More discussions will take place in the future regarding the use of the parkland, but NPOA President Amanda Agoglia spoke of some of the ideas the Association would prefer to see. “We’d like to see a nice, passive park, something with a playground for children, a dog walk, a peaceful walking area, a sitting area and perhaps a pickle ball court. Basically, something the community can use that’s not go ing to create a lot of noise for those who live right next to it. We’d also like to see a row of dense trees and shrubs on the east side to buffer the sound for those homeowners, and a nice fence lined with trees on the southside, adjacent to Bay 1 so the beachgoers there are offered priva cy to enjoy sunbathing,” she said.

Neponsit Home Demolition Deadline Approaches

Construction will take place weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Noisy activities will take place af ter 9 a.m. There will be security on site 24/7 and an eight-foot fence will be placed around the property. To minimize effects, there will be emissions and vibration monitor ing and mitigation plus dust, noise and rodent monitoring and mitiga tion. Sound absorption materials will be placed on the east side to minimize noise levels for neighbor ing homes. Cleaning of construc tion debris will take place on the roadway next to the site. The Q22/ Q35 bus stop in front of the site will be temporarily moved east. Councilwoman Joann Ariola was at the meeting and said she would ensure there is transparency and oversight during the entire process.

The plan to demolish the old Nep onsit Home is moving full steam ahead. As work is expected to be gin sometime after Labor Day, the Neponsit Property Owners Associ ation held a meeting Tuesday, Au gust 30 with the agencies involved to hear the latest information be fore the process begins. The long abandoned Neponsit Home site near Beach 149th Street is slated to come down. Closed since 1998, the buildings have de teriorated into a point of disrepair.

The Community Liaison for the project, Kanter, will be available to answer all questions by phone: 917-740-0405 or email: Outreach Neponsit@gmail.comAttheendofthemeeting, Lou is Calemine announced a pilot program for a private security ser vice in Neponsit, that they hope homeowners will help support the funding for, in wake of an increase in crime in the area while the po lice are spread thin. “We just want something to provide visibility as a deterrent because right now we have none,” Calemine said. Nepon sit homeowners will receive a letter with more details.

NYC Health + Hospitals, which currently owns the site and NYC Parks, which will take over the site after demolition, are working to gether to oversee the demolition process, ensuring that it’s done within City, State and Federal regu lations. Representatives from both agencies plus, Nat Barranco of Ur bahn Architects, Tom Tilleli of TDX Construction and Adrienne Kanter of Stokes Creative Group, who will serve as the community contact for the project, were at the meeting at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club to answer questions.Demolition will be taking place this fall with the first steps beginning sometime after Labor Day. One of the first steps to be taken, which was a big concern for many, will be re mediation of vermin by laying down traps for rodents and trapping and releasing any other large animals like raccoons, plus using sound systems to scare off pigeons and other birds. Then they’ll start to remove hazard ous material from the buildings before the demolition process will begin. Af ter everything is demolished, the site will be leveled and suitable soil will be added to the land, plus a new topsoil so the land can be seeded, returning it to parkland before next summer. Part of the land will be used for a new life guard facility and an adjacent parking lot with 30 spaces for lifeguard use, which will take up a small area of the land near Rockaway Beach Blvd.

Far Rockaway Man Killed in Sidewalk Hit and Run

Page 5THURSDAY, September 1, 2022The Rockaway Times

An innocent disabled man is deceased after an argument between two women in Far Rockaway led to one attempting to use her car as a weapon.

The defendant allegedly intended to strike a woman with whom she had a dispute and drove onto the Beach 20th Street sidewalk where the victim was sitting on his walker. The defendant then backed up, allegedly hit another pedestrian, and sped away from the scene of the incident, according to a press release from Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. The incident was also caught on securityDistrictfootage.Attorney Katz said, “As alleged, this defendant is accused of killing an innocent man on the sidewalk and injuring another victim in an attempt to harm someone else with her vehicle following a heated argument. The alleged criminal actions of this defendant resulted in fatal consequences, and she will now face justice in our courts.”

