Doggone Lucky
Margarey: one lucky dog. By Katie McFadden
Jamaica Bay is a usual hotspot for fishing boats, the ferry and jet skis, but on Monday, July 30, something you don’t normal see was spotted bobbing up and down along the boat wakes—a dog. Luckily, due to the right people in the right place at the right time, this story has a happy ending. It was a seemingly uneventful Monday at The Wharf, when suddenly something went awry. “I was on the phone with my wife in the back room when I saw Sheila Mac and another girl run to the end of the dock. I told my wife, something is wrong,” Bob Leckie, owner of The Wharf recalled. “I get down there and say, ‘what’s the matter?’ They said, ‘It’s a dog!’ and they pointed toward the water at this little dog being swept away by the current.” Luckily for the dog, two angels aboard a Karen Ann charter boat were nearby. Leckie and the ladies on the dock quickly got the attention of Captain Vinnie Calabro, of Howard Beach, and Tony Ambroseccio, of Belle Harbor, as they were enjoying their day out on the water. “We didn’t have a charter that morning, so Tony and I were just out fishing and we pass by The Wharf and see a couple of people excited on the dock,” Calabro said. “They said, ‘there’s a dog that fell in the water, he’s drifting away!’ We look up and see this little head bobbing in the water.” Without hesitation, Calabro and Ambroseccio went after the animal. “I wouldn’t even think twice about saving it. You just do it,” Calabro said.
They caught up to the dog in the water at around Beach 123rd. “By the time they rescued the dog, it had gone six blocks away with the current,” Leckie said. “We lost sight of it a couple times.” Luckily, the fishermen were able to spot it as they got closer. A wave of relief spread as onlookers watched the fishermen pull the dog out of the water, but the ordeal wasn’t over yet. “The dog jumped right out of the boat. It was frightened and shaking,” Leckie said. The fishermen once again retrieved the panicked animal and were eventually able to bring it to safety at The Wharf’s dock. “Everybody in the restaurant stood up and clapped when the fishermen got the dog back to the dock,” Leckie said. “This was our little good deed for the day. It put a smile on everyone’s face,” Calabro said. Following reports of a dog running around Beach Channel Drive, and later spotted in the bay, a police officer had arrived at the bayside restaurant and was on the scene to comfort the distressed pooch. “Officer Wiley held the dog in his arms while he tried to calm it down and I got my finger on the collar. The dog had a tag and we were able to contact the owner,” Leckie said. After spending a weekend away in Pennsylvania, Peggy Sacca and her husband, Peter had just pulled into their driveway on the beach block of Beach 118th, when they received a call they weren’t expecting. “We get a call from our son, Petey and all he says to my husband is, ‘Somebody called and said one of your dogs is in the bay.’ We started freaking out,” Sacca said. Sacca’s husband

ran into the house to see which of their three dogs was missing. It was Margarey, a tiny Shih Tzu that weighs just 12 pounds. “After hearing she was in the bay, my husband grabs a towel from the laundry and we take the car over and park in Duane Reade and run over to The Wharf like crazy people. We didn’t know if she was dead or alive. We get to The Wharf and see a crowd of people and police on the dock and one of the cops is holding Margarey, wrapped up in a sweatshirt. She was in shock,” Sacca said. However, the lucky dog’s demeanor changed immediately after spotting her human. “Once
bones because she got under an impossibly small section of the fence. The police told us that they got a report of a small dog running up and down the street. She managed to cross Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Newport and Beach Channel Drive. We were told that people were chasing her to try to catch her and she decided that she wasn’t going to get caught,” Sacca said. It is believed that the dog had jumped through an opening in the fence near Duane Reade or the 9/11 Tribute Park, which is how she wound up in Jamaica Bay. “This dog won’t even go for a grooming. She’s the hardest to manage when you give her a bath and here she is swim-

she had it in her arms, the dog started licking her face and we knew she was the owner,” Leckie said. How did little Margarey pull off her great escape? Sacca’s children had been dog-sitting for the weekend, but were at work on Monday morning when Margarey became antsy, wondering when mom and dad would return. “Our neighbor told us that they heard her whining earlier in the day and I guess she decided to try to find us,” Sacca said. “We had just recently installed a brand new fence around our yard, after finally replacing the one we lost after Hurricane Sandy. Apparently Margarey thinks she’s a mouse with no
ming in Jamaica bay,” Sacca said. Everyone was grateful for a happy ending. “This could have gone wrong in so many ways. She was extremely lucky,” Sacca said. “I just want to thank God for every person that assisted. Thank you for not ignoring this little dog and knowing that this was a problem and acting on it. We’d be lost without her.” Sacca says they’ve since blocked the opening in their fence and will keep a close eye on their dogs. “We’re never going away without them again,” she said. “Had those fishermen not gotten the dog, she wouldn’t have survived. It was really miraculous,” Leckie said. “God was good to that dog that day,” Calabro said.

