By Katie McFadden

The power of the ocean is often underestimated. If they didn’t realize it before, many locals learned that during Hurricane Sandy. However not all understand just how strong the ocean can be, especially during times of rough waves and powerful rip currents. Lifeguards are there each day to ensure that locals and visitors have a safe time in the water, but once they hang up their whistle and buoy for the day at 6 p.m., swimmers are warned to not go in the water. Several beachgoers learned why this week in near-drowning incidents during after hours. At around 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, Ladder 137 was responding to a transformer fire when they got a call of a drowning swimmer on Beach 116th Street. The fire department pulled two swimmers out of the water. They performed rescue breathing on a 16-year-old girl until she was transported to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in serious condition. About half-an-hour later, Marine 3, which was at the Beach 116th Rescue, responded to another incident on Beach 98th Street. One struggling swimmer was pulled to shore and was also taken to St. John’s Hospital. Nearby in Long Beach, 23-year-old Kashawn Carlos and a friend were pulled out by rip currents. The friend was rescued by an off-duty lifeguard, but Carlos was submerged for about an hour. He was pulled from the water by Long Beach Police and pronounced dead at South Nassau Communities Hospital at 8:13 p.m. that same evening. There was

a high rip current warning in effect that evening. On Monday, August 3, rescuers were busy once again with multiple near-drowning incidents off Riis Park. At 6:20 p.m., U.S. Park Police Officers responded to a call from a concession worker, for a few distressed swimmers. A U.S. Park Police sergeant jumped into the water and pulled out a victim who did not need medical attention. Another victim, a 62-year-old woman from Brooklyn, was pulled out of the water by a Good Samaritan. U.S. Park Police Officers Blaney, Cosgro and Fajaro performed CPR on the woman until an NYPD helicopter arrived on the scene and transported the woman to Staten Island University North Hospital in critical condition. At 8:05 p.m. on the same evening, the NYPD, FDNY and U.S. Park Police responded to call of two swimmers in distress at Riis Park. A 12-year-old Brooklyn girl was pulled from the water by a Good Samaritan and Officer Connell of the U.S. Park Police and Firefighter Brigado of the FDNY performed CPR until she was flown to Staten Island University Hospital North. Officials say she is in critical, but stable condition. The young girl’s 32-year-old mother was taken to Beth Israel Kings Highway Hospital and was later released. A firefighter who assisted in these rescues was taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital for minor injuries. A high rip current warning was also in effect that evening. “The rip currents were very difficult that evening, but everyone’s actions were very heroic and comContinued on page 13

Four Lifeguards Receive Steve Belson Scholarship By Katie McFadden On Saturday, August 1, dozens celebrated the life of firefighter Steve Belson at the 14th Annual Steve Belson Memorial Swim and Music Festival. On Saturday morning, several gathered at Bell’s Beach at Beach 92nd Street to remember Belson, who died on September 11, 2001. A fire truck raised a large American flag above the event as attendees participated in a halfmile swim in honor of the surfer who spent 10 years as a lifeguard. Each year, local lifeguards who

attend college are selected as winners of the $1,000 Steve Belson Memorial Scholarship Fund College Incentive Award. This year, four lifeguards received the award. They were Gabrielle O’Byrne, a student at Brooklyn College and a lifeguard at 17th Street Shack; Jason Nachame, a student at the University of Vermont and a lifeguard 117th Street Shack; Kaelin Rivera, a student at the University of Scranton and a lifeguard at 149th Street Shack and Tara Muoio, a student at New York University and a life-

guard in Breezy Point. The event and scholarship fund was organized by Fund Directors John Maguire, Pat Savage and Sean Kellar. The day finished off with an evening celebration at the Bungalow Bar featuring musical acts such as The Squid Trio, The Lustre Kings and Bill Kirchen and John Tichy of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Proceeds from the event go towards the scholarship fund.

BROAD CHANNEL WATER BARREL GIVEAWAY In an effort to lower home water bills and encourage water conservation, the city’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be holding an event to give away free rain barrels to Broad Channel homeowners. On Sunday, August 9th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and Senator Joseph Addabbo will hold a rain barrel giveaway together with the DEP at the Broad Channel

American Legion Hall, located at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard. “Rain barrels are a great way for families to reduce their water usage,” Goldfeder said. “Not only does this translate into real savings on monthly water bills, it also helps protect our sewer system and reduce street flooding.” The barrels serve to catch water runoff from houses during rainstorms so that homeowners can reuse it and

to prevent the water from causing sewers to flood. The event comes after the city voted to raise water rates by 2.97 percent on July 1. Two-hundred and forty barrels will be given away on Sunday. Residents interested in participating must pre-register at www. FreeRainBarrelEvent.com and are encouraged to contact Goldfeder’s or Addabbo’s offices for more information.

WHETHER UPTOWN OR DOWNTOWN, NIGHT AGAINST CRIME IS HUGE SUCCESS By Dylan Watton and Sheneca Sharpe The community and police were brought together on Beach 17th Street and Beach 94th Street for an evening of good food, good music, good dancing, and much more at the 32nd Annual National Night Out Against Crime. Rockaway’s two police precincts (the 100th and 101st) and the 23rd Transit District participated in the events, which were coordinated by Jazmine Outlaw, President of the 101st Precinct Community Council, and Danny Ruscillo, President of the 100th Precinct Community Council. “My hopes for this event is to really let the community come together,” Outlaw said. “To see that there can be collaborative efforts between the community and the police and that there is a common ground where people can feel comfortable being around the police.” That is what the events were all about--creating a bond between the police and their communities. Despite the fact that there can be some underlying tension between the police and the people they serve, this event was to show that there are constructive ways for the police to serve the community and for the community to work effectively with the police.

For the 100th Precinct and Ruscillo, the night finally coming was a welcome sigh of relief. As reported earlier in the Rockaway Times, the event had to be moved from its initial location at Beach Channel High School due to logistical issues with the Department of Education and the Mayor’s Office. “Everybody’s told me how much they love this space!” Ruscillo said excitedly. “This turned out so much better than we thought it would. It’s been very nice of the community, representatives, agencies, and organizations to come out tonight.” Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder arrived at both locations to speak to the community and to have a good time with his constituents. At the 100th Precinct event on Beach 94th Street, Goldfeder was a willing victim of a dunk tank. “I was born and raised in Far Rockaway, and we’ve always found a way to work together with the community and the police and with every entity that tried to keep us safe,” Assemblyman Goldfeder said. “So we need to enhance the dialogue and make sure we’re paying attention to each other.” Before the event began on Beach Continued on page 30

Bike Adventures

Bike Ride Adventures: Floyd Bennett Field By Katie McFadden I’d like to say there’s no bad time for an outdoor adventure, but I don’t encourage anyone to go during the middle of a heat wave. I did, though, and despite the heat, it turned out to be one of my biggest adventures yet. On Tuesday, July 28, I put on my iPod and hopped on my bike for a roughly four-mile ride to Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.

