to our loyal golfers! The Board of Commissioners thanks you for your continuing support of Rockford Park District golf courses, and we truly appreciate your patronage.
We know you have many choices when it comes to taking lessons or playing a round of golf, and we’d like to thank you for choosing to play at Aldeen, Elliot, Ingersoll, Sandy Hollow, and Sinnissippi golf courses. We strive to offer the best possible playing conditions within the resources we are given, and our goal is to keep fees as reasonable as possible to accomplish that. The economic conditions continue to be challenging for people to participate as much as they would like to, and the Park Board and Rockford Park District Foundation are committed to providing youth opportunities to play and learn golf through the Fun for All Kids scholarship program.
This summer, the Board is conducting an at-large citizen survey, and we invite your participation and feedback through customer survey opportunities through the RPD web site, focus groups, or communication with the Golf Advisory Committee. We continue to maintain pricing for golf services as affordable as possible, and try to offer you value-added benefits. You can take advantage of discount specials offered at Ingersoll throughout the summer. If you would like to take up the game of golf or improve your score, the Park District has lessons available for all ages and all skill levels, including beginners. It’s never too early (or too late) in life to take up this great game.

Riverside has been a valued partner of the Rockford Park District for 10 years, and we appreciate their support in hosting this event that gets golfers “in the swing” for 2012. ◆
Beyond the game Meet the 2011 Inductees of the Golf Hall of Fame presented by The Rockford Area Golf Hall of Fame is a way to recognize, preserve, and promote the heritage of golf in the Rockford area. The Hall of Fame honors the contributions and accomplishments of individuals who are worthy of recognition and are examples for others to emulate. The Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2011 is Conny Sjostrom Sr. and Irene Sjostrom Youth Golf Foundation, Jamie Hogan, Gunnar Nelson, and Rockford Sportsmen’s Golf Association. Inductees are selected through careful consideration by screening and selection committees comprised of knowledgeable golf experts representing area groups and organizations, including previous Hall of Fame inductees. The Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held Monday, September 12, 2011 at Cliffbreakers Riverside Resort immediately after the Golf Hall of Fame Play Day at Aldeen Golf Club. Jamie Hogan was recognized for his golfing prowess, which started at a very young age. While living in Iowa, he captured the freshman medal for Oskaloosa High School at the Ottumwa Invitational. His golfing career continued to elevate when he moved to Rockford and joined the Guilford golf team. He played varsity all four years, and was captain during his senior year. At Iowa State, Jamie set the all time maximum number of birdies recorded in the conference tournament during his freshman year. After taking a break from golf for a few years, Jamie came back strong. In 1999 he won the Greater Rockford Men’s Golf Classic. During his speech
Jamie said, “You see, for me, what’s best about golf is all of its human ingredients, all the different personalities of players, players‘ friends, players‘ caddies, even heavy breathers — it’s downright fun to get to know them all. Golf is a game like no other.” Since 1999, he has garnered over 24 local championships, including the Men’s Classic (8), Aldeen Cup (4), County Amateur (1), and the Gold Medal (4), to name just a few. Jamie also volunteers hundreds of hours for the Park District’s PGA Medalist program and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program, which reach over 150 youth each year. Gunnar Nelson began his golfing career at the age of eight as a caddy at Jackson Park Golf Course in Chicago. In 1929, he accepted a position with the Rockford Country Club. His contributions to Rockford golf are numerous, as were his friends and golfing acquaintances. Gunnar retired from his position as Director of Golf at Rockford Country Club in 1967 after 38 years of service. He loved to compete, but most of all, he was a patient, enthusiastic teacher of golf. The Rockford Sportsmen’s Golf Association (RSGA) was founded in 1948 and is a non-profit organization which promotes and directs the affairs of athletic, social, charitable, and educational nature among its members. The youth component of the RSGA began in 1968 and incorporates the “Big Brother” concept relating to golf. Members “adopt” a youngster and teach them the game of golf. Along with golf, the youth are taught good sportsmanship, the importance of rules, how to respect the rights and property of others, all while providing an opportunity to learn about themselves and

