. to

noon.) will take place at Beach 56th Street. Photos at Beach 32nd, Beach 19th, and in Broad Channel are not contest finalists so there won’t be voting for these photos (though they’re amazing!). The Final 15 will be on display
at Caracas, the Beach 106th concession, on Sunday, August 12. A reception and final judging will start at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Congratulations to all participants. You made Rockaway more beautiful!

Take a Nostalgia Ride Back to Rockaway By Katie McFadden
Want to ride in a time machine? Saturday’s your chance. Or at least an opportunity to feel like you’re going back in time on a vintage 1930s train. On Saturday, August 4, the New York City Transit Museum (NYTM) is hosting Nostalgia Ride to Rockaway, giving passengers a chance to take the trip to the beach on a piece of history. Grab your ticket and head to the New York Transit Museum (99 Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn) on Saturday and ride back to Rockaway in style on board a vintage train that was first put into service in 1932. For some, it may bring back memories as these trains were serving riders until as late as 1977. For others, riding the old train will feel like a brand new experience (although some may question the age of the current A Trains in service). However there’s no doubt this old train will make some do a double take as they see it chugging along the A line from Brooklyn’s Court Street station to Beach 116th Street. And some lucky riders will get to experience it on board. As riders board at the Court Street station, they’ll be thrown back in time as they ride a R1/9 train car with rattan seats, paddle ceiling fans (installed before the age of air conditioning), incandescent light bulbs, roll signs, and period advertisements– all pre-WWII subway staples. Guests can sit on the seats, hold onto the handrails, read the vintage advertisements, and travel through time to the early days of the New York subway system. Also on this Saturday’s Rockaway-bound ride, passengers will be treated to the sounds of Cait and the Critters, a New York City-based jazz band that plays traditional and western swing, something you don’t normally hear when someone shouts, “Showtime!” on current-day A trains. There will be NYTM staff and a knowledgeable train crew on board on Saturday to answer questions and explain some of the history of these rideable relics. And the history sure is fascinating. The train being used

on Saturday is a vintage 1930s R1/9 train. According to Newburg, “These cars, in service from 1932 to 1977 and preserved by the Transit Museum, were ordered for the Independent Subway System (IND) and are commonly known by their contract numbers. The cars were modern for their time, fitting in very well with the IND’s Depression-era Art Deco aesthetic, and each could hold nearly 300 passengers.” It won’t be the train’s first time riding on the A line. In fact it was among the first trains to operate on Rockaway’s tracks and these train cars even inspired Billy Strayhorn’s jazz hit, “Take the A Train.” After the first R1s went into service as part of the new IND system, more than a thousand nearly identical subway cars were delivered between 1930 and 1940 under the designations R1, R4, R6, R7 and R9. Their ceiling fans, padded seats, and incandescent light bulbs

were state-of-the-art when these cars were first placed in service. On Saturday, riders will get to see it all for themselves as part of the Rockaway Nostalgia Ride. Nostalgia Rides have been a feature of the NYTM since it opened in 1976 as part of the country’s bicentennial celebrations. “One of the Transit Museum’s most treasured traditions, Nostalgia Rides often reflect a time before automated voice announcements, air conditioning or bright fluorescent lighting,” New York Transit Museum spokesperson Chelsea Newburg, said. “Nostalgia Rides transport straphangers, to another age, using the same equipment that city dwellers would have ridden decades ago. As a collecting institution and repository of public transportation history in the New York metropolitan region, we feel strongly about empowering children and adults of all ages to explore our city’s fascinating
transit system and complex history. Nostalgia Rides are a wonderful opportunity for families and commuters to interact with the transit system in a unique environment, learn about its storied history, and discover why it is and always has been such a vital part of New York City.” According to Newburg, Nostalgia Rides are held “throughout the year, providing the chance to experience New York transportation history firsthand while en route to some of the City’s greatest attractions. Recently, our vintage trains have journeyed to Brighton Beach, Coney Island, the Green-Wood and Woodlawn Cemeteries, Van Cortlandt Park, Citi Field and Yankee Stadium for special Mets and Yankees games, and have even transported commuters in regular service during the holiday season.” On Saturday, the destination will be the beach. After riding the train to Rockaway’s Beach 116th station, they’ll have some time to explore before getting back on for the return trip at 4 p.m., which will make some stops along the A Line in Brooklyn and Manhattan. However guests are also welcome to stay in Rockaway and find their own way home. Some who miss the Nostalgia Ride may be able to see the vintage train pass by along the A line, and R1/9 and more than 20 other vintage trains are always on display at the museum and open for guests to take a look inside. Tickets for the Nostalgia Ride are still up for grabs, but must be purchased before 4 p.m. on Friday, August 3. There will be no opportunity to purchase tickets on the day of the event. Regular tickets are $50 for adults, $25 for children and $35 for New York Transit Museum members, but for Rockaway Times readers, NYTM was kind enough to offer a special Promo Code for 20 percent off tickets. To purchase tickets, head to nytransitmuseum. org/rockaways and use the Promo Code RTIMES20 at checkout to apply the discount. Nostalgia Ride ticket holders should arrive at the New York Transit Museum in Downtown Brooklyn by 10:30 a.m. for the 11 a.m. departure. All aboard!

