Greetings,
to our loyal golfers! The Board of Commissioners thanks you for your continuing support of Rockford Park District golf courses, and we truly appreciate your patronage.
We know you have many choices when it comes to taking lessons or playing a round of golf, and we’d like to thank you for choosing to play at Aldeen, Elliot, Ingersoll, Sandy Hollow, and Sinnissippi golf courses. We strive to offer the best possible playing conditions within the resources we are given, and our goal is to keep fees as reasonable as possible to accomplish that. The economic conditions continue to be challenging for people to participate as much as they would like to, and the Park Board and Rockford Park District
Foundation are committed to providing youth opportunities to play and learn golf through the Fun for All Kids scholarship program. We continue to maintain pricing for golf services as affordable as possible, and try to offer you value-added benefits. If you would like to take up the game of golf or improve your score, the Park District has lessons available for all ages and all skill levels, including beginners. It’s never too early (or too late) in life to take up this great game.
On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, as well as the men and women of the Rockford Park District, thank you for choosing to spend your time with us. We hope you enjoy the links while you are enjoying life! ◆

2013 SPRING ISSUE
Where the game of golf knows no season The 2013 golf season “officially” begins in late March, but the Rockford Park District has one course that can open at a moment’s notice! Since 2009 Earl F. Elliot has welcomed golfers with open arms year-round. The 2011 season was known as the season that never ended. Elliot opened in early March, remained open through November, and then was open for 11 days in December, 7 days in January 2012, and for the first time ever, 8 days in February 2012. The 2011 season rolled right into the 2012 golf season, when Elliot officially opened March 6, the earliest in history. As a result, Elliot was up 9% in rounds for the 2012 season.
So, what does it take to keep the course ready for play at all times? Every fall, maintenance and clubhouse staff know their schedules need to be flexible because staff can be called in to work at a moment’s notice. The course could open at any time, even on a holiday
(Elliot was open on Thanksgiving Day 2012), which means staff must be flexible and drop their plans in order to give area golfers a place to play. Course conditions are also monitored very closely. To avoid wear patterns on the teeing ground, tee markers are removed, which encourages golfers to use any area of the tee. While temperatures might be in the 50s and golfers want to play, the course could be too wet due to melting snow. By early March, hole locations need to be moved regularly, so the frost must be out of the ground. It is very important NOT to open the course too quickly and then have extreme damage that can impact conditions for a good portion of the season. Thank goodness that year-round play has caused little or no damage to the greens, tees, and fairways.
John Deere Classic Birdies for Charity — helping golf grow The Rockford Park District joined with The John Deere Classic Birdies for Charity program in 2010, and to date has raised over $6000 for Rockford Park District youth golf programs. The 2012 campaign generated over $3000, which will be used in the PGA Sports Academy PE curriculum. Do you want to help youth golf programs? Then join other fellow golf enthusiasts, take your best guess, and donate to Birdies for Charity. There are two ways to help raise funds — simply pledge a one-time donation OR pledge one cent or more per birdie that will be made Wednesday — Sunday by the PGA Tour Pros. A grand prize will be given by the John Deere Classic to the person who guesses the correct number (in the event of a tie, winners will be randomly selected). Forms will be available online in mid-April at rockfordgolfs.com (click on Tournaments/Events), or at any of the Rockford Park District golf courses. ◆ IS A PROUD PARTNER OF

One cosmetic effect can be seen on the greens in March and April, when it looks like the greens have “the measles” from all the ball marks received from the winter play. To help make sure this condition does not affect play, greens are rolled several times and top dressed with sand to help smooth the turf and give a good putting surface. Winter equipment maintenance becomes a challenge due to the shorter period of time to get the equipment ready for the next golf season. No matter what Mother Nature throws our way, our staff is extremely proud to be able to offer year-round play at Elliot, and look forward to providing the best conditions at all Rockford Park District golf courses for future generations. ◆

