ST. JOHN'S HOSPITAL SEEKS DONATIONS FOR WOMEN'S HEALTH CENTER St. John’s Episcopal Hospital (SJEH) is seeking donations to go towards the purchase of equipment for its new Women’s Health Center that is scheduled to open in 2021 at 105-38 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. SJEH intended to raise funds at its annual golf event that was to occur this summer, but the event was canceled because of the pandemic. The hospital is accepting donations on its website, ehs.org/givenow, and is running a series of
fundraisers via social media and email. “We invite anyone to make a donation on the website, Director of Foundation Nancy Leghart, said. “Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and will go directly toward purchasing essential, life-saving equipment. The Women’s Health Center will be located in the Rockaway Beach Medical Arts Complex which opened one year ago. The
Center will provide gynecological and obstetrical services, maternal fetal medicine, urogynecology, gynecological oncology, breast surgery, nutrition, behavioral health, 3D mammography, bone density, and ultrasound in one location. Donations will support the purchase of stateof-the-art equipment including: A 3D mammography machine which allows physicians to see breast tissue details more clearly to uncover breast cancer that
may have otherwise been hidden by overlying breast tissue; A bone density machine to measure women’s bone density to diagnose for osteoporosis and provide a fracture risk assessment; and an ultrasound machine that produces high-resolution image quality. The Center will enhance access to women’s health services in the Rockaways while helping women achieve and maintain optimal health.

Covid Testing At the Ferry Dock
Assemblywoman Stacey Amato recently promoted free COVID-19 testing at the ferry dock located at Beach 108th Street in Rockaway Park. The testing was sponsored by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (NYC Health+Hospitals). Amato volunteered in support of the site by giving out flyers informing and encouraging residents to get tested. “Since March, I’ve advocated
for additional COVID testing in South Queens specifically Rockaway due to our geographic isolation from the rest of the city and lack of public transit options,” Amato said. “I am happy to report that NYC Health and Hospitals stepped up to the plate to provide this vital resource for my constituents and encourage those who are experiencing symptoms to get tested.” Testing at the ferry site continues through Friday, August 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. NYC Health + Hospitals offers additional testing at 39-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard and at d at the Sorrentino Recreation Center, 18-48 Cornaga Avenue in Far Rockaway. Both sites are open Monday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., no appointments necessary.
Got Out of State Visitors Coming? CHECKPOINTS STARTING Mayor Bill de Blasio announced COVID-19 traveler registration checkpoints at key entry points into New York City to ensure compliance with New York State quarantine requirements and further the containment of COVID-19. Travelers who have visited 35 designated states or territories with high COVID-19 transmission rates are required to complete the New York State Department of Health traveler form and quarantine for a period of 14 days upon entering NYC. The DOF Sheriff ’s Office, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, will operate traveler registration checkpoints at major bridge and tunnel crossings into NYC. Starting Thursday, August 6, the Mayor's Public Engagement Unit will begin outreach at Penn Station to educate travelers about New York State home-quarantine orders. Travelers coming in from these states must complete travel health forms to support contact tracing efforts.
Non-essential workers subject to the State’s travel quarantine must: Stay at their residence or in a hotel room, leaving only for essential medical appointments or treatment or to obtain food and other essential goods when the delivery of food or other essential goods to their residence or hotel is not feasible; Not invite or allow guests, other than caregivers, into their quarantined residence or hotel room; and self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and seek appropriate medical advice or testing if COVID-19 symptoms arise. Essential workers subject to the State’s quarantine must: Self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and self-quarantine and seek medical advice or testing if they show symptoms of COVID-19. Failure to quarantine is a violation of State law, and subject to a $10,000 fine. Individuals who refuse to fill out the NYS Department of Health travel form are subject to a $2,000 fine