Coming in from the bright sunlight, I couldn’t see anything at all. A lovely waitress seeing my plight, took me by her hand and escorted me to a table, read the menu to me and took my order. The food was delicious, the staff super friendly and accommodating, even Jimmy, the owner, came out to greet me. Sheila, the waitress, asked me how I was getting home, the Q35 I responded. She escorted me to the door then insisted she take me safely across 116th Street where I could board the Q35. This heartwarming experience made me think again how lucky I am to live in Rockaway where we are all in a family of neighbors and friends who genuinely care and support each other. Thank you Sheila and the staff of Belle Harbor Steak House. Jose Fernandez
Heartwarming Dear Editor: I am an 88-year-young Rockawayite dealing with failing eyesight due to glaucoma. I had some urgent business to attend to last Thursday on Beach 116th Street with Mirkin Vision for new glasses, and banking with Chase. I had no one to accompany me, so I decided to go it alone on the Q35 bus and walk to my destination without having to cross any streets. live in Florida but spend summers in Rockaway, so Ella’s regular veterinarian is down south. When it suddenly became evident that the time to put her down was now, we took her to the Animal Hospital of the Rockaways on Beach Channel Drive. To say that they were wonderful is an understatement. Compassionate and sympathetic care for her (and us) was evident from the minute we walked into the office. It was so comforting to know that in her last few minutes she was surrounded by people who, although they never met her before, took such careful care of her and made those minutes as comfortable as possible. In addition to the care at the time, a few weeks later we received a sympathy card, signed by everyone in the office. Each member of the staff wrote a little note, which touched us so much. Rockawayites are lucky to have such a wonderful and caring facility in the neighborhood, and we thank them immensely. Betsy Lograno
In An Ideal City… Dear Editor: Rick Horan questions why the NYC government is involved in bike sharing programs. I think this relates to a discussion our city (and our country) needs to have more openly: What role should government play in our lives? Is the government that governs best the one that governs least, or should the government be active in trying to improve its citizens’ lives? Personally, I do not mind my taxpayer money going towards bike-sharing programs that, if administered properly (and I totally understand how big an "if" this is in this crazy corrupt city), offer residents and visitors a healthy and environmentally safe way of transportation. I do mind my taxpayer money going towards destroying Rockaway thoroughfares where the bikes can no longer coexist with motor vehicles, an issue which I know Mr. Horan is actively engaged in. The government should not be viewed as anathema to its citizens, despite its best efforts to be just that. Dylan Watton