St. John’s Receives Major Money for Maternity Ward More upgrades will be coming to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. On Friday, August 3, Councilman Donovan Richards announced $1,025,000 in City Council funding dedicated to the local hospital’s new Labor and Maternity Ward. On Tuesday, August 7, St. John’s finally opened its new Emergency Room after Phase 1 of its renovation was completed. However, a few days prior, Richards also shared some good news about major funding for a new Labor and Maternity Ward at Rockaway’s only hospital. The announcement comes at a time when it is desperately needed. St. John’s serves more than 110,000 residents. According to a 2016 Department of Health
and Mental Hygiene report, New York City had an infant mortality rate of 4.3 (per 1,000) infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 2015, a slight increase since 2014 (4.2 per 1,000 live births). In 2016, the Rockaway’s infant mortality rate was 5.2. From 2013-2015, the Queens maternal mortality rate was 22.0 (per 100,000 births). In communities of color and low-income areas, the disparities are even more severe. In 2016, the City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) created a Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) surveillance system using measurement methods developed by the CDC. In a 2017 City Limits op-ed, Hannah Searing, Deborah L. Kaplan and George L. Askew representing the Bureau of Maternal, Infant, and Reproductive Health in the Division of Family and Child Health
at DOHMH said, “each year in New York City approximately 3,000 women suffer a life-threatening complication during labor and delivery. For every woman who dies from a pregnancy-related condition, 100 women almost die. In addition, SMM increased 28 percent in New York City from 2008 to 2012, from 197 severe events per 10,000 deliveries in 2008 to 253 in 2012, and the percentage was higher than the national rate. The research also exposed racial inequities. “To address these devastating disparities, the State and City must invest more in our local hospitals to improve the health and safety of mothers and infants, especially in communities of color,” Councilman Donovan Richards said. “While we seek to add more healthcare options on the peninsula, we also have to vastly improve the conditions in our
current health facilities. It is an honor to secure this critical funding for St. John’s and all of the mothers and babies who will benefit from this new state-of-the-art labor and maternity ward. I’d also like to thank Speaker Corey Johnson for his partnership in providing the necessary funding to move this project across the finish line.” “Our city is facing a maternal mortality crisis, so now more than ever, it is imperative that New York mothers receive the best medical services,” Speaker Corey Johnson said. “The Council’s $1.025 million investment in St. John’s Hospital's Labor and Maternity Ward ensures that the female and infant residents of Far Rockaway will be treated with the utmost care and attention in the only hospital that provides maternity healthcare in the area.”

***** Congratulations to the Final 15. We have to say, The Rockaway Times Photo Contest is underrated as something that makes Rockaway more beautiful! Thanks to all who entered the contest (hey, get out there with your cameras now and save your best for the 2019 contest!). The winner will be selected this Sunday, August 12 at Caracas on the Boardwalk and Beach 106th Street at 10 a.m. ***** This Saturday a lot of locals head to Riis Park. Why? Well, it’s the playoffs for the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League. ***** There’s nothing like 90-plus degree weekend days to make the whole Rockaway peninsula a vehicular insane asylum. One person posted her experience saying she was by the
THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2018 Verrazano Bridge on the Belt at 1:20 p.m. and got to Breezy Point at 3:30 p.m. Another said it took an hour from Aviator on Flatbush Avenue to Belle Harbor (that’s usually about seven minutes). And then there were the stories of cars just parking in private driveways or anywhere a car might fit. Shore Front Parkway was a mess. As some have pointed out, illegally parked cars along Shore Front are obstacles for rescue operations. ***** We got more mail complaints this week. We suggest you call Rep. Meeks, he’s the fed rep. Or if your complaint involves the 11694 Post Office, try calling the supervisor at 718-634-6057. ***** We had gone to press last week and didn’t have any details about the fatal accident that occurred last Wednesday around noontime. Patrick Kenny, 88, was killed when a driver in a Ford F-150 was making a U-turn at Beach 116th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard when he accidently hit the
Page 7
gas instead of the brake and hit Mr. Kenny. Our thoughts are with the Kenny family. ***** Reunion news. We had wrong contact info last week regarding the Nazareth - St. Brendan's Class of ‘73 reunion. Classes will be celebrating their 45th anniversary at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club on Saturday, September 15 from 7-11 p.m. For tickets, contact Michael DiFede at mdifede@bergmanrealty.com or 908-337-2882. ***** Happy anniversary to Esther Konig. Two years ago she told a crowd that they would hear “within three months” about development of the Sand Bar and the string of vacant stores on Beach 116th Street. A year later she said she and her partners were “in serious negotiations” regarding a sale. Oh, and more recently, she’s said the Park Inn will no longer be an Adult Home but will be “completely redone” as an assisted-living facility. She also said, “Good things come to those who wait.” There’s waiting and
then there’s waiting enough. Meanwhile the condo across the street is going up quickly and the dilapidated theater was sold and will be torn down (leaving the Konig eyesore more sore than ever). ***** We know there’s a ton of fun going on in the summer, but if you’re usually a churchgoer, don’t forget about church! Christ Presbyterian Church By the Sea in Broad Channel has suspended church services for August because of such low attendance. Paired with a lack of rentals for the hall, the Church is currently facing a financial crisis and cannot afford to open with such poor attendance. Services will resume on Sunday, September 2 and the future of the church will be discussed. ***** Welcome, Yamila! Elderly Man Killed in Car Accident On Wednesday, August 1, an elderly man was hit by a car around Beach 116th Street. He later died from his injuries. On Wednesday, just after noon, Patrick Kenny, 88, was walking home with bags of groceries, when he was hit by a 2001 Ford F-150 while crossing Rockaway Beach Boulevard near Beach 116th Street. The strike sent Kenny flying into the air. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition and unfortunately died from his injuries the following day. The driver, Kenlyn Franklyn, 60, remained at the scene. According to the New York Daily News, investigators believe Franklyn was making an illegal U-turn from the eastbound lane of Rockaway Beach Blvd. to the westbound lane when he accidentally hit
the gas instead of the brake and struck Kenny. Franklyn, of Brooklyn, remained at the scene. Cops charged him with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care. He was given a desk appearance ticket and is expected to answer the charges later this month, authorities said. Franklyn was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care. He will have to appear in court to answer the charges later this month. This incident comes just a few weeks after a woman was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle on Beach 73rd Street. NYPD has since stepped up their enforcement of Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative to reduce accidents.

