Remembering 9/11 Locally
By Katie McFadden
It has been sixteen years since that tragic day where thousands were killed in a series of terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The Rockaway peninsula took a big personal hit, losing more than 70 members of the community, and Rockaway will never forget. There are several events taking place around town to remember the fallen. Last year, Brian Flanigan kicked off a new tradition, the 9/11 Remembrance race, to honor the fallen and keep their memory alive. The 2nd Annual 9/11 Remembrance Race is this Saturday, September 9. All are welcome to participate in a 5K Fun Run that starts at the 9/11 Memorial in Roxbury and makes its way to the Breezy Point 9/11 Memorial. The race starts at 10 a.m., with a party featuring live music by the Hell or High Water Band, food, rides and runner awards immediately after at the Breezy Ball Field, from noon to 4 p.m. Advanced registration is now open online at www.bpremembers911.com, or there will be day-of registration starting at 9 a.m. at the Roxbury 9/11 Memorial. The runners fee for those 21 and over is $35 and $15 for those younger than 21. For those who just want to partake in the festivities after the run, it is $20 for those 21 and older and $10 for those under 21. The race is open to anyone, but non-shareholders are encouraged to get a parking pass from a shareholder in advance to park in the private community. The fees help go to good causes. About 75 percent of last year’s proceeds went toward to 9/11 Memorial Fund for the
upkeep of the Breezy Point and Roxbury memorials and 25 percent went to the ALS ONE organization. This year, the proceeds will be split equally between The Caffrey Conroy Learning Center, School Scholarship Money for the Kids, which will go to one child runner selected at random, local volunteer fire departments and the 9/11 Memorial Fund. Also on Saturday, September 9, the Charlie Heeran Foundation will be hosting a Mass and Communion Breakfast in memory of Heeran, a young local who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center and died on 9/11. The Mass will be held at 11:15 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church to remember those who died on 9/11 and to honor Father Jim Cunningham, who is celebrating his 22nd anniversary as a priest. The Mass is open to all. A reception will follow at the school hall for $50 per person. The money will go toward the new Teen Club in the St. Francis de Sales Grammar School basement. Sunday, September 10 will be a day to remember at the beach. The 13th Annual Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic will honor Richie Allen, one of the many local firefighters who died on September 11, with a kids’ surf contest this Sunday at Beach 91st Street. The surf contest will be for boys 10 and under, 11 to 13, and 14 to 16, and girls 12 and under and 13 to 16. There will be fun for the whole family and non-surfers alike as there will also be boogie boarding and stand up paddle boarding, food, music, drinks, t-shirts, giveaways and a memorial paddle out. This event was started by Boarders Surf Shop and the friends and family of local hero, Richie Allen. Some may want to pause and reflect at Tribute Park on the bayside of Beach 116th to remember 9/11. On Sunday, September 10, there will be a yoga class held in the park at 6:15 p.m.. A $10 donation is suggested to help the Friends of Tribute Park continue to
maintain the park throughout the year. On Monday, September 11, Rockaway will remember with a formal ceremony starting at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony includes the reading of the names of the fallen Rockaway residents and the placing of roses around the memorial

compass, plus live music featuring Chazmond Peacock and Steven Wagner on vocals, and Aerial Acoustics featuring Dorothy Wagner and Dennis Smith. This event is made possible by the Friends of Tribute Park, 1-800-Flowers and the DeMatteis family.