Parking issues took center stage of the 100th Precinct Community Council’s latest monthly meeting. On Wednesday, July 29, about 50 people tuned in on Zoom to find out what the 100th Precinct is doing to tackle illegal parking problems around the peninsula. Council President Kathy Heavey kicked off the meeting with some updates. She said that a memorial will be held for all of those who died from Covid-19, likely at 6 p.m. on August 21, but details are still being worked out. National Night Out Against Crime has been rescheduled for October 5. Heavey explained that it will be a small event this year due to the pandemic. Lastly, Heavey announced that longtime board member of the Council, Sandy Jones, has retired. “I want to thank Sandy for the many hours of service she’s done for the community,” Heavey said. She then announced that Keisha Cunningham, will assume the role of corresponding secretary. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato was on hand to swear Cunningham into the position during the meeting. Pheffer Amato briefly touched upon the parking issues and encouraged people to keep calling 311. “The beaches are busy because there’s nowhere for families to go. But it doesn’t give an excuse to park illegally or make it unsafe, if God forbid there’s an emergency anywhere on
the peninsula and hydrants are blocked, or pathways onto the boardwalk are blocked. People are parking in people’s driveways and on the sidewalks, that’s unacceptable,” she said. She also advised that locals abide by parking rules as well. “The more we ask for traffic agents, we cannot control who gets ticketed. I know there was ticketing done at St. Francis this week during Mass, but we’re asking for help, so we all have to abide by the rules. Pull into your driveways, don’t park on white lines, just follow the rules of parking,” Pheffer Amato said. The meeting then featured special guests Lorraine and Laura Baker, two local educators who spoke about the challenges of teaching virtually during the pandemic. 100th Precinct Captain Louron Hall then addressed the parking issues directly. Before getting into it, he took time to thank the community for the recent wave of support including dropping off meals and goodies to the precinct, the NYPD support plane that has been flying over the beach this summer and the pro-police march that took place last month. “I just want to thank you whole heartedly from the 100th Precinct,” he said. On parking, Captain Hall made one thing clear: “We’re not going to tolerate illegal parking.” However, he believes the issues will continue. “Until the city opens up in a larger fashion Continued on page 7

100TH PRECINCT TACKLES PARKING PROBLEMS Continued from Page 6 and gives people other options, we’re still going to see this problem.” But the NYPD is doing what it can to send a message. On the weekend of July 25 and 26, Hall says the precinct wrote 270 summonses for illegal parking. The main focus of this was the confusing area along the southside of Shore Front Parkway, where unclear signage and lanes lead many to think it is legal parking. Hall addressed this saying that in a recent email from Community Board 14 to the Department of Transportation, asking the agency to address this issue, the DOT doesn’t see a problem. “It doesn’t appear DOT is going to come out to put lines in that lane to make it known to people who are not from this community that you truly cannot park there,” Hall said. Last weekend, 165 summonses were given in that area alone. Another 75 were given on streets above Beach 116th Street, and another 30
THURSDAY, AUGUST 6, 2020 east of Beach 94th Street. Hall said this was done by eight traffic agents, one supervisor and a few other officers assigned to the beach area. During the prior weekend of July 18 and 19, the precinct gave out 385 summonses. This included 129 along Shore Front, 181 uptown and 75 in other areas. “Parking enforcement has been robust for the previous two weekends and we plan to continue that,” Hall said. In some instances where cars are blocking emergency areas or driveways last weekend, 38 vehicles were towed. A few guests, including Liz Hanna, suggested booting cars as a way to send a message that some areas are not meant for parking, as when cars are towed, another comes along to takes its spot. Hall said that he would look into this possibility, but the main goal is to remove vehicles from illegal spots so that they do not block emergency pathways to the beach, but booting is something that could be considered in other areas, such as under Rockaway Freeway.