As seen on video, Phoenix entered the driver’s seat of the Honda Accord, reversed the car then turned sharply to the right allegedly at and toward the first victim, accelerating forward onto the sidewalk. Several people, including the first victim, darted from the path of the car. Phoenix drove forward, striking Mr. Storch who was unable to rise from his walker. The car then stopped and accelerated in reverse hitting a 36-year-old pedestrian behind the car. The defendant then sped away from the scene of the incident.Mr.Storch was taken to St. John’s Episcopal hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A second man was taken to the hospital and treated for back and hip injuries. The investigation was conducted by Detective Brendan Hannon of the NYPD’s 101st Detective Squad. Criminal complaints and indictments are accusations. A defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. As Storch has no known family, the Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol, Chesed Shel Emes, Achiezer Community Center and the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula arranged a funeral service for Storch on Wednesday, August 31.

The two women argued and became embroiled in a physical altercation outside the convenience store near a parked Honda Accord. Several onlookers watched the women including second victim Milton Storch, seated on his walker with his back against the deli wall. It’s true. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But what happens when “Honeymoon In Vegas” opens on Friday, September 9, at the Rockaway Theatre Company (RTC) will be a swirling musical-comedy that fills the stage with razzle-dazzle laughs, catchy songs, dancing, colorful costumes, heartfelt moments and plot twists you won’t see coming. The show runs September 9 through September 25 at RTC’s Post Theatre in Fort Tilden. “Honeymoon in Vegas,” involves Jack and Betsy who are about to get married (or are they?), gambler/gangster Tommy Korman, lounge singers, showgirls, a possible Elvis sighting, Momma, native gods and an assortment of colorful characters. The onstage action spans Brooklyn, Hawaii and, of course,“HoneymoonVegas. in Vegas,” based on the 1992 James Caan/Nicholas Cage film of the same name, was made into a musical which opened on Broadway starring Tony Danza in 2014. RTC director Frank Caiti notes, it’s a hilarious show which “has everything audiences look for in a classic large-stage musical, while bringing its own unique brand of comedy. It sort of puts a hilarious bend on the musical-comedy genre. It has rarely been done since its initial Broadway incarnation,” but now it’s coming to Rockaway.

Caiti himself is no stranger to all aspects of the stage. “I’ve been involved with the RTC for 18 years, as a director, actor, set designer and teacher. As a director, my approach is to always be mindful of the experience the audience is having, and to make the most that I can out of the material we are working on. I try to set an environment in rehearsals that always point us toward a high overall production value and a meaningful experience for my actors, designers and crew,” he said. The crew and cast guarantee there will be plenty of laughs and surprises along the way. Indeed, production on “Vegas” has been very hands-on. The cast has been rehearsing lines, dance and music for days on end, and choreographing the many set-piece movements. Plus happily spending a day together painting those brightly colorful sets.

Fun. Fun. The show is a trip, quite literally. It has all the glitz of the Vegas Strip with extra magic thrown in for good measure. The music is catchy, clever and played by 12 amazing musicians. The costumes are stunning (and there are A LOT of them) and the set is, perhaps, the largest we’ve ever had in the RTC. To say this show is a spectacle is pretty accurate!”Supporting Rockaway’s arts is a great thing, he notes. But it’s quite another thing to come out and be completely “WOW’ed by the experience. We open September 9 and are ready to WOW you! Come along for the ride!”

Norman Lunde, Artist and Veteran, Dies 96

If the Ramones put the Rockaways on the map with “Rockaway Beach,” Pop Artist, Norman William Lunde gave his hometown a face with dozens of joyful historical paintings. Mr. Lunde, a seventy-year resident of the Rockaways, life-long artist, and Grand Marshal of this year's American Legion Memorial Day Parade, passed peacefully at 96 on August 27 of heart failure, at home with hisNormanfamily. was known for his bright and whimsical cartoon-like paintings showcasing late 19th century Rockaways life. He focused on the carney side of the peninsula with brash acrylic paintings of early boardwalk attractions, soda fountains, beach goers, lifeguards and advertisements. Although Playland and its wiz-bang Atom Smasher were typical subjects, he sometimes dabbled in impressionistic painting including a 4’ x 4’ canvas of Rockaway’s cultural Icon, Patti Smith.Norman was born on June 25, 1926 in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, the youngest child of Anton Lunde and Louise Zoelle. As a child, he used a bologna sandwich and a nickel to bribe a moving van driver to take him to Texas to his meet his hero Gene Autry for shooting lessons. The driver sadly declined but a decade later the U.S. Army acquiesced with infantry lessons and a trip to Europe aboard the Queen Elizabeth.