Local Kids Step up for Harvey Victims
By Katie McFadden
Some little ones have mighty big hearts. Over the past week, many local children have stepped up to help out Texas after the state was hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. From lemonade stands to book sales to even donating their tips, Rockaway kids have been raising funds for Harvey victims and showing Texas that they’re not alone.
The annual Labor Day bungalow court party at Beach 108th and Beach 109th turned into a fundraiser when Bobby Zimmer and others decided to pass around a five-gallon water jug to collect money for those in Texas. Joe Spillane’s grandchildren stepped up to the plate by making bracelets to be sold to help raise money. They were able to raise more than $1,200. “The kids were the spirit behind pass-
ing around the jug and asking people for donation. We have to give recognition where it is due. These kids were great,” Zimmer said. Some local kids were motivated by local group Rockaway WISH to collect funds. Jenna Mikell and Rosemary Tubridy donated their tips from waitressing to the group. Jennifer Otero-Callipo helped spearhead a lemonade and baked goods sale at the fields in Fort Tilden and in front of St. Francis de Sales Church with the help of her kids and their friends.
Other kids have been setting up sales of their own. The Burkes set up a table on the Beach 122nd boardwalk to sell books and homemade slime to raise money to buy gift cards for Hurricane Harvey victims last weekend. Frankie Brunner and John Courtney set up a lemonade stand on Beach 135th Street. A large group of kids set up a lemonade and iced tea stand on Beach 117th. A cookie stand also popped up on the boardwalk on Beach 120th the day after Harvey hit Texas. Way to go kids! Keep up the great work! A Time To Step Up & Help Those In Need By Kami-Leigh Agard
In the following weeks, The Rockaway Times will be doing a series highlighting the amazing local nonprofit organizations and volunteers who freely give their time and resources to help their neighbors locally and beyond. After Superstorm Sandy, all, if not the majority of us on the peninsula and Broad Channel, can recall the faces of those who volunteered their time wholeheartedly to help our community without any payment in return. Some of these faces we will never see again, but they left their footprints in our hearts. Now, it’s our turn. Folks in Texas devastated by Hurricane Harvey need our help, and now with Hurricane Irma boasting a force of Category 5 as of press time, pummeling the Caribbean and setting sights on Florida, more than ever, we need to step up. There are many avenues locally, where you donate your time and resources to help. Also, our philanthropic efforts are needed right here in our
community for a neighbor living a street or miles away. The following is a sample of local organizations in which you can join to volunteer your services in the peninsula and beyond. Note that this list doesn’t include everyone. The Graybeards — What started off as a group of Rockaway guys aged over 50 playing in a basketball league in 1995, within six years, evolved into an organized group determined to help their neighbors as clearly stated in their motto: “To help our neighbors in their time of need.” According to Steve Stathis, former Graybeards president and now board member, it was RT’s publisher, Kevin Boyle’s idea. After losing 70 locals to the tragedy on 9/11, the Graybeards stepped up to help their grieving neighbors. They have since grown from 55 members to about 260 today, and were instrumental with rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy, raising over $1.4M to help residents devastated by the storm. Today, they do tremendous work in helping the community by hosting events
such as the Family Fun 5K Run, blood drives, the annual Spring Spruce up event, where they select a needy local family and do improvements to their homes, the Friend in Need fundraiser, where they help locals financially get through tough times by assisting with medical payments, financial support, tuition assistance, etc., and more! To join The Graybeards, you do need to be sponsored by a member. For more info. visit: thegraybeards.com Rockaway W.I.S.H. — Since 2006, W.I.S.H. has been at the forefront of local volunteer efforts, aiding neighbors in times of need. Post Hurricane Sandy, they provided monetary relief to the recovery and rebuilding of Rockaway and Broad Channel after the Hurricane. According to their mission statement, “We promote participation in charitable events, particularly those that bring attention to and support causes that affect the lives of women and children. We are always looking for motivated women who would like to do what they can to sup-
port and help the Rockaway community.” By the way, W.I.S.H. is hosting a Hurricane Harvey Happy Hour fundraiser at Bungalow Bar this Friday, September 8 at 7 p.m. For more information: visit: rockawaywish.org There are countless other organizations on the peninsula and Broad Channel that you can volunteer your time and efforts including the Broad Channel, Breezy Point and Rockaway Point volunteer fire and ambulance departments, Rockaway Rising, local churches and synagogues, civic associations and much more! If you want to nominate a charitable organization for The Rockaway Times series, please do. Email: editor@rockawaytimes.com We look forward to your recommendations. Also, if you are in doubt about whether an organization you would like volunteer your time and donate towards is legit, check their registered nonprofit status on the Internal Revenue Service website: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits or Guidestar.org

Summer Through September By Katie McFadden
Labor Day may have come and gone, quicker that we thought, but that doesn’t mean summer is over. With the weather still nice, there is still plenty of summer left. After all, it doesn’t officially end until September 22, and there’s plenty to do to make your summer last. Earlier this year, the City announced that the beach season would be extended once again. The beaches are staffed with lifeguards and other Parks Department workers through Sunday, September 10. During this time, lifeguarded beaches may be limited as much of the staff has returned back to school, but there will still be a good amount of open beaches. Also open every day through September 10 is the boardwalk concessions. Rippers at Beach 86th, Low Tide and the other concessions at Beach 97th and Caracas at Beach 106th are open straight into the weekend—and then beyond. Caracas con-
Spa
firmed that they will continue to stay open on weekends through October 1 and will continue to have live music. As we went to press, we could not confirm if Low Tide and Rippers would be following suit. Connolly’s may be a summer bar, but you can still get your frozens for two more weekends. Connolly’s will be open Friday, September 8 through Sunday, September 10 and then Friday, September 15 through Sunday, September 17, before wrapping it up for the season. There are plenty of outdoor events in the lineup for the next few weeks. On Sunday, September 10, head to Beach 91st for the 13th Annual Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic. This day will feature a surf contest for kids 16 and under, boogie boarding, paddle boarding, food, music, t-shirts and a memorial paddle out all in honor of Richie Allen, a firefighter who died on 9/11. Registration for the contest starts at 8 a.m., with the contest kicking off at 9 a.m.,
but the event goes on all day. On Friday, September 15 at 9 p.m., Bungalow Bar keeps the summer going with their popular Country Night on the Water. This night of country features the Swon Brothers. This event is open to those 21 and over and tickets must be purchased in advance at nycountryswag.com. Saturday, September 16 is a big day in and around Rockaway. Some may want to head to the Coney Island Amphitheater for the Great Irish Fair, featuring a full lineup of Irish bands, dancers, bagpipes, plus food, beer and shopping. The event starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door and free for those 14 and under. For those looking to stay in town, the 3rd Annual Poseidon’s Parade is also on September 16. All are welcome to wear their best nautical garb and march in the parade or just come out to watch. The parade kicks off at noon from Beach 105th Street and makes its way down the boardwalk. To register
or for more information, head to poseidonsparade.com. If the fishy costumes got you in the mood for some seafood, head to the Belle Harbor Yacht Club afterwards for the 3rd Annual Rockaway Oyster Fest. The event includes unlimited beer and oysters, plus live music from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. You must be 23 and up. Search Rockaway Oyster Fest on Eventbrite.com for $50 tickets. Even after summer is officially over, the fun continues. On Saturday, September 23 is Honey Fest at the Beach 106th Concession. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., you can get all the honey you want while enjoying food, music, film, arts and crafts and more. For more info see www.nychoneyweek.com/ honey-fest. Also, the Rockaway Business Alliance is hosting Rock-a-block-BLVD. Rockaway Beach Boulevard, from Beach 89th to Beach 94th, will be closed off for a day full of yoga, fitness, square dancing, a pet talent show, face painting, pie eating, henna and more.