Tuesday, August 7 is National Night Out! There will be plenty of fun to go around as both the 100th and 101st Precinct will be holding their own events that aim to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer. For 35 years, National Night Out events, formerly known as National Night Out Against Crime, have taken place across the country. On Tuesday, both of Rockaway’s local precincts will be participating in evenings full of games, activities, resources and more. For the 100th Precinct’s National Night Out event, head to the Beach 94th Street parking lot between Rockaway Beach Blvd. and Shore Front Parkway from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. This fun family night will include an inflatable obstacle course and other bouncy rides donated by Call-A-Head, a DJ, cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones, ices from Uncle Louie G of Rockaway Beach, face painting, balloon animals, a photo booth, free food, dance performances by Millennium and JUMP Dance, Zumba with Lisa G, plus resource tables from the New York State Police, Catholic Charities, St. Camillus, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and more. Before the fun starts, the night will kick off with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by a ceremony to honor and name the fallen police officers across the country. “We honor everyone across the country because this is National Night Out,” 100th Precinct Community Council President Joe Young said. Young says last year’s turnout was good, but is hoping for even more locals to come out and celebrate this great event. “National Night Out is a time to
take your neighborhood back. It’s a night for more people to get out and on the streets instead of letting criminals roam the streets,” Young said. The 101st Precinct will also be hosting a National Night Out event on Tuesday. From 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., head down to Beach 17th Street and the boardwalk for a night of food, DJ music, and plenty of fun stuff from Lulu’s Party Rentals, sponsored by Queens Law Associates, including a bounce house, face painting, snow cones, a character performance and more. There may also be a basketball contest, so brush up on your skills on the court. This event will also include plenty of resource and information tables presented by the Mayor's office of Immigrant Affairs, NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene, Zumba Fitness , NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Sanitation, NYC Department of Finance, Queens Law Associates, Applebee's, Queens Library, New York City Councilman Donovan Richards, The Child Center of New York and others. No matter where you go, head out for Night Out and celebrate with your neighbors and local police precincts.

GOLDEN AGE OF ROCKAWAY
Continued from Page 5
That’s why my team’s name is The No Shows. So, a softball doubleheader (sweep) started my Sunday. Next I took the Solowheel to my mechanic to pick up my wife’s repaired car. I had a few beers with my mechanic, Pete, and then I headed uptown on my Solowheel passing the sandcastle building contest, which I was tempted to stop at. But I decided to resist temptation and continued to the beach where a dozen friends were listening to music, swimming, and floating the rubber raft known simply as “The Barge” out to sea beyond the breaking waves. I was invited to two barbecues, but turned them down. I solowheeled home and passed a band playing on the boardwalk at Caracas, and then another band playing at Low Tide on the boardwalk. After dinner, my wife, Rita and I thought about taking a walk on the boardwalk to Rippers
THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2018 to see what band was playing there. But I had had enough. I was now ready to close the book on the weekend. Besides, I forgot DJ Mouse was spinning music at Bungalow Bar.” That story played out with a thousand different Rockaway residents, each with their own combinations of bands, bars, food, beaches, etc., that makes up life in Rockaway. Every weekend. Oh yeah, and weekdays too. Bands everywhere during the week, Wednesday night volleyball, Tuesday night open mic at Connolly’s, Thursday music at Bungalow, etc. So my story goes, every Monday morning. I start to wonder if people think that I am making this stuff up. It is the golden age of Rockaway! To see a video of the Friday night storm jam session, go to Facebook group Rockaway Music. If you are a band or bar, post any upcoming music events on that page as well as pictures and videos from events.

Klaus Heading West
Klaus Biesenbach is heading west. The Rockaway resident has been recruited to run the Museum of Contemporar y Art (MoC A) in Los Angeles after being the chief curator at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and PS1 in New
York for years. He bought a house in Rockaway just a few months before Sandy in 2012 and then helped recover y efforts, which included bringing the dome that was set up on Beach 95th as a temporary community center. In 2014, he brought Rockaway! the music and arts festival to Fort Tilden and has been a champion of resiliency efforts. Klaus, a world traveler, born in West Germany, fell in love with Rockaway on a chance visit. He eventually bought a house on Beach 86th Street and came home as often as work allowed. Although some rich and famous might appear at his impromptu barbecues, he made certain to invite his many Rockaway friends. Oh, and he wore a Rockaway Times t-shirt until it was worn out! Best of luck, Klaus! We know you’ll be back.