Hot Dog!
ROCKAWAY DOG HOUSE GOES RED HOT! By Kami-Leigh Agard
Let’s be frank. Rockaway native, Kenny Good is no newbie to the restaurant business. Good, together with his brother, Steve, owned quite a successful repertoire of restaurants, including the legendary Beach Club, Sunset Diner, Delicious Endings, All American Eatery and Last Stop. And now after a 10-year hiatus, the resilient restaurant entrepreneur, Kenny Good, is back on his own with a new venture, Rockaway Dog House (RDH), and judging from the droves of people queuing up to grab his food at his retro, Playland-themed space, all looks good for Good. Plus with the announcement that the Dog House is now exclusively selling the pioneer of juicy hot dogs, Feltman’s of Coney Island — locals — get ready to eat your buns off! According to Good, he’s been in the restaurant business since he was a teenager. “My brother, Steve, and I first owned Last Stop on Beach 116th Street. Following my father’s footsteps, we were both union steamfitters at the time, making good money. However after we were fired, we knew the guy who was selling the place, so we pooled our money together and gave him a down payment and he held the mortgage for us for seven years, and we just grew from there. “As kids, when my father owned the Belle Harbor Travel Agency across the street, we always used to go there when at the time, it was called Surf Snacks. “Last Stop had full service inside all year long, but during the summer, we had a window, where we used to sell hot dogs, soft served ice cream, knishes — basically beach food. On Sundays, we would only keep the indoor restaurant open for breakfast for locals until noon, then after just sell through the window,” Good said. After Last Stop, Good said he and his brother continued with other restaurants, but The Beach Club was the highlight. “The Beach Club was great. We had the best staff. At one time, there
was about 80 people working there. We used to have a lot of parties, and overall it was a lot of fun!” he reminisced. However according to Good, things changed when they decided to buy the Ram’s Horn Diner at the other end of Beach 116th Street. “We turned the Beach Club into a catering hall, and focused all our resources on the diner. Unfortunately, the diner business has such little profit margin. For large restaurants, you really make your money with liquor, beer and wine, this is why the Beach Club in it’s hey day was so profitable compared to the diner. However, now reflecting on all our experiences, these were all tough lessons that had to be learned,” Good said. After moving to Atlantic Beach, then Florida and now in Broad Channel, Good said he feels he’s back to his center. “I worked for FedEx for 10 years, and the food business was calling me, and now here I am at the Rockaway Dog House,” he said. Good said local property owner, David Selig, communicated with him that the former tenants of where the Dog House is located were not returning, and asked if he was interested. Good, the always-ambitious entrepreneur jumped on the opportunity. “David called me in the last week of April. I just had a short window of time to get this up. My brother, Steve, flew in from Florida to help me transform the space. I envisioned something retro, colorful and welcoming like the old Playland, just selling basic beach food like hot dogs, fries, knishes, sausage and pepper heroes, corn, coffee, fresh juices, etc.,” Good said. However, with the site being the old home of the original Rockaway Taco, Good said people also came looking to get their taco fix. So he expanded his menu to include mahi-mahi fish, veggie, chorizo, steak, chicken and shrimp tacos. He said that the mahi-mahi is wild caught and all the produce he uses is locally-sourced from Edgemere Farms, and other