Local Families Survive Labor Day Blaze By Katie McFadden
Labor Day turned out to be a nightmare for families living in an apartment building on Beach 91st Street. A two-alarm fire broke out in the early morning hours of Monday, September 4, which left the families with nothing, but they made it out alive due to quick thinking and the bravery of FDNY. Dawn Mercado, who lived where the fire first started on the second floor of the 173 Beach 91st Street building, recalled the events of that night. “My 18-year-old daughter, Dominique, met her boyfriend outside and was smoking a cigarette. It was around 2:30 a.m. My mom, Robin, woke up to use the bathroom and she saw that the bed was on fire. She immediately woke me and my 10-year-old son up. If it wasn’t for my mom waking us up, I don’t know what would’ve happened because we didn’t hear or smell anything. When she woke us up, we could see the smoke and we ran out of the house with no shoes, just the clothes on our back,” Mercado said. Firefighters found the cause to be an accident. “My daughter had a cat in her room and she likes to light candles. We think the cat knocked over one of the candles and it set the bed on fire,” Mercado said. The family hasn’t found the cat. While the Mercado’s ran out to safety, Dominique’s boyfriend called 911. “The fire spread quickly because it took the fire department 10 minutes to get there and with all the cars parked where the fire hydrant was, they had a problem getting the hose over to the house,” Mercado said. As the firefighters on site tried to put out the blaze, Lieutenant Joseph Costa of Ladder 137 and Lieutenant Sean Hayden of Ladder 121 took quick action to rescue members of the family on the third floor, where the fire had spread. "We ran into the burning building when we heard screams and looked up to see a woman straddling the third floor window sill with a baby.

There was a lot of smoke coming out over her head and she was very distressed. She was looking below for someone to drop the baby to. Lieutenant Sean Hayden and I ran into the building and right to her apartment where we encountered zero visibility and punishing high heat conditions," Lieutenant Joseph Costa told the FDNY. ”When we made it into the front bedroom, Lieutenant Hayden and I each grabbed a baby and guided the others down the interior stairs and out to safety as quickly as possible. We got them all out safely and that's what is most important.” Lieutenant Hayden said, "When you have someone hanging out the window ready to drop a baby and jump, everything that we learned and trained for comes into play." The FDNY was able to get the blaze under control by 3 a.m. “Our success would not have been possible without the ag-

gressive interior push the Engine company made with the hose line. They did a tremendous job putting the fire out under extreme conditions," Costa said. There were no casualties, however more than a dozen people were hospitalized including a man who had jumped from a window, and several firefighters. The victims are now left without homes and most, if not all, of their belongings. “I was allowed to go back in with a Red Cross worker the next day to see if I could get identification, but I couldn’t even get that. I couldn’t see anything. Everything was burned and turned to ash and the walls were ripped down. I couldn’t even get to the back room where the fire had started,” Mercado said. Rockaway has already started to rally to help the families recover. Individuals, groups and even local businesses have
stepped up to assist them. “Pickles and Pies donated cards to get food, the Rockaway Surf Shop donated t-shirts and someone brought my son’s school list to Job Lot and the store donated all of the supplies on his list. Marissa Bernowitz of We Care New York and Pastor Garry of House on the Rock Church brought sleeping bags and air mattresses because we’ve been sleeping on my sister’s floor. There are 11 of us in a three-bedroom apartment, so we’re trying to find another place to stay,” Mercado said. A GoFundMe account has also been started to raise money for the family. Anyone who wants to make a monetary donation, can do so by going to www. gofundme.com/te4btq-housefire-destroys-everything. “I appreciate everything everyone has been doing for us,” Mercado said. The Rockaway Times could not get in touch with the family that resided on the third floor of the building. The mother of the two young children that were rescued reportedly works for dentist, Dr. Stein at 90-08 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, which is collecting donations. Mercado says she doesn’t know what’s next. “I’ve lived in Rockaway my whole life and I don’t know if we’re going to be able to stay here. My son is really shaken up. But I’m just glad that my children and mother are alive and my neighbors are okay. My children are here, my mother is here. We’re alive. After Sandy, we were displaced and I had to work to get everything together and I’ll do it again,” she said.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Show Some Rockaway Love for Our ASD Texan Families! As many of us local families and caregivers are doing the electric slide as our children on the spectrum are finally back in school, for the families in Texas devastated by Hurricane Har-
vey, it’s a very different picture. Remember Frankenstorm Sandy? Though just five years ago, I’m sure you painfully recollect the horrific mayhem our families endured. From being