Sink Your Teeth Into National Sandwich Month! By Kami Leigh-Agard
August is National Sandwich Month, and according to Sandwich America, Americans eat a whopping 300 million sandwiches a day. So what better month to pay homage to the best food — layered, stuffed, and stacked between two slices of bread — than in August, when it’s too hot to cook, thus getting a scrumptiously satisfying sandwich is the best way to go. The Rockaway Times had the daunting task of picking six local eateries offering an eclectic array of locals’ favorite sandwiches. If your favorite spot was not included, please note the peninsula and Broad Channel has so many options, we would need to write a book to highlight them all!
Last Stop’s Eggs Benedict a sinful delight. The eggs are delicately poached, served with Canadian bacon, and a bright, creamy hollandaise sauce on top of a toasted English muffin. Just looking at this sandwich, your mouth will start to water. However, if you are craving a cold sandwich, their Triple Decker Turkey Club served with lettuce, tomato, bacon, American cheese and mayonnaise on toasted white bread, and Boars Head turkey, will stretch your eyes and appetite to the max. 222 Beach 116th Street / 718945-6450 Open everyday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2018 Boardwalk Bagel & Delicatessen Every time you walk into Boardwalk Bagel — whether morning, noon or night, it’s always swarming with customers, and rightfully so — because their food is the bomb! It was challenging to narrow down two of their best sandwiches, so we got some help from the owner, Danny Foster. First up, The Surf. This hero will have you riding through a wave of hot chicken cutlet, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella cheese seasoned with housemade balsamic mayonnaise, all topped on aromatic garlic bread. Yummm! Looking for an aphrodisiac? Try their Eggplant Wrap, served on either a white or wheat wrap, stuffed with sliced eggplant, fresh mesclun greens, roasted red peppers, fresh mozzarella, drizzled with homemade balsamic vinaigrette. Absolute perfection! 108-01 Beach 108th Street / 718-634-2300 Mon. to Sun., 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sam’s Food Castle On the go, and looking for tasty halal food or all-American thoroughfare food? Well, look no further than Sam’s. Their steamy falafel, chicken and lamb gyros stuffed in a pita with lettuce and tomato, topped with their addictive white sauce are absolutely scrumptious, and don’t be surprised if you end up or-
Their thickly-sliced smoked Polish kielbasa served on a graham roll, fresh from the oven and slathered with mustard, topped with sour pickles, is pure Nirvana! Also, their “typical American hero was anything but typical. The hero, also freshly-baked, topped with polish swiss cheese, house ham, fresh tomato and lettuce, sprinkled with scallions was not just a belly-full, but a brain-full as this sandwich will haunt your dreams, taunting you to get more! Kopernik is definitely going to be a neighborhood staple. 115-07 Rockaway Beach Blvd / 718-945-5050