I thought I knew the area pretty well. It’s where the United States Park Police station is and my dad brought me there often as a kid. However, there’s much more than I remember. So much more, that I had my expert cartographer, editor Kevin Boyle, draw me a map. It looked like a kindergarten project, but when I actually got there, it all made sense. After crossing the Marine Parkway Bridge to Brooklyn, I crossed

Flatbush Avenue at the first traffic light and went down Aviation Road. My first stop was NASCAR. Or at least a scaled-down version. Not too far down the road, there is a racecar track for remote control cars, to the right. There was no one there on a Tuesday morning, so I had to use my imagination of what it would look like on a Sunday afternoon. Some shells of cars, which I suppose didn’t fare so well, were in surrounding garbage cans, so I got an idea of how big the cars are, that are raced around the intricate track, while their drivers stand on an elevated platform above it. After the pit stop at the racecar track, I continued down Aviation Road, passing by the Park Police office and the Armed Forces Reserve Center and caught a nice glimpse of the bay at the end of it. I then followed a road to my left, which creeped me out a bit. Down this road, there are a few massive abandoned buildings, which look like they’d be perfect for an episode of The Walking Dead. In front of another building is a massive, I’m guessing 50-foot- tall wooden structure made up of crossed logs, which reminded me of the Blair Witch Project. I later learned that it’s just a military training obstacle. I also found a neglected greenhouse, overgrown with weeds. If the National Park Service ever wants to host a Halloween event on that back road, it would be perfect. I’m just glad it was daytime. Further down the road, I found an archery range to my right. I was surprised to find two men practicing their bow-and-arrow skills at the permit-only range, which

to go that way. The friendly Ranger also told me that the Ecology Village is not a public venue, but a place where city kids were participating in an educational day camp program. So I rode on. I found myself on the road behind Aviator, which was one of

features about 20 different targets. When I continued along the road, I was detoured down another road heading back toward Aviator Sports Center, because the road lead to an NYPD station with several signs that said, “Do Not Enter and flashing lights. When I reached Ecology Village, down the side road, a NPS Ranger confirmed the warning, saying I would have been met with yelling if I had tried

background of a garden that was full of life. I continued down the runway until I found another on my right, with signs indicating that I would find the Remote Control Airplane Field, which I was particularly interested in, fishing areas, boating launch ramps and the Department of Sanitation Training Center. It seemed like one of

many runways at what was once New York City’s first municipal airport, in the 1930s and ‘40s. There’s something about riding down a runway that makes you want to make airplane noises as you “fly down it. At least, in my head, I did. Along this road, you’ll find the Floyd Bennett Field Association’s community garden, which features dozens of private plots, all flush with greenery this summer. You’ll see many colorful flowers, a giant willow tree and more. It was a nice spot to take in the beauty and catch some shade on the hot day. It was pretty amazing to see the old, historic airplane hangars in the

Ticket-traffic agents will never be loved. But do some have to go out of their way to be despised? We’ve heard of agents ticketing cars when people visit open houses and other times when people are jockeying cars from the driveway. You pull one car out on the street to move a second car from the driveway and the car on the street (left there for a minute) gets a ticket. Come on. ***** Phil Goldfeder joined the Family Fun Run last Friday and said he was expecting to run a personal best because he had to finish before sunset. ***** Talk about a vanity plate. DNAInfo reported a Far Rockaway man was arrested for driving a van with a homemade license plate (made of cardboard and crayons). Oh, the driver has also had his license suspended 166 times. We asked DMV how that is possible. Did he get his license reinstated 165 times? Were all those suspensions concurrent (like a guy who is sentenced to six life sentences?) A DMV spokesman said yes, someone can have their license suspended (again and again) if they don’t pay a fine, for instance. They shouldn’t be driving at all but if they get stopped it’s just another suspension. We are left wondering how many times the guy got pulled over to warrant 166 suspensions. ***** Congratulations to members of the Rockaway Little League who were honored at Citi Field and seen on ESPN. Very cool! ***** The National Night Out Against Crime events in both the 100 and 101st Precincts were great, fun events. Kudos to those who volunteered to get wet in the dunk tanks. The first few times it’s kind of fun but after a while‌ ***** Well, that’s something we didn’t know. Actress and comedian Amy Schumer is a cousin of Senator Chuck Schumer. (No cracks about him being an actor and a comedian, too!) ***** Best of luck to some local lifeguards, Patrick Kilgallen, Thomas O’Neill, Bri-

an O’Neill and Christian Foti, who are competing in the US Lifesaving Association championships in Florida this weekend. ***** Good catch by The Pointer (Rockaway Point News). Last week they spotted a legal notice about the “availability of surplus federal property. It seems the Feds are seeking “Notices of Interest (NOI) for nine acres and two buildings in Fort Tilden. Many of you are familiar with the location because Build It Back and other agencies set up camp there. The notice states: “This property may be available for conveyance for public benefit purposes. That sounds fine. But the very next sentence is alarming: “State and local governments, homeless service providers and other interested parties may submit NOIs no later than 5pm on November 30, 2015 to the FTLRA located at the Office of the Queens Borough President. Homeless service providers?! One of the requirements is “the benefit to the community from such proposed use including the numbers of persons served.

Chicks to Go (the Peruvian chicken place on RBB and 97th) got a great write up in The New York Times (the same newspaper that printed a laughably bad piece about Riis Park recently); Connolly’s was named one of the 13 best beach bars in the country by Vinepair.com. From the outside AB Studios is unassuming, to put it mildly. Located on Rockaway Beach Blvd. across from Martin De Porres High School, it is a multi-colored shack with a long metal gate blocking its driveway. It still looks like a remnant of Sandy. Inside the gate, however, a transformation is taking place. In 2013, Nick Mastros was struck by an idea. Wanting a place to jam with his friends and record music, he created a makeshift studio at his house on 98th Street. A year later, he had to move out of that location, and his new abode on 96th St. did not have adequate space or amenities to have proper playing sessions. “I simply couldn’t build a studio in my basement,” Nick said. About four months ago, the property on the boulevard became available. The space worked perfectly. Inside, the transformation begins to take shape. The front, shorter half of the shack is used by Nick’s dad, Paul, to repair exercise equipment. The other half stretches far back and is now the official home of AB Studios, so named after the way two recordings are mixed and edited in music production. Today, pop-punk outfit Arson Welles is rehearsing. The members—Bryan, Tom, and Jim—have been living with Nick for the past year in what they termed “a great match made on Craigslist.” “It’s like thrown together, but it works,” Nick says of the studio. The studio has foam on the walls to help absorb sound, and has more than ample space for a full drum set, guitar, bass, several microphones, a Marshall stack, and a mini-soundboard. “Right now it’s a mostly a rehearsal space with some do-it-yourself recording equipment,” Nick says. “The