Suddenly, if you are lucky to make it this far, you slip into the pipeline of life, and now you have become one of those people you never wanted to be, the ones who are trapped in life’s cycle. But at this point, you really aren’t think ing that, because maybe you are in love, maybe you have a family, and are pursuing all the things that make life worth living. You have now completely forgotten about how you viewed this age as a single digit old kid. You give kids “orders” because you are older and know better, and the younger ones have no choice but to follow, but their double-digit old breth ren roll their eyes, smirk, and re luctantly do the minimum of what youMagically, requested. whatever homenest-life you constructed changes because the little “chicks” that you hatched have all learned to fly, and only occasionally come back to vis it. If you are truly lucky, the partner who helped you construct the nest is still hanging with you because as nests go, it’s a good Continuedone.on

By Lou RememberPastina when you were very young, when everyone was older than you were, and you looked at everyone else as, well, “old”? And that was because everyone was in deed older than you. Can you think back to when you were single digits old? The kids that had just crossed into double digits, they were the “cool” older kids, the kids you as pired to be like. Then there were the older teenage kids, who were still “cool,” but were slightly scary because they were doing stuff that was way beyond your comprehen sion, like smoking, hanging out, and being somewhat dangerous looking.Backthen, the people that were in their twenties, maybe thirties, still vital, “looked” really old from the eyes of a single digits old. They were already in the pipeline of “life.” They had jobs, were mar ried, had kids of their own, maybe a house, and were always trying to enjoy life because they were work ing so hard to make ends meet. They were the people you nev er aspired to be like because as a single digit old kid, that was scary stuff. Then there were the people who were aunts, uncles, grand parents, neighbors, teachers, and others. They were all like in their forties or fifties, maybe even six ties, and they were considered extremely old to a single digit old kid. Then a funny thing happens, you grow up a bit, add a few years, cross the double-digit age line, maybe even into late teens. At this point there are kids who are young er than you, but you lose all mem ory of what a kids’ perspective is, because now you are one of the “cool” kids; and the ones younger are looking at you and want to be you. But now you are also closer to the pipeline of life, and look at any one older with suspicion, distrust, like all they want you to do is to do the things they want done. And so, it’s time for rebellion against the “old people.” And the ones in their sixties and seventies, well they’re just ancient, you think that this will never end.

At this point, see now suddenly realize that are the “old people.” Somehow have moved almost through the entire pipeline, and when you look in the reflection of the window, see not the image from mind, but the “old” person that you saw in your youth: an image dreamily reminiscent of an aunt or uncle, mother or father, grandmother, or grandfather. This is the point when realize that the bend in the curve does not go on forever, that the arc has a beginning and an end, that there is a cycle to this game. The St. Francis de Sales basket ball courts were filled on Friday, August 26 as players of all ages came together for a day of healthy competition in memory of a woman who inspired many in the sport—Clare Droesch. Droesch began the 3 on 3 By the Sea amid her battle with breast cancer, to raise funds and aware ness while playing a sport she loved. The tournament continues even after her passing in 2018, thanks to friends, family and tour nament host Keith “Bugsy” Gold berg. Despite a few quick passing showers, Friday was a beautiful day for the courts to be full as kids to adults continued Clare’s legacy through basketball. DJ Poppa D kept the crowds entertained while volunteers sold 50/50s to help raise funds. All proceeds go the Clare Dro esch Scholarship Fund which supports scholarships at SFDS Catholic Academy, Christ the King High School, and Boston College, and also provides assis tance to friends in need dealing withThecancer.champions of Friday’s 3 on 3 By the Sea include: Boys: 3rd grade- Royal Crush ers, 4th grade - Ballers, 5th grade - Beach Lightning, 6th grade-Brooklyn Storm, 7th gradeBear Ballers, 8th grade - Hooli gans, 9th grade-Big Muchachos, 10th-12th grade-Clippers Ballers and the Mens Open-Rockaway's BoysGirls: 3rd grade-Basketball Besties, 4th grade - Clare's Mag nets, 5th grade-Clare's Beach Ballers, 6th grade-Clare's Bears, 7th grade-Express Starz, 8th grade - Best Ballers, 9th-10th grade-CeCe's Minions, 11th-12th grade-Molloy and the Women's Open - Hawks.