community gardens. Though the fish tacos are his top-selling item, Good expects that to change with the recent announcement that the Dog House is selling Feltman’s of Coney Island hot dogs. “When I heard that local restaurant, The Wharf, and Manhattan’s iconic McSorley’s were selling Feltman’s, I contacted Feltman’s owner, Michael Quinn. Their hot dogs are so juicy, the casing nice and firm, the filling nitrate-free, and not to mention the spices are so well balanced and have a little kick. I just knew this would be perfect for the Dog House,” Good said. As for Quinn, who has Breezy Point roots, said he knew Feltman’s and Good’s Dog House were a perfect marriage. Quinn, also an entrepreneur, resurrected Feltman’s hot dogs in 2015, 61 years later after the hot dog pioneering brand closed in 1954. Quinn said, “After my middle brother perished in the 9/11 attacks, my other brother and I wanted to start a business in honor of him. He always had dreams of being an entrepreneur, and after some brainstorming over beer and yes — hot dogs, I came up with the idea of resurrecting the original hot dog, Feltman’s. I am a Coney Island tour historian, and was always intrigued with how Nathan’s usurped Feltman’s place as the king of hot dogs.” After all, before Nathan’s, there
was Feltman’s. The tasty Feltman’s frankfurter was pioneered in 1867 by German immigrant Charles Feltman, considered the inventor of the hot dog on a bun. Feltman arrived in America from Germany in 1856, already familiar with the frankfurter from his home country. The hot dogs, which were known as Coney Island red hots, sold for ten cents each, but interestingly, Feltman’s grew into a restaurant that at one point was dubbed the largest restaurant in the world. However, in 1916, an employee of Feltman’s, Nathan Handwerker, changed the course of hot dog history by opening his own restaurant, Nathan’s Famous. However, judging from the reviews, Feltman’s is top dog once again and the juicy red hots are a new hit on the menu at the Rockaway Dog House. Good said, “Initially I was thinking that RDH was just going to be a summer establishment, but with the reception from locals and visitors alike, I’m aiming to make it year round. I built an indoor space keeping with the retro and cozy theme. Folks love the food and I love dishing up the best for them.” Rockaway Dog House is located at 95-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd. For further information, including opening hours, check them out on Facebook and Instagram.

Arts in Parts Needs Your Help To Secure A New Home By Kami-Leigh Agard
Since 2012 in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, when many youth across the peninsula and Broad Channel were displaced not just from their homes, but also schools, a dedicated coterie of artists, educators and environmentalists banded together to found, Arts in Parts, a multi-faceted arts program offering children a safe haven, where they could continue to learn and grow through arts and hands-on experience with Rockaway’s unique bay and ocean natural habitats. However since last year, this treasured program is now homeless, and needs the community’s help to secure a new home. And here’s how you can help — donate to their online Kickstarter campaign, Arts in Parts' Rockaway Campus-in-a-Container. In late 2017, Arts in Parts lost its longtime home base on Beach 96th Street, where according to Arts in Parts
co-founder, Diwa Pamrong, hundreds of local youth passed through their various no-cost programs, including weekend summer workshops and day summer camps both conducted in July and August, and after school programs in the fall. Pamrong said, “After months of uncertainty and hunting for an appropriate space, where our students can utilize Rockaway’s rich waterfront habitat
to supplement their science, environmental and arts education, Marina59 in Arverne, has generously offered us a site for long-term use, right on Jamaica Bay. We aim to install a shipping container to serve as the home base for our ongoing programs. Marina59 is ideal because many artists operate in that area, and our students will get to work closely with them, while also having clos-
er access to living habitats on the bay. If we reach our fundraising goal of $5,000 by Monday, August 13, we will be able to achieve that and more by continuing what we have been doing with local youth since Sandy — enriching their education through art in Rockaway’s natural waterfront canvas.” Diwa, who just before Sandy, graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Arts (BSA) degree from Parsons School of Design in Brooklyn, joined the droves of volunteers who came to help with relief efforts. “I just came out here to help, but after meeting so many parents and families, I felt that the children needed a creative outlet, while continuing their education. A group of us started simply by offering free art classes at a warehouse on Beach 97th Street, then we got a more permanent space on Beach 96th Street. The amount Continued on page 15