displaced from our homes — to basic necessities such as heat, hot water and home-cooked food no longer accessible — to our children bewildered about their daily routines starkly interrupted, their sensory issues magnified, and the particular foods they eat, no longer readily available — it was absolutely horrific. My daughter, who at the time was four years old, refused to eat anything or drink. She developed what her doctor coined as the “Rockaway cough.” Our pediatrician’s local office was destroyed, so we took her to their Long Beach office, and met numerous families all distraught about their children’s ailments in the aftermath of Sandy. This is what the families in Texas are experiencing this very minute, and with the flood levels rising, families unsure if they will ever be able to return to their beloved homes, schools closed with no certainty as to when they will reopen, much-needed therapies on stand-by, and some children with multiple conditions besides autism unable to receive services, imagine how overwhelmed these families are? Like those of us who experienced Sandy, for Texan families, it must seem an impossible prospect to even think about what’s next on the horizon. However, there is Rockaway hope and love to share! Here are ways we can help. (Note, these are just suggestions. If you have concerns about these organizations’ legitimacy and if they qualify for tax-deductible charitable contributions, visit the Internal Revenue Service website. Also Google them for further proof of their validity and honest intentions). — Autism Society of Texas has set up a Hurricane Harvey Disaster Fund for autism families. All contributions will be used to help individuals and families with autism impacted by the hurricane. Funds will be used towards helping individuals and families with flooding by providing temporary housing, cleaning supplies, food, clothing, sensory support items, etc. http://www.autism-society. org/news/autism-society-texas-hurricane-relief/
The Rockaway Times — Texas Diaper Bank Harvey Relief Donation are accepting disposable baby diapers, pullups, adult diapers, formula and wipes. New or gently used baby items such as clothes, blankets, bottles, breast pumps, small toys etc. Please refrain from donating cloth diapers – many families will not be able to wash them. www.texasdiaperbank. org — Local Texas mom, autism blogger and homeschooler, Adrienne Bibby, of a 22-yearold son who she describes as “severely autistic,” launched a Go Fund Me (https://www. gofundme.com/har vey-autism-family) for Texan families with children on the spectrum. She states, “My 22-year-old severely autistic son and I were flooded in for five days but kept power and he was a real trooper throughout. I know firsthand the kinds of challenges something like this can bring for autism families. So I am raising money for "special" items our families need that will not be readily available at shelters or through agencies like the Red Cross. Items like noise-canceling headphones for those with extreme sound sensitivities, gluten free foods for those on special diets, that special toy or movie that is likely the only thing that can comfort a child. Just yesterday we bought a nebulizer for a child with autism whose family lost everything including his nebulizer. Statistically there are tens of thousands of families in the Houston area with one or more people they care for who is on the spectrum. This tragedy has been difficult for everyone, but it is especially difficult for these kids whose bodies do not work and react the same way as ours.” Let’s show some Rockaway love for these Texan families and their children on the spectrum. Just like the love and support we received from people from all over NYS and the country, our community’s simple acts of kindness will never be forgotten in Texan’s hearts. Stay tuned for details about the next Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group meeting. For info. about our group, email: ourartisticchild@ outlook.com or visit our Facebook page.

Out For Each Other Dear Editor: The disaster in Texas is seriously Superstorm Sandy times 10. Think about that. And all I see is people of all stripes and colors helping and saving each other. We are all Americans. Before this happened the media was trying to make us believe we were at the brink of a civil war. Nazis and Antifa are literally one percent of our population. I believe that. Find some common ground. Thank you to all the amazing people doing incredible things for these Americans.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2017 They have such a long road ahead of them. We know that here in Rockaway. But it's Texas. They do everything Big in Texas and I expect them to rebuild better than ever. Thank you to all the amazing people I know that are heading down there as we speak, and to all our local organizations like Rockaway Wish and The Graybeards who are doing what they do…making a difference. Points Of Views Dear Editor: I am a recent transplant to the area nearly two years ago now, having moved from the north of Ireland. I enjoy reading The Times every week and getting a bit of the local flavor and viewpoints from Between the Bridges and Boyleing Points. I was struck by the recent article, "The Hallmark Cure." I too feel the same dismay at the current political climate in the country that I have been
proud to call my new home. I moved from a bitterly divided country to where I had thought the discourse would be more reasonable. I have become dismayed at the similarities I see here to the bitterness and unreason, which divided my birth country. Trying to understand the political climate here and the underlying principles at the core of the two major factions that run this country has been a steep hill to climb mentally for me. I still now, after a number of years pondering where my core instincts lay in the coin toss that is political choice here, am reticent to pick one side or the other at times. But I have to admit that in the current climate I have found myself repulsed at some of the antics of the current administration. I also retract from a lot of the rhetoric of the left. I have been trying to get more of the conservative viewpoint in my media diet and while I find traditional conservative outlets use rational thinking and reasoned
Page 15 argument (Wall Street Journal, National Review, etc). I cannot stand cable 'news' of any kind and find the punditry reductive and reactionary (from all the stations). I gather from your column you are an intelligent writer coming from a right-leaning perspective. I would love to discuss some of the underlying principles of your politics from your perspective. Fit Food Comes to Rockaway By Katie McFadden
Now that you’ve spent the summer overindulging in concession food and alcohol, you might be thinking about treating your body better. Just in time, The Fit Food Kitchen is here. Mary Edwards, who has long been helping people get fit at her gym, Rockaway Gliders, has taken it to the next level. On Tuesday, September 5, she opened The Fit Food Kitchen, a food stand located next to the gym at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive. The new food stand is your go-to for healthy, natural cuisine that you don’t have the worry about prepping yourself. Edwards makes eating healthy fun with a creative, delicious menu. “There are many that think eating healthy means eating a salad or juicing, but we want to break that stigma and show people what eating clean or healthy can be,” Edwards said. The menu features a different meat or vegan
option each day. The current menu puts a twist on Asian, Italian and Mexican cuisine by making them healthier. For instance, on Tuesdays, you can grab a cauliflower fried rice bowl with skinny sesame chicken or the vegan version with teriyaki shitake mushrooms. On Thursdays, try the sweet potato nachos with grass fed beef chili or three-bean vegan chili with fresh guacamole. Fridays are for kale pesto bowls featuring cauliflower rice with roasted summer veggie and chicken or chickpeas, topped with a vegan kale basil pesto. Any weekday, you can also grab a chia seed pudding or a detox water. While the food stand is new, Mary’s fit food is not new to the peninsula. “I’ve been offering meals to people through the gym since I opened it, but I wanted to open it up more and offer it publicly,” she said. “The concept is for people to come work out and leave with a healthy meal, but you don’t

