Farewell to Bre! For the last 5½ years, the Therapeutic Recreation team of the Rockford Park District has offered me so many opportunities. I’ve grown professionally and personally with coordinating programs, meeting SO many new people, supervising AWESOME staff and interns, and of course, having a blast with all of our program participants. I have learned more than I ever thought I could. I want to thank each and every participant, parent, staff member, intern, colleague, and volunteer for allowing me to have such amazing experiences with the Park District. I’ve learned something from each and every experience, and the Therapeutic Recreation team, participants, their families, and staff have truly become family to me. As coming to the Park District was one of many transitions in my life, I come upon another. My second child is due to arrive in mid-April, and I am taking the opportunity to focus on my growing family. Leaving the Park District was not an easy decision, as each and every one of you has touched my heart. Sincerely, Bre

NASR programs are open to any individual with disability-related special needs such as physical, mental, and developmental disabilities, and persons with mental illness, behavior disorders, visual, or hearing impairments. Member district residents are invited to participate in specialty/ therapeutic recreation (TR) programs off ered through any member district at the resident rate. Participation in Inclusion Services at a member district other than your own member district dictates you must pay the non-resident rate for that specific program.

www.freeportparkdistrict.org 815-235-6114

Both districts offer many opportunities for you to make new friends and learn new skills. Adult SERVICES

Are you a biker who is ready to transition from training wheels to a conventional two-wheeled bicycle? This program works with youth, teens and adults with disabilities who experience difficulty in getting past training wheels and on to conventional two-wheeled bikes. Many persons, including individuals with varied disabilities (i.e., mild cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, autism, and a wide range of developmental delays), can be taught to become successful, even accomplished, bike riders without those dreaded training wheels! iCan Ride staff, in collaboration with Park District staff and volunteers, will assist each rider as they progress through a series of adapted bicycles toward their ultimate goal of riding without training wheels!

This collaborative program between the Rockford Park District and the Arc of Winnebago, Boone, and Ogle counties provides its artists with the proper supplies and facility to practice their creative skills. Artists will learn a new skill to try out each week, as well as create their very own art piece. The artists work will then be displayed at the May 11 TR Art Show. RIDE

The Therapeutic Recreation team’s social program provides adults (Be Social) and teens (Teens on the Town) almost weekly events to hang out with their friends. Some of the events are housed within the Rockford Park District Facilities. These events include seasonal dances, karaoke nights, game nights (video and board games), movie nights, craft opportunities, and cooking programs, to name a few. When we “hit the town,” we’ll check out community sporting events (IceHogs, Aviators, Rock Valley College basketball), local museums, movies, bowling, restaurants, our favorite parks for picnic fun, and of course, hang out at some of our favorite RPD spots (Forest City Queen, Magic Waters, the pools, Lockwood Park, etc.). We are also open to suggestions. So, if you’re looking to get out on the town and be social, give us a call!

Other information you should know:

Registration Deadline • Please also note, the registration deadline is 8 business days prior to the event.

Transportation • $4.00 per social event • Residents: We now provide door-to-door transportation for teens that are Rockford Park District residents. • Non-residents: Pick-up points are available for participants that are non-residents. Please choose one of the following pick-up points

• N orth Pick-up Point — the southwest corner of the Meadow Mart Shopping Center (N Second and Windsor Ave, Loves Park)

• S outh Pick-up Point — Phillips 66 (4402 Linden Rd, Rockford)

Adult SERVICES

• You can also choose to bring your teen to the location each social event; you DO NOT have to use transportation services.

Cooking and a movie

• If you have extenuating circumstances and cannot register your teen prior to the deadline, contact the Therapeutic Recreation office at 815-987-1606 as soon as possible.

RIDE

There will be dinner … but we’re going to make it! Homemade personal pizzas with the toppings of your choice will be on the menu, as well as some monkey bread for dessert … all made by YOU! Don’t worry, we won’t act out the movie; there will be a real movie for us to watch on a big screen. Bring your appetite! Make sure to let us know your top three favorite toppings. [PR] NOTE: If you have any specific diet concerns, please let us know.

teen summer camps weekly themes Week 1: Top Chef What better way to start the summer than with a friendly food competition. We will be learning about healthy food choices, summer recipes, and then put our culinary skills to the test! We will be having a cookout on Wednesday prepared by the staff, but on Thursday, participants will take turns in the kitchen, and you better believe we’ll be sampling all the goodies at snack time! We’ll be leaving dessert to the pros, and will make a stop on Friday at Dairy Queen before heading to Sand Park Pool.

Week 2: Natural Attractions We are surrounded by beauty, sometimes we just need to stop and appreciate it. During week two, we will take advantage of the warm weather by spending lots of time outdoors to experience nature firsthand. Grab your sunscreen and bug repellent, because this week will be full of scavenger hunts, arts and crafts involving nature, outdoor games, and a field trip to Rock Cut State Park.

Week 3: Movie Madness Who doesn’t love movies — from the climactic action scenes to the popcorn and air-conditioned theater! We will spend the week playing fun

movie trivia games, writing letters to our favorite movie stars, and doing our best to watch at least one American classic each day! We will complete our week by taking a cinematic adventure of our own to Showplace 14.

Week 4: Wildlife Wonders Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! This week will be full of animal themed arts and crafts, wildlife active games, and a trip to see the wild up close and personal at the Madison Park Zoo! This will be a week that you definitely won’t want to miss! We may even get a surprise visit from some local wildlife creatures while at camp.

Week 5: Water Works Water Works isn’t just a property you can buy in Monopoly, it’s also the theme of our fifth week at camp! As we hit the middle of summer with temperatures rising, we will spend the days cool, calm, and collectively drenched. Pack your suits every day, and be ready to get wet while we move and play. The water works week wouldn’t be complete without a field trip to the one and only Magic Waters!

Week 6: Teenage Adventures

playing fun games, doing arts and crafts, and a fair share of lounging. But there will be a healthy amount of extreme adventure mixed into everything too! Be prepared to travel around Rockford. We’ll have so much to do we may not be able to fit it all in our day! Volcano Falls … here come the teens!

Week 7: Sports Galore Do the names Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, Babe Ruth, Tiger Woods, or Jeff Gordon ring a bell? If so, you must be as big a sports fan as we are! And this week, we will celebrate our love of sports by having our very own obstacle races and sporting competitions. Be prepared to split into teams and work together to be this summer’s team of the year! It will be an action-packed week, then ends with a trip to Ingersoll Golf Course and an Aviators baseball game!

Week 8: Celebrity Week Like all good things, summer will come to an end, but we’ll send it out in style! Get photo ready every single day, because this week will be filled with tons of photos, music, dancing, and of course, … a teen talent show starring YOU, our camp celebrities!

What teenager doesn’t love a good adventure every now and then? We will spend the week