KILLED IN ACCIDENTBOARDWALK

If are

you

As a reminder, motorized or electric bikes, scooters, and ATVs are not permitted on the boardwalk. In response to the incident, Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers said, “The Rockaway Boardwalk is a refuge for New Yorkers to enjoy the beauty of our City’s shoreline, not a place for New Yorkers to get struck by a vehicle. Last year, I co-sponsored Intro. 1888-2020, a law prohibiting all non-City owned or non-authorized motor vehicles from being used on City elevated boardwalks to ensure tragedies like this don’t happen. We need more stringent enforcement to safeguard the lives of all New Yorkers. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the tragic accident that happened in my district today. If you have any information on this case, please call 877-577TIPS.”

A motorcycle joyride on the boardwalk turned deadly on Monday, August 29. A 25-year-old was riding a motorcycle with a friend on the back, traveling westbound on the boardwalk when he lost control at about Beach 47th Street, hit a bench and crashed into a 55-year-old man who was rollerblading. The collision sent the motorcycle passenger flying over the handlebars and landing on the boardwalk, suffering severe head injuries. That passenger, 26-yearold David Molina of Cedarhurst, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, according to the NYPD. The driver of the motorcycle ditched the bike and fled on foot. As we go to press, he has not been apprehended. The man on rollerblades suffered minor head injuries and was taken to Jamaica Medical Center for treatment.

Last summer, the group of 50 Shorebird Ecology Ambassador volunteers, or SEA-VIPs, donated 1,200 hours, made over 7,500 visitor contacts, and launched a new beachfront visitor contact station.

"What Chris Allieri and the NYC Plover Project have been able to accomplish in their first two years is truly impressive," said Jen Nersesian, ourmitmenttheirareSuperintendent.Gateway's"Theyagreatpartner,andpassionandcom-toprotectingwildlifemakesareal difference on the ground. But perhaps even more important is the impact they have had through outreach, engaging and inspiring so many other members of the public in environmental stewardship.”The George and Helen Hartzog Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service recognize the exemplary contributions that NPS volunteers make to their park and to their community. Nearly 300,000 volunteers contribute more than 6.5 million hours of service annually in national parks. George B. Hartzog, Jr. served as the 7th director of the NPS and created the Volunteers-In-Parks program in 1970.

The summer season has mixed effects on the Rockaway real estate market. On the one hand, we are a beachfront community and the draw of the summer activities does bring people here for: beaches, swimming, cycling, running, surfing, organized teams for kids and adults (although the pandemic may crimp some of these this year; thankfully the “end” is in sight). On the other hand, some sellers are reluctant to sell during the summer because they enjoy the aforementioned activities and don’t want to give them up so fast!

IMPROVE OR UPGRADE?

I often meet buyers and/or sell ers contemplating the same di lemma – They need more space in their home for growing families. Should they put a lot of money into an existing home (or a poten tial purchase), or should they buy a bigger, more expensive house which doesn’t need a lot of work? Last week I wrote about the fel low whose inexpensive construc tion man delayed the sale and probably cost him a lot of money because of the delay in marketing the house. Ultimately the decision to improve or upgrade depends somewhat on individual finances and the specifics of the house in question. In general, it probably makes more sense to sell the ex isting house and avoid making any large investment in construction work. Why? Delays and cost overruns are common problems. I’d try to avoid building permits, archi tects and construction workers in our current environment. On the other hand, I have a comprehen sive list of tradesmen if you want to seriously consider construction: this includes plumbers, roofers, masons, carpenters, architects, electricians, general contractors, etc., and even handymen. Of course, my suggestion to sell rather than upgrade is dependent on obtaining an acceptable price for the existing home and buying the right new house at a fair price. I can help. Call me. Love, Robin.