have to work out at all. Anyone can just come and have a healthy meal. Rockaway hasn’t had many places where you can just strictly get healthy food. There’s no alcohol or sweets, just healthy, yet delicious stuff. Rockaway has needed this.” What are the benefits of Fit Food? “Everything is based on clean eating. I use all natural ingredients, no fake stuff, no junk. Obesity and other health problems are often caused by processed food, chemicals, preservatives and junk. This
has none of that. It’s not only good for maintaining a healthy weight. It’s about showing people how to eat cleaner to avoid other health problems.” Edwards makes all of the food herself, but has some help from her assistant sous chef, Brianna O’Connell. Currently, the Fit Food Kitchen is only open Monday through Friday. The welcome window is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., but they offer free delivery in the evening for people who can’t get there during the day. Call or text 718564-4742 to order. “Some people may have this idea in their minds of food they don’t like, but maybe they’ve just never had it prepared the right way. This is food that’s prepared in a way that doesn’t make you dread eating healthy. It tastes great and you’re going to feel full and satisfied. The body truly is a temple and you should be nurturing it by proving it with healthy meals. Don’t be afraid to try it,” Edwards said.

LIVE MUSIC EVERY SAT. NIGHT ROCKAWAY'S OLDEST BAR
My Brothers And Sisters Are All Aboard* When you lose everything like so many in Texas did recently, it doesn’t matter what you had – it’s gone. So much of a reminder for many in our community. When we recall those dreadful days, it is amazing that everyone I talk to at least chooses to share the memories of the help and the kindness and the selfless acts and the support and the aid. In times of dire need, it seems that people feel like one human family with all brothers and sisters aboard the same boat going to the same destination. During a gathering the other night, someone very passionately talked about how only in times of real distress do people come together. She was asking why people can’t be there for one another regardless of race, creed, social status, and whatever else we have created to separate us from others. No prejudice. No pre-judgment based on someone’s affiliation or appearance. Looking beyond the physical and seeing that we all are in the same boat, the same boat of humanity. I wonder why people create things to separate us from each other rather than to unite with one another in humanity. “Humanity” is humankind and also means compassion, brotherly love, benevolence, charity. Inherent in our humanness is the quality to be benevolent and compassionate. I suppose it could have something to do with ego maybe blowing out of proportion to our other human elements. Self-esteem, self-importance, realizing a sense of identity – all associated with the concept of “ego” in balance
is ok. We see fanaticism build when there is no balance or lid to the self-importance. “My way of thinking is superior to yours.” “I am right, – always.” “There is only one way.” So, rather than one boat there are a lot of little boats bobbing around with made-up beliefs that your boat is inferior to mine because of the color of your skin, your nationality, your religion, your politics. And then there is division. And then there is conflict. Perhaps we can take the lesson of how people absolutely rise to help people in dire need to our every day life and realize that social class doesn’t matter, nor does anything else that individualizes us. What matters is what we think, feel, say and do. What matters is how we treat each other and all sentient beings. Simply put, we are born, we live, we die. Why not make it peaceful and happy? Now, more than ever, perhaps it is time to really ponder the words: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” (Mahatma Gandhi) One by one, we can be the example: speaking and acting in unity. I have a feeling that goodness, wholeness and unity will prevail. Do you? “There is no need for temples. No need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples, my philosophy is kindness.” (Dalai Lama) May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace *Lyric from “Michael Row Your Boat Ashore”

Far Out of Rockaway By Lou Pastina
Typically, I don’t like to leave the peninsula on a holiday weekend, even though that was not always the case. Back in the day I would think nothing of piling the kids in the minivan and driving to a far-off location for some family fun and adventure. But with the kids out of the house, I really enjoy
being home and soaking up the beauty of our small slice of paradise here in Rockaway. This year however brought us invitations to two destination weddings, a sure sign that we have arrived at an age when as they say it’s either wakes or weddings; and we certainly prefer the latter. The first wedding earlier this summer took us a to a location we had never been be-

fore, so it was an adventure! And the wedding itself was a blast, with people as close to family as you can get. Although it involved traveling and a longer commitment of time, at this point in our lives, time is readily available!! Being away with so many people that you know and love proved to be really fun. The second wedding was a little more involved because it included driving far north to a location that we had been to with the kids, but had not been back to in almost 20 years. And it was a holiday weekend, breaking the Publisher of this paper’s rule that you never invite anyone from Rockaway away on a holiday weekend for any event. As some of you know, driving is not my thing and a five-hour drive could easily turn into a seven-hour drive, but heading north to the Adirondacks brought a flood of memories from years gone by. If you have never been to Lake Placid, it’s something you should consider. The site of two winter Olympics, the town itself is small but cute, and the
The Rockaway Times two lakes that frame the town, Mirror Lake and Lake Placid are beautiful. In the distance stands the majestic Whiteface Mountain, gazing down and around at the other 45 high peaks in the region. People who climb all 46 high peaks are known as 46er’s. The highest peak is Mt. Marcy, and also takes the honor as highest in New York State. The Adirondacks are protected by the NY State Constitution to be “forever wild,” something I thought only my kids had title to. It’s about six thousand acres of untamed forests and lakes and streams and rivers; in short, an outdoorsman's paradise. Visiting this area also provided an opportunity to relive some family adventures like climbing the summit of Whiteface with our three kids, one of whom was a two-year old with a penchant for running off. As the mermaid and I ascended the cliff to the top, we watched in horror as parents grappled the rocky abutments to get to Continued on page 19

the very top, and we wondered who the hell would do such a thing! Then we remembered: we did too. When we got to the top we visited the rock that the very same blond headed sprite tried to jump over to what we were sure was complete oblivion! Luckily, we had grabbed her, but we wondered on the way down, how did we ever do this? Of course, 20 years makes a big difference. It was wonderful actually to relive that time
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2017 in our lives. And it was fun again to be with so many friends, so close that you considered them family, so far away to celebrate such a happy occasion in such a beautiful setting. We felt doubly blessed this year. Of course, checking the weather back home gave us a bit of schadenfreude, and the prospect of a long drive home was not appetizing, but we realized in reflection, as it was said by an angel to George Bailey, “it really has been a wonderful life.”