plan is to make it an operating commercial studio in the next few months.” He is currently charging $20 per hour for bands and musicians that want record or rehearse at AB Studios. The progress Nick has made in the first four months is remarkable. “There was six feet of garbage just surrounding the place,” he said. “We’re on our third dumpster now.” Though currently running electricity via a generator, Nick said that an inspector should be coming in the very near future to officially install electrical equipment. He is also looking to paint the studio, and is encouraging artists from in and around Rockaway to come in and bring to life the 20x20 walls. Nick has many ideas for the property beyond just the studio. The building itself is barely half of the land. A large wooden picnic table is just outside the structure. Beyond that, a lawn filled with expansive tall weeds lies, with a giant fire pit in the middle. “I want to have a huge lobster boil as a summer send-off,” Nick noted. He plans to remove the weeds invading the lawn and would like to build a tent or stage to hold live shows. The area can easily accommodate a healthy number of concertgoers. A Rockaway native, Nick cited The Who as the first band he ever listened to and proudly wore a Ramones shirt while giving the tour of the studio. “I play a little bit of everything,” he said as hopped behind the drum set and started laying down a fast-paced punk beat. Tom and Jim joined in on guitar and bass, respectively, and Bryan, who has a tattoo of drumsticks on the side of his body, began thrashing around. It’s music to Rockaway’s ears.

Fear of Falling? Tired of that Walker or Cane? Walk Too Slow?

More Than A Movie By Dylan Watton The chilly breeze was almost a deterrent. As I was looking down on Beach 106 St. from my terrace, I thought “This is not optimal beach movie weather.” But I decided to suck it up—when else was I going to get a chance to see a flick on a big screen, outdoors, for free, just steps from my apartment building’s door? Tonight was an opportunity to eat some of Rockaway’s finest food, enjoy a cold beverage, and watch a film I had never seen by a director I had never chosen to experience, Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. In my haste to get out the door and make it to Caracas before the kitchen closed, I ended up coming woefully unprepared for the movie. No chair, no blanket, and perhaps most damning, no snacks (or cold beverages). But thankfully I need not worry. Caracas’ divine pernil arepa combined with a refreshing Modelo Especial was more than enough to hold me over. Shortly thereafter, I ran into my brother and his girlfriend who were going to be catching the movie as well, and unlike me, they came prepared with a tapestry to sit on and some snacks. They were gracious enough to let me hang with them. How fantastic! My initial concerns about the breeze quickly became unfounded. A light sweatshirt negated its effects, and there were minimal issues with the sand blowing. Additionally, the giant inflatable screen the movie would be projected on was clearly designed to be wind resistant. With everything in place, the festivities began at sundown. The representatives from the Rockaway Civic Association thanked everyone for coming and held a raffle beforehand to help support the organization and the Beach Flix program, which is in its fourth year. They also implored the moviegoers to help keep the beach clean. “Please take your garbage with you,” they asked. “This is our backyard.” As the coup-de-grace, Caracas provided free popcorn to all guests.

While the ambiance and scenery surrounding the big screen was nothing short of sensational, the movie itself was not so…fantastic. Based on the 1970’s children’s book of the same name by Roald Dahl, though much more expansive, the film tells the tale of a thieving family-man fox who must avoid the farmers from whom he steals. Making use of the antiquated yet painstakingly beautiful technique of stop-motion animation, the film features many of the usual Wes Anderson suspects (George Clooney, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, et. al) lending their voices to the canine caper. Anderson’s directing style—featuring frequent close-ups juxtaposed with wide landscape shots, fast-paced dialogue and movements, and idiosyncratic characters—has received praise from many fans and critics alike, but is simply off-putting to me. The film jumps from chapter to chapter with purpose and wit, but despite a strong script and mostly serviceable voice work, it failed to connect emotionally with me. This is especially compounded by my feeling that the titular character, frankly, is a jerk (sorry, George). Rife with self-admitted contradiction, Mr. Fox is agile yet too fast for his own mind, caring about his family yet deeply selfish, and a Robin Hood-type looking to mostly enrich himself. This is not to say that Beach Flix wasn’t a resounding success, or that the vast majority of the audience didn’t laugh at Mr. Fox’s antics. Surrounded by families, couples on date night, or just the average boardwalk goer on their evening promenade, the backdrop of the ocean and a bright moon with the silver screen in the foreground provides a scene that only Rockaway could provide. The next Beach Flix screening will be the original Jurassic Park, and will take place on Friday, August 7, at Beach 87th Street. It is sponsored by Rippers.

Dear Editor: (Re last week’s letter by Ruth Graves about strangers who found and returned a camera). I am very proud to identify the two good Samaritans that returned the Go-Pro camera to its owner as my husband and son, Patrick and Joseph Foye. Ms. Graves, thank you for your kind letter. It reaffirmed for Joe that doing the right thing is always the way to go. Stacey Foye

Flag Care Dear Editor, As a new resident to the Rockaway peninsula, I have become an avid walker along the beach. Being the proud son of a United States Marine who was a recipient of the Purple Heart during WWII, it fills me with great pride and joy to see all of the American flags being flown and displayed along the beach from Rockaway Park to Fort Tilden. I know that all of these very patriotic Americans do this with a great deal of respect and admiration for Old Glory. At the end of the day, when the flag is being packed away, a few who may not be aware of proper flag etiquette unknowingly allow the flag to touch the ground, wrap or bunch it up and then shove it into their bag or wagon. Folding the flag properly only takes a few minutes. I remember growing up in Brooklyn, Mr. G who lived up the block, displayed the flag every day, weather permitting. The kids on the block would gather around at sunset and wait for him to pick who would get the privilege to fold the flag. Mr. G would stand by ensuring that it was done correctly. This is a memory I will cherish for-