***** So, there was some weather on Tuesday. A tornado warning caused the Staten Island Ferry service to be suspended. NYC Ferry service was suspended. Downed trees caused the MTA to stop service on the A line. The Verrazano Bridges was closed to all traffic. A kiddie pool in Rockaway Beach went airborne and got stuck in wires over the street. And as of press time, some residents, throughout Rockaway, were still without power. ***** And as the storm caused havoc throughout Rockaway we were reminded how it will soon be eight years since Sandy. All together now: The jetties are coming, the jetties are coming. So glad they were fast-tracked! *****
The Finals for The Rockaway Times Photo Contest will be Friday, August 7 and will be featured on Facebook Live, hosted by John Cori. Check out the Friends of Rockaway Beach page at 5 p.m. to watch it unfold. There are 10 finalists and each of the ten have a good shot at the Grand Prize of $500. We will have the results in next week’s paper. The contest is fun and makes Rockaway look even more beautiful. Thanks to all who submitted: you helped make it great! ***** In June on the boardwalk, a police officer was suspended for using a chokehold on a suspect, while attempting to arrest the man who was allegedly threatening officers at the scene. Although charges were dropped against Ricky Bellevue for that incident, he has been arrested twice since, the most recent for allegedly robbing a teenage girl on the A train at Beach 44 St. station in Far Rockaway. After the June incident, Bellevue said
The Rockaway Times
he suffers from a bipolar disorder. ***** Off the beaten path somewhat is Bayfield Avenue which runs parallel to the bay in Arverne. A couple of vacant lots won’t be vacant much longer apparently as permits have been filed residential buildings at 69-26 and 69-28 Bayfield Avenue. ***** But the lovely view in Arverne might come with a surprise. Residents in the area have complained about mosquitoes being worse than usual. (Sometimes you’ll see people just putting out the trash while wearing full head and face coverings). The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene plans to conduct spraying soon and they say eliminated nearly 200,000 mosquitoes using traps. ***** If you’re interested in getting free Covid testing you can go to the following: The Sorrentino Rec Center at 18-
48 Cornaga Avenue, Monday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. No appointments necessary and to Beach 39th, 39-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Monday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. No appointments necessary. The actual test only takes less than a couple of minutes. ***** Have you done your civic duty? Please go to https:// my2020census.gov/ and complete the census questionnaire. The 2020 Census will be used to determine the number of seats each state has in Congress and your political representation at all levels of government. So far, New York has a response rate of 54% while the national rate is 63%. New York is going to need money and representation to help climb out of the financial hole made worse by the pandemic. ***** There might be record unemployment, but The Rockaway Beach Hotel is hiring. Locals Seek Justice After Dog Killed in Hit & Run By Katie McFadden
“My heart hurts. I just feel numb,” local resident Alen Guzman said a few days after an incident in which a hit-and-run driver killed his beloved dog, Jada, and nearly killed Guzman. On the night of Friday, July 31, Guzman had just gotten off of work and was taking his two dogs for a walk around 11 p.m. as he does each night. However, that routine walk turned to tragedy. He was crossing Shore Front Parkway by Beach 96th Street when a driver hit him and his dog. “I saw the car by the light. I was in the crosswalk and I had time to make it across. Then I heard the engine run. My one dog was in front of me and I went to grab the other dog to help her across the street a little faster. This driver sped. They hit the gas. Next thing I know, I saw my dog in the air and I started Alen with his dog, Jada (right) screaming and running toward her. I don’t even remember being hit myself. She was still alive. of about 20 feet, almost to 97th an and I was trying to comfort She flew in the air at a distance Street. She crawled to the medi- her. I couldn’t do anything, and I
felt helpless. My own pain wasn’t even a concern at that moment, I just needed help for my dog,” Guzman recalled. As EMTs arrived to treat Guzman and put him on a stretcher, and concerned neighbors crowded the scene, Jada took her final breath. Guzman was taken to a hospital to be treated for his own injuries, which he believes were caused by the driver’s sideview mirror and bumper hitting him in the leg. “I got x-rays and don’t have any broken bones but I’m still limping. He hit me in the side of the hip and ankle really bad,” he said. The driver never stopped. According to witnesses, the driver of what is believed to be a silver/ gray Nissan Sentra quickly turned on to Beach 97th Street, heading down the block in the wrong direction. As they sped down the block, the driver allegedly struck other vehicles and almost hit another boy on a bike. “Any human with a soul would Continued on page 12