ARTS IN PARTS
Continued from Page 14 of local children that came in and out of the program was so amazing and humbling. We don’t charge for any of our programs, however to fund the basic necessities for the program, we just do grassroots fundraising and occasionally secure some grants. However, now that we lost our home, we unitedly decided it was urgent to launch this Kickstarter campaign. “Rockaway has a lot to offer for youth just with its unique bay and ocean front habitats, which most NYC students don’t have access to. We see how the children love and appreciate Rockaway’s wildlife and beauty, and Arts in Parts is determined to be an outlet for them to learn and develop with both the bay and the beach,” Diwa said. Once they secure their new permanent venue at Marine59, Arts In Parts plans to conduct their first program with digital art nonprofit, Rhizome, for a summer day camp inspired
THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2018 by the organization’s Seven on Seven program for art and technology collaborations. The summer camp, called “SEA LEVEL,” will focus on art, technology, and the environment through a series of artist-led workshops and projects. Also they will debut a Welding at Arts in Parts program, where each day will be led by a guest artist, who will create unique new artworks with the participants. Several camp days will also be held at Edgemere Farm, a nearby half-acre urban farm that serves the community as a place for teaching and learning about growing plants, bees, and chickens. The funding from this Kickstarter will go to the purchase, delivery, and installation of items needed for the new Marina59 campus, including a shipping container, tent, and tables. Any additional funds raised will go to additional fit-out and to enriching the Arts in Parts program. As of press time, Arts in Parts’ Kickstarter online campaign has raised $2,677 of its $5,000 goal.
Page 15
Note that this fundraiser is all or nothing, so if the goal is not met by Monday, August 13 by 3 p.m., the program will receive nil. If the campaign fails, Arts in Parts will run the summer day camp as planned with a more lightweight tent setup. If it is on track for successful funding, their fiscal sponsor, Rhizome, will order the container prior to the campaign’s end date so that it can be on site for the August
13 launch of their SEA LEVEL program. Also, join Arts in Parts at their fundraising dinner at Brothers Rockaway from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Beach 106th Street concession.

Steve Belson Memorial Pays Tribute to a Rockaway Legend By Yamila Frej
On Saturday, August 4, both longtime residents and day-trippers commemorated one of Rockaway’s legends at the 17th Annual Steve Belson Memorial Ocean Swim. Belson was a lifeguard for 10 years before joining the FDNY. During the September 11, 2001 attacks, he perished in his last act of service saving lives in the World Trade Center, an embodiment of his character. Originally from Flushing, Belson began spending time in Rockaway during his midteens. He became a lifeguard at Beach 92nd Street, where he met former lifeguard and now event organizer, Sean Kellar. “There was always a healthy competition about who was better: who were better lifeguards, frankly who were better partiers, who could hold more beers than the next guy,
but it was all in good fun, Kellar said. “We had good parties together, good camaraderie, good lifeguard competitions for years in the ocean, and we had a fond love of rock and roll music. Belson and his friends were often in the audience at Grateful Dead and Hot Tuna concerts. “We shared that passion and it was a fun time,
it was a simpler time, Kellar reminisced. With a new stage of his life just beginning, Belson continued to lifeguard for 10 years while his name remained on the civil service list to become a firefighter. When his name was called, he joined the fire department at Ladder 24 in Manhattan. After a back inju-
ry on the job, Belson rehabilitated himself and returned to duty “when many people could have and would have retired at that point, Kellar said. Soon after he resumed work, Belson was called to the World Trade Center on September 11. At 50 years old and after 22 years of service, Belson’s life was tragically cut short. To celebrate a life spent looking out for others, for 17 years, the Steve Belson Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded lifeguards with $1,000 scholarships. On Saturday, many joined for the ceremony commemorating Belson’s life on the beach where Belson lifeguarded: Beach 92nd Street, since renamed Bell’s Beach in honor of the local hero. Organized by Belson’s friends and fellow firefighters, John Mcguire, Pat Savage, Continued on page 17

and Sean Kellar, the inaugural event was supposed to be a one-time Bell’s Beach remembrance swim and Fort Tilden music festival in 2002. “I needed to channel my anger after September 11, 2001 and turn 2002 into something positive. That’s what got this whole thing started,” Kellar said. About turning his grief into goodness, Kellar explained that the plan was “to do something positive in Steve’s honor and that’s good for Rockaway, when Steve was a longtime Rockaway lifeguard, firefighter, and all around water guy.” When more than 1,000 people attended, Belson’s mother proposed having the event again to continue remembering Belson and financially assisting lifeguards in college. This idea prompted the process of gaining status as a tax-exempt charity. Each year since, the scholarship fund has intentionally kept a low profile with no major sponsorships. According to Kellar, “We didn’t
want any big corporations doing it, it’s all local donations and t-shirt sales.” And yet, the Steve Belson Memorial Scholarship Fund has been able to award 138 lifeguards with more than $140,000 over the past 17 years. “The lifeguards that had won the awards early on had firsthand memories of Belson and 9/11,” Kellar said. “Nowadays, most of the kids who are applying were born, but they were probably in diapers. Their experience with this is either from history books or in talking to their parents or neighbors.” The memorial swim serves as a method of raising awareness for younger generations as well. This year, chosen by an anonymous selection committee, four Rockaway lifeguards were awarded $1,000 to help with college expenses. One of the winners, Amber Feerin, has been lifeguarding for five years in Breezy Point. On winning the award, Feerin said, “It feels great. It’s such a good event to have and I’m very honored.” Feerin plans on using the money she won for textbooks for
Page 17
school. This year, the event’s usual half-mile swim was modified to a ceremonial dip in front of the 97th Street concession due to beach closures. On Sunday, Metropolitan Swim Masters participated in a one- and two-mile swim event as part of the Steve Belson Memorial Masters Swim, sponsored by U.S. Masters Swimming, Metro Division. Additionally, the music festival, usually held on the evening of the swim, will be held on September 28 instead. “It has evolved somewhat over time but ultimately it’s about remembering a really good friend who didn’t want to be a hero and certainly didn’t want to be dead,” Kellar said. Before Saturday’s ceremony, Ladder 137 of the Beach 116th Street firehouse raised the American flag from their truck as many came to hon-
or the life of Belson. Following the moving words of his commemoration speech, Kellar encouraged guests to “tap the railing [under the Belson plaque] three times: for life, liberty, and freedom, which do not come free.” Belson will always be remembered for paying for these things with the ultimate sacrifice.