It can be harder to sell real estate during the summer due to vacations by buyers and sellers alike. Summer activities can also occupy people instead of allowing them to focus on the home sale process. The spring season has been generally good for our real estate market. There has been action across the board in all price categories with an emphasis on the range below $1 million (approx). Prices have firmed up within the framework of recent comparable sales and in some cases are creeping higher. Inventory levels remain very low. Call me, Love, Robin. 718-490-9463

The thing is to make is to make mental or physical notes about these feelings to identify what could be adjusted so that life that becomes healthy, happy and whole. Minor adjustments here and there to sort of straighten out the path from curvy and meandering to straight and narrow: easily traveled and focused - a life of ease and contentment and peace. Working out the kinks, harmonizing the energy. Waking up feeling weak; well, maybe seek out ways to gain physical strength. Waking up feeling sad; seek out beauty in nature, in a child. Waking up feeling sluggish; look at what you ate the day before and had eaten a few days before (when your gut is healthy, boy, can you feel it). And it really is a series of adjustments and re-adjustments and well-intentioned changes of habit that don’t serve anymore. And it is always changing so we are pretty much in a state of adjusting or reorganizing something pretty much all of the time. Just making it a practice to check in with oneself every day, no matter when it is, is so important - I know I often mention it here. Being selfaware then actively practicing loving compassion to oneself is the key to this freedom of taking care of oneself in the best possible way. I often said guiding yoga classes: when we are happy, healthy and whole, we can be there for others. It is such a marvelous feeling to feel and care for someone from a place of full and utter compassion and gratitude. I am coming to know that being intentional about everything I do serves me very well. It gives me a chance to think before I speak and act and that gives a second glance to making sure I speak and act out of love peace and joy. Well as much as I can do. What a balancing act. What a continuously changing path. Being intentional about moderating every day so that my morning rises are graceful and pleasant. If they aren’t, checking in to see what adjustment(s) can be made to get to feeling alright. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

What does it take to feel alright every day? A great check-in is assessing how we feel when we first wake up. Not only in reference to being well-rested or getting enough sleep, but also mood-, sensory-, energy-wise. And then thinking back on the day before and to see how a good thing you did, for example, like eat well, helped you to feel healthy with energy the next morning. And, on the flip side, how what something you may have done or engaged in, made you feel less than healthy or sad the next morning. Seems so obvious, yet we sometimes don’t really pay attention.

These bacterial strains are thought to improve the microbiota of the gut by getting rid of harmful strains like Clostridium and others. Fer mentation is an ancient method of food preservation. By John C. Harris, Interpretive Ranger at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Equindito is the name given to the northwest shores of Jamaica Bay by the Canarsie. The name, which is commonly translated as "broken land," refers to a muddy archipelago of saltmarsh that appeared and vanished with the tides and storms. Much like its topography, the name of the region has changed several times; today, its most present feature is Floyd Bennett Field, formerly Barren Island. In the 17th century, Dutch colonial settlers referred to Equindito’s largest island as Beeren Eylandt, meaning Bear’s Island. A 1664 deed relays the Canarsie supposedly sold Beeren Eylandt to settlers John Tilton and Samuel Spicer, and for centuries it retained the English corruption of its Dutch name, Barren Island. While it may seem strange to consider Floyd Bennett Field an island, it was, at high tide, until the twentieth century, an island separated from mainland Brooklyn by a large tidalLocatedcreek. on the southwest periphery of the colonial settlements of New Amersfoort, later Flatlands, and Brooklyn, the roughly 100-acre island was primarily reserved as a pasture for cattle. In 1859, heavy industry made its way to its southern shore, first in the form of a fish oil reducing factory, then a horse rendering factory, and eventually a refuse processing plant. As the City grew, so did the need for usable land. In 1923, the separation of Barren Island from mainland Brooklyn was filled in to accommodate the extension of Flatbush Avenue to its furthest point south. In 1928, construction began on Floyd Bennett Field, the City’s first municipal airport, during which enough fill—in the form of trash and sand— elevated the newly enlarged landmass sixteen feet above sea level.