LOCALS SEEK JUSTICE Continued from Page 11 have stopped. That’s what a human does, not a monster who just runs away and thinks everything is fine, Guzman said. “I just want this driver to get caught. I don’t want money, I don’t want to sue them. I just want them to understand that what they did was wrong, so they don’t do it again. There should be repercussions. As Guzman recovers and deals with the sudden loss of his dog, friends, family and the community have come together to try to help get some justice. However, he feels not enough is being done. “The NYPD has all these things going on lately, so we’ve been doing our own work. I’ve been calling the detective and asking what’s going on and it goes right to voicemail. I understand there’s a lot for them to focus on, but I could’ve gotten killed and there was another kid that almost got run over. I’m thankful no human got hurt worse, but it’s not fair for this person who did this to be out there, not dealing with the consequences, Guzman said. Outraged over what happened
to his cousin, James Miraglia has been trying to assist Guzman in any way. Miraglia says he’s seen situations before in which a friend’s mother was killed by a hit-and-run driver, coincidentally with a similar car, and justice wasn’t served. “Nothing ever came of it, Miraglia said. Not wanting to see a repeat, Miraglia has been actively helping Guzman compile evidence. Miraglia says they’ve done a lot of legwork, from knocking on neighbors’ doors to interview them and get eyewitness accounts and video footage, to even identifying the car used in the accident and with the help of tips, locating what they believe to be the car at an autobody shop in mainland Queens within a day of the incident. “We went to check it out. There’s still hair from my dog stuck in the grill of the car, Guzman said. Guzman and Miraglia say the community has been more than helpful in their endeavor to obtain information and Guzman says neighbors have been a good source of moral support during a difficult time. “This has really shown me a different side of the

but nothing is being done. It’s incredibly disheartening. Miraglia says if the investigation doesn’t move forward in a reasonable amount of time, they’ll consider bringing it directly to the attention of Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “We’re just really trying to make sure that not only does the family gain some closure, but that this isn’t some homicidal maniac out there who does this for fun. We just want justice to be served and to instill some peace in this community, Miraglia. In the meantime, Miraglia and his wife have set up a GoFundMe account to help Guzman raise money to cover the cremation costs for Jada and some of his hospital bills as Guzman does not have insurance. To donate, head to: www.gofundme.com/f/ medical-expenses-and-funeral-expenses-for-jada They’re also asking that if anyone has any other footage or information about the incident, to call the 100th Precinct Detective Squad at 718-318-4200 (Press 2 for detective squad).

community and has made me feel like I’m part of this family although I’m fairly new to this side of Rockaway. It’s brought a bit of comfort with people trying to get information and their outpouring of support. The community has really backed me up, but the detectives aren’t doing anything, Guzman said. Despite having evidence, Guzman and Miraglia believe the police have not been very proactive in the case. “A lot of this stuff I obtained without the police confirming it and nothing can really be done until they do. We’re not trying to instigate anything or tell the police how to do their jobs. We get that they’re overwhelmed, we know they have their hands full, that they’re not doing much overtime now and are prioritizing other cases, but are we just going to wait until someone is killed? My cousin was almost killed, Miraglia said. “This was an attempted homicide and after doing all of the work we’ve done, to even finding a potential location of the vehicle, what is it going to take for this to move proactively? We’re doing their homework for them,

Isaias Was Anything But a Breeze Well, Isaias sure made an impression. The tropical storm arrived late morning on Tuesday, August 4, bringing heavy winds which made trees look like popsicle sticks in some areas of the peninsula and Broad Channel and left many without power. Tropical Storm Isaias lasted only a few hours but left a big footprint. Wind gusts recorded at nearby JFK Airport reached up to 70 mph, and it was noticed. The heavy winds topped large trees across the peninsula, blocking roads and even damaging some cars. In Jamai-
ca, Queens, one man was killed by a falling tree while sitting in his car. Late Tuesday and Wednesday, Department of Sanitation and NYC Parks vehicles were hard at work removing what was left of some of the downed trees. Some buildings also saw some damage as awnings fell from stores, scaffolding came apart and some furniture flew off of rooftops sand balconies. In a rare sight, an inflatable kiddie pool even blew into power lines above Beach 99th Street. Within a short time, FDNY responded to free

the pool. Transportation was impacted as NYC Ferry service was suspended mid-day and later A train service to and from Rockaway was disrupted due to fallen debris on the tracks in Broad Channel. Broad Channel also saw uprooted trees on Cross Bay Boulevard and even a boat and jet ski became loose from their moorings. However, as the storm hit mostly during low tide, Broad Channel and Rockaway did not see flooding. Most of Rockaway was spared from power outages, but some
were not. Following the storm, PSEGLI was dealing with more than 320,000 outages across Long Island and parts of Rockaway. As we go to press, the PSEGLI website indicated that more than 4,600 customers in Rockaway were still seeing outages on Wednesday morning. Some customers were told service would not be restored until Thursday or even Friday as the company tried to keep up with repairs. Photos by Katie McFadden, Theresa Racine and Elizabeth Hanna.