A Train Back in Time The old light bulbs flickered in and out as the old 1930s R1/9 vintage train slowly made it way out of the New York Transit Museum’s (NYTM) Court Street on Saturday, August 4, for the NYTM’s Nostalgia Ride to the Rockaways. As fans spun on the ceilings of the old train cars, attempting to cool down passengers on the hot summer day, jazz band Cait and the Critters played some swing tunes in the caboose. It’s Fishy More people than ever take fish oil dietary supplements – around eight percent in 2012 compared to five percent five years earlier, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Advice from the American Heart Association (AHA), including a 2017 science advisory recommendation, is to consider fish oil supplementation for patients with a recent myocardial infarction, or heart attack. Unfortunately, a recent analysis of 10 large clinical trials came to the disappointing conclusion that the popular capsules do little to protect people with heart disease. This new analysis, which was published in January of this
year, looked at randomized trials of marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements involving almost 78,000 study participants with a history of coronary artery disease, stroke, or diabetes. The trials lasted over four years and compared fish oil to placebo or no treatment. All told, the fish oil supplements did not reduce the risk of coronary heart disease deaths, fatal or non-fatal strokes, revascularization procedures (coronary artery bypass surgery and stents), and all-cause mortality. The supplements also didn’t protect against major vascular events in any subgroups, including people with a history of heart
disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, or statin (i.e. Lipitor) use. These findings are just the latest evidence to cast doubt on the use of fish oil supplements to prevent major cardiovascular disease. While early trials showed promise, more recent trials have revealed disappointing results. This includes two 2012 studies plus a 2016 systematic review from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Many experts have expressed little surprise at the lack of effectiveness of fish oil supplements. They agree that fish oil supplements had become sort of the “supplement du jour. The explanation for these poor results may be found in the aggressive way heart disease is treated today. The use of statins, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, and procedures to restore blood flow may largely explain why the early appearance of benefits from fish oil has largely disappeared. In addition, healthier diets, which include increased fish consumption, may have reduced the benefit of supplements over time. The AHA has yet to change its advice to include fish oil supplements
in those with or at risk to develop heart disease, most likely because the supplements do not have a down side. That is, they do no harm and are relatively cheap. There are ongoing major trials that are looking at the ability of fish oils to prevent the development of heart disease in those who do not have it, otherwise known as primary prevention. The results of these large trials should be published in the next year or two. In the meantime, people without heart disease as well as those with it should focus on making healthy lifestyle and dietary decisions, as well as monitoring their blood pressure and lipid levels. That being said, most people in the U.S. don’t eat that much fish. While the consumption of seafood is rising, it presently accounts for only five percent of protein consumption, far less than the 20 percent recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It is possible that fish oil supplements will have a greater effect in those who consume little to no fish. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