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Quinine Questions Quinine has been used since the 1930s to treat muscle cramps, especially nighttime cramps, and more recently it has also been used for restless leg syndrome. In 2006 the FDA cautioned about using quinine for this off-label use because of efficacy and safety concerns. Despite the FDA warning, quinine is still used for muscle cramps. Quinine is also found in lemon bitters and tonic water and it gives both the sharp taste they are known for. Recently a study was performed in the United Kingdom to look at the safety of long-term quinine use. The study looked at more than
175,000 individuals with an average age of 70 and followed them for almost six years. Of the study group there were almost 45,000 individuals who had long-term, daily exposure to quinine with an average daily dose of 203 mg (to put the dose into perspective, a liter of tonic water contains about 100 mg of quinine). Three unexposed people were selected for every one exposed person. The exposed persons had been taking quinine for as long as 25 years. The study found that the death rate of those with longterm quinine exposure was higher than the control group. They also found that the death rate
was dose-dependent, meaning those with higher amounts of quinine ingestion had higher death rates. The highest death rate was in those taking 400mg or more a day. In other words the study found that individuals taking 100mg or more of quinine daily had higher death rates than non-quinine users. The higher death rate was particularly pronounced in those under age 50. All of the quinine was prescribed for muscle cramps or restless leg syndrome. The study did not include tonic water drinkers. One possible explanation for the higher death rate associated with quinine was that the human body may convert quinine into its chemical cousin quinidine. Quinidine is an antiarrhythmic medication used to treat abnormal heart rhythms. Like most antiarrhythmic medications, quinidine may also act as a pro-arrhythmic, meaning that it may induce potentially fatal heart arrhythmias. This pro-arrhythmic effect is why most physicians use caution when treating abnormal heart
The Rockaway Times rhythms with quinidine or its related medications. Of course the study did have its limitations. Firstly the authors did not have access to the actual cause of death in the participants, so it cannot be ascertained whether or not quinine had a role in the person’s demise. Secondly, the average age of the participants was 70 and unfortunately everyone’s risk of death rises as we age. And lastly, they did not factor in disease states that the participants may have had. For example, a 70-year-old person with heart disease, diabetes and hypertension has a higher risk of death than a healthy 70-year-old. So if you are a gin or vodka and tonic person, you might want to limit your tonic intake, just to be on the safe side. But fear not, other tasty cocktail alternatives are always available. If you would like more information on the FDA warning go to: https://www.fda.gov/OHRMS/ DOCKETS/98fr/06-9713.htm Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Despite my numerous attempts to require BIB to justifiably explain why it is necessary to spend $350K to raise my house, when less costly NYC Building Department codes, and HUD required alternatives are available, BIB had repeatedly and defiantly stated: “it has already answered all my questions and has nothing further to add.” Therefore, I am requesting that our meeting be video and audibly recorded.
I must admit to being mentally-challenged, since I cannot understand where or when BIB has justifiably explained its position to waste countless taxpayer dollars, and thereby force my criminal complicity in the process. Therefore, under the Freedom of Information Act, and whatever rights and representations can be afforded to a mentally-challenged person, I want you to review for recorded posterity, your explanations of the issues I have raised, so I can make an informed decision, and in the process, everyone can bear witness to your careful stewardship of their hardearned taxpayer dollars. Please schedule the meeting to allow sufficient time for me to notify media, governmental agencies, politicians and the general public who may wish to attend. Plan(t) for Tomorrow By Artie Wallace
I am thrilled to say that this article (or a variation of it) is being read by people throughout the country. Seasons may have already changed for some, so keep these tips in mind for next season. I have done articles on preparing your home for the winter. We should include preparing your plants too. I am covering a few of the basics. Add some online research and it will apply to most plants. Potted plants: You may think it’s as simple as bringing them in for the winter, but there is more to it. As you prepare to bring them in, some plants may be outgrowing their pots. This is the time to transplant them to a larger pot.
While you’re transplanting them, add some fresh potting soil (mixed with the older soil). Add some plant food and/or fertilizer to help them through the adjustment from natural sunlight to indoor lighting. Although plants may look good placed throughout the house, keep in mind some need to be placed near a window for natural lighting. Don’t forget that if you put your plants near heaters and/or radiators, it may dry them out.
Outdoor Plants: Some plants you will leave outdoors year round. Some need to be covered while others need to be pruned. It is best to research the types of plants in your garden and cross reference them with the seasonal changes in your area.
Planted plants (in the garden): When transferring plants from your garden to pots, to bring them in for the winter, the process is basically the same as repotting. There is an important difference. When repotting, you’re transferring all the roots from
one pot to another. When moving a plant from the garden you may cut some of the roots. As a rule of thumb you should dig up the plant in a radius of three inches from the plant for If there is a project you would smaller plants, medium plants it is safe to go with five to seven like to see in The DIYer, email inches, and eight to ten inches me at rocktimesdiy@gmail. com for larger plants, on average.
THANK YOU FOR WELCOMING US INTO YOUR COMMUNITY!
Note: This is a basic guideline. Each plant may require specific needs. It is best to know what type of plants you have and check the care recommendations for each plant. Do a quick Google search to find the proper care instructions for your specific plant.