Dune Dunces Dear Editor: When I turned to page 3 of the July 20th edition of your paper and looked at the photos of beach goers happily destroying the sand dunes meant to protect, as much as possible, the beach and inland property from inundation the first thing that came to mind was Albert Einstein’s comment, “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.” Sadly, he is so correct. If anything, these photos reveal an example of human stupidity that questions the
scientific nomenclature of the term, Homo sapiens (wise man). There is no acceptable reason for what these people are doing. To “get away from the crowds” is no reason to destroy protective structures meant to protect others. Perhaps, they have no idea why dunes are important, but one would think that the Sandy Storm Flood should have been enough to at least prompt some interest in their function as natural walls to protect the beach and beyond from storm surges. Dunes are not meant for picnicking and playing at high levels and those who do not give a hoot about dunes should be reminded that we are, once again, in hurricane season. Be prepared. Stephen Yaeger
terrible roads we seem to be cursed to drive. Or the walking dead homeless that have been forced upon us. But another issue of mine is the extreme cyclists. I despise these people. They act like they have the right of way in every situation. All dressed up in their goofy skin tight bright yellow gear. All pretending that what they’re doing is equivalent to curing cancer. I had enough. I had one today ride up the beach ramp of Beach 122nd Street with
Page 15 maybe an inch between us. I said, “there’s a saying, its Excuse ME.” The extremist waited ‘til he was about a half a block away and then started talking trash on his way downtown. This is at 7Am. I’m tired of seeing these people traveling 20 mph down the boardwalk. This hobby should be in a controlled area. Is there a way to start a petition or a to get rid of these bicyclists in Rockaway? Thanks for listening. Brian Ward

I had most of these staples in the house. Trying to use what I have so I’m not out and about too often. Ingredients: 1 tablespoon EACH dried parsley, dried rosemary, dried parsley and dried oregano 2 pounds chicken pieces 1 medium onion, chopped 2 small carrots cut into ½â€? pieces ½ bag of frozen peas (or fresh) 1 -package sliced mushrooms 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 – 14-1/2 ounce can peeled whole tomatoes, drained and chopped Small can of tomato puree 1-2 tablespoons of tomato paste Salt, pepper to taste
The Rockaway Times **Hot pepper flakes, optional Directions: Spray crockpot with oil or butter. Add the carrots and onions. Sprinkle a little salt over them and mix. Season the chicken with all the seasonings and place on top of vegetables. In a medium bowl, mix the tomatoes, tomato puree and tomato paste together. Then pour mixture in and top the chicken with the mushrooms; cover. Cook on high heat for 4 hours Add the peas and replace cover for another 20 minutes or ½ hour. Taste the sauce. Add a little hot pepper flakes for a bit of a kick. I served this over mashed potatoes. Sometimes I use mashed cauliflower or pearl couscous. Enjoy.

Summer Classic Roundup With Isaias blowing through and cancelling Tuesday night's games, we can now take stock of where we are after two weeks plus. Jameson's is hoping to replicate UConn's double championships in Men's and Women's Open play. The women won spirited contests against Boardwalk Pizza and Team CUNY to claim the top spot at the halfway point. Meanwhile the men are taking advantage of a favorable schedule to remain undefeated, along with Kennedy's, who have the look of a juggernaut. The two undefeateds are not scheduled against each other in the regular season. Nicole Frontera Beauty and NYBS Mechanical are the Girls High School leaders. They have split two games against each other while winning all others. Mullin Basketball Camp defeated Chelsea Irish on Monday in a battle of undefeateds to take control in Boys High School. Playoffs
begin on Wednesday for the High School divisions, and Thursday for the Open divisions, who will also play their Isaias rescheduled games on Sunday night. Boys and Girls Grammar School divisions began on Friday, July 31 and the younger 5:45 divisions on Monday, August 3. After clearing an initial two-week trial period, we are now able to admit one parent with each child for the grammar school divisions. The parent must wear

a mask, watch from a designated area six feet behind the team bleachers, and can only enter when the player enters.
We have also been monitoring the health of all players, and are happy to report no health issues for the twelve Men's, six Women's, nine Boys High School and four Girls High School teams after two weeks of play. The Men, Women, and High School divisions will continue to dominate the schedule over the next two weeks before shifting to Grammar School play in late August and early September. Games are in the SFDS schoolyard Monday through Friday. Come on over and MASK UP to enjoy the St. Francis Summer Classic.