Sent to Councilman Eric Ulrich Dear Mr. Ulrich: I am inquiring about the tennis courts at Beach Channel High School. These courts are in need of repair. I understand the Beach Channel High school received upwards of 35 million dollars to repair and rebuild after Sandy. However, I have found no indication that the use of these funds will include the tennis courts. The Beach Channel Courts have had some of the loose cracks cleaned out and tar poured in to those cracks. However, this intervention has lead to a lot of sticking to the surface when the player is trying to run after a ball. Now the courts are unsafe. As a resident of the Rockaways and a avid tennis player it would benefit the entire community to have tennis courts that were up to the same standard as some of the other surrounding communities. Could you please let me know if the BCHS courts are scheduled for a overhaul? If their is anything I can do to move this forward in a positive direct for the community I would be happy to assist. HATCH, MATCH AND DISPATCH I would like to take a moment to thank all of you out there who took the time to email me your comments on my recent column regarding the passing of my mother at the grand old age of 97. All of your kind words were greatly appreciated, especially those who remarked that they will miss the references to my Mom that accompanied many of my columns to date. Although she never actually read any news, Mom loved to read the newspapers for the expressed purpose of keeping up with all the birth, wedding and obituary announcements each edition contained. “Hatch, Match and Dispatch” were her terms for her three favorite interests! Even though the Rockaway Times does not cover Mom’s much loved “hatch, match and dispatch” interests, she always looked forward to each week’s edition, which she read front to back. I always assumed she simply feigned interest in the paper because of me and I once asked her what she found so fascinating in the rest of the paper, besides my column. She looked at me laughing and said, “Your scribbling’s fascinating? My God but you are full of yourself. I pray to God that you are not wandering around Broad Channel thinking you’re the next Jimmy Breslin. I like the paper because of the one word that is printed at the top of the front page that says ‘FREE’ and your friend’s boiling water column. Come to think of it, you might want to mention to that nice young fellow Kevin who hired you that his paper might not travel so quickly to the bird cage if he started carrying the Irish Comics. We’ve still got a few relations down in that Rockaway area I would like to keep my eye on!” Truth be told I fully believe the reason Mom liked the Rockaway Times was because of none other than our master wordsmith, editor and sometime photographer, Kevin Boyle and his rather eclectic column, Boyleing

Points. In June of 2014, Kevin told me about his pending involvement with the publication of our area’s newest newspaper, The Rockaway Times, and asked if I would be interested in contributing a “Broad Channel” column. Perhaps it was serendipitous that I received Kevin’s email while I was attending our Grand Matriarch’s (aka: She Who Must be Obeyed) 96th birthday party in Woodside. At the time Mom had noticed that her favorite column in our other Rockaway weekly had gone missing and asked me about the status of the “...that young man Kevin who thinks Irish wakes are comical and writes the nutty columns about boiling water...” Her words, not mine. Knowing that she has never met Kevin or saw his picture I asked her why she would describe him as a young man. She looked at me as if had two heads while responding “You’re all here for my 96th birthday...if you can’t figure that out for yourself then I truly have raised an idiot!” Rightfully chastised, I told Mom about Kevin’s offer about this column and she immediately asked me what I would be paid for my efforts. I explained that Kevin had offered “a pat on the back and maybe a T-shirt.” She thought about that for about two seconds and then offered me the following sage advice. “Go for it...tell him to forget the pat on the back, it will only go to your head, but make sure you get the T-shirt. If you make an ass out of yourself they can fire your behind right away before you become a total embarrassment to the nice man and you will at least get a T-shirt out of the deal.” Needless to say, a copy of the Rockaway Times and a T-shirt accompanied Mom on her trip to meet up with Dad at Gate of Heaven cemetery in Valhalla, New York. New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) inspectors made an unannounced visit to St. John’s Hospital on July 14th. After three days of thorough review of processes and documentation in all areas of the laboratory, DOH surveyors walked away handing St. John’s a stellar review. A St. John’s spokesman said the five inspectors unanimously expressed de-

light and pleasure at the impressive level of professionalism and competency exhibited by St. John’s laboratory team, stating that St. John’s Episcopal Hospital has now raised the bar as the standard of excellence in this area for all other New York State hospitals. This is a result of perseverance, dedication and most importantly, teamwork.

New Book Covers Jewish Communities Arcadia Publishing has announced the publication of Jewish Communities of the Five Towns and the Rockaways by The Jewish Heritage Society of the Five Towns. About the book: The Five Towns— comprising the villages of Cedarhurst and Lawrence and the communities of Woodmere, Hewlett, and Inwood— is an area nestled on the South Shore of Long Island next to the easternmost part of Queens, known as Far Rockaway. Originally popular as a Jewish summer vacation spot near the Atlantic Ocean, the Five Towns and the Far Rockaway area grew to become a thriving, year-round Jewish me-

tropolis, with thousands of families and scores of synagogues and Jewish educational institutions. A center for shopping and kosher restaurants, the Five Towns area has become one of the most popular locations for young, married Jewish couples. Jewish influence has expanded greatly in local government and education. The rich history of the early years of Jewish growth and development in the Five Towns and Rockaways lends a deeper understanding of this phenomenal change of demographics and influence that has occurred over the last few decades.

Arverne Library Gets $3.8 Million for Expansion Borough President Melinda Katz announced an allocation of $14 million of her Fiscal Year 2016 discretionary capital funds for important expansions, renovations and technology across 12 library branches throughout the borough. “The millions of families who rely on the Queens Library services deserve nothing less than a world-class library system, said Katz. “The Board of Trustees – which the Mayor and I reformed in 2014 thanks to prompt state legislation – continues to move the Library in the right direction consistent with its educational purpose.

This capital allocation will help ensure the Queens Library branches remain up-to-date and better able to serve its educational purpose as a community hub of learning, literacy and culture. Among one of the 12 Queens Library locations to obtain funding are local branch Queens Library at Arverne, which will receive $3.8 million for expansion. This is the largest chunk of money going toward any of the Queens branches. Several other branches will receive money for things like security cameras and renovations.

Several Nearly Drown in After-Hour Incidents Continued from page 3

mendable, U.S. Park Police Lieutenant Peter Culver said. “Everyone came, from the Park Police to the FDNY, the NYPD, EMS and there were a few good Samaritans that really helped out in this situation. Captain Craig Adelman of the 100th Precinct responded to the incidents and put it simply. “Stay out of the water when lifeguards are not on duty. You are risking your life and the lives of others, he said. More than 50 percent of drowning incidents occur in natural bodies of water. However, the chance of drowning on a beach with lifeguards is only one in 18 million, according to the U.S. Lifesaving Association. Beachgoers sometimes underestimate the power of the ocean and overestimate their own abilities. When it comes to rip currents, even the strongest of swimmers can panic when caught in one. Rip currents are powerful, fastmoving channels of water (up to 8 feet per second) that typically flow from the shoreline to beyond the area where waves break. They can

