www.rockfordparkdistrict.org www.belviderepark.org 815-987-8800 • TTY, 888-871-6171 815-547-5711 NORTHLANDS ASSOCIATION FOR SPECIAL RECREATION is a cooperative partnership between the Rockford, Freeport, and Belvidere park districts (referred to as member districts). NASR programs are open to any individual with disability-related special needs such as physical, mental, and developmental disabilities, and persons with mental illness, behavior disorders, visual, or hearing impairments. Member district residents are invited to participate in specialty/ therapeutic recreation (TR) programs off ered through any member district at the resident rate. Participation in Inclusion Services at a member district other than your own member district dictates you must pay the non-resident rate for that specific program.

iCan ride bike program (formerly Lose the Training Wheels; ages 8+) Are you a biker who is ready to transition from training wheels to a conventional two-wheeled bicycle? This program works with youth, teens and adults with disabilities who experience difficulty in getting past training wheels and on to conventional two-wheeled bikes. Many persons, including individuals with varied disabilities (i.e., mild cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, autism, and a wide range of developmental delays), can be taught to become successful, even accomplished, bike riders without those dreaded training wheels! iCan Ride staff, in collaboration with Park District staff and volunteers, will assist each rider as they progress through a series of adapted bicycles toward their ultimate goal of riding without training wheels! Riders must meet the following requirements to participate: 1 . Be at least 8 years old 2 . Have a disability 3 . Walk without an assistive device (i.e., walker, crutches, cane, etc) 4 . Be able to side-step swiftly 5 . Be able to wear a properly fitted helmet at all times when on a bicycle 6 . Have a minimum inseam measurement of at least 20” when measured from the floor wearing sneakers

7 . Not exceed 220 lbs Parents/guardians must attend a mandatory orientation on the Sunday night prior to the camp starting time to be announced. The
meeting will include information regarding what to expect during the week, how to prepare each day, and important bike and helmet information. Participants are asked to bring their own biking helmet all week, and on Thursday we ask they bring their own bike from home, so the trained iCan Ride staff can make sure the bike is appropriate for learning, and make small adjustments for the individual.
Register for your preference of morning or afternoon session. Once registration closes and individual skill assessments are completed, each family will be assigned their 75-minute session time for the week, and receive a letter with detailed camp information. Throughout the week, parents are encouraged to stay and observe during their child’s riding session. Registration ends July 19, 2013 . [JM]

WINTER/SPRING 2013 GUIDE
Gold Medal Announcement The Rockford Park District accepted the 2012 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Rockford Park District Executive Director Tim Dimke, Rockford Park District Board of Commissioners President Jack Armstrong, and Park Board Commissioners Doug Brooks and Tyler Smith accepted the Gold Medal Grand Plaque during the Opening General Session of the NRPA’s Annual Congress & Exposition in Anaheim, CA. This is a major accomplishment not just for the Rockford Park District, but for the entire community. The Rockford Park District is now known as the best park district in the nation. Our citizens deserve the best, and it is one of our highest priorities that residents have exceptional parks and recreation facilities, services, and programs at a reasonable cost.
The Gold Medal Award honors park and recreation agencies throughout the United States that demonstrate excellence in long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. Each agency is judged on its ability to address the needs of those it serves through the collective energies of citizens, staff, and elected officials. It has been 23 years since the Rockford Park District brought home the National Gold Medal Award from the NRPA. The Rockford Park District last achieved this honor in 1989, and was selected as a finalist in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, and 2011. The District was awarded a second National Gold Medal for Special Recreation in 1995.
A special thank you to the White family for sharing their story with everyone in the Gold Medal video.