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Stone Age It is estimated that between 10 to 15 percent of the adult U.S. population has gallstones. Most cases are asymptomatic, as gallstones are usually discovered incidentally during routine imaging for other abdominal conditions. Only about 20 percent of those with gallstones ever develop clinically significant complications. Be that as it may, gallstones account for significant healthcare costs. In 2004, the average inpatient cost for any gallstone-related disease was $11,584, with an overall annual cost of $6.2 billon. Gallstones are classified into two main categories based on
their predominant chemical composition: cholesterol or pigment. About 75 percent of gallstones are composed of cholesterol. There are multiple risk factors for the development of gallstones. These include age above 40, female sex (women of reproductive age are four times more likely to develop gallstones than men, although this risk evens out after menopause), ethnicity (highest in Mexican and Native Americans), rapid weight loss (especially after weight-loss or bariatric surgery), chronic blood disorders that cause hemolysis (the breakdown or rupturing of red blood
cells), obesity, and diabetes. Most patients with gallstones never experience symptoms. In those who have symptoms, the most common one is abdominal pain. The pain is usually intermittent and occurs in the right upper abdomen. There may be pain in the upper mid-abdomen, back, and right shoulder. The pain is caused by distension of the gallbladder because a stone is blocking the cystic duct. In response to a meal, the gallbladder contracts and pushes bile out via the cystic duct into the common bile duct and intestines. Pain an hour or so after a meal or in the late evening or night is strongly suggestive of gallstones. Annually, about one to three percent of those with gallstones experience a complication. Complications can include cholecystitis (acute gallbladder inflammation), choledocolithiasis (common bile duct stone), cholangitis (gallbladder infection), and pancreatitis. A sonogram is usually the test of choice to diagnose gallstones. Other tests can be used as the clinical situation warrants. The stand-
The Rockaway Times ard treatment of asymptomatic gallstones is watch and wait. Studies have shown that those with asymptomatic gallstones have about a seven to 26 percent lifetime risk of developing complications. Surgery to remove asymptomatic gallstones is not recommended, except in certain situations. These situations include those with hemolytic anemias (i.e. sickle cell disease) and patients who are Native Americans. Calcification of the gallbladder wall can occur (“porcelain gallbladder”). This occurrence was, but no longer is, an indication to remove the gallbladder. Also, removal of the gallbladder was routinely performed during bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, but that is no longer the case. For those who have gallstone symptoms or complications, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the procedure of choice. In general, laparoscopic surgery has a shorter recovery time and patients spend less time hospitalized. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS This past week on a long work flight, I sat next to a young man from Colombia who is 21 years old and studying civil engineering. During the flight, his story and his family’s story unfolded. I was amazed at his determination and courage. His father is a lawyer - but they are poor. People don’t have money to pay him. We talked about food and how he misses his spicy home food. Typical meal for them: soup with a lot of ingredients. The young man was on his way to Sydney, Australia. He went to D.C. for three weeks, stayed with friends, some kind of study
there, and then flew with me to Honolulu, with a next day flight to Sydney. In D.C., the family took him shopping to buy clothes for his trip. He had on everything new. He told me he got a haircut in D.C. and was surprised at the cost: $17. In his country, it is $3. We landed in Honolulu (after a 3-hour delay landing in L.A.) at around 6:30 p.m. His flight was the following day at 1 p.m. He was going to stay in the airport. His family took a credit line (how they get it, I don’t know) for $7,000 for the oneyear course in Sydney. He had
enough money for about a week and said he would get a job doing anything: cleaning, restaurant work, whatever, to afford the $220 per week for a room and then money to eat. His English wasn’t great, but we made ourselves understood with some Italian on my part some words are similar. He was navigating airports, not understanding English, using Google Translate. I was amazed by his courage. He talked about the lack of opportunity in his country to work and make money. And his plans for the future included working somewhere out there in the world as a civil engineer and then bringing his family. For the snack on the flight, it was a sandwich with cheese and vegetables. He tried several bites, but kept on telling me, this is bad, I don’t like vegetables and was trying to swallow! He then put it in the wrapper and said he was sorry multiple times, but he couldn’t eat it. That he knows there are people in the world who have no food, but he could not eat it.
Page 25 He told me that his mom and grandma would like me and that I reminded him of them. He said they cried and cried when he left and when they Facetime they all cry. He knows that he has to be the one to forge ahead, go to school for the future, work now and send money home. I admired his determination; I was sad for his predicament. Returning home on the long flight, I observed couples and families of four and five, coming back from holiday. They had many bags, many snacks, etc. - the privilege of being able to take a vacation is something that young man maybe never have thought about. I know everything is relative. We are born where we are born, into a family wherever in the world and it is up to us to make sense of it all and make life meaningful somehow. I came home and counted my blessings—one by one. May you be happy. May you be free. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

From the NPS KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE SKY FOR SUMMERTIME NEIGHBORS By Heather Kramer
Jamaica Bay is a popular respite for many migrating birds to lay their eggs and raise their young. The bay’s brackish waters are rich with food and refuge, and provide ample habitat for our summertime neighbors. One in particular has made an excellent come back over the years—the osprey. If you’re not watching closely, you just may miss them; while relaxing on the beach, staring out at the Atlantic horizon, or commuting across the bridge, this very special sea-hawk will surprise you with a feet-first splash. When seen from below, ospreys are often said to make an “M” shape, as they fly with a distinct kink in their wings. The bird’s back and wings are brown, which contrast with its white underparts and long pale legs. A distinguishing feature of the osprey is the brown line
behind the eye. This adaptation helps aid it while it hunts, helping to decrease the glare from the water’s surface as it searches for food. And considering that 99 percent of the osprey’s diet is fish, this stripe is essential. If you have your heart set on seeing one of these birds, you may have better beginner’s luck looking for one of their nests. Osprey nests are large and in open areas, usually within sight of water. They construct these nests out of sticks, and add to them each year when they return from migration. These nests can be found on platforms especially built for the birds, dead trees, and on an occasional unused crane. Some may notice the one along Cross Bay Boulevard, not far from the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. After generations of adding to the nest year after year, ospreys can end up with nests 10–13 feet