Golf Advisory Committee
NEW CDGA Golf Course Ratings and Slopes
recommendations implemented
During 2012, the citizens’ Golf Advisory Committee met to discuss the past, present, and future of Park District golf courses. The committee was formed in 1975, and meets periodically to discuss all aspects of the golf course operations. The purpose is to give golfers input to our policies, procedures, and golf course improvement program as we continue to strive toward improvement of our total golf operation. The committee’s input continues to be an important part of the planning of our golf course program, and several ideas were implemented during 2012. A pilot program providing containers for broken tees on Elliot’s par threes was implemented and met with limited success. The remaining dead trees and stumps at all courses will be removed during the spring of 2013.
We expanded our use of volunteers — a girl scout troop completed a project of planting flowers at Ingersoll clubhouse. Additional volunteers were used in the PGA Sports Academy, LPGA girls golf program, Youth Skills Challenge, and school fieldtrips. Volunteer opportunities will continue to be expanded during the 2013 season. The new PGA Sports Academy will be expanded to physical education classes in the Rockford area. Silver tees were established at Elliot, Ingersoll, Sandy Hollow, and Sinnissippi, and the yardages will be listed on the 2013 scorecards. Elliot, Ingersoll, Sandy Hollow, and Sinnissippi were rated by the CDGA (Chicago District Golf Association). The courses were last rated more than 10 years ago, and changes in the slope and course ratings had occured. See chart at left for the new CDGA ratings. ◆

Beyond the Game
Meet the 2012 Inductees of the Golf Hall of Fame presented by We’re looking for the Class of 2013! You don’t have to be the best golfer, or have the most amazing swing, the Golf Hall of Fame honors the contributions and accomplishments of
PICTURED ABOVE: John Alastair Roberston and Steve Benjamin
individuals who are worthy of recognition and are examples for others to emulate. If you would like to nominate someone for the class of 2013, visit rockfordgolfs.com, or pick up a nomination form at the Rockford Park District golf courses or either Customer Service location. Deadline for submission is July 2, 2013. The Rockford Area Golf Hall of Fame is a way to recognize, preserve, and promote the heritage of golf in the Rockford area. The Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2012 is Steve Benjamin, John Alastair Robertson, and Tiger Woods Foundation. Inductees are selected through careful consideration by screening and a selection committee comprised of knowledgeable golf experts representing area groups and organizations, including previous Hall of Fame inductees. Steve Benjamin was a member of the 1968
Guilford Vikings golf team, and during his collegiate career at the University of Northern Colorado, he was one of the golf team’s top five players. In 1973, Steve turned pro and worked as a club professional for the next four years in Colorado and Texas. In 1977, he assumed the role of head coach for his alma mater, Rock Valley College. Under his guidance, RVC garnered over 60 team victories, including 15 regional championships, and the team advanced to the NJCAA nationals for seven straight years, earning two NJCAA Division III national championships; Steve was named NJCAA Division III National Golf Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2002.
After receiving his amateur status back, Steve continued his competitive career in Rockford by winning the Ballard Memorial in 1983 and 1986, and the Winnebago County Amateur in 1986. John Robertson first began golfing at age 13,
and had a natural ability right from the start. Sinnissippi Golf Course was John’s home course, and he didn’t play another golf course until he was 16. After graduation, John started playing pretty regularly, and that was when he was bitten by the “golf bug.” He worked at Sinnissippi Golf Course as a cashier, enrolled at Rock Valley College for the fall semester, and played golf for two years for Coach Steve Benjamin. After RVC, John attended the University of Iowa, and played in local tournaments during his college days, which garnered him his first win in the 1986 Ledges Invitational. John was a fixture on the local competitive scene in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, winning the Melvin Ballard several times, the Greater Rockford Men’s Golf Classic four times, the Ledges Invitational four times, and won several other area golf tournaments. In 2006, John and his wife Mary Beth left the Rockford area and moved to Dayton, Ohio, where John accepted a position with GE. John still plays golf regularly, and maintains a scratch handicap. It seems like only yesterday the Tiger Woods Foundation (TWF) was first in Rockford, but it has been more than 10 years. The 2001 TWF Clinic