INTENTIONS “Sankalpa” is a Sanskrit word meaning an intention formed by the heart and mind. A solemn vow, determination or will. It is your connection to your deepest heart and soul longings. Aligning with your truth, your heartfelt desires. So very powerful and strong, yet we tend to ignore them and float through life doing whatever we have to do to survive overlooking the subtle signs trying to guide us on our journey. “San” means truth and “kalpa” means vow or inten-
tion. Truth meaning what do you really want to do with your life. Mary Oliver’s famous quote, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” You have the power to live your life in a very special, purposeful way but often you develop habits that inhibit your true happiness and health. Well, there is always time to set new intentions and start over, the new moon is a great time to reset. The easiest way to make positive change is state a confirmation that you
would like to see for yourself such as, “I want to be healthy and strong as I age.” Or, “I want to help others less fortunate than myself.” So many things you can put in motion but it starts with a heartfelt intention. You don’t have to be perfect but it should come from your heart where you will find your truth. The mind tends to overtake the heart — so beware. Looking at the moon each night, I am often amazed at the beauty as it changes each evening. The most beautiful transformation in such a short period of time. It’s a slow process but before you know it, you have a magnificent full moon. Much has happened in your life in that short period of time that the moon blossomed into its fullness. You think to yourself, what positive changes have I made in my life in this one moon cycle? How have I contributed to society to make it a better place to live and work? What am I doing to keep my body and mind healthy? What are my goals and intentions
The Rockaway Times for the next moon? There are so many opportunities to do good things in this one precious life. Can you think of one way you can help someone else? The truth is, your intentions come from a very deep place inside your heart. You will find the answers in complete silence. No TV, no internet, no music, no chatter, just quiet. Meditation is the greatest asset and everyone can do it. No wrong way, no right way. Just sit or lay in the peaceful space within the striking landscape of your body. The breath or a mantra can be your focus. From this unique place, you will begin to set intentions and goals for yourself. You will no doubt begin to reach out to others to help them find their intentions. It is the power of intention that changes us to be better people. My personal intentions are always made with a higher force. Whether you believe in or not you can set an intention, but let it be from your heart space.

Dog Days of August By Lou Pastina
I grew up with the phrase, "The Dog Days of Summer," in the context of baseball. It always seemed that when either the Mets or Yankees hit the skids in late summer, it was blamed on those damn dog days catching up with New York’s teams. But it turns out the phrase emanates from Greek and Roman times and refers instead to Orion’s dog, Sirius and the star that Sirius is named af-
ter, rising high in the sky signaling that the hottest time of the year is about to descend upon us. Well it’s August and it’s pretty hot, and I don’t know about a dog star named Sirius rising, but I do know it’s humid as all get out. I do know that Sirius Radio has a dog as its symbol, but I am drifting off track on that one. And I do know the dog days are beginning for the Yankees as they get their heads handed to them by the Red Sox. And I
do know the Mets dog days of August began in late May this year!! And it does seem that when those really humid, hot days roll in, that dogs just don’t want to do anything but curl up in the shade and wait it out. Actually not a bad strategy for most. I love the clouds of August though; big, puffy and cotton-candy like, they float across the sky from the bay to the beach like tomorrow doesn’t matter. Late summer brings an occasional breeze that hints at relief, followed by huge thunderstorms and buckets of rain, spliced by bolts of heat lightening. The ocean’s water this time of year warms up ever so nicely, with powerful waves to remind us who still is in charge. Soon we will see sandpipers competing with those humorous laughing seagulls and the occasional oyster-catcher skimming by at the shore. Teachers and students alike fear this time of year the most, because they know that right around the corner
Page 25 is the dreaded word that shall not be named. My mermaid still dreams about getting ready to go back to college around this time of year. One year I am actually going to drive her there and tell her I re-enrolled her, as she really liked school (damn, I said the word!). For those recently retired, it’s a hard transition realizing that summer doesn’t end in August, it’s actually a prelude to the best time of year. Which I think is a pretty good metaphor for life. If you can get to the point where you have built a life and get to retire, it opens up the world, so that you can now do whatever you want. Of course, the problem is always the same – what is it we really want. I always liked the answer in the movie, Miss Congeniality: “World peace!” And so, as these lazy days meander by, I wish you all peace and happiness, family and love, and big fluffy clouds. Now that I think of it, it’s a lot like this piece of writing, a bit fluffy!

The Rockaway Times pends on how saucy you like it (I used ½ cup bbq sauce and 1 cup water). Directions: Heat pan and drizzle a tablespoon of oil. Season pork chops with salt and pepper. Sauté pork chops until browned on both sides. Pour the BBQ sauce and the water over the pork. Place the lid on and cook on medium low for 5-10 minutes. Plate with your choice of sides and serve.

TLC Interview: Kerry Wallach, Author of Passing Illusions before openly or publicly announcing their Jewishness. I am further fascinated by the strategies people use to figure out whether someone else is Jewish the first time they meet (the same goes for other identities, especially LGBT identities).
ing Illusions:
Marilyn Macron By Marilyn Macron aka Maria Cowhey
I recently interviewed Kerry Wallach, Associate Professor of German Studies at Gettysburg College and author of Passing Illusions. I attended a fascinating book discussion of hers at the Center for Jewish History where she tied her book into the current hit series, Berlin Babylon. Here’s our Q&A about Pass-
TLC: Can you tell us a bit about the book? KW: Thanks very much for this opportunity to share my work with your readers. My book deals with Jews and Jewish identity in the Weimar Republic (1919–1933). I am especially interested in Jewish visibility and invisibility, as well as instances when Jewishness was concealed, revealed, or contested. The book’s cultural studies approach blends close analysis of cultural texts (literature, film, images, advertisements) and discourses with an analysis of sources used by historians: periodicals, personal memoirs, and archival documents. In addition to focusing on Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s, the book’s introduction and conclusion bring German-Jewish passing into dialogue with African American racial passing and queer passing to offer