deep and 3–6 feet in diameter— easily big enough for a human to sit in. Around this time of year, you may find Chris Nadareski, a research scientist from the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and Don Riepe, Director of the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society, leading bird-banding expeditions around these nests. The tagging occurs before the
young have fledged (about 5 ½- 6 weeks old), and are gingerly cradled by Nadereski, who places two bands on the juvenile bird; on the right leg a silver band for U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and on the left leg a green band with large numbers that can be read with binoculars from a long distance. The information that is collected from these sightings will help track how far osprey travel during their migration and also how long they live. Currently we have 14 active nests within our jurisdiction, reporting 32 juvenile birds this season—a record! Only time will tell if they survive the perils of their first migration, when they return to Jamaica Bay next spring to start a family of their own, or find their way to another fishy waterway, where their powerful silhouettes will give us hope for a sustainable future.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need
Black pepper was a luxury in the middle ages and was so expensive, it was sometimes used to pay rent or taxes.
Amazingly, Ralph Macchio was 22 years old during filming The Karate Kid. He looked about 12. Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt. Cheese is the most stolen food in the world. The sandwich was said to be invented by the Earl of Sandwich, a gambling addict who didn't want to leave the table to eat. Female dragonflies have been known to fake their own deaths to avoid unwanted male attention. The earliest species of what we would call a tree, the Archaeopteris, existed around 350 million years ago. Sharks have

been swimming around for 400 million years! A U.S. study found that babies cry at night to stop their parents from having another child. In 1875, the Great Whiskey Fire of Dublin claimed the lives of thirteen people. But not how you think. Not one person died as a result of smoke inhalation or burns, but instead from alcohol poisoning by drinking the whiskey flowing through the streets. Grand Theft Auto cost $265 million to make, the most of any video game at the time. By the end of its third day in stores, it had surpassed $1 billion in sales. Facts by Sean McVeigh, factologist.

Badge of History
Sweet Potato Chicken Pie
By Katie Lucev The last conversation I had with my father is the subject of this week’s column. I received a “History-Mystery” inquiry from a gentleman named James P. O’Connor, who resides in North Carolina. His family resided in New York City and Rockaway Beach dating back to the mid 1860s. His inquiry was about an old Fireman’s Badge, made of gold, from RBNY. My father, who had a brain “sharper than a papercut,” without hesitance, told me this… R.B.H.R. stands for Rockaway Beach Hose & Reel, Co. This was mostly a Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company. 296 is the Hose/Reel Co. number. In 1892 they lost all of their firefighting equipment in the
Great Seaside Inferno. The fire devastated the area from the bay to the ocean. The burn marks on the top right side of the badge, indicates the badge was probably caught in the fire, but survived. The trademark on the left side, under the #2, is not clear on the badge. It’s possible this mark is an ID number for the firefighter. Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, Sr. (1933-2018).

Dear Enchantress, I keep doing the same thing over and over with men. I meet men a lot and go on enough dates. I have interesting conversations, the men are gentlemen, it’s all good. And then, I do something to push them away. It’s SO frustrating! I see this happening so often that I KNOW it’s something I’m doing, it makes me not want to date anymore because I keep getting ghosted. They just disappear! I’m doing all the right things, I’m dressing nice, I work out, my body is good, I go with the flow, I listen when they talk, I don’t order the most expensive thing on the menu, I don’t wear too much perfume, I don’t ramble on about myself, ugh. How can I find out what I’m doing wrong? I know you can’t just tell me, but any help would be appreciated. Dear Pattern Maker, Sister. You have shared enough here for me to get a good sense of an issue and it may be so simple to shift this pattern! Yay! SO, it sounds like you are following “The Rules” published in 1995 about how women should date and behave around men. Advice: DO NOT read. It sounds like you have the case of the “nice.” Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying be nasty, I am saying BE AUTHENTIC. Be you. My question to you is, “are you having fun?” Has dating been pleasurable? (I’m not talking sex.) Have you actually been enjoying your time? Or are you striving for a boyfriend, husband? Do you have an agenda for your date? There’s nothing wrong with that, but having that be your only intention and playing the pretty lamppost, who sits silently, plays by the rules and listens, isn’t the most fun, and not revealing your true self can be eerie to sit and share a meal
with, and also a bit.... boring. It feels a bit harsh to use the word “boring,” but let’s face it, it seems like you could have also read the article from a 1957 Good Housekeeping magazine on how to be a good wife. My advice? Have fun! Choose an activity to do together, being actively engaged is a more interesting way to connect. Playing question-asking games is a great way to connect and more authentically relate. It draws a man in for sure, to ask him questions about his present thoughts, and answering too! One of my favorites is to play the compliment game. Take turns giving each other compliments and the person receiving must only listen. Let it be ok to be awkward, dating IS awkward! Another game, “would you rather......” and be silly, or ask real questions. A third game could be, “if I had a magic wand, what would your three wishes be?” Remember to answer as well. Basically, be light, be playful, connect, be present and most of all, have fun! You drive the energy of the date! I challenge you to have the most fun ever! Happy Dating! The Price is Not Right By Lou Pastina
I’ve never been a big coupon guy….Oh, who am I kidding, I have always been a big coupon guy. I loved the Entertainment Book with all the coupons for hotels and restaurants. I love the coupons that Macy’s sends in the mail. I love saving money, and I hate spending money that doesn’t have to be spent. So, I was overjoyed when I went to Macy’s and found some sport coats on sale that I was also able to use my coupons for. Being a man mostly of leisure now, sport coats are the thing! I had the exact sport coat before and I couldn’t remember if I got a large or an extra-large, so figuring that buying with the hope that I would lose weight was a bad strategy, I opted for the extra-large. When I got home,
I realized that my old jacket was a large, not an extra-large and even though I tried them on at the store, I got the extra-large anyway. The coats were boxy, and the cuffs hung too low, I felt like someone in a tent. So, I thought, hey, maybe a tailor could help? In the city, there are tailors on every street. It’s unbelievable! How can that be? How do they compete? Well, I went to the one closest to me. A nice, older gentleman with a quiet smile, and an interesting backstory coming to this country and making a life. I felt in good hands. He measured, he adjusted, he pinned. All the things a good tailor should do. And then I left feeling like I made the right choice. A week later I went back, but he informed me that he was still working on the last jacket. No problem, I said, and oh, by the way, how much