Floyd Bennett Field’s namesake honors a 1917 enlistee into the U.S. Navy. Bennettt enlisted as a mechanic and became a flight instructor before rising to the rank of warrant officer. After the war, in 1925, he was selected to fly arctic expeditions. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the Congressional Medal of Honor for his feats on one remarkable flight over Greenland in which he climbed out of the cockpit to work on the troubled engine. On a 1928 rescue mission, Bennettt contracted a fatal case of pneumonia. Two years later, in 1930, the airfield opened in his name. The airfield served as a starting point for many record-breaking flights until 1942, when it was absorbed by the U.S. Navy.In 1979, the decommissioned air station was incorporated into Gateway National Recreation Area. Since then—in addition to offering a place to camp within city limits, hosting the City’s largest community garden, and launching kayaking programs—it has helped promote these histories. Although the Ryan Visitor Center (named after the U.S. Congressman who campaigned for the creation of Gateway) is currently closed, an outdoor exhibit, researched by Miriam Sicherman, examines the communities of Barren Island and how the sanitation industry has redefined the landscape of Jamaica Bay is on display through Labor Day.

By Tom Last I have been sleeping better at night knowing that the U.S. government is finally taking Climate Change seriously, by passing the Climate Change Bill. I understand that this Bill is only a start to combating Climate Change and much more needs to be done by the government and all of us, but at least for now there is hope for a brighter future.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (a/k/a The Climate Change Bill) that passed both Houses of Congress two weeks ago provides us with a real opportunity to combat Climate Change and save the world from an environmental crisis. The Climate Change Bill gives us hope that our future generations (not too future) will be able to survive the impact and effects of greenhouse gases on the planet. This impact includes – rising sea levels, warmer temperatures, more catastrophic storms, drought, agricultural destruction, insect, animal extinction,Theetc.Bill includes some compromises related to oil pipelines & leases, however, Chuck Schumer (Senate Majority Leader) exclaimed that the Climate Change Bill is the “most comprehensive & significant piece of legislation in decades.” Bill Gates described the legislation as the “single most important piece of climate legislation in American history”. So why is the Climate Change Bill so important? To start with, the size of the investment is massive, of the $737 billion raised by the Bill, $369 billion will be spent on energy and combating Climate Change. This investment will keep us on target to reduce gas emissions to 40% below 2005 levels in 2030 compared to 30% under current policy. This will also move the U.S. closer to reaching its commitment, in the Paris Agreement, to cut emissions by 50% below 2005 level by 2030. So, you may be questioning the price tag of the Bill. Well, consider this: “NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) released the final update to its 2021 Billion-dollar disaster ergy, and other green technology solutions. $2,000 per year for home efficiency products such as windows, exterior doors, water heaters, skylights, etc. Tax credits for home energy audit and electric panel upgrade. Basically, the government is providing us with tax credits to make our houses more energy efficient, which equates to lower energy bills for consumers.ThisBillis important politically, as it demonstrates to other nations how serious the U.S is on Climate Change and provides an impetus for them to follow suit by enacting similar policy changes. Countries will need to keep up with the U.S. or fall far behind in producing and utilizing green technology products. The ‘bottom line’ is that this Bill will make cleaner energy and electric vehicles more affordable for all Americans and other countries. It will make the U.S. less dependent on foreign countries like China for critical green technology materials and products. Isn’t that what we have been striving for to keep America strong and independent? It will provide us with the tools we require to ensure a habitable world for future generations. Still, we cannot rely on this Bill alone to prevent serious damage to the planet. Leah Stokes, a climate policy expert at the University of California, Santa Barbara, states “This Bill is really on the beginning”. Therefore, we ask all Rockaway residents to become environmental advocates and to educate ourselves on Climate Change and reducing our Carbon Footprint. If we don’t start now –When?