The Learning of the Twitter Breach ByB yGille G i l lAnn e A nRabbin, n R a b bEsq., i n , ECIPP/US, s q . , C I PCIPP/E P/US
Last month Twitter reported that it suffered a data security breach at the hands of hackers. While the details of the hack are still unclear, Twitter has stated that through “a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted . . . employees with access to internal systems and tools,” hackers duped employees into handing over administrative access privileges. This enabled hackers to take over high-profile accounts; 130 accounts, including those of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk were compromised. Of these, hackers accessed the direct messaging of 36 accounts and sent tweets from them. The fraudulent tweets stated that bitcoin sent to the bitcoin wallet included in the tweet would be doubled and
returned to the sender. About 400 victims sent approximately $120,000. The full extent of the breach is still unknown. The media has reported that some cybersecurity experts are concerned that the bitcoin scam may be masking a vast breach involving the personal communications of the world’s most powerful people. Investigations are ongoing. The breach puts companies of all sizes on notice that even in our present climate, when there is so much to be concerned about, all businesses should be making cybersecurity and information handling a priority. In spite of the fact that we’re in the midst of a pandemic and the economy and many businesses have been battered, sound information privacy practices, such as employee training (the significance of which the Twitter breach illustrates), vendor policies and monitoring, privacy best practices,
and appropriate cybersecurity measures are critical. These are especially important in our heavily remote working environment, where workers may be more distracted than usual or working via computers that are not adequately secure. Many companies still believe that these are backburner issues. However, the constant parade of data breaches and the continued rapid development of privacy laws demonstrate otherwise. A recent study by data privacy protection platform Osano reports that companies of all sizes that have poor privacy practices are 80% more likely to experience a data breach. According to the report, the highest number of data breaches were from hacker attacks (approximately 85%) and “inside jobs” (approximately 6.7%; most but not all occurred in the financial sector) which occur, for example, by or with the assistance
of employees. Other types of data breaches (inadvertent disclosure, lost device, etc.) constituted 1% each. Governments are most likely to be breached, and government and education websites are many more times likely to experience a breach than commercial websites. In addition to being aware that they could be vulnerable to a data breach, companies both large and small should be cognizant of the fact that there are federal and state privacy and data security laws that are applicable to them. Lack of compliance can lead to regulatory investigations and fines, consumer lawsuits, bad publicity, and loss of consumer confidence and clientele. Businesses of all sizes should consult with privacy professionals to evaluate their privacy practices and fulfill their data privacy and data security compliance obligations.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Worse Than A Bark Humans are bitten by other humans and animals, especially dogs, quite often. Dog bites are estimated to cause tens of millions of injuries around the world every year. Children are at greater risk of dog bites, especially to the head and/ or neck. Head and neck bites in children can cause more severe injury and death. Infection is the most important complication of bite wounds, but dog bite wounds and human bite wounds are treated differently. Human bites are considered
more serious and more likely to become infected than animal bites because the human mouth contains over 50 types of bacteria. One third of hand infections are caused by bite wounds. A bite where the skin is broken is called an occlusion bite. Closed fist injuries, where the closed fist is used to punch a person, are more serious because the closed fist may strike bone and/or teeth and the knuckles may be involved. If the knuckle becomes infected, the infection may spread rapidly via nerves and
tendons located in the knuckle. Evidence that a hand or leg infection is spreading may include lymphangitis, previously called blood poisoning, where a red line appears and heads towards the groin or armpit, and lymphadenitis, where painful lumps appear in the groin or armpit on the affected side. Human bites should be flushed with a povidone iodine 1% solution (Betadine) followed by copious amounts of saline (salt water) and removal of any fragments like chips of teeth. Hand wounds from human bites are considered to be infected, and, should sutures be needed, they are not placed, and the wound is usually left open. Suturing an infected wound will cause an abscess to form. Antibiotics are almost always prescribed for human bite wounds. Dog bites should be cleaned with soap and water, then flushed with large amounts of fresh water. A tetanus injection should be given if it is not up to date. The bite should be reported to the authorities
Page 25 and, if possible, the dog owner should be queried about the dog’s vaccination status, especially for rabies. Open animal bites should be evaluated by a medical professional because of the risk of infection. Like human bites, animal bites on the hand are at especially high risk of infection and antibiotics are usually prescribed for animal bites of the hand. Animal bites to other areas of the body may require antibiotics if there are signs of infection like fever, swelling, or redness. To prevent dog bites, avoid unfamiliar dogs. Do not disturb dogs that are sleeping or eating. Make sure small children are supervised if playing with a dog. Lastly, if you are approached by a dog you do not know, leave the area slowly. Avoid making loud noises or running away. For more information go to: www.cdc.gov/features/ dog-bite-prevention/index. html Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