their capabilities. The RSGA also provides all the equipment for this program. The Conny Sjostrom, Sr. and Irene Sjostrom Youth Golf Foundation was established in 1997 to celebrate the late Conny Sjostrom, Sr., his wife, the late Irene Sjostrom and the love of the game that they shared. Margie Sjostrom, daughter of Conny and Irene, talked about the mission of the Foundation during the acceptance speech stating, “Our mission is to introduce golf to our youth and to watch them grow in their skills.” The Foundation provides financial assistance to support participation in tournaments and to allow area youth to go on field trips to see the best golfers in the world compete. The true passion of the Foundation lies in purchasing trophies for the Boys and Girls Golf Classic. Beginning in 1997, the participants in both tournaments receive the same type of trophy due to additional funds provided by the Foundation. Many remember the best part of the awards ceremony being Mrs. Irene Sjostrom. When each recipient received their age group trophy, Mrs. Sjostrom provided a big hug and wonderful words of encouragement. The keynote speaker at the Golf Hall of Fame dinner was Dan Jansen, who provided the world with a very memorable moment when he won a gold medal in 1994 during his final Olympic speed skating race after suffering through years of heartbreak. Lesson programs enhanced by
new PGA Youth Academy The PGA, one of the foremost authorities in golf, is pursuing a more standardized approach to growing junior golf participation. Building off the pre-existing PGA First Swing and PGA Medalist programs, the PGA Youth Golf Academy is a national program with a collaborative framework based on research and best practices from PGA professionals. The PGA Youth Golf Academy’s main focus is to coordinate a fun, systematic approach to develop long term player development that will continue the play of golf socially or competitively.
Academy (formerly the PGA Boys Medalist) and the Youth Golf Academy (formerly the Youth Golf Camp). “We are excited to be a part of the new national PGA Youth program. We feel the curriculum is a perfect fit for our programs and will offer a new and fresh approach to learning the game,” stated Steve D. Moore, PGA Certified teaching professional and Rockford Park District Coordinator of Instruction.
Participants will be instructed in five areas that will help youth learn, develop, and practice skills to be come a better golfer and enjoy the sport of golf. The five areas are: golf skills, sportsmanship, etiquette and rules, real on-course experiences, and golf physical assessments.
The PGA Academy “Fit for Golf” guide will also be incorporated in these programs. The guide offers ideas for healthy eating, getting active, and exercises for the golfer. The guide will be incorporated in other youth lesson programs and will be available for all golfers to download from rockfordparkdsitrict.org in late April. ◆

Golf in-school PE programs During 2011, 21 schools participated in the Golf Services PGA First Swing Lesson Program. Staff instructed 950 participants, and an additional 5,200 participants received instruction from PE teachers at their respective schools. These schools were: Alpine Luther Academy, Bloom, Brookview, Ellis Arts Academy, Gregory, Harlem, Jefferson, Lathrop, Machesney Park, Maple, Marquette, Montessori, Montessori Private Academy, Spectrum, Summerdale, Rock Cut, Rolling Green, St. James, St. Peter, Whitehead, and Windsor. A total of 991 kids went on field trips to the golf courses for lessons on the driving range and the Ingersoll Learning Links Course. The Park District offers The PGA First Swing golf curriculum to area schools at little or no cost. ◆ If you are a Physical Education teacher and would like to include golf in your curriculum, contact Golf Services at 815-987-1602, and we will have our First Swing Coordinator contact you!

Golf advocates help raise almost $3,000 for Park District youth golf programs through the John Deere Birdies for Charity program Ken and Sue Roeh donate on behalf of their granddaughter. Why donate to the Birdies for Charity program instead of directly to the Rockford Park District Foundation? Just ask former residents Ken and Sue Roeh. In 2010, the Roeh’s donated $1,000 to the Rockford Park District Foundation to help support the LPGAUSGA Girls golf program. In 2011, they donated $1,000 to the John Deere Classic Birdies for Charity program, and the LPGA-USGA Girls program received $1,080, an 8% return on their original $1,000 donation. “We wanted to find a way to leverage our donation for the girls golf program, so our daughter, Karen Blomgren, told us about the Birdies for Charity program, where you can earn a 5–8% bonus on your money, a winning combination for the girls program!” “The Rockford Park District golf programs and their staff have been a blessing to our granddaughter, Lizzy Blomgren. When she was learning the game, she had a difficult time finding golf clubs because she was so petite and a left handed golfer. Through the LPGA-USGA girls golf program, the Rockford Park District found properly sized clubs, and provided excellent lessons and tournaments so she could grow in the game she loves, and in life as well. This is why we donate to the girls program in Lizzy’s name. We hope our donation will help other girls find the same enthusiasm for the game, whether it is a recreational pastime, competitively, or a possible career, as Lizzy is currently pursuing a Golf Management degree at Methodist University,” says Ken Roeh. “We will continue donating to the girls program because we know the Golf Services Department will continue to foster wonderful relations for the youth of the Rockford area.” For more information on what Lizzy Blomgren is doing, see the article on page 7.