insight into minority visibility more broadly. TLC:What inspired you to write this? KW: I have long been interested in the Weimar period because of the tensions and paradoxes it embodied. Even though it was Germany’s first democracy, it remained politically tumultuous. Jews finally gained full access to the privileges afforded to other German citizens, yet still thought twice
TLC: You write of “coding” and “passing” in Passing Illusions. Could you explain this? KW: Passing is a widely known concept that indicates a type of concealing: either deliberately presenting or being taken for something that one is not. In the United States, it is most often associated with the history of African American racial passing (Black passing for white) as well as sexual or queer passing (nonheterosexual for heterosexual). In order to pass or not pass, people might choose to display or conceal aspects that are associated Continued on page 32

with one identity or the other. In my book, I write about attributes that are coded Jewish, including racialized embodied characteristics (dark hair and dark coloring, noses of a certain shape); material signifiers (certain forms of clothing, head coverings, and jewelry); and other elements that are influenced by antisemitic stereotypes. TLC: I found it interesting how at the discussion you tied it in with the current Netflix series, Berlin Babylon. Could you explain the connection? KW: The hit German television series, Babylon Berlin (first two seasons released in 2017), is a period drama set in 1929, just a few years before the end of the Weimar Republic. It features one clearly Jewish character (August Benda) and references Jewishness in a number of other ways. I have written more about this in a forthcoming piece, so I won’t go into great detail here, but
Passing Illusions
it’s easy to find examples of passing in this crime show: police inspector Gereon Rath attempts to pass for members of various groups; others working undercover pass for whatever they need to be; Nazis pass for Communists. TLC: What type of reader were you as a child? And what books influenced you as a person the most?

KW: As a child, I already loved books about the first half of the twentieth century (Allof-a-Kind Family, Cheaper by the Dozen). In hindsight, it’s not surprising that I read everything I could find about the Holocaust at a relatively young age – I was only about 10 when I read Jane Yolen’s The Devil’s Arithmetic (and later Briar Rose). My college major focused on the “great books” in historical context, and I’ll never forget reading Dante’s Divine Comedy, Lessing’s Nathan the Wise, and Goethe’s Faust. My senior thesis focused on the German-Jewish poet, Else Lasker-Schüler. After college, I was incredibly moved by Jeffrey Eugenides’ Middlesex. I also read as much American Jewish fiction as I could, including lots of Philip Roth (Goodbye, Columbus was especially memorable). In graduate school, I found my way to a wide range of books: memoirs and autobiographies by such 18th-cen-
The Rockaway Times tury writers as Glikl bas Judah Leib (Glückel of Hameln) and Salomon Maimon; stories about New York’s Lower East Side by Anzia Yezierska and Abraham Cahan; Weimar-era works by Joseph Roth, Vicki Baum, and Irmgard Keun; feminist and gender theory by Judith Butler and later Sara Ahmed. Recently, I found both Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing to be stunning and incredibly powerful works of fiction. TLC: If you could choose one book to be on a high school curriculum, what would it be? KW: Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man (1952) is a classic that already makes it onto many high school reading lists. It also provides important insight into some of the topics I deal with in my book. I think high school students could also learn a lot from Nella Larsen’s Passing (1929), which is the novel that helped popularized the term.

FAMILY FUN RUN RESULTS The 16th edition of the Graybeards Family Run once again provided one of the highlights of summer in Rockaway, producing a fabulous night with nearly 500 runners participating in at least one race. Spectators more than doubled race attendance, cheering the runners of all ages, and then convening in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard at St. Francis de Sales, to celebrate with food and beverages, music from Gearth, Wind & Fireman, games and children’s rides, raffles and awards. On Friday, July 20, the children’s races kicked things off at 6:30 p.m. with waves of runners pouring down Rockaway Beach Blvd. to receive their ribbons after completing their trek. Rockaway’s Special Athletes followed, drawing a tremendous response from the crowd. The 1-Mile set off at 7 p.m. and John Conroy took the trophy. Kiernan Smith, Christopher Reilly, Joe Butler, and JoJo O’Grady completed the
top five. Kailey Aiken was the female champion, followed by Emily Thompson, Megan Youngberg, Noelle Polanco, and Kathleen Burns. This year’s 5k race once again featured segments along the boardwalk, Rockaway Beach Blvd., and Neponsit Avenue. Ron Joseph broke the Goldberg family stranglehold on the title, winning in 16:20. Demir Degirmenci also broke 17 minutes, followed by Dylan Conaghan, defending champion Patrick Goldberg and Tom Patchett. There was also a new champion on the female side with Catherine Lunny taking the plate in 22:42. Last year’s champ Caroline Gifford was second, Kerry Brady was third,