form on any beach where waves are breaking, often near sandbars and jetties. What does it look like? Look for a choppy channel of water moving in a churning motion, a line of sea foam, seaweed or debris moving steadily out to sea or a break in a set of incoming waves. Still not sure? Ask the lifeguard if they spot one. If you happen to get caught in a rip current, the most important thing not to do is panic. Stay calm and don’t try to fight the current. Instead, swim parallel to the beach to swim out of the current. When safely out of the current, swim at an angle, out of the way of the current and head back to the beach. If you can’t swim that way, remain calm and float or tread water lightly until the rip current strength weakens and you can swim away from the current and toward shore. If you can’t make it to shore, try to wave your arms and call for help to draw the attention of a lifeguard or someone else who may be able to help. Liquefied Natural Gas, better known as LNG: Do you know what it is? Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4) that has been converted to liquid form for ease of storage or transport. It takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state. Well, now you do! Do you know that an import facility called Port Ambrose is planned just 26 miles off of Rockaway Beach, 22 miles off the coast of Long Beach and just 17 miles off of Jones Beach? Well, now you do!! Do you that on May 14, 2015, the New York City Council passed Resolution 549, sponsored by one of our very own Rockaway Councilman Donavan Richards and also supported by our other Rockaway Councilman Eric Ulrich? Well, you do now!!! The Resolution, also supported by our neighboring Councilman in Coney island, Mark Treyger, called on Governor Cuomo to veto the plan to construct an LNG import facility off of our shores. Did you know that now almost three months later Governor An-

drew Cuomo still has not vetoed the planned Port Ambrose facility so close to our shores? Well, you do now!!!! Do you know that on Sunday, August 16, starting at 4:30 p.m. at the surfing beach at Beach 88th90th there will be an informational session to plead to Governor Andrew Cuomo to: KEEP US FREE FROM LNG as we DRAW A LINE IN THE SAND! VETO PORT AMBROSE!!!!! At the event there will be messages to Governor Cuomo from many guest speakers including several of our local elected officials requesting that the Governor veto Port Ambrose. We will have letter writing, petition signing and a banner signing, plus music and more!! I hope everyone who cares about the beach and the ocean around us will come out and help us fight against LNG. Please bring lots of signs, as we will have a huge photo taken along the groin (jetty), to send to the Governor. Anyone who would like to help at this event please contact me at seathenight@ aol.com. 2015 RBSA Youth Surf Championships!!! In less than ten days on August 15 we will be hosting the first in a series of four contests at the main surf jetty at 89th St. We’re looking to have first check-in around 8 a.m. for contestants with limited, if any at all, spots left over for beach sign-up. I strongly advise parents to sign your kids up via this site: h t t p : / / w w w. e v e n t b r i t e . com/e/hammerhead-nycyouth-surf-series-2015-tickets17869554318?aff=es2 This first contest is sponsored by UMA’s Restaurant with Share The Stoke Foundation. The contest is for kids aged 16 and under and we are getting more & more spon-

sors with, hopefully, a cash prize for the eventual winners of the series in the respective age group. We will have some of the finest judges on hand along with possibly the best beach marshal on the East Coast running the event from the competitors tent in Rick Anthony. So sign your kids up ASAP as there are very limited spots in each age group. This will also help us put together the daily schedule of heats and help us run on time. Divisions will be - U10, U12, U14, U16 - Contestants can be same age or under as of date 10/10. Did you hear that? Some of us salty and crusty old

surfers are mostly self-taught in being acutely aware of the tides, clouds, temperature, and some of us can even get a sniff of the air to know the wind is about to change. But one observation I’ve made recently only obliquely related to surfing, where are the planes? I fondly remember the days being in the surf and having the Concord buzz our heads, well that’s what it felt like from the sound it

generated as it knifed the sky. Usually bang-on the wind eddy roughly 1:30 – 2 p.m. most days from the S or SW, the jets come roaring over us from JFK. For at least a few months I haven’t noticed a single one, unless it’s a much higher plane that took off N heading W over the Belt and then turning E. Maybe all of Joe Hartigan’s work has paid off!

Hands on Experience Rockaway resident Lee Meyer stopped by the Rockaway Times office to share how proud he is of his 16-year-old granddaughter, Barbara “Bobbi” Meyer. The teen just returned from a two-week volunteer medical trip to Ghana in Africa. Ever since she was little, Meyer has aspired to follow in the foot-

steps of her father, Dr. Robert H. Meyer, an emergency medicine doctor at Montefiore Medical Center who was a longtime Rockaway resident. Wanting some hands on experience, Bobbi Meyer joined the medical trip with Projects Abroad, where she got some experience in drawing blood and treating some patients with leprosy.

Bob Marley ‘Thanked’ By Nigel Scott

By Sheneca Sharpe

Plenty of words and images come to mind when people think of Bob Marley but perhaps the most fitting word is legendary. His legend is what Rockaway resident photographer, Nigel Scott, captured in the photos he took of the reggae artist. On August 1, Scott debuted his photography exhibition “Thank You, Mr. Marley to the public at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street. Born and raised in Jamaica, Scott was a fan of Bob Marley even before he picked up a camera. “Yes, being from Jamaica, Bob Marley was and still is an inspiration, Scott said.

Scott took these photos either when Marley was on stage electrifying the crowd or in more personal moments when the artist was just laughing and hanging around in the comfort of friends. Scott only had one thing he wanted the public to take away from this exhibition, “His unwavering empathy, because in Scott’s moments of meeting the reggae artist, that’s all he felt around his presence. Scott thought that the Rockaway Surf Club was a perfect place to debut his locked away photos. Being a surfer himself, it seemed a match made in heaven. “I thought it would be a perfect

place for the images of Bob Marley and a great place to ‘Thank Mr. Marley’ for all his inspiration, Scott said. Scott’s love for surfing can be found in his artwork. There is a mini surfboard hung on the wall with Marley’s photo on it. And there is a photo of an actual surfboard on Bob Marley’s beach in Jamaica with a painting he did himself of Marley on the nose of the board. He added personal touches to the photos, like painting the background in red so that the focus would be only on Marley in that moment. The atmosphere during the exhibition was lively. With delicious food and the beverages being served, a

positive vibe surrounded the place completely. Everyone loved the photographs, identifying their favorites or simply remarking how amazing they were. It was a beautiful summer evening, and if you’re sad that you missed the exhibition, don’t worry. The exhibition will run until August 15 at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. Even though Marley is gone, these photographs almost make it seem like he never left. (Sheneca Sharpe is a recent graduate of Rockaway Park High School and is heading to SUNY-Fredonia in the fall).

17th Street, there was a small parade to officially start the event. Little children were holding signs to represent their camps and there were socially conscious signs that many adults held, stating phrases such as “STOP THE VIOLENCE and “Bringing Communities Together to Reduce Violence. The focus of the Night Out Against Crime wasn’t just to help bring together the community and the police, but to help reduce the violence in the Rockaways as well. Malik Sanders, a spokesperson for Councilman Donovan Richards, and Goldfeder believe a way to help reduce the violence is to also focus on gun control. “There is no gun manufacturer in Far Rockaway, there are no plants, no NRA. So how are we getting these guns here? Sanders asked. “Right now we’re funding a gun buyback program for Far Rockaway. The first year we started, when I worked with [Councilman] James Sanders, we got 200 guns off the streets in six hours! So for next summer we plan to work with the Queens District Attorney and also the NYPD. Hopefully, that’s one thing that will help take guns off the streets. “Look, the biggest problem is not the police, it’s really as a community speaking up, Goldfeder added. “The police can only do so much. We have to be vigilant ourselves to weed out the bad apples and do a better job to keep our families safe.