and Exhibition generated over $154,000 in grants to area youth golf groups to expand and enhance their golf lesson programs. These grants were restricted for certain use, and no funds were to be allowed to construct any golf facility, but this did not deter golf enthusiasts from starting a fundraising campaign that would lead to the construction of two wonderful facilities — Ingersoll Learning Links, and The First Tee AMCORE Learning Facility at Patriots’ Gateway. Both locations helped grow the next generation of golfers. While the construction campaign was underway, golf programs started to bloom. From 2001 to 2004, Rockford Park District youth golf programs increased by 78% with more than 4,600 registrations compared to 2,584 in 2001, thanks to the funds from the Tiger Woods Foundation. In 2004, the Tiger Woods Foundation returned to Rockford for the TWF “In the City” festival and clinic. Funds raised from the 2004 event generated another $40,000 to further enrich golf programs for youth. The Foundation was very impressed with the implementation of the grant program and the development of the Ingersoll Learning Links in 2005, and awarded an additional $18,130 to the Park District in a one-time grant. This is the first and only time in TWF history a construction grant was awarded to a TWF clinic site. ◆

Aldeen Golf Club’s terrace gets even better with the addition of golf course lighting
With the completion of a beautiful new outdoor terrace at Aldeen Golf Club last spring, the overall experience that patrons enjoy at the club improved dramatically! The 5,000+ square foot terrace with its fire pit, grill, and outdoor dining helped elevate the club to a new level of quality and service. Along with interior renovations to the clubhouse that turned the dining room into a much more customer friendly dinning space with a “sports bar” feel, the terrace helped Aldeen become an even more complete facility. While the record summer heat kept many patrons off the terrace for about six weeks, that all changed once the temperature moderated! Golfers and non-golfers alike enjoyed, as the Noonan’s slogan promoted, “burgers, brews, and great views.” The only problem was that after dark, there was no more view — problem solved.
Thanks to Rick and Lana Engen, the donors who provided the funding for the terrace and interior renovations a year ago, patrons will now be able to enjoy a stunning view of the course even after sunset. The view from the terrace after the sun goes down will be highlighted by landscape lighting at five different locations on the course. From lights in crabapple trees near the first tee, to lights all the way out at the 18th tee, terrace guests will enjoy a subtle yet inviting view of the course. There will even be light cascading over the pond on #18 and illuminating the planting area behind the 5th tee! The idea to light areas on the course has been in the Aldeen long range plan for awhile, but it was moved along by a local electrician at Engel Electric and frequent player at Aldeen. After setting up a series of “test” lighting demonstrations that interested Rick and Lana Engen, a design was created with the help of professional lighting designer Ron Falls, another frequent Aldeen patron. The five locations will include more than a dozen light fixtures, and
will cost close to $64,000; all of which has been graciously donated by the Engens. Construction is set to begin as soon as the weather permits, so that by the time players are ready to sit outside and enjoy the terrace, they will be able to stay and enjoy the view even longer! ◆

2013 SPRING ISSUE
AT LEFT: The first family to play the course: Raymond Poston, Mona Poston, Madison Poston
Ingersoll Offers PGA Family Course on the Front Nine The PGA Family Course is designed to encourage kids and all beginners to participate and have more fun playing the game. The course is based on the concept of shorter holes with distances suited to young players’ ability levels. Funded by a National Park and Recreation and PGA Grant in 2011, PGA family tees were installed on the front nine at Ingersoll golf course in 2012. The Family Course adds two levels of additional tees to each hole well in front of the existing tees. Teeing grounds are marked by placing a Family Course tee plate on level locations in the fairway. Because the forward tees on most golf courses are approximately 2500 yards for 9 holes, they are too long for kids and adult beginners. By adding two sets of tee locations (Level 1 tees: 1,500 yds for
9 holes, and Level 2 tees: 2,000 yds for 9 holes) all family members are able to enjoy their round. So, how do you know if you should use the PGA family tees? The guidelines are fairly simple – play from the PGA blue tees (1545 yds for 9 holes) if you have a driver carry distance of 100 yards or less. Use the yellow PGA tees if you have a driver carry distance of 101 to 140 yards. Playing from the proper tees, all golfers can reach the green in regulation, which allows for a more enjoyable round and improved pace of play. Reduced green fees are available when playing the family tees (sorry, the reduced fees do not apply when playing from the regular tees). There is even a special scorecard indicating each hole’s yardage and par. ◆