Firmly rooted in the arts, education and community, the 501c3 non-profit is seeking candidates for its volunteer Board of Directors. All members interested in voting in this year’s election must be paid members by September 15. Any member interested in running for the Board of Directors must have been a paid member for the past 12 months, and currently remain a paid member in good standing. The deadline to be considered as a candidate is October 15.
Requirements to become a candidate, and a list of open positions, will be sent upon request. Email RAA Election Committee chairperson John Grillo at j.grillo@ raanyc.org. Moms And Teens Dear Enchantress, I'm a Mother of a teenage daughter, and I NEED HELP. She is a monster, she is mean to me, changes moods on a dime, and never wants to be told what to do. I don't remember being this out of control when I was her age. She goes to school, pretty much did her HW all last year, and overall I think she is a good kid. Our relationship feels horrible every day. I'm scared this isn't getting any better, the new school year is starting and I see she is being so critical of herself and it's triggering memories of my own past
(and current) insecurities. I know you used to work with kids and teens, help? I'm a single parent and already feel pressed for everything. Dear Mama of a butterfly coming out of her cocoon, Thank YOU so much for writing; your voice speaks for many. I would like to give you four tips for having a more enchanting relationship with your daughter. First, take a deep breath, reaching out for support is the best thing, you don't have to do this totally alone. Your daughter's emotions are a lot for you to hold and

Second, give yourself the permission to NOT fix her problems, give her total space to make mistakes, I can't say that enough. Let her have her early inner life experiences. Of course safety is always the first check in, if she is reckless in any way, always step in. Third, your actions towards yourself matter more than anything you will say, give advice about or teach. She is more connected to seeing what you do in your own life, than the "wisdom" or problem solvers you speak. SO that means giving her space when she switches moods, give her physical space, let her have her version of a tantrum. Because you are her mother, the natural instinct IS to fix her problems or offer her many solutions. She will feel empowered when she finds her own solution and pssst: it will be a solution you may have given her in the
past, but there is NO WAY she will admit you are right. This means you have to be more trusting that you have done a great job and trust that she will make sound choices. As hard as it may feel, give her acknowledgments for activities, behaviors and compliments about her looks even if she bites your head off. Lastly, be compassionate with yourself, use the ways you do to take mini breaks and have things that you enjoy doing that bring you back to center. Take these four tips and run with them. AND excellent news and timing on this: I am leading a workshop for teen girls October 1 at Rockaway LOVE (90-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) at 3 p.m. Enchantress Shane coaches and guides women wanting more magic and confidence in their lives. From The Rockaway Business Alliance YOU CAN SHOP LOCAL! HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD: Access to local resources in Rockaway has improved dramatically in recent years; local shops are finally here and thriving. From the Riis Park Beach Bazaar to Edgemere Farm, there is a myriad of shops and experiences for residents and tourists alike to enjoy. For a long time it has been the perception that Rockaway has nothing to offer — this is no longer the case. The real push is to let people know what is here and that they can, and SHOULD, shop local. It is our job as the Rockaway Business Alliance to help you discover what is happening in our local business community. The Riis Park Beach Baazar offers pop-up shops on the weekends, plus eateries and live bands for beachgoers and residents alike. Beach 129th Street is packed with businesses from end to end including a florist, a liquor store, multiple restaurants and bars,
gift shops, clothing stores, nail and beauty salons, a grocery, a bakery and more. Beach 116th Street is also packed with shops for your convenience, including a butcher shop, a hardware store, multiple gift and sundry shops, clothing stores, a stationary store, a spa, a bike shop, multiple eateries and bars, and of course, the boardwalk. Beach 108th to 115th streets offer up a deli, a frozen yogurt shop, a bank, hair salon, a gym, and a beauty bar. Beach 92nd Street is filling up with brand new wine bars, beer gardens, eateries, a fitness center, an ice cream shop and bakery, a few surf shops, vintage clothing and furniture, and more. Arverne offers a smoothie shop, a massive community/ co-working space, a surf shop, Thai food, pizza and more! Edgemere is home to a beautiful half-acre urban farm which
supplies businesses all over the peninsula with home-grown produce and farm-fresh eggs! There are many reasons to shop local. Convenience is perhaps the best reason. Why spend time, money and gas (not to mention the traffic) to drive to the mall, when chances are, what you’re looking for is just around the corner. More personalized service is another. When you shop local, you deal with people who know you! The personalized service beats anything you’ll experience online or at the mall. Shopping becomes a much friendlier experience when you can walk into a store and be greeted with a smile by someone who knows your name. Local shops cater better to the demographic of the area. Even if you don’t know your local retailers personally, chances are they are keyed in to the demographics of the neighborhood, and carry items that suit those specific needs. Local shopping adds
value, diversity and character to our neighborhoods. As our communities continue to grow, we encourage local business and residents to join the Rockaway Business Alliance. By increasing our membership, we can continue to close the gaps between all the various business corridors and make Rockaway one single community. Says State Assembly Member Stacey Pheffer-Amato: "Rockaway is ALL ABOUT our local businesses. When our small, local shops and restaurants do well, we all do well — and everyone can continue to come and enjoy this jewel of a seaside community. I buy almost everything at small local shops. I urge you to check out everything small businesses in Rockaway have in store for you!" This article was submitted by The Rockaway Business Alliance. SPOTTED: All Over International man of intrigue, Father Jim Cunningham, was spotted rocking The Rockaway Times tee in Hong Kong. And Bobby Dyrenforth was the best dressed guy at Buxton's Barbecue in Asheville, NC. What’s Beach Flix without a RT t-shirt in the audience? Keith Sullivan spotted this one. And Lake George never looked so good as Mike O’Connor, Cecilia O’Connor and Patricia and Jimmy Kohler teamed up for this great shot. Jim Supple knew he’d spot colorful vintage cars on a recent trip to Cuba but he didn’t expect to see something just as colorful as the island itself: a Rockaway Times t-shirt in a Havana barbershop. James Dionne got himself a rare, limited long sleeve Rockaway Times shirt and knew it was the perfect look for late summer in Iceland. And we know there’s no eclipsing The Rockaway Times t-shirt as Steven Feuer takes a look up at the sky last Monday.