The Song in your Heart Our heart is at the center of our being human. In the heart is where our deepest thoughts, intuitions, emotions and decisions find their source. We often fail to know our hidden centers and so we live and die without knowing who we really are. Have you ever looked into the mirror and asked yourself, “who am I? You are not the body, you are not your mind, you are not your title such as wife, husband, mother, father, sister,
brother, friend, etc. You are so much more. This past weekend, I picked up one my favorite books, “How, Then, Shall We Live by Wayne Muller. The first question he asked was, who am I? The past few months have given us all time to get to know ourselves and perhaps work on some positive changes in our life. The here and now is real. This moment in time will never come again. How can we, living in today’s society, find our quiet center,
leading to the song in your heart? Is it possible in New York City to be relaxed and calm? I think it is a challenge but most certainly possible. We live in one of the greatest cities although these days we have most definitely loss control of a peaceful society. Our struggles are real to find peace and calm. The only way I can find the calm amid the storm is to close my eyes to my surroundings. Focus on a mantra and my breath. Breathing in, I am calm, breathing out, I am at peace. It works every time for me so I repeat it often. Then I open my eyes to the beauty in front of me. If I were an artist, I would paint a picture; if I were a photographer, I would take a picture; if I am me, I would breathe it all in. My song is by the ocean. I have always gone to the water for comfort and peace. Water is healing and we are blessed to live in this community. Yes, we are a beautiful community. I am so grateful for my parents bringing us to Rockaway Beach for summer vacations. This summer, many
The Rockaway Times people have visited Rockaway Beach and truly found a source of harmony in this chaotic world. What is your song? Are you afraid to be who you were meant to be? Is there something or someone holding you back? Finding your song is finding your love with yourself. You don’t have to change your life, you just have to be with yourself. You are perfect just the way you are. You are enough and your heart is your guide. The heart is a masterpiece. It has a subtle energy that vibrates loudly. We feel and hear the soft beat but it is an instrument that plays our life’s song. Listen, feel and be with yourself. Mary Oliver: “Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? Life is brief, even if we live to 100 years old. May you be happy, be content and be healthy. God has been very good to me and I wish you the same.

Life With Our “Artistic Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Laugh Amidst The Madness Greetings Rockaway Times Readers! It’s been quite a spell since I have contributed my column to Rockaway’s newsiest. Well, blame it on fugue because since March, f-u-g-u-e became my f-o-o-d (note both words phonetically sound the same) when planet Earth devolved into “Counter-Earth, which I also refer to as Alice-In-Wonderland version 20.20. Between coro-
na (not the beer, but the blasted pandemic), remote school learning, protests, lootings, shootings and well, not knowing if alternate parking is indeed back in effect—I enveloped myself in a dissociative fugue state, content with hiding in my house, hanging up on social media, and instead warring with the mad hatters in my house. And during that period, my nonverbal daugh-