The PGA Merchandise Show is the premier marketplace for golf manufacturers, course management, apparel, and other golf related products and services. In January, over 40,000 industry professionals from around the world had the opportunity to attend educational conferences and test products firsthand through interactive events.

started on a Rockford Park District golf course A look at where area youth golfers are now Spending every day on a golf course is exactly where 22-year-old Jordan Hatch from South Beloit wanted to be ever since she set foot on a Rockford Park District golf course. Hatch is currently working at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Florida and says, “The Rockford Park District has gotten me to where I am right now.”

As of now, Hatch has submitted an application to the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and hopes to be like Annika one day, but hasn’t ruled out eventually returning to her roots. Lessons learned on Rockford Park District golf courses and lifelong bonds with Golf Services staff are the reasons Lizzy Blomgren says she’s been so successful in the game. “They helped me through everything, not just golf. Rockford Park District golf instructors have been the biggest influence on me, next to my parents. It’s the best program I could ever have gotten into as a child,” says Blomgren.

to take part in the Rockford Park District’s Youth Golf Club program and eventually ended up taking private lessons, something Blomgren says she wouldn’t have been able to do anywhere else. “My parents wouldn’t have been able to afford any other program than the Rockford Park District for golf lessons. I don’t think people realize how affordable lessons are, and how even private lessons are so reasonable.” Blomgren is currently a sophomore at Methodist University at Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she is pursuing a degree in Professional Golf Management so she can pass on her love of the game to a new generation of golfers. ◆

Aldeen Golf Club adds new terrace for 2012 Patrons at Aldeen Golf Club will be able to enjoy the addition of a beautiful new terrace along the west side of the clubhouse in spring 2012. The nearly 5,000-square foot concrete terrace will feature seating for 40 people at tables of four under umbrellas, an outdoor kitchen and grill, a fire pit with casual lounge seating, and an open area for outdoor parties, all surrounded by boulders and professionally designed landscaping.
The project, which has been funded by a very generous private donation, has been in the design process for well over a year. The plan was finalized in the summer of 2011, and construction began in October. In an effort to improve the overall food and beverage experience at Aldeen, and to help the restaurant operation incorporate the new outdoor dining, the interior of the clubhouse is being modified as well. The bar area is being moved to the west side of the clubhouse to overlook the terrace and to allow patrons to
enjoy the view of the golf course. The terrace will be accessible from the dining room or from the south end of the clubhouse. There will also be access from the terrace to the practice green. To help maintain the pace of play on the course, players “making the turn” to the back nine will be served at a concession window on the terrace. “We are really excited to have the ability to offer outdoor dining this season,” said Randy Baker, owner of Five Forks Market and Noonan’s at
Aldeen. “This will allow us to create a dinner menu and will help our customers enjoy the most beautiful view in the area.” The new menu will feature steaks, sandwiches, and salads. Plan on a bite to eat after your round this season, or stop in for lunch or dinner. Enjoy a drink by the fire and the aroma of steaks on the grill. The staff at Noonan’s is looking forward to serving you, now inside or out! ◆
Aldeen expands its partnership with golfnow.com After almost a year of work on a computer interface that allowed the Rockford Park District’s electronic system to work with the industry’s leading tee time reservation system, golfnow.com, Aldeen Golf Club implemented an online greens fee booking system in 2011. “We went from getting a handful of internet booked tee times in previous years to almost 900 rounds being booked through golfnow.com in 2011,” said Duncan Geddes, PGA Professional at

During the first year, tee times based on standard greens fees were offered, but in 2012 patrons will have the ability to book tee times with the resident discount (provided they meet residency requirements), and the same goes for those with a season permit. The golfnow.com platform allows facilities to manage their tee sheets by offering “demand based pricing,” which helps maximize the use of the facility by offering discounts based on when the reservations are
made and what time of day or day of the week players want. “While we raised our greens fees for the first time in many years, we are also offering reduced fees at many times throughout the week, so players can see lower rates based on when they play. The golf business is very competitive, and we need to make sure we continue to try new things that will maximize the use of this community asset,” said Geddes. ◆

The Rockford Park District offers season golf permits valid at five Rockford Park District courses (a reduced greens fee applies at Aldeen). Permanent photo permits are issued, and permits may be renewed to validate the permit for the 2012 season.
A resident (RES) is an individual who resides within the Rockford Park District boundaries or who can supply proof that he/she is a property owner paying taxes to the Rockford Park District (NR=Non-resident).