jackets in the size I should have gotten in the first place for $210. So, when the Thief called, I told him to keep the jackets and that’s when I learned that $360 was only a starting point. This was how he did business; so, I said $200, he said $300; I said $200; he said $250; I said $200; he said $210; I said done. Whew, I was exhausted. I didn’t like this haggling. I felt like I was in some Turkish bazaar. All I wanted was my damn jackets tailored, which should have cost about $75. In the end, I picked up the jackets and my tailor friend, he’s a genius, he smiles and says he’s going on vacation and looks forward to helping me in the future! I looked at this sweet old man who had out-negotiated me soundly and wished him a good vacation, and secretly whispered to myself to never go to this place again. The price was definitely not right!

will it cost? You see when we first met, I neglected to ask this question, and now was curious. I did not have a ticket like a normal dry cleaner, he simply took my name and number. He turned and looked at me with that sweet smile and said the jackets were a lot of work, much sewing and cutting, and that the work would be $360. I quickly remembered that I had only paid $210 for all three jackets with my coupons and looked at him in astonishment. I told him how could that be? I paid $140 less to buy them brand new. But I was told that there was much cutting and sewing! I walked out dazed. I rolled it over and over in my mind every time I went to the bank to take the money out to pay this Thief of Baghdad. And then I would walk away from the bank. Finally, I realized, why pay this guy $360 when I can buy new

GRAYBEARDS CROWN CHAMPIONS Proving once again that they might be old but not extinct, old-timers took to the court last Thursday, July 26 at St. Camillus in the Finals of The Graybeards Division of the St. Francis Summer Classic. The early bird game for the elder statesmen division known as The Legends was played in stifling humidity but, like most old-timers, they prefer heat to cold and wowed the crowd with molasses-like lightning. The winners, shown resting comfortably hours later at The Wharf, were led by MVP Rudy Johnson. (Left to right, top: John McCann, Kevin Breen, Mike Daly, Dennis Murphy, Joe Keenan; sitting: John Mul-
laly, Rudy Johnson, Gee Linares, and Bobby Bruns). The main event, featuring The Young Guns, followed. This is the division in which the players are slightly less old. Matt Early led his squad to glory in a bruising game which resulted in real bruising (hamstrings and broken fingers). The champs had enough energy to celebrate to the wee hours at The Wharf. (Seen here, left to right, top: Matt Early, Tim Harkins, Andrew Burns, Mike O’Brien; sitting left to right: Pat Nash, Dollar Bill Egan, and Matt Belford. James Tubridy, not pictured, was also part of the championship squad).