The 100th Precinct and the 23rd Transit District handed out their annual Cop of the Year awards to Officer Richard Collins, a 10-year cop for the 100th Precinct who has spent his entire career there, and to Officer Desmond Boden, another 10-year cop who is soon to be promoted to the detectives’ bureau. “I’ve been working in Rockaway for a decade now and I love it, Officer Collins said. “I know most of the people here now. It’s very community-oriented here. As Goldfeder fell in to the dunk tank for the third time, Officer Collins made sure to say, “and I love that guy. The event also afforded Rockaway, Broad Channel, and Breezy Point residents the opportunity to experience a night filled with fun activities. At the 101st Precinct, food was provided by Applebee’s, along with free ice cream cones, while uptown the Breezy Dogs truck served out milkshakes and kids could get free cotton candy and popcorn. There were bouncy houses, a dunk tank, face painting, a football toss, and more. Rocnation, a dance troupe, performed downtown while on Beach 94th Street there was a karate show put on by World Champions Karate Center. “I really wanted to give Rockaway a break! Outlaw said. “We don’t really have events around here, so I wanted to make sure this was a fun event for the community!

Dishing the DIRT Around the Neighborhood By Valerie Dare

Every year I plant my garden, thinking I know what to expect, and every year I’m hit with surprises. My ego is up ‌ my ego is down. I see pictures on Facebook of people’s lovely gardens and their robust harvests and feel defeated and intimidated. So, to conquer my insecurities, I decided to leave the comfort zone of Facebook and my own backyard and meet my fellow gardeners. The main thing I have learned in my travels is that gardeners are The Nicest Most Generous People I have ever met! So let me tell you about my journey ‌ “I want to grow everything!â€? says Alice Ware Miller from Belle Harbor, “but my space is limited, so I grow a little of everything.â€? And she’s not kidding. In a small space, Alice is growing lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, beans, celery, scallions, squash, cucumbers, eggplant, and for the first time, potatoes, along with a variety of herbs. Oh, I almost forgot, she’s also planted pumpkins. She tells me, “I don’t know what I’m doing. I just put them in and wait to see what happens.â€? She grew many of her plants from organic seed and uses organic soil. She’s not a fan of growing tomatoes in pots ‌ she doesn’t feel there is enough room for the roots to grow. And I agree with Alice. I tried two tomato plants in pots this year and they are more work than everything else in my garden. They require constant watering and attention and one developed blossom bottom rot. The prize in Alice’s backyard, though, was the rain barrel. “I got the rain barrel from the NYC Environmental Protection program in 2014. I just installed it this June. I really couldn’t say yet how much it’s saving me but its better water for the veggies and flowers.â€? Alice has never tried kale and I just loved her lettuce, so we made a trade. And she threw in some scallions. A week later, she called me at work, “Can I stop by your house to drop off some beans?â€? Yes, Alice, Yes! In all honesty, they were the best beans I ever ate! The following week I visited Kelly McMahon and her garden on Beach 96th Street. “I always have something that I’m experimenting with and then I’ve got my classics down that I know I’m always going to want a lot of.â€? Kelly uses only organic soil, seeds and plants. She has always been

Page 31

THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, 2015

careful about it but, this year, is being extra serious and detailed. Kelly’s boyfriend built her planters and grow beds and all the boxes are lined. “The most challenging thing,â€? says Kelly, “is getting good soil.â€? Kelly and Arts in Parts share a space and composted this year. She’s keeping a record of what is growing from the composted soil as opposed to other bagged organic soil she’s purchased to document the different effects. Kelly uses worm casings, which you can buy in a bag, and makes a delectable “worm teaâ€? with it. Her plants love it. She’s also exploring companion planting ‌ “planting things next to each other that work together and help fix the soil.â€? Another area Kelly is testing out this year is planting edible flowers. I was nibbling on borage flowers while walking around her garden and they are tasty ‌ they have a nice sweetness to them. Borage crosses over into the two areas Kelly is experimenting with ‌ it’s a great companion for tomatoes and the pretty lavender colored flowers are edible. She’s been growing for five years and says every single year she feels unprepared and rushed to get it all done. I can relate to that! When you’re working all week, it’s hard to find the necessary time. Kelly has found that mornings in the garden work best for her. It’s the quietest time, not too hot yet, and she sees things she doesn’t think she’d pick up on during the hustle and bustle of the day. Oh, and Kelly is growing peas ‌ my favorite! She let me munch on them right off the vine. As I was leaving her backyard, she presented me with parting gifts of a borage plant and some assorted cherry tomatoes. Kelly says one of the best things about growing is being able to trade. Everyone has their specialty and, by sharing with one another, we’re creating lasting community bonds. I met Randi Savron at the 91st St Community Garden, of which she is a member. It’s a beautiful, quiet space and so in demand that Randi had to spend five years on a waiting list before she could obtain a spot. And the waiting list continues to grow. She has a rooftop garden at her home but that only allows for very limited growing. The Community Garden was perfect. The garden does not have any direct water supply so everything is watered from a big water tank that is filled by the fire dept. So-

lar panels are installed in preparation for future activities. The garden hosts pot luck dinners on a fairly regular basis, with everyone contributing and sharing their produce. They also have a working beehive and the bees have plenty of pollination work to do. Eventually, the space will be also be used for educational purposes. Randi introduced me to Tim Hill, who founded the garden in 2008. “I wanted people to have green space where they could learn from one another how to be somewhat selfsustaining. They work all day and want to come home to something nice. He welcomes newcomers but wants them to understand that when you come here, it’s not about planting your own flag but joining

into the community that already exists. Tim pointed out the apple trees and peach trees planted as a natural barrier between the garden and the residents. Everything serves a purpose here. Tim understands the importance of returning the nutrients to the soil after you’ve harvested. His wife will be planting soybeans and rye this year with the goal to turn it over in the spring, returning needed nutrients to the soil. Tim’s grandfather was a farmer and gave Tim some good advice; “Don’t bring New York to the farm. Take some of the farm to New York. Tim would like to see Community Gardens on vacant spaces throughout all of Rockaway. Together we could help Tim’s dream become a reality.

Why WON’T I exercise? 18. What does Chinese food taste like? 19. What does pizza taste like? 20. What does beer taste like?