ter with autism and I communicated more than we ever had. I began to refer to her as my Cheshire Cat because she seemed to have some divine knowledge of the workings of Counter-Earth because she intuitively knew that just like Wonderland, it was mad! Like Alice, I felt stuck. As the news blared out every day with numbers, percentages, curves, I would listlessly just stare, barely retaining what these masters of our fate were enumerating. I envied my daughter, completely immune to the pandemonium happening outside. After all, she knew it was and still is all madness. So instead, she dutifully distracts us by orchestrating her own pandemonium with mischievous shenanigans such as emptying an entire bag of rice flour on her bed, shredding a whole loaf of bread into confetti and running up and down the house blaring her favorite K-Pop songs—all to my grandmother’s delight. Then as the months went by and the environment be-
came so volatile, where even thinking an opinion became a capital offense (think British comedian Ricky Gervais’ stance on cancel culture), I drifted further into a fugue state, thinking that the world was going mad, or I was. (Excerpt from Alice in Wonderland): “And how do you know that you're mad?" "To begin with," said the Cat, "a dog's not mad. You grant that?" "I suppose so," said Alice. "Well, then," the Cat went on, "you see a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad. Now before you think to yourself, Kami is falling off her rocker, think of it in these terms. We all have to co-exist in this new normal, which you have to admit is like living in the mad world of Alice’s Wonderland. However, like Alice, Continued on page 31

LIFE WITH OUR “ARTISTIC” CHILD Continued from Page 27 let our Cheshire Cats guide and provoke us to think within. My daughter makes me laugh every day, and though she’s nonverbal, she inspires me every day with her cunning nature. As Proverbs tells us, “a merry heart does good, like medicine.” And folks in these times, we need all the medicine we can get. The first place I tap? My daughter. These past few months have been tough with school’s remote learning, worried about her falling behind with her studies and what the fall will bring in terms of remote, in-person or a hybrid of both. However, folks, know that we’re blessed to have our special children who fill us with laughter and joy, and are shining examples that we don’t have to follow the crowd. Next week’s column: All parents worry about how their children will live and thrive in adulthood. However,
for parents who have children with special needs, those concerns are all the more pressing as we worry about how our children will be financially taken care of when we’re no longer around. In my next column, Christopher Carrieri, a manager of Financial Services at Prudential Financial, breaks down why setting up a Special-Needs Trust is absolutely critical. This is a cause dear to Christopher’s heart as he has a sister with special needs and witnessed firsthand the trials and tribulations his parents went through before they finally were able to get their daughter on the right financial track. Christopher will also be speaking and fielding questions on this topic at the next Rockaway Beach Autism Families meeting. Date TBA. For more info, visit Rockaway Beach Autism Families on Facebook or email: kami@ rockawaybeachautismfamilies.org. “Join us in turning the tide for our autism community, one wave at a time.”

WrestleTalk QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS II By Eric Jayden
In this edition of WrestleTalk, we will be answering questions I receive from fans on a weekly basis. The first question of the week comes from Mike Z. in Rockaway Beach and he asked, "What does Kayfabe mean in wrestling?" Kayfabe was the word used to protect the inner workings, matches and production of professional wrestling. Although the meaning of the word is assumed dead, it is very much alive in the industry. The second question of the week comes from Daniel H. in Bayswater and he asked, "How much does a professional wrestler make?" A professional wrestler starting off in the independence scene can make anywhere from $30 to $50 per match. Once, he/she has established a good reputation and work resumes, they
have the potential of making $50 to $150 per match. If the wrestler gets signed to a contract to a major wrestling company, then they have the potential of making $100,000 and up. Wrestlers also make additional income through merchandise sales. The third question of the week comes from Susan A. in Belle Harbor and she asked, "Is professional wrestling regu-
lated?" That's a good question Susan. In New York State professional wrestling is regulated by the New York State Athletic Commission and also throughout many other states. But there are states that do not regulate professional wrestling as they consider it a Performance Art and not a Combat Sport. In some states, professional wrestlers have to be licensed to perform.
The final question of the week comes from Adam C. in Breezy Point and he asked, "Is wrestling fake?" Okay, Adam, I have been asked this question numerous times and all I can tell you is that the outcome of a professional wrestling match is predetermined. What we do inside the ring is very much real. It takes years of training and dedication to perform the moves and take the falls inside a professional wrestling ring. That's all I would say about that. I want to thank all the readers of the Rockaway Times and my family for your support. Without you guys I would not be living my dream as a professional wrestler and writer. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy Have a great week!
