A rock climbing shoe should fit "comfortably tight" throughout and never cause pain at any one particular point (especially in the toe box). Board-lasting involves placing the laced uppers over the top of the last and wrapping them underneath and gluing them to the preplaced insole attached to the bottom of the last. Another midsole then fills in the center of the sole so that the rands and sole can be glued on. Because the insole is mounted inside the shoe, this method produces shoes with more integrity and durability.

Esta construcción se suele utilizar en hormas semi flexionadas o muy poco convexas, ya que, al llevar palmillas y entresuelas, suelen tener más rigidez en la planta y se pueden calzar más cómodas.