Answers:

1. Everything. Ten minutes after you drink a can of soda,10 teaspoons of SUGAR hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don’t VOMIT as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor. 2. WRONG! The artificial sweeteners may save you 140 calories but they trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain! 3. As soon as possible. Put on smaller but tighter clothing. You won’t want to eat as much and you will begin to feel like you have accomplished something! 4. NO. Low fat on a label means MORE sugar!!! Processed food has to get the flavor from something. 5. Yes you should buy SOME organic grown stuff, but it is not necessary to buy ALL organic. Yes: Peaches, Apples, Peppers, Celery, Nectarines, Strawberries, Cherries, Pears, Grapes, Spinach, Potatoes, Carrots, Milk, Beef, Peanut Butter, Baby Food. Not necessary: Mangos, Papayas,

Broccoli, Cabbage, Bananas, Pineapple, Peas, Asparagus, Corn, Avocado and Onions. 6 I have no idea what chia seeds are but they are a leading hipster and millennial Superfood now, surpassing kale. I think they have something to do with the Chia Pet. 7. Cottage cheese is great for you. A cup has 30 grams of protein. Great food to start the day with. Mix in some tomatoes and wash it down with 8 ounces of V8 and you have my favorite meal!! I can hear you all saying “What? His FAVORITE meal? Yep, it really is! 8. I find that the thrill of having a new healthy lifestyle is more than enough to negate the need for much willpower. 9. Bloody Mary for sure. Mojitos have an enormous amount of glucose! And, you have a chance of getting a piece of celery which is like the holy grail for dieters. You burn more calories chewing it than it has in it!! 10. You guessed it my “healthy lifestyle hero Mark Teixara! Cut out sugar and hit 30 Homers by the first week in August!! 11. Not me, I am close though.. 9.02% 12. My wife, Eileen is close too... 8.2% 13. I have no idea. Please help if you know the answer to this!! 14. It was a great day (I guess I’m easy to please) when I discovered that my Vitamix heats (through the process of friction) and makes soup where smoothies were five minutes before. I love soup. 15 It’s fairly difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle and eat out. If you see something on the menu that appeals to you but has one or two ingredients that are verboten, ask them to make it without those ingredients. They will. (This doesn’t work at McDonalds... they would have to remove ALL the ingredients in everything they serve! 16. So just because they sell it in Trader Joe’s or GNC doesn’t mean it is good for you. READ THE LABELS!! 17. That’s one for the shrinks in the house. 18. I don’t remember what it tastes like.... But I do miss that taste!! Like McDonalds, nothing good in it!! 19. See answer for #18 20. Whale Tale Growing Oceanographers from Montauk detected a unique sonar reading off Long Island’s tip this past weekend. As far as they can tell, it seems to be from a lone ‘right whale’ off shore, but the whale song is more varied and detailed than any previously recorded. Local Rockaway Jetski proprietor Glenn DiResto claims to have had a close encounter, while leading a jet ski tour in the area, with an extraordinary multi-colored, shiny

creature. The scales seen here in his hand are almost identical to those that covered Rockaway’s beloved Whalemina, who disappeared during Hurricane Sandy. (This report came in via The Dragon Boat. Like The Facts column we went to press and were unable to verify. We have a guess, though, that a certain Whale will be making be making an appearance soon. Stay tuned).

Silicone vs. Caulk By Artie Wallace

BLT Baked Avocado By Sharon Feldman

Ingredients:

2 large avocados 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1-1/2 cups small cubed rustic bread (or brick oven whole wheat) 1 medium tomato, cored and cubed ½ cup finely chopped spinach leaves ¼ cup bacon, crumbled (I used 8 slices) 2 tablespoon mayo ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400 de-

grees. Baste inside avocado with lemon juice. Put halves on parchment paper on baking sheet. Mix together bread cubes, tomato, spinach leaves, bacon, mayo, salt and pepper. Fill each avocado slice with ¼ of the bread mixture. Bake 10-15 minutes. ++ You might find you have leftover bread stuffing. Put it in a lightly oiled dish and bake it alongside your avocado dish. Eat it with dinner or save it for tomorrow’s dinner, or just use it as a nosh!

Both silicone and caulk come in a variety of colors and grades. To go through them all would take some time, so we are going to focus on the main differences in the two. First off, silicone and caulk each have their own main use. Be sure to use the right one for the job. Silicone is a sealant and will not be paintable. Silicone will prevent water from leaking through the area sealed and will not mold as fast as caulk. Silicone is used to seal showers, tubs, windows and most areas where water may leak into. One trick for the non-professional using silicone is to first tape off the area with painter’s tape, leaving about a quarter inch on either side of the space you’re looking to seal. Apply the silicone along the space you’re looking to seal, and then wipe it in with your finger. Once the area is filled, remove the tape (be sure to remove the tape before the silicone dries). Repeat if needed. Caulk is more commonly used for painting. Caulk will not seal as well as silicone for water penetration. It is not mold resis-

tant and will crack over time if applied to large spaces. The best use for caulk is when you’re about to paint a room. Go around the room and look for spaces where the molding meets the walls, where the walls meet the ceiling, etc. Apply a generous amount of caulk to the area you’re looking to seal and run your finger over it giving it a smooth transition (example: between wall and molding), removing excess. Then wipe with a damp sponge to remove the remaining excess. As a rule of thumb, let the caulk dry overnight before painting. You will be amazed at how much better a room will look when you don’t have those little spaces around the moldings. There are different silicones and different caulks available, so if you’re not sure which one you need, don’t hesitate to ask someone in the store. Remember when working on your home, the only stupid question is one not asked. I want to hear from you, so tell me what you would like to read about in future DIYer articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@ gmail.com

AHOY ROCKAWAY !

Strong moon tides and HOT weather last weekend made fishing for the summer time flatties a bit tough, but Sunday was more comfortable than Saturday with cooler temperatures and less humidity. We hope that everyone got out to do some fishing last weekend. The fluke fishing has definitely slowed down recently in the Rockaway area. Remember how GREAT the fluke fishing was last year? This year does not compare to last year’s fluke bonanza, although the beginning of the 2015 fluke season started off well. On August 12, 2015 the Mid Atlantic Marine Fisheries Council will meet to discuss tightening of fluke fishing regula-

tions in the NY area for 2016. During the past three years, the fluke population has not been doing well according to Mid Atlantic Marine Fisheries Council (MAMFC). This is NOT due to “over fishing for fluke by anglers or commercial fishermen, but rather a spawning issue for the fish. Expect tighter fishing regulations on fluke next season. We had many reports this year of under-sized fluke (under 18 legal length) being thick and heavy before being returned to the water. It’s hard to throw a fish with fillets that thick back in the water, but the Rockaway Angler is a true sportsman, and would NEVER keep an under-sized fish! When-

ever in doubt if a fish is “in season, or under-sized, throw it back. Not only are you in compliance with the LAW, but you are protecting your favorite sport. At the bottom of EVERY Rockaway Times fishing report we provide our anglers with the NY state salt water fishing regulations web site address. You’ll always know what fish are in season, and what the size and catch limits are here in NY state. We checked in with our local stations, and here’s what they had to say. Bernie Matzen of Oceanside: Bern was on his usual jaunt drifting for fluke between Beach 8th Street and the Lido golf course (on the inside).