Summer Classic Wraps Up The Season The 33rd edition of the St. Francis Summer Classic recently wrapped up play at the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard with a plethora of championship games. The Girls Grammar Senior title was first up and Nicole Frontera Beauty edged Walsh Management. The Women's Open crown was next and Boardwalk Pizza showed that youth was ready to be served in a win over DKT HVAC. Thursday evening featured three finals with Greene Machine knocking off Pipin's Pub in the gym for the Girls High School title. Outside, the bleachers surrounded Court 2 for the marquee Boys High School/Men's Open Doubleheader. Rathbones pulled out a thrilling win over Flynn & Flynn. Caiazzo Plumbing then
came back from an early deficit to put away the Rock Park All-Stars. On Friday, the Summer Classic then offered its version of Angels in the Outfield as Chelsea Irish took the Boys Grammar Middle and Boys Grammar Senior championships. Longtime Summer Classic stalwart George Long had passed away earlier in the week but was looking down to see his son Keith Long guide the two victories for Chelsea Irish with his grandsons, Quinn Long on the Grammar Middle squad, Luke Long on the Grammar Senior team, a day after Aidan Long of Rathbones began the championship parade. It was truly a summer classic. It will be hard for season 34 to top. See you next summer.

Navillus Construction Gifts Far Rock Children a Trip to Dorney Park On August 30, some Far Rockaway youth enjoyed a special trip to Dorney Park in Allentown, PA courtesy of Navillus Contracting, a NYC-based unionized contracting company, who is currently working with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) at Arverne’s Ocean Bay Apartments - Oceanside to restore and repair the complex that was devastated by Superstorm Sandy. The contractor worked with the Ocean Bay Garden Green Committee to send the children on this special trip as a thank you to the community for their patience and understanding during the construction project. “As Navillus Contracting continues to restore the development devastated by Superstorm Sandy, we are honored to have the opportunity to give back to a community that has gone through so much devastation,” said Donal O’Sullivan, founder and chief executive officer of Navillus Contracting.
As news outlet, DnaInfo reported back in February 2016: “NYCHA, which has long come under fire from residents for a backlog of delays in fixing maintenance and security problems, began work-

Why????” Livingston said. “I’m not sure who's responsible, who owns the property and I’m fed up with the way it looks and having to step off the sidewalk and into the street in order to walk down my own block.” By Kami-Leigh Agard If this property is yours, do the right thing—clean up! Did you know that September is National Chicken Month? (Nicely coinciding with National Potato Month, but let’s leave that to the side). And with Labor Day behind us, some of you may already have packed up your grill, but dear readers, no need to run around like a headless chicken. The Rockaway Times hatched up an idea to ask locals about where to indulge your fetish for superior, finger lickin’ good chicken. Here’s what came clucking… Jeffrey Williams-Maisonett, Arverne resident, recommends DredSurfer Grill (16-27 Seagirt Blvd., on the boardwalk). “I
love their jerk chicken. I’m not a fan of chicken on the bone, but their chicken is so tenderly cooked that the meat falls right off the bone. The seasoning is just right, not too spicy nor too sweet, just perfectly balanced. I usually get it to go with rice and peas or french fries. However, if you want to stay and eat, the setting is perfect. Where else can you get reasonably-priced, delicious food, while facing the ocean and listening to good music?” Joe Popp, Far Rockaway resident, says his chicken of choice is at the BayHouse (500 Bayside Dr., Breezy Point). “I recently went there on a whim, and

This may sound like an unusual combination for some of you, but imagine expertly seasoned chicken wings, fried to perfect with spaghetti tossed with homemade marinara sauce and topped with fresh parmesan and mozzarella cheese? Yum! And finally, looking for fresh chicken?.Look no further than
Curran’s Superior Meats (239 Beach 116th St.). Tom Murphy, Belle Harbor resident and proprietor — “We are the only butcher on the peninsula, and offer a wide variety of fresh chicken delivered fresh daily, including Bell & Evans free range chicken, which is more pricey, but totally worth it because of the quality. Whether you want your chicken whole, cubed, stripped, skinned, boned, sliced to your desired thickness or seasoned to your liking, at Curran’s, we are all about service. During the fall, we also prepare fully cooked, well-seasoned barbecue chicken and our immensely popular homemade chicken soup. Curran’s has been serving the peninsula since 1960. After Sandy, we were displaced from our original location on Beach 129th street, but with the community’s enormous help relocated to Beach 116th. We love and know each and everyone of our customers, and willing to go the distance to please them.”