The Rockaway Times Bern kept coming up “short on Saturday and Sunday with undersized fish. He fished the tide between 8:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. and said that the back bay was heavy with seaweed. At first there were only about 10 boats out fishing the area. Boat traffic increased significantly by 2 p.m and Bern decided to call it a day. Bern mentioned that the striped bass have not shown up in the back bay yet. Big Ron’s Bait & Tackle: Ron’s reports that this week has been slow fluke fishing with the heat. Porgies are active, but the larger fish are still further to the east. The good news is that snappers (baby blue fish) are in and there is a limit on them. Tom’s Wave service station Bait and Tackle Rockaway Park: Tom reported a very quiet week probably due to the heat and the moon tides. The surf zone has been quiet, but there are bunker in the area. Tom reported that the outgoing moon tides were especially strong this week. Well there you have it anglers. Due to the high heat and the strong moon tides, there’s not a lot of activity going on except for snappers moving in. We’re hoping for a better report with bigger fish next week. To view what local species of fish are in season and what the size limit regulations are for them. Please go to dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7894.html

Community House Opens By Katie McFadden

The Community House is open! A few hundred people who attended a private opening on Saturday, August 1, were left in awe of the transformation of the space that was once the Irish Circle. The new gastropub, located at 101-19 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, has left a great first-impression. The restaurant/bar, owned by Kelley Brooke and the Joseph family, is donned with dark wood and varied leather and wood seating, giving it an elegant feel. Many were particularly enthralled with

the 3,000 sq-ft back deck area, covered by a retractable roof. This back bar area will be where musicians and DJs will play each weekend, including live band karaoke each Sunday. Several bands and musicians are already booked through November. The menu features a selection of small plates, handheld items and larger entrees, depending on your appetite. There are smaller items like hamburgers, a steak sandwich, various flatbreads, macaroni and cheese, calamari, wings and main dishes like marinated chick #FBDI UI 4U "SWFSOF /FX :PSL 'BS 3PDLBXBZ 1) ] '"9 POFUPVDIBVUP!HNBJM DPN

Bike Ride Adventures: Floyd Bennett Field Continued from page 6

those things didn’t belong, but the parade of 20 street sweepers that I had to dodge along the runway, showed me exactly where it was. Beyond the sanitation training center, I could see an old Air Force plane that I wanted to check out, but I couldn’t enter through the training center, and the hangar, where the plane hides behind, was closed off as it in undergoing renovations. When I saw two cars enter the hangar area through an open gate, I went with my adventurous instinct and followed them in. I got to see the Air Force plane and a Navy aircraft up close and got some great pictures. However, when I tried to leave the hangar area, I discovered that someone had locked the gates behind me. I was trapped in an area I technically wasn’t supposed to be in and thought my adventure would end up in a Park Police jail cell. Thankfully, the cars that I had followed in, came back to exit the area, just a few minutes later, and a man opened the gate for me, without reprimanding me. Phew! My adventure commenced and I got to see the camping area where people are welcome to bring a tent and stay for just $30 a night; a smart alternative to a $200 ho-

tel room in Manhattan. I also saw the boat ramp, where some people were launching kayaks. Further down the road, I found another kayak launch site and fishing spot, where I stopped to dip my feet in the water. The spot overlooks Mill Basin and an elevated portion of the Belt Parkway, but the scenery was beautiful. Half a dozen people were there, just taking in the view and a lone fisherman seemed to be doing pretty well with his catches. The kayak launch site is one of many in the area, where people are welcome to launch their own, or participate in a NPS-lead kayaking program, which I hear are quite popular. Down another runway, I finally found the Remote Control Airplane Flying Field. I remembered my father bringing me here one time when I was a kid and the sky was filled with miniature airplanes, gliding and performing tricks. I didn’t expect anyone to be there in the middle of a Tuesday, but I found a few people hanging out in the area, with their airplanes perched and ready for takeoff. Unfortunately, they were taking a break and I didn’t get to see one fly, but my eyes did deceive me when a seagull passed by, and an actual airplane was landing at JFK airport, off in the distance. I had found what I was looking for, plus much more and I was ready to go home. However I made just one last stop at the Ryan Visitor Center to get some answers to some questions I had. The air conditioned building, which used to serve as a terminal for the airport, was a nice relief from the heat, and I was greeted by a friendly woman who answered my questions, explained some of the history, and told me about some of the programs that take place in the area. Rockaway Little League Finishes Year On ESPN To put an amazing cap on an outstanding 2015 season, Rockaway Little League was selected to represent Little League Baseball on last Sunday’s broadcast of Baseball Tonight. Thirteen boys were interviewed live on television by ESPN’s Nicole Briscoe and the Mets’ Curtis Granderson. They stayed to watch the Mets defeat the Washington Nationals 5-2 and claim a share of first place. ESPN sent a bus to pick up the boys and six chaperones at P.S. 114. The group arrived early to watch batting practice on the field at Citi Field. Mets’ players Granderson, Wilmer Flores, Ruben Tejada, Michael Conforto, Eric Campbell and Juan Uribe stopped by to sign autographs and talk baseball. Ian Byrne scored more than just a signature. Flores, everyone’s new favorite Met, gave Ian his bat as a souvenir. The team, who represented RLL’s Major Boys division, was interviewed from the Mets’ dugout. After the pre-game activities, the Rockaway contingent was escorted to field-level seats down the right field line. From that vantage point, they saw the Mets crush three home runs to the Pepsi Porch in a fivepitch span of the third inning. Noah Syndergaard did the rest, blowing away the Nationals’ sluggers. The crowd was widely acknowledged as the best ever to attend a game at

Citi Field. Rockaway’s boys joined right in, cheering on the Mets lustily (even if some were Yankee fans). The lucky Rockaway Little Leaguers were: James Resker, Tom Resker, Mikey McManus, Philly Benoit, Ian Byrne, Jason Sebastiano, Daniel Green, Billy Reyes, James Tuohey, Colin Byrne, Matty McDonagh, Corey Schwach, Zach Erhard.

Nothing Half Bass About This

Matt Whalen of the Fishing Report sends us photos each week of fishermen (fisher people) and their amazing catches. Rarely do they

reveal exactly where the fish were caught but rest assured this huge striped bass was caught in local waters.
